Abstract
Propionibacterium acnes plays a critical role in the development of acne vulgaris. There has been a rise in the number of patients carrying P. acnes strains that are resistant to antibiotics. Thus, alternative anti-microbial agents are required. Zinc oxide (ZnO-NPs) and silver (Ag-NPs) nanoparticles can be used against several antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The impact of Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs against two clinical strains of P. acnes, P1 and P2, and a reference strain, NCTC747, were investigated in this research. A chemical approach for the green synthesis of Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs from Peganum harmala was employed. The microtiter plate method was used to examine the effects of NPs on bacterial growth, biofilm development, and biofilm eradication. A broth microdilution process was performed in order to determine minimal inhibitory (MIC) concentrations. Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs had a spherical shape and average dimensions of 10 and 50 nm, respectively. MIC values for all P. acnes strains for Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs were 125 µg/mL and 250 µg/mL, respectively. Ag-NP and ZnO-NP concentrations of 3.9- 62.5 µg/mL and 15-62.5 µg/mL significantly inhibited the growth and biofilm formation of all P. acnes strains, respectively. ZnO-NP concentrations of 15-62.5 μg/mL significantly inhibited the growth of NCTC747 and P2 strains. The growth of P1 was impacted by concentrations of 31.25 μg/mL and 62.5 μg/mL. Biofilm formation in the NCTC747 strain was diminished by a ZnO-NP concentration of 15 μg/mL. The clinical strains of P. acnes were only affected by ZnO-NP titres of more than 31.25 μg/mL. Established P. acne biofilm biomass was significantly reduced in all strains at a Ag-NP and ZnO-NP concentration of 62.5 µg/mL. The findings demonstrated that Ag-NPs and ZnO-NPs exert an anti-bacterial effect against P. acnes. Further research is required to determine their potential utility as a treatment option for acne.

Abstract
Despite widespread mass rollout programs, the rapid spread of the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant called into question the effectiveness of the existing vaccines against infection, hospitalization, severity, and mortality compared to previous variants. This systematic review summarizes and compares the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines, with respect to the above outcomes in adults, children, and adolescents. A comprehensive literature search was undertaken on several databases. Only 51 studies met our inclusion criteria, revealing that the protection from primary vaccination against Omicron infection is inferior to protection against Delta and Alpha infections and wanes faster over time. However, mRNA vaccine boosters were reported to reestablish effectiveness, although to a lower extent against Omicron. Nonetheless, primary vaccination was shown to preserve strong protection against Omicron-associated hospitalization, severity, and death, even months after last dose. However, boosters provide more robust and longer-lasting protection against hospitalizations due to Omicron as compared to only primary series.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) lung infection has represented a global challenge. Intriguingly, it has been shown that the alveolar lung epithelium expresses little Angiotensin Converting Enzyme receptor protein (ACE2), the entry receptor for SARS-CoV-2. Upper airway establishment of infection and translocation to the lung is well documented but other anatomical niches may be relevant to potentially serious lung infection. ACE2 is heavily expressed in the gastrointestinal tract and gastrointestinal symptoms support a clinical diagnosis of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This suggests a research question and the need to gather patient data exploring potential aerodigestive links in SARS-CoV-2 tranlocation and infection which may be relevant in the peripheral lung. This recognizes anatomical proximity and concepts of bi-directional movement between the Gastrointestinal and lung systems in normal physiology and disease. We have therefore explored the potential for gastro oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) micro aspiration and aeorodigestive pathophysiology in a novel prospective investigation of patients hospitalized with COVID-19. METHODS This is a prospective descriptive cohort study of 210 patients who were hospitalized with a confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. The cohort was divided into three groups of patients based on symptom severity and radiological results. The Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) was used to evaluate the presence and severity of GOR. An RSI greater than 13 is considered to be abnormal. Patients' saliva samples were tested using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to determine the level of salivary pepsin among the cohort of patients. RESULTS A total of 210 patients with COVID-19 were enrolled in the study with 55.2% (116/210) classified as mildly ill, 31.9% (67/210) moderately ill and 12.9% (27/210) as severely ill. 34% (72/210) of the patients had an RSI score of over 13 and a median salivary pepsin value of 54 ± 29 ng/ml which suggested an incidence of extraesophageal reflux (EOR) in around a third of patients. The presence of respiratory comorbid conditions, an RSI score of over 13 and a salivary pepsin level of > 76ng/ml increased the risk of developing a more severe COVID-19 infection. CONCLUSION The study showed a high prevalence of EOR among the study cohort and provide the first prospective evidence suggesting the potential for aerodigestive pathophysiology including microaspiration in COVID-19 disease. We believe that the results of our study support the need for more extensive research.

Abstract
Purpose During the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching has required online-learning modalities to facilitate easily accessible yet high-quality education. However, since the nature of anatomy requires hands-on experience in laboratories with cadavers, teaching anatomy in an online setting has proven especially difficult. This matter may be resolved with the Anatomage Table, an advanced anatomy visualization tool, which several studies have suggested can augment learning experiences for students in anatomy courses. Our objective was to provide accessible online modules, through utilization of the Anatomage Table, for medical students to facilitate their learning and enhance online learning experience. Materials and Methods Ten modules were designed, consisting of a presentation, a pre- and post-self-assessment, as well as anatomical images and radiographs taken from Anatomage Table. The modules were based on a single organ system, and a clinical case pertaining to that organ system was presented. Weill Cornell Medicine-Qatar (WCM-Q) second-year medical students contributed 102 responses in total throughout the 10 modules. Using a paired t-test, the study compared the students' pre- and post-assessment scores to determine how beneficial the modules were. Results A significant difference in scores on the pre- and post-assessments was found for all 10 modules using a paired t-test. At the end of the modules, the students completed a feedback survey to assess the quality and convenience. Most of the students agreed or strongly agreed that the modules were beneficial to their online anatomy learning and wanted to see similar anatomical modules in the future. Conclusion The Anatomage Table is an innovative virtual resource that can significantly contribute to a more engaging and productive experience for medical students.

Abstract
Aim This study examines the changes in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptom frequency among patients with GERD throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A structured questionnaire was distributed among 198 GERD patients. The questionnaire consisted of a demographic characteristic assessment, the GerdQ questionnaire, and a reflux symptom index (RSI) questionnaire. Result & conclusion A statistically significant increase in GerdQ score was identified among participants during the COVID-19 pandemic (t = 7.055, df = 209, p < 0.001), who had experienced an increase in the frequency of positive predictors of GERD and a decrease in the frequency of negative predictors of GERD. The COVID-19 pandemic and its related lockdown countermeasures may have led to exacerbating and worsening GERD symptoms.

Abstract
Aim This study examined the various manifestations of COVID-19 in people's gastro-intestinal system and how gastro-intestinal involvement relates to the progression and outcome of the disease. Methodology A questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 561 COVID-19 patients between February 6 and 6 April 2022. Laboratory data and clinical outcomes were obtained from the patients' medical records. Results 39.9% of patients presented gastro-intestinal symptoms, mainly loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Gastro-intestinal symptoms were not linked to poorer outcomes such as mortality, ICU admission or length of hospital stays. Conclusion gastro-intestinal symptoms were common among patients and may manifest with respiratory symptoms. We recommended clinicians to watch out for gastro-intestinal symptoms as related to COVID-19 infection.

Abstract
The high antibiotic resistance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) makes it critical to develop alternative antimicrobial agents that are effective and affordable. One of the many applications of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) is their use as an antimicrobial agent against bacteria resistant to common antibiotics. The key purpose of this research was to assess the antibacterial and antibiofilm effectiveness of biosynthesized Ag NPs against six biofilm-forming clinically isolated strains of PA and one reference strain (ATCC 27853). Ag NPs were biosynthesized using a seed extract of Peganum harmala as a reducing agent. Ag NPs were characterized by Ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The effect of Ag NPs on biofilm formation and eradication was examined through micro-titer plate assays, and the minimal inhibitory (MIC) and minimum bactericidal (MBC) concentrations determined. In addition, real-time polymerase chain reactions (RT-PCR) were performed to examine the effects of Ag NPs on the expression of seven PA biofilm-encoding genes (LasR, LasI, LssB, rhIR, rhII, pqsA and pqsR). The biosynthesized Ag NPs were spherically-shaped with a mean diameter of 11 nm. The MIC for each PA strain was 15.6 µg/ml, while the MBC was 31.25 µg/ml. All PA strains exposed to Ag NPs at sub-inhibitory concentrations (0.22-7.5 µg/ml) showed significant inhibitory effects on growth and biofilm formation. Biomass and biofilm metabolism were reduced dependent on Ag NP concentration. The expression of the quorum-sensing genes of all strains were significantly reduced at an Ag NP concentration of 7.5 µg/ml. The results demonstrate the extensive in-vitro antibacterial and antibiofilm performance of Ag NPs and their potential in the treatment of PA infection. It is recommended that future studies examine the possible synergy between Ag NPs and antibiotics.

Abstract
Objectives There are limited data from the Middle East on sex-related differences in short- and long-term stroke outcomes. We present 8 years of experience based on the Qatar stroke database. Setting The Qatar stroke database prospectively collects data on all stroke patients admitted to Hamad General Hospital. For this study, we compared female and male acute ischemic stroke patients on their characteristics at admission, short-term outcomes [modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score], and long-term outcomes [incidence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs)]. Participants A total of 7,300 patients [F: 1,406 (19.3%), M: 5,894 (80.7%); mean age 55.1 ± 13.3 (F: 61.6 ± 15.1, M: 53.5 ± 12.3; p < 0.001)] were admitted with acute ischemic stroke. Results Significantly fewer women presented within 4.5 h of onset (F: 29% vs. M: 32.8%; p = 0.01). Although women were more likely to experience severe stroke (NIHSS >10; F: 19.9% vs. M: 14.5%; p < 0.001), fewer were treated with thrombolysis (F: 9.8% vs. M: 12.1%; p = 0.02). Women experienced more medical complications (F: 11.7% vs. M: 7.4%; p < 0.001) and tended to have a more prolonged length of stay in the hospital (F: 6.4 ± 7.6 days vs. M: 5.5 ± 6.8 days; p < 0.001). Primary and secondary outcome measures Good outcomes at 90 days (mRS score of 0-2) were less frequent in women (F: 53.3% vs. M: 71.2%; p < 0.001). Fewer female patients were taking antiplatelets (F: 78% vs. M: 84.8%; p < 0.001) or statins (F: 81.2% vs. M: 85.7%; p < 0.001). Significantly more female patients experienced a MACE (F: 12.6% vs. M: 6.5%; p < 0.001). Conclusion Older age at presentation contributes to poor outcomes following acute stroke in women. Other contributing factors include delays in admission to the hospital, lower rates of thrombolysis, and lower rates of provision of preventative treatments.

Abstract
AbstractThere is a limitation in the range of effectual antibiotics due to the Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) infection due to its innate antimicrobial resistance. Researchers have therefore been concentrating their efforts to discover advanced and cost effective antibacterial agents among the ever-increasing PA bacterial resistance strains. It has been discovered that various nanoparticles can be employed as antimicrobial agents. Here, we evaluated the antibacterial properties of the Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs), which was biosynthesized, being examined on six hospital strains of PA alongside a reference strain (ATCC 27853). A chemical approach was applied to biosynthesize the ZnO NPs from Olea europaea was performed, and confirmed by using X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopes. The nanoparticles then applied their antibacterial properties to examine them against six clinically isolated PA strains alongside the reference strain. This process tested for the results of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The Growth, biofilm formation and eradication were analyzed. The influence of the differentiating degrees ZnO NPs in regard to Quorom sensing gene expression were further examined. The ZnO NPs exhibited a crystalline size and diameter (Dc) of 40–60 nm and both the MIC and MBC tests revealed positive outcomes of concentrations of 3 and 6 mg/ml for each PA strain, respectively. At sub inhibitory concentration, The ZnO NPs were found to significantly inhibit the growth and biofilm formation of all PA strains and decreases in the biomass and metabolic behavior of PA established biofilms; these decreases varied depending on the dosage. At ZnO NPs concentrations of 900 µg/ml, the expression of majority of quorum sensing genes of all strains were significantly reduced, at ZnO NPs concentrations of 300 µg/ml, few genes were significantly impacted. In conclusion, the treatment of PA and could be other antibiotic resistant bacteria can therefore be approached by using ZnO NPs as it has been uncovered that they withhold advanced antibacterial properties.

Abstract
Hypothesis:
There is considerable evidence that women have poor outcome following acute stroke when compared to men. We report our experience from a large prospective stroke database from Qatar.
Methods:
The Qatar stroke database is a prospective study, which began enrolling patients in 2014. We collected data on the demographics, clinical presentation, investigations, treatments, hospital complications and outcome (measured as 90-days modified Rankin Score [mRS]) on all patients admitted with acute stroke to the Hamad General Hospital where ~95% of stroke patients in Qatar are admitted. Multivariate analysis of risk factors, stroke type and severity, and in-hospital complications were compared to determine 90-days and one-year outcome in men and women.
Results:
There were 7300 stroke patients (women:1406 [19.3%], men:5894 [80.7%] admitted between 2014-2021. Multivariate analysis revealed significantly higher rates of obesity (OR 2.51), increasing age (age>65 years [OR 3.79]) and atrial fibrillation (OR 1.26) in women, p<0.001. In women, thrombolysis was less frequent and poor outcome (mRS 3-6) was more frequent (OR 1.62, p< 0.001) after adjustment for risk factors, stroke severity and in-hospital complications. The one-year mortality was significantly higher in women (11.7% versus men: 5.1%, p<0.001).
Conclusions:
In this large series of prospectively collected acute stroke patients from Qatar, our study reveals that women are more likely to have a poor outcome when compared to men. Although there was a higher incidence of obesity and previous CAD in women, we were unable to explain the reasons for the poor outcome at 90 days and one year.

Abstract
Background Diabetic striatopathy is a rare neurological manifestation of nonketotic hyperglycemia that presents with contralateral hemichorea-hemiballismus. Presentation with concurrent seizures is rarely reported. Clinical presentation We report a case of diabetic striatopathy presenting with focal and generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) with right hemichorea-hemiballismus induced by a ketotic hyperglycemic state. Head MRI showed high T1-weighted signal intensity in the left lentiform nucleus with no significant diffusion restriction or postcontrast enhancement. The patient’s condition gradually improved, with seizure control on AEDs. Hemichorea-hemiballismus significantly improved with adequate blood sugar control and resolved with low-dose haloperidol. Conclusions Diabetic striatopathy presenting with hemichorea-hemiballismus and concurrent GTCS has been reported previously in two cases; however, it has never been reported in ketotic hyperglycemia. To the best of our knowledge, we herein report the first case report of focal and generalized seizures in a ketotic hyperglycemic state and mesial temporal sclerosis.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) has caused a global pandemic that continues to cause numerous deaths to date. Four vaccines have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as of July 2021 to prevent the transmission of COVID‐19: Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, and Janssen. These vaccines have shown great efficacy and safety profile. One side effect that has been widely reported is post‐COVID‐19 vaccination lymphadenopathy. Due to the mimicry of the lymphadenopathy for metastases in some oncologic patients, there have been reports of patients who underwent biopsies that showed pathologic confirmation of benign reactive lymphadenopathy secondary to the COVID‐19 vaccine. Therefore, understanding the incidence of lymphadenopathy post‐COVID‐19 vaccinations will help guide radiologists and oncologists in their management of patients, both present oncologic patients, and patients with concerns over their newly presenting lymphadenopathy. A systematic literature search was performed using several databases to identify relevant studies that reported lymphadenopathy post‐COVID‐19 vaccination. Our results revealed that several cases have been detected in patients undergoing follow‐up fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)‐positron emission tomography‐computerized tomography scans where lymph nodes ipsilateral to the vaccine injection site show increased uptake of FDG. Thus, knowledge of the incidence of lymphadenopathy may help avoid unnecessary biopsies, interventions, and changes in management for patients, especially oncologic patients who are at risk for malignancies. Lymphadenopathy has been widely reported post‐COVID‐19 vaccination including patients undergoing follow‐up FDG‐PET‐CT scans which showed increased FDG uptake Care must be taken before suspecting lymph node metastasis or deciding for lymphadenectomy following COVID‐19 vaccination

Abstract
COVID‐19 is a global pandemic with a daily increasing number of affected individuals. Thrombosis is a severe complication of COVID‐19 that leads to a worse clinical course with higher rates of mortality. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that hyperinflammation plays a crucial role in disease progression. This review compiles clinical data of COVID‐19 patients who developed thrombotic complications to investigate the possible role of hyperinflammation in inducing hypercoagulation. A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Embase, Medline and Scopus to identify relevant clinical studies that investigated thrombotic manifestations and reported inflammatory and coagulation biomarkers in COVID‐19 patients. Only 54 studies met our inclusion criteria, the majority of which demonstrated significantly elevated inflammatory markers. In the cohort studies with control, D‐dimer was significantly higher in COVID‐19 patients with thrombosis as compared to the control. Pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis and strokes were frequently reported which could be attributed to the hyperinflammatory response associated with COVID‐19 and/or to the direct viral activation of platelets and endothelial cells, two mechanisms that are discussed in this review. It is recommended that all admitted COVID‐19 patients should be assessed for hypercoagulation. Furthermore, several studies have suggested that anticoagulation may be beneficial, especially in hospitalized non‐ICU patients. Although vaccines against SARS‐CoV‐2 have been approved and distributed in several countries, research should continue in the field of prevention and treatment of COVID‐19 and its severe complications including thrombosis due to the emergence of new variants against which the efficacy of the vaccines is not yet clear.

Abstract
Dental tissues represent an alternative and promising source of post-natal Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for tissue engineering. Furthermore, dental stem cells from apical papilla (SCAPs) cells can be obtained from the wisdom tooth which is unnecessary for human masticatory function and frequently extracted for orthodontic reasons or dysodontiasis. More precisely, apical papilla is the immature, mostly uncalcified, precursor of the tooth root, therefore is composed of more undifferentiated cells than dental pulp. In addition, tooth extraction, especially by piezosurgery technique, can be considered less invasive in comparison to bone marrow or other tissues biopsy. Our work is aimed to investigate the safety of and predictable procedure on surgical immature third molar extraction and to provide new insight on SCAP research for future biomedical applications. The isolated cells were examined for stem cell properties by analyzing their colony-forming efficiency, differentiation characteristics and the expression of MSC markers.

Abstract
Bisphosphonates are antiresorptive pharmacological agents used in the treatment of osteoporosis. Recently, osteonecrosis of the jaw has been recognized as a potential side effect in patients on long-term bisphosphonate therapy. This condition, popularly called bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ), has been rechristened as MRONJ (medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw) to accommodate the increasing number of cases of osteonecrosis of jaws associated with various other antiresorptive and antigiogenic pharmacological therapies. The aim of the present study was to assess the outcome of using platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) for the treatment of MRONJ in a single study group. Twenty-three consecutive patients (15 females and 8 males; aged 52-73 years) with MRONJ were enrolled in this study. These patients presented a history of bisphosphonate medication of varying duration, presence of exposed bone in the maxillofacial region for more than eight weeks, and no history of radiation therapy to the jaws. These patients were managed by surgical curettage and application of platelet rich fibrin (PRF). The outcomes were assessed using clinical and histopathological methods. On the basis of the present findings, we can conclude that PRF can act as an effective barrier membrane between the alveolar bone and the oral cavity and may offer a fast, easy and effective alternative method for the closure of bone exposure in MRONJ patients.

Abstract
Over two million Muslim pilgrims assemble annually in Mecca and Medina, Saudi Arabia, to complete the Hajj. The large number of people in a crowded environment increases the potential for pneumococcal carriage amplification. We evaluated pneumococcal carriage prevalence with four cross-sectional studies conducted at beginning-Hajj (Mecca) and end-Hajj (Mina) during 2011 and 2012. A questionnaire was administered and a nasopharyngeal swab was collected. The swab was tested for pneumococcus, serotype and antibiotic resistance. A total of 3203 subjects (1590 at beginning-Hajj and 1613 at end-Hajj) originating from 18 countries in Africa or Asia were enrolled. The overall pneumococcal carriage prevalence was 6.0%. There was an increase in carriage between beginning-Hajj and end-Hajj cohorts for: overall carriage (4.4% versus 7.5%, prevalence ratio (PR) 1.7, 95% CI 1.3-2.3), and carriage of 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine serotypes (2.3% versus 4.1%, PR 1.8, 95% CI 1.2-2.7), 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) serotypes (1.1% versus 3.6%, PR 3.2, 95% CI 1.9-5.6), 10-valent PCV serotypes (0.6% versus 1.6%, PR 2.6, 95% CI 1.2-5.3), antibiotic non-susceptible isolates (2.5% versus 6.1%, PR 2.5, 95% CI 1.7-3.6) and multiple non-susceptible isolates (0.6% versus 2.2%, PR 3.8, 95% CI 1.8-7.9). Fifty-two different serotypes were identified, most commonly serotypes 3 (17%), 19F (5%) and 34 (5%). These results suggest that the Hajj may increase pneumococcal carriage-particularly conjugate vaccine serotypes and antibiotic non-susceptible strains, although the exact mechanism remains unknown. The Hajj may therefore provide a mechanism for the global distribution of pneumococci.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is one of the main causes of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants and young children. The aims of the present study were to evaluate the role of RSV in children >2 years old hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) and to type the circulating RSV strains. MATERIALS AND METHODS Serum and throat swab samples were taken upon admission from Greek children aged > 2 years, hospitalized with atypical CAP, and when possible, a second serum sample was also taken. RSV IgG and IgM antibodies were determined by Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), while throat swab samples were tested by nested RT-PCR. Additional serological testing was performed to find out probable co-infections. RESULTS A total of 101 children with atypical CAP were included in the study, aged 2.5-14 years (median 8.25). RSV IgM antibodies were detected in 21 (20.7%) cases, either in the first or/and in the second serum sample, while RSV genome was detected in 11 out of 15 (73%) IgM-positive patients, which were further tested by PCR. PCR-positive results were obtained up to the 7(th) day of illness. Among the 11 cases, one was of type B, and all the rest were of type A. The median age of the RSV-positive children was 4 years (range 3-13 years). Although RSV was detected in all seasons, the majority of cases (31%) were detected in winter. Co-infection was detected in 3 cases (two with Mycoplasma pneumoniae and one with adenovirus). CONCLUSIONS Apart from the known role of RSV as the most important pathogen causing acute respiratory disease in infants and young children, it is also a significant viral pathogen in older children hospitalized because of CAP. Genetic typing provides further insight into the epidemiology of the disease.

Abstract
AIM/HYPOTHESIS We undertook a systematic review of the literature concerning the efficacy and safety of bisphosphonates in acute Charcot neuropathic osteoarthropathy. METHODS MEDLINE, PubMed, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and abstracts presented during the meetings of the American Diabetes Association and the European Association of Diabetes were searched for relevant publications from the period January 1990 to September 2011. RESULTS A total of ten studies on the treatment of acute Charcot osteoarthropathy with bisphosphonates were identified and included in the analysis. Only four clinical trials were published, three of which were randomised. Bisphosphonates appeared to induce significant reductions in skin temperature and bone turnover markers compared with placebo, without serious adverse events. Nevertheless, bisphosphonates did not shorten the immobilisation time. Moreover, no data were available regarding their long-term effects. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATIONS Bisphosphonates have been shown to be effective for reducing bone turnover markers and skin temperature in some studies. Nevertheless, the long-term efficacy, specifically that regarding the occurrence of deformities and ulcerations, remains to be demonstrated as no follow-up studies have been published. Moreover, some studies have suggested that bisphosphonates may lengthen the resolution phase of the disease. In our opinion, the data are too weak to support the use of bisphosphonates as a routine treatment for acute Charcot neuroarthropathy.

Abstract
Implant placement in an anterior atrophic mandible is not an uncommon procedure. Fracture secondary to such implant placement is a rare complication. The authors discuss a case referred to their surgical centre and discuss the management approaches found in the English literature.

Abstract
BACKGROUND M. pneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory tract infections (RTIs) of variable severity especially in children. New diagnostic techniques offered more reliable information about the epidemiology of infection by this pathogen. AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence and epidemiology of acute M. pneumoniae infections among Greek children hospitalized for RTIs using more advanced techniques. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 225 Greek children hospitalized for RTIs during a 15-month period. Throat swab specimens were tested by PCR for the detection of M. pneumoniae, while IgG and IgM antibodies were determined by ELISA and, in certain cases, also by western-blot. In parallel, specimens were tested for the presence of additional respiratory pathogens. RESULTS M. pneumoniae infection was diagnosed as the only pathogen in 25 (11.1%) cases, being the second (after respiratory syncytial virus- RSV) most often detected pathogen. The proportion of cases with M. pneumoniae infection in age group 8-14 years (23.3%) was significantly higher than that in <3 years age group. CONCLUSION During our study period, M. pneumoniae was the second causative agent of RTIs after RSV. The proportion of children with M. pneumoniae RTIs increased with age, while most cases were reported during summer and autumn.
