Transition metal selenides and diselenides: Hydrothermal fabrication, investigation of morphology, particle size and and their applications in photocatalyst

FeSe2 and Its Composites for Pollutants Removal: Synthesis, Mechanisms, and Application Potential

In recent years, the research of FeSe2 and its composites in environmental remediation has been gradually carried out. And the FeSe2 materials show great catalytic performance in photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and Fenton-like reactions for pollutants removal. Therefore, the studies and applications of FeSe2 materials are reviewed in this work, including the common synthesis methods, the role of Fe and Se species as well as the catalyst structure, and the potential for practical environmental applications. Hereinto, it is worth noting in particular that the lower-valent Se (Se2-), unsaturated Se (Se-), and Se vacancies (VSe) can play different roles in promoting pollutants removal. In addition, the FeSe2 material also demonstrates high stability, reusability, and adaptability over a wider pH range as well as universality to different pollutants. In view of the overall great properties and performance of FeSe2 materials compared with other typical Fe-based materials, it deserves and needs further research. And finally, this paper presents some challenges and perspectives in future development, looking forward to providing helpful guidance for the subsequent research of FeSe2 and its composites for environmental application.

Flexocatalysis Enhances Tumor Photodynamic Therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is long-standing suffered from elevated tumor interstitial fluid pressure (TIFP) and prevalent hypoxic microenvironment within the solid malignancies. Herein, sound-activated flexocatalysis is developed to overcome the dilemma of PDT through both enhancing tumor penetration of photosensitizers by reducing TIFP and establishing an oxygen-rich microenvironment. In detail, a Schottky junction is constructed by flexocatalyst MoSe2 nanoflowers and Pt. Subsequently, the Schottky junction is loaded with the photosensitizer indocyanine green (ICG) and encapsulated within tumor cytomembrane to constitute a bionic-flexocatalytic nanomedicine (MPI@M). After targeting the tumor, MPI@M orchestrates flexocatalytic water splitting in tumor interstitial fluid under acoustic stimulation to lower TIFP, which boosted the tumor penetration of ICG. Concurrently, the oxygen released from the flexocatalytic water splitting overcomes the limitation of hypoxia against PDT. Furthermore, superfluous singlet oxygen generated by PDT can induce mitochondrial dysfunction for further tumor cell apoptosis. After 60 min of flexocatalysis, both the 30% decrease of TIFP and the relieved tumor hypoxia are observed, significantly promoting the therapeutic effect of PDT. Consequently, MoSe2/Pt junction nanoflowers, with the excellent flexocatalytic performance, hold significant potential for future applications in biocatalytic cancer therapies.

Synthesis and Electrocatalytic Applications of Layer-Structured Metal Chalcogenides Composites

Featured with the attractive properties such as large surface area, unique atomic layer thickness, excellent electronic conductivity, and superior catalytic activity, layered metal chalcogenides (LMCs) have received considerable research attention in electrocatalytic applications. In this review, the approaches developed to synthesize LMCs-based electrocatalysts are summarized. Recent progress in LMCs-based composites for electrochemical energy conversion applications including oxygen reduction reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, overall water splitting, and nitrogen reduction reaction is reviewed, and the potential opportunities and practical obstacles for the development of LMCs-based composites as high-performing active substances for electrocatalytic applications are also discussed. This review may provide an inspiring guidance for developing high-performance LMCs for electrochemical energy conversion applications.

A Mini Review on Borate Photocatalysts for Water Decomposition: Synthesis, Structure, and Further Challenges

The development of novel photocatalysts, both visible and UV-responsive, for water decomposition reactions is of great importance. Here we focused on the application of the borates as photocatalysts in water decomposition reactions, including water splitting reaction, hydrogen evolution half-reaction, and oxygen evolution half-reaction. In addition, the rates of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution and oxygen evolution by these borate photocatalysts in different water decomposition reactions were summarized. Further, the review summarized the synthetic chemistry and structural features of existing borate photocatalysts for water decomposition reactions. Synthetic chemistry mainly includes high-temperature solid-state method, sol-gel method, precipitation method, hydrothermal method, boric acid flux method, and high-pressure method. Next, we summarized the crystal structures of the borate photocatalysts, with a particular focus on the form of the B-O unit and metal-oxygen polyhedral in the borates, and used this to classify borate photocatalysts, which are rarely mentioned in the current photocatalysis literature. Finally, we analyzed the relationship between the structural features of the borate photocatalysts and photocatalytic performance to discuss the further challenges faced by the borate photocatalysts for water decomposition reactions.

Recent Developments in Electrodeposition of Transition Metal Chalcogenides-Based Electrode Materials for Advance Supercapacitor Applications: A Review

High-performance supercapacitive electrode materials have received significant attention from researchers worldwide, thus aiming for comparable performance similar to the extensively used rechargeable batteries. For emerging energy storage technologies like flexible supercapacitors, transition metal chalcogenides (TMCs) have been in the spotlight due to their promising electrochemical features compared to other electrode materials. Among the synthesis techniques, electrodeposition-mediated preparation of thin films of TMCs offered an affordable binder-free approach for electrode fabrication that effectively improved the supercapacitor performance. Hence, this review mainly focussed on the electrodeposition-based syntheses of single/ multinary chalcogenides and their composites for supercapacitors applications. Further, the effects of different deposition parameters were discussed for boosting the supercapacitor performance. Finally, this review outlined the existing challenges and future perspectives in this research domain, which will assist the upcoming exploration in the energy storage field.

Metal Selenides Find Plenty of Space in Architecting Advanced Sodium/Potassium Ion Batteries

The rapid evolution of smart grid system urges researchers on exploiting systems with properties of high-energy, low-cost, and eco-friendly beyond lithium-ion batteries. Under the circumstances, sodium- and potassium-ion batteries with the semblable work mechanism to commercial lithium-ion batteries, hold the merits of cost-effective and earth-abundant. As a result, it is deemed a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage devices. Exploiting appropriate active electrode materials is in the center of the spotlight for the development of batteries. Metal selenides with special structures and relatively high theoretical capacity have aroused broad interest and achieved great achievements. To push the smooth development of metal selenides and enhancement of the electrochemical performance of sodium- and potassium-ion batteries, it is vital to grasp the inherent properties and electrochemical mechanisms of these materials. Herein, the state-of-the-art development and challenges of metal selenides are summarized and discussed. Meanwhile, the corresponding electrochemical mechanism and future development directions are also highlighted.

Facile Preparation of the ZnSe/Ag2Se Binary Heterojunction for Photocatalytic Antibacterial Efficiency

In a novel approach that capitalized on the differential solubility product (Ksp) of ZnSe and Ag2Se, a unique ZnSe/Ag2Se binary heterostructure was efficiently synthesized in situ. ZnSe/Ag2Se exhibited excellent antimicrobial efficiency under visible light. Incorporating Ag2Se into ZnSe significantly enhanced the photoelectric performance of the catalyst, greatly accelerating the separation of the photogenerated electrons in the system. Active species removal experiments determined that ·O2- and H2O2 played crucial roles in photocatalytic antibacterial efficiency. Further investigation into the levels of cellular membrane peroxidation, bacterial morphology, and intracellular contents concentration revealed that during the photocatalytic antimicrobial process, reactive oxygen species initially oxidize phospholipids in the cell membrane, leading to damage to the external structure of the cell and leakage of the intracellular contents, ultimately resulting in bacteria inactivation. The photocatalytic antimicrobial process of ZnSe/Ag2Se fundamentally deviates from conventional methods, offering new insights into efficient disinfection and photocatalytic antimicrobial mechanisms.

A review of physical, chemical and biological synthesis methods of bimetallic nanoparticles and applications in sensing, water treatment, biomedicine, catalysis and hydrogen storage

The article also evaluates the pros and cons of various fabrication methods, highlighting the potential of plant extract synthesis for mass production of capped BNPs. However, it warns that this method may not be suitable for certain applications requiring ligand-free surfaces. In contrast, physical methods like laser ablation offer better control and reactivity, especially for applications where ligand-free surfaces are critical. The report underscores the environmental benefits of plant extract synthesis compared to chemical methods that use hazardous chemicals and pose risks to extraction, production, and disposal. The article emphasizes the need for life cycle assessment (LCA) articles in the literature, given the growing volume of research on nanotechnology materials. This article caters to researchers at all stages and applies to various fields applying nanomaterials.

The interface design and properties enhancement of ZnO/cellulose composites: Branching fiber network to guide the assembly of ZnO flower

Using renewable biomass resources to regulate the growth and properties of catalysts is sustainable nanotechnology for achieving efficient photocatalysis and recycling. This work suggested a way to produce paper-based photocatalysts and resize the embedded zinc oxide (ZnO) flowers. The combination of experimental analysis and theoretical simulations demonstrated that small pores of the branching fiber network enhanced the interfacial interaction between ZnO flowers and cellulose fibers, thereby improving mechanical properties and optimizing flower structure. The interaction energy and electron density difference (EDD) simulation results demonstrated that the ZnO/cellulose interface structure shares significant attraction and charge transfer. Cellulose fibers ground for 20 cycles (CFG20) possessed dense branching fiber network and loaded with the smallest ZnO flowers, achieving a balance of strong mechanical properties and reaction efficiency. Remarkably, ZnO/CFG20 paper-based catalyst indicated strong photodegradation efficiency (100% for methyl orange, 100% for phenol, and 85.23% for aniline) and excellent reusability. This work will pave the way for the green regulation of catalysts.

Recent Developments and Perspectives of Cobalt Sulfide-Based Composite Materials in Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis, as an inexpensive and safe technology to convert solar energy, is essential for the efficient utilization of sustainable renewable energy sources. Earth-abundant cobalt sulfide-based composites have generated great interest in the field of solar fuel conversion because of their cheap, diverse structures and facile preparation. Over the past 10 years, the number of reports on cobalt sulfide-based photocatalysts has increased year by year, and more than 500 publications on the application of cobalt sulfide groups in photocatalysis can be found in the last three years. In this review, we initially summarize the four common strategies for preparing cobalt sulfide-based composite materials. Then, the multiple roles of cobalt sulfide-based cocatalysts in photocatalysis have been discussed. After that, we present the latest progress of cobalt sulfide in four fields of photocatalysis application, including photocatalytic hydrogen production, carbon dioxide reduction, nitrogen fixation, and photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Finally, the development prospects and challenges of cobalt sulfide-based photocatalysts are discussed. This review is expected to provide useful reference for the construction of high-performance cobalt sulfide-based composite photocatalytic materials for sustainable solar-chemical energy conversion.

Metal selenide nanomaterials for biomedical applications

Metal selenide nanomaterials have received enormous attention as they possess diverse compositions, microstructures, and properties. The combination of selenium with various metallic elements gives the metal selenide nanomaterials distinctive optoelectronic and magnetic properties, such as strong near-infrared absorption, excellent imaging properties, good stability, and long in vivo circulation. This makes metal selenide nanomaterials advantageous and promising for biomedical applications. This paper summarizes the research progress in the last five years in the controlled synthesis of metal selenide nanomaterials in different dimensions and with different compositions and structures. Then we discuss how surface modification and functionalization strategies are well-suited for biomedical fields, including tumor therapy, biosensing, and antibacterial biological applications. The future trends and issues of metal selenide nanomaterials in the biomedical field are also discussed.

Synthesis of MnSe-Based GO Composites as Effective Photocatalyst for Environmental Remediations

In this work, a manganese selenide/graphene oxide (MnSe/GO)-based composite was prepared for wet-chemical assisted method against organic dye; herein, methylene blue (MB) dye removal from the water was employed as a metal selenide-based photocatalyst. The synthesized MnSe/GO composite was systematically characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform electron microscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis. DRS). The structural characteristic revealed the adequate synthesis of the sample with good crystallinity and purity of the obtained products. The morphological analysis indicates the formation of MnSe nanoflakes composed of tiny particles on their surface. At the same time, the GO nanosheets with high aggregation were formed, which may be due to the van der Waals forces. The bond interaction and compositional analysis studies confirmed and supported the structural findings with high purity. The optical analysis showed the bandgap energies of MnSe and their composites MnSe (1.7 eV), 7% GO-MnSe (2.42 eV), 14% GO-MnSe (2.6 eV), 21% GO-MnSe (3.02 eV), and 28% GO-MnSe (3.24 eV) respectively, which increase the bandgap energy after GO and MnSe recombination. Among different contents, the optimized 21% GO-MnSe composite displayed enhanced photocatalytic properties. For instance, a short time of 90 min was taken compared with other concentrations due to the narrow bandgap of MnSe and the highly conductive charge carrier's support, making the process to remove MB from water faster. These results show that the selenide-based photocatalyst can be an attractive candidate for future advanced photocatalysis applications.

Designing, characterization, and evaluation of chitosan-zinc selenide nanoparticles for visible-light-induced degradation of tartrazine and sunset yellow dyes

Employing dyes in different industrial sectors has produced a serious threat to the environment and living organisms of water bodies and land. For the decontamination of such toxic dyes, efforts have been made to develop an efficient, feasible, and low maintenance processes. In this context, chitosan-zinc selenide (CS-ZnSe) nanoparticles were prepared through chemical reduction method as the efficient photocatalysts for the decontamination of toxic dyes through photocatalysis. Photocatalyst's synthesis was confirmed with the help of FTIR spectroscopy. XRD indicated the hexagonal crystal structure of the CS-ZnSe with a crystallite size of 12 nm. SEM micrographs showed the average nano photocatalyst size as 25 nm. EDX analysis was employed to determine the elemental composition of the CS-ZnSe. An excellent photocatalytic degradation efficiency for tartrazine and sunset yellow dyes was obtained using CS-ZnSe. The results showed a 98% and 97% degradation efficiency for tartrazine dye and sunset yellow (SY) dye at optimized conditions of time (3 h), pH (5), dye concentration (30 ppm), catalyst dosage (0.09 g and 0.01 g) , and at a temperature of 35 °C. Findings of the photocatalytic degradation process fitted well with first-order kinetics for both the dyes. Rate constant, 'K' value was found to be 0.001362 min^-1 and 0.001257 min^-1 for tartrazine and SY dyes, respectively. While value for (correlation coefficient, R²) was 0.99307 and 0.99277 for tartrazine and sunset yellow dyes, respectively. Recyclability of the photocatalyst was confirmed using it for consecutive cycles to degrade organic dyes. Results showed that the CH-ZnS possesses excellent efficiency in decontaminating organic dyes from industrial wastewater.

Electrochemical performance of CoSe2 with mixed phases decorated with N-doped rGO in potassium-ion batteries

Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) have received much attention as next-generation energy storage systems because of their abundance, low cost, and slightly lower standard redox potential than lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Nevertheless, they still face great challenges in the design of the best electrode materials for applications. Herein, we have successfully synthesized nano-sized CoSe₂ encapsulated by N-doped reduced graphene oxide (denoted as CoSe₂@N-rGO) by a direct one-step hydrothermal method, including both orthorhombic and cubic CoSe₂ phases. The CoSe₂@N-rGO anodes exhibit a high reversible capacity of 599.3 mA h g⁻¹ at 0.05 A g⁻¹ in the initial cycle, and in particular, they also exhibit a cycling stability of 421 mA h g⁻¹ after 100 cycles at 0.2 A g⁻¹. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that CoSe₂ with N-doped carbon can greatly accelerate electron transfer and enhance the rate performance. In addition, the intrinsic causes of the higher electrochemical performance of orthorhombic CoSe₂ than that of cubic CoSe₂ are also discussed.

Fast one-pot synthesis of a Se-rich MnCdSe solid solution for highly efficient cocatalyst-free photocatalytic H2 evolution

Designing high-efficiency and stable metal selenides for visible-light-induced photocatalytic H₂ production has been challenging. Here, a novel class of Se-rich MnCdSe solid solution with a tunable band structure is fabricated through a fast one-pot strategy. In the absence of any cocatalysts, the optimal MnCdSe nanocrystals exhibit a much higher visible-light-driven H₂ evolution activity (2582 μmol g^-1 h^-1) than the pristine CdSe (30 μmol g^-1 h^-1), and achieve an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 7.5% at 420 nm. This work opens a new gateway to explore metal selenide-based solid solutions for photocatalytic applications.

Au@MnSe2 Core-Shell Nanoagent Enabling Immediate Generation of Hydroxyl Radicals and Simultaneous Glutathione Deletion Free of Pre-Reaction for Chemodynamic-Photothermo-Photocatalytic Therapy with Significant Immune Response

As a typical tumor microenvironment-responsive therapy, chemodynamic therapy (CDT), producing hydroxyl radicals (^• OH) to eliminate tumor cells, has demonstrated great promise. Nevertheless, there are still major challenges: ^• OH generated from endogenous H₂ O₂ is usually insufficient; the CDT effect is strongly dependent on the pre-reaction with glutathione. Addressing the challenges, Au@MnSe₂ core-shell nanoagent for synergetic chemodynamic-photothermo-photocatalytic therapy combined with tetramodal imaging, including magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, photoacoustic, and infrared thermal imaging is reported. Distinct from the reported glutathione-depleting agents, Mn²⁺ in MnSe₂ allows immediate generation of ^• OH, independent of pre-reaction. Meanwhile, Mn³⁺ consumes glutathione by its conversion to Mn²⁺ . The Au-MnSe₂ combination promotes photothermal conversion and photocatalytic reaction, resulting in largely enhanced ^• OH generation from endogenous H₂ O₂ and significant hyperthermia. Meanwhile, immune response is effectively activated: the intratumoral expression of programmed cell death-1 and proinflammatory cytokines increase to 4-7 folds; the cytotoxic and helper T lymphocytes cells in the tumor area increase to more than 2.5-folds; an evident, temporary systemic immunostimulatory effect is demonstrated. High tumor inhibition rate (≈97.3%) and greatly prolonged survival are obtained. This highly-integrated design coordinating three different therapies with four different imaging modals provide new possibilities for high-performance theranostic nanoagents.

Precursor Engineering for the Synthesis of Mixed Anionic Metal (Cu, Mn) Chalcogenide Nanomaterials via Solvent-Less Synthesis

Metal-organic ligands with mixed chalcogenides are potential compounds for the preparation of mixed anionic metal chalcogenide alloys. However, only a few of such ligands are known, and their complexes are not well explored. We have prepared homo- and hetero-dichalcogenoimidodiphosphinate [(EE'PⁱPr₂NH)] (E, E' = Se, Se; S, S; S, Se) complexes of manganese and copper through metathetical reactions. The X-ray single crystal structure of [Mn{(SePⁱPr₂)₂N}₂] 1 revealed a triclinic crystal system, with a MnSe₄ core unit, whereas the crystal structure determination of [Mn{(SPⁱPr₂)(SePⁱPr₂)N}₂] 2 indicated a triclinic crystal system with a Mn(S/Se)₂ unit. Both metal centers are tetrahedral, with two deprotonated bidentate ligands forming the coordination sphere. The free ligand was found to exhibit a gauche configuration in the solid state. The energies of the various rotamers of dithio-analogue were studied by DFT calculations. The decomposition behavior of complexes with homo- and heterochalcogenides was investigated, and the complexes were employed as single-source precursors to generate manganese and copper chalcogenides through solvent-less melt reactions between 500 and 550 °C. The deposited powders were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (p-XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive analysis of X-ray (EDAX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and elemental mapping. MnS, MnSe₂, and MnSSe phases were obtained from the decomposition of respective manganese complexes. In contrast, the decomposition of copper-based complexes yielded Cu_2-xSe and the sulfur-doped Cu₃Se₂ phase from seleno- and mixed thio/seleno-complexes of Cu, respectively. The morphology ranged from random sheet-like structures to agglomerated platelets, while the selected area electron diffraction (SAED) revealed the crystalline nature of the materials. Depending on the nature of the complex and the temperature, different amounts of phosphorus were present as an impurity in the synthesized products.

Composition-dependent activity of ZnxCd1-xSe solid solution coupled with Ni2P nanosheets for visible-light-driven photocatalytic H2 generation

Metal selenide semiconductors have been rarely used for photocatalytic water splitting because of their poor stability and severe photocorrosion properties. Hence, designing stable metal selenides with suitable bandgap energies has considerable practical significance in photocatalytic H₂ evolution. In this work, a novel series of Zn_xCd_1-xSe (x = 0 ∼ 1) with tunable band structure were fabricated through a simple solvothermal method. Impressively, the ZnSe exhibited a maximum H₂ production rate of 1056 µmol g^-1h^-1, which was higher than that of CdSe and Zn_xCd_1-xSe solid solutions. Such visible-light photoactivity for water reduction to H₂ was attained even after 6 cycling photocatalytic experiments. Moreover, the two-dimensional (2D) Ni₂P nanosheets act as a high-efficiency cocatalyst integrated with Zn_xCd_1-xSe semiconductor to boost photocatalytic H₂ generation performance. The optimal 8% Ni₂P/ZnSe composites displayed excellent cycling stability and superior photocatalytic H₂ evolution performance (4336 µmol g^-1h^-1), which was about 4.1 times that of pure ZnSe under visible light irradiation. Photoelectrochemical (PEC), photoluminescence (PL), and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements reveal that the improved photoactivity Ni₂P/ZnSe photocatalysts were ascribed to the effective separation and migration of photoinduced carriers. The present work paves a pathway to explore the fabrication of Zn_xCd_1-xSe solid solutions and the hybridization of 2D transition metal phosphides nanosheets toward photocatalytic applications.

Construction of a multidimensional CdS@MoS2 heterojunction for enhancing the activity and transfer efficiency of photogenerated carriers

A CdS@MoS2 composite photocatalyst exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity to replace noble metals by constructing a n–n heterojunction.

Sulfide-Based Photocatalysts Using Visible Light, with Special Focus on In2S3, SnS2 and ZnIn2S4

Sulfides are frequently used as photocatalysts, since they absorb visible light better than many oxides. They have the disadvantage of being more easily photocorroded. This occurs mostly in oxidizing conditions; therefore, they are commonly used instead in reduction processes, such as CO2 reduction to fuels or H2 production. Here a summary will be presented of a number of sulfides used in several photocatalytic processes; where appropriate, some recent reviews will be presented of their behaviour. Results obtained in recent years by our group using some octahedral sulfides will be shown, showing how to determine their wavelength-dependent photocatalytic activities, checking their mechanisms in some cases, and verifying how they can be modified to extend their wavelength range of activity. It will be shown here as well how using photocatalytic or photoelectrochemical setups, by combining some enzymes with these sulfides, allows achieving the photo-splitting of water into H2 and O2, thus constituting a scheme of artificial photosynthesis.

Facile and Green Fabrication of Microwave-Assisted Reduced Graphene Oxide/Titanium Dioxide Nanocomposites as Photocatalysts for Rhodamine 6G Degradation

Organic pollutants, such as synthetic dyes, are treated to prevent them from contaminating natural water sources. One of the treatment methods is advanced oxidation process using a photocatalyst material as the active agent. However, many photocatalysts are hindered by their production cost and efficiency. In this study, nanocomposites consisting of reduced graphene oxide and titanium dioxide (rGO/TiO2) were prepared by a simple and green approach using the microwave-assisted method, and we utilized a graphene oxide (GO) precursor that was fabricated through the Tour method. The ratios of rGO/TiO2 in nanocomposites were varied (2:1, 1:1, and 1:2) to know the influence of rGO on the photocatalytic performance of the nanocomposites for rhodamine 6G degradation. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation revealed that a transparent particle with a sheetlike morphology was detected in the rGO sample, suggesting that a very thin film of a few layers of GO or rGO was successfully formed. Based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation, the rGO/TiO2 nanocomposites had a wrinkled and layered rGO structure decorated by TiO2 nanoparticles with average diameters of 125.9 ± 40.6 nm, implying that rGO layers are able to prevent TiO2 from agglomeration. The synthesized product contained only rGO and TiO2 in the anatase form without impurities that were proven by Raman spectra and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The nanocomposite with rGO/TiO2 ratio 1:2 (composite C) was found to be the best composition in this study, and it was able to degrade 82.9 ± 2.4% of the rhodamine 6G after UV irradiation for 4 h. Based on a time-resolved photoluminescence study at wavelength emission 500 nm, the average decay lifetime of R6G-rGO/TiO2 composites (2.91 ns) was found to be longer than that of the R6G-TiO2 sample (2.05 ns), implying that the presence of rGO in rGO/TiO2 composites successfully suppressed the electron-hole recombination process in TiO2 and significantly improved their photocatalytic performance. This study showed that the rGO/TiO2 nanocomposites synthesized through relatively simple and eco-friendly processes display promising prospects for photocatalytic degradation of dyes and other recalcitrant pollutants in a water stream.

Ultrathin NiSe Nanosheets on Ni Foam for Efficient and Durable Hydrazine-Assisted Electrolytic Hydrogen Production

Hydrazine-assisted electrochemical water splitting is an important avenue toward low cost and sustainable hydrogen production. An efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the anodic hydrazine oxidation reaction (HzOR) is fundamental to this goal. Herein, we employed a facile method to fabricate ultrathin NiSe nanosheet arrays on nickel foam (NiSe/NF), which exhibits predominant electrocatalytic activity for both HER and HzOR. Our investigations revealed that the excellent electrocatalytic activity of the NiSe/NF mainly arises from the abundant electrocatalytic active sites endowed by the ultrathin nanosheet morphology, the rugged feature of the extended (100) nanosheet surface, the rich presence of Se on the nanosheet surface, and the three-dimensional (3D) porous structure of the NF and other factors such as high conductivity of the NiSe/NF and strong NiSe-NF adhesion. We assembled a hydrazine-boosted electrochemical water splitting cell using NiSe/NF as a bifunctional catalyst for both of the electrodes, and the constructed cell exhibits an ultralow overpotential (310 mV at 10 mA cm^-2), which is robust for 30 h continuous electrolysis in a 1 M KOH electrolyte. This work provides a promising avenue toward low cost, high-efficiency, and stable hydrogen production based on hydrazine-assisted electrolytic water splitting for future.

Photocatalytic Activity of S-Scheme Heterostructure for Hydrogen Production and Organic Pollutant Removal: A Mini-Review

Finding new technologies and materials that provide real alternatives to the environmental and energy-related issues represents a key point on the future sustainability of the industrial activities and society development. The water contamination represents an important problem considering that the quantity and complexity of organic pollutant (such as dyes, pesticides, pharmaceutical active compounds, etc.) molecules can not be efficiently addressed by the traditional wastewater treatments. The use of fossil fuels presents two major disadvantages: (1) environmental pollution and (2) limited stock, which inevitably causes the energy shortage in various countries. A possible answer to the above issues is represented by the photocatalytic technology based on S-scheme heterostructures characterized by the use of light energy in order to degrade organic pollutants or to split the water molecule into its components. The present mini-review aims to outline the most recent achievements in the production and optimization of S-scheme heterostructures for photocatalytic applications. The paper focuses on the influence of heterostructure components and photocatalytic parameters (photocatalyst dosage, light spectra and intensity, irradiation time) on the pollutant removal efficiency and hydrogen evolution rate. Additionally, based on the systematic evaluation of the reported results, several perspectives regarding the future of S-scheme heterostructures were included.
