Abstract
BACKGROUND Cirrhotic patients face heightened energy demands, leading to rapid glycogen depletion, protein degradation, oxidative stress, and inflammation, which drive disease progression and complications. These disruptions cause cellular damage and parenchymal changes, resulting in vascular alterations, portal hypertension, and liver dysfunction, significantly affecting patient prognosis. AIM To analyze the association between Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) scores and different nutritional indicators with survival in a 15-year follow-up cohort. METHODS This was a retrospective cohort study with 129 cirrhotic patients of both sexes aged > 18 years. Diagnosis of cirrhosis was made by liver biopsy. The first year of data collection was 2007, and data regarding outcomes were collected in 2023. Data were gathered from medical records, and grouped by different methods, including CTP, handgrip strength, and triceps skinfold cutoffs. The prognostic values for mortality were assessed using Kaplan-Meier curves and multivariate binary logistic regression models. RESULTS The coefficient for CTP was the only statistically significant variable (Wald = 5.193, P = 0.023). This suggests that with a negative change in CTP classification score, the odds of survival decrease 52.6%. The other evaluated variables did not significantly predict survival outcomes in the model. Kaplan-Meier survival curves also indicated that CTP classification was the only significant predictor. CONCLUSION Although different classifications showed specific differences in stratification, only CTP showed significant predictive potential. CTP score remains a simple and effective predictive tool for cirrhotic patients even after longer follow-up.

Abstract
Malnutrition is common in liver cirrhosis and is associated with increased rates of complications, hospitalization, and mortality. There are no consensus guidelines for malnutrition assessment in liver cirrhosis and a large number of clinicians do not routinely assess for malnutrition in patients with liver cirrhosis. This review explores the tools available for assessment of malnutrition in patients with liver cirrhosis, including nutritional screening protocols, anthropometric tools, biochemical tools, techniques analyzing body composition and functional assessments. We evaluate these tools and offer recommendations regarding their suitability for outpatient settings. In this review, we recommend the Royal Free Hospital-Nutritional Prioritising Tool for identifying patients at risk of malnutrition. Additionally, we recommend the use of the anthropometric tools Triceps Skinfold Thickness for females and Mid-Arm Muscle Circumference for males, due to differing patterns of muscle and fat malnutrition. Complementing this Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis can be utilized to assess body composition for the diagnosis of malnutrition. Biochemical markers have thus far failed to show a correlation with malnutrition. While hand grip strength is useful for detecting sarcopenia, a common complication of malnutrition, further evidence is required to validate its correlation with malnutrition.

Abstract
Dietary intake has been associated with pain and physical function, but it is unclear if these relationships are mediated by adiposity. Data were derived from the Whyalla Intergenerational Study of Health (n = 654, 57% women). Structural equation modelling tested the hypotheses that adiposity (body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), or body fat (BF, dual energy x-ray absorptiometry)) would mediate the relationship between diet quality (Dietary Guideline Index (DGI) total, core, or non-core scores) and pain (Short Form-36 bodily pain scale (SF36-BPS)), or physical function (grip-strength), overall, and by gender. Adiposity did not mediate a relationship between DGI scores and pain. Direct effects were observed between DGI total scores and SF36-BPS accounting for BMI (β = 0.170, 95% CI 0.002, 0.339), and between DGI core food scores and SF36-BPS (BMI, β = 0.278, 95% CI 0.070, 0.486; WC, β = 0.266, 95% CI 0.058, 0.474; BF, β = 0.266, 95% CI 0.060, 0.473). In women, direct effects existed between DGI scores and SF36-BPS (DGI total scores, BMI, β = 0.388, 95% CI 0.162, 0.613; WC, β = 0.372, 95% CI 0.146, 0.598; BF, β = 0.382, 95% CI 0.158, 0.605, and DGI core scores, BMI, β = 0.482, 95% CI 0.208, 0.757; WC, β = 0.472, 95% CI 0.197, 0.747; BF, β = 0.467, 95% CI 0.195, 0.739), and DGI total scores and grip-strength (BMI, β = 0.075, 95% CI 0.008, 0.142; WC, β = 0.076, 95% CI 0.009, 0.143; BF, β = 0.079, 95% CI 0.011, 0.146). Better diet quality is associated with lower bodily pain, irrespective of adiposity. Findings highlight the potential role of diet quality in pain management and function, particularly in women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a need to identify the complex interplay between various physiological mechanisms in primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) and cystic fibrosis (CF). The study investigated the interaction between respiratory function, exercise capacity, muscle strength, and inflammatory and oxidant/antioxidant responses in patients with PCD and CF. METHODS The study included 30 PCD patients, 30 CF patients, and 29 age and sex-matched healthy subjects. Exercise capacity was assessed using the modified shuttle walk test (MSWT). Handgrip strength (HGS) was used to evaluate general muscle strength. Oxidative stress-inflammatory parameters were also assessed. Pulmonary function test was performed by spirometry. Regarding the forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) z-score, patients with PCD and CF were subdivided into normal, mild, and severe/moderate groups. RESULTS Forced vital capacity (FVC) z-scores were lower in PCD and CF patients than controls. FEV1, FEV1/FVC, peak expiratory flow (PEF), and forced mid expiratory flow (FEF25-75%) z-scores were lower in PCD than in the other groups. HGS was lower in both mild PCD and normal CF patients relative to the controls. MSWT distance was lower in severe/moderate PCD patients than controls. Catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels did not differ significantly among the study groups, but superoxide dismutase (SOD) level in severe/moderate PCD, and glutathione (GSH) level in normal CF were higher than in controls. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) level was higher in patients with normal PCD and CF compared to the controls. IL-1β level was higher in PCD compared to controls. Additionally, correlations among these parameters were also determined in some patient groups. CONCLUSION Homeostasis related to respiratory function, aerobic performance, muscle strength, inflammatory response, and oxidant/antioxidant balance were affected in PCD and CF. Evaluating these mechanisms together may contribute to elucidating the pathophysiology of these rare diseases.

Abstract
Cirrhosis is considered a growing cause of morbidity and mortality, which represents a significant public health problem. Currently, there is no effective treatment to reverse cirrhosis. Treatment primarily centers on addressing the underlying liver condition, monitoring, and managing portal hypertension-related complications, and evaluating the potential for liver transplantation in cases of decompensated cirrhosis, marked by rapid progression and the emergence of complications like variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites, malnutrition, and more. Malnutrition, a prevalent complication across all disease stages, is often underdiagnosed in cirrhosis due to the complexities of nutritional assessment in patients with fluid retention and/or obesity, despite its crucial impact on prognosis. Increasing emphasis has been placed on the collaboration of nutritionists within hepatology and Liver transplant teams to deliver comprehensive care, a practice that has shown to improve outcomes. This review covers appropriate screening and assessment methods for evaluating the nutritional status of this population, diagnostic approaches for malnutrition, and context-specific nutrition treatments. It also discusses evidence-based recommendations for supplementation and physical exercise, both essential elements of the standard care provided to cirrhotic patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Nutrition-related factors linked to pain chronicity and disability include weight status and dietary behaviours. Dietary patterns associated with concurrent pain episodes, however, remain poorly characterised. This paper outlines the protocol for a feasibility study that aims to characterise pain-related dietary and lifestyle behaviours in people experiencing chronic musculoskeletal pain. METHODS The study will recruit participants who experience musculoskeletal pain on 5 or more days of the week for at least 3 months. Participants will attend two in-person clinic visits where physical measurements and a series of pain and lifestyle questionnaires will be completed. Visits will be conducted pre and post a 2-week self-monitoring period where participants will self-report concurrent diet, sleep, mood, and pain on four days and will wear a wrist-worn activity monitor (GENEActiv). Key feasibility metrics will evaluate participant recruitment, enrolment and retention rates, and compliance with the study data collection protocol. DISCUSSION There remains a lack of evidence behind dietary advice as an adjunct pain management tool. Upon completion of the protocol, feasibility outcomes will identify challenges to guide the design and delivery of a dietary intervention for chronic musculoskeletal pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most incident types of cancer among women in the world. Although chemotherapy is an effective way to treat several types of cancer, it may also cause serious complications, including cardiotoxicity. This study aimed to identify the impact of chemotherapy on functional capacity, muscle strength and autonomic function. METHODS Ten breast cancer patients in therapeutic follow-up (TG) and ten women without comorbidities (CG) participated in the study (46±8.87 years old). Both groups were evaluated at two time points, before and 20 weeks after the start of chemotherapy. Functional capacity and muscle strength were assessed by 6-minute walk test (6MWT) and handgrip test, respectively. Autonomic function was assessed by heart rate variability analysis. RESULTS TG presented greater reductions in the handgrip test for the non-dominant hand (TG ↓15.2%; CG: ↑1.1%, p<0.05) compared to GC. However, no significant differences were found regarding VO2max (p>0.05) and 6MWT total distance (p>0.05). Regarding the heart rate variability variables before and after follow-up period, rMSSD (CG= 39.15±37.66; TG= 14.89±8.28, p= 0.01) and SDNN (CG= 55.77±40.03; TG= 26.30±10.37, p= 0.02) showed effect in the group and time interaction, whereas the LF/HF ratio presented significant difference only in the time analysis (CG= 2.24±2.30; TG= 2.84±1.82, p= 0.04). CONCLUSION Chemotherapy used in the treatment of breast cancer patients resulted in decreased muscle strength and autonomic imbalance. The data suggests that chemotherapy may carry the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. TRIAL REGISTRATION Registration not required.

Abstract
Taste disorders are common among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, with a prevalence ranging from 20% to 86%, persisting throughout treatment. This condition leads to reduced food consumption, increasing the risk of malnutrition. Malnutrition is associated not only with worse treatment efficacy and poor disease prognosis but also with reduced functional status and quality of life. The fruit of Synsepalum dulcificum (Daniell), commonly known as miracle berry or miracle fruit, contains miraculin, a taste-modifying protein with profound effects on taste perception. The CLINMIR Protocol is a triple-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial designed to evaluate the regular consumption of a food supplement containing a miraculin-based novel food, dried miracle berry (DMB), on the taste perception (measured through electrogustometry) and nutritional status (evaluated through the GLIM Criteria) of malnourished cancer patients under active antineoplastic treatment. To this end, a pilot study was designed with 30 randomized patients divided into three study arms (150 mg DMB + 150 mg freeze-dried strawberries, 300 mg DMB, or placebo) for three months. Throughout the five main visits, an exhaustive assessment of different parameters susceptible to improvement through regular consumption of the miraculin-based food supplement will be conducted, including electrical and chemical taste perception, smell perception, nutritional and morphofunctional assessment, diet, quality of life, the fatty acid profile of erythrocytes, levels of inflammatory and cancer-associated cytokines, oxidative stress, antioxidant defense system, plasma metabolomics, and saliva and stool microbiota. The primary anticipated result is that malnourished cancer patients with taste distortion who consume the miraculin-based food supplement will report an improvement in food taste perception. This improvement translates into increased food intake, thereby ameliorating their nutritional status and mitigating associated risks. Additionally, the study aims to pinpoint the optimal dosage that provides maximal benefits. The protocol adheres to the SPIRIT 2013 Statement, which provides evidence-based recommendations and is widely endorsed as an international standard for trial protocols. Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by progressive and generalized loss of muscle mass and strength, observed to varying degrees in patients with various chronic conditions. In cirrhotic patients, it reflects protein-energy malnutrition due to metabolic protein imbalance and is associated with worsened prognosis and reduced post-liver transplantation survival. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the epidemiological distribution of diminished hand grip (HG) strength in cirrhotic patients at an outpatient clinic of Santa Casa de Misericórdia in Vitória-ES, Brazil, seeking its association with liver function and cirrhosis complications. METHODS Cross-sectional, epidemiological, and single-center study. A questionnaire was administered to patients and HG strength was measured using a dynamometer, with three interval measures taken for 3 seconds each. RESULTS The study's total population was 64 cirrhotic patients, with a mean age of 58 years and alcohol as the most prevalent etiology. Reduced HG strength was defined based on two reference values: using cutoff point 1, reduced HG strength was identified in 33 patients (51.6%); according to cutoff point 2, 23 (35.9%) had reduced HG strength. The study showed that, among the parameters observed, there was an association between the female gender and diminished HG strength in both cutoff points. Additionally, it was noted that patients with a score of 15 or more on the Model for End-Stage Liver Disease (MELD) had decreased HG strength at cutoff point 2. The study showed no association between decreased HG strength and the occurrence of cirrhosis complications in the population studied. CONCLUSION In our study, we obtained a diminished HG strength variation of 35-52%, which was related to higher MELD scores, suggesting an association with worse clinical outcomes. Therefore, the presence of reduced muscle strength in cirrhotic patients may be linked to prognostic factors and should be valued as clinical data in the management of these patients.

Abstract
Sarcopenia and disability in older adults are often characterized by body composition measurements; however, the gold standard of body composition measurement, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), is expensive to acquire and maintain, making its use in low and middle income countries (LMIC) it out-of-reach in developing nations. Because these LMIC will bear a disproportionate amount of chronic disease burden due to global aging trends, it is important that reliable, low-cost surrogates need to be developed. Handgrip strength (HGS) is a reliable measure of disability in older adults but has not been used widely in diverse populations. This study compared HGS to multiple measurements of body composition in older adults from the US (Kansas) and a middle-income country (Costa Rica) to test if HGS is a cross-culturally appropriate predictive measure that yields reliable estimates across developed and developing nations. Percent body fat (%BF), lean tissue mass index (LTMI), appendicular lean soft tissue index (ALSTI), body fat mass index (BFMI), bone mineral density (BMD), and HGS were measured in older Costa Ricans (n = 78) and Kansans (n = 100). HGS predicted lean arm mass with equal accuracy for both samples (p ≤ 0.05 for all groups), indicating that it is a reliable, low-cost and widely available estimate of upper body lean muscle mass. Older adults from Costa Rica showed different body composition overall and HGS than controls from Kansas. Handgrip operates equivalently in the US and Mesoamerica and is a valid estimate of lean arm muscle mass as derived by the more expensive DEXA.

Abstract
Sensing the interaction between the pilot and the control inceptors can provide important information about the pilot's activity during flight, potentially enabling the objective measurement of the pilot workload, the application of preventive actions against loss of situational awareness, and the identification of the insurgence of adverse couplings with the vehicle dynamics. This work presents an innovative pressure-sensing device developed to be seamlessly integrated into the grips of conventional aircraft control inceptors. The sensor, based on frustrated total internal reflection of light, is composed of low-cost elements and can be easily manufactured to be applicable to different hand pressure ranges. The characteristics of the sensor are first demonstrated in laboratory calibration tests. Subsequently, applications in flight simulator testing are presented, focusing on the objective representation of the pilot's instantaneous workload.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sarcopenia has a significant medical and economic impact. Serum fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19) has recently been described as promoting muscle mass and strength, and could be an interesting marker for early diagnosis of sarcopenia and prevention of its consequences. Ultrasound is a robust non-invasive technique used to measure muscle parameters, which cannot be evaluated by usual body composition measures, but are known to be associated with muscle function. In this cross-sectional cohort study, we aimed to determine whether FGF19 levels were correlated with functional muscle tests and muscle ultrasound parameters. METHODS Patients over 70 years old with a mobility disability risk were recruited from the cohort of the "well on your feet" mobility loss prevention program. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older Patients 2 (EWGSOP2) criteria. We have performed functional battery tests, muscle ultrasound measures and bioimpedance spectroscopy. FGF19 levels were measured by the ELISA method. RESULTS Out of 52 patients involved (34 women, mean age 81.3 years), 30 patients were sarcopenic (15 patients with probable sarcopenia and 15 with certain sarcopenia). Sarcopenic patients were older (mean 82.8 versus 79.6 years, P = 0.033), with higher frailty Fried score (P = 0.006), lower IADL score (P = 0.008), had lower daily protein intakes (P = 0.023) and were less performant to muscle functional tests than non-sarcopenic patients. Serum FGF19 levels were negatively correlated with the SPPB score (rs = 0.28; P = 0.045). FGF19 levels were correlated positively with the pennation angle (rs = 0.31; P = 0.024), but negatively with muscle fiber length (rs = -0.44; P = 0.001). We found no association between FGF19 and muscle thickness (P = 0.243). CONCLUSION We highlighted in older patients significant correlations between FGF19 levels, pennation angle and muscle fiber length, suggesting that FGF19 could provide an enabling environment for the development of large muscle fibers, as previously suggested in histological studies in mice. However, high FGF-19 levels were unexpectedly associated with a low SPPB score. Further studies are needed to validate and further elucidate these exploratory findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low back pain is a highly prevalent musculoskeletal disorder that leads to functional incapacity and absence from work. OBJECTIVE To analyze warehouse workers' prevalence and factors associated with low back pain. METHODS Cross-sectional study design with 204 male warehouse workers (stocker, separator, checker, and packer) from motor parts companies. Age, body mass, marital status, education, the practice of physical exercise, presence of pain, low back pain intensity, comorbidities, time away from work, handgrip strength, flexibility, and trunk muscle strength were collected and analyzed. Data are presented as mean, standard deviation, absolute and relative frequency. A binary logistic regression was performed, with low back pain (yes or no) as the dependent variable. RESULTS 24.0% of the workers reported low back pain with an average intensity of 4.7 (± 2.4) points. The participants were young, had completed high school education, were single and married, and had normal body weight. There was a more likely low back pain presence in separator tasks. Greater handgrip strength in the dominant (right) hand and trunk muscle is associated with no low back pain. CONCLUSION Low back pain prevalence was 24% among young warehouse workers, more likely in separation tasks. A greater handgrip and trunk strength can be a protective factor to no low back pain.

Abstract
Background Hand grip strength (HGS) is a fast, useful, and inexpensive outcome predictor of nutritional status and muscular function assessment. Numerous demographic and anthropometric factors were reported to be associated with HGS, while which one or several factors produce greater variations in HGS has not been discussed in detail. This is important for answering how should HGS be normalized for eliminating the influence of individual differences in clinical practice. Aims To compare the contribution of age, sex, height, weight, and forearm circumference (FCF) to variations in HGS based on a large-scale sample. Methods We enrolled 1,511 healthy undergraduate students aged 18-23 years. Age, weight, height, and sex were obtained. HGS was measured using a digital hand dynamometer, and FCF was measured at the point of greatest circumference using a soft ruler in both hands. Pearson's or Spearman's correlation coefficients were calculated with data of women and men separated and mixed for comparison. Partial correlation analysis and multivariate linear regression were used to compare the effect of variables on HGS. Results Analysis results confirmed the correlates of higher HGS include higher height, heavier weight, being men and dominant hand, and larger FCF. The correlation between HGS and FCF was the highest, and the bivariate correlation coefficient between weight and HGS was largerata of women and men were mixed, than that between height and HGS. When data of women and men were mixed, there were moderate correlations between HGS and height and weight (r = 0.633∼0.682). However, when data were separated, there were weak correlations (r = 0.246∼0.391). Notably, partial correlation analysis revealed no significant correlation between height and HGS after eliminating the weight effect, while the correlation between weight and HGS was still significant after eliminating the height effect. Multivariate linear regression analyses revealed sex was the most significant contributor to the variation in HGS (Beta = -0.541 and -0.527), followed by weight (Beta = 0.243 and 0.261) and height (Beta = 0.102 and 0.103). Conclusion HGS and FCF reference values of healthy college students were provided. Weight was more correlate with hand grip strength, at least among the healthy undergraduates. Abstract
Background Fatigue and muscle weakness are common complaints in COVID-19 survivors. However, little is still known about the skeletal muscle qualitative and quantitative characteristics after hospitalization due to moderate and severe COVID-19. Objectives To assess rectus femoris and vastus intermedius muscle thickness (MT) and rectus femoris echo intensity (EI) and to establish its association with demographic, clinical, functional, and inflammatory parameters in long COVID patients after hospital discharge. Methods Cross-sectional study with 312 COVID-19 patients (53.53% male; age: 54.59 ± 13.50 years), with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19. Patients were assessed 3-11 months after hospital discharge. We evaluated MT of the right rectus femoris and vastus intermedius and EI of the right rectus femoris using a portable ultrasound system, 6-13 MHz, broadband linear transducer. We corrected EI using the subcutaneous fat thickness. Ultrasonographic parameters were tested in association with demographic (sex and age); functional (Handgrip strength measurement, Timed Up and Go, 1 min Sit-to-Stand test, EuroQoL-5 Dimensions-5 Levels, World Health Organization Disability Assessment Schedule (WHODAS 2.0), Post-COVID-19 Functional Status, Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT), Medical Research Council (MRC) sum score, Borg Dyspnea Scale, MRC Dyspnea score, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Epworth Sleepiness Scale, Insomnia Severity Index, Functional Independence Measurement (FIM), and Functional Oral Intake Scale); clinical (length of hospital stay, intubation, and presence of comorbidities such as systemic hypertension, diabetes, obesity, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma), and inflammatory data assessed by the C-reactive protein and D-dimer serum concentrations. Results Rectus femoris MT was associated with age, handgrip strength, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and subcutaneous fat thickness (r2 = 27.51%; p < 0.0001). Vastus intermedius MT was associated with age, pain intensity, handgrip strength, Epworth Sleepiness scale, FIM, and time since hospital discharge (r2 = 21.12%; p < 0.0001). Rectus femoris EI was significantly associated with the male sex, TUG, Epworth Sleepiness Scale, and C-Reactive Protein levels (r2 = 44.39%; p < 0.0001). Mean MT of rectus femoris and vastus intermedius are significantly different (p < 0.001). Conclusion After hospital discharge, long COVID patients present qualitative and quantitative skeletal muscle characteristics associated with a combination of demographic, clinical, and functional parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Handgrip strength (HGS) is a simple, quick, inexpensive, and highly reliable method for the assessment of muscle strength in clinical practice and epidemiological studies. This study aimed at describing the HGS values by age group and sex in Brazilians aged 50 years and over, determining age group- and sex-specific cutoff points for muscle weakness, and investigating sociodemographic and anthropometric variables associated with muscle weakness for each sex. METHODS Data from the second wave of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil) were analyzed. HGS was measured in the dominant hand using a hydraulic hand dynamometer. Fractional polynomial regression models were fitted to estimate the percentiles (P5, P10, P20, P25, P50, P75, P90, and P95) of HGS by age group and sex. The P20 of the maximum HGS by age group and sex was used to define muscle weakness. Associations between sociodemographic (racial self-classification, place of residence, schooling, and monthly household income per capita in tertiles) and anthropometric variables (body mass index and waist circumference) and muscle weakness, by sex, were evaluated using logistic regression. RESULTS The analytical sample included 7905 participants (63.1 ± 9.1 years; 60% women). HGS reduced with increasing age in both sexes. Men presented higher HGS than women in all age groups. The cutoff points for muscle weakness ranged from 28 to 15 kg for men and from 17 to 9 kg for women. In the adjusted analyses, low schooling (0-4 years) was positively associated with muscle weakness in both sexes (in men, odds ratio (OR) 2.45, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.46-4.12; in women, OR 1.90, 95%CI 1.18-3.06). Low and middle monthly household income per capita also had a positive association with muscle weakness among women (OR 1.78, 95%CI 1.37-2.32; OR 1.32, 95%CI 1.01-1.73, respectively). Overweight had a negative association with muscle weakness among men (OR 0.66, 95%CI 0.52-0.83), and obesity was inversely associated with muscle weakness in both sexes (in men, OR 0.49, 95%CI 0.31-0.78; in women, OR 0.69, 95%CI 0.52-0.92). CONCLUSIONS This study provides HGS values and cutoff points for muscle weakness by age group and sex from a nationally representative sample of older Brazilian adults. The variables associated with muscle weakness slightly differed between men and women. HGS values and cutoff points generated can be used as benchmarks in clinical settings and foster future epidemiological research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Presently, physical inactivity is the main public health problem in many countries worldwide. Physical activity promotes the maintenance or improvement of one's physical condition. Physical fitness has been established as the main biological marker of the state of health of an individual, and therefore, there is a clear need to measure health-related physical fitness through the use of a reliable and valid instrument. This study is a continuation of the transcultural adaptation process and a new proposal of the nursing outcome Physical Fitness (2004), found in the 5th Edition of the Nursing Outcomes Classification. The objective of this study was to examine the validity and reliability of the nursing outcome Health-Related Physical Fitness survey, proposed and transculturally adapted to the Spanish context. METHODS An instrumental study to validate the nursing outcome Physical Fitness (2004), from the 5th Edition of the Nursing Outcome Classification was carried out. It took place between the months of May, 2016 to May, 2017. On the first stage, the instrument proposed Health-Related Physical Fitness survey was administered to 160 adults who used the Health Services of Murcia, Spain by three independent evaluators. After 4 weeks, it was administered again to 33 participants to calculate the intra-rater reliability. Lastly, the SF-12v2 Health Survey was administered to obtain external evidence of validity. RESULTS The inter-rater reliability of the nursing outcome proposed obtained high values (between 0.91-0.99) in the evaluations performed by the three evaluators. As for the intra-rater reliability, high values were obtained (0.94-1), except for the item "balance", which was moderate (0.56). Lastly, a positive and statistically significant correlation (p < 0.05) was obtained between the Physical Component Summary, and the dimensions Physical Functioning and General Health from the SF-12v2 Health Survey, and the global score of the Health-Related Physical Fitness proposed instrument. CONCLUSIONS The validity and reliability results of the nursing outcome Health-Related Physical Fitness survey, proposed and transculturally adapted to the Spanish context, were adequate for its use by nurses with adults who use the Health Services of Murcia. However, this instrument must be analyzed with more diverse samples of health services users.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to develop prediction models to estimate physical activity (PA)-related energy expenditure (AEE) based on accelerometry and additional variables in free-living adults. In 50 volunteers (20–69 years) PA was determined over 2 weeks using the hip-worn Actigraph GT3X + as vector magnitude (VM) counts/minute. AEE was calculated based on total daily EE (measured by doubly-labeled water), resting EE (indirect calorimetry), and diet-induced thermogenesis. Anthropometry, body composition, blood pressure, heart rate, fitness, sociodemographic and lifestyle factors, PA habits and food intake were assessed. Prediction models were developed by context-grouping of 75 variables, and within-group stepwise selection (stage I). All significant variables were jointly offered for second stepwise regression (stage II). Explained AEE variance was estimated based on variables remaining significant. Alternative scenarios with different availability of groups from stage I were simulated. When all 11 significant variables (selected in stage I) were jointly offered for stage II stepwise selection, the final model explained 70.7% of AEE variance and included VM-counts (33.8%), fat-free mass (26.7%), time in moderate PA + walking (6.4%) and carbohydrate intake (3.9%). Alternative scenarios explained 53.8–72.4% of AEE. In conclusion, accelerometer counts and fat-free mass explained most of variance in AEE. Prediction was further improved by PA information from questionnaires. These results may be used for AEE prediction in studies using accelerometry

Abstract
Maintaining or improving muscular strength may be a key preventive strategy for metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, whether the association of handgrip strength (HGS), as a well-established marker of whole-body muscular strength, with the prevalent metabolic syndrome (MetS) varies with age stratification remains unclear. Additionally, whether absolute of relative HGS is superior to another in predicting MetS is less clear. We examined the association of both relative and absolute HGS with the prevalence of MetS in different age groups. Korean adults aged ≥19 years (n = 28,146; 55.7% female) from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2014-2018) were examined. HGS was categorized using tertile split (highest, intermediate, lowest) and participants were stratified into different age groups at 10-year intervals. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the association between absolute/relative HGS tertiles and MetS with adjustment for covariates. Lower odds of MetS were observed across lower absolute HGS tertiles and the associations were significant in young participants (19-29 years) in both sexes (odds ratio (OR): 0.59 (95% CI: 0.38-0.92) for intermediate and OR: 0.55 (95% CI: 0.34-0.89) for lowest in males; OR: 0.36 (95% CI: 0.20-0.65) for intermediate and OR: 0.42 (95% CI: 0.24-0.74) for lowest in females; all p < 0.05). By contrast, higher odds of MetS were observed across lower relative HGS in all age groups in both sexes (in total participants, OR: 2.32 (95% CI: 2.06-2.62) for intermediate and OR: 3.69 (95% CI: 3.27-4.16) for lowest in males and OR: 2.04 (95% CI: 1.83-2.28) for intermediate and OR: 3.28 (95% CI: 2.94-3.65) for lowest in females all p < 0.05). The associations of both absolute and relative HGS with MetS attenuated with an increase in age. Our findings suggest that poor relative HGS, as a marker of muscular strength, and not absolute HGS, may be associated with a higher risk of MetS in adults. Our findings also suggest that relative HGS may overestimate MetS in young adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the prognostic relevance of sarcopenia has been increasingly recognised in the context of liver disease, there is a paucity of data evaluating body composition in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB). Beyond virus-related factors, nutritional and metabolic aspects can be associated with skeletal muscle abnormalities in these patients and should not be disregarded.
AIM To evaluate the association between components of sarcopenia and demographic, clinical, lifestyle, nutritional, and biochemical variables in CHB patients.
METHODS Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) was used to assess muscle mass by quantifying appendicular lean mass (ALM) adjusted for body mass index (ALMBMI). Muscle function was evaluated by hand grip strength (HGS) and the timed up and go test. Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) was defined according to the criteria proposed by an international expert panel. A body shape index and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire were used to assess central obesity and physical activity level, respectively.
RESULTS This cross-sectional study included 105 CHB outpatients followed at the tertiary care ambulatory centre (mean age, 48.5 ± 12.0 years; 58.1% males; 76.2% without cirrhosis; 23.8% with compensated cirrhosis). The DXA-derived fat mass percentage was inversely correlated with the ALMBMI (r = - 0.87) and HGS (r = - 0.63). In the multivariable analysis, MAFLD, sedentarism and central obesity were positively and independently associated with low ALMBMI. MAFLD and central obesity were independently associated with low HGS.
CONCLUSION MAFLD and central obesity were associated with low muscle mass and strength in patients with chronic hepatitis B, independent of the liver disease stage.

Association between changes in working status and hand-grip strength among Korean middle-aged and older adults: a longitudinal panel study. Sci Rep 2022; 12:12897. Abstract
We investigated the association between working status changes and hand-grip strength (HGS) among middle-aged and older Korean adults using data from the 2006–2018 Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging. After excluding those with less than normal HGS in the baseline year, newly added panels, and missing values, 3843 participants (2106 men; 1737 women) were finally included. After adjusting for potential confounders, we used a 2-year lagged multivariable generalized estimating equation model to examine this association longitudinally. Men who quit working or who continued to be non-working were more likely to have lower HGS than those who continued to work (working → non-working, adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 1.47, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.26–1.70; non-working → non-working, adjusted OR: 1.52, 95% CI 1.34–1.72). Compared to women who continued to work, the other three groups showed high ORs with low HGS (working → non-working, adjusted OR: 1.19, 95% CI 1.01–1.40; non-working → working, adjusted OR: 1.18, 95% CI 0.98–1.42; non-working → non-working, adjusted OR: 1.38, 95% CI 1.22–1.56). Middle-aged and older adults whose working status changed to non-working were at higher risk of reduced HGS than others and required muscular strength training interventions to improve HGS and prevent sarcopenia.

Abstract
Background mixed evidence exists on the association between muscle strength and mortality in older adults, in particular for cancer mortality. Aim to examine the dose–response association of objectively handgrip strength with all-cause and cancer mortality. Study Design and Setting data from consecutive waves from the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe comprising 27 European countries and Israel were retrieved. Overall, 54,807 men (45.2%; 128,753 observations) and 66,576 women (54.8%; 159,591 observations) aged 64.0 (SD 9.6) and 63.9 (SD 10.2) years, respectively, were included. Cox regression and Fine-Grey sub-distribution method were conducted. Results during the follow-up period (896,836 person-year), the fully adjusted model showed the lowest significant risk estimates for the highest third of handgrip strength when compared with the first third (reference) in men (hazard ratio [HR], 0.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.34–0.50) and women (HR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.30–0.49) for all-cause mortality. We identified a maximal threshold for reducing the risk of all-cause mortality for men (42 kg) and women (25 kg), as well as a linear dose–response association in participants aged 65 or over. No robust association for cancer mortality was observed. Conclusion these results indicate an inverse dose–response association between incremental levels of handgrip and all-cause mortality in older adults up to 42 kg for men and 25 kg for women, and a full linear association for participants aged 65 years or over. These findings warrant preventive strategies for older adults with low levels of handgrip strength.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronological age per se cannot be considered a prognostic risk factor for outcomes after elective surgery, whereas frailty could be. A simple and easy-to-get marker for frailty, such as handgrip strength (HGS), may support the surgeon in decision for an adequate healthcare plan. AIMS The aims of this study were to: (1) determine the prevalence of frailty in an abdominal surgery setting independent of age; (2) evaluate the predictive validity of HGS for the length of hospital stay (LOS). METHODS This is a retrospective study conducted in subjects who underwent abdominal surgical procedures. Only subjects with complete cognitive, functional, nutritional assessments and available measurement of HGS at admission were included. A final cohort of 108 patients were enrolled in the study. RESULTS Subjects had a mean age of 67.8 ± 15.8 years (age range 19-93 years old) and were mostly men. According to Fried's criteria, 17 (15.7%, 4F/13 M) were fit, 58 (23.7%; 24F/34 M) were pre-frail and 33 (30.6%; 20F/13 M) were frail. As expected, HGS significantly differed between groups having frail lower values as compared with pre-frail and fit persons (fit: 32.99 ± 10.34 kg; pre-frail: 27.49 ± 10.35 kg; frail: 15.96 ± 9.52 kg, p < 0.0001). A final regression analysis showed that HGS was significantly and inversely associated with LOS (p = 0.020) independent of multiple covariates, including age. DISCUSSION Most of the population undergoing abdominal surgery is pre-frail or frail. The measurement of handgrip strength is simple and inexpensive, and provides prognostic information for surgical outcomes. Muscle strength, as measured by handgrip dynamometry, is a strong predictor of LOS in a surgical setting.

Abstract
Objectives: To describe change in trunk flexor endurance and intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) associated with trunk flexor assessment and explore factors associated with change in trunk flexor endurance during the first postpartum year.Design: Ancillary analysis of an ongoing prospective cohort study.Methods: Participants (N = 282) were primiparous women delivered vaginally. They completed trunk flexor endurance testing while assessing IAP, body habitus measures (body mass index, waist circumference, and body composition), and questionnaires 5-10 weeks and 11-15 months postpartum. We investigated change in trunk flexor endurance by quartile of improvement and factors associated with improvement (Q4 vs. Q1-Q3) using multivariable models, adjusted for baseline endurance.Results: Mean age was 28 ± 5 years. The median (IQR) trunk flexor hold time increased from early to late postpartum (129/IQR = 68, 217 vs 148/IQR = 80, 265 seconds, p = .01) and mean (SD) IAP decreased (55/SD = 13 vs 48/SD = 14 cmH20, p < .0001). The most improved group (Q4) increased endurance time by 176 seconds (95% CI = 103, 254), were less likely to be Hispanic, more likely to be older, more educated, and have lower measures of body habitus than women in Q1-Q3. Conclusion: Trunk flexor endurance increased and IAP decreased over one year postpartum. Lower body habitus and higher age early postpartum predicted greatest improvement in trunk flexor endurance at 1 year.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Malnutrition in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients is prevalent and usually assessed by body mass index (BMI), which can lead to misdiagnosis. The subjective global assessment (SGA) is the reference method for this diagnose in hospitalized patients. In the last decade, new tools have emerged Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics-American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition [AND-ASPEN], European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism [ESPEN], and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition [GLIM]). Therefore, this study aimed to assess the concurrent and predictive validity of these tools in acute exacerbated COPD (AECOPD) patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS Prospective cohort study with hospitalized AECOPD patients. Malnutrition was diagnosed by SGA (reference method), AND-ASPEN, ESPEN, and GLIM consensus. Hospital length of stay (LOS) and mortality were the outcomes evaluated. RESULTS In 241 patients (46.5% males; 68.3 ± 10.2 years), malnutrition was found in 50.0% by SGA, 54.4% by AND-ASPEN, 20.2% by ESPEN, and 47.8% by GLIM. AND-ASPEN had the best accuracy (AUC = 0.837; 95% CI 0.783-0.841) and concordance (kappa = 0.674) with SGA and it was an independent predictor of prolonged LOS (OR = 1.73; 95% CI 1.01-3.37). ESPEN consensus did not agree with SGA, but was associated with prolonged LOS (OR = 2.57 95% CI, 1.27-5.20). The GLIM had good concordance (kappa = 0.533) and accuracy with SGA (AUC = 0.768; 95% CI 0.701-0.835), but was not associated with outcomes. CONCLUSIONS The AND-ASPEN was the most accurate tool for diagnosing malnutrition in AECOPD patients and was an independent predictor of prolonged LOS.

Abstract
Background:
Chronic liver disease is associated with malnutrition that negatively impacts a patient’s health-related quality of life (HRQoL).
Aim:
To evaluate the short-term effect of whey protein supplementation on the HRQoL and nutritional and functional status of patients waiting for liver transplantation.
Methods:
This was a double-blind randomized clinical trial with patients waiting for liver transplantation who were randomized into two groups: WP (whey protein supplementation) and the control (casein supplementation). Both groups received 40 g (20 g in the morning and 20 g in the evening) for 15 days. Nutritional and functional status were evaluated. Energy balance was calculated as the difference between energy intake (24-hour recall) and total energy expenditure (assessed by indirect calorimetry). The chronic liver disease questionnaire was used to assess HRQoL. All measurements were performed before and after the intervention.
Results:
Fifty-six patients were evaluated. Malnutrition was present in 56.9%, and it was directly associated with a poor HRQoL (p<0.05). No improvement on the nutritional and functional status was observed, in either group after protein supplementation. HRQoL improved after WP and casein supplementation, with no differences between groups (p>0.05). Patients who met protein requirements and had a positive energy balance demonstrated a higher HRQoL score (4.9, p<0.05), without between-group differences.
Conclusion:
Malnutrition substantially reduces HRQoL. Short-term WP or casein supplementation improved similarly the HRQoL.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disease-related malnutrition is associated with loss of muscle mass and impaired functional status. Handgrip strength (HGS) has been proposed as an easy-to-use tool to assess muscle strength in clinical practice. OBJECTIVES We investigated the prognostic implications of HGS in patients at nutritional risk with regard to clinical outcomes and response to nutritional support. METHODS This was a secondary analysis of the randomized controlled, multicenter, Effect of Early Nutritional Support on Frailty, Functional Outcome, and Recovery of Malnourished Medical Inpatients Trial, which compared the effects of individualized nutritional support with usual hospital food in medical inpatients at nutritional risk. Our primary endpoint was 30-d all-cause mortality. The association between sex-specific HGS and clinical outcomes was investigated using multivariable regression analyses, adjusted for randomization, age, weight, height, nutritional risk, admission diagnosis, comorbidities, interaction terms, and study center. We used interaction terms to investigate possible effect modification regarding the nutritional support intervention. RESULTS Mean ± SD HGS in the 1809 patients with available handgrip measurement was 17.0 ± 7.1 kg for females and 28.9 ± 11.3 kg for males. Each decrease of 10 kg in HGS was associated with increased risk of 30-d mortality (female: adjusted OR: 2.11; 95% CI: 1.23, 3.62, P = 0.007; male: adjusted OR: 1.44; 95% CI: 1.07, 1.93, P = 0.015) and 180-d mortality (female: adjusted OR: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.0, 2.10, P = 0.048; male: adjusted OR: 1.55; 95% CI: 1.28, 1.89, P < 0.001). Individualized nutritional support was most effective in reducing mortality in patients with low HGS (adjusted OR: 0.29; 95% CI: 0.10, 0.82 in patients in the ≤10th percentile compared with OR: 0.98; 95% CI: 0.66, 1.48 in patients in the >10th percentile; P for interaction = 0.026). CONCLUSIONS In medical inpatients at nutritional risk, HGS provided significant prognostic information about expected mortality and complication risks and helps to identify which patients benefit most from nutritional support. HGS may thus improve individualization of nutritional therapy.This trial was registered at clinicaltrials.gov as NCT02517476.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Screening of sarcopenia is proposed to identify patients who require the diagnosis of this condition. One of the proposed screening tools is Strength, Assistance with walking, Rise from a chair, Climb stairs, Fall and Calf Circumference (SARC-CalF). However, evidence for its applicability, especially in a hospital setting, is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association between "suggestive signs of sarcopenia using SARC-CalF" and clinical outcomes. METHODS Prospective cohort study with hospitalized patients aged ≥60 years was conducted, and they were evaluated within 48 h of admission using the SARC-CalF tool. Calf circumference and handgrip strength were measured, and the "timed get up and go" test was performed in all patients. The outcomes for testing the predictive validity of SARC-CalF were prolonged length of hospital stay, in-hospital death, hospital readmission, and mortality in 6 months. RESULTS Of the 554 patients (55.22 ± 14.91 years old, 52.9% males) evaluated, 17.3% were classified as having "suggestive signs of sarcopenia using SARC-CalF." In univariate analysis, "suggestive signs of sarcopenia using SARC-CalF" was associated with in-hospital death (P = .002) and mortality in 6 months (P = .004). However, in the multivariate analysis, these associations were not significant. CONCLUSION SARC-CalF was not an independent predictor of clinical outcomes during the hospitalization neither in the following 6 months of discharge.

Abstract
This pilot study explores the effects of a post-operative physical exercise program on the quality of life (QoL) and functional and nutritional parameters of patients that underwent laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, compared to usual care alone. The intervention group (IG) attended a 2-month-long supervised and combined exercise–training program during the post-operative period. Both IG and control group (CG) participated in the QoL, functional, and nutritional assessments before exercise training (T0), 2 months after the beginning of the exercise (end of treatment) (T1), and 2 (T2) and 4 (T3) months from the end of treatment. Eleven patients with colorectal cancer that underwent laparoscopic surgery were enrolled (six intervention; five control). The IG showed significant improvements compared to the CG in “Physical functioning” (PF2) (p = 0.030), “Cognitive functioning” (CF) (p = 0.018), and “Fatigue” (FA) (p = 0.017) of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life-C30 Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) at T1; in SMWT (p = 0.022) at T1; in PF2 (p = 0.018) and FA (p = 0.045) of EORTC QLQ-C30 at T2, in phase angle (PhA) of bioelectrical impedance analysis (p = 0.022) at T3. This pilot study shows that a post-operative, combined, and supervised physical exercise program may have positive effects in improving the QoL, functional capacity, and nutritional status in patients that undergo laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Handgrip strength (HGS) is an indicator of muscle strength, suited for evaluating the aging process. Its use depends on the availability of reliable normative reference values (NRV). The main objective of this study is to provide NRV of HGS for Brazilians aged 65 to 90 years. METHODS Participants were from the Frailty in Brazilian Older People research. 2,999 successful aging (SA) subjects comprised the development sample. HGS was measured using a hydraulic dynamometer. Obtaining NRV involved regressing HGS on age per sex-height strata, fitting separate fractional polynomial (FP) models for the mean and coefficient of variation. Model fit was assessed via standardized residuals, probability/quantile plots, and comparing observed to normal expected percentages of subjects falling within specified centile intervals. For validation, the latter procedure was applied to 2,369 unsuccessfully aging (UA) subjects. RESULTS Across strata, the best-fitting models for the means were FP of power 1. FP models for the CV indicated age invariance, entailing steady heteroscedastic age decline in SD since coefficients for the means were negative and SD = CV×mean. All models adjusted well. Centiles distributions for the SA and UA populations showed anticipated patterns, respectively falling on and below the normative expected centile references. Results (NRV) are presented in tables and centile charts. Equations are also provided. CONCLUSION NRV/charts may be endorsed for routine use, while still tested further. They would aid professionals caring for older people, not only to identify those at risk and eligible for immediate provisions, but also in planning prevention and rehabilitation measures.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is prevalent in hospital, and the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) has been widely used for its identification. However, in the last decade, new tools were proposed by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics-American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (AND-ASPEN), European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). The diagnostic test accuracy of these tools has been scarcely investigated. Thus, we aimed to compare the accuracy of AND-ASPEN, ESPEN and GLIM for malnutrition diagnosis in hospitalised patients. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted with hospitalised patients aged ≥ 18 years from a five-unit complex hospital. Malnutrition was diagnosed within 48 h of admission using SGA, AND-ASPEN, ESPEN and GLIM. The accuracy of these tools was evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) curve, considering SGA as reference, which was compared by the DeLong test. RESULTS Six hundred patients (55.7 ± 14.8 years, 51.3% male) were evaluated. AND-ASPEN [AUROC 0.846; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.810-0.883] and GLIM presented a satisfactory accuracy (AUROC 0.842; 95% CI, 0.807-0.877), whereas ESPEN had a substantially lower accuracy (AUROC, 0.572; 95% CI, 0.522-0.622). The AUROC of AND-ASPEN and GLIM were not different from each other (p = 0.785) and both had significantly higher accuracy than ESPEN (p < 0.001). AND-ASPEN and GLIM presented sensitivity, specificity and negative predictive value > 80%, whereas ESPEN sensitivity was < 20%. CONCLUSIONS AND-ASPEN and GLIM were accurate methods for diagnosing malnutrition and could be applied in hospitalised patients. By contrast, the ESPEN criteria had unsatisfactory accuracy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Handgrip strength (HGS) is a potential predictor of outcomes in cancer setting. However, reference values for this population are lacking. The study aimed to describe reference values and cutoff point for HGS in adults with incurable cancer in Brazil and to verify the association of reference values with prognostic. METHODS Secondary analysis of a prospective cohort, conducted with 1,868 patients at the National Cancer Institute in Brazil were analyzed. HGS (kg) data were obtained with a Jamar® hydraulic dynamometer. Description of percentile values of HGS was stratified by sex and age groups. Receiver operating characteristic curve was performed to determine the optimal HGS cutoff point by sex and age according to performance status. Kaplan-Meier curves was used to analyze the probability of survival and Cox's proportional model used to identify whether HGS predict 180-d mortality. RESULTS HGS value was significantly higher in male than in female and decreased with increasing age. Sex-specific HGS cutoff values ranged from 32.5 to 24.5 kg in males and 20.5 to 18.5 kg in females (with younger adults stronger than the older ones). When compared to HGS ≥50th, patients with HGS ≤10th percentile had significantly lower survival, as well as patients classified below the HGS cutoff point. In addition, patients with lower HGS percentiles showed increased risk of mortality regardless of sex and age. CONCLUSION Reference values can inform the clinical assessment of HGS, which is recognized as an important part of the identification of patients with incurable cancer with reduced physical function and short survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Swimming performance is influenced by several parameters, such as body composition, anthropometric and physiological parameters. However, the level of relative contributions of these variables to swimming performance in different age groups is unclear. Characteristics of body composition, anthropometry and neuromuscular variables were evaluated to identify determinant variables on 100- and 400-meter freestyle swimming events. METHODS Sixty swimmers from both sexes participated in the study. They were divided into three groups: 11, 12 years old (G1), 13, 14 years old (G2) and 15 to 23 years old (G3). Pearson's correlation and Stepwise multiple regression models were fitted to determine the relationships between performance and the parameters evaluated. RESULTS Results show that age plays a major role for G1 [(Time (100-m) = 236.737 - 13.323 (Age), r2= 0.51 and Time (400-m) = 831.070 - 39.014 (Age), r2=0.35]. Lean body mass, muscular power and anthropometric parameters were determinants of performance on G2 [(Time (100-m) = 81.964 - 0.504 (Lean) - 0.566 (CMJ Power) - 0.493 (Trunk width), r2= 0.83 and Time (400-m) = 592.536 - 3.471 (CMJ Power) - 1.679 (Length lower limbs), r2=0.57]. Muscular strength and body mass were determinants of performance for G3 [(Time (100-m) = 80.273 - 0.201 (PT Knee Flex 60°/s), r2=0.56 and Time (400-m) = 219.632 - 2.608 (Handgrip strength) + 2.917 (Body mass), r2=0.70]. CONCLUSIONS These results contribute to the development of proper training programs for each age group (strength and power training are important to improve performance only after 13 years old) and to determine parameters of sports selection (antropometric variables are important for 100 and 400m swimming performance).

Abstract
The present study investigated the time course of repetitive maximal isometric grip strength, depending on the arm position, laterality (dominant vs. non-dominant side), and climbing level. The intervention aimed to provide a feasible indicator of maximal strength-endurance in climbing. Seventeen recreational (climbing level (CL): 6.8 (SD 0.5) on the Union Internationale des Associations d’Alpinisme (UIAA) metric scale) and eleven ambitious (CL: 8.7 (SD 0.6) UIAA metric scale) climbers (age: 27 (8) years; BMI: 21.6 (1.9) kg/m2; ape index (arm span divided by body height): 1.05 (0.18); training volume: 2.2 (1.0) h/week). Participants completed maximal isometric handgrip strength (Fmax) tests in four positions (left and right hand beside the trunk as well as left and right hand above the shoulder) plus twelve repetitive work-relief cycles, lasting 4 and 1 s where isometric strength, heart rate, and perceived exertion were recorded. Fmax differed between groups in nearly all positions. A large side × position × time × group interaction was observed for repetitive isometric grip strength (p = 0.009, ηp2 = 0.71). However, subsequent post-hoc tests did not reveal a significant difference between groups during each testing position. Additional correlation analysis between asymmetry and CL showed an inverse relationship for ambitious climbers (r = −0.71). In conclusion, the degree of grip strength decline did not relevantly differentiate between ambitious and recreational climbers. Thus, the time course of handgrip strength seems to mainly rely on maximal grip strength during the first contraction.

Abstract
Strength training is currently the most recommended primary therapeutic strategy to prevent and reverse the decline of muscle mass, strength, and functional deterioration associated with age. The aim is to provide reference values of handgrip strength (HGS) in the Basque Country population and compare the values with other populations. A total of 1869 subjects from the health-promoting programme for adults and older adults run by the Bilbao City Council were assessed using HGS with a digital dynamometer and anthropometric data measured by Tanita to obtain the mean values according to age distribution. From the 1869 subjects, 87.5% were women and 12.5% men. The HGS was higher among men than women, 32.4 ± 6.6 versus 20.1 ± 4.7 kg, respectively, p < 0.001 at all ages. Weak HGS cut-off points by age groups ranged from 31.0 to 23.8 and from 18.9 to 12.4 in men and women, respectively. The sample data were compared (d, t, and α) with those of other populations in all age groups (group > 60 years at 95% df, p < 0.05). A health-promoting programme appears to be effective in the general population in obtaining better values in the HGS test as age increases.

Abstract
Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and spondyloarthritis (SpA) experience several nutritional challenges and are prone to develop malnutrition. This observational study aimed to perform a comprehensive nutritional assessment of outpatients diagnosed with RA and SpA, as well as to evaluate methods to identify nutritional risk. Nutritional status was investigated by anthropometric measures, body composition (DXA, dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), and handgrip strength (HGS). Nutritional risk was classified by Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 (NRS2002) and malnutrition was defined by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria and fat-free mass index (FFMI; kg/m2, <16.7 (M), <14.6 (F)). Out of 71 included patients, 46 (66%) were abdominally obese, 28 (39%) were obese in terms of body mass index (BMI), and 33 (52%) were obese in terms of the fat mass index (FMI; kg/m2, ≥8.3 (M), ≥11.8 (F)). Malnutrition was identified according to FFMI in 12 (19%) patients, according to GLIM criteria in 5 (8%) patients, and on the basis of BMI (<18.5 kg/m2) in 1 (1%) patient. None were identified by NRS2002 to be at nutritional risk. Our study revealed high prevalence of abdominal obesity and low FFMI. Waist circumference was a good indicator of FMI. BMI, NRS2002, and HGS did not capture patients with malnutrition identified by DXA.

Abstract
INDRODUCTION Establishing which parameters to use for diagnosing malnutrition in hemodialysis patients is a challenge in clinical practice. The handgrip strength (HGS) has stood out as a method of assessing nutritional status. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the cut-off point for HGS in the assessment of the risk of malnutrition and inflammation in HD patients, and its association with other parameters. METHODS Study carried out in hemodialysis units in the city of Curitiba, Brazil. We obtained the cut-off point of the HGS through the ROC curve, using the malnutrition and inflammation score (MIS) as a reference. We checked the relationship (Odds ratio) between the variables "MIS" and "HGS" with the other study variables using the multivariate analysis (logistic regression). RESULTS We assessed 238 patients (132 men), between 18 and 87 years of age (median = 59). The HGS cut-off point for diagnosing malnutrition and inflammation according to the reference used was <14.5 kg for women, and <23.5 kg for men. According to the HGS criteria, malnourished patients were older (OR = 0.958), with lower arm circumference (OR = 1.328) and higher scores in the malnutrition and inflammation score (OR = 0.85). CONCLUSION HGS was significantly correlated with other nutritional assessment parameters. These results suggest that HGS is a valid screening tool to identify the risk of malnutrition and inflammation in hemodialysis patients.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is an independent predictor of mortality in patients with liver cirrhosis. However, evidence has emerged that skeletal muscles mediate their protective effect against sarcopenia by secreting myokines. Therefore, we investigated whether irisin was associated with sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis. This was an observational cross-sectional study of data collected from 187 cirrhotic patients. Sarcopenia was defined by computed tomography (CT) scans using specific cutoffs of the 3rd lumbar vertebra skeletal muscle index (L3 SMI). Morning irisin levels were obtained in all patients. Of the 187 patients, sarcopenia was noted in 73 (39%). Irisin concentrations were lower in sarcopenic patients (32.40 pg/ml [interquartile range (IQR): 18.70, 121.26], p < 0.001) than in nonsarcopenic patients. There was a weak correlation between L3 SMI and irisin levels (r = 0.516, p < 0.001). Multivariable regression analysis including L3 SMI, body mass index (BMI), very-low-density lipoprotein (VLDL)-cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), adiponectin, and irisin levels showed that L3 SMI (odds ratio [OR] = 0.915, p = 0.023), adiponectin levels (OR = 1.074, p = 0.014), irisin levels (OR = 0.993, p < 0.001) and BMI (OR = 0.456, p = 0.004) were independently associated with sarcopenia. Irisin levels are associated with sarcopenia in patients with liver cirrhosis. This paper addresses a gap in the literature and facilitates the future transition into clinical treatment.

Abstract
Introduction The active workforce is increasingly aging. However workload, as well as working time and intensity, sometimes remains unchanged. This can be an even more critical situation in older people, since occupational exposure associated with aging, will further reduce the muscle's ability to generate energy, which in turn facilitates the development of these age-related syndromes. This study aims to identify the normative values of handgrip strength for Portuguese workers in the automotive industry. Methods About 1225 employees were invited to participate in the study. The final sample consisted of 656 employees in the assembly area. The handgrip strength was measured in kilograms (kg) using the Jamar digital dynamometer. Sex-specific profiles of handgrip strength were designed by the Ordinary Least Square regression (OLS) analysis, where height, age, age squared, and height squared are entered into the models as determining factors of the maximum grip strength in both female and male groups. Results The peak mean values of handgrip strength in the group of women was 34 kg in the age group of 35–39 years, and in the group of men the peak mean was 52 kg in the age group of 25–34 years. The most pronounced decline in the female group appears in the age of 30–34 years of about 4 kg and the male group the decline occurs at 2kg below the peak force, in the age group of 40–57 year-olds. This study used a cut-off at 2 SD below by the sex-specific peak mean. Conclusion Normative values can help delineate the career path of workers because they portray risk values according to age, height, and gender. The normative values assist health and engineering professionals and ergonomists in adjusting task demands to the morphological and strength characteristics of the workers.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to determine whether measures of muscular fitness modify the effect of intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) during lifting on pelvic floor support. METHODS Participants, primiparous women 1 year after vaginal delivery, underwent the Pelvic Organ Prolapse Quantification examination, measurement of IAP via a vaginal sensor while lifting a weighted car seat, pelvic floor muscle force assessment using an instrumented speculum, grip strength using a hand dynamometer, and trunk flexor endurance by holding an isometric contraction while maintaining a 60-degree angle to the table. We dichotomized pelvic floor support as worse (greatest descent of the anterior, posterior, or apical vagina during maximal strain at or below the hymen) versus better (all points above the hymen). RESULTS Of 825 participants eligible after delivery, 593 (71.9%) completed a 1-year study visit. Mean (SD) age was 29.6 (5.0) years. One year postpartum, 55 (9.3%) demonstrated worse support. There were no differences in IAP during lifting or in other measures of pelvic floor loading between women with better and worse support. In multivariable analyses, neither grip strength nor pelvic floor muscle force modified the effect of IAP on support. In women with trunk flexor endurance duration ≥13 minutes, the odds of worse support increased significantly as IAP increased. No fitness measure modified the effect of other measures of pelvic floor loading on support. CONCLUSIONS Primiparous women with higher IAP during lifting and greater muscular fitness did not have reduced odds of worse pelvic floor support compared with those with lower IAP at the same muscular fitness.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to determine whether measures of muscular strength and fitness are associated with pelvic floor muscle (PFM) force 1-year postpartum in a population of primiparous women who delivered vaginally. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis is an ancillary study to an ongoing prospective cohort study and includes 203 primiparous women. Procedures collected 1-year postpartum included maximal PFM force, grip strength, trunk flexor muscle endurance, percent body fat, intra-abdominal pressure during trunk flexor endurance testing, intra-abdominal pressure during strain, and self-reported physical activity. RESULTS The mean (SD) age was 29.8 (5.0) years and the mean (SD) body mass index was 24.5 (5.2) kg/m. Nineteen percent were of Hispanic ethnicity. The median (interquartile range) PFM force was 5.05 (2.86-7.94) N. The median (interquartile range) trunk flexor endurance time was 146.0 (78.0-267.0), whereas the mean (SD) grip strength and percent fat were 32.4 (6.4) kg and 29.4% (10.0), respectively.There were no statistically significant associations between PFM force and any of the measures tested on analyses unadjusted or adjusted for self-report of doing PFM exercises. Of other factors evaluated, non-Hispanic ethnicity, increasing age, self-reported family history of pelvic organ prolapse or urinary incontinence, and normal and obese body mass index (both compared with overweight) were associated with lower PFM force. CONCLUSIONS In primiparous women 1-year postpartum, we found no associations between PFM force and measures of strength and fitness. This study's results are consistent with existing literature that specific, targeted, and consistent pelvic floor exercises are the best way to improve PFM strength.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is the loss of muscle strength and muscle mass with aging and is one of the major risk factors for metabolic diseases. Cross-sectional studies have shown that vitamin D is associated with sarcopenia in both men and women. We investigated the effect of vitamin D supplementation over 12 weeks on muscle strength, muscle function, and body composition in middle-aged women in randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial format. This revealed a significant difference in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels between the intervention and placebo groups. In addition, handgrip strength was improved, and the timed get up and go (TGUG) test and body fat content were decreased. This chapter presents a protocol for trial setup involving measurement of vitamin D levels, handgrip strength, the TGUT test, and body composition as readouts.

Abstract
Sarcopenia is defined as an age-related reduction in muscle mass and performance. Some of the most important risk factors include advanced age, malnutrition, and sedentary lifestyle. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of food intake and physical activity with body composition, muscle strength, and muscle function in a cross-sectional study of postmenopausal women. This analysis gave a positive association between physical activity and handgrip strength, calorie intake and muscle function, protein intake and fat-free mass percentage, and total fat intake and fat mass percentage. In addition, there were negative associations found between carbohydrate intake and muscle function, as well as total fat intake and fat-free mass percentage. This chapter presents a protocol for the study setup along with measurements of physical activity, handgrip strength, nutrient intake, and fat-free mass percentage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND although handgrip strength (HGS) is considered an excellent predictor of morbidity and mortality, there are few reference data available, especially across life from young to old populations. OBJECTIVE to investigate the reference values and determinants for HGS in a large Chinese adult population. DESIGN this cross-sectional study used data from the Tianjin Chronic Low-Grade Systemic Inflammation and Health Cohort Study ranging from 2013 to 2017. SETTING AND SUBJECTS in total, 37,707 Chinese adults aged 18-93 years with measures of HGS were included. METHODS HGS was measured using a handheld digital dynamometer. The percentile distribution of HGS, as well as mean (standard deviation) values of HGS, was calculated according to sex and age categories. The Pearson's or Spearman's correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression were also used. RESULTS the peak mean value of HGS was 45.2 ± 6.88 kg in men and 26.8 ± 4.65 kg in women. Different reference values for each sex and age category are present. The prevalence of low HGS was 7.69% in men and 6.46% in women. Multiple regression analysis showed that almost 72.5% of HGS variability can be explained by sex, age, height and weight. CONCLUSIONS the HGS reached peak at 40 years old, maintained or slightly lowered between ages 40 and50 and then start an accelerated decline after 50 years old. Reference values of HGS should be stratified by sex and age group. HGS variability can be largely explained by sex, age, height and weight.
