Abstract
Resveratrol is an antioxidant abundant in plants like grapes and peanuts and has garnered significant attention for its potential therapeutic applications. This review explores its chemical attributes, stability, and solubility, influencing its diverse applications and bioavailability. Resveratrol's multifaceted therapeutic roles encompass: antioxidant, cardioprotective, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-aging, and anticancer properties. While traditionally studied in preclinical settings, a surge in clinical trials underscores resveratrol's promise for human health. Over 250 recent clinical trials investigate its effects alone and in combination with other compounds. Commercially utilized in food, cosmetics, supplements, and pharmaceuticals, the resveratrol market is expanding, driven by microbial fermentation. Microbes offer advantages over plant extraction and chemical synthesis, providing cost-effective, pure, and sustainable production. Microbial biosynthesis can be attained from carbon sources, such as glucose or xylose, among others, which can be obtained from renewable resources or agro-industrial wastes. While Saccharomyces cerevisiae has been the most used host, non-conventional yeasts like Yarrowia lipolytica and bacteria like Escherichia coli have also demonstrated potential. Genetic modifications such as increasing acetyl-CoA/malonyl-CoA pools, boosting the shikimate pathway, or multi-copy expression of pathway genes, allied to the optimization of fermentation strategies have been promising in increasing titers. Microbial biosynthesis of resveratrol aligns with the shift toward sustainable and renewable bio-based compounds, exemplifying a circular bioeconomy. Concluding, microbial fermentation presents a promising avenue for efficient resveratrol production, driven by genetic engineering, pathway optimization, and fermentation strategies. These advances hold the key to unlocking the potential of resveratrol for diverse therapeutic applications, contributing to a greener and sustainable future.

Abstract
Citrus reticulata L leaves are one of the main post-harvest byproduct, containing bioactive compounds, that are usually undervalued. This work describes the development of a biorefinery process based on the application of supercritical CO2 (SC-CO2) followed by ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) combined with Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NaDES) to extract bioactive terpenoids and phenolic compounds from these leaves. Extraction temperature and pressure of SC-CO2 were optimized, obtaining the highest bioactive terpenoids content using 200 bar at 60 °C. A Box-Behnken experimental design showed that 57% of water in NaDES composed of Choline Chloride and Glycerol (1:2) as extraction solvent at 25 °C for 50 min were the optimal UAE-NaDES extraction conditions to obtain the highest bioactive phenolic content from the residue of the optimal SC-CO2 extraction. The optimum extract presented the highest bioactivity and polyphenol content determined by LC-DAD-MS compared with extracts obtained using only water or NaDES as solvent.

Abstract
Due to the urgent need for a transition to sustainable, zero-waste green technology, the extraction of bioactives from food and agricultural by-products and waste has garnered increasing interest. Traditional extraction techniques often involve using organic solvents, which are associated with environmental and health risks. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have emerged as a promising green alternative, offering advantages such as low toxicity, biodegradability, and the ability to dissolve a wide range of biomolecules. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent trends in the application of NADESs for extracting bioactive compounds from sustainable sources. The review explains the composition and principles of preparation and highlights various applications of NADESs in extracting different classes of bioactive compounds, emphasizing their potential to revolutionize extraction processes. By summarizing the latest advancements and trends, this review aims to support research and industrial applications of NADESs, promoting more sustainable and efficient extraction methods in the food and agricultural sectors.

Abstract
Citrus fruits (CF) are highly consumed worldwide, fresh, processed, or prepared as juices and pies. To illustrate the high economic importance of CF, the global production of these commodities in 2021 was around 98 million tons. CF's composition is considered an excellent source of phenolic compounds (PC) as they have a large amount and variety. Since ancient times, PC has been highlighted to promote several benefits related to oxidative stress disorders, such as chronic diseases and cancer. Recent studies suggest that consuming citrus fruits can prevent some of these diseases. However, due to the complexity of citrus matrices, extracting compounds of interest from these types of samples, and identifying and quantifying them effectively, is not a simple task. In this context, several extractive and analytical proposals have been used. This review discusses current research involving CF, focusing mainly on PC extraction and analysis methods, regarding advantages and disadvantages from the perspective of Green Chemistry.

Abstract
Recently, deep eutectic solvents (DES) have been extensively researched as a more biocompatible and efficient alternative to conventional solvents for extracting pigments from natural resources. The efficiency of DES extraction for the anthocyanin and carotenoid can be enhanced by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and/or ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) techniques. Apart from the extraction efficiency, the toxicity and recovery of the pigments and their bioavailability are crucial for potential applications. A plethora of studies have explored the extraction efficiency, toxicity, and recovery of pigments from various natural plant-based matrices using DES. Nevertheless, a detailed review of the deep eutectic solvent extraction of natural pigments has not been reported to date. Additionally, the toxicity, safety, and bioavailability of the extracted pigments, and their potential applications are not thoroughly documented. Therefore, this review is designed to understand the aforementioned concepts in using DES for anthocyanin and carotenoid extraction.

Abstract
The effective and affordable separation of oil and water, a crucial process in the safe handling of environmental disasters such as crude oil spills and recovery of valuable resources, is a highly sought-after yet challenging task. Herein, superhydrophobic PU sponge was fabricated for the fast and cost-effective adsorptive separation of oil and different organic solvents from water. Octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-functionalized Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell microspheres were dip-coated on the surface of porous materials via a dip-coating process, thereby endowing them with superhydrophobicity. Owing to the hydrophobic interaction between OTS molecules and oil and increased capillary force in the micropores, the resulting superhydrophobic sponge served as a selective oil-sorbent scaffold for absorbing oil from oil-water mixtures, including oil-water suspensions and emulsions. Remarkably, after the recovery of the adsorbed oil via mechanical extrusion, these superhydrophobic materials could be reused multiple times and maintain their oil-water separation efficacy even after 10 oil-water separation cycles.

Abstract
Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADESs) have been considered promising to replace traditional volatile and toxic organic solvents for the extraction of biologically active substances from natural sources. This work applied an efficient and ethanol-exclusion strategy for extraction of phenolic compounds from poplar type propolis using five known NADESs (lactic acid:1,2-propanediol 1:1, lactic acid:fructose 5:1, choline chloride:1,2-propanediol 1:3, choline chloride:1,2-propanediol:water 1:1:1 and betaine:malic acid:water 1:1:6). The selected NADESs' extractability was evaluated by measuring the concentrations of total phenolics and total flavones and flavonols in the propolis extracts obtained, which qualitative chemical composition was further determined in detail by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. It demonstrated that the chemical profiles of NADES and 70% ethanolic propolis extracts are similar. To expand the knowledge about the role of the applied solvents in the poplar propolis extraction process, the in vitro antimicrobial, cytotoxic and genotoxic activity of both NADESs and liquid NADES extracts were evaluated. The results revealed that the use of the selected NADESs as an extraction media for phenolic compounds from poplar propolis not only delivered a good extraction yield in some cases, but generally led to the preservation of propolis extracts' biological activity and even to the enhancement of their antimicrobial effect in comparison with the hydroethanolic one. Besides, the tested NADESs except for lactic acid:fructose and betaine:malic acid:water exerted low to negligible toxicity against normal cells treated and apart from lactic acid:fructose the remaining solvents demonstrated concentration-dependent moderate to subtle genotoxicity. There is a probability that not the supramolecular structure of the NADESs, but their components, played a key role for the observed biological effects. The present study has demonstrated an alternative approach for extracting the biologically active complex from poplar type propolis using NADESs, which could be useful for further pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical applications.

Abstract
Polyphenols are important constituents of plant-based foods, exhibiting a range of beneficial effects. However, many phenolic compounds have low bioavailability because of their low water solubility, chemical instability, food matrix effects, and interactions with other nutrients. This article reviews various methods of improving the bioavailability of polyphenols in plant-based foods, including fermentation, natural deep eutectic solvents, encapsulation technologies, co-crystallization and amorphous solid dispersion systems, and exosome complexes. Several innovative technologies have recently been deployed to improve the bioavailability of phenolic compounds. These technologies may be utilized to increase the healthiness of plant-based foods. Further research is required to better understand the mechanisms of action of these novel approaches and their potential to be used in food production.

Abstract
Edible blossoms and extracted oils from various parts of plants have gained the interest of researchers in recent years due to their strong antioxidant activity and their high content of vitamins. In addition, they contain a plethora of polyphenols, and they do not have high caloric content. The blossoms of Prunus dulcis (i.e., almond tree) are edible; however, they have not been examined in terms of nutritional value. The present study aimed to examine the nutritional value of almond blossoms, as well as their extracted oil. The fat content of the blossoms was 1.75 g/100 g dry weight (dw), while the defatted blossoms were found to contain 1.34 g/100 g dw of crude protein and 29.97 g/100 g dw of carbohydrates. In addition, the blossom oil was tested for its composition of fatty acids, polyphenols, and total carotenoids. According to the results, several important fatty acids for human health were identified, such as oleic (25.17%), linoleic (15.64%), and linolenic (10.15%). Simultaneously, a low oxidation index (COX), i.e., 4.05, and many monounsaturated (25.17%) and unsaturated (67.56%) fats were detected, while both polyphenols (51.86 mg GAE/kg) and carotenoids were in abundance. Finally, the combination of simple stirring with ultrasound (a green extraction method) was found to be the most appropriate method to ensure maximum amounts of various antioxidant compounds in the blossom extracts (i.e., polyphenols and L-ascorbic acid). After optimization, the total polyphenol content increased by 23.98% and L-ascorbic acid content by 6.96%. In addition, antioxidant activity was tested by different antioxidant assays and specifically FRAP, DPPH, and H2O2, which showed a corresponding increase (14.46, 17.23, and 8.79%, respectively). Therefore, it can be concluded that Prunus dulcis blossoms, besides being edible, are also highly nutritious, and their oil has nutritional value and deserves further exploration.

Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are potential biocatalytic media due to their easy preparation, fine-tuneability, biocompatibility, and most importantly, due to their ability to keep protein stable and active. However, there are many unanswered questions and gaps in our knowledge about how proteins behave in these alternate media. Herein, we investigated solvation dynamics, conformational fluctuation dynamics, and stability of human serum albumin (HSA) in 0.5 Acetamide/0.3 Urea/0.2 Sorbitol (0.5Ac/0.3Ur/0.2Sor) DES of varying concentrations to understand the intricacy of protein behaviour in DES. Our result revealed a gradual decrease in the side-chain flexibility and thermal stability of HSA beyond 30 % DES. On the other hand, the associated water dynamics around domain-I of HSA decelerate only marginally with increasing DES content, although viscosity rises considerably. We propose that even though macroscopic solvent properties are altered, a protein feels only an aqueous type of environment in the presence of DES. This is probably the first experimental study to delineate the role of the associated water structure of the enzyme for maintaining its stability inside DES. Although considerable effort is necessary to generalize such claims, it might serve as the basis for understanding why proteins remain stable and active in DES.

Abstract
Concentrated in the skins of red grapes are the anthocyanins, the primary colorants responsible for the fruits' reddish-purple color. These colorants are recognized for their significant antioxidant properties and potent nutraceutical and pharmaceutical ingredients. Nevertheless, their widespread use is compromised by the (i) need for more efficient yet sustainable downstream processes for their recovery and (ii) by the challenges imposed by their poor stability. In this work, these drawbacks were overcome by applying eutectic solvents and stabilizing agents. Besides, the anthocyanins were successfully loaded into a solid host material (approved in both food and pharmaceutical sectors) based on silicon dioxide (SiO2, loading capacity: 1extract:7silica m/m). Summing up, with the process developed, the extraction yield (21 mganthocyanins.gbiomass-1) and the stability (under 55, 75, and 95 °C) of the recovered anthocyanins were over three times better than with the conventional process. Finally, the raw materials and solvents were recycled, allowing an economical and environmentally friendly downstream process.

Abstract
Deep eutectic systems (DES) have shown increasing popularity in last decade; however, the number of studies on the potential toxicity towards living organisms remains scarce. These studies are of the utmost importance to infer on the claimed non-toxicity and biocompatibility of DES. Most articles published, at this moment, only evaluate the toxicity towards a cell model or in different strains of bacteria. For this purpose, in this work, the effect of two DES (betaine:sorbitol:water 1:1:3 and betaine:glycerol 1:2) and their individual components were evaluated at different concentrations after administered via intraperitoneal injection in zebrafish (Danio rerio). The total antioxidant capacity, lipoperoxidation, and the activity of various enzymes that work in different antioxidant pathways (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and glutathione S-transferase) were assessed. The results show no significant toxicity within the tested concentrations: up to 5000 µM and 3000 µM, for the assays using the system betaine:sorbitol:water 1:1:3 and for betaine:glycerol 1:2, respectively. The toxicity of individual components was studied up to 1000 µM. Based on the encouraging results that have been obtained, it is safe to conclude that these two deep eutectic systems can be used as the new class of environmentally friendly solvents.

Abstract
Color of a food is one of the major factors influencing its acceptance by consumers. At presently synthetic dyes are the most commonly used food colorant in food industry by providing more esthetically appearance and as a means to quality control. However, the growing concern about health and environmental due to associated toxicity with synthetic food colorants has accelerated the global efforts to replace them with safer and healthy food colorants obtained from natural resources (plants, microorganisms, and animals). Further, many of these biocolorants not only provide myriad of colors to the food but also exert biological properties, thus they can be used as nutraceuticals in foods and beverages. In order to understand the importance of nature-derived pigments as food colorants, this review provides a thorough discussion on the natural origin of food colorants. Following this, different extraction methods for isolating biocolorants from plants and microbes were also discussed. Many of these biocolorants not only provide color, but also have many health promoting properties, for this reason their physicochemical and biological properties were also reviewed. Finally, current trends on the use of biocolorants in foods, and the challenges faced by the biocolorants in their effective utilization by food industry and possible solutions to these challenges were discussed.

Abstract
The functionalization of glycosides with ionic compounds such as ionic liquids provides enhanced polarity for the labelled glycans thanks to the presence of a permanent positive charge. The chemical derivatisation of glycans with ionic liquids constitutes an emerging strategy to boost the detection sensitivity in MS applications. This allows the straightforward monitoring and detection of the presence of labelled glycans in complex matrices and in those cases where very limited amounts of material were available such as in biological samples and chemoenzymatic reactions. The use of ionic liquid based derivatisation agents can be further exploited for the labelling of live cells via metabolic oligosaccharide engineering for the detection of cancer biomarkers and for the tuning of live cells-surface properties with implications in cancer prognosis and progression. In this mini-review we summarise the latest development of the ionic liquid based derivatisation agents in glycoscience focussing on their use for sensitive MS applications.

Abstract
Antrodia cinnamomea is a precious and popular edible and medicinal mushroom. It has attracted increasing attention due to its various and excellent bioactivities, such as hepatoprotection, hypoglycemic, antioxidant, antitumor, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulation, and gut microbiota regulation properties. To elucidate its bioactivities and develop novel functional foods or medicines, numerous studies have focused on the isolation and identification of the bioactive compounds of A. cinnamomea. In this review, the recent advances in bioactivity, isolation, purification, and identification methods of active compounds from A. cinnamomea were summarized. The present work is beneficial to the further isolation and discovery of new active compounds from A. cinnamomea.

Abstract
A novel, simple and green temperature controlled-natural deep eutectic solvent emulsification liquid-liquid microextraction (TC-NADES-LLME) coupled with UV-vis spectrophotometry was optimized for preconcentration and measurement of chloramphenicol (CAP) in eggs, milks honeys and chicken meat. Four different NADES were prepared and investigated for the efficient extraction of CAP. The important parameters (pH, NADES-3 vol, Fe(III) amount and extraction temperature) affecting the extraction efficiency of the TC-NADES-LLME procedure were investigated and optimized using a chemometric approach. In this study, Fe(III), NADES-3 and extraction temperature were used as complexing agent, extraction solvent and emulator accelerator, respectively. Using optimized values, the linear range of the TC-NADES-LLME procedure was in the range of 0.1-300 µg L-1 with a coefficient of determination of 0.9991. The detection limit and enhancement factor were 0.03 µg L-1 and 285, respectively. The precision of the method has been confirmed in repeatability and reproducibility studies. Relative standard deviation of these studieswas<4.2 %. The matrix effect was investigated by adding three different CAP concentrations to the selected samples, and the results indicated the low matrix effect of the method. The TC-NADES-LLME procedure was successfully applied to determine and extract CAP in the selected samples.

Abstract
In the framework of introducing green strategies for food processing, the industrial orientation has shifted towards the replacement of conventional petroleum-based solvents with alternative eco-friendly ones. On this basis, the objective of this study was to synthesize a novel, tertiary, food-grade deep eutectic solvent, composed of glycerol, citric acid, and L-proline (GL-CA-Pro), and to test it as a solvent for the extraction of polyphenols from agri-food waste biomass. After an initial screening on various common residual materials (apple peels, lemon peels, orange peels, red grape pomace, olive leaves), evidence emerged that indicated GL-CA-Pro was more effective than other DESs commonly used for polyphenol extraction. Furthermore, extracts from red grape pomace (RGP) and olive leaves (OLL) were shown to contain higher level of total polyphenols and increased antioxidant activity. Process optimization for those two materials with the response surface methodology revealed that the major difference pertained to the extraction time. In addition, for both materials, GL-CA-Pro was shown to provide higher total polyphenol yields (53.25 and 42.48 mg gallic acid equivalents per g of dry mass, respectively) compared to water and 60% aqueous ethanol. However, the chromatographic analyses for OLL suggested aqueous ethanol was a more suitable solvent for some principal polyphenolic constituents. The RGP extract produced with GL-CA-Pro exhibited significantly stronger antioxidant effects compared to the aqueous and hydroethanolic extracts, but the outcome for the OLL extracts was diversified. It was concluded that GL-CA-Pro is a very efficient solvent for RGP polyphenols, but its efficiency regarding OLL was comparable to that of aqueous ethanol.

Abstract
This review paper gives an insight into the effective delivery mechanisms for health-promoting substances and highlights the challenges of using antioxidants and bioactives in foods. The selection criteria for choosing bioactives and their extraction in bioavailable form with their adequate incorporation techniques and delivery mechanisms are covered. Moreover, an overview of existing methods for determination of bioactivity is given. The importance of scientifically evaluating the effects of foods or food components on consumer health before making claims about the healthiness is aligned. Finally, a scientific perspective on how to respond to the booming demand for health-promoting products is given, and we acknowledge that despite the work done, there are still many challenges that need to be overcome.

Abstract
The increasing demand for the development of sustainable strategies to utilize and process agro-industrial residues paves new paths for exploring innovative approaches in this area. Biotechnology based microbial transformations provide efficient, low cost and sustainable approaches for the production of value added products. The use of organic rich residues opens new avenues for the production of enzymes, pigments, biofuels, bioactive compounds, biopolymers etc. with vast industrial and therapeutic applications. Innovative technologies like strain improvement, enzyme immobilization, genome editing, morphological engineering, ultrasound/supercritical fluid/pulse electric field extraction, etc. can be employed. These will be helpful in achieving significant improvement in qualitative and quantitative parameters of the finished products. The global trend for the valorisation of biowaste has boosted the commercialization of these products which has transformed the markets by providing new investment opportunities. The upstream processing of raw materials using microbes poses a limitation in terms of product development and recovery which can be overcome by modifying the bioreactor design, physiological parameters or employing alternate technologies which will be discussed in this review. The other problems related to the processes include product stability, industrial applicability and cost competitiveness which needs to be addressed. This review comprehensively discusses the recent progress, avenues and challenges in the approaches aimed at valorisation of agro-industrial wastes along with possible opportunities in the bioeconomy.

Abstract
Targeted oral delivery of a drug via the intestinal lymphatic system (ILS) has the advantages of protecting against hepatic first-pass metabolism of the drug and improving its pharmacokinetic performance. It is also a promising route for the oral delivery of vaccines and therapeutic agents to induce mucosal immune responses and treat lymphatic diseases, respectively. This article describes the anatomical structures and physiological characteristics of the ILS, with an emphasis on enterocytes and microfold (M) cells, which are the main gateways for the transport of particulate delivery vehicles across the intestinal epithelium into the lymphatics. A comprehensive overview of recent advances in the rational engineering of particulate vehicles, along with the challenges and opportunities that they present for improving ILS drug delivery, is provided, and the mechanisms by which such vehicles target and transport through enterocytes or M cells are discussed. The use of naturally sourced materials, such as yeast microcapsules and their derived polymeric β-glucans, as novel ILS-targeting delivery vehicles is also reviewed. Such use is the focus of an emerging field of research. Their potential use in the oral delivery of nucleic acids, such as mRNA vaccines, is proposed.

Abstract
Natural products from plants were extracted and widely studied for their activities against many disease conditions. The selection of the extracting solvent is crucial to develop selective and effective methods for the extraction and isolation of target compounds in the plant matrices. Pharmacological properties of plant extracts and their bioactive principles are related to their excellent solubility, stability, and bioavailability when administered by different routes. This review aims to critically analyze natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) as green solvents in their application to improve the extraction performance of plant metabolites in terms of their extractability besides the stability, bioactivity, solubility, and bioavailability. Herein, the opportunities for NADES to be used in pharmaceutical formulations development including plant metabolites-based nutraceuticals are discussed.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) have been proposed as more efficient and sustainable solvents to replace volatile organic solvents (VOSs). However, the drawbacks associated with their use are still limiting the regular application of bioactive compounds obtained from the processes they mediate as food ingredients. It is true that the number of ILs approved by the Food and Drug Administration for food applications is still low and mainly focused on the ones from the quaternary ammonium family. However, this trend is changing, judging from the evidence that industries are surpassing overgeneralization about ILs (on price and toxicity) and starting to consider the potential and performance of ILs as solvents. Despite the examples of industries applying ILs in their processes, the use of bioactive compounds obtained from IL-based processes as ingredients in food formulations is still a big challenge. The positive influence of carotenoids on diseases associated or originating from the inflammatory scenario including, among others, obesity, is not new. Moreover, it is also well known that the poorest population worldwide does not have the recommended intake of carotenoids, especially those pro-vitaminic A. In an attempt to help answer this issue, dietary supplements containing adequate doses of natural carotenoids are expected to be the solution, or at least, part of the solution for a healthier life, but also, to reduce hunger. Thus, complete studies evaluating the toxicological potential and the real viability of adding these bioactive compounds in food formulations proving (or not!) their safety to consumers and handlers are highly demanded. This work proposes to investigate the potential of carotenoids extracted from Bactris gasipaes feedstocks mediated by an ethanolic solution of an imidazolium-based IL. Thus, male Wistar rats were randomized in six different groups, supplemented or not by carotenoids extracted by IL or VOS, and fed by control- and/or high-fat-diets (HFD). The adipose tissue-liver axis was studied as a model to investigate the influence of the carotenoids on the levels of inflammation and oxidative stress markers. The main results showed that animals supplemented with carotenoids extracted with IL displayed improvements in serum parameters, besides lower metabolic efficiency, and antioxidant response on the liver, even when fed with HFD. However, animals supplemented with carotenoids extracted by VOS showed higher levels of pro-inflammatory markers and huge oxidative stress on the liver.

Abstract
Currently, on an industrial scale, synthetic colorants are used in many fields, as well as those extracted with conventional organic solvents (COSs), leading to several environmental issues. Therefore, we developed a sustainable extraction and purification method mediated by ionic liquids (IL), which is considered an alternative high-performance replacement for COSs. Carotenoids are natural pigments with low bioaccessibility (BCT) and bioavailability (BV) but with huge importance to health. To investigate if the BCT and cellular uptake of the carotenoids are modified by the extraction method, we conducted a comparison assay between both extraction procedures (IL vs. COS). For this, we used the Amazonian fruit Bactris gasipaes, a rich source of pro-vitamin A carotenoids, to obtain the extract, which was emulsified and subjected to an in vitro digestion model followed by the Caco-2 cell absorption assay. The bioaccessibility of carotenoids using IL was better than those using COS (33.25%, and 26.84%, respectively). The cellular uptake of the carotenoids extracted with IL was 1.4-fold higher than those extracted using COS. Thus, IL may be a feasible alternative as extraction solvent in the food industry, replacing COS, since, in this study, no IL was present in the final extract.

Abstract
In this article, we reviewed studies on the fruits of the jussara palm (Euterpe edulis Martius), an endangered Brazilian Atlantic Forest palm tree, also coined as "Superfruit." We summarized the chemical components of the pulp and observed biological activities in murine and humans, as well as the best practices involving the extraction of its target compounds, bioavailability, and stability of extracts. Jussara has shown a rich phenolic profile that justifies its antioxidant properties, in addition to a considerable lipidic and energetic value. As the main feature, the fruit possesses large amounts of anthocyanins that can be commercially explored as a food additive or cosmetic colorants. Recent studies emphasized jussara's antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and cardioprotective capabilities via reshaping of the gut microbiota. Further knowledge is needed to establish bioavailability and optimal serving size, as many of its antioxidant compounds go under chemical bioconversion in the intestinal tract. While extraction of phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, and oils have interesting results, more studies are required in order to reduce the use of conventional organic solvents and improve their stability and shelf life when added to food products, an area in which nanotechnology seems promising.

Abstract
Propolis is a resinous material rich in flavonoids and involved in several biological activities such as antimicrobial, fungicide, and antiparasitic functions. Conventionally, ethanolic solutions are used to obtain propolis phytochemicals, which restrict their use in some cultures. Given this, we developed an alcohol-free high-performance extractive approach to recover antibacterial and antioxidants phytochemicals from red propolis. Thus, aqueous-solutions of ionic liquids (IL) and eutectic solvents were used and then tested for their total flavonoids, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities. The surface-responsive technique was applied regarding some variables, namely, the time of extraction, the number of extractions, and cavitation power (W), to optimize the process (in terms of higher yields of flavonoids and better antioxidant activity). After that, four extractions with the same biomass (repetitions) using 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [C6mim]Cl, under the operational conditions fixed at 3.3 min and 300 W, were able to recover 394.39 ± 36.30 mg RuE. g-1 of total flavonoids, with total antioxidant capacity evaluated up to 7595.77 ± 5.48 μmol TE. g-1 dried biomass, besides inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enteritidis bacteria (inhibition halo of 23.0 ± 1.0 and 15.7 ± 2.1, respectively). Aiming at the development of new technologies, the antimicrobial effect also presented by [C6mim]Cl may be appealing, and future studies are required to understand possible synergistic actions with propolis phytochemicals. Thereby, we successfully applied a completely alcohol-free method to obtain antimicrobials phytochemicals and highly antioxidants from red propolis, representing an optimized process to replace the conventional extracts produced until now.

Abstract
Green solvents such as ionic liquids (ILs) unlock possibilities for developing innovative biomedical and pharmaceutical solutions. ILs are the most investigated solvents for compound extractions, as reaction media and/or catalysts, and a desired eco-friendly solvent to process biomacromolecules for biomaterial production. Investigations demonstrate that the tunable nature and physicochemical features of ILs are also beneficial for building up delivery systems through their combination with bioactive compounds. Bioactive compounds from synthetic origins, like ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and natural sources such as curcumin, flavonoids, and polyphenols are essential starting points as preventive and therapeutic agents for treating diseases. Therefore, the association of those compounds with ILs opens up windows of opportunities in this research field. This Review assesses some of the main and important recent information and the current challenges concerning delivery platforms based on ILs combined with bioactive compounds of both natural and synthetic origins. Moreover, the chemistry, bioavailability, and biological functions of the main bioactive compounds used in the ILs-based delivery platforms are described. These data are presented and are discussed, together with the main delivery routes of the systems.

Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are emerging as new media of choice for biocatalysis due to their environmentally friendly nature, fine-tunability, and potential biocompatibility. This work deciphers the behaviour of bromelain in a ternary DES composed of acetamide, urea, and sorbitol at mole fractions of 0.5, 0.3, and 0.2, respectively (0.5Ac/0.3Ur/0.2Sor), with various degrees of hydration. Bromelain is an essential industrial proteolytic enzyme, and the chosen DES is non-ionic and liquid at room temperature. This provides us with a unique opportunity to contemplate protein behaviour in a non-ionic DES for the very first time. Our results infer that at a low DES concentration (up to 30% V/V DES), bromelain adopts a more compact structural conformation, whereas at higher DES concentrations, it becomes somewhat elongated. The microsecond conformational fluctuation time around the active site of bromelain gradually increases with increasing DES concentration, especially beyond 30% V/V. Interestingly, bromelain retains most of its enzymatic activity in the DES, and at some concentrations, the activity is even higher compared with its native state. Furthermore, we correlate the activity of bromelain with its structure, its active-site dynamics, and the physical properties of the medium. Our results demonstrate that the compact structural conformation and flexibility of the active site of bromelain favour its proteolytic activity. Similarly, a medium with increased polarity and decreased viscosity is favourable for its activity. The presented physical insights into how enzymatic activity depends on the protein structure and dynamics and the physical properties of the medium might provide useful guidelines for the rational design of DESs as biocatalytic media.

Abstract
Jussara pulp (Euterpe edulis Mart.) is rich in bioactive compounds known to be protective mediators against several diseases. In this context, nevertheless, anthocyanins, the most abundant natural pigment in jussara, are sensitive to temperature, pH, oxygen, and light conditions, leading to instability during food storage or digestion, and, thus jeopardizing the antioxidant proprieties retained by these flavonoids and limiting industrial application of the pulp. The production of nanostructures, from synthetic and natural polymers, containing natural matrices rich in bioactive compounds, has been widely studied, providing satisfactory results in the conservation and maintenance of the stability of these compounds. The current work aimed to compare uniaxial and coaxial electrospinning operation modes to produce core-shell jussara pulp nanofibers (NFs). Additionally, the parameters employed in the electrospinning processes were optimize using response surface methodology in an attempt to solve stability issues for the bioactive compounds. The best experimental conditions provided NFs with diameters ranging between 110.0 ± 47 and 121.1 ± 54 nm. Moreover, the coaxial setup improved jussara pulp NF formation, while further allowing greater integrity of NFs structures.

Abstract
Among the bioactive compounds that are considered important for the food industry, anthocyanins, which are flavonoid compounds presenting antioxidant activity and are responsible for beneficial health effects, have received researchers' attention in the last decades. In addition, anthocyanins are highly reactive and can be used as indicators of foodstuff quality conditions, particularly as a packaging ingredient. Considering this line of work, the eco-friendly film is a novel packaging technology that arose from the concern to reduce non-renewable resources and their impact on the environment. These films can be vehicles for loading bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins. Among the contribution of films in the food industry, we can highlight several potential applications: i) smart film: assess food quality and safety, transmitting food information to consumers and increasing the reliability of their consumption without breaking the packaging; ii) active film: use to preserve food quality through the release of active agents; and iii) bioactive film: carry substances in desired concentrations until their controlled or rapid diffusion within the gastrointestinal tract so that they can promote its benefit to human health. Thus, this review presents anthocyanin extract's potential as a powerful tool to improve the development of eco-friendly films, directing its purpose to the application as smart, active, and bioactive films.

Abstract
With the rapid development of green chemistry, the design and application of the related methods and requisite solvents have received increasing attention in recent years. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are mixtures formed from a hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and a hydrogen bond donor (HBD). Generally, ionic liquids (ILs) and DESs have similar physical and chemical properties, and hence, find application in the same fields. However, DESs have many advantages over ILs, such as non-toxicity, environmental friendliness, low cost, and biodegradability. Thus, there are many areas where DESs play a key role and act as new, efficient green extraction solvents. DESs can aid the extraction and separation of different target compounds from a variety of samples, thus promoting the rapid development of sample pretreatment technology. As extraction solvents, DESs offer unique advantages. In dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME), DESs show incredible ability to extract residual drugs, metal ions, and bioactive components from complex matrices, which would require complicated sample preparation steps when using traditional organic extraction solvents. Compared with traditional organic extraction solvents, DESs have considerable merits of greenness, hypotoxicity, higher extraction efficiency, etc. Moreover, as a dispersant, a DES can accelerate the diffusion of the extractant in the sample solution during DLLME, owing to its benefits of miniaturization and low cost. Traditional dispersants such as methanol and acetonitrile have many disadvantages, including high volatility, flammability, and toxicity, while DESs are environmentally friendly. Therefore, the combination of DES and DLLME has recently gained prominence in the field of sample preparation. Additionally, the combination of DES and solid-phase extraction (SPE) has broad application prospects. By virtue of their diverse functions, DESs have been used as eluents, in combination with a solid-phase extraction column and a stir bar, to elute analytes from the sorbent surface. The molar ratio of the HBA and HBD is one of the important factors influencing the elution efficiency. DESs can be combined with magnetic multiwalled carbon nanotubes, magnetic graphene oxide, and other nanocomposites to specifically adsorb target analytes through hydrogen bonding, π-π forces, and electrostatic forces. In addition, the DES can be used in the synthesis of magnetic nanocomposites and molecularly imprinted polymers when combined with magnetic materials. Magnetic nanocomposites functionalized with DES show excellent performance and high efficiency in the extraction process. The combination of DES and magnetic materials would promote the development of magnetic materials for green chemistry and expand the application of DES to several other fields. However, to the best of our knowledge, research on the microstructure, physical and chemical properties, and extraction mechanism of DESs is still in its nascent stage. Therefore, exploring the theoretical mechanism and applications of new DESs with special functions would be an essential future research direction. This article integrates the research progress of DESs in extraction separation technology; introduces the preparation, properties, and classification of DESs; and summarizes the applications of DESs in DLLME and SPE.

Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) are a new alternative to toxic organic solvents. Their constituents are primary metabolites, non-toxic, biocompatible and sustainable. In this study four selected NADES were applied for the extraction of two medicinal plants: Sideritis scardica, and Plantago major as an alternative to water-alcohol mixtures, and the antimicrobial and genotoxic potential of the extracts were studied. The extraction efficiency was evaluated by measuring the extracted total phenolics, and total flavonoids. Best extraction results for total phenolics for the studied plants were obtained with choline chloride-glucose 5:2 plus 30% water; but surprisingly these extracts were inactive against all tested microorganisms. Extracts with citric acid-1,2-propanediol 1:4 and choline chloride-glycerol 1:2 showed good activity against S. pyogenes, E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans. Low genotoxicity and cytotoxicity were observed for all four NADES and the extracts with antimicrobial activity. Our results confirm the potential of NADESs for extraction of bioactive constituents of medicinal plants and further suggest that NADES can improve the effects of bioactive extracts. Further studies are needed to clarify the influence of the studied NADES on the bioactivity of dissolved substances, and the possibility to use such extracts in the pharmaceutical and food industry.

Abstract
Blueberry is a polyphenol-rich fruit bearing great bioactive potential. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) emerged as putatively biocompatible solvents that could substitute for toxic organic solvents in the extraction of fruit phenolic compounds for developing nutraceuticals or functional foods. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the gastroprotective effects and the biocompatibility of a blueberry crude extract (CE) obtained using NADES and of the extract fractions (anthocyanin-rich fraction - ARF; non-anthocyanin phenolic fraction - NAPF) in a model of ethanol-induced gastric ulcer in rats. CE was the NADES-containing, ready-to-use extract that was obtained using choline chloride:glycerol:citric acid NADES (0.5:2:0.5 M ratio). ARF and NAPF were the NADES-free fractions obtained by solid phase purification of CE and were investigated to identify the bioactive fraction responsible for the effects of CE. Animals were treated for 14 days with water, NADES vehicle, CE, ARF, NAPF or lansoprazole (intragastric) and then received ethanol to induce gastric ulcer. CE decreased ulcer index and preserved the integrity of gastric mucosa. The pretreatment with CE or ARF reduced glutathione depletion and the inflammatory response. All treatments, including NADES vehicle reduced protein oxidation and nitric oxide overproduction in ethanol-treated rats. Additionally, ARF increased short-chain fatty acids in feces. These findings suggest that NADES can be used to obtain biocompatible extracts of blueberry that exhibit gastroprotective effects with no need of solvent removal. The gastroprotective effects were mainly associated to ARF but NAPF and even NADES vehicle also contributed to some protective effects.

Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) play important roles in the extraction of active constituents in traditional Chinese medicine. Ultrasound-assisted DES has been used to extract flavonoids from Scutellaria baicalensis. Using the contents of scutellarin, baicalin, baicalein, wogonoside, wogonin, and oroxylin A as quantitative indices, different kinds of DESs have been optimized for extraction and betaine/acetic acid has shown the highest yield. The Box-Behnken response surface method (RSM) was utilized to select the extraction conditions with the highest yields. The optimal extraction conditions were as follows: the molar ratio of betaine/acetic acid was 1:4, the water content was 40%, the solid/liquid ratio was 1:100 g/mL, the extraction temperature was 52 °C, and the extraction time was 23 min. Compared with traditional reflux extraction using 70% ethanol as the solvent, ultrasound-assisted DES has a shorter extraction time and higher yields. Furthermore, anti-inflammatory activities of the two extracts by ultrasound-assisted DES and reflux were compared using RAW264.7 cells and the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) method, and they showed equal anti-inflammatory activities. The results demonstrated that the ultrasound-assisted DES method for extraction of flavonoids from scutellariae radix is simple, green, efficient, and reproducible. This research provides good method guides for the rapid and efficient extraction of flavonoids from natural sources.
