Abstract
Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are a class of artificially synthesised organic compounds extensively used in both industrial and consumer products owing to their unique characteristics. However, their persistence in the environment and potential risk to health have raised serious global concerns. Therefore, developing effective techniques to identify, eliminate, and degrade these pollutants in water are crucial. Owing to their high surface area, magnetic responsiveness, redox sensitivity, and ease of separation, magnetic materials have been considered for the treatment of PFASs from water in recent years. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent use of magnetic materials for the detection, removal, and degradation of PFASs in aqueous solutions. First, the use of magnetic materials for sensitive and precise detection of PFASs is addressed. Second, the adsorption of PFASs using magnetic materials is discussed. Several magnetic materials, including iron oxides, ferrites, and magnetic carbon composites, have been explored as efficient adsorbents for PFASs removal from water. Surface modification, functionalization, and composite fabrication have been employed to improve the adsorption effectiveness and selectivity of magnetic materials for PFASs. The final section of this review focuses on the advanced oxidation for PFASs using magnetic materials. This review suggests that magnetic materials have demonstrated considerable potential for use in various environmental remediation applications, as well as in the treatment of PFASs-contaminated water.

Abstract
Modification of silica purified from the Merapi volcanic ash with magnetic material of Fe3O4 and attachment of cetyl triamine bromide (CTA-Br) on the magnetic cored has been performed to provide recoverable and positive surfaced of natural adsorbent. The magnetic cored was prepared via co-precipitation and CTA-Br attachment was conducted by a facile strategy. Then, the modified adsorbents were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, and FTIR instruments and examined for removing anionic Cr(VI) from the water media. The characterization data confirmed that crystals of Fe3O4 coated by SiO2 that has been bound with CTA-Br have been successfully formed. Additionally, increasing CTA-Br loaded gives thicker lamination on Fe3O4@SiO2/CTA-Br, but the CTA-Br loaded with higher than 0.25 mmol, leads to the coating peeled out. It is also demonstrated that Fe3O4@SiO2/CTA-Br prepared with CTA-Br 0.25 mmol is ideal for Cr(VI) anionic removal, regarding to the highest adsorption and very good separation or recovery process. Moreover, the optimal dose of Fe3O4@SiO2/CTA-Br in the Cr(VI) removal was observed at 0.25 g/20 mL under condition of pH 3 for 60 min. The adsorption of Cr(VI) well fits the Langmuir isotherm model with an adsorption capacity of 3.38 mg g-1 and is in a good agreement with pseudo-second order giving kinetic constant at 0.005 g mg-1 min-1. Thus, it is clear that the natural adsorbent material with recoverable properties for more efficient and wider application of removal Cr(VI) contaminant was expected from this study.

Abstract
Protein N-glycosylation plays a critical role in a wide range of biological processes, and aberrant N-glycosylation is frequently associated with various pathological states. For global N-glycosylation analysis, N-glycans are typically released from glycoproteins mediated by endoglycosidases, primarily peptide N-glycosidase F (PNGase F). However, conventional N-glycan release by in-solution PNGase F is time-consuming and nonreusable. Although some immobilization methods can save time and reduce the enzyme dosage, including affinity interaction and covalent binding, the immobilized PNGase F by these traditional methods may compromises the immobilized enzyme's stability and biofunction. Therefore, a new approach is urgently needed to firmly and steadily immobilize PNGase F. To meet this demand, we have developed a spontaneous and site-specific way to immobilize PNGase F onto magnetic nanoparticles via Spy chemistry. The magnetic nanoparticles were synthesized and modified with SpyTag as a solid surface. The PNGase F fused with SpyCatcher can then be site-specifically and covalently immobilized onto this solid phase, forming a firm isopeptide bond via self-catalysis between the SpyTag peptide and SpyCatcher. Importantly, the immobilization process mediated by mild spy chemistry does not result in PNGase F inactivation; and allows immobilized PNGase F to rapidly release various types of glycans (high-mannose, sialylated, and hybrid) from glycoproteins. Moreover, the immobilized PNGase F exhibited good deglycosylation activity and facilitated good reusability in consecutive reactions. Deglycosylation of clinical samples was completed by the immobilized PNGase F as fast as several minutes.

Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have drawn great attention due to their wide distribution in water bodies and toxicity to human beings. Adsorption is considered as an efficient treatment technique for meeting the increasingly stringent environmental and health standards for PFAS. This paper systematically reviewed the current approaches of PFAS adsorption using different adsorbents from drinking water as well as synthetic and real wastewater. Adsorbents with large mesopores and high specific surface area adsorb PFAS faster, their adsorption capacities are higher, and the adsorption process are usually more effective under low pH conditions. PFAS adsorption mechanisms mainly include electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, anion exchange, and ligand exchange. Various adsorbents show promising performances but challenges such as requirements of organic solvents in regeneration, low adsorption selectivity, and complicated adsorbent preparations should be addressed before large scale implementation. Moreover, the aid of decision-making tools including response surface methodology (RSM), techno-economic assessment (TEA), life cycle assessment (LCA), and multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) were discussed for engineering applications. The use of these tools is highly recommended prior to scale-up to determine if the specific adsorption process is economically feasible and sustainable. This critical review presented insights into the most fundamental aspects of PFAS adsorption that would be helpful to the development of effective adsorbents for the removal of PFAS in future studies and provide opportunities for large-scale engineering applications.

Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have garnered attention globally given their ubiquitous occurrence, toxicity, bioaccumulative potential, and environmental persistence. Sorption is widely used to remove PFASs given its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. This article reviews recently fabricated sorbents, including carbon materials, minerals, polymers, and composite materials. The characteristics and interactions of the sorbents with PFASs are discussed to better understand sorptive processes. Various sorbents have exhibited high removal rates for legacy perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). Novel polymers with special design better remove long- and short-chain PFASs than other sorbents. Although hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions mainly drive the sorption of anionic, cationic, and zwitterionic PFASs, enhancing PFAS sorption on designed sorbents has mainly depended on improving electrostatic interactions. Pearson correlation analysis showed that PFOS sorption capacity of sorbents is positively correlated with their specific surface area. Newly discovered pathways, including the air-water interfacial adsorption, F-F fluorophilic interactions, and (hemi) micelle formation, can enhance PFAS sorption to a certain extent. In addition to PFOA and PFOS, the sorption of emerging PFASs, including aqueous film-forming foam-relevant PFASs, constitutes a new research direction. The functionalization methods for enhancing PFAS sorption and challenges of PFAS sorption are also discussed to provide scope for future research. The discussions herein may contribute to developing efficient sorption technologies to remove PFASs.

Abstract
Currently, due to an increase in urbanization and industrialization around the world, a large volume of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) containing materials such as aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF), protective coatings, landfill leachates, and wastewater are produced. Most of the polluted wastewaters are left untreated and discharged into the environment, which causes high environmental risks, a threat to human beings, and hampered socioeconomic growth. Developing sustainable alternatives for removing PFAS from contaminated soil and water has attracted more attention from policymakers and scientists worldwide under various conditions. This paper reviews the recent emerging technologies for the degradation or sorption of PFAS to treat contaminated soil and water. It highlights the mechanisms involved in removing these persistent contaminants at a molecular level. Recent advances in developing nanostructured and advanced reduction remediation materials, challenges, and perspectives in the future are also discussed. Among the variety of nanomaterials, modified nano-sized iron oxides are the best sorbents materials due to their specific surface area and photogenerated holes and appear extremely promising in the remediation of PFAS from contaminated soil and water.

Abstract
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are widely used in food packaging, non-stick pots, and surfactants. However, their persistence in the environment, hazardous nature, and potential for bioaccumulation and long-range transport have alarmed an increasing number of scholars and research institutions. Although several literature reviews on PFASs research exist, only a few of them have considered bibliometric indices. In this study, 3,373 PFASs-related articles published between 2001 and 2018 were analyzed using a bibliometric analysis method based on the Science Citation Index (SCI) Expanded. The software tools for mapping knowledge domain (MKD) (VOSviewer and Science of Science (Sci2)) were used to analyze the performance of contributors and PFASs research topics, hotspots, and trends. Our results reveal that the number of PFASs-related articles published annually has increased significantly, with most originating from the United States (followed by those from China). The Chinese Academy of Sciences has published the most articles. A comprehensive analysis of title, keywords, and keywords plus showed that PFASs research hotspots include humans, precursors, and detection methods, with the main focuses being environmental science, toxicology, and environmental engineering. The four main research topics of PFASs were identified, and a literature review was carried out for each one. Overall, this study can supply researchers with a deeper understanding of the development of PFASs studies and provide a comprehensive data reference for researchers to further grasp the research direction in this field.

Abstract
In this work, a 3D ternary core-shell Fe3O4@SiO2@MoS2 composite is synthesized by a hydrothermal technique and a modified Stöber method, where magnetic Fe3O4@SiO2 microsphere with the core of raspberry-like Fe3O4 nanoparticles is completely coated by the flower-like MoS2. Herein, the electromagnetic parameters of the composites are effectively tuned by the combination of magnetic Fe3O4 with dielectric SiO2 and MoS2. The obtained ternary composites exhibit remarkable enhancement of microwave absorption. The measurement results indicate that the minimum reflection loss (RL) of Fe3O4@SiO2@MoS2 composites reaches -62.98 dB at 1.83 mm with the effective absorption bandwidth (RL < -10 dB) of 5.76 GHz (from 11.28 to 17.04 GHz) at 1.92 mm, much higher than those of pure Fe3O4 particles and Fe3O4@SiO2 microsphere. It is believed that the improved performances come from the specific structural design and the plentiful interfacial construction. Further, the synergistic effect of the dielectric and magnetic loss as well as the promoted impedance matching also help to enhance the microwave absorption of the composites. The microwave absorption behavior of the composites conforms to the quarter-wavelength cancellation theory. Our study offers an effective and promising strategy in the structural design and interfacial construction of the novel magnetic/dielectric composites with high-efficiency microwave absorption.

Abstract
Herein, a Fe3O4 decorated attapulgite adsorbent (FA) is fabricated for the removal of Cd(II) from wastewater, and subsequently a feasible strategy for converting the saturated waste adsorbent to CdS/FA photocatalyst is reported. Owing to the in situ growth of Fe3O4 on the attapulgite (ATP), the FA adsorbents exhibit enlarged surface area and increased adsorption sites. More importantly, the strong interaction between Fe3O4 and ATP leads to changes of coordination environment around the O‒Fe‒O bond with the ATP. Based on the results of density functional theory calculations, the electrons are more readily transferred from Fe to O, and the hanging O atoms with more electronegativity act as the efficient adsorption sites for Cd(II), efficiently improving the adsorption performance of the Fe3O4 phases. Furthermore, the waste FA adsorbent could be conveniently separated from the treated water by magnets and converted to CdS/FA photocatalyst, which exhibits satisfying degradation efficiency for tetracycline with low concentration. This work provides a potential strategy to optimize the ATP-based materials for heavy ions adsorption and reutilize the waste adsorbents.

Abstract
A novel magnetic composite material, Fe3O4@SiO2/chitosan/graphene oxide/β-cyclodextrin (MCGC), was prepared by multi-step methods. Various methods were used to systematically characterize the morphology, composition, structure, and magnetic properties of MCGC. The results obtained show that the composite material has good morphology and crystal structure and can be separated quickly by an external magnetic field. The operation is relatively easy, and the raw materials used to prepare this material are economical, easy to obtain, and environmentally friendly. The performance and adsorption mechanism for using this material as an adsorbent to remove bisphenol A (BPA) and bisphenol F (BPF) from water were studied. The adsorption parameters were optimized. Under optimal conditions, MCGC was found to remove more than 90% of BPA and BPF in a mixed solution (20 mg/L, 50 mL); the adsorption process for BPA and BPF on MCGC was found to follow a Redlich-Peterson isotherm model and Pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The adsorption mechanism for MCGC may involve a combination of various forces. Recycling experiments showed that after five uses, MCGC retained a more than 80% removal effect for BPA and BPF, and through real sample verification, MCGC can be used for wastewater treatment. Therefore, MCGC is economical, environmentally friendly, and easy to separate and collect, and has suitable stability and broad application prospects.

Fluorinated Surfactant Adsorption on Mineral Surfaces: Implications for PFAS Fate and Transport in the Environment. SURFACES 2020. Abstract
Fluorinated surfactants, which fall under the class of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are amphiphilic molecules that comprise hydrophobic fluorocarbon chains and hydrophilic head-groups. Fluorinated surfactants have been utilized in many applications, e.g., fire-fighting foams, paints, household/kitchenware items, product packaging, and fabrics. These compounds then made their way into the environment, and have been detected in soil, fresh water, and seawater. From there, they can enter human bodies. Fluorinated surfactants are persistent in water and soil environments, and their adsorption onto mineral surfaces contributes to this persistence. This review examines how fluorinated surfactants adsorb onto mineral surfaces, by analyzing the thermodynamics and kinetics of adsorption, and the underlying mechanisms. Adsorption of fluorinated surfactants onto mineral surfaces can be explained by electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, and ligand and ion exchange. The aqueous pH, varying salt or humic acid concentrations, and the surfactant chemistry can influence the adsorption of fluorinated surfactants onto mineral surfaces. Further research is needed on fluorinated surfactant adsorbent materials to treat drinking water, and on strategies that can modulate the fate of these compounds in specific environmental locations.

Abstract
Aminosilane materials, with their low cost and ease of modification, have exhibited great potential for the adsorption of perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) from water. However, this kind of material may be facing two drawbacks during its application: low resistance to hydrolysis and difficulties in separation from the water matrix. This work proposed a strategy of grafting N-(2-aminoethyl) aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (AE-APTMS) on the surface of magnetic γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles by full utilization of the sorption sites provided by the aminosilane and the magnetism by γ-Fe2O3. The FTIR and XRD results verified the formation of the magnetic AE-APTMS nanocomposite. The core-shell nanocomposite showed a superparamagnetic property and an isoelectric point at pH = 8.2. Particularly, compared to the aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) nanocomposite, the AE-APTMS nanocomposite exhibited improved hydrolytic stability with 60% less loss of the amine groups during the 48 h adsorption process, as the longer alkyl chain hindered the aminosilane detachment. The AE-APTMS nanocomposite exhibited a rapid adsorption with the removal efficiency of 78% for perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and 65% for perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) due to the electrostatic interaction and hydrophobic interaction. The regeneration and reuse of the magnetic AE-APTMS nanocomposite were conveniently realized with the removal efficiency higher than 70% for both PFOS and PFOA even after 15 adsorption-desorption cycles. The stable magnetic aminosilane nanocomposite with the ease of separation may provide a new strategy to achieve the economical and effective removal of typical PFCs from water.

Abstract
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) are promising drug delivery carriers and hyperthermia agents for the treatment of cancer. However, to ensure their safety in vivo, SPIONs must be modified in order to prevent unwanted iron release. Thus, SPIONs were coated with silica layers of different morphologies: non-porous (@SiO2), mesoporous (@mSiO2) or with a combination of non-porous and mesoporous layers (@SiO2@mSiO2) deposited via a sol-gel method. The presence of SiO2 drastically changed the surface properties of the nanoparticles. The zeta potential changed from 19.6 ± 0.8 mV for SPIONs to -26.1 ± 0.1 mV for SPION@mSiO2. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area increased from 7.54 ± 0.02 m2/g for SPIONs to 101.3 ± 2.8 m2/g for SPION@mSiO2. All types of coatings significantly decreased iron release (at least 10 fold as compared to unmodified SPIONs). SPIONs and SPION@mSiO2 were tested in vitro in contact with human lung epithelial cells (A549 and BEAS-2B). Both nanoparticle types were cytocompatible, although some delay in proliferation was observed for BEAS-2B cells as compared to A549 cells, which was correlated with increased cell velocity and nanoparticles uptake.

Abstract
This article gives an overview of nanotechnologies applied in remediation of water contaminated by poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). The use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) in physical sorption and photochemical reactions offers a promising solution in PFAS removal because of the high surface area and the associated high reactivities of the ENMs. Modification of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) (e.g., oxidation, applying electrochemical assistance) significantly improves their adsorption rate and capacity for PFASs removal and opens a new door for use of CNTs in environmental remediation. Modified nanosized iron oxides with high adsorption capacity and magnetic property have also been demonstrated to be ideal sorbents for PFASs with great recyclability and thus provide an excellent alternative for PFAS removal under various conditions. Literature shows that PFOA, which is one of the most common PFASs detected at contaminated sites, can be effectively decomposed in the presence of either TiO2-based, Ga2O3-based, or In2O3-based nano-photocatalysts under UV irradiation. The decomposition abilities and mechanisms of different nano-photocatalysts are reviewed and compared in this paper. Particularly, the nanosized In2O3 photocatalysts have the best potential in PFOA decomposition and the decomposition performance is closely related to the specific surface area and the amount of photogenerated holes on the surfaces of In2O3 nanostructures. In addition to detailed review of the published studies, future prospects of using nanotechnology for PFAS remediation are also discussed in this article.

Abstract
Engineered magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) have been used in many fields. To prevent particle agglomeration, stabilizers or coatings are often required. While such coatings have been shown to enhance performances, the environmental impact or toxicity of stabilized or coated Fe3O4 NPs remain poorly understood. In an effort to understand the impacts of such coatings on the toxicity of Fe3O4 NPs, we used the transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) technique to characterize the gill and liver transcriptomes from adult zebrafish when exposed to bare and starch-stabilized Fe3O4 NPs for 7days, demonstrating remarkable differences in gene expression profiles, also known as differentially expressed genes (DEGs) profiles, in both tissues. Bare Fe3O4 NPs exerted greater toxicity than starch-coated Fe3O4 NPs in gill; in contrast, starch-Fe3O4 NPs triggered more severe damage on liver, though both bare and stabilized NPs appeared to share similar regulatory mechanisms. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions using six genes each for the two tissues verified the RNA-seq results. The surface coatings play an important role in determining the nanoparticle toxicity, which in turn modulate cell uptake and biological responses, consequently impacting the potential safety and efficacy of nanomaterials.

Abstract
The excessive use of antibiotics has led to various environmental problems; the control and separation of these antibiotics are important in environmental science. Herein, a novel mesoporous nanocomposite, Fe3O4@SiO2@mSiO2-CD, has been synthesized for the removal of antibiotic compounds from aqueous media. The well-designed nanocomposite is composed of β-cyclodextrin functionalized surfaces, ordered mesoporous silica shells with large radially oriented mesopores, and nonporous silica-coated magnetic cores (Fe3O4). The synergistic action of both the mesoporous structure and the accessible cavity of β-cyclodextrin ensures the good adsorption of doxycycline. Furthermore, the Fe3O4@SiO2@mSiO2-CD nanocomposite can be collected, separated and easily recycled from aqueous solution using an external magnet. The controllable synthesis of a core–shell structured mesoporous organic–inorganic hybrid nanocomposite, Fe3O4@SiO2@mSiO2-CD, which demonstrates good adsorption of doxycycline.![]()

Abstract
MAGE-1 (MAGE, for melanoma antigen), was identified by virtue of its processing and cell surface expression as a tumor-specific peptide bound to major histocompatibility complexes which was reactive with autolytic T cells. 3-Glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (3-GOPS) is frequently employed for the preparation of dense heterometal hybrid polymers which are used, e.g., for hard coatings of organic polymers and contact lens materials in the optical industry. In this study, we have improved a new immunological biosensor with indium tin oxide (ITO). Then, Anti-MAGE-1 antibody was covalently immobilized with 3-GOPS which formed a self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on modified ITO electrodes. Analytical characteristics such as square wave voltammetry, linear determination range, repeatability, reproducibility and regeneration of biosensors are determined. All characterization steps are monitored by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV). The developed biosensor has wide determination range (0.5fg-15fg/mL). To investigate long shelf life of the fabricated biosensor, the immunosensors were stored at 4°C for periods ten weeks. Futhermore, binding kinetics of MAGE1 to antiMAGE-1 is monitored by single frequency technique in real time. Additionally, Kramer's-Kronig transform was used to understand whether the impedance spectra of biosensor system are affected from the variation that occurred because of external factor. Morphological characteristics of constructed biosensor were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Real human serum samples were also analyzed by the proposed biosensor, successfully. A commercial ELISA kit was also used as a reference method to validate the results obtained by the biosensor. Finally, this biosensor was tried in real blood sample and that showed it could be utilized in clinical applications. This biosensor can be preferred due to it has a wide linear range and it can be prepared easily.

Su C. Environmental implications and applications of engineered nanoscale magnetite and its hybrid nanocomposites: A review of recent literature. JOURNAL OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS 2017; 322:48-84. [PMID: 27477792 PMCID: PMC7306924 DOI: 10.1016/j.jhazmat.2016.06.060] [Citation(s) in RCA: 149] [Impact Index Per Article: 21.3] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [MESH Headings] [Grants] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 02/16/2016] [Revised: 06/27/2016] [Accepted: 06/30/2016] [Indexed: 05/12/2023]
Abstract
This review focuses on environmental implications and applications of engineered magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (MNPs) as a single phase or a component of a hybrid nanocomposite that exhibits superparamagnetism and high surface area. MNPs are synthesized via co-precipitation, thermal decomposition and combustion, hydrothermal process, emulsion, microbial process, and green approaches. Aggregation/sedimentation and transport of MNPs depend on surface charge of MNPs and geochemical parameters such as pH, ionic strength, and organic matter. MNPs generally have low toxicity to humans and ecosystem. MNPs are used for constructing chemical/biosensors and for catalyzing a variety of chemical reactions. MNPs are used for air cleanup and carbon sequestration. MNP nanocomposites are designed as antimicrobial agents for water disinfection and flocculants for water treatment. Conjugated MNPs are widely used for adsorptive/separative removal of organics, dyes, oil, arsenic, phosphate, molybdate, fluoride, selenium, Cr(VI), heavy metal cations, radionuclides, and rare earth elements. MNPs can degrade organic/inorganic contaminants via chemical reduction or catalyze chemical oxidation in water, sediment, and soil. Future studies should further explore mechanisms of MNP interactions with other nanomaterials and contaminants, economic and green approaches of MNP synthesis, and field scale demonstration of MNP utilization.

Abstract
In this paper, we report a facile route to synthesize yolk-shell structured copper oxide@silica oxide (CuO@SiO2) spheres and their application to construct an electrochemical Formoterol fumarate (FF) sensor. The CuO@SiO2 was characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Further, FF was electrocatalytically oxidized at the CuO@SiO2 film modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE), which led to a sensitive determination of FF. The oxidation current of FF was linear with concentration in the range of 0.030-10 μM and the detection limit was found to be 5.0 nM (S/N = 3). The observed analytical parameters such as wide linear range, low detection limit and short response time were superior to previously reported FF sensors. Finally, it was demonstrated that the proposed sensor could be used for the selective determination of FF present in swine feed and tissues.
