Bright structural color films independent of background prepared by the dip-coating of biomimetic melanin-like particles having polydopamine shell layers

Interactions of Melanin with Electromagnetic Radiation: From Fundamentals to Applications

Melanin, especially integumentary melanin, interacts in numerous ways with electromagnetic radiation, leading to a set of critical functions, including radiation protection, UV-protection, pigmentary and structural color productions, and thermoregulation. By harnessing these functions, melanin and melanin-like materials can be widely applied to diverse applications with extraordinary performance. Here we provide a unified overview of the melanin family (all melanin and melanin-like materials) and their interactions with the complete electromagnetic radiation spectrum (X-ray, Gamma-ray, UV, visible, near-infrared), which until now has been absent from the literature and is needed to establish a solid fundamental base to facilitate their future investigation and development. We begin by discussing the chemistries and morphologies of both natural and artificial melanin, then the fundamentals of melanin-radiation interactions, and finally the exciting new developments in high-performance melanin-based functional materials that exploit these interactions. This Review provides both a comprehensive overview and a discussion of future perspectives for each subfield of melanin that will help direct the future development of melanin from both fundamental and applied perspectives.

Preparation of Natural Plant Polyphenol Catechin Film for Structural Coloration of Silk Fabrics

Traditional textile dyeing uses chemical pigments and dyes, which consumes a large amount of water and causes serious environmental pollution. Structural color is an essential means of achieving green dyeing of textiles, and thin-film interference is one of the principles of structural coloring. In the assembly of structural color films, it is necessary to introduce dark materials to suppress light scattering and improve the brightness of the fabric. In this study, the conditions for the generation of nanofilms of catechin (CC) at the gas-liquid interface were successfully investigated. At the same time, environmentally friendly colored silk fabrics were novelly prepared using polycatechin (PCC) structural color films. In addition, it was found that various structural colors were obtained on the surface of silk fabrics by adjusting the time. Meanwhile, the color fastness of the structural colored fabrics was improved by introducing polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) to form a strong hydrogen bond between the fabric and catechin. PCC film is uniform and smooth, with a special double-layer structure, and can be attached to the surface of silk fabrics, giving the fabrics special structural colors. Through the thin-film interference formed between the visible light and the PCC film, the silk fabrics obtain bright, controllable, and uniform structural colors. This method is easy to operate and provides a new way of thinking for environmental-protection-oriented coloring of fabrics.

Influence of Core Type and Shell Thickness on Avian-Inspired Structural Colors Produced from Melanin Nanoparticle Assemblies

Hollow melanosomes found in iridescent bird feathers, including violet-backed starlings and wild turkeys, enable the generation of diverse structural colors. It has been postulated that the high refractive index (RI) contrast between melanin (1.74) and air (1.0) results in brighter and more saturated colors. This has led to several studies that have synthesized hollow synthetic melanin nanoparticles and fabricated colloidal nanostructures to produce synthetic structural colors. However, these studies use hollow nanoparticles with thin shells (<20 nm), even though shell thicknesses as high as 100 nm have been observed in natural melanosomes. Here, we combine experimental and computational approaches to examine the influence of the varying polydopamine (PDA, synthetic melanin) shell thickness (0-100 nm) and core material on structural colors. Experimentally, a concomitant change in overall particle size and RI contrast makes it difficult to interpret the effect of a hollow or solid core on color. Thus, we utilize finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations to uncover the effect of shell thickness and core on structural colors. Our FDTD results highlight that hollow particles with thin shells have substantially higher saturation than same-sized solid and core-shell particles. These results would benefit a wide range of applications including paints, coatings, and cosmetics.

Polymer-Stabilized Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Films with Double Reflection Bands Prepared Based on the Competition between Photopolymerization and Photoisomerization

Composite colors have been widely found in nature. Herein, polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystal (PSCLC) films with composite structural colors were prepared through a one-step photopolymerization approach. The CLC mixtures were prepared using a mixture of acrylates and a mixture of two chiral dopants. One of the chiral dopants is polymerizable, and the other one is photoisomerizable. After photopolymerization, the PSCLC films with double Bragg reflection bands were obtained on the surface of a substrate. The competition between the photopolymerization of the acrylates and the photoisomerization of the chiral dopant was proposed to drive the formation of the double reflection bands. Without oxygen inhibition, the polymerization of the acrylates near the substrate surface was carried out. However, due to oxygen inhibition, the polymerization of the acrylates near the air was retarded. Then, the photoisomerization of the chiral dopant was carried out prior to the polymerization of the acrylates. The wavelengths of the double reflection bands were tunable by changing the concentrations of the acrylates and chiral dopants and the polymerization temperature. Colorful patterns with composite structural colors were prepared, which were suitable for decoration and anti-counterfeiting.

Co-Assembly of Colloids and Eumelanin Nanoparticles in Droplets for Structural Pigments with High Saturation

Colloidal crystals have been used to develop structural colors. However, incoherent scattering causes the colors to turn whitish, reducing the color saturation. To overcome the problem, light-absorbing additives have been incorporated. Although various additives have been used, most of them are not compatible with a direct co-assembly with common colloids in aqueous suspensions. Here, the authors suggest eumelanin nanoparticles as a new additive to enhance the color chroma. Eumelanin nanoparticles are synthesized to have diameters of several nanometers by oxidative polymerization of precursors in basic solutions. The nanoparticles carry negative charges and do not weaken the electrostatic repulsion among same-charged polystyrene particles when they are added to aqueous suspensions. To prove the effectiveness of eumelanin as a saturation enhancer, the authors produce photonic balls through direct co-assembly of polystyrene and eumelanin using water-in-oil emulsion droplets, while varying the weight ratio of eumelanin to polystyrene. The high crystallinity of colloidal crystals is preserved for the ratio up to at least 1/50 as the eumelanin does not perturb the crystallization. The eumelanin effectively suppresses incoherent scattering while maintaining the strength of structural resonance at an optimum ratio, improving color chroma without compromising brightness.

Preparation of Structural Color on Cotton Fabric with High Color Fastness through Multiple Hydrogen Bonds between Polyphenol Hydroxyl and Lactam

Structural coloration is an important way to realize eco-friendly dyeing of textiles. Structural colored cotton fabric was obtained by fabricating a polydopamine (PDA) film on the white cotton fabric at different polymerization reaction times. PDA is prone to generate capillary tension during film formation, which damages the uniformity and interfacial bonding force of the film. Multiple hydrogen bonds will form between the lactam group of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and the phenolic hydroxyl group of PDA. The introduced hydrogen bonds will effectively enhance the interfacial bond strength and lead to structural color with high color fastness. The surface morphology of double-layer aggregates of the PDA film on structural colored cotton fabric was revealed by scanning electron microscopy. The chemical constitution of the PDA film and PVP was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The color characteristics of structural colored cotton fabrics were analyzed by UV-vis reflectance spectroscopy and spectrophotometry.

Graphene Oxide/Reduced Graphene Oxide Enhanced Noniridescent Structural Colors Based on Silica Photonic Spray Paints with Improved Mechanical Robustness

In contrast to traditional pigment colors, structural colors have developed a great potential in practical applications, thanks to their unique nonfading and color tunable properties; especially amorphous photonic structures with noniridescent structural colors have attracted considerable attention and their applications have expanded to more fields. Herein, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) enhanced noniridescent structural colors with excellent mechanical robustness were established by a time-saving approach named spray coating, which allows for rapid fabrication of angular independent structural colors by spraying different photonic spray paints (PSPs) to ensure color multiplicity that was adjusted by the silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) sizes onto the substrates. The incorporation of poly(methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) (PMB) improved the adhesion existing among SiO2 inter-nanoparticles and between SiO2 NPs and the substrates, taking advantages of the low glass transition temperature (Tg) of butyl acrylate derivative polymer and made PMB embedded PSPs coated patterns being imparted with good mechanical robustness and abrasive resistance. The peculiar light adsorption of GO and RGO across visible light spectrum facilitate higher color saturation. The improvement in color saturation of GO and RGO doped PSPs is expected to boost the promising applications in structurally colored paintings, inks and other color-related optical fields.

Progress in polydopamine-based melanin mimetic materials for structural color generation

Structural color is a color derived from optical interaction between light and a microstructure and is often seen in nature. Natural melanin plays an important role in bright structural coloration. For example, the vivid colors of peacock feathers are due to structural colors. The periodic arrangement of melanin granules inside the feathers leads to light interference, and the black granules absorb scattered light well, resulting in bright structural color. In recent years, polydopamine (PDA) has attracted attention as a melanin mimetic material. This review article summarizes recent research on structural coloration using PDA-based artificial melanin materials. It also outlines possible applications using bright structural colors realized by artificial melanin materials and future perspectives.

Effect of the Polydopamine Composite Method on Structural Coloration: Comparison of Binary and Unary Assembly of Colloidal Particles

Melanin influences light reflection and absorption and is known to be one of the elements producing structural color, such as that in the feathers of birds. In this study, we used polydopamine (PDA), an artificial melanin, as a light-absorbing material and examined in detail the effect of its composite method on the structural color. The following two composite methods were investigated using cerium(IV) oxide (CeO₂) particles as a core particle: binary coassembly of CeO₂ and PDA particles and unary assembly of CeO₂@PDA core-shell particles. Although both methods dramatically improved the visibility of the structural color by suppressing the scattered light owing to the light absorption capability of the PDA, there was a difference in the particle arrangement, angle dependence of the structural color, and color tone change. By selecting the PDA composite method, the guidelines for providing high visibility and the desired structural color were presented.

Chiral Nematic Liquid Crystal Behavior of Core-Shell Hybrid Rods Consisting of Chiral Cellulose Nanocrystals Dressed with Non-chiral Conformal Polymeric Skins

The current work investigates how the nanoscale conformal coating layers of non-chiral polymeric materials can influence the chiral nematic liquid crystal (CLC) behaviors of the rodlike cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), the bio-derived nanomaterials that have attracted significant attention. For this, we developed strategies to coat the CNC rods on the single-particle level with a homogeneous bioinspired polydopamine (PDA) layer, leading to well-defined core-shell CNC@PDA rods with various PDA coating thicknesses and excellent colloidal stability. Comprehensive investigation revealed that the CNC@PDA hybrid nanorods in concentrated suspensions form well-defined nematic liquid crystal phases with clear phase separation behavior that depend on the rod concentrations and ionic strengths, typical of charged rods. Most intriguingly, the nematic LC phases formed by the CNC@PDA rods with the PDA coating thickness achieved herein are indeed the perfect CLC phases, which form following the classic pathway of nucleation and coalesce of chiral tactoids and have colorful chiral fingerprints standing out from the dark suspensions. The pitches of the CLC phase increase sharply with increasing PDA coating thicknesses and are significantly larger than those of the pristine CNCs. Such observations can be attributed to the blurring effects of the PDA coating on the intrinsic surface chiral features of CNC of whatever origins that drive the formation of the CLC phases, resulting in weakening chiral interactions between CNC@PDA rods. Besides benefiting the understanding of the long-sought origin of the CLC phases of the pristine CNC, the current work demonstrates the possibility of controlling the CLC phase behaviors of CNC by tuning the thickness of the coating materials and also serves as the first example of directly transferring the unique chirality of CNC to other non-chiral materials.

Rapid and Tunable Method To Fabricate Angle-Independent and Transferable Structurally Colored Films

The assembly of monodisperse particles into colloidal arrays that diffract visible light through constructive interference is of considerable interest due to their resilience against color fading. In particular, noniridescent structurally colored materials are promising as a means of coloration for paints, inks, cosmetics, and displays because their color is angle independent. A rapid and tunable assembly method for producing noniridescent structurally colored colloidal-based materials that are pliable after fabrication is described. Structurally colored particle arrays were fabricated by centrifuging highly charged silica particles suspended in deionized water. By tuning the particle diameter, the colors displayed by the arrays spanned the visible spectrum while retaining angle-independent structural color. The color of centrifuged colloids of a single particle diameter was precisely controlled within 50 nm by modulating the particle concentration. The peak wavelength diffracted by the material was further tuned by altering the centrifugal rate and assembly time. Centrifugation assembly of particles in a polymer solution also produces noniridescent colloidal films, and the control of their color is reported. Together, these results offer design considerations for the centrifugation-based assembly of colloidal films with tunable structural color that are transferable after fabrication and are angle independent.

Different Structural Colors or Patterns on the Front and Back Sides of a Multilayer Photonic Structure

The application of photonic crystals in the field of color display and anticounterfeiting has been widely studied because of their brilliant and angle-dependent structural colors. Most of the research is focused on structural colors on the front side of photonic crystals, and both sides of the crystals usually display the same or similar optical properties. Here, multilayer photonic crystals with different structural colors or different patterns on the front and back sides were designed. In a trilayer photonic structure, an amorphous SiO₂ layer with a thickness of about 10 μm was inserted into two layers of highly ordered photonic crystals with band gaps of 625 and 470 nm. The amorphous SiO₂ layer acts as a gate to prohibit light transmission, and thereby, the structural colors of the two photonic crystals were separated. Hence, the trilayer structure shows red and blue colors on each side. Then, a light window was opened in the disordered layer using a patterned mask; thus, a pattern with a mixed color of both ordered layers was observed on each side in the window field, which was obviously different from the background color. Finally, completely different patterns on each side were also realized by building a multilayer structure. The different structural colors or patterns on each side of the photonic structures provide them with enriched color range and enhanced display or anticounterfeiting ability.

Ellipsoidal Artificial Melanin Particles as Building Blocks for Biomimetic Structural Coloration

Inspired by the structural coloration of anisotropic materials in nature, we demonstrate the preparation of structural color materials by the assembly of anisotropic particles. Spherical artificial melanin particles consisting of a polystyrene core and polydopamine shell were stretched asymmetrically to form uniform-sized ellipsoidal particles with different aspect ratios. The aspect ratio and assembly method of the ellipsoidal particles influence the structural coloration, indicating that the particle shape is one of the important parameters for controlling the structural coloration. The discovery of a method to control the structural color using ellipsoidal particles is useful in basic research on structural colors in nature and provides flexibility in material design and extends the application range of structural color materials.

Hairy Polydopamine Particles as Platforms for Photonic and Magnetic Materials

By selecting the core materials and grafted-hair polymers, hairy particles with polymer brushes can create various types of functional materials. In recent years, polydopamine (PDA) particles that are obtained by polymerizing dopamine, which is an amino acid derivative, have attracted attention for various applications. Herein, we present a novel approach for creating photonic and magnetic materials from hairy PDA particles. By grafting a hydrophilic hair polymer, we have succeeded in producing photonic materials capable of structural color changes. Furthermore, we have demonstrated the preparation of magnetic materials by immobilizing holmium, which is one of the lanthanide elements, by electrostatic interactions onto a cationic hair polymer. These results demonstrate the possibility of hairy PDA particles for a wide range of applications, such as for photonic and magnetic materials.

Melanin Precursor Influence on Structural Colors from Artificial Melanin Particles: PolyDOPA, Polydopamine, and Polynorepinephrine

Polydopamine (PDA) is of interest as a mimetic material of melanin to produce structural color materials. Herein, to investigate the influence of the material composition of the artificial melanin particles on structural color, we demonstrated the preparation of core-shell particles by polymerization of norepinephrine or 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine, which are melanin precursors similar to dopamine, in the presence of polystyrene particles. It was revealed that the arrays of the prepared particles produce high-visibility structural color because of absorption of scattering light. Although poly(3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) showed the same tendency as PDA which was previous studied, polynorepinephrine can easily produce a smooth and thick shell layer compared with that of PDA, and pellets consisting of the particles showed angle-dependent structural color. Therefore, the artificial melanin particles that produce angle-dependent structural color became stable than ever before. These results indicated that material compositions of artificial melanin particles have influence on structural color, and an important finding for application as a coloring material was obtained.

Bioinspired Photonic Pigments from Colloidal Self-Assembly

The natural world is a colorful environment. Stunning displays of coloration have evolved throughout nature to optimize camouflage, warning, and communication. The resulting flamboyant visual effects and remarkable dynamic properties, often caused by an intricate structural design at the nano- and microscale, continue to inspire scientists to unravel the underlying physics and to recreate the observed effects. Here, the methodologies to create bioinspired photonic pigments using colloidal self-assembly approaches are considered. The physics governing the interaction of light with structural features and natural examples of structural coloration are briefly introduced. It is then outlined how the self-assembly of colloidal particles, acting as wavelength-scale building blocks, can be particularly useful to replicate coloration from nature. Different coloration effects that result from the defined structure of the self-assembled colloids are introduced and it is highlighted how these optical properties can be translated into photonic pigments by modifications of the assembly processes. The importance of absorbing elements, as well as the role of surface chemistry and wettability to control structural coloration is discussed. Finally, approaches to integrate dynamic control of coloration into such self-assembled photonic pigments are outlined.

Photonic glass for high contrast structural color

Non-iridescent structural colors based on disordered arrangement of monodisperse spherical particles, also called photonic glass, show low color saturation due to gradual transition in the reflectivity spectrum. No significant improvement is usually expected from particles optimization, as Mie resonances are broad for small dielectric particles with moderate refractive index. Moreover, the short range order of a photonic glass alone is also insufficient to cause sharp spectral features. We show here, that the combination of a well-chosen particle geometry with the short range order of a photonic glass has strong synergetic effects. Using a first-order approximation and an Ewald sphere construction the reflectivity of such structures can be related to the Fourier transform of the permittivity distribution. The Fourier transform required for a highly saturated color can be achieved by tailoring the substructure of the motif. We show that this can be obtained by choosing core-shell particles with a non-monotonous refractive index distribution from the center of the particle through the shell and into the background material. The first-order theoretical predictions are confirmed by numerical simulations.

Bioinspired Stimuli-Responsive Color-Changing Systems

Stimuli-responsive colors are a unique characteristic of certain animals, evolved as either a method to hide from enemies and prey or to communicate their presence to rivals or mates. From a material science perspective, the solutions developed by Mother Nature to achieve these effects are a source of inspiration to scientists for decades. Here, an updated overview of the literature on bioinspired stimuli-responsive color-changing systems is provided. Starting from natural systems, which are the source of inspiration, a classification of the different solutions proposed is given, based on the stimuli used to trigger the color-changing effect.

Reusable Photocatalytic Optical Fibers for Underground, Deep-Sea, and Turbid Water Remediation

An approach for underground, deep, and turbid water remediation is presented based on optical fibers with a photocatalytic coating. Thus, photocatalytic TiO2 P25 nanoparticles immobilized in a poly(vinylidene difluoride) (PVDF) matrix are coated on polymeric optical fibers (POFs) and the photocatalytic performance of the system is assessed under artificial sunlight. To the best of our knowledge, poly(methyl methacrylate)-POF coated with TiO2/PVDF and the reusability of any type of POF for photocatalytic applications are not previously reported. The photocatalytic efficiency of the hybrid material in the degradation of ciprofloxacin (CIP) and its reusability are evaluated here. It is shown that 50 w/w% of TiO2 P25 achieves a degradation of 95% after 72 h under artificial sunlight and a reusability of three times leads to a loss of activity inferior to 11%. The efficient removal of ciprofloxacin and the stability of the POF coated with TiO2 P25 successfully demonstrate its suitability in the degradation of pollutants with potential application in regions with low light illumination, as in underground and deep water.

Polydopamine-Based 3D Colloidal Photonic Materials: Structural Color Balls and Fibers from Melanin-Like Particles with Polydopamine Shell Layers

Nature creates beautiful structural colors, and some of these colors are produced by nanostructural arrays of melanin. Polydopamine (PDA), an artificial black polymer produced by self-oxidative polymerization of dopamine, has attracted extensive attention because of its unique properties. PDA is a melanin-like material, and recent studies have reported that photonic materials based on PDA particles showed structural colors by enhancing color saturation through the absorption of scattered light. Herein, we describe the preparation of three-dimensional (3D) colloidal photonic materials, such as structural color balls and fibers, from biomimetic core-shell particles with melanin-like PDA shell layers. Structural color balls were prepared through the combined use of membrane emulsion and heating. We also demonstrated the use of microfluidic emulsification and solvent diffusion for the fabrication of structural color fibers. The obtained 3D colloidal materials, i.e., balls and fibers, exhibited angle-independent structural colors due to the amorphous assembly of PDA-containing particles. These findings provide new insight for the development of dye-free technology for the coloration of various 3D colloidal architectures.

Structurally colored coating films with tunable iridescence fabricated via cathodic electrophoretic deposition of silica particles

In recent years, colloidal arrays of submicrometer-sized monodisperse particles used as structurally colored coatings have drawn great attention due to their non-bleaching properties and low impact on human health and the environment. In this paper, structurally colored coating films were fabricated using monodisperse SiO₂ particles via the cathodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique. The addition of a strong polycation, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA), enables the cathodic EPD of SiO₂ particles and carbon black (CB) additives. Optimizing the quantities of PDDA and CB results in the appearance of vivid structural color from the coating films. The arrangement of the particle array is controllable by varying the pH of the water added to the coating sols for EPD. Structurally colored coating films with and without iridescence, i.e., angular dependence, can be fabricated on demand by a simple operation of the EPD process. In addition, the coating film prepared by cathodic EPD displayed high abrasion resistance because PDDA acts not only as a charge control agent but also as a binder.

Liquid-immune structural colors with angle-independence inspired from hollow melanosomes

In this work, hollow polydopamine (PDA) amorphous colloidal structures with liquid-immune and angle-independent structural colors have been successfully fabricated.
