Carboxymethyl cellulose/mesoporous magnetic graphene oxide as a safe and sustained ibuprofen delivery bio-system: Synthesis, characterization, and study of drug release kinetic

Cytotoxicity and Bioimmunological Activity of Poly(2-Isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) Conjugates with Ibuprofen Using 3D Reconstructed Tissue Models

Poly(2-isopropenyl-2-oxazoline) (PIPOx) represents a universal polymer platform with pendant 2-oxazoline groups, allowing the preparation of biomaterials for various biomedical applications. However, there is a lack of information on PIPOx concerning the effect of molar mass (Mn) on cytotoxicity and bioimmunological properties. Here, aqueous copper(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (Cu0-RDPR) was used for the preparation of PIPOx with defined Mn and low dispersity. PIPOx of different Mn are used for the synthesis of conjugates with ibuprofen (5 mol %), the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. The release of ibuprofen at 37 °C and different pH values is monitored using high-performance liquid chromatography, where the rate of drug release increases with increasing pH and lower Mn. In vitro cytotoxicity and bioimmunological properties of PIPOx and drug conjugates are studied using 3D reconstructed tissue models of the human epidermis and intestinal epithelium. We demonstrate low cytotoxicity of PIPOx and conjugates with different Mn values on both 3D tissue models.

Steric and energetic studies on the influence of cellulose on the adsorption effectiveness of Mg trapped hydroxyapatite for enhanced remediation of chlorpyrifos and omethoate pesticides

Magnesium-trapped hydroxyapatite (Mg.HP) was hybridized with cellulose fiber to produce a bio-composite (CLF/HP) with enhanced adsorption affinities for two types of toxic pesticides (chlorpyrifos (CF) and omethoate (OM)). The enhancement influence of the hybridized cellulose on the adsorption performances of Mg.HP was illustrated based on the determined steric and energetic factors. The computed CF and OM adsorption performances of CLF/HP during the saturation phases are 279.8 mg/g and 317.9 mg/g, respectively, which are significantly higher than the determined values using Mg/HP (143.4 mg/g (CF) and 145.3 mg/g (OM)). The steric analysis demonstrates a strong impact of the hybridization process on the reactivity of the surface of the composite. While CLF/HP reflects effective uptake site densities (Nm) of 93.3 mg/g (CF) and 135.3 mg/g (OM), the estimated values for Mg.HP are 51.2 mg/g (CF) and 46.11 mg/g (OM), which explain the reported enhancement in the adsorption performances of the composite. The capacity of each uptake site to be occupied with more than one molecule (n (CF) = 3-3.74 and n (OM) = 2.35-3.54) suggests multimolecular uptake. The energetic factors suggested physical mechanistic processes of spontaneous and exothermic behaviors either during the uptake of CF or OM.

Synthesis and characterization of Mg-hydroxyapatite and its cellulose hybridized structure as enhanced bio-carrier of oxaliplatin drug; equilibrium and release kinetics

An advanced form of magnesium-doped hydroxyapatite (Mg HAP) was synthesized and hybridized with cellulose fibers, producing a safe biocomposite (CF/Mg HAP) as an enhanced delivery structure of traditional oxaliplatin (OXPN) chemotherapy drug during the treatment stages of colorectal cancer. The qualifications of CF/Mg HAP as a carrier for OXPN were followed based on loading, release, and cytotoxicity as compared to Mg HAP. The CF/Mg HAP composite exhibits a notably higher OXPN encapsulation capacity (256.2 mg g-1) than the Mg HAP phase (148.9 mg g-1). The OXPN encapsulation process into CF/Mg HAP displays the isotherm behavior of the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.99) and the kinetic assumptions of pseudo-first-order kinetics (R2 > 0.95). The steric studies reflect a strong increment in the quantities of the free sites after the cellulose hybridization steps (Nm = 178.58 mg g-1) as compared to pure Mg HAP (Nm = 69.39 mg g-1). Also, the capacity of each site was enhanced to be loaded by 2 OXPN molecules (n = 1.43) in a vertical orientation. The OXPN encapsulation energy into CF/Mg HAP (<40 kJ mol-1) reflects physical encapsulation reactions involving van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding. The OXPN release profiles of CF/Mg HAP exhibit slow and controlled properties for about 100 h, either at pH 5.5 or pH 7.4. The release kinetics and diffusion exponent (>0.45) signify non-Fickian transport and a complex erosion/diffusion release mechanism. The free CF/Mg HAP particles display a considerable cytotoxic effect on the HCT-116 cancer cells (21.82% cell viability), and their OXPN-loaded product shows a strong cytotoxic effect (1.85% cell viability).

Cyclodextrin Host-Guest Recognition in Glucose-Monitoring Sensors

Diabetes mellitus is a prevalent chronic health condition that has caused millions of deaths worldwide. Monitoring blood glucose levels is crucial in diabetes management, aiding in clinical decision making and reducing the incidence of hypoglycemic episodes, thereby decreasing morbidity and mortality rates. Despite advancements in glucose monitoring (GM), the development of noninvasive, rapid, accurate, sensitive, selective, and stable systems for continuous monitoring remains a challenge. Addressing these challenges is critical to improving the clinical utility of GM technologies in diabetes management. In this concept, cyclodextrins (CDs) can be instrumental in the development of GM systems due to their high supramolecular recognition capabilities based on the host-guest interaction. The introduction of CDs into GM systems not only impacts the sensitivity, selectivity, and detection limit of the monitoring process but also improves biocompatibility and stability. These findings motivated the current review to provide a comprehensive summary of CD-based blood glucose sensors and their chemistry of glucose detection, efficiency, and accuracy. We categorize CD-based sensors into four groups based on their modification strategies, including CD-modified boronic acid, CD-modified mediators, CD-modified nanoparticles, and CD-modified functionalized polymers. These findings shed light on the potential of CD-based sensors as a promising tool for continuous GM in diabetes mellitus management.

Insight into the synergetic, steric and energetic properties of zeolitization and cellulose fiber functionalization of diatomite during the adsorption of Cd(ii): advanced equilibrium studies

The adsorption potentiality of zeolitized diatomite (ZD) frustules and their cellulose hybridized (C/ZD) product for Cd(ii) ions was assessed in synergetic studies to investigate the impact of the modification processes. The adsorption properties were illustrated based on the steric and energetic parameters of the applied advanced equilibrium modeling (monolayer model of one energy). The cellulose hybridization process increased the adsorption properties of Cd(ii) significantly to 229.4 mg g-1 as compared to ZD (180.8 mg g-1) and raw diatomite (DA) (127.8 mg g-1) during the saturation state. The steric investigation suggested a notable increase in the quantities of the active sites after the zeolitization (Nm = 62.37 mg g-1) and cellulose functionalization (Nm = 98.46 mg g-1), which illustrates enhancement in the Cd(ii) uptake capacity of C/ZD. Moreover, each active site of C/ZD can absorb about 4 ions of Cd(ii) ZD, which occur in a vertical orientation. The energetic studies, including Gaussian energy (<8 kJ mol-1) and retention energy (<8 kJ mol-1), demonstrate the physical uptake of Cd(ii), which might involve cooperating van der Waals forces (4-10 kJ mol-1), hydrophobic bonds (5 kJ mol-1), dipole forces (2-29 kJ mol-1), and hydrogen bonding (<30 kJ mol-1) in addition to zeolitic ion exchange mechanisms (0.6-25 kJ mol-1). The behaviors and values of entropy, internal energy, and free enthalpy as the assessed thermodynamic functions validate the exothermic and spontaneous properties of the Cd(ii) retention by ZD and the C/ZD composite.

Recent advances in cellulose, pectin, carrageenan and alginate-based oral drug delivery systems

Polymers-based drug delivery systems constitute one of the highly explored thrust areas in the field of the medicinal and pharmaceutical industries. In the past years, the properties of polymers have been modified in context to their solubility, release kinetics, targeted action site, absorption, and therapeutic efficacy. Despite the availability of diverse synthetic polymers for the bioavailability enhancement of drugs, the use of natural polymers is still highly recommended due to their easy availability, accessibility, and non-toxicity. The aim of the review is to provide the available literature of the last five years on oral drug delivery systems based on four natural polymers i.e., cellulose, pectin, carrageenan, and alginate in a concise and tabulated manner. In this review, most of the information is in tabulated form to provide easy accessibility to the reader. The data related to active pharmaceutical ingredients and supported components in different formulations of the mentioned polymers have been made available.

Characterization of cellulose-functionalized phillipsite biocomposite as an enhanced carrier of oxaliplatin drug during the treatment of colorectal cancer: loading, release, and cytotoxicity

Natural phillipsite (N.Ph) was hybridized with cellulose fibers to produce a safe biocomposite (CF/N.Ph) as an enhanced delivery structure of traditional oxaliplatin (OXPN) chemotherapy during the treatment stages of colorectal cancer cells. The requirements of CF/N.Ph as a carrier for OXPN were followed based on the loading, release, and cytotoxicity compared to N.Ph. CF/N.Ph composite exhibits a notably higher OXPN encapsulation capacity (311.03 mg g^-1) than the N.Ph phase (79.6 mg g^-1). The OXPN encapsulation processes into CF/N.Ph display the isotherm behavior of the Freundlich model (R² = 0.99) and the kinetic assumptions of pseudo-first order kinetic (R² > 0.95). The steric studies reflect a strong increment in the quantities of the free sites after the cellulose hybridization steps (Nm = 100.01 mg g^-1) compared to pure N.Ph (Nm = 27.94 mg g^-1). Additionally, the capacity of each site was enhanced to be loaded by 4 OXPN molecules (n = 3.11) compared to 3 by N.Ph (n = 2.85) in a vertical orientation. The OXPN encapsulation energy into CF/N.Ph (<40 kJ mol^-1) reflects physical encapsulation reactions involving electrostatic attraction, van der Waals forces, and hydrogen bonding. The OXPN release profiles of CF/N.Ph exhibit slow and controlled properties for about 150 h either at pH 5.5 or at pH 7.4. The release kinetics and diffusion exponent (>0.45) signify non-Fickian transport and a complex erosion/diffusion release mechanism. The free CF/N.Ph particles display a considerable cytotoxic effect on HCT-116 cancer cells (46.91% cell viability), and its OXPN-loaded product shows a strong cytotoxic effect (3.14% cell viability).

Green and facile synthesis of lignin/HKUST-1 as a novel hybrid biopolymer metal-organic-framework for a pH-controlled drug release system

This manuscript describes the synthesis and characterization of a hybrid polymer/HKUST-1 composite for oral drug delivery. A green, one-pot approach was employed to synthesize the modified metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composite using alkali lignin as a novel pH-responsive biopolymer carrier for the simulated oral delivery system. Several analytical techniques, including Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to analyze the chemical and crystalline structure of HKUST-1 and L/HKUST-1 composite. The drug loading capacity and drug-controlled release behavior of HKUST-1 and L/HKUST-1 were examined using ibuprofen (IBU) as an oral drug model. L/HKUST-1 composite demonstrated a pH-controlled drug release behavior by advancing the drug stability at low pHs such as the gastric medium and controlling drug release in the pH range of 6.8-7.4, similar to intestinal pH. The results suggest that the L/HKUST-1 composite is a promising candidate for oral medication delivery.

Carboxymethyl cellulose@multi wall carbon nanotubes functionalized with Ugi reaction as a new curcumin carrier

In recent years, the fabrication of new drug delivery systems (DDSs) based on functionalization by multi-component reactions (MCRs) has received special attention. In this regard, to obtain a new oral administration system for colon-specific cancer treatment, the CMC@MWCNTs@FCA carrier was designed and prepared from the functionalization of the CMC@MWCNTs as a biocompatible raw material with carboxamide group by the Ugi reaction. FT-IR analysis confirmed the successful synthesis of the product through the change in the functional groups of reagents. Additionally, the crystalline structure and porosity of the samples were studied by XRD and BET techniques. After a detailed characterization, the curcumin (CUR) was loaded on CMC@MWCNTs and CMC@MWCNTs@FCA, respectively, about 29 % and 38 %. In vitro drug release behavior studies for CUR-loaded CMC@MWCNTs@FCA showed the controlled release for it, so 11.6 % and 76.5 % of CUR, respectively were released at pH 1.2 and pH 7.4. Toxicological analysis displayed the IC₅₀ of CMC@MWCNTs@FCA@CUR is 752 μg/mL. In conclusion, the obtained findings display that the fabricated system can be proposed as a biocompatible carrier for specific colon cancer treatment.

Development of the new pH-driven carrier from alginate/carboxymethyl starch bio-coated co-drugs@COF-OH for controlled and concomitant colon cancer treatment

To develop a new more efficient colon cancer treatment bio-vehicle, in frontier research, for the first time, an attempt has been made to design a unique colon-targeted bio-carrier containing polysaccharides along with nanoporous materials. So, at first, an imine-based covalent organic framework (COF-OH) with respectively an average pore diameter and surface area at 8.5058 nm and 208.29 m²·g^-1 was fabricated. In the next step, about 41.68 % and 95.8 % of 5-fluorouracil (5-Fu) and curcumin (CUR) respectively were loaded on COF-OH, and 5-Fu + CUR@COF-OH was achieved. Due to the higher rate of drug releases in simulated stomach media, 5-Fu + CUR@COF-OH was coated with a mixture of alginate (Alg) and carboxymethyl starch (CMS) via the ionic crosslinking (Alg/CMS@(5-Fu + CUR@COF-OH)). Findings displayed that the use of polysaccharide coat reduce the drug releases in simulated gastric and improved it in simulated intestinal and colonic fluids. The beads swelled about 93.33 % under simulated gastrointestinal conditions, but this value was found higher in the simulated colonic environment and reached 326.67 %. The hemolysis rate lower than 5 %, as well as the cell viability higher than 80 %, were the main showing signs of system biocompatibility. Altogether, the results of the preliminary investigations can highlight the potential of the Alg/CMS@(5-Fu + CUR@COF-OH) for colon-specific drug delivery.

Synthesis and characterization of cellulose functionalized zeolitic diatomite as an enhanced carrier of oxaliplatin drug; loading, release, and cytotoxicity

Natural diatomite frustules (D) were incorporated in zeolitization and cellulose functionalization processes to obtain zeolitized diatomite (ZD) and cellulose fibrous/zeolitized diatomite composite (CF/ZD). The modified products were assessed as potential carriers of oxaliplatin drug (OXPL) with enhanced properties. The prepared ZD (112.5 mg/g) and CF/ZD (268.3 mg/g) structures exhibit significantly enhanced encapsulation capacities as compared to raw diatomite (65.9 mg/g). The occurred encapsulation reactions follow the classic Pseudo-first order kinetic (R² > 0.93) and traditional Langmuir isotherm (R² = 0.99). The estimated effective encapsulation site density of CF/ZD is 104.8 mg/g which is a notably higher value than ZD (44.6 mg/g) and D (28.4 mg/g). Moreover, each effective site can be occupied with up to 3 molecules of OXPL molecules in vertical forms involving multi-molecular mechanisms. The encapsulation energy (<40 KJ/mol) suggested the predominant effects of the physical mechanisms during the encapsulation reactions. The release profiles of ZD as well as CF/ZD exhibit slow and controlled properties for about 100 h either at pH 5.5 or at pH 7.4. The release kinetic studies involving the obtained diffusion exponent values (>0.45) suggested non-Fickian transport and complex erosion/diffusion release mechanism. These structures exhibit enhanced cytotoxic effects on the HCT-116 cancer cell lines (D (18.78 % cell viability), ZD (9.76 % cell viability), and CF/ZD (3.16 % cell viability).

An application of CoFe2O4/alginate magnetic beads: drug delivery system of 5-fluorouracil

Magnetic hyperthermia therapy is expected to play an important role in the treatment of more and more cancers. The synergistic effects of using together hyperthermia and cancer drugs have been shown by literature studies to be more effective than either hyperthermia treatment alone or chemotherapy alone. In addition, magnetic materials that can be used as a contrast agent enable magnetic resonance imaging of the tumor, which is also useful in seeing the treatment progress. This study, which was designed for this purpose, occurred in three parts: In the first part, magnetic CoFe2O4/alginate composite beads were prepared and characterized with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). In the second part, the swelling behaviour of magnetic composite beads was investigated at pH 1.2, pH 7.4 and pH 6.8. It was seen that at pH 7.4 and pH 6.8, that is, near neutral pH, CFA swelled by 81.54% and 82.69%, respectively. In the third part, 5-Fluorouracil was encapsulated at the different ratios in CoFe2O4/alginate composite beads, and release experiments were performed at pH 1.2, pH 7.4 and pH 6.8. 5-FU release was calculated with Korsmeyer-Peppas, Higuchi, first-order, and zero-order models. It was seen that the drug release systems prepared were suitable for all kinetic models. Magnetic CoFe2O4/alginate composite bead, which is the drug carrier, was determined to be suitable for controlled release for 5-Fluorouracil.

Highly efficient microencapsulation of phytonutrients by fractioned cellulose using biopolymer complexation technology

A poorly water soluble polar and non-polar bioactive complexes encapsulated in a nanocellulose-based polymeric network are the focus of this research. Ascorbic acid, resveratrol, holy basil extract, pomegranate extract, and niacin are all microencapsulated bioactive complexes that make up Zetalife^®, a nutritional ingredient. It uses an interpenetrating polymeric network (IPN) with more dispersed nanocellulose and phospholipids to increase Zetalife^® s bioavailability. Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopic (FESEM) images were used in studying the morphology of encapsulated bioactive molecules. The average microbead size was determined to be 244.2 nm. After each month of storage, the sample's microbial content was measured to assess stability. In vitro release followed a first-order kinetic model with high R².

Multi-Responsive Optimization of Novel pH-Sensitive Hydrogel Beads Based on Basil Seed Mucilage, Alginate, and Magnetic Particles

Conventional drug delivery systems often cause side effects and gastric degradation. Novel drug delivery systems must be developed to decrease side effects and increase the efficacy of drug delivery. This research aimed to fabricate hydrogel beads for use as a drug delivery system based on basil seed mucilage (BSM), sodium alginate (SA), and magnetic particles (MPs). The Taguchi method and Grey relational analysis were used for the design and optimization of the hydrogel beads. Three factors, including BSM, SA, and MPs at four levels were designed by L-16 orthogonal arrays. BSM was the main factor influencing bead swelling, drug release rate at pH 7.4, and release of antioxidants at pH 1.2 and 7.4. In addition, SA and MPs mainly affected drug loading and drug release rate in acidic medium, respectively. Grey relational analysis indicated that the composition providing optimal overall properties was 0.2 vol% BSM, 0.8 vol% SA, and 2.25 vol% MPs. Based on the findings of this work, BSM/SA/MPs hydrogel beads have the potential to be used as a pH-sensitive alternative material for drug delivery in colon-specific systems.

Sulfonated magnetic sugarcane bagasse as an efficient natural polymer-based catalyst for the synthesis of nitrogen-containing heterocyclic rings in water

A new species of catalysts that are prepared from biocompatible materials is demonstrated. Sulfonated magnetic sugarcane bagasse has been synthesized as a novel biodegradable and robust heterogeneous catalyst for organic transformations. The catalyst was characterized by different techniques. Next, the efficiency of this acid catalyst was examined with multi-component reactions for the synthesis of some biologically active scaffolds of heterocyclic organic compounds such 2,3-dihydroquinazolin-4(1H)-ones and pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-one derivatives. A wide range of these heterocycles was synthesized with excellent yields in short reaction times under green conditions. In all cases, sulfonated magnetic sugarcane bagasse could be simply collected using an external magnet and reused for several runs without any significant loss of catalytic activity.

Preparation and Hydrogelling Performances of a New Drilling Fluid Filtrate Reducer from Plant Press Slag

Plant press slag (PPS) containing abundant cellulose and starch is a byproduct in the deep processing of fruits, cereals, and tuberous crops products. PPS can be modified by using caustic soda and chloroacetic acid to obtain an inexpensive and environmentally friendly filtrate reducer of drilling fluids. The optimum mass ratio of m_NaOH:m_MCA:m_PPS is 1:1:2, the optimum etherification temperature is 75 °C, and the obtained product is a natural mixture of carboxymethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl starch (CMCS). PPS and CMCS are characterized by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The filtration loss performance of CMCS is stable before and after hot-rolling aging at 120 °C in 4.00% NaCl and saturated NaCl brine base slurry. The minimum filtration loss value of CMCS is 5.28 mL/30 min at the dosage of 1.50%. Compared with the commercial filtrate reducers with a single component, i.e., carboxymethyl starch (CMS) and low viscosity sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (LV-CMC), CMCS have a better tolerance to high temperature of 120 °C and high concentration of NaCl. The filtration loss performance of low-cost CMCS can reach the standards of LV-CMC and CMS of the specification of water-based drilling fluid materials in petroleum industry.

Folic acid-modified photoluminescent dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose crosslinked bionanogels for pH-controlled and tumor-targeted co-drug delivery

This work aimed to fabricate a new photoluminescent bionanogel with both targeted anticancer drug delivery and bioimaging potentials. Briefly, at first photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) were synthesized from the low-cost and more available black pepper with traditional medicinal properties. The as-synthesized dialdehyde carboxymethyl cellulose (DCMC) was used as a safe crosslinker for gelatin crosslinking in the presence of CDs (CDs/DCMC-Gel). Eventually, the residual amine functional groups of gelatin were used for the conjugation of CDs/DCMC-Gel with folic acid (FA) ((CDs/DCMC-Gel)-FA bionanogels). All employed physicochemical characterization methods approved the (CDs/DCMC-Gel)-FA bionanogels fabrication route. SEM analysis specified the spherical morphology with a diameter of ~70-90 nm for it. Curcumin (CUR) and doxorubicin (DOX) respectively were loaded with drug entrapment efficiency of about 44.0% and 41.4%. The release rate for both drugs in acidic conditions was higher than in physiological conditions. In vitro antitumor experiments; MTT, DAPI staining, cellular uptake, and cell cycle tests showed the superior anticancer effect of the CUR@DOX@(CDs/DCMC-Gel)-FA in comparison with free CUR@DOX. Moreover, the (CDs/DCMC-Gel)-FA acted as a hopeful bio-imaging tool. Taken together, the designed (CDs/DCMC-Gel)-FA could be proposed as a promising nanosystem for efficient chemotherapy.

γ-Cyclodextrin-based polypseudorotaxane hydrogels for ophthalmic delivery of flurbiprofen to treat anterior uveitis

Anterior uveitis is a sight-threatening inflammation inside the eyes. Conventional eye drops for anti-inflammatory therapy need to be administered frequently owing to the rapid elimination and corneal barrier. To address these issues, polypseudorotaxane hydrogels were developed by mixing Soluplus micelles (99.4 nm) and cyclodextrins solution. The optimized hydrogels exhibited shear-thinning and sustained release properties. The hydrogels exhibited higher transcorneal permeability coefficient (P_app, 1.84 folds) than that of drug solutions. Moreover, animal study indicated that the hydrogels significantly increased the precorneal retention (AUC, 21.2 folds) and intraocular bioavailability of flurbiprofen (AUC_{Aqueous humor}, 17.8 folds) in comparison with drug solutions. Importantly, the hydrogels obviously boosted anti-inflammatory efficacy in rabbit model of endotoxin-induced uveitis at a reduced administration frequency. Additionally, the safety of hydrogels was confirmed by cytotoxicity and ocular irritation studies. In all, the present study demonstrates a friendly non-invasive strategy based on γ-CD-based polypseudorotaxane hydrogels for ocular drug delivery.

Drug delivery systems of CoFe2O4/chitosan and MnFe2O4/chitosan magnetic composites

The study consists of three parts. In the first part, synthesis and characterization of core-shell magnetic composite beads based on chitosan and containing two different magnetic nanoparticles were carried out. The beads were formed from CoFe₂O₄/chitosan and MnFe₂O₄/chitosan. TGA and SEM were used for the characterization of core-shell materials. In the second part, swelling experiments of magnetic beads were performed. In the third part, 5-Fluorouracil was encapsulated at different rates in two different magnetic materials, release experiments were carried out at pH 7.4, pH 6.8, and pH 1.2, and the model of drug release was determined. Korsmeyer-Peppas, Higuchi, first-order, and zero-order models were used for mathematical modeling. Both prepared systems were found to be suitable for controlled release for 5-Fluorouracil.

Application or function of citric acid in drug delivery platforms

Nontoxic materials with natural origin are promising materials in the designing and preparation of the new drug delivery systems (DDSs). Today's, citric acid (CA) has attracted a great deal of attention because of its special features; green nature, biocompatibility, low price, biodegradability, and commercially available property. So, CA has been employed in the preparation of the various platforms to induce a suitable property on their structure. Recently, several research groups investigated the CA-based platforms in different forms like tablets, dendrimers, hyperbranched polymers, (co)polymer, hydrogels, and nanoparticles as efficient DDSs. By considering an increasing amount of published articles in this field, for the first time, in this review, an overview of the published works regarding CA applications in the design of various DDSs is presented with a detailed and insightful discussion.

Spherical Cellulose Micro and Nanoparticles: A Review of Recent Developments and Applications

Cellulose, the most abundant natural polymer, is a versatile polysaccharide that is being exploited to manufacture innovative blends, composites, and hybrid materials in the form of membranes, films, coatings, hydrogels, and foams, as well as particles at the micro and nano scales. The application fields of cellulose micro and nanoparticles run the gamut from medicine, biology, and environment to electronics and energy. In fact, the number of studies dealing with sphere-shaped micro and nanoparticles based exclusively on cellulose (or its derivatives) or cellulose in combination with other molecules and macromolecules has been steadily increasing in the last five years. Hence, there is a clear need for an up-to-date narrative that gathers the latest advances on this research topic. So, the aim of this review is to portray some of the most recent and relevant developments on the use of cellulose to produce spherical micro- and nano-sized particles. An attempt was made to illustrate the present state of affairs in terms of the go-to strategies (e.g., emulsification processes, nanoprecipitation, microfluidics, and other assembly approaches) for the generation of sphere-shaped particles of cellulose and derivatives thereof. A concise description of the application fields of these cellulose-based spherical micro and nanoparticles is also presented.

Carboxymethyl cellulose/tetracycline@UiO-66 nanocomposite hydrogel films as a potential antibacterial wound dressing

Designing an antibacterial agent with a suitable water vapor permeability, good mechanical properties, and controlled antibiotic release is a promising method for stopping bacterial infection in wound tissue. In this respect, this work aims to prepare novel flexible polymeric hydrogel films via integrating UiO-66 into the polymeric carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) hydrogel for improving the mechanical and antibiotic release performances. First, we performed a green hydrothermal synthetic method to synthesis UiO-66 and followed by encapsulating Tetracycline (TC) through immersion in its aqueous solution. Also, the casting technique was utilized to integrate different concentrations of the TC-encapsulated UiO-66 (TC@UiO-66, 5% to 15%) in the polymeric CMC matrix (CMC/TC@UiO-66) cross-linked by citric acid and plasticized by glycerol. The release performance showed a low initial burst release with a controlled release over 72 h in the artificial sweat and simulated wound exudate (PBS, pH 7.4) media. The in vitro cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity results revealed a good cytocompatibility toward Human skin fibroblast (HFF-1) cells and a significant activity against both E. coli and S. aureus with 1.3 and 1.7 cm inhibition zone, respectively. The obtained results recommend CMC/TC@UiO-66 films as a potential antibacterial wound dressing.

Transcutaneous Drug Delivery Systems Based on Collagen/Polyurethane Composites Reinforced with Cellulose

Designing composites based on natural polymers has attracted attention for more than a decade due to the possibility to manufacture medical devices which are biocompatible with the human body. Herein, we present some biomaterials made up of collagen, polyurethane, and cellulose doped with lignin and lignin-metal complex, which served as transcutaneous drug delivery systems. Compared with base material, the compressive strength and the elastic modulus of biocomposites comprising lignin or lignin-metal complex were significantly enhanced; thus, the compressive strength increased from 61.37 to 186.5 kPa, while the elastic modulus increased from 0.828 to 1.928 MPa. The release of ketokonazole from the polymer matrix follows a Korsmeyer–Peppas type kinetics with a Fickian diffusion. All materials tested were shown to be active against pathogenic microorganisms. The mucoadhesiveness, bioadhesiveness, mechanical resistance, release kinetic, and antimicrobial activity make these biocomposites to be candidates as potential systems for controlled drug release.

Advances in Drug Delivery Nanosystems Using Graphene-Based Materials and Carbon Nanotubes

Carbon is one of the most abundant elements on Earth. In addition to the well-known crystallographic modifications such as graphite and diamond, other allotropic carbon modifications such as graphene-based nanomaterials and carbon nanotubes have recently come to the fore. These carbon nanomaterials can be designed to help deliver or target drugs more efficiently and to innovate therapeutic approaches, especially for cancer treatment, but also for the development of new diagnostic agents for malignancies and are expected to help combine molecular imaging for diagnosis with therapies. This paper summarizes the latest designed drug delivery nanosystems based on graphene, graphene quantum dots, graphene oxide, reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotubes, mainly for anticancer therapy.

A Review on Recent Advancements of Graphene and Graphene-Related Materials in Biological Applications

Graphene is the most outstanding material among the new nanostructured carbonaceous species discovered and produced. Graphene’s astonishing properties (i.e., electronic conductivity, mechanical robustness, large surface area) have led to a deep change in the material science field. In this review, after a brief overview of the main characteristics of graphene and related materials, we present an extensive overview of the most recent achievements in biological uses of graphene and related materials.

A photoluminescent folic acid-derived carbon dot functionalized magnetic dendrimer as a pH-responsive carrier for targeted doxorubicin delivery

A fluorescent folic acid carbon dot-grafted magnetic dendrimer was synthesized as a potential carrier for targeted delivery of DOX drug in an acidic medium (pH 5). The carrier showed biodegradability, high colloidal stability, and good biocompatibility towards A549 cells.

Promoting the decontamination of different types of water pollutants (Cd2+, safranin dye, and phosphate) using a novel structure of exfoliated bentonite admixed with cellulose nanofiber

Exfoliated bentonite sheets admixed with nano-cellulose fibers (EXB/CF) were prepared as advanced bio-composite of enhanced decontamination properties for different species of water pollutants (Cd²⁺, safranin dye, and phosphate). The composite achieved promising adsorption capacities with experimental values of 206.8 mg/g (Cd²⁺), 336 mg/g (safranin), and 296 mg/g (phosphate); and predicted maximum capacities of 212.9 mg/g (Cd²⁺), 341 mg/g (safranin), and 305 mg/g (phosphate). The adsorption systems for the three species follow the Freundlich isotherm model and Pseudo-First order as kinetic model considering both the linear and nonlinear fitting demonstrating heterogeneous and multilayer uptake properties of physisorption type. The operation of physisorption mechanisms was supported by the obtained adsorption energies from D-R model that are less than 8 kJ/mol as well as the calculated free energies and enthalpies. The thermodynamic investigation revealed the nature of the adsorption reactions of the three pollutants by EXB/CF as exothermic, favorable, and spontaneous reactions. The EXB/CF composite also is of significant recyclability value and applied in five decontamination reusing runs for Cd²⁺, safranin dye, and phosphate achieving promising removal percentages.

Insight into the Loading and Release Properties of an Exfoliated Kaolinite/Cellulose Fiber (EXK/CF) Composite as a Carrier for Oxaliplatin Drug: Cytotoxicity and Release Kinetics

Kaolinite layers were exfoliated as single sheets and admixed with cellulose fibers, forming an advanced exfoliated kaolinite/cellulose fiber (EXK/CF) composite, which was characterized as a promising carrier for the oxaliplatin (OL) drug to induce safety as well as the therapeutic effect. The EXK/CF composite exhibited promising loading capacity and achieved an experimental value of 670 mg/g and an expected theoretical value of 704.4 mg/g. The loading behavior of OL using the EXK/CF composite followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model and the Langmuir equilibrium model, achieving an adsorption energy of 7.7 kJ/mol. This suggested physisorption and homogeneous loading behavior of the OL molecules in a monolayer form. The release profile of OL from EXK/CF continued for about 100 h with maximum release percentages of 86.4 and 95.2% in the phosphate and acetate buffers, respectively. The determined diffusion exponent from the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model suggested non-Fickian transport behavior of the OL molecules and releasing behavior controlled by erosion as well as diffusion mechanisms. Regarding the cytotoxic effect, the EXK/CF composite has a high safety impact on the normal colorectal cells (CCD-18Co) and higher toxic impacts on the colorectal cancer cell (HCT116) than the free oxaliplatin drug.
