Abstract
The present study used the DFT method to investigate aspirin's intermolecular interactions with boron nitride (BN) nanotubes modified with aluminum, gallium, and zinc. Our experiments obtained adsorption energy of -40.4 kJ/mol for aspirin on BN nanotubes. By doping each of the above metals on the surface of the BN nanotube, the aspirin adsorption energy increased dramatically. For BN nanotubes doped with Al, Ga, and Zn, this energy was -255, -251, and -250 kJ/mol. Thermodynamic analyses proved that all surface adsorptions are exothermic and spontaneous. Nanotubes' electronic structures and dipole moments have been examined following aspirin adsorption. In addition, AIM analysis has been performed for all systems in order to understand how the links were formed. According to the obtained results, BN nanotubes doped with metals, as mentioned previously, have a very high electron sensitivity to aspirin. These nanotubes can therefore be used to manufacture aspirin-sensitive electrochemical sensors.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
A carbon material with both open macrochannel arrays and abundant micro/mesopores was prepared, characterized, and applied for removing chloramphenicol (CAP) from water. In the preparation process, Carex meyeriana Kunth (CM) with natural channel arrays was used as the precursor for producing the biochar, and NaOH was used for removing silicon and formatting micro- and mesopores of the porous carbon. The product (PCCM) exhibited the highest specific surface area (2700.24 m2 g-1) among the reported CM-derived porous carbons. The adsorption performances of PCCM were evaluated through batch adsorption experiments. The maximum adsorption capacity of PCCM toward CAP was 1659.43 mg g-1. The adsorption mechanism was investigated with the aid of theoretical calculations. Moreover, PCCM exhibited better performance than other porous carbon adsorbents in fixed-bed experiments, which may be due to its structural advantages.

Abstract
1,4-naftoquinone (NQ) molecules have been extensively evaluated as potent antibacterial compounds; however, their use is limited, since they have low water solubility and exhibit toxicities in healthy eukaryotic cells. A possible path to overcoming these challenges is the use of particulate vehicles, such as SBA-15, which is a biocompatible and biodegradable mesoporous silica material, that may enhance drug delivery and decrease dosages. In this work, an isotherm model-based adsorption of three NQs into SBA-15 microparticles was evaluated. Interactions between NQs and SBA-15 microparticles were modeled at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory to understand the nature of such interactions. The results demonstrated that the adsorption of NQ, 2NQ, and 5NQ into SBA-15 fit the Freundlich adsorption model. According to theorical studies, physisorption is mediated by hydrogen bonds, while the most stable interactions occur between the carbonyl group of NQ and silica surfaces. Both experimental and theoretical results contribute to a deeper understanding of the use of SBA-15 or similar particles as nanovehicles in such a way that NQs can be modified in carbonyl or C3 to enhance adsorptions. The theoretical and experimental results were in accordance and contribute to a deeper understanding of how interactions between NQ-type molecules and SiO2 materials occur.

Abstract
Quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs) have been widely used in the food industry, environmental monitoring, and biomedicine. Here, a molecularly imprinted QCM sensor was prepared and used for formaldehyde detection. Using polyvinyl chloride as the embedding material and tetrahydrofuran as the solvent, a QCM electrode was modified with HCHO molecularly imprinted polymers (HCHO-MIPs). The detection conditions of the sensor were optimized, and its selectivity was investigated. The theoretical calculation results revealed that the acrylamide and pentaerythritol triacrylate were potential candidate functional monomer and cross-linking agent, respectively, in the preparation of HCHO-MIPs with high adsorbability, superselectivity, and stability. According to the calculated results, a sensor had been prepared. When the pH was 7, the added mass of the HCHO-MIPs (or NIPs) was 20 mg, and the amount of PVC coating was 20 μL, the sensor exhibited good adsorption, selectivity, repeatability, high sensitivity, high accuracy, and a short response time. The lowest detection limit was 10.72 ng mL-1. The sensor exhibited higher selectivity for HCHO than for propionaldehyde and benzaldehyde. The HCHO contents in fresh shrimp samples were detected using the sensor for four cycles, and the detection rates were in the range of 97.56-98.60%. This study provided a theoretical and experimental basis for the rapid detection of HCHO.

Abstract
The synthesis and crystal structures of three heteroleptic complexes of Zn(II) and Cd(II) with pyridine ligands (ethyl nicotinate (EtNic), N,N-diethylnicotinamide (DiEtNA), and 2-amino-5-picoline (2Ampic) are presented. The complex [Zn(EtNic)2Cl2] (1) showed a distorted tetrahedral coordination geometry with two EtNic ligand units and two chloride ions as monodentate ligands. Complexes [Zn(DiEtNA)(H2O)4(SO4)]·H2O (2) and [Cd(OAc)2(2Ampic)2] (3) had hexa-coordinated Zn(II) and Cd(II) centers. In the former, the Zn(II) was coordinated with three different monodentate ligands, which were DiEtNA, H2O, and SO42−. In 3, the Cd(II) ion was coordinated with two bidentate acetate ions and two monodentate 2Ampic ligand units. The supramolecular structures of the three complexes were elucidated using Hirshfeld analysis. In 1, the most important interactions that governed the molecular packing were O···H (15.5–15.6%), Cl···H (13.6–13.8%), Cl···C (6.3%), and C···H (10.3–10.6%) contacts. For complexes 2 and 3, the H···H, O···H, and C···H contacts dominated. Their percentages were 50.2%, 41.2%, and 7.1%, respectively, for 2 and 57.1%, 19.6%, and 15.2%, respectively, for 3. Only in complex 3, weak π-π stacking interactions between the stacked pyridines were found. The Zn(II) natural charges were calculated using the DFT method to be 0.8775, 1.0559, and 1.2193 for complexes 1–3, respectively. A predominant closed-shell character for the Zn–Cl, Zn–N, Zn–O, Cd–O, and Cd–N bonds was also concluded from an atoms in molecules (AIM) study.

Abstract
Nanoparticles in biological systems such as the bloodstream are exposed to a complex solution of biomolecules. A "corona" monolayer of proteins has historically been thought to form on nanoparticles upon introduction into such environments. To examine the first steps of protein binding, Fluorescence Correlation/Cross Correlation Spectroscopy and Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer were used to directly analyze four different nanoparticle systems. CdSe/ZnS core/shell quantum dots, 100 nm diameter polystyrene fluospheres, 200 nm diameter polystyrene fluospheres, and 200 nm diameter PEG-grafted DOTAP liposomes were studied with respect to serum protein binding, using bovine serum albumin as a model. Surface heterogeneity is found to be a key factor in protein binding to these nanoparticles, and as such we present a novel conceptualization of the early hard corona as low-ratio, non-uniform binding rather than a uniform monolayer.

Abstract
In this study, the morphology and sorption behavior of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics during the aging process are investigated. To clarify the sorption mechanism of aged PET microplastics, the common sunblock 4-methylbenzylidene camphor (4-MBC) was chosen as the target contaminant, and UV irradiation was used for the laboratory aging simulation. The results show that oxygen-containing functional groups (carboxylic, carbonyl, ketone and hydroxyl groups) increase on the surface of aged PET microplastics. Based on density functional theory (DFT) simulations, the camphor part of 4-MBC acts as a hydrogen bond acceptor, whereas the carboxylic group on aged PET microplastics acts as a hydrogen bond donor. The formation of hydrogen bonding causes increased sorption of 4-MBC on aged PET microplastics. The sorption capacity increased from 5 to 11 μg g-1 for 50 ppb 4-MBC with 100 mg PET microplastics after a five-day aging process. Other environmental factors that affect sorption were also identified; a higher pH value and the presence of salinity reduced the amount of sorption. The sorption of virgin PET ranged from 8.0 to 3.4 μg g-1 and the sorption of aged PET ranged from 22 to 5 μg g-1 at pH 4 to 10. In the presence of salinity (10% seawater), the virgin PET sorption dropped to 2.1 μg g-1 while the aged PET sorption dropped to 4 μg g-1. A similar phenomenon was also observed in the sorption behavior under natural sunlight (the sorption of PET increased from 0.4 to 0.8 μg g-1 after 6 months of aging). The potential risk to ecosystems of aged PET microplastics under prolonged sunlight exposure in the natural environment could be greater than that predicted for virgin microplastics.

Rational Design and Experimental Research on the Self-Assembled System of Thermosensitive Molecularly Imprinted Polymers Formed by α-Lipoic Acid and N-Vinyl Caprolactam. INT J POLYM SCI 2021. Abstract
In this paper, the main work was to study the theoretical self-assembly process of thermosensitive molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) for α-lipoic acid and to investigate thermosensitive functional monomers through density functional theory calculations (DFT) and intermolecular weak interaction analysis. The M06-2X/6-311+G (d, p) level was used to study the structural parameters, bonding sites, natural population analysis, binding energies (
), atom in molecules (AIM), independent gradient model (IGM), and imprinted molar ratio. The results revealed that α-lipoic acid mainly interacted with N-vinyl caprolactam (NVCL) by weak hydrogen bonds, and the best conditions for MIP synthesis were an optimum molar ratio of 1 : 4 (α-lipoic acid/NVCL). The thermosensitive properties showed that the highest adsorption was at 40°C and the lowest adsorption was at 20°C; also, the MIPs released the intercepted α-lipoic acid inside polymers, and the lower critical solution temperatures (LCST) of MIPs and nonimprinted polymers (NIPs) are 25.7°C and 19.4°C, respectively. In this study, the thermosensitive MIPs displayed a different adsorption capacity towards NVCL, which could be applied for controlled separation and release of α-lipoic acid in different temperatures in a complex matrix.

Abstract
In this work applicability of proton donor group stretching vibration force constants ks and intermolecular stretching force constants kσ for evaluations of hydrogen bond strength and geometry are discussed. For a set of 30 complexes with F···HF hydrogen bonds in a wide range 0.5-48 kcal/mol by means of quantum chemical calculations equilibrium geometries, complexation energies, vibrational frequencies and corresponding force constants were calculated (MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ). It is shown, that properties of a hydrogen bond are more strictly correlated with the values of force constants than with vibrational frequencies. Easy-to-use equations for estimations of hydrogen bond energy ∆E and geometry (rFH, rFF) based on ks and kσ values are proposed.

Abstract
Employing theoretical calculations with density functional theory (DFT) using the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) functional and basis set, the interaction of the aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) molecule and the functional groups present in the Pyracantha koidzumii biosorbent was investigated. Dissociation free energy and acidity equilibrium constant values were obtained theoretically both in solution (water) and gas phases. Additionally, the molecular electrostatic potential for the protonated molecules was calculated to verify the reactivity. Thus, methanol (hydroxyl group), methylammonium ion (amino group), acetate ion (carboxyl group), and acetone (carbonyl group), were used as representatives of the substrates present in the biomass; these references were considered using the corresponding protonated or unprotonated forms at a pH value of 5. The experimental infrared spectrophotometric data suggested the participation of these functional groups in the AFB1 biosorption process, indicating that the mechanism was dominated by electrostatic interactions between the charged functional groups and the positively charged AFB1 molecule. The theoretical determination indicated that the carboxylate ion provided the highest interaction energy with the AFB1 molecule. Consequently, an enriched biosorbent with compounds containing carboxyl groups could improve the yield of the AFB1 adsorption when using in vitro and in vivo trials.

Abstract
The conception of this theoretical research was idealized aiming to unveil the intermolecular structures of complexes formed by acetylene or ethylene and hydrofluoric acid. At light of computational calculations by using the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) method, the geometries of the C2H2⋯(HF), C2H2⋯2(HF), C2H2⋯4(HF), C2H4⋯(HF), C2H4⋯2(HF) and C2H4⋯4(HF) hydrogen-bonded complexes were fully optimized. Moreover, the Post-Hartree-Fock calculations MP2/6-311++G(d,p), MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ, MP4(SDQ)/6-311++G(d,p) and CCSD/6-311++G(d,p) also were also used. The infrared spectra were analyzed in order to identify the new vibrational modes and frequencies of the proton donors shifted to red region. Through the modeling of charge-fluxes on the basis of the Quantum Theory of Atoms In Molecules (QTAIM) and, by contradicting the expectation of the hydrofluorination mechanisms of acetylene or ethylene, C⋯HF was recognized as a new type of hydrogen bond instead of the already well known π⋯H. The calculations of the Natural Bonding Orbital (NBO) and Charges derived from the Electrostatic Potential Grid-based (ChElPG) were also applied to interpret the shifting frequencies as well as measuring of the punctual charge-transfer after the formation of the complexes. Finally, the determination of the stabilization energy was carried out through the arguments of the Fock matrix in NBO basis and through the supermolecule approach. Also it is worthwhile to notice that some algebraic formulations were used for determining the electronic cooperative effect (CE).

Abstract
The animal product hazard factor N-glycolylneuraminic (Neu5Gc) and brain nutrient substance N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) were studied at the M062X/6-311 + G(d,p) geometry optimization level. We considered the electronic structure parameters with different solvents: (benzene ε = 2.27, acetic acid ε = 6.25, ethanol ε = 24.85, lactic acid ε = 22.00, formic acid ε = 51.1, water ε = 78.35). The maximum molecular surface electrostatic potentials, which were 62.77 for Neu5Gc and 60.90 kcal/mol for Neu5Ac, are both located on the carboxyl group hydrogen. The orbital analysis showed that the amide group and carboxyl group confer the sites with susceptibility to nucleophilic and electrophilic attack, respectively. The solvent effect showed that polar solvents, such as formic acid and water, can enhance the two molecules’ nucleophilic activity. To better understand the roles of the hydroxyl group in the two molecules, the independent gradient model theory confirmed the four intramolecular hydrogen bonds of Neu5Gc at gas phase, whereas Neu5Ac only has two. The lowest bond dissociation energy in solvent occurs at O7-H, which is 104.03 kcal/mol in water for Neu5Gc and 104.57 kcal/mol in lactic acid for Neu5Ac. The lowest proton affinity value for Neu5Gc (20.34 kcal/mol) and Neu5Ac (20.76 kcal/mol) was both occur at the carboxyl group O6-H under ethanol. The antioxidant mechanisms of the two sialic acid are prone to sequential proton-loss electron transfer under polar or non-polar solvents.

Abstract
The structure of the ortho-, meta- and para- hybrid diindolylmethane-phenylboronic acids and their interactions were optimized with by a quantum chemical method, using density functional theory at the (DFT) level. Thus, infrared bands were assigned based on the scaled theoretical wavenumbers by correlating the respective experimental data of the molecules. In addition, the corresponding 1H-/13C-/11B-NMR experimental and theoretical chemical shifts were correlated. The target molecules showed a poor treatment of the OH shifts in the GIAO method due to the absence of explicit solvent effects in these calculations; therefore, they were explicitly considered with acetone molecules. Moreover, the electron density at the hydrogen bond critical point increased, generating stabilization energy, from weak to moderate or weak to strong, serving as an indicator of the strength of the hydrogen bond between the different intermolecular interactions. Finally, some properties related to the reactive behavior of the target molecules associated with their cytotoxic effects and metabolic pathways were also calculated.

Abstract
This theoretical work exhibits a new systematic study of structural parameters, electronic properties, infrared vibration modes, and molecular topography of hydrogen complexes, namely linear-type HCN⋯HX and T-type C2H2⋯HX (X = F, Cl, CN, and CCH). Ideally, the knowledge of the ternary systems of C2H2⋯HCN⋯HF and HCN⋯HCN⋯HF whose subparts integrate the linear and T-shaped complexes were used to give support in this current research. By means of computational calculations carried out in both levels B3LYP and MP2, the variations of the HX bond lengths are clearly overestimated in the HCN⋯HX linear complexes. In agreement with the analyses of the electrostatic potentials, the higher intermolecular energies of these complexes agree with the larger red-shifts in the stretch frequencies in HX. Also, the QTAIM descriptors and NBO calculations were used to inspect the interaction strength as well as to confirm the π cloud as a proton accepting center. By taking into account the absorption intensity ratio as a standard parameter to predict the interaction strength and intermolecular characterization, the formalism of the charge-charge flux-overlap modified (CCFO) was applied.

Hydrogen-bonding Interactions between Apigenin and Ethanol/Water: A Theoretical Study. Sci Rep 2016; 6:34647. Abstract
In this work, hydrogen-bonding interactions between apigenin and water/ethanol were investigated from a theoretical perspective using quantum chemical calculations. Two conformations of apigenin molecule were considered in this work. The following results were found. (1) For apigenin monomer, the molecular structure is non-planar, and all of the hydrogen and oxygen atoms can be hydrogen-bonding sites. (2) Eight and seven optimized geometries are obtained for apigenin (I)–H2O/CH3CH2OH and apigenin (II)–H2O/CH3CH2OH complexes, respectively. In apigenin, excluding the aromatic hydrogen atoms in the phenyl substituent, all other hydrogen atoms and the oxygen atoms form hydrogen-bonds with H2O and CH3CH2OH. (3) In apigenin–H2O/CH3CH2OH complexes, the electron density and the E(2) in the related localized anti-bonding orbital are increased upon hydrogen-bond formation. These are the cause of the elongation and red-shift of the X−H bond. The sum of the charge change transfers from the hydrogen-bond acceptor to donor. The stronger interaction makes the charge change more intense than in the less stable structures. (4) Most of the hydrogen-bonds in the complexes are electrostatic in nature. However, the C4−O5···H, C9−O4···H and C13−O2···H hydrogen-bonds have some degree of covalent character. Furthermore, the hydroxyl groups of the apigenin molecule are the preferred hydrogen-bonding sites.

Abstract
Hydrogen bonding (HB) systems are known to be X-H∙∙∙Y type complexes, which are called conventional HB systems if the X and Y are strongly electronegative atoms such as O, N and halides or unconventional systems if the X is replaced by C. In this study, we devise a new dipole-induced HB that is formed between a hydrogen molecule and an alkali halide using ab initio calculations. The HB is depicted as H-H∙∙∙Y-M, in which MY are alkali halides. Analysis of the possible structures and properties of the proposed compounds, including their geometries, frequencies, bond strength, and natural charge distribution, as well as a topological analysis of electronic density, shows that the large dipole moment of the Y-M molecule is responsible for the generation of the proposed HB. We also find that the strength of HB can be tuned by adopting MY with various polarities. We hope that our findings could provide a new insight into HB.

Abstract
The process of papermaking requires substantial amounts of energy and wood consumption, which contributes to larger environmental costs. In order to optimize the production of papermaking to suit its many applications in material science and engineering, a quantitative understanding of bonding forces between the individual pulp fibers is of importance. Here we show the first approach to quantify the bonding energies contributed by the individual bonding mechanisms. We calculated the impact of the following mechanisms necessary for paper formation: mechanical interlocking, interdiffusion, capillary bridges, hydrogen bonding, Van der Waals forces, and Coulomb forces on the bonding energy. Experimental results quantify the area in molecular contact necessary for bonding. Atomic force microscopy experiments derive the impact of mechanical interlocking. Capillary bridges also contribute to the bond. A model based on the crystal structure of cellulose leads to values for the chemical bonds. In contrast to general believe which favors hydrogen bonding Van der Waals bonds play the most important role according to our model. Comparison with experimentally derived bond energies support the presented model. This study characterizes bond formation between pulp fibers leading to insight that could be potentially used to optimize the papermaking process, while reducing energy and wood consumption.

Abstract
A theoretical study of hydrogen bonds and dihydrogen bonds formed by ethyl cation, hydrocarbons and magnesium hydride is presented with calculations performed at the BHandHLYP/6-31G(d,p) level of theory. The structural results and IR analyses demonstrated great insights, mainly the strengthening and weakness of the CC bond of the ethyl cation and π or pseudo-π bonds, respectively. The interaction strength was measured through the supermolecule as well as by means of additional approaches. The QTAIM calculations were applied to characterize not only the intermolecular interactions but specifically the covalent character in the H + ⋯ π, H + ⋯ pseudo-π and H + ⋯ H contacts. The NBO calculations were useful to interpret the polarization on the CC bond and whether this effect is related with the bond length reduction as well as increase of charge density and frequency shifts.

Abstract
In this work, the existence of multiple interactions in heterocyclic complexes of C2H4O⋯nHCCl3 and C2H4S⋯nHCCl3 with n=2 and 3 was unveiled at the B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) level of theory. The forward analyses of the vibrational spectra revealed the appearing of red-shifts in the H-C bond. In agreement with this and through the optimized geometries of these systems, an increase in the H-C bond length was also observed. Besides O⋯H and S⋯H, other hydrogen bonds formed between chlorine⋯hydrogen and mainly the halogen interactions formed by chlorine⋯chlorine were identified. Thereby, the vibration spectra of the heterocyclic complexes were reanalyzed with the purpose to locate new red-shifts, although only those characterized in H-C have been detected up to then. In addition to the correlation between the frequencies shifted to downward values followed by increases in the bond lengths, the interpretation of the red-shifts was conducted by means of the Bent rule of the hybridization theory. The interaction strength was examined in several viewpoints, and one of them was the relationship between the H-bond energies and the intermolecular electronic density computed by means of the Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM). Moreover, the prediction of the interaction strength was also made through the combination between vibration modes (red-shifts) and variation of topological parameters, such as the electronic density and Laplacian of the proton donor bond (C-H).
