A simple recoverable titration method for quantitative characterization of amine-functionalized carbon nanotubes

Biomimetically Inspired Highly Homogeneous Hydrophilization of Graphene with Poly(l-DOPA): Toward Electroconductive Coatings from Water-Processable Paints

Water-based processing of graphene-typically considered as physicochemically incompatible with water in the macroscale-emerges as the key challenge among the central postulates of green nanotechnology. These problematic concerns are derived from the complex nature of graphene in the family of sp2-carbon nanoallotropes. Indeed, nanomaterials hidden under the common "graphene" signboard are very rich in morphological and physicochemical variants. In this work, inspired by the adhesion chemistry of mussel biomaterials, we have synthesized novel, water-processable graphene-polylevodopa (PDOPA) hybrids. Graphene and PDOPA were covalently amalgamated via the "growth-from" polymerization of l-DOPA (l-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) monomer in air, yielding homogeneously PDOPA-coated (23 wt %) (of thickness 10-20 nm) hydrophilic flakes. The hybrids formed >1 year stable and water-processable aqueous dispersions and further conveniently processable paints of viscosity 0.4 Pa·s at 20 s-1 and a low yield stress τ0 up to 0.12 Pa, hence exhibiting long shelf-life stability and lacking sagging after application. Demonstrating their applicability, we have found them as surfactant-like nanoparticles stabilizing the larger, pristine graphene agglomerates in water in the optimized graphene/graphene-PDOPA weight ratio of 9:1. These characteristics enabled the manufacture of conveniently paintable coatings of low surface resistivity of 1.9 kΩ sq-1 (0.21 Ω·m) which, in turn, emerge as potentially applicable in textronics, radar-absorbing materials, or electromagnetic interference shielding.

Tailoring Properties of Metal-Free Catalysts for the Highly Efficient Desulfurization of Sour Gases under Harsh Conditions

Carbon-based nanomaterials, particularly in the form of N-doped networks, are receiving the attention of the catalysis community as effective metal-free systems for a relatively wide range of industrially relevant transformations. Among them, they have drawn attention as highly valuable and durable catalysts for the selective hydrogen sulfide oxidation to elemental sulfur in the treatment of natural gas. In this contribution, we report the outstanding performance of N-C/SiC based composites obtained by the surface coating of a non-oxide ceramic with a mesoporous N-doped carbon phase, starting from commercially available and cheap food-grade components. Our study points out on the importance of controlling the chemical and morphological properties of the N-C phase to get more effective and robust catalysts suitable to operate H2S removal from sour (acid) gases under severe desulfurization conditions (high GHSVs and concentrations of aromatics as sour gas stream contaminants). We firstly discuss the optimization of the SiC impregnation/thermal treatment sequences for the N-C phase growth as well as on the role of aromatic contaminants in concentrations as high as 4 vol.% on the catalyst performance and its stability on run. A long-term desulfurization process (up to 720 h), in the presence of intermittent toluene rates (as aromatic contaminant) and variable operative temperatures, has been used to validate the excellent performance of our optimized N-C2/SiC catalyst as well as to rationalize its unique stability and coke-resistance on run.

Optimal generation number in magnetic-cored dendrimers as Pb(II) and Cd(II) adsorbents

As the generation number of dendrimers increases, more organic branches and terminal groups are synthesized on the surface. However, this may not be actual situations in all generations of dendrimers. Different generations of magnetic cored dendrimer (MCD) terminalized with amine functional groups were compared as adsorbents for heavy metal ions in water. To determine the optimal generation number as adsorbent, the maximal adsorption of lead and cadmium on generation 1, 2, and 3 (G1, G2, and G3) MCDs. Higher generation MCD had more organic contents and possibly terminal groups on its structure. However, G2 MCD was the highest in adsorbing both lead and cadmium. An acid-base titration was performed to quantify the amine functional groups. The active amine sites on G2 are 4.35 times as much as that of G1 and 0.12 times as much as that of G3, which coincided with the adsorption experimental result. Incomplete dendritic structure formation due to steric hindrance caused G2 MCD to be the most efficient among the three generations of MCDs in this research.

A mesoporous N-doped carbon coating for SiC extrudates shows excellent H₂S desulfurization performance along with remarkably high resistance towards deactivation/fouling in the presence of aromatics as contaminant.

Computational calculation identified optimal binding sites in nano-sized magnetic-cored dendrimer

Magnetic-cored dendrimers (MDs) with amino groups were prepared with the formation of poly(amidoamine) dendrimer on the surface of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs). The experiment involved the binding of four different heavy metal ions including Pb (II), Cu (II), Zn (II), and Cr (VI). Density functional theory (DFT) calculation was applied to the experimental results to determine the optimal configurations between the heavy metal species and generation 1 amino (NH₂) functionalized MD (G1-NH₂-MD). Different binding configurations among the possible binding positions of inner and outer G1-NH₂-MD were determined with the ionic radius and coordination number of each heavy metal ion. Although Pb²⁺ and Zn²⁺ were stable in the terminal positions, Cu²⁺ was the most stable in the internal position. The oxygen and hydrogen atoms of HCrO₄^- formed a hydrogen bond with the NH₂ groups, and thus dipole-nonpolar molecular interaction occurred with the CH₂ groups of G1-NH₂-MD. Specific binding positions and energies of different heavy metal species were identified through the DFT calculation in the study. The DFT calculation results also contributed to an understanding of the binding priority of each metal ions in the mixed solution. Furthermore, Pb²⁺ was preferably adsorbed in the mixed solution of Pb²⁺, Cu²⁺, and Zn²⁺.

Functionalized Natural Carbon-Supported Nanoparticles as Excellent Catalysts for Hydrocarbon Production

We report a one-pot and eco-friendly synthesis of carbon-supported cobalt nanoparticles, achieved by carbonization of waste biomass (rice bran) with a cobalt source. The functionalized biomass provides carbon microspheres as excellent catalyst support, forming a unique interface between hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups. The latter, involving hydroxyl and amino groups, can catch much more active cobalt nanoparticles on surface for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis than chemical carbon. The loading amount of cobalt on the final catalyst is much higher than that prepared with a chemical carbon source, such as glucose. The proposed concept of using a functionalized natural carbon source shows great potential compared with conventional carbon sources, and will be meaningful for other fields concerning carbon support, such as heterogeneous catalysis or electrochemical fields.

Aziridine-Functionalized Multiwalled Carbon Nanotubes: Robust and Versatile Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Knoevenagel Condensation

This paper describes the exohedral N-decoration of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with NH-aziridine groups via [2 + 1] cycloaddition of a tert-butyl-oxycarbonyl nitrene followed by controlled thermal decomposition of the cyclization product. The chemical grafting with N-containing groups deeply modifies the properties of the starting MWCNTs, generating new surface microenvironments with specific base (Brønsted) and electronic properties. Both of these features translate into a highly versatile single-phase heterogeneous catalyst (MW@N^Az) with remarkable chemical and electrochemical performance. Its surface base character promotes the Knoevenagel condensation with activity superior to that of related state of the art N-doped and N-decorated carbon nanomaterials; the N-induced electronic surface redistribution drives the generation of high-energy surface "C" sites suitable for O₂ activation and its subsequent electrochemical reduction (ORR).

Characterization of amine stabilized CdSe/ZnS core–shell quantum dots by using triarylpyrylium dyes

A new method to study the stabilizing primary amine ligands coordinated to the surface of CdSe/ZnS core–shell quantum dots has been developed.
