Dissociation between the Perceptual and Saccadic Localization of Moving Objects

Perception-action Dissociations as a Window into Consciousness

Understanding the neural correlates of unconscious perception stands as a primary goal of experimental research in cognitive psychology and neuroscience. In this Perspectives paper, we explain why experimental protocols probing qualitative dissociations between perception and action provide valuable insights into conscious and unconscious processing, along with their corresponding neural correlates. We present research that utilizes human eye movements as a sensitive indicator of unconscious visual processing. Given the increasing reliance on oculomotor and pupillary responses in consciousness research, these dissociations also provide a cautionary tale about inferring conscious perception solely based on no-report protocols.

Shared Mechanisms Drive Ocular Following and Motion Perception

How features of complex visual patterns are combined to drive perception and eye movements is not well understood. Here we simultaneously assessed human observers' perceptual direction estimates and ocular following responses (OFR) evoked by moving plaids made from two summed gratings with varying contrast ratios. When the gratings were of equal contrast, observers' eye movements and perceptual reports followed the motion of the plaid pattern. However, when the contrasts were unequal, eye movements and reports during early phases of the OFR were biased toward the direction of the high-contrast grating component; during later phases, both responses followed the plaid pattern direction. The shift from component- to pattern-driven behavior resembles the shift in tuning seen under similar conditions in neuronal responses recorded from monkey MT. Moreover, for some conditions, pattern tracking and perceptual reports were correlated on a trial-by-trial basis. The OFR may therefore provide a precise behavioral readout of the dynamics of neural motion integration for complex visual patterns.

Brain representations of motion and position in the double-drift illusion

In the 'double-drift' illusion, local motion within a window moving in the periphery of the visual field alters the window's perceived path. The illusion is strong even when the eyes track a target whose motion matches the window so that the stimulus remains stable on the retina. This implies that the illusion involves the integration of retinal signals with non-retinal eye-movement signals. To identify where in the brain this integration occurs, we measured BOLD fMRI responses in visual cortex while subjects experienced the double-drift illusion. We then used a combination of univariate and multivariate decoding analyses to identify (1) which brain areas were sensitive to the illusion and (2) whether these brain areas contained information about the illusory stimulus trajectory. We identified a number of cortical areas that responded more strongly during the illusion than a control condition that was matched for low-level stimulus properties. Only in area hMT+ was it possible to decode the illusory trajectory. We additionally performed a number of important controls that rule out possible low-level confounds. Concurrent eye tracking confirmed that subjects accurately tracked the moving target; we were unable to decode the illusion trajectory using eye position measurements recorded during fMRI scanning, ruling out explanations based on differences in oculomotor behavior. Our results provide evidence for a perceptual representation in human visual cortex that incorporates extraretinal information.

Aftereffect of perceived motion trajectories

If our visual system has a distinct computational process for motion trajectories, such a process may minimize redundancy and emphasize variation in object trajectories by adapting to the current statistics. Our experiments show that after adaptation to multiple objects traveling along trajectories with a common tilt, the trajectory of an object was perceived as tilting on the repulsive side. This trajectory aftereffect occurred irrespective of whether the tilt of the adapting stimulus was physical or an illusion from motion-induced position shifts and did not differ in size across the physical and illusory conditions. Moreover, when the perceived and physical tilts competed during adaptation, the trajectory aftereffect depended on the perceived tilt. The trajectory aftereffect transferred between hemifields and was not explained by motion-insensitive orientation adaptation or attention. These findings provide evidence for a trajectory-specific adaptable process that depends on higher-order representations after the integration of position and motion signals.

Different extrapolation of moving object locations in perception, smooth pursuit, and saccades

The ability to accurately perceive and track moving objects is crucial for many everyday activities. In this study, we use a "double-drift stimulus" to explore the processing of visual motion signals that underlie perception, pursuit, and saccade responses to a moving object. Participants were presented with peripheral moving apertures filled with noise that either drifted orthogonally to the aperture's direction or had no net motion. Participants were asked to saccade to and track these targets with their gaze as soon as they appeared and then to report their direction. In the trials with internal motion, the target disappeared at saccade onset so that the first 100 ms of the postsaccadic pursuit response was driven uniquely by peripheral information gathered before saccade onset. This provided independent measures of perceptual, pursuit, and saccadic responses to the double-drift stimulus on a trial-by-trial basis. Our analysis revealed systematic differences between saccadic responses, on one hand, and perceptual and pursuit responses, on the other. These differences are unlikely to be caused by differences in the processing of motion signals because both saccades and pursuits seem to rely on shared target position and velocity information. We conclude that our results are instead due to a difference in how the processing mechanisms underlying perception, pursuit, and saccades combine motor signals with target position. These findings advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying dissociation in visual processing between perception and eye movements.

Neural mechanisms of visual motion extrapolation

Because neural processing takes time, the brain only has delayed access to sensory information. When localising moving objects this is problematic, as an object will have moved on by the time its position has been determined. Here, we consider predictive motion extrapolation as a fundamental delay-compensation strategy. From a population-coding perspective, we outline how extrapolation can be achieved by a forwards shift in the population-level activity distribution. We identify general mechanisms underlying such shifts, involving various asymmetries which facilitate the targeted 'enhancement' and/or 'dampening' of population-level activity. We classify these on the basis of their potential implementation (intra- vs inter-regional processes) and consider specific examples in different visual regions. We consider how motion extrapolation can be achieved during inter-regional signaling, and how asymmetric connectivity patterns which support extrapolation can emerge spontaneously from local synaptic learning rules. Finally, we consider how more abstract 'model-based' predictive strategies might be implemented. Overall, we present an integrative framework for understanding how the brain determines the real-time position of moving objects, despite neural delays.

The double-drift illusion biases the marmoset oculomotor system

The double-drift illusion has two unique characteristics: The error between the perceived and physical position of the stimulus grows over time, and saccades to the moving target land much closer to the physical than the perceived location. These results suggest that the perceptual and saccade targeting systems integrate visual information over different time scales. Functional imaging studies in humans have revealed several potential cortical areas of interest, including the prefrontal cortex. However, we currently lack an animal model to study the neural mechanisms of location perception that underlie the double-drift illusion. To fill this gap, we trained two marmoset monkeys to fixate and then saccade to the double-drift stimulus. In line with human observers for radial double-drift trajectories with fast internal motion, we find that saccade endpoints show a significant bias that is, nevertheless, smaller than the bias seen in human perceptual reports. This bias is modulated by changes in the external and internal speeds of the stimulus. These results demonstrate that the saccade targeting system of the marmoset monkey is influenced by the double-drift illusion.

A framework for understanding post-detection deception in predator-prey interactions

Predators and prey exist in persistent conflict that often hinges on deception-the transmission of misleading or manipulative signals-as a means for survival. Deceptive traits are widespread across taxa and sensory systems, representing an evolutionarily successful and common strategy. Moreover, the highly conserved nature of the major sensory systems often extends these traits past single species predator-prey interactions toward a broader set of perceivers. As such, deceptive traits can provide a unique window into the capabilities, constraints and commonalities across divergent and phylogenetically-related perceivers. Researchers have studied deceptive traits for centuries, but a unified framework for categorizing different types of post-detection deception in predator-prey conflict still holds potential to inform future research. We suggest that deceptive traits can be distinguished by their effect on object formation processes. Perceptual objects are composed of physical attributes (what) and spatial (where) information. Deceptive traits that operate after object formation can therefore influence the perception and processing of either or both of these axes. We build upon previous work using a perceiver perspective approach to delineate deceptive traits by whether they closely match the sensory information of another object or create a discrepancy between perception and reality by exploiting the sensory shortcuts and perceptual biases of their perceiver. We then further divide this second category, sensory illusions, into traits that distort object characteristics along either the what or where axes, and those that create the perception of whole novel objects, integrating the what/where axes. Using predator-prey examples, we detail each step in this framework and propose future avenues for research. We suggest that this framework will help organize the many forms of deceptive traits and help generate predictions about selective forces that have driven animal form and behavior across evolutionary time.

The cost of aiming for the best answers: Inconsistent perception

The laws of physics and mathematics describe the world we live in as internally consistent. As these rules provide a very effective description, and our interaction with the world is also very effective, it seems self-evident that our perception follows these laws. As a result, when trying to explain imperfections in perception, we tend to impose consistency and introduce concepts such as deformations of visual space. In this review, we provide numerous examples that show that in many situations we perceive related attributes to have inconsistent values. We discuss how our tendency to assume consistency leads to erroneous conclusions on how we process sensory information. We propose that perception is not about creating a consistent internal representation of the outside world, but about answering specific questions about the outside world. As the information used to answer a question is specific for that question, this naturally leads to inconsistencies in perception and to an apparent dissociation between some perceptual judgments and related actions.

Force illusion induced by visual illusion: Illusory curve in cursor path is interpreted as unintended force

Discrepancies between expected and actual visual outcomes of motor action can produce an illusory sensation of unintended force. In the present study, we addressed whether the force illusion could be induced even when the discrepancy was brought about by the illusory appearance of the actual outcome. Specifically, the apparent path of a cursor controlled by the participants was modulated by the direction of noise motion presented inside the cursor. We showed that a greater noise motion inside the cursor caused a greater apparent curve of the cursor path and, also, higher rating scores for an unintended force. We also found that the unintended force was influenced strongly by the visibility of the cursor, suggesting that the apparent curve of the cursor path was a more important factor in generating the unintended force than the noise motion itself inside the cursor. Our results suggest that the illusory force, which is mediated by cross-modal mechanisms susceptible to visual illusion, can be exploited in extended reality systems as a novel technique for giving users a sensation of force.

Motor recalibration of visual and saccadic maps

How does the brain maintain an accurate visual representation of external space? Movement errors following saccade execution provide sufficient information to recalibrate motor and visual space. Here, we asked whether spatial information for vision and saccades is processed in shared or in separate resources. We used saccade adaptation to modify both, saccade amplitudes and visual mislocalization. After saccade adaptation was induced, we compared participants' saccadic and perceptual localization before and after we inserted 'no error' trials. In these trials, we clamped the post-saccadic error online to the predicted endpoints of saccades. In separate experiments, we either annulled the retinal or the prediction error. We also varied the number of 'no error' trials across conditions. In all conditions, we found that saccade adaptation remained undisturbed by the insertion of 'no error' trials. However, mislocalization decreased as a function of the number of trials in which zero retinal error was displayed. When the prediction error was clamped to zero, no mislocalization was observed at all. The results demonstrate the post-saccadic error is used separately to recalibrate visual and saccadic space.

Spatial localization during open-loop smooth pursuit

Introduction

Numerous previous studies have shown that eye movements induce errors in the localization of briefly flashed stimuli. Remarkably, the error pattern is indicative of the underlying eye movement and the exact experimental condition. For smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) and the slow phase of the optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), perceived stimulus locations are shifted in the direction of the ongoing eye movement, with a hemifield asymmetry observed only during SPEM. During the slow phases of the optokinetic afternystagmus (OKAN), however, the error pattern can be described as a perceptual expansion of space. Different from SPEM and OKN, the OKAN is an open-loop eye movement.

Methods

Visually guided smooth pursuit can be transformed into an open-loop eye movement by briefly blanking the pursuit target (gap). Here, we examined flash localization during open-loop pursuit and asked, whether localization is also prone to errors and whether these are similar to those found during SPEM or during OKAN. Human subjects tracked a pursuit target. In half of the trials, the target was extinguished for 300 ms (gap) during the steady-state, inducing open-loop pursuit. Flashes were presented during this gap or during steady-state (closed-loop) pursuit.

Results

In both conditions, perceived flash locations were shifted in the direction of the eye movement. The overall error pattern was very similar with error size being slightly smaller in the gap condition. The differences between errors in the open- and closed-loop conditions were largest in the central visual field and smallest in the periphery.

Discussion

We discuss the findings in light of the neural substrates driving the different forms of eye movements.

The combination of target motion and dynamic changes in context greatly enhance visual size illusions

Perceived size is a function of viewing distance, retinal images size, and various contextual cues such as linear perspective and the size and location of neighboring objects. Recently, we demonstrated that illusion magnitudes of classic visual size illusions may be greatly enhanced or reduced by adding dynamic elements. Specifically, a dynamic version of the Ebbinghaus illusion (classically considered a “size contrast” illusion) led to a greatly enhanced illusory effect, whereas a dynamic version of the Corridor illusion (a “size constancy” illusion) led to a greatly diminished illusory effect. Although these differences may arise from the different processes underlying these illusions (size contrast vs. size constancy), the dynamic variants we tested in our previous work also differed in the nature of the dynamic elements; specifically, whereas the Dynamic Ebbinghaus included a moving target and inducers that changed size and position, the Dynamic Corridor only included a moving target on a static background. Here, we explore further dynamic versions of the Ebbinghaus illusion and the Corridor and Ponzo illusions by separately manipulating three types of dynamic elements: target motion, context translation, and dynamic changes in context. Across five experiments examining 21 dynamic illusory configurations, adding target motion or a dynamically changing context separately resulted in little-to-no illusory effect. In contrast, the combination of target motion and a dynamically changing context led to a robust size illusion, consistent with an interactive effect. However, illusory effects that exceeded the matched classic, static illusory configuration were only observed for the dynamic versions of the Ebbinghaus illusion and the Revealed Ponzo illusions, in which the contextual elements changed size. We conclude that the combination of target motion and a dynamically changing context are necessary to produce dynamic size illusions, but that enhancement above and beyond static illusions may be largely specific to size contrast effects. Our results have important implications for the integration of motion signals, a ubiquitous environmental stimulus, in the perception of object size.

Serial dependence for oculomotor control depends on early sensory signals

To create an accurate percept of the world, the visual system relies on past experience and prior assumptions.¹ For example, although the retinal projection of an object moving in depth changes drastically, we still perceive the object at a constant size and velocity.^2,3 Consequently, if we see the same object with a constant retinal size at two different depth levels, the perceived size differs (illustrated by the Ponzo illusion). Past experience also directly influences perceptual judgments, an effect known as serial dependence.^4,5 Such sequential effects have also been reported for oculomotor behavior, even on the trial-by-trial level.^6-10 An integration of past experiences seems like a smart and sophisticated mechanism to reduce uncertainty and improve behavior in a world full of statistical regularities. By leveraging the Ponzo illusion to dissociate perceived size and speed from retinal signals, we show that serial-dependence effects for oculomotor control are mediated by retinal error signals. These sequential effects likely take place in early sensory processing because they transfer to different visual stimuli. In contrast to recently reported history effects for perceptual decisions,¹¹ sequential effects for oculomotor control deviate from perceptual mechanisms by not integrating spatial context and by ignoring size and velocity constancy. Although this dissociation might appear suboptimal, we argue that this effect reveals the different goals of the oculomotor and perceptual systems. The oculomotor system tries to reduce retinal error signals to bring and keep the target close to the fovea, whereas the visual system interprets retinal input to achieve an accurate representation of the world.¹².

Perceptual decisions and oculomotor responses rely on temporally distinct streams of evidence

Perceptual decisions often require the integration of noisy sensory evidence over time. This process is formalized with sequential sampling models, where evidence is accumulated up to a decision threshold before a choice is made. Although intuition suggests that decision formation must precede the preparation of a motor response (i.e., the action used to communicate the choice), neurophysiological findings have suggested that these two processes might be one and the same. To test this idea, we developed a reverse-correlation protocol in which the visual stimuli that influence decisions can be distinguished from those guiding motor responses. In three experiments, we found that the temporal weighting function of oculomotor responses did not overlap with the relatively early weighting function of stimulus properties having an impact on decision formation. These results support a timeline in which perceptual decisions are formed, at least in part, prior to the preparation of a motor response.

The human primary visual cortex (V1) encodes the perceived position of static but not moving objects

Brain activity in retinotopic cortex reflects illusory changes in stimulus position. Is this neural signature a general code for apparent position? Here we show that responses in primary visual cortex (V1) are consistent with perception of the Muller-Lyer illusion; however, we found no such signature for another striking illusion, the curveball effect. This demonstrates that V1 does not encode apparent position per se.

Measuring the double-drift illusion and its resets with hand trajectories

If a Gabor pattern drifts in one direction while its internal texture drifts in the orthogonal direction, its perceived position deviates further and further away from its true path. We first evaluated the illusion using manual tracking. Participants followed the Gabor with a stylus on a drawing tablet that coincided optically with the horizontal monitor surface. Their hand and the stylus were not visible during the tracking. The magnitude of the tracking illusion corresponded closely to previous perceptual and pointing measures indicating that manual tracking is a valid measure for the illusion. This allowed us to use it in a second experiment to capture the behavior of the illusion as it eventually degrades and breaks down in single trials. Specifically, the deviation of the Gabor stops accumulating at some point and either stays at a fixed offset or resets toward the veridical position. To report the perceived trajectory of the Gabor, participants drew it after the Gabor was removed from the monitor. Resets were detected and analyzed and their distribution matches neither a temporal nor a spatial limit, but rather a broad gamma distribution over time. This suggests that resets are triggered randomly, about once per 1.3 seconds, possible by extraneous distractions or eye movements.

Illusion of visual stability through active perceptual serial dependence

Despite a noisy and ever-changing visual world, our perceptual experience seems remarkably stable over time. How does our visual system achieve this apparent stability? Here, we introduce a previously unknown visual illusion that shows direct evidence for an online mechanism continuously smoothing our percepts over time. As a result, a continuously seen physically changing object can be misperceived as unchanging. We find that online object appearance is captured by past visual experience up to 15 seconds ago. We propose that, because of an underlying active mechanism of serial dependence, the representation of the object is continuously merged over time, and the consequence is an illusory stability in which object appearance is biased toward the past. Our results provide a direct demonstration of the link between serial dependence in visual representations and perceived visual stability in everyday life.

The implicit sense of agency is not a perceptual effect but is a judgment effect

The sense of agency (SoA) is characterized as the sense of being the causal agent of one's own actions, and it is measured in two forms: explicit and implicit. In the explicit SoA experiments, the participants explicitly report whether they have a sense of control over their actions or whether they or somebody else is the causal agent of seen actions; the implicit SoA experiments study how do participants' agentive or voluntary actions modify perceptual processes (like time, vision, tactility, and audition) without directly asking the participants to explicitly think about their causal agency or sense of control. However, recent implicit SoA literature reported contradictory findings of the relationship between implicit SoA reports and agency states. Thus, I argue that the purported implicit SoA reports are not agency-driven perceptual effects per se but are judgment effects, by showing that (a) the typical operationalizations in implicit SoA domain lead to perceptual uncertainty on the part of the participants, (b) under uncertainty, participants' implicit SoA reports are due to heuristic judgments which are independent of agency states, and (c) under perceptual certainty, the typical implicit SoA reports might not have occurred at all. Thus, I conclude that the instances of implicit SoA are judgments (or response biases)-under uncertainty-rather than perceptual effects.

Smooth pursuit operates over perceived not physical positions of the double-drift stimulus

The double-drift illusion produces a large deviation in perceived direction that strongly dissociates physical position from perceived position. Surprisingly, saccades do not seem to be affected by the illusion (Lisi & Cavanagh, 2015). When targeting a double-drift stimulus, the saccade system is driven by retinal rather than perceived position. Here, using paired double-drift targets, we test whether the smooth pursuit system is driven by perceived or physical position. Participants (n = 7) smoothly pursued the inferred midpoint (Steinbach, 1976) between two horizontally aligned Gabor patches that were separated by 20° and moving on parallel, oblique paths. On the first half of each trial, the Gabors’ internal textures were static while both drifted obliquely downward. On the second half of each trial, while the envelope moved obliquely upward, the internal texture drifted orthogonally to the envelope's motion, producing a large perceived deviation from the downward path even though the upward and downward trajectories always followed the same physical path but in opposite directions. We find that smooth pursuit eye movements accurately followed the nonillusory downward path of the midpoint between the two Gabors, but then followed the illusory rather than the physical trajectory on the upward return. Thus, virtual targets for smooth pursuit are derived from perceived rather than retinal coordinates.

V1 as an egocentric cognitive map

We typically distinguish between V1 as an egocentric perceptual map and the hippocampus as an allocentric cognitive map. In this article, we argue that V1 also functions as a post-perceptual egocentric cognitive map. We argue that three well-documented functions of V1, namely (i) the estimation of distance, (ii) the estimation of size, and (iii) multisensory integration, are better understood as post-perceptual cognitive inferences. This argument has two important implications. First, we argue that V1 must function as the neural correlates of the visual perception/cognition distinction and suggest how this can be accommodated by V1's laminar structure. Second, we use this insight to propose a low-level account of visual consciousness in contrast to mid-level accounts (recurrent processing theory; integrated information theory) and higher-level accounts (higher-order thought; global workspace theory). Detection thresholds have been traditionally used to rule out such an approach, but we explain why it is a mistake to equate visibility (and therefore the presence/absence of visual experience) with detection thresholds.

A change in perspective: The interaction of saccadic and pursuit eye movements in oculomotor control and perception

Due to the close relationship between oculomotor behavior and visual processing, eye movements have been studied in many different areas of research over the last few decades. While these studies have brought interesting insights, specialization within each research area comes at the potential cost of a narrow and isolated view of the oculomotor system. In this review, we want to expand this perspective by looking at the interactions between the two most important types of voluntary eye movements: saccades and pursuit. Recent evidence indicates multiple interactions and shared signals at the behavioral and neurophysiological level for oculomotor control and for visual perception during pursuit and saccades. Oculomotor control seems to be based on shared position- and velocity-related information, which leads to multiple behavioral interactions and synergies. The distinction between position- and velocity-related information seems to be also present at the neurophysiological level. In addition, visual perception seems to be based on shared efferent signals about upcoming eye positions and velocities, which are to some degree independent of the actual oculomotor response. This review suggests an interactive perspective on the oculomotor system, based mainly on different types of sensory input, and less so on separate subsystems for saccadic or pursuit eye movements.

Effects of internal and external velocity on the perceived direction of the double-drift illusion

In the double-drift illusion, the combination of the internal and external motion vectors produces large misperceptions of both position and direction of motion. Here, we investigate the role that speed plays in determining how these two sources of motion are combined to produce the double-drift illusion. To address this question, we measure the size of the illusion at seven internal speeds combined with six external speeds. We find that the illusion increases with increasing internal speed and decreases with increasing external speed. We model this by combining the external and internal vectors to produce the resulting, illusory direction (Tse & Hsieh, 2006). The relative effect of the two vectors is specified by a constant K in this model and the data reveal that K decreases linearly as external speed increases. This critical role of external speed in modulating the vector combination uncovers new details about how the visual system combines different sources of motion information to produce a global motion percept.

Visual perceptual learning generalizes to untrained effectors

Visual perceptual learning (VPL) is an improvement in visual function following training. Although the practical utility of VPL was once thought to be limited by its specificity to the precise stimuli used during training, more recent work has shown that such specificity can be overcome with appropriate training protocols. In contrast, relatively little is known about the extent to which VPL exhibits motor specificity. Previous studies have yielded mixed results. In this work, we have examined the effector specificity of VPL by training observers on a motion discrimination task that maintains the same visual stimulus (drifting grating) and task structure, but that requires different effectors to indicate the response (saccade vs. button press). We find that, in these conditions, VPL transfers fully between a manual and an oculomotor response. These results are consistent with the idea that VPL entails the learning of a decision rule that can generalize across effectors.

Color Modulates Feature Integration

Bayesian models of object recognition propose the resolution of ambiguity through probabilistic integration of prior experience with available sensory information. Color, even when task-irrelevant, has been shown to modulate high-level cognitive control tasks. However, it remains unclear how color modulations affect lower-level perceptual processing. We investigated whether color affects feature integration using the flash-jump illusion. This illusion occurs when an apparent motion stimulus, a rectangular bar appearing at different locations along a motion trajectory, changes color at a single position. Observers misperceive this color change as occurring farther along the trajectory of motion. This mislocalization error is proposed to be produced by a Bayesian perceptual framework dependent on responses in area V4. Our results demonstrated that the color of the flash modulated the magnitude of the flash-jump illusion such that participants reported less of a shift, i.e., a more veridical flash location, for both red and blue flashes, as compared to green and yellow. Our findings extend color-dependent modulation effects found in higher-order executive functions into lower-level Bayesian perceptual processes. Our results also support the theory that feature integration is a Bayesian process. In this framework, color modulations play an inherent and automatic role as different colors have different weights in Bayesian perceptual processing.

Dynamic presentation boosts the Ebbinghaus illusion but reduces the Müller-Lyer and orientation contrast illusions

Mruczek et al. (2015) showed that a moving version of the Ebbinghaus illusion almost doubles in strength compared to the standard version. In their stimulus, the size of the surrounding inducers was modulated between large and small and the whole stimulus was made to drift during the surround modulation. We first replicated the original dynamic Ebbinghaus illusion and then explored dynamic presentations for other simultaneous contrast and geometric illusions. We found no increase in illusion strength in any that we sampled. Here we report the results for the Müller-Lyer illusion and the orientation contrast illusion. Surprisingly, when these two illusions were presented dynamically, their effects were greatly reduced for the Müller-Lyer illusion and eliminated for the orientation contrast illusion.

A position anchor sinks the double-drift illusion

When the internal texture of a Gabor patch moves orthogonally to its envelope's motion, the perceived path, viewed in the periphery, shifts dramatically in position, and direction relative to the true path (the double-drift illusion). Here, we examine positional uncertainty as a critical factor underlying this illusory shift. We presented participants with an anchoring line at different distances from the drifting Gabor's physical path. Our results indicate that placing an anchor (a fixed line) close to the Gabor's path halved the magnitude of the illusion. This suppression was symmetrical for anchors placed on either side of the Gabor. In a second experiment, we used crowding to degrade the anchoring line's position information by embedding it in a set of parallel lines. In this case, despite the presence of the same lines that reduced the illusion when presented in isolation, the illusory shift was now largely restored. We suggest that the adjacent lines crowded each other, reducing their positional certainty, and thus their ability to anchor the location of the moving Gabor. These findings indicate that the positional uncertainty of the equiluminant Gabor patch is critical for the illusory position offset.

The role of eye movements in manual interception: A mini-review

When we catch a moving object in mid-flight, our eyes and hands are directed toward the object. Yet, the functional role of eye movements in guiding interceptive hand movements is not yet well understood. This review synthesizes emergent views on the importance of eye movements during manual interception with an emphasis on laboratory studies published since 2015. We discuss the role of eye movements in forming visual predictions about a moving object, and for enhancing the accuracy of interceptive hand movements through feedforward (extraretinal) and feedback (retinal) signals. We conclude by proposing a framework that defines the role of human eye movements for manual interception accuracy as a function of visual certainty and object motion predictability.

Attention updates the perceived position of moving objects

The information used by conscious perception may differ from that which drives certain actions. A dramatic illusion caused by an object's internal texture motion has been put forward as one example. The motion causes an illusory position shift that accumulates over seconds into a large effect, but targeting of the grating for a saccade (a rapid eye movement) is not affected by this illusion. While this has been described as a dissociation between perception and action, an alternative explanation is that rather than saccade targeting having privileged access to the correct position, a shift of attention that precedes saccades resets the accumulated illusory position shift to zero. In support of this possibility, we found that the accumulation of illusory position shift can be reset by transients near the moving object, creating an impression of the object returning to near its actual position. Repetitive luminance changes of the object also resulted in reset of the accumulation, but less so when attention to the object was reduced by a concurrent digit identification task. Finally, judgments of the object's positions around the time of saccade onset reflected the veridical rather than the illusory position. These results suggest that attentional shifts, including those preceding saccades, can update the perceived position of moving objects and mediate the previously reported dissociation between conscious perception and saccades.

Attentional tracking takes place over perceived rather than veridical positions

Illusions can induce striking differences between perception and retinal input. For instance, a static Gabor with a moving internal texture appears to be shifted in the direction of its internal motion, a shift that increases dramatically when the Gabor itself is also in motion. Here, we ask whether attention operates on the perceptual or physical location of this stimulus. To do so, we generated an attentional tracking task where participants (N = 15) had to keep track of a single target among three Gabors that rotated around a common center in the periphery. During tracking, the illusion was used to make three Gabors appear either shifted away from or toward one another while maintaining the same physical separation. Because tracking performance depends in part on target to distractor spacing, if attention selects targets from perceived positions, performance should be better when the Gabors appear further apart and worse when they appear closer together. We find that tracking performance is superior with greater perceived separation, implying that attentional tracking operates over perceived rather than physical positions.

Pop-out for illusory rather than veridical trajectories with double-drift stimuli

If a patch of texture drifts in one direction while its internal texture drifts in the orthogonal direction, the perceived direction of this double-drift stimulus (also known as the infinite regress and curveball illusions) deviates strongly from its physical direction. Here, we use double-drift stimuli to construct two types of search arrays: The first had an oddball target in terms of the physical trajectories, but no oddball for the perceived trajectory, whereas the second had a perceptual oddball, but no physical oddball. We used these two arrays to determine whether pop-out operates over physical or perceived trajectories. Participants reported the location of the odd double-drift stimulus that had either a unique physical or perceived trajectory in a set of four or eight items. When the distractors all shared one perceived trajectory, but the target had an odd perceived trajectory, it popped out even though the physical trajectories of the stimuli were mixed: Accuracy rates were at ceiling, and response times decreased with increasing set size. In contrast, participants were significantly less accurate and slower at finding the physical oddball when all the paths had a common perceived trajectory. Moreover, responses became less accurate and slower with increasing set size. Our findings suggest that, at least for this type of stimulus, perceptual features can be processed rapidly, whereas the search for physical features is very inefficient.

Adaptation to geometrically skewed moving images: An asymmetrical effect on the double-drift illusion

Progressive addition lenses introduce distortions in the peripheral visual field that alter both form and motion perception. Here we seek to understand how our peripheral visual field adapts to complex distortions. The adaptation was induced across the visual field by geometrically skewed image sequences, and aftereffects were measured via changes in perception of the double-drift illusion. The double-drift or curveball stimulus contains both local and object motion. Therefore, the aftereffects induced by geometrical distortions might be indicative of how this adaptation interacts with the local and object motion signals. In the absence of the local motion components, the adaptation to skewness modified the perceived trajectory of object motion in the opposite direction of the adaptation stimulus skew. This effect demonstrates that the environment can also tune perceived object trajectories. Testing with the full double-drift stimulus, adaptation to a skew in the opposite direction to the local motion component induced a change in perception, reducing the illusion magnitude (when the stimulus was presented on the right side of the screen. A non-statistically significant shift, when stimuli were on the left side). However, adaptation to the other orientation resulted in no change in the strength of the double-drift illusion (for both stimuli locations). Thus, it seems that the adaptor's orientation and the motion statistics of the stimulus jointly define the perception of the measured aftereffect. In conclusion, not only size, contrast or drifting speed affects the double-drift illusion, but also adaptation to image distortions.

Opposite effects of motion dynamics on the Ebbinghaus and corridor illusions

We recently showed that motion dynamics greatly enhance the magnitude of certain size contrast illusions, such as the Ebbinghaus and Delboeuf illusions. Here, we extend our study of the effect of motion dynamics on size illusions through a novel dynamic corridor illusion, in which a single target translates along a corridor background. Across three psychophysical experiments, we quantify the effects of stimulus dynamics on the Ebbinghaus and corridor illusions across different viewing conditions. The results revealed that stimulus dynamics had opposite effects on these different classes of size illusions. Whereas dynamic motion enhanced the magnitude of the Ebbinghaus illusion, it attenuated the magnitude the corridor illusion. Our results highlight precision-driven weighting of visual cues by neural circuits computing perceived object size. This hypothesis is consistent with observations beyond size perception and may represent a more general principle of cue integration in the visual system.

The effect of the Müller-Lyer configuration on saccadic eye movements is not fully due to illusory perception

Previous research has shown that both perception and oculomotor control are affected by visual illusions. While these findings appear to suggest a common code of visual processing for perception and oculomotor control, there remains the possibility that the perceptual and the oculomotor effects emerge through partially different processes. In three experiments, we replicated the previous finding that perception and saccades were both biased by the typical Müller-Lyer configurations. However, using a non-Müller-Lyer setup in which the perceptual illusion effect was much restrained, we did not observe a comparable reduction in the saccadic effect. Instead, the saccadic effect by Müller-Lyer configuration could be partially due to the center-of-gravity (CoG) effect (i.e., the tendency for saccades to land at the center of gravity of the stimuli). These results indicate that the influence of the Müller-Lyer configuration on saccadic eye movements is a mixed effect of perceptual representation and CoG, rather than exclusively due to the illusory perception. We further found that the saccadic and perceptual effects were not correlated at the trial-by-trial level, which suggest that there could be largely independent sources of noise for perception and saccadic control.NEW & NOTEWORTHY The Müller-Lyer illusion affects both perception and oculomotor control, but it is unknown whether these effects arise from the same or different underlying mechanisms. We developed a modified version of the Müller-Lyer configuration, which largely reduced the perceptual illusion effect compared with the typical configuration but reduced the saccadic effect to a much less extent. Such difference indicates that influence of the Müller-Lyer configuration on saccadic eye movements is not fully mediated by illusory perception.

Apparent Motion Is Computed in Perceptual Coordinates

When a Gabor moves in one direction in the visual periphery while its internal texture moves in the orthogonal direction, its perceived direction can deviate from its physical direction by as much as 45° or more. Lisi et al. showed that immediate saccades go to the physical location of double-drift targets, whereas delayed saccades primarily go to their perceived locations. Here, we investigated whether the apparent motion seen from the offset of a double-drift stimulus to the onset of a later target probe originates from the perceived or physical location of the double-drift stimulus. We find that apparent motion proceeds away from the perceived position of the double-drift stimulus at all temporal delays. This suggests that apparent motion is computed in perceptual rather than retinotopic coordinates.

The vector combination underlying the double-drift illusion is based on motion in world coordinates: Evidence from smooth pursuit

If a Gabor pattern drifts in one direction while its internal texture drifts in the orthogonal direction, its perceived direction deviates strongly from its true direction and is instead some combination of its real external motion and its internal motion (Tse & Hsieh, 2006). In the first experiment, we confirm that, for the stimuli used in our experiment, the direction shifts on a gray background were explained by a vector combination of the internal and external motions whereas for the Gabor on a black background, we find no illusory shifts. These results suggest that the internal motion contributes to the perceived direction but only when the Gabor's positional uncertainty is high. Next, we test whether the vector combination is based on motions on the retina or motions in the world. When participants track a fixation point that moves in tandem with the Gabor, keeping it roughly stable on the retina, the illusion is undiminished. This finding indicates that the vector combination of internal and external motion that produces the double-drift illusion must happen after the eye movement signals have been factored into the stimulus motions to recover motions in the world, in particular, in areas V3A, V6, MSTd, and VIP.

Dynamic combination of position and motion information when tracking moving targets

To accurately foveate a moving target, the oculomotor system needs to estimate the position of the target at the saccade end, based on information about its position and ongoing movement, while accounting for neuronal delays and execution time of the saccade. We investigated human interceptive saccades and pursuit responses to moving targets defined by high and low luminance contrast or by chromatic contrast only (isoluminance). We used step-ramps with perpendicular directions between vertical target steps of 10 deg/s and horizontal ramps of 2.5 to 20 deg/s to separate errors with respect to the position step of the target in the vertical dimension, and errors related to target motion in the horizontal dimension. Interceptive saccades to targets of high and low luminance contrast landed close to the actual target positions, suggesting relatively accurate estimates of the amount of target displacement. Interceptive saccades to isoluminant targets were less accurate. They landed at positions the target had on average 100 ms before saccade onset. One account of this finding is that the integration of target motion is compromised for isoluminant targets moving in the periphery. In this case, the oculomotor system can use an accurate, but delayed position component, but cannot account for target movement. This deficit was also present for the postsaccadic pursuit speed. For the two luminance conditions, pursuit direction and speed were adjusted depending on the saccadic landing position. The rapid postsaccadic pursuit adjustments suggest shared position- and motion-related signals of target and eye for saccade and pursuit control.

Neural Correlates of the Conscious Perception of Visual Location Lie Outside Visual Cortex

When perception differs from the physical stimulus, as it does for visual illusions and binocular rivalry, the opportunity arises to localize where perception emerges in the visual processing hierarchy. Representations prior to that stage differ from the eventual conscious percept even though they provide input to it. Here, we investigate where and how a remarkable misperception of position emerges in the brain. This "double-drift" illusion causes a dramatic mismatch between retinal and perceived location, producing a perceived motion path that can differ from its physical path by 45° or more. The deviations in the perceived trajectory can accumulate over at least a second, whereas other motion-induced position shifts accumulate over 80-100 ms before saturating. Using fMRI and multivariate pattern analysis, we find that the illusory path does not share activity patterns with a matched physical path in any early visual areas. In contrast, a whole-brain searchlight analysis reveals a shared representation in anterior regions of the brain. These higher-order areas would have the longer time constants required to accumulate the small moment-to-moment position offsets that presumably originate in early visual cortical areas and then transform these sensory inputs into a final conscious percept. The dissociation between perception and the activity in early sensory cortex suggests that consciously perceived position does not emerge in what is traditionally regarded as the visual system but instead emerges at a higher level.

The Wandering Circles: A Flicker Rate and Contour-Dependent Motion Illusion

Understanding of the visual system can be informed by examining errors in perception. We present a novel illusion-Wandering Circles-in which stationary circles undergoing contrast-polarity reversals (i.e., flicker), when viewed peripherally, appear to move about in a random fashion. In two psychophysical experiments, participants rated the strength of perceived illusory motion under varying stimulus conditions. The illusory motion percept was strongest when the circle's edge was defined by a light/dark alternation and when the edge faded smoothly to the background gray (i.e., a circular arrangement of the Craik-O'Brien-Cornsweet illusion). In addition, the percept of illusory motion is flicker rate dependent, appearing strongest when the circles reversed polarity 9.44 times per second and weakest at 1.98 times per second. The Wandering Circles differ from many other classic motion illusions as the light/dark alternation is perfectly balanced in time and position around the edges of the circle, and thus, there is no net directional local or global motion energy in the stimulus. The perceived motion may instead rely on factors internal to the viewer such as top-down influences, asymmetries in luminance and motion perception across the retina, adaptation combined with positional uncertainty due to peripheral viewing, eye movements, or low contrast edges.

Distinct temporal developments of visual motion and position representations for multi-stream visuomotor coordination

A fundamental but controversial question in information coding of moving visual target is which of 'motion' or 'position' signal is employed in the brain for producing quick motor reactions. Prevailing theory assumed that visually guided reaching is driven always via target position representation influenced by various motion signals (e.g., target texture and surroundings). To rigorously examine this theory, we manipulated the nature of the influence of internal texture motion on the position representation of the target in reaching correction tasks. By focusing on the difference in illusory position shift of targets with the soft- and hard-edges, we succeeded in extracting the temporal development of an indirect effect only ascribed to changes in position representation. Our data revealed that the onset of indirect effect is significantly slower than the adjustment onset itself. This evidence indicates multi-stream processing in visuomotor control: fast and direct contribution of visual motion for quick action initiation, and relatively slow contribution of position representation updated by relevant motion signals for continuous action regulation. The distinctive visuomotor mechanism would be crucial in successfully interacting with time-varying environments in the real world.

Gain control of saccadic eye movements is probabilistic

Saccades are rapid eye movements that orient the visual axis toward objects of interest to allow their processing by the central, high-acuity retina. Our ability to collect visual information efficiently relies on saccadic accuracy, which is limited by a combination of uncertainty in the location of the target and motor noise. It has been observed that saccades have a systematic tendency to fall short of their intended targets, and it has been suggested that this bias originates from a cost function that overly penalizes hypermetric errors. Here, we tested this hypothesis by systematically manipulating the positional uncertainty of saccadic targets. We found that increasing uncertainty produced not only a larger spread of the saccadic endpoints but also more hypometric errors and a systematic bias toward the average of target locations in a given block, revealing that prior knowledge was integrated into saccadic planning. Moreover, by examining how variability and bias covaried across conditions, we estimated the asymmetry of the cost function and found that it was related to individual differences in the additional time needed to program secondary saccades for correcting hypermetric errors, relative to hypometric ones. Taken together, these findings reveal that the saccadic system uses a probabilistic-Bayesian control strategy to compensate for uncertainty in a statistically principled way and to minimize the expected cost of saccadic errors.

Memory for retinotopic locations is more accurate than memory for spatiotopic locations, even for visually guided reaching

To interact successfully with objects, we must maintain stable representations of their locations in the world. However, their images on the retina may be displaced several times per second by large, rapid eye movements. A number of studies have demonstrated that visual processing is heavily influenced by gaze-centered (retinotopic) information, including a recent finding that memory for an object's location is more accurate and precise in gaze-centered (retinotopic) than world-centered (spatiotopic) coordinates (Golomb & Kanwisher, 2012b). This effect is somewhat surprising, given our intuition that behavior is successfully guided by spatiotopic representations. In the present experiment, we asked whether the visual system may rely on a more spatiotopic memory store depending on the mode of responding. Specifically, we tested whether reaching toward and tapping directly on an object's location could improve memory for its spatiotopic location. Participants performed a spatial working memory task under four conditions: retinotopic vs. spatiotopic task, and computer mouse click vs. touchscreen reaching response. When participants responded by clicking with a mouse on the screen, we replicated Golomb & Kanwisher's original results, finding that memory was more accurate in retinotopic than spatiotopic coordinates and that the accuracy of spatiotopic memory deteriorated substantially more than retinotopic memory with additional eye movements during the memory delay. Critically, we found the same pattern of results when participants responded by using their finger to reach and tap the remembered location on the monitor. These results further support the hypothesis that spatial memory is natively retinotopic; we found no evidence that engaging the motor system improves spatiotopic memory across saccades.

Cortical Reorganization of Peripheral Vision Induced by Simulated Central Vision Loss

When one's central vision is deprived, a spared part of the peripheral retina acts as a pseudofovea for fixation. The neural mechanisms underlying this compensatory adjustment remain unclear. Here we report cortical reorganization induced by simulated central vision loss. Human subjects of both sexes learned to place the target at an eccentric retinal locus outside their blocked visual field for object tracking. Before and after training, we measured visual crowding-a bottleneck of object identification in peripheral vision, using psychophysics and fMRI. We found that training led to an axis-specific reduction of crowding. The change of the crowding effect was reflected in the change of BOLD signal, as a release of cortical suppression in multiple visual areas starting as early as V1. Our findings suggest that the adult visual system is capable of reshaping its oculomotor control and sensory coding to adapt to impoverished visual input.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT By simulating central vision loss in normally sighted adults, we found that oculomotor training not only induces PRL, but also facilitates form processing in peripheral vision. As subjects learned to place the target at an eccentric retinal locus, "visual crowding"-the detrimental effect of clutter on peripheral object identification-was reduced. The reduction of the crowding effect was accompanied by a release of response suppression in the visual cortex. These findings indicate that the adult visual system is capable of reshaping the peripheral vision to adapt to central vision loss.

Interactions of flicker and motion

We present a series of novel observations about interactions between flicker and motion that lead to three distinct perceptual effects. We use the term flicker to describe alternating changes in a stimulus' luminance or color (i.e. a circle that flickers from black to white and visa-versa). When objects flicker, three distinct phenomena can be observed: (1) Flicker Induced Motion (FLIM) in which a single, stationary object, appears to move when it flickers at certain rates; (2) Flicker Induced Motion Suppression (FLIMS) in which a moving object appears to be stationary when it flickers at certain rates, and (3) Flicker-Induced Induced-Motion (FLIIM) in which moving objects that are flickering induce another flickering stationary object to appear to move. Across four psychophysical experiments, we characterize key stimulus parameters underlying these flicker-motion interactions. Interactions were strongest in the periphery and at flicker frequencies above 10 Hz. Induced motion occurred not just for luminance flicker, but for isoluminant color changes as well. We also found that the more physically moving objects there were, the more motion induction to stationary objects occurred. We present demonstrations that the effects reported here cannot be fully accounted for by eye movements: we show that the perceived motion of multiple stationary objects that are induced to move via flicker can appear to move independently and in random directions, whereas eye movements would have caused all of the objects to appear to move coherently. These effects highlight the fundamental role of spatiotemporal dynamics in the representation of motion and the intimate relationship between flicker and motion.

A visual illusion that influences perception and action through the dorsal pathway

There are two main anatomically and physiologically defined visual pathways connecting the primary visual cortex with higher visual areas: the ventral and the dorsal pathway. The influential two-visual-systems hypothesis postulates that visual attributes are analyzed differently for different functions: in the dorsal pathway visual information is analyzed to guide actions, whereas in the ventral pathway visual information is analyzed for perceptual judgments. We here show that a person who cannot identify objects due to an extensive bilateral ventral brain lesion is able to judge the velocity at which an object moves. Moreover, both his velocity judgements and his interceptive actions are as susceptible to a motion illusion as those of people without brain lesions. These findings speak in favor of the idea that dorsal structures process information about attributes such as velocity, irrespective of whether such information is used for perceptual judgments or to guide actions.

Crowding and the Furrow Illusion

A spot moves vertically across a large grating of oblique parallel lines. When viewed peripherally, the motion path looks oblique, close to the orientation of the background grating. Even when the grating's orientation is concealed by crowding, it can still deflect the spot's perceived motion path.

Motion Extrapolation for Eye Movements Predicts Perceived Motion-Induced Position Shifts

Transmission delays in the nervous system pose challenges for the accurate localization of moving objects as the brain must rely on outdated information to determine their position in space. Acting effectively in the present requires that the brain compensates not only for the time lost in the transmission and processing of sensory information, but also for the expected time that will be spent preparing and executing motor programs. Failure to account for these delays will result in the mislocalization and mistargeting of moving objects. In the visuomotor system, where sensory and motor processes are tightly coupled, this predicts that the perceived position of an object should be related to the latency of saccadic eye movements aimed at it. Here we use the flash-grab effect, a mislocalization of briefly flashed stimuli in the direction of a reversing moving background, to induce shifts of perceived visual position in human observers (male and female). We find a linear relationship between saccade latency and perceived position shift, challenging the classic dissociation between "vision for action" and "vision for perception" for tasks of this kind and showing that oculomotor position representations are either shared with or tightly coupled to perceptual position representations. Altogether, we show that the visual system uses both the spatial and temporal characteristics of an upcoming saccade to localize visual objects for both action and perception.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Accurately localizing moving objects is a computational challenge for the brain due to the inevitable delays that result from neural transmission. To solve this, the brain might implement motion extrapolation, predicting where an object ought to be at the present moment. Here, we use the flash-grab effect to induce perceptual position shifts and show that the latency of imminent saccades predicts the perceived position of the objects they target. This counterintuitive finding is important because it not only shows that motion extrapolation mechanisms indeed work to reduce the behavioral impact of neural transmission delays in the human brain, but also that these mechanisms are closely matched in the perceptual and oculomotor systems.

The faster you decide, the more accurate localization is possible: Position representation of "curveball illusion" in perception and eye movements

When the inside texture of a moving object moves, the perceived motion of the object is often distorted toward the direction of the texture's motion (motion-induced position shift), and such perceptual distortion accumulates while the object is watched, causing what is known as the curveball illusion. In a recent study, however, the accumulation of the position error was not observed in saccadic eye movements. Here, we examined whether the position of the illusory object is represented independently in the perceptual and saccadic systems. In the experiments, the stimulus of the curveball illusion was adopted to examine the temporal change in the position representation for saccadic eye movements and for perception by varying the elapsed time from the input of visual information to saccade onset and perceptual judgment, respectively. The results showed that the temporal accumulation of the motion-induced position shift is observed not only in perception but also in saccadic eye movements. In the saccade tasks, the landing positions of saccades gradually shifted to the illusory perceived position as the elapsed time from the target offset to the saccade "go" signal increased. Furthermore, in the perception task, shortening the time between the target offset and the perceptual judgment reduced the size of the illusion effect. Therefore, these results argue against the idea of dissociation between saccadic and perceptual localization of a moving object suggested in the previous study, in which saccades were measured in a rushed way while perceptual responses were measured without time constraint. Instead, the similar temporal trends of these effects imply a common or similar target representation for perception and eye movements which dynamically changes over the course of evidence accumulation.
