Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) when bonding a universal resin cement to a disilicate glass-ceramic using different adhesive protocols. Sixty specimens were etched with 10% hydrofluoric acid (HF) for 20 s and assigned to one of four treatment protocols (n = 15): The Positive control protocol comprised use of a universal adhesive system + adhesive resin cement; the Test1 protocol comprised use of a new universal adhesive system + universal resin cement; the Test2 protocol comprised use of a silane coupling agent + universal resin cement; and the use of a universal resin cement without adhesive and silane served as the Negative control. One of the two resin cement cylinders built on each specimen in each group was used to test for 24-h SBS, while the other was thermocycled and then tested for SBS. Data were submitted to two-way ANOVA, Tukey's test, and Weibull analysis. The negative control (24 h) showed the lowest SBS mean value. The Test2 protocol resulted in the highest SBS mean value after thermocycling. Adhesive and mixed failures were prevalent in all groups. No statistical difference in m values was observed among the groups at 24 h. After thermocycling, the two Test protocols showed the highest m values. The m values were significantly lower after thermocycling than at 24 h for all groups. After thermal aging, The Test2 protocol resulted in a statistically significantly higher SBS mean value after thermal aging than seen for the other groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This systematic review aims to understand the limitations and benefits of the guided direct restorative technique, to optimize the final outcomes, considering the evolution from analog to digital, including planning, the diversification of guides, and the different resins employed. METHODOLOGY A search was conducted in the electronic databases PubMed, Cochrane, and through manual searches, initiated in May 2023 and updated in April 2024. The following search strategy was used: ((injectable composite resin) OR (direct pressed composite)) OR (3D-guided), utilizing the PICO framework. RESULTS Initially, 739 articles were retrieved. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, 33 studies were considered suitable for data extraction, including 12 in vitro studies and 21 case reports or technique descriptions. The articles focused on comparisons of techniques, flowable, heated, and conventional resins, as well as various technique reports with variations in guides, materials, and planning, potentially aiding clinicians in more effective and safer execution of this restorative technique. CONCLUSION The utilization of digital workflows presents greater solutions to the challenges of the guided direct restorative technique. Understanding the properties of the resins used is crucial for the results and should be chosen according to the patient's needs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE A guided direct restorative procedure can deliver previously planned dental treatment based on individualized planning. This method ensures greater reproducibility in aesthetics and occlusion, resulting in superior quality work for the patient.

Abstract
Objectives: To evaluate the fracture resistance of veneered incisor crowns made from highly translucent zirconia frameworks. Materials and Methods: Ninety-six all-ceramic single crowns were based on either a coping with minimum wall thickness or a cutback framework fabricated from highly translucent zirconia (5Y-PSZ). Each one-third of the specimens was finalized with different veneering ceramics using standardizations and glaze firing. Crowns were luted to cobalt-chromium dies with MDP-containing composite cement. Half of the entire sample underwent artificial aging (chewing simulation and thermocycling) before fracture load tests were conducted using a 6 mm steel sphere applied in a 90° angle to the oral aspect of the crowns with 1.3 mm distance to the incisal edge. Besides descriptive presentation of recorded forces at first damage (F1d) and fracture (Fu), Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney U tests were used to analyze data at α = 0.05. Results: Directly after manufacturing, incisor crowns of all test groups showed sufficient mean fracture resistances. After artificial aging, crack formation was observed in a high percentage for fully veneered crowns of all test groups, but only for one veneering ceramics with cutback crowns. Mean test forces of unaged crowns were F1d,mean ≥ 422 N | Fu,mean ≥ 749 N (fully veneered) and F1d,mean ≥ 644 N | Fu,mean ≥ 706 N (cutback) dropped significantly to F1d,mean ≥ 131 N | Fu,mean ≥ 223 N (fully veneered) and F1d,mean ≥ 324 N | Fu,mean ≥ 524 N (cutback) . Conclusions: Within the limitations of this laboratory study, 5Y-PSZ based anterior crowns can be a viable treatment option. Framework design, choice of the veneering ceramics and artificial aging show relevant effects on the fracture resistances. Concerted veneering ceramics should be used and partially veneering of the zirconia frameworks should be favored over full veneers.

Abstract
Ceramic partial laminate veneers represent a conservative option for the correction of morphological abnormalities, diastemas, and fractured anterior teeth, with minimal or no tooth preparation. The present clinical report describes the use of a partial laminate veneer to correct the shape of a maxillary right central incisor to match the restoration of the more damaged adjacent tooth. The failure of the partial laminate veneer after only 18 months was analyzed using a systematic fractographic approach, identifying critical considerations that should be addressed when providing this type of restoration.

Abstract
Lithium disilicate (Li2 Si2 O5 ) glass-ceramics are currently a more widely used all-ceramic restorative material due to their good mechanical properties and excellent aesthetic properties. However, they have a series of problems such as high brittleness and low fracture toughness, which has become the main bottleneck restricting its development. Therefore, in order to compensate for these shortcomings, we propose to prepare a reinforced glass-ceramics with better mechanical properties and to test the biosafety and chemical solubility of the material. Li2 Si2 O5 whiskers were synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method, and multi-scale crystal-enhanced Li2 Si2 O5 glass-ceramics were prepared by reaction sintering. The biosafety of multi-scale crystal-reinforced Li2 Si2 O5 glass-ceramics was investigated by in vitro cytotoxicity test, rabbit pyrogen test, mice bone marrow micronucleus test, skin sensitization test, sub-chronic systemic toxicity test, and chronic systemic toxicity test. Additionally, the chemical solubility of multi-scale crystal-reinforced Li2 Si2 O5 glass-ceramics was investigated. The test results showed that the material was non-cytotoxic, non-thermogenic, non-mutagenic, non-sensitizing, and non-systemic. The chemical solubility, determined to be 377 ± 245 μg/cm2 , complied with the ISO 6872 standard for the maximum solubility of ceramic materials. Multi-scale crystal-reinforced Li2 Si2 O5 glass-ceramics' biosafety and chemical solubility met current normative criteria, and they can move on to mechanical property measurements (such as flexural strength test, fatigue life test, friction and wear property study, etc.) and bonding property optimization, which shows promise for future clinical applications.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the flexural strength and fatigue behavior of a novel 3D-printed composite resin for definitive restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty disc-shaped specimens were manufactured from each of a nanohybrid composite resin (NHC), polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN), and 3D-printed composite resin (3D) with CAD-CAM technology. Biaxial flexural strength (σin ) (n = 30 per group) and biaxial flexural fatigue strength (σff ) (n = 20 per group) were measured using piston-on-three-balls method, employing a staircase approach of 105 cycles. Weibull statistics, relative-strength degradation calculations, and fractography were performed. The results were analyzed with 1-way ANOVA and Games-Howell post hoc test (α = 0.05). RESULTS Significant differences in σin and σff among the groups (p < 0.001) were detected. The NHC group provided the highest mean ± standard deviation σin and σff (237.3 ± 31.6 MPa and 141.3 ± 3.8 MPa), followed by the PICN (140.3 ± 12.9 MPa and 73.5 ± 9.9 MPa) and the 3D (83.6 ± 18.5 MPa and 37.4 ± 23.8 MPa) groups. The 3D group exhibited significantly lower Weibull modulus (m = 4.7) and up to 15% higher relative strength degradation with areas of nonhomogeneous microstructure as possible fracture origins. CONCLUSIONS The 3D-printed composite resin exhibited the lowest mechanical properties, where areas of nonhomogeneous microstructure developed during the mixing procedure served as potential fracture origins. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The clinical indications of the investigated novel 3D-printed composite resin should be limited to long-term provisional restorations. A cautious procedure for mixing the components is crucial before the 3D-printing process, since nonhomogeneous areas developed during the mixing could act as fracture origins.

Abstract
Background Computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin ceramics allow easier milling than glass ceramics but are suspected to be more stainable. Although Photoshop® is widely used for picture analysis, its potential for shade selection has not been properly assessed. Aim Purpose primary: To evaluate the color stability of three CAD/CAM resin ceramics and Lithium Disilicate. Secondary: to compare the color evaluation between a spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade compact) and Photoshop software. Materials and Methods Three CAD/CAM resin ceramic materials (n = 10) and a fourth group of lithium disilicate were used. Half of each group were thermocycled (5°C and 55°C; 3000 cycles). All samples were immersed in colored beverages (coffee, tea and red wine) for 30 days. Values were obtained by spectrophotometry and photographs analyzed using Photoshop software. The parameters measured were CIEL*a*b, and the color difference (ΔE) was analyzed. A mixed model test was used to compare the results through time and materials (α = 0.05). The comparison between the spectrophotometer and Photoshop results was performed using the bivariate Pearson's correlation test. Results Lithium disilicate glass ceramic exhibited less color change (ΔE = 14) than resin ceramics (15.7 < ΔE < 18.7). The least change was noted with GC Cerasmart (ΔE = 15.7) followed by Vita Enamic (ΔE = 17*) and Brilliant Crios (ΔE = 18.7*). Spectrophotometer and Photoshop values showed low correlations. Conclusions Resin ceramics may suffer from color change in clinical use. Photoshop is technique sensitive; pictures are easily affected by the light conditions and camera settings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate retrospectively the longevity of lithium disilicate ceramic (LidiSi) vs. laboratory-processed resin-based composite (RBC) inlay/onlay/overlay restorations and risk factors associated with restoration deficiencies and failures. METHODS Patients (n = 91) receiving LidiSi (73.1%) and RBC (36.9%) inlays/onlays/overlays between 2007 and 2017 were selected. The restorations were evaluated using the modified U.S. Public Health Service criteria. The survival of the restorations was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method and log rank test. Factors affecting the occurrence of deficiencies were examined by logistic regression analysis. This was performed with the use of the Generalized Estimating Equation model including Repeated measurements (GEER), with the consideration that the same patient had several teeth in the sample. Risk estimation was conducted for each evaluated criterion (p < 0.05). RESULTS The survival of LidiSi and RBC restorations were 96.8% and 84.9%, respectively after a mean observation period of 7.8 ± 3.3 years. The annual failure rate was 0.2% for LidiSi and 1.0% for RBC. The probability of survival was above 98% for both restorations in the first 6 years, however, it dropped to 60% for RBC by the end of the 15th year. For both materials the reasons for failure included secondary caries, restoration fracture, and endodontic complication. In addition, LidiSi also failed due to tooth fracture, while RBC due to marginal gap formation and loss of retention. Among the evaluated risk factors, material of restoration (OR=6.8, CI95%:3.1-14.9), oral hygiene (OR=8.0, CI95%: 2.9-22.1], and bruxism (OR=1.9, CI95%: 1.1-3.3) showed a significant impact on the evaluated criteria. SIGNIFICANCE LidiSi and RBC restorations showed similarly excellent 6-year survival, however, in the long term significantly more failures should be expected for RBCs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the influence of the presence and position of bidirectional E-glass fibers under a CAD-CAM resin composite on the fracture pattern evaluated both after quasi-static mechanical loading and after fatigue. METHODS Rectangular specimens (10 mm-long, 5 mm-large and 4.2 mm-thick) were prepared and divided into four groups (n = 30/group). The control group (C-Group) consisted of a 4.2 mm-thick layer of monolithic CAD/CAM resin composite resin (Cerasmart, GC). In the 3 other groups including the placement of a fiber layer (F-Groups), the CAD/CAM resin composite layer was reduced to 3-, 2- and 1-mm thickness (F3-, F2- and F1-Groups, respectively). Two bonded layers of bidirectional E-glass FRC (Dentapreg, ADM A.S.) were bonded underneath and a light-curable resin composite base (Gaenial Posterior, GC) was then added to reach a total thickness of 4.2 mm for all samples. In each group, half of the specimens (n = 15) were submitted to quasi-static mechanical loading to failure in a universal testing machine. The other half (n = 15) was subjected to cyclic isometric stepwise loading until failure or completion of 105000 cycles (5000 cycles at 500 N, followed by five stages of 20000 cycles at 750 N, 1000 N, 1250 N, 1500 N, and 1750 N). The data were analyzed by Weibull statistics for quasi-static loading, and by the Kaplan-Meier product limit estimation procedure after fatigue. All fractured specimens were studied using light and electron microscopy techniques, and the types of fracture were determined. RESULTS For quasi-static mechanical loading, significant differences were observed for Weibull modulus and characteristic strength between groups, with values ranging from 10.8 to 22.4 for the former and from 2336.6 to 2974.7 for the latter. Also, survival after stepwise fatigue revealed statistically significant differences between groups (p < 0.05), the lowest values of cycles before failure being observed for F1-Group - Median = 61223 (50415; 65446) - as compared to the other groups - C-Group: Median = 89005 (86189; 98195); F3-Group: Median = 85198 (77279; 87860); F2-Group: Median = 89306 (87454; 97024). Both in quasi-static loading and after fatigue, the observation of fracture modes revealed major differences. While all fractures were vertical (split) in C-Group, the majority of the specimens in F-Groups presented some degree of horizontal deflection of the crack. In all deviated fractures, fractographic analysis confirmed a toughening effect of the fiber layer. SIGNIFICANCE The present in vitro work tends to show that the fracture pattern of CAD-CAM resin composites is favorably affected by the presence and position of an underlying bidirectional E-glass fiber layer. The placement of E-glass fibers under a CAD-CAM resin composite may therefore represent an interesting strategy to reduce the risk of catastrophic restoration failure, which could be integrated in the development of the new generation of indirect materials, possibly in 3D-printing approaches.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate load-bearing capacity and wear performance of experimental short fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) and conventional lithium-disilicate CAD/CAM fabricated fixed partial dentures (FPDs). Two groups (n = 12/group) of three-unit CAD/CAM fabricated posterior FPDs were made. The first group used experimental SFRC blocks, and the second group fabricated from lithium-disilicate (IPS e.max CAD). All FPDs were luted on a zirconia testing jig with dual-curing resin cement. Half of FPDs per group were quasi-statically loaded until fracture. The other half experienced cyclic fatigue aging (100.000 cycles, Fmax = 500 N) before loading quasi-statically until fracture. Fracture mode was examined using SEM. Wear test was performed using 15,000 loading cycles. Both material type and aging had a significant effect on the load-bearing capacity of FPDs. Experimental SFRC CAD without fatigue aging had significantly the highest load-bearing capacity (2096 ± 149N). Cyclic fatigue aging decreased the load-bearing capacity of the SFRC group (1709 ± 188N) but increased it for the lithium-disilicate group (1546 ± 155N). Wear depth values of SFRC CAD (29.3μm) were significantly lower compared to lithium-disilicate (54.2μm). Experimental SFRC CAD demonstrated the highest load-bearing capacity before and after cyclic fatigue aging, and superior wear behavior compared to the control material.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to compare the flexural strength and Weibull characteristics of 3 different resin-ceramic materials with a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate material after thermal-cycling. MATERIAL AND METHODS Four different computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing restorative materials (Vita Enamic, Lava Ultimate, Crystal Ultra, and Vita Suprinity) were tested. A total of 40 Ø12×1.2-mm disks were prepared and divided into 4 groups (n = 10). Their flexural strength was evaluated after 5000 thermal-cycles with a 4-point biaxial flexure test using a universal testing machine. The Weibull modulus and probability of failure were also determined from the biaxial flexural strength data. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and the Tukey pairwise comparison test (α = 0.05). RESULTS Significant differences were found among the materials in terms of biaxial flexural strength (p < 0.05). Vita Suprinity had the highest mean ±standard deviation flexural strength (289.1 ± 15.1 MPa), and Vita Enamic had the lowest (100.0 ± 3.2 MPa). The highest Weibull modulus was calculated for Crystal Ultra, followed by Vita Enamic, Lava Ultimate, and Vita Suprinity. CONCLUSION Vita Suprinity had the highest flexural strength when compared with the other materials tested. Crystal Ultra had the highest flexural strength among the resin-ceramic materials. The highest Weibull modulus was calculated for Crystal Ultra and the lowest for Vita Suprinity.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the effects of cusp inclination of the prosthetic preparation's occlusal surface and type of restorative material on the fatigue behavior, failure mode, and stress distribution of occlusal veneers. MATERIALS AND METHODS Glass fiber-reinforced epoxy resin prosthetic preparations for occlusal veneers with three different occlusal surface cusp inclination degrees (0°, 15°, and 30°) were produced and assigned into six testing groups (n = 11) according to the cusp inclination (0°, 15°, or 30°) and type of restorative material (lithium disilicate-LD or resin composite-RC). Despite different substrate preparation cusp inclination degrees, the restorations were designed maintaining 30° inclination between the cusps at the occlusal surface and a thickness of 0.7 mm at the central groove region of the restorations to be machined in a CAD/CAM system. After cementation, the specimens were stored for about 7 days (under water at 37 °C), and subsequently submitted to a load to failure test (n = 2) and an intermittent cyclic fatigue test (n = 9) (initial load: 100 N; step size: 50 N; cycles/step: 10,000; loading frequency: 20 Hz; loading piston: 6-mm-diameter stainless steel) until observing cracks. The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA, Kaplan-Meier, and Mantel-Cox post hoc tests. Finite element analysis (FEA) and fractographic analyses were performed. RESULTS The fatigue performance of LD and RC occlusal veneers was evaluated based on different prosthetic preparation cusp inclinations. The 0° inclination showed the best fatigue performance for both materials (LD: 944N, RC: 861N), while the 15° and 30° inclinations had lower values (LD: 800N and 533N, RC: 739N and 717N, respectively). The study also found that for a 0° inclination, LD occlusal veneers performed better than RC ones (LD: 944 N > RC: 861N), while for a 30° inclination, RC occlusal veneers had better fatigue performance than LD ones (LD: 533N < RC: 717N). No significant difference was observed between the materials for a 15° inclination (LD: 800N = RC: 739N). The FEA results showed a higher tensile stress concentration on lithium disilicate than on resin composite occlusal veneers. All lithium disilicate occlusal veneers showed radial crack failures, while resin composite occlusal veneers showed Hertzian cone cracks and radial cracks combined. CONCLUSION Considering mechanical perspective only, RC occlusal veneers should be indicated when prosthetic preparation cusps inclinations are 30°. When 0° prosthetic preparation cusps inclinations are observed, LD occlusal veneers will behave mechanically better. When a 15° cusp inclination is preserved, both restorative materials behave similarly.

Abstract
Occlusal rest provides support for removable partial dentures (RPD). Rest seats are ideally prepared in enamel, but the abutment teeth might be restored or need restorations. This study compared the fracture strength of abutments restored with composite to amalgam restorations after rest seat preparation. Disto-occlusal cavities were prepared in 30 extracted human maxillary premolars. The specimens were allocated in three groups (n = 10) based on the type of restoration. All the specimens were exposed to thermomechanical aging followed by cycling loading. Fracture strength was tested using a universal testing machine, and then, the fracture mode was recorded. The data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test with a significance level set at 0.05. The fracture mode was recorded as catastrophic or non-catastrophic. The fracture strength between all tested groups showed no significant difference. The highest and lowest fracture strength were recorded on amalgam and Tetric N-Ceram groups, respectively. Composite Tetric N-Ceram showed equal distribution of fracture sites on the restorative materials and teeth, it also displayed the highest number of non-catastrophic fractures unlike other groups where the fracture occurred more within the restorations. The fracture strength of composite was comparable to that of amalgam restorations with prepared rest seats.

Abstract
This study evaluated the influence of the TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on the mechanical and chemical performance of Sn and Sn-Ag alloys. The XRD (X-ray diffraction) and HR-TEM (high resolution-transmission electron microscopy) methods were used to characterize the NPs synthesized by the sol-gel microwave process. The chemical composition of the alloys was Sn, Sn+3TiO2 NPs, Sn-5Ag+1.5TiO2 NPs, Sn-10Ag, and Sn-10Ag+3TiO2 NPs, obtained from an experimental factorial design (EFD). A statistical model was used to determine the mechanical and chemical properties, showing the Vickers hardness response surface, tensile strength, wear, and corrosion resistance. The wear and corrosion tests for the various alloy compositions were performed using human artificial saliva solution. The results indicated that the Sn-10Ag+3TiO2 NPs exhibited the highest mechanical performance due to their increased hardness (380 HV), tensile strength (370 N), and wear resistance (0.34 × 10-3 mm3 Nm-1); in all the cases, the inclusion of TiO2 NPs enhanced the corrosion resistance of the alloys. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), Sn-10Ag+3TiO2 NPs alloy could be classified as a possible type IV restorative material.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the effect of different times and concentrations of hydrofluoric acid etching on the surface of indirect restorative materials obtained from blocks used in CAD-CAM technology. METHODS Specimens (4 mm × 4 mm × 0.8 mm) were obtained for each indirect restorative material: zirconia-reinforced lithium monosilicate ceramic (Celtra Duo), nanoceramic resin (Lava Ultimate), and polymer-infiltrated ceramic network material (Vita Enamic). The materials were submitted to etching with 5% or 10% hydrofluoric acid for 20, 40, 60, or 90 s. A control group for each material was evaluated without any surface treatment, totaling nine experimental groups for each material (n = 10). The specimens were evaluated for surface roughness (Ra and Rz), confocal optical microscopy, the contact angle (θ), surface free energy (γs), total free interaction energy (∆G) using a goniometer, and microshear bond strength to resin cement. Specimen images were obtained using scanning electron microscopy, confocal optical microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Data on the surface roughness, the contact angle, surface free energy, total free interaction energy, and bond strength were subjected to two-way ANOVA and Tukey´s test (α=0.05). RESULTS In general, Celtra Duo showed better results after etching with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 40 or 60 s. Lava Ultimate showed better performance after etching with 10% hydrofluoric acid for 20 or 40 s, whereas Vita Enamic showed better results after etching with 5% hydrofluoric acid for 90 s. CONCLUSION Each material showed different characteristics after etching with hydrofluoric acid. Knowledge of the proper protocol for each material is essential to ensure improvements in the adhesion process and durability of indirect restorations. In general, Celtra Duo presented mechanical properties superior to those of Lava Ultimate and Vita Enamic. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Specific etching protocols must be recommended for each indirect material because longer exposure to hydrofluoric acid can jeopardize the surface, thus affecting the mechanical and bond strength properties.

Abstract
The energy dissipation capacity and damping ability of restorative materials used to restore deciduous teeth were assessed compared to common mechanical properties. Mechanical properties (flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, modulus of toughness) for Compoglass F, Dyract eXtra, SDR flow, Tetric Evo Ceram, Tetric Evo Ceram Bulk Fill, and Venus Diamond were determined using a 4-point bending test. Vickers hardness and Martens hardness, together with its plastic index (ηITdis), were recorded using instrumented indentation testing. Leeb hardness (HLD) and its deduced energy dissipation data (HLDdis) were likewise determined. The reliability of materials was assessed using Weibull analysis. For common mechanical properties, Venus Diamond always exhibited the significantly highest results and SDR flow the lowest, except for flexural strength. Independently determined damping parameters (modulus of toughness, HLDdis, ηITdis) invariably disclosed the highest values for SDR flow. Composite materials, including SDR flow, showed markedly higher reliabilities (Weibull modulus) than Compoglass F and Dyract eXtra. SDR flow showed pronounced energy dissipation and damping characteristics, making it the most promising material for a biomimetic restoration of viscoelastic dentin structures in deciduous teeth. Future developments in composite technology should implement improved resin structures that facilitate damping effects in artificial restorative materials.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this in vitro study is to assess the color stability of different esthetic veneer restorative materials (feldspathic ceramic, hybrid ceramic, zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass ceramic, and composite resin) after being exposed to commonly consumed beverages that have staining potential. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty specimens were prepared into rectangular blocks with fixed dimensions of 10 × 12 × 2.5 mm. Machinable feldspathic ceramic (FC), zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass ceramic (LS), and a hybrid ceramic (HC) were milled using CAD/CAM (n = 15), and specimens of microparticle composite resin (MPC) were manually prepared by with the same dimensions (n = 15). All specimens were randomly divided into three subgroups (= 5) according to immersing solutions used (coffee, black tea, and red wine). All specimens were immersed for a period of 72 hours. A colorimetric evaluation was done for each specimen before and after immersion using a spectrophotometer and the difference in color was calculated according to the CIE-Lab system. To analyze the data, two-way ANOVA and one-way ANOVA tests of significance were used to compare between the different study groups, followed by pairwise comparisons using post hoc test (Tukey). RESULTS Different restorative materials showed statistical significance regarding color change after staining (p < 0.001); however, no statistical significance in color change (p > 0.05) was found between the different beverages used. CONCLUSION All tested ceramic materials had better color stability compared with composite resin. All the staining beverages used in the current study might cause a significant color change in the tested restorative materials. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The color stability of esthetic restorative materials affects their clinical performance in the oral cavity, where the restorative materials are usually exposed to staining beverages that are frequently consumed by patients. Therefore, it is important to understand the staining effect of the different beverages on esthetic restorative materials.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the fracture behavior of inlay-retained fixed partial dentures (IRFPDs) made of experimental short fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) block before and after cyclic fatigue aging. METHODS Five groups (n=20/group) of three-unit posterior IRFPDs were fabricated. The first and second groups were CAD/CAM fabricated from experimental SFRC blocks or lithium-disilicate (IPS e.max CAD, IVOCLAR) materials, the third group comprised a three-dimensional-printed composite (Temp PRINT, GC), and the fourth and fifth groups comprised conventional laboratory flowable composite (Gradia Plus, GC) and commercial flowable SFRC (everX Flow, GC), respectively. All IRFPDs were luted into a metal jig with adhesive dual-cure resin cement (RelyX Ultimate, 3M ESPE). Half the IRFPDs per group (n=10) were subjected to fatigue aging for 10,000 cycles. The remaining half were statically loaded until fracture without fatigue aging. The load was applied vertically between triangular ridges of the buccal and lingual cusps. The fracture mode was visually examined using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were statistically analyzed using a two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's HSD test. RESULTS ANOVA revealed that IRFPDs made of experimental SFRC CAD/CAM had the highest (p<0.05) load-bearing capacity before (2624±463 N) and after (2775±297 N) aging among all groups. Cyclic fatigue aging decreased the load-bearing capacity (p>0.05) of all tested prostheses, except for the experimental SFRC CAD/CAM and conventional laboratory composite IRFPDs (p>0.05). SEM images showed the ability of discontinuous short fibers in the experimental SFRC CAD/CAM composite to redirect and hinder crack propagation. CONCLUSION CAD/CAM-fabricated IRFPDs made of experimental SFRC blocks showed promising performance in clinical testing in terms of fracture behavior.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Knowledge on the effect of multiple firings on surface roughness and the flexural strength of different types of monolithic computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) ceramics is limited. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of multiple firings on the surface roughness and flexural strength of 4 different CAD-CAM ceramics after thermocycling. MATERIAL AND METHODS Four different CAD-CAM ceramics (Lava All Zirconia 3-mol yttria tetragonal zirconia polycrystal [3-YTZP] [Z], VITA SUPRINITY [S], IPS e.max CAD [EX], IPS Empress CAD [E]) (n=33) were wet-sectioned to form rectangular 18×4×1.2-mm specimens. After glaze application, the specimens were divided into 3 subgroups according to the number of firings (1, 2, and 4) (n=11). The specimens were thermocycled (10 000 cycles), and surface roughness and flexural strength values were measured (n=10). One additional specimen from each group was analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Data were analyzed by 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey honestly significance difference (HSD) test (α=.05). RESULTS According to the 2-way ANOVA, the material, number of firings, and the interaction between the material and number of firings affected the surface roughness (P<.001). For flexural strength, material (P<.001) and number of firings (P<.039) were found significant. Multiple firings (2 or 4 firings) affected the surface roughness of E (P<.001). Regardless of the number of firings, the Z material had the highest flexural strength (P<.001). Four firings affected the flexural strength values only for the Z material (P≤.005). CONCLUSIONS CAD-CAM ceramic type affected the surface roughness and flexural strength values. The surface roughness of E was lower when fired 2 or 4 times than when fired once. The flexural strength of Z was lower when fired 4 times than when fired once.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Ultrathin bonded posterior occlusal veneers represent a conservative alternative to traditional onlays and complete coverage crowns for the treatment of erosive dental wear. Data regarding the clinical performance of ceramic and composite resin ultrathin occlusal veneers are lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this prospective randomized clinical trial was to evaluate the influence of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) restorative material (ceramic versus composite resin) on the clinical performance of ultrathin occlusal veneers bonded to worn posterior teeth. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eleven participants (mean age, 30.4 years) had their posterior teeth restored with 24 ceramic (e.max CAD) and 36 composite resin (Lava Ultimate) ultrathin occlusal veneers. The material type was assigned randomly. The tooth preparations were trial restoration driven and included immediate dentin sealing (OptiBond FL). The intaglio surfaces of the ceramic restorations were etched with hydrofluoric acid and silanated, and the composite resins were airborne-particle abraded and silanated. The tooth preparations were airborne-particle abraded and etched with phosphoric acid before restoration insertion. All restorations were adhesively luted with preheated composite resin (Filtek Z100). The participants were evaluated according to the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria at baseline and then each year for up to 3 years. Survival rates were estimated with time to failure (primary outcome of interest) as the endpoint (scores 4 or 5). RESULTS No restorations were lost. Five partial failures, in the form of chipping (all scored 4), were observed in the composite resin group (Lava Ultimate). The Kaplan-Meier survival rates were 100% for ceramic and 84.7% (SE 0.065%) for composite resin. Differences between the 2 groups were not statistically significant (P=.124). In the surviving restorations, significant difference (P=.003) was found for surface roughness as restorations in the composite resin group experienced some surface degradation. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this medium-term clinical trial suggest that ceramic (e.max CAD) and composite resin (Lava Ultimate) CAD-CAM ultrathin occlusal veneers presented statistically comparable performance regardless of the minor partial failures (restorable chipping) observed in the composite resin group. Higher surface degradation was observed in the composite resin group.

Abstract
Background: We aim to evaluate the effect of surface conditioning, bonding agents and composite types on surface roughness (SR) and shear bond strength (SBS) of clear aligner composite attachments bonded to ceramics. Methods: One hundred and eighty IPS e.max CAD specimens were prepared. For SR, 60 specimens were divided according to surface conditioning (n = 15) into four groups: control, 9.6% hydrofluoric acid (HFA), 37% phosphoric acid (PhA), air abrasion (AA). SR was measured using a Profilometer and Atomic Force Microscopy. For SBS, 120 specimens were divided according to conditioning methods (n = 40) (9.6% HFA and 37% PhA or AA), then according to bonding agents (n = 20) (Assure universal bond (AUB) or Single bond universal (SBU)) and then according to composite type (n = 10): Filtek™ Z350 and Filtek™ Z350 XT flowable composite. SBS was measured using Instron testing machine. Descriptive and group comparison were calculated (p < 0.05). Results: AA had the highest SR, while the control had the lowest SR (p < 0.05). HFA had the highest, but insignificant SBS, followed by AA (p > 0.05). AUB had higher SBS than SBU (p < 0.001). Filtek™ Z350 produced higher SBS than Filtek™ Z350 XT flowable composite (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The combination of AA, AUB, and Filtek Z350 produced the highest SBS, followed by HFA, AUB, and Filtek Z350.

Abstract
PURPOSE To characterize the microstructure of three yttria partially stabilized zirconia ceramics and to compare their hardness, indentation fracture resistance (IFR), biaxial flexural strength (BFS), and fatigue flexural strength. MATERIALS AND METHODS Disc-shaped specimens were obtained from 3Y-TZP (Vita YZ HT), 4Y-PSZ (Vita YZ ST) and 5Y-PSZ (Vita YZ XT), following the ISO 6872/2015 guidelines for BFS testing (final dimensions of 12 mm in diameter, 0.7 and 1.2 ± 0.1 mm in thicknesses). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were performed, and mechanical properties were assessed by Vickers hardness, IFR, quasi-static BFS and fatigue tests. RESULTS All ceramics showed similar chemical compositions, but mainly differed in the amount of yttria, which was higher as the amount of cubic phase in the diffractogram (5Y-PSZ > 4Y-PSZ > 3Y-TZP). The 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ specimens showed surface defects under SEM, while 3Y-TZP exhibited greater grain uniformity on the surface. 5Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP presented the highest hardness values, while 3Y-TZP was higher than 4Y- and 5Y-PSZ with regard to the IFR. The 5Y-PSZ specimen (0.7 and 1.2 mm) showed the worst mechanical performance (fatigue BFS and cycles until failure), while 3Y-TZP and 4Y-PSZ presented statistically similar values, higher than 5Y-PSZ for both thicknesses (0.7 and 1.2 mm). Moreover, 3Y-TZP showed the highest (1.2 mm group) and the lowest (0.7 mm group) degradation percentage, and 5Y-PSZ had higher strength degradation than 4Y-PSZ group. CONCLUSION Despite the microstructural differences, 4Y-PSZ and 3Y-TZP had similar fatigue behavior regardless of thickness. 5Y-PSZ had the lowest mechanical performance.

Abstract
Staining and glazing procedures affects the microbial adherence and surface roughness. Stained and glazed surfaces result in higher wear than polished ceramic surfaces. The stain and glaze layer on the ceramic surface promotes lower strength value.
Purpose To simulate biodegradation and wear of stained and glazed CAD lithium disilicate ceramic, and evaluate their effects on the microbial adherence and mechanical and surface properties of lithium disilicate ceramic Materials and methods 160 lithium disilicate ceramic discs were fabricated and divided in eight groups according to manual stain and glaze application with a fine paint brush (without stain and glaze; with stain and glaze) and aging procedures (no aging; wear at 30 N load, 1.7 Hz, 3 × 105 cycles; biodegradation by exposure to microcosm biofilm; biodegradation + wear; biodegradation + wear). Profilometry was performed to determine the surface roughness and the wear consequences. Biaxial flexural strength test was performed, and a Streptococcus mutans adherence test was conducted to evaluate the number of colony forming units. Results Unaged samples with and without stain and glaze presented the lowest values of surface roughness (p < 0.001), but after aging (wear, biodegradation, or both), the samples in the stain and glaze groups were rougher than those in the no stain and glaze groups (p < 0.001). The stain and glaze groups showed the highest volume of wear after aging (p = 0.04), and had the lowest flexural strength values (p < 0.01), irrespective of the aging method. The aging method did not affect the flexural strength (p = 0.06). The number of colonies forming units was higher for biodegradation + no stain and glaze, biodegradation + wear + no stain and glaze, no aging + stain and glaze, biodegradation + stain and glaze, and biodegradation + wear + stain and glaze. The lowest values were observed for no aging + no stain and glaze. Conclusion The staining and glazing of lithium disilicate increased the surface wear and bacterial adherence, and decreased biaxial flexural strength of the material. When exposed to S. mutans, surface roughness increased, and biodegradation favored bacterial adherence.

Abstract
Objective
This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different types and restorative techniques of Class I composite restorations with a single loading force on stress distribution and cyclic loading force on microleakage formation.
Materials and Methods
Class I cavities were prepared in premolars with 4 mm depth and divided into six groups of different restorations with: (1) Filtek Z250; (2) a 3-mm-thick layer of Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable Restoration and covered with Z250; (3) a 1.5-mm-thick layer of flowable composite and covered with Z250; (4) lining all cavity with flowable composite and restored with Z250; (5) Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior Restoration; and (6) lining all cavity with flowable composite and restored with bulk-fill composite. The specimens with and without cyclic occlusal loading were subjected to microleakage observation. In addition, six different models of Class I restorations corresponding to the microleakage study were generated. Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to identify the stress distribution under a single loading force.
Statistical Analysis
Data were statistically analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and multiple comparison. The significance level set at 0.05.
Results
Cavity lining or restoration with flowable composite underneath conventional composite reduced stress on composite resin based on FEA (groups 2 and 3). The cyclic stress on composite increased microleakage. Restoration with flowable composite underneath conventional composite reduced the microleakage in Class I restoration (groups 2, 3, and 4).
Conclusion
The most effective cavity lining with a flowable composite underneath conventional composite restoration was stress reduction under loading force resulting in microleakage reduction.

Abstract
Gastric acid exposure produces tooth structure demineralization and dental ceramic degradation. The most affected patients are those who suffer from gastroesophageal reflux disease, bulimia nervosa, and pregnant women with prolonged severe nausea. In order to protect this kind of patient, the purpose of this study was to determine whether simulated gastric acid exposure leads to microstructural changes in surface topography, hardness, color changes, and translucency of some ceramic materials, which are already on the market. Forty disks (Triluxe Forte, Cerasmart, Enamic and Empress CAD) were analyzed before and after immersion in simulated gastric acid juice, in terms of microhardness, surface roughness, translucency, and surface morphology using scanning electron microscopy. Color change was assessed by using a spectrophotometer based on CIELab parameters and the results showed that, after exposure, ∆Eab remained under the threshold of acceptability and perceptibility. In terms of microhardness, Cerasmart is the only material that did not undergo changes after immersion. SEM images illustrated observable changes surface topography after acid exposure for all the tested materials. In conclusion, Triluxe Forte suffered the most important changes after simulated gastric acid juice exposure, and Cerasmart proved to be the least affected material.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of filler content, degradation media and time on the mechanical properties of different dental composites after in vitro aging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Specimens (1 mm3) of three commercially available composites (GrandioSO®, Arabesk Top®, Arabesk Flow®) with respect to their filler content were stored in artificial aging media: artificial saliva, ethanol (60%), lactic acid (pH 5) and citric acid (pH 5). Parameters (Vickers microhardness, compressive strength, elastic modulus, water sorption and solubility) were determined in their initial state (control group, n = 3 for microhardness, n = 5 for the other parameters) and after 14, 30, 90 and 180 days (n = 3 for microhardness, n = 5 for the other parameters for each composite group, time point and media). Specimens were also characterized with dynamic-mechanical-thermal analysis (compression tests, F = ± 7 N; f = 0.5 Hz, 1 Hz and 3.3 Hz; t = 0-170 °C). RESULTS Incorporation of fillers with more than 80 w% leads to significantly better mechanical properties under static and dynamic compression tests and a better water sorption behavior, even after chemical degradation. The influence of degradation media and time is of subordinate importance for chemical degradation. CONCLUSION Although the investigated composites have a similar matrix, they showed different degradation behavior. Since dentine and enamel occur only in small layer thickness, a test specimen geometry with very small dimensions is recommended for direct comparison. Moreover, the use of compression tests to determine the mechanical parameters for the development of structure-compatible and functionally adapted composites makes sense as an additional standard. Clinical relevance Preferential use of highly filled composites for occlusal fillings is recommended.

Abstract
This study evaluated the effectiveness of chemical-based adhesive techniques on promoting immediate and aged bond strength between zirconia and luting cement. A total of 128 discs of zirconia were divided into 4 groups (n = 32) according to the adhesive treatment: tribochemical silica-coating followed by silane (Silane Primer, Kerr) and bonding (Optibond FL, Kerr), Signum Zirconia Bond (Hereaus), Z-Prime Plus (Bisco), and All-Bond Universal (Bisco). Composite cylinders were cemented on the zirconia sample with Duo-Link Universal (Bisco). Eight specimens per group were subjected to 10,000 thermocycles and subsequently bond strength was tested with shear-bond strength test. ANOVA test showed that artificial aging significantly affected the bond strength to zirconia. Bonferroni test highlighted a significant influence of adhesive treatment (Signum) on bond strength after thermocycling. It was concluded that 10-MDP-based bonding systems showed no improvement in initial bond strength compared with tribochemical treatment. All chemical bonding techniques tested in this study were influenced by thermocycling.

Abstract
Cracked endodontically treated molars (ETMs) are commonly treated with full crowns. Less invasive techniques could include fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) base and adhesively bonded endocrowns. The purpose of this study was to assess the fatigue resistance of ETMs restored with CAD/CAM resin composite endocrowns and reinforced with different FRC bases. Cracks were simulated in fifty mandibular molars by cutting the teeth longitudinally and reassembling the two parts. After performing endodontic treatments and preparing cavities, teeth were restored in one of the following methods (n = 10). In Group 1, cavity floors were lined with 0.5 mm of flowable composite (Universal Injectable; GUI, shade A2). In Groups 2 and 3, the cavity floors were covered with one and three layers of FRC-net (ES Net) respectively, whereas in Groups 4 and 5 with 1 mm and 2 mm of flowable FRC-resin (EverX Flow Dentin; EXFD) respectively. Endocrowns (Cerasmart 270; CE, A2 HT) with 5 mm thickness were adhesively luted with preheated composite and all specimens were subjected to cyclic loading in water at 5 Hz, starting with a load of 600 N (5000 cycles), followed by stages of 1000, 1300, 1600, 1900, 2200 and 2500 at a maximum of 20 000 cycles each. Results were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the Log-Rank test (p = 0.05). The fatigue failure load of ES Net applied in three layers (1617 N ± 371) or in one layer (1499 N ± 306), as well as EXFD applied in 2 mm (1496 N ± 264) or in 1 mm (1434 N ± 372) did not differ significantly (p > 0.05). Control teeth fractured at 1255 N ± 350 (p > 0.05). In the fiber-reinforced groups, restorable fractures were observed in 50%-80%, with only 30% deemed restorable in the control group. The fractures originated mainly at the occlusal contact points and the main crack propagated in the corono-apical direction. No crack origin (primary or secondary) starting from the artificial pre-existing crack was observed in fractured specimens. FRC bases did not improve the fatigue resistance of cracked ETMs, but favorably influenced the failure mode.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To analyze the stress distribution and subsequent fracture resistance of human maxillary premolars with mesial-occlusal-distal (MOD) defects restored with different minimally invasive restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy non-carious human maxillary premolars were selected and divided into seven groups (n = 10). Ten teeth without further preparation served as control. The remaining teeth were endodontically treated and received three restorative patterns: inlays without cusp coverage (I), onlays with palatal coverage (O), overlays with both buccal and palatal coverage (Ov). Lithium disilicate glass ceramics (EM) and machinable composite resin (LU) were used for restoration. Specimens were tested under cycling loading with tongue direction of 45° for 1.2 × 106 cycles at a 50-N load and 2.0-Hz frequency. The survival time and two fracture mode classifications were assessed. Three-dimensional models of each group were designed. The magnitude and pattern of stresses were analyzed under the same condition of the in vitro test using finite element stress analysis. RESULTS Although the overlay model pattern produced more favorable stress distribution, three restorative patterns restored with the same material had no difference in survival curves (P > 0.05). Only the survival curve of the EM-Ov group had no statistical difference with that of the control group (P > 0.05). EM groups presented mainly interface adhesive failure, while LU groups were mainly material cohesive failure. CONCLUSION For the endodontically treated maxillary premolars with MOD defect, the lithium disilicate glass ceramic overlay pattern can reach the best restorative effect. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Comparing with restorative pattern, restorative material had a greater influence on the minimally invasive restoration of posterior teeth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of water storage on the quasi-static properties and cyclic fatigue behavior of four contemporary CAD/CAM resin composite materials. METHODS The CAD/CAM resin composites Grandio Blocs, LavaTM Ultimate, CerasmartTM and Brilliant Crios, as well as the direct resin composite Grandio SO, were evaluated. Rectangular plates were cut from the blocks or fabricated using a silicon mold to obtain specimens for fracture toughness (KIc, n = 10), biaxial strength (σ0, n = 30) and cyclic fatigue testing (n = 30). Half of the specimens was stored for 24 h in dry conditions and the other half was aged for 60 days in distilled water at 37 °C. KIc was determined using the Compact-Tension (C(T)) method and σ0 and cyclic fatigue were tested using the Ball-on-Three-Balls assembly. Additional disc-shaped specimens (n = 5) were produced to obtain water sorption curves of the materials. Weibull statistics and two-way ANOVA with Tukey's post-hoc test were used for data assessment. RESULTS The highest water sorption was observed for LavaTM Ultimate (42.6 μg/mm3), whereas Grandio SO displayed the lowest uptake (14 μg/mm3). A statistically significant drop in KIc and σ0 was measured for all materials after water storage, except for the σ0 of CerasmartTM. Water ageing had a dissimilar effect on the cyclic fatigue behavior, increasing the slow crack growth susceptibility of LavaTM Ultimate, but decreasing it for CerasmartTM and Brilliant Crios. SIGNIFICANCE Contemporary CAD/CAM resin composites are susceptible to water driven degradative processes, although differences in filler content and resin matrix constitution play an important role in how it impacts their mechanical properties.

Abstract
PURPOSE To test if resin CAD/CAM materials should be considered for zirconia implants and how their mechanical properties affect the fracture load. METHODS Fracture load of molar crowns of CAD/CAM materials (VITA CAD-Temp [CT], Cerasmart [CS], Lava Ultimate [LU], Pekkton Ivory [PK]) on zirconia implants (ceramic.implant, 4.0 mm) fixed either with no cement, temporary cement (Harvard Implant semi-permanent [HIS]), self-adhesive (VITA Adiva S-Cem [VAS]) or either one of two adhesive cements (Multilink Automix [MLA], VITA Adiva F-Cem [VAF]) was analyzed. The restorative materials were characterized by their flexural strength, fracture toughness, elemental composition and organic/inorganic ratio while compressive strength of the cements was measured. RESULTS For the fracture load significantly highest mean values were fo und overall for PK (2921 ±300 N) > LU (2017 ±499 N) > CS (1463 ±367 N) = CT (1451 ±327 N) (p > 0.05). When analyzing the effect of the cement on the fracture load the overall ranking was VAF (2245 ±650 N) ≥ MLA (2188 ±708 N) ≥ VAS (2017 ±563 N) > HIS (1757 ±668 N) = no cement (1595 ±757 N) (p <0.05), meaning fracture load increased with the compressive strength of the cements. Additionally, a linear trend was found between the fracture load and the fracture toughness of the restorative materials. CONCLUSIONS All restorative materials exhibited fracture load values similar or higher than lithium disilicate tested previously. Fracture load of CT, CS and LU can be significantly increased when an adhesive cement with a high compressive strength is used.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Here we used 3D finite element analysis (FEA) to analyze and directly compare stress distribution and crack propagation in identical cracked tooth models after treatment with various materials and designs. METHODS A 3D model of a cracked tooth was generated. We then applied eight restoration models, comprising combinations of three kinds of restoration designs (inlay, onlay, and crown) and four types of restoration materials (direct composite resin, indirect composite resin, ceramic, and gold). A 1000-N occlusal load was applied on the three reference points of the ball-shaped part in the direction of the longitudinal axis, causing crack line separation in the buccolingual direction. Stress distribution was analyzed on the occlusal surface, bottom level of the restoration, and mesiodistal longitudinal section. The stress on the lower margin of the crack surface was measured at 15 points on each model. RESULTS Ceramic inlay and onlay showed stress concentration at the restoration bottom, and low stress on the lower margin of the crack surface. Direct and indirect resin restorations exhibited low stress on the restoration bottom, and high stress on the proximal end of the lower margin of the crack surface. With a resin-unfilled gold crown, stress was concentrated on the crown bottom and the lower margin of the crack surface. Direct resin filling inside the gold crown yielded significantly decreased stress on both areas. SIGNIFICANCE Our results suggest that inlay and onlay ceramic restorations, and gold crown with resin filling inside, are advantageous methods for preventing further crack propagation.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of resin-coating using one-bottle adhesives on the bond strength of resin cements in single-visit and multiple-visit treatments. Three one-bottle adhesives were used for resin-coating and/or pre-treatment adhesives prior to cementation, in conjunction with resin cements from the same manufacturers: Clearfil Universal Bond Quick with Panavia V5 (UBQ/Pv5), Scotchbond Universal Adhesive with RelyX Ultimate (SBU/RxU), and Optibond All-in-one with NX3 Nexus (OP/NX3). Bovine dentin surfaces were left uncoated or resin-coated. After 1-h water storage (single-visit) or 1-week water storage with a non-eugenol temporary cement (multiple-visit), a CAD/CAM resin block was cemented to uncoated or resin-coated dentin surfaces. Microtensile bond strengths (µTBSs) were measured and statistically analyzed (α=0.05). Application of resin-coating improved µTBSs. The multiple-visit group exhibited lower values of µTBS than the single-visit group. Selection of the materials affected µTBSs. Resin-coating and single-visit treatment are desirable for CAD/CAM resin composite restorations.

Abstract
Objective: This study investigates the reliability of different flexural tests such as three-point-bending, four-point bending, and biaxial tests, in strengthening the dental pressed ceramics (DPCs) frequently used in clinical applications. Methods: The correlations between the three types of bending tests for DPCs were investigated. Plate-shaped specimens for the three-point and four-point bending tests and a disc-shaped specimen for the biaxial bending test were prepared. Each bending test was conducted using a universal testing machine. Results: The results for six DPCs showed that the flexural strength in descending order were the three-point flexural strength, biaxial flexural strength, and four-point flexural strength, respectively. Then, a regression analysis showed a strong correlation between each of the three test methods, with the combination of four-point and biaxial flexural strength showing the highest values. The biaxial flexural strength was not significantly different in the Weibull coefficient (m) compared to the other tests, with the narrowest range considering the 95% interval. The biaxial bending test was found to be suitable for materials with small plastic deformation from the yield point to the breaking point, such as DPCs.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Although contemporary analytical methods are available for application to data which exhibit a lack of equality of variances or a lack of normality in the error distribution, little guidance is provided for selecting the methods of data handling and analysis which best fit color difference data for stained esthetic materials. PURPOSE The purposes of this in vitro study were to apply information criteria of analysis of variance (ANOVA) methods of differing error distributions and covariance structures when analyzing color differences to determine the degree of alienation among 3 Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) color difference formulae to assess the linearity of relationships among these formulae and to independently assess differences among various computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture (CAD-CAM) materials in any color change after common forms of staining over time. MATERIAL AND METHODS Hybrid ceramic, resin nanoceramic, feldspathic-ceramic, and lithium-disilicate ceramic specimens (N=128) were subjected to staining from water, tea, coffee, and red wine over 1, 7, and 30 days, with color differences calculated from baseline. Akaike information criteria (AIC) and Bayesian information criteria (BIC) values were determined for Gaussian and lognormal error distributions at covariance structures of standard variance components and compound-symmetry. The analysis of variance used to analyze any significant effects on these color differences was the one with the lowest AIC and BIC values. Then, for each solution, day, and CIE color difference formula, any significant difference in the color differences between all pairs of materials was found by Bonferroni-corrected Student t tests. Those statistically significant pairwise comparisons where the larger of the color differences met or exceeded the acceptability threshold were labeled as statistically and visually noteworthy. RESULTS For this color difference data set, the lognormal error distribution and the covariance structure of compound symmetry provided the best AIC and BIC. Because the interaction between material, solution, and day was statistically significant (P<.001), pairwise comparisons were made between all pairs of materials for each level of solution and day studied. Noteworthy differences were identified, where hybrid ceramic and resin nanoceramic each had color changes after staining in coffee and red wine that were greater than each of feldspathic-ceramic and lithium-disilicate ceramic. CONCLUSIONS AIC and BIC values evaluate distinctively the Gaussian and lognormal error distributions when analyzing highly varying color differences. Although there is a high linear correlation between the 3 color difference formulae studied, each formula is unique, and each represents a different assessment of the perceived color difference. CAD-CAM materials, staining liquids, and time points affected the notable color changes.

Step-stress vs. staircase fatigue tests to evaluate the effect of intaglio adjustment on the fatigue behavior of simplified lithium disilicate glass-ceramic restorations. Abstract
The aim of the study was to compare the outcomes for the fatigue mechanical behavior of bonded simplified lithium disilicate restorations, with and without an internal adjustment by grinding with diamond bur in running two fatigue tests: Staircase and Step-stress testing approaches. Ceramic discs (IPS e.max CAD) were prepared (Ø = 10 mm; thickness = 1.0 mm), submitted to an in-lab simulation of CAD/CAM milling (#60 SiC paper) and allocated into 2 groups according to the internal adjustment by grinding of the cementation surface: no adjustment (CTRL); or grinding with a coarse diamond bur (GR). Adhesive cementation (Multilink N) was performed onto epoxy resin discs (Ø = 10 mm; thickness = 2 mm) after ceramic/epoxy surface treatments. The cemented assemblies of each group were randomly assigned into 2 subgroups considering two fatigue tests (n = 15): Staircase - SC (250,000 cycles; 20 Hz), or Step-stress - SS (10,000 cycles per step; 20 Hz). Roughness, topographic and fractographic analyses were additionally performed. Statistical analyses were carried out using the Dixon and Mood method for Staircase data, and Kaplan-Meier and Mantel-Cox (log-rank) tests for Step-stress data. Ceramic restorations having its intaglio surface ground (GR group: SC test = 306.67 N; SS test = 646.67 N) presented lower fatigue failure load (FFL) values than the CTRL group (SC test = 879.28 N; SS test = 1090.00 N), regardless of the fatigue testing approach. The percentage of mean FFL decrease comparing the CTRL to GR group was higher for SC (65.1%) than the SS (40.7%) approach. However, a different total number of cycles was applied for each method. Both fatigue tests were able to detect the negative effect of internal adjustments of lithium disilicate glass-ceramic simplified restorations on their mechanical behavior. Therefore, both methods can be applied for similar evaluations (fatigue testing for ceramic restorations).

Abstract
PURPOSE This in vitro study aimed to evaluate the influence of fatigue loading on fracture resistance of endodontically treated molars restored with endocrowns using different machinable blocks. METHODS Endodontically treated mandibular first molars were prepared using a standardized method. Specimens were divided into 4 groups (n = 10).Anatomically shaped endocrowns groups were manufactured using VITA ENAMIC (VE) and KATANA Zirconia (KZ). Layered endocrowns groups were manufactured using IPS e.max CAD (EM) and BioHPP (BH). Half of the specimens of each group were subjected to fracture resistance test, while the other half were subjected to thermocycling and chewing simulation. After fatigue loading, specimens were loaded until failure. Specimens were examined using stereomicroscopy. Data were analyzed using ANOVA analysis of variance and Bonferroni post hoc test (α=0.05). RESULTS KZ group had the highest initial fracture resistance value (1810.20± 119.56 N) and BH had the lowest value (579.50± 76.15 N). The reduction of fracture resistance after fatigue loading was significant for KZ group (1588.30±216.25 N) and BH group (502.60±11.53 N) and non-significant to VE group (1101.70±77.05 N) and EM group (1112.10±74.12 N). Failure modes of KZ and EM groups showed high percentage of non-restorable fractures, while VE and BH groups showed high percentage of restorable fractures. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this study, the following can be concluded: Poly infiltrated ceramics should be considered as a proper material to be used as an endocrown material because of its ability to be restorable if failure occurred.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of the study was to compare the mvM stresses occurring in inlays, onlays and endocrowns made from different materials and their bonding with molars in a computer simulation of mastication. METHODS The study was conducted using the finite elements method with contact elements. Sixteen 3D first molar models were created of a intact tooth - T; a tooth with a ceramic inlay - IN; a tooth with an onlay - ON; and a tooth with an endocrown - EN. The restorations were made of: Comp - resin nanoceramic; Hc - hybrid ceramic; Le - leucite ceramic; Dlit - lithium disilicate; and Zr - zirconia. Computer simulations of mastication were performed. The equivalent stresses according to the modified von Mises criterion (mvM) were calculated in model materials and contact stresses at the interface cement-dental tissue around the examined restorations. RESULTS The highest equivalent mvM stresses were concentrated in buccal margins of inlays. The mvM stresses recorded in onlays were 1.6-5 times lower than those found in inlays, while in endocrowns they were 2.3-6.5 times lower. Around the onlays and endocrowns, in tooth structures and luting cement, mvM stresses were significantly lower compared to teeth restored with inlays. The tensile and shear contact stresses between inlays and teeth were several times lower than under another restorations. The highest stresses (58.5MPa) occurred in the zirconia inlay. The stresses observed in the enamel of a tooth restored with an INZr inlay were half those noted in INComp, and a third of those observed in cement. Tensile contact stresses at the interface between the INZr inlay and dental tissue were 4.5 times lower than in the INComp, and the shear stresses were more than 7 times lower. SIGNIFICANCE The highest values and unfavorable of stress levels occurred in teeth restored with inlays. Cavities MOD in molars should be reconstructed with cusp-covering restorations. The endocrown in molars should withstand physiological loading. The higher the modulus of elasticity of the restoration material, the higher the stresses in the restorations, while the lower stresses were observed in the tooth structures, luting cement and at the interface between the restoration and the dental tissue. Ceramic restorations should provide better protection and marginal seal of the reconstructed tooth than composite ones.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Monolithic restorations facilitate computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) processability and provide thin-walled restorations, which require less tooth reduction. For the long-term success of these restorations, their durable sealing is important. However, data in this regard are sparse. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the microleakage of monolithic complete crowns made from current CAD-CAM materials after mastication simulation. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-four identical test specimens (crown and tooth) were milled based on corresponding standard tessellation language data sets: one for the crowns and another for the human molar teeth. Four CAD-CAM restoration materials were investigated: 2 polymer-containing materials, Brilliant Crios (BC) and Vita Enamic (VE), and 2 zirconia materials, ultra-high-translucent Nacera Pearl Q³ Multi-Shade (ultraHT) and high-translucent Nacera Pearl Multi-Shade (HT). The crowns were adhesively luted to the CAD-CAM milled human molars with 1 of 3 luting systems: OneCoat7Universal and DuoCem (BC); A.R.T.Bond and DuoCement (VE); or EDPrimer/Panavia F2.0 (ultraHT and HT). The specimens were divided in 2 subgroups, and 2 different mastication simulations were applied: normal function (NF) and bruxism (B). A dye penetration test was used to detect microleakage, and the specimens were sectioned. A digital microscope (Zeiss) was used for analysis and to calculate the percentage of leakage in relation to the height of the tooth. Data were subjected to the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests (α=.05). RESULTS Microleakage was identified in all groups. VE reported the highest leakage with a mean of 13.0%, followed by ultraHT (4.8%), HT (3.6%), and BC (3.0%). No significant difference was detected between the 2 simulation programs (normal function and bruxism). However, VE and the zirconia group HT exhibited a significant difference (P<.014), whereas no significant difference was noted among the zirconia groups or the polymer-containing groups BC and VE. CONCLUSIONS Thin-walled restorations made of CAD-CAM composite resin and zirconia exhibited reduced microleakage compared with the polymer-containing ceramic. Thus, from the specific viewpoint of microleakage, CAD-CAM composite resins and zirconia seem to be suitable materials for thin-walled complete crowns.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the composition, flexural strength and fatigue behaviour of lithium disilicate ceramic (LD) after repeated firings and different staining techniques. METHODS LD discs were fabricated and divided according to number of firing cycles and staining technique: CO - control, discs were crystallized (850°C/10min); SC - single-step characterization - crystallization and staining (applied with a thin brush) were performed in a single step with one firing cycle (850°C/10min); and DC - double-step characterization - crystallization firing cycle was performed first (850°C/10min), followed by staining firing cycle (770°C/90s). Specimens were fired two, four or six times (one crystallization firing cycle and one, three or five staining firing cycles), resulting into 9 groups (n=30): COII, COIV, COVI, SCII, SCIV, SCVI, DCII, DCIV and DCVI. The composition of the specimens was investigated (EDS, XRD, Raman spectroscopy), and the biaxial flexural strength (n=10) and staircase tests (n=20, 5×104 cycles, 5Hz) were performed. Data were subjected to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α=0.05). RESULTS EDS and XRD revealed amorphous content for stained groups. Biaxial flexural strength was not affected by repeated firings in any group, but stained groups presented lower flexural strength than control groups (p=0.001). The fatigue limit results decreased in all groups compared to flexural strength. SC groups showed similar (SCII and SCIV) or even higher fatigue limits (SCVI) than the control groups, and DC showed the lowest fatigue limit values. SEM and Raman suggested that the interfaces between staining and the LD showed only an overlap for the DC groups, whereas for the SC it was suggested an interaction between the stain and the LD. SIGNIFICANCE Repeated firings did not result in decreased lithium disilicate flexural strength.Staining affected flexural strength and also resulted in increased amorphous content in the characterized specimens. Single-step staining resulted in the highest fatigue limit.

Abstract
AbstractLittle information is available about the optical behavior of glass ceramics and indirect resin composites. This study aimed to evaluate if an indirect resin composite can present similar behavior of color stability and translucency to a glass ceramic after polishing and aging in staining beverage. Specimens of a dental ceramic (IPS e.max Ceram) and an indirect resin composite (SR Adoro) were made. Half the specimens of each material were polished with disc-shaped tips. Groups were divided according to aging media: distilled water or immersion in red wine for 20 min/day during 30 days. CIE L*a*b* coordinates were measured with a spectrophotometer at baseline and after 30 days of aging. Color change was calculated by CIEDE2000 and translucency was calculated by contrast ratio (CR). Statistical analysis were performed with ANOVA and Tukey tests. Aging in red wine caused perceptible color change in both materials. Polishing only increased color change of indirect composite when aged in red wine. Ceramic groups showed greater opacity than the composite in all measurements. The indirect composite remained more translucent and results showed that it is capable of presenting color stability similar to a ceramic. However, polishing seems to increase its color change. ResumoPouca informação comparando o comportamento óptico de cerâmicas vítreas e resinas compostas indiretas estão disponíveis na literatura. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar se uma resina composta indireta pode apresentar comportamento semelhante a uma cerâmica vítrea em relação à estabilidade de cor e translucidez após polimento e envelhecimento em meio altamente pigmentante. Espécimes de uma cerâmica vítrea (IPS e.max Ceram) e uma resina composta indireta (SR Adoro) foram preparados. Metade dos espécimes de cada material foram polidas com pontas de polimento. Os grupos foram divididos conforme o meio de armazenamento: água destilada ou vinho tinto por 20 min/dia durante 30 dias. As coordenadas CIEL*a*b* foram medidas com espectrofotômetro previamente e após os 30 dias de armazenamento. A alteração de cor foi calculada pela equação CIEDE2000 e a translucidez foi calculada por razão de contraste. A análise estatística foi realizada pelos testes ANOVA e teste de Tukey. O armazenamento em vinho levou a uma alteração de cor perceptível nos dois materiais. O polimento apenas causou alteração de cor na resina composta indireta quando imersa em vinho tinto. A resina composta indireta manteve-se mais translúcida e os resultados mostraram que esse material é capaz de apresentar estabilidade de cor semelhante à cerâmica. Abstract
Background The introduction of the new generation of particle-filled and high strength ceramics, hybrid composites and technopolymers in the last decade has offered an extensive palette of dental materials broadening the clinical indications in fixed prosthodontics, in the light of minimally invasive dentistry dictates. Moreover, last years have seen a dramatic increase in the patients’ demand for non-metallic materials, sometimes induced by metal-phobia or alleged allergies. Therefore, the attention of scientific research has been progressively focusing on such materials, particularly on lithium disilicate and zirconia, in order to shed light on properties, indications and limitations of the new protagonists of the prosthetic scene. Methods This article is aimed at providing a narrative review regarding the state-of-the-art in the field of these popular ceramic materials, as to their physical-chemical, mechanical and optical properties, as well as to the proper dental applications, by means of scientific literature analysis and with reference to the authors’ clinical experience. Results A huge amount of data, sometimes conflicting, is available today. Both in vitro and in vivo studies pointed out the outstanding peculiarities of lithium disilicate and zirconia: unparalleled optical and esthetic properties, together with high biocompatibility, high mechanical resistance, reduced thickness and favorable wear behavior have been increasingly orientating the clinicians’ choice toward such ceramics. Conclusions The noticeable properties and versatility make lithium disilicate and zirconia materials of choice for modern prosthetic dentistry, requiring high esthetic and mechanical performances combined with a minimal invasive approach, so that the utilization of such metal-free ceramics has become more and more widespread over time.
