Abstract
BACKGROUND Tooth- and implant-supported fixed dental prostheses are well-documented and aesthetic treatment alternatives, and after a comprehensive periodontal treatment, a protocol with a good long-term prognosis if the maintenance program is strictly followed. AIM To reexamine a pre-existing patient cohort in order to obtain estimated long-term survival and complication outcomes of fixed dental prostheses. MATERIALS AND METHODS For this study, patients treated with fixed dental prostheses between 1978 and 2002 were reexamined between 2019 and 2020. The restorations were divided in single crowns and fixed dental prostheses supported by teeth (TSC, FPTDP) and implants (ISC, FPIDP). Survival and complication rates were obtained. Kaplan-Meier functions were used to model complication probabilities, and average hazard ratios of different strata were compared using weighted Cox regression. RESULTS The mean observation time of 40 patients and 223 reconstructions was 20.3 (±9.7, 1.2-36.2) years. The estimated survival rates were 84% (CI: 77%-92%) for TSC, 63% (CI: 51%-79%) for FPTDP, 87% (CI: 71%-100%) for ISC, and 64% (CI: 34%-100%) for FPIDP after 25 years. Biological complications included carious lesions (10.6%), periodontitis (7.9%), and peri-implantitis (6.8%). Technical complications included chipping (20.2%) and loss of retention (10.8%). CONCLUSION Biological complications lead to abutment loss in more than two-thirds of cases, regardless of the type of abutment (tooth or implant). Technical complications are less associated with abutment loss than biological complications.

Abstract
Restorative material selection has become increasingly challenging due to the speed of new developments in the field of dental material science. The present narrative review gives an overview of the current indications for implant abutments and restoration materials for provisional and definitive implant-supported fixed dental prostheses in partially edentulous patients. For single implant restorations, titanium base abutments for crowns are suggested as an alternative to the conventional stock- and customized abutments made out of metal or zirconia. They combine the mechanical stability of a metallic connection with the esthetic potential of ceramics. For multiple-unit restorations, conical titanium bases especially designed for bridges are recommended, to compensate for deviating implant insertion axes and angulations. Even though titanium base abutments with different geometries and heights are available, certain clinical scenarios still benefit from customized titanium abutments. Indications for the definitive material in fixed implant restorations depend on the region of tooth replacement. In the posterior (not esthetically critical) zone, ceramics such as zirconia (3-5-Ymol%) and lithium-disilicate are recommended to be used in a monolithic fashion. In the anterior sector, ceramic restorations may be buccally micro-veneered for an optimal esthetic appearance. Lithium-disilicate is only recommended for single-crowns, while zirconia (3-5-Ymol%) is also recommended for multiple-unit and cantilever restorations. Attention must be given to the specific mechanical properties of different types of zirconia, as some feature reduced mechanical strengths and are therefore not indicated for all regions and restoration span lengths. Metal-ceramics remain an option, especially for cantilever restorations.

Abstract
Objective: To determine the effect of grit-blasting before and after sintering on the surface roughness of zirconia and the micro-tensile bond strength of a pressable veneering ceramic to zirconia. Methods: Pre-sintered zirconia blocks (IPS e.max ZirCAD, Ivoclar) were divided into four test groups of three specimens each and a control group ('CTR'; no surface treatment). Pre-S-30, Pre-S-50, and Pre-S-110 were grit-blasted with 30-µm SiO2-coated Al2O3, 50-µm Al2O3 and 110-µm Al2O3 particles, respectively, before sintering. Post-S-30 was grit-blasted with 30-µm SiO2-coated Al2O3 after sintering. For each treatment, the surface roughness was measured (Ra, Perthometer M4P, Mahr Perthen). After sintering the zirconia blocks, a liner was applied and a pressable ceramic (IPS e.max ZirPress, Ivoclar) was heat-pressed. Sixteen microbars were obtained from each block and submitted to micro-tensile bond-strength (µTBS) testing. Data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA. Any correlation between Ra and µTBS was evaluated (Sperman test). Results: Grit-blasting before sintering with 110-µm Al2O3 (RaPre-S-110 = 3.4 ± 0.4 µm), 50-µm Al2O3 (RaPre-S-50 = 2.3 ± 0.5 µm), and 30-µm SiO2-coated Al2O3 (RaPre-S-30 = 1.2 ± 0.2 µm) resulted in significantly higher roughness than grit-blasting after sintering with 30-µm SiO2-coated Al2O3 (RaPost-S-30 = 0.5 ± 0.1 µm). The highest µTBS was measured when the sintered zirconia was grit-blasted with 30-μm SiO2-coated Al2O3 (µTBSPost-S-30 = 28.5 ± 12.6 MPa), which was significantly different from that of specimens that were grit-blasted before sintering (µTBSPre-S-30 = 21.8 ± 10.4; µTBSPre-S-50 = 24.1 ± 12.6; µTBSPre-S-110 = 26.4 ± 14.1) or were not grit-blasted (µTBSCTR = 20.2 ± 11.2). Conclusions: Grit-blasting zirconia before sintering enhanced the surface roughness proportionally to the particle size of the sand used. Grit-blasting with 30-µm SiO2-coated Al2O3 after sintering improved bonding of the veneering ceramic to zirconia. Clinical Significance: As grit-blasting with 30-µm SiO2-coated Al2O3 after sintering improved bonding of the veneering ceramic to zirconia, it may reduce veneering ceramic fractures/chipping.

Abstract
Background/purpose Retainer debonding of resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) is one of the major reasons for their lower survival rates than fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) with full-coverage crowns. Recent advances in milling technology have enabled the fabrication of RBFDPs with complex retainers (D-shaped designs). This study aimed to assess the marginal fit and retention force of zirconia RBFDPs with inlay-, L-, and D-shaped designs to clarify their clinical applications. Materials and methods Three abutment teeth models without maxillary second premolars were created using inlay-, L-, and D-shaped retainer designs. The zirconia RBFDPs were designed and fabricated according to the manufacturer's instructions (n = 10). The marginal gap was measured using the silicone replica technique. Zirconia frameworks were bonded to the abutment teeth using resin cement. Tensile test was conducted after thermal cycling and dynamic loading tests. The loads during debonding or fracture were recorded. The failure pattern was analyzed by observing the fracture surface using a scanning electron microscope. Results D-shaped RBFDPs showed a significantly larger marginal gap than inlay- and L-shaped RBFDPs (P < 0.05). However, the mean marginal values were clinically acceptable (<120 μm). The D-shaped model exhibited the highest tensile strength in the tensile tests. The inlay-shaped and most of the D-shaped RBFDPs experienced debonding with cohesive failure, whereas the L-shaped RBFDPs showed fractures near the connector. Conclusion The D-shaped retainer design was superior to the inlay- and L-shaped designs with respect to the inhibition of retainer debonding. However, the marginal fitness needs to be improved.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Clinical data on all-ceramic screw-retained implant crowns (SICs) luted on titanium base abutments (TBAs) over more than 3 years are sparse. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical performance and potential risk factors for these restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS Analysis took place based on the medical patient-records of three dental offices. Implant survival and prosthetic complications over time were evaluated. The study included SICs in premolar and molar regions made from monolithic lithium disilicate ceramic (M_LiDi) or veneered zirconia (V_ZiO) luted on a TBA documented over an observation time of at least 3 years. Survival and complication rates were calculated and compared by a log-rank test. Cox-Regressions were used to check potential predictors for the survival (p < .05). RESULTS Six hundred and one crowns out of 371 patients met the inclusion criteria and follow-up period was between 3.0 and 12.9 (mean: 6.4 (SD: 2.1)) years. Over time, six implants had to be removed and 16 restorations had to be refabricated. The estimated survival rates over 10 years were 93.5% for M_LiDi and 95.9% for V_ZiO and did not differ significantly among each other (p = .80). However, V_ZiO showed significantly higher complication rates (p = .003). Material selection, sex, age, and implant diameter did not affect the survival of investigated SICs but crown height influences significantly the survival rate (hazard ratio, HR = 1.26 (95%CI: 1.08, 1.49); p = .043). CONCLUSIONS Screw-retained SICs luted on TBAs that were fabricated from monolithic lithium disilicate ceramic or veneered zirconia showed reliable and similar survival rates. Increasing crown heights reduced survival over the years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this review was to compare various types of restorations used in children and young adults affected with amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) to determine the most effective restorative treatment. METHODS This systematic review included randomized controlled trials, retrospective and prospective cohorts conducted on children and young adults diagnosed with amelogenesis imperfecta and written in French or English. A systematic search was conducted using four databases, namely Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE via PubMed, Science Direct and Scopus, using a selection of MeSH terms: "Amelogenesis Imperfecta," "Therapeutics," "Treatment Outcome," "Adult, young," "Child," "Dental Restoration, Permanent," "Dental Restoration, Temporary," and "Esthetics, Dental." RESULTS Out of 138 articles identified in the initial search, four articles met all the inclusion criteria. The results showed that ceramic restorations had better quality scores and longevity compared to other restorations. CONCLUSION Ceramic restorations could be considered the restorative treatment modality of choice for AI-affected children and young adults. However, more high-quality clinical trials involving young patients affected with AI are required to evaluate and compare the outcomes of different restorative approaches. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Young patients affected with amelogenesis imperfecta usually suffer from low self-esteem, psychological problems and social avoidance, caused by the alteration of teeth such as discoloration, sensitivity, fractures and reduced size. For the dentist, selecting the appropriate restorative treatment for AI in young patients could be a veritable challenge. Therefore, it is important to have an evidence-based modality. For this reason, in this review, the different restorative approaches used in AI-affected young patients were compared to recommend the most effective treatment.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Loss of retention is a clinical complication for fixed partial dentures (FPDs). However, a method sensitive enough to measure the early retention loss of FPDs is lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro and finite element analysis (FEA) study was to determine whether resonance frequency analysis (RFA) with a newly developed system can detect lack of FPD retention caused by cement loss. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two evaluation methods were used: RFA of an in vitro model of a 3-unit FPD from the second premolar to the second molar and FEA by using a simplified model. The in vitro model was used to evaluate 4 connecting conditions: both crowns cemented, only the premolar crown cemented, only the molar crown cemented, and both crowns uncemented. Tapping stimulation (16 impulsive forces, 4 Hz) was directly applied to the buccal side of the second molar or the second premolar, and an attached 3D accelerometer sensor was used to record the resonance frequency (RF) of the tapped tooth. The amplitude, frequency, Q-value, and total area under the curve (AUC) of the RF values in the buccolingual direction were compared between connecting conditions. The FEA was done by using a simplified model of a 3-unit FPD with similar connecting conditions as the in vitro model study, and the RF amplitude and frequency of each tooth were calculated. Statistical evaluation included 1-way analysis of variance and the Tukey HSD test to compare the differences among each connecting condition under each parameter for measurement sites on the molar and the premolar, respectively (α=.05). RESULTS For both the molar and premolar measurements in both the in vitro and FEA models, when the measurement site was on the uncemented tooth, the amplitude of RF-1 increased, the Q-value of RF-2 decreased, and the area under the curve increased (P<.05). CONCLUSIONS The same 3 trends found between the measurement sites of the in vitro study and FEA indicated that RFA may be useful for detecting an FPD with loosening caused by cement loss, even partial cement loss.

Abstract
The use of implants to replace missing teeth is now commonplace and practised by clinicians worldwide in both general and specialist practice. There is an abundance of evidence on the general success of implant treatment. As well as reviewing the history of dental implants, this narrative review will discuss the merits and successful placement of tissue-level verses bone-level implants. Furthermore, the article will evaluate the concept and benefits of platform switching for implant treatment. Finally, with the increased placement of implants, this narrative paper will review how different titanium surfaces impact on the risk of peri-implantitis.

Abstract
Background/purpose Nowadays, zirconia-based framework has been used for longspan or full-arch fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of pontic distribution on marginal and internal gaps of five-unit anterior zirconiabased DPs. Materials and methods Right maxillary central incisor and second premolar were selected as terminal abutments and three different edentulous conditions with one nonterminal abutment were simulated. Marginal and internal gaps in each zirconia-based samples(n = 10) were examined by computer-aided replica technique. Five regions, including marginal gaps at mesial or distal finishing line, internal gaps at the mesial or distal axial wall, and occlusal surface, were statistically analyzed (α = .05). Results Most of marginal gaps and internal gaps at axial wall were clinically acceptable, but larger at occlusal surface. For the three experimental groups, clinically accepted percentage with qualified gaps were less than 30%.There were statistical differences at axial wall over pontic side and marginal gaps over non-pontic side between groups (P<0.05). For sum of gaps of all abutments in each group, statistical differences were found at marginal and axial wall (P < 0.05). As for those on terminal and non-terminal abutments, statistical differences were found on second premolar (P < 0.05). Conclusion Except for occlusal surface, the overall marginal gaps and internal gaps at axial wall of five-unit anterior zirconia-based FDPs with different pontic distribution were clinically acceptable. However, the percentage with qualified gaps were low (<30%). Greater gaps were noted when adjacent pontic existed. Different pontic size and distribution with curvature had an influence on the gaps.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the effects of surface treatment on the fracture strength of porcelain-veneered zirconia. Highly translucent 4 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia disks (KATANA HT, Kuraray Noritake Dental) were divided into three surface-treatment groups: 1)as-sintered, 2) alumina sandblasted, and 3) ground. Crystallographic and surface-roughness analyses were conducted for each group. Veneering ceramics (Cerabien ZR, Kuraray Noritake Dental) were applied to the zirconia surfaces. The fracture strengths of the porcelain-veneered zirconia disks were measured using biaxial flexural-strength tests. Crystallographic analysis revealed that grinding and sandblasting increased the fractions of the monoclinic and rhombohedral zirconia phases. The ground specimens had a higher surface roughness than the sandblasted specimens. Weibull analysis showed no significant differences in biaxial flexural strength among the three groups. The results suggest that these surface treatments do not affect the fracture strength of porcelain-veneered zirconia.

Abstract
This study aimed to develop a recycling process for the remnants of milled 3Y-TZP and enhance their properties using glass infiltration. 3Y-TZP powder was gathered from the vacuum system of CAD-CAM milling equipment, calcined and sieved (x < 75 μm). One hundred twenty discs were fabricated and pre-sintered at 1000 °C/h. These specimens were then divided into four groups, categorized by glass infiltration (non-infiltrated [Zr] or glass-infiltrated [Zr-G]) and sintering temperature (1450 °C [Zr-1450] or 1550 °C [Zr-1550]/2h). After sintering, the specimens were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), relative density measurement, and scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). The biaxial flexural strength test was performed according to the ISO 6872 and followed by fractographic analysis. Subsequent results were analyzed using Weibull statistics. Relative density values of the sintered specimens from Zr-1450 and Zr-1550 groups were 86.7 ± 1.5% and 92.2 ± 1.7%, respectively. Particle size distribution revealed particles within the range of 0.1-100 μm. XRD analysis highlighted the presence of the ZrO2-tetragonal in both the Zr-1450 and Zr-1550 groups. Glass infiltration, however, led to the formation of the ZrO2-monoclinic of 9.84% (Zr-1450-G) and 18.34% (Zr-1550-G). SEM micrographs demonstrated similar microstructural characteristics for Zr-1450 and Zr-1550, whereas the glass-infiltrated groups exhibited comparable infiltration patterns. The highest characteristic strength was observed in the glass-infiltrated groups. Fractographic analyses suggested that fracture origins were related to defects on the tensile side, which propagated to the compression side of the samples. Both the sintering temperature and glass infiltration significantly influenced the mechanical properties of the 3Y-TZP recycled.

Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the effect of multiple baking cycles of porcelain on its shear bond strength to a cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy that is three-dimensionally printed using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technique. Materials and methods The research sample comprised forty-eight discs measuring 5 mm × 3 mm, divided into four groups according to: the manufacturing method (SLM, casting) and the number of porcelain baking cycles (1, 3) as follows: Group A: Co-Cr alloy by SLM with one baking cycle; Group B: Co-Cr alloy by SLM with three baking cycles; Group C: Ni-Cr alloy by casting with one baking cycle; Group D: Ni-Cr alloy by casting with three baking cycles. Then, porcelain was melted on disks, shear testing was performed and the values of the Shear Bond Strength (SBS) in MegaPascals (MPa) were calculated. Results The mean SBS values for each group were (A: 25.69 - B: 19.51 - C: 35.72 - D: 28.67 MPa). Statistical analysis showed that the manufacturing method and the number of porcelain baking cycles had a significant influence on shear bond durability (P > 0.05): the strength of this bond decreased when baking cycles increased. The Co-Cr samples manufactured by SLM also showed a decrease in binding strength compared to the Ni-Cr samples made by casting. Conclusion Repeated baking of porcelain reduces the strength of the porcelain bond with the Co-Cr alloy made by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technique.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the survival rate of full-coverage tooth-supported fixed prosthetic restorations, single crowns (SCs), and fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), taking into consideration the potential influence of tooth-vitality, presence and type of post, and type of prosthetic restoration material. MATERIALS AND METHODS In October 2022, two authors independently conducted a search in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus electronic databases as well as a hand search to identify clinical human studies on full-coverage SCs and FDPs supported by vital and/or non-vital abutments and/or a combination of both, with a minimum observation period of 24 months. RESULTS Out of 4198 studies identified through the database search and 22 through hand searching, 26 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis of the present systematic review. Included studies scored six points and more according to Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). The highest estimated 5-year survival rate was observed for (metal-ceramic and all-ceramic) SCs on vital teeth (98.3%; 95% CI [98.1, 98.6%]) and all ceramic SCs on non-vital teeth with fiber post (95.0%; 95% CI [94.5-95.4%]). Metal-ceramic SCs on vital teeth (97.1%; 95% CI [95.6-98.7%]) showed a statistically significant higher estimated 5-year survival rate compared to metal-ceramic SCs with cast metal post (90.7%; 95% CI [87.4-94.0%], P < 0.001), fiber post (91.3%; 95% CI [90.9-91.6%], P < 0.001) and without post (85.7%; 95% CI [80.7, 90.6%], P < 0.032). All-ceramic SCs with fiber post had a statistically significant higher estimated 5-year survival rate (95.0%; 95% CI [94.5-95.4%]) compared to metal-ceramic SCs on non-vital teeth with fiber post (91.3%; 95% CI [90.9-91.6%], P < 0.001). SCs (all-ceramic and metal-ceramic) with fiber post had a statistically significantly higher estimated 5-year survival rate of (92.7%; 95% CI [92.4-92.9%]) than SCs made of metal-ceramic and retained by cast metal post (90.7%; 95% CI [87.4-94.0%], P < 0.001). For FDPs, the 5-year survival rate was significantly higher for FDPs on vital abutments (84.9%; 95% CI [75.9, 93.9%]) compared to FDPs retained by non-vital abutment/s (81.3%; 95% CI [80.3, 82.2%], P = 0.049) irrespective to presence, type of post, and FDPs material. The results are limited by the limited number of studies and the presence of uncontrolled confounding clinical variables. CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of the study, tooth vitality is suggested to contribute positively to the survival of SCs and FDPs.

Abstract
The aim of the current study was to present the clinical and radiological outcomes of monolithic zirconia superstructures compared to the metal-ceramic ones in the All-on-4 concept for the prosthetic rehabilitation of the maxillae. A total of 30 patients were subdivided into groups according to their superstructure type (metal-ceramic (n = 15) or monolithic zirconia (n = 15)). All implants were functionally loaded within 24 h after insertion with provisional acrylic superstructures. Prosthetic complications, marginal bone loss, plaque accumulation, probing pocket depth, bleeding on probing, and bite force were documented over a period of 5 years. Marginal bone loss around the implants of the ceramic group remained well over the five years (1.21 ± 0.23 mm). However, marginal bone loss was significantly lower around the implants in the monolithic zirconia group (0.22 ± 0.14 mm) (p < 0.001). Bleeding on probing, plaque accumulation, and probing pocket depth values were correlated with marginal bone loss. Among all evaluated parameters, no differences could be detected in terms of the angulation of the implants. Detachment or chipping was observed in seven cases in the metal-ceramic superstructure group. In all cases, dentures were removed and repaired in the laboratory. In the monolithic zirconia group, chipping was detected after one year in two cases, after two years in four cases, and after five years in one case and could be managed by polishing in situ. Monolithic zirconia superstructures presented superior results regarding the parameters evaluated.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate and compare the survival, success rates, and biological and technical complications of three-unit posterior monolithic and veneered zirconia and metal-ceramic (MC) posterior fixed partial dentures (FPDs) fabricated using a digital workflow and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) over a 5-year follow-up.Methods Ninety patients in need of three-unit posterior FPDs were randomized to receive monolithic zirconia (MZ), veneered zirconia (VZ), and MC restorations (n = 30 each). Teeth preparations were scanned using an intraoral scanner, and restorations were milled and cemented with resin cement. Clinical performance and periodontal parameters were assessed at baseline and yearly up to 5 years after insertion. Data analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method, Friedman test, and Wilcoxon signed-rank test with Bonferroni correction and Mann-Whitney U test.Results The 5-year survival rates of the MZ, VZ, and MC FPDs were 87%, 97%, and 100%, respectively (P = 0.04). Most complications were biological in nature. Only one MZ FPD fractured 58 months after placement. All the restorations were assessed as satisfactory at each recall. Differences were found in the gingival index score over time in the VZ and MC groups. The margin index remained stable throughout the follow-up period in both zirconia groups.Conclusions The results of this study suggest that using a digital workflow to fabricate posterior FPDs is an adequate treatment option and that monolithic zirconia could be a viable alternative to metal-ceramic or veneered zirconia. However, further long-term studies are necessary to provide stronger evidence in patients with bruxism.

Abstract
The rehabilitation of free-end situations is a frequent indication in prosthetic dentistry. Cantilever fixed dental prostheses (cFDPs) made of 1st and 2nd generation zirconia are one treatment option. Due to a unique gradient technology, combinations of different zirconium dioxide generations are thus feasible in one restoration. However, data about these materials are rare. The purpose of this study was therefore to investigate the fracture resistance and fracture modes of tooth-supported cFDPs fabricated from different zirconia materials (gradient technology) and different framework thicknesses. A total of 40 cFDPs were fabricated using the CAD/CAM approach and belonged to five test groups. The different groups differed in the yttria content, the proportion of the tetragonal/cubic phases, or in wall thickness (0.7 mm or 1 mm). After completion, the cFDPs were subjected to thermal cycling and chewing simulation (1.2 × 106 load cycles, 108 N load). Afterwards, cFDPs were statically loaded until fracture in a universal testing machine. A non-parametric ANOVA was compiled to determine the possible effects of group membership on fracture resistance. In addition, post-hoc Tukey tests were used for bivariate comparisons. The mean fracture loads under axial load application ranged from 288 to 577 N. ANOVA detected a significant impact of the used material on the fracture resistances (p < 0.001). Therefore, the use of cFDPs fabricated by gradient technology zirconia may not be unreservedly recommended for clinical use, whereas cFPDs made from 3Y-TZP exhibit fracture resistance above possible masticatory loads in the posterior region.

Abstract
This virtual study was designed to evaluate the stress-deformation of a metal fixed partial dentures (FPDs) pontic under different loads using two different connectors. The STL file was generated for a RPD of two implant-supported restorations. The Co-Cr metal substructure was designed with two types of connector design. The pontic is connected to implant-supported crowns with square and round shape connectors. This study was designed for a cementless-retained implant-supported FPD. Finite element modeling (FEM) is used to assess the stress and deformation of the pontic within a metal substructure as the FEM might provide virtual values that could have laboratory and clinical relevance. The Co-Cr alloy mechanical properties like the Poisson ratio and modulus of elasticity were based on the parameters of the three-dimensional structure additive method. Nonparametric analyses (Mann-Whitney U test) was used. The use of square or round connectors often resulted in non-significant changes in stress, and deformation under either three or each loaded point on the occlusal surface of a pontic (P > 0.05). However, the deformation revealed distinct variations between loads of the three points compared to each loaded point (P ≤ 0.05). According to this study data, the pontic occlusal surface appears to be the same in stress and deformation under different loads depending on whether square or round connectors are used. While at the same connector designs, the pontic occlusal surface deformed significantly at three loaded points than it did at each point.

Abstract
Despite the development of implant-supported prostheses, there are still patients for whom conservative treatments such as resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses (RBFDPs) are more appropriate. This study's objective was to analyze the available research on full-ceramic RBFDPs. In this study, Web of Science, MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar databases were searched for articles published in English between 2010 and 2020. A total of 14 studies were reviewed based on the eligibility criteria. The results showed that using a cantilever design with one abutment had an advantage over two abutments. Additionally, it was proposed that preparations designed with retentive aids, such as a proximal box, groove, and pinhole, could improve RBFDP survival rates. IPS e.max ZirCAD, In-Ceram alumina, and zirconia CAD/CAM were the most commonly used framework materials. Most studies used air abrasion, salinization, or hydrofluoric acid for surface treatment. Adhesive resin cements were the most frequently used type of cement. The survival rate of In-Ceram ceramics (85.3%-94.8%) was lower than that of In-Ceram zirconia and IPS e.max ZirCAD. Debonding, followed by framework fracture, was the leading cause of failure. Following 3-10 years follow-up, the survival percentage of all-ceramic RBFDPs ranged from 76% to 100%. Although RBFDPs have demonstrated satisfactory success as a conservative treatment, long-term follow-ups and higher sample sizes in clinical research are required to gain more reliable outcomes on the clinical success rate of various RBFDP designs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article highlights a CAD/CAM complete-mouth rehabilitation in an 82-year-old patient by means of a complete maxillary prosthesis and mandibular implant- and tooth-supported fixed restorations made from multilayered zirconia. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS Comprehensive complete-mouth rehabilitations in elderly patients with adaptation of the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) often present particular challenges. This applies especially when exacting functional and esthetic requirements are to be met and the treatment should not cause the patient too much effort, still ensuring the highest level of quality and efficiency and a low intervention rate. CONCLUSION The digital approach used for the present patient allowed for an efficient treatment procedure, facilitated virtual evaluations using a face-scan, and enhanced the predictability of the prosthodontic outcome. The approach enabled some steps required in the conventional protocol to be omitted, resulting in a straightforward clinical treatment with minimal strain on the patient. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Because of the comprehensive recording of extraoral and intraoral data, for example with a facial scanner, it was possible to transfer a digital replica of the patient to the dental laboratory technician. With this protocol, many steps can be performed in the absence of the real patient.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the long-term clinical outcome of posterior inlay-retained fixed dental prostheses (IRFDPs) with a modified design made from zirconia ceramic. METHODS In 30 patients thirty 3-unit IRFDPs were placed to replace 7 premolars (4 in the maxilla, 3 in the mandible), and 23 first molars (15 in the maxilla, 8 in the mandible). Preparations were accomplished in agreement with the general principles for ceramic inlay restorations and modified with a short retainer-wing bevel preparation within the enamel at the buccal and oral sides. The frameworks were milled from 3Y-TZP ceramic, and the pontics were veneered with feldspathic ceramic. All IRFDPs were bonded with a phosphate monomer containing luting resin after air-abrasion of the intaglio surfaces. The patients were recalled 6-12 months after placement, and then annually. Kaplan-Meier analysis was used to calculate the survival and complication rates of the IRFDPs. RESULTS The mean observation time was 10.6 ± 1.5 years. The 10-year cumulative survival rate was 89% with 4 failures, two of them were due to deep secondary caries with loss of retention, one due to repeated debonding with enamel fractures, and one due to generalized progressive periodontitis. The most common complication was chipping of the veneering ceramic (20.1%). Eighteen IRFDPs were free of any type of complication up to 15.4 years, which corresponds to a 10-year cumulative success rate of 70.4%. CONCLUSION The long-term clinical performance of modified IRFDPs made of veneered zirconia ceramics was favorable after 10 years, therefore, they represent a treatment alternative to replace posterior single missing teeth. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Zirconia-based IRFDPs fabricated in the modified design may represent a substance-preserving alternative to conventional posterior FDPs to replace posterior single missing teeth, particularly in cases where implants cannot be placed, and when the adjacent teeth already have small restorations or defects.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the effect of low-temperature degradation (LTD) and surface treatment on the flexural strength of additive-manufactured (AM) zirconia by comparison to subtractive-manufactured (SM) zirconia. Disc-shaped zirconia specimens were fabricated using AM and SM technology, and each group was assigned to 3 subgroups according to the type of surface treatment: control, sandblasting (SB), and 9% hydrofluoric acid etching (HF). The groups were then further divided into 2 subgroups: unaged and aged. Biaxial flexural strength, crystal phase, surface topography, and surface roughness were measured to evaluate the mechanical properties. Statistical analyses were performed with 3-way ANOVA, followed by the comparison of means with Bonferroni post hoc analyses. The means and standard deviations of the biaxial flexural strength and Weibull parameters were calculated with descriptive statistics. All SM groups showed significantly greater flexural strength than the AM groups (p < .05), and LTD did not affect flexural strength except for the SMHF group (p < .05). After LTD, monoclinic phases (m-phase) were found in all groups, and SEM images showed grain pullout due to zirconia volume expansion in both control groups. Sandblasting significantly affected flexural strength (p < .05), whereas the HF group did not affect flexural strength except in the SMHF group after LTD (p < .05). No significant difference was observed in the surface roughness of AM compared to SM groups conditioned with the same surface treatment regardless of LTD. AM zirconia has comparable mechanical properties to SM zirconia, regardless of low-temperature degradation and surface treatment, which indicates the potential of the AM technique for clinical applications.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to compare the marginal and internal fit of five-unit zirconia-based fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) fabricated using digital scans and conventional impressions. MATERIALS AND METHODS Nine master models with three zirconia abutments were scanned with an intraoral scanner (test group), and nine conventional impressions (control group) of these same models were also made. The stone casts from these impressions were scanned with a laboratory extraoral scanner (D700, 3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark). A total of 18 five-unit zirconia-based FDP frameworks (test group, n = 9; control group, n = 9) were manufactured. Marginal and internal fit (in μm) were evaluated using the replica method under micro-computed tomography. Analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA) and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to compare continuous variables across two groups. A level of p < 0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. RESULTS The mean ± standard deviation of the marginal fit was 95.03 ± 12.74 μm in the test group and 106.02 ± 14.51 μm in the control group. The lowest marginal mean value was observed in the test group, with a statistically significant difference compared to the control group (F = 14.56, p < 0.05). The mean ± standard deviation of the internal fit was 103.61 ± 9.32 and 106.38 ± 7.64 μm, respectively, in the test and control groups, with no statistically significant difference (F = 1.56, p > 0.05). The mean values of both groups were clinically acceptable. CONCLUSIONS The five-unit zirconia-based FDPs fabricated with digital scans showed better fit than those in the conventional impression group. Within the limitations of this study, these results are encouraging, and continued progress in the digital field should allow for more accurate long-span restorations.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The second most common biological complication in fixed prosthodontics is loss of pulp vitality, which may lead to restoration loss. While reasons for loss of pulp vitality are unclear, 2 potential contributing factors, duration of the interim restoration and operator experience, have not been fully investigated. PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate whether the duration of the interim restoration or the experience of the dentist was correlated with loss of pulp vitality. MATERIAL AND METHODS Fixed prosthetic restorations placed between 2005 and 2012 were retrospectively analyzed. Abutment teeth supporting single-unti or multiunit restorations were evaluated regarding loss of pulp vitality. The Mann-Whitney U test and simple logistic regression were used, with α=.05 for the subsequent multiple logistic regression. The experience of dental professionals was defined by the number of treatments performed and coupled with failure rate by using an analysis of variance. RESULTS One hundred seventy-four dentists made 15 879 restorations, of which 1136 failed during the observation period, a failure rate of 7.2%. Two hundred fifty restorations were randomly selected from the failed restorations, and a corresponding 250 restorations were randomly selected from nonfailed restorations for the control group. Increased duration with interim replacement was linked to a higher risk of loss of pulp vitality (P<.001). Failure rate in the dentist group varied from 0% to 100%. No significant differences in failure rate were found among dentists who did few restorations and those who performed larger numbers of restorations. CONCLUSIONS The results of the present study suggest that operator experience does not affect failure rate. However, extended time with an interim restoration was a contributing factor to the loss of pulp vitality.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To process an alumina-toughened zirconia (ATZ) nanocomposite and to characterize its crystalline phases, microstructure, residual stress, mechanical and optical properties before and after two different artificial aging methodologies. METHODS Disc-shaped specimens were obtained through uniaxial pressing of a commercial ATZ powder comprised of 80%ZrO2 / 20%Al2O3, with a particle size of 50 nm and 150 nm, respectively. Sintering was performed at 1500ºC for 2 h. Groups were established according to the aging protocol as immediate (ATZ-I) and aged either in autoclave (ATZ-A) or hydrothermal reactor (ATZ-R) at 134 ºC for 20 h at 2.2 bar. Crystalline phases and microstructure were assessed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. Residual stress was evaluated by Raman spectroscopy. Contrast Ratio (CR) and Translucency Parameter (TP) were calculated to characterize optical properties. Mechanical properties were analyzed through Vickers microhardness, fracture toughness, and biaxial flexural strength test. RESULTS XRD spectra of both aging protocols revealed the presence of monoclinic zirconia (20-31%), where higher phase transformation was observed after aging in hydrothermal reactor. Optical properties evaluation demonstrated high opacity (CR: 0.99) and masking ability (TP: 0.26), with no significant differences after aging. Raman spectroscopy evidenced the presence of residual compressive stresses in the aged groups, being significantly higher for ATZ-R (-215.2 MPa). As-sintered specimens revealed hardness of ∼12.3 GPa and fracture toughness of ∼1.9 MPa.m1/2. Characteristic strength was 740 MPa for ATZ-I, 804 MPa for ATZ-A, and 879 MPa for ATZ-R, with significant differences between groups. Weibull modulus ranged from 16.5 to 18.8. All groups demonstrated high reliability up to 500 MPa stress missions (99-100%), with no significant differences after aging. SIGNIFICANCE The experimental ATZ nanocomposite presented high opacity and a high Weibull modulus. While aging created internal compressive stress responsible for an increase in characteristic strength, the nanocomposite was susceptible to hydrothermal degradation. Further studies are required to evaluate its degradation kinetics at low temperatures.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To predict the lifetime and fracture probability of anterior crowns made of a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (IPS e.max CAD, LD, Ivoclar Vivadent, Liechtenstein) and a zirconia-containing lithium silicate glass-ceramic (Celtra Duo, ZLS, Dentsply Sirona, USA) under cycling loading. METHODS Three-point bending tests were conducted to measure the viscoelastic parameters. These parameters are used to compute the residual stresses of the anterior crown after crystallization. In the next analysis, the cyclic loading on the anterior crown was calculated. Based on this combined stress state (residual stress and stress state due to external cyclic loading), the life cycle and fracture probability of the anterior crown was calculated using the CARES/Life software. Finally, fatigue experiments were carried out to compare and validate the results of the computations. RESULTS Although a sound qualitative comparison of the lifetime of both materials can be done using this methodology, the calculated fracture probability of the anterior crown for both materials was very low in comparison with the fatigue test results using the fatigue parameters determined from the experiments. In order to achieve good correspondence with the experimental results, the SCG exponent n for both materials should be modified by a correlation factor of 0.38. SIGNIFICANCE Using this modified computational strategy, the results of the time-consuming fatigue tests for dental glass-ceramics can be closely predicted. This methodology can be integrated into the development process of new glass-ceramic materials in order to save time and costs.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate load-bearing capacity and wear performance of experimental short fiber-reinforced composite (SFRC) and conventional lithium-disilicate CAD/CAM fabricated fixed partial dentures (FPDs). Two groups (n = 12/group) of three-unit CAD/CAM fabricated posterior FPDs were made. The first group used experimental SFRC blocks, and the second group fabricated from lithium-disilicate (IPS e.max CAD). All FPDs were luted on a zirconia testing jig with dual-curing resin cement. Half of FPDs per group were quasi-statically loaded until fracture. The other half experienced cyclic fatigue aging (100.000 cycles, Fmax = 500 N) before loading quasi-statically until fracture. Fracture mode was examined using SEM. Wear test was performed using 15,000 loading cycles. Both material type and aging had a significant effect on the load-bearing capacity of FPDs. Experimental SFRC CAD without fatigue aging had significantly the highest load-bearing capacity (2096 ± 149N). Cyclic fatigue aging decreased the load-bearing capacity of the SFRC group (1709 ± 188N) but increased it for the lithium-disilicate group (1546 ± 155N). Wear depth values of SFRC CAD (29.3μm) were significantly lower compared to lithium-disilicate (54.2μm). Experimental SFRC CAD demonstrated the highest load-bearing capacity before and after cyclic fatigue aging, and superior wear behavior compared to the control material.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the sandblasting treatment on the microstructure, optical and mechanical properties of multi-layered translucent zirconia. METHODS Samples of yttria-stabilized zirconia were prepared by stratifying four layers (L1, L2, L3 and L4) of ML-type KATANA multi-layered monolithic discs, whose surfaces were then sandblasted with alumina particles (110 µm and 0.2 MPa) in order to evaluate its effect on the presence of different crystalline phases as well as on the optical and mechanical properties of each of the four layers. The optical characterization was carried out by measuring the reflectance spectrum and colorimetric parameters by UV-Vis spectrophotometric analysis and the transmittance curves were indirectly obtained using the Kubelka-Munk model (KM). Microstructural, structural, mechanical and roughness characterizations were also performed using SEM, XRD, biaxial flexural strength B3B, and light interferometry, respectively RESULTS: According to the KM model there are different degrees of translucency between the upper and lower layers of the monolithic discs, but there was no influence of the Al2O3-sandblasting treatment on this optical property. The disk pigmentation causes greater absorption of light below 600 nm, decreasing the transmittance rate to values below 25% in this region of the spectrum. The yellowing index presented higher values for inner disk layers L3 and L4, in agreement with the highest values of the light absorption coefficient K observed for these layers. The roughness of the samples did not change significantly with the surface treatment performed and the sandblasting did not result in new crystalline phases. SEM analysis showed the presence of different grain sizes in all layers analyzed, being related to the co-occurring presence of cubic (c-ZrO2) and tetragonal (t-ZrO2) phases in similar contents (∼ 50 wt%). The Weibull statistical analysis, in turn, showed an increase in the Weibull characteristic stress value (σ0) for most layers subjected to sandblasting, except for the second layer (central region of the disk). It was also verified an increase in the value of the structural reliability of the material (m), referring to the samples of the central region of the disc (L2 and L3 layers) after sandblasting. SIGNIFICANCE The pigmentation in the disk causes a decrease of the transmittance rate to values well below 25% in the region of the spectrum 400-600 nm and the inner layers (L3 and L4) have even lower transmittance than the outer layers in this spectrum range. Although the CR index indicates variation related to the Al2O3-sandblasting treatment, the transmittance spectra of KM model show that the sandblasting did not cause a significant change in the transmittance rate of the four analyzed layers. Also, there is no significant difference in the light scattering of the different layers of the disc, either before or after Al2O3-sandblasting treatment.

Abstract
The purpose of this outcome audit is to evaluate the influence of the clinicians' experience on the outcome of dental implants. In addition, it is to identify the associated risk factors that might influence the success and survival of these implants. METHODOLOGY The records of patients treated with SLA/SLActive Straumann implants were screened. This enabled us to have a minimum of 12 months of follow-up. Eligible patients, according to the inclusion criteria, were contacted and invited to undergo a follow-up assessment. Success was accounted for and defined in a comprehensive manner by considering four different categories: implant perspective, peri-implant soft tissue perspective, prosthetic perspective, and patient satisfaction. The patient investigations included a clinical examination of the implant mobility, suppuration, width of keratinized mucosa, probing depth, plaque accumulation, prosthetic complications, and patient satisfaction. In addition, a periapical radiograph was taken to evaluate bone loss and peri-implant radiolucency. The data were analysed using SPSS version 26. RESULTS Thirty-eight patients with 84 SLA/SLActive Straumann implants were available for the assessment. The mean age of the patients at implant surgery was 49.05 ± 13.19 years. Over the mean follow-up period of 26 months, no implant fractures were noted. Overall, eight implants were considered failures (9.5%). Two out of six patients with a history of periodontitis (HoP) and two out of five smokers exhibited failed implants. The patients' satisfaction responses showed that all the responses were statistically higher than the test median value of three. The median value of general satisfaction using a visual analogue scale was 9 out of 10. CONCLUSIONS The implants placed on partially and fully edentulous patients revealed high survival and success rates (100% and 90.5%, respectively) at a mean follow-up time of 26 months. It can be concluded that the implant practise among trainees in the programme is satisfactory. A history of periodontitis and a lack of patient compliance with supportive periodontal therapy in some cases have been shown to be risk factors associated with increased implant failure, mainly peri-implantitis.

Abstract
Purpose Zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns are very popular dental restorations. The cement type and layering technique used can profoundly affect the clinical performance of these crowns.This retrospective study is designed to investigate the success rate of cemented and adhesively bonded monolithic and partially layered zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns placed in faculty practice settings. Materials and Methods Patients who had received zirconia or lithium disilicate crowns at the faculty practice were invited for clinical examination. The examiner used the modified United States Public Health Service (MUSPHS) evaluation criteria to evaluate the crowns. The crowns were either glass ionomer cemented zirconia (GIC-Zr), resin-bonded zirconia (Adh-Zr), or resin-bonded lithium disilicate (Adh-LD). The crowns were also divided into monolithic and layered groups. Inferential analysis was used to examine the differences through bivariate analysis using t-testing and one-way ANOVA. Results Thirty-five patients, with a combined total of 218 single crowns, agreed to participate in the study. No statistically significant differences in the quality outcome variables considered were found between the groups, except for marginal adaptation, where Adh-Zr achieved significantly higher scores compared to GIC-Zr and Adh-LD. Layered zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns have significantly higher quality outcomes in terms of anatomic form, marginal adaptation, and color match compared to monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns. Conclusions Conventionally cemented zirconia and adhesively bonded zirconia and lithium disilicate crowns are reliable treatment options with high short-term success rates. Clinical studies with longer follow-up times are needed to investigate their long-term success rates.

Abstract
The biomechanical effects of dental tissue according to various dental crown materials were investigated using finite element analysis. Bone, prepared tooth, root canal, and periodontal ligament were modeled based on computed tomography. Depending on the characteristics of the crown material, it was classified into zirconia, hybrid ceramic, gold alloy, and acrylic resin. A loading force of 200 N was applied in the vertical direction to the occlusal surface of the crown, and analysis was performed under the condition that all interfaces were tied. The results demonstrate that the highest von Mises stress was shown in the prepared tooth of the acrylic resin model, which is a temporary prosthesis, and the pulpal pressure was also the highest. Additionally, among the final prosthesis, the highest stress was shown in the hybrid ceramic model prepared teeth. The properties of restoration materials can be a factor influencing the tooth structure. Thus, in order to make a correct decision when selecting a material for restorative treatment, it is necessary to understand, analyze, and evaluate the properties of these restoration materials.

Abstract
The strength of zirconia ceramic materials used in restorations is dependent upon sintering. Varying sintering protocols may affect the biaxial flexural strength of zirconia materials. This in vitro study was conducted to investigate the effects of sintering parameters on the biaxial flexural strength of monolithic zirconia. Two different monoblock zirconia ceramics were used. Following coloration, samples of both types of ceramics were divided into groups according to whether or not biaxial flexural strength testing was performed directly after sintering or following thermocycling. Biaxial flexural strength data was analysed with a Shapiro Wilk normality test, followed by 1-way ANOVA, Tukey post hoc tests for inter-group comparisons, and paired samples t-tests for intra-group comparisons. A significant difference was found between the biaxial flexural strengths of Zircon X and Upcera ceramics before thermocycling (p<0.05). In both Zircon X and Upcera ceramic groups, the thermocycling process created a significant difference in the biaxial flexural strength values of the ceramic samples in Group 6 (p<0.05) which had the slowest heating rate and longest holding time. The zirconia ceramics have higher BFS at higher heating rates either before or after thermocycling. The holding time has significant effects on thermocycling and flexural strength. The zirconia achieved its optimum strength when it sintered at longer time regardless of heating rates.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical behavior of an implant-supported crown made using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) resin composite (RC) blocks in the posterior region. MATERIAL AND METHODS Four commercially available CAD-CAM RC blocks were used in this study: Cerasmart 300 (CS300; GC, Tokyo, Japan), Katana Avencia P Block (KAP; Kuraray Noritake Dental, Niigata, Japan); KZR HR3 Gamma Theta (HR3; Yamakin, Osaka, Japan), and Estelite P block (ESP; Tokuyama Dental, Tokyo, Japan). Katana Zirconia STML (ST; Kuraray Noritake Dental) was used as the control group. The elastic moduli of each material were determined by a three-point bending test. After the CAD models were designed, two different loading scenarios (oblique, vertical) were created. 3D finite element analysis was conducted with the prepared models. RESULTS The elastic modulus of the material utilized for the implant restorations did not cause any change in the stresses transmitted to the implant or peripheral bone. An important difference was detected in the abutment-crown junction area. The minimum von Mises value at the abutment-crown interface was obtained in ST, which has the closest elastic modulus to the titanium abutment. CONCLUSIONS The 3D finite element model designed in this study was used to demonstrate that implant-supported crowns fabricated with four different CAD-CAM RCs showed no critical stress concentrations in the bone or implant under all loading conditions. These results suggest that CAD-CAM RC blocks could be used as an alternative material for implant-supported restorations in the posterior region in terms of stress distribution.

Abstract
Over the years, advancement in ceramic-based dental restorative materials has led to the development of monolithic zirconia with increased translucency. The monolithic zirconia fabricated from nano-sized zirconia powders is shown to be superior in physical properties and more translucent for anterior dental restorations. Most in vitro studies on monolithic zirconia have focused mainly on the effect of surface treatment or the wear of the material, while the nanotoxicity of this material is yet to be explored. Hence, this research aimed to assess the biocompatibility of yttria-stabilized nanozirconia (3-YZP) on the three-dimensional oral mucosal models (3D-OMM). The 3D-OMMs were constructed using human gingival fibroblast (HGF) and immortalized human oral keratinocyte cell line (OKF6/TERT-2), co-cultured on an acellular dermal matrix. On day 12, the tissue models were exposed to 3-YZP (test) and inCoris TZI (IC) (reference material). The growth media were collected at 24 and 48 h of exposure to materials and assessed for IL-1β released. The 3D-OMMs were fixed with 10% formalin for the histopathological assessments. The concentration of the IL-1β was not statistically different between the two materials for 24 and 48 h of exposure (p = 0.892). Histologically, stratification of epithelial cells was formed without evidence of cytotoxic damage and the epithelial thickness measured was the same for all model tissues. The excellent biocompatibility of nanozirconia, as evidenced by the multiple endpoint analyses of the 3D-OMM, may indicate the potential of its clinical application as a restorative material.

Abstract
The main objective of this study is to quantify the implications of the complications of periodontal pathology and dental mobility on the pathology of dysfunctional algo syndrome, a clinical entity with profound implications for the patient's quality of life. METHODOLOGY Clinical and laboratory evaluation was conducted in the 2018-2022 period, on a group of 110 women and 130 men, aged between 20-69, selected from our practice venue, Policlinica Stomatologica nr. 1 Iasi, Clinical Base of Dentistry Education "Mihail Kogalniceanu" Iasi, "Grigore T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi and "Apollonia" University Iasi. Overall, 125 subjects were diagnosed with periodontal disease with complications and TMJ disorders and followed periodontal therapy in the context of oral complex rehabilitation treatments (study group); the results of their clinical evaluation were compared with the results of the evaluation of the control group, made from the other 115 patients). RESULTS Dental mobility and gingival recession were identified as more frequent in the study sample compared with the control sample, the differences being statistically significant in both cases. In total, 26.7% of patients had different types of TMJ disorders and 22.9% of patients had occlusal changes; the percentages are slightly increased in the study sample compared with the control one, but the recorded differences are not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Dental mobility, most of the time, is a negative consequence of periodontal disease, leading to the alteration of the mandibular-cranial relations, materializing in an important proportion as an etiopathogenic factor of the dysfunctional syndrome of the stomatognathic system.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the survival rates of implant-supported monolithic zirconia crowns and fixed partial dentures (FPD). MATERIAL AND METHODS An electronic search for articles in the English language literature published from January 1, 2001 to September 17, 2021 was performed using PubMed, Scopus, and CENTRAL search engines. After applying predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria, the definitive list of selected articles was used for calculating the interval survival rate (ISR) and cumulative survival rate (CSR). Restoration failure in this study was defined as the fracture or compromise of any part of the ceramic restoration that required the removal or remake of the implant-supported restoration. RESULTS The electronic search resulted in 457 titles. The systematic application of inclusion and exclusion criteria resulted in 14 clinical studies that addressed the clinical outcomes of implant-supported monolithic zirconia crowns and fixed partial dentures. Of these, 3 were randomized controlled trials, 5 were prospective studies, and 6 were retrospective studies. Follow-up periods ranged from 1 to 5 years. Of the 644 implant-supported monolithic zirconia restorations computed in this systematic review, there was only 1 reported failure of the monolithic zirconia restorative material over a follow-up period of up to 5 years, for a cumulative survival rate of 99.84%. At the maximum follow-up interval of 5 years, the cumulative survival rate for monolithic zirconia single crowns was 100% and the cumulative survival rate for monolithic zirconia fixed partial dentures was 99.60%. CONCLUSIONS Implant-supported monolithic zirconia single crowns and fixed partial dentures have excellent short-term (<5 years) survival rates but the evidence for medium-term survival (>5 years) and beyond is lacking.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Even with excellent fixed dental prostheses (FDPs), there will be a substantial risk of biological complications, such as caries, if proper oral hygiene is not maintained. This study aimed to evaluate the risks of developing secondary caries with FDPs in relation to the patient oral hygiene status. MATERIAL AND METHODS Clinical and radiographic examinations were performed for patients to collect data related to their FDP complications and oral hygiene status. The main clinical parameter analyzed was secondary caries. Complications such as a fracture, debonding, or the need for endodontic therapy were also analyzed. The interval survival rate and the cumulative survival rate of FDPs from the time of treatment to the time of follow-up were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 423 patients (with a total of 1116 FDPs) were examined in this study, with a mean age of 43.7 years and a mean follow-up time of 7 years. Regarding complications, secondary caries was detected in 94 FDPs (8.4%), fracture (or chipping) in 85 (7.6%) cases, need for endodontic treatment in 42 cases (3.7%), and debonding in four (0.3%) cases. Secondary caries was found in nine out of 219 FDPs (4%) in patients with good oral hygiene, 35 out of 634 FDPs (5.5%) in patients with fair oral hygiene, and 50 out of 272 FDPs (18.4%) in patients with poor oral hygiene (p ≤ .001). CONCLUSIONS Good oral hygiene has a great influence on reducing the risk of secondary caries in patients with FDPs. The occurrence of secondary caries is a common complication in patients with poor oral hygiene.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the failure behavior of 3 mol.% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) prosthetic crowns air-abraded with aluminum oxide (AO) particles of different sizes. Ninety ceramic premolar crowns were produced with 3Y-TZP frameworks veneered with porcelain. Crowns were randomly divided into three groups, according to the size of the air abrasion AO particles (n = 30): (GC) untreated (control); (G53) 53 µm; (G125) 125 µm. Air abrasion was performed with 0.25 mpa pressure, 10-mm distance, for 10 s. Crowns were adhesively cemented to dentin analog abutments. Specimens were loaded in compression to failure, in 37oC distilled water, using a universal testing machine (n = 30). Fractographic analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope and SEM. The roughness of the crown's inner surface was evaluated using an optical profilometer (n = 10). Fracture load data were statistically analyzed with Weibull analysis and roughness data with Kruskal-Wallis (α = 0.05). GC had the lowest characteristic fracture load (L0), while G53 and G125 had higher and statistically similar L0 values. The Weibull modulus (m) was similar among groups. The failure modes observed were catastrophic failure and porcelain chipping. There were no differences between the roughness parameters for the experimental groups (p > 0.05). The size of the AO particles did not affect the fracture load and failure mode of 3Y-TZP crowns. Air abrasion with 53 µm and 125 µm particles resulted in a higher fracture load of ceramic crowns than the untreated group while maintaining their reliability and surface characteristics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The background and clinical understanding of the properties of currently available indirect restorative systems and fabrication methods is, along with manufacturer and evidence-based literature, an important starting point to guide the clinical selection of materials for tooth and/or implant supported reconstructions. Therefore, this review explores most indirect restorative systems available in the market, especially all-ceramic, along with aspects of manufacturing process, clinical survival rates, and esthetic outcomes. OVERVIEW Progressive incorporation of new technologies in the dental field and advancements in materials science have enabled the development/improvement of indirect restorative systems and treatment concepts in oral rehabilitation, resulting in reliable and predictable workflows and successful esthetic and functional outcomes. Indirect restorative systems have evolved from metal ceramics and polymers to glass ceramics, polycrystalline ceramics, and resin-matrix ceramics, aiming to improve not only biological and mechanical properties, but especially the optical properties and esthetic quality of the reconstructions, in attempt to mimic natural teeth. CONCLUSIONS Based on several clinical research, materials, and patient-related parameters, a decision tree for the selection of indirect restorative materials was suggested to guide clinicians in the rehabilitation process. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The pace of materials development is faster than that of clinical research aimed to support their use. Since no single material provides an ideal solution to every case, professionals must continuously seek information from well designed, long-term clinical trials in order to incorporate or not new materials and technological advancements.

Abstract
New monolithic multi-layered zirconia restorations are gaining popularity due to their excellent aesthetic properties. However, current knowledge of these newest multi-layer ceramics in terms of mechanical properties is scarce. Three monolithic, multi-layered zirconia materials (Katana, Kuraray Noritake, Japan) were selected for comparison: High Translucent Multi-layered zirconia (HTML), Super Translucent Multi-layered zirconia (STML) and Ultra Translucent Multi-layered zirconia (UTML). Fifteen specimens per group were cut from pre-sintered blocs in each of the four layers (L1, L2, L3, L4) and in different thicknesses (0.4 mm, 0.8 mm and 1.2 mm). Critical fracture load (Fcf) was recorded in 3-point-bending. Flexural strength (σ) in MPa, Vickers hardness (HV) in N/mm2, fracture toughness (KIc) in MPa*m1/2, Weibull Modulus (m) and characteristic Weibull strength (σw) in MPa were assessed. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA analysis. FS and KIc were significantly higher (p < 0.05) for Katana™ HTML (652.85 ± 143.76−887.64 ± 118.95/4.25 ± 0.43−5.01 ± 0.81) in comparison to Katana™ STML (280.17 ± 83.41−435.95 ± 73.58/3.06 ± 0.27−3.84 ± 0.47) and UTML (258.25 ± 109.98−331.26 ± 56.86/2.35 ± 0.31−2.94 ± 0.33), with no significant differences between layers and layer thicknesses. The range of indications should be carefully considered when selecting the type of monolithic zirconia for fabrication of dental restorations, as materials widely differ in mechanical properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess and compare the accuracy of the marginal and internal fit of lithium disilicate crowns and onlays fabricated by conventional and digital methods. SOURCES An electronic search was carried out on MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane Library between 2010 and 2021. STUDY SELECTION Seventeen studies published between 2014 & 2021 were included, of which thirteen were in vitro laboratory-based studies; three were in vivo clinical studies and one randomised controlled trial. DATA Twelve studies focused on the marginal fit, five focused on the marginal and internal fit. Five studies found that the marginal and internal fit of crowns were more accurate using digital techniques. Five studies noted that there was no difference using either technique and two noted that conventional methods had a more accurate marginal fit. CONCLUSION Digital techniques were comparable to conventional methods in terms of accuracy although there was insufficient evidence to indicate that one technique was more accurate than the other with respect to Lithium Disilicate restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Digital impressions are reliable and viable alternatives for clinicians compared to conventional impression techniques when restoring teeth with lithium disilicate restorations.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Completely veneered zirconia ceramic (ZC) fixed partial dentures (FPDs) have been reported to have a higher incidence of ceramic chipping than the standard metal-ceramic FPDs. However, data from comparative long-term studies are sparse. PURPOSE The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the long-term survival, chipping-free survival, and success of ceramic-veneered high noble metal alloy (HN), base metal alloy (cobalt-chromium alloy) (CC), and ZC FPDs and to isolate risk factors for the incidence of failure, veneer chipping, and overall complications. MATERIAL AND METHODS Data from 289 study participants (58.7% women; mean age, 57.97 ±11.51 years) provided with a total of 400 FPDs comprising 197 (49.3%) HN FPDs, 121 (30.3%) CC FPDs, and 82 (20.5%) ZC FPDs fabricated from presintered 3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia (mean time of service, 6.85 ±3.25 years) were evaluated. Of these, 278 (69.5%) FPDs were provided by dentists and 122 (30.5%) by dental students. Five- and 10-year survival, chipping-free survival, and success rates were calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and compared with the log-rank test. Risk factors were assessed using Cox regression analysis. The study was exploratory, so all P values were considered exploratory and descriptive. RESULTS The 5- and 10-year survival rates were 94.7% and 77.8% for HN, 93.7% and 81.2% for CC, and 92.9% and 53.3% for ZC FPDs, respectively, indicating no clear difference in survival among the framework materials. The 5- and 10-year chipping-free rates were 94.1% and 82.8% for HN, 96.1% and 78.9% for CC, and 82.6% and 62.2% for ZC FPDs, respectively, indicating a difference between HN and ZC, and CC and ZC restorations. The 5- and 10-year success rates were 83.7% and 55.3% for HN, 86.5% and 51.4% for CC, and 68.9% and 30.2% for ZC FPDs, respectively, indicating a difference between HN and ZC, and CC and ZC restorations. The Cox regression model indicated framework material as an influencing risk factor for success, and this influence persisted when chipping was investigated. Compared with zirconia, the use of a metal alloy reduced the risk of chipping or the occurrence of complications by up to one-third. CONCLUSIONS All FPDs showed high 5-year survival rates and acceptable 10-year survival rates with no strong differences among the materials. Higher success and chipping-free rates were observed for both HN and CC restorations compared with ZC restorations. Metal frameworks had a lower risk for complications or veneer chipping than zirconia frameworks.

Abstract
PURPOSE To estimate the fatigue life of 3-unit molar fixed partial dentures (FPDs) made from two different monolithic ceramic systems, zirconia cercon (ZC) and lithium disilicate (LD). The effect of the connector size on the fatigue resistance of the monolithic FPD was also investigated. METHODS Two models for the FPDs were built, a 3-unit all-ceramic and a porcelain-fused-to-metal. The porcelain-fused-to-metal FPD model was used as the control. Actual 3-unit FPDs (replacing the second lower premolar) were constructed using a computer aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) system. Finite element analysis (FEA) was executed. A hemispherical indenter was used to simulate occlusal load. The occlusal load phase of the chewing cycle was applied at the premolar pontic. RESULTS The failure location for the monolithic FPD was always located at the distal connector. Connector size played a key role in determining the long-term survival of the prosthesis. The fatigue resistance was predicted to be 670 N for the ZC with a connector size 4 × 3 mm, while it was only 226 N for LD. As for porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM), FEA predicts that fatigue resistance can reach up to 770 N. Under the cyclic load of 670 N, the fatigue life for the zirconia FPD with connector size 4 × 3 mm was 2.23 × 106 cycles while it survived only 3.1 × 105 cycles when the connector was reduced to 3.5 × 2.5 mm. The angle of the oblique load has a significant effect on the stress distribution. CONCLUSION 3-unit monolithic FPDs made of ZC have superior fatigue performance compared to those made of LD. The fatigue life of the zirconia FPD was about three times longer than that made of LD with a connector size of 4 mm × 3 mm. The survival rates of ZC FPDs are comparable to porcelain-fused-to-metal. A significant reduction in fatigue strength is predicted for reduced connector size. Therefore, it is necessary to establish general guidelines for the minimum connector size.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of this retrospective clinical study was to evaluate the survival and the occurrence of technical and biological complications in bi-layered zirconia-based (Zi) single crown and 3-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). Also, the study aimed to analyze the effects of tooth vitality (vital versus non-vital), abutment location (anterior versus posterior), and luting cement (self-adhesive resin versus resin-reinforced glass ionomer) on clinical outcomes. METHODS A total of 147 prostheses (in 94 patients) placed by undergraduate dental students in a university dental center during the period 2015-2021 were examined clinically using modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and California Dental Association (CDA) criteria. The mean duration of follow-up was 37 months (range, 6 - 63 months) for the single crowns (n = 77) and 25 months (range, 6 - 68 months) for the 3-unit FDPs (n = 70). Data were descriptively analyzed to determine the types and rates of complications based on USPHS and CDA criteria. The Kaplan-Meier survival estimation method was used to determine the cumulative survival and success rates of the prostheses (α=0.05). Differences in clinical outcomes (survival or failure) according to tooth vitality, luting cement, and location were statistically analyzed using cross-tabulations and Х2 test (α=0.05). RESULTS The Kaplan-Meier cumulative survival rate was estimated as 96% for the Zi 3-unit FDPs after 5.5 years, and 90% for the Zi single crowns after 4.8 years. The 5-year estimated success rate was 68% for both 3-unit FDPs and single crowns. Seven (9.1%) 77Zi single crowns and 70 2 (2.9%) Zi 3-unit FDPs were recorded as failures with occlusal roughness being the most commonly-observed complication (crowns: 4 [5.6%]; 3-unit FDPs: 8 [11.4%]). In terms of clinical outcomes, statistically significant differences were found between all included vital and non-vital teeth (p = .006), and cement types (p = .028). Taking single crowns alone, significant differences in clinical outcomes according to tooth vitality were noted (p = .036), but not for PFDPs. The location of the prostheses did not produce any significant differences in the clinical outcomes, for both prostheses types independently or combined (p > .05). CONCLUSIONS The estimated cumulative survival rates in this study for single crowns and 3-unit Zi FDPs concurred with the ranges reported in systematic reviews. Zi-based prostheses on vital teeth produced better clinical outcomes than those placed on non-vital teeth, and type of luting cement influenced the final clinical outcome. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Zi crowns and 3-unit PFDPs fabricated using the specific CAD-CAM system used in the controlled environment of this study showed good clinical performance with minimal veneer porcelain chipping. Root canal treated teeth seem to be at higher risk for failure of Zi prostheses compared with vital teeth.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review was to compare the clinical performance of lithium disilicate (LDS) and zirconia (Z) single crowns manufactured by computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems using intraoral optical scanners (IOS). MATERIALS AND METHODS An electronic search for articles published between January 2012 and January 2022 in the English language was performed with the Medline/Pubmed database under the guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systemic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA). The specific search terms used were "zirconia", "lithium disilicate", "CAD/CAM", "intraoral optical scanner", and "survival". RESULTS The initial electronic search resulted in 278 articles. Most of the resulting articles were excluded, six clinical studies addressing the clinical outcomes of Z and LDS crowns fitted the inclusion criteria and were selected for review. Of these six studies, three were randomised controlled trials, two were retrospective studies, and one was a prospective study. To quantify the clinical performance of the crowns several parameters were recorded, including fractures, endodontic complications, periodontal complications, technical complications, aesthetic complications, and biological complications. It was noted that the most common technical complication of Z and LDS crowns was chipping at a rate of 1.4% and 5% respectively. Regarding Z crowns, aesthetic concerns were the most frequently observed complication. CONCLUSION The outcomes of this systematic review indicate that Z and LDS crowns display a similar incidence of periodontal and endodontic complications when compared to metal-ceramic crowns, suggesting that these all-ceramic materials are viable alternatives. The incidence of chipping was higher in LDS crowns compared to other materials, while Z crowns were inferior in terms of aesthetics.

Abstract
All-ceramic fixed dental prostheses (FDPs) tend to fracture in the connector areas, due to the concentration of tensile stresses. This study aimed to evaluate the role of connector height on the stress distribution of a posterior three-unit implant-supported all-ceramic FDP using finite element analysis (FEA). Two titanium dental implants, their abutments, screws, and a three-unit all-ceramic FDP were scanned using a micro-CT scanner. Three 3D models with altered distal connector heights (3, 4, and 5 mm) were generated and analyzed on ABAQUS FEA software. The maximum principal stress values in MPa observed for each model with different connector heights and their respective locations (MA = mesial abutment; DA = distal abutment; F = framework; V = veneer) were: 3 mm—219 (MA), 88 (DA), 11 (F), 16 (V); 4 mm—194 (MA), 82 (DA), 8 (F), 18 (V); 5 mm—194 (MA), 80 (DA), 8 (F), and 18 (V). All the assembled models demonstrated the peak stresses at the neck area on the mesial abutments. The connector height had a significant influence on the stress distribution of the prosthesis. The models with higher distal connectors (4 and 5 mm) had a lower and more uniform distribution of maximum principal stresses (except for the veneer layer) when compared with the model with the smallest distal connector.

Abstract
The prosthesis must have good survival despite being functional for at least 5-10 years. This makes sure that the replacement of missing teeth does not become a repeated expense. Of 579 identified articles, 15 met the inclusion criteria for systematic review. Missing teeth replacement materials are divided into two groups: porcelain fused to metal and all ceramics. Data related to survival rates as well as the most common mode of failure is observed from both groups. It was observed that porcelain fused to metal prostheses had an approximately 99.5% survival rate and an approximately 92% survival rate for all-ceramic tooth-supported prostheses after five years of insertion. Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) prostheses had a better survival rate after five years of insertion as compared to all-ceramic prostheses. Porcelain fused to metal should be the treatment of choice for dentists and patients when missing teeth need to be fixed.

Abstract
To evaluate the effect of fatigue and aging on the crystalline content and reliability of a zirconia-toughened-alumina (ZTA) composite compared to its individual counterpart materials (3Y-TZP and Al2O3). Thirty-six disc-shaped specimens per group were obtained to comply with ISO 6872:2015. Crystalline content, microstructure and reliability of experimental groups were evaluated in four stages: 1) immediate; 2) aged; 3) fatigued; 4) aged + fatigue. Aging was performed in autoclave and Step-Stress-Accelerated-Life-Testing (SSALT) was performed using three stress profiles. Weibull statistics were used to determine Weibull parameters and life-expectancy. A significant increase in monoclinic phase in 3Y-TZP was observed after aging (19.31%), fatigue (17.88%) and aging + fatigue (55.81%), while ZTA evidenced minimal variation among all conditions (<5.69%). 3Y-TZP presented higher reliability than ZTA at 300 and 500 MPa, and ZTA outperformed Al2O3 at the same stress missions. None of the ceramics yielded acceptable reliability at 800 MPa. A higher characteristic strength was observed for 3Y-TZP, followed by ZTA and Al2O3. While after aging ZTA and Al2O3 remained stable, 3Y-TZP exhibited a significant increase in the characteristic stress. Aging did not affect the reliability of ZTA and Al2O3. 3Y-TZP demonstrated an increase in monoclinic content and characteristic strength after aging.

Abstract
Objectives. This in vitro study is aimed at assessing the oral all-ceramic materials energy transmission and temperature changes after Er:YAG laser irradiation of monolithic zirconia all-ceramic materials with varying optical properties. Materials and Methods. Two monolithic zirconia materials, Zenostar T and X-CERA TT (monolithic Zirconia), were studied. Specimens were divided into four groups, with a thickness of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 mm, respectively. The chemical elemental composition of the two materials was determined using X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The light transmittance of specimens with different thicknesses was measured using a spectrophotometer at three wavelength ranges: 200–380, 380–780, and 780–2500 nm. Irradiation with Er:YAG laser was performed, and the resultant temperature changes were measured using a thermocouple thermometer. Results. Compositional analysis indicated that Si content in X-CERA TT was higher than that in Zenostar T. The light transmittance of both materials decreased as specimen thickness increased. Er:YAG laser irradiation led to temperature increase at both Zenostar T (26.4°C–81.7°C) and X-CERA TT (23.9°C–53.5°C) specimens. Both optical transmittance and temperature changes after Er:YAG laser irradiation were consistent with exponential distribution against different thickness levels. Conclusion. Er:YAG laser penetration energy and resultant temperature changes were mainly determined by the thickness and composition of the examined monolithic zirconia materials.

Abstract
PURPOSE To test the fracture resistance of maxillary canine to canine fixed partial denture with four missing incisors, with increasing anterior-cantilevers of the pontics and varying connector sizes. MATERIAL AND METHODS Two 3D-printed titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V) models mimicking a maxillary canine to canine fixed partial denture (FPD) with four pontics replacing the incisors were used as master models. Zirconia FPDs were digitally designed and milled with two different connector sizes (9 and 12 mm2 ) each with three different anterior cantilevers (7, 10, and 13 mm) accounting for 6 test groups. Seven samples were milled for each group generating a total of 42 samples. The Zi FPDs were cemented on the titanium model using resin modified glass ionomer cement and the model fixated to a variable angle vice. A sinusoidal cyclic wave form load from 50N to 280N was applied using a universal testing machine at a frequency of 30 cycles per second and a total of 5 million cycles. RESULTS The results of Fisher's exact tests showed that the difference in the proportion of fractured versus non fractured fixed partial dentures was not statistically significant when comparing the 9 with the 12 mm2 connector size (p = 1.00), as well as when comparing the six test groups (p = 0.2338); on the other hand, it proved to be statistically significant when comparing the 7 mm cantilever with the 10 and 13 mm cantilevers combined (p = 0.0407) indicating that a 7 mm anterior spread of the pontics showed a significantly greater proportion of fixed partial dentures that fractured. CONCLUSIONS Fracture susceptibility was not a function of cantilever length in this testing configuration for anterior FPDs. Retainer crown thickness seems to be a more important parameter than connector size thickness. Based on the results, a smaller connector size (9 mm2 ) can be used to improve the esthetics of pontics in long span anterior FPDs. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
