Lower serum zinc levels are associated with unhealthy metabolic status in normal-weight adults: The 2010 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

Relationship Between Zinc, Selenium, and Magnesium Status and Markers of Metabolically Healthy and Unhealthy Obesity Phenotypes

Our objective was to investigate the relationship between zinc, selenium, and magnesium status and markers of metabolically healthy and unhealthy obesity phenotypes. This was a cross-sectional study with 140 women: metabolically healthy obese women (n = 35), metabolically unhealthy obese women (n = 28), and normal-weight women (n = 77). We have calculated the body mass index, waist-hip ratio, waist-height ratio and some adiposity indices. Additionally, we evaluated endocrine-metabolic parameters and estimated the dietary intake of energy, macronutrients, zinc, selenium, and magnesium. The mineral concentrations in plasma, erythrocytes, and urine were assessed. In obese patients, there was a significant decrease in dietary zinc, selenium, and magnesium intake per kilogram of body weight, as well as lower mineral concentrations in both plasma and erythrocytes. Additionally, these patients exhibited higher urinary mineral levels compared to the control group, regardless of whether they had healthy or unhealthy phenotypes. We observed a significant correlation between deficiencies in zinc, selenium, and magnesium and obesity-associated metabolic disorders, including dyslipidemias and redox status disturbances. This study highlights a connection between deficiencies in zinc, selenium, and magnesium and metabolic disorders linked to obesity, including dyslipidemias, alterations in redox status, and thyroid hormonal dysfunction.

Mediation effect of serum zinc on insulin secretion inhibited by methyl tert-butyl ether in gas station workers

Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), a type of gasoline additive, has been found to affect insulin function and glucose homeostasis in animal experiments, but there is still no epidemiological evidence. Zinc (Zn) is a key regulatory element of insulin secretion and function, and Zn homeostasis can be disrupted by MTBE exposure through inducing oxidative stress. Therefore, we suspected that Zn might be involved and play an important role in the process of insulin secretion inhibited by MTBE exposure. In this study, we recruited 201 male subjects including occupational and non-occupational MTBE exposure from Anhui Province, China in 2019. Serum insulin and functional analog fibroblast growth factor 1 (FGF1) and blood MTBE were detected by Elisa and headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry. According to MTBE internal exposure level, the workers were divided into low- and high-exposed groups and found that the serum insulin level in the high-exposed group was significantly lower than that in the low-exposed group (p = 0.003) while fasting plasma glucose (FPG) level increased obviously in the high-exposed group compared to the low-exposed group (p = 0.001). Further analysis showed that MTBE exposure level was positively correlated with FPG level, but negatively correlated with serum insulin level, which suggested that the FPG level increase might be related to the decrease of serum insulin level induced by MTBE exposure. The results of further mediation effect analysis showed that changes in serum zinc levels played a major intermediary role in the process of insulin secretion inhibition and blood glucose elevation caused by MTBE exposure. In addition, a significant negative correlation was found between MTBE exposure and serum Zn level, which might play a strong mediating effect on the inhibition of insulin secretion induced by MTBE exposure. In conclusion, our study provided evidence that MTBE could inhibit insulin secretion and interfere with Zn metabolism in gas station workers for the first time, and found that Zn might play an important mediation effect during the process of inhibiting insulin secretion and interfering with glucose metabolism induced by MTBE exposure.

Higher ratio of serum uric acid to serum creatinine (SUA/SCr) increases the risk of metabolic unhealthy phenotype

BACKGROUND AND AIM

It is very important to understand which factors play roles in switching from a healthy to an unhealthy metabolism. It is unclear if SUA/SCr is an independent risk factor for metabolic unhealthy phenotype. We examined whether SUA/SCr is associated with an increased risk for metabolic unhealthy phenotype in the Chinese population.

METHODS AND RESULTS

As many as 3158 subjects aged 25-75 years who had a metabolic healthy phenotype at baseline were included in the retrospective cohort study. They were assigned to four groups based on the quartile of SUA/SCr. We compared the demographic and clinical characteristics among the four groups. The correlation between SUA/SCr and the risk of metabolic unhealthy phenotype in the overall population and stratified by subgroups was examined by logistic regression analyses. Greater SUA/SCr values were correlated with greater BMI, systolic and diastolic BP, TC, TG, RBC, WBC, HB, ALT, SUA and eGFR. During the two-year follow-up, 632 of the study subjects (20.01%) developed new-onset metabolic unhealthy phenotype from the total of 3158 study subjects. A statistically significant increase in the rates of metabolic unhealthy phenotype was observed with increasing SUA/SCr levels within each group. After multivariate adjustment, the adjusted ORs and 95% CIs were 1.44 (1.03-2.00) and 2.11 (1.52-2.94) in the Q3 group and Q4 group, respectively.

CONCLUSION

SUA/SCr was positively related to the risk of metabolic unhealthy phenotype in the Chinese subjects, suggesting the potential of SUA/SCr to serve as an independent risk predictor in the development of metabolic unhealthy phenotype.

Association between female circulating heavy metal concentration and abortion: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Objective

This study aimed to evaluate the association between blood heavy metal (zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd)) concentrations and spontaneous abortion (SA) and recurrent pregnancy loss (RPL) and explore the possible endocrine dysfunction associated with it.

Methods

A literature search was performed in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases up to April 2023. The overall effects were expressed as the standard mean difference (SMD). Subgroup analysis was performed according to the type of abortion (SA or RPL). Stata 16.0 was utilized for data analysis.

Results

Based on the integrated findings, abortion women showed significantly lower Zn (SMD = -1.05, 95% CI: -1.74 to -0.36, p = 0.003) and Cu concentrations (SMD = -1.42, 95% CI: -1.97 to -0.87, p <0.001) and higher Pb (SMD = 1.47, 95% CI: 0.89-2.05, p <0.001) and Cd concentrations (SMD = 1.15, 95% CI: 0.45-1.85, p = 0.001) than normal pregnant women. Subgroup analysis showed that Zn and Cu deficiency and Cd and Pb exposure were significantly (p <0.05) associated with RPL, whereas Cu deficiency and Cd and Pb exposure were significantly (p <0.05) associated with SA.

Conclusion

Zn and Cu deficiencies and Pb and Cd exposure were associated with abortion. Endocrine dysfunction, such as insulin resistance, vitamin D insufficiency, and abnormal thyroid and sex hormone concentrations, is thought to be involved in heavy metal-related abortion.

Dietary Consumption on Glycemic Control Among Prediabetes: A Review of the Literature

Introduction

Prediabetes is a condition that, if left unaddressed, can lead to various complications, such as neuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy. Among the critical factors contributing to the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus, dietary choices stand out as particularly significant.

Objective

Consequently, our objective is to examine the latest research findings concerning dietary consumption and its impact on glycemic control in individuals with prediabetes.

Methods

A literature review of randomized controlled trials was performed using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and ScienceDirect with searches conducted from January 2019 to 2023. The primary reviewer assessed the quality of the selected studies for bias risk using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal method for randomized controlled trials. Initially, 975 articles were identified through the search, but after applying the inclusion criteria, only 9 articles were ultimately selected.

Results

The review found that a carrageenan-free diet, yogurt with Lactobacillus plantarum OLL2712, Allium hookeri extract (AHE), and delta-tocotrienol improve HbA1C levels. However, salmon, zinc supplement, and balanced deep-sea water were not effective on HbA1C. In addition, studies on the effectiveness of vitamin D in controlling blood glucose levels are inconsistent.

Conclusion

Nurses can enhance patient outcomes through collaborative efforts to create individualized dietary strategies. These strategies may encompass the adoption of a carrageenan-free diet, the inclusion of L plantarum OLL2712-enriched yogurt, the utilization of AHE, and the integration of delta-tocotrienol into the dietary plan. This approach is particularly applicable to ambulatory care nurses, health supervisors, and primary care providers.

Effects of magnesium picolinate, zinc picolinate, and selenomethionine co-supplementation on reproductive hormones, and glucose and lipid metabolism-related protein expressions in male rats fed a high-fat diet

This study aimed to examine the impacts of the magnesium picolinate (MgPic), zinc picolinate (ZnPic), and selenomethionine (SeMet) alone or as a combination on blood metabolites, oxidative enzymes, reproductive hormones, and glucose and lipid metabolism-related protein expressions in Wistar rats fed a high-fed diet (HFD). The rats were fed either a control, HFD, or HFD supplemented with a single (MgPic, ZnPic, SeMet) or two or three organic mineral combinations. Body weights, visceral fat, serum glucose, insulin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, leptin, malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations as well as liver sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), liver X receptor alpha (LXRα), ATP citrate lyase (ACLY), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) levels increased, while serum testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) concentrations along with liver nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) levels declined in HFD rats (P < 0.05). Supplementing each organic mineral, but particularly the combination of HFD + MgPic + ZnPic + SeMet reversed the responses with various degrees. None of the organic elements alone or as a combination of two exerted a prominent effect on parameters measured. Although not additive or synergistic, the combination of all organic minerals added to HFD (HFD + MgPic + ZnPic + SeMet) provided the greatest responses.

Association of Serum Zinc Levels in Overweight and Obesity

Low levels of zinc (Zn) have adverse effects on physiological and metabolic functions in humans, especially in processes linked with obesity. In this work, serum Zn levels and their associations with biochemical parameters (glucose, triglycerides, and total cholesterol), sex, and body mass index (BMI) were determined. The distribution of the study sample by sex was homogeneous: 52.6% were women and 47.4% were men. Women had higher BMI and Zn levels (normal weight and obesity) than men, but the differences in BMI and serum Zn levels by sex were not significant (p > 0.05). Nevertheless, the results obtained showed a decrease in serum Zn levels in overweight and obese individuals (p < 0.05) and a negative correlation between BMI and serum Zn levels (r = - 0.663 and p < 0.001); additionally, a significant correlation was identified between cholesterol and triglyceride values (r = 0.493 and p < 0.001). In conclusion, this study demonstrated decreased serum Zn levels in overweight and obese individuals.

Association between urinary metals levels and metabolic phenotypes in overweight and obese individuals

Epidemiologic studies suggest that circulating metals from the natural environment are linked with cardiometabolic health. However, few studies examined the relationship between multiple metals exposure and metabolic phenotypes, especially in obese individuals. We conducted a cross-sectional study to explore the association between 23 urinary metals and metabolic phenotypes in 1392 overweight and obese individuals (592 males, 800 females, mean age 43.1 ± 9.8 years). Participants were classified as metabolically unhealthy if they had ≥2 of the following metabolic abnormalities: elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting blood glucose, elevated triglycerides, and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Odds ratios (ORs) of unhealthy metabolic phenotypes for metal levels categorized into tertiles were assessed using logistic regression models. Five metals (barium, copper, iron, uranium, and zinc) were associated with unhealthy metabolic phenotypes in single-metal models, while in the multiple-metal model, only zinc and zinc-copper ratio remained significant. The ORs (95% CIs) comparing extreme tertiles were 2.57 (1.69, 3.89) for zinc and 1.68 (1.24, 2.27) for zinc-copper ratio after adjustment for confounders (both p-trends were <0.001). The numbers of metabolic abnormalities significantly increased with the levels of zinc and the zinc-copper ratio increased. Similar associations were observed with metabolic syndrome risk. High levels of urinary zinc were positively associated with elevated fasting blood glucose (p-trend < 0.001) and elevated triglycerides (p-trend = 0.003). The results suggest that urinary zinc and zinc-copper ratio are positively associated with increased risk of unhealthy metabolic phenotype. Further prospective studies with a larger sample size are required to verify these findings.

Hypovitaminosis D Is Associated with Some Metabolic Indices in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus

BACKGROUND

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a pregnancy complication, is defined as any degree of glucose intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. Vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency has recently been recognized as a contributing factor to the pathogenesis of GDM, and this link might be associated with hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, and inflammation, which are implicated in GDM.

OBJECTIVES

This study aims at investigating the relationship between vitamin D, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), insulin, zinc, ferritin, and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) in GDM.

METHOD

A case-control study in which 80 women attending the antenatal clinic of University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Nigeria, were recruited; the women were grouped into controls (40 nondiabetic pregnant women) and cases (40 pregnant women with GDM). Blood samples were taken at the second trimester, and metabolites were quantified by standard laboratory methods. Student's t test and Pearson correlation were used to compare variables and determine the relationship between variables, respectively.

RESULTS

Results showed significant (p < 0.05) low levels of serum vitamin D and zinc, and significant (p < 0.05) higher levels of FPG and serum insulin, ferritin, and CRP in the GDM group compared to the control group. In the GDM group, a positive weak relationship was observed between vitamin D and zinc (r = 0.18, p < 0.05), while vitamin D was inversely correlated with FPG, serum insulin, ferritin, and CRP (r = -0.23, -0.21, -0.20, -0.46, respectively, p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

This study suggests that hypovitaminosis D might be associated with glucose intolerance, insulin insensitivity, and inflammation, which are factors implicated in the development and progression of GDM.

Specialized hypocholesterolemic foods: Ingredients, technology, effects

Introduction. Overweight and obesity are leading risk factors for metabolic syndrome (MS). From 20 to 35% of Russian people have this condition, depending on their age. MS is a precursor of cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, diabetic nephropathy, and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis. Specialized foods (SFs) with hypocholesteremic effects are an important component of the diet therapy for MS patients. Creating local SFs to optimize the nutritional status of MS patients and prevent related diseases is a highly promising area of research. The aim of our study was to develop the formulation and technology of SFs and evaluate their effectiveness in MS treatment. Study objects and methods. The objects of the study were food ingredients and SFs. Safety indicators and micronutrient contents were determined by standard methods, whereas nutritional and energy values and amino acid contents were determined by calculation. Results and discussion. Based on medical requirements, we selected functional ingredients and developed a formulation and technology of SFs with an optimized protein, fat, and carbohydrate composition. The formulation included essential micronutrients and biologically active substances with a desirable physiological effect. Clinical trials involved 15 MS patients aged from 27 to 59. For two weeks, they had a low-calorie standard diet with one serving of SFs in the form of a drink instead of a second breakfast. The patients showed a significant improvement in anthropometric indicators. Blood serum tests revealed decreased contents of total cholesterol (by 16.9%), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (by 15.3%), and triglycerides (by 27.9%). Conclusion. We developed technical specifications and produced a pilot batch of SFs. The trials showed an improvement of lipid metabolism in the MS patients who were taking SFs as part of their diet therapy.

Altered serum Zinc and Copper in Iranian Adults who were of normal weight but metabolically obese

Metabolically obese normal weight (MONW) individuals are potentially at increased risk of developing metabolic syndrome. Serum zinc and copper concentrations were assessed in individuals with MONW to determine whether MONW is associated with altered serum zinc and/or copper status. Normal weight subjects (total n = 2419; 1298 men and 1121 women), were recruited as part of Mashhad Stroke and Heart Association Disorder (MASHAD) Study cohort. They were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of MetS, defined using IDF criteria. Serum zinc and copper concentrations were determined by atomic absorption. Of the 2419 normal weight adults, 377 had MetS. Of this group, 53.7% and 49.7% had a serum zinc <70 µg/dl (Q1) (p = 0.001) or a serum copper <79 µg/dl (Q1) respectively. Furthermore, 27.3% had a serum copper >131 µg/dl (Q4) (p = 0.034), and 18.8% had a serum zinc >95 µg/dl (Q4). Logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the odds ratio (OR) for an association of serum zinc, copper and zinc to copper ratio with MetS in normal weight subjects. The subjects with a serum zinc >95 µg/dl (Q4) had 0.386 [OR: 0.614(95%CI 0.457–0.823)] lower chance of MetS (p = 0.001) and the subjects with a serum copper >131 (Q4) had OR 1.423 (95% CI: 1.09–1.857) higher chance of MetS (p = 0.009). These data remained significant after adjustment for age and sex, for serum zinc and copper, respectively. Furthermore, our results strongly suggested that zinc and copper were the independent risk factor for metabolic syndrome in normal weight subjects. There is an imbalance between serum copper and zinc concentrations among individuals with MONW when compared with normal BMI individuals without MetS. This may increase the risk of individuals with MONW developing conditions associated with this imbalance, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Decreasing the main maternal and fetal complications in women undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) trained by nutrition and healthy eating practices during pregnancy

PURPOSE

In vitro fertilization (IVF) can lead to undesirable consequences for pregnant women and their newborns. Reducing the adverse maternal (mainly, gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and preeclampsia (PE)), and fetal outcomes in IVF-pregnant women (IVF-PW) was aimed with the correct training of nutrition principles during pregnancy.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A quasi-experimental clinical trial with 170 IVF-PW in intervention and control groups was conducted. The subjects before the dietary intervention completed questionnaires of nutritional and lifestyle and 24-h food recall. The intervention group was trained with the diet modification programs from early (12-16 weeks) to late (week 34) pregnancy in six weekly, 15-20-min sessions. The GDM diagnosis was based on 75-g OGTT and FBS tests, respectively, in 24-28 weeks' gestation. Other adverse maternal (e.g. PE, cesarean delivery, and preterm delivery (<37 weeks)), and fetal (e.g. intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR), birth weight, and fetal viability) outcomes were also monitored. The dataset was assessed using both inferential and descriptive statistics.

RESULTS

A diet modification program with an increased intake of lactose, fiber, and some minerals (e.g. magnesium and zinc) and vitamins (e.g. B3 and B5) in conjunction with a lower intake rate of glucose and lipid could control the prevalence of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes in IVF-PW. Although the GDM reduction in the two intervention (8.2%) and control (20.0%) groups was statistically insignificant, there was a significant difference in PE prevalence at a lower rate (39.0%) in the intervention group than the control. No significant difference in cesarean delivery (94.1-95.2%), and preterm delivery (45.9%) between the two groups was found. The IUGR (24.7-25.9%), birth weight (2.791-2.820 kg), and fetal viability (95.3-97.6%) also did not change significantly after the healthy eating practices during pregnancy.

CONCLUSIONS

Diet-based interventions in IVF-PW during pregnancy were efficient in improving the outcomes for both mother and baby.

A Brief Overview from the Physiological and Detrimental Roles of Zinc Homeostasis via Zinc Transporters in the Heart

Zinc (mostly as free/labile Zn²⁺) is an essential structural constituent of many proteins, including enzymes in cellular signaling pathways via functioning as an important signaling molecule in mammalian cells. In cardiomyocytes at resting condition, intracellular labile Zn²⁺ concentration ([Zn²⁺]_i) is in the nanomolar range, whereas it can increase dramatically under pathological conditions, including hyperglycemia, but the mechanisms that affect its subcellular redistribution is not clear. Therefore, overall, very little is known about the precise mechanisms controlling the intracellular distribution of labile Zn²⁺, particularly via Zn²⁺ transporters during cardiac function under both physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Literature data demonstrated that [Zn²⁺]_i homeostasis in mammalian cells is primarily coordinated by Zn²⁺ transporters classified as ZnTs (SLC30A) and ZIPs (SLC39A). To identify the molecular mechanisms of diverse functions of labile Zn²⁺ in the heart, the recent studies focused on the discovery of subcellular localization of these Zn²⁺ transporters in parallel to the discovery of novel physiological functions of [Zn²⁺]_i in cardiomyocytes. The present review summarizes the current understanding of the role of [Zn²⁺]_i changes in cardiomyocytes under pathological conditions, and under high [Zn²⁺]_i and how Zn²⁺ transporters are important for its subcellular redistribution. The emerging importance and the promise of some Zn²⁺ transporters for targeted cardiac therapy against pathological stimuli are also provided. Taken together, the review clearly outlines cellular control of cytosolic Zn²⁺ signaling by Zn²⁺ transporters, the role of Zn²⁺ transporters in heart function under hyperglycemia, the role of Zn²⁺ under increased oxidative stress and ER stress, and their roles in cancer are discussed.

Zinc intake and status in Austria in the light of different reference values

Zinc has been identified as a critical micronutrient also in high-income countries. There is still some uncertainty about the evaluation of zinc sufficiency due to divergent daily intake reference values. We wanted to exemplify this issue using data from the Austrian Study on Nutritional Status 2012. Plasma zinc concentrations were measured in a nationally representative sample of 872 persons aged 6-80 years (55.5 % female). Dietary zinc intake was estimated from two 24h dietary recalls. Additionally, parameters of the antioxidative status (plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidative capacity) and activities of alkaline phosphatase (AP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px)) were determined. Zinc status was marginal in schoolchildren (40 % of boys and 22 % of girls) and in elderly (28 % of men and 33 % of women). Dietary zinc intake was also unsatisfactory in these groups with 38 % of boys and 32 % of girls and 64.5 % of older men below the nationally recommended intake levels. However, the adequacy of zinc intake varied with different reference values. Adults were more likely to meet the D-A-CH reference values and those from the European Food Safety Authority than the recommendations of the International Zinc Nutrition Consultative Group (IZiNCG) and the Institute of Medicine, whereas children met the IZiNCG values best. Zinc status correlated weakly with AP activity (r = -0.298, p < 0.001) and some antioxidant status markers (CAT, MDA, GSH-PX, SOD), especially in the elderly (MDA: r = -0.527, p < 0.001, and SOD: r = -0.466, p = 0.002). Our results suggest a suboptimal zinc supply in Austria particularly among schoolchildren and older adults.

Association between serum uric acid, high sensitive C-reactive protein and pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance in patients with metabolic syndrome

There is persuasive evidence that oxidative stress and inflammation are features of the metabolic syndrome (MetS). We have investigated the relationship between serum pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB), serum uric acid, and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) in 7,208 participants from the MASHAD study cohort, who were categorized as having MetS, or not, using International Diabetes Foundation (IDF) criteria. Serum hs-CRP was measured by Polyethylene glycol (PEG)-enhanced immunoturbidimetry method using an Alycon analyzer (ABBOTT, Chicago, IL, USA). A colorimetric method was used to determine serum PAB. Serum PAB values were significantly higher in the individuals with MetS compared to those without (P < 0.001). Furthermore, there was a step-wise increase in mean serum PAB concentrations as the number of components of the MetS increased. The combination of features of MetS had different association with serum PAB and hs-CRP. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that body mass index (BMI, B = 2.04, P < 0.001), physical activity level (PAL, B = 18.728, P = 0.001), serum uric acid (B = -1.545, P = 0.003), and serum C-reactive protein (B = 0.663, P < 0.001) were associated with serum PAB in individuals with MetS. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that serum PAB (B = 0.002, P < 0.001, CI = 1.001-1.003), serum C-reactive protein (B = 0.007, P < 0.015, CI = 1.001-1.013), and serum uric acid (B = 0.207, P < 0.001, CI = 1.186-1.277) were all significantly associated with MetS. Serum PAB was strongly associated with serum uric acid and serum hs-CRP. Moreover, serum PAB as well as serum uric acid and serum hs-CRP were independently associated with MetS. Serum and dietary zinc and copper in Iranian girls

OBJECTIVE

Girls with micronutrient deficiencies may have impaired growth and development, and furthermore this may also impact on their childbearing. We have investigated the relationship between serum zinc and copper concentrations, dietary zinc and copper intake and anthropometric and demographic parameters, and cardiovascular risk factors, in 408 girls living in northeastern Iran.

METHODS

A total of 408 healthy girls, aged 12-18 years old, were included in our study. Serum zinc and copper concentrations were measured by flame atomic absorption (Varian AA240FS) and zinc and copper intake were assessed using a 3-day dietary record.

RESULTS

There was a weak correlation between serum and dietary zinc intake (r = 0.117, p = 0.018). The correlation between serum and dietary copper approached significance (r = -0.094, p = 0.056). The mean serum zinc and copper concentrations were 14.61 ± 2.71 μmol/L and 19.48 ± 8.01 μmol/L respectively. Height, total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) were positively correlated with serum copper concentration. Subjects with high serum copper concentrations (>24 μmol/L) were found to have a significantly higher fasting blood glucose (FBG) compared to subjects with normal, or low serum copper concentrations (p = 0.033). Girls who were in the 5th percentile or greater for height were found to have higher serum copper concentrations than girls in other height categories.

CONCLUSION

There was a weak relationship between dietary and serum concentrations of zinc. Copper status was associated with anthropometric and biochemical parameters, including FBG and lipid profile. Further studies are required to define the role of copper in metabolic health.

Impact of Labile Zinc on Heart Function: From Physiology to Pathophysiology

Zinc plays an important role in biological systems as bound and histochemically reactive labile Zn²⁺. Although Zn²⁺ concentration is in the nM range in cardiomyocytes at rest and increases dramatically under stimulation, very little is known about precise mechanisms controlling the intracellular distribution of Zn²⁺ and its variations during cardiac function. Recent studies are focused on molecular and cellular aspects of labile Zn²⁺ and its homeostasis in mammalian cells and growing evidence clarified the molecular mechanisms underlying Zn²⁺-diverse functions in the heart, leading to the discovery of novel physiological functions of labile Zn²⁺ in parallel to the discovery of subcellular localization of Zn²⁺-transporters in cardiomyocytes. Additionally, important experimental data suggest a central role of intracellular labile Zn²⁺ in excitation-contraction coupling in cardiomyocytes by shaping Ca²⁺ dynamics. Cellular labile Zn²⁺ is tightly regulated against its adverse effects through either Zn²⁺-transporters, Zn²⁺-binding molecules or Zn²⁺-sensors, and, therefore plays a critical role in cellular signaling pathways. The present review summarizes the current understanding of the physiological role of cellular labile Zn²⁺ distribution in cardiomyocytes and how a remodeling of cellular Zn²⁺-homeostasis can be important in proper cell function with Zn²⁺-transporters under hyperglycemia. We also emphasize the recent investigations on Zn²⁺-transporter functions from the standpoint of human heart health to diseases together with their clinical interest as target proteins in the heart under pathological condition, such as diabetes.

Zinc status is associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, lipid, and glucose metabolism

A number of studies have reported that zinc plays a substantial role in the development of metabolic syndrome, taking part in the regulation of cytokine expression, suppressing inflammation, and is also required to activate antioxidant enzymes that scavenge reactive oxygen species, reducing oxidative stress. Zinc also plays a role in the correct functioning of lipid and glucose metabolism, regulating and forming the expression of insulin. In numerous studies, zinc supplementation has been found to improve blood pressure, glucose, and LDL cholesterol serum level. Deeper knowledge of zinc’s properties may help in treating metabolic syndrome, thus protecting against stroke and angina pectoris, and ultimately against death.

Mediterranean diet, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) style diet, and metabolic health in U.S. adults

BACKGROUND & AIMS

There is sparse evidence on the relationship between the Mediterranean diet, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) style diet, and metabolic health, especially comparing cardiometabolic phenotypes among in normal weight and obese populations. We aimed to investigate the association of the Mediterranean diet scores (MDS) and DASH index with metabolically healthy obese (MHO) and metabolically obese normal weight (MONW) phenotypes in a representative U.S.

POPULATION

METHODS

MDS and DASH index were calculated using dietary data from 2767 adults aged 20-90 years without any prior diagnosis of cancer or cardiovascular disease from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III, 1988-1994. MHO and MONW individuals were identified using fasting glucose, insulin resistance, blood pressure, triglycerides, C-reactive protein, and high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol.

RESULTS

Higher MDS was associated with higher odds of MHO phenotype (odds ratio (OR)_{T3 vs T1}, 2.57 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.04-6.35]; P trend = 0.04), and higher DASH index was associated with lower odds of MONW phenotype (OR_{T3 vs T1,} 0.59 [95% CI, 0.38-0.93]; P trend = 0.03) only in the younger age group (<45 years for men or premenopausal women). No significant associations of MDS and DASH index with MHO and MONW phenotypes were observed in the older age group (≥45 years for men or postmenopausal women).

CONCLUSIONS

Adherence to Mediterranean diet or DASH style diet was favorably associated with MHO and MONW phenotypes only in the younger age group, suggesting that potential dietary intervention to prevent cardiometabolic disease differ by age group.
