Abstract
AIM This study aims to explore the association between declining lung function and depression in middle-aged and older adults, with a special focus on the mediating role of cognitive function. METHODS This study utilizes self-reported and physical examination data from 5345 individuals participating in the 2015 cycle of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to explore the role of cognitive function changes in mediating the effects of diminished lung function on depression among middle-aged and older adults. RESULTS Multivariate linear regression analysis revealed a positive correlation between pulmonary and cognitive functions (β = 0.003, 95% CI: 0.002∼0.003, P < 0.01) and a negative correlation between cognitive function and depression (β = -0.279, 95% CI: -0.330-0.228, P < 0.01). Cognitive function plays a mediating role in linking pulmonary function with depression, exhibiting a mediation effect of -0.0007 and a total effect of -0.0046, wherein the mediation effect contributes to 15.22% of the total effect. For females, the mediating effect of cognitive function was stronger (β = -0.0013, 95% CI: -0.0018∼-0.0008, P < 0.01) than it was for males (β = -0.0006, 95% CI: -0.0009∼-0.0003, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The study underscores the importance of monitoring lung and cognitive functions as interconnected factors contributing to the mental health of middle-aged and older adults. It suggests that interventions aimed at improving pulmonary health and cognitive function may help mitigate depressive symptoms among middle-aged and older adults. Further research is warranted to validate these findings across diverse cultural and demographic settings. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2024; 24: 1210-1217.

Abstract
As the COVID-19 pandemic persists, SARS-CoV-2 infection is increasingly associated with long-term neurological side effects including cognitive impairment, fatigue, depression, and anxiety, colloquially known as "long-COVID." While the full extent of long-COVID neuropathology across years or even decades is not yet known, we can perhaps take direction from long-standing research into other respiratory diseases, such as influenza, that can present with similar long-term neurological consequences. In this review, we highlight commonalities in the neurological impacts of influenza and COVID-19. We first focus on the common potential mechanisms underlying neurological sequelae of long-COVID and influenza, namely (1) viral neurotropism and (2) dysregulated peripheral inflammation. The latter, namely heightened peripheral inflammation leading to central nervous system dysfunction, is emerging as a shared mechanism in various peripheral inflammatory or inflammation-associated diseases and conditions. We then discuss historical and modern examples of influenza- and COVID-19-associated cognitive impairment, depression, anxiety, and fatigue, revealing key similarities in their neurological sequelae. Although we are learning that the effects of influenza and COVID differ somewhat in terms of their influence on the brain, as the impacts of long-COVID grow, such comparisons will likely prove valuable in guiding ongoing research into long-COVID, and perhaps foreshadow what could be in store for individuals with COVID-19 and their brain health.

Abstract
AIMS This study examined serum cytochrome P450-soluble epoxide hydrolase (CYP450-sEH) oxylipins and depressive symptoms together in relation to cognitive performance in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). METHODS Clinically cognitively normal T2DM individuals were recruited (NCT04455867). Depressive symptom severity was assessed using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II; total scores ≤13 indicated minimal depressive symptoms and ≥ 14 indicated significant depressive symptoms). Executive function and verbal memory were assessed. Fasting serum oxylipins were quantified by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass-spectrometry. RESULTS The study included 85 participants with minimal depressive symptoms and 27 with significant symptoms (mean age: 63.3 ± 9.8 years, 49 % women). In all participants, higher concentrations of linoleic acid derived sEH (12,13-dihydroxyoctadecamonoenoic acid; DiHOME) and CYP450 (12(13)-epoxyoctadecamonoenoic acid; EpOME) metabolites were associated with poorer executive function (F1,101 = 6.094, p = 0.015 and F1,101 = 5.598, p = 0.020, respectively). Concentrations of multiple sEH substrates interacted with depressive symptoms to predict 1) poorer executive function, including 9(10)-EpOME (F1,100 = 12.137, p < 0.001), 5(6)-epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (5(6)-EpETrE; F1,100 = 6.481, p = 0.012) and 11(12)-EpETrE (F1,100 = 4.409, p = 0.038), and 2) verbal memory, including 9(10)-EpOME (F1,100 = 4.286, p = 0.041), 5(6)-EpETrE (F1,100 = 6.845, p = 0.010), 11(12)-EpETrE (F1,100 = 3.981, p = 0.049) and 14(15)-EpETrE (F1,100 = 5.019, p = 0.027). CONCLUSIONS Associations of CYP450-sEH metabolites and depressive symptoms with cognition highlight the biomarker and therapeutic potential of the CYP450-sEH pathway in T2DM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to identify classes based on the trajectory of depressive symptoms and to examine the impact of trajectory classes of depressive symptoms on longitudinal changes in cognitive function in older adults with diabetes. METHODS This is a secondary data analysis of 572 older adults with diabetes using data from the 5th (2014) to 8th (2020) wave of the Korean longitudinal study of aging. Analysis of latent class growth and the effect of trajectories of depressive symptoms on cognitive function was examined using a latent growth curve model. This analysis has been found to be functional in change trajectories and in describing the direction of the trajectory. RESULTS The trajectory of depressive symptoms was classified into four classes: low-stable (36.89%), high-decreasing (20.28%), low-increasing (18.71%), and high-persistent (24.13%). Compared with the high-persistent class, higher initial levels of cognitive function were observed in the high-decreasing and low-stable classes. Compared with the high-persistent class, a slower rate of cognitive decline was observed in the low-stable class (B = 0.410, p = .021). CONCLUSIONS Continuous monitoring of depressive symptoms and early management of depressive symptoms for community-dwelling older adults with diabetes can help prevent the cognitive decline and delay the deterioration of cognitive function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Music interventions have beneficial effects on cognitive function and related risk factors, such as depressive symptoms and behavior of exercise participation. However, little research has been conducted on music's effects on people with type 2 diabetes, and evidence of the effect remains inconclusive in this population. OBJECTIVES Guided by the theory of music, mood, and movement (MMM), this exploratory study aimed to examine the direct and indirect effects of musical activity engagement, depressive symptoms, and physical activity on cognitive function in people with type 2 diabetes. METHODS The present study is a secondary data analysis using the cross-sectional data collected from the Memory, Attention, and Problem-Solving Skills for Persons With Diabetes trial conducted between 2021 and 2023. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires and a computerized cognitive assessment tool. A total of 189 people with type 2 diabetes and subjective cognitive decline were included in the study. Path analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS AMOS to examine the pathways of the proposed conceptual framework. RESULTS The study results partially support the MMM model for subjective cognitive function but not objective cognitive function. The path model demonstrated the significant direct effects of musical activity engagement on physical activity, physical activity on subjective cognitive function, and depressive symptoms on physical activity as well as on subjective cognitive function. There was a significant indirect effect of musical activity engagement on subjective cognitive function through physical activity-which fully mediated this relationship. However, no significant direct effect of musical activity engagement on depressive symptoms and subjective cognitive function was found. DISCUSSION The findings suggest that regular assessment of the presence of depressive symptoms and physical activity participation should be done in people with type 2 diabetes to identify potential modifiable factors and develop targeted interventions for cognitive health promotion. Also, our findings provide insights into the potential use of music to facilitate physical activity and manage cognitive health in people with type 2 diabetes. This study partially supports the MMM model; however, more research with a rigorous study design and larger sample size is needed to better understand the relationships among musical activity engagement, depressive symptoms, physical activity, and cognitive function.

Abstract
The growing incidence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and depression is a global public health issue. Alpiniae oxyphyllae Fructus (AOF) is a kind of medicinal and edible plant which be found with anti-diabetic property, and could improve depression-like symptoms. This study aimed to screen active targets and potential mechanisms of AOF in treating DM with depression. Injection of streptozotocin (STZ) and exposure to chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) for 4 weeks were used to conduct the DM with depression mice model. Behavioral tests, indexes of glucose metabolism, monoamine neurotransmitters, inflammatory cytokine and oxidative stress were measured. Histopathological change of hippocampus tissue was observing by HE and Nissl staining. UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap/MS, network pharmacology and molecular docking were used to explore the chemical components and mechanisms of AOF on the DM with depression. AOF showed a reversed effect on body weight in DM with depression mice. Glucose metabolism and insulin resistance could be improved by treatment of AOF. In addition, AOF could alleviate depression-like behaviors based on the results of behavior tests and monoamine neurotransmitters. AOF also attenuated STZ-CUMS induced neuron injury in hippocampus. Next, a total of 61 chemical components were identified in the UPLC-Q-Exactive Orbitrap/MS analysis of the extract of AOF. Network pharmacology analysis suggested that 12 active components and 227 targets were screened from AOF, and 1802 target genes were screened from DM with depression, finally 126 intersection target genes were obtained. Drug-disease targets network was constructed and implied that the top five components with a higher degree value includes quercetin, nootkatone, baicalein, (-)-epicatechin and nootkatol. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network showed that MAPK1, FOS, AKT1, IL6 and TP53 may be the core intersection targets. The mechanism of the effect of AOF on DM with depression was analyzed through gene ontology (GO), and kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis, mainly involved in AGE/RAGE, PI3K/AKT, and MAPK signaling pathways. The results of molecular docking indicated that quercetin, nootkatone, baicalein, (-)-epicatechin and nootkatol all had good binding to the core intersection targets. Overall, our experimental researches have demonstrated that AOF could exert the dual effects of anti-diabetic and anti-depression on DM with depression mice, through multi-targets and multi-pathways.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have shown a strong bidirectional association between diabetes and depression, with diabetes increasing the risk of developing depression and vice versa. Depression among patients with diabetes is associated with poor glycemic control, complications, and poor self-care. AIM To explore the present state of research globally concerning diabetes and depression, to aid understanding the current research landscape and identify potential future areas of research. METHODS A bibliometric approach was used, utilizing the Scopus database to gather pertinent research articles released from 2004 to 2023. Analyses encompassed publication patterns, significant contributors, research focal points, prevalent themes, and the most influential articles, aimed at discerning emerging research subjects. RESULTS A total of 3229 publications that met the search criteria were identified. A significant increase in the number of publications related to diabetes and depression has been observed in the past two decades. The most productive nation was the USA (n = 1015; 31.43%), followed by China (n = 325; 10.07%), the UK (n = 236; 7.31%), and Germany (n = 218; 6.75%). Three principal themes in research on depression and diabetes were delineated by the analysis. First, the exploration of the elevated prevalence and etiology of this comorbidity; second, the focus on interventions, particularly randomized controlled trials, aimed at enhancing diabetes management among individuals with depression; and finally, the investigation of the involved risk factors and biological mechanisms underlying this bidirectional relationship. CONCLUSION There has been a recent surge of interest in the relationship between diabetes and depression. This could aid researchers to identify areas lacking in the literature and shape future research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is steadily increasing among elderly people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). This study aimed to create and validate a predictive model based on a nomogram. METHODS This cross-sectional study collected sociodemographic characteristics, T2DM-related factors, depression, and levels of social support from 530 older adults with T2DM. We used LASSO regression and multifactorial logistic regression to determine the predictors of the model. The performance of the nomogram was evaluated using calibration curves, receiver operating characteristics (ROC), and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS The nomogram comprised age, smoking, physical activity, social support, depression, living alone, and glycosylated hemoglobin. The AUC for the training and validation sets were 0.914 and 0.859. The DCA showed good clinical applicability. CONCLUSIONS This predictive nomogram has satisfactory accuracy and discrimination. Therefore, the nomogram can be intuitively and easily used to detect MCI in elderly adults with T2DM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older people are the fastest-growing age group, with the highest risk of cognitive impairment. This study assessed the prevalence and associated factors with cognitive impairment in community-dwelling older people. METHODS Older people were interviewed and accomplished through sociodemographic and health questionnaires. The quantitative variables were described by mean and standard deviation or median and interquartile range. The significance level adopted was 5 % (p < 0.05). The association between the quantitative variables was evaluated using the Pearson or Spearman correlation coefficients. RESULTS The research population comprised 165 long-lived adults aged ≥80. The youngest one was 80, and the oldest one was 94 years old. The participants were 84.8 ± 3.6 years old, female (63 %) with a mean of education of 2.9 ± 1.8 years. A poor performance in the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) was found in 58 (35.2 %) individuals when adjusted for educational level. After adjustment for confounding factors, body mass index (BMI) (p = 0.09), total older adults' income (up to 1 minimum wage [mw], p = 0.023; over 1 to 2 mw, p = 0.023), functional disability (Moderate dependence 75 %, p = 0.038; Moderate dependence 50 %, p = 0.081; Moderate dependence 25 %, p = 0.054), and the anxiety scale (p = 0.032), remained associated with cognitive impairment. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that BMI, total older adults' income, functional disability, and anxiety are related to cognitive impairment in long-lived adults. This study has some limitations, such as the fact that it is a cross-sectional study, the reduced number of individuals, and the fact that there were no comparisons among different ages and populations.

Abstract
Depression and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are substantial public health concerns. In the past decades, a link between the 2 disease entities has received extensive acknowledgment, yet the complex nature of this relationship demands further clarification. Some evidence indicates that midlife depression may be an AD risk factor, while a chronic course of depression in late life may be a precursor to or symptom of dementia. Recently, multiple pathophysiological mechanisms have been proposed to underlie the bidirectional relationship between depression and AD, including genetic predisposition, immune dysregulation, accumulation of AD-related biomarkers (e.g., amyloid-β and tau), and alterations in brain structure. Accordingly, numerous therapeutic approaches, such as pharmacology treatments, psychotherapy, and lifestyle interventions, have been suggested as potential means of interfering with these pathways. However, the current literature on this topic remains fragmented and lacks a comprehensive review characterizing the association between depression and AD. In this review, we aim to address these gaps by providing an overview of the co-occurrence and temporal relationship between depression and AD, as well as exploring their underlying mechanisms. We also examine the current therapeutic regimens for depression and their implications for AD management and outline key challenges facing the field.

Abstract
Individuals with mood disorders are predisposed to metabolic dysfunction, while those with metabolic dysregulation such as diabetes and obesity experience more severe depressive symptoms. Both metabolic dysfunction and mood disorders are independently associated with cognitive deficits. Therefore, given their close association, this study aimed to explore the association between metabolic dysfunction in individuals with mood disorders in relation to cognitive outcomes. A comprehensive search comprised of these three domains was carried out; a random-effects meta-analysis pooling mean cognitive outcomes was conducted (PROSPERO ID: CRD42022295765). Sixty-three studies were included in this review; 26 were synthesized in a quantitative meta-analysis. Comorbid metabolic dysregulation was associated with significantly lower global cognition among individuals with mood disorders. These trends were significant within each mood disorder subgroup, including major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, and self-report depression/depressive symptoms. Type 2 diabetes was associated with the lowest cognitive performance in individuals with mood disorders, followed by peripheral insulin resistance, body mass index ⩾25 kg/m2, and metabolic syndrome. Significant reduction in scores was also observed among individual cognitive domains (in descending order) of working memory, attention, executive function, processing speed, verbal memory, and visual memory. These findings demonstrate the detrimental effects of comorbid metabolic dysfunction in individuals with mood disorders. Further research is required to understand the underlying mechanisms connecting mood disorders, metabolism, and cognition.

Abstract
Objective: Adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) face an increased risk for cognitive decline and dementia. Diabetes-related and vascular risk factors have been linked to cognitive decline using detailed neuropsychological testing; however, it is unclear if cognitive screening batteries can detect cognitive changes associated with aging in T1D. Method: 1,049 participants with T1D (median age 59 years; range 43-74) from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT), and the follow-up Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC) study, completed the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery (NIHTB-C) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Neuropsychological assessments, depression, glycated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c), severe hypoglycemia, T1D complications, and vascular risk factors were assessed repeatedly over 32 years to determine associations with current NIHTB-C performance. Available cognitive data was clinically adjudicated to determine cognitive impairment status. Results: NIHTB-C scores had moderate associations (r = 0.36-0.53) with concurrently administered neuropsychological tests. In multivariate models, prior severe hypoglycemic episodes, depression symptoms, nephropathy, lower BMI, and higher HbA1c and LDL cholesterol were associated with poorer NIHTB-C Fluid Cognition Composite scores. The NIHTB-C adequately detected adjudicated cognitive impairment (Area Under the Curve = 0.86; optimal cut score ≤90). The MoCA performed similarly (Area Under the Curve = 0.83; optimal cut score ≤25). Conclusions: The NIHTB-C is sensitive to the cognitive effects of diabetes-related and vascular risk factors, correlated with neuropsychological testing, and accurately detects adjudicated cognitive impairment. These data support its use as a screening test in middle to older aged adults with T1D to determine if referral for detailed neuropsychological assessment is needed.

Abstract
Background: Lipids influence brain function and mental health. Understanding the role of apolipoproteins in affective disorders could provide valuable insights and potentially pave the way for novel therapeutic approaches. Methods: We examined the apolipoprotein E genotype and ApoE-levels, lipid profiles, and the correlation with cognition in 204 monozygotic (MZ) twins with unipolar or bipolar disorder in remission or partial remission (affected, AT), their unaffected co-twins (high-risk, HR), and twins with no personal or family history of affective disorder (low-risk, LR). Results: The APOE genotype was not associated with affective disorders. No significant group differences in ApoE levels were found between the three risk groups. Post hoc analysis group-wise comparisons showed higher ApoE levels in the AT than HR twins and in the concordant AT twin pairs relative to the discordant twin pairs. Within the discordant twin pairs, higher ApoE levels were observed in the affected twins (AT = 39.4 mg/L vs. HR = 36.8 mg/L, p = 0.037). Limitations: The present study could benefit from a larger sample size. We did not assess dietary habits. Conclusions: The results did not support our main hypothesis. However, exploratory post hoc analysis suggests a role for plasma ApoE and triglycerides in affective disorders. Future research is needed.

Abstract
The aim to examine the link between diabetes distress and depression in individuals with diabetes, assess the mediating role of psychological resilience in this relationship, and analyses if these relationships differ between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The study utilized a cross-sectional design. A total of 181 (age 33-72 years, mean = 54.76 years, and SD = 9.05 years) individuals diagnosed with diabetes who were receiving treatment from State Specialist Hospitals in Okitipupa were selected for the study using the convenient sampling technique. The data were analysed using Pearson Multiple correlation and multi-group mediation analysis. The analyses were carried out with Smartpls and IBM/SPSS Version 28.0. The results revealed a significant positive correlation between diabetes distress and depression (r = .80, p < .05), suggesting that higher levels of diabetes distress were associated with increased depression scores. Additionally, psychological resilience partially mediated the relationship between diabetes distress and depression (b = - 0.10, p < .05), signifying that resilience played a crucial role in mitigating the impact of diabetes distress on depression. Furthermore, a multi-group analysis was conducted to explore potential differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes subgroups. The relationship between diabetes distress and depression was found to be more pronounced in the Type 1 subgroup (difference = 0.345, p < .05), while the relationship between psychological resilience and depression was negatively stronger in the Type 2 subgroup (difference = - 0.404, p < .05) compared to the Type 1 subgroup. There is an intricate linkage between diabetes distress, resilience, and depression, emphasizing the differential roles of resilience in Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. The insights gleaned from this study underscore the importance of considering the type of diabetes when designing interventions and support mechanisms for individuals with diabetes who are also suffering from depression. By advancing our understanding of these dynamics, we can strive for more effective and personalized approaches to improve the overall well-being of those living with diabetes.

Abstract
(1) Background: Cognitive decline (CD), considered a precursory state of dementia, is frequently encountered in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM-2) and might even have a higher prevalence in those with associated atrial fibrillation (AF). In this study, we aimed to research if the association of DM-2 and AF favors a precocious onset of CD. (2) Methods: This study was conducted on 160 patients, featuring 50 with DM-2, 54 with DM-2 and AF, and 56 subjects without DM-2 and AF, all evaluated clinically and with five neuropsychiatric scales. (3) Results: The Mini-Mental-State-Examination (MMSE), Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Activities of Daily Living Score (ADL), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living Score (IADL), and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) were significantly altered in patients with DM-2 and AF in comparison to patients without these diseases. The logistic regression model indicated that, in patients with DM-2 and AF, an increase of one year in age is associated with a 7.3% augmentation of the risk of a precocious onset of CD (MMSE < 27). (4) Conclusions: CD is more frequent in patients with DM-2, especially when associated with AF, versus those without DM-2 and AF. Our findings suggest that an older age and associated dyslipidemia represent risk factors for CD in patients with DM-2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes-induced cognitive impairment is a major challenge in patients with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus. It has a complicated pathophysiology, but the role of oxidative stress is central. Therefore, the use of antidiabetic drugs with extra-glycemic effects that reduce oxidative damage may be a promising treatment option. METHODS Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups as normal, normal treated, diabetic and diabetic treated (n = 8 per group). Type 1 diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal dose of streptozotocin (STZ) (40 mg/kg). Two treatment groups received empagliflozin for 5 weeks (20 mg/kg/po). Cognitive ability was evaluated using open field, Elevated Plus Maze (EPM) and the Morris Water Maze (MWM) tests at study completion. Blood and brain tissue samples were collected - and analysis for malondialdehyde (MDA) and glutathione (GLT) content and catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activity were performed. Additionally, expression of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase-4 (Nox-4) enzyme in brain tissue was analyzed using RT-PCR. RESULTS STZ increased blood glucose and induced diabetes with oxidative stress by lowering the antioxidant system potency and increasing Nox-4 expression after 5-weeks in brain tissue accompanied by reduction in cognitive performance. Also, diabetes induced anxiety-like behavior and impaired spatial memory in MWM, EPM and open field tests. However, empagliflozin reversed these changes, improving SOD and CAT activity, GLT content and reducing Nox-4 expression and MDA concentration in brain tissue while improving cognitive ability. It reduced anxiety and depression-related activities. It also improved spatial memory in MWM test. CONCLUSION Uncontrolled diabetes negatively impacts mental function and impairs learning and cognitive performance via oxidative stress induction, the Nox-4 enzyme playing a central role. Empagliflozin reverses these effects, improving cognitive ability via promoting the anti-oxidative system and damping Nox-4 free radical generator enzyme expression. Therefore, empagliflozin is a promising treatment, providing both antidiabetic and extra-glycemic benefits for improving brain function in the diabetic milieu.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a prevalent metabolic disease that poses significant health risks due to its numerous complications. However, the effects of eumelanin on oxidative stress, hyperglycemia and depression in diabetic mice have not been extensively studied. RESULTS Our study employed an enzymatic approach to extract eumelanin from squid ink and characterized it using spectroscopic techniques. Remarkably, eumelanin extracted with alkaline-neutral-flavor protease (ANF) displayed superior inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase and α-amylase, while enhancing glucose utilization and hepatic glycogen synthesis in human hepatocellular carcinoma cell line (HepG2) insulin resistance model. Further evaluation of ANF in a T2DM ICR mouse model demonstrated its significant potential in alleviating hyperglycemia, reducing glycosylated serum protein levels, improving glucose tolerance and modulating total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels, as well as antioxidant indices at a dosage of 0.04 g kg-1 . Additionally, ANF exhibited positive effects on energy levels and reduced immobility time in antidepressant behavioral experiments. Moreover, ANF positively influenced the density and infiltration state of renal cells, while mitigating inflammatory enlargement and deformation of liver cells, without inducing any adverse effects in mice. CONCLUSION Overall, these findings underscore the significant therapeutic potential of ANF in the treatment of T2DM and its associated complications. By augmenting lipid and glucose metabolism, mitigating oxidative stress and alleviating depression, ANF emerges as a promising candidate for multifaceted intervention. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Cognitive dysfunction, dementia and depression are typical comorbidities of diabetes and are more common in older people with diabetes than in the general population. Both comorbid diseases have a substantial impact on the therapy of diabetes and lead to a reduction of the functional level in everyday life, the quality of life and are associated with increased mortality. This article summarizes the most important results on the etiology of cognitive dysfunction and depression and their consequences for clinical practice.

Abstract
Psychological aspects of rehabilitation nutrition affect physical, cognitive, and social rehabilitation nutrition. When depression is recognized, not only pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy, but also non-pharmacological therapies such as exercise, nutrition, psychosocial, and other interventions can be expected to improve depression. Therefore, accurate diagnosis and intervention without overlooking depression is important. Psychological aspects of preventive rehabilitation nutrition is also important because depression can be partially prevented by appropriate exercise and nutritional management. Even in the absence of psychological negatives, increasing more psychological positives from a positive psychology perspective can be useful for both patients and healthcare professionals. Positive rehabilitation nutrition interventions can increase more psychological positives, such as well-being, through cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness on their own, as well as through interventions on environmental factors. Consequently, physical, cognitive, and social positives are also expected to be enhanced.

Abstract
Background Diabetes is one of the main risk factors for developing mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease. Most studies have demonstrated a worse performance in executive function, verbal fluency, and information processing speed in patients with diabetes. Objective To assess the cognitive functioning of persons with type 2 diabetes and amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI-T2DM) compared to persons with aMCI without diabetes and persons without diabetes or aMCI as controls, to understand the role of diabetes in the neuropsychological profile. Methods Cross-sectional study involving a sample of 83 patients, ranging in age from 61 to 85 years and divided into three groups: aMCI-T2DM (27 patients), aMCI (29 patients), Controls (27 individuals). All the participants undertook an exhaustive neuropsychological assessment (auditory-verbal and visual memory, attention, information processing speed, language, executive function, and depression). Results Both groups of aMCI patients performed significantly worse than the controls in all the neuropsychological tests. A significant linear tendency (p trend < 0.05) was found between groups, with the aMCI-T2DM group presenting worse results in global cognition assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination and Montreal Cognitive Assessment; Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test; Auditory Verbal Learning Test; Trail Making Test A and B, Verbal Fluency Test, and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. Conclusions aMCI patients with or without diabetes showed worse cognitive function compared to persons without diabetes or aMCI. Additionally, aMCI patients without T2DM presented a different cognitive profile than aMCI patients with T2DM, which tended towards presenting worse cognitive functions such as global cognition, memory, attention, executive function, and language.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mineral intake may protect against cognitive impairment (CI) and all-cause dementia, which affects a large number of adults worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between mineral intake and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), which is a sensitive and specific test. METHODS In total, 201 adults were included in a cross-sectional study. They completed a three-day dietary record to estimate their average daily intake of minerals. Contributions to dietary reference intakes (DRIs) were also calculated. The participants were divided into tertiles according to their mineral intake. CI classifications were determined via the MoCA (score < 26). Apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotyping was carried out, and the patients' anthropometric measurements and physical activity, health and personal data were collected. RESULTS The prevalence of CI in this selective sample was 54.2% (34.3% females and 19.9% males). In women, being in the third tertiles of iron and manganese intake was associated with lower odds of having CI (OR [95% CI]: 0.32 [0.11 ± 0.93]; 0.33 [0.12 ± 0.93], p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed for any of the nutrients studied in men. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that a low mineral intake, especially low iron and manganese intake in women, is associated with a worse cognition as assessed by MoCA.

Abstract
AIMS To examine the risk association of insomnia with incident chronic cognitive impairment in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D). METHODS Between July 2010 and June 2015, patients with T2D aged ≥60 years enrolled in the Hong Kong Diabetes Register completed the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) questionnaire. Patients were considered having insomnia if they had ISI score > 14. We prospectively followed up the cohort and censored outcome through reviewing diagnoses and clinical notes entered by attending physicians in electronic medical record to identify incident cases of mild cognitive impairment and dementia. RESULTS After excluding shift workers and those with established chronic cognitive impairment at baseline, we included 986 patients with T2D in this study (58.3 % men, mean age ± standard deviation: 62.5 ± 2.6 years, disease duration of diabetes: 10.7 ± 8.2 years, HbA1c: 7.4 ± 1.3 %, insulin users: 28.7 %, insomnia: 9.1 %). After a median follow-up of 7.6 (interquartile range = 2.0) years, 41 (4.2 %) developed chronic cognitive impairment. Using Cox regression analysis, insomnia (hazard ratio, HR 2.909, p = 0.012) and HbA1c ≥ 7 % (HR 2.300, p = 0.038) were positively associated with incident chronic cognitive impairment while insulin use (HR 0.309, p = 0.028) showed negative association. CONCLUSIONS Insomnia, suboptimal glycemic control and non-insulin use are independent risk factors for incident chronic cognitive impairment in older adults with T2D.

Abstract
Background In recent years, the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has dramatically increased, imposing a heavy financial burden on society and individuals. The most cost-effective way to control diabetes is diabetes self-management, which depends on patients' executive functions (EFs). However, the level of EFs among patients with T2DM varies greatly. In addition to diabetes-related factors contributing to a decline in EFs, trait impulsivity as a relatively stable personality trait may explicate individual differences in EFs. The objective of this study was to verify the mediating effect of negative emotions on the relationship between trait impulsivity and EFs among patients with T2DM in China. Methods A total of 305 patients with T2DM were enrolled consecutively from the endocrinology departments of three tertiary hospitals in China using convenience sampling. The participants completed the Sociodemographic Questionnaire, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Barratt Impulsiveness Scale-Brief (BIS-Brief), Depression Anxiety and Stress Scales with 21 items (DASS-21), and Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult (BRIEF-A) version. A structural equation modeling was used to verify the mediating effect of negative emotions on the relationship between trait impulsivity and EFs. Results A total of 32.46% of the participants experienced at least one aspect of daily EF decline. The mediating effect of trait impulsivity on the Behavioral Regulation Index (BRI) of EFs through negative emotions was significant, accounting for 29.57% of the total effect. The mediating effect of trait impulsivity on the Metacognitive Index (MI) of EFs through negative emotions was significant, accounting for 31.67% of the total effect. Conclusions Trait impulsivity can positively predict EF decline, which can be alleviated by improving the negative emotions of patients with T2DM. Future research exploring interventions to improve the EFs of patients with T2DM should therefore consider their trait impulsivity and negative emotions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Age-related hearing loss (ARHL) is the third leading cause of years lived with disability. Connections among ARHL, depressive symptoms, social engagement and cognitive status are increasingly reported but the underlying mechanisms leading to these relationships are largely unknown. Exploring these mechanisms is a worthy goal, especially in older adults. This study aimed to examine the mediating effect of social engagement and depressive symptoms on the relationship between ARHL and cognitive status. METHODS Structural equation modeling (SEM) with path analysis were performed with data from a cross-sectional study conducted in 11 community centers in 2021, which assessed older adults' intrinsic and sensory capacities using the WHO ICOPE framework. Demographic information, health profile, a binary measure of hearing capacity, depressive symptoms, social engagement, and cognitive status of participants were gathered. RESULTS A total of 304 participants were included. ARHL was positively associated with depressive symptoms (β = 0.18, p = 0.009) and negatively related to social engagement (β = -0.13, p = 0.026). Social engagement was positively associated with cognitive status (β = 0.17, p = 0.005) and negatively associated with depressive symptoms (β = -0.23, p < 0.001). Greater depressive symptoms were negatively associated with the participants' cognition (β = -0.13, p = 0.009). Both social engagement (β = -0.02, p = 0.029) and depressive symptoms (β = -0.02, p = 0.032) mediated the negative associations between ARHL and cognitive status. CONCLUSIONS Addressing hearing loss, depressive symptoms, and enhancing social engagement should be investigated as a potential means of minimizing cognitive decline. Well-designed studies are needed to comprehensively inform the clinical practice development, particularly large prospective studies that will facilitate further elucidate possible causal mechanisms behind these observed associations.

Abstract
Somatic disturbances that occur in parallel with psychiatric diseases are a major challenge in clinical practice. Various factors contribute to the development of mental and somatic disorders. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a significant health burden worldwide, and the prevalence of diabetes in adults is increasing. The comorbidity of diabetes and mental disorders is very common. By sharing a bidirectional link, both T2DM and mental disorders influence each other in various manners, but the exact mechanisms underlying this link are not yet elucidated. The potential mechanisms of both mental disorders and T2DM are related to immune and inflammatory system dysfunction, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction, and metabolic disturbances. Moreover, diabetes is also a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction that can range from subtle diabetes-associated cognitive decline to pre-dementia and dementia. A complex re-lationship between the gut and the brain also represents a new therapeutic approach since gut-brain signalling pathways regulate food intake and hepatic glucose production. The aim of this minireview is to summarize and present the latest data on mutual pathogenic pathways in these disorders, emphasizing their complexity and interweaving. We also focused on the cognitive performances and changes in neurodegenerative disorders. The importance of implementing integrated approaches in treating both of these states is highlighted, along with the need for individual therapeutic strategies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is highly prevalent worldwide and may lead to a higher rate of cognitive dysfunction. This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram-based model to detect mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in T2DM patients. METHODS Inpatients with T2DM in the endocrinology department of Xiangya Hospital were consecutively enrolled between March and December 2021. Well-qualified investigators conducted face-to-face interviews with participants to retrospectively collect sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, T2DM-related information, and history of depression and anxiety. Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination scale. A nomogram was developed to detect MCI based on the results of the multivariable logistic regression analysis. Calibration, discrimination, and clinical utility of the nomogram were subsequently evaluated by calibration plot, receiver operating characteristic curve, and decision curve analysis, respectively. RESULTS A total of 496 patients were included in this study. The prevalence of MCI in T2DM patients was 34.1% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 29.9%-38.3%). Age, marital status, household income, diabetes duration, diabetic retinopathy, anxiety, and depression were independently associated with MCI. Nomogram based on these factors had an area under the curve of 0.849 (95% CI: 0.815-0.883), and the threshold probability ranged from 35.0% to 85.0%. CONCLUSIONS Almost one in three T2DM patients suffered from MCI. The nomogram, based on age, marital status, household income, duration of diabetes, diabetic retinopathy, anxiety, and depression, achieved an optimal diagnosis of MCI. Therefore, it could provide a clinical basis for detecting MCI in T2DM patients.

Abstract
Background Hypertension, sleep disorders, and depression are highly prevalent in the elderly population and are all associated with cognitive impairment, but the role that sleep quality and depression play in the association between hypertension and cognitive impairment is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether sleep quality and depression have a mediating role in the association between hypertension and cognitive impairment. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted to collect data from the Tongji Hospital Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment Database. Sleep quality, depression and cognitive function were measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) and the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), respectively. Correlation analysis, regression analysis and Bootstrap analysis were used to examine correlations between key variables and mediating effects of sleep quality and depression. Adjustments for multiple comparisons were performed using Benjamini-Hochberg adjustment for multiple testing. Results A total of 827 participants were included, hypertension was present in 68.3% of the sample. After correcting for covariates, hypertensive patients aged 65 years or older had worse cognitive function, poorer-sleep quality and higher levels of depression. Sleep quality was significantly negatively associated with depression and cognitive function, while depression was negatively associated with cognitive function. Mediation analysis revealed that hypertension can affect cognitive function in older adults through a single mediating effect of sleep quality and depression and a chain mediating effect of sleep quality and depression. Conclusion This study found that sleep quality and depression can mediate the relationship between hypertension and cognitive function in elderly. Enhanced supervision of sleep quality and depression in elderly patients with hypertension may be beneficial in maintaining cognitive function.

Abstract
The potential role of psychological distress as the pathway linking diabetes and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is still unclear. This study aims to investigate whether depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between diabetes and SCD in older adults. Baseline data from 3428 adults (55-94 years) of the South East Asia Community Observatory (SEACO), Malaysia were utilized. Subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) were recorded at baseline and five years later. Mediation analyses with non-parametric bootstrapping methods were employed. A proportion of 20% of participants without SCC at baseline reported a decline in SCC after 5 years of follow-up. Known diabetes (β = -0.13, SE = 0.05, p = 0.02) and depressive symptoms (ß = -0.18, SE = 0.05, p = 0.001) were independently associated with SCD. Previously diagnosed diabetes was associated with depressive symptoms at baseline (ß = 0.04, SE = 0.02, p = 0.01), and greater SCD at follow-up (β = -0.19, SE = 0.06, p = 0.001). Mediation analyses revealed that 9% of the association between diabetes and SCD was attributable to an indirect effect through depressive symptoms (ß = -0.01, 95% CI 0.02-0.001, p < 0.0001). This study provides further evidence of the detrimental effects of diabetes and depression on subjective cognitive decline. Our findings also suggest that depression is an important pathway linking previously diagnosed diabetes with subjective cognitive decline in older adulthood.

Abstract
Empirical evidence indicates a significant bidirectional association between mental disorders and physical diseases, but the prospective impact of men-tal disorders on clinical outcomes of physical diseases has not been comprehensively outlined. In this PRISMA- and COSMOS-E-compliant umbrella review, we searched PubMed, PsycINFO, Embase, and Joanna Briggs Institute Database of Systematic Reviews and Implementation Reports, up to March 15, 2022, to identify systematic reviews with meta-analysis that examined the prospective association between any mental disorder and clinical outcomes of physical diseases. Primary outcomes were disease-specific mortality and all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes were disease-specific incidence, functioning and/or disability, symptom severity, quality of life, recurrence or progression, major cardiac events, and treatment-related outcomes. Additional inclusion criteria were further applied to primary studies. Random effect models were employed, along with I2 statistic, 95% prediction intervals, small-study effects test, excess significance bias test, and risk of bias (ROBIS) assessment. Associations were classified into five credibility classes of evidence (I to IV and non-significant) according to established criteria, complemented by sensitivity and subgroup analyses to examine the robustness of the main analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using a new package for conducting umbrella reviews (https://metaumbrella.org). Population attributable fraction (PAF) and generalized impact fraction (GIF) were then calculated for class I-III associations. Forty-seven systematic reviews with meta-analysis, encompassing 251 non-overlapping primary studies and reporting 74 associations, were included (68% were at low risk of bias at the ROBIS assessment). Altogether, 43 primary outcomes (disease-specific mortality: n=17; all-cause mortality: n=26) and 31 secondary outcomes were investigated. Although 72% of associations were statistically significant (p<0.05), only two showed convincing (class I) evidence: that between depressive disorders and all-cause mortality in patients with heart failure (hazard ratio, HR=1.44, 95% CI: 1.26-1.65), and that between schizophrenia and cardiovascular mortality in patients with cardiovascular diseases (risk ratio, RR=1.54, 95% CI: 1.36-1.75). Six associations showed highly suggestive (class II) evidence: those between depressive disorders and all-cause mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus (HR=2.84, 95% CI: 2.00-4.03) and with kidney failure (HR=1.41, 95% CI: 1.31-1.51); that between depressive disorders and major cardiac events in patients with myocardial infarction (odds ratio, OR=1.52, 95% CI: 1.36-1.70); that between depressive disorders and dementia in patients with diabetes mellitus (HR=2.11, 95% CI: 1.77-2.52); that between alcohol use disorder and decompensated liver cirrhosis in patients with hepatitis C (RR=3.15, 95% CI: 2.87-3.46); and that between schizophrenia and cancer mortality in patients with cancer (standardized mean ratio, SMR=1.74, 95% CI: 1.41-2.15). Sensitivity/subgroup analyses confirmed these results. The largest PAFs were 30.56% (95% CI: 27.67-33.49) for alcohol use disorder and decompensated liver cirrhosis in patients with hepatitis C, 26.81% (95% CI: 16.61-37.67) for depressive disorders and all-cause mortality in patients with diabetes mellitus, 13.68% (95% CI: 9.87-17.58) for depressive disorders and major cardiac events in patients with myocardial infarction, 11.99% (95% CI: 8.29-15.84) for schizophrenia and cardiovascular mortality in patients with cardiovascular diseases, and 11.59% (95% CI: 9.09-14.14) for depressive disorders and all-cause mortality in patients with kidney failure. The GIFs confirmed the preventive capacity of these associations. This umbrella review demonstrates that mental disorders increase the risk of a poor clinical outcome in several physical diseases. Prevention targeting mental disorders - particularly alcohol use disorders, depressive disorders, and schizophrenia - can reduce the incidence of adverse clinical outcomes in people with physical diseases. These findings can inform clinical practice and trans-speciality preventive approaches cutting across psychiatric and somatic medicine.

Abstract
Objective Although physical exercise has been shown to boost physical, psychological, and psychiatric conditions in older adults, there is a relative lack of research on the mechanisms involved in this process for older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We thus evaluated whether sleep quality and depression mediated the relationship between physical exercise and cognitive impairment in older adults with T2DM by focusing on the exercise-physiology-psychology and psychiatry connection. Methods Self-reported data were collected from 2646 older adults with T2DM in Weifang, Shandong, China. Regression and bootstrap analyses were conducted to explore the chain mediator model including physical exercise, cognitive impairment, sleep quality, and depression. Results Engaging in physical exercise (coefficient = -0.6858, p < 0.001), high levels of sleep quality (coefficient = -0.3397, p = 0.015), and low levels of depression (coefficient = 0.3866, p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a low level of cognitive impairment. Sleep quality and depression mediated the chain effect between physical exercise and cognitive impairment (total effect = -1.0732, 95% CI [-1.3652, -0.7862]; direct effect = -0.6858, 95% CI [-0.9702, -0.3974]; indirect effect = -0.3875, 95% CI [-0.5369, -0.2521]). Conclusion Physical exercise may improve sleep quality in older adults with T2DM, alleviating depression and delaying the development of cognitive impairment. Physical exercise can enhance patients' ability to resist depression and cognitive impairment, and creating comfortable sleep environments can also reinforce the effects of this process. These findings have important implications for promoting healthy aging in older adults with T2DM.

Abstract
Background Diabetes cognitive impairment (DCI) is a common diabetic central nervous system disorder that severely affects the quality of life of patients. Qishiwei Zhenzhu Pills (Ranasampel) is a valuable Tibetan medicine formula with the ability to improve cerebral blood vessels, protect nerves and improve learning and memory, which has also been widely verified in clinical and basic research. Currently, the prevention and treatment of DCI are still in the exploratory research stage, and the use of Ranasampel will provide new ideas and insights for its treatment. Objective This study is to explore the absorbed components in serum derived from Ranasampel using serum pharmacochemistry, then identify the potential mechanism of Ranasampel for the treatment of DCI through bioinformatics and microarray data validation. Methods The UPLC-Q-Exactive MS/MS-based serum pharmacochemistry method was conducted to identify the main active components in serum containing Ranasampel. Then, these components were used to predict the possible biological targets of Ranasampel and explore the potential targets in treating DCI by overlapping with differentially expressed genes (DEGs) screened from Gene Expression Omnibus datasets. Afterward, the protein-protein interaction network, enrichment analyses, hub gene identification, and co-expression analysis were used to study the potential mechanism of Ranasampel. Particularly, the hub genes and co-expression transcription factors were further validated using hippocampal expression profiles of db/db mice treated with Ranasampel, while the Morris water-maze test and H&E staining were used to assess the spatial learning and memory behaviors and histopathological changes. Results Totally, 40 compounds derived from Ranasampel had been identified by serum sample analysis, and 477 genes related to these identified compounds in Ranasampel, 110 overlapping genes were collected by the intersection of Ranasampel target genes and DEGs. Further comprehensive analysis and verification emphasized that the mechanism of Ranasampel treatment of DCI may be related to the improvement of learning and memory function as well as insulin resistance, hyperglycemia-induced neuronal damage, and neuroinflammation. Conclusion This study provided useful strategies to explore the potential material basis for compound prescriptions such as Ranasampel. These hub genes and common pathways also provided new ideas for further study of therapeutic targets of DCI and the pharmacological mechanism of Ranasampel.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to describe the direction of the link between stress, depression, increased inflammation and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) reduction. We hypothesize that severe stress or prolonged stress can be the driving factor that promote the onset of depression. Both stress and depression, if not resolved over time, activate the production of transcription factors that will switch on pro-inflammatory genes and translate them into cytokines. This cascade fosters systemic chronic inflammation and reduced plasma BDNF levels. Since people with depression have a 60% increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and show high levels of inflammation and low levels of BDNF, we hypothesize possible reasons that might explain why T2D, depression and dementia are often associated in the same patient.

Abstract
Comorbid diabetes and depression are a significant public health burden as the consequences of both diseases are worsened by each other. In this study, we have compiled and analyzed findings from various studies to demonstrate that diabetes has a strong association with depression. Both have a significant impact on the quality of life, although the exact mechanisms through which these two chronic diseases affect each other remain unknown. This article discussed the shared etiological factors of comorbidity between diabetes and depression, including physiological (e.g., deregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, sympathetic nervous system (SNS) overactivity, microvascular dysfunction, arterial stiffening, inflammation, and cytokines), behavioral (e.g., diet and lifestyle modifications), and environmental (e.g., childhood adversity, poverty, and neighborhood environment). Included data from a range of settings have suggested that the prognosis of both diabetes and depression, in terms of complications, treatment efficacy, morbidity, and mortality, is worse for either disease when they occur concurrently than individually. The implication for the physical, mental, and social well-being of depression in diabetes causes poor self-care and adherence to medical treatment. This article also highlights the importance of regular screening and prompts the treatment of comorbid diabetes and depression with pharmacotherapy, face-to-face psychotherapy, and non-face-to-face models of alternative psychological interventions, including information and communication technologies (ICTs), computer-based diabetes self-management interventions, and digital mental health intervention, to improve the outcomes of both diseases.

Abstract
The rising prevalence of depression among Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) patients has triggered an alarming situation, and further actions need to be taken by health care professionals and policymakers to curb the issue. There is a lack of evidence review in terms of the biopsychosocial and nutritional factors that are related to depression among T2DM. Hence, this review aimed to identify available evidence on the biopsychosocial and nutritional factors associated with depression among T2DM patients based on the existing literature. Articles were systematically searched from four databases, namely PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and EBSCOHost. The approach for the identification of the final articles followed PRISMA guidelines. The selected full-text articles were published between 2017 and 2021 in the English language, and included studies focused on depression among T2DM patients. Using AXIS tools, the eligible articles were evaluated to assess the quality of studies. A total of 19 studies were included in the review, and information related to research questions and associated factors was extracted. Biological, psychological, social, and nutritional factors were shown to be linked with depression among T2DM patients. Future studies need to considered using the biopsychosocial model and incorporating nutritional factors to manage the issues of depression among T2DM patients.
