Abstract
BACKGROUND Variants in fat mass and the obesity-associated protein (FTO) gene have long been recognized as the most significant genetic predictors of body fat mass and obesity. Nevertheless, despite the overall evidence, there are conflicting reports regarding the correlation between different polymorphisms of the FTO gene and body mass index (BMI). Additionally, it is unclear whether FTO influences metabolic syndrome (MetS) through mechanisms other than BMI's impact. In this work, we aimed to analyze the impact of the following FTO polymorphisms on the BMI as well as MetS components in a population of young adult men. METHODS The patient group consisted of 279 Polish young adult men aged 28.92 (4.28) recruited for the MAGNETIC trial. The single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), located in the first intron of the FTO gene, were genotyped, and the results were used to identify "protective" and "risk" haplotypes and diplotypes based on the literature data. Laboratory, as well as anthropometric measurements regarding MetS, were performed. Measured MetS components included those used in the definition in accordance with the current guidelines. Data regarding dietary patterns were also collected, and principal components of the dietary patterns were identified. RESULTS No statistically significant correlations were identified between the analyzed FTO diplotypes and BMI (p = 0.53) or other MetS components (waist circumference p = 0.55; triglycerides p = 0.72; HDL cholesterol p = 0.33; blood glucose p = 0.20; systolic blood pressure p = 0.06; diastolic blood pressure p = 0.21). Stratification by the level of physical activity or adherence to the dietary patterns also did not result in any statistically significant result. CONCLUSIONS Some studies have shown that FTO SNPs such as rs1421085, rs1121980, rs8050136, rs9939609, and rs9930506 have an impact on the BMI or other MetS components; nevertheless, this was not replicated in this study of Polish young adult males.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is one of the most common health problems for people around the world. The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among adults without prior diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and chronic kidney disease. We also plan to assess the influence of certain lifestyle components on prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The study involved cardiovascularly healthy patients undergoing lab tests, measurements, and the HLPCQ questionnaire (The Healthy Lifestyle and Personal Control Questionnaire). The data were used to diagnose metabolic syndrome. Out of 1044 patients from 10 primary care facilities, 23.3% met the metabolic syndrome criteria, showing a strong link with increased blood pressure, cholesterol, and fasting glucose. Lower scores in the Organized physical exercise subscale of the HLPCQ questionnaire were noted in those with metabolic syndrome. Comparing the subscale of HLPCQ questionnaire, the lower results in Organized physical exercise subscale were found among the participants with metabolic syndrome, both male and females. Metabolic syndrome, a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease, should be screened for actively, even in apparently healthy populations. Results obtained in our study from analysis of HLPCQ show that screening for metabolic syndrome should be preceded by prevention based on regular physical activity and proper eating habits.

Abstract
AIMS Inflammation is central to the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS). Leukocyte cell-derived chemotaxin 2 (LECT2) is constitutively secreted in response to inflammatory stimuli and oxidative stress contributing to tissue or systemic inflammation. We explored the relationship between LECT2 levels and MetS severity in humans and mice. METHODS Serum LECT2 levels were measured in 210 participants with MetS and 114 without MetS (non-MetS). LECT2 expression in the liver and adipose tissue was also examined in mice fed a high-fat diet (HFD) and genetically obese (ob/ob) mice. RESULTS Serum LECT2 levels were significantly higher in MetS participants than in non-MetS participants (7.47[3.36-17.14] vs. 3.74[2.61-5.82], P < 0.001). Particularly, serum LECT2 levels were significantly elevated in participants with hypertension, central obesity, diabetes mellitus (DM), hyperglycaemia, elevated triglyceride (TG) levels, and reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels compared to those in participants without these conditions. Pearson's correlation analysis showed that serum LECT2 levels were positively associated with conventional risk factors in all patients. Moreover, LECT2 was positively associated with the number of MetS components (r = 0.355, P < 0.001), indicating that higher serum LECT2 levels reflected MetS severity. Multivariate regression analysis revealed that a one standard deviation increase in LECT2 was associated with an odds ratio of 1.52 (1.01-2.29, P = 0.044) for MetS prevalence after adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, waist circumference, smoking status, white blood cell count, fasting blood glucose, TG, total cholesterol, HDL-C, blood urea nitrogen, and alanine aminotransferase. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis confirmed the strong predictive ability of serum LECT2 levels for MetS. The optimum serum LECT2 cut-off value was 9.05. The area under the curve was 0.73 (95% confidence interval 0.68-0.78, P < 0.001), with a sensitivity and specificity of 45.71% and 95.61%, respectively. Additionally, LECT2 expression levels were higher at baseline and dramatically enhanced in metabolic organs (e.g. the liver) and adipose tissue in HFD-induced obese mice and ob/ob mice. CONCLUSIONS Increased LECT2 levels were significantly and independently associated with the presence and severity of MetS, indicating that LECT2 could be used as a novel biomarker and clinical predictor of MetS.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MS) is defined by the outcome of interconnected metabolic factors that directly increase the prevalence of obesity and other metabolic diseases. Currently, obesity is considered one of the most relevant topics of discussion because an epidemic heave of the incidence of obesity in both developing and underdeveloped countries has been reached. According to the World Obesity Atlas 2023 report, 38% of the world population are presently either obese or overweight. One of the causes of obesity is an imbalance of energy intake and energy expenditure, where nutritional imbalance due to consumption of high-calorie fast foods play a pivotal role. The dynamic interactions among different risk factors of obesity are highly complex; however, the underpinnings of hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia for obesity incidence are recognized. Fast foods, primarily composed of soluble carbohydrates, non-nutritive artificial sweeteners, saturated fats, and complexes of macronutrients (protein-carbohydrate, starch-lipid, starch-lipid-protein) provide high metabolic calories. Several experimental studies have pointed out that dairy proteins and peptides may modulate the activities of risk factors of obesity. To justify the results precisely, peptides from dairy milk proteins were synthesized under in vitro conditions and their contributions to biomarkers of obesity were assessed. Comprehensive information about the impact of proteins and peptides from dairy milks on fast food-induced obesity is presented in this narrative review article.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Evidence from recent studies suggested that the quality of dietary macronutrients can play a possible role in predicting the risk of metabolic disorders. In the current study, we aimed to assess the association of carbohydrate quality index (CQI) and protein score with the risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Iranian adults. METHODS This prospective study was conducted within the framework of the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study on 1738 individuals aged between 40 and 70 years old, who were followed up for a mean of 6.1 years. A food frequency questionnaire was used to determine CQI and protein scores. The multivariable adjusted Cox regression model was used to calculate the hazard ratio (HR) of MetS across quartiles of protein score and CQI, and its components. RESULTS The mean ± standard deviation (SD) age and body mass index of the study population (42.5% men) were 49.3 ± 7.5 years and 27.0 ± 4.0 kg/m2, respectively. Mean ± SD scores of CQI and protein for all participants were 12.6 ± 2.4 and 10.3 ± 3.5, respectively. During the study follow-up, 834(48.0%) new cases of MetS were ascertained. In the multivariable-adjusted model, the risk of MetS was decreased across quartiles of CQI (HR = 0.83;95%CI:0.69-1.00, Ptrend=0.025) and protein score (HR = 0.75; 95% CI:0.60-0.94, Ptrend=0.041). Also, Of CQI components, the whole grain/total grains ratio showed a significant inverse association with the risk of MetS (HR = 0.75;95%CI:0.60-0.94, Ptrend=0.012). CONCLUSION Our findings revealed that a dietary pattern with higher CQI and protein score may be related to a reduced risk of MetS in adults.

Abstract
The association between personal habits and metabolic syndrome (MetS) remains controversial. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of MetS among youths and its association with cigarette, tobacco, opium, and alcohol consumption in the Rafsanjan Youth Cohort Study (RYCS). The current cross-sectional study was based on data from RYCS, as part of the Rafsanjan Cohort Study (RCS). RCS is a branch of the prospective epidemiological research studies in Iran (PERSIAN). In the present study, 2843 youths aged 15-35 were included. MetS was diagnosed using the international diabetes federation (International IDF), National Cholesterol Education Panel- Adult Treatment Panel III (NCEP-ATPIII), and Iranian criteria (IDF Iranian). Binary logistic regression models were performed to estimate odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs). The prevalence of MetS was 7.67%, 7.14%, and 10.13% based on NCEP-ATPIII, IDF Iranian, and International IDF criteria respectively. The odds of MetS according to international IDF and Iranian IDF in the alcohol-drinking group in the last 12 months (OR: 1.51, 95%CI 1.02-2.21, OR: 1.66, 95%CI 1.11-2.48 respectively) were greater compared with the non-drinking group. The odds of having high TG in the alcohol-drinking group in the last 12 months was 1.53 times higher than the control group (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.20-1.94). Furthermore, the odds of having high waist circumference (WC) according to IDF International was significantly higher in the tobacco-smoking group in the last 12 months and in the tobacco-smoking group in the last 12 months daily (OR: 1.23, 95%CI 1.01-1.49 and OR: 1.41, 95%CI 1.01-1.98 respectively) compared to the control groups. The prevalence of MetS was 7.67%, 7.14%, and 10.13% based on NCEP-ATPIII, IDF Iranian, and International IDF criteria respectively. The odds of MetS and high TG were greater in the alcohol-drinking group in the last 12 months compared with the non-drinking group. The odds of high WC in the last 12 months, were greater in the tobacco-smoking group compared with the non-smoking group. However, more longitudinal studies are needed to verify the associations observed in the current study.

Abstract
Background Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating mood disorder that increases the risk of metabolic syndrome (MS), emphasizing the need for mental and physical health treatments. Although many studies have linked atypical antipsychotics to metabolic disturbances, there is limited evidence linking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor use to MS. This study aimed to assess the risk of MS among patients with MDD who were administered vortioxetine and fluoxetine. Methodology This was a prospective, open-label, randomized controlled trial conducted in the psychiatry department. Using computer-generated random numbers, the physician assigned fluoxetine 20 mg or vortioxetine 10 mg and recorded MS parameters at baseline and each visit (4, 8, 12, 16, 20, and 24 weeks). This study was registered with CTRI (CTRI/2021/07/034892). Results A total of 122 participants were allocated randomly to the following two groups: group A (n = 60) and group B (n = 62). An independent-sample t-test showed a significant improvement in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) at week eight (p = 0.005), triglycerides (TGs) at week 16 (p = 0.005), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) at week 20 (p = 0.005), and waist circumference at week 24 (p = 0.005) in group A compared to group B. However, systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) were not significantly associated with either group (p = 0.126 and p = 0.793, respectively). Overall depression remission (Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D)) and medication adherence rating scale scores were similar between groups (p = 0.337 and 0.325, respectively). Furthermore, most adverse drug reactions were possibly associated with the study drugs. Conclusions In comparison to group B, group A showed significant improvements in FPG, HDL, and waist circumference more effectively; however, both groups led to higher TG levels, with non-significant numerical improvements observed in SBP and DBP in both groups. In addition, both treatment groups reduced the HAM-D score and had a similar MDD remission rate.

Abstract
Self-management behavior among diabetes patients is essential to monitor blood sugar levels, make necessary lifestyle changes, and help patients reduce their risk of complications from diabetes. We assessed the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its association with self-management behavior and sociodemographic characteristics among 310 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) attending different diabetes care centers in northern Saudi Arabia. We evaluated the self-management behaviors of patients with T2DM using a validated Arabic version of the Summary of Diabetes Self-Care Activities Scale. Regarding MS, we applied the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) Adult Treatment Plan-3 (ATP-3) guidelines. A logistic regression analysis was used to identify the predictors of MS. We found that more than one-third (36.5%) of patients had MS according to the NCEP ATP-3 criteria. The prevalence of MS was significantly associated with unsatisfactory self-management behaviors. Regarding sociodemographic predictors for MS, we found a significant association between gender (ref: female: Adjusted OR (AOR) = 1.89, 95%CI = 1.17-2.95, p = 0.007) and body mass index (ref.: normal range: AOR = 2.98, 95%CI = 1.31-5.07, p = 0.003). Our findings suggest a tailor-made multifaceted intervention to improve the self-management behaviors of T2DM patients, which, in turn, can reduce MS.

Abstract
In recent decades, diabetes mellitus (DM) has become a major global health problem owing to its high prevalence and increased incidence of diabetes-associated complications, including diabetic wounds (DWs), diabetic nephropathy, metabolic syndrome, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic neuropathy. In both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, tissue damage is organ-specific, but closely related to the overproduction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and hyperglycaemia-induced macrovascular system damage. However, existing therapies have limited effects on complete healing of diabetic complications. Fortunately, recent advances in functional nucleic acid materials have provided new opportunities for the treatment and diagnosis of diabetic complications. Functional nucleic acids possess independent structural functions that can replace traditional proteases and antibodies and perform specific biological non-genetic functions. This review summarises the current functional nucleic acid materials reported for the treatment of diabetic complications, including tetrahedral framework nucleic acids (tFNAs), short interfering RNA (siRNA), micorRNA (miRNA), locked nucleic acids, antisense oligonucleotides (ASOs), and DNA origami, which may assist in the development of novel nucleic acids with new functions and capabilities for better healing of diabetic complications.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a complex metabolic disorder with a global prevalence of 20%-25%. Early identification and intervention would help minimize the global burden on healthcare systems. Here, we measured over 400 proteins from ∼20,000 proteomes using data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry for 7,890 serum samples from a longitudinal cohort of 3,840 participants with two follow-up time points over 10 years. We then built a machine-learning model for predicting the risk of developing MetS within 10 years. Our model, composed of 11 proteins and the age of the individuals, achieved an area under the curve of 0.774 in the validation cohort (n = 242). Using linear mixed models, we found that apolipoproteins, immune-related proteins, and coagulation-related proteins best correlated with MetS development. This population-scale proteomics study broadens our understanding of MetS and may guide the development of prevention and targeted therapies for MetS.

Abstract
Obesity is a troubling public health problem as it increases risks of sleep disorders, respiratory complications, systemic arterial hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome (MetS). As a measure to counteract comorbidities associated with severe obesity, bariatric surgery stands out. This study aimed to investigate the adiponectin/leptin ratio in women with severe obesity with and without MetS who had undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) and to characterize the biochemical, glucose, and inflammatory parameters of blood in women with severe obesity before and after RYGB. Were enrolled females with severe obesity undergoing RYGP with MetS (n = 11) and without (n = 39). Anthropometric data and circulating levels of glucose, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), non-HDL total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), adiponectin, and leptin were assessed before and 6 months after RYGB. Significant reductions in weight, body mass index, and glucose, total cholesterol, LDL, and leptin were observed after surgery, with higher levels of HDL, adiponectin, and adiponectin/leptin ratio being observed after surgery compared to the preoperative values of those. This study demonstrated that weight loss induced by RYGB in patients with severe obesity with or without MetS improved biochemical and systemic inflammatory parameters, particularly the adiponectin/leptin ratio.

Abstract
Objective There is no consensus as to the best criterion for the evaluation of metabolic syndrome (MS), impairing the estimation of its prevalence. This study aims to compare MS estimates using three recommended definitions for adolescents based on a cross-sectional study nested in the Consortium of Brazilian Birth Cohorts in São Luís, Maranhão. Subjects and methods A total of 2,515 adolescents aged between 18 and 19 years were evaluated. The criteria of International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and National Cholesterol Education Program Panel III (NCEP-ATP) modified by Cook and cols. (2003) and De Ferranti and cols. (2004) defined SM. To compare the estimates of MS prevalence, the chi-square, Fisher´s exact and Cohen´s Kappa index tests were used. Results Among the 2,064 participants evaluated in the final sample. The prevalence of MS ranged from 4.2% (95% CI: 3.3-5.1) to 10.2% (95% CI: 8.8-11.4). When comparing the estimates of MS prevalence in the total sample and by sex, a statistically significant difference was observed. The agreement between the criteria ranged from 0.42 (CI 95%: 0.35-0.49) to 0.55 (CI 95%: 0.48-0.62) in the total sample, 0.33 (CI 95%: 0.24-0.42) to 0.59 (95%CI: 0.47-0.71) among boys and 0.39 (95% CI: 0.26-0.52) to 0.54 (95% CI: 0.44-0.64) among girls. Conclusion Different criteria provide different estimates for the prevalence of MS in adolescents, reflecting the importance of establishing a consensus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM There are few studies and inconsistent findings on the role of sleep-related parameters in the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among youths. In this study, we aim to investigate the relationship between sleep-related parameters and MetS among youths in a large sample size in Rafsanjan, a region in the southeast of Iran. METHODS The current cross-sectional study was performed on 3,006 young adults aged 15-35, who registered for Rafsanjan Youth Cohort Study (RYCS), as part of Rafsanjan Cohort Study (RCS)). In fact, RCS is a branch of the prospective epidemiological research studies in Iran (PERSIAN). In the present study, we included 2,867 youths after excluding some subjects with missing information on MetS components. MetS was diagnosed based on Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) criteria. Besides, data on sleep-related parameters were collected by self-report questionnaires. RESULTS The overall prevalence of MetS was 7.74% among the participants. In addition, bedtime, wake time, napping, night shift work, and sleep duration per night and day had no association with the higher odds of having MetS. In contrast, long sleep duration at night was associated with the lower odds of high waist circumference (WC) (OR: 0.82,95% CI :0.67-0.99). CONCLUSION In the present study, long sleep duration at night was associated with lower odds of central obesity. However, more longitudinal studies with the objective measurement of sleep-related parameters are needed to verify the associations reported in the current study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined the longitudinal association between (change in) physical activity (PA) with new onset of five risk factors of metabolic syndrome among 657 middle-aged adults (mean age 44.1 (standard deviation (SD) 8.6) years) who were free of the respective outcome at baseline, in a longitudinal cohort study spanning over 29 years. METHODS Levels of habitual PA and sports-related PA were assessed by a self-reported questionnaire. Incident elevated waist circumference (WC), elevated triglycerides (TG), reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterols (HDL), elevated blood pressure (BP), and elevated blood-glucose (BG) were assessed by physicians and by self-reported questionnaires. We calculated Cox proportional hazard ratio regressions and 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS Over time, participants developed (cases of incident risk factor; mean (SD) follow-up time) elevated WC (234 cases; 12.3 (8.2) years), elevated TG (292 cases; 11.1 (7.8) years), reduced HDL (139 cases; 12.4 (8.1) years), elevated BP (185 cases; 11.4 (7.5) years), or elevated BG (47 cases; 14.2 (8.5) years). For PA variables at baseline, risk reductions ranging between 37 and 42% for reduced HDL levels were detected. Furthermore, higher levels of PA (≥ 16.6 METh per week) were associated with a 49% elevated risk for incident elevated BP. Participants who increased PA levels over time, had risk reductions ranging between 38 and 57% for elevated WC, elevated TG and reduced HDL. Participants with stable high amounts of PA from baseline to follow-up had risk reductions ranging between 45 and 87% for incident reduced HDL and elevated BG. CONCLUSIONS PA at baseline, starting PA engagement, maintaining and increasing PA level over time are associated with favorable metabolic health outcomes.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a risk factor for the development and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, it is unclear whether decreased renal function affects MS. Through a longitudinal study, we investigated the effect of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) changes on MS in participants with an eGFR above 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. A cross-sectional (n = 7107) and a 14-year longitudinal study (n = 3869) were conducted to evaluate the association between MS and eGFR changes from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study data. The participants were categorized by their eGFR levels (60–75, 75–90, and 90–105 versus ≥ 105 mL/min/1.73 m2). In a cross-sectional analysis, the MS prevalence was significantly increased with a decline in the eGFR in a fully adjusted model. The odds ratio of individuals with an eGFR of 60–75 mL/min/1.73 m2 was observed to be the highest (2.894; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.984–4.223). In the longitudinal analysis, incident MS significantly increased with an eGFR decline in all the models, with the highest hazard ratio in the lowest eGFR group (1.803; 95% CI, 1.286–2.526). In joint interaction analysis, all covariates showed a significant joint effect with an eGFR decline on the incident MS. MS incidents are associated with eGFR changes in the general population without CKD.

Abstract
The current healthcare system is widely based on the concept of “one size fit for all”, which emphasizes treating a disease by prescribing the same drug to all patients with equivalent doses and dosing frequency. This medical treatment scenario has shown varied responses with either no or weak pharmacological effects and exaggerated adverse reactions preceded by more patient complications. The hitches to the concept of “one size fits all” have devoted the attention of many researchers to unlocking the concept of personalized medicine (PM). PM delivers customized therapy with the highest safety margin for an individual patient’s needs. PM has the potential to revolutionize the current healthcare system and pave the way to alter drug choices and doses according to a patient’s clinical responses, providing physicians with the best treatment outcomes. The 3D printing techniques is a solid-form fabrication method whereby successive layers of materials based on computer-aided designs were deposited to form 3D structures. The 3D printed formulation achieves PM goals by delivering the desired dose according to patient needs and drug release profile to achieve a patient’s personal therapeutic and nutritional needs. This pre-designed drug release profile attains optimum absorption and distribution, exhibiting maximum efficacy and safety profiles. This review aims to focus on the role of the 3D printing technique as a promising tool to design PM in metabolic syndrome (MS).

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To develop and validate the 4-year risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus among adults with metabolic syndrome. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study of a large multicenter cohort with broad validation. SETTINGS The derivation cohort was from 32 sites in China and the geographic validation cohort was from Henan population-based cohort study. RESULTS 568 (17.63) and 53 (18.67%) participants diagnosed diabetes during 4-year follow-up in the developing and validation cohort, separately. Age, gender, body mass index, diastolic blood pressure, fasting plasma glucose and alanine aminotransferase were included in the final model. The area under curve for the training and external validation cohort was 0.824 (95% CI, 0.759-0.889) and 0.732 (95% CI, 0.594-0.871), respectively. Both the internal and external validation have good calibration plot. A nomogram was constructed to predict the probability of diabetes during 4-year follow-up, and on online calculator is also available for a more convenient usage ( https://lucky0708.shinyapps.io/dynnomapp/ ). CONCLUSION We developed a simple diagnostic model to predict 4-year risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus among adults with metabolic syndrome, which is also available as web-based tools ( https://lucky0708.shinyapps.io/dynnomapp/ ).

Abstract
Background: Animal and cell model studies have implicated CAV1 in the pathophysiology of metabolic disorders. Our previous studies demonstrated a potential association of CAV1 rs1997623 C/A variant with pediatric metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Arab children. In the present study, we evaluate whether the CAV1 variant associates with MetS Arab adults as well. The association signal is further examined for ancestry-specific variation by considering cohorts of other ethnicities. Method: The CAV1 rs1997623 was genotyped in three cohorts of Arab (n = 479), South Asian (n = 660), and South East Asian (n = 362) ethnic adults from Kuwait. MetS status of the individuals was diagnosed using the IDF criteria (presence of central obesity and at least two abnormalities out of: elevated TG, low HDL, hypertension, or T2D). The quantitative measure of MetS was calculated as siMS = 2 × WC/Height + FBG/5.6 + TG/1.7 + SBP/130–HDL/1.02 for males or HDL/1.28 for females. Allelic associations with quantitative and dichotomous MetS traits were assessed using linear and logistic regression models adjusted for age and sex. In addition, empirical p-values (Pemp) were generated using max(T) permutation procedure based on 10,000 permutations. Results: The CAV1 variant was significantly associated with MetS status (OR = 1.811 [1.25–2.61]; p-value = 0.0015; Pemp = 0.0013) and with siMS (Effect size = 0.206; p-value = 0.0035; Pemp = 0.0028) in the cohort of Arab individuals. The association was weak and insignificant in the South Asian and South East Asian cohorts (OR = 1.19 and 1.11; p-values = 0.25 and 0.67, respectively). Conclusion: The reported association of CAV1 rs1997623 C/A with MetS in Arab pediatric population is now demonstrated in an adult Arab cohort as well. The weak association signal seen in the Asian cohorts lead us to propose a certain extent of ethnic-specificity in CAV1 rs1997623 association with MetS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The COVID-19 pandemic has limited face-to-face treatment, triggering a change in the structure of existing healthcare services. Unlike other groups, workers in underserved areas have relatively poor access to healthcare. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the effects of video-based telehealth services using a mobile personal health record (PHR) app for vulnerable workers with metabolic risk factors. METHODS A prospective observational study was conducted with 117 participants and 27 healthcare professionals for 16 weeks. Participants visited the research institution three times (at weeks 1, 8, and 16) and underwent health check-ups and used various features of the mobile PHR app. Healthcare professionals observed the participants's data using the monitoring system and performed appropriate interventions. The primary outcome measures were to evaluate the effects of services on changes in the participants' metabolic risk factors, and secondary outcome measures were to analyze changes in the participants' lifestyle and service satisfaction, and to observe service use through usage logs. One-way repeated measures ANOVA and Scheffé's test were performed to observe changes in participants' health status and lifestyle, and a paired t-test was performed to analyze changes in service satisfaction. Finally, in-depth interviews with healthcare professionals were performed using semi-structured questionnaires to understand service providers' perspectives after the end of the study. RESULTS Systolic blood pressure (F = 7.32, P <.001), diastolic blood pressure (F = 11.30, P <.001), body weight (F = 29.53, P <.001), BMI (F = 17.31, P <.001), waist circumference (F = 17.33, P <.001), fasting blood glucose (F = 5.11, P =.007), and triglycerides (F = 4.66, P =.01) showed significant improvements with time points, whereas high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (F = 3.35, P =.067) did not. The dietary score (F = 3.26, P =.04) showed a significant improvement with time points, whereas physical activity (F = 1.06, P =.34) did not. In terms of service satisfaction, only lifestyle improvement (P <.001) showed a significant difference. COVID-19 has affected the performance of healthcare professionals, thereby changing the perspectives toward healthcare technology services. CONCLUSIONS We evaluated the effectiveness of video-based telehealth services supporting workers' health status and lifestyle interventions using healthcare technologies such as the mobile PHR app, tele-monitoring, and video teleconsultation. Our results indicate that as a complementary means, its utility can be expanded in the field of occupational safety and health to overcome the limitations of face-to-face treatment due to COVID-19 in the future.

Abstract
Longitudinal studies evaluating the relationship between UPF consumption and the incidence of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) and its components are still scarce. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of UPF consumption on the incidence of MetS and its components in adults. A prospective study was conducted with 896 participants from the 1978/79 Ribeirão Preto cohort, São Paulo, Brazil. UPF consumption was evaluated in %kcal and %g at ages 23–25 years. Incidence of MetS and its components were estimated at ages 37–39 years, according to the Joint Interim Statement criteria. Poisson regression was used to assess associations, and interactions with sex were investigated. UPF consumption had no association with MetS (%kcal Adjusted PR: 1.00; 95% CI: 0.99–1.01; %g Adjusted PR: 1.00; 95% CI: 0.99–1.01). However, women with higher UPF consumption, in %kcal and %g, had a higher risk of abdominal obesity (%kcal: p = 0.030; %g: p = 0.003); and women with higher UPF consumption, in %g, had a higher risk of low HDL-cholesterol (p = 0.041). For the other components of MetS, no significant associations were observed in either sex. These findings suggest evidence of no association between UPF consumption and MetS; however, consumption of UPF was associated with increased WC and low HDL-c, but only in women.

Abstract
Diets high in bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, have been used to mitigate metabolic syndrome (MetS). Polyphenols are a large group of naturally occurring bioactive compounds, classified into two main classes: non-flavonoids and flavonoids. Flavonoids are distributed in foods, such as fruits, vegetables, tea, red wine, and cocoa. Studies have already demonstrated the benefits of flavonoids on the cardiovascular and nervous systems, as well as cancer cells. The present review summarizes the results of clinical studies that evaluated the effects of flavonoids on the components of the MetS and associated complications when offered as supplements over the long term. The results show that flavonoids can significantly modulate several metabolic parameters, such as lipid profile, blood pressure, and blood glucose. Only theaflavin and catechin were unable to affect metabolic parameters. Moreover, only body weight and body mass index were unaltered. Thus, the evidence presented in this systematic review offers bases in support of a flavonoid supplementation, held for at least 3 weeks, as a strategy to improve several metabolic parameters and, consequently, reduce the risk of diseases associated with MetS. This fact becomes stronger due to the rare side effects reported with flavonoids.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the association between the years of work of food handlers in the foodservice and excess weight among Brazilian low-income food handlers. A total of 559 food handlers from all Brazilian regions were characterized using a questionnaire. Weight and height were measured to estimate the Body Mass Index and classify the individuals. The association between food handlers' years of work in the foodservice, anthropometric status, and other variables (gender, age group, educational level, participation in a government program and per capita income at home and energetic consumption) were performed using Pearson's chi-square test (p < 0.05). Multinomial logistic regression analyses were performed (p < 0.05) as well as sensitivity tests using the outcome continuously and transformed, excluding underweight individuals, in a multivariate linear regression model. Most of the sample was female (63.1%), aged between 21 and 40 years old (63.5%), and 53.3% had studied up to complete elementary school. Almost 41% of the food handlers had less than half the minimum wage per capita income. Of the evaluated individuals, 59.9% presented excess weight. There was an association with family per capita income (Odds Ratio - OR: 1.73; Confidence interval - CI95%: 1.09-2.75); handlers whose per capita income was ≤0.5 minimum wage had a 73% higher chance of obesity than those with higher income. Working in foodservive ≥3 years increased the chance of being overweight by 96% compared to those who work for <3 years (OR: 1.96; CI95%: 1.11-3.49). No significant association was found between the years of work of food handlers in the foodservice and obesity. Since work-related factors may contribute to the high prevalence of excess weight, including working in a food handling environment, the government and employers should consider workplace interventions. These would guide the food handlers in avoiding high rates of excess weight and their consequences on public health. Excess weight is an important driver of costs in the workplace associated with absenteeism, job change, and diseases. More studies are necessary to clarify the relationship between the factors related to work and the anthropometric status of food handlers since excess weight is multifactorial.

Abstract
Medicinal plants possess natural compounds that can be used as an alternative for synthetic medicines that may cause long-term side effects on patients such as neurocognitive effects, muscular and hepatic toxicity. Metabolic Syndrome is associated with increased risk of several diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dyslipidemia, and hypertension thus, becoming the greatest challenge as a growing public health concern worldwide. Latin-American countries possess a wide diversity of medicinal plants that have been used to treat different health conditions since pre-Hispanic times. Eryngium spp. has been studied due to their beneficial properties mainly to treat diabetes, dyslipidemia, blood pressure, and digestive problems. This review gives an update mainly on the pharmacological activities of the Eryngium spp., summarizing the biological activities and plausible mechanism of action of their bioactive components toward metabolic syndrome. For instance, flavonoids and tannins proved to increase the levels of HDL and reduced the levels of VLDL, LDL. On the other hand, phenolic acids improved glucose metabolism through the inhibition of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase and glucose 6-phosphatase (G6Pase) and reestablished the impaired activity of enzymes related to glucose oxidation and glycogen synthesis. The terpenes and sesquiterpenes like β-farnese, β-pinene, and calamenene exhibited a protective effect by reducing the oxidizing damage by the regulation of the Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS). Saponins controlled the dyslipidemia by reducing the serum concentrations of lipids, triglycerides and total cholesterol. Finally, the aerial parts of Eryngium had the capacity of inhibiting dietary carbohydrate digestive enzymes, thus controlling glucose levels. The Eryngium plant is normally consumed as an infusion to obtain the benefits of the plants, however novel technologies such as cavitation, ultrasound assisted, microwave assisted, and supercritical fluid have been applied to improve the extraction yields and selectivity of bioactive compounds. The common treatment to control diabetic dyslipidemia are synthetic medicines such as metformin and ezetimibe, which allows the regulation of glucose, cholesterol and insulin resistance. However, patients that take these medications may present side effects such as muscular toxicity, hepatic toxicity, neurocognitive effects, just to name a few. More studies regarding the efficacy and safety of the use of traditional medicinal herbs are required. However, these materials may be used in the treatment of diabetes related conditions to ensure life quality and reduce side effects among the diabetic population.

Abstract
Introduction This work was aimed to develop a Curcuma oil-based self-nanoemulsifying drug delivery system (SNEDDS) 3D-printed polypills containing glimepiride (GMD) and rosuvastatin (RSV) for treatment of dyslipidemia in patients with diabetes as a model for metabolic syndrome (MS). Methods Compartmentalized 3D printed polypills were prepared and studied in streptozotocin/poloxamer induced diabetic/dyslipidemic rats. The pharmacokinetic parameters of GMD and RSV in the prepared polypills were evaluated. Blood glucose level, lipid profile, antioxidant, and biochemical markers activities were investigated. Also, histopathological examination of the liver and pancreas was carried out. The atherosclerotic index, the area of islets of Langerhans, and liver steatosis lesion scores were calculated. Results The developed SNEDDS-loaded GMD/RSV polypills showed acceptable quality control characteristics with a high relative bioavailability of 217.16% and 224.28% for GMD and RSV, respectively, when compared with the corresponding non-SNEDDS pills. The prepared polypills showed dramatic lowering in blood glucose levels and substantial improvement in lipid profile and hepatic serum biomarkers as well as remarkable decrease in serum antioxidants in response to Poloxamer 407 intoxication. The prepared polypills decreased the risk of atherosclerosis and coronary disease by boosting the level of high-density lipoprotein and lowering both triglyceride and low-density lipoprotein. Microscopic examination showed normal hepatic sinusoids and high protection level with less detectable steatosis in the examined hepatocytes. Normal size pancreatic islets with apparently normal exocrine acini and pancreatic duct were also noticed. Conclusion This formulation strategy clearly shows the potential of the developed polypills in personalized medicine for treatment of patients with MS.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Health consequences of nighttime eating, as a publicly discussed eating behavior type, have been speculated lately. Nighttime eating has been linked to various metabolic outcomes including hyperlipidemia, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperglycemia, weight gain, elevated blood pressure, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, and cardiorenal outcomes such as atherosclerosis, a decline in eGFR, and proteinuria. RECENT FINDINGS Although the exact underlying pathophysiological mechanism is not yet clear, multiple hypotheses including disrupted circadian rhythm, altered hormonal levels, and decline in cellular regeneration have been proposed. In this review, we aim to evaluate the growing literature on nighttime eating behavior in terms of metabolic and cardiorenal outcomes, pathophysiological basis, and potential therapeutic alternatives.

Abstract
Background A cluster of interconnected cardiometabolic risk factors characterizes metabolic Syndrome (MS). The prevalence of MS is increasing worldwide, but there is not a meta-analysis of this prevalence in the Brazilian population. We aimed to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among adult general population in Brazil through a meta‑analysis study. Methods Original research studies were searched at PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and SciELO databases, from 2011 to 2021. We used the Joanna Briggs Institute tool to assess the quality of included studies. The random effect model was used to estimate the pooled prevalence of MS. Subgroup and meta-regression analysis were conducted for explored heterogeneity and used the Funnel Plot and Egger’s test to assess publication bias. The study was performed based on the criteria of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). Results The search in electronic databases identified 1598 records. From this total, 26 studies were eligible to be included in the final analysis. The overall pooled prevalence among the general population of Brazil was 33% with high heterogeneity observed. By gender, the prevalences were 26% in males and 38% in females. By criteria that was used to define MS, the prevalence were 31% in NCEP ATP III, 25% in JIS, 37% in IDF/NHLBI/AHA/WHF/IAS/IASO and 33% in IDF criteria. The prevalence in different habitat was 34% in urban, 15% in rural, 28% in quilombola and 37% in indigenous. In different regions was 37% in the South, 30% in Southeast, 38% in North, 31% in Northeast and 39% in Midwest. The pooled prevalence of MS with age was < 45 years: 43% and ≥ 45 years: 42% and the prevalence based on year of study implementation was 31% in 2015–2019, 35% in 2010–2014 and 28% in 2005–2009. There were no statistically significant differences between subgroups. Most of the studies showed high quality assessment criteria’s except adequate sample size criteria and many studies participants were not sampled in an appropriate way. Conclusions Our review indicates a high prevalence of MS in the healthy Brazilian adult population, when compared to others countries and with a world estimate. Abstract
Background: This narrative review presents the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS), along with its components, and cognition-related disorders, as well as the potential reversal role of diet against cognitive impairment by modulating MetS. Methods: An electronic research in Medline (Pubmed) and Scopus was conducted. Results: MetS and cognitive decline share common cardiometabolic pathways as MetS components can trigger cognitive impairment. On the other side, the risk factors for both MetS and cognitive impairment can be reduced by optimizing the nutritional intake. Clinical manifestations such as dyslipidemia, hypertension, diabetes and increased central body adiposity are nutrition-related risk factors present during the prodromal period before cognitive impairment. The Mediterranean dietary pattern stands among the most discussed predominantly plant-based diets in relation to cardiometabolic disorders that may prevent dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and other cognition-related disorders. In addition, accumulating evidence suggests that the consumption of specific dietary food groups as a part of the overall diet can improve cognitive outcomes, maybe due to their involvement in cardiometabolic paths. Conclusions: Early MetS detection may be helpful to prevent or delay cognitive decline. Moreover, this review highlights the importance of healthy nutritional habits to reverse such conditions and the urgency of early lifestyle interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), and CVD is a major cause of mortality in patients with T2D. The CAPTURE study investigated the contemporary (2019) prevalence of established CVD in adults with T2D around the world. We report the findings from Brazil. METHODS The multinational, non-interventional, cross-sectional CAPTURE study was conducted across 13 countries from five continents. The current manuscript explores data for the CAPTURE study sample in Brazil. Standardized demographic and clinical data were collected from adults with T2D aged ≥ 18 years attending a single routine healthcare visit in primary or specialized care between December 2018 and September 2019. Data were analyzed descriptively. RESULTS Data from 912 adults with T2D were collected in the CAPTURE study in Brazil, with 822 patients from primary care and 90 patients from specialized care. Median (interquartile range [IQR]) patient characteristics were as follows: age 64 years (57; 71), diabetes duration 11 years (6; 19), glycated hemoglobin 7.7% (6.7; 9.1), and body mass index 29.5 kg/m2 (26.4; 33.5); 59% were female. The CVD prevalence and atherosclerotic CVD prevalence in the Brazil sample were 43.9% (95% confidence interval [CI] 40.9; 46.8) and 37.6% (95% CI 34.7; 40.5), respectively. The majority of patients with CVD had atherosclerotic CVD (85.8%). For the specific CVD subtypes, coronary heart disease prevalence was 27.9% (95% CI 25.2; 30.5), heart failure was 12.4% (95% CI 10.4; 14.4), cerebrovascular disease was 8.7% (95% CI 6.8; 10.5), and carotid artery disease was 3.4% (95% CI 2.3; 4.5). Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and/or sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 inhibitors with proven cardiovascular benefit were prescribed to 15.5% of patients with CVD, compared with 18.4% of patients without CVD. CONCLUSIONS CAPTURE was the first multinational, standardized study to provide contemporary data on CVD prevalence in adults with T2D in Brazil, and it demonstrated that almost one in two adults with T2D had established CVD. Except for carotid artery disease, the prevalence of all CVD subtypes in adults with T2D in Brazil appeared higher than the global CAPTURE prevalence. Trial registration NCT03786406, NCT03811288.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to examine whether simultaneously meeting the combined guidelines of accelerometer-assessed moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) and self-reported muscle-strengthening activity (MSA) was associated with lower odds of metabolic syndrome (MetS) than meeting neither or 1 of the guidelines among the Koreans. METHODS This cross-sectional analysis included 1,355 participants from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2014-2015). Logistic regression was used to analyze the associations across groups of MVPA-MSA guideline adherence (meeting neither [reference]; meeting MVPA only; meeting MSA only; meeting both MVPS and MSA) with MetS components (abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia, low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C], hypertension, and hyperglycemia). The odds ratios (ORs) were adjusted for covariates (e.g., sex, age, body mass index, and accelerometer wearing time). RESULTS MSA only significantly reduced the OR for abdominal obesity (OR, 0.34; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.13 to 0.91). Meeting both MVPA and MSA reduced the OR for hypertriglyceridemia (OR, 0.59; 95% CI, 0.39 to 0.88) and low HDL-C (OR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.31 to 0.68). Compared to meeting neither, MVPA only (OR, 0.63; 95% CI, 0.44 to 0.89) and both MVPA and MSA (OR, 0.46; 95% CI, 0.28 to 0.76) significantly reduced the OR for MetS. CONCLUSIONS Combined MVPA-MSA was more beneficially associated with MetS prevalence than MVPA only and MSA only. Considering that more than 85% of Korean adults do not meet both the MVPA and MSA guidelines, public health actions to promote adherence should be supported.

Abstract
Background This cohort study created a risk equation of CVD for the Uyghur and Kazakh ethnic groups with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Xinjiang and its associated factors, evaluated the model’s feasibility, and provided theoretical support for the prevention and early diagnosis of CVD. Methods A total of 5655 participants from Xinyuan and Jiashi counties in Xinjiang from 2010 to 2012 were selected, including 3770 and 1885 training and validation samples, respectively. A factor analysis was performed on 975 patients with MetS in the training sample, whereas potential factors related to CVD were extracted from 21 MetS biomarkers. Cox regression was used to create and verify a CVD-risk prediction model based on training samples. The receiver operating characteristic curve was drawn to evaluate the model’s prediction efficiency. Results The cumulative incidence of CVD was 9.20% (training sample, 9.12%; validation sample, 9.36%). Nine potential factors were extracted from the training sample population with MetS to predict the CVD risk: lipid (hazard ratio [HR], 1.205), obesity (HR, 1.047), liver function (HR, 1.042), myocardial enzyme (HR, 1.008), protein (HR, 1.024), blood pressure (HR, 1.027), liver enzyme (HR, 1.012), renal metabolic (HR, 1.015), and blood glucose (HR, 1.010). The area under the curve of the training and validation samples was 0.841 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.821–0.861) and 0.889 (95% CI, 0.870–0.909), respectively. Conclusion The CVD prediction model created with nine potential factors in patients with MetS in Kazakh and Uyghur has a good predictive power.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The presence of metabolic syndrome among diabetes patients is frequent and is associated with an increased incidence of chronic complications and mortality. Despite several studies have been conducted, there is no overall estimation on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among type 1 diabetic patients. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of metabolic syndrome among patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus. METHODS Medline via PubMed, CINAHL, ScienceDirect, Ovid, Google Scholar, ResearchGate and African Journals Online were searched by limiting publication period from January 2005 to October 2020. Data were extracted with a standardized format prepared in Microsoft Excel and exported to Stata 16.0 for analyses. The I2 statistic was used to check heterogeneity across the included studies. DerSimonian and Laird random-effects model was applied to estimate pooled prevalence and 95% confidence interval across studies. Funnel plot symmetry, Begg's test and Egger's regression test were used to determine the presence of publication bias. Subgroup and sensitivity analysis as well as meta-regression were conducted to explore the potential sources of heterogeneity. The study protocol is registered on PROSPERO with reference number: CRD42020213435. RESULTS In this meta-analysis, a total of 27 studies with 45,811 study participants were included. The pooled prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 23.7% with substantial heterogeneity (I2 = 98.2%; P < 0.001). Geographical-based subgroup analysis revealed that the highest prevalence was observed in Australia (27.3%). As per meta-analysis of 17 studies, the pooled prevalence of metabolic syndrome in female type 1 diabetes patients (25.9%) was slightly higher than male T1DM patients (22.5%). CONCLUSION Nearly a quarter of the type 1 diabetes mellitus patients were affected by metabolic syndrome. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the prevention and control of the epidemic and for the reduction of the morbidity and mortality associated with metabolic syndrome among type 1 diabetes mellitus patients.
