Abstract
The hydrogen molecule can effectively regulate plant growth and development, improving plant resistance to abiotic stresses. However, studies regarding the optimal concentration of hydrogen and the associated mechanisms of action in organisms are lacking. This study showed that the maximum germination rate of radish seeds decreased from 90 % to 50 % under the stress of cadmium ions (Cd2+), and hydrogen nanobubble (NB) water significantly alleviated the stress effect of Cd2+ on radish seed germination. A hydrogen concentration of 0.8 ppm had the best effect, reducing Cd2+ accumulation in radish seeds by 63.23 % and increasing the maximum germination rate from 50 % to 65 %. At concentrations exceeding 1.2 ppm, the beneficial effect of hydrogen was weakened or even reversed. Consequently, we integrated the concept of the oxidative window into a REDOX balance model and demonstrated that an appropriate hydrogen concentration can effectively maintain the REDOX state within organisms. Transcriptome sequencing analysis revealed that hydrogen NB water modulated Cd2+ absorption and accumulation in seeds by regulating cell wall components, alleviating oxidative stress through oxidoreductase activity, and enhancing nutrient synthesis and metabolism. This collectively alleviated the inhibitory effect of Cd2+ on seed germination. This study is helpful for further understanding the effect of hydrogen concentration on the REDOX balance of seed germination, providing a theoretical basis for selecting hydrogen concentration to improve its effectiveness in agricultural fields.

Abstract
Salt-induced stress poses a significant barrier to agricultural productivity by impeding crop growth. Presently, environmentalists are dedicated to safeguarding food security by enhancing agricultural yields in challenging environments. Biostimulants play a crucial role in mitigating abiotic stresses in crop production, and among these, plant essential oils (EOs) stand out as organic substances with diverse biological effects on living organisms. Among the natural promoters of plant growth, Rosmarinus officinalis L. essential oil (RoEO) has gained considerable attention. Although the manifold effects of essential oils (EOs) on plant growth have been extensively demonstrated, their impact on salt stress tolerance in durum wheat seedlings remains unexplored. This investigation was undertaken to evaluate the biostimulatory capabilities of RoEO on the durum wheat cultivar "Mahmoudi." The effects of three RoEO concentrations (1, 2.5, and 5 ppm) on seed germination, growth establishment, and the induction of salt resistance under salinity conditions (150 mM NaCl) were tested. At 5 ppm, RoEO enhanced seedlings' tolerance to salinity by improving growth and reducing membrane deterioration and oxidative stress-induced damage. The expression profile analyses of seven stress-related genes (TdNHX1, TdSOS1, TdSOD, TdCAT, TdGA20-ox1, TdNRT2.1, and TdGS) using RT-qPCR showed enhancement of several important genes in durum wheat seedlings treated with 5 ppm RoEO, even under control conditions, which may be related to salt stress tolerance. The results indicate that the application of RoEO suggests a possible alternative strategy to increase salt tolerance in durum wheat seedlings towards better growth quality, thus increasing ROS scavenging and activation of antioxidant defense.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hydrogen gas (H2), a novel and beneficial gaseous molecule, plays a significant role in plant growth and development processes. Hydrogen-rich water (HRW) is regarded as a safe and easily available way to study the physiological effects of H2 on plants. Several recent research has shown that HRW attenuates stress-induced seed germination inhibition; however, the underlying modes of HRW on seed germination remain obscure under non-stress condition. RESULTS In this current study, we investigated the possible roles of gibberellin (GA) and abscisic acid (ABA) in HRW-regulated seed germination in wax gourd (Benincasa hispida) through pharmacological, physiological, and transcriptome approaches. The results showed that HRW application at an optimal dose (50% HRW) significantly promoted seed germination and shortened the average germination time (AGT). Subsequent results suggested that 50% HRW treatment stimulated GA production by regulating GA biosynthesis genes (BhiGA3ox, BhiGA2ox, and BhiKAO), whereas it had no effect on the content of ABA and the expression of its biosynthesis (BhiNCED6) and catabolism genes (BhiCYP707A2) but decreased the expression of ABA receptor gene (BhiPYL). In addition, inhibition of GA production by paclobutrazol (PAC) could block the HRW-mediated germination. Treatment with ABA could hinder HRW-mediated seed germination and the ABA biosynthesis inhibitor sodium tungstate (ST) could recover the function of HRW. Furthermore, RNA-seq analysis revealed that, in the presence of GA or ABA, an abundance of genes involved in GA, ABA, and ethylene signal sensing and transduction might involve in HRW-regulated germination. CONCLUSIONS This study portrays insights into the mechanism of HRW-mediated seed germination, suggesting that HRW can regulate the balance between GA and ABA to mediate seed germination through ethylene signals in wax gourd.

Abstract
A significant threat to the ongoing rise in temperature caused by global warming. Plants have many stress-resistance mechanisms, which is responsible for maintaining plant homeostasis. Abiotic stresses largely increase gaseous molecules' synthesis in plants. The study of gaseous signaling molecules has gained attention in recent years. The role of gaseous molecules, such as nitric oxide (NO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), and ethylene, in plants under temperature high-temperature stress are discussed in the current review. Recent studies revealed the critical function that gaseous molecules play in controlling plant growth and development and their ability to respond to various abiotic stresses. Here, we provide a thorough overview of current advancements that prevent heat stress-related plant damage via gaseous molecules. We also explored and discussed the interaction of gaseous molecules. In addition, we provided an overview of the role played by gaseous molecules in high-temperature stress responses, along with a discussion of the knowledge gaps and how this may affect the development of high-temperature-resistant plant species.

Abstract
Theobromine is an important quality component in tea plants (Camellia sinensis), which is produced from 7-methylxanthine by theobromine synthase (CsTbS), the key rate-limiting enzyme in theobromine biosynthetic pathway. Our transcriptomics and widely targeted metabolomics analyses suggested that CsMYB114 acted as a potential hub gene involved in the regulation of theobromine biosynthesis. The inhibition of CsMYB114 expression using antisense oligonucleotides (ASO) led to a 70.21% reduction of theobromine level in leaves of the tea plant, which verified the involvement of CsMYB114 in theobromine biosynthesis. Furthermore, we found that CsMYB114 was located in the nucleus of the cells and showed the characteristic of a transcription factor. The dual luciferase analysis, a yeast one-hybrid assay, and an electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) showed that CsMYB114 activated the transcription of CsTbS, through binding to CsTbS promoter. In addition, a microRNA, miR828a, was identified that directly cleaved the mRNA of CsMYB114. Therefore, we conclude that CsMYB114, as a transcription factor of CsTbS, promotes the production of theobromine, which is inhibited by miR828a through cleaving the mRNA of CsMYB114.

Abstract
Seed dormancy often hinders direct seeding efforts that are attempting to restore degraded landscapes. Gibberellic acid (GA3) can be applied to physiologically dormant seeds to induce germination, but this hormone is rarely effective, as it can degrade or be leached from the seed. We tested different polymer matrixes (polylactic acid, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and ethylcellulose) to apply and slowly release GA3 to the seed. These polymers were tested as seed coatings in either a powder, liquid, or a combination of powder and liquid forms. We found that a liquid ethylcellulose/GA3 coating generally outperformed the other polymers and applications methods using our test species Penstemon palmeri. With this top-performing treatment, seed germination was 3.0- and 3.9-fold higher at 15 °C and 25 °C, respectively. We also evaluated the liquid ethylcellulose/GA3 coating on P. comharrenus, P. strictus, P. pachyphyllus, and P. eatonii. Again, the coating had a strong treatment response, with the degree of difference related to the relative level of dormancy of the species. Growth studies were also performed in pots to ensure that the side effects of GA3 overdosing were not present. Here, we found minimal differences in root length, shoot length, or biomass between plants grown from untreated and GA3-coated seeds.

Abstract
The ethylene response factor (ERF) transcription factors, which is one of the largest transcription factor families in plants, are involved in biological and abiotic stress response and play an important role in plant growth and development. In this study, the GmABR1 gene from the soybean inbred line Zhonghuang24 (ZH24)×Huaxia 3 (HX3) was investigated its aluminum (Al) tolerance. GmABR1 protein has a conserved domain AP2, which is located in the nucleus and has transcriptional activation ability. The results of real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR) showed that the GmABR1 gene presented a constitutive expression pattern rich in the root tip, stem and leaf tissues of HX3. After Al stress, the GmABR1 transcript was significantly increased in the roots. The transcripts of GmABR1 in the roots of HX3 treated with 50 µM AlCl3 was 51 times than that of the control. The GmABR1 was spatiotemporally specific with the highest expression levels when Al concentration was 50 µM, which was about 36 times than that of the control. The results of hematoxylin staining showed that the root tips of GmABR1-overexpression lines were stained the lightest, followed by the control, and the root tips of GmABR1 RNAi lines were stained the darkest. The concentrations of Al3+ in root tips were 207.40 µg/g, 147.74 µg/g and 330.65 µg/g in wild type (WT), overexpressed lines and RNAi lines, respectively. When AlCl3 (pH4.5) concentration was 100 µM, all the roots of Arabidopsis were significantly inhibited. The taproot elongation of WT, GmABR1 transgenic lines was 69.6%, 85.6%, respectively. When treated with Al, the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) in leaves of WT increased to 3.03 µg/g, while that of transgenic Arabidopsis increased from 1.66-2.21 µg/g, which was lower than that of WT. Under the Al stress, the Al stress responsive genes such as AtALMT1 and AtMATE, and the genes related to ABA pathway such as AtABI1, AtRD22 and AtRD29A were up-regulated. The results indicated that GmABR1 may jointly regulate plant resistance to Al stress through genes related to Al stress response and ABA response pathways.

Abstract
Auxin is a crucial phytohormone that has various effects on the regulators of plant growth and development. Auxin signal transduction is mainly controlled by two gene families: auxin response factor (ARF) and auxin/indole-3-acetic acid (Aux/IAA). ARFs are plant-specific transcription factors that bind directly to auxin response elements in the promoters of auxin-responsive genes. ARF proteins contain three conserved regions: a conserved N-terminal B3 DNA-binding domain, a variable intermediate middle region domain that functions in activation or repression, and a C-terminal domain including the Phox and Bem1p region for dimerization, similar to the III and IV elements of Aux/IAA, which facilitate protein-protein interaction through homodimerization of ARF proteins or heterodimerization of ARF and Aux/IAA proteins. In the two decades following the identification of the first ARF, 23 ARF members have been identified and characterized in Arabidopsis. Using whole-genome sequencing, 22, 25, 23, 25, and 36 ARF genes have been identified in tomato, rice, wheat, sorghum, and maize, respectively, in addition to which the related biofunctions of some ARFs have been reported. ARFs play crucial roles in regulating the growth and development of roots, leaves, flowers, fruits, seeds, responses to biotic and abiotic stresses, and phytohormone signal crosstalk. In this review, we summarize the research progress on the structures and functions of ARFs in Arabidopsis, tomato, and cereal crops, to provide clues for future basic research on phytohormone signaling and the molecular design breeding of crops.

Abstract
Although molecular hydrogen (H2) has potential therapeutic effects in animals, whether or how this gas functions in plant disease resistance has not yet been elucidated. Here, after rice stripe virus (RSV) infection, H2 production was pronouncedly stimulated in Zhendao 88, a resistant rice variety, compared to that in a susceptible variety (Wuyujing No.3). External H2 supply remarkably reduced the disease symptoms and RSV coat protein (CP) levels, especially in Wuyujing No.3. The above responses were abolished by the pharmacological inhibition of H2 production. The transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing a hydrogenase gene from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii also improved plant resistance. In the presence of H2, the transcription levels of salicylic acid (SA) synthetic genes were stimulated, and the activity of SA glucosyltransferases was suppressed, thus facilitating SA accumulation. Genetic evidence revealed that two SA synthetic mutants of Arabidopsis (sid2-2 and pad4) were more susceptible to RSV than the wild type (WT). The treatments with H2 failed to improve the resistance to RSV in two SA synthetic mutants. The above results indicated that H2 enhances rice resistance to RSV infection possibly through the SA-dependent pathway. This study might open a new window for applying the H2-based approach to improve plant disease resistance. IMPORTANCE Although molecular hydrogen has potential therapeutic effects in animals, whether or how this gas functions in plant disease resistance has not yet been elucidated. RSV was considered the most devastating plant virus in rice, since it could cause severe losses in field production. This disease was thus selected as a classical model to explore the interrelationship between molecular hydrogen and plant pathogen resistance. In this study, we discovered that both exogenous and endogenous H2 could enhance plant resistance against Rice stripe virus infection by regulating salicylic acid signaling. Compared with some frequently used agrochemicals, H2 is almost nontoxic. We hope that the findings presented here will serve as an opportunity for the scientific community to push hydrogen-based agriculture forward.

Abstract
Understanding the beneficial plant-microbe interactions is becoming extremely critical for deploying microbes imparting plant fitness and achieving sustainability in agriculture. Diazotrophic bacteria have the unique ability to survive without external sources of nitrogen and simultaneously promote host plant growth, but the mechanisms of endophytic interaction in cereals and legumes have not been studied extensively. We have studied the early interaction of two diazotrophic bacteria, Gluconacetobacter diazotrophicus (GAB) and Bradyrhizobium japonicum (BRH), in 15-day-old seedlings of rice and soybean up to 120 h after inoculation (hai) under low-nitrogen medium. Root colonization of GAB in rice was higher than that of BRH, and BRH colonization was higher in soybean roots as observed from the scanning electron microscopy at 120 hai. Peroxidase enzyme was significantly higher at 24 hai but thereafter was reduced sharply in soybean and gradually in rice. The roots of rice and soybean inoculated with GAB and BRH harvested from five time points were pooled, and transcriptome analysis was executed along with control. Two pathways, "Plant pathogen interaction" and "MAPK signaling," were specific to Rice-Gluconacetobacter (RG), whereas the pathways related to nitrogen metabolism and plant hormone signaling were specific to Rice-Bradyrhizobium (RB) in rice. Comparative transcriptome analysis of the root tissues revealed that several plant-diazotroph-specific differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and metabolic pathways of plant-diazotroph-specific transcripts, viz., chitinase, brassinosteroid, auxin, Myeloblastosis (MYB), nodulin, and nitrate transporter (NRT), were common in all plant-diazotroph combinations; three transcripts, viz., nitrate transport accessory protein (NAR), thaumatin, and thionin, were exclusive in rice and another three transcripts, viz., NAC (NAM: no apical meristem, ATAF: Arabidopsis thaliana activating factor, and CUC: cup-shaped cotyledon), ABA (abscisic acid), and ammonium transporter, were exclusive in soybean. Differential expression of these transcripts and reduction in pathogenesis-related (PR) protein expression show the early interaction. Based on the interaction, it can be inferred that the compatibility of rice and soybean is more with GAB and BRH, respectively. We propose that rice is unable to identify the diazotroph as a beneficial microorganism or a pathogen from an early response. So, it expressed the hypersensitivity-related transcripts along with PR proteins. The molecular mechanism of diazotrophic associations of GAB and BRH with rice vis-à-vis soybean will shed light on the basic understanding of host responses to beneficial microorganisms.

The Importance of Nitric Oxide as the Molecular Basis of the Hydrogen Gas Fumigation-Induced Alleviation of Cd Stress on Ganoderma lucidum. J Fungi (Basel) 2021; 8:jof8010010. Abstract
Whether or not hydrogen gas (H2) can reduce cadmium (Cd) toxicity in Ganoderma lucidum has remained largely unknown. Here, we report that Cd-induced growth inhibition in G. lucidum was significantly alleviated by H2 fumigation or hydrogen-rich water (HRW), evaluated by lower oxidative damage and Cd accumulation. Moreover, the amelioration effects of H2 fumigation were better than of HRW in an optimum concentration of H2 under our experimental conditions. Further results showed that H2-alleviated growth inhibition in G. lucidum was accompanied by increased nitric oxide (NO) level and nitrate reductase (NR) activity under Cd stress. On the other hand, the mitigation effects were reversed after removing endogenous NO with its scavenger cPTIO or inhibiting H2-induced NR activity with sodium tungstate. The role of NO in H2-alleviated growth inhibition under Cd stress was proved to be achieved through a restoration of redox balance, an increase in cysteine and proline contents, and a reduction in Cd accumulation. In summary, these results clearly revealed that NR-dependent NO might be involved in the H2-alleviated Cd toxicity in G. lucidum through rebuilding redox homeostasis, increasing cysteine and proline levels, and reducing Cd accumulation. These findings may open a new window for H2 application in Cd-stressed economically important fungi.

Abstract
Agriculture is the foundation of social development. Under the pressure of population growth, natural disasters, environmental pollution, climate change, and food safety, the interdisciplinary "new agriculture" is becoming an important trend of modern agriculture. In fact, new agriculture is not only the foundation of great health and new energy sources, but is also the cornerstone of national food security, energy security, and biosafety. Hydrogen agronomy focuses mainly on the mechanism of hydrogen gas (H2) biology effects in agriculture, and provides a theoretical foundation for the practice of hydrogen agriculture, a component of the new agriculture. Previous research on the biological effects of H2 focused chiefly on medicine. The mechanism of selective antioxidant is the main theoretical basis of hydrogen medicine. Subsequent experiments have demonstrated that H2 can regulate the growth and development of plant crops, edible fungus, and livestock, and enhance the tolerance of these agriculturally important organisms against abiotic and biotic stresses. Even more importantly, H2 can regulate the growth and development of crops by changing the soil microbial community composition and structure. Use of H2 can also improve the nutritional value and postharvest quality of agricultural products. Researchers have also shown that the biological functions of molecular hydrogen are mediated by modulating reactive oxygen species (ROS), nitric oxide (NO), and carbon monoxide (CO) signaling cascades in plants and microbes. This review summarizes and clarifies the history of hydrogen agronomy and describes recent progress in the field. We also argue that emerging hydrogen agriculture will be an important direction in the new agriculture. Further, we discuss several scientific problems in hydrogen agronomy, and suggest that the future of hydrogen agronomy depends on contributions by multiple disciplines. Important future research directions of hydrogen agronomy include hydrogen agriculture in special environments, such as islands, reefs, aircraft, and outer space.

Abstract
Heavy metal (HM) accumulation in the agricultural soil and its toxicity is a major threat for plant growth and development. HMs disrupt functional integrity of the plants, induces altered phenological and physiological responses and slashes down qualitative crop yield. Chemical messengers such as phytohormones, plant growth regulators and gasotransmitters play a crucial role in regulating plant growth and development under metal toxicity in plants. Understanding the intricate network of these chemical messengers as well as interactions of genes/metabolites/proteins associated with HM toxicity in plants is necessary for deciphering insights into the regulatory circuit involved in HM tolerance. The present review describes (a) the role of chemical messengers in HM-induced toxicity mitigation, (b) possible crosstalk between phytohormones and other signaling cascades involved in plants HM tolerance and (c) the recent advancements in biotechnological interventions including genetic engineering, genome editing and omics approaches to provide a step ahead in making of improved plant against HM toxicities.

Abstract
Aluminium (Al) toxicity inhibits soybean root growth, leading to insufficient water and nutrient uptake. Two soybean lines ('Magellan' and PI 567731) were identified differing in Al tolerance, as determined by primary root length ratio, total root length ratio, and root tip number ratio under Al stress. Serious root necrosis was observed in PI 567731, but not in Magellan under Al stress. An F8 recombinant inbred line population derived from a cross between Magellan and PI 567731 was used to map the quantitative trait loci (QTL) for Al tolerance. Three QTL on chromosomes 3, 13, and 20, with tolerant alleles from Magellan, were identified. qAl_Gm13 and qAl_Gm20 explained large phenotypic variations (13-27%) and helped maintain root elongation and initiation under Al stress. In addition, qAl_Gm13 and qAl_Gm20 were confirmed in near-isogenic backgrounds and were identified to epistatically regulate Al tolerance via internal detoxification instead of Al3+ exclusion. Phylogenetic and pedigree analysis identified the tolerant alleles of both loci derived from the US ancestral line, A.K.[FC30761], originally from China. Our results provide novel genetic resources for breeding Al-tolerant soybean and suggest that internal detoxification contributes to soybean tolerance to excessive soil Al.

Abstract
The emerging field of hydrogen biology has to date mainly been applied in medicine. However, hydrogen biology can also enable positive outcomes in agriculture. Agriculture faces significant challenges resulting from a growing population, climate change, natural disasters, environmental pollution, and food safety issues. In fact, hydrogen agriculture is a practical application of hydrogen biology, which may assist in addressing many of these challenges. It has been demonstrated that hydrogen gas (H2) may enhance plant tolerance towards abiotic and biotic stresses, regulate plant growth and development, increase nutritional values, prolong the shelf life, and decrease the nitrite accumulation during the storage of vegetables, as well as increase the resilience of livestock to pathogens. Our field trials show that H2 may have a promising potential to increase yield and improve the quality of agricultural products. This review aims to elucidate mechanisms for a novel agricultural application of H2 in China. Future development of hydrogen agriculture is proposed as well. Obviously, hydrogen agriculture belongs to a low carbon economy, and has great potential to provide "safe, tasty, healthy, and high-yield" agricultural products so that it may improve the sustainability of agriculture.

Abstract
Molecular hydrogen (H2) is now considered part of the suite of small molecules that can control cellular activity. As such, H2 has been suggested to be used in the therapy of diseases in humans and in plant science to enhance the growth and productivity of plants. Treatments of plants may involve the creation of hydrogen-rich water (HRW), which can then be applied to the foliage or roots systems of the plants. However, the molecular action of H2 remains elusive. It has been suggested that the presence of H2 may act as an antioxidant or on the antioxidant capacity of cells, perhaps through the scavenging of hydroxyl radicals. H2 may act through influencing heme oxygenase activity or through the interaction with reactive nitrogen species. However, controversy exists around all the mechanisms suggested. Here, the downstream mechanisms in which H2 may be involved are critically reviewed, with a particular emphasis on the H2 mitigation of stress responses. Hopefully, this review will provide insight that may inform future research in this area.

Abstract
Background. Gibberellins (GAs), a class of diterpenoid phytohormones, play an important role in regulation of plant growth and development. Among more than 130 different gibberellin molecules, only a few are bioactive. GA1, GA3, GA4, and GA7 regulate plant growth through promotion the degradation of the DELLA proteins, a family of nuclear growth repressors – negative regulator of GAs signaling. Recent studies on GAs biosynthesis, metabolism, transport, and signaling, as well as crosstalk with other phytohormones and environment have achieved great progress thanks to molecular genetics and functional genomics. Aim. In this review, we focused on the role of GAs in regulation of plant gtowth in abiotic stress conditions. Results. We represented a key information on GAs biosynthesis, signaling and functional activity; summarized current understanding of the crosstalk between GAs and auxin, cytokinin, abscisic acid and other hormones and what is the role of GAs in regulation of adaptation to drought, salinization, high and low temperature conditions, and heavy metal pollution. We emphasize that the effects of GAs depend primarily on the strength and duration of stress and the phase of ontogenesis and tolerance of the plant. By changing the intensity of biosynthesis, the pattern of the distribution and signaling of GAs, plants are able to regulate resistance to abiotic stress, increase viability and even avoid stress. The issues of using retardants – inhibitors of GAs biosynthesis to study the functional activity of hormones under abiotic stresses were discussed. Special attention was focused on the use of exogenous GAs for pre-sowing priming of seeds and foliar treatment of plants. Conclusion. Further study of the role of gibberellins in the acquisition of stress resistance would contribute to the development of biotechnology of exogenous use of the hormone to improve growth and increase plant yields under adverse environmental conditions.

Abstract
Although ample evidence showed that exogenous hydrogen gas (H2) controls a diverse range of physiological functions in both animals and plants, the selective antioxidant mechanism, in some cases, is questioned. Importantly, most of the experiments on the function of H2 in plants were based on pharmacological approaches due to the synthesis pathway(s) in plants are still unclear. Here, we observed that the seedling growth inhibition of Arabidopsis caused by low doses of mannitol could progressively recover by recuperation, accompanied with the increased hydrogenase activity and H2 synthesis. To investigate the functions of endogenous H2, a hydrogenase gene (CrHYD1) for H2 biosynthesis from Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was expressed in Arabidopsis. Transgenic plants could intensify higher H2 synthesis compared with wild type and Arabidopsis transformed with the empty vector, and exhibited enhanced osmotic tolerance in both germination and post-germination stages. In response to mannitol, transgenic plants enhanced L-Cys desulfhydrase (DES)-dependent hydrogen sulfide (H2S) synthesis in guard cells and thereafter stomatal closure. The application of des mutant further highlights H2S acting as a downstream molecule of endogenous H2 control of stomatal closure. These results thus open a new window for increasing plant tolerance to osmotic stress.

Abstract
Molecular hydrogen (H2) has been suggested to be a beneficial treatment for a range of species, from humans to plants. Hydrogenases catalyze the reversible oxidation of H2, and are found in many organisms, including plants. One of the cellular effects of H2 is the selective removal of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), specifically hydroxyl radicals and peroxynitrite. Therefore, the function of hydrogenases and the action of H2 needs to be reviewed in the context of the signalling roles of a range of redox active compounds. Enzymes can be controlled by the covalent modification of thiol groups, and although motifs targeted by nitric oxide (NO) can be predicted in hydrogenases sequences it is likely that the metal prosthetic groups are the target of inhibition. Here, a selection of hydrogenases, and the possibility of their control by molecules involved in redox signalling are investigated using a bioinformatics approach. Methods of treating plants with H2 along with the role of H2 in plants is also briefly reviewed. It is clear that studies report significant effects of H2 on plants, improving growth and stress responses, and therefore future work needs to focus on the molecular mechanisms involved.

Abstract
Abiotic stress is one of the major threats affecting plant growth and production. The harm of abiotic stresses includes the disruption of cellular redox homeostasis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and oxidative stress in the plant. Plants have different mechanisms to fight stress, and these mechanisms are responsible for maintaining the required homeostasis in plants. Recently, the study of gasotransmitters in plants has attracted much attention, especially for abiotic stress. In the present review, abiotic stressors were mostly found to induce gasotransmitter production in plants. Meanwhile, these gasotransmitters can enhance the activity of several antioxidant enzymes, alleviate the harmfulness of ROS, and enhance plant tolerance under various stress conditions. In addition, we introduced the interaction of gasotransmitters in plants under abiotic stress. With their promising applications in agriculture, gasotransmitters will be adopted in the near future.

Abstract
Aluminum (Al) toxicity is a serious problem for rice crop productivity in acidic soils worldwide. The present work was conducted to look out for the alteration in ROS homeostasis; metabolic fingerprint; and morphology in two contrasting Indica rice cultivars of North East India (NE India) to Al toxicity. Al stress led to excess accumulation of ROS (H2O2 and O2−), and this in turn induced ROS mediated cellular damage, as indicated by lipid peroxidation both qualitatively as well as quantitatively. This excessive ROS production also led to significant reduction in chlorophyll content and stomatal conductance. This was followed by the loss of photosynthetic efficiency as detected by chlorophyll fluorescence. This excessive damage due to ROS prompted us to check the anti-oxidative machinery. Antioxidants, especially enzymes (SOD, APX, POX, GR, CAT, DHAR, MDHAR) are very important players in maintenance of ROS homeostasis. In tolerant variety Disang, higher activity of these enzymes and vice versa in sensitive variety, was observed in response to Al treatment. The non-enzymatic antioxidants (proline, ascorbate and glutathione) also showed similar trend. Though the tolerant variety showed strong anti-oxidative machinery, it was unable to completely nullify the stress experienced by the seedlings. Organic acids are also important players in detoxification of Al stress through efflux in the rhizosphere. In tolerant genotype, citrate exudate was found to be more when compared to sensitive genotypes on exposure to high dose of Al. This is supported by higher abundance of FRDL4, a citrate transporter. Not only FRDL4, other stakeholders for Al stress response like ART1 and ALS1 depicted prominent transcript abundance in the tolerant variety. In conclusion, through this study detailed physiological and metabolic characterisation of two contrasting Indica rice varieties Disang and Joymati, native to NE India for Al tolerance was performed for the very first time.

Abstract
We report coding and long noncoding RNAs in maize upon phytohormone gibberellin stimulation. Plant hormone gibberellin (GA) orchestrates various facets of biological processes. Dissection the transcriptomic dynamics upon GA stimulation has biological significance. Feature of maize transcriptome in response to GA application remains largely elusive. Herein, two types of plants, one was with normal height, the other was GA-sensitive dwarfism, were selected from advanced backcross population for GA3 treatment with different concentrations. In control and GA3-treated plants, we identified a large number of coding and long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) through sequencing eight ribosomal-depleted RNA libraries. Transcripts encoding GA biosynthetic and metabolic enzymes KS, GA20ox, GA3ox, and GA2ox were significantly differentially expressed in GA3-treated samples. A total of 78 protein-coding transcripts were shared between GA3-treated normal height and dwarf plants. Shared transcripts encoding terpene synthase, MYB transcription factor, and receptor-like protein kinase were co-regulated with their corresponding partners. Out of identified lncRNAs, 22 and 34 significantly differentially expressed lncRNAs were responsive to GA application in normal height and dwarf plants, respectively. Shared GA-responsive lncRNAs were found in GA3-treated normal height and dwarf plants. Some lncRNAs corresponded to precursors of known miRNA, such as zma-miR528a and zma-miR528b. Multiple promising targets of significantly differentially expressed lncRNAs were discovered, including Lazy plant1 for auxin- and GA-mediated shoot gravitropism, bZIP transcription factor member for GA-controlled cell elongation. This study will improve our knowledge of GA-triggered transcriptome change and facilitate a comprehensive understanding of regulatory cascade centering on GA.

Abstract
Phytohormones regulate numerous important biological processes in plant development and biotic/abiotic stress response cascades. More than 50 and 100 years have passed since the initial discoveries of the phytohormones abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellins (GA), respectively. Over the past several decades, numerous elegant studies have demonstrated that ABA and GA antagonistically regulate many plant developmental processes, including seed maturation, seed dormancy and germination, root initiation, hypocotyl and stem elongation, and floral transition. Furthermore, as a well-established stress hormone, ABA plays a key role in plant responses to abiotic stresses, such as drought, flooding, salinity and low temperature. Interestingly, recent evidence revealed that GA are also involved in plant response to adverse environmental conditions. Consequently, the complex crosstalk networks between ABA and GA, mediated by diverse key regulators, have been extensively investigated and documented. In this updated mini-review, we summarize the most recent advances in our understanding of the antagonistically regulatory roles of ABA and GA in different stages of plant development and in various plant-environment interactions, focusing on the crosstalk between ABA and GA at the levels of phytohormone metabolism and signal transduction.

Abstract
Metabolism of molecular hydrogen (H₂) in bacteria and algae has been widely studied, and it has attracted increasing attention in the context of animals and plants. However, the role of endogenous H₂ in lateral root (LR) formation is still unclear. Here, our results showed that H₂-induced lateral root formation is a universal event. Naphthalene-1-acetic acid (NAA; the auxin analog) was able to trigger endogenous H₂ production in tomato seedlings, and a contrasting response was observed in the presence of N-1-naphthyphthalamic acid (NPA), an auxin transport inhibitor. NPA-triggered the inhibition of H₂ production and thereafter lateral root development was rescued by exogenously applied H₂. Detection of endogenous nitric oxide (NO) by the specific probe 4-amino-5-methylamino-2',7'-difluorofluorescein diacetate (DAF-FM DA) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analyses revealed that the NO level was increased in both NAA- and H₂-treated tomato seedlings. Furthermore, NO production and thereafter LR formation induced by auxin and H₂ were prevented by 2-4-carboxyphenyl-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide (cPTIO; a specific scavenger of NO) and the inhibitor of nitrate reductase (NR; an important NO synthetic enzyme). Molecular evidence confirmed that some representative NO-targeted cell cycle regulatory genes were also induced by H₂, but was impaired by the removal of endogenous NO. Genetic evidence suggested that in the presence of H₂, Arabidopsis mutants nia2 (in particular) and nia1 (two nitrate reductases (NR)-defective mutants) exhibited defects in lateral root length. Together, these results demonstrated that auxin-induced H₂ production was associated with lateral root formation, at least partially via a NR-dependent NO synthesis.
