Temporal variations and spatial distributions of heavy metals in a wastewater-irrigated soil-eggplant system and associated influencing factors

Research progress in the detection of trace heavy metal ions in food samples

Food safety is the basis for ensuring human survival and development. The threat of heavy metal ions to food safety has become a social concern with the rapid growth of the economy and the accompanying environmental pollution. Some heavy metal ions are highly toxic even at trace levels and pose significant health risks to humans. Therefore, ultrasensitive detection of heavy metal ions in food samples is important. In this mini-review, recent advances in the analytical methods based on nanomaterials for detecting trace heavy metal ions in food samples are summarized in three categories: electrochemical, colorimetric, and fluorescent methods. We present the features and sensing mechanisms of these three methods, along with typical examples to illustrate their application in the detection of heavy metal ions in foods. This mini-review ends with a discussion of current challenges and future prospects of these approaches for sensing heavy metal ions. The review will help readers understand the principles of these methods, thereby promoting the development of new analytical methods for the detection of heavy metal ions in food samples.

Responses of the gut microbiota to environmental heavy metal pollution in tree sparrow (Passer montanus) nestlings

Gut microbiota plays a critical role in regulating the health and adaptation of wildlife. However, our understanding of how exposure to environmental heavy metals influences the gut microbiota of wild birds, particularly during the vulnerable and sensitive nestling stage, remains limited. In order to investigate the relationship between heavy metals and the gut microbiota, we analyzed the characteristics of gut microbiota and heavy metals levels in tree sparrow nestlings at different ages (6, 9 and 12-day-old). The study was conducted in two distinct areas: Baiyin (BY), which is heavily contaminated with heavy metals, and Liujiaxia (LJX), a relatively unpolluted area. Our result reveled a decrease in gut microbiota diversity and increased inter-individual variation among nestlings in BY. However, we also observed an increase in the abundance of bacterial groups and an up-regulation of bacterial metabolic functions associated with resistance to heavy metals toxicity in BY. Furthermore, we identified a metal-associated shift in the relative abundance of microbial taxa in 12-day-old tree sparrow nestlings in BY, particularly involving Aeromonadaceae, Ruminococcaceae and Pseudomonadaceae. Moreover, a significant positive correlation was found between the body condition of tree sparrow nestlings and the abundance of Bifidobacteriaceae in BY. Collectively, our findings indicate that the gut microbiota of tree sparrow nestlings is susceptible to heavy metals during early development. However, the results also highlight the presence of adaptive responses that enable them to effectively cope with environmental heavy metal pollution.

Accumulation characteristics, driving factors, and model prediction of cadmium in soil-highland barley system on the Tibetan Plateau

Cadmium (Cd) poses major human health problems due to its high toxicity and organ bioaccumulation potential. This study collected and analysed 130 pairs of representative soil-highland barley samples on the Tibetan Plateau. The total soil Cd content (Cd-soil), available soil Cd (Cd-ava), and highland barley Cd contents (Cd-barley) ranged from 0.03 to 0.46 mg kg-1, 0.006-0.185 mg kg-1, and 0.57-13.62 μg kg-1, with mean values of 0.19 ± 0.01 mg kg-1, 0.045 ± 0.003 mg kg-1, and 4.57 ± 0.17 μg kg-1, respectively. Redundancy analysis (RDA) demonstrated that geographic factors and soil properties explained 28.46% of the variation in Cd-soil and Cd-ava, and precipitation (14.6%) and pH (9.1%) were the dominant factors. The structural equation model (SEM) indicated that Cd-soil and Cd-ava were predominantly controlled by pH. Furthermore, the Cd-soil, Cd-ava, and Cd-barley with significantly different environmental conditions were more accurately predicted by conditional inference trees-multiple linear regression (CITs-MLR). When Cd-soil is more than 0.376 mg kg-1, Cd-ava obtains the most accurate predictor (R2 =0.64, P < 0.01). This study provides new scientific insight into understanding the environmental biogeochemical nexus of Cd in the complex and fragile plateau environment and evaluating food security on the Tibetan Plateau under the self-sufficiency model of highland barley.

Effects of cadmium and lead co-exposure on glucocorticoid levels in rural residents of northwest China

Cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) are important environmental endocrine disruptors that are associated with adverse health problems. However, the effects of co-exposure to Cd and Pb on glucocorticoids (GCs) in the body at environmental levels are limited. A total of 468 subjects from the Dongdagou-Xinglong cohort (DDG-XL) were included in this study. We measured the serum levels of two representative endogenous GCs [cortisol (CRL) and cortisone (CRN)], and whole blood levels of Cd and Pb. Multiple linear regression models were constructed to explore the associations of single or combined Cd and Pb exposure with serum CRL and CRN levels. The interactive effects of Cd and Pb on GCs were further assessed using mediation analysis and moderation analysis. Single-heavy metal exposure analysis with adjustment for potential confounders showed that the serum CRL level decreased when the blood Cd or Pb concentration gradually increased (P trend <0.01). Additionally, subjects with high Cd or Pb exposure (Q4) had significantly reduced serum CRN levels compared to those with low Cd or Pb exposure (Q1) (P < 0.05). In Cd and Pb co-exposure analysis, significant negative dose-response relationships were observed between co-exposure to Cd and Pb and serum CRL and CRN levels. Furthermore, mediation analysis showed that Cd completely mediated the relationship between Pb and GCs, and moderation analysis suggested that Pb might weaken the negative relationship between Cd and GCs. These findings suggest that single or combined exposure to Cd and Pb interferes with the homeostasis of serum CRL and CRN levels. Furthermore, we innovatively propose that Cd and Pb may have interactive effects on GCs levels, and Pb can antagonize the negative relationship between Cd and GCs, which may provide clues for further studies on endocrine and metabolic disorders related to these heavy metals.

Enrichment and distribution characteristics of heavy metal(loid)s in native plants of abandoned farmlands in sewage irrigation area

Soil samples and native plants were collected from abandoned farmlands with a long history of sewage irrigation along Dongdagou stream, Baiyin City. We investigated the concentrations of heavy metal(loid)s (HMMs) in soil-plant system to evaluate the accumulation and transportation ability of HMMs in native plants. Results indicated that soils in study area were severely polluted by Cd, Pb, and As. With the exception of Cd, the correlation between total HMM concentrations in soil and plant tissues was poor. Among all investigated plants, no one was close to the criteria for the HMM concentrations of hyperaccumulators. The concentrations of HMMs in most plants were reached the phytotoxic level and the abandoned farmlands could not be used as forages, which showed that native plants may possess resistance capabilities or high tolerance for As, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn. The FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectrometer) results suggested that the detoxification of HMMs in plants may depend on the functional groups (-OH, C-H, C-O, and N-H) of some compounds. Bioaccumulation factor (BAF), bioconcentration factor (BCF), and biological transfer factor (BTF) were used to identify the accumulation and translocation characteristics of HMMs by native plants. S. glauca had the highest mean values of BTF for Cd (8.07) and Zn (4.75). C. virgata showed the highest mean BAFs for Cd (2.76) and Zn (9.43). P. harmala, A. tataricus, and A. anethifolia also presented high accumulation and translocation abilities for Cd and Zn. High HMMs (As, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn) accumulation in the aerial parts of plants may lead to increased accumulation of HMMs in the food chain; additional research is desperately required. This study demonstrated the HM enrichment characteristics of weeds and provided a basis for the management of abandoned farmlands.

Three-dimensional porous high boron-nitrogen-doped carbon for the ultrasensitive electrochemical detection of trace heavy metals in food samples

Exposure to even trace amounts of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in food can have serious effects on the human body. Therefore, the development of novel electrochemical sensors that can accurately detect the different toxicity levels of heavy metal ions in food is of great significance. Based on the principle of green chemistry, we propose a new type of boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon (BCN) material derived from a metal-organic framework material and study its synthesis, characterization, and heavy-metal ion detection ability. Under the optimum conditions, the BCN-modified glassy carbon electrode was studied using square-wave anodic stripping voltammetry, which showed good electrochemical responses to Cd(II) and Pb(II), with sensitivities as low as 0.459 and 0.509 μA/μM cm², respectively. The sensor was successfully used to detect Cd(II) and Pb(II) in Beta vulgaris var. cicla L samples, which is consistent with the results obtained using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. It also has a strong selectivity for complex samples. This study provides a novel approach for the detection of heavy metal ions in food and greatly expands the application of heteroatom-doped metal-free carbon materials in detection platforms.

Effects of lead and cadmium co-exposure on liver function in residents near a mining and smelting area in northwestern China

Chronic exposure to environmental cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) may have adverse effects on the human health. In this study, we aimed to determine the primary and interactive effects of Cd and Pb exposure on liver function in residents near a mining and smelting area in northwestern China. A total of 451 subjects were recruited, from which blood samples were collected to determine the levels of Cd, Pb, and liver function indices. Additionally, the association between the levels of exposure markers and liver function indices was analysed. Cd and Pb levels were significantly higher in subjects living in the polluted area than in those living in the non-polluted reference area. The liver function levels of subjects in the polluted area were poor compared with those in the reference area. In addition, Cd and Pb levels in the blood were positively associated with gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) levels and negatively associated with direct bilirubin (DBil) levels. Cd and Pb may be risk factors for abnormal liver function. The risk of abnormal liver function was higher in subjects with moderate Cd and Pb levels, high Cd levels, high Pb levels, and high Cd and Pb levels than in those with low Cd and Pb levels. Our data show that exposure to Cd and/or Pb can cause abnormal liver function. Cd and Pb may have an antagonistic effect on liver function, and high Cd exposure alone has a more profound effect on abnormal liver function compared with co-exposure to Pb and Cd.

Agro-environmental sustainability of using digestate fertilizer for solanaceous and leafy vegetables cultivation: Insights on fertilizer efficiency and risk assessment

Digestate generated from anaerobic digestion (AD) has been widely used as digestate fertilizer (DF) for plant growth, but its application should be comprehensively investigated. This study evaluates the effects of different amounts of DF on crop growth, nutrient use efficiency (NUE), soil properties, and potential negative impacts of DF application (salinity and heavy metals (HMs)) with two different crops (Eggplant and Shanghai cabbage). In eggplant cultivation, the yield increased with the increase of DF amount, and the yield of the DF-680 group was the highest (65.4 t/ha) under the highest fertilizer amount. However, due to high ammonia volatilization loss and excessive application, the NUE of DF was only about half of that of chemical fertilizer (CF). Significantly different from eggplant, the high application amount of DF resulted in yield reduction in Shanghai cabbage cultivation. The yield and NUE of the DF-170 group were the highest, the yield was 46.5 t/ha, and the NUE was more than twice compared to CF. Moreover, DF can raise soil nitrogen storage and alleviate soil acidification caused by fertilization in both batches of cultivation. Nevertheless, the electrical conductivity (EC) value of the soil was increased by 2-3 times, and the long-term application may lead to soil salinization. On the other hand, the increase of DF application elevated the content of copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and cadmium (Cd) in soil significantly but did not cause HMs contamination in crops and tillage soil. In summary, reasonable application amounts and methods should be considered when applying DF.

Integrating indices based on different chemical extractions and bioaccumulation in Bellamya aeruginosa to assess metal pollution and ecological risk in sediment

Various indices based on metal chemical data are used to evaluate pollution and ecological risk, but the consistency of the assessment results is usually unsatisfactory, and it is unclear if the ecological risk from sediment metals is accurately represented in in situ zoobenthos. Herein, the pollution and ecological risk associated with As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the sediments of two adjacent lakes (Datun (DT) and Changqiao (CQ)) were comprehensively evaluated by integrating metal concentrations, chemical forms and bioaccumulation in Bellamya aeruginosa (B. aeruginosa). The metal concentrations and chemical compositions varied widely in the sediments. Over 50% of the Cd, Pb and Zn in the sediments was present in bioavailable forms, followed by 28% of Cu and less than 25% of As, Cr and Ni. According to the enrichment factor (EF) and concentration enrichment ratio (CER) assessments, Cr and Ni were natural in origin, while the other metals were at minor to extremely high pollution levels, with average EFs of 1.5-77.6 and CERs of 1.1-113.4. The pollution levels for Cd, Cu and Pb from the EF and CER assessments were similar, while those for As and Zn were higher according to CER than EF (p = 0.05), likely due to the baseline underestimation associated with the potential diagenetic remobilization of bioavailable metals. The ecological risk index (Er), sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) and risk assessment code (RAC) showed a high eco-risk for Cd, while no similar risk was found for the other metals. By integrating risk indices with the chemical forms and pollution levels of metals, we deduced high eco-risks for As and Pb and moderate eco-risks for Cu and Zn in DT Lake and moderate eco-risks for As, Pb and Zn in CQ Lake. The other metals in the sediments of the two lakes presented low eco-risks. No significant positive correlations (p = 0.05) between metal accumulation in B. aeruginosa and the indices of pollution and eco-risk were observed except for the case of As, implying that measuring the metal concentrations in B. aeruginosa would not accurately characterize the metal pollution and ecological risk of sediments.

Concentration of potentially harmful elements (PHEs) in eggplant vegetable (Solanum melongena) irrigated with wastewater: a systematic review and meta-analysis and probabilistic health risk assessment

The main objectives of this study were PHEs concentration meta-analysis (Fe, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cu, Pb, and Cd) in eggplant irrigated by wastewater and the following estimation of non-carcinogenic (n-CR) risk for the consumers based on countries. According to the results, the rank order of PHEs concentration in eggplant was Fe (88.3 mg/kg -dry weight) > Zn (10.1 mg/kg -dry weight) > Pb (3.0 mg/kg -dry weight) > Ni (2.7 mg/kg -dry weight) > Cu (1.1 mg/kg -dry weight) > Cd (0.9 mg/kg -dry weight) > Cr (0.05 mg/kg -dry weight). Moreover, n-CR risk showed that all investigated countries (China, India, Pakistan, Turkey, and Jordan) except for United Arab Emirates (UAE) had a considerable n-CR in both age groups (adults and children).

Safety assessment and sustainability of consuming eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) grown in wastewater-contaminated agricultural soils

Vegetables cultivated on contaminated agricultural soils are being consumed by the public, and consequently cause serious health concerns due to contaminants' dietary intake. The current study examines the safety and sustainability of eating eggplant (Solanum melongena) by looking into the possibility of heavy metals translocation from polluted soils to the edible sections, as well as the health hazards that come with it. Soil and eggplant samples were taken from three contaminated and other three uncontaminated farms to estimate their chemical constituents and plant growth properties. Based on the pollution load index data, the contaminated soils were highly polluted with Fe, Cu, Pb, and Zn; and relatively polluted with Cr, Mn, Cd, Mn, Co, and V. Under contamination stress, the fresh biomass, dry biomass, and production of eggplant were significantly reduced by 41.2, 44.6, and 52.1%, respectively. Likewise, chlorophyll a and b were significantly reduced from 1.51 to 0.69 mg g⁻¹ and 1.36 to 0.64 mg g⁻¹, respectively. The uncontaminated plant shoots had the highest quantities of N, P, and proteins (1.98, 2.08, and 12.40%, respectively), while the roots of the same plants had the highest K content (44.70 mg kg⁻¹). Because eggplant maintained most tested heavy elements (excluding Zn and Pb) in the root, it is a good candidate for these metals' phytostabilization. However, it had the potential to translocate Mn and Zn to its shoot and Pb, Cr, Mn, and Zn to the edible fruits indicating its possibility to be a phytoextractor and accumulator of these metals. Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Mn, and Co quantity in the edible sections of eggplant grown in contaminated soils exceeded the permissible level for normal plants, posing health hazards to adults and children. For safety issues and food sustainability, our investigation strongly recommends avoiding, possibly, the cultivation of eggplant in contaminated agricultural lands due to their toxic effects even in the long run.

Multidimensional Scaling of the Mineral Nutrient Status and Health Risk Assessment of Commonly Consumed Fruity Vegetables Marketed in Kyrgyzstan

Intensive production of fruits and vegetables causes heavy metal accumulation. Consumption of this kind of foodstuff is a growing concern of the modern world with the additional distress of the supply of enough foodstuffs. To contribute to this global purpose, this research aimed to find out the mineral nutrient and heavy metal concentrations of commonly consumed fruity vegetables in Kyrgyzstan. Totally, ten different fruity type vegetables were collected from five different large bazaars of Kyrgyzstan. From these, 20 samples, including washed/unwashed rinds of vegetables, were quantified in terms of their B, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, and Zn contents by using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The concentrations of the fruity vegetables were found in the following range: B (1.392-25.816), Ca (92.814-4095.466), Cd (0.007-0.086), Cr (0.009-0.919), Cu (0.351-8.351), Fe (4.429-126.873), K (920.124-10,135.995), Mg (61.973-879.085), Mn (1.113-78.938), Na (36.132-266.475), Ni (0.039-1.215), Pb (0.081-2.906), and Zn (1.653-87.107) (mg kg^-1). It was determined that red capia pepper was the vegetable having the highest daily nutritional value according to evaluation done in our study. Taking into account of the HI values, all of the vegetables analyzed were determined to be lower than the limit value of 1 that falls into acceptable limits in terms of being safe. Peppers demonstrated the highest variation in terms of the elemental content. The high Cr content rendered hot pepper risky for consumption by both genders regarding with CR, and in terms of CR, it has been observed that nickel contents being found in vegetables including tomatoes pose a moderate risk for consumption. Quite lower risk was detected in red/Brandy-wine tomatoes, eggplants, and cucumber for both genders. As most striking result in our study, the Brandy-wine type tomato was found to be healthiest (as well as safest) and nutritious vegetable looking from the viewpoint of consumption in Kyrgyzstan.

Physiological and Gene Expression Responses of Six Annual Ryegrass Cultivars to Cobalt, Lead, and Nickel Stresses

Heavy metals negatively affect soil quality and crop growth. In this study, we compared the tolerance of six ryegrass cultivars to cobalt (Co²⁺), lead (Pb²⁺), and nickel (Ni²⁺) stresses by analyzing their physiological indexes and transcript levels of genes encoding metal transporters. Compared with the other cultivars, the cultivar Lm1 showed higher germination rates and better growth under Co²⁺, Pb²⁺, or Ni²⁺ treatments. After 48 h of Co²⁺ treatment, the total antioxidant capacity of all six ryegrass cultivars was significantly increased, especially that of Lm1. In contrast, under Pb²⁺ stress, total antioxidant capacity of five cultivars was significantly decreased, but that of Lm1 was unaffected at 24 h. Staining with Evans blue dye showed that the roots of Lm1 were less injured than were roots of the other five ryegrass cultivars by Co²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Ni²⁺. Lm1 translocated and accumulated lesser Co²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Ni²⁺ than other cultivars. In Lm1, genes encoding heavy metal transporters were differentially expressed between the shoots and roots in response to Co²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Ni²⁺. The aim of these researches could help find potential resource for phytoremediation of heavy metal contamination soil. The identified genes related to resistance will be useful targets for molecular breeding.

Multi-level methods to quantify risk assessment, source apportionment and identifying key risk areas of soil toxic elements in Ashi River watershed, China

With the advancement of small watershed governance in agricultural production process, soil toxic element pollution issue in watersheds constitutes a recent research hot spot. The Ashi River watershed is an agriculture-dominated small watershed which is exposed to toxic element sources, posing high risk of toxic element pollution to the planting areas. In this study, collection of soil samples was carried out along the periphery of the river network, and the soil physicochemical parameters and toxic elements (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, and Zn) were analyzed. The results showed that: (1) The geo-accumulation index (I_geo) and potential ecological risk index were used to evaluate the pollution degree, and the contents of As, Cd, and Zn in some sampling sites exceeded risk screening values. Moreover, soils closer to mining sources were found to be more polluted; (2) Redundancy analysis confirmed the contribution rate relationship between environmental factors and toxic elements. C/N ratio, total carbon (C), and total potassium (K) exhibited significant relationships with toxic elements (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05), respectively. Moreover, geographic locations (longitude, latitude, and elevation) showed significant impacts on toxic element contents (except for Cu); (3) The apportionment of toxic element pollution sources by using principal component analysis showed that Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd were mainly related to mining activities, while As was closely related to insecticide and herbicide, and Cr was mainly related to soil parent material and electroplating factory; (4) Through the integrated resistance base surface and toxic element sources combined with minimum cumulative resistance model, the toxic element risk areas were identified. The middle reaches corresponded to the extremely high risk zone, which undeniably requires the strengthening of the environmental management.

Improvement of sperm traits related to the high level of extra-pair fertilization in tree sparrow population under long-term environmental heavy metal pollution

Environmental stress can affect sperm traits whose changes have been reported to be associated with extra-pair fertilization (EPF) level in natural animal populations. However, little is known regarding how exposure to environmental heavy metals influences sperm traits and EPF level in free-living bird populations. In a previous study, we found that a tree sparrow (Passer montanus) population that has been exposed to heavy metal pollution over 60 years (Baiyin, BY) exhibits increased sperm quality compared with a population from a relatively unpolluted area (Liujiaxia, LJX). The high sperm quality could be related to extra-pair mating rates. Therefore, the present study investigated EPF level (the ratio of extra-pair offspring) in tree sparrow populations from BY and LJX, and analyzed the relationship between sperm traits (morphology, velocity and quantity) and EPF success. EPF success of tree sparrows was significantly correlated with their sperm velocity (p = 0.048) and total sperm length (p = 0.045), indicating that these sperm traits were important for EPF success. Tree sparrows from the BY population produced longer sperm with lower head/flagellum ratio and faster swimming sperm and showed a significantly higher EPF level than conspecifics from LJX. Thus, adaptive variation of sperm characteristics was related to the high EPF level in tree sparrows under long-term environmental heavy metal pollution. The findings are of scientific significance for exploring the evolution of mating tactics in wild bird populations under environmental stress.

In-situ stabilization of Cd by sepiolite co-applied with organic amendments in contaminated soils

Field experiments was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of sepiolite (S), sepiolite + fungi residues (SFR) and sepiolite + vermicompost (SVC) on in situ immobilization remediation of Cd contaminated soils. The results showed that treatments of S, SFR and SVC decreased soil Cd availability by 15.2-47.8%, 17.5-44.9% and 13.2-44.9%, respectively, when compared with the control groups. Moreover, the content of Cd in edible parts of Lactuca sativa L., Cichorium endivia L. and Brassica campestris L. was experienced a decrease of 15.9-41.9%, 1.6-38.0% and 29.0-37.4% reduction, respectively, under the amended soil. The improvement of soil fertility was obtained under addition of SVC and SFR, while the amounts of available P, K, organic matter, microbial carbon, microbial nitrogen and dehydrogenase activity were increased by 9.6-68.2%, 1.2-28.3%, 37.5-70.5%, 4.1-121.0%, 220-640% and 6.8-56.8%, respectively, in contrast to CK. Moreover, high-throughput sequencing analysis showed that the combined treated soils got higher values of alpha diversity indices, Chao1, ACE and Shannon. The number of dominant phyla (Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Crenarchaeota) and genera (Aquicella, Lysobacter, Candidatus Nitrososphaera, Sphingopyxis, Mesorhizobium) were enhanced. Therefore, the use of sepiolite and organic amendments could be an adequate strategy to immobilization remediation of Cd-contaminated soils.

Comprehensive assessment of heavy metal pollution and ecological risk in lake sediment by combining total concentration and chemical partitioning

Total concentration and chemical partitioning of heavy metals are commonly used in environmental quality assessment; however, their comparability and comprehensive application are far less discussed. Herein, bioavailability, pollution and eco-risk of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in surface sediments of Erhai Lake were evaluated referring to multiple indices following the experimental methods of complete digestion, optimized Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) and 1.0 M HCl extractions. Results of bioavailability for most metals were similar and comparable from BCR and HCl extractions. While bioavailable concentrations of Cd and Pb from HCl extraction were significantly (p < 0.01) lower than those from BCR extraction, indicating BCR extraction is more efficient. Results of enrichment factor (EF) and concentration enrichment ratio (CER) suggested that Cd was the highest polluted element followed by As, Pb and Zn, whereas Cr, Cu and Ni were mainly natural in origin. Similar concentrations of anthropogenic As from EF and CER assessments indicated anthropogenic As mainly existed in bioavailable form. However, anthropogenic Cd, Pb and Zn existed in both bioavailable and residue forms, resulting in the underestimation of anthropogenic metals by the CER assessment. The sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), potential ecological risk index (Er) and risk assessment code (RAC) showed inconsistent eco-risks for each of the metals except Cd. Combining pollution level and chemical partitioning with SQGs, Er and RAC assessments, high eco-risk of Cd, moderate eco-risk of As and Pb, and low eco-risk of Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn were graded. Our study highlights the limitation of single index and the necessity of integrating multiple indices following total concentration and chemical partitioning in metal pollution and eco-risk assessments.

Quantification and risk assessment of heavy metal build-up in soil-plant system after irrigation with untreated city wastewater in Vehari, Pakistan

In peri-urban areas of district Vehari, farmers are using untreated city wastewater for crop irrigation owing to the scarcity of good-quality irrigation water. This practice may pose severe environmental and health issues to local inhabitants attributed to the high levels of potentially toxic metals in wastewater. The present study evaluated the potential impacts of wastewater irrigation on metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Mn, Pb and Zn) build-up in the soil-plant continuum and associated health risks. In this study, wastewater (n = 17), soil (n = 108) and plant (n = 65) samples were collected from 15 peri-urban sites of three tehsils of district Vehari. Results showed that the mean concentration (mg/L) of Cd (0.02), Mn (0.25) and Fe (1.57) in wastewater samples was higher than their respective threshold values. Similarly, Cd, Mn and Fe concentration in soil was beyond the permissible limits of agricultural soil receiving wastewater irrigation. However, plants showed high accumulation of Pb, Cr and Fe than their respective limits depending on the vegetable/crop species. The health risk parameters showed that Pb and Cd are the major toxic chemical substances to human health, and the daily intake of crop plants can pose a potential health threat due to wastewater-irrigated crop consumption. Results highlighted the necessity of wastewater pretreatment to avoid the soil and vegetable contamination by wastewater irrigation and to reduce the associated health risks.

Assessment of heavy metal(loid)s contamination risk and grain nutritional quality in organic waste-amended soil

Studies that evaluate the human health risk of heavy metal(loid)s pollution have not been widely performed for organic waste-amended soils on the Loess Plateau of China. With this respect, we conducted a 3-year field trial to estimate the heavy metal(loid)s contamination of soil and maize, the resultant nutritional quality of maize grains and the health risk under treatments of conventional fertilizer (CF), traditional Chinese medicine residue (TCMR) and sheep manure (SM). We found that protein, amino acids and lysine in maize grains were increased by 12.3, 11.3 and 5.88 % under TCMR treatments relative to SM application, respectively. Meanwhile, this treatment reduced the levels of Cr, Pb, Cd, As and Hg in soil and maize grains. All fertilization regimens resulted in greater health risks for children, with HI values ranging from 1.06 to 1.52 and CR levels for Cr and As being ﹥1.0 × 10^-4, especially higher in SM treatments. This presented the beneficial effect of TCMR than SM. The further investigated of toxic metal(loid)s level in SM and its application risks, based on meta-analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, indicated Cd, Hg and Pb were the most cautionary heavy metal(loid)s and contamination risk were greater on the southwest regions of China.

Variation in genetic diversity of tree sparrow (Passer montanus) population in long-term environmental heavy metal polluted areas

Genetic diversity is the bedrock of evolution. The "Genetic Erosion" hypothesis posits that environmental pollution could cause reduced genetic diversity. To explore the effects of heavy metal pollution on genetic diversity in natural populations, we selected an area with more than sixty years of heavy metal contamination (Baiyin, BY) and a relatively unpolluted one (Liujiaxia, LJX), and tree sparrow (Passer montanus) as study models. Five tree sparrow populations were sampled in BY at sites differing in heavy metal pollution level. Lower genetic diversity based on seven microsatellite loci was observed in the five tree sparrow populations from BY compared with those from LJX. Analysis of molecular variance indicated no significant genetic differentiation between BY and LJX. However, the observed heterozygosity and allelic richness were negatively correlated to the lead and cadmium concentrations in the primary feathers of tree sparrow. Our results indicated the genetic diversity might have a negative response to long-term environmental heavy metal pollution in tree sparrow, supporting the "Genetic Erosion" hypothesis. Therefore, the findings shed lights on the possible effects of heavy metal pollution on genetic diversity of wild bird populations.

Spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of soil contamination with heavy metals during an intensive urbanization period (1989-2018) in southern China

This three-decade long study was conducted in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), a rapidly urbanizing region in southern China. Extensive soil samples for a diverse land uses were collected in 1989 (113), 2005 (1384), 2009 (521), and 2018 (421) for heavy metals of As, Cr, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn. Multiple pollution indices and Structural Equation Models (SEMs) were used in attribution analysis and comprehensive assessments. Data showed that majority of the sampling sites was contaminated by one or more heavy metals, but pollutant concentrations had not reached levels of concerns for food security or human health. There was an increasing trend in heavy metal contamination over time and the variations of soil contamination were site-, time- and pollutant-dependent. Areas with high concentrations of heavy metals overlapped with highly industrialized and populated areas in western part of the study region. A dozen SEMs path analyses were used to compare the relative influences of key environmental factors on soil contamination across space and time. The high or elevated soil contaminations by As, Cr, Ni, Cu and Zn were primarily affected by soil properties during the study period, except 1989-2005, followed by land use patterns. Parent materials had a significant effect on elevated soil contamination of Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb and overall soil pollution during 1989-2005. We hypothesized that other factors not considered in the present study, such as atmospheric deposition, sewage irrigation, and agrochemical uses, may be also important to explain the variability of soil contamination. This study implied that strategies to improve soil physiochemical properties and optimize landscape structures are viable methods to mitigate soil contamination. Future studies should monitor pollutant sources identified by this study to fully understand the causes of heavy metal contamination in rapidly industrialized regions in southern China.

Distribution and ecological risks of heavy metals in river sediments and overlying water in typical mining areas of China

The distribution and potential ecological risks of eight heavy metal elements including Cr, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, Pb, Hg, and W in the overlying water and sediments of the Taojiang River were investigated. The concentrations of eight heavy metals were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), and the distribution coefficients were exploited to estimate the partition coefficient between overlying water and sediment phases, which were subsequently used to establish the potential ecological risk of heavy metals in sediments. The results revealed that the contents of Pb (33.47 μg·L^-1), Cd (153.03 μg·L^-1) and Hg (1.12 μg·L^-1) in the water samples exceeded threshold values as proposed by the limits of the class III environmental quality standard. On the other hand, Cr, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb within sediments were below threshold limits.

Chemical speciation, pollution and ecological risk of toxic metals in readily washed off road dust in a megacity (Nanjing), China

Pollution of potentially toxic metals (PTMs) in road dust (RD) is becoming an important threat to the urban environmental quality and human health. The chemical speciation of PTMs is an important index charactering the risks, which may also closely relate to the pollution level and source but it was poorly understood. In this study, the chemical speciation of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn in the RD of a megacity (Nanjing), China was determined following an optimized BCR (proposed by the European Community Bureau of Reference) sequential extraction procedure to assess their pollution and potential eco-risk and to explore the variations of metal chemical speciation with the pollution levels and sources. Total concentrations of the PTMs in the RD were enriched 1.4- to 123-fold relative to the subsoil with median contamination factors (CF) of 6.7 (Pb), 6.0 (Cu), 5.5 (Cd), 4.0 (Zn), 2.0 (Cr) and 1.9 (Ni). Pollution of the PTMs should be mainly from industrial and traffic emissions and showed high CF values in the northern industrial zone. Whereas, the chemical percentages of each metal showed relatively narrow spatial variations and were not statistically correlated with the pollution levels (p = 0.05). Comparing of similar studies indicates that no regular patterns existed in chemical percentages for each metal in RD polluted by the traffic and/or both the industrial and traffic sources. In the RD of Nanjing, Pb was mostly associated with reducible phase, Cd and Zn were mainly present in acid-soluble phase, Cu was mostly concentrated in oxidizable phase, while Cr and Ni were predominantly present in residual phase. As the typical pollutants, anthropogenic Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn were mostly associated with the potential mobile phases but also with the residual phase in the RD of Nanjing, causing 1.4- to 3.0-fold increase in the mobility. Combining the assessments from eco-risk index, risk assessment code and sediment quality guidelines with the pollution levels and chemical speciation, we deduced that Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn may pose certain eco-risk upon transport into the aquatic system and soil, and Cd should be primarily concerned.

Distribution characteristics of heavy metals in surface soils from the western area of Nansi Lake, China

Surface soil samples collected from the western area of Nansi Lake, China, were analyzed for selected heavy metals including As, Cd, Pb, and Zn, to determine their spatial distributions and environmental effects. The average concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn in soil were 13.21 mg/kg, 0.20 mg/kg, 23.94 mg/kg, and 79.95 mg/kg, respectively. The concentration of As, Cd, and Zn was approximately 1.44-, 2.33-, and 1.25-fold higher than its background values in study area, respectively. Meanwhile, the concentrations of heavy metals progressively decreased from east to west within the study area, in a step-function distribution. The differences in the heavy metal distribution characteristics might be caused by the lake water irrigation and agricultural activities such as fertilizer and pesticide use. There were significant positive correlations between the values of OrgC, Al₂O₃, and Fe₂O₃ and concentrations of heavy metals. According to the Geo-accumulation index (I_geo) and the potential ecological risk index (PERI), Cd posed higher potential ecological risk in surface soil when compared with As, Pb, and Zn. These results could provide the scientific basis on which to evaluate the distribution of heavy metals under natural and anthropogenic influences in the surface soil near Nansi Lake, China.

Phytoremediation in flooded environments: Dynamics of barium absorption and translocation by Eleocharis acutangula

Macrophytes are widely used in water treatment and have potential for remediation of flooded soils. Many techniques have been proposed to increase the phytoextraction of metals by macrophytes, however, the knowledge of periods of maximum absorption and translocation is essential and is a gap in the management of phytoremediation. To evaluate the absorption and translocation of Ba over time by Eleocharis acutangula, a greenhouse experiment was conducted and the dry matter production of plants, Ba content in the roots and aerial parts, mass of Ba accumulated in plants, translocation factors and removal coefficients of Ba, and Ba content in two layers of the soil (0.0-0.1 m and 0.1-0.2 m) were determined. The highest translocation rates were observed after 105 days of cultivation, when the plants reached a state of hyperaccumulation. The maximum accumulation of barium occurred in the aerial parts of the plants at 105 days and in the roots at both 120 and 180 days. The barium content was reduced up to 120 days, as a result of an increase in available barium content in the soil layer of 0.0-0.1 m up to 105 days and in the layer 0.10-0.20 m up to 120 days, favoring the intense accumulation of Ba during this period. After 120 days of cultivation, the accumulation in the roots maintained a high coefficient of removal of Ba from the soil to the plant. After 180 days the available barium in the soil was depleted due to this high rate of removal by the roots.

Spatio-Temporal Change and Pollution Risk of Agricultural Soil Cadmium in a Rapidly Industrializing Area in the Yangtze Delta Region of China

The impacts of rapid industrialization on agricultural soil cadmium (Cd) accumulation and their potential risks have drawn major attention from the scientific community and decision-makers, due to the high toxicity of Cd to animals and humans. A total of 812 topsoil samples (0⁻20 cm) was collected from the southern parts of Jiangsu Province, China, in 2000 and 2015, respectively. Geostatistical ordinary kriging and conditional sequential Gaussian simulation were used to quantify the changes in spatial distributions and the potential risk of Cd pollution between the two sampling dates. Results showed that across the study area, the mean Cd concentrations increased from 0.110 mg/kg in 2000 to 0.196 mg/kg in 2015, representing an annual average increase of 5.73 μg/kg. Given a confidence level of 95%, areas with significantly-increased Cd covered approximately 12% of the study area. Areas with a potential risk of Cd pollution in 2000 only covered 0.009% of the study area, while this figure increased to 0.75% in 2015. In addition, the locally concentrating trend of soil Cd pollution risk was evident after 15 years. Although multiple factors contributed to this elevated Cd pollution risk, the primary reason can be attributed to the enhanced atmospheric deposition and industrial waste discharge resulting from rapid industrialization, and the quick increase of traffic and transportation associated with rapid urbanization.

The impact of seasonal varied human activity on characteristics and sources of heavy metals in metropolitan road dusts

Due to significant human activity, road dust is becoming contaminated by heavy metals in many cities. To comprehensively investigate the variation of contamination level and sources of heavy metals in road dust, 10 heavy metals in road dust samples from Beijing, China, in both summer and winter, were evaluated by spatial analysis using geographic information system (GIS) mapping technology and the positive matrix factorization (PMF) Model. Although the concentrations of some heavy metals between summer and winter had similarities, the differences of others and spatial distributions of heavy metals between summer and winter were considerable. The mean concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Fe were lower in winter, while those of Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were higher. According to the values of the Pollution Index (PI) and Nemerow Integrated Pollution Index (NIPI), there were no obvious differences between summer and winter, but the range between different sites in winter was nearly twice that of summer. Based on the PMF model, four sources of heavy metals in the dust samples were identified. Although the types of sources were consistent, the relative contributions of each source differed between summer and winter. Non-exhaust vehicle emissions was the most important source in summer (34.47 wt%), while fuel combustion contributed the largest proportion to the total heavy metals in winter (32.40 wt%). The impact of each source also showed spatial variation different trends in summer and winter. With the alteration of seasons, intensity of human activities also changed, such as the number of tourists, energy needs for building temperature regulation, construction, and the amount of pesticides and fertilizer. That might be the reason for the variation of heavy metal concentrations and relative contribution of their sources between summer and winter.

Promoting the productivity and quality of brinjal aligned with heavy metals immobilization in a wastewater irrigated heavy metal polluted soil with biochar and chitosan

Depleting aquifers, lack of planning and low socioeconomic status of Pakistani farmers have led them to use wastewater (WW) for irrigating their crops causing food contamination with heavy metals and ultimately negative effects on human health. This study evaluates the effects of chitosan (CH) and biochar (BC) on growth and nutritional quality of brinjal plant together with in situ immobilization of heavy metals in a soil polluted with heavy metals due to irrigation with wastewater (SPHIW) and further irrigated with the same WW. Both CH and BC were applied at three different rates i.e. low rate [(LR), BC0.5%, CH0.5% and BC0.25%+CH0.25%], medium rate [(MR), BC1%, CH1% and BC0.5%+CH0.5%] and high rate [(HR), BC1.5%, CH1.5% and BC0.75%+CH0.75%]. Result revealed that brinjal growth, antioxidant enzymes, and fruit nutritional quality significantly improved from LR to HR for each amendment, relative to control. However, these results were more prominent with BC alone and BC+CH, compared with CH alone at each rate. Similarly, with few exceptions, significant reduction in Ni, Cd, Co, Cr and Pb concentrations in the root, shoot and fruit were found in sole CH treatment both at LR and MR but in both CH and BC+CH treatments at HR, relative to control. Interestingly, the concentrations of Fe in the roots, shoots and fruit were more pronounced at BC treatments relative to CH and BC+CH treatments at each rate, compared to control. Overall, the BC+CH treatment at HR was the most effective treatment for in situ immobilization of heavy metals in SPHIW and further irrigated with the same WW, compared to rest of the treatments. This study indicates that BC0.75%+CH0.75% treatment can be used to reduce mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals in SPHIW and facilitates plant growth by improving the antioxidant system. However, the feasibility of BC0.75%+CH0.75% treatment should also be tested at the field scale.

Human Health Risk Assessment of Toxic Elements in Farmland Topsoil with Source Identification in Jilin Province, China

The presence of toxic elements in agricultural soils from anthropogenic activities is a potential threat to human health through the food chain. In this study, the concentration of toxic elements in 122 agricultural topsoil composite samples were determined in order to study the current status, identify their sources and assess the level of pollution and human health risk. The results showed that the mean concentrations of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd, Hg and As in the farmland topsoil were 21.72, 15.09, 36.08, 0.2451, 0.0378 and 4.957 mg·kg⁻¹, respectively. The spatial distribution showed that the soils were mainly contaminated by Cd, Pb and Hg in midwest Jilin but by Cu and As in the east. According to the pollution index (Pi), Nemerow integrated pollution index (PN) and Geo-Accumulation Index (I_geo), Cd and Pb were the main pollutants in the soils. The occurrence of these elements was caused by anthropogenic activities and they were concentrated in the Songyuan-Changchun-Siping economic belt. There is limited non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risk to humans. Principal component analyses suggest the Pb, Cd and Hg soil contamination was mainly derived from anthropogenic activities in the Midwest, but all examined toxic elements in the east were mainly due to geogenic anomalies and came from atmospheric deposition.
