Abstract
Oxytetracycline Hydrochloride (OTC), a common antibiotic used to treat specific illnesses in humans and animals, is characterized by poor absorption into cells, low volatility, and high hydrophilicity. It is a potent contaminant that poses a serious threat to the ecosystem, particularly the aquatic sources. Adsorption onto natural adsorbents is one of the most successful, economical, and ecologically friendly ways to remove antibiotics from waste water. The present work focuses on the adsorption of OTC utilizing alginate biochar beads (AlBCB) and biochar powder (BC) derived from bagasse. The influence of several factors were studies and optimized through batch studies employing BC and AlBCB. After 50 min BC displayed a removal of 97%, at an initial concentration of 10 ppm. The experimental data was discovered to follow PFO kinetics and fit with the Freundlich isotherm adsorption model. AlBCB, after a contact time of 40 min, indicated a maximum percentage removal of 86% for initial concentration of 10 ppm OTC. Al-biochar beads showed the maximum percentage removal at pH 10. 0.5 g of adsorbent was used to carry out all batch experiments at room temperature. The adsorption fitted Freundlich adsorption isotherm and intraparticle diffusion kinetics.

Abstract
Efficient elimination of Lead (Pb(ii)) from aqueous solutions has become a crucial area of focus in the wastewater treatment industry. In this study, novel mesoporous magnetic g-C3N4/Fe3O4/UiO-66-COOH was synthesized by combining the acid-functionalized metal-organic framework (MOF) of UiO-66-COOH via a facile novel solvothermal method with magnetic graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4/Fe3O4) sheets to enhance Pb(ii) adsorption in water. The study investigated various influential adsorption parameters, including pH, dosage, contact time, ion concentration, and temperature. The Langmuir model, which depicts monolayer adsorption on a uniform surface, was a more suitable fit for the adsorption isotherms. The kinetics conformed to the pseudo-second-order model, indicating a chemical adsorption mechanism. According to the Langmuir model, the adsorption capacity of g-C3N4/Fe3O4/UiO-66-COOH is expected to reach a maximum of 285.8 mg L-1. This value is 2.6 times higher than g-C3N4/Fe3O4 and 1.6 times higher than UiO-66-COOH. The enhanced adsorption capacity of g-C3N4/Fe3O4/UiO-66-COOH is attributed to its superior characteristics, such as abundant functional groups and high surface area which is 2.16 times higher than g-C3N4/Fe3O4. The adsorption thermodynamics indicated that the adsorption occurred spontaneously and was characterized as exothermic. g-C3N4/Fe3O4/UiO-66-COOH material exhibited good recyclability for up to five runs.

Abstract
A magnetic metal-organic framework MIL-68(Al) and a covalent organic framework were used as magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE) adsorbents in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography ultraviolet detection (HPLC-UV) to detect carbendazim (CBZ) and thiabendazole (TBZ). The main parameters affecting the extraction in the MSPE process were studied and optimized. Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al) coated with 1,3,5-tris(4-aminophenyl)benzene and terephthaldehyde (Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al)@TAPB-PDA-COF) was analyzed and verified. The material was proven to be suitable for adsorbing CBZ and TBZ. Various adsorption models were used to study its adsorption mechanism. The adsorption results were in good agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacities of Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al)@TAPB-PDA-COF over CBZ and TBZ were 54.24 and 67.87 mg g-1, respectively, and the equilibrium adsorption time was 200 min. Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al)@TAPB-PDA-COF with excellent recyclability showed higher adsorption capacity and selectivity. A method based on Fe3O4@MIL-68(Al)@TAPB-PDA-COF combined with HPLC-UV was established under the optimal extraction conditions and used to separate and detect trace imidazole drugs in Chinese herbal samples, achieving a low limit of detection (0.65-1.30 μg L-1) with excellent linear correlation (r > 0.999). The recovery rate and relative standard deviation were 86.05-99.78 % and 0.15-4.90 %, respectively. Therefore, the Fe3O4@MIL-68@TAPB-PDA-COF can be regarded as an effective adsorbent for the pretreatment of CBZ and TBZ drugs in Chinese herbal samples.

Abstract
The presence of pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater due to an increase in industrialization and urbanization is a serious health concern. The demand for diverse types of pharmaceutical compounds is expected to grow as there is continuous improvement in the global human health standards. Discharge of domestic pharmaceutical personal care products and hospital waste has aggravated the burden on wastewater management. Further, the pharmaceutical water is toxic not only to the aquatic organism but also to terrestrial animals coming in contact directly or indirectly. The pharmaceutical wastes can be removed by adsorption and/or degradation approach. Nanoparticles (NPs), such as 2D layers materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), and carbonaceous nanomaterials are proven to be more efficient for adsorption and/or degradation of pharmaceutical waste. In addition, inclusion of NPs to form various composites leads to improvement in the waste treatment efficacy to a greater extent. Overall, carbonaceous nanocomposites have advantage in the form of being produced from renewable resources and the nanocomposite material is biodegradable either completely or to a great extent. A comprehensive literature survey on the recent advancement of pharmaceutical wastewater is the focus of the present article.

Abstract
This work presented adsorption characteristics of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) on KOH-functionalized rice husk biochar pyrolyzed at 700 °C (KBC700) and evaluation on phytotoxicity of TCs-adsorbed aqueous phase to seed germination. Specifically, KBC700 gained eightfold rise in specific surface area by KOH activation. Predominant monolayer chemisorption helped KBC700 control TCs, and spontaneous and exothermic features were identified by thermodynamic studies. KBC700 could efficiently work in a wide pH range (4.5 ~ 9.5), as well as in simulated eutrophic water and co-existing cationic solution. Humic acid exerted negative impact on TCs disposal. Outstanding regeneration capability and stability were also found during adsorption-desorption cycles. Mechanism discussion implied predominant pore filling and π-π interaction accompanied by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction involved in TCs-removal process. Importantly, less phytotoxicity to seed germination was found in TCs-adsorbed aqueous phase. Collectively, these findings contribute to adsorption properties recognition and subsequent application for KOH-modified rice rusk biochar in environmental TCs remediation.

CHEMOSPHERE 2023; 338:139399. Abstract
In the present study, Ni-UiO-66 was synthesized to improve the adsorption efficiency of tetracycline (TC) in wastewater treatment. To this end, nickel doping was performed in the preparation process of UiO-66. The synthesized Ni-UiO-66 was characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS, BET, FTIR, TGA, and XPS for obtaining the lattice structure, surface topography, specific surface area, surface functional groups, and thermostability. More specifically, Ni-UiO-66 has a removal efficiency and adsorption capacity of up to 90% and 120 mg g-1, respectively, when used to treat TC. The presence of ions HCO3-, SO42-, NO3- and PO43- slightly affects the TC adsorption. A 20 mg L-1 humic acid reduces the removal efficiency from 80% to 60%. The performed analyses revealed that Ni-UiO-66 had similar adsorption capacity in wastewater with different ion strengths. The variation of adsorption capacity with the adsorption time was fitted using a pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. Meanwhile, it is found that the adsorption reaction occurs only on the monolayer of the UiO-66 surface so the adsorption process can be simulated using the Langmuir isotherm model. The thermodynamic analysis indicates that the adsorption of TC is an endothermic reaction. Electrostatic attraction, hydrogen-bond interaction, and π-π interaction might be the main reasons for the adsorption. The synthesized Ni-UiO-66 has well adsorption capacity and stable structure. Accordingly, it is expected to achieve a good prospect in industrial applications and wastewater treatment plants.

Abstract
A multifunctional cylindrical hybrid foam column, referred to as the chitosan/cyclodextrin/MIL-68(Al) (CS/CD/MIL-68(Al)) foam column, was prepared for the first time. The prepared foam column could be used for the adsorption/removal of hydrophilic and hydrophobic contaminants by different forms. Here, it was placed in hydrophilic dye solutions to investigate the adsorption behavior of methylene blue and trypan blue. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with R2 ranging from 0.9983 to 0.9998 for methylene blue and from 0.9993 to 1.0000 for trypan blue, and the adsorption process was consistent with the Langmuir isothermal model with R2 greater than 0.96. The RL values for methylene blue and trypan blue were 0.8871 and 0.5366, respectively, which were present between 0 and 1, indicating that the adsorption behaviors of the two dyes onto the CS/CD/MIL-68(Al) foam column were favorable. The maximum adsorption capacities (Qm) of methylene blue and trypan blue were 60.61 and 454.55 mg/g at 298 K, respectively. Also, the CS/CD/MIL-68(Al) foam column was spun into a syringe and used to adsorb trace hydrophobic sulfonamides from water in the form of filtration. The porous structure impeded the need for any external force and equipment, allowing the water sample to pass through the foam column smoothly. The conditions of the CS/CD/MIL-68(Al) foam column were optimized. The adsorption was carried out under the condition of pH = 4, the amount of the adsorbent was two foam columns, and no salt was added. It was found that the removal rate of the CS/CD/MIL-68(Al) foam column for six sulfonamides was 100%, and it could be reused at least five times. Therefore, this CS/CD/MIL-68(Al) foam column had a simple preparation method, offered a flexible and diverse form of use, was nonpolluting, biodegradable, and reusable, and could have a wider application in the field of environmental pollutant removal and adsorption.

Recent perspective of antibiotics remediation: A review of the principles, mechanisms, and chemistry controlling remediation from aqueous media. THE SCIENCE OF THE TOTAL ENVIRONMENT 2023; 881:163469. [PMID: 37061067 DOI: 10.1016/j.scitotenv.2023.163469] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 01/16/2023] [Revised: 04/08/2023] [Accepted: 04/08/2023] [Indexed: 06/01/2023]
Abstract
Antibiotic pollution is an ever-growing concern that affects the growth of plants and the well-being of animals and humans. Research on antibiotics remediation from aqueous media has grown over the years and previous reviews have highlighted recent advances in antibiotics remediation technologies, perspectives on antibiotics ecotoxicity, and the development of antibiotic-resistant genes. Nevertheless, the relationship between antibiotics solution chemistry, remediation technology, and the interactions between antibiotics and adsorbents at the molecular level is still elusive. Thus, this review summarizes recent literature on antibiotics remediation from aqueous media and the adsorption perspective. The review discusses the principles, mechanisms, and solution chemistry of antibiotics and how they affect remediation and the type of adsorbents used for antibiotic adsorption processes. The literature analysis revealed that: (i) Although antibiotics extraction and detection techniques have evolved from single-substrate-oriented to multi-substrates-oriented detection technologies, antibiotics pollution remains a great danger to the environment due to its trace level; (ii) Some of the most effective antibiotic remediation technologies are still at the laboratory scale. Thus, upscaling these technologies to field level will require funding, which brings in more constraints and doubts patterning to whether the technology will achieve the same performance as in the laboratory; and (iii) Adsorption technologies remain the most affordable for antibiotic remediation. However, the recent trends show more focus on developing high-end adsorbents which are expensive and sometimes less efficient compared to existing adsorbents. Thus, more research needs to focus on developing cheaper and less complex adsorbents from readily available raw materials. This review will be beneficial to stakeholders, researchers, and public health professionals for the efficient management of antibiotics for a refined decision.

Comprehensive insight into adsorption of chlortetracycline hydrochloride by room-temperature synthesized water-stable Zr-based metal-organic gel/sodium alginate beads. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2023:116339. Abstract
Chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) is one of the prevailing antibiotic pollutants that harm both environmental ecosystem and human health. Herein, Zr-based metal-organic gels (Zr-MOGs) with lower-coordinated active sites and hierarchically porous structures are fabricated via a facile straightforward room-temperature strategy for CTC treatment. More importantly, we incorporated the powder Zr-MOGs into low-cost sodium alginate (SA) matrix to achieve shaped Zr-based metal-organic gel/SA beads for enhancing the adsorption ability and ameliorating the recyclability. The Langmuir maximum adsorption capacities of Zr-MOGs and Zr-MOG/SA beads could reach 143.9 mg/g and 246.9 mg/g, respectively. What's more, in the manual syringe unit and continuous bead column experiments, Zr-MOG/SA beads could achieve an eluted CTC removal ratio as high as 93.6% and 95.5% in the real water sample, respectively. On top of that, the adsorption mechanisms were put forward as a combination of pore filling, electrostatic interaction, hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, coordination, π-π interaction as well as hydrogen bonding interaction. This study outlines a workable strategy for the facile preparation of candidate adsorbents for wastewater treatment.

Development and Evaluation of EDTA-Treated Rabbits for Bioavailability Study of Chelating Drugs Using Levofloxacin, Ciprofloxacin, Hemiacetal Ester Prodrugs, and Tetracycline. Pharmaceutics 2023; 15:1589. [PMID: 37376038 DOI: 10.3390/pharmaceutics15061589] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 04/26/2023] [Revised: 05/17/2023] [Accepted: 05/23/2023] [Indexed: 06/29/2023] Open
Abstract
Laboratory rabbits are fed foods rich with cationic metals, and while fasting cannot empty gastric contents because of their coprophagic habits. This implies that, in rabbits, the oral bioavailability of chelating drugs could be modulated by the slow gastric emptying rates and the interaction (chelation, adsorption) with gastric metals. In the present study, we tried to develop a rabbit model with low amounts of cationic metals in the stomach for preclinical oral bioavailability studies of chelating drugs. The elimination of gastric metals was achieved by preventing food intake and coprophagy and administering a low concentration of EDTA 2Na solution one day before experiments. Control rabbits were fasted but coprophagy was not prevented. The efficacy of rabbits treated with EDTA 2Na was evaluated by comparing the gastric contents, gastric metal contents and gastric pH between EDTA-treated and control rabbits. The treatment with more than 10 mL of 1 mg/mL EDTA 2Na solution decreased the amounts of gastric contents, cationic metals and gastric pH, without causing mucosal damage. The absolute oral bioavailabilities (mean values) of levofloxacin (LFX), ciprofloxacin (CFX) and tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), chelating antibiotics, were significantly higher in EDTA-treated rabbits than those in control rabbits as follows: 119.0 vs. 87.2%, 9.37 vs. 13.7%, and 4.90 vs. 2.59%, respectively. The oral bioavailabilities of these drugs were significantly decreased when Al(OH)3 was administered concomitantly in both control and EDTA-treated rabbits. In contrast, the absolute oral bioavailabilities of ethoxycarbonyl 1-ethyl hemiacetal ester (EHE) prodrugs of LFX and CFX (LFX-EHE, CFX-EHE), which are non-chelating prodrugs at least in in vitro condition, were comparable between control and EDTA-treated rabbits irrespective of the presence of Al(OH)3, although some variation was observed among rabbits. The oral bioavailabilities of LFX and CFX from their EHE prodrugs were comparable with LFX and CFX alone, respectively, even in the presence of Al(OH)3. In conclusion, LFX, CFX and TC exhibited higher oral bioavailabilities in EDTA-treated rabbits than in control rabbits, indicating that the oral bioavailabilities of these chelating drugs are reduced in untreated rabbits. In conclusion, EDTA-treated rabbits were found to exhibit low gastric contents including metals and low gastric pH, without causing mucosal damage. Ester prodrug of CFX was effective in preventing chelate formation with Al(OH)3 in vitro and in vivo, as well as in the case of ester prodrugs of LFX. EDTA-treated rabbits are expected to provide great advantages in preclinical oral bioavailability studies of various drugs and dosage formulations. However, a marked interspecies difference was still observed in the oral bioavailability of CFX and TC between EDTA-treated rabbits and humans, possibly due to the contribution of adsorptive interaction in rabbits. Further study is necessary to seek out the usefulness of the EDTA-treated rabbit with less gastric contents and metals as an experimental animal.

Novel ZIF-67-derived Co@CNTs nanocomposites as effective adsorbents for removal of tetracycline and sulfadiazine antibiotics. ENVIRONMENTAL RESEARCH 2023; 225:115516. Abstract
Tetracycline (TCC) and sulfadiazine (SDZ) are two of the most consumed antibiotics for human therapies and bacterial infection treatments in aquafarming fields, but their accumulative residues can result in negative effects on water and aquatic microorganisms. Removal techniques are therefore required to purify water before use. Herein, we concentrate on adsorptive removal of TCC and SDZ using cobalt@carbon nanotubes (Co@CNTs) derived from Co-ZIF-67. The presence of CNTs on the edge of nanocomposites was observed. Taguchi orthogonal array was designed with four variables including initial concentration (5-20 mg L-1), dosage (0.05-0.2 g L-1), time (60-240 min), and pH (2-10). Concentration and pH were found to be main contributors to adsorption of tetracycline and sulfadiazine, respectively. The optimum condition was found at concentration 5 mg L-1, dosage 0.2 g L-1, contact time 240 min, and pH 7 for both TCC and SDZ removals. Confirmation tests showed that Co@CNTs-700 removed 99.6% of TCC and 97.3% of SDZ with small errors (3-5.5%). Moreover, the kinetic and isotherm were studied, which kinetic and isotherm data were best fitted with pseudo second-order model and Langmuir. Maximum adsorption capacity values for TCC and SDZ were determined at 118.4-174.1 mg g-1 for 180 min. We also proposed the main role of interactions such as hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and electrostatic attraction in the adsorption of antibiotics. With high adsorption performance, Co@CNTs-700 is expected to remove antibiotics efficiently from wastewater.

Abstract
Nowadays, a big challenge is developing a sustainable and effective method for removing contaminants like dyes from aqueous solutions. In this regard, Zr-based metal-organic framework (UiO-66-NH2) and sawdust as the ideal adsorbents were used. Due to their low separation in adsorption processes, embedding into alginate and obtaining composite beads are suggested as a suitable strategy. The achieved Ca-alginate/citric acid (CA)-sawdust/UiO-66-NH2 hydrogel beads were used to compare cationic and anionic dyes removal. This sorbent indicated an excellent selectivity for removing methylene blue versus methyl orange in a binary system. pH = 6, adsorbent amount = 80 mg, methylene blue concentration = 10 mg/L, and contact time = 420 min were achieved as optimal parameters on methylene blue adsorption with an adsorption capacity of about 26 mg/g. The removal process of methylene blue followed linear Freundlich isotherm and nonlinear pseudo-2nd-order kinetic models. The regeneration test demonstrated methylene blue removal efficiency higher than about 89 % after 9 cycles. According to the outcomes, methylene blue could be attached to the adsorbent surface through the electrostatic, hydrogen bonding, and π-π interactions of the aromatic rings. These results confirm the potential of Ca-alginate/CA-sawdust/UiO-66-NH2 hydrogel beads as a selective bio-sorbent for cationic dye removal.

Abstract
The contamination of the aquatic environment with emerging micro-pollutants is a serious global concern. The aim of this investigation was to synthesize novel functionalized material (BNAPTES) precursor to natural bentonite in a single pot facile synthetic route. The material was utilized for efficient and selective removal of tetracycline (TC) and triclosan (TCS) in aqueous wastes. The grafting of silane was confirmed with the FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red) analysis and the EDX (Energy Dispersive X-ray) analysis showed the incorporation of amino group with the bentonite. The structural changes of clay due to silane grafting were studied with the help of XRD (X-ray Diffraction) and BET (Brunner-Emmett-Teller) surface area analyses. Batch adsorption studies showed that functionalized clay significantly increased the selectivity and adsorption capacity of bentonite for TC and TCS. The Langmuir monolayer adsorption capacity was found to be 15.36 and 17.15 mg/g for TC and TCS, respectively. The rapid uptake of TC and TCS by functionalized material followed pseudo-second-rate kinetics. Further, a total of 78% of TC and 73% of TCS were removed within 5 min of contact and the adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 120 min. The influence of background electrolytes and co-existing ions indicated that TC and TCS were selective towards BNAPTES. The loading capacities of the column packed with BNAPTES were found to be 56.00 and 44.42 mg/g for TC and TCS, respectively. Further, BNAPTES was found efficient even in real water treatment since the attenuation of TC and TCS was not affected significantly in the real water matrix.

Abstract
In this study, a series of Al-doped metal-organic frameworks (AlxZr(1-x)-UiO-66) were synthesized through a one-step solvothermal method. Various characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 sorption measurement, suggested that the Al doping was uniform and barely influenced the crystallinity, chemical stability, and thermal stability of the materials. Two cationic dyes, safranine T (ST) and methylene blue (MB), were selected for investigating the adsorption performances of Al-doped UiO-66 materials. Al0.3Zr0.7-UiO-66 exhibited 9.63 and 5.54 times higher adsorption capacities than UiO-66, 498 mg/g and 251 mg/g for ST and MB, respectively. The improved adsorption performance can be attributed to π-π interaction, hydrogen bond, and the coordination between the dye and Al-doped MOF. The pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models explained the adsorption process well, which indicated that the dye adsorption on Al0.3Zr0.7-UiO-66 mostly occurred through chemisorption on homogeneous surfaces. A thermodynamic study indicated the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption capacity did not decrease significantly after four cycles.

Abstract
This study explores adsorptive removal measures to shed light on current water treatment innovations for kinetic/isotherm models and their applications to antibiotic pollutants using a broad range of biomass-based adsorbents. The structure, classifications, sources, distribution, and different techniques for the remediation of antibiotics are discussed. Unlike previous studies, a wide range of adsorbents are covered and adsorption of comprehensive classes of antibiotics onto biomass/biochar-based adsorbents are categorized as β-lactam, fluoroquinolone, sulfonamide, tetracycline, macrolides, chloramphenicol, antiseptic additives, glycosamides, reductase inhibitors, and multiple antibiotic systems. This allows for an assessment of their performance and an understanding of current research breakthroughs in applying various adsorbent materials for antibiotic removal. Distinct from other studies in the field, the theoretical basis of different isotherm and kinetics models and the corresponding experimental insights into their applications to antibiotics are discussed extensively, thereby identifying the associated strengths, limitations, and efficacy of kinetics and isotherms for describing the performances of the adsorbents. In addition, we explore the regeneration of adsorbents and the potential applications of the adsorbents in engineering. Lastly, scholars will be able to grasp the present resources employed and the future necessities for antibiotic wastewater remediation.

Abstract
Photocatalytic degradation, as a very significant advanced oxidation technology in the field of environmental purification, has attracted extensive attention in recent years. The design and synthesis of catalysts with high-intensity photocatalytic properties have been the focus of many researchers in recent years. In this contribution, two new supramolecular materials {[(L1)·(Ag4I7)]CH3CN} (1), {[(L2)·(Ag4I7)]CH3CN} (2) were synthesized by solution volatilization reaction of two cationic templates 1,3,5-Tris(4-aminopyridinylmethyl)-2,4,6-Trimethylphenyl bromide (L1) and 1,3,5-Tris(4-methyl pyridinyl methyl)-2,4,6-trimethylphenyl bromide (L2) with metal salt AgI at room temperature, respectively. The degradation effect of 1 and 2 as catalyst on tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation was studied. The results showed that the degradation of TC by 1 was better than that by 2 and both of them had good stability and cyclability. The effects of pH value, catalyst dosage, and anion in water on the photocatalytic performance were also investigated. The adsorption kinetics fit the quasi-first-order model best. After 180 min of irradiation with 1, the degradation rate of TC can reach 97.91%. In addition, the trapping experiments showed that ·OH was the main active substance in the photocatalytic degradation of TC compared with ·O2− and h+. Because of its simple synthesis and high removal efficiency, catalyst 1 has potential value for the treatment of wastewater containing organic matter.

Abstract
A new electrochemical sensor for the detection of levofloxacin (LV) was efficiently realized. The aim was to develop a new, cheap, and simple sensor for the detection of LV, which is used in various infections due to its pharmacological importance. It consists of carbon paste (CP) enhanced with nano-sized fumed silica (NFS). NFS has a very low bulk density and a large surface area. The carbon paste-enhanced NFS electrode (NFS/CPE) showed great electrocatalytic activity in the oxidation of 1.0 mM LV in Britton–Robinson buffer (BR) at pH values ranging from 3.0 to 8.0. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) were used; the peak current value (Ip) of the NFS/CPE sensor was 2.7 times that of the bare electrode, ensuring its high electrocatalytic activity. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was performed at a peak potential (Ep) of +1066 mV, yielding a resistance of 10 kΩ for the designed NFS/CPE sensor compared to 2461 kΩ for the bare electrode, indicating the high conductivity of the modified sensor and verifying the data observed using the CV technique. Surface descriptions were determined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX). The variation in the concentration of LV (2.0 to 1000 µM) was considered in BR buffer (pH = 5.0) at a scan rate (SR) of 10 mV/s by the NFS/CPE. The detection and quantification limits were 0.09 µM and 0.30 µM, respectively. To evaluate the application of LV in real samples, this procedure was established on Quinostarmax 500 mg tablets and human plasma samples. Reasonable results were obtained for the detection of LV.

Abstract
Significant concerns have been raised regarding to the pollution of antibiotics in recent years due to the abuse of antibiotics and their high detection rate in water. Herein, a novel super adsorbent, boronic acid-modified bacterial cellulose microspheres with a size of 415 μm in diameter was prepared through a facile water-in-oil emulsion method. The adsorbent was characterized by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analyses to confirm its properties. The microspheres were applied as packing materials for the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) from an aqueous solution and hoggery sewer via the reversible covalent interaction between cis-diol groups in TC molecules and the boronic acid ligand. TC adsorption performance had been systemically investigated under various conditions, including the pH, temperature, TC concentration, contact time, and ionic strength. Results showed that the adsorption met pseudo-second-order, Elovich kinetic model and Sips, Redlich-Peterson isothermal models. And the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic, with the maximum TC adsorption capacity of 614.2 mg/g. After 18 adsorption-desorption cycles, the adsorption capacity remained as high as 84.5% compared with their original adsorption capacity. Compared with other reported adsorption materials, the microspheres had high adsorption capacity, a simple preparation process, and excellent recovery performance, demonstrating great potential in application on TC removal for water purification and providing new insights into the antibiotic's adsorption behavior of bacterial cellulose-based microspheres.

Abstract
This study constructed a FeS-based Fenton-like process to explore the degradation of TTC in the presence of copper ions. The acidic condition of pH 3 was more favorable to the H2O2 decomposition and TTC degradation, and it was slightly enhanced by Cu(II). The production of •OH from H2O2 was revealed through radical scavenging and benzoic acid probe experiments, and the ratio of H2O2 decomposition to •OH production was about 1-1.5, which is comparatively consistent with the theoretical ratio. FeS-based Fenton process was proved to be a homogenous system, the slow release of Fe(II) source and the autocatalytic cycle of Fe(III) to Fe(II) resulting from the reductive species of TTC and dissolved S(-II) improved the production of •OH and the degradation of TTC, which was proved by comparing TTC degradation, TOC removal, H2O2 decomposition and Fe(II) concentration with different iron sources (FeS, Fe(II) and Fe(III)) and external addition of dissolved S(-II). The possible degradation pathways of TTC were subsequently inferred according to the detected products by LC-MS. Understanding these autocatalytic processes is essential to reveal the transformation of redox-active substances in environments and may have potential significance in applying FeS-based Fenton-like process for the treatment of wastewater containing reductive organic matters.

Abstract
The rational design of carbon-based adsorbents with a high uptake efficiency for polar organic molecules is a key challenge in water purification research. Herein, we report a graphene aerogel that is doped with pyridinic-N and has abundant ring defects (denoted by DNGA). The aerogel sample exhibits a high adsorption capacity of 607.1 mg/g toward tetracycline (TC), a fast adsorption process (20 min), and good reusability (with a declining efficiency < 10.0% after five cycles), while being easy to recycle. C/N K-edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) measurements demonstrate that the efficient adsorption capacity of the DNGA sample is related to the presence of ring defects and the pyridinic-N species. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that ring defects of type 5-8-5 and the pyridinic-N species at the edge location are primarily responsible for TC removal. In this study, we resolve a controversial issue regarding the origin of the adsorption performance origin of N-doped carbon-based adsorbents. The findings of this study can guide the development of novel and improved N-doped carbon-based adsorbents for the removal of target contaminants.

Abstract
To date, there is still very little knowledge about the combined effects of typical inorganic ligands and solution pH values on mobility characteristics of tetracycline (TC) through saturated aquifer media. In this work, three typical inorganic ligands (i.e., phosphate, silicate, and iodate) were employed in the transport experiments. Generally, all the ligands promoted TC mobility over the pH range of 5.0-9.0 owing to the enhanced electrostatic repulsion between sand grains and TC anionic forms (i.e., TC- and TC2-) as well as the competitive deposition between ligands and antibiotic molecules for attachment sites. Furthermore, the transport-enhancement effects of ligands on TC intensively depended on ligand type and followed the sequence of phosphate > silicate > iodate. This phenomenon was ascribed to their different molecular sizes and binding abilities to sand grains. Interestingly, the differences in extents of enhanced effects of various inorganic ligands on TC transport varied with background solution pH due to pH-induced different extents of deposition site competition effects. Moreover, the two-site nonequilibrium model (which accounts for an equilibrium site and a kinetic site) as well as adsorption and kinetic studies were performed to help interpret the controlling mechanisms for the synergistic effects of inorganic ligands and solution pH on TC transport in saturated quartz sand. The findings of our study clearly demonstrate that inorganic ligands may be critical factors in assessing the fate and transport of antibiotics in groundwater systems.

Abstract
This study describes for the first time the synthesis, characterization, and application of a MnFe2O3/GO core-shell nanocomposite as an adsorbent for the removal of levofloxacin (Lev) from real water samples. The formation of the proposed nanocomposite was confirmed using various characterization techniques. The structural techniques revealed a 20 nm average particle size of the MnFe2O3/GO core-shell nanocomposite, with a surface area of 70.7 m2 g-1, as shown by the BET results. The most influential parameters (adsorbent dosage, stirring rate, and Lev pH) that affected the adsorption process were optimized using the response surface methodology (RSM) based on a central composite design. The optimum conditions were 0.007 g, 2, and 7 for adsorbent dosage, stirring rate, and Lev pH, respectively. The adsorption behavior of Lev on the MnFe2O3/GO core-shell nanocomposite was examined using isotherm models, kinetics, and thermodynamics. The kinetic models demonstrated that the adsorption process was controlled by both intraparticle and outer diffusion. Furthermore, the results obtained revealed that the adsorption of Lev on MnFe2O3/GO was dominated by electrostatic interactions. Moreover, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin isotherms confirmed that the sorption mechanism was dominated by electrostatic interactions, while Langmuir and Sips models confirmed a monolayer adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity of Lev onto the MnFe2O3/GO adsorbent was found to be 129.9 mg g-1. Furthermore, the thermodynamic data revealed that the adsorption system was spontaneous and exothermic. The synthesized MnFe2O3/GO core-shell nanocomposite showed significant recyclability and regenerability properties up to five adsorption-desorption cycles. As a proof of concept, the performance of the prepared adsorbent was evaluated for laboratory-scale purification of spiked real water samples. The prepared adsorbent significantly reduced the concentration of Lev in the real water samples and the removal efficiency ranged from 86 to 97%.

Abstract
As a broad-spectrum antibiotic, tetracycline has become a potential ecological hazard. Herein, titanium nitride (TiN), with an advantageous structure, was synthesized by simple heating rate regulation and constructed for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation under light irradiation. All the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-adsorption/desorption isotherm, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectometry (DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results showed that the as-prepared TiN-x catalysts exhibited obviously enhanced photocatalytic property toward TC-HCl degradation compared with the commercial pure phase TiN (p-TiN). According to the results of photocatalytic degradation, TiN synthesized at 6 °C/min heating rate had the best removal rate of TC-HCl (90%) after dark reaction for 10 min and photo-degradation for 90 min. In addition, the trapping experiments have demonstrated that the photogenerated holes (h+) and superoxide radical ([Formula: see text]) are the main oxidation products of the present system. Strikingly, the reuse experiments showed high stability of TiN.

Abstract
There is an increasing level of various pollutants and their persistence in aquatic environments. The improper use of antibiotics and their inefficient metabolism in organisms result in their release into aquatic environments. Antibiotic abuse has led to hazardous effects on human health. Thereby, efficient removal of pharmaceuticals, particularly antibiotics, from wastewater and contaminated water bodies is greatly interested in international research communities. Metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, as a hybrid group of material containing metallic center and organic linkers, offer a porous structure that is highly efficient for removing different pollutants from contaminated water and wastewater streams. This article aims to review the recent advancement in using MOF-based adsorbents and catalysts for the removal of pharmaceuticals, especially antibiotics, from polluted water. Applying MOFs-based structures for removing antibiotics using photocatalytic removal and adsorptive removal techniques will be discussed and evaluated in this review paper. Various MOF-based materials such as functionalized MOFs, MOF-based composites, magnetic MOF-based composites, MOFs templated-metal oxide catalysts for removing pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and antibiotics from contaminated aqueous media are discussed. Furthermore, effective operational parameters on the adsorption, adsorption mechanisms, adsorption isotherms, and thermodynamic parameters are explained and discussed. Finally, in the concluding remarks, the challenges and future outlooks of using MOFs-based adsorbents and catalysts for removing antibiotics are summarized.

Abstract
Currently, a serious threat for living organisms and human life in particular, is water contamination with persistent organic and inorganic pollutants. To date, several techniques have been adopted to remove/treat organics and toxic contaminants. Adsorption is one of the most effective and economical methods for this purpose. Generally, porous materials are considered as appropriate adsorbents for water purification. Conventional adsorbents such as activated carbons have a limited possibility of surface modification (texture and functionality), and their adsorption capacity is difficult to control. Therefore, despite the significant progress achieved in the development of the systems for water remediation, there is still a need for novel adsorptive materials with tunable functional characteristics. This review addresses the new trends in the development of new adsorbent materials. Herein, modern carbon-based materials, such as graphene, oxidized carbon, carbon nanotubes, biomass-derived carbonaceous matrices-biochars as well as their composites with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and MOF-derived highly-ordered carbons are considered as advanced adsorbents for removal of hazardous organics from drinking water, process water, and leachate. The review is focused on the preparation and modification of these next-generation carbon-based adsorbents and analysis of their adsorption performance including possible adsorption mechanisms. Simultaneously, some weak points of modern carbon-based adsorbents are analyzed as well as the routes to conquer them. For instance, for removal of large quantities of pollutants, the combination of adsorption and other methods, like sedimentation may be recommended. A number of efficient strategies for further enhancing the adsorption performance of the carbon-based adsorbents, in particular, integrating approaches and further rational functionalization, including composing these adsorbents (of two or even three types) can be recommended. The cost reduction and efficient regeneration must also be in the focus of future research endeavors. The targeted optimization of the discussed carbon-based adsorbents associated with detailed studies of the adsorption process, especially, for multicomponent adsorbate solution, will pave a bright avenue for efficient water remediation.

Abstract
Antibiotic drugs have become dominating organic pollutants in water resources, and efficient removal of antibiotic drugs is the priority task to protect the water environment. Cu3P/SnO2 photocatalysts of various Cu3P loadings (10-40 wt% Cu3P) were synthesized using a combination of hydrothermal synthesis and a partial annealing method. Their photocatalytic activity was tested for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC-HCl) degradation under visible light irradiation. Cu3P/SnO2 samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2-adsorption, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The results showed that the p-n type heterostructure between Cu3P and SnO2 was successfully constructed, and addition of Cu3P to SnO2 could improve its photocatalytic activity at an optimized loading of 30 wt% Cu3P. In photocatalytic degradation studies, removal rates of around 80% were found in 30 minutes of dark reaction and 140 min of photodegradation. The removal rate was superior to that of Cu3P and SnO2 alone under the same experimental conditions. According to trapping experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements, photogenerated holes (h+) and superoxide radicals ˙O2 - were considered as the main oxidation species in the present system. Finally, the reuse experiments showed high stability of Cu3P/SnO2. This study reports Cu3P as a cocatalyst combined with semiconductor SnO2 to form a highly efficient heterogeneous photocatalyst for the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride for the first time.

Abstract
Three novel (Fe-Eu) JLUE-MOGs were successfully fabricated through a solvothermal method and employed to construct the double-effect system for antibiotics adsorption and detection. The characterizations highlighted the properties of ample active sites, large surface areas and hierarchical porous structures, which did contribute to superb and rapid chlortetracycline hydrochloride (CTC) adsorption by JLUE-MOGs. Besides, the effects of initial pH values, JLUE-MOG dosages and co-existing inorganic ions on the CTC adsorption could be explained by pore filling, π-π EDA interaction, electrostatic interaction, water affinity as well as hydrogen bonding. Moreover, the optimized condition was cross-explored by response surface methodology (RSM) with tiny differences compared to actual experiments. In addition, fluorescent JLUE-MOG-7 was implemented for sensitive recognition of CTC and reflecting adsorption processes. Furthermore, shaping JLUE-MOG-7@cellulose aerogels were fabricated as filter materials for applying into an adsorption bed. The breakthrough process was fitted well by Bohart-Adams model and Thomas model, along with recognizable fluorescence changes of immobilized adsorbents. This work develops efficient and luminescent powder-like JLUE-MOGs for antibiotics adsorptive enrichment and sensitive detection. More importantly, immobilized JLUE-MOG@cellulose aerogels, as promising and alternative adsorbents with real-time fluorescence changes, can be utilized for continuously pollutants removal in real wastewater treatment.

Controlling the Structural Robustness of Zirconium-Based Metal Organic Frameworks for Efficient Adsorption on Tetracycline Antibiotics. WATER 2021. Abstract
Tetracyclines (TCs) are the most widely used antibiotics for the prevention and treatment of livestock diseases, but they are toxic to humans and have frequently been detected in water bodies. In this study, the physical and chemical properties of the zirconium-based metal organic framework (MOF) UiO-66 and its NH2-functionalized congener UiO-66-NH2 were investigated along with batch TC adsorption tests to determine the effect of functionalization on TC removal. TC removal was highest at pH 3 and decreased with increasing pH. Pseudo-1st and pseudo-2nd-order kinetic models were used to study the adsorption equilibrium times, and Langmuir isotherm model was found to be more suitable than Freundlich model. The maximum uptake for UiO-66 and UIO-66-NH2 was measured to be 93.6 and 76.5 mg/g, respectively. Unexpectedly, the TC adsorption capacity of UiO-66-NH2 was observed to be lower than that of UiO-66. Density functional theory calculations revealed that the pore structures are irrelevant to TC adsorption, and that the –NH2 functional group could weaken the structural robustness of UiO-66-NH2, causing a reduction in TC adsorption capacity. Accordingly, robust MOFs with zirconium-based metal clusters can be effectively applied for the treatment of antibiotics such as TC in water.

Abstract
In China, more than 3.5 million tons of Camellia oleifera discarded shells are produced every year. This work first prepared phosphorus-containing biochar (PBC) from C. oleifera shells and was successfully applied to the efficient removal of tetracycline (TC) from solutions. The prepared PBC exhibits superior TC adsorption capacity of 451.5 mg/g, and TC uptake rapidly reached 315.5 mg/g at the first 5 min (C0 = 50 mg/L). Furthermore, PBC also shows excellent applicability to the broad range pH value (1-9) and superior selective removal in the presence of various high concentration coexisting ions (1 mM). Mechanisms underlying TC adsorption were also put forward, and analysis suggested that pyrophosphate-like surface functional groups (C-O-P bond) played a critical role in this process. Notably, treating pharmaceutical wastewater with PBC can efficiently reduce chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total organic carbon (TOC) concentration below the discharge standard of China (GB21904-2008).

Abstract
Tetracyclines (TCs) are a group of broad-spectrum antibiotics having vast human, veterinary, and aquaculture applications. The continuous release of TCs residues into the environment and the inadequate removal through the conventional treatment systems result in its prevalent occurrence in soil, surface water, groundwater, and even in drinking water. As aqueous TCs contamination is the tip of the iceberg, and TCs possess good sorption capacity towards soil, sediments, sludge, and manure, it is insufficient to rely on the sorptive removal in the conventional water treatment plants. The severity of the TCs contamination is evident from the emergence of TCs resistance in a wide variety of microorganisms. This paper reviews the recent research on the TCs occurrence in the environmental matrices, fate in natural systems, toxic effects, and the removal methods. The high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) determination of TCs in environmental samples and the associated technology developments are analyzed. The benefits and limitations of biochemical and physicochemical removal processes are also discussed. This work draws attention to the inevitability of proper TC sludge management. This paper also gives insight into the limitations of TCs related research and the future scope of research in environmental contamination by TCs residues.

Abstract
In this study, batch and column tests were performed to investigate the co-transport of graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles and tetracycline in saturated porous media under various solution chemistry conditions. Research indicated that GO and tetracycline had mutual promotion effect on their transport in the porous media under all the tested conditions, which was ascribed to the high adsorption capacity of tetracycline onto GO and the increased electrostatic repulsion as well as their competition for deposition sites on sand surfaces. Interestingly, the mutually promoting function of GO and tetracycline under acidic conditions was greater than that under alkaline conditions, the dominant mechanism was that the increased solution pH decreased the sorption of tetracycline onto GO and weakened the deposition site competition. Furthermore, the mutually promoting effect of GO and tetracycline was Na+ or Ca2+ concentration-dependent. Specially, increased Ca2+ concentration weakened the promoting effect of GO on tetracycline transport but magnified the promoting effect of tetracycline on GO transport. This is because higher Ca2+ concentration could cause a decrease in the adsorption of tetracycline on GO and facilitate more tetracycline molecules to occupy the deposition sites on sand surfaces. Additionally, sodium dodecyl sulfate had enhancement effect on co-transport of GO and tetracycline. Findings from this study clearly indicated that antibiotics and carbon based nanomaterials may transport together under various solution chemistry conditions, and consequently affect their fates in aquatic environments.

Abstract
Pharmaceutical pollution has emerged as a highly concerned issue due to its adverse effects. Elevated concentrations of pharmaceuticals in water should be regulated to satisfy the requirement for the provision of clean water. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with high specific surface area, controllable porous structure, and facile modification can serve as promising adsorbents for the removal of pharmaceutical contaminants from water. In this review, a selected collection illustrating the reliable strategies and concepts to prepare the MOFs-based materials with superior water stability is described. In addition, recent progress on the adsorptive removal of pharmaceutical pollutant using burgeoning and functional MOFs is also summarized in terms of maximum capacity, equilibrium time, and regenerate ability. Meanwhile, to understand the adsorption mechanism, related interactions including coordination with unsaturated site, pore-filling effect, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and π-π stacking are further discussed. Finally, critical perspectives/assessment of future research emphasising on fabricating desirable MOFs and establishing structure-property relationships to facilitate capture performance are identified.

Abstract
Water-borne emerging pollutants are among the greatest concern of our modern society. Many of these pollutants are categorized as endocrine disruptors due to their environmental toxicities. They are harmful to humans, aquatic animals, and plants, to the larger extent, destroying the ecosystem. Thus, effective environmental remediations of these pollutants became necessary. Among the various remediation techniques, adsorption and photocatalytic degradation have been single out as the most promising. This review is devoted to the compilations and analysis of the role of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites as potential materials for such applications. Emerging organic pollutants, like dyes, herbicides, pesticides, pharmaceutical products, phenols, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and perfluorinated alkyl substances, have been extensively studied. Important parameters that affect these processes, such as surface area, bandgap, percentage removal, equilibrium time, adsorption capacity, and recyclability, are documented. Finally, we paint the current scenario and challenges that need to be addressed for MOFs and their composites to be exploited for commercial applications.

Abstract
Aiming at solving the issue of wastewater purification, this work synthesized NH2-MIL-88B (FeαIn1−α) photocatalysts by a simple one-pot method, which was employed for photocatalytic reduction of Cr(vi) and oxidation of TC-HCl. Compared with traditional NH2-MIL-88B (Fe) photocatalysts, NH2-MIL-88B (Fe0.6In0.4) displayed excellent photocatalytic performance; the photocatalytic redox rate for Cr(vi) and TC-HCl reached 86.83% and 72.05%, respectively. The good photocatalytic performance might be attributed to the metal-to-metal charge transition (MMCT) between Fe–O clusters and In–O clusters formed by doping In(iii) into NH2-MIL-88B (Fe), which provides effective active sites for the photocatalytic reduction and oxidation routes. Besides, the synergistic effect of the ligand-to-metal charge transition (LMCT) and MMCT expands the separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers and inhibits the recombination of electron–hole pairs, thus effectively improving the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, this work could provide a new method for the construction of mixed metal MOFs for the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants. Abstract
Metal-organic frameworks, an emerging class of porous material, have developed rapidly in recent years. In order to clarify the application of metal-organic frameworks in the field of environmental science, 1386 articles over the last 20 years were obtained from Scopus and analysed by the bibliometric method. And the collaboration between countries, institutions and authors and the co-occurrence of keywords were also conducted using VOSviewer. The results indicated that this area of research has entered a fast-developing stage. The number of articles published has grown from 7 articles in 1999 to 378 articles in 2018. The most productive country was China with 626 articles published. The most productive institution was the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the most productive author was Jhung SH from Kyungpook National University of South Korea. Although metal-organic frameworks have been widely used in adsorption and catalytic degradation of pollutants from the environment, the removal mechanism of pollutants by MOFs, the stability improvement and the cost reduction of metal-organic frameworks are still the main challenges for their practical applications.

Abstract
Serious environmental and human health problems caused by the abuse of antibiotics have attracted worldwide concern. Recently, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with high porosity have drawn wide attention for their effects in the adsorption and removal of pollutants from complex matrices. Herein, a high-stable metal organic framework (MOF), i.e., ((ZnCl2)3(L)2·DMF)n, where L=1,3,5-tris((pyridin-4-ylthio)methyl)benzene), MOF 1, was applied to adsorb and remove tetracycline from sewage and dairy products. The results showed that MOF 1 exhibited a strong performance in the adsorption of tetracycline. The effects of initial pH values, adsorbent dose, contact time and ionic strength of the adsorption performance of MOF 1 were investigated. The adsorption kinetics best fit the pseudo-second order model, and the adsorption isotherms matched the Langmuir adsorption model well. It was indicated that both chemical adsorption and physical adsorption play an important role in the adsorption process, and the adsorption of tetracycline was homogeneous and occurred on a monolayer on the surface of MOF 1. Additionally, the stability of MOF 1 and the details of the adsorption mechanism were also investigated. Thus, this study provides a new candidate for the application of MOFs-based adsorbents in the removal of antibiotics from sewage and dairy products.
