Indigenous plant species and invasive alien species tend to diverge functionally under heavy metal pollution and drought stress

Unveiling the resistance of native weed communities: insights for managing invasive weed species in disturbed environments

Weed communities influence the dynamics of ecosystems, particularly in disturbed environments where anthropogenic activities often result in higher pollution. Understanding the dynamics existing between native weed communities and invasive species in disturbed environments is crucial for effective management and normal ecosystem functioning. Recognising the potential resistance of native weed communities to invasion in disturbed environments can help identify suitable native plants for restoration operations. This review aims to investigate the adaptations exhibited by native and non-native weeds that may affect invasions within disturbed environments. Factors such as ecological characteristics, altered soil conditions, and adaptations of native weed communities that potentially confer a competitive advantage relative to non-native or invasive weeds in disturbed environments are analysed. Moreover, the roles of biotic interactions such as competition, mutualistic relationships, and allelopathy in shaping the invasion resistance of native weed communities are described. Emphasis is given to the consideration of the resistance of native weeds as a key factor in invasion dynamics that provides insights for conservation and restoration efforts in disturbed environments. Additionally, this review underscores the need for further research to unravel the underlying mechanisms and to devise targeted management strategies. These strategies aim to promote the resistance of native weed communities and mitigate the negative effects of invasive weed species in disturbed environments. By delving deeper into these insights, we can gain an understanding of the ecological dynamics within disturbed ecosystems and develop valuable insights for the management of invasive species, and to restore long-term ecosystem sustainability.

Impact of trace elements on invasive plants: Attenuated competitiveness yet sustained dominance over native counterparts

Trace element pollution has emerged as an increasingly severe environmental challenge owing to human activities, particularly in urban ecosystems. In farmlands, invasive species commonly outcompete native species when subjected to trace element treatments, as demonstrated in experiments with individual invader-native pairs. However, it is uncertain if these findings apply to a wider range of species in urban soils with trace elements. Thus, we designed a greenhouse experiment to simulate the current copper and zinc levels in urban soils (102.29 mg kg-1 and 148.32 mg kg-1, respectively). The experiment involved four pairs of invasive alien species and their natural co-existing native species to investigate the effects of essential trace elements in urban soil on the growth and functional traits of invasive and native species, as well as their interspecific relationship. The results showed that adding trace elements weakened the competitiveness of invasive species. Nonetheless, trace element additions did not change the outcome of competition, consistently favoring invasion successfully. Under trace element addition treatments, invasive species and native species still maintained functional differentiation trend. Furthermore, the crown area, average leaf area and leaf area per plant of invasive species were higher than those of native species by 157 %, 177 % and 178 % under copper treatment, and 194 %, 169 % and 188 % under zinc treatment, respectively. Additionally, interspecific competition enhanced the root growth of invasive species by 21 % with copper treatment and 14 % with zinc treatment. The ability of invasive species to obtain light energy and absorb water and nutrients might be the key to their successful invasion.

Effects of environmental metal and metalloid pollutants on plants and human health: exploring nano-remediation approach

Metal and metalloid pollutants severely threatens environmental ecosystems and human health, necessitating effective remediation strategies. Nanoparticle (NPs)-based approaches have gained significant attention as promising solutions for efficient removing heavy metals from various environmental matrices. The present review is focused on green synthesized NPs-mediated remediation such as the implementation of iron, carbon-based nanomaterials, metal oxides, and bio-based NPs. The review also explores the mechanisms of NPs interactions with heavy metals, including adsorption, precipitation, and redox reactions. Critical factors influencing the remediation efficiency, such as NPs size, surface charge, and composition, are systematically examined. Furthermore, the environmental fate, transport, and potential risks associated with the application of NPs are critically evaluated. The review also highlights various sources of metal and metalloid pollutants and their impact on human health and translocation in plant tissues. Prospects and challenges in translating NPs-based remediation from laboratory research to real-world applications are proposed. The current work will be helpful to direct future research endeavors and promote the sustainable implementation of metal and metalloid elimination.

The promoting effects of soil microplastics on alien plant invasion depend on microplastic shape and concentration

Both alien plant invasions and soil microplastic pollution have become a concerning threat for terrestrial ecosystems, with consequences on the human well-being. However, our current knowledge of microplastic effects on the successful invasion of plants remains limited, despite numerous studies demonstrating the direct and indirect impacts of microplastics on plant performance. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a greenhouse experiment involving the mixtures of soil and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) microplastic pellets and fragments at the concentrations of 0, 0.5 % and 2.0 %. Additionally, we included Solidago decurrens (native plant) and S. canadensis (alien invasive plant) as the target plants. Each pot contained an individual of either species, after six-month cultivation, plant biomass and antioxidant enzymes, as well as soil properties including soil moisture, pH, available nutrient, and microbial biomass were measured. Our results indicated that microplastic effects on soil properties and plant growth indices depended on the Solidago species, microplastic shapes and concentrations. For example, microplastics exerted positive effects on soil moisture of the soil with native species but negative effects with invasive species, which were impacted by microplastic shapes and concentrations, respectively. Microplastics significantly impacted catalase (P < 0.05) and superoxide dismutase (P < 0.01), aboveground biomass (P < 0.01), and belowground/aboveground biomass (P < 0.01) of the native species depending on microplastic shapes, but no significant effects on those of the invasive species. Furthermore, microplastics effects on soil properties, nutrient, nutrient ratio, and plant antioxidant enzyme activities contributed to plant biomass differently among these two species. These results suggested that the microplastics exerted a more pronounced impact on native Solidago plants than the invasive ones. This implies that the alien invasive species displays greater resistance to microplastic pollution, potentially promoting their invasion. Overall, our study contributes to a better understanding of the promoting effects of microplastic pollution on plant invasion.

Removal effect of pollutants from stormwater runoff in shallow bioretention system with gramineous plants

The bioretention system is one of the most widely used low impact development (LID) facilities with efficient purification capacity for stormwater, and its planting design has been a hot spot for research at home and abroad. In this paper, ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), bermuda (Cynodon dactylon Linn.), bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge), and green grass (Cynodon dactylon × C .transadlensis 'Tifdwarf') were chosen as plant species to construct a shallow bioretention system. The growth traits and nutrient absorption ability of four gramineous plants were analyzed. Their tolerance, enrichment, and transportation capacity were also evaluated to compare plant species and their absorptive capacity of heavy metals (Cu, Pb, and Zn). Results showed that the maximum absorption rate (Imax) ranged from 22.1 to 42.4 μg/(g·h) for P and ranged from 65.4 to 104.8 μg/(g·h) for NH4+-N; ryegrass had the strongest absorption capacity for heavy metals and the maximum removal rates of Cu, Pb, and Zn by four grasses were 78.4, 59.4, and 51.3%, respectively; the bioretention cell with ryegrass (3#) was significantly more effective in purifying than the unplanted bioretention cell (1#) during the simulated rainfall test. Overall, the system parameters were optimized to improve the technical application of gramineous plants in the bioretention system.

Evaluating the role of rhizosphere microbial home-field advantage in Betula luminifera adaptation to antimony mining areas

It has been established that the coevolution of plants and the rhizosphere microbiome in response to abiotic stress can result in the recruitment of specific functional microbiomes. However, the potential of inoculated rhizosphere microbiomes to enhance plant fitness and the inheritance of adaptive traits in subsequent generations remains unclear. In this study, cross-inoculation trials were conducted using seeds, rhizosphere microbiome, and in situ soil collected from areas of Betula luminifera grown in both antimony mining and control sites. Compared to the control site, plants originating from mining areas exhibited stronger adaptive traits, specifically manifested as significant increases in hundred-seed weight, specific surface area, and germination rate, as well as markedly enhanced seedling survival rate and biomass. Inoculation with mining microbiomes could enhance the fitness of plants in mining sites through a "home-field advantage" while also improving the fitness of plants originating from control sites. During the initial phase of seedling development, bacteria play a crucial role in promoting growth, primarily due to their mechanisms of metal resistance and nutrient cycling. This study provided evidence that the outcomes of long-term coevolution between plants and the rhizosphere microbiome in mining areas can be passed on to future generations. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that transgenerational inheritance and rhizosphere microbiome inoculation are important factors in improving the adaptability of plants in mining areas. The findings have important implications for vegetation restoration and ecological environment improvement in mining areas.

Soil cadmium pollution facilitated the invasion of alligator weed through enhanced herbivore resistance and competitive ability over a congeneric species

A number of invasive plant species, such as Alternanthera philoxeroides, have been documented to be able to accumulate trace metal elements in their tissues. Since metal accumulation in plants can serve as a defence against herbivores, we hypothesized that metal pollution will increase herbivore resistance of metal-accumulating invasive plant species and such a benefit will grant them a competitive advantage over local co-occurring plants. In this study, we compared the differences in plant growth and herbivore feeding preference between A. philoxeroides and its native congener Alternanthera sessilis in single and mixed cultures with and without soil cadmium (Cd) pollution. The results showed that A. philoxeroides plants were more tolerant to Cd stress and accumulated more Cd in the leaves than A. sessilis. Cd exposure increased the resistance of A. philoxeroides against a specialist and a generalist herbivore compared with A. sessilis. Competition experiments indicated that Cd stress largely increased the competitive advantage of A. philoxeroides over A. sessilis with or without herbivore pressures. The differences in herbivore resistance between the two plant species under soil Cd stress are most likely due to the deterring effect of Cd accumulation and Cd-enhanced mechanical defences rather than changes in leaf specialized metabolites.

A Green Approach Used for Heavy Metals 'Phytoremediation' Via Invasive Plant Species to Mitigate Environmental Pollution: A Review

Heavy metals (HMs) normally occur in nature and are rapidly released into ecosystems by anthropogenic activities, leading to a series of threats to plant productivity as well as human health. Phytoremediation is a clean, eco-friendly, and cost-effective method for reducing soil toxicity, particularly in weedy plants (invasive plant species (IPS)). This method provides a favorable tool for HM hyperaccumulation using invasive plants. Improving the phytoremediation strategy requires a profound knowledge of HM uptake and translocation as well as the development of resistance or tolerance to HMs. This review describes a comprehensive mechanism of uptake and translocation of HMs and their subsequent detoxification with the IPS via phytoremediation. Additionally, the improvement of phytoremediation through advanced biotechnological strategies, including genetic engineering, nanoparticles, microorganisms, CRISPR-Cas9, and protein basis, is discussed. In summary, this appraisal will provide a new platform for the uptake, translocation, and detoxification of HMs via the phytoremediation process of the IPS.

Water deficit aggravated the inhibition of photosynthetic performance of maize under mercury stress but is alleviated by brassinosteroids

Mercury (Hg) significantly inhibits maize (Zea mays L.) production, which could be aggravated by water deficit (WD) due to climate change. However, there is no report on the maize in response to combined their stresses. This work was conducted for assessing the response and adaptive mechanism of maize to combined Hg and WD stress using two maize cultivars, Xianyu (XY) 335 and Yudan (YD) 132. The analysis was based on plant growth, physiological function, and transcriptomic data. Compared with the single Hg stress, Hg accumulation in whole plant and translocation factor (TF) under Hg+WD were increased by 64.51 % (1.44 mg kg^-1) and 260.00 %, respectively, for XY 335; and 50.32 % (0.62 mg kg^-1) and 220.02 %, respectively, for YD 132. Combined Hg and WD stress further increased the reactive oxygen species accumulation, aggravated the damage of the thylakoid membrane, and decreased chlorophyll content compared with single stress. For example, Chl a and Chl b contents of XY 335 were significantly decreased by 48.67 % and 28.08 %, respectively at 48 h after Hg+WD treatment compared with Hg stress. Furthermore, transcriptome analysis revealed that most of down-regulated genes were enriched in photosynthetic-antenna proteins, photosynthesis, chlorophyll and porphyrin metabolism pathways (PsbS1, PSBQ1 and FDX1 etc.) under combined stress, reducing light energy capture and electron transport. However, most genes related to the brassinosteroids (BRs) signaling pathway were up-regulated under Hg+WD stress. Correspondingly, exogenous BRs significantly enhanced the maize tolerance to stress by decreasing Hg accumulation and TF, and raising activities of antioxidant enzyme, the content of chlorophyll and photosynthetic performance. The PI, Fv/Fm and Fv/Fo of Hg+WD+BR treatment were increased by 29.88 %, 32.06 %, and 14.56 %, respectively, for XY 335 compared to Hg+WD. Overall, combined Hg and WD stress decreased photosynthetic efficiency by adversely affecting light absorption and electron transport, especially in stress-sensitive variety, but BRs could alleviate the inhibition of photosynthesis, providing a novel strategy for enhancing crop Hg and WD tolerance and food safety.

Identification of GOLDEN2-like transcription factor genes in soybeans and their role in regulating plant development and metal ion stresses

The Golden 2-Like (G2-like or GLK) transcription factors are essential for plant growth, development, and many stress responses as well as heavy metal stress. However, G2-like regulatory genes have not been studied in soybean. This study identified the genes for 130 G2-Like candidates' in the genome of Glycine max (soybean). These GLK genes were located on all 20 chromosomes, and several of them were segmentally duplicated. Most GLK family proteins are highly conserved in Arabidopsis and soybean and were classified into five major groups based on phylogenetic analysis. These GmGLK gene promoters share cis-acting elements involved in plant responses to abscisic acid, methyl jasmonate, auxin signaling, low temperature, and biotic and abiotic stresses. RNA-seq expression data revealed that the GLK genes were classified into 12 major groups and differentially expressed in different tissues or organs. The co-expression network complex revealed that the GmGLK genes encode proteins involved in the interaction of genes related to chlorophyll biosynthesis, circadian rhythms, and flowering regulation. Real-time quantitative PCR analysis confirmed the expression profiles of eight GLK genes in response to cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) stress, with some GLK genes significantly induced by both Cd and Cu stress treatments, implying a functional role in defense responsiveness. Thus, we present a comprehensive perspective of the GLK genes in soybean and emphasize their important role in crop development and metal ion stresses.

How Do Plants Respond to Combined Drought and Salinity Stress?-A Systematic Review

Plants are frequently exposed to one or more abiotic stresses, including combined salinity-drought, which significantly lowers plant growth. Many studies have been conducted to evaluate the responses of plants to combined salinity and drought stress. However, a meta-analysis-based systematic review has not been conducted yet. Therefore, this study analyzed how plants respond differently to combined salinity-drought stress compared to either stress alone. We initially retrieved 536 publications from databases and selected 30 research articles following a rigorous screening. Data on plant growth-related, physiological, and biochemical parameters were collected from these selected articles and analyzed. Overall, the combined salinity-drought stress has a greater negative impact on plant growth, photosynthesis, ionic balance, and oxidative balance than either stress alone. In some cases, salinity had a greater impact than drought stress and vice versa. Drought stress inhibited photosynthesis more than salinity, whereas salinity caused ionic imbalance more than drought stress. Single salinity and drought reduced shoot biomass equally, but salinity reduced root biomass more than drought. Plants experienced more oxidative stress under combined stress conditions because antioxidant levels did not increase in response to combined salinity-drought stress compared to individual salinity or drought stress. This study provided a comparative understanding of plants' responses to individual and combined salinity and drought stress, and identified several research gaps. More comprehensive genetic and physiological studies are needed to understand the intricate interplay between salinity and drought in plants.

Nitric oxide mediated alleviation of abiotic challenges in plants

Agriculture and ecosystem are negatively influenced by the abiotic stresses which create solemn pressures on plants as they are sessile in nature leading to excessive losses in economy. For maintenance of sustainable agriculture and to fulfil the cumulative call of food for rapidly growing population worldwide, it becomes crucial to protects the crop plants from climate fluctuations. Plants fight back against these challenges by generation of redox molecules comprising reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) and cause modulation at cellular, physiological and molecular levels. Nitric oxide (NO) deliver tolerance to several biotic and abiotic stresses in plants by acting as signalling molecule or free radicals. It is also intricated in several developmental processes in plants using different mechanisms. Supplementation of exogenous NO reduce toxicity of abiotic stresses and provide resistance. In this review article, we summarize the recent research studies (five years) depicting the functional role of NO in alleviation of abiotic stresses such as drought, cold, heat, heavy metals and flooding. Moreover, by investigating studies found that among heavy metals works associated with Hg, Pb, and Cr is limited comparatively. Additionally, role of NO in abiotic stress resistance such as cold, freezing and heat stress less/poorly investigated. Consequently, further emphasis should be diverted towards how NO can facilitate protection against these stresses. In recent studies mostly beneficial role of NO against abiotic challenges have been elucidated by observing physiological/biochemical parameters but relatively inadequate research done at the transcripts level or gene regulation subsequently researchers should include it in future. Lastly, brief outline and an evaluative discussion on the present information and future prospective provided. Altogether, these inclusive experimental agendas could facilitate in future to produce climate tolerant plants. This will help to confront the constant fluctuations in the environment and to reduce the challenges in way of agriculture productivity and global food demands.

Silver nanoparticles intensify the allelopathic intensity of four invasive plant species in the Asteraceae

This study aimed to estimate the allelopathic intensity of four Asteraceae invasive plant species (IPS), including Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronq., Erigeron annuus (L.) Pers., Bidens pilosa (L.), and Aster subulatus Michx., by testing the effect of leaf extracts on the seed germination and seedling growth (SGe and SGr) of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) in combination with two particle sizes of silver nanoparticles. These four IPS decreased the germination of lettuce seeds but increased the growth of lettuce seedlings. The allelopathic intensity of the four IPS decreased in the following order: B. pilosa > C. canadensis > E. annuus > A. subulatus. Silver nanoparticles decreased the SGe and SGr of lettuce. The 20 nm silver nanoparticles affected the competition intensity for water and the absorption of inorganic salts by lettuce more intensively than the 80 nm nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles intensify the allelopathic intensity of the four invasive plant species on the SGe and SGr of lettuce. The allelopathic intensity of B. pilosa was higher than that of the other three IPS when they were polluted with silver nanoparticles. Thus, silver nanoparticles could facilitate the invasion process of the four IPS, particularly B. pilosa, via an increase in the intensity of allelopathy.

The rapid evolution of an invasive plant due to increased selection pressures throughout its invasive history

Invasive plants are highly successful because they can quickly adapt to selection pressures imposed by both biotic and abiotic stressors. Since selection pressures may vary across temporal and biogeographical gradients, the growth and fitness of invasive plants varies across time. However, only a few studies have focused on the evolutionary potential of invasive plants following their establishment. In this study, the impacts of cadmium (Cd) on the germination and seedling growth of an invasive plant, Ageratina adenophora, were examined. The seeds were collected from different historical populations at the invasion stage (during the early, middle, and new stages of invasion). Plant performance was tested under both heavy metal and simulated herbivory treatments to examine the evolution of A. adenophora under different selection pressures. It was found that early stage A. adenophora populations have higher germinability and weaker seedling growth than the new stage populations. Compared with new stage populations, early-stage populations are more tolerant to simulated herbivory and their germination potential tends to be higher under high Cd stress. It seems that the adaptive strategy of A. adenophora is to invest more energy in growth during the initial stage of invasion. As selection pressures increases over time, more energy seems to be shifted to the improvement of seed quality as well as to the vegetative growth system which improves its ability to tolerate stressful environments. It is important to consider the invasion history of a species when studying the invasive and evolutionary potential of plant species.

Comprehensive Genomic Survey, Evolution, and Expression Analysis of GIF Gene Family during the Development and Metal Ion Stress Responses in Soybean

The GIF gene family is one of the plant transcription factors specific to seed plants. The family members are expressed in all lateral organs produced by apical and floral meristems and contribute to the development of leaves, shoots, flowers, and seeds. This study identified eight GIF genes in the soybean genome and clustered them into three groups. Analyses of Ka/Ks ratios and divergence times indicated that they had undergone purifying selection during species evolution. RNA-sequence and relative expression patterns of these GmGIF genes tended to be conserved, while different expression patterns were also observed between the duplicated GIF members in soybean. Numerous cis-regulatory elements related to plant hormones, light, and stresses were found in the promoter regions of these GmGIF genes. Moreover, the expression patterns of GmGIF members were confirmed in soybean roots under cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu) stress, indicating their potential functions in the heavy metal response in soybean. Our research provides valuable information for the functional characterization of each GmGIF gene in different legumes in the future.

Genome-wide identification and genetic characterization of the CaMYB family and its response to five types of heavy metal stress in hot pepper (Capsicum annuum cv. CM334)

MYB proteins play a crucial role in plant growth and development and stress responses. In this study, 160 members of the MYB gene family from the pepper genome database were used to analyze gene structures, chromosome localization, collinearity, genetic affinity and expression in response to heavy metals. The results identified R2R3-MYB members and further phylogenetically classified them into 35 subgroups based on highly conserved gene structures and motifs. Collinearity analysis showed that segmental duplication events played a crucial role in the functional expansion of the CaMYB gene family by intraspecific collinearity, and at least 12 pairs of CaMYB genes existed between species prior to the differentiation between monocots and dicots. Moreover, the upstream CaMYB genes were mainly localized to the phytohormone elements ABRE and transcription factor elements MYB and MYC. Further analysis revealed that MYB transcription factors were closely associated with a variety of abiotic stress-related proteins (e.g., MAC-complex and SKIP). Under the stress of five metal ions, Cd²⁺, Cu²⁺, Pb²⁺, Zn²⁺, and Fe³⁺, the expression levels of some CaMYB family genes were upregulated. Of these genes, pairing homologous 1 (PH-1), PH-13, and PH-15 in the roots of Capsicum annuum were upregulated to the greatest extent, indicating that these three MYB family members are particularly sensitive to these five metals. This study provides a theoretical reference for the analysis of the molecular regulatory mechanism of MYB family genes in mediating the response to heavy metals in plants. This study reveals the mode of interaction between MYB and a variety of abiotic stress proteins and clarifies the biological functions of CaMYB family members in the regulation of heavy metal stress.

Salicylic acid pre-treatment modulates Pb2+-induced DNA damage vis-à-vis oxidative stress in Allium cepa roots

The current study investigated the putative role of salicylic acid (SA) in modulating Pb²⁺-induced DNA and oxidative damage in Allium cepa roots. Pb²⁺ exposure enhanced free radical generation and reduced DNA integrity and antioxidant machinery after 24 h; however, SA pre-treatment (for 24 h) ameliorated Pb²⁺ toxicity. Pb²⁺ exposure led to an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) accumulation and enhanced superoxide radical and hydroxyl radical levels. SA improved the efficiency of enzymatic antioxidants (ascorbate and guaiacol peroxidases [APX, GPX], superoxide dismutases [SOD], and catalases [CAT]) at 50-μM Pb²⁺ concentration. However, SA pre-treatment could not improve the efficiency of CAT and APX at 500 μM of Pb²⁺ treatment. Elevated levels of ascorbate and glutathione were observed in A. cepa roots pre-treated with SA and exposed to 50 μM Pb²⁺ treatment, except for oxidized glutathione. Nuclear membrane integrity test demonstrated the ameliorating effect of SA by reducing the number of dark blue-stained nuclei as compared to Pb²⁺ alone treatments. SA was successful in reducing DNA damage in cell exposed to higher concentration of Pb²⁺ (500 μM) as observed through comet assay. The study concludes that SA played a major role in enhancing defense mechanism and protecting against DNA damage by acclimatizing the plant to Pb²⁺-induced toxicity.

Long period exposure to serious cadmium pollution benefits an invasive plant (Alternanthera philoxeroides) competing with its native congener (Alternanthera sessilis)

Many aggressive plants possess high tolerance to heavy metals, but little is known about their invasiveness at heavy metal polluted sites. We performed a greenhouse experiment to examine the impacts of Cd (0, 10, 30, 60, and 100 mg kg^-1) and inter-specific competition on the reproductive capability of an invasive plant, Alternanthera philoxeroides, and its native congener, Alternanthera sessilis. We also examined the population dynamics of both native and invasive species in a simulated field experiment. Compared with A. philoxeroides, native A. sessilis was a stronger competitor as measured by vegetative growth, sexual reproduction, and dominance status in a mixed culture. However, A. philoxeroides showed great plasticity in root mass ratio that was positively affected by inter-specific competition and high Cd levels. Such high root allocation might allow for delayed growth of A. philoxeroides rhizomes as the relative cover of A. philoxeroides to A. sessilis in the field experiment gradually increased and > 1 after nine months culture, especially at high Cd treatment. Our results suggest that the invasiveness of A. philoxeroides is highly context- and time-dependent. In severely polluted environments, clonal propagation of A. sessilis is likely inhibited by the synergistic negative effects of inter-specific competition and heavy metal pollution, and a long time co-existence of these two competing species would facilitate the colonization of invasive plant.

Ornamental Plant Efficiency for Heavy Metals Phytoextraction from Contaminated Soils Amended with Organic Materials

Accumulation of heavy metals (HMs) by ornamental plants (OPs) from contaminated agriculture soils is a unique technique that can efficiently reduce the metal load in the food chain. Amaranthus tricolor L. has attractive characteristics acquiring a higher growth rate and large biomass when grown at heavy metal contaminated soils. Site-specific detailed information is not available on the use of A. tricolor plant in metal phytoremediation from the polluted sites. The study aimed to enhance the uptake of HMs (Pb, Zn, and Cu) via amending poultry litter extract (PLE), vinasse sugarcane (VSC), and humic acid (HA) as natural mobilized organic materials compared to ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA), as a common mobilized chemical agent by A. tricolor plant. The studied soils collected from Helwan, El-Gabal El-Asfar (Cairo Governorate), Arab El-Madabeg (Assiut Governorate), Egypt, and study have been conducted under pot condition. Our results revealed all organic materials in all studied soils, except EDTA in EL-Gabal El-Asfar soil, significantly increased the dry weight of the A. tricolor plant compared to the control treatment. The uptake of Pb and Zn significantly (p > 0.05) increased due to applying all organic materials to the studied soils. HA application caused the highest uptake as shown in Pb concentration by more than 5 times in Helwan soil and EDTA by 65% in El-Gabal El-Asfar soil while VSC increased it by 110% in El-Madabeg soil. Also, an increase in Zn concentration due to EDTA application was 58, 42, and 56% for Helwan, El-Gabal El-Asfar, and El-Madabeg soil, respectively. In all studied soils, the application of organic materials increased the remediation factor (RF) than the control. El-Madabeg soil treated with vinasse sugarcane gave the highest RF values; 6.40, 3.26, and 4.02% for Pb, Zn, and Cu, respectively, than the control. Thus, we identified A. tricolor as a successful ornamental candidate that, along with organic mobilization amendments, most efficiently develop soil health, reduce metal toxicity, and recommend remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils. Additionally, long-term application of organic mobilization amendments and continued growth of A. tricolor under field conditions could be recommended for future directions to confirm the results.

Nitrogen application and osmotic stress antagonistically affect wheat seed germination and seedling growth

Atmospheric nitrogen (N) deposition (AtNiDe) and drought stress (DS) have strongly affected plant growth. However, previous research has primarily focused on the effects of AtNiDe with various levels and DS on plant growth (especially seed germination and seedling growth). This study aimed to evaluate the single and combined effects of AtNiDe with four types (compounds: NH₄-N, NO₃-N, CO(NH₂)₂-N, and a mixture of the three types of N) and DS (three levels: control, low, and high) on wheat seed germination and seedling growth. The AtNiDe treatment increased wheat seed germination and seedling growth. Mixed N exerted a greater positive effect on wheat seed germination and seedling growth than single N forms. Organic N also had a greater positive effect on wheat seed germination and seedling growth than reduced inorganic N. The DS treatment decreased wheat seed germination and seedling growth. The AtNiDe treatment alleviated the adverse effects of DS on wheat seed germination and seedling growth. Mixed N had the greatest effect on alleviating the adverse effects of DS on wheat seed germination and seedling growth. Thus, AtNiDe and DS antagonistically affected wheat seed germination and seedling growth. NOVELTY STATEMENT This study assessed the single and combined effects of atmospheric nitrogen deposition with four types and drought stress at three levels on wheat seed germination and seedling growth. Generally, nitrogen and drought antagonistically affected wheat seed germination and seedling growth.

The allelopathy of horseweed with different invasion degrees in three provinces along the Yangtze River in China

The effect of allelopathy from invasive alien plants (IAPs) on native species is one of the main factors for their adaptation and diffusion. IAPs can have different degrees of invasion under natural succession and are distributed in numerous regions. Seed germination and seedling growth (SGe-SGr) play a crucial role in population recruitment. Thus, it is critical to illustrate the differences in the allelopathy caused by an IAP with different degrees of invasion in numerous regions on SGe-SGr of native species to describe the primary force behind their adaptation and diffusion. This study assessed the allelopathy of the notorious IAP horseweed (Conyza canadensis (L.) Cronq.) on SGe-SGr of the native lettuce species (Lactuca sativa L.) under different degrees of invasion (light degree of invasion and heavy degree of invasion) in three provinces (Jiangsu, Anhui, and Hubei) along the Yangtze River in China. The allelopathy of horseweed leaf extract on lettuce SGe-SGr remarkably increased with the increased degree of invasion, which may be due to the buildup of allelochemicals generated by horseweed with a heavy degree of invasion compared with a light degree of invasion. A high concentration of horseweed leaf extract resulted in noticeably stronger allelopathy on lettuce SGe-SGr compared to the extract with a low concentration. There are noticeable differences in the allelopathy of the extract of horseweed leaves from different provinces on lettuce SGe-SGr with the following order i.e. Jiangsu > Hubei > Anhui. This may be due to the high latitudes for the three sampling sites in Jiangsu compared with the latitudes for the collection sites in Hubei and Anhui. There are certain differences in the environments among the three provinces. Thus, the allelopathy of horseweed on SGe-SGr of lettuce may have a greater negative impact in Jiangsu compared to the other two provinces.

Genome-wide analysis of the NRAMP gene family in potato (Solanum tuberosum): Identification, expression analysis and response to five heavy metals stress

NRAMP family genes participate in the absorption and transport of heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn) and play an important role in the response to heavy metal stress. There is an abundance of research on these genes in bacteria, plants and fungi, although not in S. tuberosum. A total of 48 members(potato(5), Arabidopsis(7), Tomato(9), pepper(9), rice(12) and tobacco(6)) were identified from 6 species (potato (Solanum tuberosum), Arabidopsis thaliana, Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), pepper (Capsicum annuum), rice (Oryza sativa) and tobacco (Nicotiana attenuate)) and were classified into four subgroups. Across NRAMP gene family members, there are 15 highly conserved motifs that have similar genetic structures and characteristics. In addition, a total of 16 pairs of colinear genes were found in eight species. Analysis of cis-elements indicated that, in response to abiotic stress, NRAMPs are mainly regulated by phytohormones and transcription factors. In addition, analysis of expression profiles indicated that StNRAMP4 is mainly expressed in the roots. According to a qRT-PCR-based analysis of the StNRAMP family, with the exception of Pb²⁺ stress, StNRAMPs positively responded to stress from Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺, Zn²⁺ and Ni²⁺ and The expression patterns is similar of StNRAMP2, under Pb²⁺, and Cu²⁺ treatment, the relative expression peaked at 24 h. the relative expression peaked at 12 h and was upregulated 428-fold in the roots under Ni²⁺ stress. Under Cd²⁺ stress, StNRAMP3 was upregulated 28-fold in the leaves. StNRAMP1, StNRAMP4 and StNRAMP5 showed significant upregulation under Cu²⁺, Cd²⁺ and Zn²⁺ stress, respectively. Expression of StNRAMPs could be specifically induced by heavy metals, implying their possible role in the transport and absorption of heavy metals. This research explains the colinear characteristics of NRAMPs in several food crop species, which is useful for providing important genetic resources for cultivating food crop that accumulate low amounts of heavy metals and for explaining the biological functions of NRAMPs in plants.

Cadmium hyperaccumulation as an inexpensive metal armor against disease in Crofton weed

Invasive plants readily invade metal-contaminated areas. The hyperaccumulation of toxic heavy metals is not an uncommon feature among plant species. Although several hypotheses were proposed to explain this phenomenon, it is currently unclear how hyperaccumulation may benefit plants. The invasive Crofton weed (Ageratina adenophora) is a known hyperaccumulator of chromium and lead. We previously found that the species can also hyperaccumulate cadmium. The role of phytoaccumulation in defense to pathogen attack is unclear. We inoculated A. adenophora plants with a common generalist pathogen (Rhizoctonia solani) to test its resistance under cadmium treatment. We found evidence that cadmium hyperaccumulation reduced pathogen infection in A. adenophora. Our findings indicate elemental defense is highly cost efficient for hyperaccumulators inhabiting metal-contaminated sites, where plants were only modestly affected by cadmium. The reduction in pathogen damage conferred by cadmium was relatively high, particularly under lower cadmium levels. However, the benefits at higher levels may be capped. Elemental defense may be a key mechanism for plant invasion into polluted sites, especially in regions with widespread industrial activity. Our study highlights the importance of testing different metal concentrations when testing plant resistance and the importance of considering enemy attack when selecting plants for phytoremediation.
