Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study focused on the association of the Dietary Inflammatory Index (DII) with the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). METHODS Data from two cycles of NHANES (2007-2010) were analyzed. Weighted logistic regression models were constructed to explore the relationship between DII and GDM. Stratified and subgroup analyses with adjustment for confounding factors were carried out to explore the association between DII and GDM. Mediation analysis was conducted to investigate potential mediating factors. RESULTS A total of 1,421 samples were analyzed. Based on the weighted logistic regression model, a strong positive association was observed between DII score and GDM risk (OR: 1.14, 95%CI: 1.02-1.26, P<0.01), suggesting that a pro-inflammatory diet could considerably increase the likelihood of GDM occurrence. This positive association was particularly significant in populations who consume alcohol (OR:1.17, 95%CI: 1.03-1.34, P<0.01) and have a body mass index>30 kg/m² (OR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.38, P<0.05). Mediation analysis indicated that the white blood cell count mediated the association between DII and GDM, with an indirect effect of 0.000828 (95% CI: 0.000226-0.001347, P=0.001) and a mediation proportion of 8.01%. Specifically, the neutrophil count as a component contributed to this mediation effect (0.000774, 95% CI: 0.00014-0.001063, P=0.001), with a mediation proportion of 7.59%. CONCLUSION A pro-inflammatory diet in women elevates the likelihood of GDM occurrence. An anti-inflammatory dietary pattern may be a protective intervention for GDM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to explore the association of female reproductive factors (age at first birth (AFB), age at last birth (ALB), number of pregnancies, and live births) with history of cardiovascular disease (CVD). METHODS A total of 15,715 women aged 20 years or over from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 1999 to 2018 were included in our analysis. Weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis and restricted cubic spline (RCS) model were used to evaluate the association of AFB and ALB with history of CVD in women. Additionally, the relationship between the number of pregnancies, and live births and history of CVD was also explored. RESULTS After adjusting for potential confounding factors, the RCS plot showed a U-curve relationship between AFB, ALB and history of CVD. Among them, AFB was associated with congestive heart failure (CHF), heart attack, and stroke in a U-shaped curve. Additionally, this U-shaped correlation also exists between ALB and CHF and stroke. However, the number of pregnancies and live births was liner positive associated with history of CVD, including coronary heart disease, CHF, angina pectoris, heart attack, and stroke. CONCLUSIONS Women with younger or later AFB and ALB have higher odds of CVD in later life. Further study is warranted to verify the underlying mechanisms of this association.

Abstract
The study aimed to explore the association between five heavy metals exposure (Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Manganese, and Selenium) and mortality [all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer-related]. We integrated the data into the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2018 years. A total of 16,092 participants were recruited. The link between heavy metals exposure and mortality was analyzed by constructing a restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve, Cox proportional hazard regression model, and subgroup analysis. The RCS curve was used to show a positive linear relationship between Cadmium, Lead, and all-cause mortality. In contrast, there was a negative linear correlation between Mercury and all-cause mortality. Additionally, Manganese and Selenium also had a J-shaped and L-shaped link with all-cause mortality. The positive linear, positive linear, negative liner, J-shaped, and L-shaped relationships were observed for Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, Manganese, and Selenium and CVD mortality, respectively. Cadmium, Lead, Mercury, and Selenium were observed to exhibit positive linear, U-shaped, negative linear, and L-shaped relationships with cancer-related mortality, respectively. There was an increase and then a decrease in the link between Manganese and cancer-related morality. This study revealed the correlation between the content of different elements and different types of mortality in the U.S. general population.

Abstract
We aim to investigate the influence of waist circumference and body mass index (BMI) on all-cause death and cardiovascular-specific death in patients with hypertension. This prospective cohort study, based on waist circumference and body mass index measurements in patients with hypertension, provided risk estimates of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events. The waist circumference-to-BMI ratio (WtBR) is an anthropometric measure integrating waist circumference and BMI. We utilized multivariable Cox regression analysis, restricted cubic spline model, Kaplan-Meier plot, random forest analysis, and sensitivity analysis to assess the relationship of WtBR with all-cause mortality. Subsequently, Fine-Gray competing risk regression models were applied to precisely evaluate the probability of cardiovascular-specific death attributed to high WtBR. The results indicate that thea deceased group showed significantly higher WtBR and lower BMI compared with the alive groups (P < .05), while no significant difference was observed in waist circumference (P = .373). When analyzed as continuous, the risk of all-cause death elevated with increasing WtBR in the adjusted model with an HR of 2.42 (95% CI, 2.06-2.85). The restricted cubic spline illustrated an elevated risk of all-cause mortality as WtBR increased (J-shaped curve). Nevertheless, WtBR showed no significant association with cardiovascular-specific death and the prediction model exhibited a reliable performance in the testing set. This study supported that WtBR, an anthropometric measure, is independently associated with all-cause death in hypertensive patients. It's advisable to routinely assess waist circumference in hypertensive patients regardless of BMI, in order to more effectively manage the risk of obesity-related health.

Abstract
Purpose This study was to evaluate the association between C-reactive protein (CRP) to albumin (ALB) ratio (CAR) and the risk of mortality in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods In this retrospective cohort study, clinical data were extracted from the National Institutes of Health National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database between 2007 and 2010. Cox proportional hazard regressions were performed to assess the association between CAR and 5-year mortality in COPD patients. Subgroup analyses were applied to identify the consistency of the association based on the severity of COPD, gender, body mass index (BMI), smoking status, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and chronic kidney disease (CKD), and diabetes. The area under the curve (AUC) of the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to evaluate the predictive performance of CAR. Results A total of 1210 COPD patients were included, of which 110 COPD patients (9.09%) had 5-year mortality. The mean follow-up was 57.76 (0.33) months. A higher CAR was associated with an increased risk of 5-year mortality in COPD patients [hazard ratio (HR): 1.94, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07 to 3.50, P =0.029)]. Subgroup analysis showed that the association between CAR and mortality was especially suitable for COPD patients with mild COPD, in COPD patients who were still smoking, in COPD patients with BMI <=29.9 kg/m2, in COPD patients who were without CVD, in COPD patients who were without diabetes, and COPD patients who were without CKD. The AUCs of CAR for predicting 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year mortality in COPD patients were 0.735, 0.615, and 0.608, respectively. Conclusion CAR is strongly correlated with mortality in patients with COPD and CAR could be served as a prognostic biomarker for patients with COPD. This study may provide a promising prognostic biomarker for risk stratification and clinical management of patients with COPD.

Abstract
Diabetes could impact many ocular tissues. However, the association of the serum aldehydes with diabetes-related eye diseases (DED) remains unclear. Thus, we aimed to examine the above relationship from the general US population of 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The multivariable logistic regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to analyze the effect of serum aldehydes on the risk of DED. Pearson's correlation analysis, the restricted cubic spline (RCS) model, and the linear regression were performed to explore the association between the serum aldehydes and other parameters. The multivariable linear regression was conducted to further underlie the relationship between the serum aldehydes and the glycohemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) in DED participants. Although no significant association was observed between the serum aldehydes and the risk of DED by the multivariable logistic regression and BKMR, the Pearson correlation revealed a positive association between the HbA1c level and the serum level of heptanaldehyde and isopentanaldehyde in DED participants. The RCS model confirmed the above linear correlation. After adjusting for the cofounding factor of smoking, the multivariable linear regression revealed a significant association between the serum level of heptanaldehyde and the HbA1c level in DED participants. Our results suggest that aldehyde exposure did not significantly increase the risk of DED, while heptanaldehyde was the risk factor for increased HbA1c in DED population.

Abstract
Aldehydes are recognized environmental toxicants that may affect lipid metabolism. For instance, acrolein has been found to increase serum triglyceride (TG) levels exclusively. However, it remains unclear whether other aldehydes are also associated with hypertriglyceridemia (HTG), and what mechanisms may be involved. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2013-2014) to identify associations between serum aldehydes, liver enzymes, and HTG. Serum aldehydes included crotonaldehyde (CRAL), propanaldehyde (3AL), butyraldehyde (4AL), pentanaldehyde (5AL), isopentanaldehyde (I5AL), and heptanaldehyde (7AL). Liver enzymes included alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT). HTG was defined as fasting TG levels ≥ 1.7 mmol/L. Aldehyde co-exposure was quantified using weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), while mediation analysis was performed to investigate the role of liver enzymes. Among 1474 participants (mean age 38.6 years, male 50.0%), 426 were diagnosed with HTG. 4AL, 5AL, I5AL, and 7AL were shown to be positively associated with HTG (all P values <0.05). Aldehydes co-exposure was also positively associated with HTG (OR 1.706, 95%CI 1.299-2.240), with 5AL contributing the highest weight (35.3%). Furthermore, aldehydes co-exposure showed positive associations with ALT, AST, and GGT (all P values <0.05), and all four liver enzymes were positively associated with HTG (all P values <0.05). Mediation analysis revealed that liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and GGT) may mediate the associations of 5AL and 7AL with HTG (all P values <0.05). This study identified a positive association between aldehyde co-exposure and HTG, which may be partially mediated by liver enzymes.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the associations of pyrethroid exposure with handgrip strength and skeletal muscle mass and potential modification effects in US adults. The data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was used. Handgrip strength was determined with a handgrip dynamometer, and we quantified muscle mass by using the appendicular skeletal muscle index (ASMI). Urinary 3-Phenoxybenzoic Acid (3-PBA), a validated biomarker for pyrethroid exposure, was used in the primary analysis. After adjusting for other covariates, participants exposed to the highest tertile of 3-PBA exposure had significantly lower handgrip strength (β = -1.88, 95% CI: -3.29, -0.23, P = 0.026) than those exposed to the lowest tertile of 3-PBA. Similarly, the 3-PBA exposure was marginally significantly associated with ASMI (Tertile 3 vs. Tertile 1: β = -0.07, 95% CI: -0.14, -0.01, P = 0.056). Significant interactions were found between 3-PBA and body mass index (BMI) on handgrip strength and ASMI (P interaction < 0.05), which indicated a potential moderation effect of BMI on the associations. In conclusion, pyrethroid exposure was adversely associated with handgrip strength and skeletal muscle mass, especially in overweight and obese populations. Further studies are warranted to confirm our results and to explore the potential mechanisms.

Abstract
Aldehydes are widespread in the environment, with multiple sources such as food and beverages, industrial effluents, cigarette smoke, and additives. The toxic effects of exposure to several aldehydes have been observed in numerous studies. At the molecular level, aldehydes damage DNA, cross-link DNA and proteins, lead to lipid peroxidation, and are associated with increased disease risk including cancer. People genetically predisposed to aldehyde sensitivity exhibit severe health outcomes. In various diseases such as Fanconi's anemia and Cockayne syndrome, loss of aldehyde-metabolizing pathways in conjunction with defects in DNA repair leads to widespread DNA damage. Importantly, aldehyde-associated mutagenicity is being explored in a growing number of studies, which could offer key insights into how they potentially contribute to tumorigenesis. Here, we review the genotoxic effects of various aldehydes, focusing particularly on the DNA adducts underlying the mutagenicity of environmentally derived aldehydes. We summarize the chemical structures of the aldehydes and their predominant DNA adducts, discuss various methodologies, in vitro and in vivo, commonly used in measuring aldehyde-associated mutagenesis, and highlight some recent studies looking at aldehyde-associated mutation signatures and spectra. We conclude the Review with a discussion on the challenges and future perspectives of investigating aldehyde-associated mutagenesis.

Abstract
The relationship between aldehyde exposure and metabolic syndrome is unclear; hence, we aimed to investigate the association between serum aldehyde concentrations and metabolic syndrome. We analyzed the data of 1471 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey enrolled from 2013 to 2014. The association of serum aldehyde concentrations with metabolic syndrome was assessed via generalized linear models as well as restricted cubic splines, and endpoint events were further analyzed. After adjusting for covariates, both moderate (odds ratio [OR] = 2.73, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.34-5.56) and high (OR = 2.08, 95% CI: 1.06-4.07) concentrations of isovaleraldehyde were associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome. Interestingly, although a moderate concentration of valeraldehyde was associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome (OR = 1.08, 95% CI: 0.70-1.65), a high concentration was not (OR = 0.55, 95% CI: 0.17-1.79). Restricted cubic splines revealed a non-linear association between valeraldehyde and metabolic syndrome, and threshold effect analysis revealed that the inflection point for valeraldehyde concentration was 0.7 ng/mL. The results of the subgroup analysis revealed differences in the relationship of aldehyde exposure with components of metabolic syndrome. High isovaleraldehyde concentrations may increase the risk of metabolic syndrome, and valeraldehyde demonstrated a J-shaped relationship with the risk of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gaseous chemicals found in ambient air and exhaled breath. In particular, highly reactive aldehydes are frequently found in polluted air and have been linked to various diseases. Thus, extensive studies have been carried out to elucidate disease-specific aldehydes released from the body to develop potential biomarkers for diagnostic purposes. Mammals possess innate sensory systems, such as receptors and ion channels, to detect these VOCs and maintain physiological homeostasis. Recently, electronic biosensors such as the electronic nose have been developed for disease diagnosis. This review aims to present an overview of natural sensory receptors that can detect reactive aldehydes, as well as electronic noses that have the potential to diagnose certain diseases. In this regard, this review focuses on eight aldehydes that are well-defined as biomarkers in human health and disease. It offers insights into the biological aspects and technological advances in detecting aldehyde-containing VOCs. Therefore, this review will aid in understanding the role of aldehyde-containing VOCs in human health and disease and the technological advances for improved diagnosis.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to explore the use of aspirin in conjunction with various statins for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention in the general population of the United States (U.S.). A total of 3778 people from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys from 2011 to 2018 were included in our analysis. After adjusting for sociodemographic and common cardiovascular risk factors, we used multivariable logistic regression analysis to determine aspirin should be combined with which type of statin for better CVD preventive effects. Subgroup analyses were carried out subsequently. In comparison to the aspirin use alone, the odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals for CVD were 0.43 (0.33, 0.57), 0.69 (0.42, 1.13), 0.44 (0.31, 0.62), 0.34 (0.23, 0.50) and 0.64 (0.49, 0.84) for the combination use of aspirin and atorvastatin, lovastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin as well as simvastatin, respectively, in the fully-adjusted model. Aspirin combined with rosuvastatin was more effective in the prevention of individual CVD, including congestive heart failure, coronary heart disease, angina pectoris and heart attack, than aspirin combined with other statins. In conclusion, statins combined with aspirin have a clear advantage over aspirin alone in preventing CVD. In addition, when various sex, age, and fitness levels were considered, as well as with and without diabetes mellitus, the combination usage of aspirin and rosuvastatin had the greatest CVD preventive effects than aspirin coupled with other statins.

Abstract
Exogenous and endogenous exposure to aldehydes is seen worldwide. Aldehydes are closely associated with human diseases, especially reproductive toxicity. However, the effect of aldehyde exposure on sex steroid hormones among adults remains uninvestigated. A total of 851 participants aged over 18 years were included in this cross-sectional analysis based on data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2014. Serum aldehyde concentrations were quantified following an automated analytical method. Sex steroid hormones including total testosterone, estradiol, and sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) were detected. Multivariate linear regression models, forest plots, generalized additive model (GAM), and smooth curve fitting analysis were used to assess the associations between quartiles of aldehydes and sex steroid hormones levels after adjusting for potential confounders. Butyraldehyde and propanaldehyde were found to be negatively associated with estradiol and SHBG in females and males, respectively. β values with 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were - 20.59 (- 38.30 to - 2.88) for Q2 vs. Q1 of butyraldehyde and - 8.13 (- 14.92 to - 1.33) and - 7.79 (- 14.91 to - 0.67) for Q2 vs. Q1 and Q4 vs. Q1 of propanaldehyde. No significant associations were observed between other aldehydes and sex hormones. In premenopausal women, isopentanaldehyde was inversely associated with serum total testosterone levels (Q4 vs. Q1: OR = - 7.95, 95% CI: - 15.62 to - 0.27), whereas propanaldehyde was positively associated with serum estradiol concentration (Q3 vs. Q1: β = 28.88, 95% CI: 0.83 to 56.94). Compared with Q1, Q3 of isopentanaldehyde was associated with 3.53 pg/mL higher concentration of estradiol in postmenopausal women (β = 3.53, 95% CI: 0.08 to 6.97). Moreover, in males under 40 years, butyraldehyde and heptanaldehyde were inversely proportional to total testosterone levels and heptanaldehyde and butyraldehyde were negatively associated with estradiol and SHBG. Decreased total testosterone, elevated estradiol, and decreased SHBG levels were found in higher quartiles of benzaldehyde, hexanaldehyde and isopentanaldehyde, and propanaldehyde, respectively, in males aged over 60 years. In male participants aged 40-60 years, only hexanaldehyde was observed to be correlated with higher serum estradiol levels. In conclusion, our current research presented the association between six serum aldehydes and sex hormones. Of note, stratification analyses were conducted in participants with different menopausal statuses and age among males and females. Sex- and age-specific effect of aldehyde exposure on alterations in sex hormone levels were observed. Further studies are warranted to confirm the causal relationship and explore the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
In the U.S. general population, there is a lack of understanding regarding the association between the systemic immune inflammation (SII) index and estimated pulse wave velocity (ePWV), atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), and triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and cardiovascular disease (CVD). As a result, the objective of our research was to investigate the association between the SII index and ePWV, AIP, and TyG index and incident CVD. We used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data from 1999 to 2018 to conduct this study. The correlation between the SII index and ePWV, AIP, and TyG index was examined using generalized additive models with smooth functions. In addition, the association between SII index and triglyceride (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and fast glucose (FBG) also were explored. Finally, we further performed multivariable logistic regression analysis, restricted cubic spline (RCS) plots, and subgroup analysis to study the connection between the SII index and CVD. Our analysis included 17389 subjects from the NHANES database. A substantial positive association existed between SII, WV, and the TyG index. In addition, with the increase of the SII index, AIP showed a trend of decreasing first, then rising, and then decreasing. The SII index was inversely and linearly associated with triglyceride (TG), while positively and linearly associated with fast glucose (FBG). However, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) had a tendency of first declining, then climbing, and finally falling with the rise in the SII index. After adjusting for potential confounders, compared with the lowest quartiles, the odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals for CVD across the quartiles were 0.914 (0.777, 1.074), 0.935 (0.779, 1.096), and 1.112 (0.956, 1.293) for SII index. The RCS plot showed an inverse U-shaped curve relationship between the SII index and CVD. Overall, this study found a strong correlation between a higher SII index and ePWV and the TyG index. Additionally, these cross-sectional data also revealed a U-shaped connection between the SII index and CVD.

Abstract
AIMS We aimed to investigate the association between residential greenness and MetS in older Chinese adults. METHODS Longitudinal data on sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle were collected from the Shenzhen Healthy Ageing Research (SHARE) cohort. Greenness exposure was assessed through satellite-derived Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values in the 250-m, 500-m, and 1250-m radius around the residential address for each participant. MetS was defined by standard guidelines for the Chinese population. RESULTS A total of 49,893 older Chinese adults with a mean age of 70.96 (SD = 5.26) years were included in the study. In the fully adjusted models, participants who lived in the highest quartile of NDVI250-m, NDVI500-m, and NDVI1250-m had a 15% (odds ratio, OR = 0.85, 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.80-0.90), 12% (OR = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.83-0.93), and 11% (OR = 0.89, 95% CI: 0.85-0.95) lower incidence of MetS, respectively, than those living in the lowest quartile (all p-trend < 0.01). Interactions and subgroup analyses showed that age, sex, smoking status, and drinking status were significant effect modifiers (p-interaction for all NDVI < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Residential greenness is associated with a lower risk of MetS in Chinese older adults, especially for young older adults, females, non-smokers, and non-drinkers.

Abstract
Objective Our research was designed to investigate the relationship between systemic immune inflammation (SII) index and all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer-related mortality in patients with CVD. Methods We used the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 1999 to 2018 to conduct this study. The association between SII index and all-cause, CVD, and cancer-related mortality in patients with CVD was examined using restricted cubic splines (RCS), Cox proportional hazard models, and subgroup analysis, respectively. CVD was defined as a composite of five outcomes of CVD, including coronary heart disease (CHD), congestive heart failure (CHF), angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Additionally, the link between SII index and all-cause, CVD, and cancer-related mortality in patients with a composite of five outcomes of CVD was also explored. Results In total, 5329 participants were included. The RCS also showed a U-curve correlation between SII index and the all-cause, CVD, and cancer-related mortality in patients with CVD. As compared with the individuals with lowest quartile of SII index, hazard ratios with 95% confidence intervals for all-cause, CVD, and cancer-related mortality across the quartiles were (1.202 (0.981, 1.474), 1.184 (0.967, 1.450), and 1.365 (1.115, 1.672)), (1.116 (0.815, 1.527), 1.017 (0.740, 1.398), and 1.220 (0.891, 1.670)), and (1.202 (0.981, 1.474), 1.184 (0.967, 1.450), and 1.365 (1.115, 1.672)), respectively, in the full-adjusted model. The SII index also had a U-shaped relationship with all-cause, CVD, and cancer-related mortality in patients with CHD, angina, and myocardial infarction. Additionally, the U-shaped relationship between SII index and all-cause, and cancer-related mortality also exists in CHF, and stroke. However, there was a positive linear correlation between SII index and CVD mortality in patients with CHF, and stroke. Conclusion In the United States general population, the correlation between SII index and all-cause, CVD, and cancer-related mortality showed a U-shaped curve in patients with CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well-documented that heavy metals are associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, there is few studies exploring effect of metal mixture on CVD. Therefore, the primary objective of present study was to investigate the joint effect of heavy metals on CVD and to identify the most influential metals in the mixture. METHODS Original data for study subjects were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In this study, adults with complete data on 12 kinds of urinary metals (antimony, arsenic, barium, cadmium, cobalt, cesium, molybdenum, mercury, lead, thallium, tungsten, and uranium), cardiovascular disease, and core covariates were enrolled. We applied five different statistical strategies to examine the CVD risk with metal exposure, including multivariate logistic regression, adaptive elastic net combined with Environmental Risk Score, Quantile g-computation, Weighted Quantile Sum regression, and Bayesian kernel machine regression. RESULTS Higher levels of cadmium, tungsten, cobalt, and antimony were significantly associated with Increased risk of CVD when covariates were adjusted for multivariate logistic regression. The results from multi-pollutant strategies all indicated that metal mixture was positively associated with the risk of CVD. Based on the results of multiple statistical strategies, it was determined that cadmium, tungsten, cobalt, and antimony exhibited the strongest positive correlations, whereas barium, lead, molybdenum, and thallium were most associated with negative correlations. CONCLUSION Overall, our study demonstrates that exposure to heavy metal mixture is linked to a higher risk of CVD. Meanwhile, this association may be driven primarily by cadmium, tungsten, cobalt, and antimony. Further prospective studies are warranted to validate or refute our primary findings as well as to identify other important heavy metals linked with CVD.

Abstract
Aldehydes, particularly acetaldehyde, are carcinogenic molecules and their concentrations in foodstuffs should be controlled to avoid upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) and liver cancers. Highly reactive, acetaldehyde forms DNA and protein adducts, impairing physiological functions and leading to the development of pathological conditions. The consumption of aged beer, outside of the ethanol metabolism, exposes habitual drinkers to this carcinogen, whose concentrations can be over-increased due to post-brewing chemical and biochemical reactions. Storage-related changes are a challenge faced by the brewing industry, impacting volatile compound formation and triggering flavor instability. Aldehydes are among the volatile compounds formed during beer aging, recognized as off-flavor compounds. To track and understand aldehyde formation through multiple pathways during beer storage, consequent changes in flavor but particularly quality losses and harmful compound formation, this systematic review reunited data on volatile compound profiles through gas chromatography analyses from 2011 to 2021. Conditions to avoid flavor instability and successful methods for reducing beer staling, and consequent acetaldehyde accumulation, were raised by exploring the dynamic conversion between free and bound-state aldehydes. Future research should focus on implementing sensory analyses to investigate whether adding aldehyde-binding agents, e.g., cysteine and bisulfite, would contribute to consumer acceptance, restore beer flavor, and minimize acetaldehyde-related health damage.

Abstract
PURPOSE The association between aldehyde exposure and bone health in humans remains unclear. This study was to evaluate the association of serum aldehydes with bone mineral density (BMD) and osteopenia/osteoporosis. METHODS We analyzed the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cross-sectional data from 2013 to 2014. Weighted multivariate-adjusted linear regression and logistic regression models were used to assess the association between specific aldehydes and osteopenia/osteoporosis. Associations between aldehyde combinations and BMD were also evaluated using the restricted cubic spline (RCS) method. RESULTS Compared with men in the first tertile, those in the third tertile of propanaldehyde concentration were negatively associated with proximal femur and lumbar spine BMD. Significant inverse associations were observed between benzaldehyde exposure and trochanter BMD in women. Benzaldehyde increased the risk of osteopenia/osteoporosis 2.75-fold [95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.06, 7.11] in the highest tertile in women compared to the lowest tertile concentration. In males, the prevalence of total femur, femur neck, and trochanter osteopenia/osteoporosis was significantly higher in the highest versus the lowest tertile of propanaldehyde exposure, with odds ratios (ORs) of 6.84 (95% CI = 2.33, 20.04), 2.72 (95% CI = 1.18, 6.27), and 3.26 (95% CI = 1.25, 8.56), respectively. RCS regression also showed decreased BMD continuously with increasing serum mixed aldehyde levels. CONCLUSIONS Serum aldehyde concentrations were associated with low BMD and high osteopenia/osteoporosis risk in adults, with propanaldehyde and benzaldehyde being the most critical. Co-exposure to aldehyde combinations was negatively correlated with BMD.

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the relationship between waist circumference and hypertension risk in normal‐weight/overweight individuals with normal cardiometabolic profiles. The authors included 7217 normal‐weight and overweight individuals with normal cardiometabolic profiles from the 2001 to 2014 US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The authors summarized demographic characteristics, cardiometabolic profiles, and behavioral factors across waist circumference quartiles. Then, in the logistic regression analysis, the authors observed a positive and significant association between waist circumference (as a continuous variable) and the prevalence of hypertension in all three models (nonadjusted, minimally adjusted, and fully adjusted), with odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 1.76 (1.65–1.86), 1.29 (1.20–1.39), and 1.24 (1.09–1.40), respectively. When analyzed as a categorical variable, individuals in the highest waist circumference group had a 1.48‐fold increased risk of hypertension than the lowest group in the fully adjusted model. Moreover, the Cox regression analysis revealed a positive and significant association between waist circumference and all‐cause mortality in individuals with hypertension in the nonadjusted model (HR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.10–1.47) and the fully adjusted model (HR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.22–2.06). In conclusions, our results showed that, even in those with normal metabolic profiles, high waist circumference was significantly associated with the increased prevalence of hypertension. And once hypertension has been established, patients with high waist circumference showed elevated all‐cause mortality. Therefore, waist circumference should be routinely measured and controlled regardless of metabolic profiles.

Abstract
Background While the relationship between blood pressure and blood lead has been studied more extensively, the effect of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) concentration on this relationship remains uncertain. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of HDL concentration on the relationship between blood lead and blood pressure. Methods The research used cross-sectional data from the 2005 to 2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included 16,451 participants aged 20–60 years. Multivariable linear regression was used to evaluate the correlation among blood lead, systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP). HDL concentration was determined by low HDL concentration (≤ 49 mg/dl) and high HDL concentration (>49 mg/dl) stratified. The effect of HDL concentration was assessed by an interaction test between blood lead and SBP in multivariable linear regression. Results In this cross-sectional research, we identified a positive correlation between blood lead and SBP, but not DBP. The relationship between blood lead and SBP was different in the group with low and high HDL concentrations (β: 0.21 95% Cl:−0.05-0.46 vs. β:0.47 95% Cl: 0.15-0.79). In addition, high HDL significantly altered the positive correlation between blood lead and SBP (P-value of interaction < 0.001). Conclusion The study suggests an interaction between HDL and blood lead in elevating SBP, which may have important clinical implications.

Abstract
Aldehydes have been shown to be potentially carcinogenic, mutagenic, and cardiotoxic to humans. Dietary fiber reduces exposure to certain environmental pollutants and has been widely used to improve various metabolic disorders. However, the effects of dietary fiber on serum concentrations of aldehydes remain unexplored. Data was collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013-2014. Generalized linear regression and restricted cubic spline models were performed to elucidate the association of dietary fiber intake with the serum concentration of aldehydes. After fully adjusting for age, sex, education level, race, smoking status, alcohol use, diabetes, hypertension, body mass index, energy intake, poverty-income ratio, and physical activity, dietary fiber intake had a strong negative association with serum levels of isopentanaldehyde and propanaldehyde and a positive association with serum levels of benzaldehyde. The estimated increases in the mean log2-unit (ng/mL) of aldehydes for each fold increase in dietary fiber were -0.140 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.195 to -0.085) for isopentanaldehyde, -0.060 (95% CI: -0.099 to -0.015) for propanaldehyde, and 0.084 (95% CI: 0.017 to 0.150) for benzaldehyde, respectively. No significant association was observed between dietary fiber intake and the concentration of any other aldehydes. These results demonstrate that dietary fiber reduces the concentration of certain aldehydes in serum.

Abstract
Background Exposure to ambient pollutants and chemicals were found to be associated with increased risk of hypertension. However, the relationship between the increased aldehyde exposure and hypertension are still unclear. This study aimed to investigate the potential associations of serum aldehydes levels with prevalent hypertension. Methods A total of 1,733 U.S. adults with data on hypertension outcome and serum aldehydes measurement from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013–2014 were included. The serum levels of aldehydes were measured via an automated analytical method using solid phase microextraction gas chromatography and high-resolution mass spectrometry. Multivariate logistic regression models were adopted to assess the associations between six selected aldehydes exposure (benzaldehyde, butyraldehyde, heptanaldehyde, hexanaldehyde, isopentanaldehyde, and propanaldehyde) and prevalence of hypertension. Results The mean age was 48.0 ± 16.7 years and an approximately equivalent of sex distribution was observed (female 49.9%). There seems to be a numerically higher level of hexanaldehyde in participants with hypertension when compared to participants without hypertension (2.6 ± 3.9 ng/mL vs. 2.3 ± 1.1 ng/mL). After adjusting for potential confounders, the odds ratio (OR) for hypertension was 2.15 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.33–3.51] in participants from the highest quartile of serum hexanaldehyde concentration in comparison to those from the lowest quartile. Subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses showed generally similar results. Conclusion In summary, current evidence suggested that increased serum hexanaldehyde level was positively associated with prevalent hypertension in U.S. adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association of mixed aldehydes exposure with diabetes remains unclear. OBJECTIVE We aimed to explore associations between serum aldehydes concentration and diabetes. METHODS We analyzed associations between aldehydes and diabetes using data from 1795 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2013 to 2014 by multiple logistic regression models. Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) was used to evaluate the combined association of serum aldehydes on prediabetes and diabetes. RESULTS Isopentanaldehyde increased the risk of diabetes 2.09 fold (95%CI:1.05-4.16) in the highest tertile, compared to the lowest-tertile concentration after adjusting for covariates, with a p-value for trend (P-t) equal to 0.041, in females. The adjusted OR of prediabetes with a 95% CI for the highest tertile was 0.52(0.28, 0.97) for benzaldehyde in females (P-t = 0.034). We also found associations in the male group between butyraldehyde and diabetes for the second (OR:2.80, 95%CI:1.35-5.79) and third (OR:2.59, 95%CI:1.30-5.17) tertile levels (P-t = 0.010). The risk of diabetes increased 2.55 fold (95%CI: 1.26-5.16, P-t = 0.008), in subjects in the highest tertile of hexanaldehyde concentration. Other aldehydes did not show a statistically significant association with diabetes or prediabetes. The BKMR model showed a positive association of mixed aldehydes with diabetes in males, and butyraldehyde showed a significant positive trend with the highest posterior inclusion probability (PIP = 0.85). Mixed aldehydes increased female's risk from prediabetes to diabetes in which isopentanaldehyde had the highest posterior inclusion probability (PIP = 0.67). CONCLUSIONS The mixed aldehydes might increase the risk of suffering from diabetes in males and accelerate the progression of diabetes in females, in which butyraldehyde and isopentanaldehyde play the most important roles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM We aimed to explore the relationship between total BMD and prevalent fractures and the risk of CVD in a female population in the United States (US). METHODS AND RESULTS We undertook cross-sectional analyses of a female population participating in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Generalized linear models and restricted cubic spline curves were used to examine the association between total BMD and CVD. Subgroup analyses were also undertaken. A total of 13,707 women were enrolled. The restricted cubic spline curve revealed a linear and negative association between total BMD and CVD. The inflection point for the curve was identified at total BMD = 1.085 g/cm2. A negative relationship between total BMD and the prevalence of individual CVDs (angina and stroke) was noted (P < 0.05). In subgroup analyses stratified by race/ethnicity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and physical activity, a negative association existed in women who were non-Hispanic White, without hypertension, without diabetes mellitus, and who never participated in physical activity, respectively. In subgroup analyses stratified by age, this association also differed based on age. In addition, participants without history of fracture had significant lower probability of experiencing individual CVDs (angina pectoris, heart attack, and stroke) compared with those with history of fracture. CONCLUSIONS We revealed a reduced prevalence of CVD associated with increased total BMD in a female population in the US. CVD risk decreased significantly if total BMD >1.085 g/cm2. Additionally, fracture-free individuals had much reduced odds of developing CVD.

Abstract
Aims: This study aimed to investigate the association between waist circumference and the prevalence of (pre) hypertension. Methods: Cross-sectional data from the 2007–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. The historical trend of abdominal obesity was assessed by the Cochran–Armitage trend test. After preprocessed by the multiple imputation strategy, we used generalized additive models to assess the association of waist circumference with systolic/diastolic blood pressure and performed correlation analysis by the Spearman correlation coefficient. Moreover, we used multivariable logistic regression (non-adjusted, minimally adjusted, and fully adjusted models), restricted cubic spline, and sensitivity analysis to investigate the association between waist circumference and (pre) hypertension. Results: A total of 27,894 participants were included in this study. In the fully adjusted model, waist circumference was positively associated with (pre) hypertension with odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 1.28 (1.18–1.40) in the young group and 1.23 (1.15–1.33) in the old group. Restricted cubic spline showed a higher prevalence of (pre) hypertension with the increase of waist circumference. In the subgroup analysis, waist circumference showed a robust trend across all BMI categories with odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 3.33 (1.29–8.85), 1.35 (1.17–1.57), 1.27 (1.13–1.41), and 1.09 (1.01–1.17) in underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese individuals, respectively. Conclusion: This study highlighted waist circumference as a significant biomarker to evaluate the risk of (pre) hypertension. Our results supported the measure of waist circumference regardless of BMI when evaluating the cardiometabolic risk related to fat distribution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have confirmed an association between C-peptide levels with the risk of cardiometabolic diseases. However, whether circulating C-peptide was related to subclinical myocardial injury (SC-MI) remains unknown. METHODS A total of 3,752 participants without a history of cardiovascular diseases were included in our study from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III (NHANES III). Multivariable linear regression was performed to explore the correlation between C-peptide and cardiac injury score (CIIS). Multivariate logistic regression was used to examine the association between C-peptide quartile and SC-MI. RESULTS Circulating C-peptide was significantly associated with CIIS (β:0.09, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.00-0.17; p = 0.041). Compared with the lowest quartile, the highest quartile of circulating C-peptide increased a 1.48-fold risk of SC-MI (Odds ratio = 1.66, 95% CI: 1.18-1.87; p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS The level of C-peptide was independently associated with CIIS and SC-MI, which could serve as a new risk factor of SC-MI.
