Roadmap of environmental health research on emerging contaminants: Inspiration from the studies on engineered nanomaterials

Emerging contaminants: A One Health perspective

Environmental pollution is escalating due to rapid global development that often prioritizes human needs over planetary health. Despite global efforts to mitigate legacy pollutants, the continuous introduction of new substances remains a major threat to both people and the planet. In response, global initiatives are focusing on risk assessment and regulation of emerging contaminants, as demonstrated by the ongoing efforts to establish the UN's Intergovernmental Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution Prevention. This review identifies the sources and impacts of emerging contaminants on planetary health, emphasizing the importance of adopting a One Health approach. Strategies for monitoring and addressing these pollutants are discussed, underscoring the need for robust and socially equitable environmental policies at both regional and international levels. Urgent actions are needed to transition toward sustainable pollution management practices to safeguard our planet for future generations.

Exploring Sustainable Agriculture with Nitrogen-Fixing Cyanobacteria and Nanotechnology

The symbiotic relationship between nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and plants offers a promising avenue for sustainable agricultural practices and environmental remediation. This review paper explores the molecular interactions between nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and nanoparticles, shedding light on their potential synergies in agricultural nanotechnology. Delving into the evolutionary history and specialized adaptations of cyanobacteria, this paper highlights their pivotal role in fixing atmospheric nitrogen, which is crucial for ecosystem productivity. The review discusses the unique characteristics of metal nanoparticles and their emerging applications in agriculture, including improved nutrient delivery, stress tolerance, and disease resistance. It delves into the complex mechanisms of nanoparticle entry into plant cells, intracellular transport, and localization, uncovering the impact on root-shoot translocation and systemic distribution. Furthermore, the paper elucidates cellular responses to nanoparticle exposure, emphasizing oxidative stress, signaling pathways, and enhanced nutrient uptake. The potential of metal nanoparticles as carriers of essential nutrients and their implications for nutrient-use efficiency and crop yield are also explored. Insights into the modulation of plant stress responses, disease resistance, and phytoremediation strategies demonstrate the multifaceted benefits of nanoparticles in agriculture. Current trends, prospects, and challenges in agricultural nanotechnology are discussed, underscoring the need for responsible and safe nanoparticle utilization. By harnessing the power of nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria and leveraging the unique attributes of nanoparticles, this review paves the way for innovative, sustainable, and efficient agricultural practices.

Freshwater water quality criteria for phthalate esters and recommendations for the revision of the water quality standards

With increasing urbanization and rapid industrialization, more and more environmental problems have arisen. Phthalates (PAEs) are the foremost and most widespread plasticizers and are readily emitted from these manufactured products into the environment. PAEs act as endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and can have serious impacts on aquatic organisms as well as human health. In this study, the water quality criteria (WQC) of five PAEs (dimethyl phthalate (DMP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP)) for freshwater aquatic organisms were developed using a species sensitivity distribution (SSD) and a toxicity percentage ranking (TPR) approach. The results showed that long-term water quality criteria (LWQC) of PAEs using the SSD method could be 13.7, 11.1, 2.8, 7.8, and 0.53 μg/L, respectively. Criteria continuous concentrations (CCC) of PAEs were derived using the TPR method and determined to be 28.4, 13.1, 1.3, 2.5, and 1.6 μg/L, respectively. The five PAEs are commonly measured in China surface waters at concentrations between ng/L and μg/L. DBP, DEHP, and di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) were the most frequently detected PAEs, with occurrence rates ranging from 67% to 100%. The ecological risk assessment results of PAEs showed a decreasing order of risk at the national level, DEHP, DBP, DMP, DEP, DnOP. The results of this study will be of great benefit to China and other countries in revising water quality standards for the conservation of aquatic species.

Molecular mechanism of dissolvable metal nanoparticles-enhanced CO2 fixation by algae: Metal-chlorophyll synthesis

Algae-driven photosynthetic CO2 fixation is a promising strategy to mitigate global climate changes and energy crises. Yet, the presence of metal nanoparticles (NPs), particularly dissolvable NPs, in aquatic ecosystems introduces new complexities due to their tendency to release metal ions that may perturb metabolic processes related to algal CO2 fixation. This study selected six representative metal NPs (Fe3O4, ZnO, CuO, NiO, MgO, and Ag) to investigate their impacts on CO2 fixation by algae (Chlorella vulgaris). We discovered an intriguing phenomenon that bivalent metal ions released from the metal NPs, especially from ZnO NPs, substituted Mg2+ within the porphyrin ring. This interaction led to 81.8% and 76.1% increases in Zinc-chlorophyll and Magnesium-chlorophyll contents within algal cells at 0.01 mM ZnO NPs, respectively. Integrating metabolomics and transcriptomics analyses revealed that ZnO NPs mainly promoted the photosynthesis-antenna protein pathway, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, and carbon fixation pathway, thereby mitigating the adverse effects of Zn2+ substitution in light harvesting and energy transfer for CO2 fixation. Ultimately, the genes encoding Rubisco large subunit (rbcL) responsible for CO2 fixation were upregulated to 2.60-fold, resulting in a 76.3% increase in carbon fixation capacity. Similar upregulations of rbcL expression (1.13-fold) and carbon fixation capacity (76.1%) were observed in algal cells even at 0.001 mM ZnO NPs, accompanied by valuable lipid accumulation. This study offers novel insights into the molecular mechanism underlying NPs on CO2 fixation by algae and potentially introduces strategies for global carbon sequestration.

Nano-CeO2 activates physical and chemical defenses of garlic (Allium sativum L.) for reducing antibiotic resistance genes in plant endosphere

The transmission of manure- and wastewater-borne antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) to plants contributes to the proliferation of antimicrobial resistance in agriculture, necessitating effective strategies for preventing the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) from ARB in the environment to humans. Nanomaterials are potential candidates for efficiently controlling the dissemination of ARGs. The present study investigated the abundance of ARGs in hydroponically grown garlic (Allium sativum L.) following nano-CeO2 (nCeO2) application. Specifically, root exposure to nCeO2 (1, 2.5, 5, 10 mg L-1, 18 days) reduced ARG abundance in the endosphere of bulbs and leaves. The accumulation of ARGs (cat, tet, and aph(3')-Ia) in garlic bulbs decreased by 24.2-32.5 % after nCeO2 exposure at 10 mg L-1. Notably, the lignification extent of garlic stem-disc was enhanced by 10 mg L-1 nCeO2, thereby accelerating the formation of an apoplastic barrier to impede the upward transfer of ARG-harboring bacteria to garlic bulbs. Besides, nCeO2 upregulated the gene expression related to alliin biosynthesis and increased allicin content by 15.9-16.2 %, promoting a potent antimicrobial defense for reducing ARG-harboring bacteria. The potential exposure risks associated with ARGs and Ce were evaluated according to the estimated daily intake (EDI). The EDI of ARGs exhibited a decrease exceeding 95 %, while the EDI of Ce remained below the estimated oral reference dose. Consequently, through stimulating physical and chemical defenses, nCeO2 contributed to a reduced EDI of ARGs and Ce, highlighting its potential for controlling ARGs in plant endosphere within the framework of nano-enabled agrotechnology.

Assessing the ecological impact of pesticides/herbicides on algal communities: A comprehensive review

The escalating use of pesticides in agriculture for enhanced crop productivity threatens aquatic ecosystems, jeopardizing environmental integrity and human well-being. Pesticides infiltrate water bodies through runoff, chemical spills, and leachate, adversely affecting algae, vital primary producers in marine ecosystems. The repercussions cascade through higher trophic levels, underscoring the need for a comprehensive understanding of the interplay between pesticides, algae, and the broader ecosystem. Algae, susceptible to pesticides via spillage, runoff, and drift, experience disruptions in community structure and function, with certain species metabolizing and bioaccumulating these contaminants. The toxicological mechanisms vary based on the specific pesticide and algal species involved, particularly evident in herbicides' interference with photosynthetic activity in algae. Despite advancements, gaps persist in comprehending the precise toxic effects and mechanisms affecting algae and non-target species. This review consolidates information on the exposure and toxicity of diverse pesticides and herbicides to aquatic algae, elucidating underlying mechanisms. An emphasis is placed on the complex interactions between pesticides/herbicides, nutrient content, and their toxic effects on algae and microbial species. The variability in the harmful impact of a single pesticide across different algae species underscores the necessity for further research. A holistic approach considering these interactions is imperative to enhance predictions of pesticide effects in marine ecosystems. Continued research in this realm is crucial for a nuanced understanding of the repercussions of pesticides and herbicides on aquatic ecosystems, mainly algae.

Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Dots Facilitate CRISPR/Cas for Reducing Antibiotic Resistance Genes in the Environment

The continued acquisition and propagation of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the environment confound efforts to manage the global rise in antibiotic resistance. Here, CRISPR-Cas9/sgRNAs carried by nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) were developed to precisely target multi-"high-risk" ARGs (tet, cat, and aph(3')-Ia) commonly detected in the environment. NCDs facilitated the delivery of Cas9/sgRNAs to Escherichia coli (E. coli) without cytotoxicity, achieving sustained elimination of target ARGs. The elimination was optimized using different weight ratios of NCDs and Cas9 protein (1:1, 1:20, and 1:40), and Cas9/multi sgRNAs were designed to achieve multi-cleavage of ARGs in either a single strain or mixed populations. Importantly, NCDs successfully facilitated Cas9/multi sgRNAs for resensitization of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in soil (approaching 50%), whereas Cas9/multi sgRNAs alone were inactivated in the complex environment. This work highlights the potential of a fast and precise strategy to minimize the reservoir of antibiotic resistance in agricultural system.

A contrast of emerging contaminants rac- and l-menthol toxicities to Microcystis aeruginosa through biochemical, physiological, and morphological investigations

Fragrances rac- and l-menthol extracted from peppermint are widely used and considered as emerging contaminants recently, which are persistent in the environment. Menthol has always been considered as a safe chemical for humans, but its potential adverse ecological effects on aquatic organisms and the toxic mechanisms have not yet been fully understood. The present study aims to investigate the physiological response of Microcystis aeruginosa after exposure to the two menthol isomers, and to explore the toxic mechanisms and ecological risks of these two chemicals. Results showed that rac-menthol exhibited a hormesis effect on the cell growth, chlorophyll a and protein contents; while l-menthol showed an inhibition effect. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) content increased significantly at day 3 and then decreased markedly at day 6 after exposure to the two chemicals. Compared with rac-menthol, l-menthol can cause damage to the antioxidant system and plasmalemma more severely, promote the production and release of microcystins-LR (MC-LR) more dramatically, upregulate the expression of MC-transportation-related gene mcyH, and induce higher apoptosis rates. Overall results revealed that the toxic effects of l-menthol on cyanobacteria were significantly greater than those of rac-menthol. The significant increase in the malondialdehyde (MDA) content and the ultrastructural characteristics of the cells indicated that the plasma membranes were damaged. Thus, further attention should be paid to the scientific use, ecological and environmental risk assessment of chiral menthol. This study will also provide a scientific basis for future water quality criteria establishment on emerging contaminants such as fragrances.

Efficient Decomposition of Perfluoroalkyl Substances by Low Concentration Indole: New Insights into the Molecular Mechanisms

Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of persistent organic pollutants known as "forever chemicals". Currently, the hydrated electron-based advanced reduction process (ARP) holds promise for the elimination of PFAS. However, the efficiency of ARP is often challenged by an oxygen-rich environment, resulting in the consumption of hydrated electron source materials in exchange for the high PFAS decomposition efficiency. Herein, we developed a ternary system constructed by indole and isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and the addition of IPA significantly enhanced the PFOA degradation and defluorination efficiency in the presence of low-concentration indole (<0.4 mM). Meanwhile, opposite results were obtained with a higher amount of indole (>0.4 mM). Further exploring the molecular mechanism of the reaction system, the addition of IPA played two roles. On one hand, IPA built an anaerobic reaction atmosphere and improved the yield and utilization efficiency of hydrated electrons with a low concentration of indole. On the other hand, IPA suppressed the attraction between indole and PFOA, thus reducing the hydrated electron transfer efficiency, especially with more indole. In general, the indole/PFAS/IPA system significantly improved the PFAS destruction efficiency with a small amount of hydrated electron donors, which provided new insights for development of simple and efficient techniques for the treatment of PFAS-contaminated wastewater.

Nanoplastics induce neuroexcitatory symptoms in zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae through a manner contrary to Parkinsonian's way in proteomics

Although nanoplastics (NPs) can penetrate the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in the brain, the neurotoxicity of these particles and the mechanisms associated with their unique physio-chemical properties have yet to be sufficiently ascertained. In this study, we assessed the neuroexcitatory symptoms of zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae treated with polystyrene (PS) NPs based on an examination of locomotory behaviour, dopamine levels, and acetylcholinesterase activity. We found that PS NPs caused oxidative stress and inhibited atoh1a expression in the cerebellum of Tg(atoh1a:dTomato) transgenic zebrafish larvae, thereby indicating damage to the central nervous system. In contrast to the Parkinson's disease (PD) like effects induced by most types of nanoparticles, such as graphene oxide, we established that PS NPs influenced the neuronal proteomic profiles of zebrafish larvae in a manner contrary to the molecular pathways characteristic of PD-like effects, which could be explained by the molecular dynamic simulation. Unlike graphene oxide nanoparticles that promote significant change in the internal structure of neuroproteins, the complex macromolecular polymers of PS NPs promoted the coalescence and increased expression of neuroproteins, thereby plausibly contributing to the neuroexcitatory symptoms observed in treated zebrafish larvae. Consequently, compared with traditional nanoparticles, we believe that the unique physio-chemical properties of NPs could be a potential factor contributing to their toxicity.

Nanoparticles of the Perovskite-Structure CaTiO3 System: The Synthesis, Characterization, and Evaluation of Its Photocatalytic Capacity to Degrade Emerging Pollutants

In this research work, the photocatalytic capacity shown by the nanoparticles of the CaTiO3 system was evaluated to degrade two pollutants of emerging concern, namely methyl orange (MO)-considered an organic contaminating substance of the textile industry that is non-biodegradable when dissolved in water-and levofloxacin (LVF), an antibiotic widely used in the treatment of infectious diseases that is released mostly to the environment in its original chemical form. The synthesis process used to obtain these powders was the polymeric precursor method (Pechini), at a temperature of 700 °C for 6 h. The characterization of the obtained oxide nanoparticles of interest revealed the presence of a majority perovskite-type phase with an orthorhombic Pbnm structure and a minority rutile-type TiO2 phase, with a P42/mnm structure and a primary particle size <100nm. The adsorption-desorption isotherms of the synthesized solids had H3-type hysteresis loops, characteristic of mesoporous solids, with a BET surface area of 10.01m2/g. The Raman and FTIR spectroscopy results made it possible to identify the characteristic vibrations of the synthesized system and the characteristic deformations of the perovskite structure, reiterating the results obtained from the XRD analysis. Furthermore, a bandgap energy of ~3.4eV and characteristic emissions in the violet (437 nm/2.8 eV) and orange (611 nm/2.03 eV) were determined for excitation lengths of 250 nm and 325 nm, respectively, showing that these systems have a strong emission in the visible light region and allowing their use in photocatalytic activity to be potentialized. The powders obtained were studied for their photocatalytic capacity to degrade methyl orange (MO) and levofloxacin (LVF), dissolved in water. To quantify the coloring concentration, UV-visible spectroscopy was used considering the variation in the intensity of the characteristic of the greatest absorption, which correlated with the change in the concentration of the contaminant in the solution. The results showed that after irradiation with ultraviolet light, the degradation of the contaminants MO and LVF was 79.4% and 98.1% with concentrations of 5 g/L and 10 g/L, respectively.

Componential and molecular-weight-dependent effects of natural organic matter on the colloidal behavior, transformation, and toxicity of MoS2 nanoflakes

The potential widespread applications in water processing have rendered the necessity for investigations of the fate and hazard of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets. Herein, it was found that humic acid (HA) had better performances toward stabilizing pure 2H phase MoS2 and chemical-exfoliated MoS2 (ce-MoS2) in electrolyte solutions than fulvic acid (FA), and molecular weight (MW)-dependent manners were disclosed due to steric repulsions. Compared with darkness, the extent to which the aggregation and sedimentation of ce-MoS2 facilitated by visible light irradiation was greater in the presence of HA and FA fractions, likely due to the introduction of stronger plasmonic dipole-dipole interaction and Van der Waals attraction forces. HA-triggered structural disintegration of nanosheets was performed after irradiation and it was observed to be more significant with the increase in MWs, whereas the MW-dependent dissolution of MoS2 caused by FA was much quicker than that by HA owing to the higher generation of singlet oxygen. Moreover, FA lowered the bioavailability of MoS2 and relieved its toxicity to zebrafish more effectively than HA. Our findings boost the insights into the effects of organic molecules on the fates and hazards of MoS2, providing guidance for the MoS2-based nanotechnological development on environment.

Co-exposure of environmental contaminants with unfavorable temperature or humidity/moisture: Joint hazards and underlying mechanisms

In the context of global climate change, organisms in their natural habitats usually suffer from unfavorable climatic conditions together with environmental pollution. Temperature and humidity (or moisture) are two central climatic factors, while their relationships with the toxicity of contaminants are not well understood. This review provides a synthesis of existing knowledge on important interactions between contaminant toxicity and climatic conditions of unfavorable temperature, soil moisture, and air humidity. Both high temperature and low moisture can extensively pose severe combined hazards with organic pollutants, heavy metal ions, nanoparticles, or microplastics. There is more information on the combined effects on animalia than on other kingdoms. Prevalent mechanisms underlying their joint effects include the increased bioavailability and bioaccumulation of contaminants, modified biotransformation of contaminants, enhanced induction of oxidative stress, accelerated energy consumption, interference with cell membranes, and depletion of bodily fluids. However, the interactions of contaminants with low temperature or high humidity/moisture, particularly on plants and microorganisms, are relatively vague and need to be further revealed. This work emphasizes that the co-exposure of chemical and physical stressors results in detrimental effects generally greater than those caused by either stressor. It is necessary to take this into consideration in the ecological risk assessment of both environmental contamination and climate change.

Extracellular polymeric substances altered the physicochemical properties of molybdenum disulfide nanomaterials to mitigate its toxicity to Chlorella vulgaris

Although the toxic effects of two-dimensional nanomaterials (2D-NMs) have been widely reported, the influence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on the environmental fate and risk of 2D-NMs in aquatic environments is largely unknown, and the processes and mechanisms involved remain to be revealed. Herein, we investigated the impact of EPS secreted by microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris)) on the environmental transformation and risk of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). We found that the attachment of EPS increased the thickness of MoS2 (from 2 nm to 5 nm), changed it from a monolayer sheet to a fuzzy multilayer structure, and promoted the formation of defects on MoS2. The blue-shift of the peak associated with the plasmon resonances in the 1 T phase and the generation of electron-hole pairs suggested that EPS altered the surface electronic structure of MoS2. EPS interacted mainly with the S atoms on the 1 T phase, and the attachment of EPS promoted the oxidation of MoS2. The reduction in hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) and the decrease in zeta potential indicated that EPS inhibited the agglomeration behavior of MoS2 and enhanced its dispersion and stability in aqueous media. Notably, EPS reduced the generation of free radicals (superoxide anion (•O2-), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH-)). Furthermore, EPS mitigated the toxicity of MoS2 to C. vulgaris, such as attenuated reduction in biomass and chlorophyll content. Compared to pristine MoS2, MoS2 + BG11 + EPS exhibited weaker oxidative stress, membrane damage and lipid peroxidation. The adsorption of EPS on MoS2 surface reduced the attachment sites of MoS2, making MoS2 less likely to be enriched on the cell surface. The findings have significant contribution for understanding the interactions between EPS and MoS2 in aquatic ecosystems, providing scientific guidance for risk assessment of 2D-NMs.

Interactions between white and black carbon in water: A case study of concurrent aging of microplastics and biochar

Microplastics and biochar, as particulate matter that is prevalent in the water environment, will inevitably encounter and interact with each other during environmental aging. The potential interaction of microplastics and biochar, and the associated impact on their environmental behavior remains largely unknown. In this study, we exposed microplastics and biochar concurrently to ultraviolet light to mimic the aging process, investigated the release and fluorescence characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water, and analyzed the effects of co-existing microplastics and biochar on their sorption of organic contaminants. We demonstrate that early-stage interactions of microplastics and biochar could entangle to promote the release of DOM from biochar, while their long-term interactions after light irradiation resulted in the sorption of hydrophobic and small molecules of microbial byproduct-like DOM. Simultaneously, early-stage interactions of microplastics and biochar showed a promotion for sorption of organic contaminants with an increase of 5.3-17.7%. After aging, however, long-term interactions between microplastics and biochar made it no longer promote the sorption of organic contaminants due to the influence of heterogeneous aggregation. Our results provide new insights into the time-dependent interactions between microplastics and biochar and highlight the need to incorporate their interactions into future environmental risk assessments for microplastics in the water environment.

Membrane processes for environmental remediation of nanomaterials: Potentials and challenges

Nanomaterials have gained huge attention with their wide range of applications. This is mainly driven by their unique properties. Nanomaterials include nanoparticles, nanotubes, nanofibers, and many other nanoscale structures have been widely assessed for improving the performance in different applications. However, with the wide implementation and utilization of nanomaterials, another challenge is being present when these materials end up in the environment, i.e. air, water, and soil. Environmental remediation of nanomaterials has recently gained attention and is concerned with removing nanomaterials from the environment. Membrane filtration processes have been widely considered a very efficient tool for the environmental remediation of different pollutants. Membranes with their different operating principles from size exclusions as in microfiltration, to ionic exclusion as in reverse osmosis, provide an effective tool for the removal of different types of nanomaterials. This work comprehends, summarizes, and critically discusses the different approaches for the environmental remediation of engineered nanomaterials using membrane filtration processes. Microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), and nanofiltration (NF) have been shown to effectively remove nanomaterials from the air and aqueous environments. In MF, the adsorption of nanomaterials to membrane material was found to be the main removal mechanism. While in UF and NF, the main mechanism was size exclusion. Membrane fouling, hence requiring proper cleaning or replacement was found to be the major challenge for UF and NF processes. While limited adsorption capacity of nanomaterial along with desorption was found to be the main challenges for MF.

Green synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles using zucchini peel extract for cytotoxic and photocatalytic properties

The aim of this study is the green synthesis of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO₂-NPs) using a natural capping agent and its application in water and wastewater treatment. This study presents the biosynthesis of CeO₂-NPs by the exertion of a green method using zucchini (Cucurbita pepo) extract as a capping agent. Synthesized CeO₂-NPs were distinguished through TGA/DTA, FT-IR, XRD, FESEM/TEM and EDX/PSA, and DRS procedures. According to the XRD pattern of NPs, the crystallinity structure was a face-centered cubic (fcc) with an Fm3m space group and the size was estimated at 30 nm. The spherical morphology of NPs was confirmed through FESEM/TEM images. In the following, the photocatalytic property of NPs was investigated by the decolorization of methylene blue (MB) dye within UV-A light. Also, the cytotoxicity of NPs on the CT26 cell line was evaluated through the MTT test, and no toxicity was observed in the results, which indicates their biocompatibility.

Curcumin-stabilized silver nanoparticles encapsulated in biocompatible electrospun nanofibrous scaffold for sustained eradication of drug-resistant bacteria

Due to the misuse of antibiotics, the emerging drug-resistance of pathogenic microbes has aroused considerable concerns for the public health, which demands the continuous search for safe and efficient antimicrobial treatment. In this study, curcumin reduced and stabilized silver nanoparticles (C-Ag NPs) were successfully encapsulated into electrospun nanofiber membranes consisted of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) cross-linked by citric acids (CA), which exhibited desirable biocompatibility and broad-spectrum antimicrobial activities. The homogeneously distributed and sustained release of C-Ag NPs in the constructed nanofibrous scaffolds yield prominent killing effect against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which involved the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation. Outstanding elimination of bacterial biofilms and excellent antifungal activity against Candida albicans was also identified after treated with PVA/CA/C-Ag. Transcriptomic analysis on MRSA treated by PVA/CA/C-Ag revealed the antibacterial process is related to disrupting carbohydrate and energy metabolism, as well as destroying bacterial membranes. Significant down-regulation of the expression of multidrug-resistant efflux pump gene sdrM was observed pointing to the role of PVA/CA/C-Ag to overcome the bacterial resistance. Therefore, the constructed ecofriendly and biocompatible nanofibrous scaffolds provide a robust and versatile nanoplatform of reversal potential to eradicate drug-resistant pathogenic microbe in environmental as well as healthcare applications.

Photochemical degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid under UV irradiation in the presence of Fe (III)-saturated montmorillonite

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) has attracted worldwide attention owing to its widespread distribution and potential ecological risks. Developing low-cost, green-chemical and highly efficient treatment approaches is significant for treating PFOA caused environmental issues. Herein, we propose a feasible PFOA degradation strategy under UV irradiation by adding Fe (III)-saturated montmorillonite (Fe-MMT), and the Fe-MMT could be regenerated after reaction. In our system consisting of 1 g L^-1 Fe-MMT and 24 μM PFOA, nearly 90 % initial PFOA could be decomposed within 48 h. The enhanced PFOA decomposition could be explained by the ligand-to-metal charge transfer mechanism based on the generated reactive oxygen species (ROSs) and the transformation of iron species in the MMT layers. Moreover, the special PFOA degradation pathway was revealed according to the intermediate identification and the density functional theory calculation. Further experiments demonstrated that even in the presence of co-existing natural organic natter (NOM) and inorganic ions, efficient PFOA removal could still be obtained in UV/Fe-MMT system. This study offers a green-chemical strategy for PFOA removal from contaminated waters.

The efficiency of full-scale subsurface constructed wetlands with high hydraulic loading rates in removing pharmaceutical and personal care products from secondary effluent

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are usually operated at low hydraulic load rates (HLRs) of < 0.5 m³/m²/d, and can efficiently remove pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) from wastewaters. They however often occupy a large area of land, especially when treating the secondary effluent from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in megacities. High-load CWs (HCWs) with an HLR ≥ 1 m³/m²/d, requiring smaller land areas, are a good option for urban areas. However, their performance for PPCP removal is not clear. In this study, we evaluated the performance of three full-scale HCWs (HLR: 1.0-1.3 m³/m²/d) to remove 60 PPCPs, and found they had a stable removal performance and a higher areal removal capacity than the previously reported CWs operated at low HLRs. We verified the advantages of HCWs by testing the efficiency of two identical CWs at a low HLR (0.15 m³/m²/d) and a high HLR (1.3 m³/m²/d) fed with the same secondary effluent. The areal removal capacity during the high-HLR operation was 6-9 times higher than that during the low-HLR operation. A high dissolved oxygen content, and low COD and NH₄-N concentrations in the secondary effluent were critical for the robust PPCP removal by tertiary treatment HCWs.

Carbon-based single-atom catalysts in advanced oxidation reactions for water remediation: From materials to reaction pathways

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been widely recognized as state-of-the-art catalysts in environment remediation because of their exceptional performance, 100% metal atomic utilization, almost no secondary pollution, and robust structures. Most recently, the activation of persulfate with carbon-based SACs in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) raises tremendous interest in the degradation of emerging contaminants in wastewater, owning to its efficient and versatile reactive oxidant species (ROS) generation. However, the comprehensive and critical review unraveling the underlying relationship between structures of carbon-based SACs and the corresponding generated ROS is still rare. Herein, we systematically summarize the fundamental understandings and intrinsic mechanisms between single metal atom active sites and produced ROS during AOPs. The types of emerging contaminants are firstly elaborated, presenting the prior pollutants that need to be degraded. Then, the preparation and characterization methods of carbon-based SACs are overviewed. The underlying material structure-ROS type relationship in persulfate-based AOPs is discussed in depth to expound the catalytic mechanisms. Finally, we briefly conclude the current development of carbon-based SACs in AOPs and propose the prospects for rational design and synthesis of carbon-based SACs with on-demand catalytic performances in AOPs in future research.

Aging of biodegradable-mulch-derived microplastics reduces their sorption capacity of atrazine

Degradable plastics are gradually regarded as alternatives of conventional, synthetic organic polymers to reduce the plastics or microplastics (MPs) pollution; however, the reports upon environmental risk of degradable plastics are still limited. In order to evaluate the potential vector effect of biodegradable MPs on coexisting contaminants, sorption of atrazine onto pristine and ultraviolet-aged (UV) polybutylene adipate co-terephthalate (PBAT) MPs and polybutylene succinate co-terephthalate (PBST) MPs were investigated. The results showed that, UV aging led to more wrinkles and cracks on the surface, increased homogeneous chains proportion, enhanced hydrophobicity, and enlarged crystallinity of both MPs. The sorption kinetics of atrazine to MPs fitted well into pseudo-first-order (R² = 0.809-0.996) and pseudo-second-order (R² = 0.889-0.994) models. In the concentration range of 0.5-25 mg L^-1, the sorption isotherm fitted into linear (R² = 0.967-0.996) and Freundlich model (R² = 0.972-0.997), indicating that the absorption partitioning was the dominant sorption mechanism. The partition coefficient (K_d) of atrazine to PBAT- MPs (40.11-66.01 L kg^-1) was higher than that of PBST- MPs (34.34-57.96 L kg^-1), and the K_d values of both MPs declined for aged MPs. The specific surface area, hydrophobicity, polarity and crystallinity of MPs jointly interpreted the changing sorption capacity of the MPs. In the present study, both aged PBAT- and aged PBST- MPs exhibited lower vector potential to atrazine than pristine MPs, suggesting reduced risk of being a pollutant carrier, which is of great significance for the development of biodegradable plastics.

Impacts of garbage classification and disposal on the occurrence of pharmaceutical and personal care products in municipal solid waste leachates: A case study in Shanghai

Leachate generated during the treatment and disposal of municipal solid wastes (MSWs) can be an important source of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in the environment. With the implementation of garbage classification policy in China, the disposal methods of MSWs have changed, while its impacts on the occurrence of PPCPs in the generated leachate remain unknown. In this study, we investigated 49 target PPCPs in the leachates of classified MSWs, i.e. residual waste leachate (RWL) and food waste leachate (FWL), and revealed the influence of garbage classification implementation on the occurrence of PPCPs in leachates to be treated. The results showed the concentration and mass load of target PPCPs in the RWL samples (median values: 34.9 ng/L and 52.3 mg/d, respectively) were significantly higher than those in the FWL samples (median values: 19.3 ng/L and 14.5 mg/d, respectively). Macrolide (ML) antibiotics were the predominant PPCPs in the RWL samples, while in the FWL samples, quinolone (QL) antibiotics exhibited the highest concentration and mass load. The implementation of garbage classification policy led to the reduction of PPCP mass load (from 739 g/d to 262 g/d) in leachates to be treated. The findings are helpful for better designing or managing MSW treatment and disposal processes to minimize the emission of PPCPs from MSW leachates.

Insight into the application of magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers in soil-washing effluent: Selective removal of 4,4'-dibromodiphenyl ether, high adaptivity of material and efficient recovery of eluent

Soil washing techniques can effectively remove soil polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), but further removal of PBDEs from washing effluent is disrupted by environmental factors and coexisting organic matter. Hence, this work prepared novel magnetic molecularly imprinted polymers (MMIPs) to selectively remove PBDEs in soil washing effluent and recycling surfactants, with Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles as the magnetic core, methacrylic acid (MAA) as the functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as the cross-linker. Later, the prepared MMIPs were applied to adsorb 4,4'-dibromodiphenyl ether (BDE-15) in Triton X-100 soil-washing effluent and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectrometry (FT-IR), nitrogen adsorption and desorption experiments. According to our observations, BDE-15 equilibrium adsorptions on dummy-template magnetic molecularly imprinted adsorbent (D-MMIP, 4-bromo-4'-hydroxyl biphenyl as template) and part-template magnetic molecularly imprinted adsorbent (P-MMIP, toluene as template) were reached within 40 min, and their equilibrium adsorption capacities were 164.54 μmol/g and 145.55 μmol/g, respectively, with imprinted factor α > 2.03, selectivity factor β > 2.14, and selectivity S > 18.05. MMIPs exhibited good adaptability to pH, temperature, and cosolvent. Our Triton X-100 recovery rate reached as high as 99.9%, and MMIPs maintained a more than 95% adsorption capacity after being recycled five times. Our results offer a novel approach to selectively remove PBDEs in soil-washing effluent, with efficient recovery of surfactants and adsorbents in soil-washing effluent.

One-step self-assembly of Fe-biochar composite for enhanced persulfate activation to phenol degradation: Different active sites-induced radical/non-radical mechanism

Persulfate (PS) activation by nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) is promising for water purification, while is limited due to its easy agglomeration and oxidation. Herein, nZVI encapsuled in carbon matrix shell was synthesized via one-step carbothermal reduction. The core-shell structure effectively inhibited oxidation and agglomeration of nZVI core, and graphitized porous structures facilitated phenol binding with maximal adsorption capacity of 117.10 mg/g achieved by nZVI_0.6-BC₈₀₀. Both reactive oxygen species (SO₄^•-, O•H, O₂^•- and ¹O₂) and electron transfer process resulted in phenol decomposition. Owing to diversified active sites, the nZVI_0.6-BC₈₀₀/PS system could completely degrade phenol degradation within short time, and exhibited great adaptation to extensive pH range (3.0-9.0) and coexisting substances. Additionally, the nZVI_0.6-BC₈₀₀/PS system could maintain over 85% removal of phenol after three recycles or 50 days of storage, and was highly-efficient to different water environments, thus proposing rational design of iron-carbon catalyst with potential in water treatment.

Promotion effects and mechanisms of molybdenum disulfide on the propagation of antibiotic resistance genes in soil

The rapid development of nanotechnology has aroused considerable attentions toward understanding the effects of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) on the propagation of antibiotic resistance. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) is an extensively used ENM and poses potential risks associated with environmental exposure; nevertheless, the role of MoS₂ toward antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) transfer remains largely unknown. Herein, it was discovered that MoS₂ nanosheets accelerated the horizontal transfer of RP4 plasmid across Escherichia coli in a dose-dependent manner (0.5-10 mg/L), with the maximum transfer frequency 2.07-fold higher than that of the control. Integration of physiological, transcriptomics, and metabolomics analyses demonstrated that SOS response in bacteria was activated by MoS₂ due to the elevation of oxidative damage, accompanied by cell membrane permeabilization. MoS₂ promoted bacterial adhesion and intercellular contact via stimulating the secretion of extracellular polysaccharides. The ATP levels were maximally increased by 305.7 % upon exposure to MoS₂, and the expression of plasmid transfer genes was up-regulated, contributing to the accelerated plasmid conjugation and increased ARG abundance in soil. Our findings highlight the roles of emerging ENMs (e.g., MoS₂) in ARGs dissemination, which is significant for the safe applications and risk management of ENMs under the development scenarios of nanotechnology.

Deciphering the photoactive species-directed antibacterial mechanism of bismuth oxychloride with modulated nanoscale thickness

As an environmentally benign disinfection strategy, photocatalytic bacterial inactivation using nanoparticles involves photogenerated reactive species that cause cellular oxidative stress. Rationalising the structural performance of photocatalysts for the practical uses such as wastewater treatment has attracted significant attention; however, the contribution of reactive species to their photocatalytic antibacterial activities at the molecular and transcriptomic levels remains unclear. In this study, nontoxic bismuth oxychloride (BiOCl) photocatalysts with different nanoscale thicknesses, including nanosheets (Ns, ∼5.4 nm), nanoplates (Np, ∼1.8 nm), and ultra-nanosheets (Uns, ∼1.1 nm), were synthesised under hydrothermal conditions. Among the three samples, BiOCl Uns exhibited the most effective photocatalytic degradation efficiency with the calculated apparent rate constant of 0.0294 min^-1, ∼4 times faster than that of Ns, whereas BiOCl Ns possessed the most pronounced bactericidal effect (5.4 log inactivation). Such findings indicate the distinct role of the photoactive species responsible for photocatalytic bacterial inactivation. Moreover, transcriptome analysis of Escherichia coli after photocatalytic treatment revealed that the underlying photocatalytic antibacterial mechanism at the genetic expression level involves cellular component biosynthesis, energy metabolism, and material transportation. Notably, the differences between BiOCl Ns and BiOCl Uns were significantly enriched in purine metabolism. Therefore, the cost-effective preparation of BiOCl nanosheets with nanoscale thickness-modulated photocatalytic antibacterial activity has remarkable potential for sustainable environmental and biomedical applications.

Natural Solar Irradiation Produces Fluorescent and Biodegradable Nanoplastics

Nanoplastics (NPs) have raised global concern owing to their potential health effects. Herein, after simulated and natural solar irradiation, polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and poly(vinyl chloride) nanoplastics (PVC NPs) were observed to exhibit enhanced fluorescence, particularly PVC NPs. Furthermore, the role of photoaged NPs as a potential fluorescence indicator was evaluated by exposing a model aquatic organism Daphnia magna to these NPs. Our results revealed that photoaged NPs exhibited strong fluorescence owing to the generation of conjugated π bonds, which can achieve π-π* electron transition with low energy consumption. Photogenerated fluorescence also enabled the photoaged NPs to act as efficient fluorescent tracers, which can help track NP migration in various organisms. The results of two-photon laser confocal scanning microscopy revealed that the photoaged NPs could translocate across biological barriers and accumulate in extraintestinal tissues in addition to being ingested and excreted. Moreover, compared with pristine NPs, the photoaged NPs underwent biodegradation more easily, probably because of increased hydrophilicity due to photogenerated oxygen-containing moieties. Therefore, in addition to producing fluorescent NPs without the attachment of external fluorescent dyes, the natural photoaging process can promote the migration and degradation of photoaged NPs in food chains.

In vitro wheat protoplast cytotoxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics

Nanoplastics are an emerging environmental pollutant, having a potential risk to the terrestrial ecosystem. In the natural environment, almost all the micro-or nano-plastics will be aged by many factors and their characterizations of the surface will be modified. However, the toxicity and mechanism of the modified polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) to plant cells are not clear. In the study, the amino- and carboxyl-modified PS-NPs with different sizes (20 and 200 nm) were selected as the typical representatives to investigate their effects on protoplast cell viability, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in the cell and the leakage of cell-inclusion and apoptosis. The results indicated that the 20 nm amino-modified PS-NPs (PS-20A) could significantly damage the structure of the cell, especially the cell membrane, chloroplast and mitochondrion. After being modified by amino group, smaller size nanoplastics had the potential to cause more severe damage. In addition, compared with carboxyl-modified PS-NPs, the amino-modified PS-NPs induced more ROS production and caused higher membrane permeability/lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leakage. Apoptosis assay indicated that the proportion of viable cells in the PS-20A treatment decreased significantly, and the proportion of necrotic cells increased by four times. This study provides new insights into the toxicity and damage mechanism of PS-NPs to terrestrial vascular plants at the cellular level, and guides people to pay attention to the quality and safety of agricultural products caused by nanoplastics.

Systematic stress persistence and recovery patterns of rice (Oryza sativa L.) roots in response to molybdenum disulfide nanosheets

The increasing application of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) unavoidably leads to environmental release and biological exposure. Understanding the potential hazards of ENMs on crops is essential for appropriate utilization and management. Herein, rice seedlings were hydroponically exposed to molybdenum sulfide (MoS₂, a typical ENM) nanosheets at 5-20 mg/L for 7 days and then depurated for another 7 days in a fresh culture medium. Exposure to MoS₂ triggered irreversible reductions in root length (by 26.3%-69.9%) and tip number (by 22.2%-66.0%). Integration of biochemical assays, transcriptomic and metabolomics found that oxidative stress induced by MoS₂ in roots was persistent, whereas the activation of aquaporins, ionic transportation, and energy synthesis was normalized due to the recovery of nutrient uptake. The down-regulated levels of genes and metabolites associated with peroxidases, hemicellulose synthesis, expansins, and auxins caused persistent structural damages (sclerosis and rupture) of root cell walls. Approximately 64.5%-84.8% of internalized MoS₂ nanosheets were degraded, and the successive up-regulation of genes encoding cytochrome P450s and glutathione S-transferases reflected the biotransformation and detoxification of MoS₂ in the depuration period. These findings provide novel insights into the persistence and recovery of MoS₂ phytotoxicity, which will help advance the risk assessment of MoS₂ application on environment.

Inorganic carbon utilization: A target of silver nanoparticle toxicity on a submerged macrophyte

Submerged macrophytes play an important role in the global carbon cycle through diversified pathways of inorganic carbon (Ci) utilization distinct from terrestrial plants. However, the effects of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), an emerging contaminant, were unknown on the Ci utilization of submerged macrophytes. In Ottelia alismoides, the only known submerged macrophyte with three pathways of Ci utilization, before absorption, AgNPs inhibited the external carbonic anhydrase activity thus reducing the capacity of the plant to use HCO₃^-. After entering the plant, AgNPs mainly aggregated at the cell wall and in the chloroplast. The internalized AgNPs inhibited ribulose 1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco) activity blocking CO₂ fixation and disturbed C4 and crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM) by inhibiting phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC), pyruvate phosphate dikinase (PPDK), and NAD-dependent malic enzyme (NAD-ME) activities to alter intracellular malate biosynthesis and decarboxylation. Overall, our findings indicate that the Ci utilization of the submerged macrophyte is a target of AgNPs toxicity that might affect the carbon cycle in aquatic systems.
