Family resilience, perceived social support, and individual resilience in cancer couples: Analysis using the actor-partner interdependence mediation model

Mediation effect of self-efficacy on the relationship between perceived social support and resilience in caregivers of patients with first-stroke in China: a cross-sectional survey

BACKGROUND

Self-efficacy, perceived social support, and resilience in caregivers of first-stroke patients are closely related, while the interaction mechanism remains unclear. This research explores the mediation effect of self-efficacy in the relationship between perceived social support and resilience in caregivers of first-stroke patients in China.

METHODS

Convenience sampling was designed and used to recruit participants from the General Hospital of Northern Theater in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, China, from February to October 2022, in which 207 self-reported participants completed the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) and General Self Efficacy Scale (GSES). In addition, the mediation effect of self-efficacy between perceived social support and resilience was determined by the PROCESS macro for SPSS.

RESULT

Among the 207 caregivers of patients with first-stroke, the mean CD-RISC, MSPPS and GSES scores were (72.17 ± 11.28), (71.17 ± 8.99), and (29.64 ± 5.03) respectively. Caregivers' self-efficacy was positively correlated with perceived social support (r = 0.439, p < 0.01) and resilience (r = 0.730, p < 0.01). Self-efficacy served a mediation function partially between perceived social support and resilience, whose effect accounted for 52.90% of the total.

CONCLUSION

Both simple and mediation roles of perceived social support and self-efficacy are established in the relationship of resilience among caregivers of first-stroke patients. Positive social support and self-efficacy are two important targets for future interventional studies, and interventions on them may synergistically improve resilience. Hence, the nurses and community workers should correctly evaluate social support and self-efficacy, confirm the health education requirements, and implement counseling intervention to protect and improve the health of first-stroke patients and their families.

Effect of the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake on outpatient chemotherapy among cancer survivors in Japan: a retrospective study

BACKGROUND

The study aim was to elucidate the effect of the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake on outpatient chemotherapy treatment of cancer survivors at Kanazawa Medical University Hospital (KMUH), Japan.

METHODS

Medical and nursing records for January 4-31, 2024, from KMUH were retrospectively collected, and data for 286 participants were analyzed.

RESULTS

Of the 286 participants, 95.1% were able to attend their first scheduled appointment. Of the 12 (4.2%) who could not attend because of the earthquake, 7 (58.3%) rescheduled their appointments. A total of 8 participants (2.8%) were unable to attend their second scheduled appointment in January, despite being able to attend their first appointment; 3 (37.5%) of these participants reported that they were unable to attend their appointments because of the effect of the earthquake. Chemotherapy was not administered to 53 (18.5%) participants who did attend, mainly owing to neutropenia, progressive disease, rash, and anemia. Evacuation information was available for 25 participants (8.7%); of these, 8 (28.6%) evacuated to their homes, 7 (25.0%) to public shelters, and 4 (14.3%) to apartments near the hospital. Disaster status information was obtained from 62 participants (21.7%), and indicated experiences such as home damage, water outages, and relying on transportation assistance from family to attend appointments.

CONCLUSIONS

Most cancer survivors receiving chemotherapy at KMUH were able to maintain outpatient visits. However, a few could not attend because of the earthquake. Further studies are needed to provide more detailed information on the effect of disasters on cancer survivors and the potential factors underlying non-attendance at medical appointments.

Relationships among self-disclosure, social support and psychological distress in caregivers of patients with advanced lung cancer: A mediating model

OBJECTIVES

To examine the relationship between self-disclosure, social support, and psychological distress among caregivers of patients with advanced lung cancer, the study also examined the factors that impact psychological distress and the effect of social support on the relationship between self-disclosure and psychological distress.

METHODS

A total of 288 caregivers of patients with advanced lung cancer were selected using a convenience sampling method from December 2022 to July 2023 at a tertiary hospital in China. Participants' self-disclosure, perceived social support, and psychological distress were assessed by corresponding questionnaires, respectively. Mediating effects were detected using Amos 26.0 software.

RESULTS

The total scores for psychological distress, perceived social support, and self-disclosure of caregivers were 28.62 ± 6.45, 55.22 ± 7.81, and 38.39 ± 5.64, respectively. Correlation analysis suggested that psychological distress in caregivers was negatively correlated with both perceived social support and self-disclosure. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that self-disclosure and perceived social support were influential factors of caregivers' psychological distress. Moreover, perceived social support partially mediated the relationship between self-disclosure and psychological distress, accounting for 54.37% of the total effect.

CONCLUSION

Caregivers of patients with advanced lung cancer experience significant psychological distress. Self-disclosure can affect caregivers' psychological distress directly and indirectly through perceived social support. Healthcare professionals should be attentive to caregivers' psychological distress and carry out relevant nursing measures to improve caregivers' self-disclosure and social support to promote their physical and mental health.

Self-disclosure, perceived social support, and reproductive concerns among young male cancer patients in China: A mediating model analysis

Objective

Many young male cancer patients experience reproductive concerns. Self-disclosure might be able to improve patients' perceived social support and reproductive concerns. Nevertheless, these relationships have not yet been confirmed among young male cancer patients. This study aims to investigate the level of reproductive concerns and to identify the mediating role of perceived social support between self-disclosure and reproductive concerns among young male cancer patients in China by developing a structural model.

Methods

This study was a quantitative, cross-sectional design. We used the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement guidelines to report this study. A total of 369 young male cancer survivors were recruited by convenience sampling from two tertiary hospitals in Taiyuan, Shanxi, China. Data were collected using a "general data questionnaire", "distress disclosure index" (DDI), "perceived social support scale" (PSSS), and "reproductive concerns after cancer-male" (RCAC-M) via the WeChat mini program "Questionnaire Star" and paper questionnaire. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analyses, and structural equation models were adopted to analyze the data.

Results

Reproductive concerns were at moderate levels and negatively associated with self-disclosure (r = -0.619, P < 0.01) and perceived social support (r = -0.599, P < 0.01). Self-disclosure indirectly influenced reproductive concerns (-0.328∼-0.159, P < 0.001) through perceived social support.

Conclusions

Self-disclosure and perceived social support are closely associated with reproductive concerns in young male cancer patients, and perceived social support is a mediator between self-disclosure and reproductive concerns. Healthcare providers could reduce reproductive concerns by enhancing self-disclosure and improving perceived social support.

Discrepancies in perceived family resilience between adolescents with chronic illness and parents: using response surface analysis to examine the relationship with adolescents' psychological adjustment

BACKGROUND

This study aimed to explore discrepancies in adolescents with chronic illness and their parents' perceptions of family resilience, as well as the relationship between these differences and the psychological adjustment of adolescents with chronic illness.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 264 dyads of parents (77.7% mothers, mean age 41.60 years, SD = 6.17) and adolescents (48.5% girls, mean age 12.68 years, SD = 2.11) with chronic illness were recruited through convenience sampling from three children's hospitals in Wenzhou, Hangzhou, and Shanghai, China between June 2022 and May 2023. The Chinese version of the Family Resilience Scale and the Psychological Adjustment Scale, which are commonly used measures with good reliability and validity, were employed to assess family resilience and psychological adaption, respectively. The data were analyzed using polynomial regression and response surface analysis.

RESULTS

Adolescents with chronic illness reported higher family resilience than their parents (t=-2.80, p < 0.05). The correlations between family resilience and adolescents' psychological adjustment reported by the adolescents (r = 0.45-0.48) were higher than parents (r = 0.18-0.23). In the line of congruence, there were positive linear (a1 = 1.09-1.60, p < 0.001) and curvilinear (a2=-1.38∼-0.72, p < 0.05) associations between convergent family resilience and adolescents' psychological adjustment. In the line of incongruence, when adolescents reported lower family resilience than parents, adolescents had a lower level of psychological adjustment (a3=-1.02∼-0.45, p < 0.05). Adolescents' sociability decreased when the perceived family resilience of parent-adolescent dyads converged (a4 = 1.36, p < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

The findings highlighted the importance of considering the discrepancies and congruence of family resilience in the parent-child dyads when developing interventions to improve the psychological adjustment of adolescents with chronic illness. Interventions aimed at strengthening family communication to foster the convergence of perceptions of family resilience in parent-adolescent dyads were warranted.

Social support and family resilience among Chinese people receiving maintenance hemodialysis: A polynomial regression and response surface analysis explaining psychological resilience

Psychological resilience plays an important role in overcoming emotional distress among people receiving maintenance hemodialysis (MHD). This study aimed to investigate how social support and family resilience interact to influence psychological resilience among Chinese people receiving MHD. This was a prospective longitudinal study with three time points: baseline (T1), 3 months (T2), and 6 months (T3) later. A convenience sample of 252 participants (67.1% male; 57.6 ± 13.8 years of age) from Zhejiang Province, China, who completed baseline measures of social support, family resilience, and psychological resilience, were further assessed for psychological resilience at T2 and T3. Polynomial regression (PR) and response surface analysis (RSA) were used to analyze the data. At all time points, and in the case of agreement between social support and family resilience, the combined effect of both variables manifested as a positive linear association with psychological resilience. Instead, at baseline, and in case of disagreement, the same combined effect manifested as a negative linear relationship related to psychological resilience. The findings highlighted the importance of considering the conjoint influence of social support and family resilience when developing interventions to improve the psychological resilience of people receiving MHD.

The association between self-efficacy, perceived social support, and family resilience in patients undergoing hemodialysis: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Self-efficacy of patients on hemodialysis is considered a main component of the successful management of chronic kidney diseases. The self-efficacy of these patients may be influenced by many individual and social factors. This study aimed to assess the association between perceived self-efficacy and social support by patients on hemodialysis treatment and the resilience of their families.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted on 183 patients and 183 families of hemodialysis patients in the largest hemodialysis center in northwest of Iran. Data was collected from July to December 2021 using chronic kidney disease self-efficacy, multidimensional perceived social support (MSPSS), and the Walsh family resilience questionnaire (WFRQ). The collected data were analyzed by SPSS software using descriptive and inferential statistical tests.

RESULTS

The findings showed that the mean score of patients' self-efficacy was 171.63 ± 38.19 in a possible range of 25 to 250. Moreover, the mean score of perceived social support was 62.12 ± 16.12 in a possible range of 7 to 84. The mean total score of family resilience was 119.08 ± 26.20 in a possible range of 32 to 84. Also, the results of the study showed a positive and significant relationship between the self-efficacy of patients with their perceived social support and the resilience of their families (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

The results of the study showed that there is a significant relationship between patient self-efficacy and family resilience and social support received in chronic kidney patients undergoing hemodialysis. Therefore, it is suggested to consider practical strategies in the field of family resilience and social support to improve patients' self-efficacy.

The mediating effect of perceived social support between family resilience and meaning in life in breast cancer patients

PURPOSE

The beneficial effects of family resilience and meaning in life on patients are established, but limited is known for the effect of perceived social support. We aim to investigate the impact of family resilience on the meaning of life among Chinese patients with breast cancer (BC) and to further detect whether perceived social support mediated this association.

METHODS

From February to June 2022, we conducted this cross-sectional study with 276 women who were diagnosed with BC in a tertial hospital in Guangdong province, China. The Chinese version of Meaning in Life Scale (C-MiLS) was used to measure the meaning in life. The Chinese version of the family resilience assessment scale (C-FRAS) and the perceived social support scale (PSSS) were adopted to obtain the family resilience and perceived social support, respectively. The mediating effect of perceived spousal support was estimated using the bootstrapped confidence interval (CI) via IBM SPSS AMOS 22.0.

RESULTS

The mean scores were 60.79 ± 11.63 for meaning in life, 82.08 ± 11.48 for family resilience, and 62.72 ± 12.19 for perceived social support, respectively. Our results indicated the positive correlations of meaning in life with family resilience (β = 0.822, P < 0.05) and perceived social support (β = 0.886, P < 0.05). The perceived social support exerted the mediating effect in the relationship between family resilience and meaning in life (β = 0.368 [95%CI, 0.274, 0.450], P < 0.001), accounting for 54.6% of the variance in meaning in life.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings highlight that family resilience and perceived social support should be enhanced for BC patients to improve their meaning in life. In particular, the association between family resilience and meaning in life was positively mediated by perceived social support. Thus, interventions for improving family resilience and perceived social support might be useful in easing psychological distress and improving meaning in life in individuals with BC.

Effect of Spirituality on Psychological Resilience and Hope in Patient-Family Caregiver Dyads Experiencing Gynecological Cancer: An Actor-Partner Interdependence Analysis

BACKGROUND

Women experiencing gynecological cancer (GCPs) and family caregivers (FCGs) use spirituality to cope with cancer. However, the dual relationship between the impact of spirituality on psychological resilience and hope among both GCPs and FCGs has not yet been explored.

OBJECTIVE

To examine the interdependent relationship between spirituality, psychological resilience, and hope of women with gynecological cancer and their FCGs at the dyadic level.

METHODS

In this cross-sectional study, 107 dyads were recruited from the gynecological oncology departments of 2 university hospitals in Ankara, Turkey. The GCPs and FCGs completed a Patient/Family Caregiver Information Form, Spiritual Well-being Scale, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Dispositional Hope Scale. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlations. This study used the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model.

RESULTS

Spirituality of both GCPs and FCGs had a significant positive effect on their psychological resilience ( B = 0.918, P < .001; B = 0.435, P < .001, respectively) and hope ( B = 0.350, P < .001; B = 0.246, P < .001, respectively). However, the spirituality of GCPs and FCGs did not have a partner effect on psychological resilience ( B = -0.150, P < .052; B = -0.150, P = .052, respectively) and hope ( B = -0.012, P = .810; B = 0.073, P = .157, respectively).

CONCLUSIONS

Spirituality of GCPs and their FCGs positively affected their psychological resilience and hope, but the effect on each other was limited.

IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE

Health professionals, especially nurses, should focus on tailoring spiritual care interventions to the unique needs of each individual within the GCP and FCG dyads. Personalized approaches that recognize and address the specific spiritual concerns of patients and caregivers may be more effective in promoting psychological resilience and hope.

Resilience and related factors in caregivers of adult cancer patients: a systematic review

Background

This systematic review aimed to investigate resilience and its related factors in caregivers of adult patients with cancer.

Materials and methods

A systematic search of online electronic databases including Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Iranmedex, and Scientific Information Database (SID) was performed using keywords extracted from Medical Subject Headings such as "Psychological Resilience", "Caregiver", and "Cancer" from the earliest to 6 June 2023. The quality of the studies included in this review was evaluated using the appraisal tool for cross-sectional studies (AXIS tool).

Results

A total of 2735 caregivers of cancer patients participated in 15 studies. The majority of the studies found that caregivers of cancer patients had high levels of resilience. Factors related to the resilience of cancer patients' caregivers included caregivers' social support, caregivers' quality of life, patients' resilience, caregivers' family function, patients' performance, caregivers' age, caregivers' health status, caregivers' self-esteem, caregivers post-traumatic growth, caregivers religious, caregivers hope, caregivers positive affect, patients age, patients social support, patients resilience support, patients quality of life, caregivers' anxiety, caregivers' depression, caregivers' burden, caregivers level of education, caregivers financial problem, caregivers memory, caregivers negative affect, caregivers post-traumatic stress disorder, maternal distress, and patients post-traumatic stress disorder.

Conclusion

Therefore, healthcare administrators and policymakers can enhance the resilience of caregivers and the quality of care they provide by instituting ongoing training initiatives focused on evaluating mental well-being and implementing coping strategies for managing stress and depression.

Role of self-esteem and personal mastery on the association between social support and resilience among COVID-19 long haulers

Although the COVID-19 mortality rate is declining, the number of individuals dealing with persistent COVID-19 symptoms is increasing worldwide, making long COVID a global public health concern. People with long COVID (long haulers) often deal with physical and mental stressors. Long haulers' psychological resilience could play a key role in coping with these stressors in intercorrelation with psychosocial resources. The current study aims to test a hypothesized relationship between social support and its functions (i.e., instrumental and emotional) and the resilience of long haulers through serial mediation by personal mastery and self-esteem. A cross-sectional and self-administered online survey was conducted among 460 individuals with long COVID recruited from COVID-19 Facebook support groups in the United States. Analyzing data indicated a positive correlation between social support and the resilience of long haulers. Structural equation modeling suggested that self-esteem and personal mastery fully mediated the association between social (instrumental) support and resilience. Personal mastery also mediated the association between self-esteem and resilience in social (instrumental) support models. However, in the emotional support model, the indirect effect was non-significant for the mediation by personal mastery and self-esteem. Findings suggest that social support, mainly instrumental support, may protect long haulers by promoting their resilience through self-esteem and personal mastery. This study emphasizes the importance of including social support services in designing programs for COVID-19 long haulers.

A latent profile analysis of psychological resilience in gastric cancer survivors: A cross-sectional study

PURPOSE

To characterize patterns of psychological resilience in gastric cancer survivors using latent profile analyses and to explore the factors influencing these latent profiles based on Kumpfer's resilience framework.

METHODS

Five hundred eighty-six gastric cancer survivors were recruited between July 30, 2021, and May 1, 2023. A demographic and clinical characteristics questionnaire, Connor and Davidson's Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Fear of Progression Questionnaire Short Form (FoP-Q-SF), General Self-efficacy Scale (GSES), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ), and Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS) were used for the investigation. Latent profile analysis of the resilience of gastric cancer survivors was conducted, and the factors influencing the latent profiles were explored by multivariate logistic regression analysis.

RESULTS

A total of 586 questionnaires were collected, and 572 were valid, with an effective recovery rate of 97.61%. The results of latent profile analysis showed that the resilience of gastric cancer survivors was divided into four subgroups, namely, the low-resilience group (18.4%), moderate-resilience group (43.2%), medium-high-resilience group (30.2%), and high-resilience group (8.2%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that fear of disease progression, self-efficacy, medical coping mode and social support were influencing factors of subgroups.

CONCLUSIONS

Psychological resilience in gastric cancer survivors is individualized. Nurses should assess risk and protective factors for survivor resilience based on Kumpfer's resilience framework, identify unique needs, and develop new approaches and interventions.

Predictors of partnership and sexual satisfaction and dyadic effects in couples affected by endometriosis and infertility

PURPOSE

Endometriosis and infertility are associated with impaired partnership and sexuality of the patients, but also of their male partners. Also, endometriosis is one of the most common causes of infertility, resulting in a large overlap of both pathologies. The aim of this study was to determine the association of different predictors of partnership and sexual satisfaction and dyadic effects in couples with endometriosis and infertility.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted with n = 62 women with endometriosis and n = 46 partners, including a total of n = 44 couples, some of whom were affected by infertility. The questionnaire included items on partnership, sexuality, depression, social support, and desire for a child. Multiple linear regression and the actor-partner-interdependence-model were used for analysis.

RESULTS

Significant dyadic effects only occurred in couples with both endometriosis and infertility. Depression showed a significant negative actor effect in men for partnership satisfaction and a negative actor and partner effect in women for sexuality satisfaction (p < .05). For women, social support showed a significant positive actor effect for partnership satisfaction (p < .05), age showed a significant actor and partner effect for sexuality satisfaction (p < .05).

CONCLUSION

The results show a significant association of endometriosis and infertility with partnership and sexuality satisfaction. Infertility could be a decisive factor. However, the large overlapping of both endometriosis und infertility in many couples support the importance of further studies to differentiate between the both effects.

Factors influencing self-regulatory fatigue in patients undergoing chemotherapy for gynecologic cancer: a cross-sectional study

Objective

To understand the current status of self-regulatory fatigue among gynecologic cancer chemotherapy patients and explore influencing factors.

Methods

Using convenient sampling, a total of 232 gynecological cancer chemotherapy patients from two tertiary hospitals in Zhengzhou, Henan, China, were selected as study subjects from February 2023 to April 2023. General information questionnaire, Self-Regulatory Fatigue Scale (SRF-S), Strategies Used by People to Promote Health (SUPPH) Scale, Connor-Davidson resilience scale (CD-RISC) and Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) were employed for data collection. The data were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 software. Chi-square test and binary logistic regression were executed to explore the correlates of self-regulatory fatigue, the significance level (α) was set at 0.05.

Results

The self-regulatory fatigue score of the 232 patients was 44 (36, 56). Binary logistic regression analyses revealed significant associations, demonstrating that residing in urban areas (OR=0.241, P=0.015), having no comorbidities (OR=0.158, P=0.015), increased perceived social support (OR=0.937, P=0.001), strong self-efficacy (OR=0.959, P=0.021), and heightened psychological resilience (OR=0.895, P<0.001) acted as protective factors against self-regulatory fatigue (P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Patients residing in rural areas, having more than two comorbidities, lower self-efficacy and psychological resilience levels, and lower perceived social support are indicative of higher levels of self-regulatory fatigue. Identifying these influencing factors can provide references and support for developing individualized support and intervention measures to improve patients' physical and mental well-being.

The impact of social support on benefit finding among patients with advanced lung cancer and their caregivers: based on actor-partner interdependence mediation model

PURPOSE

Advanced lung cancer and its treatment serve as a sudden stressful event that profoundly impacts the psychological experience of both the patients and their primary caregiver. This study used dyadic analyses to explore the dyadic effects of social support on benefit finding and whether hope level mediates the patient-caregiver dyads in advanced lung cancer.

METHODS

Two hundred ninety-five pairs of patients with advanced lung cancer and primary caregivers completed the Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), the Herth Hope Index (HHI), and the Benefit Finding Scale (BFS). Dyadic analyses were conducted using structural equation modelling based on the actor-partner interdependence mediation model.

RESULTS

The results indicated that for both patients (B = 0.259, 95% CI = 0.135-0.423, P < 0.001) and their primary caregivers (B = 0.596, 95% CI = 0.403-0.838, P < 0.001), hope level mediated the actor effect of social support on benefit finding; social support was positively associated with hope level and further enhanced benefit finding. Regarding partner effects (B = 0.242, 95% CI = 0.119-0.404, P < 0.001), primary caregivers' social support significantly indirectly affected patients' benefit finding through patients' hope level.

CONCLUSION

There is an interaction between social support, hope level, and benefit finding in patients with advanced lung cancer and their primary caregivers. Healthcare professionals ought to be vigilant in recognizing patients and caregivers who are vulnerable, have limited social support, and possess diminished hope levels. At the same time, nurses should provide timely psychological support and counseling to patients and their caregivers, encourage them to actively participate in social activities, and inspire their confidence and hope in life, thus improving their benefit findings.

An ecological resilience model for adolescents with type 1 diabetes: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Highly resilient adolescents with type 1 diabetes have been proved to achieve within-target glycemic outcomes and experience high quality of life. The ecological resilience model for adolescents with type 1 diabetes was developed in this study. It aims to increase our understanding of how resilience is both positively and negatively affected by internal and environmental ecological factors.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study surveyed 460 adolescents with type 1 diabetes from 36 cities in 11 provinces, China. Participants completed self-report questionnaires on resilience, family functioning, peer support, peer stress, coping style, and demographics. Standard glycated hemoglobin tests were performed on the adolescents. Structural equation modeling was applied to analyze the data.

RESULTS

The ecological resilience model for adolescents with type 1 diabetes was a good model with a high level of variance in resilience (62%). Family functioning was the most important predictor of resilience, followed by peer support, positive coping, and peer stress. Moreover, positive coping was the mediator of the relationship between family functioning and resilience. Positive coping and peer stress co-mediated the association between peer support and resilience.

CONCLUSIONS

Family functioning, peer relationships, and positive coping are interrelated, which may jointly influence resilience. The findings provide a theoretical basis for developing resilience-promotion interventions for adolescents with type 1 diabetes, which may lead to health improvements during a vulnerable developmental period.

Factors influencing family resilience in adult patients with acute leukemia undergoing chemotherapy: A qualitative study

Objective

To explore the factors influencing family resilience in adult patients with acute leukemia undergoing chemotherapy, with the aim of providing a theoretical basis for the development of strategies to strengthen their family resilience.

Methods

A descriptive phenomenological qualitative research method was used to select 11 adult acute leukemia chemotherapy patients for semi-structured interviews. Colaizzi 7-step analysis and NVivo 12.0 were used to summarize information and refine themes.

Results

The main outcomes consisted of two themes and 11 sub-themes: protective factors for family resilience (positive traits, cognitive restructuring, positive family beliefs, organizational flexibility, clear communication, and social support) and risk factors for family resilience (symptom burden, self-concealment, role overload, economic distress, and social alienation).

Conclusions

Health care professionals should pay attention to screening protective and risk factors for family resilience in adult acute leukemia chemotherapy patients, affirming the positive role of internal and external resources available in the family in stressful situations, alleviating patients' negative experiences, and promoting the recovery of family function.

Outcome differences by sex in oncology clinical trials

Identifying sex differences in outcomes and toxicity between males and females in oncology clinical trials is important and has also been mandated by National Institutes of Health policies. Here we analyze the Trialtrove database, finding that, strikingly, only 472/89,221 oncology clinical trials (0.5%) had curated post-treatment sex comparisons. Among 288 trials with comparisons of survival, outcome, or response, 16% report males having statistically significant better survival outcome or response, while 42% reported significantly better survival outcome or response for females. The strongest differences are in trials of EGFR inhibitors in lung cancer and rituximab in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (both favoring females). Among 44 trials with side effect comparisons, more trials report significantly lesser side effects in males (N = 22) than in females (N = 13). Thus, while statistical comparisons between sexes in oncology trials are rarely reported, important differences in outcome and toxicity exist. These considerable outcome and toxicity differences highlight the need for reporting sex differences more thoroughly going forward.

A latent class analysis of family resilience and its relationship with fear of recurrence in lung cancer patients: a cross-sectional study

PURPOSE

Family resilience helps cancer-affected families overcome challenges and may influence an individual's fear of cancer recurrence (FCR). Identifying distinct classes of family resilience among lung cancer patients is crucial for tailored interventions. This study aimed to identify latent classes of family resilience in lung cancer patients and explore their relationships with FCR.

METHODS

Three hundred ten lung cancer patients from three hospitals in Fujian were recruited from June to September 2021. Clinical data were extracted from medical records, while sociodemographic details, family resilience, and FCR were self-reported. A latent class analysis was performed to identify family resilience classes.

RESULTS

A 4-class solution showed the best fit. Compared to Class 1, the patients who had no comorbidities (ORs = 3.480-16.005) had an increased likelihood of belonging to Class 2 and 3, while those who were not family breadwinners (ORs = 0.118-0.176) had a decreased likelihood. Further, the patients who (1) did not lack interest/pleasure in doing things during the past 2-week period (OR = 7.057), (2) were never smokers (OR = 6.230), and (3) were urban residents (OR = 8.985) had an increased likelihood of belonging to Class 4, while those who were (1) male (OR = 0.167), (2) not the family breadwinner (OR = 0.152), and (3) had none or only one child (OR = 0.203) had a decreased likelihood of belonging to Class 4. The FCR level differed significantly among these four classes.

CONCLUSION

Our study identified four distinct classes of family resilience among Chinese lung cancer patients. FCR severity decreased with increasing levels of family resilience.

Social support, family resilience and psychological resilience among maintenance hemodialysis patients: a longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

Psychological distress is common in maintenance hemodialysis patients, and high psychological resilience can promote psychological well-being. The current research focuses on psychological resilience protective factors such as family resilience and social support. However, the trajectories of psychological resilience, family resilience, and social support over time and their longitudinal relationships in maintenance hemodialysis patients have not been fully explored yet. Therefore, this study aims to explore the longitudinal relationship between these factors.

METHODS

Patients who received regular hemodialysis treatment for more than three months at dialysis centers of three tertiary hospitals in Zhejiang, China, were recruited from September to December 2020. A total of 252 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria completed three follow-up surveys, including social support, family resilience, and psychological resilience assessments. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to explore differences in their respective scores at different time points. The cross-lagged analysis was performed in AMOS using the maximum likelihood method to examine the the reciprocal predictive relationships between these factors.

RESULTS

Social support and psychological resilience remained relatively stable over time, whereas family resilience indicated a little increasing trend. According to the cross-lagged analysis, higher T1 social support predicted higher family resilience at T2 [β = 0.123, 95% CI (0.026-0.244)]. Further, the effects of T2 social support to T3 family resilience [β = 0.194, 95%CI (0.039-0.335)] and psychological resilience [β = 0.205, 95%CI (0.049-0.354)] were significant. Finally, the effects of T2 family resilience to T3 social support [β = 0.122, 95%CI (0.010-0.225)] and psychological resilience [β = 0.244, 95%CI (0.119-0.359)] were also significant.

CONCLUSIONS

The study showed that the directionality of the relationship appears to be from social support or family resilience to patients' psychological resilience but not vice versa. This finding reminds healthcare professionals to emphasize the vital role of social and family resources in providing appropriate support and interventions for maintenance hemodialysis patients to promote psychological resilience and mental health development.

Using a Mixed-Method Approach to Explore the Factors Influencing the Family Resilience of Stroke Survivors in China

Background

Stroke is a critical public health issue in China that necessitates a closer examination of family resilience (defined here as the collective capacity of individuals, families and communities to effectively navigate challenges, recover from adverse events and foster positive adaptation). Amid rising stroke incidence, this study addresses the dearth of research on family resilience among stroke survivors in China, aiming to assess its level, identify influencing factors and establish coping strategies for family caregivers.

Methods

This mixed-methods research employed a sequential explanatory design. Questionnaires were distributed to 258 stroke survivors and their family members at outpatient follow-up visits. In the first stage (ie the quantitative research stage), the research tools for data collection included a general demographic sociological data questionnaire, the Family Resilience Assessment Scale (FRAS), the Self-Efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-Item Scale, the Caregiver Burden Scale, the Family Functioning Scale and the Social Support Rating Scale. Quantitative data were analysed using IBM SPSS 26.0 software, utilising descriptive statistics for summarising sociodemographic characteristics and conducting analyses, such as independent-sample t-tests, one-way analysis of variance and Spearman correlation analysis. The second stage (ie the qualitative research stage) involved complementing and validating the data, developing a quantitative-qualitative interview framework and selecting participants for interviews. Colaizzi's seven-step analysis was applied to analyse interview data. In the third stage, the quantitative and qualitative research results were integrated, and a comprehensive analysis was performed to obtain an accurate conclusion.

Results

A total of 242 families responded to the questionnaire (response rate: 93.8%). In total, the mean age of stroke survivors was 61.86 ± 8.76 years old, and 69.8% were male. The quantitative results showed that the FRAS mean score was (185.33 ± 24.78), which was above the medium level. The multiple linear regression analysis confirmed that family function was the strongest influencing factor on family resilience (β = 0.948, p < 0.01). The qualitative analysis revealed four themes of family adaptation experience: loss of independence and certainty, facing threats and challenges, seeking family advantage resources and adopting coping strategies.

Conclusion

This hybrid study sheds light on the adaptation process of the families of stroke survivors, revealing family function as the primary influencer of resilience. Recognising that eliminating risk factors is challenging, our suggestion is for clinical practitioners to emphasise family strengths and implement resilience-oriented interventions. Focusing on enhancing coping abilities and fostering adaptation within families can aid in the rehabilitation process, promoting the well-being and growth of both the family unit and individual members, while alleviating caregiver burden.

The relationship between family communication and family resilience in Chinese parents of depressed adolescents: a serial multiple mediation of social support and psychological resilience

BACKGROUND

Family resilience plays a crucial role in helping depressed adolescents overcome challenges. However, studies examining family resilience in depressed adolescents are currently scarce. This study, guided by the family resilience framework, aimed to investigate the serial-multiple mediation of social support and psychological resilience between family communication and family resilience in Chinese families of depressed adolescents.

METHODS

In 229 parents of adolescents with major depressive disorder, 20.1% comprises of fathers, while 79.9% comprises of mothers. The mean age of depressed adolescents was 14.84 (±1.76) years, and the mean age of parents of these depressed adolescents was 43.24 (±4.67) years. The Family Resilience Assessment Scale (FRAS), the Psychological Resilience of Parents of Special Children Questionnaire, and the Social Support Rating Scale, Family Assessment Device (FAD) were used to collected data. Descriptive, univariate, and Pearson correlation analyses were used in preliminary analyses. To explore mediation, we employed a serial-multiple mediation model (PROCESS model 6).

RESULTS

Family communication was positively correlated with family resilience, social support, and psychological resilience. Mediation analysis revealed indirect effects of family communication on family resilience, which were mediated solely by either social support or psychological resilience, or through multiple mediation pathways involving both social support and psychological resilience.

CONCLUSIONS

Family communication positively and directly affects the family resilience of depressed adolescents, and a higher level of social support and psychological resilience can help improve family resilience. These findings not only provide empirical evidence supporting the family resilience framework but also have practical implications for future family interventions targeting depressed adolescents.

The dyadic effects of individual resilience on family resilience among Chinese parents and children during COVID-19

Previous studies have mainly focused on examining families' struggles during the adaptive process of adversity, while the strength of family and how it arises were neglected. This study aims to explore the relationships between individual and family resilience among parents and children in families during COVID-19. Guided by the longitudinal actor-partner interdependence model, one parent and a child in 136 Chinese families completed assessments of pandemic media exposure and individual resilience in mid-February 2020 and family resilience in early March. Results showed that the child's individual resilience was positively associated with their own and their parents' family resilience, while parents' resilience was only positively associated with their own. The evidence indicated that a child's individual resilience was critical for all core family members' perceived family resilience and provided implications for family intervention programs.

The 4-item family resilience scale: psychometric evaluation and measurement invariance of the malay version in adolescents and young adults

BACKGROUND

The original Family Resilience Scale (FRS) is a reliable tool to assess family resilience. However, the FRS is based on the United States and parental context. Thus, the usefulness of the FRS for the adolescent and young adult population in Asian countries, particularly Malaysia remains unknown. This study translated the FRS into the Malay language and validated it on Malaysian adolescents and young adults to identify its potential as a self-report tool to assess the resilience level of their family.

METHODS

A total of 351 participants (Mage = 19.75, SDage = 3.29) were recruited in the study using purposive sampling. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to examine the factorial structure of the Family Resilience Scale-Malay (FRS-Malay) and measurement invariance between adolescents and young adults. Then, the scale's reliability was investigated using Cronbach's alpha, McDonald's omega coefficients, and composite reliability index. Finally, we examined the discriminant validity of the FRS-Malay by correlating its score with individual resilience score and examined the incremental validity of the scale using hierarchical multiple regression analysis to test if family resilience can explain individual well-being levels beyond and above individual resilience.

RESULTS

The findings of the confirmatory factor analysis suggest that a single-factor model is supported for both age groups. Furthermore, the scale exhibited scalar invariance between adolescents and young adults. The scale also exhibited good reliability, as the value of Cronbach's alpha, McDonald omega coefficients, and composite reliability index were above 0.80. Additionally, the Pearson correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between the FRS-Malay and individual resilience scores, which supports the discriminant validity of the scale. Similarly, the incremental validity of the scale is also supported. Specifically, family resilience had a positive correlation with well-being, even after controlling for individual resilience in the regression analysis.

CONCLUSIONS

The FRS-Malay has demonstrated good reliability and validity. The scale measures the same construct of family resilience across adolescents and young adults, making it suitable for comparisons. Therefore, this unidimensional tool is appropriate for self-reporting their perceived level of family resilience. It is also useful for studying the development and fluctuation of family resilience in the Malaysian context.

Effects of Social Support, Family Resilience, and Individual Resilience on Fear of Cancer Recurrence Among Persons With Breast Cancer: A Cross-Sectional Study

BACKGROUND

There is limited research exploring the psychological and social predictors of fear of cancer recurrence (FCR).

OBJECTIVE

This study tested the effects of social support, family resilience, and individual resilience on FCR among persons with breast cancer.

METHODS

A convenience sampling method was used to select 214 participants from March to August 2021 in 1 tertiary hospital in Jinan, China. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires. Path analysis was adopted to explore the effects of social support, family resilience, and individual resilience on FCR.

RESULTS

Findings showed that 94.6% of the participants reached a clinical level of FCR. Social support (β = -.75, p < .01) and individual resilience (β = -.32, p < .01) negatively and directly impacted FCR. Family resilience indirectly impacted FCR through individual resilience (β = -.22, 95% confidence interval (CI): -.34 to -.08). Social support indirectly impacted FCR through family resilience and individual resilience (β = -.15, 95% CI: -.23 to -.06).

CONCLUSIONS

Persons with breast cancer experienced a high level of FCR. Individual resilience was a mediator between family resilience and FCR. Resilience (individual resilience and family resilience) partially mediated the effects of social support on FCR. The findings indicate that measures focused on improving individual resilience, family resilience, and social support should be considered by nurses, which are helpful for easing FCR.

The relationship between trait mindfulness and resilience: A meta-analysis

Resilience is a positive psychological resource that promotes health. Trait mindfulness was found to be related to resilience. However, previous studies on this relationship have shown contradictory results. The current meta-analysis explored the relationship between trait mindfulness and resilience based on a three-level random-effects meta-analysis model. A significant and positive relationship between trait mindfulness and resilience (r = 0.385; p < 0.0001) was revealed by analyzing 197 effect sizes from 103 studies. Furthermore, the subsequent moderator analysis found that the facet of mindfulness (e.g., awareness, nonjudging) (F(6, 190)  = 6.181; p < 0.001), measurement of mindfulness (e.g., the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale) (F(7, 191)  = 4.758; p < 0.001), aspect of resilience (e.g., family resilience) (F(5, 191)  = 3.455; p < 0.05), measurement of resilience (e.g., the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale) (F(11, 185)  = 2.256; p < 0.05), and age (F(1, 150)  = 4.588; p < 0.05) acted as significant moderators. Overall, this study confirmed the positive relationship between trait mindfulness and resilience, suggesting that people with higher levels of trait mindfulness were more likely to have higher levels of resilience. The current findings provided insightful information for interventions targeted at improving resilience.

Family resilience in cancer treatment and key influencing factors: A systematic review

OBJECTIVE

To identify the status quo and key influencing factors of family resilience in cancer treatment.

METHODS

Eight electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, CNKI, Wan Fang Database, VIP Database) were searched from 2000 to 10 May 2023. Inclusion criteria were the following: (a) study subjects were cancer patients or their family caregivers, (b) family resilience was measured as a variable, (c) reported factors associated with family resilience, (d) employed either quantitative or mixed methods design, (e) written in English or Chinese, (f) published in peer-reviewed journals. All included studies were evaluated for quality using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool.

RESULTS

Thirty studies were included in the systematic review. According to our analysis, the family resilience of cancer patients could be influenced by various factors associated with six clusters: (a) demographic characteristics, (b) severe staging and treatment of cancer, (c) psychological and health statuses, (d) family, and (e) social environment. Meanwhile, several specific protective factors and risk factors of family resilience were also identified.

CONCLUSION

Family resilience plays an important role in promoting positive adaptation in the face of adversity in families of cancer patients/caregivers. This study classifies related influencing factors by analyzing both protective factors and risk factors (and some controversial factors of family resilience). We found that longitudinal studies are needed to further verify the dynamic changes of family resilience, and future research should focus on understanding family resilience from the dual perspectives of cancer patients and their caregivers, to provide comprehensive information for health professionals, and facilitate the development of effective family resilience intervention programs.

Dyadic effects of family resilience on quality of life in patients with lung cancer and spousal caregivers: The mediating role of dyadic coping

PURPOSE

This study explored the effects of family resilience on quality of life (QOL) and examined whether dyadic coping mediates these effects in patients with lung cancer and their spousal caregivers.

METHODS

In total, 313 dyads were recruited from three tertiary hospitals in Fujian Province, China, between March and July 2022. Study participants independently completed sociodemographic and clinical characteristics questionnaires, the Shortened Chinese version of the Family Resilience Assessment Scale, the Dyadic Coping Inventory, and the 8-Item Short-Form Health Survey. Data analysis utilized the actor-partner interdependence mediation model (APIMeM).

RESULTS

Family resilience of both patients with lung cancer and their spouses were positively and directly associated with their own QOL, which was mediated by dyadic coping. Family resilience did not significantly influence the partners' QOL. The APIMeM model produced acceptable fit (χ2/df = 2.857, RMSEA = 0.077, CFI = 0.992, TLI = 0.941, and NFI = 0.998).

CONCLUSION

Dyadic coping mediated both actor and partner effects between family resilience and QOL, and there was no significant direct partner effect between individual family resilience and their partner's QOL. The development of efficient family- or dyad-based interventions is essential to improve family resilience and encourage dyadic coping strategies among patients with lung cancer and their spousal caregivers who experience poor family resilience and low dyadic coping. Such interventions have the potential to enhance QOL for both parties.

Impact of caregivers' psychological and caregiving status on recruitment, conversion, and retention in stem cell therapy trials for cerebral palsy: A prospective survey analysis

AIM

To examine specific correlates that may affect retention outcomes of neural stem cell therapy trials in families screened for cerebral palsy.

DESIGN

A prospective correlational study.

METHODS

Primary caregivers completed surveys of psychological resilience, care burden and family caregiver tasks. The overall data and differences between groups were analysed and compared.

RESULTS

Resilience was negatively correlated with the care ability and closely related to the monthly household income and educational level of the caregivers. Factors affecting the final retention rate included the type of disease, number of combined disorders, monthly household income, primary caregivers' education level and resilience.

CONCLUSION

Economic level, literacy and psychological status may affect trial retention. These findings can provide tips for preparing for subsequent screening, identification and intervention in stem cell clinical trials.

IMPLICATION FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE

The study results may provide nursing care tips to make recruitment more efficient, reduce trial costs, support patient-centredness and accelerate trial progress.

Family resilience and its influencing factors among advanced cancer patients and their family caregivers: a multilevel modeling analysis

BACKGROUND

Cancer is highly prevalent worldwide. Family resilience is a positive variable that helps families burdened by advanced cancer to cope effectively. This study aimed to describe the family resilience of advanced cancer patients and caregivers in dyads and identify its influencing factors at the individual and dyadic levels.

METHODS

This multisite cross-sectional study was conducted in oncology units in five tertiary hospitals in China. A total of 270 advanced cancer patient-caregiver dyads were recruited between June 2020 and March 2021. Patients' and caregivers' family resilience was measured by the Family Resilience Assessment Scale. Data on potential influencing factors, including demographic and disease-related characteristics as well as family sense of coherence, psychological resilience, perceived social support, symptom burden, and caregiver burden, were collected. Multilevel modeling analysis was adopted to control for the interdependence of the dyads.

RESULTS

A total of 241 dyads were included in the data analysis. The mean ages of patients and caregivers were 53.96 (SD 15.37) and 45.18 (SD 13.79) years, respectively. Most caregivers were spouses and adult children (45.6% and 39.0%, respectively). Patients reported a higher mean family resilience score than caregivers (152.56 vs. 149.87, respectively). Undergoing fewer than two types of treatment and a lower symptom burden of patients predicted higher patient (B = -9.702, -0.134, respectively) and caregiver (B = -5.462, -0.096, respectively) family resilience. Patients also reported higher family resilience under the following conditions: 1) were on a medical insurance plan other than the new rural cooperative medical system (B = 6.089), 2) had a better family sense of coherence (B = 0.415), 3) whose caregivers were unmarried (B = 8.618), perceived lower social support (B = -0.145) and higher psychological resilience (B = 0.313). Caregivers who were ≤ 44 years old (B = -3.221), had similar previous caregiving experience (B = 7.706), and had a stronger family sense of coherence (B = 0.391) reported higher family resilience.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings highlight the importance of adopting a dyadic approach when caring for advanced cancer patients and their caregivers. Dyadic longitudinal research is suggested to discover more modifiable factors of family resilience and tailored interventions are needed to obtain optimal dyadic outcomes.

Dyadic effects of social support, illness uncertainty on anxiety and depression among lung cancer patients and their caregivers: a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVES

To explore the dyadic relationships between perceived social support, illness uncertainty, anxiety, and depression among lung cancer patients and their family caregivers. To examine the potential mediating role of illness uncertainty and the moderating role of disease stage in lung cancer patient-caregiver dyads.

METHODS

A total of 308 pairs of lung cancer patients and their family caregivers from a tertiary hospital in Wuxi, China, from January 2022 to June 2022 were included. Participants' perceived social support, illness uncertainty, anxiety, and depression were assessed by corresponding questionnaires. To test for dyadic relationships between the variables, we employed the actor-partner interdependence mediation model.

RESULTS

There were actor and partner effects of both patient and caregiver perceived social support on anxiety and depression, and illness uncertainty mediated the effect of perceived social support on anxiety and depression. Lung cancer stage plays a moderating role in lung cancer patient-caregiver dyads. There is an indirect positive partner effect of perceived social support from family caregivers on anxiety and depression in patients with early lung cancer; there is a direct or indirect negative partner effect of social support from family caregivers on anxiety and depression in patients with advanced lung cancer.

CONCLUSIONS

This study confirmed the dyadic interdependence between perceived social support, illness uncertainty, anxiety, and depression among lung cancer patients and family caregivers. Furthermore, studies on differences between different lung cancer stages may provide a theoretical basis for different dyadic supportive interventions based on lung cancer stages.

Social Support in a Cancer Patient-Informal Caregiver Dyad: A Scoping Review

Social support that includes promoting healthy behaviours throughout the oncology pathway, from diagnosis to treatment to survival, can leverage existing support networks and improve the health of patients and family members in supportive roles. This scoping review aimed to identify and summarise the impact of social support on the patient-informal caregiver relationship during cancer treatment. Inclusion criteria were related to a high focus on dyadic cancer patient-informal caregiver relationships, considering a population of adult cancer patients in active hospitalisation on an oncology ward, and published between 2012 and 2022 to get a portrait of the literature that might influence the current practice. A systematic search using the “Population, Concept, and Context” framework was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS, EBSCO Medline, and CINAHL: 13 articles from the 16,425 pre-qualified articles published between 2012 and 2022. The narrative synthesis of the included studies highlighted that social support, encompassing its different forms within the context of dyads, is frequently associated with an enhanced quality of life, hope, and resilience of both patients and informal caregivers. However, it is important to recognize that the support interventions provided to patients, particularly caregivers, were frequently not thoroughly evaluated or explained, and the sample sizes of the included studies were often limited. Therefore, this review clarified the social and clinical potential of social support for the patient-informal caregiver relationship, paving the way for future robust studies that require to be powered and designed on specific outcomes to allow informing the practice on specific recommendations.

The Role of Family Resilience and Pandemic Burnout on Mental Health: A Two-Wave Study in China

Family resilience refers to the processes through which a family adapts to and bounces back from adversities. Pandemic burnout refers to feeling emotionally exhausted, cynical, and lack of accomplishment during the pandemic and/or toward various preventive polices and measures. This two-wave, region-wide, longitudinal study included 796 adult participants residing in mainland China. Participants completed online surveys at two time points during the COVID-19 pandemic. Time 1 (T1) survey was conducted when the number of new infected cases in China stabilized, while Time 2 (T2) was conducted 5 months later when there was a sudden surge of new infected cases. Results of a hierarchical regression analysis revealed that the interaction and main effects of pandemic burnout and family resilience at T2 showed significant incremental prediction of depression and anxiety at T2, after controlling for demographic as well as individual and family resilience at T1. These results supported the hypotheses that current family resilience functions as a protective factor, whereas pandemic burnout functions as a risk factor of mental health during successive waves of pandemic outbreaks. In particular, family resilience at T2 mitigated the negative impact of high pandemic burnout on anxiety and depression at T2.

Tailored Psychological Interventions to Manage Body Image: An Opinion Study on Breast Cancer Survivors

OBJECTIVE

Oncological care affects the body strongly, even some years after therapies. Body image, as the mental representation of one's own body, is particularly affected by breast cancer, with a high level of dissatisfaction and negative perception. Literature has shown the effectiveness of various psychological interventions to promote body image in breast cancer survivors, dealing with inner sensations and related emotions and thoughts. The present opinion study presents BI issues and personalized psychological interventions to increase a positive BI in breast cancer survivors.

CONCLUSIONS

Implementing specific and personalized psychological interventions tailored on BI, the characteristics of oncological journey and emotional and cognitive issues is fundamental. Directions for clinical practice are given.

Investigation of the Effect of Sexual Attitudes and Attachment Styles of Spouses of Cancer Patients on Their Psychological Resilience

It is pointed out that the attachment styles of spouses are also very important in terms of coping with the psychological problems experienced in illness and sexual satisfaction. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of sexual attitudes and attachment styles of spouses of cancer patients on their psychological resilience. The research was carried out as a descriptive study based on the relational screening model between January and November 2021. A total of 429 spouses of cancer patients who met the inclusion criteria were included in the study. The data were collected online using the Participant Information Form, which was prepared by the researcher, Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA), Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (ECR-S), and Hendrick Sexual Attitude Scale (BSAS). Data analyses included descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U -test, Kruskal-Wallis, and linear regression using the SPSS 25.0 program. Two hundred forty-six women and 183 men were included in the study, and it has been detected that RSA scores of female participants were higher than male participants. In addition, a positive relation between RSA scores and ECR-S scores ( r = 0.247) and a negative relation between RSA and BSAS ( r = -0.414) were detected ( p < 0.05). It was determined that the psychological resilience of spouses of cancer patients was related to sexual attitudes and attachment styles.

Resilience of infertile families undergoing in vitro fertilization: An application of the double ABC-X model

BACKGROUND

Family resilience plays a crucial role in protecting the mental health and family stability of infertile patients. However, information associated with infertile families resilience is scarce. The double ABC-X model provides a roadmap for this, helps organize knowledge, and lays the foundation for knowledge development.

AIMS

To describe the current situation of family resilience of infertile women, and to test the predictive theoretical model of family resilience based on infertility stigma, individual resilience, coping style, and posttraumatic growth.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional study.

METHODS

A convenience sample of 372 infertile women undergoing in vitro fertilization were recruited between April and August 2020. The Chinese-Family Resilience Assessment Scale, Infertility Stigma Scale, Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, Chinese version of Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, and Chinese version of Post Traumatic Growth Inventory were used to measure family resilience, infertility stigma, individual resilience, coping style, and posttraumatic growth. Structural equation models were used to analyze the relationship among these variables.

RESULTS

The results showed that family resilience was related to infertility stigma, positive coping, and individual resilience. Moreover, the path analysis indicated that positive coping and individual resilience mediated the effects of infertility stigma on family resilience.

CONCLUSIONS

A high level of stigma among infertile women should be identified. Interventions for targeting positive coping and individual resilience might ultimately increase their family resilience.

Factors associated with posttraumatic growth among spouses of women diagnosed with gynaecological cancer: A cross-sectional study

AIM

The aim of this study was to explore the factors that are associated with posttraumatic growth among spouses of women diagnosed with gynaecological cancer.

DESIGN

A cross-sectional descriptive study.

METHODS

A convenience sample of 312 spouses of women diagnosed with gynaecological cancer was recruited from two comprehensive hospitals in China, from March 2018 to March 2020. Demographic characteristics, cancer-related characteristics, posttraumatic growth, perceived social support and coping were assessed using self-reported questionnaires. Descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis were performed. The methods were guided by the STROBE checklist.

RESULTS

The mean score of posttraumatic growth was 46.7 (standard deviation = 16.7). The associated factors of posttraumatic growth were spouses' age, perceived social support, problem-focused coping, dysfunctional coping (e.g. denial) and cancer treatment received by partners, which accounted for 34% of total posttraumatic growth score.

Reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire among community-dwelling disabled elderly individuals (WFRQ-CE)

Objective

To test the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire among community-dwelling disabled elderly individuals (WFRQ-CE).

Methods

Convenience sampling was used to select 566 dyads of disabled elderly individuals and their caregivers. The Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire Chinese Version (WFRQ-C) was tested among elderly individuals. The Family Care Capacity Scale for Elderly Patients (FCCSE) was used as a concurrent validation tool for the caregivers, and the Psychological Resilience Scale (CD-RISC-10), and the Social Support Assessment (SSRS-10) were used as concurrent validation tools for both the elderly individuals and the caregivers.

Results

Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) revealed four common factors-"Family belief," "Organization and problem solving," "Family communication," and "Utilization of external resources"-with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 56.94%. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) yielded the following fit indices: chi-square/freedom degree (χ2/df) = 2.007, Tucker Lewis index (TLI) = 0.900, incremental fit index (IFI) = 0.917, comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.916, parsimony goodness-of-fit index (PGFI) = 0.681, and root-mean-square error of approximation (RMSEA) = 0.060. The concurrent scales were significantly correlated with the WFRQ-C total score and the scores for each factor (r values between 0.23 and 0.60, P < 0.01). The Cronbach's alpha coefficient was 0.93 for the WFRQ-CE and 0.87, 0.83, 0.89, and 0.65 for the four factors; the retest reliability was 0.96 for the total scale and 0.95, 0.92, 0.92, and 0.95 for the four factors; the split-half reliability was 0.85 for the total scale, and 0.81, 0.78, 0.79, and 0.68 for the four factors.

Conclusion

The WFRQ-CE has good reliability and validity among community-dwelling disabled elderly individuals and can be used to evaluate the level of family resilience.

Family resilience and its predictors among patients with a first-ever stroke one month after stroke: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND

Understanding post-stroke family resilience would be helpful for healthcare professionals in planning interventions to facilitate family adaptation following stroke onset.

OBJECTIVE

To investigate the level of family resilience and its predictors among patients with the first stroke.

DESIGN

An explorative cross-sectional study.

METHODS

The study was conducted on 288 first stroke patients recruited from 7 tertiary hospitals in China between July 2020 and October 2020, and they were followed up one month after stroke. Data were collected using the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire, Self-efficacy for Managing Chronic Disease 6-item Scale, shortened Chinese version of Family Resilience Assessment Scale, and the Social Support Rating Scale. The predictive variables of family resilience were investigated using hierarchical regression analyses.

RESULTS

A total of 255 patients finished the survey with a response rate of 88.5%. The mean score of family resilience was 96.19 (SD = 9.87), highest in the dimension of maintaining a positive outlook and lowest in utilizing social resources. Patient subjective support (β = 0.22, P = 0.004), social support utilization (β = 0.13, P = 0.027), self-efficacy for managing disease (β = 0.27, P < 0.001), marriage status (divorced vs married)(β=-0.18, P = 0.002), and caregivers' relationship with patients (siblings vs spouse)(β=-0.18, P = 0.002) were predictors of family resilience.

CONCLUSION

Family resilience was low among stroke patients one month after the onset. Special attention should be paid to families of patients who were divorced, cared for by siblings, or have low social support or self-efficacy in managing stroke. Further research on family-based interventions may focus on increasing patient social support and promoting their self-efficacy in managing stroke.

Influence of home chaos on preschool migrant children's resilience: A moderated mediation model

Increasing attention has been drawn to the development of preschool migrant children's resilience recently. Resilience refers to the positive internal strengths and qualities of individuals in adverse situations, and is an essential psychological quality for preschool migrant children to cope with adversity. Home chaos as a risk factor, has an important impact on the development of individual's resilience, but the specific mechanisms under which home chaos works have yet to be explored, especially for preschool migrant children. Based on resilience model theory, 3,135 preschool migrant children and their families were surveyed and a moderated mediating effect mode was constructed to test the effect of home chaos on preschool migrant children's resilience. The results showed that after controlling for gender and age, home chaos significantly and negatively predicted preschool migrant children's resilience. Family resilience played a mediating role in the relationship between home chaos and preschool migrant children's resilience. Meanwhile, social support positively moderated the mediating effects of family resilience. The findings of this study suggested that low home chaos was conducive to promoting family resilience, which in turn fostered children's resilience, and that social support could play its protective role in weakening the negative effects of home chaos and this had certain guiding implications for the development of resilience in preschool migrant children.

Constructing and Verifying an Alexithymia Risk-Prediction Model for Older Adults with Chronic Diseases Living in Nursing Homes: A Cross-Sectional Study in China

Alexithymia is a critical global public health concern. This questionnaire-based cross-sectional study explored the risk factors of alexithymia in older adults living in nursing homes with chronic diseases. It also developed and evaluated an alexithymia risk-prediction model. A total of 203 older adults with chronic diseases were selected from seven nursing homes in Changsha, China, using simple random and cluster sampling. The participants were surveyed using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Geriatric Depression Scale-15 (GDS-15), Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS), and a socio-demographic characteristics questionnaire. The alexithymia total score was 43.85 ± 9.570, with an incidence rate of 8.9%. Alexithymia had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between social support and psychological resilience (the effect value was 0.12), accounting for 19.04% of the total effect. Gender, depression, and psychological resilience were the main independent influencing factors of alexithymia (p < 0.05). The area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC-ROC) curve of the risk-prediction model was 0.770. The participants, especially those who were male and depressed, exhibited a certain degree of alexithymia. Additionally, it partially mediated the association between social support and psychological resilience, which is a protective factor against alexithymia. The risk-prediction model showed good accuracy and discrimination. Hence, it can be used for preliminary screening of alexithymia in older adults with chronic diseases living in nursing homes.

Self-efficacy and positive coping mediate the relationship between social support and resilience in patients undergoing lung cancer treatment: A cross-sectional study

Background

The prognosis of patients undergoing lung cancer treatment might be influenced by mental health status. Resilience is one of the important predictors to reflect the mental health status. It has been shown that patients with higher levels of social support, self-care self-efficacy, and positive coping have greater resilience. This study aimed to determine the mediating role of self-efficacy and positive coping in the relationship between social support and psychological resilience in patients with lung cancer.

Method

This is a cross-sectional study that was conducted in in the oncology departments and thoracic surgical wards of four tertiary hospitals in Hunan Province, China, between November 2016 and November 2017. Three hundred and three patients who were undergoing treatment for lung cancer volunteered their participation in the study. Participants completed questionnaires, including the Chinese version of the Perceived Social Support Seale Scale, the Chinese version of Strategies Used by People to Promote Health Scale, and the Chinese version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale.

Results

Mediation analysis indicated that self-care self-efficacy and social support partially mediate the effect of social support on resilience. Direct paths from social support to self-efficacy, self-efficacy to positive coping, positive coping to psychological resilience, self-efficacy to psychological resilience, and social support to psychological resilience were significant (p &lt; 0.001). The indirect paths from social support to self-efficacy and self-efficacy to psychological resilience were also significant. The chain mediation from social support to self-efficacy, self-efficacy to positive coping, and positive coping to resilience were significant.

Conclusion

Self-efficacy and positive coping play an important role in the relationship between social support and resilience in patients receiving cancer treatment. Social support not only directly influenced psychological resilience but also indirectly influenced psychological resilience through self-efficacy and positive coping.

Resilience index improves prediction of 1-year decreased quality of life in breast cancer

BACKGROUND

Resilience is important in cancer survivorship and has great potential to predict long-term quality of life (QoL) in breast cancer. The study was designed to develop a new prediction model to estimate pretest probability (PTP) of 1-year decreased QoL combing Resilience Index (RI) and conventional risk factors.

METHODS

RI was extracted from 10-item Resilience Scale Specific to Cancer (RS-SC-10) based on the Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Patients were enrolled from Be Resilient to Breast Cancer (BRBC) and the prediction model was developed based on a sample of 506 consecutive patients and validated in an internal cohort (N1 = 314) and two external cohorts (N2 = 223 and N3 = 189). Integrated Discrimination Improvement (IDI) and Net Reclassification Improvement (NRI) were utilized to estimate the incremental value of RI.

RESULTS

RI improved prediction above conventional risk factors. AUC increased from 0.745 to 0.862 while IDI and NRI were 8.39% and 18.44% respectively (P < 0.0001 for all). Five predictors were included in the final model: RI, age, N stage, M stage, and baseline QoL. The new model demonstrated good calibration ability in the internal and external cohorts resulting in C-indexes of 0.862 (95%CI, 0.815-0.909), 0.828 (95%CI, 0.745-0.910), 0.880 (95%CI, 0.816-0.944), and 0.869 (95%CI, 0.796-0.941).

CONCLUSION

RI contributed to a more accurate estimation for PTP of 1-year decreased QoL above conventional risk factors and could help optimize decision making of treatment for breast cancer.

IMPLICATIONS FOR CANCER SURVIVORS

A promising prognostic indicator of RI could improve QoL-related management in Chinese patients with breast cancer.

Dyadic profiles of family resilience among patients with first-episode stroke: A longitudinal study of the first 6 months after stroke

BACKGROUND

The importance of family resilience in the recovery of stroke patients has been demonstrated in numerous studies. However, little is known about post-stroke family resilience.

AIMS

To investigate the family resilience of stroke patients from a patient-caregiver dyadic perspective during the first 6 months after stroke.

METHODS

A total of 288 dyads of patients diagnosed with a first-episode stroke and their principal caregivers were recruited from neurology departments of 7 tertiary hospitals in Shanghai and Shangqiu, China. Family resilience and family function were assessed during hospitalisation and at 1, 3 and 6 months after stroke. K-means cluster analysis was used to identify different clusters of family resilience based on family resilience of patients and caregivers during hospitalisation. The STROBE guidelines for observational studies were followed.

RESULTS

Three clusters of family resilience were identified with distinct trajectories: cluster of high resilience (HR), cluster of low resilience (LR) and cluster of discrepant resilience (DR). The level of family function was consistently highest in cluster HR and lowest in cluster with LR at four time points. Most (69.8%) families fell into the cluster with low resilience and low family function. Characteristics such as the Rankin scores and education level of patients, education level of caregivers, family monthly income and living district were different among the three clusters.

CONCLUSIONS

We concluded that family resilience was linked to the family functioning of patients with a first-episode stroke, however, the levels of resilience in most families were low. Factors, including the education level, family income and stroke severity of patients were revealed to influence the family resilience and its development.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

A resilience-focused approach to family-related treatment is beneficial for families. Therefore, understanding family resilience among stroke survivors is needed to inform the development of interventions for enhancing the recovery of stroke families.

Mediation effect of perceived social support and resilience between physical disability and depression in acute stroke patients in China: A cross-sectional survey

BACKGROUND

Physical disability is a cause of depression among acute stroke patients. Although previous studies have shown that physical disability, perceived social support, mental resilience, and post-stroke depression are significantly related, the interaction mechanism remains unclear.

METHODS

Convenience sampling was used to recruit participants from a tertiary hospital in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, China from October 2020 to May 2021. Participants completed the Barthel Index Rating Scale, Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support, Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale and Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale. We used the PROCESS macro for SPSS to determine the mediating effect of perceived social support and resilience between disability and depression.

RESULT

A total of 259 acute stroke patients participated in this study and completed the questionnaire survey. Stroke patients' BI scores was positively correlated with perceived social support (r = 0.26, P < 0.01) and resilience (r = 0.25, P < 0.01), and negatively correlated with depression (r = -0.47, P < 0.01). Perceived social support was positively correlated with resilience (r = 0.55, P < 0.01) and negatively correlated with depression (r = -0.41, P < 0.01). Resilience was negatively correlated with depression (r = -0.43, P < 0.01). Perceived social support and resilience played a mediating role of 10.27% and 5.74% of the total effects of disability and post-stroke depression, respectively. Meanwhile, the chain mediating effect of perceived social support and resilience (7%) was also significant.

LIMITATIONS

The cross-sectional study design limited the inference of causal relationships between variables. This study used convenience sampling to select research participants from a single hospital, they were all acute stroke patients from the same region of China. Participants in our study were in high BI status, and thirty of them had a low level of education, which may contribute to the possibility of selection bias. Meanwhile, the low level of education and the poor eye-sight of old people prevents them from completing the questionnaire by themselves. So we collected data in the form of "researcher reading questionnaire items and recording participant responses" for the majority of participants (257 subjects), and only 2 participants completed it independently. Furthermore, the findings of this study may not apply to stroke survivors from other backgrounds.

CONCLUSION

This study found that disability can directly predict post-stroke depression, and indirectly predict post-stroke depression through the mediating effect of perceived social support and resilience, and the chain mediating effect of perceived social support-resilience. Therefore, reducing the degree of disability of acute stroke patients and improving their perceived social support and resilience may help prevent post-stroke depression.

Factors influencing the burden on spousal caregivers of breast cancer survivors

Purpose

To examine the status of spouses’ burdens of caring for breast cancer survivors and explore the relationships between social support, family resilience, breast cancer survivors’ individual resilience, and caregiver burden.

Methods

A cross-sectional study on 315 young and middle-aged breast cancer survivors and their spousal caregivers was conducted at eight comprehensive Southwest China hospitals. The caregivers completed the Chinese Version of the Family Resilience Assessment Scale, the Perceived Social Support Scale, and the Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview, while breast cancer survivors completed the shortened Chinese version of the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale. Structural equation modeling was used to evaluate the relationships among social support, family resilience, survivors’ individual resilience, and caregiver burden.

Results

Caregiver burden (45.76 ± 14.66) was found to be severe. Social support, family resilience, and individual resilience were significantly negatively associated with caregiver burden (β =  − 0.421, P < 0.001; β =  − 0.208, P < 0.001; and β =  − 0.444, P < 0.001, respectively). Individual resilience not only partially mediated the relationship between family resilience and caregiver burden (b =  − 0.052; 95% confidence interval, − 0.110, − 0.018), but also partially mediated the relationship between support and caregiver burden (b =  − 0.045; 95% confidence interval, − 0.102, − 0.011).

Conclusions

The findings suggest that higher social support, family resilience, and individual resilience tend to ease caregivers’ burden. Healthcare workers should have an in-depth understanding of the care needs of survivors, actively contact social security departments and social organizations to provide financial, technical, and emotional support, and provide family-based care-skills training and psychological counseling to reduce spousal caregivers’ burdens.

Assessment of Effect of Perceived Social Support on School Readiness, Mental Wellbeing, and Self-Esteem: Mediating Role of Psychological Resilience

Objective of this study is to investigate the impact of perceived social support on the self-esteem, mental wellbeing, and school readiness of left-behind (LB) children. It further aims at understanding the mediating role of psychological resilience between the relationships of perceived social support and self-esteem, mental wellbeing, and school readiness. For this purpose, population frame of the LB children between the ages of 8-12 years in Mainland China was taken. The sample size of 335 was taken to reach the findings through partial least square (PLS) structural equation modeling. The SmartPLS has been used to analyze the data. The results obtained in this study have shown that the perceived social support plays a very significant role in enhancing the mental wellbeing, self-esteem, and school readiness of the LB children. It has also been found that the perceived social support plays a positive role in the psychological resilience. Furthermore, it has also been found that the psychological resilience is an important predictor of self-esteem and school readiness. Further, the psychological resilience has proved to be significant mediator between the relationship of the perceived social support and self-esteem; and also between the relationship of the perceived social support and school readiness.

Exploring Social Support Networks and Interactions of Young Adult and LGBTQIA+ Cancer Survivors and Care Partners

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to describe the social support networks and daily support interactions of cancer-affected individuals, including young adult (YA) and LGBTQIA+ survivors and care partners.

Methods

Participants were recruited at two United States cancer centers and via social media for a pilot study testing a novel online method for collecting prospective, daily social support interaction data (N=28). All participants were aged 18+; survivors had a current or recent cancer diagnosis and were engaged in treatment and/or services; care partners were identified by the survivors. Enrollment also purposefully targeted YA and LGBTQIA+ survivors. Social network data (up to 10 members) were assessed at baseline. Daily online surveys assessed support interactions between participants and specific network members over 14 days. Descriptive statistics summarized data and explored between-group (YA/non-YA, LGBTQIA+/non-LGBTQIA+) differences in social network characteristics (size, heterogeneity, density, centralization, cohesion) and support interactions (support source and type).

Results

There were no significant differences between YA and non-YA participants on any measures. LGBTQIA+ participants’ support networks were less dense (Mdn=0.69 vs. 0.82, p=.02), less cohesive (Mdn=0.85 vs. 0.91,.02), more centered on the participant (Mdn=0.40 vs. 0.24, p=.047), and included more LGBTQIA+ members (Mdn=0.35 vs. 0.00, p<.001). LGBTQIA+ participants reported having more interactions with LGBTQIA+ network members (Mdn=14.0 vs. Mdn=0.00, p<.001) and received significantly more of all types of support from LGBTQIA+ vs. non-LGBTQIA+ members. LGBTQIA+ participants also reported receiving more appraisal support than non-LGBTQIA+ (Mdn 21.64 vs. 9.12, p=.008) including more appraisal support from relatives (Mdn=11.73 vs 6.0, p+.037).

Conclusions

Important information related to support access, engagement, and needs is embedded within the everyday contexts of the social networks of cancer-affected people. Individualized, accessible, and prospective assessment could help illuminate how their “real world” support systems are working and identify specific strengths and unmet needs. These insights would inform the development of more culturally competent and tailored interventions to help people understand and leverage their unique support systems. This is particularly critical for groups like YA and LGBTQIA+ survivors and care partners that are underserved by formal support services and underrepresented in cancer, caregiving, and social support research.
