Abstract
Ultrathin two-dimensional NiS/Ni(OH)2 nanosheets (NiS/Ni(OH)2 NSs) were successfully filled within the hollow interiors of ammonium polyacrylate-functionalized polypyrrole nanotubes (NH4PA/PPyNTs) by a simple solvothermal method. This kind of novel hierarchical nanostructures with typical structural features of a nanoconfined system, denoted by NiS/Ni(OH)2/NH4PA/PPyNTs, were prepared by two main sections: polyacrylic acid (PAA) was first polymerized on PPyNTs containing vinyl groups, and the obtained PAA/PPyNTs exhibited a typical Janus structure, whose external surface was covered with carboxyl groups and the internal surface was still covered with PPy chains; second, Ni2+ ions as a precursor were facilely combined with -NH- segments in PPy chains by the coordination interaction under the solvothermal environment; therefore, NiS/Ni(OH)2 NSs (<1 nm) were well distributed on the internal surface of NH4PA/PPyNTs by the in situ growth. Because of the synergistic effects of ionizable NH4PA, PPy with good conductivity, NiS and Ni(OH)2 with electrocatalytical activity, as well as the nanoconfinement effect, the obtained NiS/Ni(OH)2@NH4PA/PPyNTs exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for detecting glucose. Sufficiently thin shells composed of ionizable NH4PA and good conductive PPyNTs can not only promote the electronic transmission effectively during the electrochemical detection of glucose but also hardly limit the transport of glucose and products. In addition, ultrathin NiS/Ni(OH)2 NSs may further enhance the electrocatalytic performance for glucose because of the more exposed active sites with the large surface area. Therefore, NiS/Ni(OH)2@NH4PA/PPyNTs can be applied as a good electrode material with stability and sensitivity for building a nonenzymatic glucose sensor.

Abstract
This review encompasses the mechanisms of electrochemical glucose detection and recent advances in non-enzymatic glucose sensors based on a variety of materials ranging from platinum, gold, metal alloys/adatom, non-precious transition metal/metal oxides to glucose-specific organic materials. It shows that the discovery of new materials based on unique nanostructures have not only provided the detailed insight into non-enzymatic glucose oxidation, but also demonstrated the possibility of direct detection in whole blood or interstitial fluids. We critically evaluate various aspects of non-enzymatic electrochemical glucose sensors in terms of significance as well as performance. Beyond laboratory tests, the prospect of commercialization of non-enzymatic glucose sensors is discussed.

Abstract
The 3D NiO hollow sphere/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composite was synthesized according to the coordinating etching and precipitating process by using Cu2O nanosphere/graphene oxide (GO) composite as template. The morphology, structure, and composition of the materials were characterized by SEM, TEM, HRTEM, XPS, and Raman spectra, and the electrochemical properties were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and amperometry. Moreover, the electrochemical activity of the composite materials with different morphologies were also investigated, which indicating a better combination of the NiO hollow sphere and the rGO. Used as glucose sensing material, the 3D NiO hollow sphere/rGO composite modified electrode exhibits high sensitivity of ~2.04 mA mM−1 cm−2, quick response time of less than 5 s, good stability, selectivity, and reproducibility. Its application for the detection of glucose in human blood serum sample shows acceptable recovery and R.S.D. values. The outstanding glucose sensing performance should be attributed to the unique 3D hierarchical porous superstructure of the composite, especially for its enhanced electron-transfer kinetic properties.

Abstract
Three-dimensional nickel-iron (3-D/Ni-Fe) nanostructures are exciting candidates for various applications because they produce more reaction-active sites than 1-D and 2-D nanostructured materials and exhibit attractive optical, electrical and catalytic properties. In this work, freestanding 3-D/Ni-Fe interconnected hierarchical nanosheets, hierarchical nanospheres, and porous nanospheres are directly grown on a flexible carbon fiber paper (CFP) substrate by a single-step hydrothermal process. Among the nanostructures, 3-D/Ni-Fe interconnected hierarchical nanosheets show excellent electrochemical properties because of its high conductivity, large specific active surface area, and mesopores on its walls (vide infra). The 3-D/Ni-Fe hierarchical nanosheet array modified CFP substrate is further explored as a novel electrode for electrochemical non-enzymatic glucose sensor application. The 3-D/Ni-Fe hierarchical nanosheet arrays exhibit significant catalytic activity towards the electrochemical oxidation of glucose, as compared to the 3-D/Ni-Fe hierarchical nanospheres, and porous nanospheres. The 3-D/Ni-Fe hierarchical nanosheet arrays can access a large amount of glucose molecules on their surface (mesopore walls) for an efficient electrocatalytic oxidation process. Moreover, 3-D/Ni-Fe hierarchical nanosheet arrays showed higher sensitivity (7.90 μA μM(-1) cm(-2)) with wide linear glucose concentration ranging from 0.05 μM to 0.2 mM, and the low detection limit (LOD) of 0.031 μM (S/N = 3) is achieved by the amperometry method. Further, the 3-D/Ni-Fe hierarchical nanosheet array modified CFP electrode can be demonstrated to have excellent selectivity towards the detection of glucose in the presence of 500-fold excess of major important interferents. All these results indicate that 3-D/Ni-Fe hierarchical nanosheet arrays are promising candidates for non-enzymatic glucose sensing.

Abstract
Glucose and calcium ion play key roles in human bodies. The needlelike NiCo2O4 nanostructures are in situ deposited on three-dimensional graphene foam (3DGF) by a facile hydrothermal procedure. The structure and morphology of the hierarchical NiCo2O4/3DGF are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. With the self-standing NiCo2O4/3DGF as electrochemical electrode, it can realize the high-sensitivity detections for glucose and calcium ion. The limit of detection can reach 0.38 and 4.45 μM, respectively. In addition, the electrochemical electrode presents excellent selectivity for glucose and calcium ion. This study demonstrates that NiCo2O4/3DGF is a unique and promising material for practical application in both glucose and calcium ion sensing.

Abstract
Glucose detection plays very important roles in diagnostics and management of diabetes. The search for novel catalytic materials with appropriate architectures is the key step in the fabrication of highly sensitive glucose sensors. In this work, α-Ni(OH)2 roselike structures (Ni(OH)2-RS) assembled from nanosheet building blocks were successfully synthesized by a hydrothermal method through the hydrolysis of nickel chloride in the mixed solvents of water and ethanol with the assistance of polyethylene glycol (PEG). The structure and morphology of the roselike α-Ni(OH)2 were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm measurement. TEM and FE-SEM images showed that the synthesized Ni(OH)2 was roselike and the size of the leaf-shaped nanosheet was about 5 nm in thickness, which leads to larger active surface areas and faster electron transfer for the detection of glucose. Compared with the bare GCE and bulk Ni(OH)2/GCE, the Ni(OH)2-RS/GCE had higher catalytic activity toward the oxidation of glucose. Under the optimal conditions, the Ni(OH)2-RS/GCE offers a variety of merits, such as a wide linear response window for glucose concentrations ranging from 0.87 μM to 10.53 mM, short response time (3s), a lower detection limit of 0.08 μM (S/N=3), as well as long term stability and repeatability.

Abstract
Three-dimensional graphene foam (3DGF) is a superior sensing material because of its high conductivity, large specific surface area and wide electrochemical potential windows. In this work, hexagonal Ni(OH)2 nanosheets are deposited on the surface of chemical vapor deposition-grown 3DGF through a facial hydrothermal process without any auxiliary reagents. The morphology and structure of the composite are characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Based on the Ni(OH)2/3DGF composite, a free-standing electrochemical electrode is fabricated. Being employed as a nonenzymatic glucose detection electrochemical electrode, it exhibits a high sensitivity (∼2.65 mA mM(-1) cm(-2)), low detection limit (0.34 μM) and excellent selectivity with a linear response from 1 μM to 1.17 mM. The excellent sensing properties of the Ni(OH)2/3DGF electrode may be attributed to the synergistic effect of the high electrocatalytic activity of Ni(OH)2 nanosheets and the high conductivity and large surface area of 3DGF.

Abstract
Highly sensitive and selective nonenzymatic detection of glucose has been achieved using a novel disposable electrochemical sensor based on three-dimensional (3D) porous nickel nanostructures. The enzyme-free sensor was fabricated through in situ growing porous nickel networks on a homemade screen-printed carbon electrode substrate via electrochemically reducing the Ni(2+) precursor, along with continuously liberating hydrogen bubbles. The resulting nickel-modified electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), and electrochemical techniques. Cyclic voltammetric, alternating-current impedance, and amperometric methods were used to investigate the catalytic properties of the assembled sensor for glucose electro-oxidation in alkaline media. Under optimized conditions, the enzymeless sensor exhibited excellent performance for glucose analysis selectively, offering a much wider linear range (from 0.5 μM to 4 mM), an extremely low detection limit (0.07 μM, signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of 3), and an ultrahigh sensitivity of 2.9 mA/(cm(2) mM). Importantly, favorable reproducibility and long-term performance stability were obtained thanks to the robust frameworks. Application of the proposed sensor in monitoring blood glucose was also demonstrated.

Abstract
The porous Ni/β-Ni(OH)2 superstructures have been successfully prepared via a simple, fast one-pot solvothermal route in the presence of cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), using NiCl2·6H2O and NaBH4 as the original reactants. The reaction was carried out in ethylene glycol at 170°C for 1h. The morphology of the obtained product could be controlled by adjusting the reaction time and the surfactant. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS), Infrared (IR) spectrometry, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET). The electrochemical property of the as-obtained superstructures was investigated through the cyclic voltammogram (CV) measurements. It was found that the as-obtained porous Ni/β-Ni(OH)2 superstructures exhibited good electrochemical properties and could be used as electrochemical sensors for the detection of some organic small molecules such as hydrochinone, pyrocatechol, and glucose.
