Mortality risks from a spectrum of causes associated with wide-ranging exposure to fine particulate matter: A case-crossover study in Beijing, China

The short-term effects of individual and mixed ambient air pollutants on suicide mortality: A case-crossover study

It is critical to explore intervenable environmental factors in suicide mortality. Based on 30,688 suicide cases obtained from the Mortality Surveillance System of the Jiangsu Provincial Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, we utilized a case-crossover design, and found that the OR of suicide deaths increased by a maximum of 0.71 % (95 % CI: 0.09 %, 1.32 %), 0.68 % (95 % CI: 0.12 %, 1.25 %), 0.77 % (95 % CI: 0.19 %, 1.37 %), 2.95 % (95 % CI: 1.62 %, 4.29 %), 4.18 % (95 % CI: 1.55 %, 6.88 %), and 0.93 % (95 % CI: 0.10 %, 1.77 %), respectively, for per 10 μg/m3 increase in the particulate matter (PM) with diameters ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5), PM with diameters ≤ 10 µm (PM10), ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and per 0.1 mg/m3 increase in carbon monoxide (CO) concentrations with the conditional logistic regression analysis. People living in county-level cities were more susceptible. Particularly, a significant positive association was found between air pollutant mixture exposure and suicide deaths (OR=1.04,95 % CI: 1.01, 1.06). The excess fraction of suicide deaths due to air pollution reached a maximum of 8.07 %. In conclusion, we found associations between individual and mixed ambient air pollutants and suicide deaths, informing the development of integrated air pollution management and targeted measures for suicide prevention and intervention. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: As a major contributor to the global burden of disease, air pollution was confirmed by accumulating studies to have adverse impact on mental health, and potentially lead to suicide deaths. However, systematic studies on the association between air pollution and suicide mortality are lacking. We explored the associations of multiple air pollutants and pollution mixtures with suicide deaths and assessed excess suicide mortality due to air pollution, emphasizing the importance of air pollution control on suicide prevention. Our study provides evidence to support mechanistic studies on the association between air pollution and suicide, and informs comprehensive air pollution management.

Evaluating the mortality and health rate caused by the PM2.5 pollutant in the air of several important Iranian cities and evaluating the effect of variables with a linear time series model

All over the world, the level of special air pollutants that have the potential to cause diseases is increasing. Although the relationship between exposure to air pollutants and mortality has been proven, the health risk assessment and prediction of these pollutants have a therapeutic role in protecting public health, and need more research. The purpose of this research is to evaluate the ill-health caused by PM2.5 pollution using AirQ + software and to evaluate the different effects on PM2.5 with time series linear modeling by R software version 4.1.3 in the cities of Arak, Esfahan, Ahvaz, Tabriz, Shiraz, Karaj and Mashhad during 2019-2020. The pollutant hours, meteorology, population and mortality information were calculated by the Environmental Protection Organization, Meteorological Organization, Statistics Organization and Statistics and Information Technology Center of the Ministry of Health, Treatment and Medical Education for 24 h of PM2.5 pollution with Excel software. In addition, having 24 h of PM2.5 pollutants and meteorology is used to the effect of variables on PM2.5 concentration. The results showed that the highest and lowest number of deaths due to natural deaths, ischemic heart disease (IHD), lung cancer (LC), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) and stroke in The effect of disease with PM2.5 pollutant in Ahvaz and Arak cities was 7.39-12.32%, 14.6-17.29%, 16.48-8.39%, 10.43-18.91%, 12.21-22.79% and 14.6-18.54 % respectively. Another result of this research was the high mortality of the disease compared to the mortality of the nose. The analysis of the results showed that by reducing the pollutants in the cities of Karaj and Shiraz, there is a significant reduction in mortality and linear modeling provides a suitable method for air management planning.

Mortality risks from a spectrum of causes associated with sand and dust storms in China

Sand and Dust Storms (SDS) pose considerable health risks worldwide. Previous studies only indicated risk of SDS on overall mortality. This nationwide multicenter time-series study aimed to examine SDS-associated mortality risks extensively. We analyzed 1,495,724 deaths and 2024 SDS events from 1 February to 31 May (2013-2018) in 214 Chinese counties. The excess mortality risks associated with SDS were 7.49% (95% CI: 3.12-12.05%), 5.40% (1.25-9.73%), 4.05% (0.41-7.83%), 3.45% (0.34-6.66%), 3.37% (0.28-6.55%), 3.33% (0.07-6.70%), 8.90% (4.96-12.98%), 12.51% (6.31-19.08%), and 11.55% (5.55-17.89%) for ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke, hypertensive heart disease, myocardial infarction, acute myocardial infarction, acute ischemic heart disease, respiratory disease, chronic lower respiratory disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), respectively. SDS had significantly added effects on ischemic stroke, chronic lower respiratory disease, and COPD mortality. Our results suggest the need to implement public health policy against SDS.

Short-term exposure to PM2.5 and 1.5 million deaths: a time-stratified case-crossover analysis in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area

BACKGROUND

Satellite-based PM2.5 predictions are being used to advance exposure science and air-pollution epidemiology in developed countries; including emerging evidence about the impacts of PM2.5 on acute health outcomes beyond the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and the potential modifying effects from individual-level factors in these associations. Research on these topics is lacking in low and middle income countries. We aimed to explore the association between short-term exposure to PM2.5 with broad-category and cause-specific mortality outcomes in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA), and potential effect modification by age, sex, and SES characteristics in such associations.

METHODS

We used a time-stratified case-crossover study design with 1,479,950 non-accidental deaths from the MCMA for the period of 2004-2019. Daily 1 × 1 km PM2.5 (median = 23.4 μg/m3; IQR = 13.6 μg/m3) estimates from our satellite-based regional model were employed for exposure assessment at the sub-municipality level. Associations between PM2.5 with broad-category (organ-system) and cause-specific mortality outcomes were estimated with distributed lag conditional logistic models. We also fit models stratifying by potential individual-level effect modifiers including; age, sex, and individual SES-related characteristics namely: education, health insurance coverage, and job categories. Odds ratios were converted into percent increase for ease of interpretation.

RESULTS

PM2.5 exposure was associated with broad-category mortality outcomes, including all non-accidental, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, respiratory, and digestive mortality. A 10-μg/m3 PM2.5 higher cumulative exposure over one week (lag06) was associated with higher cause-specific mortality outcomes including hypertensive disease [2.28% (95%CI: 0.26%-4.33%)], acute ischemic heart disease [1.61% (95%CI: 0.59%-2.64%)], other forms of heart disease [2.39% (95%CI: -0.35%-5.20%)], hemorrhagic stroke [3.63% (95%CI: 0.79%-6.55%)], influenza and pneumonia [4.91% (95%CI: 2.84%-7.02%)], chronic respiratory disease [2.49% (95%CI: 0.71%-4.31%)], diseases of the liver [1.85% (95%CI: 0.31%-3.41%)], and renal failure [3.48% (95%CI: 0.79%-6.24%)]. No differences in effect size of associations were observed between age, sex and SES strata.

CONCLUSIONS

Exposure to PM2.5 was associated with non-accidental, broad-category and cause-specific mortality outcomes beyond the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, including specific death-causes from the digestive and genitourinary systems, with no indication of effect modification by individual-level characteristics.

Mortality Risk and Burden From a Spectrum of Causes in Relation to Size-Fractionated Particulate Matters: Time Series Analysis

BACKGROUND

There is limited evidence regarding the adverse impact of particulate matters (PMs) on multiple body systems from both epidemiological and mechanistic studies. The association between size-fractionated PMs and mortality risk, as well as the burden of a whole spectrum of causes of death, remains poorly characterized.

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to examine the wide range of susceptible diseases affected by different sizes of PMs. We also assessed the association between PMs with an aerodynamic diameter less than 1 µm (PM1), 2.5 µm (PM2.5), and 10 µm (PM10) and deaths from 36 causes in Guangzhou, China.

METHODS

Daily data were obtained on cause-specific mortality, PMs, and meteorology from 2014 to 2016. A time-stratified case-crossover approach was applied to estimate the risk and burden of cause-specific mortality attributable to PMs after adjusting for potential confounding variables, such as long-term trend and seasonality, relative humidity, temperature, air pressure, and public holidays. Stratification analyses were further conducted to explore the potential modification effects of season and demographic characteristics (eg, gender and age). We also assessed the reduction in mortality achieved by meeting the new air quality guidelines set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

RESULTS

Positive and monotonic associations were generally observed between PMs and mortality. For every 10 μg/m3 increase in 4-day moving average concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10, the risk of all-cause mortality increased by 2.00% (95% CI 1.08%-2.92%), 1.54% (95% CI 0.93%-2.16%), and 1.38% (95% CI 0.95%-1.82%), respectively. Significant effects of size-fractionated PMs were observed for deaths attributed to nonaccidental causes, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, neoplasms, chronic rheumatic heart diseases, hypertensive diseases, cerebrovascular diseases, stroke, influenza, and pneumonia. If daily concentrations of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 reached the WHO target levels of 10, 15, and 45 μg/m3, 7921 (95% empirical CI [eCI] 4454-11,206), 8303 (95% eCI 5063-11,248), and 8326 (95% eCI 5980-10690) deaths could be prevented, respectively. The effect estimates of PMs were relatively higher during hot months, among female individuals, and among those aged 85 years and older, although the differences between subgroups were not statistically significant.

CONCLUSIONS

We observed positive and monotonical exposure-response curves between PMs and deaths from several diseases. The effect of PM1 was stronger on mortality than that of PM2.5 and PM10. A substantial number of premature deaths could be preventable by adhering to the WHO's new guidelines for PMs. Our findings highlight the importance of a size-based strategy in controlling PMs and managing their health impact.

Residential greenness mitigates mortality risk from short-term airborne particulate exposure: An individual-level case-crossover study

BACKGROUND

Studies suggested that greenness could reduce death risks related to ambient exposure to particulate matter (PM), while the available evidence was mixed across the globe and substantially exiguous in low- and middle-income countries. By conceiving an individual-level case-crossover study in central China, this analysis primarily aimed to quantify PM-mortality associations and examined the modification effect of greenness on the relationship.

METHODS

We investigated a total of 177,058 nonaccidental death cases from 12 counties in central China, 2008-2012. Daily residential exposures to PM2.5 (aerodynamic diameter <2.5 µm), PMc (aerodynamic diameter between 2.5 and 10 µm), and PM10 (aerodynamic diameter <10 µm) were assessed at a 1 × 1-km resolution through satellite-derived machine-learning models. Residential surrounding greenness was assessed using satellite-derived enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) at multiple buffer sizes (250, 500, and 1000 m). To quantify the acute mortality risks associated with short-term exposure to PM2.5, PMc, and PM10, a time-stratified case-crossover design was utilized in conjunction with a conditional logistic regression model in our main analyses. To investigate the effect modification of greenness on PM-mortality associations, we grouped death cases into low, medium, and high greenness levels using cutoffs of 25th and 75th percentiles of NDVI or EVI exposure, and examined potential effect heterogeneity in PM-related mortality risks among these groups.

RESULTS

Mean concentrations (standard deviation) on the day of death were 73.8 (33.4) μg/m3 for PM2.5, 43.9 (17.3) μg/m3 for PMc, and 117.5 (44.9) μg/m3 for PM10. Size-fractional PM exposures were consistently exhibited significant associations with elevated risks of nonaccidental and circulatory mortality. For every increase of 10-μg/m3 in PM exposure, percent excess risks of nonaccidental and circulatory mortality were 0.271 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.010, 0.533) and 0.487 (95% CI: 0.125, 0.851) for PM2.5 at lag-01 day, 0.731 (95% CI: 0.108, 1.359) and 1.140 (95% CI: 0.267, 2.019) for PMc at lag-02 day, and 0.271 (95% CI: 0.010, 0.533) and 0.386 (95% CI: 0.111, 0.662) for PM10 at lag-01 day, respectively. Compared to participants in the low-level greenness areas, those being exposed to higher greenness were found to be at lower PM-associated risks of nonaccidental and circulatory mortality. Consistent evidence for alleviated risks in medium or high greenness group was observed in subpopulations of female and younger groups (age <75).

CONCLUSIONS

Short-term exposure to particulate air pollution was associated with elevated risks of nonaccidental and circulatory death, and individuals residing in higher neighborhood greenness possessed lower risk of PM-related mortality. These findings emphasized the potential public health advantages through incorporating green spaces into urban design and planning.

The effects of short-term exposure to air pollution on mortality in Baotou, China, during 2015-2019

Air pollution was considered one of the main causes linked to increased morbidity and mortality around the world. This study aimed to estimate the effect of air pollutants on daily death in Baotou city of Inner Mongolia. Daily deaths data were provided by Baotou Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the years 2015-2019 (Baotou CDC). The air pollutants, PM_2.5, PM₁₀, NO₂, SO₂, CO and maximum 8-h average concentrations of O₃, came from the eight environmental monitoring stations in Baotou city. Time-series plots were used to exploit the trend of air pollutants at calendar time. Generalized additive model was used to estimate the effect of air pollutants on daily death. Restricted cubic spline was employed to investigate non-line relationships between air pollutants and daily death. After adjusting the meteorological factors, non-accidental daily deaths were related to PM_2.5 (ER = 0.074%) and PM₁₀ (ER = 0.023%), respectively. In stratified analysis, population aged over 65 years and females were more sensitive to air pollutants exposure and warm season might make people more susceptible to air pollutants compared with cold season. PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ increase the risk of non-accidental and cardiovascular daily death, but not respiratory daily death.

Association between air temperature and emergency admission for esophagogastric variceal bleeding: a case-crossover study in Beijing, China

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

Studies concerning the impact of air temperature on esophagogastric variceal bleeding (EGVB) have yielded conflicting results. Our study aimed to evaluate the correlation between air temperature and EGVB.

METHODS

A time-stratified case-crossover study design was performed. Patients received emergency gastroscopic hemostasis for upper gastrointestinal bleeding between Jan 1, 2014, and Dec 31, 2018 in the Fifth Medical Center of PLA General Hospital were enrolled. Conditional logistic regression analysis was applied to determine the association between air temperature and EGVB for different lag structures.

RESULTS

A total of 4204 cirrhotic patients diagnosed with EGVB and received emergency gastroscopic hemostasis were enrolled. The mean number of daily EGVB cases peaked in October (2.65 ± 1.69) and fell to the lowest level in July (1.86 ± 1.38), and was 2.38 ± 1.58 in spring, 2.00 ± 1.46 in summer, 2.37 ± 1.58 in autumn, and 2.45 ± 1.58 in winter, respectively (P < 0.0001). In conditional logistic regression analysis, no significant correlations between air temperature and EGVB were observed and no significant difference were found when stratified by age, sex, etiology, liver cancer status, and grade of varices.

CONCLUSION

Emergency admission for EGVB showed significant monthly and seasonal fluctuations, while in conditional logistic regression analysis, no association between minimum temperature and emergency admission for EGVB were observed.

Ambient air pollution and the risk of neurological diseases in residential areas near multi-purposed industrial complexes of korea: A population-based cohort study

Emerging evidence suggest that long-term exposure to air pollution may induce adverse effects on the central nervous system. However, no study explored the associations in large industrial complex (IC) areas which are one of the major contributors to air pollution. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the pollution status and the association between residential proximity and incidence of neurological diseases near two major ICs characterized as multi-purposed ICs in Korea. A retrospective cohort of residents near the ICs was constructed using Korea's health insurance data and monitored from 2008 to 2019. Emission amounts of the ICs and the air pollution status in the nearby (exposed) and remote (control) area were evaluated using data from national regulatory networks, and hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for neurological diseases of the exposed group compared to the control group were calculated using Cox proportional regression models. Overall, the complexes emitted large amounts of VOCs, CO, NOx, and PM10, and annual levels of ambient PM (2.5, 10), gaseous substances (NO₂, SO₂), VOCs and PAHs were higher in the exposed area compared to the control and/or the national average. The risk of inflammatory disease of the CNS (G00-09) and extrapyramidal and movement disorders (G20-26) were higher in the exposed area with a HR (95% CI) of 1.36 (1.10-1.68) and 1.33 (1.27-1.39) respectively. Among the subclasses, other extrapyramidal and movement disorders (G25) and epilepsy (G40) were associated with higher risks in the exposed area (HR (95%CI): 1.11 (1.04-1.18), 1.08 (1.00-1.16)) after adjusting for potential confounders. These results suggest that people living near ICs are more likely to be exposed to higher air pollution levels and have higher risks of developing several neurological disorders. However, further epidemiological studies in these industrial areas supplemented with other indicators of environmental exposure and control of other diverse factors are warranted.

Association between short-term exposure to extreme humidity and painful diabetic neuropathy: a case-crossover analysis

Painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus, which reduces the quality of life. However, the association between PDN and environmental factors, especially ambient humidity, remains unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the impact of extreme humidity events on PDN. Data on PDN-related hospital admissions to two tertiary hospitals in Hefei, China (2014-2019) were obtained. A distributed lag non-linear model with a case-crossover design was used to quantitatively estimate the effects of ambient humidity on PDN, and the results were stratified by sex and age. The 1st, 10th, 90th, and 99th percentiles of relative humidity (RHU) were defined as extreme humidity, and the average relative humidity (74.94%) was set as the reference value. Non-linear exposure-response curves between the RHU and PDN cases were obtained. Extreme humidity (92%) had a significant effect on PDN with a relative risk (RR) of 1.13 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-1.26) on a particular day, which increased with the RHU (RR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.02-1.45 at 98% extreme humidity). Stratification analysis showed that women (RR: 1.38, 95% CI: 1.07-1.77) and patients aged < 65 years (RR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.01-1.57) were highly susceptible to this effect on the same day. The results suggest that extreme humidity is a crucial trigger for PDN onset in diabetes patients. Furthermore, the effects vary with sex and age. This study provides detailed evidence of the adverse effects of extreme weather on diabetes patients.

Explainable Gated Recurrent Unit to explore the effect of co-exposure to multiple air pollutants and meteorological conditions on mental health outcomes

Mental health conditions have the potential to be worsened by air pollution or other climate-sensitive factors. Few studies have empirically examined those associations when we faced to co-exposures, as well as interaction effects. There would be an urgent need to use deep learning to handle complex co-exposures that might interact in multiple ways, and the model performance reinforced by SHapely Additive exPlanations (SHAP) enabled our predictions interpretable and hence actionable. Here, to evaluate the mixed effect of short-term co-exposure, we conducted a time-series analysis using approximately 1.47 million hospital outpatient visits of mental disorders (i.e., depressive disorder-DD, Schizophrenia-SP, Anxiety Disorder-AD, Bipolar Disorder-BD, Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder-ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder-ASD), with matched meteorological observations from 2015 through 2019 in Nanjing, China. The global insights of gated recurrent unit model revealed that most of input features with similar effect size caused the illness risk of SP and ASD increase, and most markedly, 73% of relative humidity, 44.6 µg/m³ of NO₂, and 14.1 µg/m³ of SO₂ at 5-year average level associated with 2.27, 1.14, and 1.29 visits increase for DD, SP, and AD, respectively. Both synergic and antagonistic effect among informative paired-features were distinguished from local feature dependence. Interestingly, variation tendencies of excessive visits of bipolar disorder when atmospheric pressure, PM_2.5, and O₃ interacted with one another were inconsistent. Our results provided added qualitative and quantitative support for the conclusion that short-term co-exposure to ambient air pollutants and meteorological conditions posed threats to human mental health.

Associations between short-term exposure of PM2.5 constituents and hospital admissions of cardiovascular diseases among 18 major Chinese cities

Previous studies showed different risk effects on exposure of fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) mass for cardiovascular disease (CVD) globally, which is likely due to different constituents of PM_2.5. This study aimed to investigate the association between short-term exposure of PM_2.5 constituents and hospital admissions of CVD. Daily counts of city-specific hospital admissions for CVD in 18 cities in China between 2014 and 2017 were extracted from the national Urban Employee Basic Medical Insurance database and the Beijing Municipal Commission of Health and Family Planning Information Center database. Directly measured PM_2.5 constituents, including ions and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, were collected by the Chinese Environmental Public Health Tracking system. We used the time-stratified case-crossover design to estimate the association between PM_2.5 constituents and hospital admissions of CVD. Concentrations of ions accounted for the majority of the detected constituents. Excess risk (ER) of average ions concentrations for CVD was highest as 2.30% (95% CI: 1.62-2.99%) for NH₄⁺, whose major sources are residential and agricultural emissions. This was followed by 1.85% (1.30-2.41%) for NO₃^- (generally from vehicles), 0.95% (0.28-1.63%) for SO₄^2- (often from fossil fuel burning) respectively. The association for ions were generally consistent with ischemic heart disease (IHD) and ischemic stroke, e.g., NH₄⁺ was associated with IHD (2.50%; 1.52-3.48%) and ischemic stroke (1.77%; 0.65-2.9%). For polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), mainly from coal and vehicle-related oil combustion, the constituents were all associated with ischemic stroke but not for IHD. The ER for ischemic stroke was highest at 1.69% (0.99-2.39%) for indeno (123-cd) pyrene. Thus, in terms of the subtypes of CVD, the risks of hospital admissions varied with exposure to different PM_2.5 constituents. Exposed to NH₄⁺ had the highest risk to IHD and ischemic stroke, whereas PAHs were predominately associated with ischemic stroke only.

Particulate matter and ozone might trigger deaths from chronic ischemic heart disease

To study the association between short-term exposure to air pollutants and mortality of Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease (CIHD).

METHODS

Using a case-crossover design, we investigated 148,443 CIHD deaths from 2015 to 2020 in Jiangsu Province, China. Exposure to six ambient pollutants, including PM₁₀, PM_2.5, NO₂, CO, SO₂, and O_3, was assessed by extracting daily concentrations from validated 10 km × 10 km pollutant grids at each subject's residential address. A conditional logistic regression approach was used to explore the exposure-response relationship with adjustment for temperature and relative humidity. We calculated the Population Attributable Fractions (PAFs) and the attributable deaths number of CIHD.

RESULTS

An increase of 10 μg/m³ in PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 exposure was associated with a 1.16% (95% CI: 0.85-1.48%) and 1.80% (1.36-2.24%) increase in CIHD mortality, respectively. A threshold value of 123 µg/m³ was identified for the association between O₃ exposure and CIHD mortality. Controlling for PM_2.5, each increase of 10 µg/m³ in O₃ (>threshold) was statistically significantly associated with a 0.94% (0.19-1.71%) increase in CIHD mortality, however there was no association between NO₂, SO₂, CO exposure and CIHD mortality. Reducing PM_2.5, PM₁₀ and O₃ to the WHO air quality guidelines would prevent 6.16% (95% CI: 4.70-7.58%), 4.30% (3.18-5.43%) and 1.29% (0.48-4.20%) of CIHD deaths, respectively. During the warm season, mortality and PAFs of CIHD associated with PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and O₃ were significantly higher.

CONCLUSIONS

Short-term exposure to ambient PM_2.5, PM_10, and O₃ might trigger deaths from CIHD. These findings indicate that the premature deaths of CIHD patients can be alleviated by reducing exposure to polluted air.

Association between out-patient visits and air pollution in Chiang Mai, Thailand: Lessons from a unique situation involving a large data set showing high seasonal levels of air pollution

Chiang Mai is one of the most known cities of Northern Thailand, representative for various cities in the East and South-East Asian region exhibiting seasonal smog crises. While a few studies have attempted to address smog crises effects on human health in that geographic region, research in this regard is still in its infancy. We exploited a unique situation based on two factors: large pollutant concentration variations due to the Chiang Mai smog crises and a relatively large sample of out-patient visits. About 216,000 out-patient visits in the area of Chiang Mai during the period of 2011 to 2014 for upper (J30-J39) and lower (J44) respiratory tract diseases were evaluated with respect to associations with particulate matter (PM10), ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) concentrations using single-pollutant and multiple-pollutants Poisson regression models. All three pollutants were found to be associated with visits due to upper respiratory tract diseases (with relative risks RR = 1.023 at cumulative lag 05, 95% CI: 1.021–1.025, per 10 μg/m3 PM10 increase, RR = 1.123 at lag 05, 95% CI: 1.118–1.129, per 10 ppb O3 increase, and RR = 1.110 at lag 05, 95% CI: 1.102–1.119, per 10 ppb NO2 increase). Likewise, all three pollutants were found to be associated with visits due to lower respiratory tract diseases (with RR = 1.016 at lag 06, 95% CI: 1.015–1.017, per 10 μg/m3 PM10 increase, RR = 1.073 at lag 06, 95% CI: 1.070–1.076, per 10 ppb O3 increase, and RR = 1.046 at lag 06, 95% CI: 1.040–1.051, per 10 ppb NO2 increase). Multi-pollutants modeling analysis identified O3 as a relatively independent risk factor and PM10-NO2 pollutants models as promising two-pollutants models. Overall, these results demonstrate the adverse effects of all three air pollutants on respiratory morbidity and call for air pollution reduction and control.

Acute and lag effects of ambient fine particulate matter on the incidence of dyslipidemia in Chengdu, China: A time-series study

High levels of ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) might increase the risk of death due to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). As a critical risk factor for CVDs, dyslipidemia can cause CVDs or exacerbate pre-existing ones. This study aimed to investigate whether a short-time exposure to PM_2.5 leads to dyslipidemia (HyperTC, HyperLDL-C, HyperTG and HypoHDL-C) in adults. The serum lipid data were provided by the Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital Medical Examination Center. We included 309,654 subjects aged 18-79 between May 10, 2015, and May 10, 2017. An advanced distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was applied to investigate the acute and lag effects of ambient PM_2.5 on the risk of dyslipidemia. This study was also stratified by sex, age, BMI and season to examine potential effect modification. We observed that the associations between an interquartile increase in PM_2.5 (43 μg/m³) and dyslipidemia were [relative risk (RR); 95% confidence interval (CI)]: 1.042 (1.013, 1.071) for HyperLDL-C and 1.027 (1.006, 1.049) for HyperTC at lag0 day. The lag effects were found at lag6 day for HyperLDL-C, in lag4-6 days for HyperTC and lag4-7 days for HyperTG. Short-term exposure to ambient PM_2.5 was related to dyslipidemia and the effect modification was observed in the subgroup analysis. The female and normal-weight populations were more susceptible to the risks of PM_2.5 on HyperLDL-C and HyperTC.

Observed causative impact of fine particulate matter on acute upper respiratory disease: a comparative study in two typical cities in China

Association between fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) and respiratory health has attracted great concern in China. Substantial epidemiological evidences confirm the correlational relationship between PM_2.5 and respiratory disease in many Chinese cities. However, the causative impact of PM_2.5 on respiratory disease remains uncertain and comparative analysis is limited. This study aims to explore and compare the correlational relationship as well as the causal connection between PM_2.5 and upper respiratory tract infection (URTI) in two typical cities (Beijing, Shenzhen) with rather different ambient air environment conditions. The distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to detect the correlational relationship between PM_2.5 and URTI by revealing the lag effect pattern of PM_2.5 on URTI. The convergent cross mapping (CCM) method was applied to explore the causal connection between PM_2.5 and URTI. The results from DLNM indicate that an increase of 10 μg/m³ in PM_2.5 concentration is associated with an increase of 1.86% (95% confidence interval: 0.74%-2.99%) in URTI at a lag of 13 days in Beijing, compared with 2.68% (95% confidence interval: 0.99-4.39%) at a lag of 1 day in Shenzhen. The causality detection with CCM quantitatively demonstrates the significant causative influence of PM_2.5 on URTI in both two cities. Findings from the two methods consistently show that people living in low-concentration areas (Shenzhen) are less tolerant to PM_2.5 exposure than those in high-concentration areas (Beijing). In general, our study highlights the adverse health effects of PM_2.5 pollution on the general public in cities with various PM_2.5 levels and emphasizes the needs for the government to provide appropriate solutions to control PM_2.5 pollution, even in cities with low PM_2.5 concentration.

PM2.5 constituents and mortality from a spectrum of causes in Guangzhou, China

As the major constituents of PM_2.5, carbonaceous constituents and inorganic ions have attracted emerging attentions on their health risks, particularly on cardiorespiratory diseases. However, evidences on the risks of PM_2.5 constituents on other diseases (eg. nervous disease, genitourinary disease, neoplasms and endocrine disease) remain scarce. In our study, we firstly calculated residuals of PM_2.5 constituents regressed on PM_2.5 to remove the confounding effect of PM_2.5. Then, generalized additive model (GAM) was used to assess impacts of residuals of PM_2.5 constituents on mortality from 36 diseases (10 broad categories and 26 subcategories) during 2011-2015 in Guangzhou, China. Results of constituent-residual models showed that only EC, OC and NO₃^- were significantly associated with all-cause mortality, with per IQR change in corresponding constituent residuals related to percentage changes of 1.69% (95% CI: 0.42, 2.97), 1.94% (95% CI: 0.37, 3.54) and 2.59% (95% CI: 1.02, 4.18) at lag 03 days. All these pollutants were significantly associated with elevated mortality risk of cardiovascular disease, but only EC was significantly associated with respiratory mortality, and NO₃^- with endocrine disease and neoplasm. For more specific causes, the highest effect estimates of EC and NO₃^-were both observed on mortality from other form of heart disease, and OC on intentional self-harm, with estimates of 11.45% (95% CI: 2.74, 20.91), 12.59% (95% CI: 1.41, 25.02) and 18.01% (95% CI: 2.14, 36.36), respectively. Our findings highlighted that stricter emission control measures are still warranted to reduce air pollution level and protect the public health.

Application of instumetal neutron activation analysis method for determination of some trace elements in lichens around three sites in Algiers

Trace elements (TEs) constitute a major part of pollution, which can induce a detrimental impact on public health. A precise analysis of these elements in the environment is an important parameter in the evaluation of the population's quality of life. This work aims to quantify the concentration of some trace elments in enviromental samples using Istrumental Neutron Activation Analysis technique (INAA); also a comparative study between three sampling points (Draria, Baraki and Reghaia) were done. The Samples and standards were irradiated for 6 h at “NUR” research reactor with a thermal neutron flux of 1013 n cm−2 s−1, and analyzed by gamma ray spectrometry using HPGe detector. Seventeen elements were assessed: Ba, Br, Ce, Co, Cr, Hf, Fe, La, Nd, Rb, Sb, Sc, Se, Sm, Sr, Yb and Zn in this study. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by analyzing Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) and Standard Reference Materials (SRMs). The data obtained in this work may contribute to obtaining information about a possible rank of pollution and the different capabilities of elemental bioaccumulation by lichens.

Suicide and Associations with Air Pollution and Ambient Temperature: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Given health threats of climate change, a comprehensive review of the impacts of ambient temperature and ar pollution on suicide is needed. We performed systematic literature review and meta-analysis of suicide risks associated with short-term exposure to ambient temperature and air pollution. Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science were searched for English-language publications using relevant keywords. Observational studies assessing risks of daily suicide and suicide attempts associated with temperature, particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm (PM₁₀) and ≤2.5 mm (PM_2.5), ozone (O₃), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and carbon monoxide (CO) were included. Data extraction was independently performed in duplicate. Random-effect meta-analysis was applied to pool risk ratios (RRs) for increases in daily suicide per interquartile range (IQR) increase in exposure. Meta-regression analysis was applied to examine effect modification by income level based on gross national income (GNI) per capita, national suicide rates, and average level of exposure factors. In total 2274 articles were screened, with 18 studies meeting inclusion criteria for air pollution and 32 studies for temperature. RRs of suicide per 7.1 °C temperature was 1.09 (95% CI: 1.06, 1.13). RRs of suicide per IQR increase in PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and NO₂ were 1.02 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.05), 1.01 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.03), and 1.03 (95% CI: 1.00, 1.07). O₃, SO₂, and CO were not associated with suicide. RR of suicide was significantly higher in higher-income than lower-income countries (1.09, 95% CI: 1.07, 1.11 and 1.20, 95% CI: 1.14, 1.26 per 7.1 °C increased temperature, respectively). Suicide risks associated with air pollution did not significantly differ by income level, national suicide rates, or average exposure levels. Research gaps were found for interactions between air pollution and temperature on suicide risks.

Impact of birth season on the years of life lost from respiratory diseases in the elderly related to ambient PM2.5 exposure in Ningbo, China

Background

Ambient fine particle (PM_2.5) pollution is an important public health problem in China. Short-term ambient PM_2.5 exposure is associated with increased mortality of respiratory diseases. However, few evidence was available on the effect of exposure to ambient PM_2.5 on the years of life lost (YLL) from respiratory diseases in the elderly. Furthermore, birth season which is frequently applied as a proxy for environmental exposure in early life may influence the health outcome in the later life. Nevertheless, the modification effect of birth season on the relationship of PM_2.5 exposure and respiratory health need to be explored.

Methods

A time-stratified case-crossover design was used to analyze YLL from respiratory diseases in the elderly related to ambient PM_2.5 exposure between 2013 and 2016 in Ningbo, China. The modification effect of birth season was explored by subgroup comparisons between different birth seasons.

Results

Each 10 μg/m³ increase in daily ambient PM_2.5 was associated with an increment of 1.61 (95% CI 0.12, 3.10) years in YLL from respiratory diseases in the elderly population. Individuals who were born in winter had significantly higher YLL from respiratory diseases associated with ambient PM_2.5 exposure than those who were born in other seasons.

Conclusions

Birth season which reflects the early-life PM_2.5 exposure level that may influence the lung development has a potential effect on the disease burden of respiratory diseases related to ambient PM_2.5 exposure in later life. The results would provide theoretical basis to protect vulnerable population defined by birth season when exploring the adverse effects of ambient PM_2.5 in the respiratory health.

Study on Environmental and Lifestyle Factors for the North-South Differential of Cardiovascular Disease in China

Human death and life span are closely related to the geographical environment and regional lifestyle. These factors considerably vary among counties and regions, leading to the geographical disparity of disease. Quantitative studies on this phenomenon are insufficient. Cerebrovascular and heart diseases are the leading causes of death. The mortality rate of cerebrovascular and heart diseases is statistically higher in northern China than in southern China; the p-value of t-test for cerebrovascular and heart diseases was 0.047 and 0.000, respectively. The population attribution fraction of 12 major risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in each province was calculated based on their exposure and relative risk. The results found that residents in northern China consume high sodium-containing food, fewer vegetables, and less sea food products, and tend to be overweight. Fine particulate matter is higher in northern China than in southern China. Cold temperatures also cause a greater number of deaths than hot temperatures. All these factors have resulted in a higher CVD mortality rate in northern China. The attributive differential for sodium, vegetable, fruit, smoking, PM_2.5, omega-3, obesity, low temperature, and high temperature of heart disease between the two parts of China is 9.1, 0.7, -2.5, 0.1, 1.4, 1.3, 2.0, 4.7, and -2.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the attributive differential for the above factors of cerebrovascular disease between the two parts of China is 8.7, 0.0, -5.2, 0.1, 1.0, 0.0, 2.4, 4.7, and -2.1%. Diet high in sodium is the leading cause of the north-south differential in CVD, resulting in 0.71 less years of life expectancy in northern compared with that in southern China.

Spatiotemporal assessment of health burden and economic losses attributable to short-term exposure to ground-level ozone during 2015-2018 in China

BACKGROUND

Ground-level ozone (O3) pollution is currently the one of the severe environmental problems in China. Although existing studies have quantified the O3-related health impact and economic loss, few have focused on the acute health effects of short-term exposure to O3 and have been limited to a single temporal and spatial dimension.

METHODS

Based on the O3 concentration obtained from ground monitoring networks in 334 Chinese cities in 2015-2018, this study used a two-stage exposure parameter weighted Log-linear exposure-response function to estimate the cause-specific mortality for short-term exposure to O3.

RESULTS

The value of statistical life (VSL) method that were used to calculate the economic loss at the city-level. Our results show that in China, the national all-cause mortality attributed to O3 was 0.27(95% CI: 0.14-0.55) to 0.39 (95% CI: 0.20-0.67) million across 2015-2018. The estimated economic loss caused by O3 was 387.76 (95% CI: 195.99-904.50) to 594.08 (95% CI: 303.34-1140.65) billion CNY, accounting for 0.52 to 0.69% of total reported GDP. Overall, the O3 attributed health and economic burden has begun to decline in China since 2017. However, highly polluted areas still face severe burden, and undeveloped areas suffer from high GDP losses.

CONCLUSIONS

There are substantial health impacts and economic losses related to short-term O3 exposure in China. The government should pay attention to the emerging ozone pollution, and continue to strengthen the intervention in traditional priority areas while solving the pollution problem in non-priority areas.

Travelling to polluted cities: a systematic review on the harm of air pollution on international travellers' health

RATIONALE FOR REVIEW

In 2019, approximately, 1.4 billion people travelled internationally. Many individuals travel to megacities where air pollution concentrations can vary significantly. Short-term exposure to air pollutants can cause morbidity and mortality related to cardiovascular and respiratory disease, with the literature clearly reporting a strong association between short-term exposure to particulate matter ≤2.5 μm and ozone with adverse health outcomes in resident populations. However, limited research has been conducted on the health impacts of short-term exposure to air pollution in individuals who travel internationally. The objective of this systematic review was to review the evidence for the respiratory and cardiovascular health impacts from exposure to air pollution during international travel to polluted cities in adults aged ≥18 years old.

KEY FINDINGS

We searched PubMed, Scopus and EMBASE for studies related to air pollution and the health impacts on international travellers. Of the initially identified 115 articles that fit the search criteria, 6 articles were selected for the final review. All six studies found indications of adverse health impacts of air pollution exposure on international travellers, with most of the changes being reversible upon return to their home country/city. However, none of these studies contained large populations nor investigated vulnerable populations, such as children, elderly or those with pre-existing conditions.

CONCLUSIONS

More research is warranted to clearly understand the impacts of air pollution related changes on travellers' health, especially on vulnerable groups who may be at higher risk of adverse impacts during travel to polluted cities.

Association between particulate matter air pollution and risk of depression and suicide: a systematic review and meta-analysis

An increasing number of studies examined the potential effects of ambient particulate matter (PM: PM2.5 and PM10-PMs with diameters not greater than 2.5 and 10 μm, respectively) pollution on the risk of depression and suicide; however, the results have been inconclusive. This study aimed to determine the overall relationship between PM exposure and depression/suicide based on current evidence. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of current available studies. Thirty articles (20 for depression and 10 for suicide) with data from 1,447,313 participants were included in the meta-analysis. For a 10 μg/m3 increase in short-term exposure to PM2.5, we found a 2% (p < 0.001) increased the risk of depression and a 2% (p = 0.001) increased risk of suicide. A 10 μg/m3 increase in long-term exposure to PM2.5 was associated with a more apparent increase of 18% (p = 0.005) in depression risk. In addition, a 10 μg/m3 increase in short-term exposure to PM10 was associated with a 2% (p = 0.003) increase in depression risk and a 1% (p = 0.002) increase in suicide risk. Subgroup analyses showed that associations between PM and depression were more apparent in people over 65 years and from developed regions. Besides, the study design and study quality might also have an impact on their associations. The meta-analysis found that an increase in ambient PM concentration was strongly associated with an increased risk of depression and suicide, and the associations for depression appeared stronger for smaller particles (PM2.5) and at a long-term time pattern.

Association between ambient ozone pollution and mortality from a spectrum of causes in Guangzhou, China

Ambient ozone (O₃) has emerged as an important public health issue worldwide. Previous studies found an association between O₃ and cardiorespiratory mortality. However, evidence was limited regarding the risk of O₃ on mortality from other diseases. In this study, we aimed to estimate the association between O₃ and mortality from a broad spectrum of diseases in Guangzhou, China, which has experienced a rapid increase in O₃ concentration over the past decades. Daily data were obtained on cause-specific mortality, air pollutant concentrations and weather conditions during 2013-2018. A generalized additive model with quasi-Poisson regression was applied to examine the association between O₃ and mortality from 10 broad causes and 26 refined subcategories, with adjustment of long-term and seasonal trends, weather conditions, public holidays and days of the week. We found that the threshold concentrations of O₃ were 40 μg/m³ for all-cause, non-accidental, cardiovascular and respiratory mortality. Mortality risk increased monotonically with O₃ concentrations above the threshold. Per 10 μg/m³ increase of O₃ at lag 0-3 days was associated with 0.54% (95%CI: 0.34-0.74%), 0.56% (95%CI: 0.36-0.76%), 0.59% (95%CI: 0.30-0.88%), 0.78% (95%CI: 0.33-1.24%) and 0.52% (95%CI: 0.21-0.83%) elevated risk of death from all causes, non-accidental causes, cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases and neoplasms, respectively. Among the subcategories, the largest effect estimate was observed in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The elderly suffered from a higher mortality risk from O₃. Stringent emission control strategies and multi-sectoral collaborations are needed to reduce the detrimental impact of O₃ on vulnerable populations.

Association of suicide with short-term exposure to air pollution at different lag times: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Suicide is a major public health problem, with some environmental risk factors.

OBJECTIVES

This meta-analysis study explored the association between short-term exposure to air pollution and suicide mortality, with an emphasis on different lag times.

METHODS

A systematic search was used to find relevant studies in databases including Scopus, Web of Knowledge, Pubmed, and Embase published up to 19 May 2020. The inclusion criteria included case-crossover or time-series studies assessing the association of criteria air pollutants with suicide mortality at different Lag Days of 0-7 (LD0 to LD7) and Cumulative Lags of 1-7 days (CL1 to CL7). Odds ratios (OR) were calculated with 95% confidence intervals (CI).

RESULTS

Of 1436 retrieved articles, 11 were eligible for data extraction, representing data on 283,550 suicides published between 2010 and 2019. The odds of suicide death increase with each 10 μg/m³ increase in the mean concentrations of NO₂ at CL1 (1.013: 1.006-1.021), CL2 (1.028: 1.003-1.053), CL3 (1.035: 1.001-1.070), and LD2 (1.011: 1.001-1.022), SO₂ at CL1 (1.024: 1.014-1.034), CL2 (1.030: 1.012-1.048), CL3 (1.029: 1.009-1.049), and CL4 (1.027: 1.005-1.049), O₃ at CL6 (1.008: 1.000-1.016), PM₁₀ at CL1 (1.004: 1.000-1.008), and PM_2.5 at CL1 (1.017: 1.003-1.031). Besides, the odds of suicide death increases with each 0.5 mg/m³ increase in the mean concentration of CO at LD6 (1.005: 1.000-1.011). However, it decreased with increased O₃ exposure at LD3 (0.997: 0.994-1.000).

CONCLUSION

The study supports a positive association between air pollution and suicide mortality. No immediate risk was elucidated but the possible effects seem to be exerted cumulatively.

The short-term effect of PM2.5/O3 on daily mortality from 2013 to 2018 in Hefei, China

This research intends to explore the short-term impacts of PM_2.5/O₃ on daily death in Hefei from 2013 to 2018. Data on daily death of Hefei residents, meteorological factors, and air pollutants were collected from Jan 1, 2013, to Dec 31, 2018. The correlation between PM_2.5/O₃ and daily death in Hefei during the research period was studied by time series analysis. From 2013 to 2018, there were 61,683 non-accidental deaths, including 27,431 cardiovascular deaths, 5587 respiratory deaths, 20,921 malignant tumor deaths, and 1674 diabetes deaths, in Hefei. Annual mean concentrations of PM_2.5, PM₁₀, NO₂, SO₂, CO, and O₃ in Hefei were 66.18, 92.37, 39.75, 15.39, 930, and 79.08 μg m^-3, respectively. An increase of 10 μg m^-3 in PM_2.5 was related with 0.53% (95% CI 0.31-0.75%), 0.93% (95% CI 0.60-1.26%), 0.90% and (95% CI 0.23-1.57%) increase in non-accidental, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases mortality, respectively. The association between ozone and mortality was not significant. In cold seasons, PM_2.5 had a stronger effect on the deaths resulting from non-accidental, cardiovascular, and respiratory diseases. The effect of O₃ on deaths was not significantly different between the cold season and the warm season. Women and the elders (over 65 years) were at high risk of being affected by PM_2.5/O₃. Short-term exposure to PM_2.5 was positively correlated with increased deaths due to non-accidental, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases in Hefei. Females and elders were more vulnerable to PM_2.5/O₃ exposure. No significant associations were observed between ozone and deaths from non-accidental, cardiovascular, respiratory, malignant tumors, and diabetes diseases.

Urban particulate matter disturbs the equilibrium of mitochondrial dynamics and biogenesis in human vascular endothelial cells

Since ambient particulate matter (APM) is closely related to cardiovascular damage with mitochondria being its potential targets, this study was designed to explore the impact of APM on mitochondrial homeostasis, especially on mitochondrial dynamics and biogenesis in human vascular endothelial cells, using a kind of standard material, PM SRM1648a. As a result, internalized particles lead to mitochondrial dysfunction in EA.hy926 human endothelial cells, including mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) overproduction, mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) reduction and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) inhibition, coupled with additional release of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) into the cytosol. Moreover, morphological and structural changes in mitochondria are observed in response to PM SRM1648a. In that aspect, according to the evidence of shorter fragmented mitochondria dispersed throughout the cytoplasm, along with aberrant upregulation of fission-related mRNAs/proteins, the mitochondria exhibit a fission phenotype shifting from intact reticular network to fragmentized punctate shapes. Mechanistically, PM SRM1648a facilitates phosphorylation of DRP1 at Ser616 in HUVECs, and triggers its dephosphorylation at Ser637 residue in both EA.hy926 and HUVECs, which are supportive events for mitochondrial fission during particle exposure. Additionally, suppression of a master energy modulator, PGC-1α, reveals that PM SRM1648a has the ability to impair mitochondrial biogenesis. Collectively, it could be well concluded that PM SRM1648a interferes with the equilibrium of mitochondrial dynamics and biogenesis, which is likely to play a pivotal role in mitochondrial dysfunction driven by particles, eventually contributing to endothelial cell damage. Of note, it is more reasonable to conduct risk assessment from both cellular level and subcellular structures, among which mitochondria-targeted toxicity supplements more comprehensive understanding of APM inducible vascular toxicity.

Long-term effects of ambient air pollutants on suicidal ideation in China: The Henan Rural Cohort Study

BACKGROUND

The association between ambient air pollutants exposure and suicidal ideation (SI) has rarely been explored, especially in Chinese population. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the long-term effects of ambient air pollutants on SI among a Chinese rural population.

METHOD

We recruited 29997 participants from the Henan Rural Cohort study in 2016-2017. SI was evaluated by using the ninth item of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) in the baseline survey. We adopted a satellite-based spatiotemporal model to estimate participants' exposure to particulate matters (PMs) (PM with an aerodynamic diameter ≤1 μm (PM₁), ≤2.5 μm (PM_2.5) or ≤10 μm (PM₁₀), respectively) and nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and then calculated the 3-year average concentrations of the four pollutants. We used logistic regression models to explore the association between long-term exposure to ambient air pollutants and SI. In addition, we conducted several stratified analyses to examine effect modification of selected factors.

RESULTS

The odds ratios (95% confidence intervals [CI]) of SI in response to each 1 μg/m³ increase in PM₁, PM_2.5, PM₁₀ and NO₂ concentrations were 1.08 (1.01, 1.15), 1.10 (1.02, 1.19), 1.05 (1.01, 1.09) and 1.12 (1.04, 1.21), respectively. Individuals exposed to PM₁, PM_2.5, PM₁₀ or NO₂ concentrations in the fourth quartile had a 1.36-fold (95%CI: 1.08, 1.72), 1.69-fold (95%CI: 1.05, 2.72), 1.49-fold (95%CI: 1.09, 2.05) or 1.71-fold (95%CI: 1.15, 2.85) risks of SI, compared to the ones with corresponding air pollutants in the first quartile. Besides, the risks of SI increased with the quartiles of air pollutants (PM₁: P_trend = 0.002, PM_2.5: P_trend = 0.003, PM₁₀: P_trend = 0.010, NO₂: P_trend = 0.010). Stratified analyses suggested that males, highly educated participants, ever-drinkers and people aged range 36-64 years were more vulnerable to the adverse effects of air pollutants.

CONCLUSIONS

This study provided evidence for the long-term effects of ambient PMs and NO₂ on SI in rural Chinese adults, particularly for males, highly educated participants, ever-drinkers and people aged range 36-64 years.

Associations of ambient air pollutants with airway and allergic symptoms in 13,335 preschoolers in Shanghai, China

Findings are inconsistent in studies for impacts of outdoor air pollutants on airway health in childhood. In this paper, we collected data regarding airway and allergic symptoms in the past year before a survey in 13,335 preschoolers from a cross-sectional study. Daily averaged concentrations of ambient sulphur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm (PM₁₀) in the past year before the survey were collected in the kindergarten-located district. We investigated associations of 12-month average concentrations of these pollutants with childhood airway and allergic symptoms. In the two-level (district-child) logistic regression analyses, exposure to higher level of NO₂ and of PM₁₀ increased odds of wheeze symptoms (adjusted OR, 95%CI: 1.03, 1.01-1.05 for per 3.0 μg/m³ increase in NO₂; 1.22, 1.09-1.39 for per 7.6 μg/m³ increase in PM₁₀), wheeze with a cold (1.03, 1.01-1.06; 1.22, 1.08-1.39), dry cough during night (1.05, 1.03-1.08; 1.23, 1.09-1.40), rhinitis symptoms (1.11, 1.08-1.13; 1.32, 1.07-1.63), rhinitis on pet (1.11, 1.05-1.18; 1.37, 0.95-1.98) and pollen (1.12, 1.03-1.21; 1.23, 0.84-1.82) exposure, eczema symptoms (1.09, 1.05-1.12; 1.22, 0.98-1.52), and lack of sleep due to eczema (1.12, 1.07-1.18; 1.58, 1.25-1.98). Exposures to NO₂ and PM₁₀ were also significantly and positively associated with the accumulative score of airway symptoms. Similar positive associations were found of NO₂ and of PM₁₀ with the individual symptoms and symptom scores among preschoolers from different kindergarten-located district. These results indicate that ambient NO₂ and PM₁₀ likely are risk factors for airway and allergic symptoms in childhood in Shanghai, China.

Modifiers of the effect of short-term variation in PM2.5 on mortality in Beijing, China

INTRODUCTION

Epidemiologic studies have reported associations between short-term exposure to particulate matter <2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM_2.5) and mortality, but the role of modifiers remains unclear with studies reporting inconsistent results. We evaluated the impact of individual (age, gender and education) and township (geographic area, socioeconomic status, background air pollution and road density) level factors on the relationship between short-term variation in PM_2.5 with cause-specific mortality in Beijing (population: 21.7 million in 2016), China.

METHODS

Daily PM_2.5 concentrations in each township (n = 327; township population: 2000-359,400; township area: 1-392 km²) within Beijing were estimated by kriging with external drift using measurements from 35 air quality monitoring stations and geographic variables. Time-stratified case-crossover analysis with township-level mortality data from Oct. 1st, 2012 to Dec. 31st, 2013 was then used to examine associations between PM_2.5 exposure estimates and cause-specific mortality, stratified by the potential effect modifiers.

RESULTS

A 10-μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5 concentration was associated with a 0.17% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.05%-0.29%] and 0.27% (95%CI:0.01%-0.52%) increase in non-accidental and stroke mortality with no lag, a 0.81% (95%CI:0.39%-1.23%) and 0.96% (95%CI:0.35%-1.57%) increase in respiratory disease (RD) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) mortality at a lag of two-day moving average. For individual-level effect modifiers, the elderly showed higher effects for all the specific causes of mortality; those with lower education level showed higher effects for non-accidental, cardiovascular disease and stroke mortality; females showed higher effects for non-accidental and cause-specific cardiovascular diseases. For township-level effect modifiers, effect estimates tended to be larger for suburban areas, areas of lower road density, lower PM_2.5 and lower socioeconomic status.

CONCLUSIONS

Short-term exposure to township-level ambient PM_2.5 was associated with increased mortality in Beijing, with indications of effect modification by both individual and township-level factors.

Health benefits on cardiocerebrovascular disease of reducing exposure to ambient fine particulate matter in Tianjin, China

With the development of the industrialization level in China, high concentrations of fine particulate matter (≤ 2.5 μg/m³ in aerodynamic diameter (PM_2.5)) could have a great impact on the health of the population. Our study is to quantify the health benefits on cardiocerebrovascular disease of reducing exposure to PM_2.5 in Tianjin, China. We obtained the data on cardiovascular disease (CVD), ischemic heart disease (IHD), and cerebrovascular disease (CD) mortalities to quantify the association between CVD, CD, and IHD mortalities and PM_2.5 and calculate health and economic benefits when the annual average concentration of PM_2.5 was reduced to National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) and World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines by using our concentration response (C-R) functions. There were 435.22 (95% CI 253.86 to 616.57) all-cause, 130.22 (95% CI 66.34 to194.09) IHD, and 204.07 (95% CI 111.66 to 296.47) CD deaths attributed to PM_2.5 and the economic benefits obtained by preventing all-cause, IHD, and CD mortalities were equivalent to be 2.79%, 0.83%, and 1.31% of Baodi's GDP in Tianjin in 2017, respectively. PM_2.5 concentration was positive with all-cause, IHD, and CD mortalities in rural, suburban, and urban area of Tianjin, China. Meanwhile, the number of avoidable deaths and economic cost of reducing PM_2.5 concentrations to NAAQS and WHO guidelines was highest in the rural area.

Associations between ambient air pollution and daily incidence of pediatric hand, foot and mouth disease in Ningbo, 2014-2016: a distributed lag nonlinear model

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) has high prevalence around the world, with serious consequences for children. Due to the long survival period of HFMD virus in ambient air, air pollutants may play a critical role in HFMD epidemics. We collected data on daily cases of HFMD among children aged 0–14 years in Ningbo City between 2014 and 2016. Distributed lag nonlinear models were used to assess the effects of particulate matter (PM_2.5), sulphur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and ozone (O₃) on the daily incidence of HFMD among children, with analyses stratified by gender and age. Compared with moderate levels of air pollution, high SO₂ levels had a relative risk (RR) of 2.32 (95% CI 1.42–3.79) and high NO₂ levels had a RR of 2.01 (95% CI 1.22–3.31). The RR of O₃ was 2.12 (95% CI 1.47–3.05) and that of PM_2.5 was 0.77 (95% CI 0.64–0.92) at moderate levels of air pollution. Specifically, high levels of SO₂ and NO₂ had RRs of 2.39 (95% CI 1.44–3.96) and 2.02 (95% CI 1.21–3.39), respectively, among 0–4-year-old children, while high O₃ had an RR of 2.31 (95% CI 1.09–4.89) among 5–14-year-old children. Our findings suggest significant associations of high SO₂ and NO₂ levels and moderate O₃ levels in HFMD epidemics, and also indicate that air pollution causes lagged effects on HFMD epidemics. Our study provides practical and useful data for targeted prevention and control of HMFD based on environmental evidence.

Association of Indoor and Outdoor Air Pollution With Hand-Grip Strength Among Adults in Six Low- and Middle-Income Countries

BACKGROUND

Air pollution has been associated with various health outcomes. Its effect on hand-grip strength, a measurement of the construct of muscle strength and health status, remains largely unknown.

METHODS

We used the survey data from 31,209 adults ≥ 50 years of age within Wave 1 of the Study on Global AGEing and Adult Health in six low- and middle-income countries. The outdoor concentration of fine particulate matter pollution (PM2.5) was estimated using satellite data. Domestic fuel type and ventilation were used as indicators of indoor air pollution. We used multilevel linear regression models to examine the association between indoor and outdoor air pollution and hand-grip strength, as well as the potential effect modifiers.

RESULTS

We found inverse associations between both indoor and outdoor air pollution and hand-grip strength. Each 10 μg/m3 increase in 3 years' averaged concentrations of outdoor PM2.5 corresponded to 0.70 kg (95% CI: -1.26, -0.14) lower hand-grip strength; and compared with electricity/liquid/gas fuel users, those using solid fuels had lower hand-grip strength (β = -1.25, 95% CI: -1.74, -0.75). However, we did not observe a statistically significant association between ventilation and hand-grip strength. We further observed that urban residents and those having a higher education level had a higher association between ambient PM2.5 and hand-grip strength, and men, young participants, smokers, rural participants, and those with lower household income had higher associations between indoor air pollution and hand-grip strength.

CONCLUSION

This study suggests that both indoor and outdoor air pollution might be important risk factors of poorer health and functional status as indicated by hand-grip strength.

Long-term exposure to ambient fine particulate pollution, sleep disturbance and their interaction effects on suicide attempts among Chinese adolescents

BACKGROUND

There is a lack of literature about the joint effects of PM_2.5 exposure and sleep disturbance on suicide attempts. This study aimed to estimate the association of PM_2.5 exposure or sleep disturbance with suicide attempts among Chinese adolescents and to test their interaction effects on both additive and multiplicative scales.

METHODS

Data was drawn from a subsample of the School-based Chinese Adolescents Health Survey (SCAHS) during 2014-2015 in Guangdong province, including 21,780 eligible participants. The 3-year (2011-2013) annual average concentration of PM_2.5 was estimated using satellite data. Multi-level logistic regression models with weights were fitted, and both multiplicative and additive interactions for PM_2.5 and sleep disturbance were tested.

RESULTS

A total of 608 students (2.8%) reported having suicide attempts. After adjusting for significant demographics and depressive symptoms, PM_2.5 exposure (Adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.25, 95% CI = 1.03-1.56) and sleep disturbance (AOR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.41-2.02) were positively associated with suicide attempts, respectively. The adjusted additive interaction effect of PM_2.5 and sleep disturbance was 2.42 (95% CI = 1.80-3.26) with a synergistic index of 1.31. The multivariable multi-level logistic regression models did not find any significant multiplicative interaction item (P > 0.05).

LIMITATION

The school-based cross-sectional study design CONCLUSION: Long-term exposure to PM_2.5 may elevate the risks of suicide attempts among Chinese adolescents. Moreover, the significant interaction effects of PM_2.5 exposure and sleep disturbance on suicide attempts were found in the additive model, suggesting decreasing long-term exposure to a higher level of PM_2.5 may be helpful to reduce the risk of suicide attempts among adolescents with sleep disturbance.

Association between particulate matter air pollution and risk of depression and suicide: systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Some recent studies examined the effect of ambient particulate matter (PM) pollution on depression and suicide. However, the results have been inconclusive.AimsTo determine the overall relationship between PM exposure and depression/suicide in the general population.

METHOD

We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of case-crossover and cohort studies to assess the association between PM2.5 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less) or PM10 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter between 2.5 and 10 µm) exposure and depression/suicide.

RESULTS

A total of 14 articles (7 for depression and 7 for suicide) with data from 684 859 participants were included in the meta-analysis. With a 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 we found a 19% (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.19 [1.07, 1.33]) increased risk of depression and a marginally increased risk of suicide (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.05 [0.99, 1.11]) in the general population. We did not observe any significant associations between increasing exposure to PM10 and depression/suicide. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were used to determine the robustness of results. The strongest estimated effect of depression associated with PM2.5 appeared in a long-term lag pattern (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.25 [1.07, 1.45], P &lt; 0.01) and cumulative lag pattern (odds ratio [95% CI] 1.26 [1.07, 1.48], P &lt; 0.01).

CONCLUSIONS

The meta-analysis suggested that an increase in ambient PM2.5 concentration was strongly associated with increased depression risk in the general population, and the association appeared stronger at long-term lag and cumulative lag patterns, suggesting a potential cumulative exposure effect over time.Declaration of interestNone.

Population susceptibility differences and effects of air pollution on cardiovascular mortality: epidemiological evidence from a time-series study

There is insufficient evidence on the relationship between air pollution and mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD) in northeast China. Here, we explored the short-term effects of air pollution on CVD mortality and preliminarily investigated differences in population susceptibility to air pollution in Shenyang, China. CVD mortality, air pollution, and meteorological data during 2013-2016 were obtained. Time-series analysis was applied to evaluate the association between air pollution and daily CVD mortality with different lag structures. In the single-pollutant model, each 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5, PM₁₀, SO₂, NO₂, and O₃ concentrations and 1 mg/m³ increase in CO concentrations at lag0 (same day) was significantly associated with an increase of 0.40% (95% confidence interval, 0.22-0.59%), 0.26% (0.12-0.40%), 0.43% (0.16-0.70%), 0.90% (0.14-1.67%), 0.76% (0.21-1.32%), and 3.33% (0.97-5.75%), respectively, in overall CVD mortality. Susceptibility to air pollutants was higher among females, elderly people, and ischemic heart disease patients. Furthermore, air pollution effects on CVD mortality were 2-8 times greater during the non-heating period. In conclusion, the air pollutants PM_2.5, PM₁₀, SO₂, NO₂, O₃, and CO showed significant positive effects on CVD mortality in Shenyang, China. These findings highlight the adverse effects of air pollution and suggest the need for personal protective equipment and reduction of air pollution sources.

Applying the concept of "number needed to treat" to the formulation of daily ambient air quality standards

The World Health Organization sets up the Ambient Air Quality Guidelines mainly based on short-term and long-term health effects of air pollution. Previous studies, however, have generally revealed a non-threshold concentration-response relationship between air pollution and health, making it difficult to determine a concentration, below which no obvious health effects can be observed. Here we proposed a novel approach based on the concept of "number needed to treat", specifically, we calculated the reduction in air pollution concentrations needed to avoid one death corresponding to different hypothetical concentration standards; the one with the smallest value would be the most practical concentration standard. As an example, we applied this approach to the daily standard of ambient PM_2.5 (particulate matter with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm) in four Chinese cities. The calculation was based on the association between daily mortality and ambient PM_2.5, which was examined by a generalized additive model with adjustment of important covariates. Significant associations were observed between PM_2.5 and mortality. Our analyses suggested that it is appropriate to have 50 μg/m³ as the daily standard of ambient PM_2.5 for the study area, compared to the current standard of which were directly adopted from the national standard of 75 μg/m³. This novel approach should be considered when planning and/or revising the ambient air quality guidelines/standards.

Risks of hospital admissions from a spectrum of causes associated with particulate matter pollution

Ambient particulate matter (PM) pollution has been linked to elevated hospital admissions (HAs), especially from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. However, few studies have estimated the associations between PM pollution and HAs for a wider range of broad disease categories. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of PM with aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM_2.5) and ≤10 μm (PM₁₀) on a range of broad and specific causes of HAs in Chengdu, China during 2015-2016, using a generalized additive model (GAM). Age-, gender- and season-specific analyses were also performed on the broad categories. We further calculated the corresponding morbidity burden due to PM exposure. During the study period, the daily mean level for PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ was 57.3 μg/m³ and 94.7 μg/m³, respectively. For broad disease categories, each 10 μg/m³ increase in PM₁₀ at lag06 was associated with increments of 0.65% (95% CI: 0.32%-0.99%) in HAs from respiratory, 0.49% (95% CI: 0.04%-0.95%) from circulatory and 0.91% (95% CI: 0.15%-1.69%) from skin and subcutaneous tissue diseases. By contrast, only respiratory HAs showed a significant positive association with elevated PM_2.5 at lag06 (1.03% increase per 10 μg/m³, 95% CI: 0.50%-1.56%, p < 0.001). Increased HAs risks for several more refined specific causes within respiratory, circulatory, skin and subcutaneous tissue, nervous and genitourinary diseases were also observed. Subgroup analyses indicated that effect estimates were modified by age, gender and season. Overall, the largest morbidity burden was observed in myocardial infarction, about 11.27% (95% CI: 3.45%-18.07%) and 11.11% (95% CI: 4.07%-17.27%) of HAs for myocardial infarction could be attributable to PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ levels exceeding the WHO's air quality guidelines (24-h mean: 25 μg/m³ for PM_2.5 and 50 μg/m³ for PM₁₀). Our study suggests that both PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ increase risks of morbidity from broad range of causes of HAs in Chengdu, and result in substantial morbidity burden.

Association between short-term exposure to particulate matter air pollution and cause-specific mortality in Changzhou, China

BACKGROUND

Extensive studies have linked ambient particulate matter (PM) to an increased mortality burden from a wide range of causes. However, the effects of PM on mortality rates from specific causes were unclear. This study aimed to estimate the detrimental effects of PM on cause specific deaths in Changzhou, China.

METHOD

Data representing daily mortality rates, weather conditions and particulate air pollution levels were obtained from government-controlled agencies of Changzhou, from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2016. An inverse distance weighting method was used to assess the population exposure to PM and a time-series was performed to detect the detrimental effects of PM.

RESULTS

Positive associations were identified between PMs and daily mortality rates from non-accidental, circulatory, hypertensive, respiratory and chronic lower respiratory causes at a lag of 0-3 days. The effects of PMs were strongest on hypertensive mortality, with an increase of 5.27% (95% confidence interval (CI): 2.43-8.19%) and 3.52% (95% CI: 1.55-5.53%), per 10 μg/m³ increment in PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ respectively. The elderly exhibited a higher mortality risk with PMs exposure. Females were more vulnerable to circulatory, hypertensive and respiratory death while males were more sensitive to chronic lower respiratory and neurodegenerative mortality. The effects were stronger in warm seasons for circulatory mortality and stronger in cold seasons for respiratory mortality.

CONCLUSION

These findings indicate that PM could exert adverse influences on the outcomes of several pathological processes, especially for women and the elderly with hypertension disease.

Short-term effects of fine particulate matter on non-accidental and circulatory diseases mortality: A time series study among the elder in Changchun

Background and objectives

Fine particulate matter (PM_2.5, particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 μm) has multiple adverse effects on human health, especially on the respiratory and circulatory system. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the short-term effect of PM_2.5 on the mortality risk of non-accidental and circulatory diseases, and to explore the potential effect modification by sex, education and death location.

Methods

We collected daily mortality counts of Changchun (China) residents, daily meteorology and air pollution data, from January 1, 2014, to January 1, 2017. We focused on the elderly (≥65 years old) population who died from non-accidental causes and circulatory diseases, and stratified them by sex, education, and death location. A generalized additive Poisson regression model (GAM) was used to analyse the impact of air pollutants on mortality. We fit single pollutant models to examine PM_2.5 effects with different lag structures of single-day (distributed lag:lag0-lag3) and multi-day (moving average lag: lag01-lag03). To test the sensitivity of the model, a multi-pollutant model was established when the PM_2.5 effect was strongest.

Results

In the single pollutant models, an increment of PM_2.5 by 10 μg/m³ at lag0-3 was associated with a 0.385% (95% CI: 0.069% to 0.702%) increase in daily non-accidental mortality and a 0.442% (95% CI: 0.038% to 0.848%) increase in daily circulatory disease mortality. NO₂ (lag1) and O₃ (lag0, lag1, lag2, lag01,lag02, lag03) were associated with daily non-accidental death and NO₂ (lag1, lag3, lag03) and O₃ (lag0, lag1, lag01,lag02, lag03) were associated with daily circulatory disease mortality. In the co-pollutant models, the risk estimates for PM_2.5 changed slightly. The excess mortality risk of non-accidental and circulatory diseases was higher for women, people with low education, and died outside hospital.

Conclusions

We found that short-term exposure to PM_2.5 increased the mortality risk of non-accidental and circulatory diseases among the elderly in Changchun. Women, people with low education and died outside hospital are more susceptible to PM_2.5. NO₂ and O₃ were also associated with an increase in mortality from non-accidental and circulatory diseases and the O₃ is a high effect.

Effects of ambient carbon monoxide on daily hospitalizations for cardiovascular disease: a time-stratified case-crossover study of 460,938 cases in Beijing, China from 2013 to 2017

BACKGROUND

Evidence focused on exposure to ambient carbon monoxide (CO) and the risk of hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is lacking in developing countries. This study aimed to examine the effect of CO exposure on hospitalizations for CVD in Beijing, China.

METHODS

A total of 460,938 hospitalizations for cardiovascular diseases were obtained from electronic hospitalization summary reports from 2013 to 2017. A time-stratified case-crossover design was conducted to investigate the association between CO exposure and hospitalizations for total and cause-specific CVD, including coronary heart disease (CHD), atrial fibrillation (AF), and heart failure (HF). Stratified analysis was also conducted by age group (18-64 years and ≥ 65 years) and sex.

RESULTS

Linear exposure-response curves for the association between ambient CO exposure and hospitalizations for CVD was observed. Ambient CO was positively associated with hospitalizations for total CVD and CHD. However, the observed increased risk was not statistically significant for hospitalizations for AF and HF. The strongest effect of CO concentration was observed on the current- and previous-day of exposure (lag _0-1 day). For a 1 mg/m³ increase in a 2-day moving average CO concentration, an increase of 2.8% [95% confidence interval (CI): 2.2 to 3.3%] and 3.0% (95% CI: 2.4 to 3.6%) in daily hospital admissions for CVD and CHD were estimated, respectively. This association was robust after adjusting for other copollutants and did not vary by age group and sex.

CONCLUSIONS

Ambient CO exposure increased the risk of hospitalizations for CVD, especially for CHD in Beijing. Further studies are warranted to explore the association between ambient CO and hospitalizations for AF and HF.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity of ambient fine particles (PM2.5) measured in Seoul, Korea

Substantial increase in level of particulate matter has raised concerns in South Korea recently. Ambient particulate matter is classified as Group I carcinogen (IARC, 2013) and multiple epidemiological studies has demonstrated adverse health effects due to exposure of particulate matter. Fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) which has a diameter <2.5 μm is likely to penetrate deeply into lung and is known to be eliciting adverse health effects. A number of epidemiological studies have been conducted on adverse health effects of PM-related diseases and mortality rate, yet particulate matter (PM)-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) activity at the cellular level has not been actively studied in Korea. This study assessed PM-induced oxidative potential by exposure of collected ambient PM_2.5 samples to the rat alveolar macrophage cell line. The characteristics of PM_2.5 in Korea were further characterized by linking chemical constituents and contributing sources to ROS. PM_2.5 mass concentration during the cold season was relatively higher than mass concentration during the warm season and chemical constituents except for Secondary Organic Carbon (SOC) and SO₄^2- which both showed similar trends in both the cold and cold seasons. The concentration of crustal elements was especially high during the cold season which can be an indication of long range transport of Asian dust. Water soluble organic carbon and water soluble transition metals (Cr and Zn) were also shown to be correlated to oxidative potential and metals such as As and V were shown to have a high contribution to ROS activity according to stepwise multiple linear regression. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) results identified six factors that can be interpreted as soil, mobile, industry, secondary inorganic aerosol, secondary organic aerosol and oil combustion. Moreover, through Principal Component Regression (PCR), industry, soil, mobile and SIA were shown to be statistically significant sources in a relation to ROS activity.

Fine particle matter disrupts the blood-testis barrier by activating TGF-β3/p38 MAPK pathway and decreasing testosterone secretion in rat

Fine particle matter (PM) is correlated with male reproductive dysfunction in animals and humans, but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. To investigate the toxic mechanism of PM, 32 male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were exposed to saline or PM_2.5 with the doses of 1.8, 5.4, and 16.2 mg/kg.b.w. via intratracheal instillation, respectively, one time every 3 days, in total times for 30 days. Sperm concentration, hormone level, the expressions of BTB-associated protein and the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, tumor necrosis factor α and transforming growth factor β3 levels were detected. The results showed a decrease in sperm number, testosterone and luteinizing hormone levels and altered ultrastructure of BTB in testis of rat after exposure to PM_2.5 . The protein levels of N-Cadherin, Occludin, Claudin-11, and Connexin-43 were significantly decreased in the testes. TGF-β3 content in testes showed increase, with the p-p38/p38 MAPK ratio also increasing after PM_2.5 exposure. These results demonstrate that PM_2.5 restrained the expressions of BTB-associated proteins through activating TGF-β3/p38 MAPK pathway and decreasing testosterone secretion, and therefore lead to the damage of BTB resulting in the decrease of sperm quality, which might be the potential reasons for its negative effects on spermatogenesis and male reproduction.
