The impact of long- and short-term exposure to different ambient air pollutants on cognitive function in China

Innovative approaches for accurate ozone prediction and health risk analysis in South Korea: The combined effectiveness of deep learning and AirQ

Short-term exposure to ground-level ozone (O3) poses significant health risks, particularly respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, and mortality. This study addresses the pressing need for accurate O3 forecasting to mitigate these risks, focusing on South Korea. We introduce Deep Bias Correction (Deep-BC), a novel framework leveraging Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), to refine hourly O3 forecasts from the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. Our approach involves training Deep-BC using data from 2016 to 2019, including CMAQ's 72-hour O3 forecasts, 31 meteorological variables from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model, and previous days' station measurements of 6 air pollutants. Deep-BC significantly outperforms CMAQ in 2021, reducing biases in O3 forecasts. Furthermore, we utilize Deep-BC's daily maximum 8-hour average O3 (MDA8 O3) forecasts as input for the AirQ+ model to assess O3's potential impact on mortality across seven major provinces of South Korea: Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Incheon, Daejeon, Ulsan, and Sejong. Short-term O3 exposure is associated with 0.40 % to 0.48 % of natural cause and respiratory deaths and 0.67 % to 0.81 % of cardiovascular deaths. Gender-specific analysis reveals higher mortality rates among men, particularly from respiratory causes. Our findings underscore the critical need for region-specific interventions to address air pollution's detrimental effects on public health in South Korea. By providing improved O3 predictions and quantifying its impact on mortality, this research offers valuable insights for formulating targeted strategies to mitigate air pollution's adverse effects. Moreover, we highlight the urgency of proactive measures in health policies, emphasizing the significance of accurate forecasting and effective interventions to safeguard public health from the deleterious effects of air pollution.

Association of solid fuel use with cognitive function and the modifying role of lifestyle: A nationwide cohort study in China

BACKGROUND

As opposed to a healthy lifestyle, indoor air pollution from solid fuel use may be harmful for cognitive function. However, the extent to which lifestyle modifies the association between solid fuel use and cognitive function remains unknown.

METHODS

A total of 21,008 individuals aged 16 to 92 were enrolled in 2010 and followed up to 2014 in the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). Cognitive function was assessed using standardized math and word tests in two waves. Solid fuel use at baseline was assessed by self-reporting of firewood, straw, or coal used for cooking. Lifestyle profile was classified into two groups (favorable vs. unfavorable) based on five modifiable lifestyle factors including alcohol drinking, smoking, body mass index, diet, and physical activity. Linear mixed-effects models were employed to assess the association of solid fuel use and lifestyle with cognitive function. The effect modification of lifestyle was analyzed.

RESULTS

A total of 49.7% of the study population used solid fuels for cooking and 17.4% had a favorable lifestyle. Solid fuel use was associated with a significant decrease in cognitive function (β = -0.29, 95% CI: -0.39, -0.19 for math test; β = -0.62, 95% CI: -0.84, -0.41 for word test). Lifestyle significantly modified this association (p-interaction: 0.006 for math test; 0.016 for word test), with the corresponding association being less pronounced among participants adhering to a favorable lifestyle compared to those with an unfavorable lifestyle.

CONCLUSION

A favorable lifestyle may attenuate the adverse association between solid fuel use and cognitive function. Adopting a favorable lifestyle has the potential to mitigate the adverse neurological effects due to indoor air pollution.

Spatiotemporal characteristics analysis of multi-factorial air pollution in the Jing-Jin-Ji region based on improved sequential ICI method and novel grey spatiotemporal incidence models

Air pollution shares the attributes of multi-factorial influence and spatiotemporal complexity, leading to air pollution control assistance models easily falling into a state of failure. To address this issue, we design a framework containing improved data fusion method, novel grey incidence models and air pollution spatiotemporal analysis to analyze the complex characteristics of air pollution under the fusion of multiple factors. Firstly, we improve the existing data fusion method for multi-factor fusion. Subsequently, we construct two grey spatiotemporal incidence models to examine the spatiotemporal characteristics of multi-factorial air pollution in network relationships and changing trends. Furthermore, we propose two new properties that can manifest the performance of grey incidence analysis, and we provide detailed proof of the properties of the new models. Finally, in the Jing-Jin-Ji region, the novel models are used to study the network relationships and trend changes of air pollution. The findings are as follows: (1) Two highly polluted belts in the region require attention. (2) Although the air pollution network under multi-factorial fusion obeys the first law of geography, the network density and node density exhibit significant variations. (3) From 2013 to 2021, all pollutants except O3 show improvement. (4) Recommendations for responses are presented based on the above-mentioned results. (5) The parameter analyses, model comparisons, Monte Carlo experiments and model feature summaries illustrate that the proposed models are practical, interpretable and considerably outperform various prevailing competitors with remarkable universality.

Associations between short-term exposure to air pollution and thyroid function in a representative sample of the Korean population

BACKGROUND

Disruption of thyroid function can profoundly affect various organ systems. However, studies on the association between air pollution and thyroid function are relatively scarce and most studies have focused on the long-term effects of air pollution among pregnant women.

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to explore the associations between short-term exposure to air pollution and thyroid function in the general population.

METHODS

Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015) were analyzed (n = 5,626). Air pollution concentrations in residential addresses were estimated using Community Multiscale Air Quality models. The moving averages of air pollution over 7 days were set as exposure variables through exploratory analyses. Linear regression and quantile g-computation models were constructed to assess the effects of individual air pollutants and air pollution mixture, respectively.

RESULTS

A 10-ppb increase in NO2 (18.8-μg/m3 increase) and CO (11.5-μg/m3 increase) was associated with 2.43% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.42, 4.48] and 0.19% (95% CI: 0.01, 0.36) higher thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels, respectively. A 10-μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and a 10-ppb increase in O3 (19.6-μg/m3 increment) were associated with 0.87% (95% CI: 1.47, -0.27) and 0.59% (95% CI: 1.18, -0.001) lower free thyroxine (fT4) levels, respectively. A simultaneous quartile increase in PM2.5, NO2, O3, and CO levels was associated with lower fT4 but not TSH levels.

CONCLUSIONS

As the subtle changes in thyroid function can affect various organ systems, the present results may have substantial public health implications despite the relatively modest effect sizes. Because this was a cross-sectional study, it is necessary to conduct further experimental or repeated-measures studies to consolidate the current results.

Exposure to ambient air pollution and cognitive function: an analysis of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing cohort

BACKGROUND

An increasing number of studies suggest adverse effects of exposure to ambient air pollution on cognitive function, but the evidence is still limited. We investigated the associations between long-term exposure to air pollutants and cognitive function in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) cohort of older adults.

METHODS

Our sample included 8,883 individuals from ELSA, based on a nationally representative study of people aged ≥ 50 years, followed-up from 2002 until 2017. Exposure to air pollutants was modelled by the CMAQ-urban dispersion model and assigned to the participants' residential postcodes. Cognitive test scores of memory and executive function were collected biennially. The associations between these cognitive measures and exposure to ambient concentrations of NO2, PM10, PM2.5 and ozone were investigated using mixed-effects models adjusted for time-varying age, physical activity and smoking status, as well as baseline gender and level of education.

RESULTS

Increasing long-term exposure per interquartile range (IQR) of NO2 (IQR: 13.05 μg/m3), PM10 (IQR: 3.35 μg/m3) and PM2.5 (IQR: 2.7 μg/m3) were associated with decreases in test scores of composite memory by -0.10 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.14, -0.07), -0.02 [-0.04, -0.01] and -0.08 [-0.11, -0.05], respectively. The same increases in NO2, PM10 and PM2.5 were associated with decreases in executive function score of -0.31 [-0.38, -0.23], -0.05 [-0.08, -0.02] and -0.16 [-0.22, -0.10], respectively. The association with ozone was inverse across both tests. Similar results were reported for the London-dwelling sub-sample of participants.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study was based on a long follow-up with several repeated measurements per cohort participant and long-term air pollution exposure assessment at a fine spatial scale. Increasing long-term exposure to NO2, PM10 and PM2.5 was associated with a decrease in cognitive function in older adults in England. This evidence can inform policies related to modifiable environmental exposures linked to cognitive decline.

Exposure of Danio rerio to environmental sulfamethoxazole may contribute to neurobehavioral abnormalities via gut microbiome disturbance

The neurotoxic effects and mechanisms of low-dose and long-term sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) exposure remain unknown. This study exposed zebrafish to environmental SMZ concentrations and observed behavioral outcomes. SMZ exposure increased hyperactivity and altered the transcript levels of 17 genes associated with neurological function. It impaired intestinal function by reducing the number of intestinal goblet cells and lipid content. Metabolomic results indicated that the contents of several lipids and amino acids in the gut were altered, which might affect the expression levels of neurological function-related genes. Metagenomic results demonstrated that SMZ exposure substantially altered the composition of the gut microbiome. Zebrafish receiving a transplanted fecal microbiome from the SMZ group were also found to exhibit abnormal behavior, suggesting that the gut microbiome is an important target for SMZ exposure-induced neurobehavioral abnormalities. Multi-omics correlation analysis revealed that gut micrometabolic function was related to differential gut metabolite levels, which may affect neurological function through the gut-brain-axis. Reduced abundance of Lefsonia and Microbacterium was strongly correlated with intestinal metabolic function and may be the key bacterial genera in neurobehavioral changes. This study confirms for the first time that SMZ-induced neurotoxicity in zebrafish is closely mediated by alterations in the gut microbiome.

Associations between parental adherence to healthy lifestyles and cognitive performance in offspring: A prospective cohort study in China

BACKGROUND

Previous studies have reported associations of specific maternal and paternal lifestyle factors with offspring's cognitive development during early childhood. This study aimed to investigate the prospective associations between overall parental lifestyle and offspring's cognitive performance during adolescence and young adulthood in China.

METHODS

We included 2531 adolescents aged 10-15 years at baseline in 2010 from the China Family Panel Studies. A healthy parental lifestyle score (ranged 0-5) was constructed based on the following five modifiable lifestyle factors: Smoking, drinking, exercise, sleep, and diet. Generalized estimating equation models were used to examine the association between baseline parental healthy lifestyle scores and offspring's fluid and crystallized intelligence in subsequent years (2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018).

RESULTS

Offspring in the top tertile of parental healthy lifestyle scores performed better in overall fluid intelligence (multivariable-adjusted β = 0.53, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.29-0.77) and overall crystallized intelligence (multivariable-adjusted β = 0.35, 95% CI: 0.16-0.54) than those in the bottom tertile of parental healthy lifestyle scores. The results were similar after further adjustment for the offspring's healthy lifestyle scores and persisted across the subgroups of parental socioeconomic status. Additionally, maternal and paternal healthy lifestyle scores were independently associated with better offspring's cognitive performance, with significant contribution observed for paternal never-smoking, weekly exercise, and diversified diet. When both parents and offspring adhered to a healthier lifestyle, we observed the highest level of the offspring's overall crystallized intelligence.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study indicates that parental adherence to a healthier lifestyle is associated with significantly better offspring's cognitive performance during adolescence and early adulthood, regardless of socioeconomic status. These findings highlight the potential cognitive benefits of promoting healthy lifestyles among parents of adolescents.

When Space and Time Matter in Environmental Injustice: A Bayesian Analysis of the Association between Socio-economic Disadvantage and Air Pollution in Greater Mexico City

Environmental injustice refers to the unequal burden of pollutants on groups with lower socioeconomic status. An increasing number of studies have identified associations between high levels of pollution and socioeconomic disadvantage. However, few studies have controlled adequately for spatio-temporal variations in pollution. This study uses a Bayesian approach to explore the association between socioeconomic disadvantage and pollution in Mexico City Metropolitan Area. We quantify the association of socioeconomic disadvantage with PM10 and ozone and evaluate the impact of accounting for spatio-temporal structure of the pollution data. We find a significant positive association between socio-economic disadvantage and pollution for levels of PM10, but not ozone. The inclusion of the spatio-temporal element in the modeling results in improved weaker estimates of this association but this does not alter results substantially. These findings confirm the robustness of previous studies that found signs of environmental injustice where spatio-temporal variations have not been explicitly considered, confirming that targeted policies to reduce pollution in socio-economically disadvantaged areas are required.

Long-term exposure to air pollution and risk of insulin resistance: A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

The effects of air pollution on metabolism have become a popular research topic, and a large number of studies had confirmed that air pollution exposure could induce insulin resistance (IR) to varying degrees, but the results were inconsistent, especially for the long-term exposures. The aim of the current study was to further investigate the potential effects of air pollution on IR.

METHODS

A systematic review and meta-analysis of four electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane were conducted, searching for relevant studies published before June 10, 2023, in order to explore the potential relationships between long-term exposure to air pollution and IR. A total of 10 studies were included for data analysis, including seven cohort studies and three cross-sectional studies. Four major components of air pollution, including PM2.5 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 2.5 µm or less), PM10 (particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of 10 µm or less), NO2, and SO2 were selected, and each analyzed for the potential impacts on insulin resistance, in the form of adjusted percentage changes in the homeostasis assessment model of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR).

RESULTS

This systematic review and meta-analysis showed that for every 1 μg/m³ increase in the concentration of selected air pollutants, PM2.5 induced a 0.40% change in HOMA-IR (95%CI: -0.03, 0.84; I2 =67.4%, p = 0.009), while PM10 induced a 1.61% change (95%CI: 0.243, 2.968; I2 =49.1%, p = 0.001). Meanwhile, the change in HOMA-IR due to increased NO2 or SO2 exposure concentration was only 0.09% (95%CI: -0.01, 0.19; I2 =83.2%, p = 0.002) or 0.01% (95%CI: -0.04, 0.06; I2 =0.0%, p = 0.638), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Long-term exposures to PM2.5, PM10, NO2 or SO2 are indeed associated with the odds of IR. Among the analyzed pollutants, inhalable particulate matters appear to exert greater impacts on IR.

Effect of low-frequency noise exposure on cognitive function: a systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Low-frequency noise may cause changes in cognitive function. However, there is no established consensus on the effect of low-frequency noise on cognitive function. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to explore the relationship between low-frequency noise exposure and cognitive function.

METHODS

We conducted a systematic review and identified original studies written in English on low-frequency noise and cognition published before December 2022 using the PsycINFO, PubMed, Medline, and Web of Science databases. The risk of bias was evaluated according to established guidelines. A random-effects meta-analysis was performed where appropriate. To explore the association between low-frequency noise exposure and cognitive function, we reviewed eight relevant studies. These studies covered cognitive functions grouped into four domains: attention, executive function, memory, and higher-order cognitive functions. The data extraction process was followed by a random-effects meta-analysis for each domain, which allowed us to quantify the overall effect.

RESULTS

Our analysis of the selected studies suggested that interventions involving low-frequency noise only had a negative impact on higher-order cognitive functions (Z = 2.42, p = 0.02), with a standardized mean difference of -0.37 (95% confidence interval: -0.67, -0.07). A moderate level of heterogeneity was observed among studies (p = 0.24, I2 = 29%, Tau2 = 0.03).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study findings suggest that low-frequency noise can negatively impact higher-order cognitive functions, such as logical reasoning, mathematical calculation, and data processing. Therefore, it becomes important to consider the potential negative consequences of low-frequency noise in everyday situations, and proactive measures should be taken to address this issue and mitigate the associated potential adverse outcomes.

The effects of heatwave on cognitive impairment among older adults: Exploring the combined effects of air pollution and green space

The association between heatwaves and cognitive impairment in older adults, especially the joint effect of air pollution and green space on this association, remains unknown. The present cohort study used data from waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) from 2008 to 2018. Heatwaves were defined as having daily maximum temperature ≥ 92.5th, 95th and 97.5th percentile that continued at least two, three and four days, measured as the one-year heatwave days prior to the participants' incident cognitive impairment. Data on the annual average air pollutant concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) as well as green space exposure (according to the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI)) were collected. Time-varying Cox proportional hazards models were constructed to examine the independent effect of heatwaves on cognitive impairment and the combined effect of heatwaves, air pollution, and green space on cognitive impairment. Potential multiplicative interactions were examined by adding a product term of air pollutants and NDVI with heatwaves in the models. The relative excess risk due to interaction (RERI) was calculated to reflect additive interactions. We found that heatwave exposure was associated with higher risks of cognitive impairment, with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) ranging from 1.035 (95 % CI: 1.016-1.055) to 1.058 (95 % CI: 1.040-1.075). We observed a positive interaction of PM2.5 concentrations, O3 concentrations, lack of green space, and heatwave exposure on a multiplicative scale (HRs for product terms >1). Furthermore, we found a synergistic interaction of PM2.5 concentrations, O3, lack of green space, and heatwave exposure on an additive scale, with RERIs >0. These results suggest that extreme heat exposure may be a potential risk factor for cognitive impairment in older adults. Additionally, coexposure to air pollution and lack of green space exacerbated the adverse effects of heatwaves on cognitive function.

A perspective on the role of physiological stresses in cancer, diabetes and cognitive disease as environmental diseases

With rapid industrialization, urbanization, and climate change, the impact of environmental factors on human health is becoming increasingly evident and understanding the complex mechanisms involved is vital from a healthcare perspective. Nevertheless, the relationship between physiological stress resulting from environmental stressors and environmental disease is complex and not well understood. Chronic exposure to environmental stressors, such as air and water contaminants, pesticides, and toxic metals, has been recognized as a potent elicitor of physiological responses ranging from systemic inflammation to immune system dysregulation causing or progressing environmental diseases. Conversely, physiological stress can exacerbate susceptibility to environmental diseases. Stress-induced alterations in immune function and hormonal balance may impair the ability to detoxify harmful substances and combat pathogens. Additionally, prolonged stress can impact lifestyle choices, leading to harmful behaviors. Understanding the link between physiological stress and environmental disease requires a systematic, multidisciplinary approach. Addressing this complex relationship necessitates the establishment of a global research network. This perspective discusses the intricate interplay between physiological stress and environmental disease, focusing on common environmental diseases, cancer, diabetes, and cognitive degeneration. Furthermore, we highlight the intricate and reciprocal nature of the connection between physiological stress and these environmental diseases giving a perspective on the current state of knowledge as well as identifying where further information is necessary. Recognizing the role of physiological stress in environmental health outcomes will aid in the development of comprehensive strategies to safeguard public health and promote ecological balance.

Air pollution and motor vehicle collisions in New York city

Road traffic accidents are a pervasive feature of everyday life, killing 36,500 people, injuring 4.5 million and, overall, generating costs to the American society of $340 billion in 2019. Understanding the underlying factors can improve the design of prevention strategies. We use all road traffic collisions in New York City between 2013 and 2021 (N = 1,269,600) and match each individual collision to the nearest weather and air pollution station. Our study uses highly disaggregated data using an hourly frequency of collisions at a fine spatial level incorporating various air pollutants and weather factors. We employ an instrumental variable approach using temperature inversions to provide exogenous variation in air pollution addressing endogeneity and measurement error concerns. We find that higher concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) increase the number of collisions but leave the severity (persons injured or killed) unaffected. Part of this can be explained by the effect of air pollutants on aggressive behavior: CO (p < .05) and SO2 (p < .01) increase the number of collisions caused by aggressive driving. Interestingly, this channel is only present in male drivers. Our results provide additional evidence that air pollution not only adversely affects health, but also has "non-health" related effects which are costly for the society.

The joint effect and hemodynamic mechanism of PA and PM2.5 exposure on cognitive function: A randomized controlled trial study

BACKGROUND

While PM2.5 has been shown to impair cognitive function, physical activity (PA) is known to enhance it. Nonetheless, considering the increased inhalation of PM2.5 during exercise, the potential of PA to counteract the detrimental effects of PM2.5, along with the underlying hemodynamic mechanisms, remains uncertain.

METHODS

We conducted a double-blinded, randomized controlled trial among healthy young adults in Beijing, China. Ninety-three participants were randomly allocated to groups experiencing different intensities of PA interventions, and either subjected to purified or unpurified air conditions. Cognitive function was measured by the Color-Word Matching Stroop task, and the hemodynamic response was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy during participants performed the Stroop task both before and after the intervention. Linear mixed-effect models were used to estimate the impact of PA and PM2.5 on cognitive function and hemodynamic response.

RESULTS

The reaction time for congruent and incongruent Stroop tasks improved by - 80.714 (95% CI: -136.733, -24.695) and - 105.843 (95% CI: -188.6, -23.085) milliseconds after high-intensity interval training (HIIT) intervention. PM2.5 and HIIT had interaction effects on cognition, such that every 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 attenuated the benefits of HIIT on reaction time by 2.231 (95% CI: 0.523, 3.938) and 3.305 (95% CI: 0.791, 5.819) milliseconds for congruent and incongruent Stroop tasks. Moreover, we divided participants into high and low PM2.5 exposure groups based on average PM2.5 concentration (32.980 μg/m3), and found that HIIT intervention in high PM2.5 concentration led to 69.897 (95% CI: 9.317, 130.476) and 99.269 (95% CI: 10.054, 188.485) milliseconds increased in the reaction time of congruent and incongruent Stroop, compared with the control group among low PM2.5. Furthermore, we found a significant interaction effects of PM2.5 and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) on the middle frontal gyrus (MFG) and dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus (DLPFC). PM2.5 and HIIT had a significant interaction effect on the DLPFC.

CONCLUSIONS

HIIT improved cognitive function, but the cognitive benefits of HIIT were attenuated or even reversed under high PM2.5 exposure. The activation of the DLPFC and MFG could serve as hemodynamic mechanisms to explain the joint effect of PA and PM2.5.

Leisure-time physical activity mitigated the cognitive effect of PM2.5 and PM2.5 components exposure: Evidence from a nationwide longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) impairs cognition, while physical activity (PA) improves cognitive function. However, whether taking PA with PM2.5 exposure is still beneficial to cognition remains unknown.

METHODS

We utilized national representative longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Study (CFPS), comprising a total sample of 108,099 from 2010 to 2018 in three waves. Cognitive performance and leisure-time PA were measured using the standard cognitive module and Godin-Shephard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire. Gridded overall PM2.5 and major chemical components of PM2.5 were estimated using a two-stage machine learning model and matched to each participant based on their residential location. Mixed-effect models and difference-in-difference models were employed to investigate the individual and joint effects of total PM2.5, PM2.5 components, and leisure-time PA on cognition.

RESULTS

Every 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 was associated with a -0.035 (95% confidence interval [CI] = -0.052, -0.018) point change in cognitive score. All PM2.5 components exhibited negative associations with cognitive change, with black carbon (BC) contributing the most significant cognitive decline (β = -1.025, 95% CI = -1.367, -0.683). Every one-time (or one-hour) increase in leisure-time PA frequency (or PA time) per week was associated with an increase in cognitive score by 0.576 (0.270) points (PA frequency: 95% CI = 0.544, 0.608, PA time: 95% CI = 0.248, 0.293). PA frequency (β = -0.005, 95% CI = -0.006, -0.003) and PA time (β = -0.002, 95% CI = -0.003, -0.001) exhibited interactive effects with PM2.5. Increased PA frequency and time were more beneficial to cognitive function in the low PM2.5 exposure group compared to those exposed to high PM2.5 levels. Moreover, relative to lower PM2.5 exposure, the cognitive benefits of physically active individuals with higher PM2.5 exposure were attenuated but still improved cognition when compared to those with no PA.

CONCLUSION

Engaging in leisure-time PA provides cognitive benefits even under PM2.5 exposure, although PM2.5 exposure attenuates these benefits. Among all PM2.5 components, BC demonstrated the most significant cognitive hazard and interaction with leisure-time PA. Promoting PA as a preventive measure may offer a cost-effective and convenient strategy to mitigate the negative impact of PM2.5 exposure on cognition. There is no excuse to avoid PA under PM2.5 exposure, as its cognitive benefits persist even in polluted environments.

Association between mercury exposure and lung function in young adults: A prospective cohort study in Shandong, China

BACKGROUND

Mercury has been associated with many adverse health outcomes. However, limited studies have explored the association between blood mercury concentrations and lung function.

OBJECTIVE

To examine the association between blood mercury concentrations and lung function among young adults.

METHODS

We conducted a prospective cohort study among 1800 college students based on the Chinese Undergraduates Cohort in Shandong, China during August 2019 and September 2020. Lung function indicators including forced vital capacity (FVC, ml), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV₁, ml) and peak expiratory flow (PEF, ml) were collected with a spirometers (Chestgraph Jr. HI-101, Chest M.I., Tokyo, Japan). The blood mercury concentration was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. We divided participants into low (≤25 percentiles), intermediate (25-75 percentiles), and high (≥75 percentile) subgroups according to blood mercury concentrations. The multiple linear regression model was used to examine the associations between blood mercury concentrations and lung function changes. Stratification analyses by sex and fish consumption frequency were also conducted.

RESULTS

The results showed that each 2-fold increase in blood mercury concentrations was significantly associated with -70.75 ml [95 % confidence interval (CI): -122.35, -19.15] change in FVC, -72.68 ml (95%CI: -120.36, -25.00) in FEV₁, and -158.06 ml (95%CI: -283.77, -32.35) in PEF. The effect was more pronounced among participants with high blood mercury and male participants. Participants who consumed fish more than once a week more likely to be affected by mercury.

CONCLUSION

Our study indicated that blood mercury was significantly associated with decreased lung function in young adults. It is necessary to implement corresponding measures to reduce the effect of mercury on the respiratory system, especially for men and people who consumed fish more than once a week.

Atmospheric particulate matter impairs cognition by modulating synaptic function via the nose-to-brain route

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM), a ubiquitous air pollutant, is the leading environmental risk factor for mortality worldwide. Experimental and epidemiological studies consistently suggest a strong link between long-term exposure to PM_2.5 (<2.5 μm, fine PM) and cognitive impairment. The neuroinflammatory response is presumed to be one of the main mechanisms of PM_2.5-induced cognitive impairment, possibly leading to synaptic dysfunction. However, the main route and mechanism underlying the cause of cognitive dysfunction and pathogenic alterations in PM_2.5-exposure mice remain poorly understood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the main route and mechanism of PM_2.5-induced cognitive impairment. Our results showed that PM_2.5 directly entered the brain following nasal administration, and both the short-term PM_2.5 administration via atomization and nasal drops induced learning and memory impairments and neuronal damage in adult mice. Moreover, astrocytes and microglia were both activated in the two short-term PM_2.5 exposure models, while few changes in the inflammatory response were observed in the peripheral circulatory system. Furthermore, a further transcriptional analysis revealed that short-term PM_2.5 administration led to cognitive impairment mainly by modulating synaptic functions and that although glia were activated, the glia-related pathological pathways were not significantly activated. Notably, following PM_2.5 exposure, PLX3397-induced microglial deletion did not restore the cognitive function of the mice. In conclusion, our results provide evidence that PM_2.5 enters the brain via the nose-to-brain route to impair cognitive function, and short-term exposure to PM_2.5 directly alters synaptic function rather than the neuroinflammatory response to affect cognition.

Short-term exposure to ozone and cause-specific mortality risks and thresholds in China: Evidence from nationally representative data, 2013-2018

BACKGROUND

Ambient ozone pollution is steadily increasing and becoming a major environmental risk factor contributing to the global disease burden. Although the association between short-term ozone exposure and mortality has been widely studied, results are mostly reported on deaths from non-accidental or total cardiopulmonary disease rather than a spectrum of causes. In particular, a knowledge gap still exists for the potential thresholds in mortality risks.

METHODS

This nationwide time-series study in China included 323 counties totaling 230,266,168 residents. Daily maximum 8-hour average was calculated as the ozone exposure metric. A two-stage statistical approach was adopted to assess ozone effects on 21 cause-specific deaths for 2013-2018. The subset approach and threshold approach were utilized to explore potential thresholds, and stratification analysis was used to evaluate population susceptibility.

RESULTS

On average, the annual mean ozone concentration was 93.4 μg/m³ across 323 counties. A 10-μg/m³ increase in lag 0-1 day of ozone was associated with increases of 0.12 % in mortality risk from non-accidental disease, 0.11 % from circulatory disease, 0.09 % from respiratory disease, 0.29 % from urinary system disease, and 0.20 % from nervous system disease. There may be a "safe" threshold in the ozone-mortality association, which may be between 60 and 100 μg/m³, and vary by cause of death. Women and older adults (especially those over 75) are more affected by short-term ozone exposure. Populations in North China had a higher risk of ozone-related circulatory mortality, while populations in South China had a higher risk of ozone-related respiratory mortality.

CONCLUSIONS

National findings link short-term ozone exposure to premature death from circulatory, respiratory, neurological, and urinary diseases, and provide evidence for a potential "safe" threshold in the association of ozone and mortality. These findings have important implications for helping policymakers tighten the relevant air quality standards and developing early warning systems for public health protection in China.

Tracking long-term population exposure risks to PM2.5 and ozone in urban agglomerations of China 2015-2021

China has experienced severe air pollution in the past decade, especially PM2.5 and emerging ozone pollution recently. In this study, we comprehensively analyzed long-term population exposure risks to PM2.5 and ozone in urban agglomerations of China during 2015-2021 regarding two-stage clean-air actions based on the Ministry of Ecology and the Environment (MEE) air monitoring network. Overall, the ratio of the population living in the regions exceeding the Chinese National Ambient Air Quality Standard (35 μg/m3) decreases by 29.9 % for PM2.5 from 2015 to 2021, driven by high proportions in the Middle Plain (MP, 42.3 %) and Lan-Xi (35.0 %) regions. However, this ratio almost remains unchanged for ozone and even increases by 1.5 % in the MP region. As expected, the improved air quality leads to 234.7 × 103 avoided premature mortality (ΔMort), mainly ascribed to the reduction in PM2.5 concentration. COVID-19 pandemic may influence the annual variation of PM2.5-related ΔMort as it affects the shape of the population exposure curve to become much steeper. Although all eleven urban agglomerations share stroke (43.6 %) and ischaemic heart disease (IHD, 30.1 %) as the two largest contributors to total ΔMort, cause-specific ΔMort is highly regional heterogeneous, in which ozone-related ΔMort is significantly higher (21 %) in the Tibet region than other urban agglomeration. Despite ozone-related ΔMort being one order of magnitude lower than PM2.5-related ΔMort from 2015 to 2021, ozone-related ΔMort is predicted to increase in major urban agglomerations initially along with a continuous decline for PM2.5-related ΔMort from 2020 to 2060, highlighting the importance of ozone control. Coordinated controls of PM2.5 and O3 are warranted for reducing health burdens in China during achieving carbon neutrality.

Assessment of meteorological settings on air quality modeling system-a proposal for UN-SDG and regulatory studies in non-homogeneous regions in Brazil

Air quality models are essential tools to meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN-SDG) because they are effective in guiding public policies for the management of air pollutant emissions and their impacts on the environment and human health. Despite its importance, Brazil still lacks a guide for choosing and setting air quality models for regulatory purposes. Based on this, the current research aims to assess the combined WRF/CALMET/CALPUFF models for representing SO₂ dispersion over non-homogeneous regions as a regulatory model for policies in Brazilian Metropolitan Regions to satisfy the UN-SDG. The combined system was applied to the Rio de Janeiro Metropolitan Area (RJMA), which is known for its physiographic complexity. In the first step, the WRF model was evaluated against surface-observed data. The local circulation was underestimated, while the prevailing observational winds were well represented. In the second step, it was verified that all CALMET three meteorological configurations performed better for the most frequent wind speed classes so that the largest SO₂ concentrations errors occurred during light winds. Among the meteorological settings in WRF/CALMET/CALPUFF, the joined use of observed and modeled meteorological data yielded the best results for the dispersion of pollutants. This result emphasizes the relevance of meteorological data composition in complex regions with unsatisfactory monitoring given the inherent limitations of prognostic models and the excessive extrapolation of observed data that can generate distortions of reality. This research concludes with the proposal of the WRF/CALMET/CALPUFF air quality regulatory system as a supporting tool for policies in the Brazilian Metropolitan Regions in the framework of the UN-SDG, particularly in non-homogeneous regions where steady-state Gaussian models are not applicable.

Effect of parental absence during infancy and early childhood on cognition and depression in later life: A national household longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

Early life experiences may have a persistent influence throughout life. However, little is known about the effect of parental absence during infancy and early childhood on offspring's cognition and risk of depression.

METHODS

Data were obtained from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). We examined the effect of parental absence during infancy and early childhood on cognitive development and depression in later life using weighted linear regression models. A series of sensitivity analyses and subgroup analyses were also conducted.

RESULTS

Parental absence during infancy and early childhood was associated with poor mathematics performance and high depression scores measured 8 years later. The coefficients of association between parental absence and math test performance and depression were -0.012 (95%CI: -0.024, -0.001, P = 0.031) and 0.009 (95%CI: 0.001, 0.017, P = 0.028) in adjusted models, respectively. Moreover, a similar association was observed among children who were females, urban dwellers, and had more years of education.

LIMITATIONS

Recall bias may exist for the exposure measure, and the current study cannot control residual confounders.

CONCLUSION

Long parental absence during infancy and early childhood may attenuate the cognitive process and increase risk of depression in later life, indicating the necessity of parental care as an intervention initiative.

The associations between sleep duration, cognitive function, and depressive symptoms: An analysis of Chinese adolescents from China Family Panel Studies

BACKGROUND

The adverse impact of depressive symptoms on adolescents' physical and psychological health is becoming increasingly prominent. This study aims to examine the association between sleep duration, cognitive function, and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents.

METHODS

This study used data on a sample of 3724 adolescents collected from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). The multivariate logistic regression was conducted to estimate the association between sleep duration, cognitive function (measured by mathematics and vocabulary), and depressive symptoms among Chinese adolescents; the mediating effects of cognitive function were calculated by mediating model.

RESULTS

The study found that approximately 6.49 % of Chinese adolescents had depressive symptoms, with an average CES-D8 score of 4.27 (SD: 3.11). Adolescents who reported a sleep duration of <6 h/night (OR = 2.34; 95 % CI = 1.30, 4.24) were at a higher risk of depressive symptoms, and the adolescents who had higher mathematics scores (>75 %) were more likely to be at a lower risk of depressive symptoms. Besides, the cognitive function competitively mediated the effect of sleep duration on depressive symptom (indirect effect = 0.043; 95 % CI = 0.023, 0.064).

LIMITATIONS

This is a cross-sectional study; all questions were self-reported; the sleep variable only included the sleep duration.

CONCLUSIONS

Our study highlights that short sleep duration might increase the risk of depressive symptoms, and increasing cognitive function might reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms in Chinese adolescents. The results displayed that sleep duration had a negatively direct effect on depressive symptoms, but the indirect effects of sleep duration on depressive symptoms via the cognitive function (i.e., mathematics and vocabulary tests) were significantly positive, indicating that the relationship between sleep duration and depressive symptoms was competitively mediated by cognitive function.

Short-term PM2.5 exposure and cognitive function: Association and neurophysiological mechanisms

BACKGROUND

Although converging evidence has demonstrated that exposure to fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) caused adverse effects on brain structure and cognitive function, the association between the short-term exposure to PM_2.5 and cognition dysfunction remained underexplored, especially possible neurophysiological mechanisms.

METHODS

We conducted a longitudinal observational study with four repeated measurement sessions among 90 young adults from September 2020 to June 2021. During each measurement session, we measured participants' personal-level air pollution exposure for one week with portable monitors, followed by executive function assessment and electrophysiological signal recording at an assessment center. Standard Stroop color-word test was used accompanied with electroencephalogram (EEG) recording to assess performance on executive function. We used linear mixed-effect model with lagged values of PM_2.5 levels to analyze the association between PM_2.5 exposure and changes in executive function, and mediation analysis to investigate mediation effect by EEG signal.

RESULTS

Adjusted mixed-effect models demonstrated that elevated PM_2.5 exposure three days prior to cognitive assessment (lag-3) was associated with (1) declined performance in both congruent and incongruent tasks in Stroop test, (2) reduced lower and upper alpha event-related desynchronization (ERD) during 500-1000 ms after stimuli, both indicating impaired executive control. Lower and upper alpha ERD also mediated observed associations between short-term PM_2.5 exposure and executive function. No significant associations were found between short-term PM_2.5 exposure or aperiodic exponents in tonic and phasic states, or periodic alpha oscillations in tonic state.

CONCLUSION

Our results provided evidence that short-term PM_2.5 exposure was associated with executive dysfunction. Reduced alpha ERD was likely to be the underlying pathway through which PM_2.5 induced adverse effects on neuron activities during cognitive tasks.

Factors leading to the trajectory of cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults using group-based trajectory modeling: A cohort study

Currently, studies exploring factors associated with the cognition at some time point and no study identifying the trajectories of cognitive changes and factors might associate with the trajectories of cognitive changes in people. This study was to identify factors associated with the trend of cognitive decline in middle-aged and older people. In this cohort study, the data of 6954 subjects were collected from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Survey database. Group-based trajectory modeling was applied for identifying three different trajectories of cognitive function change [high initial level and slow decline group (n = 1024), moderate initial level and moderate decline group (n = 2673) and low initial level and rapid decline (LRD) group (n = 3277)]. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify variables influencing factors of the trajectories of cognitive function in middle-aged and older people. The follow-up interval was 2 years from 2011 to 2015, and 3 years from 2015 to 2018 via face-to-face interview. High initial level and slow decline group versus LRD group, age (OR = 2.591, 95% CI: 1.962-3.421), gender (OR = 1.398, 95% CI: 1.133-1.725), education (OR = 0.051, 95% CI: 0.039-0.068), place of residence (OR = 2.768, 95% CI: 1.663-4.606), disabled (OR = 1.557, 95% CI: 1.189-2.039), family annual income (OR = 0.757, 95% CI: 0.618-0.929), sleep duration (OR = 1.266, 95% CI: 1.023-1.567), instrumental activity of daily living impairment (OR = 2.513, 95% CI: 1.947-3.245), community activities participation (OR = 0.611, 95% CI: 0.500-0.748), depression (OR = 1.471, 95% CI: 1.185-1.828), and systolic blood pressure (OR = 1.005, 95% CI: 1.001-1.009) were factors influencing the trajectories of cognitive function. Comparing moderate initial level and moderate decline group and LRD group, age (OR = 1.245, 95% CI: 1.052-1.474), gender (OR = 1.244, 95% CI: 1.062-1.458), education (OR = 0.244, 95% CI: 0.190-0.314), marital status (OR = 1.291, 95% CI: 1.079-1.546), place of residence (OR = 1.677, 95% CI: 1.358-2.071), disability (OR = 1.396, 95% CI: 1.180-1.652), smoking (OR = 1.249, 95% CI: 1.071-1.457), family annual income (OR = 0.863, 95% CI: 0.768-0.970), sleep duration (OR = 1.215, 95% CI: 0.973-1.541), instrumental activity of daily living impairment (OR = 1.309, 95% CI: 1.098-1.560), community activities participation (OR = 0.804, 95% CI: 0.718-0.900) and depression (OR = 1.383, 95% CI: 1.217-1.571) were factors associated with the trajectories of cognitive function changes. Middle-aged and older adults who had characteristics associated with increased risk of cognitive decline might be provided with timely interventions.

Air quality improvement and cognitive function benefit: Insight from clean air action in China

INTRODUCTION

Epidemiological evidence suggests associations between long-term exposure to air pollution and accelerated cognitive decline. China implemented a strict clean air action plan in 2013; however, it is unclear whether the improvement of air quality has alleviated cognitive impairment in the population.

METHODS

From the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, 8536 Chinese adults were enrolled in 2011 and followed up in 2015. Satellite-based spatiotemporal models were used to estimate exposure to air pollutants (including particles with diameters ≤1.0 μm [PM₁], ≤2.5 μm [PM_2.5], ≤10 μm [PM₁₀], nitrogen dioxide [NO₂], and ozone [O₃]). Cognitive function was evaluated using a structured questionnaire in three dimensions: episodic memory, orientation and attention, and visuoconstruction. The associations between changes in the levels of air pollutants and cognitive function were elucidated by a logistic model. The Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) model was applied to evaluate the cumulative effect of air pollutants.

RESULTS

The mean (standard deviation) age of all participants was 58.6 (8.7) years. The odds ratio (95% confidence interval) between the highest and the lowest quartile of PM₁ exposure reduction for cognitive impairment was 0.46 (0.41, 0.53) after adjusting for confounders. Similar protective effects of cognitive function were observed with the decrease in the level of PM_2.5 (0.34 [0.30, 0.39]), PM₁₀ (0.54 [0.48, 0.62]), and NO₂ (0.59 [0.51, 0.67]), while the reduction in O₃ appeared to be less related to changes in cognitive function (OR: 0.97 [0.85, 1.10]). The protective association of PM₁ reduction was stronger in males than in females. Decreased in PM_2.5 dominate the cognitive function benefit relative to PM₁, PM₁₀, NO₂.

CONCLUSIONS

The implementation of the clean air action plan led to a significant reduction in PM₁, PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and NO₂, which could slow the decline of cognitive function, while a reduction in O₃ may not.

Air pollution and mental health: associations, mechanisms and methods

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

There is increasing interest in the links between exposure to air pollution and a range of health outcomes. The association with mental health however is much less established. This article reviews developments in the field over the past 12 months, highlighting the evidence for causation, associations between multiple air pollutants and mental health outcomes, and assesses the challenges of researching this topic.

RECENT FINDINGS

Increasingly rigorous methods are being applied to the investigation of a broader range of mental health outcomes. These methods include basic science, neuroimaging, and observational studies representing diverse geographical locations. Cohort studies with linked high-resolution air pollutant exposure data are common, facilitating advanced analytic methods. To date, meta-analyses have demonstrated small and significant positive associations between long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and depressive symptoms and cognitive decline. Methodological complexities in measuring exposure and outcome pose ongoing difficulties for the field.

SUMMARY

Literature on this topic has recently seen an appreciable expansion. Work that better estimates daily exposure, controls for complex confounders, and is driven by hypotheses founded in candidate causal mechanisms would help clarify associations, and inform targeted interventions and policymakers.

Alcohol consumption, poor lifestyle choices, and air pollution worsen cognitive function in seniors: a cohort study in China

Based on the complexity of cognitive-related influences and the specificity of Chinese liquor culture, this study aimed to explore the associations and potential interactions between demographic characteristics, alcohol consumption, life and atmospheric environment, and cognitive function in seniors through a comprehensive analysis, in order to provide evidence support and feasible recommendations. The study sample was selected from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey, which included 40,583 seniors aged 65-115 years. Data analysis and processing were performed by R 4.0.4. The relationship between the factors and cognition was modeled and analyzed by generalized additive model, and the interaction was explored by combining the ANOVA. The generalized additive model confirmed that alcohol consumption was detrimental to the cognitive status of older adults, especially for liquor (≥ 38°) and beer. The higher the average daily alcohol consumption, the greater the impairment. SO₂ and PM_2.5 showed the same negative effects. In contrast, life environment factors such as good education, balanced diet, and positive activity participation had a positive effect on cognition in seniors. In addition, interactions between alcohol consumption and average daily alcohol consumption, frequency of vegetable and meat intake, and between open-air activities, and air pollution were also confirmed. Poor lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption, unbalanced diet, lower activity participation, and air pollution deteriorate cognitive function in seniors. It is recommended that the elderly population should avoid alcohol consumption, maintain a balanced diet, and be physically active. Attention should also be paid to the effects of air quality.

Does the Government’s Environmental Attention Affect Ambient Pollution? Empirical Research on Chinese Cities

Environmental pollution has attracted growing government attention. We employ a series of panel data regression models to measure and analyze the impact of environmental attention of 284 prefecture-level municipal governments on ambient pollution in China. The results show that: (1) The improvement of government environmental attention can curb ambient pollution. (2) The impact of government environmental attention on ambient pollution is heterogeneous in the difference of regional and local environmental pollution severity. (3) Government environmental attention inhibits ambient pollution through green development and industrial upgrading. The conclusions of this paper provide evidence and implications for environmental regulation in developing countries and cities.

Life-time summer heat exposure and lung function in young adults: A retrospective cohort study in Shandong China

BACKGROUND

The health impact of short-term heat exposure is well documented. However, limited studies explored the association between life-time summer heat exposure and lung function.

OBJECTIVE

To examine the association between life-time summer heat exposure and lung function among young adults.

METHODS

We conducted a retrospective cohort study among 1928 college students in Shandong, China from September 4, 2020 to November 15, 2020. Life-time summer heat exposure for participants were estimated based on the nearest station meteorological data after the participant's birth date and divided by their learning phases. Lung function indicators included forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1). A multiple linear regression model was conducted to examine the associations between summer heat exposure and lung function. Stratificationanalysis by cooling facilities and respiratory diseases history were also conducted.

RESULTS

The study subjects had a slight majority of women (58.8%), age 19.2 ± 0.6 years. Each 1 °C increase in life-time summer mean temperature was associated with 1.07% [95% confidence interval (CI): -1.95-0.18%] decrease in FVC and 0.88% (95 %CI: -1.71, -0.05%) decrease in FEV1. Participants with respiratory diseases and non-cooling facility users were more susceptible to summer heat exposure. The usage of fan and air condition could effectively reduce the deleterious heat effects on lung function.

CONCLUSION

Life-time summer heat exposure is significantly associated with the reduction of lung function in young adults. Cooling facilities are necessary for pre-school children to reduce heat effects. Fan and air-condition are effective cooling facilities, especially for people with respiratory diseases.

Long-term ozone exposure and cognitive impairment among Chinese older adults: A cohort study

Ambient particulate matter pollution has been linked to impaired cognitive performance, but the effect of ambient ozone exposure on cognitive function remains largely unknown. We examined the association of long-term ozone exposure with the risk of cognitive impairment among a national representative cohort of 9,544 Chinese older adults (aged 65 years and over) with baseline normal cognition from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2005-2018). The ozone exposure of each participant was measured by annual mean ozone concentrations for the county of residence. Cognitive function was assessed by the Chinese version of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We defined cognitive impairment as an MMSE score below 18 points accompanied by an MMSE score that declined ≥ 4 points from baseline. Cox proportional hazards models were applied to explore the association of ozone exposure with cognitive impairment. During the mean follow-up time of 6.5 years, 2,601 older adults developed cognitive impairment. Each 10-μg/m³ increase in annual mean ozone exposure was associated with a 10.4% increased risk of cognitive impairment. The exposure-response relationship between ozone exposure and risk of cognitive impairment showed a linear trend. Sensitivity analyses revealed the association to be robust. We found that older adults from Eastern, Central, and Southern China were particularly susceptible. Our results show that ozone is a risk factor for late-life cognitive decline. Reducing ambient ozone pollution may help delay the onset of cognitive impairment among older adults.

Noise pollution and human cognition: An updated systematic review and meta-analysis of recent evidence

BACKGROUND

This systematic review provides a comprehensive synthesis of recent epidemiological evidence that environmental noise negatively impacts human cognition.

METHODS

We update a prior review with recent publications (PROSPERO CRD42019151923). The strength of evidence for associations was assessed using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations) framework. We also conducted random-effects meta-analyses where suitable.

RESULTS

16 studies were identified and reviewed in tandem with 32 studies previously reviewed by Clark & Paunovic (2018). A meta-analysis from 3 studies found that reading comprehension scores in quiet classrooms were 0.80 (95% confidence interval: 0.40; 1.20) points higher than children in noisier classrooms. Meta-analysis of the impact of 1 dB (dB) increase in environmental noise on reading and language abilities gave a pooled beta coefficient of -0.11(95% confidence interval: -0.32; 0.10). A meta-analysis of Odds Ratios (OR) from 3 studies found higher odds of cognitive impairment in people aged 45 + with higher residential noise exposure (OR 1.40, 95% CI: 1.18;1.61). After qualitative synthesis of remaining studies, there was high quality evidence for an association between environmental noise and cognitive impairment in middle-to-older adults, moderate quality evidence for an association between aircraft noise and reading and language in children, and moderate quality evidence against an association between aircraft noise and executive functioning in children. Generally the literature was supportive for other cognitive outcomes, but with low or very low-quality evidence.

DISCUSSION

The evidence so far suggests that noise exposure is associated with cognition, but more good quality research using standardised methodology is required to corroborate these results and to allow for precise risk estimation by larger meta-analyses. There is also a need for more research with older teenagers and young-to-middle aged adults, on the synergistic effects of noise and air pollution, and in Africa, Central and South America, South Asia and Australasia.

Spatio-Temporal Characteristics of SO2 across Weifang from 2008 to 2020

China has achieved good results in SO₂ pollution control, but SO₂ pollution still exists in some areas. Analyzing the spatio-temporal distribution of SO₂ is critical for regional SO₂ pollution prevention and control. Compared with existing air pollution studies that paid more attention to PM₂.₅, NO₂ and O₃, and focused on the macro scale, this study took the small-scale Weifang city as the research area, analyzed the temporal and spatial changes in SO₂, discussed the migration trajectory of SO₂ pollution and explored the impact of wind on SO₂ pollution. The results show that the average annual concentration of SO₂ in Weifang has exhibited a downward trend in the past 13 years, showing the basic characteristics of “highest in winter, lowest in summer and slightly higher in spring and autumn”, “highest on Sunday, lowest on Thursday and gradually decreasing from Monday to Thursday” and “highest at 9 a.m., lowest at 4 p.m. and gradually increasing from midnight to 9 a.m.”. SO₂ concentration showed obvious spatial heterogeneity: higher in the north and lower in the south. In addition, Shouguang, Changyi and Gaomi were seriously polluted. The SO₂ pollution shifted from south to northeast. The clean wind direction (southeast wind and northeast wind) of Weifang city accounted for about 41%, and the pollution wind direction (northwest wind and west wind) accounted for about 7%. Drawing from the multi-scale analysis, vegetation, precipitation, temperature, transport situation and human activity were the most relevant factors. Limited to data collection, more quantitative research is needed to gain insight into the influence mechanism in the future.

Short-term effect of fine particulate matter and ozone on non-accidental mortality and respiratory mortality in Lishui district, China

Background

In recent years, air pollution has become an imminent problem in China. Few studies have investigated the impact of air pollution on the mortality of the middle-aged and elderly people. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impact of PM_2.5 (fine particulate matter) and O₃ (ozone) on non-accidental mortality and respiratory mortality of the middle-aged and elderly people in Lishui District of Nanjing and provide the evidence for potential prevention and control measures of air pollution.

Method

Using daily mortality and atmospheric monitoring data from 2015 to 2019, we applied a generalized additive model with time-series analysis to evaluate the association of PM_2.5 and O₃ exposure with daily non-accidental mortality and respiratory mortality in Lishui District. Using the population attributable fractions to estimate the death burden caused by short-term exposure to O₃ and PM_2.5。.

Result

For every 10 μg/m³ increase in PM_2.5, non-accidental mortality increased 0.94% with 95% confidence interval (CI) between 0.05 and 1.83%, and PM_2.5 had a more profound impact on females than males. For every 10 μg/m³ increase in O₃, respiratory mortality increased 1.35% (95% CI: 0.05, 2.66%) and O₃ had a more profound impact on males than females. Compared with the single pollutant model, impact of the two-pollutant model on non-accidental mortality and respiratory mortality slightly decreased. In summer and winter as opposed to the other seasons, O₃ had a more obvious impact on non-accidental mortality. The population attributable fractions of non-accidental mortality were 0.84% (95% CI:0.00, 1.63%) for PM_2.5 and respiratory mortality were 0.14% (95% CI:0.01, 0.26%) for O₃. For every 10 μg/m³ decrease in PM_2.5, 122 (95% CI: 6, 237) non-accidental deaths could be avoided. For every 10 μg/m³ decrease in O₃, 10 (95% CI: 1, 38) respiratory deaths could be avoided.

Conclusion

PM_2.5 and O₃ could significantly increase the risk of non-accidental and respiratory mortality in the middle-aged and elderly people in Lishui District of Nanjing. Exposed to air pollutants, men were more susceptible to O₃ damage, and women were more susceptible to PM_2.5 damage. Reduction of PM_2.5 and O₃ concentration in the air may have the potential to avoid considerable loss of lives.
