Bioavailability and soil-to-crop transfer of heavy metals in farmland soils: A case study in the Pearl River Delta, South China

Identifying interactive effects of spatial drivers in soil heavy metal pollutants using interpretable machine learning models

The accurate identification of spatial drivers is crucial for effectively managing soil heavy metals (SHM). However, understanding the complex and diverse spatial drivers of SHM and their interactive effects remains a significant challenge. In this study, we present a comprehensive analysis framework that integrates Geodetector, CatBoost, and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) techniques to identify and elucidate the interactive effects of spatial drivers in SHM within the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of China. Our investigation incorporated fourteen environmental factors and focused on the pollution levels of three prominent heavy metals: Hg, Cd, and Zn. These findings provide several key insights: (1) The distribution of SHM is influenced by the combined effects of various individual factors and interactions within the source-flow-sink process. (2) Compared with the spatial interpretation of individual factors, the interaction between Hg and Cd exhibited enhanced spatial explanatory power. Similarly, interactions involving Zn mainly demonstrated increased spatial explanatory power, but there was one exception in which a weakening was observed. (3) Spatial heterogeneity plays a crucial role in determining the contributions of environmental factors to soil heavy metal concentrations. Although individual factors generally promote metal accumulation, their effects fluctuate when interactions are considered. (4) The SHAP interpretable method effectively addresses the limitations associated with machine-learning models by providing understandable insights into heavy metal pollution. This enables a comparison of the importance of environmental factors and elucidates their directional impacts, thereby aiding in the understanding of interaction mechanisms. The methods and findings presented in this study offer valuable insights into the spatial heterogeneity of heavy metal pollution in soil. By focusing on the effects of interactive factors, we aimed to develop more accurate strategies for managing SHM pollution.

Fractionation of metals in soil for strawberry cultivation: Effect on metal migration in food chain and application in risk assessment

Although trace metals in strawberry production system have attracted growing attention, little is known about metal fractionation in soil for strawberry cultivation. We hypothesized that the metal fractions in soil influenced by strawberry production had significant effect on food chain transport of metals and their risk in soil. Here, samples of strawberries and soil were gathered in the Yangtze River Delta, China to verify the hypothesis. Results showed that the acid-soluble Cr, Cd, and Ni in soil for strawberry cultivation were 21.5%-88.3% higher than those in open field soil, which enhanced uptake and bioaccessible levels of these metals in strawberries. Overall, the ecological, mobility, and health risks of Pb, Zn, Ni, and Cu in soil were at a low level. However, the ecological risk of bioavailable Cd, mobility risk of Cd, and cancer risk of bioavailable Cr in over 70% of the soil samples were at moderate, high, and acceptable levels, respectively. Since the increased acid-soluble Cr and Ni in soil were related to soil acidification induced by strawberry production, nitrogen fertilizer application should be optimized to prevent soil acidification and reduce transfer of Cr and Ni. Additionally, as Cd and organic matter accumulated in soil, the acid-soluble Cd and the ecological and mobility risks of Cd in soil were enhanced. To decrease transfer and risk of Cd in soil, organic fertilizer application should be optimized to mitigate Cd accumulation, alter organic matter composition, and subsequently promote the transformation of bioavailable Cd into residual Cd in soil.

Transfer of heavy metals from soil to vegetables: A comparative assessment of different irrigation water sources

This study aimed to assess the transfer factor (TF) of heavy metals (HMs) from soil to commonly consumed vegetables irrigated with different water sources. The field study covered 36 m2 of agricultural land in Kermanshah province, Iran, divided into nine equal-sized plots. Coriander, basil, and radish were the three types of vegetables cultivated and subjected to irrigation over two months, utilizing three different water sources: treated wastewater effluent (TWE), river water (RW), and well water + nitrogen fertilizer (WWF). After the irrigation and harvesting stages, soil samples from the cultivation area and harvested vegetables were collected. These samples underwent analysis using the ICP-OES method to assess HM levels and subsequent calculation of the TF of HMs from soil to plants. The results revealed that the TF levels indicated plants' relatively weak response (TF < 1) to the absorption of HMs. For non-toxic elements (Mn, Fe, Zn, Cu, Ni), TF values were generally higher than those for toxic elements (Cd, As, Pb) across all three vegetable types and irrigation treatments. The study's findings suggest that the TF of HMs in the studied vegetables varied based on the irrigation source and vegetable type. Various factors, including the type of irrigation source and vegetable, influenced the TF of HMs, each having different impacts on the transfer rate of each HM. The study highlights the importance of monitoring irrigation water and soil quality to prevent the accumulation of HMs in cultivated vegetables, thereby mitigating potential risks to human health.

Driving factors for distribution and transformation of heavy metals speciation in a zinc smelting site

Heavy metal pollution at an abandoned smelter pose a significant risk to environmental health. However, remediation strategies are constrained by inadequate knowledge of the polymetallic distribution, speciation patterns, and transformation factors at these sites. This study investigates the influence of soil minerals, heavy metal occurrence forms, and environmental factors on heavy metal migration behaviors and speciation transformations. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the minerals associated with heavy metals are mainly hematite, franklinite, sphalerite, and galena. Sequential extraction results suggest that lead and zinc are primarily present in the organic-sulfide fractions (F4) and residual form (F5) in the soil, accounting for over 70% of the total heavy metal content. Zinc displayed greater instability in carbonate-bound (16%) and exchangeable (2%) forms. The migration and diffusion patterns of heavy metals in the subsurface environment were visualized through the simulation of labile state heavy metals, demonstrating high congruence with groundwater pollution distribution patterns. The key environmental factors influencing heavy metal stable states (F4 and F5) were assessed by integrating random forest models and redundancy analysis. Primary factors facilitating Pb transformation into stable states were available phosphorus, clay content, depth, and soil organic matter. For Zn, the principal drivers were Mn oxides, soil organic matter, clay content, and inorganic sulfur ions. These findings enhance understanding of the distribution and transformation of heavy metal speciation and can provide valuable insights into controlling heavy metal pollution at non-ferrous smelting sites.

The environmental risk threshold (HC5) for Cd remediation in Chinese agricultural soils

Given the increasing concern over Cd contamination of agricultural soils in China, reducing the availability of the toxic metal has become an important remedial strategy. However, the lack of a unified evaluation framework complicates the assessment of remediation efficiency of different practices. Here, we evaluated the general extraction method (GEM) of available Cd in nine typical soil types by comparing extraction agents, including CaCl2, EDTA, Mehlich-Ⅲ, HCl and DTPA. The safe grain concentration of different agricultural products from National Food Safety Standards Limits of Contaminants in Food (GB 2762-2022) was then applied to understand soil limited available Cd concentration based on dose-response curves. We also derived environmental risk threshold (HC5) values for Cd remediation in agricultural soils by constructing species sensitivity distribution (SSD) curves. The results showed that Mehlich-Ⅲ best predicted Cd accumulation in crops (with 76.5% of explanation of grain Cd) and was selected as the GEM of soil available Cd for subsequent analyses. The regression coefficient (R2) of dose-response curves fitting between Cd absorption in crop tissues and soil available Cd extracted by GEM based on 30 different crop species varied from 51.0% to 79.5%, and the derived limit concentration of soil available Cd based on standard GB 2762-2022 was 0.18-0.76 mg‧kg-1. An HC5 of 0.19 mg‧kg-1 was then calculated, meaning that a concentration of available Cd in agricultural soil below 0.19 mg‧kg-1 ensures that 95% of agricultural products meet the quality and safety requirements of standard GB 2762-2022. The prediction model was well verified in the field test, indicating that can correctly estimate the soil available Cd based on the content of Cd in plant. This study provides a robust scientific framework for deriving the risk threshold for Cd remediation in agricultural soils and could be quite useful for establishing soil remediation standards.

Controlling factors of heavy metal(loid) accumulation in rice: Main and interactive effects

Identifying the key determinants of heavy metal(loid) accumulation in rice and quantifying their contributions are critical for precise prediction of heavy metal(loid) concentrations in rice and the formulation of effective pollution control strategies. The accumulation of heavy metal(loid)s in rice can be influenced by both natural and anthropogenic factors, which may interact with each other. However, distinguishing the independent roles (main effects) from interactive effects and quantifying their impacts separately pose challenges. To address this knowledge gap, we employed TreeExplainer-based SHAP and random forest algorithms in this study to quantitatively estimate the primary influencing factors and their main and interactive effects on heavy metal(loid)s in rice. Our findings reveal that soil cadmium (SCd) and rice cultivation time (C_TIME) were the primary contributors to rice cadmium (RCd) and rice arsenic (RAs), respectively. Soil lead (SPb) and sampling distances from roads significantly contributed to rice lead (RPb). Additionally, we identified significant interactive effects of SCd and C_TIME, C_TIME and RCd, and RCd and rice variety on RCd, RAs, and RPb, respectively, emphasizing their significance. These insights are pivotal in improving the accuracy of heavy metal(loid) concentration predictions in rice and offering theoretical guidance for the formulation of pollution control measures.

The Easily Overlooked Effect of Global Warming: Diffusion of Heavy Metals

Since industrialization, global temperatures have continued to rise. Human activities have resulted in heavy metals being freed from their original, fixed locations. Because of global warming, glaciers are melting, carbon dioxide concentrations are increasing, weather patterns are shifting, and various environmental forces are at play, resulting in the movement of heavy metals and alteration of their forms. In this general context, the impact of heavy metals on ecosystems and organisms has changed accordingly. For most ecosystems, the levels of heavy metals are on the rise, and this rise can have a negative impact on the ecosystem as a whole. Numerous studies have been conducted to analyze the combined impacts of climate change and heavy metals. However, the summary of the current studies is not perfect. Therefore, this review discusses how heavy metals affect ecosystems during the process of climate change from multiple perspectives, providing some references for addressing the impact of climate warming on environmental heavy metals.

Impact of meteorological factors on Cd availability and average concentration prediction in rice growth cycle

During the rice growth cycle, the average available cadmium concentration (CA-Cd) in the soil determines the Cd content in rice plant. Given defined soil properties and rice varieties, the meteorological factors play a crucial role in soil's available cadmium concentration (CCd) during the rice growth cycle. Thus, it is significant to investigate the influence of meteorological factors in CCd during the rice growth cycle and develop a predictive model for CA-Cd. The rice was cultivated under seven different sowing dates in Cd and As-contaminated soil in Hunan Province. Studied the impact of meteorological factors on paddy soil. The results showed that accumulated temperature (AT) and total precipitation (TP) were key factors affecting the soil CCd. The correlation coefficients between AT and TP with soil CA-Cd were 0.98 and -0.94 (p < 0.01), respectively. However, there was no significant correlation with CAs. AT mainly influenced the CCd during the grouting and maturity stages. A straightforward empirical prediction model was developed, capable of accurately forecasting CA-Cd during the rice growth cycle by considering meteorological factors and the initial soil CCd. This study supported a novel foundation for the precise prediction of Cd content in rice.

Assessment of elemental chemistry, spatial distribution, and potential risks of road-deposited dusts in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates

Road dust is a major source of pollution in the environment, carrying different pollutants, including heavy metals and metalloids, from one location to another. This study assesses the concentrations of eight heavy metals and one metalloid (Zn, Pb, Mn, Fe, Cr, Cu, Cd, Ni, and As) in dust samples collected from sixty-eight streets of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates using ICP-OES, as well as investigates their effects on both the environment and humans. Mean concentrations of the elements in μg/g across the sites were 392 ± 46 (Zn), 68.28 ± 11.3 (Pb), 1437 ± 67 (Mn), 39,481 ± 4611 (Fe), 460 ± 31 (Cr), 150 ± 44 (Cu), 1.25 ± 0.65 (Cd), 856 ± 72 (Ni), and 0.97 ± 0.28 (As). The Cdeg and ERI calculated from the study were 54.79 and 573, respectively, suggesting varying pollution levels. The highest contributions were from Ni, Cd, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Pb, especially in areas with heavy traffic. The non-carcinogenic risk assessments were generally low for the three routes of exposure, except HQoral that was slightly higher for children. Similarly, none of the elements exhibited any carcinogenic risk except chromium. Overall, the cancer risk is considered low. In view of the limited studies from UAE in relation to the metal content of road-deposited dusts, the current study serves as novel knowledge, especially in the context of geographical areas with a higher occurrence of sandstorms and the presence of particulate matter. The study also adds to the global understanding of the contribution of street dust to environmental pollution and its implications for human health.

Pollution indices of selected metals in tea (Camellia sinensis L.) growing soils of the Upper Assam region divulge a non-trifling menace of National Highway

The study investigated the influence of a National Highway (NH) traversing tea estates (TEs) on heavy metal (HM) contamination in the top soils of Upper Assam, India. The dispersion and accumulation of six HMs, viz. cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn), within tea-growing soils were assessed using diverse indices: contamination factor (CF), degree of contamination (DC), enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), modified degree of contamination (MDC), Nemerow pollution index (PINemerow), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk factor (Eri), and potential ecological risk index (RI). The order of HM prevalence was Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Cd. Elevated Cd levels near the NH prompted immediate attention, while Cd and Zn showed moderate pollution in CF, EF, and RI. The remaining metals posed minimal individual risk (Eri< 40), resulting in an overall contamination range of "nil to shallow," signifying slight contamination from the studied metals. From MDC values for investigated metals, it was found to be "zero to very low degree of contamination" at all locations except the vicinity of NH. Soil pollution, as determined by PLI, indicated unpolluted soils in both districts, yet PINemerow values indicated slight pollution. The statistical analysis revealed that there is a significant decrease in most of the indices of HM as the distance from NH increases. The application of multivariate statistical techniques namely Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis showed the presence of three distinct homogenous groups of distances based on different indices. This investigation underscores NH-associated anthropogenic effects on TE soil quality due to HM deposition, warranting proactive mitigation measures.

Predictive modeling of methylmercury in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and species-sensitivity-distribution-based derivation of the threshold of soil mercury in karst mountain areas

The bioavailable mercury (Hg) in the soil is highly active and can affect the formulation of methyl-Hg (MeHg) in soil and its accumulation in rice. Herein, we predicted the concentration of MeHg in rice using bioavailable Hg extracted from soils; additionally, we determined the threshold value of soil Hg in karst mountain areas based on species sensitivity distribution. The bioavailable Hg was extracted using calcium chloride, hydrochloric acid (HCl), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid mixture, ammonium acetate, and thioglycolic acid. Results showed that HCl is the best extractant, and the prediction model demonstrated good predictability of the MeHg concentration in rice based on the HCl-extractable Hg, pH, and soil organic matter (SOM) data. Compared with the actual MeHg concentration in rice, approximately 99% of the predicted values (n = 103) were within the 95% prediction range, indicating the good performance of the rice MeHg prediction model based on soil pH, SOM, and bioavailable Hg in karst mountain areas. Based on this MeHg prediction model, the safety threshold of soil Hg was calculated to be 0.0936 mg/kg, which is much lower than the soil pollution risk screening value of agricultural land (0.5 mg/kg), suggesting that a stricter standard should be applied regarding soil Hg in karst mountain areas. This study presents the threshold of soil Hg pollution for rice safety in karst mountain areas, and future studies should target this threshold range.

Effects of elevation and geomorphology on cadmium, lead and chromium enrichment in paddy soil and rice: A case study in the Xiangtan basin of China

The distributions of heavy metals in paddy fields and rice along river valleys were studied to explore the key factors affecting the accumulation of heavy metals in the upstream terraces and downstream plains. Results from 975 sampling sites showed that elevation, growing season and soil organic matter (OM) had significant effects on the content of Cd and Pb in topsoil and rice. The content of Cd (0.47-0.66 mg kg-1) and Pb (49.9-68.6 mg kg-1) in paddy fields with low elevation (30-60 m) in the downstream plains was significantly higher than the content of Cd (0.29-0.38 mg kg-1) and Pb (43.9-56.3 mg kg-1) in the upstream terraces with high altitude (60-90 m). In the double-rice production area, late rice generally produced grains with higher Cd and Pb content than early rice. Soil Cd was positively increased with the content of OM, especially in the downstream plains. When elevation was used for principal component analysis, plains with low elevation were grouped together with high content of total and soluble Cd, OM and Pb in soil, as well as high content of Cd and Pb in late rice. Altitude is one of the key factors affecting Cd content in rice. Although content of Cr (93.7-138.0 mg kg-1) was significantly higher than that of Cd and Pb in soil, content of Cr was lower than that of Cd in rice. These results indicate that paddy fields with elevation of 30-60 m in the downstream plains had high risk to produce late rice with Cd and Pb content exceeding the food safety standard 0.2 mg kg-1, which may be resulted from the driving force of runoff on soil soluble Cd and Pb from terraces to alluvial plains in river valleys.

Uncovering the impact of mega-scale shipbreaking yards on soil and crop quality in Bangladesh: A spatiotemporal dynamics and associated health risks of metal/loid contamination

The uncontrolled release of harmful metal/loids from mega-scale shipbreaking activities in Bangladesh is a significant concern. This study investigated the impact of shipbreaking activities on soil and crop quality and human health in relation to metal/loid contamination. This work covered an area of 1221 km2 surrounding the shipbreaking yards in Chittagong during the wet and dry seasons between 2019 and 2020. Amongst the sixteen elements measured, the concentrations of Pb, Cd, As, V, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, Fe, Co, Ni, and Sn in the soil, rice, and vegetables from the four exposure sites were significantly higher compared to the control site in both seasons. Soil pollution indices indicated moderate to higher contamination levels of Pb, Zn, Cd, As, and Se in 30-50% of soil, supporting their accumulation in food crops. Source apportionment analysis identified uncontrolled shipwrecking operations as the primary anthropogenic activity mainly contributing to metal/loid pollution. Health risk analysis showed inorganic arsenic (estimated), Cd, and Pb in food crops could pose potential health threats to the general population. Spinach leaf and gourd were identified as the highest-risk contributing vegetables in the dry and wet seasons. These findings help to inform management strategies to protect agroecosystems and public health.

Accumulation of livestock manure-derived heavy metals in the Hexi Corridor oasis agricultural alkaline soil and bioavailability to Chinese cabbage (Brassica pekinensis L.) after 4-year continuous application

Hexi Corridor is one of the most important base of vegetable producing areas in China. Livestock manure (LM) applied to agricultural field could lead to soil heavy metal (HM) pollution. Previous studies have focused on HM pollution following LM application in acidic polluted soils; however, fewer studies have been conducted in alkaline unpolluted soils. A 4-year field vegetable production experiment was conducted using pig manure (PM) and chicken manure (CM) at five application rates (0, 15, 30, 45, and 60 t ha-1) to elucidate potential risks of HMs in an alkaline unpolluted soil in the Hexi Corridor oasis agricultural area and HM uptake by Chinese cabbage. The results showed that LM application caused a significant build-up of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd, and Ni content in topsoil by 30.6-99.7%, 11.4-51.7%, 1.4-31.3%, 5.6-44.9%, 14%-40.8%, respectively. The Cd, Cu, Zn could potentially exceed the soil threshold in next 8-65 years after 15-60 t ha-1 LM application. Under LM treatment, the soil DTPA-extractable Cu, Zn, Fe, the acid-extractable fraction of Cu, Zn, Fe, Cd, Ni, and the Oxidable fraction of Cu, Zn, Fe, Mn, Cd, Ni significantly increased, but the DTPA-extractable Pb, Cd, the acid-extractable fraction of Pb, and the reducible fraction of Cd significantly decreased. Cu and Zn could migrate to the deeper soil and relatively increase in DTPA-extracted Cu, Zn were found in 20-40 cm soil depth after LM application. The pH and SOM could influence the bioavailability of HMs in soil. The bioaccumulation factor and transfer factor (TF) values were <1 except Mn (TF > 1). HMs in leaf did not approach the threshold for HM toxicity due to the "dilution effect". Recommend the type of manure was the PM and the annual PM application rate was 30 t ha-1 to ensure a 20-year period of clean production in alkaline unpolluted Fluvo-aqiuc vegetable soils.

Methylation of arsenic in rice: Mechanisms, factors, and mitigation strategies

Arsenic contamination in rice poses a significant health risk to rice consumers across the globe. This review examines the impact of water source and type on the speciation and methylation of arsenic in rice. The review highlights that groundwater used for irrigation in arsenic-affected regions can lead to higher total arsenic content in rice grains and lower proportions of methylated arsenic species. The methylation of As in rice is influenced by microbial activity in groundwater, which can methylate arsenic that is taken up by rice plants. Reclaimed water irrigation can also increase the risk of arsenic accumulation in rice crops, although the use of organic amendments and proper water management practices can reduce arsenic accumulation. Different water management regimes, such as continuous flooding irrigation, alternate wetting and drying, aerobic rice cultivation, and subsurface drip irrigation, can affect the speciation and methylation of As in rice. Continuous flooding irrigation reduces methylation of As due to anaerobic conditions, while alternate wetting and drying and aerobic rice cultivation promote methylation by creating aerobic conditions that stimulate the activity of arsenic-methylating microorganisms. Subsurface drip irrigation reduces total arsenic content in rice grains and increases the proportion of less toxic methylated arsenic species. The review also discusses the complex mechanisms of As-methylation and transport in rice, emphasizing the importance of understanding these mechanisms to develop strategies for reducing arsenic uptake in rice plants and mitigating health risks. The review addresses the impact of water source and type on arsenic speciation and methylation in rice and highlights the need for proper water management and treatment measures to ensure the safety of the food supply as well as aiding future research and policies to reduce health risks from rice consumption. The critical information gaps that this review addresses include the specific effects of different water management regimes on As-methylation, the role of microbial communities in groundwater in As-methylation, and the potential risks associated with the use of reclaimed water for irrigation.

A critical review on the migration and transformation processes of heavy metal contamination in lead-zinc tailings of China

The health risks of lead-zinc (Pb-Zn) tailings from heavy metal (HMs) contamination have been gaining increasing public concern. The dispersal of HMs from tailings poses a substantial threat to ecosystems. Therefore, studying the mechanisms of migration and transformation of HMs in Pb-Zn tailings has significant ecological and environmental significance. Initially, this study encapsulated the distribution and contamination status of Pb-Zn tailings in China. Subsequently, we comprehensively scrutinized the mechanisms governing the migration and transformation of HMs in the Pb-Zn tailings from a geochemical perspective. This examination reveals the intricate interplay between various biotic and abiotic constituents, including environmental factors (EFs), characteristic minerals, organic flotation reagents (OFRs), and microorganisms within Pb-Zn tailings interact through a series of physical, chemical, and biological processes, leading to the formation of complexes, chelates, and aggregates involving HMs and OFRs. These interactions ultimately influence the migration and transformation of HMs. Finally, we provide an overview of contaminant migration prediction and ecological remediation in Pb-Zn tailings. In this systematic review, we identify several forthcoming research imperatives and methodologies. Specifically, understanding the dynamic mechanisms underlying the migration and transformation of HMs is challenging. These challenges encompass an exploration of the weathering processes of characteristic minerals and their interactions with HMs, the complex interplay between HMs and OFRs in Pb-Zn tailings, the effects of microbial community succession during the storage and remediation of Pb-Zn tailings, and the importance of utilizing process-based models in predicting the fate of HMs, and the potential for microbial remediation of tailings.

The transformation of heavy metal speciation during rapid high-temperature aerobic fermentation of food waste and their potential mechanisms

In this study, the content changes of multiple trace heavy metals (HMs) in food waste using a new rapid high-temperature aerobic fermentation (RTAF) technology and their relationships with different physicochemical factors were researched. The results indicated that the content of HMs in the decomposed products met the industry standards for organic fertilizers (NY/T525-2021, China). Physicochemical factors played an important role in controlling the changes in HM content. The component evolution of dissolved organic matter was studied, and its influences on the transformation of HM speciation showed that the RTAF process converted proteins into humus-like substances. Redundancy analysis revealed that the main factors driving the speciation transformation of HMs were tyrosine-like substances or microbial-derived humus (C3), molecular weight of dissolved organic matter (SUVA254) and humification degree (E250/E365). The increase in humification degree contributed to passivating HMs. The correlation network analysis results showed that the exchangeable HMs (Exc-HMs) were related to Lactobacillus and Pediococcu. Additionally, the cytoskeleton, coenzyme transport and metabolic function of microorganisms affected the Exc-HM content. These research results can provide a scientific basis for the prevention and control of HM pollution during the treatment of food waste.

Potential functions of engineered nanomaterials in cadmium remediation in soil-plant system: A review

Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination is a global environmental issue facing agriculture. Under certain conditions, the stable Cd that bound to soil particles tend to be remobilized and absorbed into plants, which is seriously toxic to plant growth and threat food safety. Engineering nanomaterials (ENMs) has attracted increasing attentions in the remediation of Cd pollution in soil-plant system due to their excellent properties with nano-scale size. Herein, this article firstly systematically summarized Cd transformation in soil, transport in soil-plant system, and the toxic effects in plants, following which the functions of ENMs in these processes to remediate Cd pollution are comprehensively reviewed, including immobilization of Cd in soil, inhibition in Cd uptake, transport, and accumulation, as well as physiological detoxication to Cd stress. Finally, some issues to be further studied were raised to promote nano-remediation technology in the environment. This review provides a significant reference for the practical application of ENMs in remediation of Cd pollution in soil, and contributes to sustainable development of agriculture.

Exploring the mechanism of Cd uptake and translocation in rice: Future perspectives of rice safety

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice fields has been recognized as a severe global agro-environmental issue. To reach the goal of controlling Cd risk, we must pay more attention and obtain an in-depth understanding of the environmental behavior, uptake and translocation of Cd in soil-rice systems. However, to date, these aspects still lack sufficient exploration and summary. Here, we critically reviewed (i) the processes and transfer proteins of Cd uptake/transport in the soil-rice system, (ii) a series of soil and other environmental factors affecting the bioavailability of Cd in paddies, and (iii) the latest advances in regard to remediation strategies while producing rice. We propose that the correlation between the bioavailability of Cd and environmental factors must be further explored to develop low Cd accumulation and efficient remediation strategies in the future. Second, the mechanism of Cd uptake in rice mediated by elevated CO2 also needs to be given more attention. Meanwhile, more scientific planting methods (direct seeding and intercropping) and suitable rice with low Cd accumulation are important measures to ensure the safety of rice consumption. In addition, the relevant Cd efflux transporters in rice have yet to be revealed, which will promote molecular breeding techniques to address the current Cd-contaminated soil-rice system. The potential for efficient, durable, and low-cost soil remediation technologies and foliar amendments to limit Cd uptake by rice needs to be examined in the future. Conventional breeding procedures combined with molecular marker techniques for screening rice varieties with low Cd accumulation could be a more practical approach to select for desirable agronomic traits with low risk.

A high spatial resolution dataset for methylmercury exposure in Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area

Dietary methylmercury (MeHg) exposure increases the risk of many human diseases. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) is the world's most populous bay area and people there might suffer a high risk of dietary MeHg exposure. However, there lacks a time-series high spatial resolution dataset for dietary MeHg exposure in the GBA. This study constructs a high spatial resolution (1 km × 1 km) dataset for dietary MeHg exposure in the GBA during 2009-2019. It first constructs the dietary MeHg exposure inventory for each county/district of the GBA, based on MeHg concentrations of foods (i.e., rice and fish in this study) and per capita rice and fish intake. Subsequently, this study spatializes the dietary MeHg exposure inventory at 1 km × 1 km scale, using gridded data for food consumption expenditure as the proxy. This dataset can describe the spatially explicit hotspots, distribution patterns, and variation trend of dietary MeHg exposure in the GBA. This dataset can support spatially explicit evaluation of MeHg-related health risks in the GBA.

Cadmium accumulation in paddy soils affected by geological weathering and mining: Spatial distribution patterns, bioaccumulation prediction, and safe land usage

The abnormal enrichment of cadmium (Cd) in soil caused by rock weathering and mining activities is an issue in southern China. Although the soil Cd content in these regions is extremely high, the bioavailability of Cd in the soils differs significantly. The carbonate area (CBA) and tin-mining area (TIA) in Hezhou City were investigated to determine the primary features of soil Cd mobility in these regions and improve environmental management. Lateral and vertical spatial distributions revealed different accumulation and migration mechanisms of soil Cd in the CBA and TIA. Further analyses revealed that mining activities and geological weathering resulted in different soil geochemical parameters, thus yielding significantly lower levels of Cd in rice grains in the CBA than in the TIA. The random forest (RF) model predicted the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) (R2 = 0.69) better than the support vector machine (SVM) model (R2 = 0.68). Subsequently, a novel land management scheme was proposed based on soil Cd and the prediction of Cd in rice to optimize the spatial resources of agricultural land and ensure the safety of rice for consumption. This study provides a novel approach for land management in Cd-contaminated areas.

Source identification and health risk assessment of heavy metals with mineralogy: the case of soils from a Chinese industrial and mining city

Understanding the precise sources of heavy metals (HMs) in soil and the contribution of these sources to health risks has positive effects in terms of risk management. This study focused on the HMs in the soil of five land uses in an industrial and mining city. The sources of HMs in soils were identified, and the soil mineralogical characteristics and health risks of HMs were discussed. The results showed that the HMs (Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, Pb) found in the soil of the five land uses were affected by human activities. For example, the Cu in grassland, gobi beach, woodland, green belt, and farmland is 22.3, 3.5, 22.5, 16.7, and 21.3 times higher than the soil background values in Gansu Province, respectively. The Positive Matrix Factorization model (PMF) results revealed that traffic emissions and industrial and agricultural activities were the primary sources of HMs in the soil, with industrial sources accounting for the largest share at 55.79%. Furthermore, various characteristics proved that the studied HMs were closely related to smelting products. Concentration-oriented health risk assessments showed that HMs in the different soil types held non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for children and adults. Contamination source-oriented health risk assessments of children and adults found that industrial activities controlled non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. This study highlighted the critical effects of smelting on urban soil and the contribution of pollution sources to health risks. Furthermore, this work is significant in respect of the risk control of HMs in urban soils.

Accumulation, potential risk and source identification of toxic metal elements in soil: a case study of a coal-fired power plant in Western China

Coal-fired power plants (CPP) usually release massive numerous amounts of potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) into nearby ecosystems. There have been relatively few studies targeted on the ecological influences of PTMs related to the CPP in arid area. In this work, the distribution pattern, source apportionment and environmental risks of As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb and a couple of seldom monitored PTMs (Se, Zn, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn and Ni) in the soils near a coal electricity integration base were investigated in Hami, a city in northwestern China. Nemerow synthesis pollution index, geo-accumulation index and ecological risk index were used to assess pollution state of these PTMs in soils, and ordinary Kriging interpolation was used to analyze the spatial distribution for these elements. Methods of CA, PCA, CA and PAM were carried out for quantitative source analysis. The research outcome includes: (1) the contents of individual PTMs in most samples were greater than the background values, the pollution degrees of Se, Pb, Hg, Cd and As were significant, and some areas exceeded the warning threshold value; (2) the main sources of these PTMs were natural sources (35%), coal mine sewage (11%), atmospheric release during coal combustion (21%), dust generated from coal and combustion products (33%); (3) attention should be paid to the open-pit coal mines, shaft coal mines and ash dumps where the contents of metal elements were significantly polluted; and (4) wind is the main driving forces of PTMs migration in arid areas.

Review of visual analytics methods for food safety risks

With the availability of big data for food safety, more and more advanced data analysis methods are being applied to risk analysis and prewarning (RAPW). Visual analytics, which has emerged in recent years, integrates human and machine intelligence into the data analysis process in a visually interactive manner, helping researchers gain insights into large-scale data and providing new solutions for RAPW. This review presents the developments in visual analytics for food safety RAPW in the past decade. Firstly, the data sources, data characteristics, and analysis tasks in the food safety field are summarized. Then, data analysis methods for four types of analysis tasks: association analysis, risk assessment, risk prediction, and fraud identification, are reviewed. After that, the visualization and interaction techniques are reviewed for four types of characteristic data: multidimensional, hierarchical, associative, and spatial-temporal data. Finally, opportunities and challenges in this area are proposed, such as the visual analysis of multimodal food safety data, the application of artificial intelligence techniques in the visual analysis pipeline, etc.

Organic/inorganic phosphorus partition and transformation in long-term paddy cultivation in the Pearl River Delta, China

Identification and quantification of different soil phosphorus (P) fractions level are important for improving agricultural productivity and developing sustainable management practices in these agricultural soils under long-term cultivation. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate P fractions level and their transformation in these soils. This study was conducted to characterize P fractions as affected by different paddy cultivation ages (200, 400-yr and 900-yr) among soils of the Pearl River Delta Plain in China. A sequential chemical fractionation scheme and ³¹P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (³¹P NMR) were employed to quantify various P fractions and speciation. Results showed soil easily-labile P, moderately-labile P and non-labile P had a positive relationship with total P (TP) and available P (AP). Analysis with ³¹P NMR spectroscopy revealed that inorganic P including orthophosphate (Ortho-P) and pyrophosphate (Pyro-P) increased with cultivation age, while organic species monoester phosphate (Mono-P) and diester phosphate (Diester-P) decreased. Moreover, acid phosphatase (AcP), neutral phosphatase (NeP), exchangeable Ca and sand contents are the main factors that affected the transformation of soil P composition, and non-labile P (Dil.HCl-Pi) and Pyro-P had significant contribution to soil P availability by affecting P activation coefficient. Therefore, long-term paddy cultivation, influenced by these soil parameters including NeP, AcP, exchangeable Ca and sand, accelerated the transformation of soil organic P/non-labile P to inorganic P.

Safety of African grown rice: Comparative review of As, Cd, and Pb contamination in African rice and paddy fields

This review aimed to investigate the reported concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) in rice cultivated in Africa and African rice paddies compared to other regions. It also aimed to explore the factors influencing these concentrations and evaluate the associated health risks of elevated As, Cd, and Pb exposure. Relevant data were obtained from electronic databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar using specific keywords related to arsenic, cadmium, lead, rice, Africa, paddy, and grain. While the number of studies reporting the concentrations of As, Cd, and Pb in rice and rice paddies in Africa is relatively low compared to other regions, this review revealed that most of the African rice and paddy soils have low concentrations of these metals. However, some studies have reported elevated concentrations of As, Cd, and Pb in paddy fields, which is concerning due to the increased use of agrochemicals containing heavy metals in rice production. Nonetheless, agronomical interventions such as implementing alternate wetting and drying water management, cultivating cultivars with low accumulation of As, Cd, and Pb, amending rice fields with sorbents, and screening irrigation water can limit the bioaccumulation of these carcinogens in paddy fields using phytoremediation techniques. Therefore, we strongly urge African governments and organizations operating in Africa to enhance the capacity of rice farmers and extension officers in adopting approaches and practices that reduce the accumulation of these carcinogenic metals in rice. This is essential to achieve the sustainable development goal of providing safe food for all.

Deciphering endemic rhizosphere microbiome community's structure towards the host-derived heavy metals tolerance and plant growth promotion functions in serpentine geo-ecosystem

Environmental microbes in rhizosphere soil and surrounding plants have the potential to alter ecosystem functions. We investigated the microbial communities inhabiting the rhizosphere soils of both serpentine and non-serpentine rhizosphere zones to evaluate their heavy metal tolerance and ability to promote plant growth, utilizing 16S rRNA metabarcoding. The Biolog-EcoPlate technique was employed to determine how abiotic stress factors affect carbon utilization capacity by rhizospheric microbial communities in the serpentine geo-ecosystem. The phyla Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Nitrospirae colonized in the roots of Miscanthus sp., Biden sp., and Oryza sp. showed noticeable differences in different rhizosphere zones. The PICRUSt2-based analysis identified chromium/iron resistance genes (ceuE, chrA) and arsenic resistance genes (arsR, acr3, arsC) abundant in all the studied rhizosphere soils. Notably, nickel resistance genes (nikA, nikD, nikE, and nikR) from Arthrobacter, Microbacterium, and Streptomyces strongly correlate with functions related to solubilization of nickel and an increase in siderophore and IAA production. The abundance of Arthrobacter, Clostridium, Geobacter, Dechloromonas, Pseudomonas, and Flavobacterium was positively correlated with chromium and nickel but negatively correlated with the calcium/magnesium ratio. Our results contribute to a better understanding of the functions of plant-tolerant PGPR interaction in the heavy metal-contaminated rhizosphere and eco-physiological responses from long-term biological weathering.

Evaluation of heavy metals contamination in cereals, vegetables and fruits with probabilistic health hazard in a highly polluted megacity

Heavy metals (HMs) contamination in foodstuffs could pose serious health issues for public health and humans are continually exposed to HMs through the consumption of cereals, fruits, and vegetables. The present study was conducted to assess 11 HMs in foodstuffs to investigate pollution levels and health risks to children and adults. The mean contents of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe, Pb, Co, As, Mn and Ba in foodstuffs were 0.69, 2.73, 10.56, 6.60, 14.50, 9.63, 2.75, 0.50, 0.94, 15.39 and 0.43 mg/kg, respectively and the concentration of Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni and Pb were higher than maximum permissible concentrations (MPCs) showing that these foods may be contaminated with metals and constitute a danger to consumers. Vegetables had relatively higher metal contents followed by cereals and fruits. The average value of the Nemerrow composite pollution index (NCPI) for cereals, fruits, and vegetables were 3.99, 6.53, and 11.34, respectively indicating cereal and fruits were moderately contaminated whereas vegetables were heavily contaminated by the studied metals. The total estimated daily and weekly intakes for all studied metals were higher than the maximum tolerable daily intake (MTDI) and provisional tolerance weekly intake (PTWI) recommended by FAO/WHO. The target hazard quotients and hazard index of all studied metals exceeded the standard limit for adults and children suggesting significant non-carcinogenic health hazards. The total cancer risk value of Cd, Cr, Ni, Pb, and As from food intake exceeded the threshold range (1.0E-04), suggesting potential carcinogenic risks. Based on practical and sensible evaluation techniques, the current work will assist policymakers in controlling metal contamination in foodstuffs.

Rapid identification of high and low cadmium (Cd) accumulating rice cultivars using machine learning models with molecular markers and soil Cd levels as input data

Excessive accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in rice grains threatens food safety and human health. Growing low Cd accumulating rice cultivars is an effective approach to produce low-Cd rice. However, field screening of low-Cd rice cultivars is laborious, time-consuming, and subjected to the influence of environment × genotype interactions. In the present study, we investigated whether machine learning-based methods incorporating genotype and soil Cd concentration can identify high and low-Cd accumulating rice cultivars. One hundred and sixty-seven locally adapted high-yielding rice cultivars were grown in three fields with different soil Cd levels and genotyped using four molecular markers related to grain Cd accumulation. We identified sixteen cultivars as stable low-Cd accumulators with grain Cd concentrations below the 0.2 mg kg^-1 food safety limit in all three paddy fields. In addition, we developed eight machine learning-based models to predict low- and high-Cd accumulating rice cultivars with genotypes and soil Cd levels as input data. The optimized model classifies low- or high-Cd cultivars (i.e., the grain Cd concentration below or above 0.2 mg kg^-1) with an overall accuracy of 76%. These results indicate that machine learning-based classification models constructed with molecular markers and soil Cd levels can quickly and accurately identify the high- and low-Cd accumulating rice cultivars.

Prediction of cadmium bioavailability in the rice-soil system on a county scale based on the multi-surface speciation model

Relative to total cadmium (Cd) content, bioavailable Cd in paddy soil is regarded as a more reasonable indicator for the risk of Cd bioaccumulation in rice. However, there is still a lack of approach to accurately predict the content of bioavailable Cd in paddy soil due to its heterogeneity and complexity. Here, multi-surface speciation model (MSM) was employed to predict the bioavailable Cd and Cd immobilization effect. Moreover, a precise remediation strategy was designed based on screening and scenario simulation of the sensitive factors with MSM. The results demonstrated that MSM can well predict Cd bioaccumulation risk in rice. The contribution of pH to Cd bioavailability was quantified under three analysis scenarios, accounting for 87.51% of the total variance of bioavailable Cd. In addition, the pH alert value (6.31 ± 0.52) for Cd risk was acquired for each rice field on a county scale. A precise map for the application amount of lime materials was constructed by taking CaCO₃ (3.38-15.75 t ha^-1) as a recommended economical and green immobilization agent. This study provides a potentially effective approach for risk assessment of Cd contamination in rice and important reference for precise Cd remediation in paddy soil.

Uptake of heavy metals by crops near a mining field: Pathways from roots and leaves

Metal uptake and distribution in crops have been demonstrated to be highly variable and depending on the metal of interest and the crop type. However, no consensus is reached regarding the primary factor controlling metal uptake in crops. This study thus comparably investigated Hg, As, Zn, Pb, Cd and Cu uptake and distribution in three crops grown in a watershed near a copper mining field located in Yunnan, Southwestern China. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) were statistically compared for the same metal across different crops. Leafy crops had a stronger propensity to accumulate Hg, As and Zn than fruit crops. The ability of grain crops to accumulate Cd and Cu was much lower than leafy and fruit crops. The three crops all tended not to accumulate Pb in their edible tissues. The DTPA extracted metal concentrations were not statistically correlated with the metal concentrations in crop edible tissues. It is thus not practical to predict metal uptake of Hg, As, Pb and Zn through their available concentrations in soils. The contents of nitrogen and phosphorus, and competing metal ions present in paddy soil decreased the accumulation of Cu and Cd in rice grains. By means of hierarchical cluster analysis, the high accumulation of Zn in the edible tissues of fruit and grain crops was mainly due to dust inputs via phloem transport from leaves. This is why BCF(Zn) was the highest among the six metals for these two crops. For leafy crops, the accumulation of Hg, Cd and Zn in leaves was mainly through soil inputs by roots. Our findings serve as a scientific basis for the selection of crops in areas with high background of heavy metals.

Human health risks associated with metals in paddy plant (Oryza sativa) based on target hazard quotient and target cancer risk

Paddy plants (Oryza sativa) contaminated with metals could be detrimental to human health if the concentrations of metals exceed the permissible limit. Thus, this study aims to assess the risk of the concentrations of As, Se, Cu, Cr, Co, and Ni and their distributions in various parts (roots, stems, leaves, and grains) of paddy plants collected from Sekinchan, Malaysia. Both soil and plant samples were digested according to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) Method 3050B and the metal concentrations were determined by the Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The highest mean translocation factor (TF) was from soil to roots (TF roots/soil ranged from 0.12 to 6.15) and the lowest was from leaves to grain (TF grain/leaves ranged from 0.06 to 0.87). Meanwhile, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) for all metals was less than 1.0 indicating that paddy plants only absorb metals from the soil but do not accumulate in the grains. The average daily intake for As (1.15 ± 0.25 µg/kg/day) has exceeded the limit proposed by ATSDR and IRIS USEPA (0.30 µg/kg/day). Target cancer risk (TR) of 1.10 × 10^-3 for As through rice consumption indicates that the potential cancer risk exists in one out of 1000 exposed individuals. The results from this study could serve as a reference for researchers and policymakers to monitor and formulate strategies in managing As and other metals in paddy plants, especially in Southeast Asian countries.

Interactions and quantification of multiple influencing factors on cadmium accumulation in soil-rice systems at a large region

The accumulation of Cd in soil-rice systems at a large region is often extremely complicated due to environmental heterogeneity and the interactions of multiple influencing factors. However, the interactive effects and quantification of the contributions of influencing factors on Cd accumulation in large regions remain unclear. In this study, conditional inference trees and random forest analysis were used to identify the interactions of various factors (soil properties, topography and demographic-economic), and quantify their contributions to Cd accumulation in soil-rice systems of Sichuan-Chongqing region, China. The results showed that Cd content in the soil was the most significant influencing factor on Cd accumulation in soil-rice systems, especially bioavailable Cd in soil contributed to 35.73 % and 54.78 % for soil total Cd (Cd_soil) and brown rice Cd (Cd_rice), respectively. Population density (PD) and elevation contributed 31.16 % and 27.40 % to Cd_soil content, respectively, and their interaction promoted the increase in Cd_soil content. Moreover, PD played a leading role in Cd_soil content when the elevation exceeded 324 m. The relative importances of slope and elevation for Cd_rice content were 16.81 % and 8.49 %, respectively, and their interaction facilitated the increment of Cd_rice content. As soil pH, gross domestic product (GDP) and slope decreased, the interaction of soil pH with GDP led to the increase of bioavailability factor (BAF), and that with slope enhanced the bioaccumulation factor (BCF). In addition, soil pH, PD and elevation were of considerable importance for the migration and transformation of Cd, with contributions of 22.11 %, 12.90 % and 12.52 % to BAF, and 5.05 %, 5.62 % and 5.50 % to BCF, respectively. This study is hopeful to provide a scientific insight into the prevention and control of Cd contamination in soil-rice systems at a large region.

Heavy metal transportation from polluted water into human through fodder plants and farmed animals

Herein we have determined the heavy metals concentrations (Pb, Cd, and Ni) estimated in River Swat water, irregated soils samples, fodder plant’s parts, farmed animal milk/meat samples and human blood from two location Mingora and Barikot in District Swat, Pakistan, using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, and Ni were found 0.016 ± 0.008, 0.50 ± 0.03, and 0.022 ± 0.004 mg/L in Mingora drain water, respectively, while in the Barikot sample the aforementioned metal were in the range of 0.014 ± 0.01, 0.29 ± 0.02, and 0.108 ± 0.08 mg/L. In the field water samples of Mingora the Cd, Pb and Ni were detected in the range of 0.008 ± 0.001, 0.65 ± 0.05 and 0.032 ± 0.006 mg/L, respectively, while in the field water samples of Barikot contained Cd = 0.016 ± 0.007 mg/L, Pb = 0.48 ± 0.04 mg/L and Ni = 0.043 ± 0.003 mg/L. Drain soil of Mingora contained the highest concentrations of heavy metals, with Cd = 3.9 ± 0.62 mg/kg, Pb = 45.5 ± 3.2 mg/kg, and Ni = 19.95 ± 2.1 mg/kg, whereas field soil contained Cd = 1.6 ± 0.44 mg/kg, Pb = 54.5 ± 2.26 mg/kg, and Ni = 34.75 ± 3.2 mg/kg. Cd in the Barikot drain soil was 3.95 ± 0.71 mg/kg, while it was 0.8 ± 0.06 mg/kg in the field soil. Lead in the same drain sample was 33 ± 3.23 mg/kg, while it was 72 ± 4.15 mg/kg in the field sample. Ni concentrations in Barikot drain soil samples was 13.85 ± 1.1 mg/kg, while 6.9 ± 0.8 mg/kg was detected in field samples. From the results it can be concluded that appreciable concentrations of heavy metals are present in milk and meat samples of farmed animals whereas significant quantities are also there in human blood samples indicating the transport of the selected metals from water through fodder plants into human. However, it may not be the sole reason heavy metal contaminations in human blood other factors like inhalation etc. may also be equally responsible.

Polyethylene and poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)-based biodegradable microplastics modulate the bioavailability and speciation of Cd and As in soil: Insights into transformation mechanisms

Microplastics (MPs) that enter the soil can alter the physicochemical and biochemical properties of soil and affect speciation of heavy metals (HMs), thereby perturbing the bioavailability of HMs. However, the mechanisms underlying these effects are not understood. Therefore, we investigated the effects of MPs from poly (butyleneadipate-co-terephthalate)-based biodegradable mulch (BM) and polyethylene mulch (PM) in Cd- or As-contaminated soil on soil properties and speciation of HMs. MPs were characterised using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The addition of MPs reduced the bioavailability of HMs in soil and promoted the transformation of HMs into inert fractions. The mechanisms underlying the reduction of the bioavailability of HMs in soils could be as follows: (1) the entry of MPs into the soil changed its properties, which reduced the bioavailability of HMs; (2) FTIR and XPS analyses revealed that the hydroxyl and carboxyl groups and benzene ring present on the surface of aged MPs stabilized complexes (As(V)-O) with As(V) may have directly reduced the bioavailability of As(V) in soil; (3) aged BM exposed more amounts and types of reactive functional groups and was more effective in stabilising soil HMs than PM. Overall, this study provides new insights regarding the complexation mechanisms of soil HMs by MPs from different plastic mulch sources.

Polyaspartic acid assisted-phytoremediation of cadmium-contaminated farmland: Phytoextraction efficiency, soil quality, and rhizosphere microbial community

Cadmium is highly toxic and one of the most dangerous metal pollutants in soil, and poses a serious threat to human health through soil-crop-food chain transmission. Polyaspartic acid (PASP) is a biodegradable additive that is environment-friendly compared to traditional chelating agents. Current studies have explored its effect on auxiliary phytoextraction at a laboratory scale; however, the method is still rarely reported at the field scale. Therefore, this study used two ecotypes of Pennisetum sinese in a field experiment for 3 years in Jiaoxi Township, Liuyang City, Hunan Province, China, to understand the effect of PASP on the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soil and soil quality through long-term field studies. Moreover, because the soil microbial community responds well to the phytoremediation effect of heavy metal (including Cd)-contaminated soil, the changes in rhizosphere soil microbial community diversity and composition were analyzed. After 2 years of PASP-enhanced phytoremediation, the PASP application increased the total Cd reduction in soil by 237 % and 255 %, and the soil DTPA-extractable Cd content decreased to 0.092 and 0.087 mg kg^-1. When the application of PASP ceased in the third year, the two ecotypes of P. sinese obtained after harvest could achieve feed safety. Our study showed that the application of PASP could significantly increase the Cd extraction capacity and shoot biomass of P. sinese, and maintain soil health by optimizing the composition and structure of rhizosphere bacterial communities. The rhizosphere bacterial community structure was improved and dominated by Acidobacteriota, Proteobacteria, and Chloroflexi at the phylum level, and the increased abundance of Acetobacter, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, and Stenotrophomonas at the genus level may promote heavy metal detoxification in soil, plant growth, and phytoremediation. Long-term field monitoring demonstrated that the low-cost and eco-friendly features of PASP made it a good candidate for enhancing phytoextraction efficiency and regulating soil microbial communities for remediation.

The changes in the physicochemical properties of calcareous soils and the factors of arsenic (As) uptake by wheat were investigated after the cessation of effluent irrigation for nearly 20 years

It is not known what the buffering capacity of soils and arsenic (As) enrichment by crops is for calcareous agricultural soils after the end of long-term effluent irrigation. In this study, changes in soil physicochemical properties and factors of influencing As uptake by wheat were investigated in agricultural soils where sewage irrigation had been ceased for nearly 20 years. The results showed that the content of CaCO₃ and pH in soil increased compared to the period before the cessation of sewage irrigation, but remained below the soil background value. Furthermore, CaCO₃ is by far the main buffering substance in agricultural soils and indirectly contributes to the increase in pH. The As concentration in the soil was 36.4 ± 34.8 mg/kg, which was 0.56-10.28 times and 0.28-5.18 times higher than the soil background and risk screening values, respectively, but showed a decreasing trend. pH and Fe dissolution were the main reasons for the lower As concentration in the soil. Total As in soil was a better predictor of As in wheat, and soil electrical conductivity (EC) and soil organic matter (SOM) promoted As uptake by wheat. The competitive uptake of As by dissolved Si was an important reason for the mismatch between As concentrations in soil and wheat. This study highlighted the key issues of As transport transformation in soil-wheat systems after cessation of effluent irrigation, using agricultural soils, and provided a reference for soil risk management in agricultural soils in mining areas.

Heavy metals accumulation in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) roots and shoots grown in calcareous soils treated with non-spiked and spiked sewage sludge

With growing urbanization and agriculture, the quantity of sewage sludge production increases every year. For the purpose of risk management, it is crucial to figure out how much heavy metals are transported to different parts of plants when sewage sludge is used. A greenhouse experiment was carried out to investigate the accumulation of heavy metals in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) grown in 30 calcareous soils. The soils in this study were subjected to three different treatments: soils treated with sewage sludge at a rate of 2.5%, soils treated with sewage sludge at a rate of 2.5% and enriched with heavy metals, and control soils that received neither sewage sludge nor heavy metals. Wheat grown in sewage sludge-treated soils had the highest mean dry matter, and was 2.11 and 1.25 times greater than wheat grown in control and spiked-sewage sludge-treated soils, respectively. In all treatments, wheat roots had greater heavy metal levels than wheat shoots. Among all the heavy metals examined, Pb and Cu had the highest bioconcentration factors for roots and shoots (BCF_Roots and BCF_Shoots) in control and sewage sludge-treated soils, followed by Cd in spiked-sewage sludge-treated soils, and Co and Ni had the lowest BCF_Roots and BCF_Shoots across all treatments. In spiked-sewage sludge-treated soils, the root restriction for heavy metals translocation was more important for Co, Cu, and Ni than for Pb and Zn, indicating that wheat can be grown safely in a variety of calcareous soils amended with sewage sludge with high content of Cd, Co, Cu, and Ni. Reducing the transfer of Pb and Zn from soils to wheat in soils treated with sewage sludge yet having high concentrations of these heavy metals should be considered as a top priority strategy for preserving wheat products. Since a wide range of calcareous soils was used in this study and because calcareous soils make up the majority of soils in the Middle East, the findings are relevant for all of the countries in this region.

Effects of microwave and plastic content on the sulfur migration during co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic

In order to reduce the risks of sulfur-containing contaminants present in biofuels, the effects of microwave and content of hydrogen donor on the cracking of C-S bonds and the migration of sulfur were studied by co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic. The synergistic mechanism of microwave and hydrogen donor was explored from the perspective of deducing the evolution of sulfur-containing compounds based on microwave thermogravimetric analysis. By combining temperature-weight curves, it was found that microwaves and hydrogen radicals promoted the cracking of sulfur-containing compounds and increased the mass loss of biomass during pyrolysis. The mixing ratio of hydrogen donor (plastic) was the key parameter resulting in the removal of sulfur from oil. By adjusting the mixing ratio, the yield of co-pyrolyzed oil was three times higher than that of cow dung pyrolysis alone and the relative removal rate of sulfur reached 73.67%. The relative content of sulfur in the oil was reduced by 73.77% due to the escape of sulfur-containing gases (H₂S, COS and C₂H₅SH) and the formation of sulfate crystals in the char. Microwave selectively heated sulfur-containing organics and hydrogen radicals stimulated the breaking of C-S bonds, which improved the cracking efficiency of the oil. This breaking will provide a theoretical and technological reference for the environmentally friendly treatment of biomass and biofuels.

A comprehensive framework for identifying contributing factors of soil trace metal pollution using Geodetector and spatial bivariate analysis

The accurate identification of pollution sources is important for controlling soil pollution. However, the widely used Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model generally relies on knowledge and experience to accurately identify pollution sources; thus, this method faces significant challenges in objectively identifying soil pollution sources. Herein, we established a comprehensive source analysis framework using factor identification and geospatial analysis, and revealed the factors contributing to trace metal(loid) (TM) pollution in soil in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China. Using the PMF model, we initially considered that the PRD may be affected by natural, atmospheric, traffic and industrial, and agricultural sources. Moreover, Geodetector model detected the relationship between TMs and 12 environmental variables based on the strong spatial "source-sink" relationship of pollutants. The parent material and digital elevation model were the key factors predicting the accumulation of Cr, Ni, and Cu. Industries and roads were the most important determinants of Pb, Zn, and Cd, whereas atmospheric deposition was more important for Hg accumulation. The accumulation of As was found to be closely related to agricultural activities such as the application of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The spatial autocorrelation between soil TM pollution and environmental variables further supports this hypothesis. Overall, the obtained results showed that proposed approach improved the accuracy of source apportionment and provided a basis for soil pollution control.

Assessing natural background levels of geogenic contaminants in groundwater of an urbanized delta through removal of groundwaters impacted by anthropogenic inputs: New insights into driving factors

Knowledge on driving forces controlling natural background levels (NBLs) of geogenic contaminants (GCs) in groundwater of coastal urbanized areas are still limited because of complex hydrogeological conditions and anthropogenic activities. This study assesses NBLs of two GCs including arsenic (As) and manganese (Mn) in four groundwater units of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) with large scale urbanization by using a preselection method composed of the chloride/bromide mass ratio versus chloride concentration and the oxidation capacity with the combination of Grubbs' test. More importantly, driving factors controlling NBLs of As/Mn in groundwater of the PRD are discussed. Results showed that groundwater As/Mn concentrations in residual datasets were independent of land-use types, while those in original datasets in different land-use types were distinct because of various human activities, indicating that the used preselection method in this study is valid for NBLs-As/Mn assessment in groundwater of the PRD. NBL-As in coastal-alluvial aquifers was >6 times that in other groundwater units. NBL-Mn in coastal-alluvial aquifers was 1.4 times that in alluvial-proluvial aquifers, and both were >4 times that in other two groundwater units. High NBLs-As/Mn in coastal-alluvial aquifers is mainly attributed to reduction of FeMn oxyhydr(oxides) induced by mineralization of organic matter in Quaternary sediments. Elevated pH also contributes higher NBL-As in coastal-alluvial aquifers. By contrast, higher NBL-Mn in alluvial-proluvial aquifers than in other two groundwater units mainly ascribes to reduction of FeMn oxyhydr(oxides) in Quaternary sediments triggered by irrigation of reducing river waters. In addition, more occurrence of As/Mn-rich sediments and the infiltration of As/Mn-rich river water are also important factors for high NBLs-As/Mn in coastal-alluvial aquifers. This study shows that revealing natural driving factors of GCs-rich groundwater in coastal urbanized areas on the basis of identification of contaminated groundwaters via the used preselection methods is acceptable.

Quantitative analysis of fertilizer using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy combined with random forest algorithm

Chemical fertilizers are important for effectively improving soil fertility, promoting crop growth, and increasing grain yield. Therefore, methods that can quickly and accurately measure the amount of fertilizer in the soil should be developed. In this study, 20 groups of soil samples were analyzed using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy, and partial least squares (PLS) and random forest (RF) models were established. The prediction performances of the models for the chemical fertilizer content and pH were analyzed as well. The experimental results showed that the R ² and root mean square error (RMSE) of the chemical fertilizer content in the soil obtained using the full-spectrum PLS model were .7852 and 2.2700 respectively. The predicted R ² for soil pH was .7290, and RMSE was .2364. At the same time, the full-spectrum RF model showed R ² of .9471 (an increase of 21%) and RMSE of .3021 (a decrease of 87%) for fertilizer content. R ² for the soil pH under the RF model was .9517 (an increase of 31%), whereas RMSE was .0298 (a decrease of 87%). Therefore, the RF model showed better prediction performance than the PLS model. The results of this study show that the combination of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy with RF algorithm is a feasible method for rapid determination of soil fertilizer content.

Synergy of Selenium and Silicon to Mitigate Abiotic Stresses: a Review

It is evident the increase in the occurrence of different stresses that impact agriculture and so there has been an increase in research to study stress mitigators including silicon (Si) and selenium (Se). However, the great challenge to be answered would be to assess whether it is possible to maximize these benefits by combining these two elements. Therefore, this review focused on discussing the feasibility of combining Se and Si in mitigating abiotic stresses and also measuring gains in yield and quality of agricultural products. These are the main challenges of plant mineral nutrition with these two elements for sustainable cultivation, ensuring food security with the possibility of improving human health. As the mode of application of an element can change absorption and assimilation processes and consequently the plant's response, it is important to consider research with supply of these elements via the foliar and root route. Thus, we highlighted the potential of the combined application of Se and Si and whether or not they are relevant to overcome the individual application in stress mitigation or even in plants without stress. In addition, we pointed out new directions for research on this topic in order to reinforce the combined use of stress relievers and their potential benefit to crop plants.

Dynamics of heavy metals during the development and decomposition of leaves of Avicennia marina and Kandelia obovata in a subtropical mangrove swamp

In mangrove wetlands, leaves make up a high proportion of the plant biomass and can accumulate heavy metals from contaminated sediment. Despite this, it is still unclear how heavy metal concentrations in leaves change as they develop and how metals in senescence leaves are recycled back into the mangrove ecosystems during decomposition. The present study aims to investigate the dynamics of six heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cd, and Pb) in leaves of two common mangrove plants, Avicennia marina and Kandelia obovata, at different stages of development (young, mature, and senescent) and leaf litter decomposition (from 0 to 20 weeks). Based on litterbag experiments in a subtropical mangrove swamp, both plant species showed similar trends in alternations of the six heavy metals during leaf development, that was, decreased in Cu and Zn but increased in Pb, while Cr, Ni, and Cd remained steady. All heavy metals in litter gradually increased in concentration during decomposition. By the end of the 20-weeks decomposition, the concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Cd in decayed leaves were comparable to those in sediment, with Cu, Zn, and Cd at approximately 18, 75, and 0.2 mg·kg^-1, respectively, while Cr (66 mg·kg^-1), Ni (65 mg·kg^-1), and Pb (55 mg·kg^-1) were lower than those in sediment, indicating that metals were not retained in litter but recycled back to the sediment. Tannins in mangrove leaf litter might chelate heavy metals, affecting their migration and transformation of heavy metals in estuarine mangrove wetlands. The findings of our study provide insight into the interactions between toxic heavy metals and mangrove plant species during leaf development, representing the first example of how most metals would be retained in leaf litter during decomposition, thereby reducing their release to estuarine and marine ecosystems.

Sources, transfers and the fate of heavy metals in soil-wheat systems: The case of lead (Pb)/zinc (Zn) smelting region

Heavy metals (HMs) from smelters pose severe challenges to the environmental soil quality of surrounding farmlands, and threaten human health through the food chain. This study explored the environmental effects of smelting activities on farmland soil, and additionally assessed the enrichment, transfer and health risk of HMs in soil-wheat systems. Multiple characterization results were combined to demonstrate that HMs from smelter waste were transferred to the surrounding soil. It was determined that the enrichment of HMs in soil-wheat systems is mainly controlled by the total HM concentration and pH in soil. Furthermore, the priority pollutant in soil-wheat systems was found to be Cd, and Cd affected the transfer of Cu, Mn and Pb from soil to wheat roots. Interestingly, the -OH stretching, C-H stretching, N-H amide and C-O bending were involved in detoxifying HMs in wheat. The mean values of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks by consuming wheat grain were 9.1, 1.4E-02 (adults) and 11.3, 3.3E-03 (children), respectively, indicating a noteworthy health risk. This study highlighted the critical issues arising from Pb/Zn smelting activities on agricultural soils. Notwithstanding, to ensure food security, the affected regions could opt to follow up on the type of crops grown.

Bioavailability, transfer, toxicological effects, and contamination assessment of arsenic and mercury in soil-corn systems

Sewage irrigation has solved the shortage of agricultural water and increased the content of heavy metal(loid)s (HMs) in soil-crop systems, which harms human health via the food chain. In this study, 43 pairs of soil and corn samples (leaf, stem1, stem2, stem3, root, husk, grain, and corncob) were collected in the Dongdagou (DDG) and Xidagou (XDG) streams of Baiyin City. Fraction and transfer of As and Hg were investigated, and toxicological effects and contamination were assessed in soil-corn systems. The results showed that the mean values of As and Hg in soil were 33.79 mg/kg and 0.96 mg/kg, respectively, which exceeded the soil background values in Gansu Province. As and Hg are mainly dominated by the residual fraction. Total and bioavailability contributed significantly to As and Hg accumulation in corn, with root, stem3, and leaf accumulating more strongly. The results based on the bioavailability concentration soil-corn transfer factor indicated that As and Hg tended to accumulate more in the root, stem3, and leaf and less in grain, and further assessment of the human health effects of consuming contaminated cron is needed. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) results showed that As and Hg were not significantly toxic to corn parts, indicating morphology. As and Hg were bound to hydroxyl groups in the outer epidermal cell wall of the roots, thereby reducing upward translocation. The trinity assessment (TA) model results indicated that the most severe contamination was found in root and stem1. The TA provides a practical tool for soil-cron systems and helps develop management strategies to prevent ecological hazards.

Human-induced pollution and toxicity of river sediment by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and accumulation in a paddy soil-rice system: A comprehensive watershed-scale assessment

This study aimed to assess pollution by potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in the Zarjoub and Goharroud river basins in northern Iran. Due to exposure to various types of pollution sources, these rivers are two of the most polluted rivers in Iran. They also play an important role in irrigation of paddy fields in the study area, increasing concerns about the contamination of rice grains by PTEs. Hence, we analyzed the concentrations of eight PTEs (i.e., As, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) at ten channel bed sediment sampling sites in each river, fifteen samples of paddy soils and fifteen co-located rice samples in the relevant watersheds. Results of the index-based assessment indicate moderate to heavy pollution and moderate toxicity for sediments in the Goharroud River, while both pollution and toxicity of the Zarjoub River sediment were characterized as moderate. Paddy soils in the watersheds were found to be moderate to heavily polluted by PTEs, but the values of the rice bioconcentration factor (RBCF) indicated intermediate absorption for Cu, Zn, and Mn, and weak and very weak absorption for Pb/Ni and As/Co/Cr, respectively. The concentration of Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cr was negatively correlated to the corresponding values of RBCF, highlighting the ability of rice grains to control bioaccumulation and regulate concentrations. Industrial/agricultural effluents, municipal wastewater, leachate of solid waste, traffic-related pollution, and weathering of parent materials were found to be responsible for pollution of the Zarjoub and Goharroud watersheds by PTEs. Mn, Cu, and Pb in rice grains might be responsible for non-carcinogenic diseases. Although weak absorption was observed for As and Cr in rice grains, the concentrations of these elements in rice grains indicate a high level of cancer risk if ingested. This study provides insights to control the pollution of sediment, paddy soils, and rice.

Effects of vegetation restoration on distribution characteristics of heavy metals in soil in Karst plateau area of Guizhou

In southwest China, vegetation restoration is widely used in karst rocky desertification control projects. This technology can effectively fix the easily lost soil, gradually restore the plant community and improve soil fertility. However, the change law of soil heavy metals in the restoration process remains to be further studied. Therefore, in this work, Guizhou Caohai Nature Reserve as a typical karst area was taken as the research object to investigate the influence of vegetation restoration technology on repairing soil heavy metal pollution. The spatial distribution characteristics of soil heavy metals (chromium, nickel, arsenic, zinc, lead) before and after vegetation restoration in karst area were studied by comparative analysis and linear stepwise regression analysis. The main influencing factors and spatial distribution characteristics of heavy metals in karst area were further discussed. The results showed that: (1) heavy metals in karst soils are affected by surface vegetation, root exudates, microorganisms and leaching. Only heavy metals nickel (Ni) and lead (Pb) showed the tendency of surface enrichment and bottom precipitation enrichment in non-karst soils. Path analysis suggested that non-metallic soil factors such as soil bulk density (BD), total nitrogen (TN) and ammonium nitrogen (NH₄ ⁺-N) had direct effect on the content of heavy metals in soil. (2) The proportion of 0.25-2 mm aggregates in the surface soil of vegetation restoration belt was more than 40%, and the proportion of surface soil ≤2 mm aggregates in this increased to 83% and 88%, respectively, which could improve the soil structure and properties effectively. (3) Vegetation restoration effectively restored the nutrient elements such as carbon and nitrogen in the soil, and enhanced the soil material circulation. Furthermore the content of heavy metals in the surface soil higher than that in the 10-20 cm soil layer. Plant absorption, biosorption mechanism of microorganisms, coupling of root exudates, dissolution of soil soluble organic carbon and pH make the contents of heavy metals Cr, Ni and Pb in vegetation restoration belt slightly lower than those in karst soil. At the same time, affected by vegetation coverage, residual heavy metals in soil are further leached by surface runoff. Therefore, the content of heavy metals in soil could reduce combined heavy metal enrichment plants for extraction with remediation. This study elucidates the advantages and remedy mechanism of vegetation restoration in the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils in Caohai area of Guizhou, and this plant activation and enrichment extraction remediation technology would be popularized and applied in the remediation of heavy metal contaminated soils in other karst areas.

Spatial distribution of heavy metals in rice grains and human health risk assessment in Hunan Province, China

Rice is the main food in China, and its pollution by heavy metals has attracted widespread attention. In this study, rice grain samples were collected from 14 prefecture-level cities in Hunan Province, China. The contents of 9 heavy metals (i.e., As, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb, and Sb) were measured using graphite digestion-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Pearson correlation analysis and principal component analysis were performed to evaluate the correlation among these heavy metals. In addition, ordinary kriging interpolation were applied to investigate the spatial distribution pattern of the heavy metals. Results showed that the average concentrations of these heavy metals were 0.48 (As), 1.28 (Cr), 0.03 (Co), 0.84 (Ni), 2.39 (Cu), 15.73 (Zn), 0.28 (Cd), 0.66 (Pb), and 0.0043 (Sb) mg/kg, respectively. The single-factor pollution index (SFPI) contamination assessment showed that As, Pb, Cr, Ni, and Cd accumulated significantly in the rice grain, with over-standard rates of 100%, 100%, 64.70%, 47.05%, and 44.12%, respectively. The Sb concentrations at the sampling sites were low, and there was no obvious pollution. Health risk assessment showed that the target hazard quotient followed the order of As> Cr> Cd> Pb> 1.0> Co> Cu> Zn> Ni> Sb, and the carcinogenic risk value was in the order of Cd> Ni> As> Cr> 1.0×10^-4> Pb. In particular, quick actions should be taken to regulate As, Cr, and Cd contents in rice because they posed greater non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks than the others to the local residents.

Driving effects and transfer prediction of heavy metal(loid)s in contaminated courtyard gardens using redundancy analysis and multilayer perceptron

The distribution and migration of heavy metal(loid)s in the soil-vegetable systems of courtyard gardens near mining areas have rarely been investigated, leading to potential food safety risks for residents. Moreover, the existing research is mainly focused on the total content of heavy metal(loid)s (tMetals) rather than the bioavailable contents (aMetals). In this study, 26 and 28 pairs of soil and vegetable samples were collected from the courtyard gardens near the Realgar mine in Baiyun Town and the lead-zinc (Pb-Zn) mine in Shuikoushan Town, respectively. The tMetal and aMetal of cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), arsenic (As), Pb, chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), Zn, manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), and calcium (Ca) in the samples were analyzed in this study. The results showed that courtyard gardens were polluted by various heavy metal(loid)s at varying degrees. The bioavailabilities of different metals varied significantly, among which Cd has the highest bioavailability (> 30%). In the transfer process of heavy metal(loid)s, the transfer rate (Tf) was ranked as soil-roots (1.50) > stems-leaves (1.07) > roots-stems (0.46) > stems-fruits (0.33). Redundancy analysis was used to evaluate the driving effects, and the results revealed that aCa, aZn, and aFe in soil could inhibit the absorption of aCd by plant roots. Soil organic matter was the inhibiting factor regarding the transfer of aAs and aCu, whereas it was also the promoting factor for transferring aPb, aNi, and aCr. Furthermore, the multilayer perceptron (MLP) could effectively predict the Tf of heavy metal(loid)s based on the aMetal. The R² values of the MLP were ranked as follows: 0.91 for As, 0.88 for Zn, 0.85 for Hg, 0.83 for Cu, 0.79 for Cr, 0.66 for Cd, 0.65 for Pb, and 0.52 for Ni. This study emphasizes the aMetal-based ecological characteristics and prediction ability. The study results are significant for guiding residents to strategize appropriate crop planting and ensure the safe production and consumption of vegetables.
