Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) graphene oxide (GO)-based aerogels, GO and 4-methyl-5-thiazoleethanol (MTZE) composites, were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. Due to the hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions, the produced 3D GO-MTZE composites possessed large cylindrical structures. The morphologies, composition, and chemical states of 3D GO-MTZE3:1 composite were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms based on the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method. The existence of nitrogen (N)-containing heterocyclic system and oxygen (O)-containing branched chain of MTZE contributed to the formation of 3D structures, while the complexation effect of heterocyclic sulfur (S)- and N-containing functional groups of MTZE for metal cations dominated the adsorption performance of 3D GO-MTZE3:1 composite, which could selectively adsorb copper ions (Cu2+). In addition, the better hydrophobic property of 3D GO-MTZE3:1 composite facilitates its facile recycling from aqueous solution after adsorption. The adsorption data of 3D GO-MTZE3:1 composite toward Cu2+ fitted well (R2 = 0.9996) with the linear pseudo-second-order kinetic model, giving an equilibrium rate constant (k2) of 0.0187 g mg-1 min-1. The linear Langmuir isothermal model could more accurately describe the experimental data, indicating the adsorption process is mainly dominated by the complexation interactions between MTZE and Cu2+. The thermodynamic parameters of ΔG° (< 0), ΔH° (> 0), and ΔS° (> 0) further indicate that the adsorption is a spontaneous and endothermic, confirming that the complexation between Cu2+ and 3D GO-MTZE3:1 composite occurs. Due to its high selectivity for Cu2+, good hydrophobicity, and excellent stability, the developed 3D GO-MTZE3:1 composite possesses might be promisingly used in the aqueous selective enrichment/removal of Cu2+.

Abstract
The adsorption of Eu(III) on composites synthesised from graphene oxide (GO), maghemite (MGH), and chitosan (CS) has been studied using different approaches. The physicochemical and morphological characteristics of the composites GO-MGH, GO-CS, GO-MGH-CS I, II, and III were determined by XRD, Mössbauer spectroscopy, FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, and TEM. According to the results of batch experiments, the maximum experimental adsorption capacity was 52, 54, 25, 103, and 102 mg/g for GO-MGH, GO-CS, GO-MGH-CS I, II, and III, respectively. The data obtained are in better agreement with the Langmuir, pseudo-second-order, and pseudo-first-order models only for GO-MGH. Thus, the adsorption of Eu(III) on the composites was a favourable, monolayer, and occurred at homogeneous sites. The nature of adsorption is chemical and, in the case of GO-MGH, physical. Tests of the composites in natural waters showed a high removal efficiency for Eu(III), Pu(IV), and Am(III), ranging from 74 to 100%. The ANFIS model has quite good predictive ability, as shown by the values for R2, MSE, SSE, and ARE. The GO-MGH-CS composites with the high adsorption capacity could be promising candidates for the removal of Eu(III) and the pre-concentration of Pu(IV) and Am(III) from natural waters.

Abstract
Now the wide use of nanooxides is attributed to their remarkable collection of properties. Nanocomposites have an impressive variety of important applications. A thermal decomposition approach provides a more optimistic method for nanocrystal synthesis due to the low cost, high efficiency, and expectations for large-scale production. Therefore, in this study a new eco-friendly nanooxide composite with sorption characteristics for europium (Eu(III)) and strontium (Sr(II)) was synthesized by a one-step thermal treatment process using earth-abundant tafla clay as a starting material to prepare a modified tafla (M-Taf) nanocomposite. The synthesized nancomposite was characterized by different techniques before and after sorption processes. Different factors that affected the sorption behavior of Eu(III) and Sr(II) in aqueous media by the M-Taf nanocomposite were studied. The results obtained illustrated that the kinetics of sorption of Eu(III) and Sr(II) by the M-Taf nanocomposite are obeyed according to the pseudo-second order and controlled by a Langmuir isotherm model with maximum sorption capacities (Q max) of 25.5 and 23.36 mg/g for Eu(III) and Sr(II), respectively. Also, this novel low-cost and eco-friendly sorbent has promising properties and can be used to separate and retain some radionuclides in different applications.

Abstract
Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectroscopy provides structural information of prime importance to understand ions coordination to adsorbents. This consequently aids in the design of improved ion exchange materials and help in deriving the optimum adsorption conditions. In the present work, the adsorption mechanism of both U(VI)/Th(IV) and Ra(II)/Ba(II) radionuclides couples onto polystyrene-nano manganese dioxide (PS-NMO) composite is reported in relation to the effect of working solution pH. The separation of each radionuclide couple; i.e. U(VI)/Th(IV) and Ra(II)/Ba(II); could be effectively achieved at pH = 3 and pH = 1 respectively. The pH values not only determine the species of the respected elements that are mainly present in aqueous solution before applying the adsorbent, but it also alters the structure of the composite adsorbent. FTIR spectroscopy showed that Th(IV) formed inner sphere complexes and occupied the A site in the dioxide layer, while U(VI) formed outer sphere complexes on the surface of the composite. Spectra subtraction showed that some aromatic bands and vinyl C-H bands were split or shifted to lower wavenumbers with the loading of Ba(II). This was attributed to changes in the composite stereochemistry to accommodate Ba(II). The working solution pH could be the key in the separation process of both U(VI)/Th(IV) and Ra(II)/Ba(II) from their mixture, and FTIR spectroscopy stands as a useful technique to explain the difference between metal ions responses to adsorbants.

Abstract
Herein, using dialdehyde waste paper (DAWP) as a cross-linking agent to immobilize persimmon tannin (PT) was first used to remove the U(VI) and Cr(VI) via the "waste control by waste" concept. The microscopic and macroscopic surface properties of the as-prepared adsorbent was characterized by the advanced characterization techniques. Factors that affected the elimination process such as variable pH, coexistence ions and equilibrium time were investigated by batch techniques. The results showed that the maximal removal capacities of U(VI) and Cr(VI) on DAWP-PT were 242.3 mg/g (pH = 6.0) and 178.7 mg/g (pH = 2.0) at 298 K, which exhibited competitiveness with most of the reported solid materials. Meanwhile, adsorption data were fitted perfectly to the Langmuir and Pseudo-second-order equations, which indicated that the monolayer and homogenous chemisorption dominated the removal process. The SEM-EDX, DFT and XPS analysis conformed that adsorption of U(VI) was mainly via surface complexation, while the elimination of Cr(VI) was a redox reaction process, and about 65.33% of Cr(III) and 34.67% of Cr(VI) co-existed onto the surface of DAWP-PT. Thus, this study would provide a high-efficiency and low-cost adsorbent for radionuclide and heavy metal treatment.

Abstract
The selective elimination of long-lived radioactive actinides from complicated solutions is crucial for pollution management of the environment. Knowledge about the species, structures and interaction mechanism of actinides at solid–water interfaces is helpful to understand and to evaluate physicochemical behavior in the natural environment. In this review, we summarize recent works about the sorption and interaction mechanism of actinides (using U, Np, Pu, Cm and Am as representative actinides) on natural clay minerals and man-made nanomaterials. The species and microstructures of actinides on solid particles were investigated by advanced spectroscopy techniques and computational theoretical calculations. The reduction and solidification of actinides on solid particles is the most effective way to immobilize actinides in the natural environment. The contents of this review may be helpful in evaluating the migration of actinides in near-field nuclear waste repositories and the mobilization properties of radionuclides in the environment.

Abstract
The binary nanocomposites of metal/covalent-organic frameworks (NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-1) were constructed by solvothermal method, which was developed as a multifunctional platform with adsorption and photocatalysis for radionuclides removal. The batch experiments and physicochemical property (FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, etc.) corroborated: (i) core-shell NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-1 had a more stable, multilayer pore structure and abundant active functional groups; (ii) NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-1 had fast a removal rate, as well as a high adsorption capacity of 536.73 mg (UO22+)/g and 593.97 mg (Eu3+)/g; (iii) the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model provided a more reasonable description, indicating the immobilization process was endothermic, spontaneous chemisorption; (iv) the adsorption mechanism was chelation and electrostatic attraction, ascribed to the nitrogen/oxygen-containing functional groups. These results illustrated that NH2-MIL-125(Ti)@TpPa-1 was a prospective adsorbent for the remediation polluted by radionuclides. In addition, the research provided the theoretical basis for further investigation on the UO22+(VI) photoreduction.

Abstract
Graphene-based materials have received much attention as attractive candidates for the adsorptive removal of pollutants from water due to their large surface area and diverse active sites for adsorption. The design of graphene-based adsorbents for target pollutants is based on the underlying adsorption mechanisms. Understanding the adsorption performance of graphene-based materials and its correlation to the interaction mechanisms between the pollutants and adsorbents is crucial to the further development of graphene-based functional materials and their practical applications. This review summarizes recent advances on the development of graphene-based materials for the adsorption of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oils, and the co-adsorption of their mixture from water. The material design, performance, regeneration and reuse of adsorbents, and the associated adsorption mechanisms are discussed. Various techniques for mechanistic studies of the adsorption of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oils on graphene-based materials are highlighted. The remaining challenges and perspectives for future development and investigation of graphene-based materials as adsorbents are also presented.

Abstract
With the development of nuclear power, the negative environmental impact such as radioactive pollution has become an urgent issue to impede the utilization of nuclear energy. The construction of promising organic-inorganic hybrid materials is considered as an effective strategy for environmental remediation of radioactive contamination. In this work, two-dimensional transition metal carbide (MXene), an emerging inorganic layered material, has been successfully modified by carboxyl terminated aryl diazonium salt to both enhance its chelating ability to radionuclides and improve its water stability. The carboxyl functionalized Ti3C2Tx MXene (TCCH) shows excellent removal ability for U(VI) and Eu(III), evidenced by ultrafast adsorption kinetics (3 min), high maximum adsorption capacities (344.8 mg/g for U and 97.1 mg/g for Eu) and high removal percentage of radionuclides from artificial groundwater (> 90%). The adsorption of U(VI) and Eu(III) on TCCH are in good accord with the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Ionic strength experiments, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analyses were conducted to assess the detailed adsorption mechanism. The results reveal that the adsorption of U(VI) on TCCH follows an inner-sphere configuration, whereas the adsorption of Eu(III) is determined by both inner-sphere complexation and electrostatic interaction.

Abstract
Dispersion of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) has drawn special research attentions because the environmental behavior, risks, and applications of ENPs are greatly dependent on their dispersing status. This review summarizes the latest research progress of dispersion mechanisms, environmental applications in contaminants adsorption, and toxicity of ENPs dispersed in liquid and in solid matrix (3D-ENPs). Dispersion mechanisms of ENPs, including steric hindrance, electrostatic repulsion and "micelle wrapping" are well understood in single dispersing agent, however, the prediction of ENPs dispersion in real environments is not straightforward because of the diversity of structures, components, and properties of natural organic molecule mixtures. The adsorption characteristics, depending on the exposed surface areas in liquid, are significantly different between dispersed and aggregated ENPs. Comparing with the aggregated ENPs, the toxicity of dispersed ENPs is generally enhanced due to the increased uptake, released metal ions, carried contaminants, and induced ROS. 3D-ENPs not only inherit the excellent adsorption performance of ENPs dispersed in liquid, but also are beneficial to the separation and recycle from aqueous solutions due to their 3D rigid structures. However, the adsorption mechanisms as affected by environmental conditions are still unclear. Additionally, the potential risks of 3D-ENPs should be paid more attentions, with an emphasis on free radicals and stability of 3D structure.

Abstract
Graphene oxide (GO) was chemically modified by bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amino groups (BPED) through a multistep procedure. For comparison, and to justify the grafting of BPED groups onto the GO sheets, the GO-based material obtained after each step was used as a solid phase adsorbent for removing Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) metal ions from aqueous solutions. The influence of metal ion concentrations, pH, contact time and temperature on their adsorption onto the GO-based adsorbents was investigated and the GO-EDA-CAC-BPED adsorbent showed the highest ability to adsorb Cu(II), Ni(II) and Co(II) with a concentration of 250 mg.L-1 at pH = 7. Additionally, it was demonstrated that the equilibrium adsorption capacities of these metal ions followed the order of Cu(II)>Ni(II)>Co(II) whatever the GO-based adsorbent. Moreover, to examine the underlying mechanism of the adsorption process, pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Elovich or Roginsky-Zeldovich and intraparticle diffusion models were fitted to experimental kinetic data. It was shown that the pseudo-second-order model was the most appropriate one to describe the adsorption of heavy metal ions by the GO-based materials. Finally, it was demonstrated that their desorption/regeneration capacities were higher than 10 cycles, opening the path to the removal of metal ions from wastewater solutions.

Abstract
A well-defined magnetic metal organic frameworks (MOFs)/graphene oxide (Fe3O4@HKUST-1/GO) consisting of magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles, HKUST-1 nanocrystal and GO was synthesized through a simple and environmentally friendly approach. Characterizations of Fe3O4@HKUST-1/GO adsorbing U(VI) with high-resolution transmission electron microscopy suggested that the Fe3O4@HKUST-1/GO possessed good stability. The introduction of GO enhanced the ability of particles to uptake U(VI) from aqueous solution. The effects of solution pH, contact time and temperature on U(VI) adsorption were systematically tested by intermittent experiments. The adsorption process can be better described by the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results showed that the Fe3O4@HKUST-1/GO exhibited good adsorption capacity towards U(VI) at the initial solution pH value of 4.0 and T = 318 K. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy was used to analyze the U(VI) removal mechanism. This work represents the application of Fe3O4@HKUST-1/GO as a novel adsorbent to extract U(VI) from contaminated water.

Abstract
Graphene adsorbents have been applied to remove diverse pollutants from aqueous systems. However, the mechanical strength of most graphene adsorbents is low and the fragile graphene sheets are released into the environment. In this study, we prepared carboxylated graphene oxide/chitosan/cellulose (GCCSC) composite beads with good mechanical strength for the immobilization of Cu2+ from both water and soil. The proportional limit of GCCSC beads was 3.2 N, a much larger value than graphene oxide beads (0.2 N). The largest pressure for GCCSC beads recorded before brittle failure was 26 N. The Cu2+ adsorption capacity of GCCSC beads was 22.4 mg/g in aqueous systems at initial Cu2+ concentration of 40 μg/mL, which is competitive with many efficient adsorbents. The partition coefficient (PC) for the Cu2+ adsorption onto GCCSC beads was 1.12 mg/g/μM at Ce of 0.83 mg/L and qe of 14.3 mg/g. The PC decreased to 0.055 mg/g/μM at Ce of 26.0 mg/L and qe of 22.4 mg/g. The adsorption kinetics of Cu2+ on GCCSC beads were moderately fast and required approximately 3 h to reach equilibrium with a k2 of 0.0021 g/(mg·min). A lower temperature and higher pH slightly increased the adsorption capacity of GCCSC beads. The ionic strength did not influence the adsorption. The porous structure of GCCSC beads blocked the direct contact between soil and the graphene surface; thus, a high Cu2+ immobilization efficiency was achieved by GCCSC beads applied to soil. The implications for the design of high-performance graphene adsorbents for water and soil remediation are discussed.
