Abstract
Cooking food at high temperatures can lead to the formation of harmful chemical compounds called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the concentrations of 16 PAHs in cooked fish using roasting, barbecuing, or grilling techniques. The Monte Carlo simulation method was employed to accurately assess and quantify the uncertainties associated with risk estimation. This study compiled data on PAH levels in cooked fish using gas or charcoal from 57 original published articles in the PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science databases between January 1, 2010 to December 30, 2023. The investigation showed that 55.1% of cooked fish was made by grilling, 35.1% by barbecuing, and 9.8% by roasting. Based on the 95th percentile Hazard Quotient (HQ) from fish consumption, the ranking of 8 PAHs was as follows: Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP = 14.10) > Pyrene (Pyr = 0.29) > Fluorene (Flu = 0.23) > Naphthalene (Nap = 0.22) > Fluoranthene (Flrt = 0.12) > Acenaphthene (Ace = 0.11) > Acenaphthylene (Acy = 0.04) > Anthracene (Anth = 0.02). However, the non-carcinogenic risk ratio for other PAH compounds in fish consumption, excluding BaP, was found to be less than one (HQ < 1). The 95th percentile lifetime excess cancer risk (LTCR) values for 8 PAH compounds (BaP (4.35E- 9) > Anth (6.10E- 11) > Flrt (9.35E- 12) > Pyr (7.04E- 12) > Ace (6.56E- 12) > Flu (4.97E- 12) > Nap (4.39E- 12) > Acy (2.57E- 12)) from fish consumption were negligible and can be disregarded (LTCR < 10- 6). Based on the analysis of the findings, it can be concluded that the consumption of cooked fish using various methods worldwide does not present a carcinogenic risk linked to PAHs.

Abstract
The lockdown restrictions against coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have led to unprecedented reductions in global anthropogenic activities. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic combustion-induced pollutants, but the influence of anthropogenic responses to COVID-19 on PAH contamination remains largely unknown. Here we quantified the impacts of lockdown restrictions on 16PAH pollution based on the data in concentrations dissolved in the water phase and absorbed on the suspended particulate matter (SPM) in the Elbe River from 2015 to 2021 and determined the changes in source contributions classified by individual years and stations. Results show that the annual average PAH concentrations in water and SPM were determined as 0.055 μg·L-1 and 3.77 mg·kg-1 from 2015 to 2021, respectively. Pronounced declines in PAH on SPM (up to -18 %) were observed during the three lockdowns in Germany from 2020 to 2021. However, dramatic rebounds of anthropogenic activities during the removal of the lockdown led to increases (up to 29 %) in ∑16PAH concentrations compared to the same period in previous years. Through the source apportionment method, vehicle and coal emissions were the two most predominant sources of PAHs in the river. Vehicle contribution decreased during the lockdown, while coal emissions increased by 5 %. Health risks for three age groups were assessed as potential low risk and decreased by 18 % from 1.54 × 10-4 in 2015 to 1.27 × 10-4 in 2019, and rebounded to 1.40 × 10-4 in 2020-2021. The findings of this study highlight the strong consistency between PAH concentrations and anthropogenic intensity, implying that source control from improved cleaner production is an effective pathway for mitigating PAH contamination in the aquatic environment.

This review provides a synthesis of the current and emerging risks, data gaps, and opportunities for food safety in agrifood initiatives aiming to advance circular economy models.

Abstract
This paper reviews the published terminology, mathematical models, and the possible approaches used to characterise the risk of foodborne chemical hazards, particularly pesticides, metals, mycotoxins, acrylamide, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results confirmed the wide variability of the nomenclature used, e.g., 28 different ways of referencing exposure, 13 of cancer risk, or 9 of slope factor. On the other hand, a total of 16 equations were identified to formulate all the risk characterisation parameters of interest. Therefore, the present study proposes a terminology and formulation for some risk characterisation parameters based on the guidelines of international organisations and the literature review. The mathematical model used for non-genotoxic hazards is a ratio in all cases. However, the authors used the probability of cancer or different ratios, such as the margin of exposure (MOE) for genotoxic hazards. For each effect studied per hazard, the non-genotoxic effect was mostly studied in pesticides (79.73%), the genotoxic effect was mostly studied in PAHs (71.15%), and both effects were mainly studied in metals (59.4%). The authors of the works reviewed generally opted for a deterministic approach, although most of those who assessed the risk for mycotoxins or the ratio and risk for acrylamide used the probabilistic approach.

Abstract
Tandoori cooking is a popular food preparation method in India involving a unique combination of grilling, baking, barbecuing, and roasting processes. This study determined the levels of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in tandoori chicken and assessed the associated health risk. The sum of 16 PAHs concentration ranged from 25.4 to 3733 μg/kg with an average of 440 ± 853 μg/kg. Analyzed samples demonstrated major contribution of 2, 3, and 4 ring PAHs. Diagnostic ratios identified combustion and high-temperature processes as the main source favoring PAHs generation in these samples. Benzo(a)pyrene equivalents and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) estimates for different population groups (boys, girls, adult males, adult females, elderly males, elderly females) associated with dietary intake of these products ranged from 6.88E-05 to 4.13E-03 and 1.63E-08 to 1.72E-06, respectively. Since the ILCR values fell within the safe limits (1E-06, i.e., nonsignificant), the consumption of tandoori chicken may be considered as safe. The study emphasizes the need for extensive studies on PAHs formation in tandoori food products.

Abstract
Coatings are considered to play a crucial role in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). In this work, a novel coating named ZIF-67/[HOEMIM]BF4 was fabricated through in situ potentiostatic electrodeposition in methanol solutions containing ZIF-67 precursors and 1-(2'-hydroxyethyl)-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([HOEMIM]BF4). Compared with the traditional solvothermal method, this method reduced the synthesis time and enabled ZIF-67 to grow directly on the surface of stainless-steel wire, effectively simplifying the preparation process and improving the coating reproducibility. Owing to the inherent characteristics such as high porosity and high thermal and mechanical stability, and the impressive morphological regulation and extraction function of [HOEMIM]BF4, the developed coating exhibited a prolonged service life and a better extraction capacity for trace polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) compared to single ZIF-67 and commercial fibers. Under the optimal conditions, the linear range of the ZIF-67/[HOEMIM]BF4-based SPME-GC method was 0.01-500 μg L-1, and the detection limit was 0.27-5.2 ng L-1. When applied in the determination of PAHs in a real water sample, recoveries between 85.6-117.3% were obtained, indicating the potential of ZIF-67/[HOEMIM]BF4 in the high efficiency SPME and GC analysis of PAHs.

Abstract
This survey focuses on an environmental parasitology study by investigating Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) bioaccumulation and the occurrence of Anisakis spp. on common anchovies collected from Moroccan coasts over 9 months through chemical (PAH) and Biological (Biometrics and parasitic) analysis. Obtained results were statistically analyzed and human health risks from anchovies consumption were assessed. The results obtained highlighted the good biological and chemical status of this fish in all stations of Morocco's coasts. Anisakis spp. was present in only four stations in the Atlantic fringe (maximum prevalence 22.22 %). Results have shown non-significant differences for tissue nature (Muscle, viscera) or spatial variation and were within a low range of concentrations well below the European Commission standards. Results have shown no serious harmful risk for humans from this fish consumption (ILCR and HI), and statistical analysis had shown positive correlations between prevalence and Chr, prevalence and sex-ratio, and prevalence and weight.

Abstract
The present study used Chrysomya megacephala larvae (CML) to transform food waste into safe and high-quality fish feed to substitute fish meal as a source of protein for growing Oujiang color common carps followed by a human health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The results showed the ∑PAH concentration in the CML fed with food waste ranged from 50 to 370 μg kg-1, and the most abundant PAH compound in the CML was BaP, contributing 59-84% of ∑PAHs. The Pearson correlation analysis results indicated no correlation between the ∑PAH concentrations and the culture substrate ratio (p > 0.05). Concentrations of BaP in the CML decreased with the increase of breeding density (p < 0.01). The residues as organic fertilizers have no potential ecological risk for PAHs. The biotransformed larva meal was used to partially or completely replace the fish meal as supplementary protein in the experimental feeds (T0, 0%; T50, 50%; T100, 100%). No significant difference (p < 0.05) of survival rate, lipid, and protein content in Oujiang color common carp was noted among T0, T50, and T100 fish feeds. Concentrations of ∑PAHs in Oujiang color common carp fed with the CML fish feeds all met the food safety standards in the European Union (EU). Furthermore, the consumption of Oujiang color common carps fed with the CML feed does not pose any health risks of PAHs for humans.

Abstract
In order to realize the value-added utilization of food waste (FW), the preparation of crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) feed by yeast fermentation was investigated. Firstly, the suitable fermentation condition was obtained through a single factor experiment as follows: the initial moisture of the FW was adjusted to 60% with bran and inoculated with a 2% yeast mixture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida utilis, and Yarrowia lipolytica, 3:2:1) followed by aerobic solid-state fermentation for 7 days. The crude protein and acid-soluble protein contents in the fermented feed were 25.14% and 5.16%, which were increased by 8% and 140.67%, respectively. The crude fat content was 0.74%, decreased by 68.29%. The content of antioxidant glutathione (571.78 μg/g) increased 63.33%, and the activities of protease and amylase increased nearly 9 and 3 times, respectively. The maximum degradation rates of aflatoxin B1, zearalenone, and deoxynivalenol were 63.83%, 77.52%, and 80.16%, respectively. The fermented feeds were evaluated by substituting (0%, 10%, 30%, 50%, and 100%) commercial diet for crayfish (30-day culture period). When the replacement proportion was 30%, the weight gain of crayfish reached 44.87% (initial body weight 13.98 ± 0.41 g), which was significantly increased by 10.25% compared with the control (p = 0.0005). In addition, the lysozyme and SOD enzyme activities in crayfish hepatopancreas were also increased significantly. Our findings suggest that yeast-fermented feed from FW can replace 30% of crayfish's conventional diet, which may improve crayfish's antioxidant capacity and enhance non-specific immunity by providing molecules such as glutathione.

Abstract
Dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in fish fillet counteract the health benefits of fish products. In this study, food waste was used as a protein alternative to replacing fishmeal commonly used in the commercial fish feed, aiming to cultivate Sabah grouper with acceptable levels of dioxins and dl-PCBs. The concentrations of dioxins and dl-PCBs, as well as the fish growth performance, were compared between the fish groups fed with food waste-based feed (FWBF) and commercial feed (Nanyu®, control). The results showed that the concentrations of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) (1.22 pg/g dry weight (d.w.)) and non-ortho-dl-PCBs (13.0 pg/g d.w.) were significantly lower (p < 0.05) in the FWBF than in the control feed (commercial feed) (PCDDs: 2.35 pg/g d.w.; non-ortho-dl-PCBs: 27.2 pg/g d.w.). The growth performance of the fish group fed with the FWBF was comparable to that fed with the control feed. There were no significant differences between the WHO2005-TEQ values of different fish fillets (1.00, 1.11, and 1.10 pg WHO2005-TEQ/g d.w. for FWBF group, control feed group, and local market fish, respectively). Based on the guidelines provided by European Food Safety Authority (ESFA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), the fish fed with the FWBF were safe for human consumption (hazard index values: 0.284-0.522; cancer risk range: 2.59-2.97 × 10-5). The findings of this study suggest that food waste could serve as an alternative protein source for cultivating Sabah grouper with acceptable levels of dioxins and dl-PCBs.

Abstract
Phenanthrene (Phe), one of the most commonly detected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, poses a potential threat to marine ecosystems due to its strong toxicity to aquatic organisms. Developing marine water quality criteria (WQC) is critical to effectively control Phe pollution. This study conducted 10 acute toxicity tests and 4 chronic toxicity tests using native species in the Bohai Sea, China and found that the half-lethal/effective concentrations (LC50/EC50) of Phe for all tested organisms were in the range of 0.198-50.142 mg/L. Among them, the mysid Neomysis awatschensis was the most sensitive species, and the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was the least sensitive. In terms of chronic toxicity, the range of no-observed-effect concentrations (NOECs) for the four tested organisms was 0.0156-4.00 mg/L. Based on the toxicity data and other data collected from existing databases and literature, the established species sensitivity distribution (SSD) model revealed that the marine WQC for Phe was 39.55 μg/L. Furthermore, the reliability of the derived criteria was verified by measuring multiple endpoints of Skeletonema costatum and Brachionus plicatilis after chronic exposure to Phe. Finally, the environmental concentrations of Phe in the Bohai Sea were determined to be 8.0-318 ng/L, and the joint probability curve (JPC) results showed that the ecological risk of Phe was acceptable. This study provides a reference for developing seawater quality standards for Phe.

Abstract
The level and distribution of 16 USEPA Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) in aquaculture farmed fish (Mugil cephalus and Oreochromis mossambicus) and shellfish (Corbicula fluminea Formosa and Meretrix lusoria) were determined in Taiwan and then assessed cancer and non-cancer risks for those consuming these kinds of seafood. Results indicated that C. fluminea Formosa accumulated the highest average concentration of total PAHs (43.0 ± 11.3 ng/g wet weight) while M. lusoria contained the lowest concentration (20.0 ± 5.8 ng/g) among all species. The low-molecular-weight PAHs were dominant for both fish and shellfish, which consistent with other studies. Notably, parts of high-molecular-weight PAHs were found in shellfish whereas that was little in fish. The calculated hazard quotients (HQ) of all PAHs were smaller than 1 and the incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCR) for Benzo[a]pyrene were below 1 × 10-5, suggesting that PAHs in the collected seafood could pose a low hazard to residents. Although the results indicated that the studied seafood is safe for human consumption, children and seniors post relatively higher risks, suggesting that it needs to continue monitoring and control the PAHs concentration in seafood and the associated environments.

Multi-Media Exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons at Lake Chaohu, the Fifth Largest Fresh Water Lake in China: Residual Levels, Sources and Carcinogenic Risk. ATMOSPHERE 2021. Abstract
The residual levels of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in environment media and freshwater fish were collected and measured from Lake Chaohu by using Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Potential atmospheric sources were identified by molecular diagnostic ratios and the positive matrix factorization (PMF) method. PAH exposure doses through inhalation, intake of water and freshwater fish ingestion were estimated by the assessment model recommended by US EPA. The carcinogenic risks of PAH exposure were evaluated by probabilistic risk assessment and Monte Carlo simulation. The following results were obtained: (1) The PAH16 levels in gaseous, particulate phase, water and fish muscles were 59.4 ng·m−3, 14.2 ng·m−3, 170 ng·L−1 and 114 ng·g−1, respectively. No significant urban-rural difference was found between two sampling sites except gaseous BaPeq. The relationship between gaseous PAHs and PAH in water was detected by the application of Spearman correlation analysis. (2) Three potential sources were identified by the PMF model. The sources from biomass combustions, coal combustion and vehicle emission accounted for 43.6%, 30.6% and 25.8% of the total PAHs, respectively. (3) Fish intake has the highest lifetime average daily dose (LADD) of 3.01 × 10−6 mg·kg−1·d−1, followed by the particle inhalation with LADD of 2.94 × 10−6 mg·kg−1·d−1. (4) As a result of probabilistic cancer risk assessment, the median ILCRs were 3.1 × 10−5 to 3.3 × 10−5 in urban and rural residents, which were lower than the suggested serious level but higher than the acceptable level. In summary, the result suggests that potential carcinogenic risk exists among residents around Lake Chaohu. Fish ingestion and inhalation are two major PAH exposure pathways.

Abstract
The present study objective was to assess polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Bizerte and Ghar El Melh Lagoons Solea solea and to assess the potential risk to human health from its consumption. To reach these objectives twenty fish samples from each site were collected and 15 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analyzed in their muscles using high-performance liquid chromatography with a fluorescence detector. Total PAH sole concentrations from Bizerte and Ghar El Melh Lagoons were similar or lower to those recorded in other species from other regions across the world. In the studied fish species, the 2 and 3 ring PAHs are the dominated compounds that enter to the composition of PAHs which indicates that PAHs could be principally derived from a petrogenic origin for the both studied lagoons. The human health risk by sole consumption was evaluated and revealed to exhibit no hazard to the local population health concerning PAH intakes. The findings of this biomonitoring study will help in the implementation of sustainable environmental policies for effective water pollution control and the two investigated lagoons management.

Abstract
Different specimens of Mullus surmuletus from the Catania Gulf (Sicily) were sampled and analysed for the quantification of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in order to evaluate the distribution of these pollutants and the potential human health risks associated to the consumption of fish. The determined PAHs concentration values ranged from 0.25 to 6.10 ng/g wet weight and the most abundant PAHs detected were lower molecular weight (LMW) compounds with 2 to 3 rings. Relying on the PAHs concentration values, on the consumption data and on the total toxic equivalent (TEQ), the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) was assessed and its calculated value (2.97 × 10-7) is far below the "maximum acceptable risk level" (ARL), suggesting a low potential carcinogenic risk on consuming M. surmuletus for local population. Even though the study shows a quite low contamination level in M. surmuletus, intensive monitoring programmes are still highly needed in order to provide a better picture of the PAHs distribution in Catania Gulf and of the human health risk linked to fish consumption.

Abstract
This study aimed to determine the spatial distribution of PM2.5 and PM10 collected in four regions (North, Central, South and East Coast) of Peninsular Malaysia during the southwest monsoon. Concurrent measurements of PM2.5 and PM10 were performed using a high volume sampler (HVS) for 24 h (August to September 2018) collecting a total of 104 samples. All samples were then analysed for water soluble inorganic ions (WSII) using ion chromatography, trace metals using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs) using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The results showed that the highest average PM2.5 concentration during the sampling campaign was in the North region (33.2 ± 5.3 μg m-3) while for PM10 the highest was in the Central region (38.6 ± 7.70 μg m-3). WSII recorded contributions of 22% for PM2.5 and 20% for PM10 mass, with SO42- the most abundant species with average concentrations of 1.83 ± 0.42 μg m-3 (PM2.5) and 2.19 ± 0.27 μg m-3 (PM10). Using a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) model, soil fertilizer (23%) was identified as the major source of PM2.5 while industrial activity (25%) was identified as the major source of PM10. Overall, the studied metals had hazard quotients (HQ) value of <1 indicating a very low risk of non-carcinogenic elements while the highest excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) was recorded for Cr VI in the South region with values of 8.4E-06 (PM2.5) and 6.6E-05 (PM10). The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) calculated from the PAH concentrations was within the acceptable range for all regions.

Abstract
8∑PAHs in 2- and 4-month-old desi chicken organs collected from Faisalabad district, Punjab, Pakistan, were examined via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Exposure doses (AVDD) of PAHs with consequential lifetime excess cancer risks (LtECR) were also estimated in people ingesting laboratory barbecued (Lb) and commercially barbecued (Cb) desi meat organs. The results exposed the presence of 8ΣPAH in 2- and 4-month-old Lb and Cb chicken organs: drumsticks (Ds), breast (BS), and wings (Ws) (0.45, 3.10, 0.97 ng g-1; 2.52, 4.31, 1.22 ng g-1; and 10.09, 15.04, and 9.06 ng g-1 respectively). BαP was found only in Cb organs with the highest concentrations (5.08 ng g-1) in Bs. It was above the EU's tolerable limit, while it was not detected in all Lb organs. The lowest level of 8ΣPAH was found in 2-month-old desi Ws. A comparative percentage increase in 8ΣPAH levels between all Lb and Cb organs was found in the range of 1500-2416.67%. LtECR for males and adults were ranging from 1.35 × E-13 to 4.49 × E-5 at different consumption rates with AVDD ranging from 1.08 E-6 to 6.01 E-5. In contrast to 2- and 4- month-old chicken meat, 2-month-old desi meat is better having less PAH load. Comparing different organs, Ws of former one displayed abridged PAH levels. In conclusion, Lb desi meat is less carcinogenic relative to Cb. More PAH levels are due to secondary smoke in Cb samples collected from the metropolitan. Ingestion of Lb 2-month-old desi chicken organs could be safe to dine as compared with 4-month-old desi and Cb organs. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
A facile method was introduced for preparing a biocharcoal aerogel, which was derived from pomelo peel as the only raw material. The inner spongy layer of pomelo peel was freeze-dried for maintaining three-dimensional structure and then carbonized under high temperature and oxygen-limited conditions. The morphological structure and graphitization degree of biocharcoal aerogel were characterized using a scanning electron microscope and Raman spectrum. After sifting and grinding, the biocharcoal aerogel as an adsorbent was coated onto the surface of stainless steel wires. Through placing the wires into a polyetheretherketone tube, the in-tube solid-phase microextraction device was obtained. Coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography, it exhibited good extraction performance for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, then an online analytical method was established with low limits of detection (0.005-0.050 ng/mL), wide linear ranges (0.017-15 ng/mL) with superior correlation coefficients higher than 0.9990, high enrichment factors (1128-3425), and acceptable intra- and inter-day repeatabilities (relative standard deviations ≤ 6.7%, n = 3). The method was applied to detect polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in bottled water samples, environmental water samples, and soft drinks with satisfactory recoveries (83.3-120.9%). This research not only developed a new carbon aerogel but also evaluated its adsorption performance in sample preparation.
