Unique effect of bromide ion on intensification of advanced oxidation processes for pollutants removal: A systematic review

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been developed to decompose toxic pollutants to protect the aquatic environment. AOP has been considered an alternative treatment method for wastewater treatment. Bromine is present in natural waters posing toxic effects on human health and hence, its removal from drinking water sources is necessary. Of the many techniques advanced oxidation is covered in this review. This review systematically examines literature published from 1997 to April 2024, sourced from Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, and Web of Science databases, focusing on the efficacy of AOPs for pollutant removal from aqueous solutions containing bromide ions to investigate the impact of bromide ions on AOPs. Data and information extracted from each article eligible for inclusion in the review include the type of AOP, type of pollutants, and removal efficiency of AOP under the presence and absence of bromide ion. Of the 1784 documents screened, 90 studies met inclusion criteria, providing insights into various AOPs, including UV/chlorine, UV/PS, UV/H2O2, UV/catalyst, and visible light/catalyst processes. The observed impact of bromide ion presence on the efficacy of AOP processes, alongside the AOP method under scrutiny, is contingent upon various factors such as the nature of the target pollutant, catalyst type, and bromide ion concentration. These considerations are crucial in selecting the best method for removing specific pollutants under defined conditions. Challenges were encountered during result analysis included variations in experimental setups, disparities in pollutant types and concentrations, and inconsistencies in reporting AOP performance metrics. Addressing these parameters in research reports will enhance the coherence and utility of subsequent systematic reviews.

Visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of ibuprofen by Cu-doped tubular C3N4: Mechanisms, degradation pathway and DFT calculation

The copper-modified tubular carbon nitride (CTCN) with higher specific surface area and pore volume was prepared by a simple in-situ hydrolysis and self-assembly. Increased ∼4.7-fold and ∼2.3-fold degradation rate for a representative refractory water pollutant (Ibuprofen, IBP) were achieved with low-energy light source (LED, 420 ± 10 nm), as compared to graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) and tubular carbon nitride (TCN), respectively. The high efficiency of IBP removal was supported by narrow band gap (2.15 eV), high photocurrent intensity (1.10 μA/cm2) and the high surface -OH group (14.75 μg/cm3) of CTCN. According to analysis of the various reactive species in the degradation, the superoxide radical (•O2-) played a dominant role, followed by •OH and h+, responsible for IBP degradation. Furthermore, Fukui functions were employed to predict the active sites of IBP, and combined with the HPLC-MS/MS results, possible mechanisms and pathways for photocatalytic degradation were indicated. This study will lay an important scientific foundation and a possible new approach for the treatment of emerging aromatic organic pollutants in visible-light-driven heterogeneous catalytic oxidation environment.

Recent advances of piezo-catalysis and photocatalysis for efficient environmental remediation

The efficient degradation of organic pollutants in diverse environmental matrices can be achieved through the synergistic application of piezo-catalysis and photocatalysis. The focus of this study is on understanding the fundamental principles and mechanisms that govern the collaborative action of piezoelectric and photocatalytic materials. Piezoelectric nanomaterials, under mechanical stress, generate piezo-potential, which, when coupled with photocatalysts, enhances the generation and separation of charge carriers. The resulting cascade of redox reactions promotes the degradation of a wide spectrum of organic pollutants. The comprehensive investigation involves a variety of experimental techniques, including advanced spectroscopy and microscopy, to elucidate the intricate interplay between mechanical and photoinduced processes. The influence of key parameters, such as material composition, morphology, and external stimuli on the catalytic performance, is systematically explored. This study contributes to the increasing knowledge of environmental remediation and lays the foundation for the development of advanced technologies using piezo and photocatalysis for sustainable pollutant removal.

Diclofenac, ibuprofen, and paracetamol biodegradation: overconsumed non-steroidal anti-inflammatories drugs at COVID-19 pandemic

The consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have increased significantly in the last years (2020-2022), especially for patients in COVID-19 treatment. NSAIDs such as diclofenac, ibuprofen, and paracetamol are often available without restrictions, being employed without medical supervision for basic symptoms of inflammatory processes. Furthermore, these compounds are increasingly present in nature constituting complex mixtures discarded at domestic and hospital sewage/wastewater. Therefore, this review emphasizes the biodegradation of diclofenac, ibuprofen, and paracetamol by pure cultures or consortia of fungi and bacteria at in vitro, in situ, and ex situ processes. Considering the influence of different factors (inoculum dose, pH, temperature, co-factors, reaction time, and microbial isolation medium) relevant for the identification of highly efficient alternatives for pharmaceuticals decontamination, since biologically active micropollutants became a worldwide issue that should be carefully addressed. In addition, we present a quantitative bibliometric survey, which reinforces that the consumption of these drugs and consequently their impact on the environment goes beyond the epidemiological control of COVID-19.

Dissemination of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and metabolites from wastewater treatment plant to soils and agricultural crops via real-scale different agronomic practices

One of the most consumed pharmaceutical subgroups across the world is nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). However, the dissemination of these compounds to the natural environments through agronomic practices is a serious global problem. The hypothesis of this study is to reveal the transition of selected NSAIDs, paracetamol (PAR), diclofenac (DCF), ibuprofen (IBU), and naproxen (NAP) together with six main metabolites, detected in raw/treated wastewater (RWW/TWW) and sewage sludge generated in an urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to soils and agricultural crops (corn, barley, sunflower, and sugar beet) through two widely applied agronomic practices, irrigation with TWW and application of sewage sludge as soil amendment. In other words, the cycles of 10 NSAIDs have been evaluated by simultaneously monitoring their concentrations in RWW/TWW, sewage sludge, soils, and crops. It was determined that the parent compounds and detected metabolites were treated at quite higher removal efficiencies (93.4 - >99.9%) in the studied WWTP, while DCF was eliminated poorly (7.9-52.2%). However, although it changes seasonally for some compounds, it was determined that the concentrations of almost all investigated NSAIDs increased at the determined irrigation points in the discharge channel (DC) where agricultural irrigations were performed. Apart from that, DCF, NAP, and 2-hydroxyibuprofen (2-OH-IBU) were always detected in sewage sludge seasonally up to about 20.5, 11.3, and 3.7 ng/g, respectively. While 2-OH-IBU was determined as the dominant metabolite in RWW, TWW, and sewage sludge, the metabolite of 1-hydroxyibuprofen (1-OH-IBU) was determined as the dominant compound in soils. Although 1-OH-IBU was not detected in TWW and sewage sludge in any season, detecting this metabolite as a common compound in all investigated soils (up to 60.1 ng/kg) reveals that this compound is the primary transformation product of IBU in soils. It was observed that at least one of the metabolites of IBU (1-OH-IBU and/or 2-OH-IBU) was detected in all plants grown (up to 0.75 ng/g), especially during the periods when both agricultural practices were applied. In addition, the detection of 1-OH-IBU with increasing concentrations from root to shoots in corn grown as a result of both agronomic practices shows that this compound has a high translocation potential in the corn plant. Apart from this, it was determined that PAR was detected in corn (up to 43.3 ng/kg) and barley (up to 16.8 ng/kg) within the scope of irrigation with TWW, and NAP was detected in sugar beet (up to 11.2 ng/kg) through sewage sludge application.

Efficiency of Ag3PO4/TiO2 as a heterogeneous catalyst under solar and visible light for humic acid removal from aqueous solution

Nowadays, the presence of humic acid (HA) in water sources is highly regarded due to the production of extremely harmful byproducts such as trihalomethanes. In this study, the effectiveness of an Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ catalyst produced by in situ precipitation as a heterogeneous catalyst for the degradation of humic acid in the existence of visible and solar light was evaluated. The Ag₃PO₄/TiO₂ catalyst's structure was characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), after which the catalyst dosage, HA concentration, and pH parameters were adjusted. After a 20-min reaction, the highest HA degradation of 88.2% and 85.9% in presence of solar light and visible light were attained at the ideal operating conditions of 0.2 g/L catalyst, 5 mg/L HA, and pH 3, respectively. It was discovered that, based on kinetic models, the degradation of HA matched both Langmuir-Hinshelwood and pseudo-first-order kinetics at concentrations of 5 to 30 mg/L (R² > 0.8). The Langmuir-Hinshelwood model had surface reaction rate constants (K_c) of 0.729 mg/L.min and adsorption equilibrium constants (K_L-H) of 0.036 L/mg. Eventually, a real-water investigation into the process' effectiveness revealed that, under ideal circumstances, the catalyst had a reasonable HA removal efficiency of 56%.

Synthesis of cerium oxide embedded perovskite type bismuth ferrite nanocomposites for sonophotocatalysis of aqueous micropollutant ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is potentially toxic and carcinogenic for freshwater ecosystems and poses a serious threat to human health by affecting kidney function. The present study focused on the sunlight-controlled degradation of ibuprofen from water using a novel magnetically separable cerium oxide-embedded bismuth ferrite heterostructure. Catalysts were synthesized by solvothermal and co-precipitation methods and characterized by X-ray diffractometry, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis optical absorption spectroscopy, and nitrogen adsorption. This study investigated the effect of photocatalysis, sonolysis, sonophotolysis, and sonophotocatalysis on the degradation of ibuprofen in water. Pseudo-first-order and second-order kinetics were applied to evaluate the rate of reaction for ibuprofen degradation. The addition of 5% CeO₂ to the BiFeO₃ significantly increased the surface area and pore volume of bismuth ferrite, which enhanced their photocatalytic degradation efficiency by 2.28 times in terms of ibuprofen mineralization. Sonolysis treatment alone and in combination with photolysis led to the degradation of ibuprofen, but with the formation of intermediate products. Positive synergy was observed when sonolysis was combined with photocatalysis in terms of the mineralization of ibuprofen and the degradation of intermediates along with their parent compound. It was proposed that, compared to photocatalytic mineralization, the ultrasound-assisted advanced oxidation process resulted in the conversion of ibuprofen to its mineralization products.

Marine bacteria-mediated abiotic-biotic coupling degradation mechanism of ibuprofen

Knowledge on the behavior and fate of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) is poorly explored in marine aphotic environment. In this study, the degradation mechanism of a typical PPCPs-ibuprofen (IBP) by a ubiquitous marine Pseudoalteromonas sp. was investigated based on transcriptome and key enzymes analysis. More importantly, a novel enzymatic-nonenzymatic coupling degradation mechanism was uncovered for the first time, namely, the degradation of IBP was firstly initiated by extracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), then the intermediate (e.g.4-ethylresorcinol) was further degraded by intracellular enzymes. It was showed that biogenic •OH, O₂^•-and H₂O₂ were responsible for extracellular nonenzymatic degradation, in which IBP was degraded to 4-ethylresorcinol through hydrogenation, isobutyl moiety cleavage, oxidation and decarboxylation. 4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase, homogentisate 1,2-dioxygenase, long-chain acyl-CoA synthetase, acetyl-CoA acyltransferase and enoyl-CoA hydratase were identified to be involved in intracellular degradation, leading 4-ethylresorcinol cracked and eventually mineralized. Ultimately, this novel degradation mechanism was demonstrated to be amino acids-driven through KEGG enrichment analysis and experimental data. Overall, our work uncovered a yet undiscovered abiotic-biotic coupling degradation mechanism in PPCPs biotransformation, thereby updating the conventional concept that contaminants transformation is solely accomplished by enzymes or non-enzymes, which can also provide new insights into PPCPs environmental behavior and fate.

Efficient Activation of Peroxymonosulfate by Cobalt Supported Used Resin Based Carbon Ball Catalyst for the Degradation of Ibuprofen

The extensive use of ibuprofen (IBU) and other pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) causes them widely to exist in nature and be frequently detected in water bodies. Advanced catalytic oxidation processes (AOPs) are often used as an efficient way to degrade them, and the research on heterogeneous catalysts has become a hot spot in the field of AOPs. Among transitional metal-based catalysts, metal cobalt has been proved to be an effective element in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to produce strong oxidizing components. In this study, the used D001 resin served as the matrix material and through simple impregnation and calcination, cobalt was successfully fixed on the carbon ball in the form of cobalt sulfide. When the catalyst was used to activate persulfate to degrade IBU, it was found that under certain reaction conditions, the degradation rate in one hour could exceed 70%, which was far higher than that of PMS and resin carbon balls alone. Here, we discussed the effects of catalyst loading, PMS concentration, pH value and temperature on IBU degradation. Through quenching experiments, it was found that SO4− and ·OH played a major role in the degradation process. The material has the advantages of simple preparation, low cost and convenient recovery, as well as realizing the purpose of reuse and degrading organic pollutants efficiently.

A review on synergistic coexisting pollutants for efficient photocatalytic reaction in wastewater remediation

With the tremendous development of the economy and industry, the pollution of water is becoming more serious due to the excessive chemical wastes that need to remove thru reduction or oxidation reactions. Simultaneous removal of dual pollutants via photocatalytic redox reaction has been tremendously explored in the last five years due to effective decontamination of pollutants compared to a single pollutants system. In a photocatalysis mechanism, the holes in the valence band can remarkably promote the oxidation of a pollutant. At the same time, photoexcited electrons are also consumed for the reduction reaction. The synergistic between the reduction and oxidation inhibits the recombination of electron-hole pairs extending their lifetime. In this review, the binary pollutants that selectively removed via photocatalysis reduction or oxidation are classified according to heavy metal-organic pollutant (HM/OP), heavy metal-heavy metal (HM/HM) and organic-organic pollutants (OP/OP). The intrinsic between the pollutants was explained in three different mechanisms including inhibition of electron-hole recombination, ligand to metal charge transfer and electrostatic attraction. Several strategies for the enhancement of this treatment method which are designation of catalysts, pH of mixed pollutants and addition of additive were discussed. This review offers a recent perspective on the development of photocatalysis system for industrial applications.

Cooperative denitrification in biocathodes under low carbon to nitrogen ratio conditions coupled with simultaneous degradation of ibuprofen in photoanodes

A two-chamber microbial photoelectrochemical cell (MPEC) with a denitrification biocathode and an α-Fe₂O₃/P3HT photoanode was established aimed to enhance nitrate removal from wastewater of low carbon sources and achieve simultaneous ibuprofen degradation. The results demonstrated that the average removal of NO₃^--N in the biocathode reached 96.56 ± 0.72% when the COD/NO₃^--N was 0.75, and the relative contributions of heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrification were 21.47% and 78.53%, respectively. When there was no organic source in the influent, the maximum removal of NO₃^--N was less than 45%. High-throughput sequencing revealed that both heterotrophic bacteria, such as Bacillus, and autotrophic bacteria (e.g., Thermomonas and Hydrogenophaga) dominated in the cooperative denitrification biocathode. Moreover, the functional gene analysis showed that the abundance of genes related to denitrification was highest in the cooperative denitrification biocathode. In addition, the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of ibuprofen in the anode chamber attained 67.95% ± 0.97%.

g-C3N4 induced acceleration of Fe3+/Fe2+ cycles for enhancing metronidazole degradation in Fe3+/peroxymonosulfate process under visible light

In this study, a Fe³⁺/g-C₃N₄ hybrid catalyst system was proposed to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the metronidazole (MNZ) photocatalytic degradation. The two catalysts, Fe³⁺ and g-C₃N₄, exhibited an obvious synergistic effect in the photocatalytic degradation process. When 1 mM PMS, 0.04 mM Fe³⁺ and 0.05 g L^-1 g-C₃N₄ were applied, the rate constant of the Fe³⁺/g-C₃N₄/PMS/LED process at 0.07288 min^-1 is around 3.6 to 6.8 times faster than that of Fe³⁺/PMS/LED and g-C₃N₄/PMS/LED processes at 0.0198 and 0.01076 min^-1, respectively. Under visible light, electron transfer from photo-activated g-C₃N₄ to Fe³⁺, resulting in the continuous regeneration of Fe²⁺ in the system, which ensures non-stopping production of radicals for MNZ degradation. UV-visible spectra were used to confirm the regeneration of Fe²⁺. In addition, EPR tests were used to identify the reactive oxygen species involved in the reaction system. Typically, the effects of various operation parameters, including the catalyst dosage, PMS dosage, initial concentration of MNZ and initial pH were examined. This work provided a new idea of promoting pollutant degradation by accelerating Fe³⁺/Fe²⁺ redox through semiconductor, which could help to use the catalyst more effectively for wastewater treatment and/or chemical industries.

Degradation of Ibuprofen by the Electro/Fe3+/Peroxydisulfate Process: Reactive Kinetics, Degradation Products and Mechanism

Ibuprofen (IBU), a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is one of the most widely used and frequently detected pharmaceuticals and personal care products in water bodies. This study examined the IBU degradation in aquatic solutions via ferric ion activated peroxydisulfate (PDS) coupled with electro-oxidation (EC/Fe3+/PDS). The degradation mechanisms involved three synergistic reactions in the EC/Fe3+/PDS system, including: (1) the electro-oxidation; (2) SO4•− generated from the activation of PDS by ferrous ions formed via cathodic reduction; (3) SO4•− generated from the electron transfer reaction. The radical scavenging experiments indicated that SO4•− and •OH dominated the oxidation process. The effects of the applied current density, PDS concentration, Fe3+ dosage, initial IBU concentration and initial pH as well as inorganic anions and humic acid on the degradation efficiency, were studied, and the degradation process of IBU followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. About 99.37% of IBU was removed in 60 min ((Fe3+ concentration) = 2.0 mM, (PDS concentration) = 12 mM, (initial IBU concentration) = 30 mg/L, current density = 15 mA/cm2, initial pH = 3). Finally, seven intermediate compounds were identified and probable IBU degradation pathways in the EC/Fe3+/PDS system were speculated.

Photocatalytic degradation of ibuprofen on S-doped BiOBr

Doping heterogeneous atoms into BiOX is recognized as an effective method to improve its photocatalytic activity. Here, S-doped BiOBr (S-BiOBr) was synthesized via a solvothermal method in the absence of water, which is supposed to substitute O as S^2- in the lattice. This material is firstly used for the visible-light-driven degradation of ibuprofen, a model anti-inflammatory drug. The degradation efficiency of S-BiOBr is much higher than that of pure BiOBr. The degradation kinetic constant for S-BiOBr (2.48 × 10^-2 min^-1) is about 3 times as high as that of pure BiOBr (0.83 × 10^-2 min^-1). It is found that S-doping tunes the band structure of BiOBr, leading to a narrower band gap and thus higher utilization efficiency of visible light. The degradation of ibuprofen on S-BiOBr can be attributed to the generation of H₂O₂ and OH radicals. OH radical plays a synergistic role along with holes in the photocatalytic degradation process, which is supposed to be better than the reported single hole- or superoxide-dominant reaction. This work reveals a previously unrecognized and more efficient method for the degradation of organic contaminants on BiOBr.

Biodegradation of L-Valine Alkyl Ester Ibuprofenates by Bacterial Cultures

Nowadays, we consume very large amounts of medicinal substances. Medicines are used to cure, halt, or prevent disease, ease symptoms, or help in the diagnosis of illnesses. Some medications are used to treat pain. Ibuprofen is one of the most popular drugs in the world (it ranks third). This drug enters our water system through human pharmaceutical use. In this article, we describe and compare the biodegradation of ibuprofen and ibuprofen derivatives-salts of L-valine alkyl esters. Biodegradation studies of ibuprofen and its derivatives have been carried out with activated sludge. The structure modifications we received were aimed at increasing the biodegradation of the drug used. The influence of the alkyl chain length of the ester used in the biodegradation of the compound was also verified. The biodegradation results correlated with the lipophilic properties (log P).
