Source apportionment of PM2.5 and sulfate formation during the COVID-19 lockdown in a coastal city of southeast China

Short-term effects of air pollutants and meteorological factors on outpatients with allergic airway disease in Ningbo, China, 2015-2021

OBJECTIVES

The allergic airway disease, such as allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, asthma, is a general term of a range of inflammatory disorders affecting the upper and lower airways and lung parenchyma. This study aimed to investigate the short-term effects of air pollutants and meteorological factors on AAD-related daily outpatient visits.

STUDY DESIGN

An ecological study.

METHODS

Data on outpatient visits due to AAD (n = 4,554,404) were collected from the platform of the Ningbo Health Information from January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2021. A Quasi-Poisson generalized additive regression model was established to analyze the lag effects of air pollution on daily outpatient visits for AAD. Restricted cubic spline functions were used to explore the potential non-linear relationships between air pollutants and meteorological and daily outpatient visits for AAD.

RESULTS

PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, or CO were associated with daily outpatient visits for AAD, and there was a significant increasing trend in the cumulative lag effects. SO2 had the largest effect at Lag07, with a 25.3% (95% CI: 21.6%-29.0%) increase in AAD for every 10 μg/m3 increase in exposure concentration. Subgroup analysis showed that the 0-18 years old age group had the strongest effects, especially for AR, and all effects were stronger in the cold season.

CONCLUSIONS

Given that patients aged 0-18 are more susceptible to environmental changes, protective measures specifically for children should be taken during dry and cold weather conditions with poor air quality.

Source apportionment of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), and their associated long-term health risks in a major European city

Many studies have drawn attention to the associations of oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) with harmful health effects, advocating for their systematic monitoring alongside simple PAHs to better understand the aerosol carcinogenic potential in urban areas. To address this need, this study conducted an extensive PM2.5 sampling campaign in Athens, Greece, at the Thissio Supersite of the National Observatory of Athens, from December 2018 to July 2021, aiming to characterize the levels and variability of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), perform source apportionment, and assess health risk. Cumulative OPAH concentrations (Σ-OPAHs) were in the same range as Σ-PAHs (annual average 4.2 and 5.6 ng m-3, respectively). They exhibited a common seasonal profile with enhanced levels during the heating seasons, primarily attributed to residential wood burning (RWB). The episodic impact of biomass burning was also observed during a peri-urban wildfire event in May 2021, when PAH and OPAH concentrations increased by a factor of three compared to the monthly average. The study period also included the winter 2020-2021 COVID-19 lockdown, during which PAH and OPAH levels decreased by >50 % compared to past winters. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) source apportionment, based on a carbonaceous aerosol speciation dataset, identified PAC sources related to RWB, local traffic (gasoline vehicles) and urban traffic (including diesel emissions), as well as an impact of regional organic aerosol. Despite its seasonal character, RWB accounted for nearly half of Σ-PAH and over two-thirds of Σ-OPAH concentrations. Using the estimated source profiles and contributions, the source-specific carcinogenic potency of the studied PACs was calculated, revealing that almost 50 % was related to RWB. These findings underscore the urgent need to regulate domestic biomass burning at a European level, which can provide concrete benefits for improving urban air quality, towards the new stricter EU standards, and reducing long-term health effects.

Windows of sensitivity for risk of adverse birth outcomes related to gestational PM2.5 exposure: Evidence from a natural experiment

While numerous studies have associated maternal exposure to PM2.5 with adverse birth outcomes, findings remain inconsistent and difficult to generalize. We aimed to investigate the causal relationship and window of sensitivity between gestational exposure to PM2.5 and birth outcomes. We leveraged high-resolution satellite data to quantify gestational PM2.5 exposure at the individual level, along with a combined model to determine daily relative risks (RRs) of birth outcomes in COVID-19 prelockdown and lockdown groups. RRs between the two groups were further compared using a longitudinal pre-post non-experimental design to identify sensitivity windows of adverse birth outcomes. A total of 73,781 pregnant women from the COVID-19 prelockdown group and 6267 pregnant women from the lockdown group were included for analysis. The daily mean PM2.5 concentrations in the lockdown group decreased by 21.7% compared to the prelockdown group. During the first trimester, every 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 significantly increased the risk of congenital abnormalities of major organs such as the cardiovascular system, gastrointestinal tract, nervous system, urinary system, and respiratory system. Moreover, gestational exposure to PM2.5 during the first trimester was associated with higher risks of premature delivery and term low birth weight. While PM2.5 exposure during the second trimester was positively correlated with macrosomia. Gestational exposure to PM2.5 is associated with increased risks of various adverse birth outcomes with specific sensitive windows. We demonstrated that gestational exposure to PM2.5 increased risks of various adverse birth outcomes with specific window of sensitivity through the natural experiment design. Our findings underscore the urgent need for policies and initiatives targeting PM2.5 reduction, especially during critical periods of pregnancy.

The Variation in Chemical Composition and Source Apportionment of PM2.5 before, during, and after COVID-19 Restrictions in Zhengzhou, China

Despite significant improvements in air quality during and after COVID-19 restrictions, haze continued to occur in Zhengzhou afterwards. This paper compares ionic compositions and sources of PM2.5 before (2019), during (2020), and after (2021) the restrictions to explore the reasons for the haze. The average concentration of PM2.5 decreased by 28.5% in 2020 and 27.9% in 2021, respectively, from 102.49 μg m-3 in 2019. The concentration of secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs) was 51.87 μg m-3 in 2019, which decreased by 3.1% in 2020 and 12.8% in 2021. In contrast, the contributions of SIAs to PM2.5 increased from 50.61% (2019) to 68.6% (2020) and 61.2% (2021). SIAs contributed significantly to PM2.5 levels in 2020-2021. Despite a 22~62% decline in NOx levels in 2020-2021, the increased O3 caused a similar NO3- concentration (20.69~23.00 μg m-3) in 2020-2021 to that (22.93 μg m-3) in 2019, hindering PM2.5 reduction in Zhengzhou. Six PM2.5 sources, including secondary inorganic aerosols, industrial emissions, coal combustion, biomass burning, soil dust, and traffic emissions, were identified by the positive matrix factorization model in 2019-2021. Compared to 2019, the reduction in PM2.5 from the secondary aerosol source in 2020 and 2021 was small, and the contribution of secondary aerosol to PM2.5 increased by 13.32% in 2020 and 12.94% in 2021. In comparison, the primary emissions, including biomass burning, traffic, and dust, were reduced by 29.71% in 2020 and 27.7% in 2021. The results indicated that the secondary production did not significantly contribute to the PM2.5 decrease during and after the COVID-19 restrictions. Therefore, it is essential to understand the formation of secondary aerosols under high O3 and low precursor gases to mitigate air pollution in the future.

Trace elements and microbial community composition associated with airborne PM2.5 in wetlands: A case study in Tablas de Daimiel National Park

Tablas de Daimiel National Park (TDNP) is one of the most important wetlands in the Iberian Peninsula. Due to its location near various cities and new industries focused on agricultural waste revalorization, we investigated concurrently the concentrations of particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) mass, trace element composition, and associated microbial communities (bacteria and fungi) during a year-long study. The goal of this study was to explore the dependencies among these physicochemical and microbiological parameters on a seasonal time scale. Additionally, we assessed meteorological conditions and back trajectories to shed light on atmospheric mechanisms and sources related to these elements. We found the variability of PM2.5 to be influenced by local meteorological parameters. Through the analysis of crustal enrichment factors (EFs), bivariate correlations, and air mass patterns, we determined that soil resuspension was the primary contributor to elevated metal concentrations in PM2.5 within the park, followed by other minor sources, such as traffic emissions and Sahara dust intrusions. The measured metal levels were used to calculate the ecological risk in the area, resulting in a low ecological risk index (RI) of 52. Shifts in microbial community structure were observed to be mainly driven by changes in air temperature and Cu concentration. The results from this study contribute to a better understanding of the environmental dynamics in TDNP. Taken together, our findings will aid in the development of effective strategies for its conservation and management.

Chemical composition, sources, and health risks of PM2.5 in small cities with different urbanization during 2020 Chinese Spring Festival

To investigate the impact of quarantine measures and fireworks banning policy on chemical composition and sources of PM2.5 and associated health risks in small, less developed cities, we sampled in Guigang (GG), Shaoyang (SY), and Tianshui (TS), located in eastern, central, and north-western China, in 2020 Spring Festival (CSF). Mass concentration, carbonaceous, metals, and WSIIs of PM2.5 were analyzed. The study found high levels of PM2.5 pollution with the average concentration of 168.05 µg/m3 in TS, 134.59 µg/m3 in SY, and 125.71 µg/m3 in GG. A negative correlation was found between the urbanization level and PM2.5 pollution. Lockdown measures reduced PM2.5 mass and industrial elements. In non-control period (NCP), combustion and fireworks were the major sources of PM2.5 in GG and TS, and industry source accounted for a significant proportion in the relatively more urbanized SY. Whereas on control period (CP), soil dust, combustion, and road dust were the main source in GG, secondary aerosols dominated in SY and TS. Our health risk assessment showed unacceptable levels of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks over the study areas, despite lockdown measures reducing health risks. As and Cr(VI), as the major pollutants, their associated sources, industry sources, and fireworks sources, posed the greatest risk to people at the sampling sites after exposure to PM2.5. This work supports the improvement of PM2.5 control strategies in small Chinese cities during the CSF.

Distinct responses of airborne abundant and rare microbial communities to atmospheric changes associated with Chinese New Year

Airborne microorganisms, including pathogens, would change with surrounding environments and become issues of global concern due to their threats to human health. Microbial communities typically contain a few abundant but many rare species. However, how the airborne abundant and rare microbial communities respond to environmental changes is still unclear, especially at hour scale. Here, we used a sequencing approach based on bacterial 16S rRNA genes and fungal ITS2 regions to investigate the high time-resolved dynamics of airborne bacteria and fungi and to explore the responses of abundant and rare microbes to the atmospheric changes. Our results showed that air pollutants and microbial communities were significantly affected by human activities related to the Chinese New Year (CNY). Before CNY, significant hour-scale changes in both abundant and rare subcommunities were observed, while only abundant bacterial subcommunity changed with hour time series during CNY. Air pollutants and meteorological parameters explained 61.5%-74.2% variations of abundant community but only 13.3%-21.6% variations of rare communities. These results suggested that abundant species were more sensitive to environmental changes than rare taxa. Stochastic processes predominated in the assembly of abundant communities, but deterministic processes determined the assembly of rare communities. Potential bacterial pathogens during CNY were the highest, suggesting an increased health risk of airborne microbes during CNY. Overall, our findings highlighted the "holiday effect" of CNY on airborne microbes and expanded the current understanding of the ecological mechanisms and health risks of microbes in a changing atmosphere.

Source apportionment of PM2.5 before and after COVID-19 lockdown in an urban-industrial area of the Lisbon metropolitan area, Portugal

The lockdowns held due to the COVID-19 pandemic conducted to changes in air quality. This study aimed to understand the variability of PM_2.5 levels and composition in an urban-industrial area of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and to identify the contribution of the different sources. The composition of PM_2.5 was assessed for 24 elements (by PIXE), secondary inorganic ions and black carbon. The PM_2.5 mean concentration for the period (December 2019 to November 2020) was 13 ± 11 μg.m^-3. The most abundant species in PM_2.5 were BC (19.9%), SO₄ ^2- (15.4%), NO₃ ^- (11.6%) and NH₄ ⁺ (5.3%). The impact of the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic on the PM levels was found by comparison with the previous six years. The concentrations of all the PM_2.5 components, except Al, Ba, Ca, Si and SO₄ ^2-, were significantly higher in the winter/pre-confinement than in post-confinement period. A total of seven sources were identified by Positive Matrix Factorisation (PMF): soil, secondary sulphate, fuel-oil combustion, sea, vehicle non-exhaust, vehicle exhaust, and industry. Sources were greatly influenced by the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with vehicle exhaust showing the sharpest decrease. Secondary sulphate predominated in summer/post-confinement. PM_2.5 levels and composition also varied with the types of air mass trajectories.

Impact of primary emission variations on secondary inorganic aerosol formation: Prospective from COVID-19 lockdown in a typical northern China city

Hourly observations in northern China city of Taiyuan were performed to compare secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) reaction mechanisms, and emission effects on SIA during the pre-lock and COVID-19 lock days. Emission control implemented and meteorological conditions during lock days both caused beneficial impact on air quality. NO₂ showed the highest decrease ratio of -49.5%, while the relative fraction of NO₃^- in PM_2.5 increased the most (2.7%). Source apportionment revealed the top three contributors to PM_2.5 were secondary formation (SF), coal combustion (CC), and vehicle exhaust (VE) during both pre-lock and lock days. EC _lock/pre were all lower than 1, suggesting the overall reduction of primary emissions during lock days, while the higher ratio of (SIA/EC) _lock/pre (1.01-1.36) indicated the enhanced secondary formation in lock days. The ratio of SIA of pollution to clean days during lock periods considerably higher by 23.7% compared with that in pre-lock periods, which was indicated SIA secondary formation was more pronounced and contributed great to pollution days in lock periods though secondary formation existed in pre-lock and lock periods. Enhanced secondary formation of NO₃^- and SO₄^2- during lock days might be mainly due to the increased in aqueous and gas-phase reactions, respectively. Except for SF, high contribution of VE and CC were also important for high SIA concentration in pre-lock and lock days, respectively. The decreased contribution of VE weakens its contribution to SIA formation, indicating the effectiveness of VE emission control, as confirmed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study highlights the aqueous and gas-phase reactions for nitrate and sulfate, respectively, which contributed to heavy pollution, as well as indicated the important role of VE on SIA formation, suggesting the urgent need to further strengthen controls on vehicle emissions.

COVID-19 pandemic, port congestion, and air quality: Evidence from China

The emergency of COVID-19 leads to almost all unnecessary activities being banned because of city lockdowns, which results in the economy and human mobility being strictly restricted. While affecting economic development, it has brought some environmental benefits. As a critical link to collection and distribution, ports have been deeply impacted by COVID-19, including quarantine time and operational efficiency, and even cause unexpected port congestion. This study empirically examines the relationship between the COVID-19 pandemic, port congestion and air quality in Chinese port cities using classical and system panel models. We find that the COVID-19 pandemic and port congestion significantly influence air quality in port cities. Managerial implications include the ensuring of port workers' shifts, the unblocking of port logistics, and the cooperation between transportation, customs, and quarantine departments, which can reduce the time of ships at berths and improve the air quality in port cities.

Impact of fireworks burning on air quality during the Spring Festival in 2021-2022 in Linyi, a central city in the North China Plain

The management of fireworks has been strengthened during the Spring Festival in 2022 compared with that in 2021 in Linyi, a central city in the North China Plain. Online measurements of the chemical components of PM_2.5 were conducted during the Spring Festival in 2021-2022 to assess the influence of fireworks burning (FB) on air quality. Remarkable achievements have been made in improving air quality during FB period (FBP) in 2021-2022 attributing to the stringent regional emission reduction measures, fireworks control, and favorable meteorological conditions with the concentrations of PM_2.5, water-soluble ions, and carbonaceous aerosols decreasing by 73.6%, 78.8%, and 73.5%, respectively. The PM_2.5 concentrations increased by 96.3% during FBP compared with those during non-FB period (NFBP) in 2021, while the opposite phenomenon was observed in 2022 with PM_2.5 concentrations decreasing by 56.2% because of the favorable meteorological condition during FBP in 2022. As indicators of FB, the Cl^-, K⁺, and Mg²⁺ concentrations showed an increasing trend during FBP compared with that during NFBP, both in 2021 and 2022, but had little effect on other components. The contribution of FB to PM_2.5 decreased from 68.4% in 2021 to 15.7% in 2022 based on the relative ratio method, indicating the various measures conducted by all districts and counties in Linyi helped achieve near zero fireworks emissions by 2022. Besides, the contribution of FB to PM_2.5 showed a straight-line upward trend from 19:00 on New Year's Eve, reached its peak (76.1%) at 3:00 on Lunar New Year's Day, while the highest value was only 35.0% during FBP in 2022, indicating the implementation of fireworks ban measures in Linyi achieved a good effect on pollution peak cutting. This study has emphasized the necessity of FB restricting during special holidays.

Variation of pollution sources and health effects on air pollution before and during COVID-19 pandemic in Linfen, Fenwei Plain

Stringent pollution control measures are generally applied to improve air quality, especially in the Spring Festival in China. Meanwhile, human activities are reduced significantly due to nationwide lockdown measures to curtail the COVID-19 spreading in 2020. Herein, to better understand the influence of control measures and meteorology on air pollution, this study compared the variation of pollution source and their health risk during the 2019 and 2020 Spring Festival in Linfen, China. Results revealed that the average concentration of PM_2.5 in 2020 decreased by 39.0% when compared to the 2019 Spring Festival. Organic carbon (OC) and SO₄^2- were the primary contributor to PM_2.5 with the value of 19.5% (21.1%) and 23.5% (25.5%) in 2019 (2020) Spring Festival, respectively. Based on the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, six pollution sources of PM_2.5 were indicated. Vehicle emissions (VE) had the maximum reduction in pollution source concentration (28.39 μg· m^-3), followed by dust fall (DF) (11.47 μg· m^-3), firework burning (FB) (10.39 μg· m^-3), coal combustion (CC) (8.54 μg· m^-3), and secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) (3.95 μg· m^-3). However, the apportionment concentration of biomass burning (BB) increased by 78.7%, indicating a significant increase in biomass combustion under control measures. PAHs-lifetime lung cancer risk (ILCR) of VE, CC, FB, BB, and DF, decreased by 44.6%, 43.2%, 34.1%, 21.3%, and 2.0%, respectively. Additionally, the average contribution of meteorological conditions on PM_2.5 in 2020 increased by 20.21% compared to 2019 Spring Festival, demonstrating that meteorological conditions played a crucial role in located air pollution. This study revealed that the existing control measures in Linfen were efficient to reduce air pollution and health risk, whereas more BB emissions were worthy of further attention. Furthermore, the result was conducive to developing more effective control measures and putting more attention into unfavorable meteorological conditions in Linfen.

Pollution characteristics and sources of environmentally persistent free radicals and oxidation potential in fine particulate matter related to city lockdown (CLD) in Xi'an, China

The impact of COVID-19 control on air quality have been prevalent for the past two years, however few studies have explored the toxicity of atmospheric particulate matter during the epidemic control. Therefore, this research highlights the characteristics and sources of oxidative potential (OP) and the new health risk substances environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) in comparison to city lockdown (CLD) with early days of 2019-2020. Daily particulate matter (PM_2.5) samples were collected from January 14 to February 3, 2020, with the same period during 2019 in Xi'an city. The results indicated that the average concentration of PM_2.5 decreased by 48% during CLD. Concentrations of other air pollutants and components, such as PM₁₀, NO₂, SO₂, WSIs, OC and EC were also decreased by 22%, 19%, 2%, 17%, 6%, and 4% respectively during the CLD, compared to the same period in 2019. Whereas only O₃ increased by 30% during CLD. The concentrations of EPFRs in PM_2.5 was considerably lower than in 2019, which decreased by 12% during CLD. However, the OP level was increased slightly during CLD. Moreover, both EPFRs/PM and DTTv/PM did not decrease or even increase significantly, manifesting that the toxicity of particulate matter has not been reduced by more gains during the CLD. Based on PMF analysis, during the epidemic period, the contribution of traffic emission is significantly reduced, while EPFRs and DTTv increased, which consist of significant O₃ and secondary aerosols. This research leads to able future research on human health effect of EPFRs and oxidative potential and can be also used to formulate the majors to control EPFRs and OP emissions, suggest the need for further studies on the secondary processing of EPFRs and OP during the lockdown period in Xi'an. .The COVID-19 lockdown had a significant impact on both social and economic aspects. The city lockdown, however, had a positive impact on the environment and improved air quality, however, no significant health benefits were observed in Xi'an, China.

Association between air pollution and hospital admissions for chronic respiratory disease in people aged over 65 years: a time series analysis in Ningbo, China, 2015-2017

PURPOSE

To provide essential information of environmental triggers leading to CRD.

METHODS

We investigated the short-term effects of ambient air pollutants on CRD-related hospitalizations in people aged ≥ 65 years in Ningbo. Data on 23,610 cases of CRD requiring hospitalization were collected from January 2015 to August 2017. After adjusting for temporal trends, seasonality, meteorological conditions, day of week (DOW), and public holidays, we used generalized additive Poisson distribution models to calculate the excess risks (ERs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) of CRD related hospitalizations.

RESULTS

Our results showed that fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), inhalable particulate matter (PM₁₀), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and carbon monoxide (CO) were associated with CRD-related hospitalizations in people aged ≥ 65 years. We observed that each 10 μg/m³ increase (except for each 0.1 mg/m³ increase in CO) in the concentration of air pollutants, the percentage of CRD-related hospitalizations due to PM_2.5, PM₁₀, and SO₂ exposure at lag 07, NO₂ exposure at lag 03, and CO exposure at lag 0 increased by 2.13% (95% CI: 0.55%, 3.74%), 1.76% (95% CI: 0.70%, 2.83%), 8.24% (95% CI: 0.92%, 16.09%), 2.16% (95% CI: 0.26%, 4.05%), and 1.19% (95% CI: 0.26%, 2.12%), respectively. In addition, we found stronger effects of particulate matter in 75-84 years age group, on warmer days, and in asthmatics.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, air pollution may have adverse effects on CRD-related hospitalizations among people aged ≥ 65 years in Ningbo. Therefore, public health measures should be taken to improve air quality.

Unexpected rise of atmospheric secondary aerosols from biomass burning during the COVID-19 lockdown period in Hangzhou, China

After the global outbreak of COVID-19, the Chinese government took many measures to control the spread of the virus. The measures led to a reduction in anthropogenic emissions nationwide. Data from a single particle aerosol mass spectrometer in an eastern Chinese megacity (Hangzhou) before, during, and after the COVID-19 lockdown (5 January to February 29, 2020) was used to understand the effect lockdown had on atmospheric particles. The collected single particle mass spectra were clustered into eight categories. Before the lockdown, the proportions of particles ranked in order of: EC (57.9%) < K-SN (13.6%) < Fe-rich (10.2%) < ECOC (6.7%) < K-Na (6.6%) < OC (3.4%) < K-Pb (1.0%) < K-Al (0.7%). During the lockdown period, the EC and Fe-rich particles decreased by 42.8% and 93.2% compared to before lockdown due to reduced vehicle exhaust and industrial activity. By contrast, the K-SN and K-Na particles containing biomass burning tracers increased by 155.2% and 45.2% during the same time, respectively. During the lockdown, the proportions of particles ranked in order of: K-SN (39.7%) < EC (38.1%) < K-Na (11.0%) < ECOC (7.7%) < OC (1.2%) < K-Pb (0.9%) < Fe-rich (0.8%) < K-Al (0.6%). Back trajectory analysis indicated that both inland (Anhui and Shandong provinces) and marine transported air masses may have contributed to the increase in K-SN and K-Na particles during the lockdown, and that increased number of fugitive combustion points (i.e., household fuel, biomass combustion) was a contributing factor. Therefore, the results imply that regional synergistic control measures on fugitive combustion emissions are needed to ensure good air quality.

Impacts of COVID-19 on air quality in mid-eastern China: An insight into meteorology and emissions

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) spread rapidly worldwide in the first half of 2020. Stringent national lockdown policies imposed by China to prevent the spread of the virus reduced anthropogenic emissions and improved air quality. A weather research and forecasting model coupled with chemistry was applied to evaluate the impact of meteorology and emissions on air quality during the COVID-19 outbreak (from January 23 to February 29, 2020) in mid-eastern China. The results show that air pollution episodes still occurred on polluted days and accounted for 31.6%-60.5% of the total number of outbreak days in mid-eastern China from January 23 to February 29, 2020. However, anthropogenic emissions decreased significantly, indicating that anthropogenic emission reduction cannot completely offset the impact of unfavorable meteorological conditions on air quality. Favorable meteorological conditions in 2019 improved the overall air quality for a COVID-19 outbreak in 2019 instead of 2020. PM_2.5 concentrations decreased by 4.2%-29.2% in Beijing, Tianjin, Shijiazhuang, and Taiyuan, and increased by 6.1%-11.5% in Jinan and Zhengzhou. PM_2.5 concentrations increased by 10.9%-20.5% without the COVID-19 outbreak of 2020 in mid-eastern China, and the frequency of polluted days increased by 5.3%-18.4%. Source apportionment of PM_2.5 during the COVID-19 outbreak showed that industry and residential emissions were the dominant PM_2.5 contributors (32.7%-49.6% and 26.0%-44.5%, respectively) followed by agriculture (18.7%-24.0%), transportation (7.7%-15.5%), and power (4.1%-5.9%). In Beijing, industrial and residential contributions to PM_2.5 concentrations were lower (32.7%) and higher (44.5%), respectively, than in other cities (38.7%-49.6% for industry and 26.0%-36.2% for residential). Therefore, enhancing regional cooperation and implementing a united air pollution control are effective emission mitigation measures for future air quality improvement, especially the development of new technologies for industrial and cooking fumes.

Assessment of COVID-19 pandemic effects on ship pollutant emissions in major international seaports

This study aims to investigate the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic effects and associated restrictive rules on ship activities and pollutant emissions (CO2, SOX, NOX, PM, CO, CH4) in four major seaports, namely the Ports of Singapore, Long Beach, Los Angeles, and Hamburg. We used 2019 as the baseline year to show the business-as-usual emission and compared with the estimated quantity during the July 2020-July 2021 pandemic period. We also project future ship emissions from August 2021-August 2022 to illustrate two potential port congestion scenarios due to COVID-19. The results show that the ship emissions in all four ports generally increased by an average of 79% because of the prolonged turnaround time in port. Importantly, majority of ship emissions occurred during the extended hoteling time at berth and anchorage areas as longer operational times were needed due to pandemic-related delays, with increases ranging from 27 to 123% in the total emissions across ports. The most affected shipping segments were the container ships and dry bulk carriers which the total emissions of all pollutants increased by an average of 94-142% compared with 2019. Overall, the results of this study provide a comprehensive review of the ship emission outlook amid the pandemic uncertainty.
