Quorum sensing - a promising tool for degradation of industrial waste containing persistent organic pollutants

The mechanisms of yeast extracellular metabolites in stimulating microbial degradation of trichloroethylene: Physiological characteristics and omics analysis

The biodegradation of Trichloroethylene (TCE) is limited by low microbial metabolic capacity but can be enhanced through biostimulation strategies. This study explored the physiological effects and potential molecular mechanisms of the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica extracellular metabolites (YEMs) on the degradation of TCE by Acinetobacter LT1. Results indicated that YEMs stimulated the efficiency of strain LT1 by 50.28%. At the physiological level, YEMs exhibited protective effects on cell morphology, reduced oxidative stress, lessened membrane damage, and enhanced energy production and conversion. Analysis of omics results revealed that the regulation of various metabolic pathways by YEMs improved the degradation of TCE. Furthermore, RT-qPCR showed that the genes encoding YhhW protein in TCE stress and YEMs stimulation groups were 1.72 and 3.22 times the control group, respectively. Molecular docking results showed that the conformation of YhhW after binding to TCE changed into a more active form, which enhanced enzyme activity. Therefore, it is speculated that YhhW is the primary degradative enzyme involved in the process of YEMs stimulating strain LT1 to degrade TCE. These results reveal how YEMs induce strain LT1 to enhance TCE degradation.

The effect of quorum sensing on cadmium- and lead-containing wastewater treatment using activated sludge: Removal efficiency, enzyme activity, and microbial community

Quorum sensing (QS) is prevalent in activated sludge processes; however, its essential role in the treatment of heavy metal wastewater has rarely been studied. Therefore, in this study, acyl homoserine lactone (AHL)-mediated QS was used to regulate the removal performance, enzyme activity, and microbial community of Cd- and Pb-containing wastewater in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR) over 30 cycles. The results showed that exogenous AHL strengthened the removal of Cd(II) and Pb(II) in their coexistence wastewater during the entire period. The removal of NH4+-N, total phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was also enhanced by the addition of AHL despite the coexistence of Cd(II) and Pb(II). Meanwhile, the protein content of extracellular polymeric substances was elevated and the microbial metabolism and antioxidative response were stimulated by the addition of AHL, which was beneficial for resistance to heavy metal stress and promoted pollutant removal by activated sludge. Microbial sequencing indicated that AHL optimized the microbial community structure, with the abundance of dominant taxa Proteobacteria and Unclassified_f_Enterobacteriaceae increasing by 73.9% and 59.2% maximally, respectively. This study offers valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying Cd(II) and Pb(II) removal as well as microbial community succession under AHL availability in industrial wastewater.

Activated DBP degradation and relevant signal transduction path via quorum sensing autoinducers in Streptomyces sp. SH5

Microbe-mediated DBP (dibutyl phthalate) mineralization is acknowledged to be affected by diverse extracellular factors. However, little is known about the regulatory effects from quorum sensing (QS) signals. In this study, extracellularly applied QS signals A-like (hydroxymethyl dihydrofuran) was discovered to significantly enhance DBP degradation efficiency in Streptomyces sp. SH5. Monobutyl phthalate, protocatechuic acid and beta-ketoadipate were discovered as degradation intermediates by HPLC-TOF-MS/MS. Multi-omics analysis revealed the up-regulation of multiple hydrolases, transferases and decarboxylases that potentially contributed to A-like accelerated DBP degradation. Transcription of Orf2708, an orthologue of global transcriptional activator, was significantly induced by A-like. Orf2708 was demonstrated to interact specifically with the promoter of hydrolase orf2879 gene by EMSA, and the overexpression of orf2879 led to an enhanced DBP degradation in SH5. Taken together with the molecular docking studies showing the stability of ligand-receptor complex of A-like and its potential receptor Orf3712, a hierarchical regulatory cascade underlying the QS signal mediated DBP degradation was proposed as A-like/Orf3712 duplex formation, enhanced orf2708 expression and the downstream specific activation of hydrolase Orf2879. Our study presents the first evidence of GBLs-type promoted DBP degradation among bacteria, and the elucidated signal transduction path indicates a universal application potential of this activation strategy.

Unveiling the PCB biodegradation potential and stress survival strategies of resuscitated strain Pseudomonas sp. HR1

The exploration of resuscitated strains, facilitated by the resuscitation promoting factor (Rpf), has substantially expanded the pool of cultivated degraders, enhancing the screening of bio-inoculants for bioremediation applications. However, it remains unknown whether these resuscitated strains can re-enter the viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state and the specific stress conditions that trigger such a transition. In this work, the whole genome, and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)-degrading capabilities of a resuscitated strain HR1, were investigated. Notably, the focus of this exploration was on elucidating whether HR1 would undergo a transition into the VBNC state when exposed to low temperature and PCBs, with and without the presence of heavy metals (HMs). The results suggested that the resuscitated strain Pseudomonas sp. HR1 harbored various functional genes related to xenobiotic biodegradation, demonstrating remarkable efficiency in Aroclor 1242 degradation and strong resistance against stress induced by low temperature and PCBs. Nevertheless, when exposed to the combined stress of low temperature, PCBs, and HMs, HR1 underwent a transition into the VBNC state. This transition was characterized by significant decreases in enzyme activities and notable changes in both morphological and physiological traits when compared to normal cells. Gene expression analysis revealed molecular shifts underlying the VBNC state, with down-regulated genes showed differential expression across multiple pathways and functions, including oxidative phosphorylation, glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid cycle, amino acid metabolism, translation and cytoplasm, while up-regulated genes predominantly associated with transcription regulation, membrane function, quorum sensing, and transporter activity. These findings highlighted the great potential of resuscitated strains as bio-inoculants in bioaugmentation and shed light on the survival mechanisms of functional strains under stressful conditions, which should be carefully considered during bioremediation processes.

Reduction characteristic of chlorobenzene by a newly isolated Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens LY from a pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plant

A highly efficient chlorobenzene-degrading strain was isolated from the sludge of a sewage treatment plant associated with a pharmaceutical company. The strain exhibited a similarity of over 99.9% with multiple strains of Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens. Therefore, the strain was suggested to be P. ureafaciens LY. This novel strain exhibited a broad spectrum of pollutant degradation capabilities, effectively degrading chlorobenzene and other organic pollutants, such as 1, 2, 4-trichlorobenzene, phenol, and xylene. Moreover, P. ureafaciens LY co-metabolized mixtures of chlorobenzene with 1, 2, 4-trichlorobenzene or phenol. Evaluation of its degradation efficiency showed that it achieved an impressive degradation rate of 94.78% for chlorobenzene within 8 h. The Haldane-Andrews model was used to describe the growth of P. ureafaciens LY under specific pollutants and its concentrations, revealing a maximum specific growth rate (μmax ) of 0.33 h-1 . The isolation and characterization of P. ureafaciens LY, along with its ability to degrade chlorobenzene, provides valuable insights for the development of efficient and eco-friendly approaches to mitigate chlorobenzene contamination. Additionally, investigation of the degradation performance of the strain in the presence of other pollutants offers important information for understanding the complexities of co-metabolism in mixed-pollutant environments.

Distribution, sources, ecological risk and microbial response of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Qingdao bays, China

Bay ecosystem has garnered significant attention due to the severe threat posed by organic pollutants, particularly polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, there is a dearth of information regarding the extent of PAHs pollutant risk and its impact on microbial communities and metabolism within this environment. In this study, the distribution, sources, ecological risk, and microbial community and metabolic response of PAHs in Jiaozhou Bay, Aoshan Bay, and Lingshan Bay in Qingdao, China were investigated. The results showed that the average concentration of ∑PAHs ranged from 120 to 614 ng/L across three bays, with Jiaozhou and Aoshan Bay exhibiting a higher risk than Lingshan Bay due to an increased concentration of high-molecular-weight PAHs. Further analysis revealed a negative correlation between dissolved organic carbon concentration and ∑PAHs concentration in water. Metagenomic analysis demonstrated that higher levels of PAHs can lead to decreased microbial diversity, while the abundance of PAHs-degrading bacteria is enhanced. Additionally, the Erythrobacter, Jannaschia and Ruegeria genera were found to have a significant correlation with low-molecular-weight PAH concentrations. In terms of microbial metabolism, higher PAH concentrations were beneficial for carbohydrate metabolic pathway but unfavorable for amino acid metabolic pathways and membrane transport pathways in natural bay environments. These findings provide a foundation for controlling PAHs pollution and offer insights into the impact of PAHs on bacterial communities and metabolism in natural bay environments.

Bacterial enzymatic degradation of recalcitrant organic pollutants: catabolic pathways and genetic regulations

Contamination of soil and natural water bodies driven by increased organic pollutants remains a universal concern. Naturally, organic pollutants contain carcinogenic and toxic properties threatening all known life forms. The conventional physical and chemical methods employed to remove these organic pollutants ironically produce toxic and non-ecofriendly end-products. Whereas microbial-based degradation of organic pollutants provides an edge, they are usually cost-effective and take an eco-friendly approach towards remediation. Bacterial species, including Pseudomonas, Comamonas, Burkholderia, and Xanthomonas, have the unique genetic makeup to metabolically degrade toxic pollutants, conferring their survival in toxic environments. Several catabolic genes, such as alkB, xylE, catA, and nahAc, that encode enzymes and allow bacteria to degrade organic pollutants have been identified, characterized, and even engineered for better efficacy. Aerobic and anaerobic processes are followed by bacteria to metabolize aliphatic saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons such as alkanes, cycloalkanes, aldehydes, and ethers. Bacteria use a variety of degrading pathways, including catechol, protocatechuate, gentisate, benzoate, and biphenyl, to remove aromatic organic contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and pesticides from the environment. A better understanding of the principle, mechanisms, and genetics would be beneficial for improving the metabolic efficacy of bacteria to such ends. With a focus on comprehending the mechanisms involved in various catabolic pathways and the genetics of the biotransformation of these xenobiotic compounds, the present review offers insight into the various sources and types of known organic pollutants and their toxic effects on health and the environment.

Aerobic composting with sauerkraut fermentation waste water: Increasing the stability and complexity of bacterial community and changing bacterial community assembly processes

Aerobic composting renders the sauerkraut fermentation waste water harmless while adding soluble nutrients. Unravelling the bacterial community assembly processes, changes in community robustness and community cohesion and the relationship between them under composting treatment of sauerkraut fermentation waste water is an interesting topic. Sauerkraut fermentation waste water was used for composting, which increased bacterial linkages, community robustness, competitive behaviour during warming periods and cooperative behaviour during cooling periods, and the control of community assembly processes shifts from deterministic processes (variable selection) to stochastic processes (decentralised limitation). At the same time, the influence of community robustness and community cohesion on community assembly processes was increased. Community cohesion and robustness were significantly correlated with community function. These results indicate that community robustness and community cohesion are critical for the biological handling of hazardous substances.

Emerging pollutants characterization, mitigation and toxicity assessment of sewage wastewater treatment plant- India: A case study

India faces major challenges related to fresh water supply and the reuse of treated wastewater is an important strategy to combat water scarcity. Wastewater in Gorakhpur, India, is treated by a decentralised wastewater treatment system (DEWATS) and the treated wastewater is reused in the rural area. This research provides important scientific data that ascertain the safety of wastewater reuse in this region. The physicochemical characteristics, including pigment, ionic strength, BOD, COD, TDS, TSS, salinity, total N, ammonium N, phenolics, heavy metals, and sulphate, of the inlet and outlet sewage water samples (SWWs) from a wastewater treatment facility was conducted. These parameters were found to be significantly over the national limit. The inlet and outlet samples were further characterised by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). SEM showed microstructure and the presence of various metals, polymers, and other co-pollutants in the samples and FT-IR confirmed the presence of aldehyde, hard liquor, and nitrogen molecules in the SWW's discharge. Many endocrine disruptors and potentially mutagenic chemical substances (e.g., Dodecane, Hexadecane, Octadecane etc.) were identified in the outlet SWW by the GC-MS analysis. Toxicity of the SWW was assessed via phytotoxicity assessment using Phaseolus mungo L. and histological and biochemical analyses of Heteropneustes fossilis in a 24-h exposure study. Results confirmed the wastewater was harmful and inhibited germination of P. mungo L. by >80% compared to the control, destroyed gill laminae and significantly increased oxidative stress (above 5% increase in catalase production) in H. fossilis. This work clearly demonstrated that the quality of the treated wastewater in Gorakhpur was poor and immediate action is needed before it can be discharged or reused.

Mechanochemical remediation of the chlorinated compounds contaminated soil depending on the minerals inside-the most reasonable approach

This study explored a possible destruction of hexachlorobenzene (HCB) as example of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) as well as the dechlorination mechanism by directly using minerals in the soil, such as antigorite, talc and olivine. Compared with a stable quartz phase of SiO₂, all three Mg silicate minerals demonstrated certain degrading capacity for HCB with different efficiency order as: antigorite > talc > olivine > SiO₂ at 2 h of milling time. Interestingly, olivine exhibited a better performance than antigorite at 4 h of milling time, giving destruction percentage of 92.7% over 89.0% even at high concentrated HCB up to 5% added. Raman and ESR characterizations of the ball milled sample with olivine indicated the formation of amorphous carbon and graphitic carbon, and the occurrence of free radicals was observed to play an important role in dechlorination and carbonization of HCB. The first identified effectiveness of directly using Mg silicate minerals, allowed no addition of active chemicals during the ball milling, therefore avoided the concern over extrinsic contaminations on the soil. Olivine was further utilized to deal with actual contaminated soil and showed unique advantages on application prospects.

Resuscitation-Promoting Factor Accelerates Enrichment of Highly Active Tetrachloroethene/Polychlorinated Biphenyl-Dechlorinating Cultures

The anaerobic bioremediation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) is largely impeded by difficulties in massively enriching PCB dechlorinators in short periods of time. Tetrachloroethene (PCE) is often utilized as an alternative electron acceptor to preenrich PCB-dechlorinating bacteria. In this study, resuscitation promoting factor (Rpf) was used as an additive to enhance the enrichment of the microbial communities involved in PCE/PCBs dechlorination. The results indicated that Rpf accelerates PCE dechlorination 3.8 to 5.4 times faster than control cultures. In Aroclor 1260-fed cultures, the amendment of Rpf enables significantly more rapid and extensive dechlorination of PCBs. The residual high-chlorinated PCB congeners (≥5 Cl atoms) accounted for 36.7% and 59.8% in the Rpf-amended cultures and in the corresponding controls, respectively. This improvement was mainly attributed to the enhanced activity of the removal of meta-chlorines (47.7 mol % versus 14.7 mol %), which did not appear to affect dechlorination pathways. The dechlorinators, including Dehalococcoides in Chloroflexi and Desulfitobacterium in Firmicutes, were greatly enriched via Rpf amendment. The abundance of nondechlorinating populations, including Methanosarcina, Desulfovibrio, and Bacteroides, was also greatly enhanced via Rpf amendment. These results suggest that Rpf serves as an effective additive for the rapid enrichment of active dechlorinating cultures so as to provide a new approach by which to massively cultivate bioinoculants for accelerated in situ anaerobic bioremediation. IMPORTANCE The resuscitation promoting factor (Rpf) of Micrococcus luteus has been reported to resuscitate and stimulate the growth of functional microorganisms that are involved in the aerobic degradation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). However, few studies have been conducted to investigate the role of Rpf on anaerobic microbial populations. In this study, the enhancement of Rpf on the anaerobic microbial dechlorination of PCE/PCBs was discovered. Additionally, the Rpf-responsive populations underlying the enhanced dechlorination were uncovered. This report reveals the rapid enrichment of active dechlorinating cultures via Rpf amendment, and this sheds light on massively enriching PCB dechlorinators in short periods of time. The enhanced in situ anaerobic bioremediation of PCBs could be expected by supplementing Rpf.

Regulatory and innovative mechanisms of bacterial quorum sensing-mediated pathogenicity: a review

Quorum sensing (QS) is a system of bacteria in which cells communicate with each other; it is linked to cell density in the microbiome. The high-density colony population can provide enough small molecular signals to enable a range of cellular activities, gene expression, pathogenicity, and antibiotic resistance that cause damage to the hosts. QS is the basis of chronic illnesses in human due to microbial sporulation, expression of virulence factors, biofilm formation, secretion of enzymes, or production of membrane vesicles. The transfer of antimicrobial resistance gene (ARG) among antibiotic resistance bacteria is a major public health concern. QS-mediated biofilm is a hub for ARG horizontal gene transfer. To develop innovative approach to prevent microbial pathogenesis, it is essential to understand the role of QS especially in response to environmental stressors such as exposure to antibiotics. This review provides the latest knowledge on the relationship of QS and pathogenicity and explore the novel approach to control QS via quorum quenching (QQ) using QS inhibitors (QSIs) and QQ enzymes. The state-of-the art knowledge on the role of QS and the potential of using QQ will help to overcome the threats of rapidly emerging bacterial pathogenesis.

Engineering microbes for enhancing the degradation of environmental pollutants: A detailed review on synthetic biology

Anthropogenic activities resulted in the deposition of huge quantities of contaminants such as heavy metals, dyes, hydrocarbons, etc into an ecosystem. The serious ill effects caused by these pollutants to all living organisms forced in advancement of technology for degrading or removing these pollutants. This degrading activity is mostly depending on microorganisms owing to their ability to survive in harsh adverse conditions. Though native strains possess the capability to degrade these pollutants the development of genetic engineering and molecular biology resulted in engineering approaches that enhanced the efficiency of microbes in degrading pollutants at faster rate. Many bioinformatics tools have been developed for altering/modifying genetic content in microbes to increase their degrading potency. This review provides a detailed note on engineered microbes - their significant importance in degrading environmental contaminants and the approaches utilized for modifying microbes. The genes responsible for degrading the pollutants have been identified and modified fir increasing the potential for quick degradation. The methods for increasing the tolerance in engineered microbes have also been discussed. Thus engineered microbes prove to be effective alternate compared to native strains for degrading pollutants.

Metabolic characteristics and markers in viable but nonculturable state of Pseudomonas aeruginosa induced by chlorine stress

Many Gram-negative pathogens enter the viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state to resist external environmental stress (such as disinfection). However, little is known about the metabolic properties, especially for the metabolic markers, of VBNC bacteria, which impedes the development of efficient disinfection technologies and causes more potential health risks. In this study, we analyzed the metabolic characteristics of chlorine stress-induced VBNC Pseudomonas aeruginosa at the population and single-cell levels. The overall metabolic activity of VBNC bacteria showed a downward trend, but the glyoxylate cycle, fatty acid and glycerophospholipid metabolism pathways were up-regulated. Based on the metabolic profiles of VBNC bacteria, nine metabolic markers (pyruvate, glyoxylate, guanine, glutamate, sn glycero-3-phos-phocholine, fatty acid, D-alanine, glutathione, N-Butanoyl-D-homoserine lactone) were determined. The results of single-cell Raman spectroscopy showed that the metabolic activity of VBNC bacteria was significantly reduced, but showed more significant metabolic heterogeneity. The redshift of the Raman peaks of ¹⁵N and ¹³C labeled VBNC bacteria was significantly weaker than that of the culturable bacteria, suggesting that the VBNC bacteria have a reduced ability to synthesize proteins, nucleotides, phospholipids, and carbohydrates. The result of this study can help to better understand the metabolic mechanisms and energy management strategy of VBNC bacteria, to achieve precise identification and effective control of VBNC bacteria.

Degradation and decolourization potential of ligninolytic enzyme producing Bacillus paramycoides BL2 and Micrococcus luteus BL3 for pulp paper industrial effluent and its toxicity evaluation

Aim of this study was to optimize the production of Ligninolytic enzyme for the degradation of complex pollutants present in pulp paper industrial effluent (PPIE). Two ligninolytic enzyme-producing bacterial strains were isolated from PPIE and identified as Bacillus paramycoides strain BL2 (MZ676667) and Micrococcus luteus strains BL3 (MZ676668). The identified bacterial strain Bacillus paramycoides strain BL2 showed optimum production of LiP (4.30 U/ml), MnP (3.38 U/ml) at 72 h of incubation, while laccase (4.43 U/ml) at 96 h of incubation. While, Micrococcus luteus strains BL3 produced maximum LiP (3.98) and MnP (3.85 U/ml) at 96 h of incubation and maximum laccase (3.85 U/ml) at 72 h of incubation, pH 7-8, and temperatures of 30-35 °C. Furthermore, in the presence of glucose (1.0%) and peptone (0.5%) as nutrient sources, the enzyme activity of consortium leads to reduction of lignin (70%), colour (63%) along with COD (71%) and BOD (58%). The pollutants detected in control i.e. 3.6-Dioxa-2,7-disilaoctane, 2-Heptnoic acid,trimethylsilyl ester, 7-Methyldinaphtho [2,1-b,1',2'-d] silole, Hexadeconoic acid, trimethylysilyl ester, Methyl1(Z)-3,3-dipheny.1-4-hexenoale, 2,6,10,14,18,22-Tetracosahexane,2,2-dimethylpropyl(2Z,6E)-10,11epoxy5,6 Dihyrostigmasterol, acetate were completely diminished. The toxicity of PPIE was reduced up to 75%. Hence, knowledge of this study will be very useful for industrial sector for treatment of complex wastewater.

Microbial Journey: Mount Everest to Mars

A rigorous exploration of microbial diversity has revealed its presence on Earth, deep oceans, and vast space. The presence of microbial life in diverse environmental conditions, ranging from moderate to extreme temperature, pH, salinity, oxygen, radiations, and altitudes, has provided the necessary impetus to search for them by extending the limits of their habitats. Microbiology started as a distinct science in the mid-nineteenth century and has provided inputs for the betterment of mankind during the last 150 years. As beneficial microbes are assets and pathogens are detrimental, studying both have its own merits. Scientists are nowadays working on illustrating the microbial dynamics in Earth's subsurface, deep sea, and polar regions. In addition to studying the role of microbes in the environment, the microbe-host interactions in humans, animals and plants are also unearthing newer insights that can help us to improve the health of the host by modulating the microbiota. Microbes have the potential to remediate persistent organic pollutants. Antimicrobial resistance which is a serious concern can also be tackled only after monitoring the spread of resistant microbes using disciplines of genomics and metagenomics The cognizance of microbiology has reached the top of the world. Space Missions are now looking for signs of life on the planets (specifically Mars), the Moon and beyond them. Among the most potent pieces of evidence to support the existence of life is to look for microbial, plant, and animal fossils. There is also an urgent need to deliberate and communicate these findings to layman and policymakers that would help them to take an adequate decision for better health and the environment around us. Here, we present a glimpse of recent advancements by scientists from around the world, exploring and exploiting microbial diversity.

Claroideoglomus etunicatum affects the structural and functional genes of the rhizosphere microbial community to help maize resist Cd and La stresses

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant rhizosphere microbes reportedly enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stresses and promote plant growth in contaminated soils. The co-contamination of soil by heavy metals (e.g., Cd) and rare earth elements (e.g., La) represents a severe environmental problem. Although the influence of AMF in the phytoremediation of contaminated soils is well documented, the underlying interactive mechanisms between AMF and rhizosphere microbes are still unclear. We conducted a greenhouse pot experiment to evaluate the effects of AMF (Claroideoglomus etunicatum) on maize growth, nutrient and metal uptake, rhizosphere microbial community, and functional genes in soils with separate and combined applications of Cd and La. The purpose of this experiment was to explore the mechanism of AMF affecting plant growth and metal uptake via interactions with rhizosphere microbes. We found that C. etunicatum (i) significantly enhanced plant nutritional level and biomass and decreased metal concentration in the co-contaminated soil; (ii) significantly altered the structure of maize rhizosphere bacterial and fungal communities; (iii) strongly enriched the abundance of carbohydrate metabolism genes, ammonia and nitrate production genes, IAA (indole-3-acetic acid) and ACC deaminase (1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate) genes, and slightly altered the abundance of P-related functional genes; (iv) regulated the abundance of microbial quorum sensing system and metal membrane transporter genes, thereby improving the stability and adaptability of the rhizosphere microbial community. This study provides evidence of AMF improving plant growth and resistance to Cd and La stresses by regulating plant rhizosphere microbial communities and aids our understanding of the underlying mechanisms.

Mitigation of hazards and risks of emerging pollutants through innovative treatment techniques of post methanated distillery effluent - A review

Distillery wastewater has high biological and chemical oxygen demand and requires additional treatment before it can be safely discharged into receiving water. It is usually processed through a biomethanation digester and the end product is the post-methanated distillery effluent (PMDE). Research have shown that PMDE released by molasses-based distilleries is a hazardous effluent that can cause harm to the biota and the environment; it contains elevated amount of total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS) and excess levels of persistent organic compounds (POPs), heavy metals, phenolic compounds, and salts. The practice of wastewater reuse for irrigation in many water scarce countries necessitates the proper treatment of PMDE before it is discharged into receiving water. Convention methods have been in practice for decades, but innovative technologies are needed to enhance the efficiency of PMDE treatment. Advance physical treatment such as membrane separation technology using graphene, ion-exchange and ultrafiltration membranes; chemical treatment such as advanced oxidation methods, electrocoagulation and photocatalytic technologies; biological treatment such as microbial and enzymatic treatment; and hybrid treatment such as microbial-fuel cell (MFC), genetically modified organisms (GMO) and constructed wetland technologies, are promising new methods to improve the quality of PMDE. This review provides insight into current accomplishments evaluates their suitability and discusses future developments in the detoxification of PMDE. The consolidated knowledge will help to develop a better management for the safe disposal and the reuse of PMDE wastewater.

Characterization of persistent organic pollutants and culturable and non-culturable bacterial communities in pulp and paper sludge after secondary treatment

Due to the presence of various organic contaminants, improper disposal of pulp-paper wastewater poses harm to the environment and human health. In this work, pulp-paper sludge (PPS) after secondary treatment were collected from M/s Century Pulp-paper Mills in India, the chemical nature of the organic pollutants was determined after solvent extraction. All the isolates were able to produce lipase (6.34-3.93 U ml^-1) which could account for the different fatty acids detected in the PPS. The dominant strains were in the classes of α and γ Proteobacteria followed by Firmicutes. The Shannon-Weiner diversity indexes for phylotype richness for the culturable and non-culturable bacterial community were 2.01 and 3.01, respectively, indicating the non-culturable bacterial strains has higher species richness and diversity compared to the culturable bacterial strains. However, the culturable strains had higher species evenness (0.94 vs 0.90). Results suggested only a few isolated strains were resistant to the POPs in the PPS, where as non-cultural bacteria survived by entering viable but non-cultural state. The isolated strains (Brevundimonas diminuta, Aeromonas punctata, Enterobacter hormaechei, Citrobacter braakii, Bacillus pumilus and Brevundimonas terrae) are known for their multidrug resistance but their tolerance to POPs have not previously been reported and deserved further investigation. The findings of this research established the presence of POPs which influence the microbial population. Tertiary treatment is recommended prior to the safe disposal of pulp paper mill waste into the environment.
