Efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole in various waters with peroxymonosulfate activated by magnetic-modified sludge biochar: Surface-bound radical mechanism

Efficient degradation of sulfadiazine by UV-triggered electron transfer on oxalic acid-functionalized corn straw biochar for activating peroxyacetic acid: Performance, mechanism, and theoretical calculation

A novel UV/oxalic acid functionalized corn straw biochar (OCBC)/peroxyacetic acid (PAA) system was built to degrade sulfadiazine from waters. 94.7 % of SDZ was removed within 30 min by UV/OCBC/PAA. The abundant surface functional groups and persistent free radicals (PFRs) on OCBC were responsible for these performances. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and other characterization analysis revealed, under UV irradiation, the addition of OCBC served as electron donor, which might promote the reaction of electrons with PAA. The quenching and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) tests indicated that R-O•, 1O2 and •OH were generated. Theoretical calculations indicated sulfonamide bridge was vulnerable under the attacks of reactive species. In addition, high removal effect achieved by 5 reuse cycles and different real waters also suggested the sustainability of UV/OCBC/PAA. Overall, this study provided a feasible approach to remove SDZ with high mineralization efficiency, in addition to a potential strategy for resource utilization of corn straw.

Hydrothermal N-doping, magnetization and ball milling co-functionalized sludge biochar design and its selective adsorption of trace concentration sulfamethoxazole from waters

This study aimed to design an efficient and easily collected/regenerated adsorbent for trace concentration sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal to eliminate its negative impacts on human health, reduce the risk of adsorbed SMX release and boost the reusability of adsorbent. Various multiple modified sludge-derived biochars (SBC) were synthesized in this work and applied to adsorb trace level SMX. The results demonstrated that hydrothermal N-doping, magnetization coupled with ball milling co-functionalized SBC (BMNSBC) displayed the greater adsorption ability for SMX. The maximum adsorption capacity of BMNSBC for SMX calculated by Langmuir model was 1.02 × 105 μg/g, which was 12.9 times of SBC. Characterization combined with adsorption experiments (e.g., models fitting) and DFT calculation confirmed that π-π conjugation, Lewis acid-base, pore filling and Fe3O4 complexation were the primary forces driving SMX binding to BMNSBC. These diversified physicochemical forces contributed to the fine anti-interference of BMNSBC to background substances (e.g., inorganic compounds and organic matter) and its remarkable adsorption ability for SMX in diverse real waters. The great magnetization strength of BMNSBC was advantage for its collection and efficient regeneration by NaOH desorption. Additionally, BMNSBC exhibited an outstanding security in view of its low leaching levels of iron (Fe) and total nitrogen (TN). The multiple superiority of BMNSBC enable it to be a prospective material for emerging contaminants (e.g., SMX) purification, also offering a feasible disposal approach for municipal waste (e.g., sludge).

The role of chitosan in promoting the catalytic activity of bismuth ferrite as peroxymonosulfate activator for antibiotics removal

Chitosan possesses electron-rich amino (-NH2) and hydroxyl (-OH) moieties which can anchor with transition metal ions during synthesis. Herein, chitosan was employed as an additive to prepare bismuth ferrite (BFO) via hydrothermal approach. The characterization studies revealed that adding chitosan during BFO synthesis leads to the creation of more oxygen vacancies. The performance of chitosan modified BFO (CMB) was evaluated as peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for ciprofloxacin (CIP) removal. Apparently, the addition of 10 wt% chitosan during BFO synthesis (CMB-10) resulted in 1.7 times increase of performance compared to the pristine BFO. Increasing the catalyst loading and PMS dosage resulted in positive effect with 5.7 and 1.9 times rate enhancement, respectively. The CMB-10 exhibited tolerance against pH variation, water matrix, and interfering species. The scavenging experiments indicated that singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide radicals (O2•-) and sulfate radicals (SO4•-) played a major role in CIP degradation. These reactive oxygen species were generated from PMS activation via Fe3+/Fe2+ and Bi5+/Bi3+ coupling, and oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface. The CIP degradation pathways were also elucidated based on the detected CIP intermediates. Overall, this study provides insights into the use of chitosan to prepare sustainable materials for pollutants removal via PMS activation.

Amino-functionalized cellulose composite for efficient simultaneous adsorption of tetracycline and copper ions: Performance, mechanism and DFT study

A novel cellulose composite (denoted as PEI@MMA-1) with porous interconnected structure was prepared by adsorbing methyl cellulose (MC) onto microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and cross-linking polyethyleneimine (PEI) with MCC by the action of epichlorohydrin, which had the excellent adsorption property, wettability and elasticity. The performances of PEI@MMA-1 composite for removing tetracycline (TC), Cu2+ and coexistent pollutant (TC and Cu2+ mixture) were systematically explored. For single TC or Cu2+ contaminant, the maximum adsorption capacities were 75.53 and 562.23 mg/g at 30 °C, respectively, while in the dual contaminant system, they would form complexes and Cu2+ could play a "bridge" role to remarkably promote the adsorption of TC with the maximum adsorption capacities of 281.66 and 253.58 mg/g for TC and Cu2+. In addition, the adsorption kinetics, isotherms and adsorption mechanisms of single-pollutant and dual-pollutant systems have been thoroughly investigated. Theoretical calculations indicated that the amide group of TC molecule with the assistance of Cu2+ interacted with the hydroxyl group of PEI@MMA-1 composite to enhance the TC adsorption capacity. Cycle regeneration and fixed bed column experiments revealed that the PEI@MMA-1 possessed the excellent stability and utility. Current PEI@MMA-1 cellulose composite exhibited a promising application for remediation of heavy metals and antibiotics coexistence wastewater.

Facile synthesis of ball-milling and oxalic acid co-modified sludge biochar to efficiently activate peroxymonosulfate for sulfamethoxazole degradation: 1O2 and surface-bound radicals

A novel approach of ball milling and oxalic acid was employed to modify sludge-based biochar (BOSBC) to boost its activation performance for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) towards efficient degradation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). 98.6% of SMX was eliminated by PMS/BOSBC system within 60 min. Furthermore, PMS/BOSBC system was capable of maintaining high removal rates for SMX (>88.8%) in a wide pH range from 3 to 9, and displayed a high tolerance to background electrolytes including inorganic ions and humic acid (HA). Quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis, in-situ Raman characterization and PMS decomposition experiments confirmed that the non-radicals of 1O2 and surface-bound radicals were the main contributors to SMX degradation by PMS/BOSBC system. The results of ecotoxicity assessment illustrated that all transformed products (TPs) generated in PMS/BOSBC system were less toxic than that of SMX. After five reuse cycles, PMS/BOSBC system still maintained a high removal rate for SMX (77.8%). Additionally, PMS/BOSBC system exhibited excellent degradation performance for SMX in various real waters (Yangtze River water (76.5%), lake water (74.1%), tap water (86.5%), and drinking water (98.1%)). Overall, this study provided novel insights on non-metal modification for sludge-based biochar and non-radical mechanism, and offered a feasible approach for municipal sludge disposal.

Unveiling the mechanisms of peracetic acid activation by iron-rich sludge biochar for sulfamethoxazole degradation with wide adaptability

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on peracetic acid (PAA) has been extensively concerned for the degradation of organic pollutants. In this study, metallic iron-modified sludge biochar (Fe-SBC) was employed to activate PAA for the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The characterization results indicated that FeO and Fe2O3 were successfully loaded on the surface of the sludge biochar (SBC). Fe-SBC/PAA system achieved 92% SMX removal after 30 min. The pseudo-first-order kinetic reaction constant of the Fe-SBC/PAA system was 7.34 × 10-2 min-1, which was 2.4 times higher than the SBC/PAA system. The degradation of SMX was enhanced with increasing the Fe-SBC dosage and PAA concentration. Apart from Cl-, NO3- and SO42- had a negligible influence on the degradation of SMX. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques identified the existence of reactive species, of which CH3C(O)OO•, 1O2, and O2•- were dominant reactive species in Fe-SBC/PAA system. The effect of different water matrices on the removal of SMX was investigated. The removal of SMX in tap water and lake water were 79% and 69%, respectively. Four possible pathways for the decay of SMX were presented according to the identification of oxidation products. In addition, following the ecological structure-activity relationship model (ECOSAR) procedure and the germination experiments with lettuce seeds to predict the toxicity of the intermediates. The acute and chronic ecotoxicity of SMX solution was dramatically diminished by processing with Fe-SBC/PAA system. In general, this study offered a prospective strategy for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Removal of benzotriazole derivatives by biochar: Potential environmental applications

Benzotriazole and its derivatives (BTAs) are commonly present in wastewater due to their extensive use in industrial processes, yet their removal is still unexplored. Here, we test the removal of these pollutants using two functionalised biochars, synthesised from wild plum (WpOH) and apricot (AsPhA) kernels. The aim of this work was to optimise the adsorption process against various BTAs (i.e., benzotriazole (BTZ), 4-hydroxy-1H-benzotriazole (OHBZ), 4-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (4 MBZ), 5-methyl-1H-benzotriazole (5 MBZ), 5-chloro-1H-benzotriazole (ClBZ), 5,6-dimethyl-1H-benzotriazole (DMBZ)), and determine the adsorption mechanisms at play, using real wastewater matrices. Batch studies showed that the optimal adsorption pH ranged between 4 and 6 for WpOH and AsPhA, respectively, and equilibrium was reached after 240 min. The kinetic models that best described the adsorption process were in the following order: Elovich model > pseudo-second order model > pseudo-first order model. The equilibrium data showed the highest correlation with the Freundlich isotherm, indicating multilayer adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity obtained in mixtures was 379 mg/g on WpOH and 526 mg/g on AsPhA. The mechanistic work revealed that the BTAs became bound to the biochar primarily through H-bonding, n-π and π-π EDA interactions. In wastewater, obtained before and after conventional treatment, the concentration of OHBZ and BTZ was reduced by >40%, while the concentration of the other compounds studied fell below the detection limit (∼2.0-90 ng/L). Finally, using a Vibrio fischeri assay, we showed that adsorption onto AsPhA significantly reduced the relative toxicity of both raw and treated wastewater.

Treatment of bisphenol pollutant in water by N,P-co-doped carbon nanosheet: Fast degradation, toxicity elimination and reaction mechanism investigation

Metal-free carbon catalysts perform well in peroxymonosulfate-based advanced oxidation process for the treatment of organic pollutant-containing wastewater. Herein, a natural biomolecule of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), containing abundant N and P elements, served as sole precursor to prepare N,P-co-doped carbon through one-step anoxic pyrolysis, which was applied as peroxymonosulfate activator to treat bisphenol-contaminated water. Owing to the endogenous N and P elements in ATP, in-situ doping was achieved for the prepared carbon material with excellent doping effect, such as high doping amount and numerous defects. During pyrolysis process, the generated gases facilitated the exfoliation of carbon structure, resulting in a nanosheet-like morphology with large specific surface area, e.g., 852.75 m² g^-1 for NPCN-900 sample obtained at 900 °C. Benefiting from the structural modulation brought by N,P co-doping, typical sample of NPCN-900 presented excellent catalytic performance towards bisphenol AF (BPAF) degradation through PMS activation. An apparent reaction rate constant of 0.4115 min^-1 was calculated under the investigated reaction conditions. Further studies indicated that ¹O₂, surface-bound •OH and SO₄^-• worked together in NPCN-900/PMS system for BPAF degradation. Graphitic N, pyrrolic N, CO groups, defect structure and the doped P atoms in NPCN-900 contributed to PMS activation. It was also important that the toxicity of BPAF solution could be preliminarily eliminated after treatment by NPCN-900/PMS system, which was verified by ecotoxicity assessments through ECOSAR program and green algae growth experiments.

Algae-derived metal-free boron-doped biochar acts as a catalyst for the activation of peroxymonosulfate toward the degradation of diclofenac

In this study, plain seaweed biochar (SW) and boron-doped seaweed biochar (BSW) were prepared through a simple pyrolysis process using Undaria pinnatifida (algae biomass) and boric acid. The BSW catalyst was utilized to degrade organic pollutants in aqueous environments by activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Surface characterization of the BSW demonstrated successful doping of boron into the biochar materials. BSW₆₀₀ exhibited greater catalytic activity than SW₆₀₀, as evidenced by the former's maximum adsorption capacity of diclofenac (DCF) onto BSW₆₀₀ (q_max = 30.01 mg g^-1) and the activation of PMS. Complete degradation of DCF was achieved in 30 min using 100 mg L^-1 BSW₆₀₀, 0.5 mM PMS, and 6.5 initial solution pH as critical parameters. The pseudo-first-order kinetic model accurately described the DCF degradation kinetics. The scavenger experiment displayed that radical and non-radical reactive oxygen species (ROS) formed in the BSW₆₀₀/PMS system. Furthermore, the generation of ROS in the BSW₆₀₀/PMS system was confirmed by electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). The percentage contribution of ROS was assessed to be 10, 65, and 25% for HO^•, SO₄^•-, and ¹O₂, respectively. Additionally, the electron transfer pathway was also confirmed by electrochemical analysis. Moreover, the influence of water matrics on the BSW₆₀₀/PMS system was demonstrated. The co-existence of anions and humic acid (HA) did not affect the catalytic activity of the BSW₆₀₀/PMS system. The recyclability of BSW₆₀₀ was assessed by DCF removal (86.3%) after three cycles. Ecological structure-activity relationships software was used to assess by-product toxicity. This study demonstrates the efficacy of non-metallic heteroatom-doped biochar materials as eco-friendly catalysts in groundwater applications.
