Persistent halogenated compounds in fish from rivers in the Pearl River Delta, South China: Geographical pattern and implications for anthropogenic effects on the environment

Space-use strategy drives fine-scale spatial variation of chlorinated paraffins in indo-pacific humpback dolphins

Contaminant accumulation in organisms can be influenced by both biological traits and environmental conditions. However, delineating the main factors affecting contaminant burdens in organisms remains challenging. Here, we conducted an initial investigation into the impact of diet and habitat on the accumulation of short- (SCCPs) and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (MCCPs) in Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins (2003-2020, n = 128) from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), a highly polluted estuary in China. The detected levels of SCCPs (5897 ± 3480 ng g-1 lw) and MCCPs (13,960 ± 8285 ng g-1 lw) in blubber samples of humpback dolphin are the highest among recorded values marine mammals. Both SCCPs and MCCPs exhibited biomagnification factor values exceeding 1, suggesting their biomagnification potential within the dolphins and their diet. Quantitative diet analysis using the dolphin fatty acid signatures revealed that humpback dolphins inhabiting the western PRE consumed a larger proportion of carnivorous fish than those from the eastern PRE. However, spatial analysis showed that humpback dolphins in the western PRE contained lower SCCP/MCCP concentrations than those from the eastern PRE. Based on these findings we suggest that, compared to diet differences, spatial variations of SCCPs/MCCPs in humpback dolphins may be predominantly influenced by their space-use strategies, as the eastern PRE is closer to the pollutant discharge source and transfer routes.

A comprehensive assessment of external exposure to persistent halogenated organic pollutants for residents in an e-waste recycling site, South China

Human skin wipes from 30 participants, air, dust, and food items were collected from a former electronic waste site in South China to provide a comprehensive understanding of residents' exposure to halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). The total concentration of halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in the dust, air, food and skin wipes ranged 240-25000 ng/g, 130-2500 pg/m3, 0.08-590 ng/g wet weight, and 69-28000 ng/m2, respectively. Wild fish, vegetables, and air were dominated by PCBs, whereas dust, livestock, and poultry were dominated by HFRs. The HOP concentrations were several orders of magnitude higher in local foodstuffs than in market foodstuffs. The chemical composition on the forehead was remarkably different from that on the hand. The importance of different exposure routes depends on the residents' food choices, except decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE). For residents who consumed a 100-foot diet (mainly egg) and local wild fish, diet ingestion overwhelmed other exposure routes, and PCBs were mainly contributed by fish and HFRs by egg. For residents who consumed market food, the dermal absorption of most PCB congeners and dust ingestion of highly brominated flame retardants were relatively prominent. Inhalation was found to be a crucial route for pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB).

Evidence for Adverse Effects on Liver Development and Regeneration in Zebrafish by Decabromodiphenyl Ethane

Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), a ubiquitous emerging pollutant, could be enriched in the liver of organisms, but its effects and mechanisms on liver development and regeneration remain largely unknown. In the present study, we first investigated the adverse effects on liver development and found decreased area and intensity of fluorescence in transgenic zebrafish larvae exposed to DBDPE; further results in wild-type zebrafish larvae revealed a possible mechanism involving disturbed MAPK/Fox O signaling pathways and cell cycle arrest as indicated by decreased transcription of growth arrest and DNA-damage-inducible beta a (gadd45ba). Subsequently, an obstructed recovery process of liver tissue after partial hepatectomy was characterized by the changing profiles of ventral lobe-to-intestine ratio in transgenic female adults upon DBDPE exposure; further results confirmed the adverse effects on liver regeneration by the alterations of the hepatic somatic index and proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression in wild-type female adults and also pointed out a potential role of a disturbed signaling pathway involving cell cycles and glycerolipid metabolism. Our results not only provided novel evidence for the hepatotoxicity and underlying mechanism of DBDPE but also were indicative of subsequent ecological and health risk assessment.

Fatty acids and organohalogen contaminants in seafood from the Pearl River Estuary, China: Risk-benefit analyses of seafood consumption

Seafood has long been considered a healthy food choice, but it is also an exposure source of contaminants that may bring potential health risks to humans. Here, 80 organohalogen contaminants (OHCs) and 36 fatty acids (FAs) were analyzed in 22 (n = 211) and 19 fishery species (n = 176) from the eastern- and western Pearl River Estuary (PRE), respectively, for risk-benefit analysis. The average concentrations of total FAs in seafood from the eastern- and western PRE were 26.0 ± 2.14 and 21.3 ± 1.66 mg g-1 wet weight, respectively. Seafood from the eastern PRE exhibited higher levels of OHCs than those from the western PRE, highlighting the spatial heterogeneity of OHC contamination within the PRE. Species occupying higher trophic levels (TLs) typically demonstrated higher levels of OHC accumulation, indicating the biomagnification potential of these contaminants in the PRE ecosystem. Significant negative correlations were observed between TLs and the proportions of monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids, presumably attributed to the ability of fish to synthesize these FAs decreases with increasing TLs. Our benefit-risk quotient (BRQ) analyses revealed that, as far as OHCs are concerned, all seafood species had a BRQ∑OHCs value <1, except for one-spot snapper and daggertooth pike conger, which had BRQ values of 1.03 and 1.14, respectively. The findings indicate that most marine species here analyzed may not pose significant health risks to consumers as a result of OHC exposure. However, considering that many other pollutants and nutrients are not analyzed here, the results of our risk assessments should be treated as preliminary, not final. Future data collection is essential to enhance the comprehensiveness of this type of analysis.

Glucose facilitates the acclimation of organohalide-respiring bacteria

Organohalide respiring bacteria (OHRB) are the mainstay for bioremediation of organohalide contaminated sites. Enrichment screening of OHRB is prerequisite for the development of high performance dehalogenating bacterial agents. Herein, different domestication strategies were formulated for the main factors (nutrients and inocula) affecting the enrichment of OHRB, and the dehalogenation effect was verified with 2-chlorophenol and per/polyfluoroalkyl substances. The nutrients had a greater impact on the dehalogenation of the systems relative to the inocula, where the combination of glucose and anaerobic sludge (Glu-AS) had a faster degradation rate (26 ± 2.5 µmol L^-1 d^-1) and more complete dechlorination effectiveness. Meanwhile, the dehalogenation results for perfluorooctanoic acid and trifluoroacetic acid showed the biological defluorination was closely related to the position of fluoride. Further, the microbial community structure profiled the resource competition, metabolic cross-feeding and nutrient dynamic exchange among fermenting bacteria, OHRB and methanogenic bacteria under different domestication strategies as endogenous factors affecting the dehalogenation performance, and speculated a hypothetical model for the interaction of different functional bacteria. Our research contributed guidelines and references for the development of efficient dehalogenating bacterial agents, and provided scientific theoretical and technical support for promoting the maximum efficiency of bioremediation of organohalogenated sites.

Chromatin modifiers: A new class of pollutants with potential epigenetic effects revealed by in vitro assays and transcriptomic analyses

A great variety of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been used extensively and become widespread in the environment nowadays. Limited mammalian studies have shown that certain EDCs may target chromosome and epigenome of the germline, leading to adverse effects in subsequent generations, despite these progenies having never been exposed to the EDC before. However, the underlying mechanisms of chromosomal changes induced by these pollutants remain poorly known. Using the human ovarian granulosa tumor cell line COV434 as a model, we investigated and compared the transcriptomic changes induced by nine EDCs with diverse chemical structures (i.e. BDE-47, BPA, BP-3, DEHP, DHP, EE2, TCS, TDCPP and NP), to inquire if there is any common epigenetic modification associated with reproductive functions induced by these EDCs. Our results showed that COV434 cells were more responsive to BP-3, NP, DEHP and EE2, and more importantly, these four EDCs altered the expression of gene clusters related to DNA damage response, cell cycle, proliferation, and chromatin remodeling, which can potentially lead to epigenetic modifications and transgenerational inheritance. Furthermore, dysregulation of similar gene clusters was common in DEHP and NP treatments. Bioinformatics analysis further revealed that BP-3 disturbed signaling pathways associated with reproductive functions, whereas alterations in telomere-related pathways were highlighted upon EE2 exposure. Overall, this study highlighted chromatin modifications caused by a class of chemicals which that may potentially lead to epigenetic changes and transgenerational reproductive impairments.

Long-Term Monitoring of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins (Sousa chinensis) from the Pearl River Estuary Reveals High Risks for Calves due to Maternal Exposure

Although many studies have documented the wide occurrence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in cetaceans, little evidence exists regarding the detrimental effects of PBDE exposure on calf death rates for free-ranging cetaceans. This study analyzed life-history-associated PBDE bioaccumulation patterns in 128 stranding Indo-Pacific humpback dolphin (Sousa chinensis) samples over an 18-year timespan from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE). In comparison to the records of PBDE levels in cetaceans worldwide, the median levels of PBDEs (median = 10600 ng g^-1 lw, range = 721-50900 ng g^-1 lw) in all samples were the highest to date. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that adult males (median = 16100 ng g^-1 lw, range = 4070-50900 ng g^-1 lw) and calves (12000 ng g^-1 lw, range = 1250-35300 ng g^-1 lw) both had the highest levels of PBDEs compared to the rest of the age/sex groups (p < 0.05). Concentrations of PBDEs in noncalves significantly decreased over the studied period, while those in calves had a slightly increasing trend, which may be due to different exposure routes via fish or milk, respectively. A significant and positive relationship was found between annual calf stranding death rates and body-length-adjusted PBDE concentrations in calves (r = 0.62, p < 0.05), suggesting that maternal exposure of calves to elevated levels of PBDEs may have contributed to the high annual stranding death rates of calves in the last two decades.

Tissue-specific and stereoselective accumulation of Dechlorane Plus isomers in two predator fish in a laboratory feeding study

The tissue-specific bioaccumulation of Dechlorane Plus (DP) isomers was investigated in two predator fish species (redtail catfish, RF; and oscar fish, OF) that were feeding on tiger barb (TB), which was exposed to syn-DP and anti-DP isomers. The biotransformation potential of DP isomers was examined by in vitro metabolism using fish liver microsomes. No difference in accumulation behaviors of DP isomers was observed between RF and OF, and the accumulation of both syn- and anti-DP isomers exhibiting a linear increase trend with the exposure time in all fish tissues. The assimilation efficiencies and depuration rates for syn-DP and anti-DP were determined to be the highest in the liver. Biomagnification factors (BMFs) for both syn-DP and anti-DP were higher than one in the serum and gastrointestinal tract of fish, whereas were less than one in the other tissues. The wet-weight concentrations of DP isomers in tissues were significantly correlated with the lipid contents in both fish species, indicating that the tissue distribution of DP isomers occurred through passive diffusion to the lipid compartments in vivo. Tissue-specific compositions of DP isomers were observed, with anti-DP selectively accumulating in the liver, gonad, serum, and gills, whilst syn-DP in the carcass and GI tract. However, after being normalized of all tissues, the fish showed no selective accumulation of DP isomers during the exposure period, and selective accumulation of syn-DP was observed during the depuration period. No potential DP metabolites were detected in the fish tissues and in vitro metabolism systems. The main cause of this stereoselective DP isomer accumulation could have been the selective excretion of anti-DP isomer through the fish feces.

Residues of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in a wild predatory fish from an e-waste site in South China between 2009 and 2016

Crude electronic waste (e-waste) recycling has been banned due to the serious environmental pollution it caused, leaving many abandoned e-waste sites. However, information on the current levels and associated ecological risks of e-waste-derived contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in e-waste site is limited. Wild fish, because they can accumulate high pollutant levels, are suitable indicators for environmental pollution monitoring and has been widely employed as biomonitoring. In this study, we investigated the changes in the levels and profiles of PCBs in a wild fish species, the northern snakehead (Channa argus), before (2009) and after (2016) the ban of crude e-waste recycling from a typical e-waste recycling site in South China. The mean total PCB concentration in the northern snakehead sampled in 2016 (343 ng/g ww) declined by 75% compared with that (1410 ng/g ww) in 2009. The contributions of less chlorinated congeners (tri-CBs and tetra-CBs) in the northern snakehead tended to decrease over the years, indicating that the lighter congeners are more easily eliminated than the heavier ones in the environment. Our findings suggested no fresh PCB input in these years, as well as the positive impacts of laws and regulations on the prohibition of e-waste recycling. The ecological risk assessment suggested that PCB exposure may have median to high risks to the wild fish and fish-eating wildlife that inhabit the e-waste site, even after the ban of crude e-waste recycling activities.

Halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in marine fish from the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea: Levels, distribution, and health risk assessment

Six marine fish species, collected from the Beibu Gulf were statistically analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs). The concentrations of ∑₁₄PBDEs, ∑₂₆PCBs, and ∑₆DDTs ranged from 11.8-1431, 8.74-495, and 9.47-1263 ng g^-1 lipid weight (lw), respectively. In general, PBDEs were the predominant halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in the Beibu Gulf. The homologues profiles of Mugil cephalus and Trichiurus nanhaiensis differed from other four species. For example, the contributions of deca-BDEs in M. cephalus (14 %) and T. nanhaiensis (1 %) were lower than other four species (56 %). The ratio of (DDE + DDD)/ΣDDTs in all samples was >0.5, indicating that DDTs were mainly derived from historical residues. Intakes of HOPs through the consumption of the marine fish from the study areas might not subject residents of the coastal areas in the Beibu Gulf to health risks.

Biomarkers responses and polybrominated diphenyl ethers and their methoxylated analogs measured in Sparus aurata from the Lagoon of Bizerte, Tunisia

This study aimed to the examination of the levels and effects of organobromine compounds (polybrominated diphenyl ethers: PBDEs and methoxylated brominated diphenyl ethers: MeO-PBDEs), in Sparus aurata native to the Lagoon of Bizerte. For that, different biomarkers of exposure (somatic indices, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activities) and effect (malondialdehyde level, histopathologic alterations, and DNA damage) as well as pollutant levels were measured in specimens collected from this impacted ecosystem and the Mediterranean Sea as a reference site. Bizerte Lagoon PBDE fish levels were higher than the Mediterranean Sea, whereas MeO-PBDEs were higher in the reference site. Fish from Bizerte Lagoon presented a higher hepatosomatic index, lower catalase and superoxide dismutase activity, higher level of malondialdehyde, and higher percentage of DNA tail in comparison to fish from the reference area. The histological study of the liver indicated substantial lesions in fish from the polluted site. The results showed strong positive correlations between the concentrations of the PBDE or MeO-PBDE and the MDA and DNA tail % levels and negative correlations for the activities of enzymes of SOD and CAT. Consequently, these findings could suggest a potential link between exposure to these pollutants and the observed biomarker responses in the Bizerte Lagoon seabream. Taken together, these results highlight the importance of biomarker selection and the selected sentinel fish species as useful tools for biomonitoring of aquatic pollution.

Species-specific debromination of BDE99 in teleost fish: The relationship between debromination ability and bioaccumulation patterns of PBDEs

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are known to be broken down by debromination reactions in the natural environment, such as by photolysis, microbial and metabolic processes. Although species-specific debromination of PBDEs by fish has also been reported, it has only rarely been studied from the phylogenetic perspective. The objective of this study is to reveal the factors affecting species-specific debromination through validation between the bioaccumulation of PBDEs in muscle tissue and the ability to debrominate BDE99. As environmental observations, PBDE concentrations in muscle tissues were analyzed in 25 wild fish (Cyprinidae, Gobiidae and others). As in vitro experiments, debromination experiments were conducted using the hepatic microsomes of 21 fish species. Significant amounts of BDE99 were detected in almost none of the Cyprinidae. A relatively higher debromination ability was confirmed in the Cyprinidae in in vitro experiments. The Cyprinidae thus appears to be a family with high debromination ability. BDE99 has been detected in some goby species but not others. This pattern was also seen in in vitro experiments, suggesting that debromination ability is not consistent within the Gobiidae. In further quantitative comparisons, kinetic parameters such as K_m and v_max were determined for selected fish species. The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and the Japanese crucian carp (Carassius cuvieri), both Cyprinidae, showed higher v_max values, whereas v_max values among three Gobiidae diverged widely. A comparison of field observations and in vitro experiments, revealed the bioaccumulation ratio of BDE99 to be affected by the BDE99 debromination ability of each fish species. This is the first report on classification of BDE99 accumulation ratio by debromination ability and a phylogenetic species comparison based on kinetic parameters for debromination reactions of PBDEs by fish.

Halogenated flame retardants in wild, prey-sized mud carp from an e-waste recycling site in South China, 2006-2016: Residue dynamics and ecological risk assessment

The crude e-waste recycling has been regulated in China since the late 2000s; however, information on the recent levels and the ecological risks of e-waste derived contaminants such as halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) in the e-waste sites are limited. We therefore examined the concentrations of several HFRs in wild, prey-sized mud carps collected from a typical e-waste site in 2006, 2011 and 2016, to understand the exposure dynamics and ecological risk of these chemicals. Several ecological and biological parameters including δ¹⁵N, δ¹³C, body size and lipid content of the fish were also examined, to ensure an overall uniformity of the sample set among the sampling years. Among the HFRs measured, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) were detected at the highest concentrations (contributing >90% to ∑HFRs), followed by Dechlorane Plus (DPs), polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), and alternative brominated flame retardants (ABFRs). The fish concentrations of ∑PBDEs, ∑PBBs and ∑DPs significantly dropped by 65%, 57% and 53% from 2006 to 2011, and 12%, 74% and 51% from 2011 to 2016, respectively; likely reflecting the positive impact of the environmental regulations on crude e-waste recycling. The ∑ABFRs concentrations were also decreased by 80% from 2006 to 2011, but increased by 127% from 2011 to 2016; suggesting possible fresh input of these novel HFRs in recent years. In addition to the changes in the HFR concentrations, contaminant profiles in the fish were also changed, possibly due to environmental degradation of the HFRs. Despite our conservative method of risk assessment, we found that PBDEs posed an important risk both for the mud carp and for piscivorous wildlife that inhabit the e-waste site.

Perchlorate in shellfish from South China Sea and implications for human exposure

Shellfish can absorb and accumulate contaminants. The consumption of shellfish could expose humans to pollutants and increase related health risk. Perchlorate (ClO₄^-) is a ubiquitous pollutant and could affect thyroid functions, especially for children and pregnant women. However, knowledge on the contamination of perchlorate in aquatic food such as shellfish remains limited. This study aimed to investigate the abundances of perchlorate in shellfish from South China Sea and to assess human exposure risks. A total of 178 shellfish samples from eight species were collected from offshore aquaculture waters in South China Sea. Perchlorate was detected in 99.4% of them, suggesting widespread pollution in coastal waters. Concentrations of perchlorate ranged from not detected (N.D.) to 71.5 μg kg^-1, with a median value of 4.33 μg kg^-1. Estimated daily intake (EDI) and hazard quotient (HQ) were used to assess human exposure dose and health risks, respectively. The HQ values were determined to be less than 1, indicating no significant health risks to local residents via shellfish consumption. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate perchlorate contamination in South China shellfish and assess potential human risks.

Determination of low-density polyethylene-water partition coefficients for novel halogenated flame retardants with the large volume model and co-solvent model

The partition coefficient (K_pew) of an analyte between low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film and water is a critical parameter for measuring freely dissolved concentrations of the analyte with PE passive sampling devices. Measuring log K_pew for super hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) have been proven extremely difficult. The present study developed a large volume model for measuring log K_pew of super HOCs, i.e., novel halogenated flame retardants (NHFRs). Results showed that the measured log K_pew values of selected PAHs and PCBs obtained by the large volume model were in line with those from the co-solvent model and the literature data within less 0.3 log units of difference, while those of NHFRs (6.27-7.34) except for hexachlorocyclopentadienyldibromocyclooctane (HCDBCO) and Decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) were significantly lower than those (6.51-8.89) from the co-solvent model. A curvilinear relationship was observed between log K_pew and log K_ow of all target compounds, with the turning point at log K_ow = ∼8.0 in the large volume model, but that was not found for the co-solvent model. These can be attributed to the large molecular volumes (> 450 Å³) for NHFRs, which require high Gibbs free energy to penetrate into the inside structures of LDPE in the large volume model. However, the solvent swelling effects in the co-solvent model needs to be investigated. Therefore, the large volume model is robust to determine the K_pew values of super HOCs for facilitating the application of aquatic passive sampling techniques.

Occurrence of Dechlorane series flame retardants in sediments from the Pearl River Delta, South China

Dechlorane series flame retardants (DECs), e.g. Dechlorane plus (DP), have reportedly showed an increase in consumption since the phase-out of traditional brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Here we investigated DP and 7 structural analogues, as well as its 2 dechlorinated products in 76 surficial sediments from the Pearl River Delta (PRD), one of the three important manufacturing bases of China. The concentration of Σ₈DECs varied from 28.1 to 38,000 pg g^-1 dw in the PRD sediments, dominated by DP and Mirex. Spatially, sedimental DP concentrations were significantly and positively correlated with the municipal gross domestic product (GDP), population and sewage discharge of the PRD cities, but were insignificantly related to their industrial outputs. This indicates that DP in the PRD sediments mainly originated from urban activities instead of industrial ones. Although Mirex has been restricted for several decades, it demonstrated ubiquity in the PRD and considerably high levels in several termite control hot-spots (up to 34,200 pg g^-1), implying its massive historical use in this subtropical region. Other DECs, however, exhibited quite low abundances, implying their limited applications in this region. In comparison to the historical data, sedimental DP concentrations presented an increasing trend in most rivers in the PRD except the West River. The fractions of anti-DP (f_anti) showed insignificant deviations from its technical value, suggesting that no obvious anti-DP transformation occurred in most PRD sediments. However, anti-Cl₁₁-DP, an important dechlorination product of anti-DP, was ubiquitously found in the PRD sediments, and its concentrations were significantly and positively associated with those of anti-DP. Therefore, anti-Cl₁₁-DP in the PRD sediments was deemed as the impurity co-emitted with anti-DP rather than its dechlorination byproduct. Considering its ubiquity, increasing trend and persistence, DP in the PRD environments merits continuous concerns.

Investigating the spatial distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls in sediment in the Pearl River Delta, South China

One hundred forty-three surface sediment (0-5 cm depth) samples were collected from locations representing industrialized areas, less-industrialized areas, and e-waste recycling areas in the Pearl River Delta (PRD). The spatial distribution of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and their potential adverse effects on aquatic organisms were investigated. The average PCB concentration in the less-industrialized areas (background) in the PRD was approximately 10 ng/g dry weight (dw), which was generally half that found in the industrialized areas (approximately 22 ng/g dw). Severe PCB contamination, with concentrations ranging from 1000 to 26500 ng/g dw, was found in pond sediments collected from e-waste recycling areas. It is very likely that such contamination would have had adverse effects on the aquatic biota there. PCBs in the e-waste recycling areas were dominated by penta- and hex-PCB congeners, which made them significantly different from those found in other regions, where tri- and tetra-PCB congeners were predominant. Higher abundances of less chlorinated congeners were seen in the less-industrialized areas compared to the industrialized areas. Differences in the transport abilities of different congeners, together with dechlorination of higher chlorinated congeners, is the most likely reasons for this.

Human exposure to PBDEs in e-waste areas: A review

Polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are commonly added to electronic products for flame-retardation effects, and are attracting more and more attentions due to their potential toxicity, durability and bioaccumulation. This study conducts a sysmtematic review to understand the human exposure to PBDEs from e-waste recycling, especially exploring the exposure pathways and human burden of PBDEs as well as investigating the temporal trend of PBDEs exposure worldwide. The results show that the particular foods (contaminated fish, poultry, meat and breast milk) ingestion, indoor dust ingestion and indoor air inhalation may be key factors leading to human health risks of PBDEs exposure in e-waste recycling regions. Residents and some vulnerable groups (occupational workers and children) in e-waste recycling areas may face higher exposure levels and health risks. PBDE exposure is closely related to exposure level, exposure duration, e-waste recycling methods, and dietary customs. High levels of PBDEs are found in human tissues (breast milk, hair, blood (serum), placenta and other tissues) in e-waste areas, at far higher levels than in other areas. Existing data indicate that PBDE exposure levels do not present any apparent downward trend, and will possibly cause serious human diseases. More epidemiological studies are still needed to provide a solid basis for health risk assessment.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers, decabromodiphenyl ethane and dechlorane plus in aquatic products from the Yellow River Delta, China

Aquatic biota including fish, shrimp and bivalves were collected from the Yellow River Delta (YRD), China to investigate the levels, composition profile and dietary exposure of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and dechlorane plus (DP). The concentrations of PBDEs, DBDPE and DP in the organisms ranged from 5.3 to 149, not detected (nd) - 49, and 0.5-29 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. Higher levels of PBDEs and DP were found in mullet (Liza haematocheila).PBDEs were the major pollutants and BDE 209 was the predominant congener of PBDEs suggesting the great production and application of deca-BDE in YRD. The average f_anti values for different species were similar to or a little lower than that of the commercial DP, suggesting syn-DP might be selectively accumulated by the organisms. The estimated daily intake values of HFRs suggested consuming fish was the main pathway for the exposure of halogenated flame retardants.

Residual effects of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in an e-waste recycling area compared with heavy metal pollution

Disposal of e-waste is a global issue and has caused serious pollution in recycling areas. Most of these areas had once developed intensive agriculture and might incur organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) pollution. However, this used to be neglected. Here we discuss the joint effects via analyzing OCPs and heavy metals in a notorious e-waste recycling area. The OCPs showed higher (p = 0.005) pollution levels in soils from agricultural zone than in core e-waste recycling zone, which is opposite for heavy metals (p = 0.02). The OCPs and heavy metals showed the highest concentrations in the open burning site locating in the boundary between the e-waste and agricultural zones. Composition profiles further indicated that the land use changes from agriculture to e-waste industry might accelerate the release of buried OCPs. Worse still, the OCPs and heavy metals might pose carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to local residents, respectively.

Alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs) in green mussels from the south China sea

Restrictions of legacy brominated flame retardants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) and polybrominated biphenyl (PBB), have resulted in increased usage of alternative halogenated flame retardants (AHFRs). Consequently, AHFRs contamination has caused a major concern in the scientific community. However, there is limited information on their presence in marine mussels. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels collected from 22 locations in the northern South China Sea (SCS). Our results revealed that ∑AHFRs were ubiquitous in green mussels with concentrations in the range of 1.08-7.71 ng/g lipid weight (lw). Among target AHFRs, hexabromobenzene (HBB), decabromodiphenyl (DBDPE) and dechlorane plus (DP) were predominant with their mean values of 1.19, 1.00 and 0.82 ng/g lw, respectively. There were negligible stereoisomer enrichments of DP in green mussels based on f_anti values, indicating a limited bioaccumulation and metabolism of DP in green mussels. In comparison with other locations, concentrations of the AHFRs in green mussels determined here were at moderate levels. Additionally, there were significant linear relationships between some AHFRs (e.g., HBB and PBEB), suggesting their similar commercial applications and sources in the environment. The estimated daily intakes of AHFRs through consumption of green mussels by the local population in South China were 0.05-0.14 ng/kg body weight/day and 0.17-0.44 ng/kg body weight/day based on the mean and 95th concentrations, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, the present study is the first to report AHFRs and dehalogenated products in green mussels.

Occurrence and congener profiles of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in green mussels (Perna viridis) collected from northern South China Sea and the associated potential health risk

Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) contamination has become a major concern over the effects on human health. In the present study, we collected widely consumed green mussels (Perna viridis) samples from the northern South China Sea (NSCS) to investigate the occurrence, spatial distribution, congener profiles as well as potential risk of 18 PBDEs. All the target PBDEs were detected in green mussel samples, indicating their ubiquitous distribution. The concentrations of the total 18 PBDE_S (ΣPBDEs) in all samples varied from 6.96 to 55.6 ng/g lipid weight (lw), with BDE-47 and BDE-209 being the predominant PBDE congeners. Overall, the ΣPBDEs pollution in green mussels from NSCS was at a moderate to high level in comparison with the PBDEs pollution worldwide. The dietary exposure of the local population in South China to PBDEs via consuming green mussels was estimated to be 0.30-0.80 ng/kg body weight (bw)/day. Evaluation of the exposure risk for BDE-47, 99, 153 and 209 indicated that health risks due to green mussel consumption are substantially lower than the U.S. EPA minimum concern level.

Spatial Distribution of Organophosphorus and Brominated Flame Retardants in Surface Water, Sediment, Groundwater, and Wild Fish in Chengdu, China

The occurrence and spatial distribution of 13 organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), 11 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and eight novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were investigated in Jinjiang river water, sediment, crucian carp, and groundwater in Chengdu, China. OPFRs were predominant and ubiquitous contaminants in the Jinjiang river water, sediment, groundwater, fish muscle, fish gills, and viscera with concentrations ranging from 19.1 to 533 ng L^-1, 12.5 to 253 ng g^-1, 11.7 to 149 ng L^-1, 114 to 2108 ng g^-1 lipid weight (lw), 220 to 638 ng g^-1 lw, and 116 to 1356 ng g^-1 lw, respectively. The halogenated OPFRs were the primary pollutant in the Jinjiang river water samples, whereas nonhalogenated OPFRs were the dominant OPFRs in the sediments. Brominated flame retardants were not detected in the groundwater, whereas the NBFRs detected in aquatic environment at low frequency. The ΣPBDEs ranged from n.d. to 23.4 ng L^-1 and n.d. to 48.7 ng g^-1 in the Jinjiang river water and sediment, respectively. BDE-209 was dominant in the sediment samples with concentrations ranging from n.d. to 47.2 ng g^-1. The PBDEs levels in the muscle, gills, and viscera of the crucian carp ranged from 10.6 to 90.6 ng g^-1 lw, n.d. to 75.6 ng g^-1 lw, and n.d. to 219 ng g^-1 lw, respectively. BDE-47, chlorinated, and alkyl OPFRs were the main contaminants in the fish samples.

Occurrence and Species-Specific Distribution of Plastic Debris in Wild Freshwater Fish from the Pearl River Catchment, China

Freshwater systems are an important source and vector of plastic debris found in oceans. However, plastic debris in freshwater organisms has not been well studied. The occurrence, characterization, polymer composition, and seasonal and spatial distribution of plastic debris were investigated in 9 species of wild freshwater fish from the Pearl River catchment, south China. Approximately 50% of the total fish (n = 279) belonging to 9 species were found to ingest plastic debris with an average abundance of 7.0 ± 23.8 items/individual, indicating wide plastic contamination in the Pearl River catchment. Plastic debris were predominantly transparent or white in color, fibers or fragments in shape, and polyethylene, polypropylene, ethylene-propylene copolymer (PE-PP), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in polymer composition. A species-specific distribution of the plastic debris was observed in terms of abundance, shape, and polymer composition. Redbelly tilapia had the highest (27.4 ± 54.0 items/individual), whereas common carp had the lowest (0.2 ± 0.4 items/individual) abundance of the plastic debris in their gastrointestinal tracts. Fibers of PET were predominant in the freshwater species except in barbel chubs, which had mostly PE-PP fragments. Omnivores and bottom-dwellers were more likely to ingest plastic debris. Seasonal variation was observed, with generally higher abundance of plastic debris in fish collected in the dry season than in the wet season. Environ Toxicol Chem 2019;38:1504-1513. © 2019 SETAC.

Organophosphorus flame retardants in fish from Rivers in the Pearl River Delta, South China

Twelve organophosphorus flame retardants (PFRs) were detected in the muscle of 3 species of fish, mud carp (Cirrhinus molitorella), tilapia (Tilapia nilotica), and plecostomus (Hypostomus plecostomus), from rivers in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region. The total concentrations of PFRs in the mud carp, tilapia, and plecostomus ranged from 2.3 to 16, 3.4 to 16, and 3.5 to 30 ng/g wet weight (ww), respectively. Generally, tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP), tris (2-chloro-isopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), and tri-n-butyl phosphate (TnBP) were the dominant compounds of the PFRs, collectively accounting for up to 90% of the total PFR levels. Concentrations of PFRs were significantly higher in the plecostomus than in the mud carp and tilapia (p < 0.05), which could be explained by differences in habitat and feeding habits of the fish species. High concentrations of PFRs were found mainly in the Guangzhou section of the Pearl River (site P1, P2, and P3) and site B3, which was similar to our previous study of PFRs in sediment from the Pearl River Delta, indicating a relatively high level of PFRs pollution in these regions. The estimated daily intake (EDI) of total PFRs from consumption of fish was 17 ng/kg bw/day to 98 ng/kg bw/day for adults and children, which was three to four orders of magnitude lower than reference dose values.

Halogenated organic pollutants in sediments and organisms from mangrove wetlands of the Jiulong River Estuary, South China

Eighteen sediments and four biota species were collected from mangrove wetlands of the Jiulong River Estuary (JRE) in South China to investigate the distribution of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), dechlorane plus (DP) and 1,2-bis(2,4,6-tribromophenoxy)ethane (BTBPE). Concentrations of ΣDDTs, ΣPCBs, ΣPBDEs, DBDPE, DP, and BTBPE in mangrove sediments ranged from 21 to 84, 0.52-2.5, 9.0-66, 5.1-32, 0.05-0.14, and 0.03-0.25 ng/g dry weight, respectively. Levels of ΣDDTs, ΣPCBs, ΣPBDEs, DBDPE and DP in mangrove biota ranged from 950 to 30000, 56-400, 8.0-35, nd-20 and 0.44-3.1 ng/g lipid weight, respectively. DDTs were the predominant halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) in mangrove sediments from the JRE, while PBDEs were the major HOPs in mangrove sediments from the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), suggesting that sediments in JRE and PRE had different sources of HOPs. The dominance of DDTs was found in both mangrove sediments and biota from the JRE, indicating that HOPs in JRE environment mainly come from agricultural sources. The biota-sediment accumulation factors for DDTs and PCBs were significantly higher than those of PBDEs, DBDPE and DP, suggesting high bioavailability of DDTs and PCBs in mangrove biota. Trophic magnification factors for DDTs, PCBs, PBDEs, and DP were 10.5, 3.00, 2.66 and 1.23, respectively, indicating their potential of biomagnification in mangrove food webs.

Contamination of organohalogen chemicals and hepatic steatosis in common kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) breeding at a nature reserve near e-waste recycling sites in South China

Severe pollution of organohalogen compounds (OHCs) including PBDEs, PCBs and DDTs is demonstrated in e-waste recycling sites and metropolis in South China, but relatively little is known of their impacts on wildlife that inhabits nature reserves in this region, especially those located at the neighborhood areas of e-waste recycling sites. In the present study, PBDEs, PCBs and DDTs as well as liver histological changes were examined in common kingfisher breeding at a nature reserve (Shimentai National Nature Reserve, SNNR) near a notorious e-waste recycling site in South China. Mean ∑PBDEs (84.9 ng/g lipid weight), ∑PCBs (397 ng/g) and ∑TEQs (total toxic equivalent of coplanar PCBs, 2.68 ng/g) concentrations in kingfishers from SNNR were approximately 2-, 5-, and 4-fold higher than those detected in a reference population, respectively; suggesting contamination of the e-waste-derived OHCs in SNNR. Mean ∑DDTs concentration (2150 ng/g) in kingfishers from SNNR was also higher (~2-fold) than that from the reference samples. While ∑DDTs dominated the composition of the OHCs at both sampling sites, ∑PCBs was also important in kingfishers from SNNR, averaging 15% of ∑OHCs. Histological examination of the liver showed steatosis occurred in 60% of the kingfishers from SNNR. Birds with hepatic steatosis had significantly (p = 0.03) higher ∑TEQs than those without steatosis. Similar trends were also found for ∑PCBs and ∑DDTs, although it is not statistically significant. It therefore seems likely that the hepatic steatosis were associated with the relatively high body-burden of OHCs, although the possibility of other factors resulting in hepatic steatosis cannot be ruled out.

Species-specific debromination of polybromodiphenyl ethers determined by deiodinase activity in fish

A combination of previous studies and the present study indicated species-specific debromination of polybromodiphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in teleost fish. Three situations of debromination were found, namely rapid debromination represented by debromination of BDE 99 to BDE 47 observed in common carp, tilapia, crucian carp, and oscar fish; slow debromination represented by debromination of BDE 99 to BDE 49 observed in the abovementioned fish and rainbow trout, salmon, and snakehead; and no or minor debromination observed in catfish. The results of experiments on cofactors, inhibitors, and substrate competitors indicated that activities of outer ring deiodinase of 3, 3', 5'-triiodothyronine (type I deiodinase), which cannot be inhibited by 6-propyl-2-thiouracil, were responsible for the rapid debromination, and the outer ring deiodinase of thyroxine (type II deiodinase) regulated the slow debromination. The debromination of BDE 99 to BDE 49 was more common, but occurred at a much lower rate (approximately 100 times lower) than the debromination of BDE 99 to BDE 47. This was because the activity of type II deiodinase was nearly two orders of magnitude lower than that of type I deiodinase in the fish species studied. Further studies on debromination of PBDEs and properties of deiodinase in more species are needed to confirm the hypothesis.

A health-based regulatory chain framework to evaluate international pesticide groundwater regulations integrating soil and drinking water standards

Pesticide residues in groundwater, mainly transported from contaminated soil, may threaten drinking water sources and cause adverse health effects. Therefore, pesticide groundwater standards were implemented by international environmental agencies to ensure the quality of groundwater, which serves as the direct drinking water source in many countries. However, regulatory inconsistencies are always found among groundwater, soil, drinking water, and even health standards due to the lack of communication among the regulatory processes. This study first developed a health-based regulatory chain framework to analyze pesticide groundwater regulations integrating soil, drinking water, and health regulations. Six regulatory indexes associated with probabilistic risk assessments and pesticide transport modeling were constructed to evaluate the performance of pesticide groundwater regulations identified from 56 countries. Worldwide pesticide groundwater regulations were analyzed by quantifying the impact on the downstream (exposure pathways in general) pesticide drinking water standards and human health and the influence from upstream (environmental pathways in general) soil regulations. The results indicated that in general, worldwide pesticide soil regulations do not encompass a sufficient number of pesticides or provide appropriate standard values to be compatible with groundwater regulations. The computed indexes between pesticide groundwater and drinking water regulations indicated more positive results than soil regulations because most European nations have groundwater regulations that are compatible with those of drinking water. However, most pesticide groundwater regulations could not protect human health according to the health-based indexes. Hopefully, the regulatory framework developed in this study will help environmental agencies comprehensively evaluate and establish pesticide groundwater regulations.

Occurrence of Dechlorane Plus and related compounds in catfish (Silurus spp.) from rivers in France

Dechlorane related compounds (DRCs), including Dechlorane Plus (syn-DP and anti-DP), Dechlorane-601, -602, -603 and Chlordene Plus (CP), constitute a group of polychlorinated flame retardants (FRs) that are still of industrial use. In particular, DRCs have been detected in various environmental matrices and in different aquatic and terrestrial biota, thus exhibiting bioaccumulation and biomagnification potentials. The present study aimed at producing first occurrence data of a range of DRCs in Silurus spp. samples from different rivers located in France. Determination was carried out by gas chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry after a sample clean-up based on a multilayer silica column and gel permeation chromatography. The concentration of monitored ΣDRCs ranged from 1.58 to 408 pg g^-1 wet weight (54-11100 pg g^-1 lipid weight). The fractional abundance of syn- and anti-DP stereoisomers was similar to that reported by other studies with an average equal to 0.60. Dec-601 was not detected in any sample. Detection frequencies ranged between 34 and 100% for other DRCs. Investigated correlations between DRCs and polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) suggest a link with lipid content but independent contamination sources.

Legacy and emerging organohalogenated contaminants in wild edible aquatic organisms: Implications for bioaccumulation and human exposure

Highly industrialized and urbanized watersheds may receive various contaminants from anthropogenic activities. In this study, legacy and emerging organohalogenated contaminants (OHCs) were measured in edible wild aquatic organisms sampled from the Pearl River and Dongjiang River in a representative industrial and urban region in China. High concentrations of target contaminants were observed. The Pearl River exhibited higher concentrations of OHCs than the Dongjiang River due to high industrialization and urbanization. Agrochemical inputs remained an important source of OHCs in industrialized and urbanized watershed in China, but vigilance is needed for recent inputs of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) originated from e-waste recycling activities. Bioaccumulation of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane and its metabolites (DDTs), hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs), PCBs, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and Dechlorane Plus (DP) was biological species- and compound-specific, which can be largely attributed to metabolic capability for xenobiotics. No health risk was related to the daily intake of DDTs, HCHs, and PBDEs via consumption of wild edible species investigated for local residents. However, the current exposure to PCBs through consuming fish is of potential health concern.

Stereoselective bioaccumulation of syn- and anti-Dechlorane plus isomers in different tissues of common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Common carps (Cyprinus carpio) were exposed to syn- and anti-Dechlorane Plus (DP) isomers to investigate absorption, tissue distribution, and stereoselective bioaccumulation of DP isomers. The absorption efficiencies of anti-DP in the gastrointestinal system were higher than those of syn-DP. A linear accumulation was found for both isomers in all fish tissues except for serum; and the liver and gill exhibited the highest and lowest DP assimilation efficiency, respectively. The elimination of DP isomers in all tissues followed first-order kinetics, with the fastest depuration rate occurring in the liver and serum. The biomagnification factors (BMFs) of both isomers were less than one in all tissues, except for serum. Anti-DP was preferably accumulated in the liver, gill, and serum, whereas syn-DP was selectively accumulated in the carcass and gastrointestinal tract. As a whole, fish did not show selective accumulation of the syn- or anti-DP isomer in the uptake stage, whereas a selective accumulation of syn-DP in fish was observed during the depuration period, which could be due to a selective excretion of anti-DP. Metabolism cannot be ruled out as a possible reason considering the high f_anti values and the high elimination rate of DPs in the liver.

How do measured PBDE and HCBD levels in river fish compare to the European Environmental Quality Standards?

This study evaluates the current situation regarding PBDE and HBCD levels in different river fish species. We collected published data in the last five years in different countries around the world. These levels of pollution were compared with Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) for biota established by the European Directive in the field of water policy. Although HBCD situation is not critical, with only some values exceeding the limit about 5 times, the PBDE levels clearly exceeded the established EQS, with 25% of fish samples exceeding up to ten thousand times. Although it is expected that levels of pollution by PBDEs will decrease over the next years due to the ban in their use, it is not expected that this decrease will reach the EQS values by the end of 2021, as demanded by the European Directive. Hence, it is necessary to implement new strategies in order to minimize the impact of PBDEs on the environment.

Determining equilibrium partition coefficients between lipid/protein and polydimethylsiloxane for highly hydrophobic organic contaminants using preloaded disks

Bioaccumulation of hydrophobic organic contaminants is of great concern and understanding their partitioning to biological phases is crucial for estimating their bioaccumulation potential. The estimation, however, was of large uncertainty for highly hydrophobic organic contaminants (HHOCs) with log K_OW>9 due to the challenge of quantifying their water concentrations. In the present study, partition coefficients between polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and storage lipid (K_SL,PDMS), membrane lipid (K_ML,PDMS) and protein (K_pro,PDMS) were measured for 21 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), 14 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), dechlorane plus (DP) and decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE), covering log K_OW from 5.07 to 11.6, using a preloaded PDMS depletion method. The values of K_SL,PDMS, K_ML,PDMS and K_pro,PDMS were in the ranges of 5.36-52.5, 0.286-11.8 and 0.067-2.62g/g, respectively, being relatively constant although their K_OW values extend more than six orders of magnitude. The relative sorption capacity of the biological phases showed storage lipid was the dominant sorption phase in biota, followed by membrane lipid and protein was the lowest. The K_PDMS,pro values of the compounds with log K_OW<9 were similar (0.382-14.9g/g) regardless of the thickness of preloaded PDMS disks (58-209μm). For HHOCs, however, K_PDMS,pro values dropped when thinner PDMS disks were used, as a result of slow diffusion of HHOCs in PDMS. The K_PDMS,pro values of HHOCs measured by 58-μm PDMS disks ranged from 1.78 to 6.85g/g, which was consistent with compounds with log K_OW<9. This validated that partition coefficients between PDMS and biological phases were independent of chemical hydrophobicity, showing the advantage of using PDMS-based methods to directly estimate bioaccumulation potential of HHOCs.

Species-specific and structure-dependent debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ether in fish by in vitro hepatic metabolism

To explore the cause of species-specific differences and structure-activity relationships in the debromination of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in fish, a series of in vitro measurements of hepatic metabolism of PBDE were made using crucian carp (Carassius carassius) and catfish (Silurus asotus) and the activity of deiodinase in liver microsomes was measured. Debromination was observed in the crucian carp but not in the catfish. No difference was found in total deiodinase activity despite the activity of type 1 deiodinase in crucian carp being twice that of catfish. It is difficult to determine whether the differences in deiodinase activity were responsible for the species-specific differences observed. In crucian carp, penta-brominated diphenyl ether congeners exhibited the highest debromination rates, and the transformation rate decreased with an increasing number of substituted bromines. Adjacent bromine substitution in the phenyl ring was a necessary, but insufficient, condition for debromination in crucian carp. Doubly flanked bromine was always preferentially removed, while single-flanked bromine, meta-substituted bromine, was debrominated the most, followed by para- and then ortho-bromine. No debromination was observed for single-flanked bromine when there was a symmetrical structure with (2, 4, 6) bromine substitutions in 1 phenyl ring, indicating that this structure can improve resistance to debromination metabolism. Halogenated organic pollutants in marine biota from the Xuande Atoll, South China Sea: Levels, biomagnification and dietary exposure

Six marine biota species were collected from the Xuande Atoll, South China Sea to investigate the bioaccumulation of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and dechlorane plus (DP). Pike conger (Muraenesox talabonoides) had the highest concentrations of halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs) among the six marine biota species. DDTs were the predominant HOPs, followed by PCBs and PBDEs, with minor contributions of DBDPE and DP. Twenty-one percent of samples had ratios of (DDE+DDD)/ΣDDTs lower than 0.5, implying the presence of fresh DDT inputs in the environment of the Xuande Atoll. The biomagnification factor values for DDTs, PCBs, PBDEs and DP were higher than 1, suggesting biomagnification of these contaminants in the marine food chains. Consumption of seafood from the Xuande Atoll might not subject local residents in the coastal areas of South China to health risks as far as HOPs are concerned.

Occurrence of halogenated and organophosphate flame retardants in sediment and fish samples from three European river basins

Classic (polybromodiphenyl ethers, PBDEs) and emerging halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) such as decabromodiphenyl ethane (DBDPE) and halogenated norbornenes, as well as organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) were analysed in 52 sediments and 27 fish samples from three European river basins, namely the Evrotas (Greece), the Adige (Italy) and the Sava (Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia). This is the first time that FR levels have been reported in these three European river basins. The highest contamination was found in the Adige and Sava rivers, whereas lower values were obtained for the Evrotas. The levels in sediment samples ranged between 0.25 and 34.0ng/g dw, and between 0.31 and 549ng/g dw, for HFRs and OPFRs respectively. As regards levels in fish, concentrations ranged between 9.32 and 461ng/g lw and between 14.4 and 650ng/g lw, for HFRs and OPFRs, respectively. Thus, whereas OPFR values were higher in sediments, similar concentrations (in the Evrotas) and even lower concentrations than HFRs (Sava) were found for OPFRs in the fish samples, indicating the lower bioaccumulation potential of OPFRs. Biota to sediment accumulation factors (BSAFs) were calculated and higher values were obtained for HFRs compared to those assessed for OPFRs.

Significance of Cooking Oil to Bioaccessibility of Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs) in Raw and Cooked Fish: Implications for Human Health Risk

The present study examined the bioacessibility of DDTs and PBDEs in cooked fish (yellow grouper; Epinephelus awoara) with and without heating using the colon extended physiologically based extraction test. The bioaccessibility of DDTs and PBDEs increased from 60 and 26% in raw fish to 83 and 63%, respectively, after the addition of oil to raw fish. However, they decreased from 83 to 66% and from 63 to 40%, respectively, when oil-added fish were cooked. Human health risk assessment based on bioaccessible concentrations of DDTs and PBDEs in fish showed that the maximum allowable daily fish consumption rates decreased from 25, 59, and 86 g day^-1 to 22, 53, and 77 g day^-1 for children, youths, and adults, respectively, after fish were cooked with oil. These findings indicated that the significance of cooking oil to the bioaccessibility of DDTs and PBDEs in food should be considered in assessments of human health risk.

Polychlorinated biphenyls and organochlorine pesticides in surface sediments from Shantou Bay, China: Sources, seasonal variations and inventories

Sediments from Shantou Bay, China, were analyzed for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) for the first time. The concentrations of PCBs and OCPs were 0.54-55.5ngg^-1 and 2.19-16.9ngg^-1 (dry weight), respectively. Source identification showed that tri-CBs and penta-CBs were manufactured and used in the last century, while usage of antifouling paint might still serve as a significant source of sediment DDT. Concentrations of PCBs and HCHs significantly (p<0.05) increased after wet season, suggesting that atmospheric deposition and surface runoff played an important role in distribution of historical pollutants. Additionally, the adverse biological effects could occasionally occur for DDT in sediments. The mass inventories were preliminarily calculated for PCBs (90.1ngcm^-2 and 0.09tons) and OCPs (61.8ngcm^-2 and 0.062tons) in Shantou Bay, while as part of the "reservoir" of organochlorine compounds to the global ocean, its role cannot be neglected.
