An integrated approach using chemical ecological risk assessment and multi-integrated biomarker indexes approach to assess pollution: A case study of Ruditapes philippinarum in four bays on the Shandong Peninsula in China

The assessment of bioavailability and environmental risk of dissolved and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the seawater of typical bays

The pollution of dissolved and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal waters has been increasing in recent decades. However, limited research has been conducted on the characteristics of dissolved and particulate PAHs in seawater and their associated risk assessment. Here, we focused on the bioavailability and environmental risk of PAHs in four typical bays of Shandong Province, China, and used scallop Chlamys farreri and clam Mactra veneriformis as sentinel species. The results revealed that dissolved PAHs tended to bioaccumulate in scallop C. farreri, and their ecological risk exhibited a significant correlation with the health risk of bioaccumulated PAHs and the bioeffect of screened biomarkers in scallop. Conversely, particulate PAHs demonstrated a higher bioaccumulation potential in the clam M. veneriformis, showing a stronger correlation between their ecological risk, health risk, and bioeffect in clams. This study provides the first elucidation of the connection between the ecological risk, health risk, and bioeffect of PAHs. Furthermore, based on the better correlation of health risk and bioeffect caused by PAHs with total PAHs in seawater, we propose that the clam M. veneriformis is a more suitable sentinel species for assessing environmental risk in typical bays of Shandong Province.

Integrated biomarker responses: a further improvement of IBR and IBRv2 indexes to preserve data variability in statistical analyses

In biomonitoring and laboratory studies, it is typical to measure a battery of molecular, biochemical, and cytogenetic biomarkers to evaluate the effects of xenobiotics in biota. However, summarizing the results of several biomarkers to inform laypersons and environmental agencies is still a challenge for researchers and environmental specialists. To address this issue, researchers have developed indexes such as the Integrated Biomarker Responses (IBR) and Integrated Biomarker Response version 2 (IBRv2) to summarize all biomarkers responses into a single value. Unfortunately, these indexes do not preserve the original biological variability, which hampers subsequent statistical analyses. In this study, we created new versions of IBR and IBRv2, which preserve individual data variability and can be used in typical statistical analyses. The new Integrated Biomarker Responses individual (IBRi), Integrated Biomarker Responses version 2 individual (IBRv2i) and Weighted Integrated Biomarker Responses version 2 individual (Weighted IBRv2i) indexes correlated with the original IBR and IBRv2 indexes and were able to detect differences among experimental groups in a simulated and case studies. Using the IBRi, IBRv2i, or Weighted IBRv2i indexes is advantageous because they maintain the data variability of the experimental groups and can be analyzed using hypothesis testing statistics like any other parameter. Additionally, this approach can help translate technical scientific terminology into a more accessible language suitable for environmental governmental agencies and decision-makers.

Chemodynamics of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons and Their Alkylated and Nitrated Derivatives in the Yellow Sea and East China Sea

The occurrence of continuously released polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marginal seas is regulated by hydrological and biogeochemical processes; however, scarce knowledge is about their derivatives in marine environments. In this study, the dissolved and particulate PAHs and their alkylated/nitrated derivatives (A-PAHs/N-PAHs) in surface seawater of the southwestern Yellow Sea (YS) and northwestern East China Sea (ECS) during September 2022 were comprehensively discussed. Results confirm higher levels of Σ26PAHs (9.3-70 ng/L) and Σ43A-PAHs (13-76 ng/L) than Σ20N-PAHs (0.80-6.6 ng/L). The spatial heterogeneity of contaminants was regulated by substantial riverine runoff and ocean currents. Lagrangian Coherent Structure analysis further revealed the existence of a transport barrier at the shelf break of the southwestern YS where contaminants hardly crossed and tended to accumulate. The relationship between dissolved compounds and chlorophyll a indicated both biodegradation and the biological pump contributed to the depletion of PAHs and A-PAHs from surface seawater while the biological pump was the major driver for N-PAHs, despite their complicated water-particle partition behavior due to variations in physicochemical properties in the presence of nitro groups. Source identification demonstrated that pyrogenic and petrogenic sources dominated the YS and ECS, respectively, while photochemical transformations appeared more active in the YS.

Active and passive biomonitoring of trace elements, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls in small Mediterranean harbours

Pollution particularly affects coastal ecosystems due to their proximity to anthropic sources. Among those environments, harbours are subjected to marine traffic but also to accidental and chronic pollution. These areas are thus exposed to complex mixtures of contaminants such as trace elements and organic contaminants which can impact marine species, habitats, and ecosystem services. The monitoring of these compounds is thus a crucial issue for assessment of environmental health. In this context, the aim of the present work was to evaluate the chemical contamination of harbours in Corsica (NW Mediterranean) by measuring the bioaccumulation of trace elements, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and polychlorinated biphenyls in mussels, limpets, and sea cucumbers. The human health risks associated with seafood consumption were also assessed. Results reveal a relatively low contamination in the Corsican harbours studied compared to larger Mediterranean ports and suggest that the potential health risk for consumers eating seafood is low.

Spatial distribution of benthic toxicity and sediment-bound metals and arsenic in Guangzhou urban waterways: Influence of land use

The effects of land use on pollutant loads in sediments have been well documented; however, its influence on spatial variations in sediment toxicity remains largely unknown. In the present study, the toxicological effects of 17 sediments collected from Guangzhou waterways were evaluated using two benthic invertebrates (Chironomus dilutus and Hyalella azteca), along with quantification of heavy metals and arsenic in the sediments. The impacts of land-use configuration on sediment toxicity and occurrence of heavy metals and arsenic were analyzed. The sediments presented moderate lethality (<40 %) in the two test species and significantly altered their enzymatic activity, including the activities of oxidative stress biomarkers and acetylcholine esterase. Metals (Ag, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, and Zn) and arsenic were detected in all the sediments, with total concentrations ranging from 238 to 1019 mg/kg of dry weight. Both the toxicity and chemical results displayed spatially dependent patterns but were related to different land use types. Toxicity was most influenced by agricultural and aquacultural activities, while metal and arsenic pollution was most influenced by urban land areas. The present findings are expected to provide essential knowledge for developing strategies that reduce the chemical pollution and ecotoxicological risk in sediments.

Beach showers as sources of contamination for sunscreen pollution in marine protected areas and areas of intensive beach tourism in Hawaii, USA

In 2019, sands in nearby runoff streams from public beach showers were sampled on three islands in the State of Hawaii and tested for over 18 different petrochemical UV filters. Beach sands that are directly in the plume discharge of beach showers on three of the islands of Hawaii (Maui, Oahu, Hawai'i) were found to be contaminated with a wide array of petrochemical-based UV-filters that are found in sunscreens. Sands from beach showers across all three islands had a mean concentration of 5619 ng/g of oxybenzone with the highest concentration of 34,518 ng/g of oxybenzone at a beach shower in the Waikiki area of Honolulu. Octocrylene was detected at a majority of the beach shower locations, with a mean concentration of 296.3 ng/g across 13 sampling sites with the highest concentration of 1075 ng/g at the beach shower in Waikiki. Avobenzone, octinoxate, 4-methylbenzylidene camphor and benzophenone-2 were detected, as well as breakdown products of oxybenzone, including benzophenone-1, 2,2'-dihydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone, and 4-hydroxybenzophenone. Dioxybenzone (DHMB) presented the highest concentration in water (75.4 ng/mL), whereas octocrylene was detected in all water samples. Some of these same target analytes were detected in water samples on coral reefs that are adjacent to the beach showers. Risk assessments for both sand and water samples at a majority of the sampling sites had a Risk Quotient > 1, indicating that these chemicals could pose a serious threat to beach zones and coral reef habitats. There are almost a dozen mitigation options that could be employed to quickly reduce contaminant loads associated with discharges from these beach showers, like those currently being employed (post-study sampling and analysis) in the State of Hawaii, including banning the use of sunscreens using petrochemical-based UV filters or educating tourists before they arrive on the beach.

Receptor model-oriented sources and risks evaluation of metals in sediments of an industrial affected riverine system in Bangladesh

Toxic metals in river sediments may represent significant ecological concerns, although there has been limited research on the source-oriented ecological hazards of metals in sediments. Surface sediments from an industrial affected Rupsa River were utilized in this study to conduct a complete investigation of toxic metals with source-specific ecological risk assessment. The findings indicated that the average concentration of Ni, Cr, Cd, Zn, As, Cu, Mn and Pb were 50.60 ± 10.97, 53.41 ± 7.76, 3.25 ± 1.73, 147.76 ± 36.78, 6.41 ± 1.85, 59.78 ± 17.77, 832.43 ± 71.56 and 25.64 ± 7.98 mg/kg, respectively and Cd, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn concentration were higher than average shale value. Based on sediment quality guidelines, the mean effective range median (ERM) quotient (1.29) and Mean probable effect level (PEL) quotient (2.18) showed medium-high contamination in sediment. Ecological indexes like toxic risk index (20.73), Nemerow integrated risk index (427.59) and potential ecological risk index (610.66) posed very high sediment pollution. The absolute principle component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model indicated that Zn (64.21%), Cd (51.58%), Cu (67.32%) and Ni (58.49%) in APCS-MLR model whereas Zn (49.5%), Cd (52.7%), Cu (57.4%) and Ni (44.6%) in PMF model were derived from traffic emission, agricultural activities, industrial source and mixed sources. PMF model-based Nemerow integrated risk index (NIRI) reported that industrial emission posed considerable and high risks for 87.27% and 12.72% of sediment samples. This work will provide a model-based guidelines for identifying and assessing metal sources which would be suitable for mitigating future pollution hazards in Riverine sediments in Bangladesh.

Assessment of organic contamination along the coast of Laizhou Bay, China: chemical analysis and integrated biomarker responses in the clam Ruditapes philippinarum

An investigative biomonitoring study was conducted along the coastal area of Laizhou Bay (China) to evaluate the impact of organic pollution on the clam Ruditapes philippinarum using bioaccumulation and multi-biomarker measurements. In addition, the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) and nonylphenol (NP) content in surface sediment at the study sites were also analyzed. Concentrations of PCBs, TPHs and NP in the sediments of the study area were 1.90 ± 0.10 μg kg-1, 39.55 ± 2.42 mg kg-1, 9.23 ± 0.41 μg kg-1 dry weight, respectively, while the organic contaminants in the soft tissues of R. philippinarum were 14.81 ± 0.96 μg kg-1 for PCBs, 165.87 ± 5.03 mg kg-1 for TPHs and 86.16 ± 5.29 μg kg-1 for NP. Linear regression analysis on the levels of organic pollutants accumulated in R. philippinarum and in sediments showed no significant correlation. Multi-biomarkers including superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, total glutathione and lipid peroxidation were assayed in gills and digestive glands of R. philippinarum. Finally, the biomarkers in gills were selected to calculate the Integrated Biomarker Response (IBR) index and to evaluate the impact of the three organic contaminants on R. philippinarum collected from different sites. According to IBR results, the western coast and eastern coast exhibited higher environmental stress than the sampling sites along the southern coast of Laizhou Bay. Significant correlation was found between the level of organic contaminants in the sediments and IBR whereas no dependence was found between pollutants' concentrations in sediments and separate biomarker responses. The results showed that PCBs and NP were the main organic pollutants among the three studied which have caused pollution pressure on R. philippinarum in Laizhou Bay coastal area.
