Biodegradation of environmental pollutants using catalase-based biocatalytic systems

Carbon based nanocomposites, surface functionalization as a promising material for VOCs (volatile organic compounds) treatment

Urban residential and industrial growth development affects sustainable and healthful indoor environments. Environmental issues are a global problem. The deterioration of indoor air quality has prompted the creation of several air cleansing techniques. This review explains how carbon-based materials have influenced the development of air purification systems using photocatalysis. These carbon-based materials offer unique properties and advantages in VOC removal processes. Biochar, produced from biomass pyrolysis, provides an environmentally sustainable solution with its porous structure and carbon-rich composition. Carbon quantum dots, with their quantum confinement effects and tunable surface properties, show promise in VOC sensing and removal applications. Polymers incorporating reduced graphene oxide demonstrate enhanced adsorption capabilities owing to the synergistic effects of graphene and polymer matrices. Activated carbon fibers, characterized by their high aspect ratio and interconnected porosity, provide efficient VOC removal with rapid kinetics. With their unique electronic and structural properties, graphitic carbon nitrides offer opportunities for photocatalytic degradation of VOCs under visible light. Catalysts integrated with MXene, a two-dimensional nanomaterial, exhibit enhanced catalytic activity for VOC oxidation reactions. Using various carbon-based materials in VOC removal showcases the versatility and effectiveness of carbon-based approaches in addressing environmental challenges associated with indoor air pollution. Metal-organic-framework materials are carbon-based compounds. It examines the correlation between VOC mineralization and specific characteristics of carbon materials, including surface area, adsorption capability, surface functional groups, and optoelectronic properties. Discussions include the basics of PCO, variables influencing how well catalysts degrade, and degradation mechanisms. It explores how technology will improve in the future to advance studies on healthy and sustainable indoor air quality.

Enzyme-Immobilized Porous Crystals for Environmental Applications

Developing efficient technologies to eliminate or degrade contaminants is paramount for environmental protection. Biocatalytic decontamination offers distinct advantages in terms of selectivity and efficiency; however, it still remains challenging when applied in complex environmental matrices. The main challenge originates from the instability and difficult-to-separate attributes of fragile enzymes, which also results in issues of compromised activity, poor reusability, low cost-effectiveness, etc. One viable solution to harness biocatalysis in complex environments is known as enzyme immobilization, where a flexible enzyme is tightly fixed in a solid carrier. In the case where a reticular crystal is utilized as the support, it is feasible to engineer next-generation biohybrid catalysts functional in complicated environmental media. This can be interpreted by three aspects: (1) the highly crystalline skeleton can shield the immobilized enzyme against external stressors. (2) The porous network ensures the high accessibility of the interior enzyme for catalytic decontamination. And (3) the adjustable and unambiguous structure of the reticular framework favors in-depth understanding of the interfacial interaction between the framework and enzyme, which can in turn guide us in designing highly active biocomposites. This Review aims to introduce this emerging biocatalysis technology for environmental decontamination involving pollutant degradation and greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide) conversion, with emphasis on the enzyme immobilization protocols and diverse catalysis principles including single enzyme catalysis, catalysis involving enzyme cascades, and photoenzyme-coupled catalysis. Additionally, the remaining challenges and forward-looking directions in this field are discussed. We believe that this Review may offer a useful biocatalytic technology to contribute to environmental decontamination in a green and sustainable manner and will inspire more researchers at the intersection of the environment science, biochemistry, and materials science communities to co-solve environmental problems.

Urea addition as an enhanced strategy for degradation of petroleum contaminants during co-composting of straw and pig manure: Evidences from microbial community and enzyme activity evaluation

Alterations in microbial community succession patterns and enzyme activities by petroleum pollutants during co-composting of straw and swine manure with the supplementary nitrogen source are unclear. In this study, urea was added into co-composting systems, and the removal performance of petroleum, microbial enzyme activity and community changes were investigated. Results showed that the polyphenol oxidase and catalase activities which were both related to the degradation of petroleum contaminants were accordingly increased from 20.65 to 30.31 U/g and from 171.87 to 231.86 U/g due to urea addition. The removal efficiency of petroleum contaminants in composting with urea increased from 45.06% to 82.29%. The addition of urea increased the diversity and abundance of petroleum-degrading microorganisms, and enhanced microbial linkages. This study provides a novel strategy for the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbon as well as a new insight into the effect of urea on both microbial processes and composting phases.

Prediction and validation of enzymatic degradation of aflatoxin M1: Genomics and proteomics analysis of Bacillus pumilus E-1-1-1 enzymes

Aflatoxins are a class of highly toxic mycotoxins. Aflatoxin M1 (AFM1) is hydroxylated metabolite of aflatoxin B1, having comparable toxicity, which is more commonly found in milk. In this study, the whole genome sequencing of Bacillus pumilus E-1-1-1 isolated from feces of 38 kinds of animals, having aflatoxin M1 degradation ability was conducted. Bacterial genome sequencing indicated that a total of 3445 sequences were finally annotated on 23 different cluster of orthologous groups (COG) categories. Then, the potential AFM1 degradation proteins were verified by proteomics; the properties of these proteins were further explored, including protein molecular weight, hydrophobicity, secondary structure prediction, and three-dimensional structures. Bacterial genome sequencing combined with proteomics showed that eight genes were the most capable of degrading AFM1 including three catalases, one superoxide dismutase, and four peroxidases to clone. These eight genes with AFM1 degrading capacity were successfully expressed. These results indicated that AFM1 can be degraded by Bacillus pumilus E-1-1-1 protein and the most degrading proteins were oxidoreductases.

Recent advances in carbon-based nanomaterials for the treatment of toxic inorganic pollutants in wastewater

Wastewater contains inorganic pollutants, generated by industrial and domestic sources, such as heavy metals, antibiotics, and chemical pesticides, and these pollutants cause many environmental problems.
