Abstract
Healing and treatment of chronic wounds are often complicated due to biofilm formation by pathogens. Here, the efficacy of plasma activated water (PAW) as a pre-treatment strategy has been investigated prior to the application of topical antiseptics polyhexamethylene biguanide, povidone iodine, and MediHoney, which are routinely used to treat chronic wounds. The efficacy of this treatment strategy was determined against biofilms of Escherichia coli formed on a plastic substratum and on a human keratinocyte monolayer substratum used as an in vitro biofilm-skin epithelial cell model. PAW pre-treatment greatly increased the killing efficacy of all the three antiseptics to eradicate the E. coli biofilms formed on the plastic and keratinocyte substrates. However, the efficacy of the combined PAW-antiseptic treatment and single treatments using PAW or antiseptic alone was lower for biofilms formed in the in vitro biofilm-skin epithelial cell model compared to the plastic substratum. Scavenging assays demonstrated that reactive species present within the PAW were largely responsible for its anti-biofilm activity. PAW treatment resulted in significant intracellular reactive oxygen and nitrogen species accumulation within the E. coli biofilms, while also rapidly acting on the microbial membrane leading to outer membrane permeabilisation and depolarisation. Together, these factors contribute to significant cell death, potentiating the antibacterial effect of the assessed antiseptics.

Abstract
Noroviruses (NoVs) are major foodborne pathogens that cause acute gastroenteritis. Oysters are significant carriers of this pathogen, and disease transmission from the consumption of NoVs-infected oysters occurs worldwide. The review discusses the mechanism of NoVs bioaccumulation in oysters, particularly the binding of histo-blood group antigen-like (HBGA-like) molecules to NoVs in oysters. The review explores the factors that influence NoVs bioaccumulation in oysters, including temperature, precipitation and water contamination. The review also discusses the detection methods of NoVs in live oysters and analyzes the inactivation effects of high hydrostatic pressure, irradiation treatment and plasma treatment on NoVs. These non-thermal processing treatments can remove NoVs efficiently while retaining the original flavor of oysters. However, further research is needed to reduce the cost of these technologies to achieve large-scale commercial applications. The review aims to provide novel insights to reduce the bioaccumulation of NoVs in oysters and serve as a reference for the development of new, rapid and effective methods for detecting and inactivating NoVs in live oysters.

Abstract
Various foodborne viruses have been associated with human health during the last decade, causing gastroenteritis and a huge economic burden worldwide. Furthermore, the emergence of new variants of infectious viruses is growing continuously. Inactivation of foodborne viruses in the food industry is a formidable task because although viruses cannot grow in foods, they can survive in the food matrix during food processing and storage environments. Conventional inactivation methods pose various drawbacks, necessitating more effective and environmentally friendly techniques for controlling foodborne viruses during food production and processing. Various inactivation approaches for controlling foodborne viruses have been attempted in the food industry. However, some traditionally used techniques, such as disinfectant-based or heat treatment, are not always efficient. Nonthermal techniques are considered a new platform for effective and safe treatment to inactivate foodborne viruses. This review focuses on foodborne viruses commonly associated with human gastroenteritis, including newly emerged viruses, such as sapovirus and Aichi virus. It also investigates the use of chemical and nonthermal physical treatments as effective technologies to inactivate foodborne viruses.

Abstract
As recently highlighted by the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, viruses have become an increasing burden for health, global economy, and environment. The control of transmission by contact with contaminated materials represents a major challenge, particularly in hospital environments. However, the current disinfection methods in hospital settings suffer from numerous drawbacks. As a result, several medical supplies that cannot be properly disinfected are not reused, leading to severe shortages and increasing amounts of waste, thus prompting the search for alternative solutions. In this work, we report that non-thermal plasma (NTP) can effectively inactivate SARS-CoV-2 from non-porous and porous materials commonly found in healthcare facilities. We demonstrated that 5 min treatment with a dielectric barrier discharge NTP can inactivate 100% of SARS-CoV-2 (Wuhan and Omicron strains) from plastic material. Using porcine respiratory coronavirus (surrogate for SARS-CoV-2) and coxsackievirus B3 (highly resistant non-enveloped virus), we tested the NTP virucidal activity on hospital materials and obtained complete inactivation after 5 and 10 min, respectively. We hypothesize that the produced reactive species and local acidification contribute to the overall virucidal effect of NTP. Our results demonstrate the potential of dielectric barrier discharge NTPs for the rapid, efficient, and low-cost disinfection of healthcare materials.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has placed a massive impact on global civilization. Finding effective treatments and drugs for these viral diseases was crucial. This paper outlined and highlighted key elements of recent advances in nonthermal biocompatible plasma (NBP) technology for antiviral applications. We searched for papers on NBP virus inactivation in PubMed ePubs, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. The data and relevant information were gathered in order to establish a mechanism for NBP-based viral inactivation. NBP has been developed as a new, effective, and safe strategy for viral inactivation. NBP may be used to inactivate viruses in an ecologically friendly way as well as activate animal and plant viruses in a number of matrices. The reactive species have been shown to be the cause of viral inactivation. NBP-based disinfection techniques provide an interesting solution to many of the problems since they are simply deployable and do not require the resource-constrained consumables and reagents required for traditional decontamination treatments. Scientists are developing NBP technology solutions to assist the medical community in dealing with the present COVID-19 outbreak. NBP is predicted to be the most promising strategy for battling COVID-19 and other viruses in the future.

Abstract
The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has greatly stressed the global community, exposing vulnerabilities in the supply chains for disinfection materials, personal protective equipment, and medical resources worldwide. Disinfection methods based on cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) technologies offer an intriguing solution to many of these challenges because they are easily deployable and do not require resource-constrained consumables or reagents needed for conventional decontamination practices. CAP technologies have shown great promise for a wide range of medical applications from wound healing and cancer treatment to sterilization methods to mitigate airborne and fomite transfer of viruses. This review engages the broader community of scientists and engineers that wish to help the medical community with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic by establishing methods to utilize broadly applicable CAP technologies.

Abstract
The presence of viruses in water is a major risk for human and animal health due to their high resistance to disinfection. Pulsed corona discharge plasma (PCDP) efficiently inactivates bacteria by causing damage to biological macromolecules, but its effect on waterborne virus has not been reported. This study evaluated the inactivation efficacy of PCDP to viruses using spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) as a model. The results showed that 4-log10 reduction of SVCV infectivity in cells was reached after 120 s treatment, and there was no significant difference in survival of fish infected with SVCV inactivated by PCDP for 240 s or more longer compared to the control fish without virus challenge, thus confirming the feasibility of PCDP to waterborne virus inactivation. Moreover, the high input energy density caused by voltage significantly improved the inactivation efficiency. The further research indicated that reactive species (RS) generated by pulsed corona discharge firstly reacted with phosphoprotein (P) and polymerase complex proteins (L) through penetration into the SVCV virions, and then caused the loss of viral infectivity by damage to genome and other structural proteins. This study has significant implications for waterborne virus removal and development of novel disinfection technologies.

Abstract
A variety of pathogens can cause people to suffer from serious diseases, and the transmission of COVID-19 through the cold chain has once again attracted people's attention to cold chain disinfection. Unfortunately, there is no mature cold chain disinfection technique yet. In this study, a low-temperature plasma disinfection technique for a cold chain is proposed. The disinfection effect of plasma generated by surface dielectric barrier discharge on Escherichia coli in ice at cryogenic temperature is studied, and the possible disinfection mechanism is discussed. It is found that the O3 mode and the NOx mode also exist in the surface dielectric barrier discharge at cryogenic temperature, just as at room temperature. The disinfection effect of both modes is weak in 5 min plasma treatment, but in 60 min post-treatment, the NOx mode shows a stronger disinfection effect, with 4.45 log reduction. It is speculated that gaseous H2O2 and NOx can be adsorbed on the ice surface in the NOx mode and then converted into peroxynitrite, which is a powerful bactericidal species. In conclusion, a low-temperature plasma is a promising technique for cold chain disinfection, which is of great significance for ensuring people's health.

Abstract
This study investigated the antiviral effects of floating electrode-dielectric barrier discharge (FE-DBD) plasma treatment (1.1 kV, 43 kHz, N2 1.5 m/s, 5-30 min) against human norovirus (HuNoV) GII.4 in Jogaejeotgal Infectivity was assessed using real-time quantitative-PCR (RT-qPCR) following treatment of samples with propidium monoazide (PMA) and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate (Sarkosyl). This study also investigated the effects of FE-DBD plasma treatment on Jogaejeotgal quality (assessed using pH value and Hunter colors). Following inoculation, the average titers of HuNoV GII.4 in Jogaejeotgal significantly (P < 0.05) decreased with increases in the FE-DBD plasma treatment time in both the non-PMA-treated and PMA + Sarkosyl-treated samples; in the non-PMA and PMA + Sarkosyl treated Jogaejeotgal, HuNoV GII.4 titers (log10 copy number/µL) were to: 3.16 and 2.95 (5 min), 2.90 and 2.48 (10 min), 2.82 and 2.40 (15 min), 2.58 and 2.26 (20 min), 2.48 and 2.06 (25 min), and 2.23 and 1.91 (30 min), respectively. The average titers of HuNoV demonstrated significant (P < 0.05) reductions of 0.35 log10 (55.3%) in PMA + Sarkosyl-treated samples compared with the non-PMA treated samples following exposure to 5-30 min of FE-DBD plasma. Reductions of >1-log for HuNoV in PMA + Sarkosyl- treated Jogaejeotgal required treatments of FE-DBD of 5-30 min. Using the first order kinetic model (R2 = 0.95), GII.4 decimal reduction time (D-value) resulting from FE-DBD plasma was 23.75 min. The pH and Hunter colors ("L", "a", and "b") were not significantly different (P > 0.05) between the untreated and FE-DBD plasma-treated Jogaejeotgal. Based on these results, the PMA + Sarkosyl/RT-qPCR method could be assessing HuNoV viability following 5-30 min treatment of FE-DBD plasma. Furthermore, may be an optimal treatment for Jogaejeotgal without altering the food quality (color and pH).

Abstract
Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) is a contagious disease caused by a novel corona virus (SARS-CoV-2). No medical intervention has yet succeeded, though vaccine success is expected soon. However, it may take months or years to reach the vaccine to the whole population of the world. Therefore, the technological preparedness is worth to discuss for the smooth running of food processing activities. We have explained the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the food supply chain (FSC) and then discussed the technological interventions to overcome these impacts. The novel and smart technologies during food processing to minimize human-to-human and human-to-food contact were compiled. The potential virus-decontamination technologies were also discussed. Finally, we concluded that these technologies would make food processing activities smarter, which would ultimately help to run the FSC smoothly during COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
Water scarcity is one of the greatest threats for human survival and quality of life, and this is increasingly contributing to the risk of human, animal and plant infections due to waterborne viruses. Viruses are transmitted through polluted water, where they can survive and cause infections even at low concentrations. Plant viruses from the genus Tobamovirus are highly mechanically transmissible, and cause considerable damage to important crops, such as tomato. The release of infective tobamoviruses into environmental waters has been reported, with the consequent risk for arid regions, where these waters are used for irrigation. Virus inactivation in water is thus very important and cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) is emerging in this field as an efficient, safe, and sustainable alternative to classic waterborne virus inactivation methods. In the present study we evaluated CAP-mediated inactivation of pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) in water samples. PMMoV is a very resilient water-transmissible tobamovirus that can survive transit through the human digestive tract. The efficiency of PMMoV inactivation was characterized for infectivity and virion integrity, and at the genome level, using test plant infectivity assays, transmission electron microscopy, and molecular methods, respectively. Additionally, the safety of CAP treatment was determined by testing the cytotoxic and genotoxic properties of CAP-treated water on the HepG2 cell line. 5-min treatment with CAP was sufficient to inactivate PMMoV without introducing any cytotoxic or genotoxic effects in the in-vitro cell model system. These data on inactivation of such stable waterborne virus, PMMoV, will encourage further examination of CAP as an alternative for treatment of potable and irrigation waters, and even for other water sources, with emphasis on inactivation of various viruses including enteric viruses.

Abstract
The atmospheric-pressure non-thermal dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma has recently emerged as an efficient decontamination method for the food safety enhancement. Thus the objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a simple DBD plasma treatment, with a relatively low-frequency power supply operating at 60 Hz, for microbial inactivation. A parametric study of operating conditions for bacterial inactivation was conducted using nutrient agar inoculated with Escherichia coli (2.28--6.28 log CFU/ml). The microbial log reduction was enhanced with increasing input power (30, 50, 70 W) and plasma exposure time (0, 1, 3, 5, 7 min). The inactivation effect was increased by decreasing inter-electrode gap (2, 1.5, 1 cm) and by reducing the initial microorganism concentration. Accordingly, a DBD plasma treatment at 50 W for 10 min could lead to complete killing of E. coli and partial inactivation of Listeria innocua on cheese (mean log reduction: 4.75 ± 0.02 and 0.72 ± 0.01, respectively). The decontamination efficacy of DBD plasma was affected by the types of microorganisms. The changes in hardness and color of cheese were unnoticeable after 10 min treatment with a power of 50 W. Overall, the results suggested that the DBD plasma can be potentially exploited to improve the food safety.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Human noroviruses are enteric pathogens that cause a substantial proportion of acute gastroenteritis cases worldwide regardless of background variables such as age, ethnicity, and gender. Although person-to-person contact is the general route of transmission, foodborne infections are also common. Thorough cooking eliminates noroviruses, but several food products such as berries, leafy vegetables, and mollusks undergo only limited heat treatment, if any, before consumption. Novel applications of nonthermal processing technologies are currently being vigorously researched because they can be used to inactivate pathogens and extend product shelf life with limited effects on nutrient content and perceived quality. These technologies, adopted from several industrial fields, include some methods already approved for food processing that have been applied in the food industry for years. However, a majority of the research has been conducted with bacteria and simple matrixes or surfaces. This review focuses on elimination of norovirus in food matrixes by use of nonthermal technologies in four categories: high hydrostatic pressure, light, irradiation, and cold atmospheric plasma. We discuss the properties of noroviruses, principles and inactivation mechanisms of select technologies, and main findings of relevant studies. We also provide an overview of the current status of the research and propose future directions for related work. HIGHLIGHTS

Abstract
This study investigates the effects of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment (1.1 kV, 43 kHz, N2 1.5 L/min, 10~60 min) on human norovirus (HuNoV) GII.4 infectivity in fresh oysters. HuNoV viability in oysters was assessed by using propidium monoazide (PMA) as a nucleic acid intercalating dye before performing a real-time reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Additionally, the impact of the DBD plasma treatment on pH and Hunter colors was assessed. When DBD plasma was treated for 60 min, the HuNoV genomic titer reduction without PMA pretreatment was negligible (<1 log copy number/µL), whereas when PMA treatment was used, HuNoV titer was reduced to >1 log copy number/µL in just 30 min. D1 and D2-value of HuNoV infectivity were calculated as 36.5 and 73.0 min of the DBD plasma treatment, respectively, using the first-order kinetics model (R2 = 0.98). The pH and Hunter colors were not significantly different (p > 0.05) between the untreated and DBD-plasma-treated oysters. The results suggest that PMA/RT-qPCR could help distinguish HuNoV infectivity without negatively affecting oyster quality following >30 min treatment with DBD plasma. Moreover, the inactivation kinetics of nonthermal DBD plasma against HuNoV in fresh oysters might provide basic information for oyster processing and distribution.

Abstract
Atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) inactivation of Lentilactobacillus hilgardii was investigated. Bacteria were exposed to ACP dielectric barrier discharge with helium and oxygen as working gases for 5, 10, and 15 min. The innovative approach in our work for evaluation of bacterial survival was the use in addition to the classical plate culture method also flow cytometry which allowed the cells to be sorted and revealed different physiological states after the plasma treatment. Results showed total inhibition of bacterial growth after 10-min of ACP exposure. However, the analysis of flow cytometry demonstrated the presence of 14.4% of active cells 77.5% of cells in the mid-active state and 8.1% of dead cells after 10 min. In addition, some of the cells in the mid-active state showed the ability to grow again on culture medium, thus confirming the hypothesis of induction of VBNC state in L .hilgardii cells by cold plasma. In turn, atomic force microscopy (AFM) which was used to study morphological changes in L. hilgardii after plasma treatment at particular physiological states (active, mid-active, dead), showed that the surface roughness of the mid-active cell (2.70 ± 0.75 nm) was similar to that of the control sample (2.04 ± 0.55 nm). The lack of considerable changes on the cell surface additionally explains the effective cell resuscitation. To the best of our knowledge, AFM was used for the first time in this work to analyze cells which have been sorted into subpopulations after cold plasma treatment and this is the first work indicating the induction of VBNC state in L. hilgardii cells after exposure to cold plasma.

Abstract
In recent years, several foodborne viruses' outbreaks have been recorded worldwide. Μost of the foodborne viruses have a low infection dose, are stable and can persist and survive in foods for a long time without loss of infectivity. The most important foodborne viruses are: human norovirus (HuNoV), human rotavirus (HRV), hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis E virus (HEV), human astrovirus (HAstV), Aichi virus (AiV), sapovirus (SaV), human adenovirus (HAdV) and enterovirus (EV). In recent years, innovative non-thermal food-processing technologies including high-pressure processing (HPP), cold plasma (CP), ultraviolet light (UV), irradiation and pulsed electric field (PEF) for improving the quality and safety of foods, including foods of animal origin, have been under research. This review presents the recent data on foodborne viruses and reviews the innovative non-thermal technologies for the control of the foodborne viruses in foods.

Abstract
Vaccination has been one of the most effective health intervention mechanisms to reduce morbidity and mortality associated with infectious diseases. Vaccines stimulate the body's protective immune responses through controlled exposure to modified versions of pathogens that establish immunological memory. However, only a few diseases have effective vaccines. The biological effects of nonthermal plasma on cells suggest that plasma could play an important role in improving efficacy of existing vaccines and overcoming some of the limitations and challenges with current vaccination strategies. This review summarizes the opportunities for nonthermal plasma for immunization and therapeutic purposes.

Abstract
Sterilization methods for individuals and facilities are extremely important to enable human beings to continue the basic tasks of life and to enable safe and continuous interaction of citizens in society when outbreaks of viral pandemics such as the coronavirus. Sterilization methods, their availability in gatherings, and the efficiency of their work are among the important means to contain the spread of viruses and epidemics and enable societies to practice their activities almost naturally. Despite the effective solutions given by traditional methods of surface disinfection, modern nanotechnology has proven to be an emergent innovation to protect against viruses. On this note, recent scientific breakthroughs have highlighted the ability of nanospray technology to attach to air atoms in terms of size and time-period of existence as a sterilizer for renewed air in large areas for human gatherings. Despite the ability of this method to control the outbreak of infections, the mutation of bactericidal mechanisms presents a great issue for scientists. In recent years, science has explored a more performant approach and techniques based on a surface-resistance concept. The most emergent is the self-defensive antimicrobial known as the self-disinfection surface. It consists of the creation of a bacteria cell wall to resist the adhesion of bacteria or to kill bacteria by chemical or physical changes. Besides, plasma-mediated virus inactivation was shown as a clean, effective, and human healthy solution for surface disinfection. The purpose of this article is to deepen the discussion on the threat of traditional methods of surface disinfection and to assess the state of the art and potential solutions using emergent nanotechnology.

Abstract
The COVID-19 crisis profoundly disguised the vulnerability of human societies and healthcare systems in the situation of a pandemic. In many instances, it became evident that the quick and safe reduction of viral load and spread is the foremost principle in the successful management of such a pandemic. However, it became also clear that many of the established routines in healthcare are not always sufficient to cope with the increased demand for decontamination procedures of items, healthcare products, and even infected tissues. For the last 25 years, the use of gas plasma technology has sparked a tremendous amount of literature on its decontaminating properties, especially for heat-labile targets, such as polymers and tissues, where chemical decontamination often is not appropriate. However, while the majority of earlier work focused on bacteria, only relatively few reports are available on the inactivation of viruses. We here aim to provide a perspective for the general audience of the chances and opportunities of gas plasma technology for supporting healthcare during viral pandemics such as the COVID-19 crisis. This includes possible real-world plasma applications, appropriate laboratory viral test systems, and critical points on the technical and safety requirements of gas plasmas for virus inactivation.

Abstract
Viruses can infect all cell-based organisms, from bacteria to humans, animals, and plants. They are responsible for numerous cases of hospitalization, many deaths, and widespread crop destruction, all of which result in an enormous medical, economical, and biological burden. Each of the currently used decontamination methods has important drawbacks. Cold plasma (CP) has entered this field as a novel, efficient, and clean solution for virus inactivation. We present recent developments in this promising field of CP-mediated virus inactivation, and describe the applications and mechanisms of the inactivation. This is particularly relevant because viral pandemics, such as COVID-19, highlight the need for alternative virus inactivation methods to replace, complement, or upgrade existing procedures. Pathogenic viruses are becoming an increasing burden for health, agriculture, and the global economy. Classic disinfection methods have several drawbacks, and innovative solutions for virus inactivation are urgently needed. CP can be used as an environmentally friendly tool for virus inactivation. It can inactivate different human, animal, and plant viruses in various matrices. When using CP for virus inactivation it is important to set the correct parameters and to choose treatment durations that allow particles to interact with the contaminated material. Reactive oxygen and/or nitrogen species have been shown to be responsible for virus inactivation through effects on capsid proteins and/or nucleic acids. The development of more accurate methods will provide information on which plasma particles are crucial in each experiment, and how exactly they affect viruses.

Abstract
As the leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide, human noroviruses (HuNoVs) have caused around 685 million cases of infection and nearly $60 billion in losses every year. Despite their highly contagious nature, an effective vaccine for HuNoVs has yet to become commercially available. Therefore, rapid detection and subtyping of noroviruses is crucial for preventing viral spread. Over the past half century, there has been monumental progress in the development of techniques for the detection and analysis of noroviruses. However, currently no rapid, portable assays are available to detect and subtype infectious HuNoVs. The purpose of this review is to survey and present different analytical techniques for the detection and characterization of noroviruses.

Abstract
We studied the efficacy of cold atmospheric-pressure plasma (CAP), generated by a two-dimensional array of integrated, coaxial, microhollow, dielectric barrier discharge plasma, against Salmonella enterica serovar Heidelberg (SH) on stainless steel, romaine lettuce, and chicken breast. Exposure of SH to CAP on a dry stainless steel surface had low bactericidal efficacy; only 2.5 log10 colony-forming units (CFUs) were inactivated after 10 min of exposure. On the other hand, the presence of moisture led to decontamination of ∼6.5 log10 CFUs after only 3 min. Although complete decontamination was not achieved on lettuce and chicken breast samples after 10 min of exposure, SH counts were reduced by ∼4.5 and 3.7 log10 CFUs, respectively. A partial suppression of bactericidal effects was observed on steel surfaces when it was coated with bovine serum albumin before spiking with bacteria and exposure to plasma, indicating that the proteinaceous nature of chicken meat may be partially responsible for lower efficacy of CAP on chicken muscles. The initial bacterial load was also found to affect the anti-SH efficacy; at high (∼6.5 log CFUs) and low (∼3.5 CFUs) initial counts, the time required for complete decontamination on stainless steel and lettuce decreased from 3 to 0.5 min and >10 to 1 min, respectively. However, the analysis of inactivation kinetics showed that effects of initial loads of contamination on the rate of bacterial inactivation were not statistically significant. This is consistent with other findings for conditions where both bacterial loads were under the multilayering threshold that might have affected the rate of killing.
