Abstract
Background Pectins are a class of acidic polysaccharides with complex structures. Different pectin molecules are composed of different domains, which have an important impact on their biological activity. Objective This study aimed to determine the structural features and the antioxidant activities of the pectic polysaccharides isolated from Veronica peregrina L. Methods The polysaccharide was isolated from Veronica peregrina L by water extraction and fractionated by ion exchange chromatography and gel permeation chromatography. The structure features of the pectic polysaccharides were determined by Fourier transforminfrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The antioxidant activities was evaluated by the DPPH, OH and ABTS radical scavenging ability. Results WVPP-A2b and WVPP-A3b, with molecular weights of 48.7 × 104 and 77.6 × 104 kDa, respectively, contained homogalacturonan (HG), rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I), and rhamnogalacturonan II (RG-II) domains with a mass ratio of 2.08:2.64:1.00 and 3.87:4.65:1:00, respectively. The RG-I domain contained an arabinogalactan II backbone and arabinans consisting of t-Araf, (1→5)-α-Araf, and (1→3,5)-α-Araf. WVPP-A3b also contained short chains consisting of the [t-Araf-(1→5)-α-Araf-(1→] structural unit. WVPP-A3b showed stronger ability to scavenge DPPH, hydroxyl, and ABTS radicals, which was potentially associated with its high content of galacturonic acid and presence of the HG domain. Conclusion The results provide information for enhancing knowledge of the structureactivity relationship of pectic polysaccharides from V. peregrina and their potential application in the healthcare food field.

Abstract
Sulfated polysaccharides are effective immunostimulating agents by activating several intracellular signaling pathways. A sulfated (1 → 3)/(1 → 4)-linked galactofucan TCP-3 with promising immunomodulatory effects was purified from a marine macroalga Turbinaria conoides. The immune-enhancing potential of TCP-3 (100-400 mg/kg BW) was evaluated on cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppressed animals by increasing bone marrow cellularity (10-13 cells/femur/mL x 106), α-esterase activity (1200-1700 number of positive cells/4000 BMC), interferon-γ (1.31-1.49 pg/mL), interleukin-2 (3.49-3.99 pg/mL) secretion, and WBC count (> 3000 cells/cu mm). The proliferation of lymphocytes for in vitro and in vivo conditions was enhanced by administering TCP-3 besides regulating the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6/1β/12, tumor necrosis factor-α, transforming growth factor-β), and an inducible isoform of nitric oxide synthase. A promising reduction of viral copy formation was observed by administering TCP-3 (< 2 × 107 number) on SARS CoV-2 (delta variant) induced Vero cells in comparison with the infected group (> 5 × 107 number).

Abstract
Macroalgae are a new food source in the Western world. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of harvest months and food processing on cultivated Saccharina latissima (S. latissima) from Quebec. Seaweeds were harvested in May and June 2019 and processed by blanching, steaming, and drying with a frozen control condition. The chemical (lipids, proteins, ash, carbohydrates, fibers) and mineral (I, K, Na, Ca, Mg, Fe) compositions, the potential bioactive compounds (alginates, fucoidans, laminarans, carotenoids, polyphenols) and in vitro antioxidant potential were investigated. The results showed that May specimens were significantly the richest in proteins, ash, I, Fe, and carotenoids, while June macroalgae contained more carbohydrates. The antioxidant potential of water-soluble extracts (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity [ORAC] analysis-625 µg/mL) showed the highest potential in June samples. Interactions between harvested months and processing were demonstrated. The drying process applied in May specimens appeared to preserve more S. latissima quality, whereas blanching and steaming resulted in a leaching of minerals. Losses of carotenoids and polyphenols were observed with heating treatments. Water-soluble extracts of dried May samples showed the highest antioxidant potential (ORAC analysis) compared to other methods. Thus, the drying process used to treat S. latissima harvested in May seems to be the best that should be selected.

Abstract
Inflammation is one of the most significant causes of several chronic diseases, which includes the expression of cytokines activating immune cells to up-regulate the inflammatory cascade. Polysaccharides from marine macroalgae are promising anti-inflammatory agents because of their potential to attenuate inflammatory cytokines. The triangular sea bell Turbinaria decurrens (Sargassaceae) among marine macroalgae is ubiquitous in oceanic waters, and a sulfated polygalactofucan SPTd-2 [→3-(α-L-fucp-(2-OSO3-)-(1 → 4)-α-L-fucp-(3-OAc)-(1 → 4)-β-D-galp-(1→] was purified from the species. The studied polygalactofucan SPTd-2 exhibited anti-inflammatory activities against cyclooxygenase-2 (IC50 10.56 μM) and 5-lipoxygenase (IC50 3.36 μM) with a greater selectivity index (2.35) than ibuprofen (0.44), besides attenuating pro-inflammatory cytokine production, including tumor necrosis factor-α, transforming growth factor-β, interleukin-2, 1β, and interferon-γ. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction displayed that SPTd-2 blocked the mRNA of interferon-γ and interleukin-2, in the human monocytic cell line THP-1. The results showed the potential of SPTd-2 to attenuate inflammation-associated disorders.

Abstract
Sulfated polysaccharides (SP) are widely used as industrial additives and pharmaceutical intermediates. As SP can only be extracted from sea algae, making them scarce raw materials. Recently, SP have been detected and extracted from the waste activated sludge of a saline secondary wastewater treatment plant, suggesting that there are alternative primary producers and synthesis pathways of the SP within the biological activated sludge. This study aimed to identify the primary SP producers, the SP biosynthesis pathways as well as the SP production rates in different types of activated sludges cultivated anoxically and/or anaerobically, with and without the presence of sufficient sulfate. The results showed that alternating anaerobic/anoxic conditions in sludge effectively produced the SP by the ordinary heterotrophic organisms (OHOs). The synthesis pathways for the three most common bioactive SP viz. fucoidan, carrageen, and heparin, were identified and elucidated at both the substrate and enzymatic levels. The Western Blot analyses revealed key enzymes for the SP synthesis (e.g., GDP-L-fucose-synthetase, GDP-fucose-pyrophosphorylase, β-1,4-galactosyltransferase), when sulfate was sufficient (>170 mg S/L) under an alternating anaerobic/anoxic conditions. In contrast, the absence of sulfate suppressed the SP production during the initial step of the SP generation. The synthesis of the SP in the sulfate-reducing (anaerobic) sludge was suppressed by the enzymatic inhibition, when sulfide exceeded 160 mg S/L, due to the competition for energy between the SP synthesis and sulfide detoxification. However, in the case of the sulfide-oxidizing sludge both the organic carbon and metabolism energy deficiencies inhibited the SP production. The findings of this study expand the understandings of the SP synthesis in the activated sludge under different operating conditions, including different sulfate levels.

Abstract
Dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 is a multifunctional ectoenzyme, which is implicated with hyperglycemic pathophysiology. Therefore, dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 inhibitors could be used as an attractive therapeutic strategy in blood-glucose homeostasis to attenuate the pathophysiologies of diabetes. A sulfated galactofucan characterized as [→1)-O-4-sulfonato-α-fucopyranosyl-(2→1)-O-2-sulfonato-α-fucopyranose-(3→] along with a branch of [→1)-6-O-methyl-β-galactopyranosyl-(4→] unit at the C-4 position of O-2-sulfonato-α-fucopyranose, isolated from the seaweed Padina tetrastromatica, exhibited prospective attenuation property against dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (IC50 0.25 mg mL-1). The studied sulfated galactofucan exhibited potential inhibitory properties against carbolytic enzymes α-amylase (IC50 0.98 mg mL-1) and α-glucosidase (IC50 0.87 mg mL-1) in comparison with the standard antidiabetic agent acarbose, along with radical scavenging activities. The seaweed-originated galactofucan could be developed as a promising natural therapeutic lead against hyperglycemic disorder.

Preparation and Antioxidant Activity In Vitro of Fermented Tremella fuciformis Extracellular Polysaccharides. FERMENTATION 2022. Abstract
This study was aimed at increasing the capacity of fermented Tremella fuciformis extracellular polysaccharides (TEPS) for possible functional food applications. Thus, strain varieties, fermentation parameters and purification conditions, and the in vitro antioxidant activities of purified EPS fractions were investigated. An EPS high-yield strain Tf526 was selected, and the effects of seven independent fermentation factors (time, temperature, initial pH, inoculum size, shaking speed, carbon, and nitrogen source) on the EPS yield were evaluated. By single factor optimization test, yeast extract and glucose were chosen as nitrogen sources and carbon sources, respectively, and with initial pH of 6.0, inoculum size of 8%, shaking speed of 150 rpm, and culture at 25 °C for 72 h, the optimal yield of TEPS reached 0.76 ± 0.03 mg/mL. Additionally, A-722MP resin showed the most efficient decoloration ratio compared to six other tested resins. Furthermore, optimal decoloration parameters of A-722MP resin were obtained as follows: decoloration time of 2 h, resins dosage of 2 g, and temperature of 30 °C. Decoloration ratio, deproteinization ratio, and polysaccharide retention ratio were 62.14 ± 2.3%, 81.21 ± 2.13%, and 73.42 ± 1.96%, respectively. Furthermore, the crude TEPS was extracted and four polysaccharide fractions were isolated and purified as Tf1-a, Tf1-b, Tf2, and Tf3 by the DEAE-Sepharose FF column and the Sephasryl S100 column. In general, the antioxidant activities of the Lf1-a and Lf1-b were lower compared with Vc at the concentration of 0.1 to 3 mg/mL, but the FRAP assay, DPPH scavenging activity, and hydroxyl radical scavenging activity analysis still revealed that Tf1-a and Tf1-b possess significant antioxidant activities in vitro. At the concentration of 3 mg/mL, the reducing power of Lf1-a and Lf1-b reached 0.86 and 0.70, the maximum DPPH radical were 54.23 ± 1.68% and 61.62 ± 2.73%, and the maximum hydroxyl radicals scavenging rates were 58.76 ± 2.58% and 45.81 ± 1.79%, respectively. Moreover, there were significant correlations (r > 0.8) among the selected concentrations and antioxidant activities of TEPS major fractions Tf1-a and Tf1-b. Therefore, it is expected that Tf1-a and Tf1-b polysaccharide fractions from fermented TEPS may serve as active ingredients in functional foods.

Abstract
Brown seaweeds usually contain alginate as a major polymer. The second major sulfated polymer in brown seaweeds is fucoidan, which has huge potential in medicinal applications. In this study, the photosynthetic pigments from Turbinaria decurrens were first extracted using chloroform/methanol in the ratio of 1:1 (v/v), followed by fucoidan extraction with yields of 5.58% (crude) and 1.28% (purified fucoidan) from the dry weight of seaweed, whereas alginate was extracted with a yield of 14.7% DW of seaweed. The isolated fucoidan possessing anticoagulation property was identified and characterized as (1-3)-α-l-fucopyranosyl residues with sulfate groups primarily at the C4 position and to a lesser extent at the C2 position, whereas in the case of galactose, at the C3 and C6 positions. The AgNPs synthesized using isolated fucoidan exhibit strong anticoagulant activity and possess a good antibacterial property against Gram-negative clinical bacteria. Functional groups such as O-H, C-H, and S=O associated with sugar residues in sulfated fucoidan are involved in the synthesis of the nanoparticles with a spherical shape, size ranging from 10 to 60 nm, and showing polydispersity. From this study, we conclude that fucoidan-coated anionic AgNPs synthesized from T. decurrens have tremendous potential in drug development.

Abstract
Non-conventional extraction of bioactive metabolites could provide sustainable alternative techniques to preserve the potency of antioxidants and antiviral compounds extracted from macro-algae. In this paper, we first reviewed the antioxidant and antiviral potential of the active metabolites that exist in the three known macro-algae classes; Phaeophyceae, Rhodophyceae, and Chlorophyceae, and a comparison between their activities is discussed. Secondly, a review of conventional and non-conventional extraction methods is undertaken. The review then focused on identifying the optimal extraction method of sulphated polysaccharide from macro-algae that exhibits both antiviral and antioxidant activity. The review finds that species belonging to the Phaeophyceae and Rhodophceae classes are primarily potent against herpes simplex virus, followed by human immunodeficiency virus and influenza virus. At the same time, species belonging to Chlorophyceae class are recorded by most of the scholars to have antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus 1. Additionally, all three macro-algae classes exhibit antioxidant activity, the potency of which is a factor of the molecular structure of the bioactive metabolite as well as the extraction method applied.

A fucoidan, sulfated polysaccharide, was extracted from the brown seaweed Cystoseira schiffneri during 4 harvest periods (December, April, July, and September) and studied for its structural and chemical properties. The Cystoseira schiffneri fucoidan (CSF) showed important variation in sulfate content ranging from 7.8% in December to 34.8% in July. This was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies showing characteristic signals of sulfated polysaccharides. Molecular mass of the CSF varied as a function of season from 3,745 in December to 26,390 Da in July. Gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy showed that CSF fractions were "mannogalactofucans" composed mainly of mannose, fucose, and galactose with low levels of other monosaccharides. Moreover, interesting in vitro antioxidant activities that depend on the harvest season were noted for CSF. Thus, the present work might contribute to establish criteria for extracting bioactive fucoidans from an endemic Tunisian seaweed C. schiffneri.

Abstract
In recent years, researchers across various fields have shown a keen interest in the exploitation of biocompatible natural polymer materials, especially the development and application of seaweed polysaccharides. Seaweed polysaccharides are a multi-component mixture composed of one or more monosaccharides, which have the functions of being anti-virus, anti-tumor, anti-mutation, anti-radiation and enhancing immunity. These biological activities allow them to be applied in various controllable and sustained anti-inflammatory and anticancer drug delivery systems, such as seaweed polysaccharide-based nanoparticles, microspheres and gels, etc. This review summarizes the advantages of alginic acid, carrageenan and other seaweed polysaccharides, and focuses on their application in gel drug delivery systems (such as nanogels, microgels and hydrogels). In addition, recent literature reports and applications of seaweed polysaccharides are also discussed.

Abstract
In the current review, compositional data on fucoidans extracted from more than hundred different species were surveyed through the available literature. The analysis of crude extracts, purified extracts or carefully isolated fractions is included in tabular form, discriminating the seaweed source by its taxonomical order (and sometimes the family). This survey was able to encounter some similarities between the different species, as well as some differences. Fractions which were obtained through anion-exchange chromatography or cationic detergent precipitation showed the best separation patterns: the fractions with low charge correspond mostly to highly heterogeneous fucoidans, containing (besides fucose) other monosaccharides like xylose, galactose, mannose, rhamnose, and glucuronic acid, and contain low-sulfate/high uronic acid proportions, whereas those with higher total charge usually contain mainly fucose, accompanied with variable proportions of galactose, are highly sulfated and show almost no uronic acids. The latter fractions are usually the most biologically active. Fractions containing intermediate proportions of both polysaccharides appear at middle ionic strengths. This pattern is common for all the orders of brown seaweeds, and most differences appear from the seaweed source (habitat, season), and from the diverse extraction, purification, and analytitcal methods. The Dictyotales appear to be the most atypical order, as usually large proportions of mannose and uronic acids appear, and thus they obscure the differences between the fractions with different charge. Within the family Alariaceae (order Laminariales), the presence of sulfated galactofucans with high galactose content (almost equal to that of fucose) is especially noteworthy.

Abstract
The laminarans are biologically active water-soluble polysaccharide (1,3;1,6-β-D-glucans) of brown algae. These polysaccharides are an attractive object for research due to its relatively simple structure, low toxicity, and various biological effects. 1,3-β-D-glucanases are an effective tool for studying the structure of laminarans, and can also be used to obtain new biologically active derivatives. This review is to outline what is currently known about laminarans and enzymes that catalyze of their transformation. We focused on information about sources, structure and properties of laminarans and 1,3-β-D-glucanases, methods of obtaining and structural elucidation of laminarans, and biological activity of laminarans and products of their enzymatic transformation. It has an increased focus on the immunomodulating and anticancer activity of laminarans and their derivatives.

Abstract
This work was performed to compare the effect of two water-extraction methods of fucoidan from Sargassum tenerrimum on their chemical composition, antioxidant capacity and antimicrobial activity after hydrothermal depolymerization. The number of extraction steps and ethanol concentration used for extraction were different between the two methods. Extraction yield of fucoidan obtained from the first method (DFM1) and the second method (DFM2) were 3.68 and 1.09%, respectively (P < 0.05). The IC50 value of DPPH radical scavenging activity for DFM1 was 1.93 times more than DFM2. The Fe+2 ions chelating activity were 78.3% for DFM1 and 89.4% for DFM2 at 10 mg/mL concentration. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration of DFM2 were lower compared to DFM1 for Enterococcus faecalis and Escherichia coli The DFM2 was more effective to decrease the MIC value of chloramphenicol on the gram negative strains than DFM1. Both of the fucoidans showed a synergistic effect in combination with chloramphenicol to inhibit the growth of Escherichia coli Based on the results of this study, depolymerized fucoidans can also be more considered as effective antibacterial agent with synergistic potential in combination with antibiotics to decrease the prescribed doses of antibiotic drugs in humans and animals.

Abstract
Abelmoschus esculentus L (okra) is widely used as a healthy vegetable and favourable source of dietary medicine. Okra flowers which are by-products of okra, are rich in polysaccharide, polyphenols and trace elements etc., however, except a few for health tea, most of them were discarded as the waste of resources. In this study, a polysaccharide named AEFP22 was extracted, purified and identified from okra flowers, and its physicochemical property and antioxidant activity were also elucidated. AEFP22, with a molecular weight of 2.741 × 105 Da, was composed of Rha, GalA and Gal in the ratio of 1: 1.02: 0.86. The methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis indicated AEFP22 was composed of [2)-α-D-Rhap-(1 → 4)-α-D-GalpA-(1 → 2,4)-α-D-Rhap-(1 → 4)-α-D-GalpA-(1] with branch of terminal T-α-D-Galp pointed at C4 of 1,2,4-α-D-Rhap. The Conge-red test, Atomic force microscope (AFM) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM) further revealed the triple-helical conformation, irregular sheet structure with molecule aggregations of AEFP22. The physicochemical property analysis indicated AEFP22 possessed stable thermal property and exhibited shear-thinning and normal Newtonian fluid in different concentrations, -7.04 mV zeta potential and polymerization phenomenon existed in AEFP22 solution. AEFP22 exhibited good 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability. These results indicated potential utilization of AEFP22 in nutritional food and material application.

Abstract
Astragalus polysaccharide (APS) has attracted growing interests in the field of anti-cancer by direct killing effect and improving immune function. In this study, the structure and composition of APS was determined, following the evaluation of in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor activity of APS targeted macrophages and host immune system based on immunoregulated strategy. The results indicated that APS had no direct cytotoxicity against 4T1 cells, but APS mediated macrophages could significantly inhibit the growth of 4T1 cells by the induction of cell cycle arrest (G2 phase) and cell apoptosis. APS mediated macrophages promoted the apoptosis of 4T1 cells mainly through the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. The in vivo findings demonstrated that APS could markedly improve the thymus index and spleen index, and restore the structure of the damaged thymus and spleen tissue. APS could significantly enhance the proliferation of spleen lymphocytes and increase phagocytosis of peritoneal macrophages in mice. Furthermore, APS was capable of up-regulating the expression of IL-2, TNF-α and IFN-γ in peripheral blood. APS combined with 5-FU could improve the anti-tumor effect accompanied by the immunosuppressive alleviation of 5-FU on immune system, which may be suitable as an immune adjuvant for chemotherapy.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) are produced endogenously in our body, or introduced through external factors, such as pollution, cigarette smoke, and excessive sunlight exposure. In normal conditions, there is a physiological balance between pro-oxidant species and antioxidant molecules that are able to counteract the detrimental effect of the former. Nevertheless, when this homeostasis is disrupted, the resulting oxidative stress can lead to several pathological conditions, from inflammation to cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. In this review, we report on the recent developments of different polymeric formulations that are able to reduce the oxidative stress, from natural extracts, to films and hydrogels, and finally to nanoparticles (NPs).

Abstract
Essential oils (EOs) are known for uses in various fields such as perfume, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and food industries. Agricultural wastes are among the resources of EOs that produced and disposed of in large quantities annually. Hence, in this study, for the first time, EOs available from pistachio fruit [fruit pistachio shells (FPS) and fruit pistachio cluster (FPC)] were used to the extraction of EOs. The Clevenger device and distilled water were used to extract EOs. The amount of total phenolic compounds (TPC) by Folin-ciocalteu reagent and the radical scavenging ability (RSA%) of FPS and FPC extracted by the soaking method were also measured. The RSA% of EOs and extracts in the presence of DPPH free radicals was evaluated by the IC50 index. Chemical composition of EOs detected by mass spectrometric gas chromatography. Notwithstanding amounts of extraction efficiency by water in the soaking method from FPS and FPC was 4.6% and 3.2% respectively, EOs extraction efficiency from FPC and FPS was 2.10% and 0.13% respectively. TPC in FPS and FPC was 958.38 and 796.25 mgGA/100g dry material respectively. The amount of IC50 of FPS was 3760.69 ppm and near to RSA% of BHT (2354.36 ppm). Statistical difference was observed between the RSA of EOs and positive control antioxidant (P < 0.05). The RSA of antioxidant extracts and TPC showed positively correlated. The major compounds identified in FPS were the D-limonene, α-thujene and terpinolene, abundance respectively, and the major components of FPC were α-thujene and α-pinene, abundance respectively.

Abstract
In the recent era, bioactive compounds from plants have received great attention because of their vital health-related activities, such as antimicrobial activity, antioxidant activity, anticoagulant activity, anti-diabetic activity, UV protection, antiviral activity, hypoglycemia, etc. Previous studies have already shown that polysaccharides found in plants are not likely to be toxic. Based on these inspirational comments, most research focused on the isolation, identification, and bioactivities of polysaccharides. A large number of biologically active polysaccharides have been isolated with varying structural and biological activities. In this review, a comprehensive summary is provided of the recent developments in the physical and chemical properties as well as biological activities of polysaccharides from a number of important natural sources, such as wheat bran, orange peel, barely, fungi, algae, lichen, etc. This review also focused on biomedical applications of polysaccharides. The contents presented in this review will be useful as a reference for future research as well as for the extraction and application of these bioactive polysaccharides as a therapeutic agent.

Abstract
Cosmetology is the developing branch of science, having direct impact on the society. The cosmetic sector is interested in finding novel biological alternatives which can enhance the product attributes as well as it can substitute chemical compounds. Many of the compounds are having biological origin and are acquire from bacteria, fungi, and algae. A range of biological compounds, like bio-surfactant, vitamins, antioxidants, pigments, enzymes, peptides have promising features and beneficial properties. Moreover, these products can be produced commercially with ease. The review will encompass the importance and use of microbial compounds for new cosmetic formulations as well as products associated with it.

Abstract
This review presents an analysis of works devoted to the anti-human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) activity of algae metabolites-sulfated polysaccharides (fucoidans, carrageenans), lectins, laminarans, and polyphenols. Despite the presence of a significant number of antiretroviral drugs, the development of new therapeutic and prophylactic agents against this infection remains very urgent problem. This is due to the variability of HIV, the absence of an animal model (except monkeys) and natural immunity to this virus and the toxicity of therapeutic agents and their high cost. In this regard, the need for new therapeutic approaches and broad-spectrum drugs, which in addition to antiviral effects can have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory effects, and to which the minimum resistance of HIV strains would be formed. These requirements meet the biologically active substances of marine algae. The results of experimental and clinical studies conducted in vitro and in vivo are presented, and the issues of the anti-HIV activity of these compounds are considered depending on their structural features. On the whole, the presented data prove the high efficiency of seaweed metabolites and justify the possibility of their use as a potential basis for the development of new drugs with a wide spectrum of activity.

Abstract
The sulfated polysaccharide (SP) was isolated from the brown alga S. tenerrimum. The chemical composition of SP composed of 57 ± 0.29% of total sugar, 1.14 ± 0.28% of protein and 25.6 ± 0.45% of sulfate. Elemental analysis of SP shows 28.8% of carbon, 4.02% of hydrogen and 0.29% of nitrogen. The molecular weight of SP was estimated as 31 kDa. Further, the SP was characterized through FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GC-MS, XRD and TGA analysis. The DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity of SP showed 34.03-62.70% and 22.94-38.04% at the concentration of 25-125 μg/mL respectively. In addition, SP exerted a protective role against H2O2 mediated oxidative stress in fibroblast cells through scavenging intracellular ROS. Furthermore, ROS generation and cell death were significantly decreased in SP treated zebrafish embryos at 150 μg/mL, whereas the survival rate was increased. The protective effect of SP against oxidative stress might be utilized in pharmacological industries.

Abstract
Seaweed-derived polysaccharides including agar and alginate, have found widespread applications in biomedical research and medical therapeutic applications including wound healing, drug delivery, and tissue engineering. Given the recent increases in the incidence of diabetes, obesity and hyperlipidemia, there is a pressing need for low cost therapeutics that can economically and effectively slow the progression of atherosclerosis. Marine polysaccharides have been consumed by humans for millennia and are available in large quantities at low cost. Polysaccharides such as fucoidan, laminarin sulfate and ulvan have shown promise in reducing atherosclerosis and its accompanying risk factors in animal models. However, others have been tested in very limited context in scientific studies. In this review, we explore the current state of knowledge for these promising therapeutics and discuss the potential and challenges of using seaweed derived polysaccharides as therapies for atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Sodium alginate from Nizimuddinia zanardini (an Iranian brown algae) was extracted with acid and alkaline solutions, partially and totally hydrolyzed and analyzed for its biochemical composition. 1H NMR spectroscopy, SEC-MALLS, HPAEC and FT-IR were performed to determine its structure and its physico-chemical properties. This alginate has a M/G ratio of 1.1, a molecular weight of 103 kDa, a polydispersity index of 1.22, and an intrinsic viscosity of 342 mL/g. Its antioxidant activity was tested by DPPH radical scavenging showing its potential for food preservation. Rheological properties of solutions of this alginate with concentrations between 1 and 5% (w/v) in water and 0.5 M NaCl were investigated indicating a Newtonian fluid type behaviour in water and a shear thinning fluid type behaviour in NaCl solutions.

Abstract
The hazardous effects of current nanoparticle synthesis methods have steered researchers to focus on the development of newer environmentally friendly and green methods for synthesizing nanoparticles using nontoxic chemicals. The development of environmentally friendly methods of nanoparticle synthesis with different sizes and shapes is one of the pressing challenges for the current nanotechnology. Several novel green approaches for the synthesis of AuNPs have been explored using different natural sources, such as plants, algae, bacteria, and fungi. Among organisms, algae and blue-green algae are of particular interest for nanoparticle synthesis. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have a range of applications in medicine, diagnostics, catalysis, and sensors because of their significant key roles in important fields. AuNPs have attracted a significant interest for use in a variety of applications. The widespread use of AuNPs can be accredited to a combination of optical, physical, and chemical properties as well as the miscellany of size, shape, and surface composition that has been adopted through green synthesis methods.

Abstract
The cosmetics industry is one of the most profitable in the world today. This multi-billion-dollar industry has a profound sociological impact worldwide. Its influence is global, with most individuals being concerned with conserving their physical appearance, beauty, and youth. The consumers' desire for novel, better, and safer products has stimulated the utilization of natural-product-based cosmeceutical formulations over synthetic chemicals. With remarkable advancements in marine bioresource technology, algal polysaccharides have gained much attention as bioactive ingredients in cosmeceuticals. Algae biosynthesize a variety of polysaccharides including fucoidans, alginates, carrageenans, galactans, agar, porphyran, glucans, and ulvans, all of which exhibit distinctive structural and functional properties. Many of these materials have been proven to possess skin-protective effects, including anti-wrinkle, lightening, moisturizing, UV protective, antioxidative, and anti-inflammatory activity. Moreover, they have a wide spectrum of physicochemical properties, such as the ability to form hydrogels, which extend their utilization as emulsifiers, stabilizers, and viscosity controlling ingredients in cosmeceuticals. Accordingly, algal hydrocolloids and their synthetic derivatives can also be applied in tissue engineering and cosmetic surgery. The challenge is to increase awareness about these polysaccharides and consequently generate value-added products. This review discusses the beneficial biological and physicochemical properties of algal polysaccharides, highlighting their potential in cosmeceutical applications.

Abstract
This study comparatively evaluated the effects of different extraction methods on yield, structural features and antioxidant activities of Laminaria japonica (L. japonica) polysaccharides. Results showed that acid, water and alkaline extracted L. japonica polysaccharides (LJP-CA, LJP-W and LJP-A, respectively) differed significantly. Among three polysaccharides, LJP-W showed the highest viscosity with high uronic acid content and average molecular weight, whereas LJP-CA showed the lowest viscosity with low uronic acid and high sulfate content with moderate average molecular weight. LJP-CA was mainly composed of fucose, mannose and galactose, but the proportion of glucose was greatly increased in LJP-W and LJP-A. LJP-W had an even and smooth sheet-like appearance, while LJP-CA and LJP-A exhibited irregular and rough fragments or particles with stronger antioxidant activities. These results suggest that acid and alkali would propose an improved process for polysaccharide preparation from L. japonica and to exploit its potential application as a functional ingredient in food application.

Abstract
The relationship between molecular structure and bioactivity was evaluated for alginates obtained under different extraction methods (water, acid, alcalase and cellulase) from Sargassum angustifolium. The use of enzymes considerably reduced protein (from 14.58% to <0.4%) and polyphenol (from 16.0% to <1.7mg GA/g sample) contaminations of alginates compared to those of water and acid. The FT-IR spectrum revealed that extraction method did not affect the structure of the recovered alginates. The highest molecular weight (Mw) (557.1×103g/mol) was found in acid treated alginate while the Mw of cellulase assistant alginate (356.2×103g/mol) was the minimum. The SVg values varied from 2.79-5.17cm3/g revealing the loosed conformational structures of alcalase and cellulase assistant alginates. Alcalase assistant alginate stimulated RAW264.7 cells to release nitric oxide and inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IL-1, IL-6, IL-10 and IL-12. Enzyme treated alginates showed maximum DPPH radical scavenging activity and reducing power. Therefore, the present results showed the determinant effect of pretreatment during the extraction process of alginate and the beneficial influence of enzymatic process when biological functions of alginates are of high interest in the industry.

Abstract
In order to study the influence of amino group on antioxidant activity of oligosaccharides, an amino disaccharide, 6,6'-diamino-6,6'-dideoxytrehalose (DAMDT) was successfully prepared in this paper, and its antioxidant activities against DPPH, superoxide, hydrogen peroxide, and hydroxyl radicals, and reducing power were evaluated, respectively. The results indicated that DAMDT had better antioxidant activity than trehalose at any tested concentration. The influence of amino group on antioxidant activity of disaccharides is positive based on the results in this paper, and amination should be an effective method to improve the bioactivity of saccharides.

Abstract
Ulcerative colitis (UC) results from colonic epithelial barrier defects and impaired mucosal immune responses. In this study, we aimed to investigate the modifying effects of a Spirogyra neglecta extract (SNE), a polysaccharide extract (PE) and a chloroform fraction (CF) on dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice and to determine the mechanisms. To induce colitis, ICR mice received 3% DSS in their drinking water for 7 days. Seven days preceding the DSS treatment, oral administration of SNE, PE and CF at doses of 50, 25 and 0.25 mg/kg body weight (low dose), 200, 100 and 1 mg/kg body weight (high dose) and vehicle was started and continued for 14 days. Histologic findings showed that DSS-induced damage of colonic epithelial structure and inflammation was attenuated in mice pre-treated with SNE, PE and CF. Furthermore, SNE and PE significantly protected colonic epithelial cells from DSS-induced cell cycle arrest, while SNE, PE and CF significantly diminished apoptosis. Proteome analysis demonstrated that SNE and PE might ameliorate DSS-induced colitis by inducing antioxidant enzymes, restoring impaired mitochondria function, and regulating inflammatory cytokines, proliferation and apoptosis. These results suggest that SNE and PE could prevent DSS-induced colitis in ICR mice by protection against and/or aiding recovery from damage to the colonic epithelium, reducing ROS and maintaining normal mitochondrial function and apoptosis.

Abstract
Edible seaweeds are a good source of antioxidants, dietary fibers, essential amino acids, vitamins, phytochemicals, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and minerals. Many studies have evaluated the gelling, thickening and therapeutic properties of seaweeds when they are used individually. This review gives an overview on the nutritional, textural, sensorial, and health-related properties of food products enriched with seaweeds and seaweed extracts. The effect of seaweed incorporation on properties of meat, fish, bakery, and other food products were highlighted in depth. Moreover, the positive effects of foods enriched with seaweeds and seaweed extracts on different lifestyle diseases such as obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and diabetes were also discussed. The results of the studies demonstrated that the addition of seaweeds, in powder or extract form, can improve the nutritional and textural properties of food products. Additionally, low-fat products with less calories and less saturated fatty acids can be prepared using seaweeds. Moreover, the addition of seaweeds also affected the health properties of food products. The results of these studies demonstrated that the health value, shelf-life and overall quality of foods can be improved through the addition of either seaweeds or seaweed extracts.
