Abstract
BACKGROUND Mitochondrial dysfunction induces ferroptosis in renal tubular epithelial cells (TECs). Studies have shown that myricanol maintains muscle cell function by enhancing mitochondrial energy metabolism. HYPOTHESIS Myricanol delays renal fibrosis by maintaining mitochondrial integrity and inhibiting ferroptosis in TECs. METHODS Mice kidney lacking mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM), blood specimens, or pathological sections of renal tissue from patients with renal failure were used to explore the relationship between mitochondrial and renal functions. Erastin induced-TECs ferroptosis was used to study the potential mechanism by which TFAM regulates renal fibrosis. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) mice were utilized to explore the anti-fibrotic effects of myricanol. RESULTS The number of mitochondria and TFAM expression were decreased in human blood samples and pathological sections. Renal TFAM-deficient mice exhibited abnormalities in renal function, including ferroptosis and fibrosis. Ferrostatin-1 significantly inhibited renal fibrosis by preventing TECs ferroptosis. Transcriptional sequencing results indicated that zinc and ring finger 1 (ZNRF1) were important downstream genes of TFAM that regulate ferroptosis. We demonstrated that TFAM deficiency and ferroptosis, which destroyed interaction between ZNRF1 and the iron transport-related protein lipocalin-2 (LCN2), but myricanol clould reverse this effect. Overexpression of ZNRF1 efficiently maintained mitochondrial integrity and inhibited renal fibrosis. Myricanol ameliorated transforming growth factor β1-induced mitochondrial impairment. We firstly confirmed that myricanol efficiently improved renal function and suppresses fibrosis in CKD mice. CONCLUSIONS Myricanol efficiently inhibit fibrosis through activating TFAM to stimulate the interaction between ZNRF1 and LCN2.

Abstract
The Caatinga, an exclusively Brazilian biome, stands as a reservoir of remarkable biodiversity. Its significance transcends ecological dimensions, given the direct reliance of the local population on its resources for sustenance and healthcare. While Myrtaceae, a pivotal botanical family within the Brazilian flora, has been extensively explored for its medicinal and nutritional attributes, scant attention has been directed towards its contextual relevance within the Caatinga's local communities. Consequently, this inaugural systematic review addresses the ethnobotanical roles of Myrtaceae within the Caatinga, meticulously anchored in the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. We searched Scopus, MEDLINE/Pubmed, Scielo, and LILIACS. No date-range filter was applied. An initial pool of 203 articles was carefully scrutinized, ultimately yielding 31 pertinent ethnobotanical studies elucidating the utility of Myrtaceae amongst the Caatinga's indigenous populations. Collectively, they revealed seven distinct utilization categories spanning ~54 species and 11 genera. Psidium and Eugenia were the genera with the most applications. The most cited categories of use were food (27 species) and medicinal (22 species). The importance of accurate species identification was highlighted, as many studies did not provide enough information for reliable identification. Additionally, the potential contribution of Myrtaceae fruits to food security and human health was explored. The diversity of uses demonstrates how this family is a valuable resource for local communities, providing sources of food, medicine, energy, and construction materials. This systematic review also highlights the need for more ethnobotanical studies to understand fully the relevance of Myrtaceae species in the Caatinga, promoting biodiversity conservation, as well as support for local populations.

Abstract
In this study, the physicochemical properties, antioxidant capacity, and volatile compounds of the juices of different guava cultivars before and after pectinase treatment were evaluated. The results showed that the guava juice of the small fragrant (SF) cultivar exhibited the highest ascorbic acid concentration (1761.09 mg/L), and the highest contents of total phenolics (329.52 mg GAE/L) and total flavonoids (411.13 mg RE/L) were both found in the juice of the watermelon red (WR) cultivar. After pectinase treatment, the juice yield and the titratable acid, sugar components, total phenolics and total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity levels of the guava juices were all higher than those of the non-pectinase group. However, lower sensory evaluation scores were obtained in the pectinase-treated guava juices. Aldehydes and terpenoids were the main flavor components in the guava juices, which were responsible for the aroma of the juice, while their relative contents were different in the four cultivar guava juices. Furthermore, pectinase treatment could change the amounts and relative contents of volatile compounds in the guava juice. During the pectinase treatment process, the relative contents of the main aroma constituents in the guava juices were significantly decreased. The findings of this research provide valuable information for the processing of guava juice.

Abstract
Guavinoside B (GUB) is the main active substance in guava fruit and shows promising biological activities. In this study, the inhibitory activity and mechanism of GUB on α-glucosidase were studied by using spectroscopic techniques, kinetic analysis, and molecular docking. Results indicated that GUB possessed significant inhibition ability on α-glucosidase, which was about 10 times that of acarbose. The GUB was a mixed-type inhibitor, which suppressed the activity of α-glucosidase through a reversible process. Fluorescence analysis revealed that GUB quenched the fluorescence of α-glucosidase statically, the formation of GUB-α-glucosidase complex was a spontaneous and exothermic process, van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic interaction were the predominant driving forces, only one single-binding site on α-glucosidase was involved in the binding process. GUB inserted into the hydrophobic pocket of α-glucosidase with 11 hydrogen bonds and two π-π stacking formed. The presence of GUB changed the microenvironment near the fluorescent amino acids of α-glucosidase, and the structure of α-glucosidase was slightly changed, eventually leading to the decrease of α-glucosidase activity. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a worldwide chronic metabolic disease threatening human health seriously. Guava fruit is a popular fruit, and its extracts were reported to show many biological activities. GUB is the main benzophenone glycoside in guava fruits. However, the inhibitory activity and mechanism of its specific active compound GUB are still unclear. Studies have shown that GUB could reversibly inhibit the activity of α-glucosidase, and its inhibitory ability was about 10 times that of acarbose. The kinetics and mechanism of inhibition were revealed. These will facilitate the further research and application of guava fruit and GUB in functional and healthy foods against hyperglycinaemia or even DM.

Abstract
Tropical fruits are defined as fruits that are grown in hot and humid regions within the Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn, covering most of the tropical and subtropical areas of Asia, Africa, Central America, South America, the Caribbean and Oceania. Depending on the cultivation area covered, economic value and popularity these tropical fruits are divided into major and minor tropical fruits. There is an annual increment of 3.8% in terms of commercialization of the tropical fruits. In total 26 minor tropical fruits (Kiwifruit, Lutqua, Carambola, Tree Tomato, Elephant apple, Rambutan, Bay berry, Mangosteen, Bhawa, Loquat, Silver berry, Durian, Persimon, Longan, Passion fruit, Water apple, Pulasan, Indian gooseberry, Guava, Lychee, Annona, Pitaya, Sapodilla, Pepino, Jaboticaba, Jackfruit) have been covered in this work. The nutritional composition, phytochemical composition, health benefits, traditional use of these minor tropical fruits and their role in food fortification have been portrayed.

Abstract
The chapter provides an overview of cardiovascular disease, a major cause of mortality worldwide. It relates economic and social impacts to the disease, especially in developing countries. One of the approaches to addressing this challenge is increasing awareness within society, through implementation of education programs. It is important for society to understand the types and roles of the risk factors leading to cardiovascular disease. Emphasis is on the role of functional food and nutraceuticals as dietary sources that could prevent development of cardiovascular disease. The chapter highlights roles of nutraceuticals and functional food sources from medical plants, seeds, berries, and tropical fruits in lowering risk factors. Key findings from trials conducted in Asia, China, Europe, and America provide supporting evidence for the importance of functional food to health, and its potential for modifying the level of risk factors related to cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Psidium guineense, popularly known as "araçá-do-campo", is used in popular medicine for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. Our research group studied an essential oil obtained from its leaves and reported anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. However, to date, the anti-inflammatory actions of the leaf extract have not been evaluated although the traditional folk use of this plant has these indications. AIM OF STUDY The current study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects and toxicity of the hydromethanolic extract of the leaves from P. guineense (HME-PG), as well as to investigate the chemical composition. MATERIALS AND METHODS HME-PG was chemically investigated by Ultra-high performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS). The antioxidant activity was evaluated with 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and malondialdehyde (MDA). Swiss mice were orally (p.o.) pretreated with HME-PG (30, 100 and 300 mg/kg), and after 1 h received carrageenan via paw injection (edema, cold sensitivity and mechanical hyperalgesia were analyzed) or pleural injection (leukocyte migration was analyzed after 4 h) and for nociception using the formalin model. Acute (14 days) and subacute (28 days) toxicity was assessed with female Wistar rats orally treated with 500 and 2000 mg/kg HME-PG. RESULTS HME-PG showed high levels of phenolic and flavonoid compounds. Six compounds were identified based on UHPLC-MS/MS analysis, including gallic acid, quercetin, 3'-formyl-2',4',6'-trihydroxy-5'-methyldihydrochalcone, vanillic acid, ursolic acid and corilagin. HME-PG exhibited an IC50 of 48.14 μg/mL in the MDA assay and an IC50 of 45.15 μg/mL in the DPPH test. The treatment with HME-PG (100 and 300 mg/kg) significantly inhibited edema at all time points evaluated, mechanical hyperalgesia after 4 h and the response to cold 3 and 4 h after carrageenan injection and anti-nociceptive effects in both phases of formalin nociception. All oral HME-PG treatments significantly inhibited leukocyte migration and plasma extravasation in the pleurisy model. Toxicity tests did not cause signs of toxicity in the treated animals. CONCLUSIONS The present study showed that HME-PG has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and no toxicity was detected after acute or subacute treatment with HME-PG, showing the possibility for the safe traditional use of P. guineense.

Abstract
Over recent decades, a number of studies have revealed the possible role of different types of diets, as well as the nutritional elements they are made up of, in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). To date, dietary factors have been identified to play a role in the prevention of COPD, with evidence from antioxidant nutrients, vitamins, and fiber intake. Additionally, certain dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean diet, together with other Western diets, provide evidence of the influence on COPD development, promoting lung health through nutritional approaches, and giving us an opportunity for intervention. The effect of diet on COPD is conveyed by 3 mechanisms: regulation of inflammation, oxidative stress, and carbon dioxide produced/oxygen intake. Current advances have begun to highlight the possible role of diet in modifying gene expression in certain individuals that predisposes them to COPD through epigenetic modifications. The relation between dietary intake and epigenetic factors has therefore outlined nutriepigenomics as a possible missing link in the relation between environmental exposure to smoke and the appearance of a subsequent chronic bronchial obstruction. This review summarizes the evidence regarding the influence of dietary patterns and nutrients and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms on COPD development and prevention with the aim of encouraging clinical research on the impact of dietary modifications on COPD-related clinical outcomes. This review highlights the importance of proposing and carrying out future studies focused on the modulating effects of certain nutrients on epigenetic changes in patients with specific COPD phenotypes (bronchiectasis, emphysema, asthma/COPD, chronic bronchitis), and their individual responses to cigarette smoking, environmental pollution, or other noxious particles. The objectives of these future studies must be directed to the development of novel therapeutic approaches and personalized management of COPD.

Abstract
Myelin consists of several layers of tightly compacted membranes that form an insulating sheath around axons. These membranes are highly enriched in cholesterol, which is essential for the myelination process. Proper myelination is crucial for various neurophysiological functions while demyelination may cause CNS disease, such as multiple sclerosis (MS). Recent studies demonstrated that demyelination occurs not only in the white matter but also in the grey matter, such as the hippocampus, which may cause cognitive deficits and mental disorders. Valproic acid (VPA) is an anticonvulsant agent prescribed for the treatment of epilepsy and seizure. Recently, VPA was reported to alter cholesterol metabolism in neural cells, suggesting that it may play an important role in myelin biogenesis. Here in this study, we found significant demyelination in the hippocampus of the mouse cuprizone model, which is accompanied by reduced cholesterol biosynthesis and increased anxiety-like behavior. VPA treatment, however, suppressed cuprizone-induced hippocampal demyelination and anxiety-like behavior by promoting cholesterol biosynthesis. These data identify an important role of VPA in the hippocampal demyelination process and the hippocampal demyelination-related behavior deficit via regulation of cholesterol biosynthesis, which provides new insights into the mechanisms of VPA as a protective agent against CNS demyelination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Post-partum physiological bleeding can cause post-partum mothers to experience anemia; often, post-partum mothers are limited by nutrient and fluid intake to keep the body strong and have ideal body weight.
AIM: The aim of the study is to knowing the difference between beet juice and Guava juice on erythrocyte and hematocrit (HTC) levels in post-partum mothers at Darul Imarah Health Center, Darul Imarah District, Aceh Besar District.
METHODS: This was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-post test design using a randomized controlled trial. The population of post-partum mothers in the Darul Imarah Health Center, Darul Imarah District, Aceh Besar District. The sample selection is purposive sampling with inclusion and exclusion criteria; the sample is 45 people.
RESULTS: The results showed differences in erythrocyte and HTC levels between before and after giving guava and iron (Fe) juices with a p-value of 0.00 <0.05. Beet juice increases the average erythrocytes and HTC levels higher than guava juice. There were significant differences in erythrocyte levels in the guava + Fe, beet + Fe, and control (Fe) treatment groups with a p-value of 0.001 <0.05. the difference in the average difference in erythrocyte levels between the guava and beet treatment groups was 0.03. The treatment group Bit + Fe had a higher mean erythrocyte level different than the guava + the treatment group and the control group (Fe). There was a significant difference in HTC levels in the guava + Fe, beet + Fe, and control (Fe) treatment groups with a p-value of 0.001 <0.05. the difference in the average difference in erythrocyte levels between the guava and beet treatment groups was 0.03. The treatment group Bit + Fe had a higher mean difference in HTC levels than the guava + the treatment group and the control group (Fe).
CONCLUSION: There is a significant difference in erythrocytes and HTC levels between before and after giving guava juice and beet juice to post-partum mothers with a p-value of 0.00 <0.05. Beet juice increases the average level of erythrocytes and HTC, which is higher than guava juice in post-partum mothers at the Darul Imarah Health Center.

Abstract
Twelve cinnamoyl glucoside derivatives were prepared by glycosylation of glucosyl trichloroacetimidate and cinnamic acid derivatives, followed by dechloroacetylation with a pyridine/H2O mixture. Their structures were characterized by 1H and 13C NMR, as well as mass analysis. All the products were tested for their antiproliferation activities against murine melanoma B16-F10 cell line. Compounds 4e-4j were able to inhibit the proliferation of murine melanoma B16-F10 cell line with IC50 values of 17.38 ± 0.07, 9.87 ± 0.09, 9.69 ± 0.12, 29.42 ± 0.04, 32.95 ± 0.08, 25.68 ± 0.09 μM, respectively.

Abstract
The Myrtaceae family is considered one of the largest known botanical families and the genus Psidium is among the most economically interesting. Psidium genus comprises approximately 112 species, and it has been extensively studied, mainly because of Psidium guavaja species. Phytochemical investigations confirmed the presence of phenolics as the main compounds, as well as the essential oils, which were also widely investigated. Pharmacological studies report analgesic, anthelminthic, acaricidal, antihiperglicemic, among other biological activities for different species. The present review covers the relevant literature until 2019 and outlines the current data on chemical composition, preclinical and clinical studies on Psidium species, as well as the main possible mechanisms of action responsible for the described activities. Therefore, it can provide a reference for pharmaceutical research and clinical application of this genus.

Abstract
In Costa Rica, two species of Psidium fruits, P. guajava and P. friedrichsthalianum, are widely consumed as food and used in folk medicine. Although studies have revealed the health effects of these fruits, there has been little research showing the antiplatelet activity of these species. This work evaluated the antiplatelet potential of aqueous extracts made from leaves and fruits of pink guava and Costa Rican guava. Platelet aggregation was induced by the platelet agonists ADP, TRAP-6, collagen and PMA. Platelet activation and secretion were studied using flow cytometry. The chemical profiles of the four extracts were characterized using UPLC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS. The studies revealed that the aqueous extracts of leaves and fruits of P. guajava and P. friedrichsthalianum inhibited platelet aggregation induced by ADP (4 µM), TRAP-6 (5 µM), collagen (1 µg mL-1) and PMA (100 nM), and the effect was dependent on the extract concentration. Extracts of leaves and fruits of pink guava and Costa Rican guava reduced secretion of P-selectin and activation of GP IIb/IIIa. The extracts of leaves and fruits of pink guava and Costa Rican guava proved to be a rich source of phenolic compounds, mainly quercetin aglycones and proanthocyanidins derived from (epi) catechin units. Other compounds such as ellagitannins, and benzophenones were also putatively identified. This research showed that P. guajava and P. friedrichsthalianum could potentially be used for the prevention of thrombotic events.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although myricetin exerts anti-inflammation, anti-cancer, and anti-oxidation effects, the relationship between myricetin and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) -stimulated inflammation in A549 cells remains unclear. This study sought to assess whether myricetin has an anti-inflammatory effect on TNF-α-induced A549 cells and clarify the potential mechanisms. METHODS Cell viability was examined with a Cell Counting Kit-8, and cytokine levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and reverse transcription-quantitative PCR. Potential mechanisms were further explored by western blotting, immunofluorescence, and SIRT1 activity assays. RESULTS In A549 cells, TNF-α stimulation upregulated the production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and interleukin-8 (IL-8). Moreover, TNF-α activated the nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathway, as confirmed by IκB-α degradation, and phosphorylation and nuclear migration of NF-κB p65. However, pretreatment with myricetin significantly attenuated the observed responses triggered by TNF-α. Mechanistically, myricetin strongly increased the deacetylase activity through decreasing phosphorylation, but not expression, of sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) in TNF-α-stimulated A549 cells. Myricetin-mediated SIRT1 activation was further evidenced by the decreased acetylation of NF-κB p65 and p53. Subsequently, all of these concurrent changes were reversed by the addition of salermide (SIRT1 inhibitor), illustrating the critical role of SIRT1 in mediation of anti-inflammatory processes by myricetin. CONCLUSIONS Myricetin, an enhancer of SIRT1, inhibited TNF-α-induced NF-κB activation in A549 cells, therefore, reducing their inflammatory response. Our findings provide insight for novel therapies for inflammation-related diseases, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Abstract
Psidium (Myrtaceae) comprises approximately 266 species, distributed in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Psidium taxa have great ecological, economic, and medicinal relevance due to their essential oils' chemical diversity and biological potential. This review reports 18 Psidium species growing around the world and the chemical and biological properties of their essential oils. Chemically, 110 oil records are reported with significant variability of volatile constituents, according to their seasonality and collection sites. Monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes with acyclic (C10 and C15), p-menthane, pinane, bisabolane, germacrane, caryophyllane, cadinane, and aromadendrane skeleton-types, were the primary constituents. The essential oils showed various biological activities, including antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial, phytotoxic, larvicidal, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic properties. This review contributes to the Psidium species rational and economic exploration as natural sources to produce new drugs.

Abstract
This study was aimed at investigating the phytochemical constituents, antifungal properties and antibiotic-modifying activity of the aqueous crude extract and fractions of Amburana cearensis seeds (CEFAC). The CEFAC were chemically characterized by LC-MS/MS-QTOF. In addition, the antifungal activity was assayed by the microdilution method against strains of Candida albicans. The phytochemical profile of CEFAC exhibited phenolic compounds, organic acids, and polyphenols. The results of the assessment of antifungal activity reveled an IC50 ranging from 45.6 to 2048 µg/mL. Interestingly, when CEFAC was associated with Fluconazole, we evidenced a decreased IC50 (1.81-11.9 µg/mL), suggesting a synergism with antibiotic. It was possible to identify in the crude extract and fractions several phenolic compounds, organic acids, and some polyphenols in positive ionization mode. These results suggest that CEFAC may present compounds with the ability to interact and act synergistically with antimicrobial drugs, highlighting its potential as an alternative source for the development of new antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
Despite recent advancements in clinical drugs, diabetes treatment still needs further progress. As such, ongoing research has attempted to determine the precise molecular mechanisms of the disorder. Specifically, evidence supports that several signaling pathways play pivotal roles in the development of diabetes. However, the exact molecular mechanisms of diabetes still need to be explored. This study examines exciting new hallmarks for the strict involvement of autophagy and TGF-β signaling pathways in the pathogenesis of diabetes and the design of novel therapeutic strategies. Dysregulated autophagy in pancreatic β cells due to hyperglycemia, oxidative stress, and inflammation is associated with diabetes and accompanied by dysregulated autophagy in insulin target tissues and the progression of diabetic complications. Consequently, several therapeutic agents such as adiponectin, ezetimibe, GABA tea, geniposide, liraglutide, guava extract, and vitamin D were shown to inhibit diabetes and its complications through modulation of the autophagy pathway. Another pathway, TGF-β signaling pathway, appears to play a part in the progression of diabetes, insulin resistance, and autoimmunity in both type 1 and 2 diabetes and complications in diabetes. Subsequently, drugs that target TGF-β signaling, especially naturally derived ones such as resveratrol, puerarin, curcumin, hesperidin, and silymarin, as well as Propolis, Lycopus lucidus, and Momordica charantia extracts, may become promising alternatives to current drugs in diabetes treatment. This review provides keen insights into novel therapeutic strategies for the medical care of diabetes.

Abstract
The finding of economical and practical applications for milk whey is still a challenge for dairy industries. This paper presents information about the development of a probiotic-prebiotic beverage based on Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) and Costa Rican guava (CRG) fruit pulp with industrial potential. First, a supplemented whey media was developed for LGG growth, and the whey-supplemented media was used for fermentation in bioreactors. LGG reached a maximum growth rate of 0.32 hr-1 after 48 hr of fermentation. The whey-grown probiotics were then mixed with CRG pulp to produce the probiotic-prebiotic beverage. The survival kinetics of LGG in the formulated drink was not affected by the addition of CRG pulp (P > 0.05), and the shelf-life of the inoculated beverage surpassed 40 days with a minimum population of 106 colony forming units (CFU)/mL. Properties as pH, fructose, glucose, sucrose, and proanthocyanidins (PACs) content exhibited a significant difference after storage time (P < 0.05). Finally, three different formulas of the beverage with different whey content were compared through sensory evaluation. The prototype with 50% whey content was one of the most valuable beverage formulas according to the organoleptic parameters, which remarks about the possibility of developing a probiotic whey-based beverage containing CRG pulp. Furthermore, this is the first report about CRG beverages as a probiotic vector. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This research focuses on the evaluation of the properties of a probiotic beverage, with a promissory industrial application using whey, as a dairy industry byproduct, combined with the pulp of the highly nutritious and subutilized Costa Rican guava (CRG) fruit.

Abstract
Halophytic grasses have been recently targeted as possible sources of nutraceutical and medicinal compounds. Nonetheless, few studies have been conducted on the phytochemistry and biological activities of metabolites produced by these plants. Among these, Spartina maritima (Curtis) Fernald, Spartina patens (Aiton.) Muhl., and Puccinellia maritima (Hudson) Parl. are three halophytic grasses whose chemical composition and bioactivities are unknown. The present work broadens the knowledge on the polyphenolic and chlorophyll composition of these species identifying for the first time hydroxycinnamic acids and their derivatives, flavones, flavonols, lignans, as well as chlorophylls and xantophylls. The extracts were particularly rich in caffeic and ferulic acids as well as in trihydroxymethoxyflavone, apigenin and tricin derivatives. Interestingly, several of the identified compounds are relevant from a medicinal and nutraceutical point of view putting in evidence the potential of these species. Thus, the antioxidant, anti-acetylcholinesterase, antibacterial, and antifungal activities of the polyphenolic extracts were assessed as well as the photophysical properties of the chlorophyll-rich extracts. The results, herein presented for the first time, reinforce the nutritional and the medicinal potential of these halophytic grasses.

Abstract
The chapter provides an overview of cardiovascular disease, a major cause of mortality worldwide. It relates economic and social impacts to the disease, especially in developing countries. One of the approaches to addressing this challenge is increasing awareness within society, through implementation of education programs. It is important for society to understand the types and roles of the risk factors leading to cardiovascular disease. Emphasis is on the role of functional food and nutraceuticals as dietary sources that could prevent development of cardiovascular disease. The chapter highlights roles of nutraceuticals and functional food sources from medical plants, seeds, berries, and tropical fruits in lowering risk factors. Key findings from trials conducted in Asia, China, Europe, and America provide supporting evidence for the importance of functional food to health, and its potential for modifying the level of risk factors related to cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Food and feed laboratories share several similarities when facing the implementation of liquid-chromatographic analysis. Using the experience acquired over the years, through application chemistry in food and feed research, selected analytes of relevance for both areas were discussed. This review focused on the common obstacles and peculiarities that each analyte offers (during the sample treatment or the chromatographic separation) throughout the implementation of said methods. A brief description of the techniques which we considered to be more pertinent, commonly used to assay such analytes is provided, including approaches using commonly available detectors (especially in starter labs) as well as mass detection. This manuscript consists of three sections: feed analysis (as the start of the food chain); food destined for human consumption determinations (the end of the food chain); and finally, assays shared by either matrices or laboratories. Analytes discussed consist of both those considered undesirable substances, contaminants, additives, and those related to nutritional quality. Our review is comprised of the examination of polyphenols, capsaicinoids, theobromine and caffeine, cholesterol, mycotoxins, antibiotics, amino acids, triphenylmethane dyes, nitrates/nitrites, ethanol soluble carbohydrates/sugars, organic acids, carotenoids, hydro and liposoluble vitamins. All analytes are currently assayed in our laboratories.

Abstract
Psidium guajava fruit is a subtropical fruit, functional food and traditional medicine for the adjuvant treatment of diabetes mellitus in China. To investigate the active components responsible for its health benefits, a novel heteropolysaccharide GP70-3 was purified by water extraction, ethanol precipitation and column chromatography. Structural characterization of GP70-3 was elucidated for the first time by monosaccharide composition assay, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), methylation analysis, gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). The data revealed that GP70-3 contained a backbone of 1→3,6)-linked β-d-Galp, 1→5)-linked α-l-Araf, 1→6)-linked β-d-Galp and 1→3)-linked β-d-Galp, branched with 1→2,3,5)-linked α-l-Araf, 1→3)-linked α-l-Araf, 1→3)-linked α-l-Rhap, 1→3)-linked β-d-GlcpA, 1→3)-linked β-d-GalpA and terminated with →1)-linked β-d-Galp. Advanced structure studies showed GP70-3 consisted of irregular flakes with rounded-spherical pores. Moreover, GP70-3 exhibited outstanding α-glucosidase inhibitory activity in vitro, with an IC50 value of 2.539 ± 0.144 μM, which was 1867 times higher than that of the positive control acarbose (IC50 value of 4.744 ± 0.026 mM). Therefore, consumption of guava polysaccharides may be beneficial as an α-glucosidase inhibitor for reducing the postprandial blood glucose level and treating type II diabetes.

Abstract
The balance between synthesis and degradation is crucial to maintain cellular homeostasis and different mechanisms are known to keep this balance. In this review, we will provide a short overview on autophagy as an intracellular homeostatic degradative machinery. We will also describe the involvement of downregulation of autophagy in numerous diseases including neurodegenerative diseases, cancer, aging, metabolic disorders, and other infectious diseases. Therefore, modulation of autophagic processes can represent a promising way of intervention in different diseases including neurodegeneration and cancer. Trehalose, also known as mycose, is a natural disaccharide found extensively but not abundantly among several organisms. It is described that trehalose can work as an important autophagy modulator and can be proficiently used in the control several diseases in which autophagy plays an important role. On these bases, we describe here the role of trehalose as an innovative drug in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and other illnesses opening a new scenario of intervention in conditions difficult to be treated.

Abstract
We analyzed guava fruits (Psidium guajava L. cv. Red Suprema) from Cuba to determine their chemical composition, total antioxidant capacity, as well as their protective effect against oxidative damage using an in vitro model of human dermal fibroblasts. The guava fruit is a natural source of bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, vitamin C, folates and beta carotenes with proven health benefits. Human dermal fibroblasts were pre-incubated with different concentrations of guava crude extract and then subjected to oxidative stress using the AAPH stressor. The number of apoptotic and dead cells, as well as the markers of oxidative damage such as lipid and protein oxidation significantly decreased when cells were pre-incubated with guava crude extract and then exposed to the stressor. The activity of antioxidant enzymes also improved when cells were pre-incubated with guava crude extract in comparison to cells subjected to stress without prior pre-incubation with the guava extract. The results obtained in this study highlight the health benefits of guava regarding oxidative stress, proving it to be an important source of bioactive compounds associated with important biological properties.

Abstract
Morin is a flavonoid contained in guava that is known to reduce hyperglycemia in diabetes. Insulin secretion has been demonstrated to increase following the administration of morin. The present study is designed to investigate the potential mechanism(s) of morin-induced insulin secretion in the MIN6 cell line. First, we identified that morin induced a dose-dependent increase in insulin secretion and intracellular calcium content in MIN6 cells. Morin potentiated glucose-stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS). Additionally, we used siRNA for the ablation of imidazoline receptor protein (NISCH) expression in MIN6 cells. Interestingly, the effects of increased insulin secretion by morin and canavanine were markedly reduced in Si-NISCH cells. Moreover, we used KU14R to block imidazoline I3 receptor (I-3R) that is known to enhance insulin release from the pancreatic β-cells. Without influence on the basal insulin secretion, KU14R dose-dependently inhibited the increased insulin secretion induced by morin or efaroxan in MIN6 cells. Additionally, effects of increased insulin secretion by morin or efaroxan were reduced by diazoxide at the dose sufficient to open KATP channels and attenuated by nifedipine at the dose used to inhibit L-type calcium channels. Otherwise, phospholipase C (PLC) is introduced to couple with imidazoline receptor (I-R). The PLC inhibitor dose-dependently inhibited the effects of morin in MIN6 cells. Similar blockade was also observed in protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor-treated cells. Taken together, we found that morin increases insulin secretion via the activation of I-R in pancreatic cells. Therefore, morin would be useful to develop in the research and treatment of diabetic disorders.

Abstract
The effect of two different water sources (treated waste water and lake water) used for irrigation on the soil geochemical properties and the fruit quality parameters of the Lohan guava were studied. The fruits' physical attributes, physicochemical attributes, nutritional attributes, mineral content as well as consumers' acceptance were evaluated. The properties of the different water sources and their effect, on both the soil and the quality of the fruits, were evaluated. Analysis of the irrigation water revealed that treated waste water was of acceptable quality with reference to irrigation water quality guidelines, while the lake water used for irrigation fell short in several aspects. The different water sources used for irrigation in the farms affected the soil geochemical properties significantly. The quality of guavas harvested from the farms that were irrigated with different water sources was significantly different. Irrigation water qualities were observed to have positive effects on the quality of the fruits and consumers' acceptance as observed from the results of quality analysis and the consumers' acceptance test.

Abstract
Psidium is a genus of tropical bushes belonging to the Myrtaceae family distributed in Central and South America. The polar extract of Psidium friedrichsthalianum Nied. was partitioned with ethyl ether, ethyl acetate, and n-butanol, and the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were measured by Folin-Ciocalteu and ABTS assays, respectively. The ethyl acetate fraction exhibited both the highest phenolic content and antioxidant activity. Due to the complexity of this fraction, an analytical method for the comprehensive profiling of phenolic compounds was done by UPLC-ESI/QqQ in MRM (multiple reaction monitoring) mode. In this targeted analysis, 22 phenolic compounds were identified, among which several hydroxybenzoic, phenylacetic, and hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives were found. This is the first time that (+)-catechin, procyanidin B1, procyanidin B2, and (−)-epicatechin have been reported as constituents of sour guava. A fractionation by exclusion size, C18-column chromatography, and preparative RRLC (rapid resolution liquid chromatography) allowed us to confirm the presence of ellagic acid and isomeric procyanidins B, well-known bioactive compounds. The content of phenolic compounds in this fruit shows its potential for the development of functional foods.

Abstract
Pink guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a highly consumed fruit in tropical countries. Despite of interesting research on health effects of this fruit, investigations into the profile of secondary plant metabolites are scarce. In this study, the phenolic compounds in the peel and flesh of pink guava were characterized by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with diode array and mass spectrometric detection. Sixty phenolic compounds were characterized by MS2 and classified as ellagitannins, flavones, flavonols, flavanols, proanthocyanidins, dihydrochalcones, and anthocyanidins, and non-flavonoids such as phenolic acid derivatives, stilbenes, acetophenones, and benzophenones. Forty-two polyphenols are reported for the first time in both peel and flesh, and twenty-four compounds were detected for the first time in P. guajava, e.g., phlorizin, nothofagin, astringin, chrysin-C-glucoside, valoneic acid bilactone, cinnamoyl-glucoside, and two dimethoxycinnamoyl-hexosides.

Abstract
Copaifera trapezifolia Hayne occurs in the Atlantic Rainforest, which is considered one of the most important and endangered tropical forests on the planet. Although literature works have described many Copaifera spp., their biological activities remain little known. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate (1) the potential of the hydroalcoholic extract from C. trapezifolia leaves (CTE) to act against the causative agents of tooth decay and apical periodontitis and (2) the cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of CTE to ensure that it is safe for subsequent application. Concerning the tested bacteria, the MIC and the minimum bactericidal concentration of CTE varied between 100 and 400 µg ml-1. The time-kill assay conducted at a CTE concentration of 100 µg ml-1 evidenced bactericidal activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis (ATCC 33277) and Peptostreptococcus micros (clinical isolate) within 72 h. CTE at 200 µg ml-1 inhibited Porphyromonas gingivalis and Peptostreptococcus micros biofilm formation by at least 50 %. A combination of CTE with chlorhexidine dichlorohydrate did not prompt any synergistic effects. The colony-forming assay conducted on V79 cells showed that CTE was cytotoxic at concentrations above 156 µg ml-1. CTE exerted mutagenic effect on V79 cells, but the micronucleus test conducted on Swiss mice and the Ames test did not reveal any mutagenicity. Therefore, the use of standardized and safe extracts could be an important strategy to develop novel oral care products with antibacterial action. These extracts could also serve as a source of compounds for the discovery of new promising biomolecules.

Abstract
The optimization of pink guava was executed using central composite face-centred design to optimize the spray drying parameters of inlet temperature, maltodextrin concentration (MDC) and feed flow (FF). The experimental results were significantly (p<0.01) fitted into second-order polynomial models to describe and predict the response quality in terms of the final moisture, particle size and lycopene with R 2 of 0.9749, 0.9616, and 0.9505, respectively. The final moisture content significantly (p<0.01) decreased with increasing inlet temperature and MDC, whereas the particle size increased. In contrast, the lycopene content significantly (p<0.01) decreased with the higher temperature and increased with increasing MDC. However, according to multiple response optimization, the optimum conditions of 150°C inlet temperature, 17.12% (w/v) MDC and 350 mL/h FF-predicted 3.10% moisture content, 11.23 μm particle size and 58.71 mg/100 g lycopene content. The experimental observation satisfied the predicted model within the acceptable range of the responses.

Abstract
We explored whether the combination of anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory guava (Psidium guajava) and trehalose treatment protects the kidney and pancreas against Type II diabetes (T2DM)-induced injury in rats. We measured the active component of guava juice by HPLC analysis. T2DM was induced in Wistar rats by intraperitoneal administration of nicotinamide and streptozotocin and combination with high fructose diets for 8 weeks. The rats fed with different dosages of guava juice in combination with or without trehalose for 4 weeks were evaluated the parameters including OGTT, plasma insulin, HbA1c, HOMA-IR (insulin resistance) and HOMA-β (β cell function and insulin secretion). We measured oxidative and inflammatory degrees by immunohistochemistry stain, fluorescent stain, and western blot and serum and kidney reactive oxygen species (ROS) by a chemiluminescence analyzer. High content of quercetin in the guava juice scavenged H2O2 and HOCl, whereas trehalose selectively reduced H2O2, not HOCl. T2DM affected the levels in OGTT, plasma insulin, HbA1c, HOMA-IR and HOMA-β, whereas these T2DM-altered parameters, except HbA1c, were significantly improved by guava and trehalose treatment. The levels of T2DM-enhanced renal ROS, 4-hydroxynonenal, caspase-3/apoptosis, LC3-B/autophagy and IL-1β/pyroptosis were significantly decreased by guava juice and trehalose. The combination with trehalose and guava juice protects the pancreas and kidney against T2DM-induced injury.

Abstract
The "araçá-pera" (Psidium acutangulum DC) is an exotic guava consumed by the Brazilian Amazon population. This paper describes 22 compounds from this fruit by UHPLC-HRMS and NMR methods, being one disaccharide, five monosaccharides, two organic acids, one trihydroxycinnamic acid glucopyranosyl, one tannine digalloyl glucopyranosyl, five triterpenoid acids, and six fatty acids. It also quantifies the level of ascorbic acid (AA) by HPLC-MS (74.32±1.23mg/100g of fresh fruit), and defines the chemical antioxidant activities by DPPH and ABTS+ assays (24.96±0.75, 90.57±0.63mg of vitamin C/100g fresh fruit, respectively), and a cell-based assays (76-100%). These results have shown that this exotic guava can be consumed as a nutraceutical ingredient, as well as be used in the production of functional foods in the Amazonian diet to prevent chronic and oxidative diseases.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common chronic illnesses in the world. The disease encompasses emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and small airway obstruction and can be caused by environmental exposures, primarily cigarette smoking. Since only a small subset of smokers develop COPD, it is believed that host factors interact with the environment to increase the propensity to develop disease. The major pathogenic factors causing disease include infection and inflammation, protease and antiprotease imbalance, and oxidative stress overwhelming antioxidant defenses. In this review, we will discuss the major environmental and host sources for oxidative stress; discuss how oxidative stress regulates chronic bronchitis; review the latest information on genetic predisposition to COPD, specifically focusing on oxidant/antioxidant imbalance; and review future antioxidant therapeutic options for COPD. The complexity of COPD will necessitate a multi-target therapeutic approach. It is likely that antioxidant supplementation and dietary antioxidants will have a place in these future combination therapies.
