Abstract
Small peptides in plants are typically characterized as being shorter than 120 amino acids, with their biologically active variants comprising fewer than 20 amino acids. These peptides are instrumental in regulating plant growth, development, and physiological processes, even at minimal concentrations. They play a critical role in long-distance signal transduction within plants and act as primary responders to a range of stress conditions, including salinity, alkalinity, drought, high temperatures, and cold. This review highlights the crucial roles of various small peptides in plant growth and development, plant resistance to abiotic stress, and their involvement in long-distance transport. Furthermore, it elaborates their roles in the regulation of plant hormone biosynthesis. Special emphasis is given to the functions and mechanisms of small peptides in plants responding to abiotic stress conditions, aiming to provide valuable insights for researchers working on the comprehensive study and practical application of small peptides.

Abstract
Phytosulfokine (PSK), a plant peptide hormone with a wide range of biological functions, is recognized by its receptor PHYTOSULFOKINE RECEPTOR 1 (PSKR1). Previous studies have reported that PSK plays important roles in plant growth, development, and stress responses. However, the involvement of PSK in fruit development and quality formation remains largely unknown. Here, using tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) as a research model, we show that exogenous application of PSK promotes the initiation of fruit ripening and quality formation, while these processes are delayed in pskr1 mutant fruits. Transcriptomic profiling revealed that molecular events and metabolic pathways associated with fruit ripening and quality formation are affected in pskr1 mutant lines and transcription factors are involved in PSKR1-mediated ripening. Yeast screening further identified that DEHYDRATION-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT BINDING PROTEIN 2F (DREB2F) interacts with PSKR1. Silencing of DREB2F delayed the initiation of fruit ripening and inhibited the promoting effect of PSK on fruit ripening. Moreover, the interaction between PSKR1 and DREB2F led to phosphorylation of DREB2F. PSK improved the efficiency of DREB2F phosphorylation by PSKR1 at the tyrosine-30 site, and the phosphorylation of this site increased the transcription level of potential target genes related to the ripening process and functioned in promoting fruit ripening and quality formation. These findings shed light on the involvement of PSK and its downstream signaling molecule DREB2F in controlling climacteric fruit ripening, offering insights into the regulatory mechanisms governing ripening processes in fleshy fruits.

Abstract
Phytosulfokine-α (PSK-α) is a disulfated pentapeptide (YIYTQ) acting as an intercellular signal peptide and growth factor. It was originally isolated from conditioned medium of asparagus mesophyll cell cultures in 1996 and later characterized as a hormone-like signal molecule with important roles in numerous processes of in vivo plant growth and development. It is currently becoming a valuable mitogenic factor in plant breeding and biotechnology due to its stimulatory effect on in vitro cell elongation, proliferation and differentiation. The focus of our work was to review current knowledge about the roles of PSK-α in plant biotechnology and to evaluate its influence on the regeneration of protoplasts of four Brassica oleracea cultivars (two cauliflower and two cabbage) cultured under two distinctive protocols and with different protoplast densities. Protoplast regeneration was studied due to its high value for plant genome editing, which is generally limited by the inefficient regeneration of treated protoplasts of numerous important plant genotypes. Our hypothesis was that the stress related to PEG-mediated protoplast transformation and the following decrease in viable protoplast density in culture could be alleviated by the addition of PSK-α to the culture medium. We therefore tested whether PSK-α could increase cell division at the early stages of culture (5 and 15 days after protoplast isolation) and stimulate the formation of microcallus colonies up to the 30st day of culture and to evaluate its influence on callus organogenesis leading to shoot regeneration. The PSK-α showed a strong stimulatory effect on untransformed protoplast regeneration already during the first days of culture, accelerating cell division up to 5.3-fold and the formation of multicellular microcallus colonies up to 37.0-fold. The beneficial influence was retained at later stages of regeneration, when PSK improved shoot organogenesis even if it was present only during the first 10 days of culture. The highest numbers of shoots, however, were regenerated when PSK was present during the first days of culture and later in solid shoot regeneration medium. Finally, the addition of PSK-α to PEG-transformed protoplasts significantly enhanced their division rate and the formation of microcallus colonies in selection media, up to 44.0-fold.

Abstract
Postharvest loquat fruit is susceptible to chilling injury (CI) under cold stress. In this study, the effects of phytosulfokine α (PSKα) on sugar, proline, polyamine and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) metabolisms in loquat fruit during cold storage were investigated. The results showed that PSKα treatment significantly increased PSKα content along with up-regulating EjPSK3 and EjPSK6 expressions, and inhibited the increases of internal browning index, electrolyte leakage and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of loquat fruit. Besides, PSKα treatment maintained higher reducing sugar, proline, polyamines, and GABA contents in loquat fruit via activating biosynthesis pathway and suppressing catabolism pathway. More importantly, the results of correlation analysis indicated that PSKα content displayed positive correlations with reducing sugar, proline, polyamines and GABA contents. These findings suggested that the improved chilling tolerance in PSKα-treated loquat fruit was due to enhancing reducing sugar, proline, polyamines, and GABA contents, which might be modulated by endogenous PSKα signaling.

Abstract
Loquat fruits are among the most popular Chinese fruits because of their unique taste and aroma. The quality profiles of these fruits during 18 days of shelf-life at 20 °C were elucidated by headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS), E-nose, and E-tongue. During shelf-life period, the properties and variations of 43 (20 aldehydes, 7 esters, 6 ketones, 1 alcohol, and 1 furan) volatile flavored compounds were determined by GC-IMS, which showed that the contents of methyl 3-methyl butanoate, ethyl acetate, and dimethyl ketone gradually decrease with prolonged shelf-life time, while (E)-2-heptenal, heptanal, (E)-2-pentenal, 1-penten-3-one 3-pentanone and 2-pentylfuran increase. The PCA based on the signal intensity of GC-IMS and E-nose, revealed that loquat fruits are well distinguished at different shelf-life times. The taste profile alternates as the storage time increases, along with higher pH, and lower amounts of total soluble solids, vitamin C, and total phenolics. The visual plots of GC-IMS, E-nose, and E-tongue had good consistency, and they characterized the aroma characteristics of loquat fruits well during different shelf-life periods. The findings of this research provide a useful understanding of the flavors of loquat fruits during their prolonged shelf-life, and a potential research basis for advancements in the loquat industry.

Abstract
Kiwifruit fruit stored at low temperatures are susceptible to chilling injury, leading to rapid softening, which therefore affects storage and marketing. The effect of 150 nM mL-1 of exogenous phytosulfokine α (PSKα) on reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism, Ca2+ signaling, and signal-transducing MAPK in kiwifruit, stored at 0 °C for 60 days, was investigated. The results demonstrated that PSKα treatment effectively alleviated chilling injury in kiwifruit, with a 15% reduction in damage compared to the control on day 60. In addition, PSKα enhanced the activities and gene expression levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), glutathione reductase (GR), Ca2+-ATPase, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). In contrast, the activities and gene expression levels of NADPH oxidase (NOX) were inhibited, leading to a lower accumulation of O2- and H2O2, which were 47.2% and 42.2% lower than those in the control at the end of storage, respectively. Furthermore, PSKα treatment enhanced the calmodulin (CaM) content of kiwifruit, which was 1.41 times that of the control on day 50. These results indicate that PSKα can mitigate chilling injury and softening of kiwifruit by inhibiting the accumulation of ROS, increasing antioxidant capacity by inducing antioxidant enzymes, activating Ca2+ signaling, and responding to MAPK protein kinase. The present results provide evidence that exogenous PSKα may be taken for a hopeful treatment in alleviating chilling injury and maintaining the quality of kiwifruit.

Abstract
Polysaccharide films containing protein additives have good application prospects in agriculture and food field. However, interfacial incompatibility between hydrophobic proteins and hydrophilic polymers remains a major technical challenge. In this work, the interfacial compatibility between hydrophobic zein and hydrophilic chitosan (CS) is improved by the chemical crosslinking between zinc ions of curcumin-loaded zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (Cur-ZIF-8) with CS and zein. With the improvement of interface compatibility, the results show that the elongation at break and O2 barrier property of synthesized Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein are 9.2 and 1.5 times higher than CS/Zein, respectively. And the Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein exhibits superior antibacterial and antioxidant properties as well. Importantly, Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein can also be used as an intelligent-responsive release platform for curcumin. As a result, Cur-ZIF-8/CS/Zein can keep the freshness and appearance of litchi at least 8 days longer than that of CS/Zein. Therefore, this study provides a novel method to improve the interfacial compatibility between hydrophobic proteins and hydrophilic polymers, and is expected to expand the application of protein/polymer composites in agriculture and food field.

Abstract
Due to the global use of cold chain, the development of postharvest technology to reduce chilling injury (CI) in postharvest fruits and vegetables during storage and transport is needed urgently. Considerable evidence shows that maintaining intracellular adenosine triphosphate (iATP) in harvested fruits and vegetables is beneficial to inhibiting CI occurrence. Extracellular ATP (eATP) is a damage-associated signal molecule and plays an important role in CI of postharvest fruits and vegetables through its receptor and subsequent signal transduction under low-temperature stress. The development of new aptasensors for the simultaneous determination of eATP level allows for better understanding of the roles of eATP in a myriad of responses mediated by low-temperature stress in relation to the chilling tolerance of postharvest fruits and vegetables. The multiple biological functions of eATP and its receptors in postharvest fruits and vegetables were attributed to interactions with reactive oxygen species (ROS) and nitric oxide (NO) in coordination with phytohormones and other signaling molecules via downstream physiological activities. The complicated interconnection among eATP in relation to its receptors, eATP/iATP homeostasis, ROS, NO, and heat shock proteins triggered by eATP recognition has been emphasized. This paper reviews recent advances in the beneficial effects of energy handling, outlines the production and homeostasis of eATP, discusses the possible mechanism of eATP and its receptors in chilling tolerance, and provides future research directions for CI in postharvest fruits and vegetables during low-temperature storage.

Abstract
Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl. ) is one of the most economically important evergreen fruit crops in China, while it often suffered the injury of cold stress in winter and earlier spring, and the annual yield loss of loquat fruits caused by cold or freezing stress was immeasurable. However, knowledge about the physiological response and molecular mechanism under cold stress is still limited. To investigate the potential regulation mechanism pre- and post-cold stress in loquat and the changes in physiological indicators, a comparative transcriptome analysis was performed against a cold-resistant cv. "Huoju" and a cold-sensitive cv. "Ninghaibai". The results of physiological indicators related to cold resistance indicated that rachis was most sensitive to cold stress and was considered as the representative organ to directly evaluate cold resistance of loquat based on subordinate function analysis. Here, we compared the transcriptome profiles of rachis pre- and under cold stress in "Huoju" and "Ninghaibai". A total of 4,347 and 3,513 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were detected in "Ninghaibai" and "Huoju", among which 223 and 166 were newly identified genes, respectively, most of them were functionally enriched in plant hormone signal transduction (Huoju: 142; Ninghaibai: 200), and there were higher plant hormone content and related DEG expression levels in "Huoju" than that of "Ninghaibai". Moreover, a total of 3,309 differentially expressed transcription factors (DETFs) were identified, and some DEGs and DETFs were screened to be subjected to co-expression network analysis based on the gene expression profile data. Some candidate DEGs, including UDP-glycosyltransferase (UGT), glycosyltransferase (GT), sugar phosphate/phosphate translocator (SPT), sugar transport protein (STP), proline-rich receptor-like protein kinase (PERK), and peroxidise (POD), were significantly affected by cold stress, and the expression level of these genes obtained from real-time quantitative RT-PCR was consistent with the pattern of transcriptome profile, which suggested that these genes might play the vital roles in cold resistance of loquat. Our results provide an invaluable resource for the identification of specific genes and TFs and help to clarify gene transcription during the cold stress response of loquat.

Abstract
Freezing is a way to preserve the quality of fruit for a long time. Nanguo pear stored at low temperature is prone to browning and lignification. In this study, freeze-thaw cycles were used to simulate the temperature fluctuation in the process, storage and transportation. The texture properties were taken as the research focus to analyze the lignification phenomenon of Nanguo pear under freeze-thaw cycles. The results showed that freeze-thaw treatment significantly reduced the firmness and propectin content of Nanguo pear, increased the content of stone cells in the fruit, but also destroyed the size of stone cells in the fruit. However, with the increase of freezing-thawing cycles, the content of lignin, stone cell content and PAL activity increased significantly, while the content of chlorogenic acid increased first and then decreased. These results are helpful to further understand the correlation between texture change with fruit firmness and formation mechanism of stone cells during freeze-thaw cycles of Nanguo pear. Abstract
The involvement of PpCBF6 in phytosulfokine α (PSKα)-ameliorated chilling injury (CI) by suppressing the expression of lipoxygenase 5 (LOX5) in peach fruit was revealed. The peaches were immersed in distilled water and PSKα solution. PSKα application inhibited the progression of CI index and weight loss, and the reduction of firmness and total soluble solids content in peaches. The endogenous PSKα accumulation and gene expression of PSK receptor 1 (PSKR1) and PSKR2 were up regulated by PSKα application. The superoxide anion (O2 -) production rate, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production and reactive oxygen species (ROS) content decreased by PSKα application. Furthermore, PSKα application reduced the gene expression of 12 PpLOXs and LOX activity. The gene expression of 6 PpCBFs was enhanced by PSKα application. Importantly, after PSKα application, among 12 PpLOXs, the decrease in gene expression of PpLOX5 was the lowest, and among 6 PpCBFs, the increase in gene expression of PpCBF6 was the highest. Further results suggested that PpCBF6 bound to the C-repeat/dehydration responsive element (CRT/DRE) motif in PpLOX5 promoter, and repressed its transcription. Thus, PpCBF6 was involved in the PSKα-retarded CI by inhibiting the expression of PpLOX5 in peaches.

Abstract
Spoilage of food has aggravated the issue of food shortage worldwide. Here, we report a strategy for ultrafast hydrogel film forming within 10 s on fruit surfaces with good self-matching, washable removal and preservative property. This carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS)/tannic acid (TA) hydrogel film (CTHF) is fabricated by bio-material of CMCS and TA via in-situ rapidly crosslinking with high-density hydrogen bonds. Simply blending TA and CMCS solution at room temperature can form CTHF with different roughness (Ra: ranges from 123 to 1.55 nm) on different fruit surfaces, so as to perfectly match the hydrogel protective layer of pericarp. The CTHF slows down fruit decay by its outstanding antioxidant and antibacterial activity. It is soluble and easily removed (within 3-5 min) by washing without environmental pollution and food safety issues. As natural polymer, CTHF shows high promise as sustainable substitutes for conventional plastics packing because of its non-toxic, edible, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly.

Abstract
During postharvest life, broccoli suffers from floret yellowing confining its economic and nutritional value. The objective of the present study was to explore the mechanisms employed by phytosulfokine α (PSKα) at 150 nM for delaying floret yellowing in broccoli during storage at 4°C for 28 days. Our results showed that the higher endogenous accumulation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) resulting from the higher gene expression and activities of l-cysteine desulfhydrase (LCD) and d-cysteine desulfhydrase (DCD) in broccoli floret treated with 150 nM PSKα may serve as an endogenous signaling molecule for delaying senescence. Moreover, the suppressed ethylene biosynthesis in broccoli floret treated with 150 nM PSKα might be ascribed to lower gene expression and activities of ACC synthase (ACS) and ACC oxidase (ACO). Furthermore, lower gene expression and activities of Mg2+ dechelatase (MDC), pheophytinase (PPH), and pheophorbide a oxygenase (PaO) might be the reasons for the higher accumulation of chlorophyll in broccoli floret treated with 150 nM PSKα. Based on our findings, exogenous PSKα application could be employed as signaling bioactive hormone for retarding floret yellowing of broccoli during storage at 4°C for 28 days.

Abstract
The yellowing of florets limits the economic and nutritional value of broccoli during postharvest. We investigated mechanisms of action of 150 nM phytosulfokine α (PSKα) for delaying florets yellowing in broccoli during cold storage. Our results showed that SUMO E3 ligase (SIZ1) gene expression was higher in florets treated with PSKα, which may prevent endogenous H2O2 accumulation, resulting from the higher activity of superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, and glutathione reductase. Besides, higher expression of methionine sulfoxide reductase and cysteine peroxiredoxin genes, concomitant with higher expression of heat shock proteins 70/90 genes, may arise from higherexpression of SIZ1 gene. Lower expression and activity of phospholipase D and lipoxygenase may be liable for membrane integrity protection featured by lower malondialdehyde accumulation in florets treated with PSKα. Additionally,florets treated with PSKα exhibited higher endogenous cytokinin accumulation which may arise from higher expression of isopentenyl transferase gene, concomitant with lower expression of cytokinin oxidase gene.

Abstract
Fresh loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) fruits easily lose their marketability because of fungal spoilage, browning, and weight loss after harvest. The use of essential oils as postharvest treatment is a talented alternative to fungicides mainly because of their ability to reduce respiration and transpiration of the fresh fruits during storage. However, the postharvest studies with the volatiles of essential oils are limited. The present study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of volatile essential oils of myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) leaves for preserving the postharvest storability of loquat fruits. Test fruits of the present study were exposed to 5 different treatments, which are (i) water vapor (2 min), (ii) myrtle leaves (3% w/w), (iii) myrtle leaf vapor (2 min), (iv) myrtle leaf vapor (10 min), and (v) untreated control. A total of 30 compounds were isolated from the essential oil, and the three highest amounts of compounds were determined as eucalyptol (39.38%), α-pinene (24.98%), and linalool (8.18%). Exposure to myrtle leaves (3% w/w) and myrtle leaf vapor (2 min) was also noted to provide higher efficacy for reducing the weight loss, decay incidence, and browning index.

Abstract
In this study, third-generation full-length (FL) transcriptome sequencing was performed of loquat using single-molecule real-time(SMRT) sequencing from the pooled cDNA of embryos of young loquat fruit under different low temperatures (three biological replicates for treatments of 1°C, -1°C, and -3°C, for 12 h or 24 h) and the control group(three biological replicates for treatments of room temperature), Illumina sequencing was used to correct FL transcriptome sequences. A total of 3 PacBio Iso-Seq libraries (1–2 kb, 2–3 kb and 3–6 kb) and 21 Illumina transcriptome libraries were constructed, a total of 13.41 Gb of clean reads were generated, which included 215,636 reads of insert (ROIs) and 121,654 FL, non-chimaric (FLNC) reads. Transcript clustering analysis of the FLNC reads revealed 76,586 consensus isoforms, and a total of 12,520 high-quality transcript sequences corrected with non-FL sequences were used for subsequent analysis. After the redundant reads were removed, 38,435 transcripts were obtained. A total of 27,905 coding DNA sequences (CDSs) were identified, and 407 long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) were ultimately predicted. Additionally, 24,832 simple sequence repeats (SSRs) were identified, and a total of 1,295 alternative splicing (AS) events were predicted. Furthermore, 37,993 transcripts were annotated in eight functional databases. This is the first study to perform SMRT sequencing of the FL transcriptome of loquat. The obtained transcriptomic data are conducive for further exploration of the mechanism of loquat freezing injury and thus serve as an important theoretical basis for generating new loquat material and for identifying new ways to improve loquat cold resistance.

Abstract
Herein, we employed exogenous phytosulfokine α (PSKα) for delaying senescence and lessening decay in strawberry fruits during storage at 4 °C for 18 days. Our results showed that the strawberry fruits treated with 150 nM PSKα exhibited lower expression of poly-ADP-ribose polymerase 1 (PARP1) gene, leading to a higher intracellular NAD+ availability, beneficial for a sufficient provision of intracellular NADP+ with the activity of NAD kinase (NADK). Moreover, higher activities of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH), and methylenetetrahydrofolate dehydrogenase (MTHFD) may be the reason for the sufficient intracellular availability of NADPH in strawberry fruits treated with 150 nM PSKα. In addition, strawberry fruits treated with 150 nM PSKα exhibited a sufficient availability of ATP resulted from higher activities of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO). Therefore, our results indicate that exogenous PSKα could be beneficial for delaying senescence and reducing decay in strawberry fruits during cold storage.

Abstract
In this study, we tested the exogenous application of phytosulfokine α (PSKα) for delaying the yellowing of broccoli florets during cold storage. Our results showed that the lower yellowing in broccoli florets treated with 150 nM PSKα was probably due to the higher endogenous accumulation of PSKα, leading to the endogenous accumulation of guanosine 3', 5'-cyclic monophosphate (cGMP). Besides, broccoli florets treated with 150 nM PSKα exhibited a higher accumulation of phenols and flavonoids by triggering gene expression and activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) and chalcone synthase (CHS). Moreover, the higher expression of L-galactotno-1,4-lactone dehydrogenase (GLDH) gene and the lower expression of ascorbic acid oxidase (AAO) gene in broccoli florets treated with 150 nM PSKα may be the reasons for the higher accumulation of ascorbic acid. In conclusion, the exogenous application of PSKα is a promising strategy in delaying the yellowing and preserving the nutritional quality of broccoli florets during cold storage.

Abstract
Loquat fruits are known to have high nutritional contents and phytochemicals which are attributed with its health benefits. However, its storage life is reported to be very limited which negatively affect its marketability and consumption. Present study aimed to investigate the influence of seven different bio-materials or the combination of bio-materials on the postharvest life and storage quality of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica Lindl.) fruits var. 'Morphitiki'. The tested bio-materials or the combinations of current works was (1) OFI-Oputia ficus-indica extract; (2) OFI + Ns-Oputia ficus-indica extract + Nigella sativa oil; (3) OFI + PEx-Oputia ficus-indica extract + propolis extract; (4) OFI + C-Oputia ficus-indica extract + cinnamon oil; (5) Ns-Nigella sativa oil; (6) PEx-propolis extract and (7) CcEx-Chrysanthemum coronarium flower extract. As expected, weight loss showed an increasing tendency during storage period. Results showed that all of the tested bio-materials were effective in maintaining the postharvest quality of loquat fruits by reducing weight loss, positively affecting fruit firmness, preventing fruit browning and reducing decay incidence. Results suggested that loquat fruits can be stored with an acceptable quality for up to 35 days at 4 ± 1 °C and 95% relative humidity conditions, when treated with 0.5% Nigella sativa oil (Ns) or 0.5% propolis extract (PEx).

Abstract
In this study, the cold-tolerance capacity of 133 varieties of weedy rice was evaluated based on the comprehensive evaluation index D, with Kongyu 131 used as a cold-tolerant control. A total of 39.8% of the 133 varieties were considered 'strong', indicating that weedy rice populations indeed have relatively strong cold-tolerance capacity as a whole, and the robust cold-tolerant varieties WR29 and WR157 were identified. Regression analysis showed that the metrics including the nitrogen recovery index, superoxide dismutase (SOD) content and malondialdehyde (MDA) content correlated significantly (P < 0.05) with cold tolerance and could be used as indicators of cold tolerance. On the basis of a transcriptome analysis of WR157, a robust cold-tolerant variety identified in this study, a total of 4645 putative DEGs were identified in treated groups compared to the control groups, with 2123 upregulated DEGs and 2522 downregulated DEGs. All upregulated DEGs were enriched on 1388 terms, all downregulated DEGs were enriched on 1566 terms; 911 of the 2123 upregulated DEGs fell into 98 KEGG categories and 1103 of the 2522 downregulated DEGs were in 115 categories. Further analysis showed that GO:0019740 and GO:0006808 are involved in nitrogen utilization; GO:0009269 and GO:0009414 are related to the stress response; and GO:0016491 and GO:0016614 are related to oxidoreductase activity. BACKGROUND: Weedy rice (Oryza) is a related pest species of cultivated rice (Oryza sativa L.) that has strong abiotic stress resistance; however, the comprehensive mechanism governing its cold tolerance is poorly understood. CONCLUSION: Our comprehensive evaluation based on five morphological indices and nine physiological indicators revealed outstanding levels of cold-tolerance capacity among weedy rice varieties from different regions and revealed some terms related to cold tolerance via transcriptome analysis. Our results underscored the reliable evaluation methods for additional cold tolerance studies and revealed several genes related to cold tolerance, which will help researchers breed cultivated rice varieties to increase their cold-tolerance capacity. These traits have the ability to increase seedling survival rate and growth, as well as future yields.

Abstract
Lignification, which occurs in many horticultural fruit and vegetables, brings about undesirable texture and unfavorable consumer preference. However, this problem has rarely been studied. In this work, three pumelo cultivars cvs "Hongroumiyou" (HR), "Bairoumiyou" (BR), and "Huangroumiyou" (HuR) were stored at 25 °C for 90 days, and juice sacs were sampled to explore the lignin accumulation and its relationship to sucrose and energy depletion were investigated. The results displayed that HuR contained lower sucrose content, lower ATP level, but higher lignin content compared to BR and HR during postharvest storage, indicating that the sequence according to storage resistance on the basis of lignin content is as follows: HuR < BR < HR. Furthermore, sucrose degradation attributed to enhanced activities of neutral invertase (NI), soluble acid invertase (S-AI), cell wall-bound invertase (B-AI), and energy deficit on account of declined ATP level, showed significantly negative correlation with lignin accumulation, suggesting that lignin accumulation occurrence could induce sucrose degradation and energy deficit during postharvest storage. Additionally, higher activities of phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD) could accelerate lignin synthesis and resulted in lignin accumulation during postharvest pumelo storage.

Abstract
The expression levels of many genes and the related proteins change and regulate physiological and metabolic processes that help the plant survive harsh environmental conditions under cold stress. Damage due to cold and freezing conditions often causes dynamic loss of loquat fruits in cultivated parts of northern China. To illustrate the mechanism of cold tolerance in the loquat, we combined the transcriptomic analysis with isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantification (iTRAQ) and RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) data from loquat leaves under 4 °C treatment. The results showed 122,081 genes and 1210 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), while only 4582 proteins and 300 differential proteins (DEPs) were identified. Functional annotation and Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis indicated that metabolic pathways and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites were the two most common pathways in transcriptional and translational processes in this study. Comparison analysis of the transcriptomic and proteomic profiles, only 27 of 3620 genes were found to be shared both in DEGs and DEPs. Further validation with Real-Time Quantitative RT-PCR analysis showed that the genes expression of NADP-dependent D-sorbitol-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, anthocyanin synthase and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase were consistent with the pattern of transcriptome profile, which suggested that these three genes might play vital roles in cold tolerance in loquat.
