Abstract
With the development of industrialization and urbanization, heavy metal (HM) pollution has become an urgent problem in many countries. The use of microorganisms to control HM pollution has attracted the attention of many scholars due to its advantages of mild conditions, low process cost, and no secondary pollution. In this context, this review aimed to compile recent advances on the potential of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) as HMs biosorbents. As a food-safe class of probiotic, LAB can not only be used for HM remediation in soil and wastewater, but most importantly, can be used for metal removal in food. The extracellular adsorption and intracellular accumulation are the main mechanisms of HM removal by LAB. Lactic acid (LA) fermentation is also one of the removal mechanisms, especially in the food industry. The pH, temperature, biomass, ion concentration and adsorption time are the essential parameters to be considered during the bioremediation. Although the LAB remediation is feasible in theory and lab-scale experiments, it is limited in practical applications due to its low efficiency. Therefore, the commonly used methods to improve the adsorption efficiency of LAB, including pretreatment and mixed-cultivation, are also summarized in this review. Finally, based on the review of literature, this paper presents the emerging strategies to overcome the low adsorption capacity of LAB. This review proposes the future investigations required for this field, and provides theoretical support for the practical application of LAB bioremediation of HMs.

Abstract
In this study, the feasibility of promoting the lactic acid (LA) fermentation of food waste (FW) with iron tailings (ITs) addition was explored. The best LA yield was 0.91 g LA/g total sugar when 1 % ITs were added into the system. The mechanisms for promoting LA production were acidification alleviation effects and reduction equivalent supply of ITs. Furthermore, the addition of ITs promoted carbohydrate hydrolysis, and the carbohydrates digestibility reached 88.85 % in the 1 % ITs group. The ITs also affected the microbial communities, Lactococcus gradually replaced Streptococcus as the dominant genus, and results suggested that Lactococcus had a positive correlation with LA production and carbohydrate digestibility. Finally, the complex LAB in FW had significant effects on heavy metal removal from ITs, and the removal efficiency Cr, As, Pb, Cd, and Hg can reach 50.84 %, 26.72 %, 59.65 %, 49.75 % and 78.87 % in the 1 % ITs group, respectively.

Abstract
The presence of potentially toxic elements and compounds poses threats to the quality and safety of fruit juices. Among these, Hg(II) is considered as one of the most poisonous heavy metals to human health. Traditional chitosan-based and selenide-based adsorbents face challenges such as poor adsorption capacity and inconvenient separation in juice applications. In this study, we prepared nano‑selenium functionalized chitosan gel beads (nanoSe@CBs) and illustrated the synergistic promotions between chitosan and nanoSe in removing Hg(II) from apple juice. The preparation conditions, adsorption behaviors, and adsorption mechanism of nanoSe@CBs were systematically investigated. The results revealed that the adsorption process was primarily controlled by chemical adsorption. At the 0.1 % dosage, the adsorbent exhibited high uptake, and the maximum adsorption capacity from the Langmuir isotherm model could reach 376.5 mg/g at room temperature. The adsorbent maintained high adsorption efficiency (> 90 %) across a wide range of Hg(II) concentrations (0.01 to 10 mg/L) and was unaffected by organic acids present in apple juice. Additionally, nanoSe@CBs showed negligible effects on the quality of apple juice. Overall, nanoSe@CBs open up possibilities to be used as a safe, low-cost and highly-efficient adsorbent for the removal of Hg(II) from juices and other liquid foods.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an essential element for mammals, but excess intake can have detrimental health consequences. However, Cu is no longer present in the "Limit of Contaminants in Foods" promulgated in 2022. The potential impact of different Cu (II) concentrations on human health remains unclear. In this study, a strain of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), namely, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CICC 23121 (L23121), was selected as a prebiotic indicator strain to indirectly assess the effects of food-limited Cu (II) concentrations (issued by Tolerance limit of copper in foods in 1994) on the functions of intestinal microbes. We used non-target metabolomics, automatic growth curve detector, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) to investigate the effects of Cu (II) on L23121. The study revealed shows that the 50% minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC50) of Cu (II) for most lactic acid bacteria was 4 mg/L. At low Cu (II) concentrations (≤ 4 mg/L), the pentose phosphate pathway and pyrimidine metabolism of the lactic acid bacteria were affected, resulting in a decrease in the content of beneficial secondary metabolites and a significant decrease in the cell activity. As Cu (II) concentrations increase (≥ 6 mg/L), the key amino acid and lipid metabolisms were affected, leading to the inhibition of growth and primary metabolite production of the bacteria. Under high concentration of Cu (II) (6 mg/L), the surface adhesion of the bacteria was distorted and covered with significantly large particles, and the functional groups of the cells were significantly shifted. As a probiotic, the abundance of lactic acid bacteria in the intestine is significantly reduced, which will inevitably seriously damage intestinal homeostasis. Thus, to protect human intestinal microbes' health, it is recommended to limit the concentration of Cu in food to less than 4 mg/L.

Abstract
Carbon nanotubes were used to immobilize Chrysosporium fungus for building an adequate adsorbent to be used as an desirable sorbent for preconcentration and measurement of cadmium ultra-trace levels in various samples. After characterization, the potential of Chrysosporium/carbon nanotubes for the sorption of Cd(II) ions was scrutinized by the aid of central composite design, and comprehensive studies of sorption equilibrium, kinetics and thermodynamic aspects were accomplished. Then, the composite was utilized for preconcentration of ultra-trace cadmium levels, by a mini-column packed with Chrysosporium/carbon nanotubes, before its determination with ICP-OES. The outcomes vouchsafed that (i) Chrysosporium/carbon nanotube has a high tendency for selective and rapid sorption of cadmium ion, at pH 6.1, and (ii) kinetic, equilibrium, and thermodynamic studies showed a high affinity of the Chrysosporium/carbon nanotubes for cadmium ion. Also, the outcomes displayed that cadmium can quantitatively be sorbed at a flow speed lesser than 7.0 mL/min and a 1.0 M HCl solution (3.0 mL) was sufficient to desorbe the analyte. Eventually, preconcentration and measurement of Cd(II) in different foods and waters were successfully accomplished with good accuracy, high precision (RSDs ≤5.65%), and low limit of detection (0.015 μg/L).

Abstract
Very low concentrations of lead (Pb2+) pollution can have far-reaching adverse impacts on human health, due to the cumulative toxicity of Pb2+. Herein, we report a DNAzyme-templated exponential isothermal amplification strategy (termed DNAzymee) for the ultrasensitive detection of Pb2+ pollution and the high-throughput screening of microbial biosorbents to remove Pb2+ pollution. DNAzyme can specifically recognize Pb2+, and this recognition event can be amplified by the subsequent exponential isothermal amplification reaction (EXPAR) and monitored by a G-quadruplex specific dye. The proposed design showed a low limit of detection (95 pM) and could identify Pb2+ pollution in different real samples with high precision. In particular, the proposed assay was used to screen Pb2+ biosorbents, and the results showed that Leuconostoc mesenteroides is a promising microbial biosorbent for removing Pb2+ pollution. Thus, the DNAzymee assay can serve as a platform to monitor lead pollution in the environment and screen efficient biosorbents for the control of lead pollution.

Abstract
Green and environmentally friendly and efficient separation adsorbents have attracted much attention in the treatment of heavy metal ions wastewater. In this study, xanthan gum (XG) was supported by fly ash magnetic beads (FAMB) to prepare adsorbent XG@FAMB. The effects of XG@FAMB dosage, pH value of the solution, adsorption time, and initial Pb (II) and Cu (II) concentration on its adsorption performance for Pb (II) and Cu (II) were investigated. The results show that under the conditions of pH 6, dosage of XG@FAMB 4.0 g/L, adsorption time 120 min, and initial concentration 60 mg/L, the maximum adsorption capacity of XG@FAMB for Pb (II) and Cu (II) was 14.93 mg/g and 14.88 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption process of Pb (II) and Cu (II) by XG@FAMB could be better described by the quasi-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isothermal adsorption model, that is, the adsorption process is monolayer adsorption controlled by chemical action. The adsorption mechanism is that Pb (II) and Cu (II) coordinate with oxygen-containing functional groups hydroxyl and carboxyl on XG@FAMB surface, accompanied by electrostatic adsorption. XG@FAMB has the advantages of environmental protection of XG and easy solid-liquid separation of FAMB, and has a good removal effect on Pb (II) and Cu (II).

Lactic Bacteria with Plant-Growth-Promoting Properties in Potato. MICROBIOLOGY RESEARCH 2023. Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the abilities of three bacteria, Bacillus cereus, Succinovibrio dextrinosolvens, and Lactobacillus acidophilus, to fix nitrogen, solubilize phosphorus, and produce cellulosic and amylolytic enzymes. Then, these bacteria were evaluated in potato plants under field conditions. The bacterium B. cereus showed the ability to synthesize amylase, indole acetic acid (IAA) production of 9.08 μg mL−1, phosphorus solubilization of 14.93 mg P L−1, and nitrogen fixation of 0.7 mg of nitrogen L−1. S. dextrinosolvens showed the ability to synthesize siderophores and amylase, IAA production of 10.25 μg mL−1, phosphorus solubilization of 41.38 mg P L−1, and nitrogen fixation of 0.42 mg N L−1. L. acidophilus showed the ability to synthesize siderophores, IAA production of 7.25 μg mL−1, phosphorus solubilization of 5.58 mg P L−1, and nitrogen fixation of 0.5 mg N L−1. Some plant parameters were increased as shoot dry matter by B. cereus, and the mixture of bacteria increased shoot and root dry matter and increased phosphorus from the root. More studies are needed to deepen the understanding of the potential of these bacteria; however, B. cereus showed great potential to be used as a plant growth promoter in potato crops in the future.

Abstract
An interesting development of biotechnology has linked microbial cell immobilisation with nanoparticles. The main task of our research was to reveal the possible influences of differently electrically charged diamond nanoparticles upon physiological characteristics of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. It was revealed that the adverse impact of these nanoparticles can manifest not only against prokaryotes, but also against eukaryotic yeast cells. However, the obtained results also indicate that it is possible to reduce and, most likely, completely eliminate the dangerous effects of nanoparticles to cells by using special physical approaches. Comparison of non-arylated and arylated nanoparticles showed that in terms of changes in the physiological activity of cells, which are important to biotechnology and biomedicine, the selection of certain nanoparticles (non-arylated or arylated) may be necessary in each specific case, depending on the purpose of their use.

Abstract
Microbial-assisted phytoremediation provides a green approach for remediation of metal contaminated soils. However, the impacts of mono and co-applications of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) on soil biochemical properties and phytoavailability of toxic metals in contaminated mining soils have not yet been sufficiently examined. Consequently, here we studied the effects of Lactobacillus plantarum (P), Lactobacillus acidophilus (A), and Lactobacillus rhamnosus (R) applications alone and in combination on soil enzyme activities and bioavailability and uptake of Cd and Zn by mustard (Brassica juncea) in a smelter-contaminated soil under greenhouse conditions. Among the studied bacteria, P was the most tolerant to Cd-and-Zn contamination. As compared to control, R increased the fresh and dry weight of mustard plants by 53.5% and 63.2%, respectively. Co-application of P + A increased the chlorophyll content by 28.6%, as compared to control. Addition of LAB to soil increased the activity of soil urease, alkaline phosphatase and β-D glucosidase increased by 1.86-fold (P + R), 1.80-fold (R) and 55.16% (P + R), respectively. Application of P + A + R enhanced catalase activity (19.3%) and superoxide dismutase activity (51.2%), while addition of A alone increased peroxidase activity (POD: 15.7%). Addition of P alone and together with A (P + A) enhanced Cd and Zn phytoextraction by mustard shoots up to 51.5% and 52.5%, respectively. We conclude that the single and/or co-application of LAB decreased soil pH, promoted plant growth, antioxidant and enzyme activities, and enhanced the phytoavailability of Cd and Zn in the studied contaminated soil. These findings might be an aid for enhancing the phytoremediation of Cd and Zn using LAB and mustard as a bioenergy crop, which may offer new ideas for field treatment of toxic metals contaminated soils.

Abstract
Acrylamide (AA), furan and furan derivatives, polycyclic aromatic amines (PAHs), monochloropropanediols (MCPDs), glycidol, and their esters are carcinogens that are being formed in starchy and high-protein foodstuffs, including bread, through baking, roasting, steaming, and frying due to the Maillard reaction. The Maillard reaction mechanism has also been described as the source of food processing contaminants. The above-mentioned carcinogens, especially AA and furan compounds, are crucial substances responsible for the aroma of bread. The other groups of bread contaminants are mycotoxins (MTs), toxic metals (TMs), and pesticides. All these contaminants can be differentiated depending on many factors such as source, the concentration of toxicant in the different wheat types, formation mechanism, metabolism in the human body, and hazardous exposure effects to humans. The following paper characterizes the most often occurring contaminants in the bread from each group. The human exposure to bread contaminants and their safe ranges, along with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classification (if available), also have been analyzed.

Abstract
This review (with 126 references) aims at providing an updated overview of the recent developments and innovations of the preparation and application of magnetic nanoparticles for food safety analysis. During the past two decades, various magnetic nanoparticles with different sizes, shapes, and surface modifications have been designed, synthesized, and characterized with the prospering development of material science. Analytical scientists and food scientists are among the ones who bring these novel materials from laboratories to commercial applications. Powerful and versatile surface functional groups and high surface to mass ratios make these magnetic nanoparticles useful tools for high-efficiency capture and preconcentration of certain molecules, even when they exist in trace levels or complicated food matrices. This is why more and more methods for sensitive detection and quantification of hazards in foods are developed based on these magic magnetic tools. In this review, the principles and superiorities of using magnetic nanoparticles for food pollutant analysis are first introduced, like the mechanism of magnetic solid phase extraction, a most commonly used method for food safety-related sample pretreatment. Their design and preparation are presented afterward, alongside the mechanisms underlying their application for different analytical purposes. After that, recently developed magnetic nanoparticle-based methods for dealing with food pollutants such as organic pollutants, heavy metals, and pathogens in different food matrices are summarized in detail. In the end, some humble outlooks on future directions for work in this field are provided.

Abstract
Lead (Pb2+) pollution is a serious food safety issue, rapid detection of Pb2+ residual in food is vital to guarantee food quality and safety. Here we proposed ratiometric aptamer probes, allowing robust Pb2+ supervision in food samples. Pb2+ specific aptamer can bolster a transition of G-quadruplex structural response to Pb2+; this process can be monitored by N-methyl mesoporphyrin IX (NMM), which is highly specific to G-quadruplex. Particularly, the utilization of G-quadruplex specific dye and terminal-labeled fluorophore allowed to endue ratiometric signal outputs towards Pb2+, dramatically increase the robustness for lead detection. The ratiometric G-quadruplex assay allowed a facile and one-pot Pb2+ detection at room temperature using a single-stranded DNA aptamer. We demonstrated its feasibility for detecting lead pollution in fresh eggs and tap water samples. The ratiometric G-quadruplex design is expected to be used for on-site Pb2+ testing associated with food safety.

Abstract
Heavy metals released by various industries are among the major pollutants found in water resources. In this research, biosorption technique was employed to remove cadmium (Cd2+) from an aqueous system using a novel biosorbent developed from okara waste (OW), a residue from soya bean-based food and beverage processing. Characterisation results revealed that the OW biosorbent contained functional groups such as hydroxyl-, carboxyl- and sulphur-based functional groups, and the surface of the biosorbent was rough with multiple fissures which might be the binding sites for the pollutant. The effects of dosage, solution pH, initial Cd2+ concentration, temperature and contact time were investigated using batch adsorption mode. The biosorption equilibrium and kinetic were best described by the Langmuir and Elovich models, respectively. The maximum biosorption capacities predicted by the Langmuir model were 10.91-14.80 mg/g at 30-70 °C, and the biosorption process was favourable as evident from 0 < RL < 1. The uptake of Cd2+ by the OW biosorbent was spontaneous and endothermic. The plausible biosorption mechanisms of this study could be ionic exchange, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The Cd2+ loaded OW biosorbent could be regenerated using 0.4 M of HCl solution and regeneration was studied for 4 adsorption-desorption cycles. The present investigation supported that OW can be reused as a value-added biosorbent product for the removal of Cd2+ from the contaminated water.

Abstract
The removal of toxic metals from the aquatic ecosystem is one of the most pressing environmental and public health concerns today. A strong potential has recently emerged for the removal of such metals using biochar sorbents. Biosorption technology could make a significant difference in the future. It is a viable and cost-effective alternative to the remediation of toxic pollutants utilizing various biomaterials. In the current study, batch and fixed-bed studies were performed to evaluate the performance of Capsicum annuum L. seeds biochar (CASB) as an alternative material in removing toxic Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. Removal characteristics were investigated by considering the equilibrium and kinetic aspects. Biosorption equilibrium was established within 40 min. The optimum dosage of CASB for Pb(II) removal was determined as 2.0 g L-1. Biosorption data were well predicted by a non-linear Langmuir isotherm model. Monolayer biosorption occurred for CASB with a maximum capacity of 36.43 mg g-1. Biosorption kinetics fitted well with a pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The external mass transfer may control Pb(II) transport mechanism. Dynamic flow mode biosorption and regeneration potential of CASB were also examined. The application of CASB exhibited a 100% removal yield in real apple juice samples spiked with low concentrations of Pb(II). Exhausted points for the CASB packed columns were recorded as 195 and 320 min for simulated wastewater (SW) and synthetic Pb(II) solution, respectively. FTIR, BET, SEM-EDX analysis, and zeta potential measurements were used for the characterization of biochar and assessment of the metal ion-biosorbent interaction mechanism. Finally, our study provides a practical approach for the uptake of Pb(II) ions from contaminated solutions.

Abstract
Direct electrochemical detection in real food samples remains challenging due to the fouling and interference by abundant interference components. Herein, we report an electrochemical sensing platform based on binary assembly of silica nanochannels and polydimethylsiloxane that is able to detect Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real food samples without complex pretreatments. Using differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry, the electrochemical detection consists of electro-deposition of metal species and subsequent anodic stripping in the modified silica-nanochannels. Under the optimized conditions, the linear ranges were obtained from 4 to 1500 μg L-1 for Pb2+ and 30 to 900 μg L-1 for Cd2+. The relative standard deviations were 2.9% and 3.6% for Pb2+ and Cd2+ of 300 μg L-1. Without tedious pretreatments, the quantitative detection of Pb2+ and Cd2+ in real juice and beverage samples was successfully performed, revealing that the developed sensor possesses excellent anti-interference and practicability properties for unprocessed food.

Abstract
In this experiment, Lactobacillus fermentum CQPC08 (LF-CQPC08) isolated from traditionally fermented pickles was used to study its mitigation effect on lead acetate-induced oxidative stress and lead ion adsorption capacity in rats. In vitro experiments showed that the survival rate in artificial gastric juice and the growth efficiency in artificial bile salt of LF-CQPC08 was 93.6% ± 2.2% and 77.2% ± 0.8%, and the surface hydrophobicity rate was 45.5% ± 0.3%. The scavenging rates of hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion, and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) were 47.8% ± 0.9%, 63.9% ± 1.2%, and 83.6% ± 1.5%, respectively, and the reduction power was 107.3 ± 2.8 μmol L-1. LF-CQPC08 could not only adsorb 76.9% ± 1.0% lead ions in aqueous solution but also reduce the lead content in serum, liver, kidneys, and brain tissue of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, as well as maintain the cell structure and tissue state of the liver and kidneys. In addition, by examining the indicators of inflammation and oxidation in the serum, liver, and kidneys of SD rats, we found that LF-CQPC08 can reduce the proinflammatory factors interleukin (IL)-1 beta (1β), IL-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and interferon gamma in the body, increase the level of anti-inflammatory factor IL-10, enhance the activity of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and catalase and glutathione levels in serum and organ tissues, and reduce the production of reactive oxygen species and accumulation of lipid peroxide malondialdehyde. LF-CQPC08 can also activate the Keap1/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway to promote high-level expression of the downstream antioxidants heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), NAD(P)H : quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), and γ-glutamylcysteine synthetase (γ-GCS). As food-grade lactic acid bacteria, LF-CQPC08 has great potential and research value in removing heavy metals from food and alleviating the toxicity of heavy metals in the future.

Abstract
The food and water contamination with heavy metals is increasing due to the environmental pollutions. Lead and cadmium are the toxic heavy metals for humans that can be found in air, soil, water, and even food. Lactic acid bacteria have the ability to remove and diminish the level of heavy metals. In this study, Lactobacillus acidophilus was used to remove lead and cadmium in milk and the capability of this valuable bacterium in biosorption of these metals low concentrations (µg/L or ppb) in milk was evaluated. First, the variables on lead and cadmium removal by this bacterium have been studied by Plackett-Burman design. Then, the bioremoval process was optimized and the three main factors, the bacterium concentration, contact time, and the initial heavy metal concentration were chosen by using a central composite design. The optimum lead and cadmium bioremoval yield of 80% and 75% were observed, respectively, at 1 × 1012 CFU of L. acidophilus in milk at the 4th day and the initial ion concentration of 100 µg/L. The 3D plots analysis showed the interaction effects on metal biosorption. This study showed that L. acidophilus is a natural effective biosorbent for lead and cadmium removal from milk.

Abstract
In this study, we designed and synthesized a simple probe 2-(8-((8-methoxyquinolin-2-yl)methoxy)quinolin-2-yl)benzo[d]thiazole (DQT) for detection of Ag+ and Cd2+ in a CH3OH/HEPES (9 : 1 v/v, pH = 7.30) buffer system. Its structure was characterized by NMR, ESI-HR-MS and DFT calculations, and its fluorescence performance was also investigated. Probe DQT showed fluorescence quenching in response to Ag+ and Cd2+ with low detection limits of 0.42 μM and 0.26 μM, respectively. Importantly, the complexation of the probe with Cd2+ resulted in a red shift from blue to green, making it possible to detect Ag+ and Cd2+ by the naked eye under an ultraviolet lamp. The DQT-Cd2+ complex could be used for sequential recognition of S2-. The recovery response could be repeated 3 times by alternate addition of Cd2+ and S2-. A filter paper strip test further demonstrated the potential of probe DQT as a convenient and rapid assay.

Abstract
A graphene aerogel (GA) with a three-dimensional (3D) structure, ultra-lightweight nature, and high hydrophobicity was simply fabricated by the one-step pyrolysis of glucose and ammonium chloride. The as-synthesized GA exhibited a 3D interconnected microporous architecture with a high surface area of ∼2860 m2 g-1 and pore volume of 2.24 cm3 g-1. The hydrophobic GA (10 mg 100 mL-1) demonstrated rapid and excellent adsorption performance for the removal of food toxins such as various biogenic amines (histamine, cadaverine, and spermine) and the hazardous bacterium Staphylococcus aureus (a food contaminant and a cause of poor wound healing) from a liquid matrix with a maximum simultaneous adsorption capacity for multiple biogenic amines of >85.19% (histamine), 74.1% (cadaverine), and 70.11% (spermidine) and a 100% reduction in the viable cell count of S. aureus within 80 min of interaction. The outstanding adsorption capacity can be attributed to a highly interconnected porous network in the 3D architecture and a high surface-to-volume ratio. A case study using soy sauce spiked with multiple biogenic amines showed successful removal of toxins with excellent recyclability without any loss in absorption performance. Biocompatibility of the GA in terms of cell viability was observed even at high concentrations (83.46% and 75.28% at 25 and 50 mg mL-1, respectively). Confirmatory biocompatibility testing was conducted via live/dead cell evaluation, and the morphology of normal lung epithelial cells was examined via scanning electron microscopy showed no cellular shrinkage. Moreover, GA showed excellent removal of live colonies of S. aureus from the food matrix and immunoblotting analysis showed elevated protein expression levels of β-catenin and α-SMA (α-smooth muscle actin). The biocompatible sugar-based GA could simultaneously adsorb multiple biogenic amines and live bacteria and was easy to regenerate via simple separation due to its high floatability, hydrophobicity, surface area, and porosity without any structural and functional loss, making it especially relevant for food safety and biomedical applications.
