Abstract
Chitosan/modified cassava starch/curcumin (CS/S/Cur) films with a crosslinker were developed via the solvent casting technique for the application of food packaging. The effects of citric acid (CA) as a natural crosslinker were assessed at different concentrations (0-10.0%, w/w, on a dry base on CS and S content). To measure the most favorable film, chemical structure and physical, mechanical, and thermal properties were investigated. Successful crosslinking between CS and S was seen clearly in the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra. The properties of the water resistance of the CS/S/Cur films crosslinked with CA were enhanced when compared to those without CA. Furthermore, it was found that the addition of CA crosslinking would improve the mechanical properties of composite films to some extent. It had been reported that the CA crosslinking level of 7.5 wt% of CS/S/Cur film demonstrated high performance in terms of physical properties. The tensile strength of the crosslinked film increased from 8 ± 1 MPa to 12 ± 1 MPa with the increasing content of CA, while water vapor permeability (WVP), swelling degree (SD), and water solubility (WS) decreased. An effective antioxidant scavenging activity of the CS/S/Cur film decreased with an increase in CA concentrations. This study provides an effective pathway for the development of active films based on polysaccharide-based film for food packaging applications.

Abstract
The application of plant essential oils in the food industry is often hindered by their poor water solubility and high volatilize. Encapsulation has emerged as an effective solution to this problem. This study focuses on the preparation of Fructus Ligustri Lucidi essential oil gel spheres (FEOH) based sodium alginate and gelatin. The optimum formulation for FEOH was established by Box-Behnken Design response surface testing, resulting in a composition of 10 % FEO, 5 % TW20 and 2 % CaCl2. This formulation achieved an encapsulation efficiency of 85.56 %. FTIR and SEM results indicated the successful encapsulation of FEO within the gel spheres. Furthermore, DSC and TGA results showed that encapsulation enhanced the thermal stability of the essential oil. At room temperature, the water content of FEOH exceeded 90 %, and it showed the highest swelling ratio of 62.5 % in an alkaline medium at different pH conditions. The in vitro release behavior showed that FEOH was released up to 85.28 % in oil-based food simulants within 2 h. FEOH showed strong antibacterial activity, with a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of 128 mg/mL against Staphylococcus aureus and 256 mg/mL against Escherichia coli. The gel spheres obtained in this research show significant potential as food preservatives in food matrices.

Abstract
Tara (Caesalpinia spinosa, Leguminosae) seed germ (TSG), a by-product of tara gum (E417) extraction, has been used as a protein- and polyphenol-rich food ingredient for human and animal nutrition. Nevertheless, TSG is the alleged culprit for a recent foodborne outbreak of even severe acute illnesses that have affected hundreds of individuals in the USA, perhaps triggered by nonprotein amino acids such as baikiain. Herein, the composition of TSG has been characterized at molecular level, with a focus on proteins, phenolics, lipids, and mineral composition. TSG contains 43.4 % (w/w) proteins, tentatively identified for the first time by proteomics, and 14 % lipids, consisting of 83.6 % unsaturated fatty acids, especially linoleic acid. Ash is surprising high (6.5 %) because of an elevated concentration of P, K, Ca, and Mg. The detection of a rare earth element such as gadolinium (Gd, 1.6 mg kg-1), likely sourced from anthropogenic pollution, suggests alternative hypotheses for the origin of TSG hazards.

Abstract
Curcumin, a bioactive compound derived from the rhizome of Curcuma longa, has gained widespread attention for its potential therapeutic properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anticancer effects. However, its poor aqueous solubility, instability and limited bioavailability have hindered its clinical applications. New beads formulations based on sodium alginate biopolymer (SA) and poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) were successfully prepared and evaluated as a potential drug vehicle for extended release of curcumin (Cur). Pristine and curcumin loaded calcium alginate/poly vinyl alcohol beads (CA/PVA and CA/PVA/Cur) at different compositions of SA and PVA were prepared by an ionotropic gelation method of SA followed by two freeze-thawing (FT) cycles for further crosslinking of PVA. Characterization techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Visible spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and x-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to confirm the successful microencapsulation of curcumin within the CA/PVA microcapsules. Furthermore, the swelling of pristine beads, pH-sensitive properties and in vitro release studies of curcumin loaded beads were investigated at 37 °C in simulated gastric fluid (SGF), simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) and simulated colonic fluid (SCF). The effect of the polymer blend ratio, the encapsulation efficiency (EE %) of curcumin, the loading capacity (LC μg/mg), the sphericity factor (SF), the antioxidant activity of the elaborated beads and their antimicrobial properties against bacteria and fungi were just as much evaluated. The obtained results indicate that the swelling and the behavior of the developed beads were influenced by the pH of the test medium and the PVA content. The introduction of PVA into the SA matrix greatly enhanced the physicochemical properties, the encapsulation efficiency and the loading capacity of the elaborated microparticles. Results also suggested that the antioxidant activity of the loaded beads (CA/PVA/Cur) showed a higher DPPH radical scavenging activity while the bacterial and fungal strains proved sensitive to the different formulations used in the assay. Moreover, the important drug encapsulation efficiency and the sustainable drug release of these materials make them promising for the development of new drug carrier systems for colon targeting.

Abstract
Curcumin is an antioxidant that can effectively eliminate free radicals. However, as its oral bioavailability is low, an effective delivery method is required. Phospholipid-based liposomes can encapsulate lipophilic drugs, such as curcumin, while liposome, cholesterol, and gum Arabic (GA) can enhance the internal and external stability of drug membranes. This present study used concentrations of cholesterol (Cchol) and GA (CGA), ranging from 0 to 10, 20, 30, and 40% as well as 0 to 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, and 40%, respectively, to encapsulate curcumin in a GA-cocoliposome (CCL/GA) matrix and test its efficacy in simulated intestinal fluid (SIF) and simulated gastric fluid (SGF). The absence of new characteristic peaks in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra results indicate the presence of non-covalent interactions in the CCL/GA encapsulation. Furthermore, increasing the Cchol decreased the encapsulation efficiency (EE), loading capacity (LC), and antioxidant activity (IR) of the CCL/GA encapsulation but increased its release rate (RR). Conversely, increasing CGA increased its EE and IR but decreased its LC and RR. The two conditions applied confirmed this. Liposomal curcumin had the highest IR in SIF (84.081%) and the highest RR in SGF (0.657 ppm/day). Furthermore, liposomes loaded with 10% Cchol and 20% CGA performed best in SIF, while those loaded with 10% Cchol and 30% CGA performed best in SGF. Lastly, the CCL/GA performed better in SIF than SGF.

Abstract
Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) reinforced hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) films were functionalized with propolis-loaded zein nanoparticles (ZNP) to develop active, printable, and heat-sealable films. The films with 0, 0.10, 0.25, 0.50, or 0.75 mg/mL propolis-loaded ZNP, named 0ZNP, 0.10ZNP, 0.25ZNP, 0.50ZNP, and 0.75ZNP, respectively, were characterized for their mechanical, physicochemical, structural, functional and optical properties and antioxidant activity. The addition of propolis-loaded ZNP did not change tensile strength (P > 0.05), but increased elongation at break (from 24.72 to 36.58 %) (P < 0.05) for 0.25ZNP film. A water contact angle increased significantly (P < 0.05) for 0.50ZNP (~45 %) and 0.75ZNP (~137 %) films. The 0.25ZNP and 0.75ZNP films were evaluated for packaging cheddar cheese under refrigerated storage for 30 days, and resulted in comparable water activity, pH, titratable acidity, and lipid oxidation (P > 0.05) with those packaged by LDPE film and vacuum package. The developed films can function as eco-friendly alternatives to single-use plastic food packaging.

Abstract
In preference to synthetic or petroleum-based materials, current research in food and pharmaceutical industries has focused on the development of biodegradable and sustainable materials due to their low toxicity, and biocompatibility. In particular, the natural water-soluble polysaccharide tara gum (Caesalpinia spinosa) has been widely used as a food-grade and drug-delivery agent due to its biodegradability, and biocompatibility. Moreover, owing to its easily modifiable hydroxy groups, tara gum, and its derivatives have been employed as food packaging films and pharmaceutical materials. In the present critical review, facile grafting methods of tara gum are reviewed, and an up-to-date comprehensive application of tara gum polysaccharides revealed their uses in pH-sensitive food packaging. In addition, modified tara gum materials exhibited improved drug delivery applications with biocompatible properties. The non-toxic nature and non-Newtonian, pseudoplastic rheological properties as well as the synergistic behavior of tara gum with other polysaccharides explore its further industrial applications in several fields. Additionally, several approaches for improving tara gum for use as a stabilizer and thickener for food items, and monitoring food spoilage, have provided notable customized characteristics. In brief, its many advantages make tara gum polysaccharide a promising material for applications in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Active/intelligent films for the preservation and monitoring of Schizothorax prenanti fillets freshness were prepared by combining curcumin (CUR) with polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) matrix. SEM images showed that the CUR with a maximum content of 1.5 % (w/w) was evenly distributed in the composite matrix. The addition of CUR did not affect the chemical structure of PVA/CS matrix, as confirmed by FTIR investigation. When 1.5 % (w/w) CUR was added, the water vapor barrier property, tensile strength and antioxidant activity of the composite film were the best, which were 5.38 ± 0.25 × 10-11 g/m·s·Pa, 62.05 ± 1.68 MPa and 85.50 ± 3.63 %, respectively. Water solubility of PVA/CS/CUR-1.5 % film was reduced by approximately 27 % compared to PVA/CS film. After adding CUR, the antibacterial properties of the composite film increased significantly. Although the addition of CUR reduced the biodegradability of PVA/CS film, the PVA/CS/CUR-1.5 % film degraded >60 % within 5 weeks. By measuring pH, weight loss, total volatile base‑nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and total viable counts (TVC), the preservation effect of the composite films on the fish freshness was evaluated. The fish shelf life treated by PVA/CS/CUR-1.5 % film expanded from 3-6 days to 12-15 days at 4 °C. In addition, when PVA/CS/CUR-1.5 % film was used to monitor the fish freshness, it exhibited clear color fluctuations, from yellow to orange and to red, corresponding to first-grade freshness, second-grade freshness, and rottenness of the fish, respectively. As a result, the films can be successfully used for Schizothorax prenanti fillets preservation and deterioration monitoring.

Abstract
To conquer the low water solubility and bioavailability of curcumin (CUR), to corroborate its functional qualities and to broaden its applicability in the pharmaceutical sector, numerous nanoscale methods have been widely exploited for its administration. Because of its polycystic, biodegradable, biocompatibility, non-toxicity, and non-allergenic properties, bovine serum albumin (BSA) and glycine (Gly) have been actively investigated as natural biopolymers for decades. Various BSA and Gly-based nanocarriers with unique features for CUR delivery, such as magnetic ferrite nanoparticles, are being developed (MNPs). In this work, magnesium ferrite (MgFe2O4)/BSA and nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4)/Gly nanocomposites loaded with CUR (drug model) were manufactured for the first time using a chemical co-precipitation approach to create biocompatible drug nanocarriers. It was found that the synthesized MgFe2O4/BSA and NiFe2O4/Gly nanoparticles have a uniform particle distribution and their size is much less than 100 nm. Saturation magnetization in MgFe2O4 and NiFe2O4 reaches 13.07 and 33.4 emu/g the remarkable peak of magnetization decreases to 10.99 and 32.36 emu/g after the addition of polymers. These analyses also showed the presence of chemical bonds in the structure of the nanocomposite. The curcumin diffusion process in NPs were determined using a mathematical modeling. The yielding of the product for MgFe2O4/BSA and NiFe2O4/Gly in 200 h is about 72 and 63%, respectively. Also, regressed relative diffusivities (D/R2), including effective steric hindrance, were determined as 5.75 × 10-4 and 2.72 × 10-4 h-1 for MgFe2O4/BSA and NiFe2O4/Gly, respectively. It shows that there is a significant steric barrier that significantly deviates from the molecular diffusion of the liquid. As a result, the low effective release of curcumin in the particles is more noticeable. Our study demonstrated the effective relationship between the polymer architecture and the biophysical properties of the resulting nanoparticles and shed light on new approaches for the design of efficient NP-based drug carriers.

Abstract
Several polyurethane-formulated films with curcumin and/or chitosan additives for food packaging have been previously obtained. The study examines the effect of the additives on the film's morphological, mechanical, barrier, and migration properties. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water contact angle, thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TGA and DTGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA), oxygen transmission rate (OTR), water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), and the overall and specific migration tests were conducted. The results show that the presence of chitosan significantly increased the overall migration and mechanical properties, such as the elongation at break, tensile strength, and Young's modulus of most polyurethane formulations, while curcumin had a minor influence on the mechanical performance. Based on the results, formulations with curcumin but without chitosan are suitable for food packaging.

Abstract
Encapsulating curcumin (CUR) in nanocarriers such as liposomes, polymeric micelles, silica nanoparticles, protein-based nanocarriers, solid lipid nanoparticles, and nanocrystals could be efficient for a variety of industrial and biomedical applications. Nanofibers containing CUR represent a stable polymer-drug carrier with excellent surface-to-volume ratios for loading and cell interactions, tailored porosity for controlled CUR release, and diverse properties that fit the requirements for numerous applications. Despite the mentioned benefits, electrospinning is not capable of producing fibers from multiple polymers and biopolymers, and the product's effectiveness might be affected by various machine- and material-dependent parameters like the voltage and the flow rate of the electrospinning process. This review delves into the current and innovative recent research on nanofibers containing CUR and their various applications.

Abstract
Nanofibrous composite membranes consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), chitosan-nano zinc oxide nanoparticles (CS-Nano-ZnO) and curcumin (Cur) were prepared by ultrasonic processing and electrospinning. When the ultrasonic power was set to 100 W, the prepared CS-Nano-ZnO had a minimum size (404.67 ± 42.35 nm) and a generally uniform particle size distribution (PDI = 0.32 ± 0.10). The composite fiber membrane with Cur: CS-Nano-ZnO mass ratio of 5:5 exhibited the best water vapor permeability, strain and stress. Furthermore, the inhibitory rates against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were 91.93 ± 2.07 % and 93.00 ± 0.83 %, respectively. The Kyoho grape fresh-keeping trial revealed that grape berries wrapped with composite fiber membrane still maintained good quality and a higher rate of good fruit (60.25 ± 1.46 %) after 12 days of storage. The shelf life of grape was extended by at least 4 days. Thus, nanofibrous composite membranes based on CS-Nano-ZnO and Cur was expected to be used as an active material for food packaging.

Abstract
Curcumin, one of the major ingredients of turmeric (Curcuma longa), has been widely reported for its diverse bioactivities, including against malaria and inflammatory-related diseases. However, curcumin's low bioavailability limits its potential as an antimalarial and anti-inflammatory agent. Therefore, research on the design and synthesis of novel curcumin derivatives is being actively pursued to improve the pharmacokinetic profile and efficacy of curcumin. This review discusses the antimalarial and anti-inflammatory activities and the structure-activity relationship (SAR), as well as the mechanisms of action of curcumin and its derivatives in malarial treatment. This review provides information on the identification of the methoxy phenyl group responsible for the antimalarial activity and the potential sites and functional groups of curcumin for structural modification to improve its antimalarial and anti-inflammatory actions, as well as potential molecular targets of curcumin derivatives in the context of malaria and inflammation.

Abstract
Although polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a potential biodegradable food packaging material, it has several critical limitations: low mechanical strength, poor ultraviolet (UV) and water vapor barrier properties, and lack of antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Previous studies have used cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) to improve the mechanical and water vapor barrier properties of the PVA matrix. In this study, a multifunctional nanocomposite for food packaging applications was developed by incorporating titanium dioxide (TiO2) and apple peel extract (APE) into a PVA/CNC matrix. The combination of TiO2 and APE in the nanocomposites not only enhanced multifunctionality but also improved mechanical and barrier properties. The mechanical strength and water vapor barrier properties of PVA/CNC/TiO2/APE (5 wt% TiO2 and 20 wt% APE in the PVA/CNC matrix containing 5 wt% of CNCs) increased by 49.9 % and 36.6 % compared to PVA. Furthermore, PVA/CNC/TiO2/APE exhibited an excellent UV barrier (UV-protection factor of 1012.73) and high antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. In food packaging tests with fresh cherry tomatoes and potatoes, PVA/CNC/TiO2/APE effectively protected samples from external influences and prolonged their self-life, demonstrating the potential use of this nanocomposite as a biodegradable and multifunctional food packaging material.

Abstract
A natural biopolymer bilayer film based on chitosan and bacterial cellulose with a protective layer of pullulan was developed by a two-step solution casting method. Curcumin was incorporated as an active antioxidant and antibacterial agent into the inner layer. The films with different curcumin concentrations were systematically characterized. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analyses showed high compatibility between curcumin and the polysaccharide matrix through intermolecular interactions, which was verified by enhanced mechanical and barrier properties. The curcumin incorporation improved the thermal stability by >35.4 %, along with lower visible and ultraviolet light transmittance (< 8.6 %) and water solubility (< 25.1 %). The film had both antibacterial and antioxidant properties, and the sustained release of curcumin was largest (> 58.8 %) in the fatty food simulant lasting for over 155 h. The results suggested that the film containing 0.2 % curcumin had ideal physical and functional properties, suggesting its potential as a novel packaging material for the preservation of high-fat food.

Abstract
A global release model is proposed to study the drug release from porous materials for pharmaceutical applications. This model is defined by implementing a compartmental model where the release profile could be explained as the combination of mass transfer phenomena through three compartments as well as a desorption process or dissolution process from the support. This model was validated with five different systems produced with supercritical CO2 (aerogels, membranes, and fibers), showing different release processes. Numerical results indicate that this compartmental approach can be useful to determine adsorption and desorption constants as well as mass transfer resistances within the material. Likewise, this model can predict lag phases and imbibition phenomena. Therefore, the development of compartmental models can be an alternative to traditional models to successfully predict the drug profile of porous materials, achieving a complete understanding of the involved phenomena regardless of the material characteristics.

Abstract
The development of biopolymer-based green packaging films has gained remarkable attention in recent years. In this study, curcumin active films were prepared using different proportions of gelatin (GE) and a soluble fraction of tragacanth gum (SFTG) (1GE:1SFTG and 2GE:1SFTG) by complex coacervation. The various ratios of used biopolymers did not significantly impact the mechanical properties, thickness, and WVP of final films. However, biopolymers' ratio impacted the moisture content, water solubility, swelling ratio, and release rate. Blending curcumin with biopolymers caused a reduction in tensile strength (from 1.74 MPa to 0.62 MPa for film containing 1GE:1SFTG and from 1.77 MPa to 0.17 MPa for film containing 2GE:1SFTG) and proliferation in elongation at break (from 81.48% to 122.00% for film containing 1GE:1SFTG and from 98.87% to 109.58% MPa for film containing 2GE:1SFTG). Moisture content and water solubility of films experienced a decrease after the addition of curcumin. Antioxidant activity of curcumin-loaded films was almost five times higher than neat film samples. Furthermore, the interreaction between the carboxylic group of SFTG and amide I of GE formed an amide linkage and was proven by FTIR analysis. TGA showed a drop in the thermal stability of film samples compared to the main ingredients. In general, the complex coacervate of SFTG and GE has the advantage of developing eco-friendly and low-cost packaging film in the food industry, especially for the protection of fatty foods.

Abstract
The research objective was to analyse the incorporation effect of gambier filtrate and rosella flower petals extract on mechanical properties and antioxidant activity of canna starch-based active edible film. This research used an experimental method consisting of two treatments, namely gambier filtrate (A): A1 = 3, A2 = 4, and A3 = 5 (% v/v), as well as rosella flower petals extract (B): B1 = 2, B2 = 4 and B3 = 6 (% v/v) and each treatment was replicated three times. The results showed that the two treatment interactions significantly influenced elongation percentage, water vapour transmission rate, and antioxidant activity. The edible film’s thickness, tensile strength, and water vapour transmission rate were 0.096-0.124 mm, 1.89-3.38 MPa, and 12.99-17.04 g.m-2.d-1, respectively. The edible film contains an antioxidant compound of the strong category with IC50 values of 34.53 to 48.02 ppm. Treatment of A3B2 [gambier filtrate 5% (v/v) and rosella flower petals extract 4% (v)] was the best treatment. This edible film is generally suitable for application as a packaging material for food having high lipid content to inhibit the oxidation process of that food.

Abstract
The spoilage of fruit is one of the most important causes of fruit waste. High humidity by fresh fruit respiration leads to bacterial reproduction, which is the key factor of products corruption. Herein, a biological multifunctional film (Cur-HKUST-1@CMS/PVA) for fruits preservation with a high moisture environment was developed by cross-linking carboxymethyl starch (CMS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) with MOF-199 (HKUST-1), and loaded with curcumin. The hydrophilic CMS facilitates water adsorption and moisture can stimulate curcumin release from HKUST-1. HKUST-1 not only acts as curcumin carriers but also forms synergistic antibacterial with curcumin to improve the antibacterial activity of the composites. XRD and SEM demonstrated that moisture disrupts the structure of HKUST-1 and releases curcumin and the results showed that the release of curcumin increased from 25.11 % to 58.32 % after moisture stimulation. In addition, Cur-HKUST-1@CMS/PVA had excellent antibacterial activity and antioxidant ability. As validation, the film can keep pitaya and avocado freshness at least 4 days longer than the control, confirming the effectiveness of Cur-HKUST-1@CMS/PVA in preventing fruit decay. Consequently, Cur-HKUST-1@CMS/PVA is a promising active packaging material for improve the shelf life of perishable fruits.

Abstract
Edible packaging has been developed as a biodegradable and non-toxic alternative to traditional petroleum-based food packaging. Biopolymeric edible films, in addition to their passive protective function, may also play a bioactive role as vehicles for bioactive compounds of importance to human health. In recent years, a new generation of edible food packaging has been developed to incorporate ingredients with functional potential that have beneficial effects on consumer health. Curcumin, a bioactive compound widely used as a natural dye obtained from turmeric rhizomes (Curcuma longa L.), has a broad spectrum of beneficial properties for human health, such as anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and other activities. To demonstrate these properties, curcumin has been explored as a bioactive agent for the development of bioactive packaging, which can be referred to as functional packaging and used in food. The aim of this review was to describe the current and potential research on the development of functional-edible-films incorporating curcumin for applications such as food packaging.

Abstract
This work proposed a one-pot green route for the development of a biocompatible Tara gum-Riceberry phenolics‑silver nanosphere hybrid nanocomposite (TG/RiPE-SNG) with manifold biological potentialities. The reaction system comprised of AgNO3 as nanosilver precursor, Riceberry phenolic extract as the green in situ reductant, and Tara gum as stabilizing and anchoring agent. TG/RiPE-SNG was extensively characterized using UV-vis spectroscopy, FTIR, RAMAN, TEM, FESEM, EDX, DLS/zeta potential, XRD, and TGA analyses. Small, stable, spherical, well-dispersed SNP with an average particle size of 13.01 nm and λmax of 421 nm were synthesized in situ, and uniformly distributed within the gel-like TG/RiPE composite. The prepared nanocomposite demonstrated superior antibacterial properties (MIC of 12.5 μg/mL) against S. aureus and S. epidermidis compared to the gum or extract. Additionally, TG/RiPE-SNG exhibited strong light barrier, tyrosinase inhibitory and antioxidant functionalities. TG/RiPE-SNG also exhibited high stability at different pH and was more thermally stable relative to the plain TG/RiPE composite. Furthermore, TG/RiPE-SNG showed good biocompatibility towards mouse L929 fibroblasts and rat erythrocytes. The obtained findings revealed a simple, benign, and inexpensive approach using only natural ingredients for the preparation of gum-based biopolymer-nanosilver hybrid nanocomposite and underscored the strong attributes of TG/RiPE-SNP as a nanomaterial with desirable biomedical potentials.

Abstract
Curcumin (1,7-bis-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione) is a natural lipophilic polyphenol that exhibits significant pharmacological effects in vitro and in vivo through various mechanisms of action. Numerous studies have identified and characterised the pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and clinical properties of curcumin. Curcumin has an anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antinociceptive, antiparasitic, antimalarial effect, and it is used as a wound-healing agent. However, poor curcumin absorption in the small intestine, fast metabolism, and fast systemic elimination cause poor bioavailability of curcumin in human beings. In order to overcome these problems, a number of curcumin formulations have been developed. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of recent research in biological and pharmaceutical aspects of curcumin, methods of sample preparation for its isolation (Soxhlet extraction, ultrasound extraction, pressurised fluid extraction, microwave extraction, enzyme-assisted aided extraction), analytical methods (FTIR, NIR, FT-Raman, UV-VIS, NMR, XRD, DSC, TLC, HPLC, HPTLC, LC-MS, UPLC/Q-TOF-MS) for identification and quantification of curcumin in different matrices, and different techniques for developing formulations. The optimal sample preparation and use of an appropriate analytical method will significantly improve the evaluation of formulations and the biological activity of curcumin.

Abstract
Olive mill wastewater, a high polyphenols agro-food by-product, was successfully exploited in an eco-friendly radical process to synthesize an antioxidant macromolecule, usefully engaged as a functional ingredient to prepare functional puddings. The chemical composition of lyophilized olive mill wastewaters (LOMW) was investigated by HPLC-MS/MS and 1H-NMR analyses, while antioxidant profile was in vitro evaluated by colorimetric assays. Oleuropein aglycone (5.8 μg mL-1) appeared as the main compound, although relevant amounts of an isomer of the 3-hydroxytyrosol glucoside (4.3 μg mL-1) and quinic acid (4.1 μg mL-1) were also detected. LOMW was able to greatly inhibit ABTS radical (IC50 equal to 0.019 mg mL-1), displaying, in the aqueous medium, an increase in its scavenger properties by almost one order of magnitude compared to the organic one. LOMW reactive species and tara gum chains were involved in an eco-friendly grafting reaction to synthesize a polymeric conjugate that was characterized by spectroscopic, calorimetric and toxicity studies. In vitro acute oral toxicity was tested against 3T3 fibroblasts and Caco-2 cells, confirming that the polymers do not have any effect on cell viability at the dietary use concentrations. Antioxidant properties of the polymeric conjugate were also evaluated, suggesting its employment as a thickening agent, in the preparation of pear puree-based pudding. High performance of consistency and relevant antioxidants features over time (28 days) were detected in the milk-based foodstuff, in comparison with its non-functional counterparts, confirming LOWM as an attractive source to achieve high performing functional foods.

Abstract
The use of food industry waste as bioactive compounds in the modification of biodegradable films as food packaging remains a major challenge. This study describes the preparation and bioactivity characterization of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)-based films with the addition of the bioactive compounds curcumin (CUR) and carvacrol (CAR). Films based on PBS modified with curcumin and carvacrol at different concentration variations (0%/0.1%/1%) were prepared by solvent casting method. The antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antibiofilm properties were investigated against bacteria (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus) and fungi (Candida albicans). As a result of the modification, the films exhibited free radicals scavenging (DPPH up to 91.47% and ABTS up to 99.21%), as well as antimicrobial (6 log, 4 log, and 2 log reductions for E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans, respectively, for samples modified with 1% CUR and 1% CAR) activity. Moreover, antibiofilm activity of modified materials was observed (8.22-87.91% reduction of biofilm, depending on bioactive compounds concentration). PBS films modified with curcumin and carvacrol with observed bifunctional properties have many potential applications as active packaging.

Abstract
Active and intelligent food packaging is an innovative technology to prevent food contamination and ensure food quality and safety. Active packaging protects the food from microbial contamination, while smart or intelligent packaging enables monitoring the freshness of the food or quality change in real-time. Curcumin, one of the most well-known natural colorants, has received a lot of attention for its excellent functional properties and ability to change color with changes in pH. Curcumin, the golden component of turmeric, a spice widely used in food since ancient times, is a cost-effective and abundant biomaterial with various biological properties such as antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, antitumor, and anti-inflammatory. Recently, active packaging or intelligent packaging systems have been actively developed using the functional properties of curcumin. In this review, we briefly reviewed curcumin's basic biological functions and discussed comprehensive and recent progress in using curcumin in various polymer-based active and smart food packaging applications.

Abstract
While antioxidants are widely known as natural components of healthy food and drinks or as additives to commercial polymer materials to prevent their degradation, recent years have seen increasing interest in enhancing the antioxidant functionality of newly developed polymer materials and coatings. This paper provides a critical overview and comparative analysis of multiple ways of integrating antioxidants within diverse polymer materials, including bulk films, electrospun fibers, and self-assembled coatings. Polyphenolic antioxidant moieties with varied molecular architecture are in the focus of this Review, because of their abundance, nontoxic nature, and potent antioxidant activity. Polymer materials with integrated polyphenolic functionality offer opportunities and challenges that span from the fundamentals to their applications. In addition to the traditional blending of antioxidants with polymer materials, developments in surface grafting and assembly via noncovalent interaction for controlling localization versus migration of antioxidant molecules are discussed. The versatile chemistry of polyphenolic antioxidants offers numerous possibilities for programmed inclusion of these molecules in polymer materials using not only van der Waals interactions or covalent tethering to polymers, but also via their hydrogen-bonding assembly with neutral molecules. An understanding and rational use of interactions of polyphenol moieties with surrounding molecules can enable precise control of concentration and retention versus delivery rate of antioxidants in polymer materials that are critical in food packaging, biomedical, and environmental applications.

Abstract
This study demonstrates a pH-responsive antibacterial film based on polyvinyl alcohol/poly (acrylic acid) incorporated with aminoethyl-phloretin (PVA/PAA-AEP) for intelligent food packaging. The thermal, mechanical, barrier and light transmittance properties of PVA/PAA are enhanced by PAA presence of ≤6%. The interactions between PVA and PAA were hydrogen and ester bonds. The pH-responsive characteristic is dependent on the protonation/deprotonation tendency of the carboxylic groups on PAA in acidic/alkaline environment. The PVA/PAA3 is selected for the incorporation of AEP and its pH-responsive swelling follows Ritger-Peppas and Schott second-order models. The AEP is hydrogen bonded with the matrix of PVA/PAA3 and the release of AEP is pH-responsive and a rate-limiting step following the First-order model. With pH decrease, the predominant release control was gradually changing from polymer relaxation to Fick diffusion. The PVA/PAA3-AEP films demonstrate AEP content dependent antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Furthermore, the antibacterial efficiency against Listeria monocytogenes and Staphylococcus aureus is significantly better than Escherichia coli. The target film PVA/PAA3-AEP3 can effectively prolong the shelf-life of pork (TVB-N < 25 mg/100 g) by 4 days at 25 °C, suggesting its great potential in intelligent food packaging.

Abstract
There has been keen interest in developing biodegradable food packaging materials using polysaccharides. Plant polyphenols are natural antioxidants with many health effects. Different types of plant extracts rich in polyphenols have been formulated into polysaccharide based films and coatings for food packaging. The packaging increases the shelf life of food products by decreasing the quality loss due to oxidation and microbiological growth. The release of polyphenols from the films is modulated. Polysaccharide films incorporated with certain types of polyphenols can be used to indicate the freshness of animal based products. To formulate films with desirable mechanical and barrier properties, addition levels and types of plant extracts, plasticisers and composite polysaccharide materials used should be optimized. The potential of polysaccharide based films with added polyphenols to stop the SARS-CoV-2 transmission through food supply chain is discussed. Polysaccharide based films fortified with polyphenol extracts are multifunctional with potential for active and intelligent packaging.

Abstract
The bioavailability and clinical effect of curcumin (Cur) are greatly restricted due to its physicochemical instability and high hydrophobicity. To overcome the disadvantages, the nanofibers of poly(lactide-glycolide)/chitosan loaded with Cur (PLGA/CS/Cur) was developed here by electrospinning technique for controlled Cur delivery. The incorporated Cur was well-dispersed and maintained crystalline form in PLGA/CS fiber matrix by hydrogen bonding. The incorporation of Cur had no obvious influence on the fiber size and morphology but exerted impacts on thermal stability. At pH 7.4, the release followed Fickian diffusion mechanism; while at pH 2.0, the release followed the coexistence of diffusion and erosion mechanisms. In addition, the amount of Cur released at pH 2.0 was much higher than that at pH 7.4. As a result, the nanofibers demonstrated higher anticancer activity at acidic environment. Therefore, the PLGA/CS/Cur nanofibers may be served as a potential pH responsive vehicle for the controlled drug delivery.

Abstract
Curcumin is a poly phenolic compound extracted from turmeric. Over the past years, it has acquired significant interest among researchers due to its numerous pharmacological activities like anti- cancer, anti-alzheimer, anti-diabetic, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and so on. However, the clinical use of curcumin is still obstructed due to tremendously poor bioavailability, rapid metabolism, lower gastrointestinal absorption, and low permeability through cell that makes its pharmacology thrilling. These issues have led to enormous surge of investigation to develop curcumin nano formulations which can overcome these restrictive causes. The scientists all across the universe are working on designing several drug delivery systems viz. liposomes, micelles, magnetic nano carriers, etc. for curcumin and its composites which not only improve its physiochemical properties but also enhanced its therapeutic applications. The review aims to systematically examine the treasure of information about the medicinal use of curcumin. This article delivers a general idea of the current study piloted to overwhelm the complications with the bioavailability of curcumin which have exhibited an enhanced biological activity than curcumin. This article explains the latest and detailed study of curcumin and its conjugates, its phytochemistry and biological perspectives and also proved curcumin as an efficient drug candidate for the treatment of numerous diseases. Recent advancements and futuristic viewpoints are also deliberated, which shall help researchers and foster commercial translations of improved nanosized curcumin combination for the treatment of various diseases.

Abstract
Baicalin, an active flavonoid ingredient of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, was extracted by heat reflux extraction and showed the same significance UV absorption property with standard baicalin. Active films were prepared from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) containing baicalin extract by casting method. The effect of baicalin extracts on the UV-blocking, optical, antioxidant property, water vapor permeability, swelling and mechanical properties of the films were studied. UV–vis transmittance spectra showed that PVA films incorporated with baicalin extract blocked ultraviolet light range from 280–400 nm even with low concentration of baicalin (0.5 wt%) and maintain the high transparency in visible spectrum. The outstanding UV-blocking properties of PVA films incorporated with baicalin extract were also confirmed by Rhodamine B degradation. Baicalin conferred antioxidant properties to PVA films as determined by DPPH radical scavenging activity. Due to the interaction between hydroxy groups of baicalin and PVA molecule, water vapor permeability, swelling and elongation at break of the films were decreased accompanied with the increasing in tensile strength and Young’s modulus. FTIR reveal that the interaction between PVA molecules was significant changed by the introduction of baicalin. These results suggest that PVA film incorporated with baicalin extract can be used for the development of functional protective film.

Abstract
To deal with serious environmental damage resulting from plastic packaging materials, biodegradable films using natural products have gained considerable attention. Here, we provide a simple, fast, and environmentally-friendly route to construct a biodegradable film using chitosan (CS), bacterial cellulose (BC), and curcumin (Cur). Composite films (CSn-BC-Cur) using CS with different molecular weights were investigated, and their water moisture content (MC), water solubility (WS), contact angle (CA), mechanical properties, barrier properties, and antioxidant properties were compared. The obtained films were characterized by SEM, XRD, and TGA. The results showed that chitosan with a higher molecular weight presented higher contact angles and mechanical properties, along with a lower moisture content, water vapor transmission rate, and oxygen transmission rate. Furthermore, when the composite film was placed in 95 % ethanol, it released active substances. The results suggest that these composite films can be used as promising materials for food packaging.

Abstract
In this work, cellulose acetate films were prepared with the incorporation of different carotenoids (lycopene, norbixin, and zeaxanthin). The effect of adding these natural antioxidants was evaluated through stability during storage under controlled conditions (temperature and light), degradation rate coefficient, release in food simulants and protective effect on oxidation of vitamin B2. During storage at 25 °C or 40 °C the light showed a greater effect on the stability of the carotenoids, with significant increase in reaction constants (k) and decrease in half-life (t1/2). The degradation of the carotenoids was followed by a variation in the color parameters and mechanical properties. The films with norbixin showed the highest barrier to the transmission of UV-Vis light, consequently preserving 72% of a vitamin B2 stored under a photooxidative environment. Lycopene presented a higher release rate than norbixin and zeaxanthin to a fatty food simulant.
