Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Fructooligosaccharide (FOS) supplementation can stimulate beneficial intestinal bacteria growth, but little is known about its influence on training performance. Therefore, this study analyzed FOS and exercise effects on gut microbiota and intestinal morphology of C57Bl/6 mice. METHODS Forty male mice were divided into four groups: standard diet-sedentary (SDS), standard diet-exercised (SDE), FOS supplemented (7.5% FOS)-sedentary (FDS), and FOS supplemented-exercised (FDE), n = 10 each group. Exercise training consisted of 60 min/day, 3 days/week, for 12 weeks. RESULTS SDE and FDE groups had an increase in aerobic performance compared to the pretraining period and SDS and FDS groups (P < 0.01), respectively. Groups with FOS increased colonic crypts size (P < 0.05). The FDE group presented rich microbiota (α-diversity) compared to other groups. The FDE group also acquired a greater microbial abundance (β-diversity) than other groups. The FDE group had a decrease in the Ruminococcaceae (P < 0.002) and an increase in Roseburia (P < 0.003), Enterorhabdus (P < 0.004) and Anaerotruncus (P < 0.006). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that aerobic exercise associated with FOS supplementation modulates gut microbiota and can increase colonic crypt size without improving endurance exercise performance.

Abstract
BACKGROUND High dietary carbohydrates can spare protein in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) but may affect growth and health. Inulin, a prebiotic, could have nutritional and metabolic effects, along with anti-inflammatory properties in teleosts, improving growth and welfare. We tested this hypothesis in rainbow trout by feeding them a 100% plant-based diet, which is a viable alternative to fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture feeds. In a two-factor design, we examined the impact of inulin (2%) as well as the variation in the carbohydrates (CHO)/plant protein ratio on rainbow trout. We assessed the influence of these factors on zootechnical parameters, plasma metabolites, gut microbiota, production of short-chain fatty acids and lactic acid, as well as the expression of free-fatty acid receptor genes in the mid-intestine, intermediary liver metabolism, and immune markers in a 12-week feeding trial. RESULTS The use of 2% inulin did not significantly change the fish intestinal microbiota, but interestingly, the high CHO/protein ratio group showed a change in intestinal microbiota and in particular the beta diversity, with 21 bacterial genera affected, including Ralstonia, Bacillus, and 11 lactic-acid producing bacteria. There were higher levels of butyric, and valeric acid in groups fed with high CHO/protein diet but not with inulin. The high CHO/protein group showed a decrease in the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (il1b, il8, and tnfa) in liver and a lower expression of the genes coding for tight-junction proteins in mid-intestine (tjp1a and tjp3). However, the 2% inulin did not modify the expression of plasma immune markers. Finally, inulin induced a negative effect on rainbow trout growth performance irrespective of the dietary carbohydrates. CONCLUSIONS With a 100% plant-based diet, inclusion of high levels of carbohydrates could be a promising way for fish nutrition in aquaculture through a protein sparing effect whereas the supplementation of 2% inulin does not appear to improve the use of CHO when combined with a 100% plant-based diet.

Abstract
The gastrointestinal tract (GIT) promotes the digestion and absorption of feeds, in addition to the excretion of waste products of digestion. In fish, the GIT is divided into four regions, the headgut, foregut, midgut, and hindgut, to which glands and lymphoid tissues are associated to release digestive enzymes and molecules involved in the immune response and control of host-pathogens. The GIT is inhabited by different species of resident microorganisms, the microbiota, which have co-evolved with the host in a symbiotic relationship and are responsible for metabolic benefits and counteracting pathogen infection. There is a strict connection between a fish's gut microbiota and its health status. This review focuses on the modulation of fish microbiota by feed additives based on prebiotics and probiotics as a feasible strategy to improve fish health status and gut efficiency, mitigate emerging diseases, and maximize rearing and growth performance. Furthermore, the use of histological assays as a valid tool for fish welfare assessment is also discussed, and insights on nutrient absorptive capacity and responsiveness to pathogens in fish by gut morphological endpoints are provided. Overall, the literature reviewed emphasizes the complex interactions between microorganisms and host fish, shedding light on the beneficial use of prebiotics and probiotics in the aquaculture sector, with the potential to provide directions for future research.

Abstract
The effects of Bacillus spp. (7 Log CFU g-1 feed) and fructooligosaccharide (FOS, 1%) as functional feed additives, either alone or in combination, were evaluated in a study on rohu, Labeo rohita fingerlings. The fish were fed different diets for 90 days, including a control diet and diets supplemented with FOS, B. licheniformis, B. methylotrophicus or synbiotic formulations of these. The results showed that the combination of B. licheniformis and FOS significantly improved weight gain, feed utilisation and protease activity compared to the other groups. Overall, the groups supplemented with probiotics and synbiotics (B. licheniformis + FOS or B. methylotrophicus + FOS) showed improvements in haematology, serum biochemistry and immune parameters compared to the control group. After 90 days of experimental feeding, the fish were challenged with pathogenic Aeromonas hydrophila, and data on haematology, immunity and stress parameters were collected. The results indicated that the application of Bacillus spp. and FOS boosted immunity and resistance to physiological stress in the fish. The highest post-challenge survival rate was observed in fish fed a diet with B. licheniformis and FOS, indicating the potential of this particular combination of functional feed additives to enhance growth, immunity and disease resistance in L. rohita.

Abstract
Herbal treatment augments immune and antioxidant responses and suppresses stress in fish. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a popular plant with medicinal uses because of its immunostimulant, antimicrobial, and antioxidant characteristics. This study aimed to investigate the effects of ginger (Z. officinale) on growth, digestive enzymes activity, antioxidant and immune response, and salinity stress resistance of Caspian roach (Rutilus caspicus). Fish (0.98 ± 0.09 g) were divided into four treatment-fed diets containing 0 (control, Z0), 10 (Z10), 20 (Z20), and 30 (Z30) g/kg ginger powder for 56 days and then subjected to 2 g/L salinity stress for 48 hr. The highest final weight of specific growth rate (SGR), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase activity and the lowest final weight of feed conversion ratio (FCR) and malondialdehyde (MDA) were observed in fish-fed diets containing 10 and 20 g/kg ginger inclusion. Intestinal protease activity significantly increased in Z10 treatment, and the highest amylase and lipase activities were related to control, including 10 g/kg ginger in the diet compared to the control group had a significant effect on immune indices such as immunoglobulin M (IgM) and ACH50 (p < 0.05). The highest lysozyme was obtained in Z20 treatment, which had a significant difference in the control (p < 0.05). Cortisol and glucose levels were significantly lower in ginger treatments than the control before and/or after salinity stress. Histopathologic results showed that hyperplasia, edema, expansion of secondary lamella, epithelial cells, and necrosis of gills were most common lesions. However, the results of this study demonstrate that using ginger powder in addition to improving of growth, it can be also effective in survival rate of Caspian roach fingerling as an endangered species exposed to salinity stress.

Abstract
To counter the recurrent outbreaks of bacterial (acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease; AHPND) and viral (white spot disease; WSD) shrimp diseases, which still remain a threat to the global industry, shrimp gut microbiota research has been gaining more attention in recent years, and the use of probiotics in aquaculture has had promising results in improving shrimp gut health and immunity. In this review based on our studies on AHPND and WSD, we summarize our current understanding of the shrimp gastrointestinal tract and the role of the microbiota in disease, as well as effects of probiotics. We focus particularly on the concept of microbiota resilience, and consider strategies that can be used to restore shrimp gut health by probiotic intervention at a crucial time during gut microbiota dysbiosis. Based on the available scientific evidence, we argue that the use of probiotics potentially has an important role in controlling disease in shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of dietary fructooligosaccharide (FOS) on growth performance, biochemical indexes, intestinal morphology, and growth-related gene expression of blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) infected by Aeromonas hydrophila (AH). Two hundred twenty-five healthy blunt snout bream with an initial body weight of 38.41 ± 0.88 g were randomly divided into five groups with three replicates: control (basal diet), model (AH + basal diet), SFOS (AH + 2 g/kg FOS), MFOS (AH + 4 g/kg FOS), LFOS (AH + 6 g/kg FOS). After 9 weeks of feeding, the results showed that the FOS-added diet abrogated AH-induced retardation, hemorrhage, and inflammatory infiltration. FOS supplementation enhanced the growth performance degradation caused by AH, and the highest growth performance was observed at MFOS. Meanwhile, the addition of FOS to feed improved the blood immunity reduced by AH. In expansion, the mucosal epithelium of intestinal villi exfoliated, exposing the lamina propria, and a few villi were genuinely harmed in the model group. Fish fed with MFOS ameliorated the damaged intestine, evidenced by well-preserved intestine architecture. Furthermore, the model group downregulated the expression of growth-related genes (growth hormone receptor (GHR), insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1)). Fish fed with 2 g/kg or 4 g/kg FOS upregulated the genes specified above expressions in the liver compared with the model group. In conclusion, the results mentioned above suggested that the dietary FOS could relieve the pressure to elevate the immune damage and intestine injury induced by AH and enhance the hepatic expression of IGF-1 and GHR.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of Bacillus subtilis and fructooligosaccharide (FOS) on growth performances, immunity improvement, and disease resistance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The fish (24.5 ± 1.6 g) were fed a basal diet (G1), diets supplemented with 1 g/kg (G2), 3 g/kg (G3) and 5 g/kg (G4) of FOS as well as diets supplemented with 1 × 109 CFU/g (G5), 3 × 109 CFU/g (G6) and 5 × 109 CFU/g (G7) of B. subtilis for 56 days. After the feeding trial, the complement C3, IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-γ, hsp70 gene expression in the liver was then analyzed by a quantitative Real-time PCR. Then, fish were infected with Streptococcus agalactiae, and the survival rate was recorded. The results showed that FOS and B. subtilis had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on growth performances and survival rate. Lysozyme activity was significantly greater in the G4, G5, G6, and G7 groups. Also, all fish fed FOS and B. subtilis showed significantly (P < 0.05) higher respiratory burst activity than other groups. The expressions of complement C3, IL-1β, TNF-α, IFN-γ, and hsp-70 in the liver were significantly higher for fish fed 5 g/kg of FOS as well as for fish that received any concentration level of B. subtilis (P < 0.05) used in the study. After the S. agalactiae challenge test, the survival rate of fish-fed diets supplemented with FOS and B. subtilis was slightly higher than for the control group. The results indicated that FOS and B. subtilis could stimulate immune responses and immune-related genes in tilapia. However, further investigation of other prebiotics or herbs in combination with B. subtilis is encouraged at molecular levels and screening for beneficial metabolites that may increasingly improve digestive enzymes, growth performances, and health benefits in tilapia. In addition, on-farm experiments are needed.

Abstract
High-carbohydrate diet could achieve cost-sparing effect in aquafeed, but it may cause adverse effects on the growth condition or health status of fish. In order to reduce the adverse effects caused by high carbohydrate diet, mannan oligosaccharides (MOS), a commonly used prebiotics, was used as the feed additive to feed juvenile Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (1.19 ± 0.01g) for ten weeks. Three treatments including CON (35% carbohydrate diet), HC (45% carbohydrate diet) and HM (45% carbohydrate supplemented diet with 5 g/kg MOS) were involved. The results showed that MOS supplementation increased the weight gain and body length of juvenile Nile tilapia compared with the HC group. Addition of MOS decreased serum glucose and liver glycogen by increasing enzymes activity related to glycolysis. Furthermore, supplementation of MOS decreased the high carbohydrate diet induced triglycerides accumulation in liver by reducing the expression level of genes related to TG synthesis. Dietary MOS also down-regulated the gene expression level of inflammation factors in liver. Intestinal bacterial composition analyses showed that supplementation of MOS in high carbohydrate diet altered the gut microbial composition and enriched pathways related to the glucose metabolism based on KEGG analyses. In general, our results demonstrated that MOS supplementation in high carbohydrate diet could regulate glucose and lipid homeostasis which may be related to the alteration of gut microbiota. These findings shed light on the application of prebiotics to increase the growth performance, alleviate the metabolic disorders and regulate inflammatory response in aquaculture.

Abstract
Prebiotic and probiotic supplements can directly activate fish primary defense mechanisms by acting on responsible receptors. This study aimed to investigate the effect of using Pediococcus acidilactici and Agaricus bisporus separately and in combination with silver carp's mucosal immune system indices and finally the possibility of reducing the toxicity of silver nanoparticles in silver carp. After calculating LC50, the sub-lethal toxicity test was performed to sub-lethal concentration of silver nanoparticles for 14 days. Fish skin mucus was collected in polyethylene bags containing 10 ml of 50 mM sodium chloride for future analysis. Results of skin mucosal indices activity showed significant changes in treatments fed with additives compared to the control treatment after exposure to silver nanoparticles on days 1, 7, and 14 in including lysozyme enzyme activity, total protein, and skin mucosal protein pattern. The addition of additives will improve the relative mucosal safety indices of silver carp. The results of statistical analysis showed that the addition of combination supplements, Pediococous acidilactici, and Agaricus bisporus powder could affect the skin mucosal safety indices. It is effective and ultimately improves the immune system function of silver carp skin in 14-day exposure to silver nanoparticles.

Abstract
Probiotics have been used to alleviate disease transmission in aquaculture. However, there are limited studies on probiotic use in modulating tilapia lake virus (TiLV). We assessed commercially available probiotic supplements used in TiLV-infected tilapia and performed mortality and cohabitation assays. We developed a mechanistic approach to predict dose-response interactions of probiotic effects on mortality and immune gene response. We used a susceptible-infected-mortality disease model to assess key epidemiological parameters such as transmission rate and basic reproduction number (R0 ) based on our viral load dynamic data. We found that the most marked benefits of probiotics are significantly associated with immune system enhancements (~30%) and reductions in disease transmission (~80%) and R0 (~70%) in tilapia populations, resulting in a higher tolerance of farming densities (~400 fold) in aquaculture. These findings provide early insights as to how probiotic use-related factors may influence TiLV transmission and the immune responses in TiLV-infected tilapia. Our study facilitates understanding the mode of action of probiotics in disease containment and predicting better probiotic dosages in diet and supplements to achieve the optimal culturing conditions. Overall, our analysis assures that further study of rationally designed and targeted probiotics, or mechanistic modelling is warranted on the basis of promising early data of this approach.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary fructooligosaccharides (FOS) on the growth, survival rate, digestive enzyms activity, and the expression of intestinal barrier function genes in tropical gar (Atractosteus tropicus) larvae. A total of 960 larvae (0.030 ± 0.006 g) were fed three diets supplemented with increasing FOS concentrations (2.5, 5, and 7.5 g kg−1) and a control diet for 15 days. Results revealed that a 7.5 g kg−1 FOS supplementation improved weight gain, specific growth rate, and survival rate (p < 0.05). Furthermore, 5 g kg−1 FOS supplementation increased alkaline protease and amylase activities and induced an upregulation of the claudin-17 gene expression (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, the inclusion of 7.5 g kg−1 FOS induced the upregulation of mucin 2 (muc-2), and the tight junction genes zo-2 and claudin-3 (p < 0.05). In addition, 2.5, 5, and 7.5 g kg−1 FOS promoted the downregulation of the claudin-15 gene expression (p < 0.05). At the same time, FOS inclusion did not increase the pro-inflammatory cytokine il-8 expression. We can conclude that 7.5 g kg−1 FOS supplementation improves growth performance, survival rate, and digestive capacity, and could contribute to the reinforcement of the intestinal barrier function of Tropical gar larvae.

Abstract
Most probiotic yeast supplement in fish exhibit beneficial effect at ≤1% of the dietary proportion. This study aimed at evaluating the specific effects of Lypomyces starkeyi CB1807 yeast strain supplemented at ≤1% of dietary proportion on the performance of juvenile red sea bream (Pagrus major, 1.9 ± 0.04 g). Five diets were supplemented with yeast at graded levels of 0% (Control diet ‘CD1’), 0.05% (D2), 0.1% (D3), 0.5% (D4), and 1.0% (D5). After 45-days of feeding trial, significant (P<0.05) improvement was detected on final body weight (FBW) and body weight gain (BWG) in fish fed D3 and D5 compared to control. Low values of total cholesterol (T-Cho) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were recorded in fish groups fed on D2, D4, and D5, respectively. Fish fed on D3, D4 and D5 diets showed high (P<0.05) values of serum, mucus and liver lysozyme compared to control. Fish fed on D5 showed high values of Total immunoglobulin (Ig) compared to control. Fish fed on D2 showed strong correlation with biological antioxidant activity (BAP), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase activity (CAT). The biological antioxidant potential (BAP) activity in fish fed on D2 was significantly higher compared to control (P<0.05). The reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROM) were significantly lower in fish fed on D2 and D3 compared to CD1 (P<0.05). Peroxidase activity was improved significantly (P<0.05) in fish fed on D3, D4 and D5 compared to control. The tolerance ability (LT50) of fish fed on D5 against low salinity stress were significantly higher compared to control (P<0.05). It was concluded that dietary benefits of spent L. starkeyi yeast at ≤1% showed considerable improvement in antioxidant capacity in red sea bream, P. major.

Abstract
White leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is a widely cultured species along the Pacific coast and is one of the most important crustaceans in world aquaculture. The microbiome composition of L. vannamei has been previously studied in different developmental stages, but there is limited information regarding the functional role of the microbiome during the development of L. vannamei. In this study the metatranscriptome in different developmental stages of L. vannamei (larvae, juvenile and adult) were generated using next generation sequencing techniques. The bacterial phyla found throughout all the stages of development belonged to the Proteobacteria, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, these bacterial phyla are present in the digestive tract and are capable of producing several hydrolytic enzymes, which agrees with high representation of the primary metabolism and energy production, in both host and the microbiome. In this sense, functional changes were observed as the development progressed, in both host and the microbiome, in stages of larvae the most represented metabolic functions were associated with biomass production; while in juvenile and adult stages a higher proportion of metabolic functions associated to biotic and abiotic stress in L. vannamei and the microbiome were shown. This study provides evidence of the interaction of the microbiome with L. vannamei, and how the stage of development and the culture conditions of this species influences the gene expression and the microbiome composition, which suggests a complex metabolic network present throughout the life cycle of L. vannamei.

Abstract
Aquaculture plays an increasingly significant role in improving the sustainability of global fish production. This sector has been intensified with the advent of new husbandry practices and the development of new technology. However, the increasing intensification and indiscriminate commercialized farming has enhanced the vulnerability of cultivated aquatic species to damage from pathogens. In efforts to confront these various diseases, frequent use of drugs, antibiotics, chemotherapeutics, and agents for sterilization have unintentionally added to the risk of transmission of pathogens and harmful chemical compounds to consumers. Some natural dietary supplements are believed to have the potential to offset this setback in aquaculture. Application of bio-friendly feed additives such as probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics are becoming popular dietary supplements with the potential to not only improve growth performance, but in some cases can also enhance immune competence and the overall well-being of fish and crustaceans. The present review discusses and summarizes the effects of probiotics, prebiotics and synbiotics application on growth, stress mitigation, microbial composition of intestine, immune system and health condition of aquatic animals in association with existing constraints and future perspectives in aquaculture.

Abstract
Perfluorobutanesulfonate (PFBS) is an emerging pollutant of international concern, which is found to impair the early embryonic development of fishes. In the context of ubiquitous and persistent pollution, it is necessary to explore mitigatory strategies against the developmental toxicity of PFBS. In this study, zebrafish larvae were acutely exposed to 0, 1, 3.3 and 10 mg/L of PFBS till 168 h post-fertilization (hpf), during which probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus bacteria were administered via the exposure media. After the singular or combined exposure, interaction between PFBS and probiotics on the growth of zebrafish larvae was measured. PFBS exposure significantly decreased the larval body weight, weight gain and specific growth rate, while probiotic supplementation efficiently inhibited the growth retardation caused by PFBS. Furthermore, PFBS and probiotic combinations remarkably activated the antioxidant capacity to timely scavenge the reactive oxidative species and protect the larvae from lipid peroxidation. Biochemical assay and fluorescent staining verified that PFBS exposure significantly promoted the production of bile acids, which were further enhanced by the probiotics. In coexposed zebrafish larvae, up-regulation of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPARb) would enhance the β-oxidation of fatty acids to meet the energy demand from larval growth, subsequently decreasing fatty acid concentrations. In addition, probiotic supplements masked the dysbiosis of PFBS and potently shaped the gut microbiota, which closely modulated the production of bile acids. Overall, the present findings underline the beneficial effects of probiotics to protect the developing larvae from the aquatic toxicities of PFBS, thus highlighting the potential application values of probiotic recipe in aquaculture and ecological reservation.

Abstract
An exopolysaccharide (EPS) synthesizing potentially probiotic Gram-positive bacterial strain was isolated from fish (Tor putitora) gut, and its EPS was structurally characterized. The isolate, designated as FW2, was identified as Lactobacillus reuteri through 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. This isolate produces fructan-type EPS using sucrose as a substrate. Based on 13C-NMR spectroscopy, methylation analysis and monosaccharide composition, the EPS was identified as a linear levan polymer with fructose as main constituent linked via β(2 → 6) linkages. Based on molecular weight (MW) distribution, two groups of levan were found to be produced by the isolate FW2: one with high MW (4.6 × 106 Da) and the other having much lower MW (1.2 × 104 Da). The isolate yielded about 14 g/L levan under optimized culturing parameters including aeration conditions, pH, temperature and substrate concentration. The obtained bimodal molecular weight linear levan is the first of its type to be synthesized by a L. reuteri isolate from fish gut. Bimodal molecular weight prebiotic levan together with the probiotic potential of the producing strain would provide a new promising synbiotic combination for use in aqua culture.

Abstract
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a global foodborne bacterial pathogen that is often accountable for colon disorder or distress. STEC commonly induces severe diarrhea in hosts but can cause critical illnesses due to the Shiga toxin virulence factors. To date, there have been a significant number of STEC serotypes have been evolved. STECs vary from nausea and hemorrhoid (HC) to possible lethal hemolytic-based uremic syndrome (HUS), thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Inflammation-based STEC is usually a foodborne illness with Shiga toxins (Stx 1 and 2) thought to be pathogenesis. The STEC's pathogenicity depends significantly on developing one or more Shiga toxins, which can constrain host cell protein synthesis leading to cytotoxicity. In managing STEC infections, antimicrobial agents are generally avoided, as bacterial damage and discharge of accumulated toxins are thought the body. It has also been documented that certain antibiotics improve toxin production and the development of these species. Many different groups have attempted various therapies, including toxin-focused antibodies, toxin-based polymers, synbiotic agents, and secondary metabolites remedies. Besides, in recent years, antibiotics' efficacy in treating STEC infections has been reassessed with some encouraging methods. Nevertheless, the primary role of synbiotic effectiveness (probiotic and prebiotic) against pathogenic STEC and other enteropathogens is less recognized. Additional studies are required to understand the mechanisms of action of probiotic bacteria and yeast against STEC infection. Because of the consensus contraindication of antimicrobials for these bacterial pathogens, the examination was focused on alternative remedy strategies for STEC infections. The rise of novel STEC serotypes and approaches employed in its treatment are highlighted.

Study on growth enhancement and the protective effects of dietary prebiotic inulin on immunity responses of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) fry infected with Aeromonas hydrophila. Abstract
The present study evaluated the effects of dietary inulin on growth performance, body composition, serum, biochemical, and mucus immune factors; as well as innate immune responses of rainbow trout fry challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. Four diets were prepared using a commercially available fish feed as a basal diet and different levels of prebiotic inulin incorporation; 0 (control), 1, 2, and 3%; referred to as C, T1, T2, and T3, respectively. The findings of the 60-day feeding trial showed that inulin inclusion affected final weight, food conversion rate (FCR), and specific growth rate (SGR) compared to that of the control group (P < 0.05), in which the lowest FCR was observed in T3. Body composition analysis revealed that inulin significantly increased protein content and decreased lipid levels, especially in the T1 and T2 groups. The lowest ash level was noticed in T2 (P < 0.05). Blood total protein, albumin, globulin, cholesterol, and glucose were not affected by inulin supplementation (P > 0.05). Analysis of humoral immune responses showed that the inulin supplements significantly increased lysozyme and complement activities (P < 0.05), as well as higher red blood cell count (RBC) and hemoglobin (Hb) in fish, fed 2% inulin, while no significant differences were observed among other treatments (P > 0.05). The mucosal parameters; including lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase (excluding ACH50); protease activities; and total immunoglobulin (IgM) improved significantly (P < 0.05), particularly in the T2 group. The T2 group also demonstrated the highest survival rate among all groups. The present findings indicate that dietary administration of inulin promotes growth and biochemical parameters, as well as serum immunity and mucosal immune responses of rainbow trout, in which a 2% inclusion produced the best results.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) supplementation intake of Taiping chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) and its stimulating effects on ileum. 120 healthy chickens were randomly divided into two groups; control group (CT) and fructo-oligosaccharides group (FOS). At the 60th day of age, ileum mucosa of three chickens per group were collected and performed transcriptome profiling of Taiping chicken ileum mucosa using the Hiseq™ 2500 sequencing platform. Compared with CT group, 50 genes were differentially expressed in the FOS group. Ten of the differently expressed genes were further validated by RT-qPCR. In addition, gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes analyses revealed that these differentially expressed genes were mainly enriched to drug metabolism-cytochrome P450, metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, retinol metabolism, fat digestion and absorption, herpes simplex infection and valine, leucine and isoleucine biosynthesis. The results of this study provided the help to our understanding application of fructo-oligosaccharides in indigenous chicken production and provide a theoretical basis for the genetic development of indigenous chickens.

Abstract
The olfactory function and imprinting of odorant information of the native stream play a critical role during the homing migration in fish. Pesticides may impair olfactory imprinting by altering olfaction and hormone functions. The present study aimed to determine how diazinon impacts olfactory epithelium morphology and cell composition, as well as hormone concentrations in Persian sturgeon (Acipenser persicus) during their lifetime in freshwater and, also during diazinon-free saltwater acclimation. Fingerlings were exposed to 0, 150, 300, and 450 μg·L-1 of diazinon in freshwater for 7 days and then were transferred to diazinon-free saltwater by gradually increasing salinity up to 12 ppt. After diazinon exposure, the number of olfactory receptor cells (ORCs) and goblet cells (GCs) decreased and increased, respectively, and the expression of G-protein αolf (GPαolf) and calmodulin-dependent kinase II delta (CAMKIId) was down-regulated and up-regulated, respectively. Transferring the fish to diazinon-free saltwater (8 and 12 ppt) raised the number of ORCs, supporting cells (SCs), GCs, and GPαolf expression, and down-regulated CAMKIId without any significant differences among treatments. Exposure to diazinon increased whole-body cortisol at the high concentration, while decreased whole-body thyroxin (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in a dose-dependent manner. Although whole-body T4 and T3 increased in all the treatments after saltwater acclimation (8 and 12 ppt), the level of these hormones was lower in fish that had been exposed to diazinon than in the control. These results showed that diazinon can disrupt olfactory epithelium morphology and cell composition as well as hormone concentrations, which in turn may affect the olfactory imprinting in Persian sturgeon fingerlings.

Abstract
Dragon fruit oligosaccharide (DFO) is an indigestible prebiotic. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effects of DFO on gut microbiota, oxidative stress and immune-related gene expression in Daphnia magna. The 10-day-old D. magna were treated with 0, 9, and 27 mg l-1 DFO for 85 h. The gut bacterial communities, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, lipid peroxidation and the expressions of genes in Toll signaling pathway were observed. The results showed that D. magna treated with 9 and 27 mg l-1 DFO altered gut microbiota composition by increasing Limnohabitans and Lactobacillus, and significantly increased SOD activity and reduced lipid peroxidation. Moreover, the expressions of Toll2, Toll3, Toll5, Toll7 and Pelle genes were significantly increased in D. magna treated with 9 and 27 mg l-1 DFO. Our results suggested that DFO changed the composition of the gut microbiota of D. magna by increasing the beneficial bacteria. DFO also had the ability to stimulate innate immunity in D. magna by increasing SOD activity, reducing lipid peroxidation, and increasing the expression of immune-related genes.

Abstract
AbstractFish gut microbiome confers various effects to the host fish; this includes overall size, metabolism, feeding behaviour and immune response in the fish. The emergence of antimicrobial‐resistant (AMR) bacteria and hard to cure fish diseases warrant the possible utilization of gut microbes that exhibits a positive effect on the fish and thus lead to the usage of these microbes as probiotics. The widespread and systematic use of antibiotics has led to severe biological and ecological problems, especially the development of antibiotic resistance that affects the gut microbiota of aquatic organisms. Probiotics are proposed as an effective and environmentally friendly alternative to antibiotics, known as beneficial microbes. At the same time, prebiotics are considered beneficial to the host's health and growth by decreasing the prevalence of intestinal pathogens and/or changing the development of bacterial metabolites related to health. Uprise of sequencing technology and the development of intricate bioinformatics tools has provided a way to study these gut microbes through metagenomic analysis. From various metagenomic studies, ample of information was obtained; such information includes the effect of the gut microbiome on the physiology of fish, gut microbe composition of different fish, factors affecting the gut microbial composition of the fish and the immunological effect of gut microbes in fish; such this information related to the fish gut microbiome, their function and their importance in aquaculture is discussed in this review.

Abstract
Growth behavior and production of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) of two probiotics, Pediococcus acidilactici and Lactococcus lactis, each at 107 cfu/g (P1, L1) and 1010 cfu/g (P2, L2) at different concentrations of fructooligosaccharide (FOS) [0.5% (F1), 1% (F2), and 2% (F3)] were assessed in vitro. The time to reach the maximum growth of the probiotics in all 12 treatments was between 8 to 10 h, with the highest and the lowest growth rates obtained in F1L1P1 (0.34 ± 0.02 OD) and F3L1P1 (0.31 ± 0.05 OD) treatments, respectively. The shortest and the longest generation times were seen in F1L1P1 (112 ± 1.5 min) and F2L1P1 (231 ± 0.5 min) treatments, respectively. The highest and the lowest levels of SCFA production were found in F1L1P1 (17.94 ± 0.74 mg/L) and F3L1P1 (12.98 ± 0.85 mg/L) treatments, respectively. The three synbiotics with the highest SCFA production were then fed to Caspian roach (Rutilus frisii kutum) fry weighing 0.75 ± 0.02 g at 28 °C for 60 days, to assess growth performance and enzymatic activity. The best growth performance in terms of weight gain (WG), protein efficiency ratio (PER), net protein utilization (NPU), and food conversion ratio (FCR) were seen with F1L1P1. In addition, the highest activity levels of the digestive enzymes chymotrypsin, lipase, and amylase were obtained with F1P1L1. The correlation of these in vitro and in vivo data demonstrated that oral application of these two probiotics each at 107 cfu/g feed plus 0.5% FOS can improve growth and gut enzyme activity of Caspian roach fry.

Abstract
In aquaculture and human health care probiotics and prebiotics have been widely used due to their important role in enhancing beneficial gut microbiota, promoting growth, increasing disease resistance, and positively modulating the host immune system. This study reports for the first time a comparative analysis on the effect of the probiotics and prebiotics on growth, digestive enzymes activity, antioxidant activity, and immune response in Channa punctatus against Aphanomyces invadans. Among the diets enriched with Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) and Galactooligosaccharide (GOS) in C. punctatus, feeding 2.5 g kg-1 diet did not significantly influence the mean weight gain (MWG) between weeks 2 and 4 in both the infected and control groups; however the increase in MWG became significant from weeks 6-8. Similarly, during this period the protein efficiency ratio (PER), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein intake (PI) did not increase significantly. The intestinal protease, lipase, and amylase enzyme activities also did not increase significantly between weeks 2 and 4, whereas the values increased significantly after 6 weeks in both groups when fed with dietary supplementation of S. cerevisiae and GOS. The total S. cerevisiae count significantly increased in the gut of infected and non-infected fish fed with S. cerevisiae and GOS diets while the total bacterial (TB) count decreased between weeks 6 and 8. The total superoxide dismutase (t-SOD) activity and the malonaldehyde (MDA) concentration increased significantly in the non-infected fish fed with S. cerevisiae and GOS supplementation diets between weeks 6 and 8 whereas the catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities increased significantly only on week 8. The innate immune parameters such as plasma lysozyme, acid phosphatase (ACP), and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities increased significantly in the infected and non-infected fish fed with S. cerevisiae and GOS containing diets after 6 weeks. Similarly, the plasma nitric oxide (NO) level and total protein (TP) content significantly increased in the non-infected fish fed with S. cerevisiae and GOS containing diets between weeks 6 and 8. In the control and the non-infected fish fed with S. cerevisiae and GOS enriched diets caused no mortality whereas 15% and 10% mortality was observed in the infected fish fed with S. cerevisiae and GOS diets, respectively. This study indicates that the infected and non-infected C. punctatus fed with dietary supplementation of GOS diet at 2.5 g kg-1 had exhibited better growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, gut microbiota composition, and immune response than that of S. cerevisiae diet.

Abstract
Synbiotics, a synergistic combination of probiotics and prebiotics, are currently regarded as one of the most practical nutritional supplements in tilapia farms. In this study, the effect of supplementing the diet of red tilapia (Oreochromis spp.) with Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus) and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) was evaluated. Growth performance, serum biochemical parameters, intestinal morphology, goblet cell counts, immune parameters and protection against Aeromonas veronii challenge were determined. The results showed that fish fed with synbiotic-supplemented diets had a significantly higher (P < 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR), specific growth rate (SGR), and average daily gain (ADG) than fish fed with a control diet. The synbiotic-supplemented diet increased glucose, total protein and the total cholesterol levels. The absorptive area of the proximal and distal intestine of fish fed on the synbiotic diet was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than in those fed with probiotics (LGG), prebiotic-supplemented diets (JA), and the control diet. Goblet cell counts revealed that the numbers of acid mucous cells, neutral mucous cells and double-staining mucous cells of fish fed the synbiotic-supplemented diet (JA + LGG) were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in the proximal and distal intestine. Fish fed the synbiotic-supplemented diets also exhibited significantly higher (P < 0.05) lysozyme activity. The cumulative mortalities of fish fed with a synbiotic-supplemented diet were significantly lower than those of fish fed other diets. The results suggested the beneficial effect of JA and LGG synbiotic diet on growth performance and health status of red tilapia. Direct administration of JA and LGG in fish feed can be used as a practical nutritional supplement in red tilapia.

Abstract
The microorganisms within the intestinal tract (termed gut microbiota) have been shown to interact with the gut-brain axis, a bidirectional communication system between the gut and the brain mediated by hormonal, immune, and neural signals. Through these interactions, the microbiota might affect behaviors, including feeding behavior, digestive/absorptive processes (e.g., by modulating intestinal motility and the intestinal barrier), metabolism, as well as the immune response, with repercussions on the energy homeostasis and health of the host. To date, research in this field has mostly focused on mammals. Studies on non-mammalian models such as fish may provide novel insights into the specific mechanisms involved in the microbiota-brain-gut axis. This review describes our current knowledge on the possible effects of microbiota on feeding, digestive processes, growth, and energy homeostasis in fish, with emphasis on the influence of brain and gut hormones, environmental factors, and inter-specific differences.

Abstract
An 8-week feeding trial was carried out under controlled condition to evaluate the effect of dietary fructooligosaccharide (FOS) on growth performance, whole body composition, antioxidant status and immunity of crabs fed high levels of plant protein diets. Thus, six experimental diets were formulated (designated as F0P50, F0P60, F0P70, F0.2P50, F0.2P60 and F0.2P70), which contain two FOS levels (0 or 0.2%) and three plant protein levels (50, 60, or 70%) according to a 2 × 3 factorial design. The results showed that weight gain increased significantly as dietary plant protein level decreased from 70% to 50%. At 50% plant protein level, the addition of 0.2% FOS can significantly elevate weight gain (WG) (P < 0.05). The highest value in survival rate was observed in crabs fed F0.2P50 and F0.2P60 diet. Crabs fed F0.2P50 diet showed significantly higher crude protein content (P < 0.05) compared with those in other groups, but there were no significant differences in the contents of moisture, crude lipid and ash among all groups (P > 0.05). Catalase (CAT) activity in crabs fed F0.2P50 increased significantly (P < 0.05) compared with crabs fed F0P60, F0P70, F0.2P60 and F0.2P70, but malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations decreased significantly (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, nitric oxide (NO) concentration, acid phosphatase (ACP) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activities of crabs fed 0.2% FOS diets increased significantly (P < 0.05) compared with crabs fed 0% FOS diets. The expressions of prophenoloxidase (propo) was significantly (P < 0.05) affected only by dietary plant protein levels with the highest values observed in 50% plant protein diet, whereas the opposite was true for Myeloid differentiation factor 88 (myd88). The mRNA expressions of mitochondrial manganese superoxide dismutase (mtmnsod), lipopolysaccharide-induced TNF-α factor (litaf) and toll like receptors (tlrs) were significantly affected (P < 0.05) by both FOS and plant protein levels. The cytosolic manganese superoxide dismutase (cytmnsod) mRNA expressions in F0.2P50 and F0.2P60 groups were significantly higher than those in F0P70 and F0.2P70 groups. The results in this study indicated that supplementation with 0.2% FOS can enhance growth performance in crabs fed lower plant protein diets and as well improve immunity in those fed with higher plant protein diets.

Abstract
Along with the intensification of culture systems to meet the increasing global demands, there was an elevated risk for diseases outbreak and substantial loss for farmers. In view of several drawbacks caused by prophylactic administration of antibiotics, strict regulations have been established to ban or minimize their application in aquaculture. As an alternative to antibiotics, dietary administration of feed additives has received increasing attention during the past three decades. Probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics and medicinal plants were among the most promising feed supplements for control or treatments of bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases of fish and shellfish. The present review summarizes and discusses the topic of potential application of probiotics as a means of disease control with comprehensive look at the available literature. The possible mode of action of probiotics (Strengthening immune response, competition for binding sites, production of antibacterial substances, and competition for nutrients) in providing protection against diseases is described. Besides, we have classified different pathogens and separately described the effects of probiotics as protective strategy. Furthermore, we have addressed the gaps of existing knowledge as well as the topics that merit further investigations. Overall, the present review paper revealed potential of different probiont to be used as protective agent against various pathogens.

Abstract
ABSTRACT A study was conducted to investigate the effect of Dietary Fiber Concentrates (DFCs) on growth performance, gut morphology, and hepatic metabolic intermediates in jundiá (Rhamdia quelen). At the end of the trial, growth and intestinal villus height was significantly (P< 0.05) higher in fish fed diets supplemented with DFCs. However, the animals in commercial prebiotic group showed higher values for this variable compared to the other treatments. Regarding the thickness of the epithelium bowel, it was greater in the Control group compared to animals supplemented with β-glucan+mannan. Likewise, treatment with commercial prebiotic showed higher values of epithelium bowel compared to the DFCs. The fish supplemented with DFCs, had higher glycogen storage compared to the control group. These results indicate that DFCs can be considered as a beneficial dietary supplement for improving growth performance, gut morphology, and hepatic metabolic intermediates of jundiá.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Fish culture in rice paddies can contribute to increasing yields of rice and surplus fish products. Environmental impacts and food-safety issues have become important topics in aquaculture, and organic foods currently were paid attention by researchers and industry practitioners. But the mechanism of differences in quality of Loach (Paramisgurnus dabryanus) reared in rice fields and ponds remains largely uncharacterized. In this study,digestive enzyme activity, intestinal mucosa cells and the gut microbial community of loach were determined under the two separate cultivation modes. RESULTS The levels of intestinal digestive enzyme activity of fish reared in the paddy-cultivated mode (PACM) were higher (P < 0.05) than those in the pond-cultivated mode (POCM). It was extremely significant (P < 0.01) for the activity of lipase in the liver, foregut and midgut, and for the activities of amylase and trypsin in the hindgut. Acid mucous cells in the loach foregut in PACM were fewer than in POCM (P < 0.01). In summer, the abundance of the Firmicutes, Lactobacillus spp., Aeromonas hydrophila, Enterobacteriaceae and Streptococcus spp. in loach intestinal mucosa in PACM was higher than in POCM. In fall, the abundance of total bacteria, the Bacteroidetes, Bifidobacterium and Enterobacteriaceae in the intestinal mucosa in PACM was likewise higher than in POCM. These differences were significant (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01) between loach in the two separate culture modes for all microorganisms except for A. hydrophila and Streptococcus spp. In addition, quantitative PCR assays showed that some microorganisms presented consistently similar abundances in the gut as in the culture water. CONCLUSIONS These results showed some enzymatic activities involved in digestion in liver and intestine of loach in PACM were higher than those in POCM, as using digestive enzyme analysis and histological observation of intestinal sections. These findings suggest most of the microorganisms examined in the gut mucosa of loach in the two culture modes significantly differed in abundance between summer and fall. However, some pathogenic bacteria in the gut, particularly A. hydrophila, presented lower abundance in PACM in fall, yet did not differ in abundance between loach in the two cultivation modes.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of single or combined administration of dietary fermentable fiber (Vitacel®) and probiotic PrimaLac® on mucosal immune parameters, digestive enzyme activity, gut microbiota and growth performance of Caspian white fish (Rutilus frisii kutum) fingerlings. Fish were transferred to laboratory, acclimatized for two weeks and then fish (0.56 ± 0.026 g) were allocated into 12 tanks (30 fish per tank). Triplicate groups were fed a basal diet (Control) or basal diet supplemented with fermentable fiber [Vitacel®] (FF), probiotic [PrimaLac®] (P) and combined fermentable fiber and probiotic (FF + P). At the end of feeding trial, growth performance and feed utilization parameters were significantly (P < 0.05) improved in FF, P and FF + P treatments compared control group. Evaluation of digestive enzyme activity revealed significant (P < 0.05) increase of lipase activity in fish fed supplemented diet. However, amylase, protease and alkaline phosphatase were significantly higher (P < 0.05) only in P and FF + P treatments. Furthermore, total autochthonous intestinal microbiota and autochthonous LAB levels significantly increased in fish fed supplemented diet (P < 0.05). Also, inclusion of FF, P and FF + P in Caspian white fish diet remarkably increased skin mucus immune parameters compared control group (P < 0.05). These results indicate that singular or combined administration of FF and P can be considered as a beneficial dietary supplement for early stages of Caspian white fish (Rutilus fresii kutumn) culture.

Abstract
The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of dietary taurine (Tau) on performance, digestive enzymes, antioxidant activity, and resistance of common carp, Cyprinus carpio L., fry to salinity stress. Fish (0.97 ± 0.033 g) were fed on different taurine levels of 0.0 (control), 5, 10, 15, or 20 g/kg diet up to satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, fish were stressed by exposure to 10 ppt salinity for 3 days during which fish mortality was observed. Fish performance was significantly (P < 0.05) improved by dietary taurine up to 15 g Tau/kg diet after which fish growth and feed intake were almost the same. Also, taurine supplementation significantly (P < 0.05) elevated activities of intestinal amylase, lipase, and protease resulting in an improving in feed intake giving better performance. Furthermore, Tau-stimulated antioxidant activity of common carp was observed in a dose-related manner, where activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were significantly (P < 0.05) higher, but malondialdehyde (MDA) value was significantly (P < 0.05) lower in Tau-fed fish groups than those fed the control diet. In salinity stress experiment, highest survival rate was observed at fish fed Tau-supplemented diets without significant (P > 0.05) differences over fish fed the control diet. It appears that taurine could be used as a feed supplement to confer better growth and health of common carp fry with optimal level of 15 g/kg diet.

Abstract
The present study was performed to investigate the effects of single or combined administration of galactooligosaccharide (GOS) and Pediococcus acidilactici on cutaneous mucus immune parameters, humoral immune responses and immune related genes expression in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) fingerlings. Carps were fed experimental diets for 8 weeks as follows: non-supplemented (Control), prebiotic diet (10 g/kg GOS), probiotic diet (1 g/kg [0.9 × 107 CFU] lyophilized P. acidilactici) and synbiotic diet (10 GOS in combination with 1 g/kg [0.9 × 107 CFU] lyophilized P. acidilactici). Unlike skin mucus, the serum lysozyme activity showed no significant difference between carps fed supplemented or control diets, however, remarkable elevation of serum ACH50 activity was noticed in carps fed supplemented diet (pro-, pre- and synbiotic diets) compared control group. Besides, feeding on pro-, pre- and synbiotic supplemented diets significantly increased serum and skin mucus total Ig levels. However, no significant difference was observed between treatments and control group in case of skin mucus proteases activity. There was no significant difference between expression levels of intestinal genes of LYZ and IL1b in fish fed on pre- and synbiotic, compared to the control. However, evaluation of TNF-alpha gene expression in the intestine of carps revealed remarkable down-regulation in treated groups (p < 0.05). These results indicated positive effect of supplementation of carp diet with GOS and P. acidilactici on some mucosal or serum immune parameters.

Abstract
Soybean is well known for its high-value oil and protein. Carbohydrate is, however, an underutilized major component, representing almost 26-30% (w/w) of the dried bean. The complex soybean carbohydrate is not easily hydrolyzable and can cause indigestibility when included in food and feed. Enzymes can be used to hydrolyze the carbohydrate for improving soybean processing and value of soybean products. Here the enzyme-based processing developed for the following purposes is reviewed: hydrolysis of different carbohydrate-rich by/products from soybean processing, improvement of soybean oil extraction, and increase of nutritional value of soybean-based food and animal feed. Once hydrolyzed into fermentable sugars, soybean carbohydrate can find more value-added applications and further improve the overall economics of soybean processing.

Abstract
Dietary administration of immunostimulants showed promising results for elevation of immune responses and disease resistance. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of dietary Pontogammarus (Pontogammarus maeoticus) extract on innate immune response, stress resistance, feed intake and growth performance of the Caspian roach fingerling. Two levels of P. maeoticus extract dilution with distilled water 1:25 [T1] and 1:50 [T2] were prepared. Experimental diets were prepared by top-spraying the basal diet with equal amount (2%) of diluted extracts. One hundred and eighty Caspian roach fingerlings (4.30 ± 0.10 g) were supplied, stocked in nine 100-L tanks (three treatment repeated in triplicates) and fed on experimental diets for 8 weeks. At the end of the trial, serum innate immune parameters (Total Ig, ACH50, and lysozyme activity), resistance against salinity stress, feed intake and growth parameters were measured. The results revealed remarkable increase of innate immune parameters and resistance against salinity stress in roach fed P. maeoticus extracts (P < 0.05). Also, growth performance and food intake were notably improved in P. maeoticus extracts fed fish (P < 0.05). These results revealed beneficial effects of P. maeoticus extract on innate immune response, resistance, feed intake as well as growth performance of the Caspian roach.

Abstract
The present study evaluates the effects of dietary kefir and low molecular weight sodium alginate (LWMSA) (singular or combined) on non-specific immune response, disease resistance and growth performance of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). Fish with average weight of 18.60 ± 0.04 g were supplied and randomly stocked in sixteen glass tanks (150 L) at density of 20 fish per tank. Fish were fed experimental diets as follows: 0 g kg-1 LMWSA (Control, Diet 1), 10 g kg-1 LMWSA (Diet 2), 40 g kg-1 kefir (Diet 3), and 10 g kg-1 LMWSA + 40 g kg-1 kefir (Diet 4) for 50 days. At the end of the feeding trial, serum lysozyme (SL), phagocytosis (PI), respiratory burst (RB), and alternative complement (ACH50) activities as well as growth performance were measured. Singular and combined administration of kefir and low molecular weight sodium alginate (LMWSA) significantly increased serum SL, PI, RB, and ACH50 activities compared control group (P < 0.05); the highest innate immune responses were observed in fish fed combinational diet (kefir + LMWSA) (P < 0.05). The results of experimental challenge revealed significantly higher resistance against Streptococcus agalactiae in fish fed supplemented diets and the highest post challenge survival rate was observed in synbiotic diet (P < 0.05). Similar results obtained in case of growth parameters. Feeding on supplemented diet significantly improved SGR and FCR and the highest growth parameters was observed in fish fed synbiotic diet (P < 0.05). These finding revealed that combined administration of dietary kefir and LMWSA can be considered for improving immune response, disease resistance and growth performance of Nile tilapia.

Abstract
Environmental stressors caused by inadequate aquaculture management strategies suppress the immune response of fish and make them more susceptible to diseases. Therefore, efforts have been made to relieve stress in fish by using various functional feed additives in the diet, including probiotics. The present work evaluates the effects of Lactobacillus rhamnosus (LR) on physiological stress response, blood chemistry and mucus secretion of red sea bream (Pagrus major) under low salinity stress. Fish were fed four diets supplemented with LR at [0 (LR0), 1 × 102 (LR1), 1 × 104 (LR2) and 1 × 106 (LR3) cells g-1] for 56 days. Before stress, blood cortisol, urea nitrogen (BUN) and total bilirubin (T-BIL) showed no significant difference (P > 0.05), whereas plasma glucose and triglyceride (TG) of fish-fed LR2 and LR3 diets were significantly lower (P < 0.05) than those of the other groups. Plasma total cholesterol (T-CHO) of fish-fed LR3 diet was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that of the other groups. Furthermore, total plasma protein, mucus myeloperoxidase activity and the amount of mucus secretion were significantly enhanced in LR-supplemented groups when compared with the control group (P < 0.05). After the application of the low salinity stress test, plasma cortisol, glucose, T-CHO and TG contents in all groups showed an increased trend significantly (P < 0.01) compared to the fish before the stress challenge. However, plasma total protein and the amount of secreted mucus showed a decreased trend in all groups. On the other hand, BUN, T-BIL and mucus myeloperoxidase activity showed no significant difference after exposure to the low salinity stress (P > 0.05). In addition, the fish that received LR-supplemented diets showed significantly higher tolerance against low salinity stress than the fish-fed LR-free diet (P < 0.05). The physiological status and the detected immune responses, including total plasma protein and mucus myeloperoxidase activity in red sea bream, will provide a more comprehensive outlook of the effects of probiotics to relieve stress in fish.

Abstract
The study used the mixed probiotics of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens 54A and B. pumilus 47B isolated from striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) intestine aiming to stimulate growth performance, innate immunity, stress tolerance of striped catfish. The average weight gain (AWG), specific growth rate (SGR), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were analyzed after fish were fed the mixture of probiotics (B. amyloliquefaciens 54A and B. pumilus 47B) at concentrations of 1 × 108, 3 × 108, and 5 × 108 CFU g-1 feed for 90 days. Immunity parameters, survival rate of fish challenged with Edwardsiella ictaluri and ammonia tolerance were also investigated. The amounts of B. amyloliquefaciens and B. pumilus were counted and identified by specific primer pairs of Ba1-F/Ba1-R, and 16-F/Bpu-R to confirm the presence of probiotics in fish intestine. The AWG (476.6 ± 7.81 g fish-1) of fish fed probiotics at 5 × 108 CFU g-1 was significant higher than the control (390 ± 25.7 g fish-1) after 90 days of feeding, but there was no significant (P > 0.05) effect of probiotics on FCR and SGR. Fish fed diet containing probiotics at 5 × 108 CFU g-1 also expressed resistance to E. ictaluri infection and higher immune parameters such as phagocytic activity, respiratory bursts, and lysozyme activity than the control. Stress response with ammonia showed significantly lower mortality rate (25%, 20% and 27%) of fish fed probiotics at all three levels of 1, 3 and 5 × 108 CFU g-1 than the fish fed control diet (75%). The study also demonstrated that the probiotics survived in the intestine of striped catfish after 90 days of feeding. Therefore, the dietary supplementation of a mixture of B. amyloliquefaciens and B. pumilus at 5 × 108 CFU g-1 can be used to improve the health and growth rate of striped catfish.

Abstract
Inclusion of prebiotics in aqua feeds, though a costly strategy, has increased as a means to improve growth. Still, its effects on health improvement are not fully disclosed. Regarding their immunestimulatory properties, research has focused on carbohydrates such as fructooligosaccharides and xylooligosaccharides demonstrating their modulatory effects on immune defences in higher vertebrates but few studies have been done on their impact on fish immunity. Replacing fish meal (FM) by plant protein (PP) sources is a current practice in the aquaculture business but their content in antinutrients is still a drawback in terms of gut well-functioning. This work intends to evaluate the short-term effect (7 or 15 days feeding the experimental diets) on juvenile European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) immune status of dietary i) replacement of FM by PP sources; ii) prebiotics supplementation. Six isoproteic (46%) and isolipidic (15%) diets were tested including a FM control diet (FMCTRL), a PP control diet (PPCTRL, 30 FM:70 PP) and four other diets based on either FM or PP to which short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS) or xylooligosaccharides (XOS) were added at 1% (FMFOS, PPFOS, FMXOS, PPXOS). The replacement of FM by PP in the diets induced nitric oxide (NO) and lysozyme production, while immunoglobulins (Ig), monocytes percentage and gut interleukin 10 (IL10) gene expression were inhibited. Dietary scFOS supplementation inhibited total bactericidal activity and neutrophils relative percentage regardless protein source and increased plasma NO and thrombocytes percentage in fish fed FM-based diets, while monocytes percentage was increased in PPFOS-fed fish. XOS supplementation down-regulated immune gene expression in the gut while it partly enhanced systemic response. Inconsistency among results regarding FM replacement by PP-based ingredients exposes the need for further research considering both local and systemic responses. Distinct outcomes of prebiotic supplementation were highlighted reflecting sight-specific effects with no clear interaction with protein source.

Abstract
An eight-weeks feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of galactooligosaccharide (GOS), on the skin and serum non-specific immune parameters and growth performance of Caspian white fish (Rutilus frisii kutum) fry. Fish (2.07 ± 0.08 g) were fed different levels of GOS (0%, 1%, 2% and 3%). No significant (P > 0.05) difference was observed in mucus protease activity, but inclusion of 1% GOS significantly (P < 0.05) elevated total immunoglobulin (Ig) level and lysozyme activity. Evaluation of serum non-specific immune parameters revealed significant (P < 0.05) increase in serum total Ig and lysozyme activity of fish fed 1% or 2% GOS compared those of fish fed control diet. Furthermore, the serum alternative haemolytic complement activity (ACH50) was significantly (P < 0.05) elevated in all prebiotic groups regardless of inclusion levels. Administration of GOS in diet significantly (P < 0.05) improved growth performance and feed utilisation. The results of the present study revealed that GOS administration is beneficial by improving immune response and growth performance of Caspian white fish.

Abstract
Present study was carried out to evaluate the effects of low molecular weight sodium alginate (LMWSA) as potential prebiotic source on growth performance, innate immunity and disease resistance of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Three hundred twenty fish were divided into four treatments and fed following diets 0 (T1- Control), 10 (T2), 20 (T3) and 30 (T4) g kg(-1) LMWSA for period of 60 days. A Completely Randomized Design with four replications was applied. At the end of experiment, fish in each replication were weighed and specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated. Five randomly selected fish were used for innate immune response measurement. Another ten fish were randomly selected for challenge test against Streptococcus agalactiae for a period of 18 days. The lysozyme, complement, phagocytosis, and respiratory burst activities were detected after 60 days of feeding trial and after challenge test. The results indicated that fish fed diet 10 g kg(-1) LMWSA significantly improved SGR and FCR after 60 days of feeding trial. The lysozyme, phagocytosis, respiratory burst, and complement activities were significantly higher in fish fed LMWSA diets compared to control. Fish fed 10 g kg(-1) LMWSA had greatest values compared to fish fed 20 and 30 g kg(-1) LMWSA. The survival rate of O. niloticus was significantly improved in fish fed LMWSA diets after challenge with S. agalactiae for 18 days. However, no significant difference in survival rate was observed among LMWSA supplemented diets. It is indicated that fish fed 10, 20 and 30 g kg(-1) LMWSA diets can stimulate growth performance, innate immunity and disease resistance in tilapia against S. agalactiae.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of feeding on synbiotic (Pediococcus acidilactici and fructooligosaccharide) enriched adult Artemia franciscana on skin mucus immune responses, stress resistance, intestinal microbiota and growth performance of angelfish (Pterophyllum scalare). Three hundred and sixty fish with initial weight 3.2 ± 0.13 g were randomly divided into twelve aquaria (50 L) assigned to four groups in triplicates. Fish were fed for 7 weeks with dietary treatments, including treatment 1: feeding adult Artemia without enrichment (control group), treatment 2: feeding adult Artemia enriched with lyophilised probiotic P. acidilactici (700 mg L(-1)), 3: feeding adult Artemia enriched with prebiotic fructooligosaccharide (FOS) (100 mg L(-1)), group 4: feeding adult Artemia enriched with synbiotic (P. acidilactici (700 mg L(-1)) + FOS (100 mg L(-1))). Skin mucus immune responses (lysozyme activity, total Immunoglobulin and protease), stress resistance against environmental stress (acute decrease of temperature and increase salinity), intestinal microbiota as well as growth indices were measured at the end of feeding trial. Artemia enriched with synbiotic significantly improved growth performance compared to other treatments (P < 0.05). The highest weight gain and specific growth rate (SGR) was observed in synbiotic fed fish (P < 0.05). Compared to the other treatments, the population of lactic acid bacteria was significantly higher in the intestinal microbiota of fish fed synbiotic supplemented diet (P < 0.05). In the environmental stress challenge test, the maximum resistance to abrupt decrease of temperature (17 °C) or elevation of salinity (12 g per liter) was observed in the synbiotic treatment. Also, the total immunoglobulin and lysozyme activity level of skin mucus was significantly elevated in fish fed Artemia enriched with synbiotic (P < 0.05). These results revealed that feeding angelfish with synbiotic enriched Artemia was more effective than singular enrichment with probiotics or prebiotics.

Abstract
Infectious diseases in fish represent a major problem for the aquaculture field as they produce extensive damages and loss. Over the last few years, with increased development of the aquaculture industry, different methods have been used to contrast these pathologies. Common interest has led to the use of components (as additives in diets) that could contrast diseases without causing any negative impact on the environment. These components are represented by prebiotics, probiotics, and plant extracts. In this review, the effects of prebiotics are described. Prebiotics are indigestible fibres fermented by gut enzymes and commensal bacteria, whose beneficial effects are due to the by-products generated from fermentation. The influence of pre-biotics on the immune system of fish is called immunosaccharides. Mannanoligosaccharides (MOS), Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and Inulin act at different levels in the innate immune response. For example, through phagocytosis, lysozyme activity, and the complement system activity, an increase in fish growth and an amelioration of their health status is brought about. In this review, the use of prebiotics in aquaculture, such as immunostimulants, has been highlighted: particularly in two teleost fish species, Sparus aurata and Dicentrarchus labrax. The results demonstrate that the road is still long and further studies are required, but the use of prebiotics, individually or coupled together, can open the doors to pioneering a new model of alternative components to antimicrobial agents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Almonds contain considerable amounts of potential prebiotic components, and the roasting process may alter these components. The aim of this study was to compare the in vitro fermentation properties and in vivo prebiotic effect of raw and roasted almonds. RESULTS In vitro, predigested raw and roasted almonds promoted the growth of Lactobacillus acidophilus (La-14) and Bifidobacterium breve (JCM 1192), and no significant differences were found between these two nuts. In a 4-week animal trial, daily intake of raw or roasted almonds promoted the population of Bifidobacterium spp. and Lactobacillus spp. and inhibited the growth of Enterococcus spp. in faeces and caecal contains of rats. Compared with roasted almonds, raw almonds had a greater bifidobacteria promotion effect. Besides, significantly higher β-galactosidase activity and lower β-glucuronidase and azoreductase activities in faeces or caecal contents of rats were observed with raw almonds than with roasted almonds. While, in terms of metabolic effects, the ingestion of roasted almonds resulted in significantly greater intestinal lipase activities. CONCLUSION Both raw and roasted almonds exhibit potential prebiotic effects, including regulation of intestinal bacteria and improved metabolic activities. The roasting process may slightly reduce the prebiotic effects of almonds but significantly improve the metabolic effects
