Abstract
With the emergence of diseases, the U.S. catfish industry is under challenge. Current trends prefer autochthonous bacteria as potential probiotic candidates owing to their adaptability and capacity to effectively colonize the host's intestine, which can enhance production performance and bolster disease resistance. The objective of this study was to isolate an autochthonous bacterium as probiotic for hybrid catfish. Initially, an analysis of the intestinal microbiota of hybrid catfish reared in earthen ponds was conducted for subsequent probiotic development. Twenty lactic acid bacteria were isolated from the digesta of overperforming catfish, and most of the candidates demonstrated probiotic traits, including proteolytic and lipolytic abilities; antagonistic inhibition of catfish enteric bacterial pathogens, negative haemolytic activity and antibiotic susceptibility. Subsequent to this screening process, an isolate of Lactococcus lactis (MA5) was deemed the most promising probiotic candidate. In silico analyses were conducted, and several potential probiotic functions were predicted, including essential amino acids and vitamin synthesis. Moreover, genes for three bacteriocins, lactococcin A, enterolysin A and sactipeptide BmbF, were identified. Lastly, various protectant media for lyophilization of MA5 were assessed. These findings suggest that Lactococcus lactis MA5 can be an autochthonous probiotic from hybrid catfish, holding promise to be further tested in feeding trials.

Abstract
The mucosal surfaces of fish, including their intestines, gills, and skin, are constantly exposed to various environmental threats, such as water quality fluctuations, pollutants, and pathogens. However, various cells and microbiota closely associated with these surfaces work in tandem to create a functional protective barrier against these conditions. Recent research has shown that incorporating specific feed ingredients into fish diets can significantly boost their mucosal and general immune response. Among the various ingredients being investigated, insect meal has emerged as one of the most promising options, owing to its high protein content and immunomodulatory properties. By positively influencing the structure and function of mucosal surfaces, insect meal (IM) has the potential to enhance the overall immune status of fish. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the potential benefits of incorporating IM into aquafeed as a feed ingredient for augmenting the mucosal immune response of fish.

Abstract
The Asian seabass, Lates calcarifer, is a key species in Asian aquaculture due to its nutritional value and adaptability. However, disease outbreaks, particularly viral and bacterial infections, pose significant challenges to its production. Immunostimulants offer promising solutions but raise safety concerns. Paraprobiotics and postbiotics (CPP) emerge as safer alternatives, exerting health benefits without live microorganisms. This study investigated the potential of probiotic paraprobiotic and postbiotic supplements derived from Bacillus subtilis to enhance the immune response and antioxidant capacity of Asian seabass and improve their resistance to Streptococcus iniae infection. Analysis of antioxidant activity and lipid peroxidation revealed significant improvements in fish supplemented with CPP, indicating their effectiveness in mitigating oxidative stress. Immunological assays demonstrated enhanced growth performance and serum immunity, including increased alternative complement activity, immunoglobulin levels, and phagocytic activity, in supplemented fish. Furthermore, upregulated expression of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6, IL-1β) and pattern recognition receptors (NLRC3, TLR22, MDA5) in immune tissues . Fish supplemented with CPP exhibited higher resistance and survival rates against S. iniae infection challenge compared to control groups. The study elucidates the mechanisms underlying the immunomodulatory effects of CPP, shedding light on their potential applications in aquaculture.

Abstract
The current research aimed to shed light on the efficacy of Escherichia coli strain Nissle 1917 (EcN) on goldfish (……) growth, gut immunity, morphology, bacterial nutritional enzyme activity and resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila infection. Fish fed with EcN at 106, 107 and 108 CFU/g feed for 80 days showed an enhancement in growth better than control fish. The gut innate immunity in terms of lysozyme activity, immunoglobulin and total protein levels was increased in the treatment fish with the best result being observed in fish fed EcN at 108 CFU/ g. In addition, an increase was noted in the upregulation of immune-relevant genes, namely lysozyme, interleukin-1β, inducible nitric oxide synthase and tumor necrosis factor α of fish intestine. A marked surge in the number of proteolytic and heterotrophic bacteria was noted in the gut of fish nourished with the probiotic. Histological studies exhibited an improvement in the intestinal absorption surface area, intraepithelial lymphocyte count and goblet cell density. Significantly higher survival rate was obtained in fish fed EcN at 108 CFU/g compared with the fish fed with the basal diet. These data exhibited the beneficial effect of EcN on goldfish growth, digestive enzymes, intestine heterotrophic bacteria and resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila challenge. This study confirmed the favorable outcomes resulting from the administration of EcN at108 CFU/g.

Abstract
The healthy intestinal microbiota of shrimp can be used as an indicator sustainable shrimp production. In this study, the integrated of metagenomic and screening probiotic approach from healthy Litopenaeus vannamei intestines in differing stages was studied to find novel indigenous probiotics. The microbiota from intestine of naupli, post larva (PL-10), juvenile (40 days), and adult (80 days) of Pacific white shrimp were characterized using a high-quality sequence of V3-V4 of 16S rRNA gene as the hypervariable region. The classifiable sequence number was detected in 54 phyla. Several core intestine bacteria, 35 of these 557 genera, have a prevalence >10 sequences across all samples. We found microbiota were different taxa in the difference stages, such as Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Bacteriodetes. The top 10 most abundant genera were Vibrio, Pseudoalteromonas, Spingomonas, Marinibacterium, Klebsiella, Alteromonas, Aestuaribacter, Shimia, Stenotrophomonas, and Ruegeria. Microbiota profiling based on a metagenomic approach was integrated with screening assessment for pathogenicity, antagonistic activity with Vibrio parahaemolyticus Vp5, antibiotic resistance, and digestive enzyme activities. As their assessment activity, several screened culturable bacteria were 19 of these 84 isolates. Three isolates with high activities (P < 0.05) found as novel indigenous probiotics were Shewanella algae A1, Shewanella algae A3, and Vibrio diabolicus UB3. Integrating metagenomic and screening methods was a new signature for the isolating novel indigenous probiotics in Pacific white shrimp.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Feed additives have attracted increased attention in aquaculture due to their ability to modulate fish gut microbiota, resulting in improved fish growth and immunity. This study assessed the effects of two synbiotics in Japanese Eel Anguilla japonica: Bacillus subtilis with mannooligosaccharides (MOS) and Enterococcus faecium with fructooligosaccharides (FOS). METHODS Six diets, including a control (CON) diet, oxytetracycline (OTC) diet, and four synbiotic diets (B. subtilis at 1 × 106 or 1 × 107 colony-forming units [CFU]/g with MOS at 5 g/kg [BS6MO and BS7MO; collectively, BSMOS diets] and E. faecium at 1 × 106 or 1 × 107 CFU/g with FOS at 5 g/kg [EF6FO and EF7FO; collectively, EFFOS diets]), were fed to triplicate groups of 20 fish (average weight ± SD = 6.00 ± 0.07 g) for 8 weeks. RESULT Fish fed the BSMOS diets showed significantly higher weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and feed efficiency compared to fish fed the CON and OTC diets, but the values were not significantly different from those of fish fed the EFFOS diets. Weight gain and SGR of fish that were given EFFOS diets were not significantly different from those of fish fed all other diets. Fish fed the OTC diet showed a higher mean aspartate aminotransferase level, although the difference was not statistically significant. The myeloperoxidase activity of fish fed the BS7MO diet was significantly higher than those of fish receiving all other diets, and the superoxide dismutase activity of fish fed the BS7MO diet was also significantly higher than that of fish fed the EF7FO diet. Overall, the BSMOS synbiotic diets were significantly more effective than the CON diet in enhancing fish survival against a Vibrio anguillarum challenge. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that synbiotics can be a preferable alternative to antibiotics in aquaculture.

Abstract
This study aims to evaluate the effects of paprika extract on the survival rate, growth performance and stimulation of the innate immune system of Litopenaeus vannamei. In this experiment, 240 healthy shrimp (3.22 ± 0.12 g) were randomly divided into four groups. The shrimp were fed diets with different concentrations of paprika oil extracts (0%, 0.5%, 1% and 2%) for 8 weeks. The results showed that growth performance, urea, uric acid, creatinine, cholesterol levels, aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase activities were not significantly affected by adding paprika extract to the shrimp diet (p > 0.05). Diets containing 1% and 0.5% paprika extract showed the highest levels of total protein and triglyceride, respectively (p < 0.05). There was a significant decrease in haemolymph glucose concentration in shrimp-fed diets containing 1% and 2% paprika extract (p < 0.05). Moreover, a diet containing 0.5% paprika extract resulted in the highest levels of total heamocyte count, hyaline cells and large-granular cells in shrimp (p < 0.05). Higher catalase and superoxide dismutase activities were also exhibited in the paprika groups (p < 0.05). Vibrio sp. bacteria were not significantly reduced by paprika extract in the intestines of L. vannamei (p > 0.05). A significant decrease in heterotrophic bacteria was observed with increasing extract concentrations (p < 0.05). The shrimp culture industry can utilize paprika extract as a cost-effective, efficient and environmentally friendly immune stimulant at a concentration of 0.5%.

Abstract
Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG), the well-characterized human-derived probiotic strain, possesses excellent properties in the maintenance of intestinal homeostasis, immunoregulation and defense against gastrointestinal pathogens in mammals. Here, we demonstrate that the SpaC pilin of LGG causes intestinal epithelium injury by inducing cell pyroptosis and gut microbial dysbiosis in zebrafish. Dietary SpaC activates Caspase-3-GSDMEa pathways in the intestinal epithelium, promotes intestinal pyroptosis and increases lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-producing gut microbes in zebrafish. The increased LPS subsequently activates Gaspy2-GSDMEb pyroptosis pathway. Further analysis reveals the Caspase-3-GSDMEa pyroptosis is initiated by the species-specific recognition of SpaC by TLR4ba, which accounts for the species-specificity of the SpaC-inducing intestinal pyroptosis in zebrafish. The observed pyroptosis-driven gut injury and microbial dysbiosis by LGG in zebrafish suggest that host-specific beneficial/harmful mechanisms are critical safety issues when applying probiotics derived from other host species and need more attention.

Abstract
The demands of intensified aquaculture production and escalating disease prevalence underscore the need for efficacious probiotic strategies to enhance fish health. This study focused on isolating and characterising potential probiotics from the gut microbiota of the emerging aquaculture species jade perch (Scortum barcoo). Eighty-seven lactic acid bacteria and 149 other bacteria were isolated from the digestive tract of five adult jade perch. The screening revealed that 24 Enterococcus hirae isolates inhibited the freshwater pathogens Aeromonas sobria and Streptococcus iniae. Co-incubating E. hirae with the host gut suspensions demonstrated a two- to five-fold increase in the size of growth inhibition zones compared to the results when using gut suspensions from tilapia (a non-host), indicating host-specificity. Genome analysis of the lead isolate, E. hirae R44, predicted the presence of antimicrobial compounds like enterolysin A, class II lanthipeptide, and terpenes, which underlay its antibacterial attributes. Isolate R44 exhibited desirable probiotic characteristics, including survival at pH values within the range of 3 to 12, bile tolerance, antioxidant activity, ampicillin sensitivity, and absence of transferable antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence factors commonly associated with hospital Enterococcus strains (IS16, hylEfm, and esp). This study offers a foundation for sourcing host-adapted probiotics from underexplored aquaculture species. Characterisation of novel probiotics like E. hirae R44 can expedite the development of disease mitigation strategies to support aquaculture intensification.

Abstract
In recent years, the advancement and greater magnitude of products, which led to the intensification in shrimp aquaculture is the result of utilization of modern tools and synchronization with other fields of science like microbiology and biotechnology. This intensification led to the elevation of disorders such as the development of several diseases and complications associated with biofouling. The use of antibiotics in aquaculture is discouraged due to their certain hazardous paraphernalia. Consequently, there has been a growing interest in exploring alternative strategies, with probiotics and prebiotics emerging as environmentally friendly substitutes for antibiotic treatments in shrimp aquaculture. This review highlighted the results of probiotics and prebiotics administration in the improvement of water quality, enhancement of growth and survival rates, stress resistance, health status and disease resistance, modulation of enteric microbiota and immunomodulation of different shrimp species. Additionally, the study sheds light on the comprehensive role of prebiotics and probiotics in elucidating the mechanistic framework, contributing to a deeper understanding of shrimp physiology and immunology. Besides their role in growth and development of shrimp aquaculture, the eco-friendly behavior of prebiotics and probiotics have made them ideal to control pollution in aquaculture systems. This comprehensive exploration of prebiotics and probiotics aims to address gaps in our understanding, including the economic aspects of shrimp aquaculture in terms of benefit-cost ratio, and areas worthy of further investigation by drawing insights from previous studies on different shrimp species. Ultimately, this commentary seeks to contribute to the evolving body of knowledge surrounding prebiotics and probiotics, offering valuable perspectives that extend beyond the ecological dimensions of shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
The giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) is a high-yielding prawn variety well-received worldwide due to its ability to adapt to freshwater culture systems. Macrobrachium rosenbergii is an alternative to shrimp typically obtained from marine and brackish aquaculture systems. However, the use of intensive culture systems can lead to disease outbreaks, particularly in larval and post-larval stages, caused by pathogenic agents such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, yeasts and protozoans. White tail disease (viral), white spot syndrome (viral) and bacterial necrosis are examples of economically significant diseases. Given the increasing antibiotic resistance of disease-causing microorganisms, probiotics have emerged as promising alternatives for disease control. Probiotics are live active microbes that are introduced into a target host in an adequate number or dose to promote its health. In the present paper, we first discuss the diseases that occur in M. rosenbergii production, followed by an in-depth discussion on probiotics. We elaborate on the common methods of probiotics administration and explain the beneficial health effects of probiotics as immunity enhancers. Moreover, we discuss the antagonistic effects of probiotics on pathogenic microorganisms. Altogether, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of disease control in M. rosenbergii aquaculture through the use of probiotics, which could enhance the sustainability of prawn culture.

Abstract
Aquatic animal health management has become a crucial component in the goal of increasing catfish aquaculture productivity. Additionally, hybrid catfish (Clarias gariepinus × C. macrocephalus) has been promoted as a highly profitable freshwater fish in Asia. Interestingly, the crucial diseases induced by Aeromonas hydrophila have been reported to greatly impede catfish production. To overcome this challenge, the aim was to investigate the effects of the oral administration of potentially synbiotic chitosan (CH) and Acinetobacter KU011TH (AK) on the growth performance, immunological responses, and disease resistance of hybrid catfish against A. hydrophila. The control group was fed a basal diet (A), the diet fed to treatment group B was supplemented with 20 mL of CH/kg diet (B), and the experimental feed fed to groups C-D was mixed with 1 × 108, 1 × 109 and 1 × 1010 CFU/mL AK coated with 20 mL of CH/kg diet. Five different groups of juvenile hybrid catfish were continuously fed the 5 formulated feeds for 4 weeks. The results revealed that all tested feeds did not significantly enhance the hybrid catfish's average daily gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, hematocrit and erythrocyte counts. Interestingly, the application of CH and AK significantly increased the leukocyte counts, respiratory burst, lysozyme activity, alternative complement pathway hemolytic activity, and bactericidal activity (P < 0.05). The expression levels of the immune-related genes in the whole blood, head kidney, and spleen were significantly increased after CH-AK application (P < 0.05), but this finding was not observed in the liver (P > 0.05). Additionally, after 14 days of A. hydrophila peritoneal injection, the fish in group C showed significantly higher survival rates of approximately 70.0 % compared with the control fish in groups B, D, and E (52.5 %, 40.0 %, 45.0 %, and 45.0 %, respectively) (P < 0.05). These results collectively suggest that short-term application of the diet fed to group C effectively boosted the immune responses and disease resistance of hybrid catfish against A. hydrophila.

Abstract
β-conglycinin is a recognized factor in leading to intestinal inflammation and limiting application of soybean meal in aquaculture. Our previous study reported that heat-killed B. siamensis LF4 could effectively mitigate inflammatory response and apoptosis caused by β-conglycinin in spotted seabass (Lateolabrax maculatus) enterocytes, but the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. In the present study, therefore, whole cell wall (CW), peptidoglycan (PG) and lipoteichoic acid (LTA) and cell-free supernatant (CFS) have been collected from B. siamensis LF4 and their mitigative function on β-conglycinin-induced adverse impacts and mechanisms underlying were evaluated. The results showed that β-conglycinin-induced cell injury, characterized with significantly decreased cell viability and increased activities of lactate dehydrogenase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, glutamic propylic transaminase (P < 0.05), were reversed by subsequent heat-killed B. siamensis LF4 and its CW, LTA, PG and CFS treatment. Enterocytes co-cultured with heat-killed B. siamensis LF4 and its CW, LTA, PG and CFS (especially PG) significantly increased expressions of anti-inflammatory genes (IL-2, IL-4, IL-10 and TGF-β1), tight junction proteins (ZO-1, occludin and claudin-b) and antimicrobial peptides (β-defensin, hepcidin-1, NK-lysin and piscidin-5), and decreased expressions of pro-inflammatory genes (IL-1β, IL-8 and TNF-α) and apoptosis-related genes (caspase 3, caspase 8 and caspase 9) (P < 0.05), indicating their excellent mitigation effects on β-conglycinin-induced cell damages. In addition, heat-killed B. siamensis LF4 and its CW, LTA, PG and CFS significantly increased TLR2 mRNA level (especially in PG treatment), and decreased MAPKs (JNK, ERK, p38 and AP-1) and NF-κB related genes expressions. In conclusion, heat-killed B. siamensis LF4 and its CW, LTA, PG and CFS could modulating TLR2/MAPKs/NF-κB signaling and alleviating β-conglycinin-induced enterocytes injury in spotted seabass (L. maculatus), and PG presented the best potential.

Abstract
The application of probiotics, in aquaculture, is becoming increasingly widespread and have had positive application effects. However, reports of loach-derived probiotics are quite limited. In this study, two representative strains of lactic acid bacteria with excellent traits, namely, Weissella confusa N17 and Lactobacillus saniviri N19, were screened from the intestine of healthy loaches. W. confusa N17 and L. saniviri N19 could inhibit different common various pathogenic bacteria, especially Aeromonas spp., and were sensitive to the most common antibiotics. The survival rate of the two strains exceeded 50% after 4 h of incubation in 10% loach bile. Moreover, the two strains showed significant tolerance to trypsin. Their autoaggregation capacity and hydrophobicity were greater than 30%. In addition, the aggregation ability of both strains was higher than 30% for both A. veronii TH0426 and A. hydrophila TPS. The two strains had a high biofilm-forming ability and strong adhesion to epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC) cells. Scanning electron microscopy results showed that the culture supernatants of the two strains had a significantly destructive effect on A. veronii TH0426 and A. hydrophila TPS. Overall, the traits of W. confusa N17 were better than those of L. saniviri N19. Genome sequencing and analysis demonstrated a lack of virulence factor-related or drug resistance-related genes in genome N17. The diet supplemented with the W. confusa N17 strain significantly improved the resistance of loaches to A. veronii infection, and the protection rate reached 57.1%. Therefore, W. confusa N17 exhibits promising for further applications in loach aquaculture.

Abstract
To counter the recurrent outbreaks of bacterial (acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease; AHPND) and viral (white spot disease; WSD) shrimp diseases, which still remain a threat to the global industry, shrimp gut microbiota research has been gaining more attention in recent years, and the use of probiotics in aquaculture has had promising results in improving shrimp gut health and immunity. In this review based on our studies on AHPND and WSD, we summarize our current understanding of the shrimp gastrointestinal tract and the role of the microbiota in disease, as well as effects of probiotics. We focus particularly on the concept of microbiota resilience, and consider strategies that can be used to restore shrimp gut health by probiotic intervention at a crucial time during gut microbiota dysbiosis. Based on the available scientific evidence, we argue that the use of probiotics potentially has an important role in controlling disease in shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
Greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili) is a new species in marine aquaculture with high mortalities at the larval stages. The microbiota of amberjack larvae was analyzed using 16S rDNA sequencing in two groups, one added copepod nauplii (Acartia tonsa) in the diet, and one without copepods (control). In addition, antagonistic bacteria were isolated from amberjack larvae and live food cultures. Proteobacteria was the most abundant phylum followed by Bacteroidota in amberjack larvae. The composition and diversity of the microbiota were influenced by age, but not by diet. Microbial community richness and diversity significantly increased over time. Rhodobacteraceae was the most dominant family followed by Vibrionaceae, which showed the highest relative abundance in larvae from the control group 31 days after hatching. Alcaligenes and Thalassobius genera exhibited a significantly higher relative abundance in the copepod group. Sixty-two antagonistic bacterial strains were isolated and screened for their ability to inhibit four fish pathogens (Aeromonas veronii, Vibrio harveyi, V. anguillarum, V. alginolyticus) using a double-layer test. Phaeobacter gallaeciensis, Phaeobacter sp., Ruegeria sp., and Rhodobacter sp. isolated from larvae and Artemia sp. inhibited the fish pathogens. These antagonistic bacteria could be used as host-derived probiotics to improve the growth and survival of the greater amberjack larvae.

Abstract
The present study aimed to determine the effects of dietary probiotic supplementation on feed efficiency, physiological parameters, and semen quality of male rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) broodstock. For this purpose, a total of 48 breeders with an average initial weight of 1366.1 ± 33.8 g were divided into 4 groups and 3 replicates. Fish were fed with diets containing 0 (control), 1 × 109 (P1), 2 × 109 (P2), and 4 × 109 (P3) CFU multi-strain probiotic kg-1 diet for 8 weeks. According to the results, P2 treatment significantly enhanced body weight increase, specific growth rate, and protein efficiency ratio and decreased feed conversion ratio. Moreover, the highest values of red blood cells count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit values were observed in P2 treatment (P < 0.05). The lowest levels of glucose, cholesterol, and triglyceride were found in P1, P2, and P3 treatments, respectively. Also, the highest levels of total protein and albumin were obtained in P2 and P1 treatments (P < 0.05). Based on the results, plasma enzymes contents were significantly decreased in P2 and P3 treatments. In terms of immune parameters, the complement component 3, complement component 4, and immunoglobulin M levels were increased in all probiotic-fed treatments (P < 0.05). For spermatological features, the highest spermatocrit value, sperm concentration, and motility time were observed in the P2 treatment (P < 0.05). Consequently, we conclude that multi-strain probiotics can be used as functional feed additives in male rainbow trout broodstock to enhance semen quality, improve physiological responses, and better feed efficiency.

Abstract
Probiotics play vital roles in improving growth, survival, and immune responses and inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria in freshwater fish. This study was conducted to isolate potential probiotics from Channa punctatus and Channa striatus and to evaluate their effect on Labeo rohita fingerlings. Among the isolates, Bacillus paramycoides PBG9D and BCS10 (1) exhibited antimicrobial activity against the fish pathogen Aeromonas hydrophila. Both strains showed tolerance to acidic and alkaline pH (2, 3, 4, 7, and 9) and bile salts (0.3%) and exhibited strong adhesion capacity. After in-vitro assessment, these strains were evaluated on the growth performances of rohu fingerlings challenged by Aeromonas hydrophila for 4 weeks. The study consisted of six groups, each containing 6 fish. Group (I) was the control, fed a basal diet; group (II) contained a pathogen and was also fed a basal diet; group (III & IV) was given a probiotic supplemented experimental diet; Fourth group (V & VI) contained a pathogen and was given a probiotic supplemented experimental diet. After the 12th day of experiment, rohu fingerlings of pathogen (II) and probiotic + pathogen (V & VI) groups were intraperitoneally injected with 0.1 mL of Aeromonas hydrophila. After 4 weeks, no significant differences in weight gain, weight gain %, and feed conversion ratio were observed in probiotic (III & IV)- fed groups compared to control. However, the specific growth rate was significantly improved in probiotic fed groups compared to other groups. Survival rate and condition factor were significantly similar in all groups. After injection, abnormal swimming, loss of appetite and weight loss were observed in the pathogen (II) group, while no such symptoms were found in the probiotic + pathogen (V & VI)- groups, confirming the effects of probiotics. The overall results of the study revealed that dietary supplementation with Bacillus paramycoides strains could improve the specific growth rate and disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila in Labeo rohita.

Abstract
Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) play an important role in modulating intestinal microbiota, and our previous study showed that autochthonous Baccilus siamensis LF4 could shape the intestinal microbiota of spotted seabass (Lateolabrax maculatus). In the present study, a spotted seabass intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) model was used to investigate whether autochthonous B. siamensis LF4 could modulate the expression of AMPs in IECs. And then, the IECs were treated with active, heat-inactivated LF4 and its supernatant to illustrate their AMPs inducing effects and the possible signal transduction mechanisms. The results showed that after 3 h of incubation with 108 CFU/mL B. siamensis LF4, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT), glutamic propylic transaminase (GPT) activities in supernatant decreased significantly and obtained minimum values, while supernatant alkaline phosphatase (AKP) activity, β-defensin protein level and IECs Na+/K+-ATPase activity, AMPs (β-defensin, hepcidin-1, NK-lysin, piscidin-5) genes expression increased significantly and obtained maximum values (P < 0.05). Further study demonstrated that the active, heat-inactivated LF4 and its supernatant treatments could effectively decrease the LDH, GOT, and GPT activities in IECs supernatant, increase AKP activity and β-defensin (except LF4 supernatant treatment) protein level in IECs supernatant and Na+/K+-ATPase and AMPs genes expression in IECs. Treatment with active and heat-inactivated B. siamensis LF4 resulted in significantly up-regulated the expressions of TLR1, TLR2, TLR3, TLR5, NOD1, NOD2, TIRAP, MyD88, IRAK1, IRAK4, TRAF6, TAB1, TAB2, ERK, JNK, p38, AP-1, IKKα, IKKβ and NF-κB genes. Treatment with B. siamensis LF4 supernatant also resulted in up-regulated these genes, but not the genes (ERK, JNK, p38, and AP-1) in MAPKs pathway. In summary, active, heat-inactivated and supernatant of B. siamensis LF4 can efficiently induce AMPs expression through activating the TLRs/NLRs-MyD88-dependent signaling, active and heat-inactivated LF4 activated both the downstream MAPKs and NF-κB pathways, while LF4 supernatant only activated NF-κB pathway.

Abstract
Yellow drum (Nibea albiflora), a commercially important fish species in the coastal regions of southeast China, is highly susceptible to red-head disease caused by Vibrio harveyi B0003. Probiotics have been shown to enhance disease resistance in fish, but whether commensal probiotics could improve of the resistance to red-head disease in yellow drum and possible mechanisms has yet not been reported. A six-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the red-head disease resistance potentials of five probiotic candidates (Bacillus megaterium B1M2, B. subtilis B0E9, Enterococcus faecalis AT5, B. velezensis DM5 and B. siamensis B0E14), and the liver health, serum and skin immunities, gut and skin mucosal microbiota of yellow drum were determined to illustrate the possible mechanisms. The results showed that autochthonous B. subtilis B0E9 and E. faecalis AT5 (particularly E. faecalis AT5, P < 0.05) effectively improved red-head disease resistance in yellow drum. Furthermore, B. subtilis B0E9 and E. faecalis AT5 (particularly E. faecalis AT5) efficiently improve liver health by improving liver morphology and decreasing serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic propylic transaminase activities pre and post challenged with V. harveyi B0003 (P < 0.05). B. subtilis B0E9 and E. faecalis AT5 led to significant improvement (P < 0.05) in the serum complement 3 content (un-detected after challenged with V. harveyi B0003), lysozyme activity and skin mucosal immunity (such as IL-6, IL-10 and lysozyme expression) pre and post challenged with V. harveyi B0003, which was generally consistent with the cumulative mortality after challenged with V. harveyi B0003. This induced activations of serum and skin mucosal immunities were consistent with the microbiota data showing that B. subtilis B0E9 and E. faecalis AT5 modulated the overall structure of intestinal and skin mucosal microbiota, and in particular, the relative abundance of potentially pathogenic Achromobacter decreased while beneficial Streptococcus, Rothia, and Lactobacillus increased in fish fed with B. subtilis B0E9 and E. faecalis AT5. Overall, autochthonous B. subtilis B0E9 and E. faecalis AT5 (particularly E. faecalis AT5) can improve liver health, serum and skin immunities (especially up-regulated lysozyme activity and inflammation-related genes expression), positively shape gut and skin mucosal microbiota, and enhance red-head disease resistance of yellow drum.

Abstract
Finfish and fish products are globally the most acknowledged health-promoting foods. The rising incidence of pathogenic and disease outbreaks have had a sizeable impact on aquaculture. Microbial supplementation of food in the form of probiotics, prebiotics, and their controlled release combinations (=co-encapsulations) as 'synbiotics' is noted for its significant biotherapeutic and health benefits. Supplementation of probiotic microbial feed additives in the fish diet claims to improve fish health by modulation of resident intestinal microbiota and by introducing healthy microbiota procured from an exogenous source, capable of combating pathogens, improving nutrient uptake, assimilation, growth as well as survival. Prebiotics are selectively digestible substrates beneficially used by host gut microbes to enhance probiotic effects. Formulating a fish diet with augmented probiotics and prebiotic microbial bio-supplements can ensure a sustainable alternative for establishing fish health in a naturally susceptible aquaculture scenario. Micro-encapsulation, co-encapsulation, and nano-encapsulation are novel strategies of biotechnical interventions in functional feeds for finfish. These aim to improve probiotic persistence, survivability, and efficacy in commercial formulations during probiotic transit through the host-gut environment. This review discusses the importance of co-treatment and encapsulation strategies for improving probiotic and prebiotic potential in aquafeed formulations, reliably improving finfish health and nutritional returns from aquaculture, and, consequently, for consumers.

Abstract
Nutrition demands in aquaculture can be realized through quality aquafeeds as compounded diets that contribute to the growth and health of aquaculture species. Functional additives in feed, notably probiotics, prebiotics, and their admixture synbiotics, have been recently recognized for their biotherapeutic role as immunostimulants capable of conferring disease resistance, stress tolerance, and gastrointestinal health; counteracting the negative effects of anti-nutrients, pathogenic prevalence, and antimicrobials in finfish aquaculture. Formulated diets based on probiotics, prebiotics, and as a supplemental combination for synbiotics can significantly influence fish gut microbiomes, establishing the modalities of microbial dynamics to maximize host-associated benefits. These microbial functional-feed supplements are acclaimed to be biocompatible, biodegradable, and safe for dietary consumption as well as the environment. In fed fish aquaculture, prebiotic appended probiotic diet 'synbiotic' has propounded larger attention for its additional health and nutritional benefits. Synbiotic, prebiotic, and probiotic usage as functional feeds for finfish aquaculture thus provides promising prospects. Developing trends in their intended application are reviewed here forth.

In silico, in vitro and in vivo characterization of host-associated Latilactobacillus curvatus strains for potential probiotic applications in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Abstract
Salmon aquaculture is the fastest growing animal protein production system in the world; however, intensive farming leads to poor weight gain, stress, and disease outbreaks. Probiotics offer the potential to enhance growth performance and feed efficiency in Atlantic salmon, as well as immunostimulate fish against common pathogens, benefitting farmers and consumers with more efficient production. Here, we isolated and identified 900 native microbial isolates including 18 Lactobacilli from the farmed salmon intestines. Based on whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis, the Lactobacillus candidates belonged to Latilactobacillus curvatus (L. curvatus) species and formed two distinct phylogenetic groups. Using bioinformatics and in vitro analyses, we selected two candidates L. curvatus ATCC PTA-127116 and L. curvatus ATCC PTA-127117, which showed desirable safety and probiotic properties. The two L. curvatus candidates were evaluated for safety and efficacy (higher final weight) in Atlantic salmon alongside spore-forming Bacilli isolated from salmon, poultry, and swine. All the tested candidates were safe to salmon with no adverse effects. While we did not see efficacy in any Bacillus supplemented groups, compared to untreated group, the group administered with the two L. curvatus strains consortium in feed for seven weeks in freshwater showed indicators of improvement in final body weight by 4.2%. Similarly, the two L. curvatus candidates were also evaluated for safety and efficacy in Atlantic salmon in saltwater; the group administered with the two L. curvatus strains consortium in feed for 11 weeks showed indicators of improvement in final body weight by 4.7%. Comprehensive metabolomics analyses in the presence of different prebiotics and/or additives identified galactooligosaccharide as a potential prebiotic to enhance the efficacy of two L. curvatus candidates. All together, these data provide comprehensive genomic, phenotypic and metabolomic evidence of safety and desirable probiotic properties as well as indicators of in vivo efficacy of two novel endogenous L. curvatus candidates for potential probiotic applications in Atlantic salmon. The in vivo findings need to be confirmed in larger performance studies, including field trials.

Abstract
As an important member in SR-As, member 5 (SCARA5) can swallow apoptotic cells and foreign bodies, and participate multiple signaling pathways to inhibit tumor occurrence, development growth and metastasis. To explore its immune function, SCARA5 was identified from the yellow drum (Nibea albiflora) according to its transcriptome data, and its full-length cDNA was 6968 bp (named as NaSCARA5, GenBank accession no: MW070211) encoding 497 amino acids with a calculated molecular weight of 55.12 kDa, which had the typical motifs of SR family, such as transmembrane helix region, coil region, Pfam collagens region and SR region. BLASTp and the phylogenetic relationship analysis illustrated that the sequences shared high similarity with known SCARA5 of teleosts. Quantitative real time RT-PCR analysis showed that NaSCARA5 was expressed in intestine, stomach, liver, kidney, gill, heart and spleen, with the highest in the spleen (24.42-fold compared with that in heart). After being infected with Polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (PolyI:C), Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, NaSCARA5 mRNA were up-regulated with time dependent mode in spleen, which suggested that NaSCARA5 might play an important role in the immune process of fish. The extracellular domain of NaSCARA5 was successfully expressed in BL21 (DE3), and yielded the target protein of the expected size with many active sites for their conferring protein-protein interaction functions. After being purified by Ni-NAT Superflow resin and renatured, it was found to bind all the tested bacteria (V.parahaemolyticus,V.alginolyticus and Vibrio harveyi). The eukaryotic expression vector of the NaSCARA5-EGFP fusion protein was constructed and transferred into epithelioma papulosum cyprini (EPC) cells, and it was mainly expressed on the cell membrane indicating that NaSCARA5 was a typical transmembrane protein. The aforementioned results indicated that NaSCARA5 played a significant role in the defense against pathogenic bacteria infection as PRRs, which may provide some further understandings of the regulatory mechanisms in the fish innate immune system for SR family.

Abstract
Fish products are highly vulnerable to microbial contamination due to their soft tissues, making them perishable and harmful to consumers. The clinical and subclinical infections reported by fish consumers are mainly associated with pathogenic microorganisms in fish products. Therefore, this study aimed at establishing the molecular profiles and diversity of the bacterial isolates from fish and fish products obtained from Kirinyaga County markets in Kenya. A total of 660 samples were randomly sampled in six Kirinyaga County markets and transported to Kenyatta University for bacterial isolation. The fish skin surface was cut using a sterile knife and blended in buffered peptone water. The blended product was serially diluted and plated on nutrient agar. After 24 hours, the bacteria cultures were subcultured to obtain pure bacterial isolates. The pure isolates were grouped and characterized based on their morphology and biochemical characteristics. One representative of each group was selected for bacterial DNA extraction. The 16S rRNA gene was amplified using the 27F and 1492R primers, and the obtained PCR product was subjected to Sanger-based sequencing using the same primers. Morphological characterization yielded 54 morpho groups. Phylogenetic analysis revealed diverse bacterial strains, including Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica, Citrobacter freundii, Bacillus sp. and Alcaligenes faecalis. Bacillus sp. was the most dominant group, as compared to other isolates in the study. The study, therefore, revealed diverse bacterial strains from the fish products. This high microbial diversity calls for heightened surveillance to prevent possible foodborne disease outbreaks.

Abstract
This research aimed to isolate lactic acid bacteria from the bowel of saltwater fish to assess their potential probiotic properties. Nineteen isolates of LAB including Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lactiplantibacillus pentosus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Levilactobacillus brevis, Pediococcus pentosaceus, and Pediococcus acidilactici were recognized using molecular tools. All the isolates survived in the simulated conditions of the GI tract. Auto-aggregation ranged from 01.3 ± 0.5 to 82.6 ± 1.4% and hydrophobicity with toluene ranged from 3.7 ± 1.6 to 69.4 ± 1.3%, while the range of hydrophobicity with xylene was from 02.2 ± 1.6 to 56.4 ± 2.1%. All the isolates of lactobacilli, pediococci, enterococci, and lactococci indicated variable sensitivity and resistance towards clinical antibiotics. Non-neutralized cell free supernatant of isolates F12 and F15 showed antimicrobial activity against all the 8 evaluated enteric pathogens. Cluster analysis of identified potential probiotic bacteria based on heat-map and PCA methods also highlighted the priority of isolates F3, F7, F12, and F15 as bio-control agents in fishery industry. The findings of this study may essentially contribute to the understanding of the probiotic potential of LAB in saltwater fish, in order to access their probiotic characterization for use as biocontrol in fishery.

Abstract
Diseases of fish caused by pathogenic bacteria are an important constraint on aquaculture production. Antibiotics have been widely used to control infectious diseases, but this has led to the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria and affected human health. In this context, probiotics are used as an alternative to antibiotics for the prevention and control of diseases in aquaculture. The aim of this study was to obtain probiotic candidate strains of Bacillus spp. from the gut of Rhynchocypris Lagowskii. Strains were screened by enzyme-producing ability, antagonism assay and antibiotic susceptibility. The safety of the strains to host fish has also been established. The isolated Bacillus licheniformis (LSG1-1) and Bacillus subtilis (LSG2-1) were characterized and performed well in tolerance experiments. In addition, LSG1-1 and LSG2-1 were detected to have higher self-aggregation ability and surface hydrophobicity. In the in vitro adhesion model, LSG1-1 and LSG2-1 showed good adhesion ability and had obvious adhesion inhibitory effect on three pathogens of Aeromonas. Based on the characteristics observed so far, Bacillus licheniformis LSG1-1 and Bacillus subtilis LSG2-1 could form potential probiotic candidates in the digestive tract of R. lagowskii to help combat diseases in aquaculture.

Abstract
Bacillus spp. are well known for their probiotic properties. Hence, the long-term feeding of Bacillus spp. strains to different fish species has been proved to confer beneficial effects regarding growth or pathogen resistance, among others. However, whether these strains could function as mucosal adjuvants, up-regulating immune responses after a single administration, has not yet been investigated in fish. Thus, in the current work, we have performed a series of experiments in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) aimed at establishing the potential of two Bacillus subtilis spore-forming strains, designated as ABP1 and ABP2, as oral adjuvants/immunostimulants. As an initial step, we evaluated their transcriptional effects on the rainbow trout intestinal epithelial cell line RTgutGC, and in gut tissue explants incubated ex vivo with the two strains. Their capacity to adhere to RTgutGC cells was also evaluated by flow cytometry. Although both strains had the capacity to modulate the transcription of several genes related to innate and adaptive immune responses, it was the ABP1 strain that led to stronger transcriptional effects, also exerting a higher binding capacity to intestinal epithelial cells. Consequently, we selected this strain to establish its effects on splenic B cells upon in vitro exposure as well as to determine the transcriptional effects exerted in the spleen, kidney, and gut after a single oral administration of the bacteria. Our results showed that B. subtilis ABP1 had the capacity to modulate the proliferation, IgM secreting capacity and MHC II surface expression of splenic B cells. Finally, we confirmed that this strain also induced the transcription of genes involved in inflammation, antimicrobial genes, and genes involved in T cell responses upon a single oral administration. Our results provide valuable information regarding how B. subtilis modulates the immune response of rainbow trout, pointing to the usefulness of the ABP1 strain to design novel oral vaccination strategies for aquaculture.

Abstract
High dose (0.3%) of dietary histamine can cause adverse effects on growth performance, innate immunity, and gut health in juvenile grouper (Epinephelus coioides). In the present study, three autochthonous probiotics (Bacillus pumilus SE5, Psychrobacter sp. SE6, and Bacillus clausii DE5) were supplemented separately to diets containing 0.3% of histamine and their effects on growth performance, innate immunity, and gut health of grouper (E. coioides) were evaluated in a 56-day feeding trial. The results showed considerable increase in weight gain, specific growth rate, hepatosomatic index, and decreased feed conversion rate in groupers fed with probiotic-supplemented diets. Supplementation of autochthonous probiotics has improved antioxidant capacity and innate immunity of E. coioides by measuring correlative parameters, such as total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase activity, malondialdehyde content, and so on. Additionally, dietary probiotics have significantly reduced the levels of serum interleukin-1β (at days 28 and 56), fatty acid-binding protein 2, and intestinal trefoil factor (at day 28), and promoted intestinal integrity following remarkably increased muscle thickness and mucosal fold height at day 56, especially in grouper fed with B. pumilus SE5 containing diet (P < 0.05). On day 56, the gut microbial composition of E. coioides was positively shaped by autochthonous probiotics, the relative abundance of potentially pathogenic Photobacterium decreased while beneficial Lactobacillus increased in fish fed with probiotic strains, especially with B. pumilus SE5 and B. clausii DE5. These results suggest that among the three autochthonous probiotic strains tested, B. pumilus SE5 is showing better efficiency in alleviating the adverse effects of (high levels) dietary histamine by decreasing the expression of inflammatory markers and by improving the growth, innate immunity, and gut health of juvenile grouper E. coioides.

Abstract
Tilapia production has significantly increased over the past few years due to the adoption of semi-intensive and intensive aquaculture technologies. However, these farming systems have subjected the fish to stressful conditions that suppress their immunity, hence exposing them to various pathogens. The application of antibiotics and therapeutics to enhance disease resistance, survival, and growth performance in aquaculture has been recently banned due to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that pose a serious threat to the environment and consumers of aquatic organisms. Hence, the need for an alternative approach based on sustainable farming practices is warranted. Probiotic, prebiotic, and synbiotic use in tilapia production is considered a viable, safe, and environmentally friendly alternative that enhances growth performance, feed utilization, immunity, disease resistance, and fish survival against pathogens and environmental stress. Their inclusion in fish diets and or rearing water improves the general wellbeing of fish. Hence, this review aims at presenting research findings from the use of probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics and their effect on survival, growth, growth performance, gut morphology, microbial abundance, enzyme production, immunity, and disease resistance in tilapia aquaculture, while highlighting several hematological, blood biochemical parameters, and omics techniques that have been used to assess fish health. Furthermore, gaps in existing knowledge are addressed and future research studies have been recommended.

Abstract
In livestock production, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) represent the most widespread microorganisms used as probiotics. For such critical use, these bacteria must be correctly identified and characterized to ensure their safety and efficiency. Recently, probiotics have become highly recognized as supplements for humans and in particular for animals because of their beneficial outcome on health improvement and well-being maintenance. Various factors, encompassing dietary and management constraints, have been demonstrated to tremendously influence the structure, composition, and activities of gut microbial communities in farm animals. Previous investigations reported the potential of probiotics in animal diets and nutrition. But a high rate of inconsistency in the efficiency of probiotics has been reported. This may be due, in a major part, to the dynamics of the gastrointestinal microbial communities. Under stressing surroundings, the direct-fed microbials may play a key role as the salient limiting factor of the severity of the dysbiosis caused by disruption of the normal intestinal balance. Probiotics are live microorganisms, which confer health benefits on the host by positively modifying the intestinal microflora. Thus, the aim of this review is to summarize and to highlight the positive influence of probiotics and potential probiotic microbe supplementation in animal feed with mention of several limitations.

Abstract
The outbreak of acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) has caused great economic losses to the shrimp culture sector. However, the use of antibiotics to fight this disease has resulted in negative impacts on human health and the environment. Thus, the use of natural alternatives to antibiotics may be a better solution. In this study, four Bacillus species obtained from the guts of shrimps (Fenneropenaeus penicillatus and Penaeus monodon) showed antimicrobial activity against the AHPND-causing Vibrio parahaemolyticus strain 3HP using the cross-streaking and agar spot methods. Two of the Bacillus isolates, B2 and BT, also showed good probiotic properties, exhibiting tolerance to bile, good adhesion to shrimp mucus, non-hemolytic, susceptibility to antibiotics and being safe towards hosts. Moreover, a seaweed-probiotic blend (a combination of Bacillus B2 and 20 mg/ml of the red seaweed Gracilaria sp.) exhibited synergistic in vitro inhibition against V. parahaemolyticus strain 3HP, with an observed inhibition zone of 5.0 mm. The broth co-culture experiment results further indicated that the seaweed-probiotic blend inhibited V. parahaemolyticus through competitive exclusion. The in vivo challenge trials also confirmed that this seaweed-probiotic blend significantly reduced the mortality of shrimps post-challenge with the AHPND-causing V. parahaemolyticus strain 3HP (p < 0.05) compared to the negative control (mortality rate = 13.88% vs 72.19%). Thus, this seaweed-probiotic blend may serve as an alternative to antibiotics in controlling the outbreak of AHPND.

Abstract
Probiotics play significant roles in enhancing systemic immunity, improving intestinal balance and feed value, enhancing enzymatic digestion, and inhibiting pathogenic microorganisms of freshwater fish. Probiotics from an identical organism's gastrointestinal system promote effective colonization and provide greater benefits than other sources. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of probiotic bacteria isolated from the intestines of freshwater fishes for a dietary supplement of freshwater aquaculture. A total of 120 isolates were collected from freshwater fishes of Channa striata, Puntius filamentosus, Oreochromis mossambicus, Cirrhinus mrigala, and Rasbora daniconius. Seven of these isolates exhibited antagonistic activity against fish pathogens: Aeromonas hydrophila, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis, the isolates were identified as Enterococcus sp., Lactococcus lactis, Weissella cibaria, and Limosilactobacillus fermentum. Of these tolerates, L. fermentum URLP18 isolated from C. mrigala exhibited high tolerance to low acidic (pH 2.0) and high bile salt (2%) concentrations, exhibiting a significant hydrophobicity and extracellular enzyme secretions like amylase, protease, and lipase. In vitro evaluations on intestinal mucus indicate that L. fermentum URLP18 have strong adherence capacity, and its survival rate increased after being administered to Artemia nauplii. The results suggest that L. fermentum URLP18 has high probiotic potential and is an effective dietary supplement for freshwater aquaculture.

Abstract
Probiotics have been defined as live microorganisms that when administered in adequate amounts confer health benefits to the host. The use of probiotics in aquaculture is an attractive bio-friendly method to decrease the impact of infectious diseases, but is still not an extended practice. Although many studies have investigated the systemic and mucosal immunological effects of probiotics, not all of them have established whether they were actually capable of increasing resistance to different types of pathogens, being this the outmost desired goal. In this sense, in the current paper, we have summarized those experiments in which probiotics were shown to provide increased resistance against bacterial, viral or parasitic pathogens. Additionally, we have reviewed what is known for fish probiotics regarding the mechanisms through which they exert positive effects on pathogen resistance, including direct actions on the pathogen, as well as positive effects on the host.

Abstract
The effects of different levels of dietary Enterococcus casseliflavus (EC-001), as a potential probiotic, were investigated on the growth performance, hemato-biochemical parameters, immune responses, and resistance to Aeromonas hydrophila infection in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) fingerlings. Accordingly, fish (N = 720; 12.0 ± 0.5 g) were distributed into four treatments receiving different dietary levels of E. casseliflavus, EC-001 (0 [control], 1 × 107, 108, and 109 CFU g-1 feed), for 8 weeks. The fish fed with a diet containing 109 CFU g-1 showed the highest weight gain and specific growth rate, along with the lowest feed conversion ratio, compared with the control group (P < 0.05). Red and white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, neutrophils, and monocytes significantly increased in the fish fed with 1 × 108 and 109 CFU g-1 (P < 0.05). Dietary inclusion of 1 × 108 and 109 CFU g-1 significantly increased serum total protein, albumin, and immunoglobulin content (P < 0.05). Feeding the fish with 1 × 109 CFU g-1 resulted in a significant increase in serum and skin mucus lysozyme activity compared with the other groups (P < 0.05). Complement component 3 and skin mucus protease activity were also significantly higher in all the fish treated with dietary E. casseliflavus (EC-001) compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The cumulative mortality in the treated fish was lower (ranging from 10 to 22%) than the control group (31%) after challenging the fish with A. hydrophila infection, while the fish fed with E. casseliflavus (EC-001) at 1 × 109 CFU g-1 exhibited the lowest mortality rate (P < 0.05). In conclusion, our results revealed the potential probiotic effects of E. casseliflavus (EC-001) for enhancing growth performance, immunity, and disease resistance of common carp.

Abstract
In recent years, considerable and growing attention has been given to the application of host-associated microorganisms as a more suitable source of probiotics in aquaculture sector. Herein, we isolated and screened the olive flounder gut microbiota for beneficial bacterial strains that might serve as potential probiotics in a low fishmeal extruded aquafeed. Among the ten identified isolates, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens SK4079 and B. subtilis SK4082 were screened out based on their heat-resistant ability as well as enzymatic and non-hemolytic activities. Although both strains were well able to utilize carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), xylan, and soybean meal (SBM) as a single carbon source in the minimal nutrient M9 medium, B. subtilis exhibited significantly higher cellulase, xylanase, and protease activities than B. amyloliquefaciens. The two selected strains were well able to degrade the undesirable anti-nutritional component of the SBM, which would limit its utilization as protein source in aquafeed industry. Significantly higher biofilm formation capacity and notably stronger adhesive interactions with the flounder's skin mucus were detected in B. subtilis than B. amyloliquefaciens. Immobilization of the spores from the selected strains, in a SBM complex carrier, remarkably enhances their thermal resistance at 120 °C for 5 min and different drying conditions. It was also interesting to learn that the B. subtilis spores could survive and remain viable after being sprayed onto extruded low-fish meal feed pellets for as long as 6 months. Overall, the findings of the present study could help the food/feed industries achieve their goal of developing cost-effective yet efficient products.

Abstract
AbstractThe present study was carried out to evaluate the dietary effects of host‐associated lactic acid bacteria on growth performance, metabolic enzyme activities, and immune response of Macrobrachium rosenbergii juveniles. To formulate the test diets, a control (Con) diet was supplemented with a commercial probiotic and three host‐derived bacteria Enterococcus faecalis (EC), Lactococcus lactis I (LC‐I), and L. lactis II (LC‐II), which were previously isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of adult individuals of M. rosenbergii. Juvenile M. rosenbergii (0.65 ± 0.008 g) were randomly stocked at 20 individuals/100 L of fiberglass tanks with three replications for each test diet. After 50 days, juveniles fed the diets LC‐I and LC‐II showed significantly higher (p < .05) weight gain, specific growth rate, and the lowest feed conversion ratio. The analyses of glutamic oxaloacetate transaminase and glutamic pyruvate transaminase in muscle and hepatopancreas revealed significantly (p < .05) reduced values in LC‐I fed juveniles. The total hemocyte count and phenoloxidase activity were significantly increased (p < .05) in LC‐I and LC‐II fed juveniles. The relative mRNA expression patterns of immune‐related α2‐M, LGBP, ProPO, Cu, Zn‐SOD, TG, PE, AKP, and ACP genes were significantly (p < .05) upregulated in juveniles fed with LC‐I followed by the diet LC‐II. Finally, the study suggests that the growth performance and immune response of M. rosenbergii can be improved through supplementation of host‐associated L. lactis bacteria for its higher production.

Abstract
Aquaculture is one of the fastest-growing economic activities worldwide; shrimp production by aquaculture is around 70% or more of the total consumed. The development of this activity is inducing great benefits in the production of food and jobs; however, shrimp aquaculture is also generating; (1) ecological imbalance by pelagic species overexploitation to produce fish ingredients, (2) bays contamination by inappropriate waste management and (3) pathogens proliferation by antibiotics abuse. In this sense, a significant number of regulations and legal restrictions have been imposed; thus, aquaculture is no longer considered a profitable activity. Therefore, significant and innovative technologies need to be applied to ensure the sustainability and profitability of this activity. In this sense, probiotic bacteria are being used in aquaculture to improve feed intake, modulate gut microbiota and control pathogen proliferation. This work summarizes the results from researchers who worked extensively to show how probiotic bacteria can improve shrimp aquaculture development.

Abstract
Osmotic stress is associated with heightened immune functions and altered microbiota in the fish intestine. In this study, we explored the effects of hypoosmotic stress on the intestine of euryhaline yellowfin seabream (Acanthopagrus latus) after acute exposure to brackish water, low-saline water, and freshwater environments. The results showed that hypoosmotic stress reshaped the composition of the microbial community and altered the gene expression in the intestine. Probiotics Lactobacillus and Pseudomonas showed higher relative abundance in a brackish water environment, whereas pathogenic bacteria, including Vibrio and Aeromonas, were more abundant in the freshwater environment. At the transcriptional level, osmoregulation-related genes were identified as up/down regulated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) as well as a series of immune-related DEGs associated with pathogen recognition, antimicrobial ability, pro-inflammatory cytokines, cell apoptosis, and antioxidant defense. Physiological analysis showed that Na+ K+-ATPase activity was significantly inhibited by hypoosmotic stress in freshwater. Meanwhile, the intestinal antioxidant defense system of yellowfin seabream was challenged. Correlation network analysis demonstrated the close interactions among intestinal microbes, differentially expressed genes, and physiological parameters. This study provides the critical insights into the function of the intestine fish encountering hypoosmotic stress.

Abstract
The immunostimulatory potential of the marine yeast Yarrowia lipolytica (D1 and N6 strains) administered orally was evaluated in the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Yeasts and commercial glucans were mixed with a commercial feed to formulate diets with a 1.1% concentration of immunostimulants. The shrimp were fed daily for a period of 21 days. Weekly determinations were performed for immunological parameters in hemolymph, such as total hemocyte count (THC), lysozyme activity (LYZ), prophenoloxidase activity, antioxidant enzymatic activities (superoxide dismutase [SOD], catalase [CAT], and peroxidases), and bactericidal activity against Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Expression profiles of penaeidin (PEN), lysozyme (LYZ), and prophenoloxidase (proPO) immune genes were evaluated in hemocytes. In general, an increase in the immune parameters was observed in shrimp fed yeast diet compared to glucan and the control diets. Yarrowia lipolytica, especially strain N6, provided maximum immunostimulatory effects evidenced by the increase of immune parameters (THC, LYZ, SOD, CAT) and gene expression profile. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that Y. lipolytica had immunostimulatory effects and increased bactericidal activity in L. vannamei hemocytes against V. parahaemolyticus. These findings open the path for the potential application of Y. lipolytica-based immunostimulant for shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
Introduction. Various cultures of microorganisms have recently been used to accelerate technological processes. In this regard, it appears highly relevant to study the action of beneficial microorganisms on the components of food systems.
Study objects and methods. The study objects included a model mixture of beef muscle and pork fat tissue with 2% salt, as well as a model protein. Lactobacillus plantarum and Staphylococcus carnosus were used in an amount of 1×107 CFU/g of raw material. The compositions of free amino and fatty acids, carbohydrates, and other components were analyzed by liquid and gas chromatography with mass-selective detection.
Results and discussion. We studied the effect of L. plantarum and S. carnosus on protein, lipid, and carbohydrate components of food systems based on animal raw materials. We found that the combined effect of the cultures was by 25% as effective as their individual use at 4×109 CFU/kg of raw material. The three-week hydrolysis of proteins to free amino acids was almost a third more effective than when the cultures were used separately. The synergistic effect of L. plantarum and S. carnosus on fat components was not detected reliably. Free monosaccharides formed more intensively when the cultures were used together. In particular, the amount of free lactose almost doubled, compared to the cultures’ individual action.
Conclusion. We described culture-caused quantitative changes in the main components of animal-based food systems: amino acids, fatty acids, carbohydrates, and basic organic compounds. Also, we identified substances that can affect the taste and aroma of final products when the cultures are used together or separately. These results make it possible to obtain products with a wide variety of sensory properties.

Abstract
The shrimp Penaeus monodon was used for the isolation of digestive enzyme producing host-associated probiotic bacteria. Gut was isolated from a healthy animal completely and morphologically different bacterial isolates were screened for the production of hydrolytic enzymes, such as, protease, amylase, lipase and cellulases. Based on their ability to produce enzymes, the potent probiotic bacteria were identified as Bacillus subtilis and B. licheniformis and these two were used for the preparation of probiotic diet for experimental trials. Probiotic diet was prepared by mixing the shrimp feed with 2 g probiotic/100 g artificial diet (F1), 4 g/100 g (F2), 6 g/100 g (F3), 8 g/100 g (F4) and 10 g/100 g (F5). Juvenile shrimp was fed with probiotic and control diet for a period of 7 weeks at 5 and 8% body weight for the first 3 and 7 weeks, respectively. After seven weeks, whole gut was dissected out and protease activity was estimated as 145 ± 12.3 U/g in control animal and increased as 710 ± 15.2 U/ g in F5 feed groups. Amylase activity was 139 ± 10.4 U/g in control and increased as 209 ± 13. 3 U/g in F5 group. Cellulase activities were 171 ± 9.3 in F5 groups and the control group showed only 102 ± 12.4 U/g. Lipase activity was 78 ± 3 U/g in F1 groups and it increased as 85 ± 5 U/g in F3 groups. These findings indicate the potential of host-associated bacteria to enhance the production of enzymes in the gut of juvenile P. monodon.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate whether the administration of commensal Shewanella sp. MR-7 (MR-7) could ameliorate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intestine dysfunction in turbot. Fish (body weight: 70.00 ± 2.00 g) were randomly divided into three groups including the control group treated with dough, the LPS group treated with dough plus LPS, and the LPS+MR-7 (LMR) group treated with dough plus LPS and MR-7. These three groups with 24 fish each were force-fed with 1 g dough daily for 7 continuous days. The results revealed that MR-7 administration ameliorated LPS-induced intestinal injury, showing higher intestinal villus and microvillus height. Further results showed that MR-7 could inhibit LPS-induced activation of TLR-NF-κB signaling thus maintaining the normal expression levels of cytokines and finally ameliorate the intestinal inflammatory response in turbot. Compared with the LPS group, LMR group had less goblet cells and lower mucin-2 expression level. Moreover, MR-7 restored LPS-induced down-regulation of tight junction protein-related gene expression (zonula occluden-1, occludin, tricellulin and claudin-3). Further investigations indicated that MR-7 partially counteracted LPS-induced changes in gut microbiota composition, enhanced the beneficial bacteria Lactobacillus and reduced the Pseudomonas, thus maintaining the overall microbiota balance. Taken together, the administration of MR-7 could effectively restore LPS-induced intestine function disorder in turbot by ameliorating inflammatory response, mucosal barrier dysfunction and microbiota dysbiosis.

Abstract
The application of probiotics for disease control in aquaculture is now a convincing approach towards replacement of antibiotics, which can cause adverse effects in aquatic animals and humans. In this study, we combined 2 probiotics, Lactobacillus acidophilus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae, with shrimp feed to create 2 formulas (WU8 and WU9), which were fed for 10 d to juvenile shrimp Penaeus vannamei. The shrimps were then subjected to a challenge infection with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, the causative agent of acute hepatopancreas necrosis disease (AHPND). The protective effects of probiotics against bacterial infection were investigated through histopathology of the hepatopancrease and immunological evaluation of shrimp. Both WU8 and WU9 probiotic mixtures (1:1, at 108 and 109 CFU kg diet-1) increased blasenzellen hepatopancreatic epithelial cells and reduced pathology caused by AHPND. After 10 d of feeding, hemocyte parameters, including the total hemocyte count, percent of granular hemocytes, and phenoloxidase activity, increased significantly and were still increasing at 24 h post infection. Crustin and penaeidin 3 genes were also highly upregulated in hemocytes before and after 24 h of bacterial challenge and significantly upregulated in the hepatopancreas 1 to 5 d post-infection. A significantly higher survival rate was observed in shrimp fed with the probiotic supplemented diet (>90%) in comparison to the control group (60%). In conclusion, probiotic mixtures of L. acidophilus and S. cerevisiae reduced hepatopancreas pathology and protected shrimp from a challenge with AHPND.
