Abstract
Decay-accelerating factor (DAF) is an essential member of the complement regulatory protein family that plays an important role in immune response and host homeostasis in mammals. However, the immune function of DAF has not been well characterized in bony fish. In this study, a complement regulatory protein named CiDAF was firstly characterized from Ctenopharyngodon idella and its potential roles were investigated in intestine following bacterial infection. Similar to mammalian DAFs, CiDAF has multiple complement control protein (CCP) functional domains, suggesting the evolutionary conservation of DAFs. CiDAF was broadly expressed in all tested tissues, with a relatively high expression level detected in the spleen and kidney. In vivo immune challenge experiments revealed that CiDAF strongly responded to bacterial pathogens (Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas veronii) and PAMPs (lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or muramyl dipeptide (MDP)) challenges. In vitro RNAi experiments indicated that knockdown of CiDAF could upregulate the expression of complement genes (C4b, C5 and C7) and inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β and IL-8). Moreover, 2000 ng/mL of CiDAF agonist progesterone effectively alleviated LPS- or MDP-induced intestinal inflammation by regulating expression of complement factors, TLR/PepT1 pathway genes and inflammatory cytokines. Overall, these findings revealed that CiDAF may act as a negative regulator of intestinal complement pathway and immune response to bacterial challenge in grass carp.

Abstract
The purpose of this research was to examine the potential effects of bentonite (BN) supplemented diets on growth, feed utilization, blood biochemistry, and histomorphology of Dicentrarchus labrax. Six treatments in triplicate were tested: B0, B0.5, B1.0, B1.5, B3.0, and B4.5, which represented fish groups fed diets supplemented with 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 3, and 4.5% BN, respectively. For 84 days, juveniles' seabass (initial weight = 32.73 g) were fed diets containing 46% protein, three times daily at 3% of body weight. With a 5% daily water exchange, underground seawater (32 ppt) was used. Findings revealed significant improvements in water quality (TAN and NH3), growth (FW, WG and SGR) and feed utilization (FCR, PER and PPV) in fish fed BN-supplemented diets, with the best values in favor of the B1.5 group. Additional enhancements in kidney function indicators (urea and uric acid) and liver enzymes were observed in fish of the BN-treated groups along with a decrease in cholesterol level in the B1.5 group. Further improvements in fish innate immunity (hemoglobin, red blood cells, glucose, total protein, globulin, and immunoglobulin IgM), antioxidant activity (total antioxidative capacity and catalase), and decreased cortisol levels in fish of the BN-treated groups. Histological examinations of the anterior and posterior intestines and liver in groups B1.5 and B3 revealed the healthiest organs. This study recommends BN at a concentration of 1.5% as a feed additive in the Dicentrarchus labrax diet.

Abstract
The adult worker bees were fed sucrose syrup or sucrose syrup supplemented with Lactobacillus helveticus KM7, prebiotic isomalto-oligosaccharide (IMO), or L. helveticus KM7 combined with IMO. Survival rate, gut microbiota, and gene expression of gut antimicrobial peptides in worker honey bees were determined. Administration of L. helveticus KM7 and IMO significantly increased the survival rate in worker bees relative to bees fed sucrose only. Then, higher concentration of both lactic acid bacteria and Bifidobacterium in the gut and lower counts of gut fungi, Enterococcus, and Bacteroides-Porphyromonas-Prevotella were observed in bees fed the combination of KM7 and IMO compared with control bees. The combination of L. helveticus KM7 with IMO showed a greater or comparable modulating effect on those bacteria relative to either KM7 or IMO alone. Furthermore, the combination treatment of L. helveticus KM7 and IMO enhanced mRNA expression of antimicrobial peptide genes, including Abaecin, Defensin, and the gene encoding prophenoloxidase (PPO) in the gut compared with both control bees and those either L. helveticus KM7 or IMO alone. These results suggest that the combination of L. helveticus KM7 and IMO synergistically modifies the gut microbiota and immunity and consequently improves the survival rate of Apis cerana adult workers.

Abstract
Lactococcosis, caused by the Gram-positive bacterium Lactococcus garvieae, is a major concern in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) farms, which are regularly affected by outbreaks especially during the summer/fall months. In these farms, unvaccinated healthy and symptomatic fish can coexist with vaccinated fish. In the present study, innate (leukogram, serum lysozyme activity, peroxidase activity, antiprotease activity, bactericidal activity, total IgM and total proteins), and specific immune parameters (serum antibodies to L. garvieae) were assessed in unvaccinated adult rainbow trout naturally exposed to the pathogen, with or without evidence of clinical signs, or subjected to vaccination. Blood was drawn from all three groups, and blood smears were prepared. Bacteria were found in the blood smears of 70% of the symptomatic fish but not in any of the asymptomatic fish. Symptomatic fish showed lower blood lymphocytes and higher thrombocytes than asymptomatic fish (p ≤ .05). Serum lysozyme and bactericidal activity did not vary substantially among groups; however, serum antiprotease and peroxidase activity were significantly lower in the unvaccinated symptomatic group than in the unvaccinated and vaccinated asymptomatic groups (p ≤ .05). Serum total proteins and total immunoglobulin (IgM) levels in vaccinated asymptomatic rainbow trout were significantly higher than in unvaccinated asymptomatic and symptomatic groups (p ≤ .05). Similarly, vaccinated asymptomatic fish produced more specific IgM against L. garvieae than unvaccinated asymptomatic and symptomatic fish (p ≤ .05). This preliminary study provides basic knowledge on the immunological relationship occurring between the rainbow trout and L. garvieae, potentially predicting health outcomes. The approach we proposed could facilitate infield diagnostics, and several non-specific immunological markers could serve as reliable indicators of the trout's innate ability to fight infection.

Abstract
Bioactive immunostimulants could be derived from different sources like plants, animals, microbes, algae, yeast, etc. Bioactive immunostimulants are the most significant role to enhance aquatic production, as well as the cost of this method, which is effective, non-toxic, and environment-friendly. These immunostimulants are supportive to increase the immune system, growth, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and disease resistance of aquatic animals' health and also improve aquatic animal feed. Diseases are mainly targeted to the immune system of aquatic organisms in such a way that different processes of bioactive immunostimulants progress are considered imperative techniques for the development of aquaculture production. Communicable infections are the main problem for aquaculture, while the mortality and morbidity connected with some outbreaks significantly limit the productivity of some sectors. Aquaculture is considered the mainly developing food production sector globally. Protein insists is an important issue in human nutrition. Aquaculture has been an exercise for thousands of years, and it has now surpassed capture fisheries as the most vital source of seafood in the world. Limited study reports are available to focal point on bioactive immunostimulants in aquaculture applications. This review report provides information on the nutritional administration of bioactive immunostimulants, their types, functions, and beneficial impacts on aquatic animals' health as well as for the feed quality development in the aquaculture industry. The scope of this review combined to afford various kinds of natural derived bioactive molecules utilization and their beneficial effects in aquaculture applications.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of a Jerusalem artichoke-supplemented diet on the blood chemistry, growth performance, intestinal morphology, expression of antioxidant-related genes, and disease resistance against Aeromonas veronii challenge in juvenile red tilapia. A completely randomized design (CRD) was followed to feed red tilapias with three experimental diets: control, 5.0 g/kg JA-supplemented (JA5), or 10.0 g/kg JA-supplemented (JA10) diets in triplicates for 4 weeks. The results revealed that the growth performance, weight gain (WG), specific growth rate (SGR), and average daily gain (ADG) of fish fed diets JA5 and JA10 were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those of fish fed the control diet. Fish fed the control diet had significantly higher T-bilirubin, D-bilirubin, and ALT in blood serum than fish fed JA5 and JA10, as well as higher BUN than fish fed JA5. The number of goblet cells in the proximal and distal parts of the intestine revealed that the number of acid, neutral, and double-staining mucous cells of fish fed diets JA5 and JA10 was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than in fish fed the control diet. The diets including the prebiotic (JA5 and JA10) were associated with a significant increase in the expression of gpx1 and gst antioxidant-related genes and disease resistance against A. veronii in juvenile red tilapia. Therefore, JA5 and JA10 can be employed as promising prebiotics for sustainable red tilapia farming.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the combined effects of thyme essential oil (TEO) and prebiotic (Immunogen ®) on growth performance, hematological parameters, innate immunity, and oxidative status of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. For this purpose, the fish (11.92 ± 0.06 g) were fed (3% of biomass) experimental diets that contained 0 (Control; without Immunogen and/or TEO); 1% TEO + 0.1% Immunogen (T1); 1% TEO + 0.2% Immunogen (T2); 2% TEO + 0.1% Immunogen (T3) and 2% TEO + 0.2% Immunogen (T4) for 60 days. According to results, all experimental treatments exhibited similar final weight, weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), and survival rate (SR), which were significantly higher than those of the control treatment. Although all treatments reduced the feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the control group, the lowest value was observed in T4. All experimental treatments showed a significant increase in amylase and protease activity compared to the control group. Moreover, the fish fed on T4 and T1 diets showed the highest and lowest lipase activity. Dietary TEO and Immunogen supplementations significantly increased WBC count and Hb level compared to the control group. Fish fed on control and T2 diets displayed lower hematocrit than fish fed on other experimental diets. The highest and lowest MCH index were recorded in T3 and control groups, respectively. The fish fed diets supplemented with T3 diet presented significantly higher MCV index compared to the control and T2 treatment. All experimental treatments exhibited similar AST, and ALP activities, which were significantly lower than those of the control group. Also, the lowest ALT activity was observed in T2 and T4 treatments compared to other groups. Dietary TEO and Immunogen supplementations significantly enhanced skin mucus total Ig, total protein level, and ACH50, protease, and lysozyme. All experimental treatments exhibited enhanced intestine total Ig, ACH50, and lysozyme level. Dietary thyme essential oil and Immunogen supplementations significantly enhanced liver antioxidant parameters including catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and decreased MDA production compared to fish fed on control diet. As a result, it can be suggested that the combination of thyme essential oil and Immunogen (specially 2% TEO + 0.2% Immunogen) is useful for enhancing the yield and well-being of farmed rainbow trout.

Abstract
The present study investigated the effects of dietary Astragalus Propinquus schischkin polysaccharides on growth, immune responses, antioxidants responses and inflammation-related genes expression in Channa argus. Channa argus were randomly divided into 5 groups and fed 5 levels diets of A. propinquus schischkin polysaccharides (0, 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg) for 56 days. The results showed, dietary A. propinquus schischkin polysaccharides addition can increase the final body weight, weight gain and specific growth rate, decrease the feed conversion ratio of Channa argus. And dietary A. propinquus schischkin polysaccharides supplementation can increase the levels of serum superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, lysozyme, complement 3, complement 4, immunoglobulin M and alkaline phosphatase, decrease the levels of serum malondialdehyde, cortisol, aspartate aminotransferase and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase. Furthermore, dietary A. propinquus schischkin polysaccharides can decrease the gene expression levels of interleukin-1β, interleukin-, tumor necrosis factor-α and nuclear factor-κB, increase the gene expression levels of glucocorticoid receptor in liver, spleen, kidney, intestine. To sum up, dietary A. propinquus schischkin polysaccharides can accelerate growth, enhance immune responses and antioxidants responses, regulate inflammation-related genes expression in Channa argus and the optimum amount is 1000 mg/kg.

Plant-based and immunostimulant-enhanced diets modulate oxidative stress, immune and haematological indices in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). ACTA VET BRNO 2021. Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of three commercial diets, standard, immunostimulant-supplemented (β-glucan, vitamins C and E) and plant-based, on the degree of oxidative stress in tissues of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Selected immune and haematological indices were measured and challenge with Aeromonas salmonicida was conducted. The plant-based diet systemically modulated all oxidative stress biomarkers (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances; reduced and oxidised glutathione and their ratio) in the intestine. The ratio was elevated in all organs (liver, kidney, muscle and intestine) and an enhancement of respiratory burst and complement activity was observed even in the control fish. With the standard diet, an elevation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in the intestine and a decrease in some immune indices appeared after challenge. Less distinctive changes and the lowest mortality rate (the highest being with the plant-based feed) were obtained with immunostimulants. Increased total immunoglobulin, relative lymphocytosis and a decrease in the phagocyte count were observed. This study contributes especially by a thorough examination of oxidative stress indices in different tissues. The exact composition of these commercial diets is a trade secret; however, knowledge of their effects is extremely important for fish farmers using them; therefore, this study has a great practical impact.

Abstract
Abstract
The present study evaluated the effects of dietary inulin on growth performance, body composition, serum, biochemical, and mucus immune factors; as well as innate immune responses of rainbow trout fry challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. Four diets were prepared using a commercially available fish feed as a basal diet and different levels of prebiotic inulin incorporation; 0 (control), 1, 2, and 3%; referred to as C, T1, T2, and T3, respectively. The findings of the 60-day feeding trial showed that inulin inclusion affected final weight, food conversion rate (FCR), and specific growth rate (SGR) compared to that of the control group (P < 0.05), in which the lowest FCR was observed in T3. Body composition analysis revealed that inulin significantly increased protein content and decreased lipid levels, especially in the T1 and T2 groups. The lowest ash level was noticed in T2 (P < 0.05). Blood total protein, albumin, globulin, cholesterol, and glucose were not affected by inulin supplementation (P > 0.05). Analysis of humoral immune responses showed that the inulin supplements significantly increased lysozyme and complement activities (P < 0.05), as well as higher red blood cell count (RBC) and hemoglobin (Hb) in fish, fed 2% inulin, while no significant differences were observed among other treatments (P > 0.05). The mucosal parameters; including lysozyme, alkaline phosphatase (excluding ACH50); protease activities; and total immunoglobulin (IgM) improved significantly (P < 0.05), particularly in the T2 group. The T2 group also demonstrated the highest survival rate among all groups. The present findings indicate that dietary administration of inulin promotes growth and biochemical parameters, as well as serum immunity and mucosal immune responses of rainbow trout, in which a 2% inclusion produced the best results.

Abstract
In this study, the effect of dietary supplementation of mannan oligosaccharide (MOS) + β-glucan (Immunogen®) was investigated on growth performance, body composition, gut microflora, innate immune responses and gene expression of some proinflammatory cytokines in shabout (Tor grypus). Shabout fingerlings (35 ± 1.2 g) were fed with basal diet (control) or basal diet supplemented with Immunogen® at 0.5, 1 and 1.5% of feed for 90 days. According to the results, growth parameters were significantly improved in fish fed with prebiotic (1 and 1.5%) for 90 days (p < 0.05). The carcass protein content was significantly higher in fish nourished by prebiotic at 1.5% of feed for 90 days compared to fish received the basal diet (p < 0.05). Feeding with various levels of Immunogen® resulted in the significant promotion of the population of intestinal Lactobacillus spp. in the prebiotic-treated groups relative to the control group (p < 0.05). Serum total globulin was significantly higher in all prebiotic groups relative to the control group at day 60. Serum bactericidal and lysozyme activities were significantly (p < 0.05) elevated after feeding with dietary prebiotic at all intervals (days 30, 60 and 90). However, the highest serum bactericidal activities were recorded in fish fed with Immunogen® at 1.5% of diet (p < 0.05). The transcription levels of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin 8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were significantly increased in the head kidney of fish treated with dietary prebiotic at all intervals. The results show that dietary supplementation with Immunogen®, particularly at the level of 1.5%, can positively alter growth parameters, carcass protein, intestinal microflora and immune responses of shabout.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate the potential effects of dietary marjoram extract on growth performance, health, and disease resistance in common carp, Cyprinus carpio. To this purpose, the fish were assigned into four treatments and fed by diets supplemented with 0 (control), 100, 200, and 400 mg marjoram extract kg-1 over eight weeks and then challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila. According to the results, 200 mg kg-1 dietary marjoram extract inclusion showed the highest final weight, weight gain, and specific growth rate, and lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR). White blood cell number, Red blood cells, hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin were markedly increased particularly at 200 mg kg-1 treatment. Marjoram extract significantly increased plasma superoxide dismutase activity and decreased malondialdehyde level compared to the control treatment. Plasma complement and lysozyme activities and total immunoglobulin levels, mucosal complement, lysozyme and alkaline phosphatase activities and immunoglobulin levels were significantly increased compared to the control group. The lowest post-challenge survival rate was observed in the control treatment, whereas the highest value was related to the 200 mg kg-1 marjoram treatment. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that, marjoram extract is a suitable feed supplements for common carp, as it stimulates the fish growth, antioxidant, and immune systems, which suppress the fish mortality during Aeromonas septicemia. According to the results, 200 mg marjoram extract kg-1 is recommended for carp feed formulation.

Abstract
The present study aimed at evaluating the supplementation of dietary Pistacia vera hulls derived polysaccharide (PHDP) at varying levels (0, 2.5, 5, and 10 g/kg diet) on the growth rate, digestive enzyme activity, immune response, and antioxidative capacity of Nile tilapia. After the feeding trial (60 days), fish were injected intraperitoneally with Aeromonas hydrophila, and the cumulative mortality was calculated for 10 days. The final body weight, weight gain, specific growth rate, survival rate, amylase activity, red blood cells, hemoglobin, serum total protein, and serum lysozyme activity (LZM) were significantly higher in fish fed PHDP at 5 and 10 g/kg than fish fed 0 and 2.5 g/kg diet (P ≤ 0.05). However, the feed conversion ratio and glucose levels were significantly decreased by 5 and 10 g PHDP/kg diet. Further, the protease digestive activity, serum alkaline phosphatase, and serum alternative complement (ACH50) had higher values in fish fed 5 g PHDP/kg diet than tilapia fed 0 g PHDP/kg diet (P ≤ 0.05). The serum protease and immunoglobulin (Ig) presented the highest values in fish fed 10 g PHDP/kg diet followed by fish fed 5 g PHDP/kg diet (P ≤ 0.05). The LZM, ACH50, and Ig in the mucus samples were significantly higher in fish fed 5 or 10 g PHDP/kg diet than fish fed 0 g PHDP/kg diet (P ≤ 0.05). The levels of superoxide dismutase and catalase in the liver tissue was significantly higher in fish fed 5 or 10 g PHDP/kg diet than fish fed 2.5 g PHDP/kg diet (P ≤ 0.05). On the other hand, malondialdehyde concentration was significantly lower in tilapia fed 5 and 10 g PHDP/kg diet than tilapia fed 0 and 2.5 g PHDP/kg diet (P ≤ 0.05). The lowest mortality rate and the highest relative percentage survival were in fish fed 5 g/kg followed by 10 g level after 10 days of A. hydrophila injection. Accordingly, dietary PHDP at 5-10 g/kg is recommended to improve the growth performance, antioxidative capacity, immune response, and resistance against A. hydrophila in Nile tilapia.

Abstract
Effects of dietary Lactobacillus plantarum (KC426951) on growth and innate responses of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus were evaluated in biofloc technology system and stagnant-renewal culture system (SRCS). The 90-day-long experiment contained four treatments: SRCS without probiotic (T1), SRCS with probiotic (T2), biofloc without probiotic (T3), and biofloc with probiotic (T4). The administration dose of probiotic was 2 × 108 CFU kg-1 diet. At the end of experiment, the mean final weights, specific growth rates, feed conversion ratios, and total biomass were significantly (P < 0.05) better in BFT treatments, with no significant effect of probiotic on these parameters in both culture systems. Meanwhile, skin mucosal parameters including total protein (TP), lysozyme (LYZ), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and protease (PRO) activity were significantly enhanced following probiotic supplementation. T4 treatment displayed a significantly higher LYZ and ALP activity in mucus versus other treatments. Also, serum alternative complement activity was significantly heightened in probiotic-supplemented fish. Superoxide dismutase activity in T4 was detected higher than that of SRCS groups. The results of the current study demonstrated the enhancement of some mucosal and serum innate responses of Nile tilapia in both culture systems upon L. plantarum (KC426951) supplementation.

Abstract
Ghrelin is a peptide hormone secreted by gastrointestinal tract which regulates multiple physiological processes such as appetite, metabolism, growth and gonad development in fish. In the present study, the effects of ghrelin on hybrid tilapia infected with Aeromonas hydrophila are elucidated. Juvenile hybrid tilapia fish (20.0 ± 5.0 g) were intraperitoneally injected with 0, 0.1, 1.0, or 10.0 ng/g ghrelin/body weight synthetic ghrelin alone or in combination with A. hydrophila (0.5 × 106 CFU). At 10 days post treatment, the survival rate in the group that received 1.0 ng/g ghrelin/body weight ghrelin in combination with A. hydrophila was higher (66.66%) than that of the Ah group (13.33%) that received A. hydrophila alone. In tilapia that received ghrelin injections, reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels tended to increase at 5 h, while injection of 10.0 ng/g ghrelin/body weight ghrelin resulted in a significant decrease in ROS levels at 10 h. No changes in serum immune or antioxidant-related indicators were observed in fish injected with A. hydrophila compared to controls. However, ghrelin injection decreased Albumin (ALB), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), lysozyme (LZM) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Histological analysis showed that ghrelin injection alleviated the pathological changes in liver and spleen caused by A. hydrophila infection. Overall, the expression of HSP70, IL-1β, and TGF-β in the liver tended to upregulate compared to the control. In the kidney, HSP70, IL-1β and TGF-β levels were increased, and TNF-α expression levels were decreased compared to the control. The HSP70 level in the spleen was decreased, and IL-1β, TGF-β, and TNF-α were expressed at significantly higher levels in the spleen in the tilapia that received ghrelin injections. Taken together, our results indicate that injection with 1.0 ng/g ghrelin/body weight ghrelin may effectively protect juvenile hybrid tilapia against A. hydrophila infection by improving hematological indicators, maintaining normal histology and regulating cytokine gene expression.

Abstract
The dietary effects of a native medicinal plant from Iran, common mallow (Malvae sylvestris), was evaluated on growth performance, innate immune parameters, mucosal immune parameters, and resistance of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) against Yersinia ruckeri. Therefore, 360 fish (initial weight 10.42 ± 0.09 g) were randomly distributed into 12 fiberglass tanks. Experimental diets supplemented with 0 (as control- C), 1% (M1), 3% (M2) and 5% (M3) levels of M. sylvestris flowers extract were fed to the fish based on 3% of body weight for 8 weeks. At the terminal sampling, growth performance, liver and digestive enzymes activities, blood and mucosal immune responses were determined. Results showed that M2 and M3 had greater final weight, weight gain, SGR, survival rate and lower FCR; higher levels of total protein, albumin, globulin, and lower cortisol levels in comparison to control; 5% extract also lowered cholesterol and glucose levels as well as Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) activity. We reported higher values of hematocrit, hemoglobin, Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), White Blood Cell (WBC), Red Blood Cell (RBC) and lymphocytes for treated groups. Innate immune responses (Alternative complement activity (ACH50) in M2 and M3 group, total Immunoglobulin (Ig) and lysozyme in M3), mucosal immune parameters (ACH50, total Ig for M2 and M3 group and lysozyme in all treated groups) were enhanced. Activities of digestive enzymes (protease in all treated groups, amylase for 3 and 5%, while lipase only for 5%) and lower activity of liver ALT enzyme in individuals treated with highest dose was observed. Overall results indicated that the extract can positively affect growth performance and immune responses of rainbow trout.

Abstract
Adding immunopotentiators to plant protein based diets has been a feasible way to improve fish growth performance and healthy status. In this study, an 8-week trial was carried out to explore the effects of resveratrol, a natural polyphenolic compound, on growth performance, anti-oxidative capacity and immune responses in turbot fed soybean meal based diet. As the results showed, replacement 45% fish meal with soybean meal (SBM) significantly depressed the fish growth, feed utilization and the heights of villi and microvilli in distal intestine. The mRNA levels of hepatic antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (sod), glutathione peroxidase (gsh-px) and peroxiredoxin 6 (prx 6), were highly inhibited in SBM group. The inflammation related genes in intestine were also responsive to soybean meal. Supplying resveratrol showed no effects on fish growth performance but significantly restored the intestinal morphology and improved the mRNA levels of hepatic antioxidant enzymes as well as the activity of SOD. Meanwhile, resveratrol significantly improved the mRNA levels of anti-inflammatory cytokine transforming growth factor-β and inhibited the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α (tnf-ɑ), interleukin-1β (il-1β) and interleukin-8 (il-8). The results indicate that resveratrol could attenuate the oxidative stress and inflammatory response induced by soybean meal in turbot. This study shows resveratrol is an effective immunopotentiator to carnivorous fishes fed plant protein sources.

Abstract
Aeromonas hydrophila is the causative agent of bacterial septicemia that is frequently observed in grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idellus. In this study, we evaluated the biological parameters and immune enzymes in the liver of grass carp following A. hydrophila infection and quantified the alterations in liver histology using a semi-quantitative system. For the biological parameters, we found that the liver somatic index (LSI) was more sensitive than Fulton's condition factor (CF) and was significantly decreased at three days post-injection (DPI). At the immune enzyme level, the level of peroxidase (POD) in the liver significantly increased at 1 and 3 DPI. The activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) significantly increased at 3 DPI. Similarly, acid phosphatase (ACP) activity significantly increased at 1, 3, and 5 DPI. Histologically, the results indicated that the liver index at 3, 5, and 7 DPI was significantly higher than that of control groups. The regressive alterations as the highly variable reactions patterns and its index at 5 DPI was significantly higher than that of 1, 21 DPI, and the control groups. Based on our results, we suggest that grass carp resist A. hydrophila infection via an innate immune mechanism in the liver. The findings of this study will help elucidate the underlying mechanisms of resistance to A. hydrophila infection.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate effects of dietary Lactobacillus delbrueckii (L. delbrueckii) on immune response, disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila), antioxidant capability and growth performance of Cyprinus carpio Huanghe var. 450 fish (mean weight of 1.05 ± 0.03 g) were randomly distributed into five groups that fed diets containing different levels of L. delbrueckii (0, 1 × 105, 1 × 106, 1 × 107 and 1 × 108 CFU g-1) for 8 weeks. The results showed that intestinal immune parameters such as lysozyme, acid phosphatase, and myeloperoxidase activities, immunoglobulin M content, and the survival rate were improved in fish fed with 1 × 106 and 1 × 107 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii. In addition, 1 × 107 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii supplementation down-regulated mRNA levels of TNF-α, IL-8, IL-1β and NF-κBp65, and up-regulated IL-10 and TGF-β mRNA levels in the intestine. The survival rate was significantly (P < 0.05) higher (68.33%) in fish fed 1 × 106 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii than the control diet-fed group (40%) after challenge by A. hydrophila. Fish fed with diet containing 1 × 106 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii showed higher antioxidant enzyme activities such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and lower MDA concentrations than those of the control group (P < 0.05). The relative gene expression (SOD, CAT, GPX) showed the same trend with their activities. In addition, the growth performance was significantly improved in fish fed with the diet containing 1 × 106 and 1 × 107 CFU g-1L. delbrueckii (P < 0.05). These results demonstrated that dietary optimal levels of L. delbrueckii enhanced immunity, disease resistance against A. hydrophila antioxidant capability and growth performance in Cyprinus carpio Huanghe var.

Abstract
The present study evaluated the effect of dietary sodium butyrate (SB) supplementation on the growth and immune function in the proximal intestine (PI), middle intestine (MI) and distal intestine (DI) of young grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella). The fish were fed one powdery sodium butyrate (PSB) diet (1000.0 mg kg-1 diet) and five graded levels of microencapsulated sodium butyrate (MSB) diets: 0.0 (control), 500.0, 1000.0, 1500.0 and 2000.0 mg kg-1 diet for 60 days. Subsequently, a challenge test was conducted by injection of Aeromonas hydrophila. The results indicated that optimal SB supplementation improved the fish growth performance (percent weight gain, specific growth rate, feed intake and feed efficiency) and intestinal growth and function (intestine weight, intestine length, intestinal somatic index, folds height, trypsin, chymotrypsin, lipase and amylase activities), increased beneficial bacteria lactobacillus amount and butyrate concentration, decreased baneful bacteria Aeromonas and Escherichia coli amounts, reduced acetate and propionate concentrations, elevated lysozyme and acid phosphatase activities, increased complement (C3 and C4) and immunoglobulin M contents, and up-regulated β-defensin-1 (rather than DI), hepcidin, liver expressed antimicrobial peptide 2B (LEAP-2B) (except LEAP-2A), Mucin2, interleukin 10 (IL-10), IL-11 (rather than PI), transforming growth factor β1 (rather than PI), transforming growth factor β2 (rather than PI), IL-4/13A, IL-4/13B and inhibitor of κBα (IκBα) mRNA levels, whereas it down-regulated tumor necrosis factor α, interferon γ2, IL-1β (rather than PI), IL-6, IL-8, IL-15 (rather than PI), IL-17D (rather than PI), IL-12p35, IL-12p40 (rather than PI or MI), nuclear factor kappa B p65 (NF-κB p65) (except NF-κB p52), c-Rel (rather than PI or MI), IκB kinase β (IKKβ) (rather than PI), IKKγ (except IKKα), p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38MAPK) and MAPK kinase 6 mRNA levels in three intestinal segments of young grass carp (P < 0.05), suggesting that SB supplementation improves growth and intestinal immune function of fish. Furthermore, according to the positive effect, MSB was superior to PSB on improving growth and enhancing intestinal immune function of fish, and based on feed efficiency of young grass carp, the efficacy of MSB was 3.5-fold higher than that of PSB. Finally, based on percent weight gain, protecting fish against enteritis morbidity and lysozyme activity, the optimal SB supplementation (MSB as SB source) of young grass carp were estimated to be 160.8, 339.9 and 316.2 mg kg-1 diet, respectively.
