Impact of acid type for chitosan dissolution on the characteristics and biodegradability of cornstarch/chitosan based films

Development of New Edible Biodegradable Films Containing Camu-Camu and Agro-Industry Residue

The use of edible films has garnered significant interest in the food and environmental sectors due to their potential to prevent food deterioration and their biodegradability. This study aimed to develop and characterize edible films based on camu-camu residue, gelatin, and glycerol, evaluating their solubility, thermal, degradability, antioxidant, and water vapor permeability properties of the gelatin matrix. This is the first study incorporating camu-camu into a gelatin and glycerol matrix. The films produced with camu-camu residue were manageable and soluble, with some non-soluble residues, providing a shiny and well-presented appearance. In the biodegradation results, samples 3 and 4 appeared to degrade the most, being two of the three most affected samples in the triplicate. The films showed degradation modifications from the third day of the experiment. In the germination and plant growth analysis, sample 4 exhibited satisfactory development compared to the other samples, emerging as the sample with the best overall result in the analyses, attributed to a 13.84 cm increase in the growth of the upper part of the seedling. These results indicate that the produced materials have potential for food packaging applications.

Adsorption of Chromium (III) and Chromium (VI) Ions from Aqueous Solution Using Chitosan-Clay Composite Materials

In this work, biopolymer chitosan and natural clay were used to obtain composite materials. The overall aim of this study was to improve the properties (porosity, thermal stability and density) of pure chitosan beads by the addition of clay and to obtain a chitosan-based composite material for the adsorption of heavy metals from an aqueous solution, using Mongolian resources, and to study the adsorption mechanism. The natural clay was pre-treated with acid and heat to remove the impurities. The chitosan and pre-treated clay were mixed in different ratios (8:1, 8:2 and 8:3) for chemical processing to obtain a composite bead for the adsorption of chromium ions. The adsorption of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) was studied as a function of the solution pH, time, temperature, initial concentration of the chromium solution and mass of the composite bead. It was found that the composite bead obtained from the mixture of chitosan and treated clay with a mass ratio of 8:1 and 8:2 had the highest adsorption capacity (23.5 and 17.31 mg·g-1) for Cr(III) and Cr(VI), respectively, in the optimum conditions. The properties of the composite materials, prepared by mixing chitosan and clay with a ratio of 8:1 and 8:2, were investigated using XRD, SEM-EDS, BET and TG analysis. The adsorption mechanism was discussed based on the XPS analysis results. It was confirmed that the chromium ions were adsorbed in their original form, such as Cr(III) and Cr(VI), without undergoing oxidation or reduction reactions. Furthermore, Cr(III) and Cr(VI) were associated with the hydroxyl and amino groups of the composite beads during adsorption. The kinetic, thermodynamic and isothermal analysis of the adsorption process revealed that the interaction between the chitosan/clay composite bead and Cr(III) and Cr(VI) ions can be considered as a second-order endothermic reaction, as such the adsorption can be assessed using the Langmuir isotherm model. It was concluded that the composite bead could be used as an adsorbent for the removal of chromium ions.

A Novel Cryogenic Approach to 3D Printing Cytocompatible, Conductive, Hydrogel-Based Inks

In the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, developing cytocompatible 3D conductive scaffolds that mimic the native extracellular matrix is crucial for the engineering of excitable cells and tissues. In this study, a custom cryogenic extrusion 3D printer was developed, which afforded control over both the ink and printing surface temperatures. Using this approach, aqueous inks were printed into well-defined layers with high precision. A conductive hydrogel ink was developed from chitosan (CS) and edge-functionalised expanded graphene (EFXG). Different EFXG:CS ratios (between 60:40 and 80:20) were evaluated to determine both conductivity and printability. Using the novel customized cryogenic 3D printer, conductive structures of between 2 and 20 layers were produced, with feature sizes as small as 200 μm. The printed structures are mechanically robust and are electrically conducting. The highest Young's modulus and conductivity in a hydrated state were 2.6 MPa and ∼45 S/m, respectively. Cytocompatibility experiments reveal that the developed material supports NSC-34 mouse motor neuron-like cells in terms of viability, attachment, and proliferation. The distinctive mechanical and electrical properties of the 3D-printed structures would make them good candidates for the engineering of 3D-structured excitable cells. Moreover, this novel printing setup can be used to print other hydrogel-based inks with high precision and resolution.

Chitosan-Oxidized Pullulan Hydrogels Loaded with Essential Clove Oil: Synthesis, Characterization, Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Properties

Emulsion hydrogels are promising materials for encapsulating and stabilizing high amounts of hydrophobic essential oils in hydrophilic matrices. In this work, clove oil-loaded hydrogels (CS/OP-C) are synthesized by combining covalent and physical cross-linking approaches. First, clove oil (CO) was emulsified and stabilized in a chitosan (CS) solution, which was further hardened by Schiff base covalent cross-linking with oxidized pullulan (OP). Second, the hydrogels were subjected to freeze-thaw cycles and, as a result, the clove oil was stabilized in physically cross-linked polymeric walls. Moreover, due to cryogelation, the obtained hydrogels exhibited sponge-like porous interconnected morphology (160-250 µm). By varying the clove oil content in the starting emulsion and the degree of cross-linking, the hydrogels displayed a high water retention capacity (swelling ratios between 1300 and 2000%), excellent elastic properties with fast shape recovery (20 s) after 70% compression, and controlled in vitro clove oil release in simulated skin conditions for 360 h. Furthermore, the prepared clove oil-loaded hydrogels had a strong scavenging activity of 83% and antibacterial and antifungal properties, showing a bacteriostatic effect after 48 and 72 h against S. aureus and E. coli. Our results recommend the new clove oil-embedded emulsion hydrogels as promising future materials for application as wound dressings.

Chitosan/aloe vera gel coatings infused with orange peel essential oils for fruits preservation

Continuous fruit waste poses significant environmental and economic challenges, necessitating innovative fruit coating technologies. This research focuses on harnessing discarded orange peels to extract essential oil (OPEO), which is then integrated into a chitosan/aloe vera (CTS/AVG) matrix. The study comprehensively characterised the coating in terms of its physicochemical properties, antioxidant capacity, and antimicrobial efficacy. The investigation involved an analysis of particle size and distribution in the coating solutions, highlighting changes induced by the incorporation of orange peel essential oil (1 %, 2 % and 3 % v/w) into the chitosan/aloe vera (4:1 v/v) matrix, including particle size reduction and enhanced Brownian motion. The study quantifies a 33.21 % decrease in water vapour transmission rate and a reduction in diffusion coefficient from 9.26 × 10-11 m2/s to 6.20 × 10-11 m2/s following the addition of OPEO to CTS/AVG. Assessment of antioxidant potential employing DPPH radical scavenging assays, revealed that CTS/AVG/3 %OPEO exhibited notably superior radical scavenging activity compared to CTS/AVG, CTS/AVG/1 %OPEO, and CTS/AVG/2 %OPEO, demonstrated by its IC50 value of 17.01 ± 0.45 mg/mL. The study employs the well diffusion method, demonstrating a higher susceptibility of gram-negative bacteria to the coating solutions than gram-positive counterparts. Remarkably, CTS/AVG/3 %OPEO displayed the most pronounced inhibition against Escherichia coli, generating an inhibitory zone diameter of 14 ± 0.8 mm. The results collectively emphasised the potential of CTS/AVG/3 %OPEO as a viable natural alternative to synthetic preservatives within the fruit industry, attributed to its exceptional antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Chitosan Nanoparticles Modified by Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis Leaf Extract for Enhancement of Azithromycin Encapsulation Efficiency and Loading Capacity: In vitro Drug Release Study

The encapsulation efficiency and the loading capacity of azithromycin (AZI) were succesfully enhanced by modifying chitosan nanoparticle (NCh) with Anredera cordifolia leaf extract (ACLE), as demonstrated in this study. The prominent secondary metabolites in ACLE could establish a new chemical bonds with NCh's amino groups and partly improved the hydrophobicity of NCh, which leads to excellent AZI encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of 95.24 ± 1.30% and 55.74 ± 1.03%, respectively. TEM characterization demonstrated that the AZI-loaded ACLE-NCh nanoparticles were uniformly distributed with a particle size of 24.6 ± 2.9 nm. According to the result of in vitro drug release studies, AZI-loaded ACLE-NCh releases 1.12 ± 0.33% at a pH of 1.6 for 2 h, 82.05 ± 2.26% at a pH of 6.8 for 6 h, and 93.44 ± 1.94% at a pH of 7.4 for 24 h. It is remarkable that the encapsulation activityu of AZI-loaded ACLE-NCh is more effective due to the better interaction between NCh and AZI resulting from the increased hydrophobicity of modified NCh. Moreover, this work provides novel findings on the significant contribution of NCh modified by plant extracts, which has the potential as a carrier for azithromycin.

Biodegradation of polysaccharide-based biocomposites with acetylated cellulose nanocrystals, alginate and chitosan in aqueous environment

Biocomposite films from renewable sources are seen to be viable candidates as sustainable, zero-waste packaging materials. In this study, biocomposites films using chitosan and alginate as matrices, and pristine or acetylated cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as reinforcement agents, were fabricated, thoroughly characterized in terms of structure (with ATR-FTIR and XRD), morphology (SEM), thermal stability (TGA coupled with FTIR), water content and solubility and mechanical properties and subjected to controlled biological degradation in aqueous environment with added activated sludge. Biodegradation activity was followed through respirometry by measurement of change in partial O2 pressure using OxiTop® system. While the initial rate of biodegradation is higher in chitosan-based films with incorporated CNCs (both pristine and modified) compared to any other tested biocomposites, it was observed that chitosan-based films are not completely degradable in activated sludge medium, whereas alginate-based films reached complete biodegradation in 107 h to 112 h. Additional study of the aqueous medium with in situ FTIR during biodegradation offered an insight into biodegradation mechanisms. Use of advanced statistical methods indicated that selection of material (ALG vs CH) has the highest influence on biodegradability, followed by solubility of the material and its thermal stability.

Enhanced adsorption selectivity of Au(III) over Cu(II) from acidic chloride solutions by chitosan/palm kernel fatty acid distillate/magnetite nanocomposites

This work aimed to develop a modified chitosan adsorbent with enhanced adsorption selectivity for Au(III) over Cu(II) from acidic chloride solutions using low-cost and green raw materials. Various adsorbents, i.e., chitosan powder, chitosan microbeads, chitosan/palm kernel fatty acid distillate (PKFAD) microcomposites, magnetite nanoparticles, and chitosan/PKFAD/magnetite nanocomposites (CPMNs), were first evaluated for their ability to adsorb Au(III) and Cu(II) from single- and binary-metal solutions across different pH levels, followed by parametric analysis of Au(III) and Cu(II) adsorption from binary- and multi-metal solutions onto CPMNs, Au(III) desorption from Au(III)-loaded CPMNs, and reusability of CPMNs. Finally, Au(III)-loaded CPMNs were characterized with SEM-EDX, XRD, FTIR, and XPS to confirm the proposed adsorption mechanisms. Among all the adsorbents studied, CPMNs exhibited outstanding performance in adsorbing Au(III) from an equimolar binary Au(III)-Cu(II) solution, achieving the highest equilibrium adsorption capacity of 0.479 mmol/g (94.4 mg/g) without reaching saturation. Under optimal adsorption conditions of pH 3, 1 g/L CPMN dosage, and 90 min contact time, CPMNs adsorbed 96 % of Au(III) with a selectivity over Cu(II) exceeding 99 %. CPMNs demonstrated excellent reusability, maintaining over 80 % adsorption and desorption efficiencies for 5 cycles. The proposed adsorption mechanisms of CPMNs for Au(III) encompass electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, solvation, and reduction.

Biodegradable Chitosan-Based Films as an Alternative to Plastic Packaging

The impact of synthetic packaging on environmental pollution has been observed for years. One of the recent trends of green technology is the development of biomaterials made from food processing waste as an alternative to plastic packaging. Polymers obtained from some polysaccharides, such as chitosan, could be an excellent solution. This study investigated the biodegradability of chitosan-metal oxide films (ZnO, TiO2, Fe2O3) and chitosan-modified graphene films (CS-GO-Ag) in a soil environment. We have previously demonstrated that these films have excellent mechanical properties and exhibit antibacterial activity. This study aimed to examine these films' biodegradability and the possibility of their potential use in the packaging industry. The obtained results show that soil microorganisms were able to utilize chitosan films as the source of carbon and nitrogen, thus providing essential evidence about the biodegradability of CS, CS:Zn (20:1; 10:1), and CS:Fe2O3 (20:1) films. After 6 weeks of incubation, the complete degradation of the CS-Fe2O3 20:1 sample was noted, while after 8 weeks, CS-ZnO 20:1 and CS-ZnO 10:1 were degraded. This is a very positive result that points to the practical aspect of the biodegradability of such films in soil, where garbage is casually dumped and buried. Once selected, biodegradable films can be used as an alternative to plastic packaging, which contributes to the reduction in pollution in the environment.

Advancements in Chitosan-Based Nanoparticles for Pulmonary Drug Delivery

The evolution of respiratory diseases represents a considerable public health challenge, as they are among the leading causes of death worldwide. In this sense, in addition to the high prevalence of diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, cystic fibrosis, and lung cancer, emerging respiratory diseases, particularly those caused by members of the coronavirus family, have contributed to a significant number of deaths on a global scale over the last two decades. Therefore, several studies have been conducted to optimize the efficacy of treatments against these diseases, focusing on pulmonary drug delivery using nanomedicine. Thus, the development of nanocarriers has emerged as a promising alternative to overcome the limitations of conventional therapy, by increasing drug bioavailability at the target site and reducing unwanted side effects. In this context, nanoparticles composed of chitosan (CS) show advantages over other nanocarriers because chitosan possesses intrinsic biological properties, such as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and mucoadhesive capacity. Moreover, CS nanoparticles have the potential to enhance drug stability, prolong the duration of action, improve drug targeting, control drug release, optimize dissolution of poorly soluble drugs, and increase cell membrane permeability of hydrophobic drugs. These properties could optimize the performance of the drug after its pulmonary administration. Therefore, this review aims to discuss the potential of chitosan nanoparticles for pulmonary drug delivery, highlighting how their biological properties can improve the treatment of pulmonary diseases, including their synergistic action with the encapsulated drug.

Preparation of imidazole acids grafted chitosan with enhanced antioxidant, antibacterial and antitumor activities

Herein, imidazole acids grafted chitosan derivatives were synthesized, including HACC, HACC derivatives, TMC, TMC derivatives, amidated chitosan and amidated chitosan bearing imidazolium salts. The prepared chitosan derivatives were characterized by FT-IR and ¹H NMR. The tests evaluated the biological antioxidant, antibacterial, and cytotoxic activities of chitosan derivatives. The antioxidant capacity (DPPH radical, superoxide anion radical and hydroxyl radical) of chitosan derivatives was 2.4-8.3 times higher than that of chitosan. The antibacterial capacity against E. coli and S. aureus of cationic derivatives (HACC derivatives, TMC derivatives, and amidated chitosan bearing imidazolium salts) was more active than only imidazole-chitosan (amidated chitosan). In particular, the inhibition effect of HACC derivatives on E. coli was 15.625 μg/mL. Moreover, the series of chitosan derivatives bearing imidazole acids showed certain activity against MCF-7 and A549 cells. The present results suggest that the chitosan derivatives in this paper seem to be promising carrier materials for use in drug delivery systems.

Eco-friendly chitosan-based nanostructures in diabetes mellitus therapy: Promising bioplatforms with versatile therapeutic perspectives

Nature-derived polymers, or biopolymers, are among the most employed materials for the development of nanocarriers. Chitosan (CS) is derived from the acetylation of chitin, and this biopolymer displays features such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, low toxicity, and ease of modification. CS-based nano-scale delivery systems have been demonstrated to be promising carriers for drug and gene delivery, and they can provide site-specific delivery of cargo. Owing to the high biocompatibility of CS-based nanocarriers, they can be used in the future in clinical trials. On the other hand, diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that can develop due to a lack of insulin secretion or insulin sensitivity. Recently, CS-based nanocarriers have been extensively applied for DM therapy. Oral delivery of insulin is the most common use of CS nanoparticles in DM therapy, and they improve the pharmacological bioavailability of insulin. Moreover, CS-based nanostructures with mucoadhesive features can improve oral bioavailability of insulin. CS-based hydrogels have been developed for the sustained release of drugs and the treatment of DM complications such as wound healing. Furthermore, CS-based nanoparticles can mediate delivery of phytochemicals and other therapeutic agents in DM therapy, and they are promising compounds for the treatment of DM complications, including nephropathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular diseases, among others. The surface modification of nanostructures with CS can improve their properties in terms of drug delivery and release, biocompatibility, and others, causing high attention to these nanocarriers in DM therapy.

Recent advances of antibacterial starch-based materials

Starch has attracted a lot of attention because it is biodegradable, renewable, nontoxic and low cost. By adding antibacterial substances to starch, starch-based materials have antibacterial properties. The composite with other materials can improve the comprehensive performance of starch-based materials, thus broadening the application field of the material. In this paper, we focus on antibacterial starch-based materials and review their preparation and applications. It was found that antibacterial starch-based materials were most widely used in packaging, followed by medicine, and the research on smart starch-based materials was relatively less. This review may provide some reference value for subsequent studies of starch-based materials.

Masterbatch of Chitosan Nanowhiskers for Preparation of Nylon 6,10 Nanocomposite by Melt Blending

Composite materials have been extensively studied to optimize properties such as lightness and strength, which are the advantages of plastics. We prepared a highly concentrated (30 wt %) nylon/chitosan nanowhisker (CSW) masterbatch by blending nylon 6,10 and CSW by solvent casting to achieve high dispersion efficiency while considering an industrial setting. Subsequently, 0.3 wt % nylon/CSW nanocomposites were prepared with a large quantity of nylon 6,10 via melt blending. During preparation, the materials were stirred in the presence of formic acid at different times to investigate the effect of stirring time on the structure of the CSW and the physical properties of the composite. The formation of nanocomposites by the interactions between nylon and CSW was confirmed by observing the change in hydrogen bonding using FT-IR spectroscopy and the rise in melting temperature and melting enthalpy through differential scanning calorimetry. The results demonstrated increases in complex viscosity and shear thinning. The rheological properties of the composites changed due to interactions between CSW and nylon, as indicated by the loss factor. The mechanical properties produced by the nanocomposite stirred for 1.5 h were superior, suggesting that formic acid caused minimal structural damage, thus verifying the suitability of the stirring condition.

Chitosan Modified by Kombucha-Derived Bacterial Cellulose: Rheological Behavior and Properties of Convened Biopolymer Films

This work investigates the rheological behavior and characteristics of solutions and convened biopolymer films from Chitosan (Chi) modified by kombucha-derived bacterial cellulose (KBC). The Arrhenius equation and the Ostwald de Waele model (power-law) revealed that the Chi/KBC solutions exhibited non-Newtonian behavior. Both temperature and KBC concentration strongly affected their solution viscosity. With the selection of a proper solvent for chitosan solubilization, it may be possible to improve the performances of chitosan films for specific applications. The elasticity of the prepared films containing KBC 10% w/w was preferable when compared to the controls. FTIR analysis has confirmed the presence of bacterial cellulose, chitosan acetate, and chitosan lactate as the corresponding components in the produced biopolymer films. The thermal behaviors of the Chi (lactic acid)/KBC samples showed slightly higher stability than Chi (acetic acid)/KBC. Generally, these results will be helpful in the preparation processes of the solutions and biopolymer films of Chi dissolved in acetic or lactic acid modified by KBC powder to fabricate food packaging, scaffolds, and bioprinting inks, or products related to injection or direct extrusion through a needle.

Rational Design of Self-Emulsifying Pellet Formulation of Thymol: Technology Development Guided by Molecular-Level Structure Characterization and Ex Vivo Testing

The growing need for processing natural lipophilic and often volatile substances such as thymol, a promising candidate for topical treatment of intestinal mucosa, led us to the utilization of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR) spectroscopy for the rational design of enteric pellets with a thymol self-emulsifying system (SES). The SES (triacylglycerol, Labrasol®, and propylene glycol) provided a stable o/w emulsion with particle size between 1 and 7 µm. The ex vivo experiment confirmed the SES mucosal permeation and thymol delivery to enterocytes. Pellets W90 (MCC, Neusilin®US2, chitosan) were prepared using distilled water (90 g) by the M1−M3 extrusion/spheronisation methods varying in steps number and/or cumulative time. The pellets (705−740 µm) showed mostly comparable properties—zero friability, low intraparticular porosity (0−0.71%), and relatively high density (1.43−1.45%). They exhibited similar thymol release for 6 h (burst effect in 15th min ca. 60%), but its content increased (30−39.6 mg/g) with a shorter process time. The M3-W90 fluid-bed coated pellets (Eudragit®L) prevented undesirable thymol release in stomach conditions (<10% for 3 h). A detailed, ss-NMR investigation revealed structural differences across samples prepared by M1−M3 methods concerning system stability and internal interactions. The suggested formulation and methodology are promising for other lipophilic volatiles in treating intestinal diseases.

Progress in Starch-Based Materials for Food Packaging Applications

The food packaging sector generates large volumes of plastic waste due to the high demand for packaged products with a short shelf-life. Biopolymers such as starch-based materials are a promising alternative to non-renewable resins, offering a sustainable and environmentally friendly food packaging alternative for single-use products. This article provides a chronology of the development of starch-based materials for food packaging. Particular emphasis is placed on the challenges faced in processing these materials using conventional processing techniques for thermoplastics and other emerging techniques such as electrospinning and 3D printing. The improvement of the performance of starch-based materials by blending with other biopolymers, use of micro- and nano-sized reinforcements, and chemical modification of starch is discussed. Finally, an overview of recent developments of these materials in smart food packaging is given.

Chitosan films and scaffolds for regenerative medicine applications: A review

Over the last years, chitosan has demonstrated unparalleled characteristics for regenerative medicine applications. Beside excellent antimicrobial and wound healing properties, this polysaccharide biopolymer offers favorable characteristics such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and film and fiber-forming capabilities. Having plentiful active amine groups, chitosan can be also readily modified to provide auxiliary features for growing demands in regenerative medicine, which is constantly confronted with new problems, necessitating the creation of biocompatible, immunogenic and biodegradable film/scaffold composites. A new look at the chitosan composites structure/activity/application tradeoff is the primary focus of the current review, which can help researchers to detect the bottlenecks and overcome the shortcomings that arose from this intersection. In the current review, the most recent advances in chitosan films and scaffolds in terms of preparation techniques and modifying methods for improving their functional properties, in three major biomedical fields i.e., tissue engineering, wound healing, and drug delivery are surveyed and discussed.

New Active Packaging Based on Biopolymeric Mixture Added with Bacteriocin as Active Compound

The objective of this work was to develop a chitosan/agar-agar bioplastic film incorporated with bacteriocin that presents active potential when used as food packaging. The formulation of the film solution was determined from an experimental design, through the optimization using the desirability function. After establishing the concentrations of the biopolymers and the plasticizer, the purified bacteriocin extract of Lactobacillus sakei was added, which acts as an antibacterial agent. The films were characterized through physical, chemical, mechanical, barrier, and microbiological analyses. The mechanical properties and water vapor permeability were not altered by the addition of the extract. The swelling property decreased with the addition of the extract and the solubility increased, however, the film remained intact when in contact with the food, thus allowing an efficient barrier. Visible light protection was improved by increased opacity and antibacterial capacity was effective. When used as Minas Frescal cream cheese packaging, it contributed to the increase of microbiological stability, showing a reduction of 2.62 log UFC/g, contributing a gradual release of the active compound into the food during the storage time. The film had an active capacity that could be used as a barrier to the food, allowing it to be safely packaged.

Hemostatic Patches Based on Crosslinked Chitosan Films Applied in Interventional Procedures

In this study, we manufactured biocompatible hemostatic crosslinked chitosan (CS) patches and analyzed their physicochemical and biological properties for femoral arterial puncture applications. CS is a representative hemostatic material but has some drawbacks, such as swelling, shrinkage, and brittleness. Thus, it was crosslinked via a 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide (EDC)/N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS) coupling reaction and a nucleophilic addition reaction with citric acid (CA), glutaraldehyde (GTA), and genipin (GP) to remedy its shortcomings. The CSCA (crosslinked CS with CA/EDC), CSGTA (crosslinked CS with GTA), and CSG (crosslinked CS with GP) films showed low swelling degrees and good mechanical properties (excluding CSCA) compared with those of neat CS films. Additionally, every crosslinked CS film coated with thrombin (TB-CS) showed enhanced hemostatic ability in the whole blood clotting and activated partial thromboplastin time tests. Furthermore, the CSCA, CSGTA, and CSGP were nontoxic in an in vitro cell cytotoxicity test (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazolyl-2)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay) using L-929 mouse fibroblasts cells.

Naturally Occurring Polyelectrolytes and Their Use for the Development of Complex-Based Mucoadhesive Drug Delivery Systems: An Overview

Biopolymers have several advantages for the development of drug delivery systems, since they are biocompatible, biodegradable and easy to obtain from renewable resources. However, their most notable advantage may be their ability to adhere to biological tissues. Many of these biopolymers have ionized forms, known as polyelectrolytes. When combined, polyelectrolytes with opposite charges spontaneously form polyelectrolyte complexes or multilayers, which have great functional versatility. Although only one natural polycation-chitosan has been widely explored until now, it has been combined with many natural polyanions such as pectin, alginate and xanthan gum, among others. These polyelectrolyte complexes have been used to develop multiple mucoadhesive dosage forms such as hydrogels, tablets, microparticles, and films, which have demonstrated extraordinary potential to administer drugs by the ocular, nasal, buccal, oral, and vaginal routes, improving both local and systemic treatments. The advantages observed for these formulations include the increased bioavailability or residence time of the formulation in the administration zone, and the avoidance of invasive administration routes, leading to greater therapeutic compliance.

The role of microorganisms in biodegradation of chitosan/tannic acid materials

High utilization of thermoplastic polymers with low degradation rates as packaging materials generates a large amount of waste. Therefore, it should be replaced by natural polymers that can be degraded by microorganisms. In this paper, chitosan (CTS)/tannic acid (TA) materials in the weight ratios of 80CTS/20TA and 50CTS/50TA were prepared as potential packaging materials. The results showed that these materials were similarly degraded in soil and compost. However, in comparison to 50CTS/50TA, 80CTS/20TA was slightly better degraded in soil. After 14 days of biodegradation, the chemical structure of materials was changed resulting from adhesion of the microorganisms. The smallest changes were observed on 80CTS/20TA film. Bacterial species were collected and identified from materials after the degradation process. Microorganisms with the highest hydrolytic activity were chosen for the degradation study. Biodegradation and hydrolytic activity were observed only in a few strains, which indicate difficulties in material degradation. Soil bacteria degraded the films better than bacteria isolated from the compost. This study showed also that consortia of bacteria added to soil and compost had a positive effect on the biodegradation of the tested materials and increased the biodegradation of these materials in the studied environments.

Biodegradable Antimicrobial Films for Food Packaging: Effect of Antimicrobials on Degradation

The environmental problem generated by the massive consumption of plastics makes necessary the developing of biodegradable antimicrobial materials that can extend food shelf-life without having a negative impact on the environment. The current situation regarding the availability of biodegradable food packaging materials has been analysed, as well as different studies where antimicrobial compounds have been incorporated into the polymer matrix to control the growth of pathogenic or spoilage bacteria. Thus, the antimicrobial activity of active films based on different biodegradable polymers and antimicrobial compounds has been discussed. Likewise, relevant information on biodegradation studies carried out with different biopolymers in different environments (compost, soil, aquatic), and the effect of some antimicrobials on this behavior, are reviewed. In most of the studies, no relevant effect of the incorporated antimicrobials on the degradation of the polymer were observed, but some antimicrobials can delay the process. The changes in biodegradation pattern due to the presence of the antimicrobial are attributed to its influence on the microorganism population responsible for the process. More studies are required to know the specific influence of the antimicrobial compounds on the biodegradation behavior of polymers in different environments. No studies have been carried out or marine media to this end.

Influence of replacing oregano essential oil by ground oregano leaves on chitosan/alginate-based dressings properties

Biopolymers, as chitosan and alginate, have gained prominence in the biomedical area, mainly for application in wound dressings, as partial replacements for synthetic polymers. The present work aimed to compare the influence of the antimicrobial agent incorporation form on the properties of films prepared by casting. The chitosan/alginate-based films were manufactured containing oregano essential oil (OEO) or ground oregano leaves (OR). The OEO was chosen due to its excellent pharmacological properties, and the substitution by OR can represent an advantageous alternative for minimizing the final cost of the product, by removing the oil extraction step. The films, with different amounts of OEO and OR, were characterized in terms of their morphological, physicochemical, mechanical and antimicrobial properties. The films had properties according to desirable for wound dressing application: water vapor flux less than 35 g m^-2 h^-1, moderate liquid absorption capacity, and similar mechanical properties to human skin. All developed films showed antimicrobial activity against the bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Formulations containing OEO presented the largest inhibition zones, although OR showed high potential for the proposed use. These results suggest that films developed, with both OEO and ground oregano leaves, are promising for use as dressings.

Active coatings of thermoplastic starch and chitosan with alpha-tocopherol/bentonite for special green coffee beans

The quality of green coffee beans (GCBs) is possibly affected by storage conditions. Edible polymer coatings for GCBs can help preserve flavors and improve shelf life of GCBs. This study aimed to incorporate α-tocopherol, a powerful antioxidant, in thermoplastic starch [TPS] and chitosan [TPC] and determined the best cavitation energy (960-3840 J·mL-1) using an ultrasonic probe. Then, we evaluated the incorporation of bentonite (0% and 2% m/m) and α-tocopherol (0% and 10% m/m) in the best energy cavitation/biopolymer combination. The TPS and TPC coatings demonstrated good adherence to the GCBs, measured by surface energy. The dispersion of α-tocopherol in TPC, with cavitation energy 960 J·mL-1, promoted greater stability (greater zeta potential), thereby increasing antioxidant activity by 28% compared to TPS, therefore, was selected for a second stage. Incorporation of 2% bentonite into the TPC, with 10% α-tocopherol, resulted in a 3.7 × 10-10 g·m-1·s-1·Pa-1 water vapor permeability, which is satisfactory for prevented of moisture gain during storage. The compressive load showed values of 375 N to the non-coated GCB and around 475 N with the insertion of coatings to the GCB. Thus, a TPC/α-tocopherol/bentonite combination, dispersed with 960 J·mL-1 energy, was highly effective in the development of biopolymeric coatings for the GCBs.

Characterization of Chitosan Films Incorporated with Different Substances of Konjac Glucomannan, Cassava Starch, Maltodextrin and Gelatin, and Application in Mongolian Cheese Packaging

Four kinds of edible composite films based on chitosan combined with additional substances (konjac glucomannan, cassava starch, maltodextrin and gelatin) and the addition of lysozyme were prepared and used as packaging materials for Mongolian cheese. The prepared composite films were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The physicochemical properties of all chitosan composite films, including thickness, viscosity, opacity, color, moisture content, water vapor permeability, tensile strength and elongation at break, were measured. The results show that Konjac glucomannan–chitosan composite film presented the strongest mechanical property and highest transparency. The cassava starch–chitosan composite film presented the highest water barrier property. The study on the storage characteristics of Mongolian cheese was evaluated at 4 °C. The results show that the cheese packaging by cassava starch–chitosan composite film presented better treatment performance in maintaining the quality, reducing weight loss and delayering microbial growth.

Quaternary Ammonium Chitosans: The Importance of the Positive Fixed Charge of the Drug Delivery Systems

As a natural polysaccharide, chitosan has good biocompatibility, biodegradability and biosecurity. The hydroxyl and amino groups present in its structure make it an extremely versatile and chemically modifiable material. In recent years, various synthetic strategies have been used to modify chitosan, mainly to solve the problem of its insolubility in neutral physiological fluids. Thus, derivatives with negative or positive fixed charge were synthesized and used to prepare innovative drug delivery systems. Positively charged conjugates showed improved properties compared to unmodified chitosan. In this review the main quaternary ammonium derivatives of chitosan will be considered, their preparation and their applications will be described to evaluate the impact of the positive fixed charge on the improvement of the properties of the drug delivery systems based on these polymers. Furthermore, the performances of the proposed systems resulting from in vitro and ex vivo experiments will be taken into consideration, with particular attention to cytotoxicity of systems, and their ability to promote drug absorption.

Chitosan Derivatives and Their Application in Biomedicine

Chitosan is a product of the deacetylation of chitin, which is widely found in nature. Chitosan is insoluble in water and most organic solvents, which seriously limits both its application scope and applicable fields. However, chitosan contains active functional groups that are liable to chemical reactions; thus, chitosan derivatives can be obtained through the chemical modification of chitosan. The modification of chitosan has been an important aspect of chitosan research, showing a better solubility, pH-sensitive targeting, an increased number of delivery systems, etc. This review summarizes the modification of chitosan by acylation, carboxylation, alkylation, and quaternization in order to improve the water solubility, pH sensitivity, and the targeting of chitosan derivatives. The applications of chitosan derivatives in the antibacterial, sustained slowly release, targeting, and delivery system fields are also described. Chitosan derivatives will have a large impact and show potential in biomedicine for the development of drugs in future.
