Abstract
The rapid and effective fabrication of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels with good mechanical properties is of great significance yet remains a huge challenge. The preparation of PVA hydrogels via the conventional cyclic freeze-thaw method is intricate and time-intensive. In this study, a pioneering approach involving the utilization of low-temperature continuous freezing is introduced to produce a novel PVA-ethylene glycol (EG) gel. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirm that with the assistance of EG, PVA molecular chains can self-assemble to generate an abundance of microcrystalline domains at low temperatures, thus improving the mechanical properties of PVA-EG gel. Remarkably, when the mass ratio of H2O/EG is 4:6, the gel's maximum tensile strength can reach 2.5 MPa, which is much higher than that of PVA gels prepared via the freeze-thaw method. The preparation process of PVA-EG gel is simple, and its properties are excellent, which will promote the wide application of PVA tough gel in many fields.

Abstract
Macromolecules obtained from renewable natural sources are gaining increasing attention as components for a vast variety of sustainable polymer-based materials. Natural raw materials can facilitate continuous-flow production due to their year-round availability and short replenishment period. They also open new opportunities for chemists and biologists to design and create "bioreplacement" and "bioadvantaged" polymers, where complex structures produced by nature are being modified, upgraded, and utilized to create novel materials. Bio-based macromonomers are expected not only to compete with but to replace some petroleum-based analogs, as well. The development of novel sustainable materials is an ongoing and very dynamic process. There are multiple strategies for transforming natural macromolecules into sophisticated value-added products. Some methods include chemical modification of macromolecules, while others include blending several components into one new system. One of the most promising approaches for incorporating renewable macromolecules into new products is the synthesis of hybrid networks based on one or more natural components. Each one has unique characteristics, so its incorporation into a network brings new sustainable materials with properties that can be tuned according to their end-use. This article reviews the current state-of-the-art and future potential of renewable natural macromolecules as sustainable building blocks for the synthesis and use of hybrid polymer networks. The most recent advancements and applications that involve polymers, such as cellulose, chitin, alginic acid, gellan gum, lignin, and their derivatives, are discussed.

Abstract
Hydrogels is a hydrophilic, cross-linked polymer of three-dimensional network structures. The application of hydrogels prepared from a single polymer in the biomedical field has many drawbacks. The functional blend of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan allows hydrogels to have better and more desirable properties than those produced from a single polymer, which is a good biomaterial for development and design. In this paper, we have reviewed the progress in the application of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan composite hydrogels in various medical fields, the different cross-linking agents and cross-linking methods, and the research progress in the optimization of composite hydrogels for their subsequent wide range of biomedical applications.

Abstract
In order to develop better wound dressings, a novel chitosan hydrogel (Cn-Nm gel) was designed and fabricated by using aldehyde-4-arm polyethylene glycol (4r-PEG-CHO) to crosslink the chitosan dissolved in alkaline solution, amino-4-arm polyethylene glycol (4r-PEG-NH2) was chosen as the additive simultaneously. The special dissolution technique and macromolecular crosslinking structure endows the Cn-Nm gels with better performance than that of gels prepared by acid dissolving method with micromolecule crosslinker. First, Cn-Nm gels own strong toughness with 500 kPa tensile strength and 1000% elongation, about 400% swelling ratio and fast water absorption rate. Second, about 300 kPa adhesive strength and strippability between the gels and skin is achieved. More importantly, Cn-Nm gels show nearly 100% antibacterial rate towards Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Excellent biocompatibility is also proved by the mouse fibroblasts tests. All of the performance makes this developed chitosan-based gel be the potential candidate as a wound dressing.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop a new polysaccharide-based hydrogel. The Box-Behnken design was used to optimize the optimal synthesis conditions of the hydrogel, with the swelling parameters as indicators. The findings of rheologic tests confirm that free radical polymerization and the introduction of linear polymers improved the mechanical strength of the hydrogel. Combined with the characterization results, the gel mechanism of BSP-g-PAA/PVA DN hydrogel was proposed. The intermolecular association and entanglement increase, which effectively dissipates energy, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. In vitro blood compatibility experiments show that DN hydrogel has a low hemolysis rate and a good coagulation effect. The material is non-cytotoxic to L929 cells. The hepatic haemorrhage and mouse-tail amputation models of rats and mice were used to further evaluate the in vivo wound sealing and hemostatic properties of the hydrogel. The blood loss and hemostatic time were significantly lower than those of the control group, indicating that the hydrogel has excellent hemostatic effects. Therefore, the obtained BSP-g-PAA/PVA DN network hydrogel has good comprehensive properties and is expected to be used as a hemostatic material or a precursor of a drug carrier and a tissue engineering scaffold.

Abstract
Wounds management takes a high interest in the medical field and the addition of antimicrobial agents in an assortment of wound dressings leads to delay the wound healing. This study aimed at preparing natural combination between excretion/secretion (ES) and water-soluble chitosan nanoparticles (from Lucilia cuprina maggots) and investigating its antibacterial and wound healing activities. ES of maggots was collected, and the water-soluble chitosan nanoparticles (WSCNPs) were prepared and characterized. Antibacterial activities of combinations were evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Proteus vulgaris. ES-WSC-2 combination that contains 50% ES and 1% WSCNPs showed highest antibacterial activity against all tested bacteria compared to the other combinations. In vitro, the ES-WSC-2 combination was used to study the wound healing activity by scratch assay. The synergism between ES and WSCNPs (in ES-WSC-2 combination) accelerated the wound healing rate which suggests the use of this combination as an effective natural antibacterial and wound healing agent.

Abstract
A novel pH-sensitive semi-interpenetrating polymer network (semi-IPN) hydrogel was prepared by using konjac glucomannan (KGM) and poly (γ-glutamic acid) (γ-PGA) with sodium trimetaphosphate (STMP) as the crosslinking agent. The structure of the semi-IPN hydrogels was characterized by FTIR spectra, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), rheological measurements, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pH-sensitive effects were investigated by calculating the equilibrium swelling ratio (ESR) in buffer solutions (pH 2, 4, 6, and 8, respectively) at 37 °C. These results showed that the content of cross-linker and γ-PGA has a significant influence on the hydrogels' structure and swelling behavior. In vitro drug release behavior of semi-IPN hydrogels was investigated under simulated gastric and intestinal fluids using model drug Nicotinamide (NTM), and various models were applied to describe the drug release behaviors. The obtained results indicated that our synthesized semi-IPN hydrogel had the potential to be used as a suitable biomaterial carrier for functional components or drug delivery in the intestine.

Abstract
Stimuli-responsive chitosan (CS) hydrogels exhibit great potential for drug delivery and tissue engineering; however, the structure of these stimuli-responsive CS hydrogels, such as dual pH- and thermo-responsive hydrogels, is difficult to control or needs additional crosslinking agents. Here, a new dual pH- and thermo-responsive hydrogel system is developed by combining pH-responsive C6 -OH allyl-modified CS (OAL-CS) with thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM). The thiol groups in PNIPAM and the allyl groups in OAL-CS can rapidly form crosslinking hydrogel network by "thiol-ene" click chemistry under UV irradiation. As expected, the swelling ratio of the OAL-CS/PNIPAM hydrogel can be controlled by changing pH and temperature. Moreover, the hydrogel displays non-cytotoxic nature toward human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells, and the histological analyses reveal the subcutaneous tissue with no signs of inflammation after 5 days of injection in vivo. The results indicate that the new OAL-CS/PNIPAM hydrogel has potential to serve as a smart injectable platform for application in drug delivery and tissue engineering.
