Abstract
Purified flavonoids (PF) from Moringa oleifera leaves were incorporated in chitosan (CS) polymer at different concentrations (0.5-4%) to produce a novel edible film. The physical, structure, mechanical, and bio-functional characterizations of the film were evaluated. The incorporation of PF significantly (p < 0.05) improved the thickness, solubility, swelling, and color of CS-films. Incorporating 4% of Moringa oleifera purified flavonoids (MOPF) improved the water vapor permeability from 8.85 to 2.47 g-1 s-1 Pa-1, and increased the film surface heterogeneity observed by SEM. Results also indicated that PF enhanced the mechanical properties and thermal stability of CS-films. The FTIR results indicated alterations in the CS-MOPF composite films' characteristics. Additionally, the incorporation of MOPF increased the antioxidation capacity. Furthermore, 4% of MOPF inhibited the activity of pathogenic bacteria in packed beef burgers. These results suggest that CS-MOPF composite films with enhanced technological and bio-functional properties could be industrially applied to increase the shelf-life of packaged foods.

Abstract
In this study, a series of novel nanofibers based on gelatin (GA) loading with purple potato anthocyanin (PPA) and syringic acid (SA) were obtained by electrospinning technology. The effects of SA on mechanical properties, thermal stability, antioxidant capacity, and antimicrobial activity of the GA/PPA nanofibers were systematically characterized. The scanning electron microscopy observation results revealed a smooth surface on the nanofibers. The incorporation of SA enhanced the viscosity of the electrospun solutions, and it increased the average diameter of nanofibers from 0.17 μm to 0.28 μm. The tensile strength and thermal stability of the obtained nanofibers were enhanced with the addition of a suitable level of SA (1.5%, w/v), which strengthened the intermolecular interaction. The GA/PPA/SA nanofibers presented over 80% antioxidant capacity and strong antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Meanwhile, the sensitivity responses of nanofibers to NH3 revealed that GA/PPA/SA II nanofibers (1.5% w/v SA) presented good sensitivity of colorimetric behavior to ammonia. A pork spoilage test was performed to evaluate practical application of the nanofibers, and an obvious color change (dark purple to green) was observed. These results indicated GA/PPA/SA II nanofibers can be utilized as an active and intelligent multipurpose packaging material to preserve and track the freshness of pork.

Abstract
Biopolymer-clay composite films were synthesized and characterized for food packaging material. The synthesis was conducted in two stages. Cetrimonium bromide-modified bentonite (CTAB-bentonite) was first exchanged with Ag ions to obtain Ag-CTAB-bentonite. Biopolymer-clay composite films were then performed by a solution-casting method between chitosan (biopolymer) and Ag-CTAB-bentonite or between chitosan and CTAB-bentonite. Different weights of CTAB-bentonite (3% and 5% wt.) and Ag-CTAB-bentonite (3% and 5% wt.) were used during the second stage. The resultant films were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopes, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, optical measurement, and others (moisture content, swelling behavior, water solubility, antibacterial, shredded carrot preservation, and biodegradability). Results indicated that the properties (thermal stability, thermomechanical ability, UV-visible light barrier, shredded carrot preservation) of the chitosan-based film incorporated with the synthesized composites were enhanced compared to those of the CS film. The CS/(CTAB-bentonite)-3% and CS/(Ag-CTAB-bentonite)-3% films exhibited antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica subp. enterica, Staphylococcus aureus, and Listeria monocytogenes. The chitosan-based film reinforced with the two prepared composites can be potential for food preservation and packaging.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that polymethoxylated flavonoids-loaded citral emulsion (PCT) can inhibit the growth and reproduction of Penicillium in citrus; however, PCT is difficult to apply to fruit preservation due to its high fluidity and volatility. Therefore, in this study, we combined PCT with chitosan (CS) to investigate the effect of a composite coating on citrus preservation. The results showed that compared to the control group, the CS-PCT group could effectively reduce the decay rate and maintain moisture availability, color difference, and hardness. Moreover, the contents of nonenzymatic antioxidants and volatile substances with antimicrobial activity were better preserved. In addition, the activities of related antioxidant enzymes were greater in the treatment group, and the expression of the corresponding enzyme-encoding genes was upregulated. Consequently, CS-PCT treatment could effectively maintain fruit quality and improve the resistance of citrus fruits during storage; moreover, it can be considered a nontoxic and efficient citrus preservative.

Abstract
Food packaging must guarantee the products' quality during the different operations including packing and maintenance throughout transportation and storage until to consumption. Thus, it should satisfy, both, food freshness and quality preservation and consumers health safety. Natural bio-sourced polymers have been explored as safe edible materials for several packaging applications, being interestingly carrier of bioactive substances, once added to improve films' properties. Gelatin and chitosan are among the most studied biomaterials for the preparation of edible packaging films due to their excellent characteristics including biodegradability, compatibility and film-forming property. These polymers could be used alone or in combination with other polymers to produce composite films with the desired physicochemical and mechanical properties. When incorporated with bioactive substances (natural extracts, polyphenolic compounds, essential oils), chitosan/gelatin-based films acquired various biological properties, including antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. The emerging bioactive composite films with excellent physical attributes represent excellent packaging alternative to preserve different types of foodstuffs (fruits, meat, fish, dairy products, …) and have shown great achievements. This chapter provides the main techniques used to prepare gelatin- and chitosan- based films, showing some examples of bioactive compounds incorporated into the films' matrix. Also, it illustrates the outstanding advantages given by these biomaterials for food preservation, when used as coating and wrapping agents.

Abstract
The development of novel eco-friendly materials like chitosan for food storage and preservation has become crucial in eliminating plastic packaging and minimizing waste. In this work, cinnamaldehyde has been encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles and subsequently incorporated into a 2 % chitosan film. The obtained nanoparticles achieved an average radius size of 89.80 nm, PDI of 0.40, and spherical morphology determined by SEM. Cinnamaldehyde was encapsulated in chitosan nanoparticles achieving values of encapsulation close to 7 %, showing a biphasic release profile with sustained release during 5 days. Films with an average thickness of 0.124 mm and elongation at break of 63.66 % to 76.50 % were obtained. Finally, the antimicrobial properties of the films was tested showing reduction values in total aerobic value of 4.85 log cfu/g, total coliform of 1.26 log cfu/g and grow potential value of < 0.5 log10 for Listeria monocitogenes over 20 days.

Abstract
In this study, chitosan (CS) was conjugated with epicatechin gallate (ECG) to prepare CS-ECG conjugates with different substitution degrees (5.18 %, 6.36 % and 7.74 %). Then, antioxidant packaging films were fabricated by blending CS and CS-ECG conjugates. The impact of CS-ECG conjugates' substitution degree on the functionality of CS/CS-ECG films was determined. CS-ECG conjugates showed UV absorption at 275 nm, proton signal at 6.85 ppm and infrared absorption at 1533 cm-1, assigning to the conjugated ECG. As compared with CS, CS-ECG conjugates exhibited less crystalline state but higher antioxidant activity. The structural characterization of CS/CS-ECG films showed CS and CS-ECG conjugates formed hydrogen bonds. CS/CS-ECG films displayed 26.35 %-29.23 % water solubility, 85.61°-86.96° water contact angle, 3.11-3.41 × 10-11 g m-1 s-1 Pa-1 water vapor permeability, 0.29-0.34 cm3 mm m-2 day-1 atm-1 oxygen permeability, 31.54-36.20 MPa tensile strength, 50.12 %-56.40 % elongation at break, as well as potent antioxidant activity and oil oxidation inhibitory ability. Notably, the film containing CS-ECG conjugate with 7.74 % substitution degree had the strongest barrier ability, mechanical property, antioxidant activity and oil oxidation inhibitory ability. Results suggested the substitution degree of CS-ECG conjugates was positively correlated with the barrier, mechanical and antioxidant properties of CS/CS-ECG films.

Abstract
Development of new food packaging materials is crucial to reduce the use of single-use plastics and to limit their destructive impact on the environment. Polysaccharides provide an alternative solution to this problem. This paper summarizes and discusses recent research results on the potential of modifying polysaccharides as materials for film and coating applications. Modifications of polysaccharides significantly affect their properties, as well as their application usability. Although modifications of biopolymers for packaging applications have been widely studied, polysaccharides have attracted little attention despite being a prospective, environmentally friendly, and economically viable packaging alternative. Therefore, this paper discusses approaches to the development of biodegradable, polysaccharide-based food packaging materials and focuses on modifications of four polysaccharides, such as starch, chitosan, sodium alginate and cellulose. In addition, these modifications are presented not only in terms of the selected polysaccharide, but also in terms of specific properties, i.e. hydrophilic, barrier and mechanical properties, of polysaccharides. Such a presentation of results makes it much easier to select the modification method to improve the unsatisfactory properties of the material. Moreover, very often it happens that the applied modification improves one and worsens another property, which is also presented in this review.

Abstract
As one of the most abundant natural polysaccharides that possess good biological activity, chitosan is extracted from chitin. Its application in the food field is being increasingly valued. However, chitosan extraction is difficult, and its poor solubility limits its application. At present, the extraction methods include the acid-base method, new chemical methods, and biological methods. The extraction rates of chitin/chitosan are 4-55%, 13-14%, and 15-28%, respectively. Different chemical modifications have different effects on chitosan, making it applicable in different fields. This article reviews and compares the extraction and chemical modification methods of chitosan, emphasizing the importance of green extraction methods. Finally, the application prospects of chitosan in the food industry are discussed. This will promote the understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of different extraction methods for chitosan as well as the relationship between modification and application, providing valuable insights for the future development of chitosan.

Abstract
Considering the growing threats to the environment and human health, such as plastic pollution and food spoilage, the development of naturally antibacterial food packaging materials with biodegradable capabilities has recently attracted considerable attention. This work applies the concept of green environmental protection to packaging technology, and a new type of green edible antibacterial packaging film was developed. The basic idea is to incorporate furoic acid (FA), which possesses excellent antibacterial activity, into the flaxseed gum and konjac glucomannan matrix (FK) as a filler to obtain a series of FK-FA bioactive films. This incorporation simultaneously improves the hydrophobicity and UV-barrier ability by 12.28 % and 42.87 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the diameters of the antibacterial zone of the FK-FA0.4% films (composite FK films containing 0.4 % FA) against E. coli and S. aureus increased to 38.98 mm and 36.29 mm from 24.00 mm of pure FK film, respectively. As a consequence, the grape sample sealed with FK-FA0.4% film remained edible on the 18th day of storage, while those packaged with commercial PE film and pure FK were seriously rotted and lost edible value on the 12th day, further confirming the enhanced preservation capacity. Finally, the as-prepared films were established to be biodegradable and were almost completely degraded within 25 days under simulated environmental conditions. Overall, these promising results show the potential of FK-FA films for replacing plastic packaging materials as eco-friendly edible films with prolonged shelf life for active packaging.

Abstract
Polyphenols and polysaccharides are very important natural products with special physicochemical properties and extensive biological activities. Recently, polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates have been synthesized to overcome the limitations of polysaccharides and broaden their application range. Grafted copolymers are produced through chemical coupling, enzyme-mediated, and free radical-mediated methods, among which the free radical-induced grafting reaction is the most cost-effective, ecofriendly, safe, and plausible approach. Here, we review the grafting reactions of polysaccharides mediated by free radicals with various bioactive polyphenols, such as gallic acid (GA), ferulic acid (FA), and catechins. A detailed introduction of the methods and their mechanisms for free radical-mediated grafting is given. Structural characterization methods of the graft products, including thin-layer chromatography (TLC), ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) are introduced. Furthermore, the biological properties of polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates are also presented, including antioxidant, antibacterial, antidiabetic, and neuroprotection activities, etc. Moreover, the potential applications of polyphenol-polysaccharide conjugates are described. Finally, the challenges and research prospects of graft products are summarized.

Abstract
In this study, the composite cling film was prepared by solution casting method using chitosan and golden mushroom foot polysaccharide as substrates, and the structure and physicochemical indexes of the composite cling film were characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that compared with single chitosan film, the composite cling film has better mechanical properties and antioxidant properties, and the barrier of UV light and water vapor is also stronger. Due to its high nutritional value, blueberry has a short shelf life due to its thin skin and poor storage resistance. Therefore, in this study, blueberry was used as the object of freshness preservation, and the single chitosan film group and the uncovered group were used as controls, and the weight loss, total bacterial colony, decay rate, respiration intensity, malondialdehyde content, hardness, soluble solids, titratable acid, anthocyanin content, and VC content of blueberry were used as freshness preservation indexes for experiments. The comprehensive results showed that the freshness preservation effect of the composite film group was significantly higher than that of the control group, with better antibacterial properties, antioxidant properties, etc., which could effectively delay fruit decay and deterioration, thus prolonging the shelf life, and thus the chitosan/Enoki mushroom foot polysaccharide composite preservation film has a high potential as a new freshness preservation material for blueberry.

Abstract
Introduction: Biopolymers, such as pullulan, a natural exopolysaccharide from Aureobasidium pullulans, and their nanocomposites are commonly used in the food, pharmaceutical, and medical industries due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Methods: Pullulan was synthesized by the A. pullulans ATCC 201253 strain. Nanocomposite films based on biosynthesized pullulan were prepared and loaded with different concentrations of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) synthesized by the Fusarium culmorum strain JTW1. AgNPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Zeta potential measurements, and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. In turn, the produced films were subjected to physico-chemical analyses such as goniometry, UV shielding capacity, attenuated total reflection-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and their mechanical and degradation properties were assessed. The antibacterial assays of the nanoparticles and the nanocomposite films against both food-borne and reference pathogens, including Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella infantis, Salmonella enterica, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, were performed using standard methods. Results: AgNPs were small (mean 15.1 nm), spherical, and displayed good stability, being coated with protein biomolecules. When used in higher concentrations as an additive to pullulan films, they resulted in reduced hydrophilicity and light transmission for both UV-B and UV-A lights. Moreover, the produced films exhibited a smooth surface. Therefore, it can be concluded that the addition of biogenic AgNPs did not change the morphology and texture of the films compared to the control film. The nanoparticles and nanocomposite films demonstrated remarkable antibacterial activity against both food-borne and reference bacteria. The highest activity of the prepared films was observed against L. monocytogenes. Discussion: The obtained results suggest that the novel nanocomposite films prepared from biosynthesized pullulan and AgNPs can be considered for use in the development of medical products and food packaging. Moreover, this is the first report on pullulan-based nanocomposites with mycogenic AgNPs for such applications.

Abstract
Chitin, which may be the second-most common polymer after cellulose, is the raw material of chitosan. Chitosan has been infused with various plant extracts and subsidiary polymers to improve its biological and physiological properties. Chitosan's physicochemical properties are enhanced by blending, making them potential candidates that can be utilized in multifunctional areas, including food processing, nutraceuticals, food quality monitoring, food packaging, and storage. Chitosan-based biomaterials are biocompatible, biodegradable, low toxic, mucoadhesive, and regulate chemical release. Therefore, they are used in the biomedical field. The present manuscript highlights the application of chitosan-based composites in the food and biomedical industries.

Abstract
The presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria in our environment is a matter of growing concern. Consumption of contaminated drinking water or contaminated fruit or vegetables can provoke ailments and even diseases, mainly in the digestive system. In this work, we present the latest data on the ability to remove bacteria from potable water and wastewater. The article discusses the mechanisms of the antibacterial activity of polymers, consisting of the electrostatic interaction between bacterial cells and the surface of natural and synthetic polymers functionalized with metal cations (polydopamine modified with silver nanoparticles, starch modified with quaternary ammonium or halogenated benzene). The synergistic effect of polymers (N-alkylaminated chitosan, silver doped polyoxometalate, modified poly(aspartic acid)) with antibiotics has also been described, allowing for precise targeting of drugs to infected cells as a preventive measure against the excessive spread of antibiotics, leading to drug resistance among bacteria. Cationic polymers, polymers obtained from essential oils (EOs), or natural polymers modified with organic acids are promising materials in the removal of harmful bacteria. Antimicrobial polymers are successfully used as biocides due to their acceptable toxicity, low production costs, chemical stability, and high adsorption capacity thanks to multi-point attachment to microorganisms. New achievements in the field of polymer surface modification in order to impart antimicrobial properties were summarized.

Abstract
A recent focus on the development of biobased polymer packaging films has come about in response to the environmental hazards caused by petroleum-based, nonbiodegradable packaging materials. Among biopolymers, chitosan is one of the most popular due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability, antibacterial properties, and ease of use. Due to its ability to inhibit gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, yeast, and foodborne filamentous fungi, chitosan is a suitable biopolymer for developing food packaging. However, more than the chitosan is required for active packaging. In this review, we summarize chitosan composites which show active packaging and improves food storage condition and extends its shelf life. Active compounds such as essential oils and phenolic compounds with chitosan are reviewed. Moreover, composites with polysaccharides and various nanoparticles are also summarized. This review provides valuable information for selecting a composite that enhances shelf life and other functional qualities when embedding chitosan. Furthermore, this report will provide directions for the development of novel biodegradable food packaging materials.

Abstract
Natural medicines are promising platforms for competent topical treatment modalities benefiting the cosmetic implementation and proffering solutions to the current remedies. Therefore, the objective of this study was to formulate syringic acid (SA), well-known for its multilateral anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antioxidant potentials, in newly developed linoleic acid (LA) transferosomes as an anti-acne nano-form remedy. Herein, LA was incorporated in transferosomes owing to its antimicrobial effect and dermal penetrability. Comprehensive appraisal through physicochemical, antioxidant and dermal deposition investigations was conducted. Clinical assessment was also performed in acne patients and compared with the marketed product (Adapalene® gel). The relevant investigations of the optimum formula indicated stable vesicles with a small-sized diameter (147.46 nm), surface charge (-26.86 mV), spherical architecture, reasonable entrapment (76.63%), considerable antioxidant activity (IC50 = 11.1 µg/mL) and remarkable skin deposition (78.72%).More importantly, LA based transferosomes enclosing SA exhibited inflammation lessening in acne sufferers as manifested by greater reduction in the total count of the acne lesions reaching 79.5% in contrast to Adapalene® gel with only 18.7% reduction in acne lesions. Interestingly, no irritation and erythema were reported for the proposed transferosomes. Inclusively, the cosmetic formulation practice could reap benefits of the development of such vesicles.

Abstract
Chitosan (CS) films were developed incorporating peptide HX-12C. The films were studied to determine their microstructures, physical properties, release properties of peptide HX-12C and functional properties. The results indicated that there may be hydrogen bonding interactions between CS and peptide HX-12C, thereby creating a homogeneous internal microstructure and lower crystallinity (10.8-12.8 %). Compared with CS film, CS-HX-12C films displayed lower light transmission, MC (20.8-19.9 %), WVP (8.82-8.59 × 10-11·g·m-1·s-1·Pa-1), OTR (0.015-0.037 cc/(m2.day)) and higher WS (15.7-32.4 %) values. Moreover, controlled-release experiments showed that pH, ionic strength and temperature could all significantly affect the release of peptide HX-12C from the films. Finally, the increase of pH value and TVC and lipid oxidation of fresh pork were delayed due to the treatment with CS-2%HX-12C film. However, incorporating peptide HX-12C into CS films did not improve the mechanical properties of the films and their effects against protein oxidation. Our results suggest that the CS-based antimicrobial packaging films integrated with peptide HX-12C exhibit the potential for fresh pork preservation.

Abstract
This work investigated the effects of different concentrations (0.10 %, 0.15 % or 0.20 %, w/v) of gellan gum (GG) with/without 0.50 % (v/v) basil essential oil (BEO) on physicochemical properties of gellan gum-rice bran oil (GG-RBO) emulsions. The results showed that GG-RBO emulsions with 0.15 % or 0.20 % GG were more stable than GG-RBO emulsion with 0.10 % GG (as evidenced by higher apparent viscosity and absolute zeta potential, but smaller average particle size and lower turbidity), thus displaying better coating performances (as evidenced by bigger contact angle but lower moisture content). The presence of BEO further improved their stability and coating performances. Coating with GG-BRO or GG-RBO-BEO emulsion with 0.15 % GG significantly delayed the increase in weight loss, and the decrease in haugh unit, yolk index and albumen pH of eggs during 42 days storage; moreover, GG-RBO-BEO emulsion caused lower total aerobic plate count. Therefore, GG-RBO, especially GG-RBO-BEO emulsion has potential in egg preservation.

Abstract
Recently, the development of materials based on natural polymers have been observed. This is the result of increasing environmental degradation, as well as increased awareness and consumer expectations. Many industries, especially the packaging industry, face challenges resulting from legal regulations. Chitin is the most common biopolymer right after cellulose and is used to produce chitosan. Due to the properties of chitosan, such as non-toxicity, biocompatibility, as well as antimicrobial properties, chitosan-based materials are used in many industries. Many studies have been conducted to determine the suitability of chitosan materials as food packaging, and their advantages and limitations have been identified. Thanks to the possibility of modifying the chitosan matrix by using natural additives, it is possible to strengthen the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of chitosan films, which means that, in the near future, chitosan-based materials will be a more environmentally friendly alternative to the plastic packaging used so far. The article presents literature data on the most commonly used natural additives, such as essential oils, plant extracts, or polysaccharides, and their effects on antimicrobial, antioxidant, mechanical, barrier, and optical properties. The application of chitosan as a natural biopolymer in food packaging extends the shelf-life of various food products while simultaneously reducing the use of synthetic plastics, which in turn will have a positive impact on the natural environment. However, further research on chitosan and its combinations with various materials is still needed to extent the application of chitosan in food packaging and bring its application to industrial levels.

Abstract
Meat by-products such as bones, skin, horns, hooves, feet, skull, etc., are produced from slaughtered mammals. Innovative solutions are very important to achieving sustainability and obtaining the added value of meat by-products with the least impact on the environment. Gelatin, which is obtained from products high in collagen, such as dried skin and bones, is used in food processing, and pharmaceuticals. Chitosan is derived from chitin and is well recognized as an edible polymer. It is a natural product that is non-toxic and environmentally friendly. Recently, chitosan has attracted researchers' interests due to its biological activities, including antimicrobial, antitumor, and antioxidant properties. In this review, article, we highlighted the recent available information on the application of gelatin and chitosan as antioxidants, antimicrobials, food edible coating, enzyme immobilization, biologically active compound encapsulation, water treatment, and cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
Developing biodegradable active films has been a promising green approach to overcoming global concerns over the environmental pollution and human health caused by plastic utilization. This study aimed to develop active films based on chitosan (CS), produced from waste crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) shells enriched with bioactive extract (5-20%) of propolis (PS) and to characterize its properties, envisaging food packaging applications. The chromatographic profile of PS extract confirmed its richness, with 41 phenolic compounds. With increasing extract addition to the chitosan, the thickness of the films increased from 61.7 to 71.7 μm, causing a reduction in the light transmission rate, along with a greenish colour shift. The interactions between PS extract and CS was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy, at the same time that the microstructural integrity of the films was checked on the scanning electron microscopy micrographs. The findings also showed that addition of PS enhanced the films thermal stability and mechanical properties e.g., tensile modulus, yield strength, and stress at break. Besides, it improved the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Overall, CS-based composite films seem a promising green alternative to petroleum-based synthetic plastics allowing to extend the shelf life of food products due to their eco-friendly nature.

Abstract
New developments require innovative ecofriendly materials defined by their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and versatility. For that reason, the scientific society is focused on biopolymers such as chitosan, which is the second most abundant in the world after cellulose. These new materials should show good properties in terms of sustainability, circularity, and energy consumption during industrial applications. The idea is to replace traditional raw materials with new ecofriendly materials which contribute to keeping a high production rate but also reducing its environmental impact and the costs. The chitosan shows interesting and unique properties, thus it can be used for different purposes which contributes to the design and development of sustainable novel materials. This helps in promoting sustainability through the use of chitosan and diverse materials based on it. For example, it is a good sustainable alternative for food packaging or it can be used for sustainable agriculture. The chitosan can also reduce the pollution of other industrial processes such as paper production. This mini review collects some of the most important advances for the sustainable use of chitosan for promoting circular economy. Hence, the present review focuses on different aspects of chitosan from its synthesis to multiple applications.

Abstract
A pH responsive nanoparticle–hydrogel hybrid drug delivery system was investigated for in-depth anticancer drug delivery to solid tumours. It consists of acid susceptible polymer nanoparticles loaded in a chitosan hydrogel. The hybrid formulation was characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, FTIR, SEM, TEM, particle size analysis, zeta potential measurement and viscosity measurement. Drug encapsulation and nanoparticle loading efficiencies were found to be 48% and 72% respectively which describes the efficient interaction of the chemical entities in this hybrid drug delivery system. The hydrogel exhibited pH responsive behaviour: minimal drug and nanoparticle release at physiological pH but an increase in viscosity under acidic conditions and fast nanoparticle and drug release. The cytotoxicity of the drug loaded hydrogel was investigated against the MCF-7 breast cancer cell line along with the drug and nanoparticles without hydrogel. The drug loaded hydrogel showed a better cytotoxic effect on MCF-7 cancer cells. Thus, drug loaded nanoparticles containing hydrogel could be a better option for maximum drug distribution in tumours. A pH responsive nanoparticle–hydrogel hybrid drug delivery system was investigated for in-depth anticancer drug delivery to solid tumours.![]()

Abstract
A blend of cassava starch (CS), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and paraffin was prepared as a coating material to maintain the quality of eggs during 4 wk of storage at different temperatures. The efficacy of the CS/CMC/paraffin (6/1/0.5% w/v) coating was investigated in terms of the Haugh unit (HU), weight loss, pH, and microbial load at the end of storage. The best egg storage temperature was 4°C, which maintained an HU of grade AA in coated and uncoated eggs for 4 wk. Lower weight loss (2.14%) was observed in coated eggs at 4°C storage than at 30°C storage (3.26%). The pH in the albumen of coated and uncoated eggs at 4°C increased from 6.84 to 6.88 and 7.01 to 7.03, respectively, after 4 wk of storage. No microbes were detected in the coated and uncoated eggs at 4°C. The maximum microbial count was 728 ± 35 cfu/mL in uncoated eggs at 30°C storage. Egg coating prevented microbial contamination of eggs stored at 30°C for 4 wk. The freshness of the eggs did not affect the nutrient content. The egg-coating material effectively maintained egg quality, prevented microbial contamination of eggs, and increased the shelf life of eggs at storage temperatures of 25 and 30°C.

Abstract
Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities are important characteristics of active film packaging designed to extend food preservation. In this study, functional bio-based films were produced using different concentrations of antioxidant poly(β-pinene) bio-oligomer synthesized via organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (O-ATRP) and blended with chitosan of different molecular weights. The structural, mechanical, thermal, solubility, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties of the films were investigated. The poly(β-pinene)-chitosan blends presented significant pores and irregularities with the increase of poly(β-pinene) concentration over 30%. Chitosan molecular weight did not show any important influence in the physical properties of the blends. Poly(β-pinene) load decreased the materials' tensile strength and melting temperature, exhibiting a plasticizing effect on chitosan chains. The antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the films were improved by poly(β-pinene) incorporation and mainly depended on its concentration. Therefore, the incorporation of poly(β-pinene) in chitosan films can be an alternative for active packaging production.

Abstract
Marine sources are gaining popularity and attention as novel materials for manufacturing biopolymers such as proteins and polysaccharides. Due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-toxicity features, these biopolymers have been claimed to be beneficial in the development of food packaging materials. Several studies have thoroughly researched the extraction, isolation, and latent use of marine biopolymers in the fabrication of environmentally acceptable packaging. Thus, a review was designed to provide an overview of (a) the chemical composition, unique properties, and extraction methods of marine biopolymers; (b) the application of marine biopolymers in film and coating development for improved shelf-life of packaged foods; (c) production flaws and proposed solutions for better isolation of marine biopolymers; (d) methods of preparation of edible films and coatings from marine biopolymers; and (e) safety aspects. According to our review, these biopolymers would make a significant component of a biodegradable food packaging system, reducing the amount of plastic packaging used and resulting in considerable environmental and economic benefits.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to develop the magnolol-chitosan films and study the positive effect of the combination of magnolol and chitosan. The addition of magnolol made the magnolol-chitosan films exhibit higher density (1.06-1.87 g/cm3), but the relatively lower water vapor permeability (12.06-7.36 × 10-11·g·m-1·s-1·Pa-1) and water content (16.10-10.64%). The dense and smooth surface and cross-section of magnolol-chitosan films were observed by environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) images. The interaction of magnolol and chitosan was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). After the addition of magnolol, the antioxidant capacity of magnolol-chitosan films was increased from 18.99 to 82.00%, the growth of P. aeruginosa was inhibited and the inhibition percentage of biofilm formation was increased from 30.89 to 86.04%. We further verified that the application of magnolol-chitosan films on chilled pork significantly reduced the increases in pH value, inhibited the growth of microorganisms and extended the shelf life. Results suggest that magnolol had a positive effect on magnolol-chitosan films and could be effectively applied to pork preservation.

Abstract
Current treatment of chronic wounds has been critically limited by various factors, including bacterial infection, biofilm formation, impaired angiogenesis, and prolonged inflammation. Addressing these challenges, we developed a multifunctional wound dressing-based three-pronged approach for accelerating wound healing. The multifunctional wound dressing, composed of nanofibers, functional nanoparticles, natural biopolymers, and selected protein and peptide, can target multiple endogenous repair mechanisms and represents a promising alternative to current wound healing products.

Abstract
Active food packaging films based on chitosan and enriched with Artemisia campestris hydroalcoholic extract (ACHE), aqueous extract (ACAE) and essential oil (ACEO) were developed. The effects of incorporating A. campestris were investigated on the physical, mechanical, thermal and antioxidant characteristics of the films. The structural properties of the films were evaluated using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that adding ACHE and ACEO improved the water resistance of chitosan films. The FTIR spectroscopy analysis revealed covalent interaction and hydrogen bonding between chitosan and ACHE. The XRD and SEM analyses indicated that interactions occurred between the film matrix and A. campestris active compounds, which could be reflected by the physical and mechanical properties of composite films. Incorporating ACHE and ACAE in the chitosan matrix decreased the tensile strength. The film extensibility was reduced when ACHE and ACEO were added. All films exhibited great thermal stability as the degradation occurred above 300 °C. The addition of A. campestris active compounds, particularly extracts, to chitosan films notably increased the antioxidant and UV-Vis barrier properties. Chitosan films enriched with the A. campestris antioxidant compounds could be applied as food packaging alternatives.

Abstract
β-Acids are natural antibacterial and antioxidant ingredients, obtained from supercritical CO2 hop extract. In this study, β-acids/chitosan complex films were prepared using the casting method. Complex films were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Structure analysis revealed that β-acids can be successfully combined with the chitosan matrix. Mechanical tests demonstrated that the tensile strength of the films showed a significant upward trend (1.9 MPa to 9.6 MPa) with increase in β-acids content (0.1%-0.3%). Interestingly, the chitosan-based films showed excellent UV barrier capability below 400 nm. The release of β-acids from the film followed Fickian diffusion (n < 0.45). In addition, the complex films inhibited the growth of five food-borne pathogens (Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Salmonella enteritidis and Listeria monocytogenes). This study highlights the promising nature of composite film as a desirable alternative for active packaging.

Abstract
Chitosan is one of the most abundant natural polymer worldwide, and due to its inherent characteristics, its use in industrial processes has been extensively explored. Because it is biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic, hydrophilic, cheap, and has good physical-chemical stability, it is seen as an excellent alternative for the replacement of synthetic materials in the search for more sustainable production methodologies. Thus being, a possible biotechnological application of Chitosan is as a direct support for enzyme immobilization. However, its applicability is quite specific, and to overcome this issue, alternative pretreatments are required, such as chemical and physical modifications to its structure, enabling its use in a wider array of applications. This review aims to present the topic in detail, by exploring and discussing methods of employment of Chitosan in enzymatic immobilization processes with various enzymes, presenting its advantages and disadvantages, as well as listing possible chemical modifications and combinations with other compounds for formulating an ideal support for this purpose. First, we will present Chitosan emphasizing its characteristics that allow its use as enzyme support. Furthermore, we will discuss possible physicochemical modifications that can be made to Chitosan, mentioning the improvements obtained in each process. These discussions will enable a comprehensive comparison between, and an informed choice of, the best technologies concerning enzyme immobilization and the application conditions of the biocatalyst.

Abstract
Syringic acid, a phenolic compound, serves a variety of beneficial functions in cells. Syringic acid increases in plants in response to cesium, and exogenous application of syringic acid resulted in a significant attenuation of cesium-induced growth defects in Arabidopsis. In addition, cesium or syringic acid application to plants also resulted in increased lignin deposition in interfascicular fibers. To better understand the role of lignin and syringic acid in attenuating cesium-induced growth defects, two mutants for Arabidopsis REDUCED EPIDERMAL FLUORESCENE 4 (REF4) and fourteen laccase mutants, some of which have lower levels of lignin, were evaluated for their response to cesium. These mutants responded differently to cesium stress, compared to control plants, and the application of syringic acid alleviated cesium-induced growth defects in the laccase mutants but not in the ref4 mutants. These findings imply that lignin plays a role in cesium signaling but the attenuation of cesium stress defects by syringic acid is mediated by regulatory components of lignin biosynthesis and not lignin biosynthesis itself. In contrast, syringic acid did not alleviate any low potassium-induced growth defects. Collectively, our findings provide the first established link between lignin and cesium stress via syringic acid in plants.

Development and Characterization of Novel Active Chitosan Films Containing Fennel and Peppermint Essential Oils. COATINGS 2020. Abstract
The effects of fennel essential oil (FEO) and peppermint essential oil (PEO) on chitosan-based films were evaluated in this study. The results showed that the addition of FEO and PEO slightly increased the density and thickness, while significantly decreasing the moisture content, water swelling, and solubility properties. The color values (L, a, b, ΔE and whiteness index (WI)) of the composite films containing FEO and PEO changed obviously with a tendency toward yellowness, which was beneficial in resisting food decomposition caused by ultraviolet light. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and fourier-transform-infrared (FTIR) results indicated that the addition of FEO and PEO affected the structure of the chitosan films, while the interaction between the chitosan and polyphenols in FEO and PEO established new hydrogen bonds and improved the thermal stability. The environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) illustrated that the surfaces of the composite films containing FEO and PEO were smooth, but the cross-section was rougher than in pure chitosan film. Furthermore, the composite films containing FEO and PEO exhibited prominent antioxidant activity. In short, the novel active chitosan-based films with incorporated FEO and PEO present broad application prospects in fresh-cut meat or vegetable packaging.
