Efficient decontamination of heavy metals from aqueous solution using pullulan/polydopamine hydrogels

Acylhydrazone-functionalized starch for efficient removal of hazardous dyes, heavy metal ion, and sulfides from wastewater: Adsorption behavior and mechanism analysis

Herein, a novel acylhydrazone biosorbent (GSL) with abundant three-dimensional porous structure was successfully prepared by using low-cost starch as raw material for water pollution remediation applications. Various analytical techniques were applied to characterize the morphological structure and chemical composition. Interestingly, the adsorption efficiency of the adsorbent towards Malachite green (MG), Safranin O (SO), Cu2+, and sulfide in the static adsorption experiment was extremely high due to presence of ample functional groups. Additionally, the adsorption isotherm and kinetic experiments revealed that the adsorption processes were based on monolayer chemisorption. The maximum sorption amounts were 2237.4961 mg/g for SO, 2101.6610 mg/g for MG, 410.7019 mg/g for Cu2+, and 483.0194 mg/g for sulfides at 298.15 k. The thermodynamic analysis also demonstrated that all adsorption processes were spontaneous heat processes. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by FTIR, SEM-EDAX and XPS. The adsorption of SO onto GSL reached 1025.8617 mg/g in continuous adsorption experiments, and the experimental data were fitted through the Thomas model and Yoon-Nelson model. Furthermore, the GSL showed good reusability and salt resistance. Importantly, starch-based acylhydrazone as the adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of hazardous dyes, heavy metal ions and sulfhides has not yet been seen reported.

Revolutionizing wastewater treatment: A review on the role of advanced functional bio-based hydrogels

Water contamination poses a significant challenge to environmental and public health, necessitating sustainable wastewater treatment solutions. Adsorption is one of the most widely used techniques for purifying water, as it effectively removes contaminants by transferring them from the liquid phase to a solid surface. Bio-based hydrogel adsorbents are gaining popularity in wastewater treatment due to their versatility in fabrication and modification methods, which include blending, grafting, and crosslinking. Owning to their unique structure and large surface area, modified hydrogels containing reactive groups like amino, hydroxyl, and carboxyl, or functionalized hydrogels with inorganic nanoparticles particularly graphene nanomaterials, have demonstrated promising adsorption capabilities for both inorganic and organic contaminants. Bio-based hydrogels have excellent physicochemical properties and are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and biodegradable, making them extremely effective at removing contaminants like heavy metal ions, dyes, pharmaceutical pollutants, and organic micropollutants. The versatility of hydrogels allows for various forms to be used, such as films, beads, and nanocomposites, providing flexibility in handling different contaminants like dyes, radionuclides, and heavy metals. Additionally, researchers also have shown the potential for recycling and regenerating post-treatment hydrogels. This approach not only addresses the challenges of wastewater treatment but also offers sustainable and effective solutions for mitigating water pollution.

Surface modified of chitosan by TiO2@MWCNT nanohybrid for the efficient removal of organic dyes and antibiotics

Considering the increase in the discharge of industrial effluents containing dyes and antibiotic resistance as a consequence of increasing the prescription and easy distribution of antibiotic drugs at the global level, designing efficient, biodegradable and non-toxic absorbents is necessary to reduce environmental harm effects. Herein, we present a series of novel eco-friendly ternary hybrid nanocomposite hydrogels CS/TiO2@MWCNT (CTM) composed of chitosan (CS), TiO2, and multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) for removal of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) and common antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) in aqueous medium. The combination of MWCNT and TiO2 improves the physicochemical properties of CS hydrogel and increases the adsorption capacity toward pollutants in the presence of different loadings. CTM hydrogel showed a specific surface area of 236.45 m2 g-1 with a pore diameter of 7.89 nm. Adsorption mechanisms were investigated in detail using kinetic, isotherm, and thermodynamic studies of adsorption as well as various spectroscopic techniques. Adsorption of these pollutants by CTM nanocomposite hydrogel occurred using various interactions at different pHs, which showed the obvious dependence of CTM adsorption capacity on pH. Electrostatic attractions, complex formation, π-π stacking and hydrogen bonds played a key role in the adsorption process. The adsorption of MB, MO, and CIP was fitted with the Langmuir isotherm with maximum adsorption capacities of 531.91, 1763.6, and 1510.5 mg g-1, respectively. CTM had a minor decrease in adsorption strength and showed good structural stability even after 8 adsorptions-desorption cycles. The total cost of producing a 1 kg adsorbent was calculated to be $ 450, which helped us determine the economic feasibility of the adsorbent in large-scale applications.

Multifaceted Hydrogel Scaffolds: Bridging the Gap between Biomedical Needs and Environmental Sustainability

Notably, protein-based hydrogels mimic the extracellular matrix, promoting cell adhesion. Further enhancing cell proliferation within these scaffolds are matrix-metalloproteinase-triggered amino acid motifs. Integration of cell-friendly modules like peptides and proteins expands hydrogel functionality. These exceptional properties position hydrogels for diverse applications, including biomedicine, biosensors, environmental remediation, and the food industry. Despite significant progress, there is ongoing research to optimize hydrogels for biomedical and environmental applications further. Engineering novel hydrogels with favorable characteristics is crucial for regulating tissue architecture and facilitating ecological remediation. This review explores the synthesis, physicochemical properties, and biological implications of various hydrogel types and their extensive applications in biomedicine and environmental sectors. It elaborates on their potential applications, bridging the gap between advancements in the healthcare sector and solutions for environmental issues.

Carrageenan/calcium alginate composite hydrogel filtration membranes for efficient cationic dye separation

The development of biopolymer-based filtration systems for water remediation applications is an extremely fascinating area of research. In this paper, we developed a biopolymer-based filtration system using sodium alginate (NaAlg) and carrageenan (Car) for the removal of the toxic cationic dye, methylene blue (MB). The membrane's properties were assessed using FTIR, TGA, UTM, FESEM, EDS, XRD, and water uptake, revealing commendable thermomechanical stability (5.79 MPa), good hydrophilicity, and compatibility. The experimental results further revealed that lambda Car/calcium alginate (λ-Car/CaAlg) exhibited superior dye rejection (100%) and flux (11.67 L m-2 h-1) compared to kappa Car/CaAlg (κ-Car/CaAlg) (99.22% and 11.19 L m-2 h-1) and plain alginate (CaAlg) (99.63% and 9.79 L m-2 h-1). The high MB rejection rate was attributed to the sieving mechanism and electrostatic interaction. A rejection rate of 100% was achieved at an initial MB concentration of 10 mg/L, pressure of 0.1 MPa, pH of 7, and temperature of 25°C. Furthermore, the hydrogel membranes demonstrated excellent recyclability over nine cycles, indicating their potential for water treatment applications.

Annona squamosa Fruit Extract Ameliorates Lead Acetate-Induced Testicular Injury by Modulating JAK-1/STAT-3/SOCS-1 Signaling in Male Rats

Lead (Pb) is a common pollutant that is not biodegradable and gravely endangers the environment and human health. Annona squamosa fruit has a wide range of medicinal uses owing to its phytochemical constituents. This study evaluated the effect of treatment with A. squamosa fruit extract (ASFE) on testicular toxicity induced in male rats by lead acetate. The metal-chelating capacity and phytochemical composition of ASFE were determined. The LD50 of ASFE was evaluated by probit analysis. Molecular docking simulations were performed using Auto Dock Vina. Forty male Sprague Dawley rats were equally divided into the following groups: Gp1, a negative control group; Gp2, given ASFE (350 mg/kg body weight (b. wt.)) (1/10 of LD50); Gp3, given lead acetate (PbAc) solution (100 mg/kg b. wt.); and Gp4, given PbAc as in Gp3 and ASFE as in Gp2. All treatments were given by oro-gastric intubation daily for 30 days. Body weight changes, spermatological parameters, reproductive hormone levels, oxidative stress parameters, and inflammatory biomarkers were evaluated, and molecular and histopathological investigations were performed. The results showed that ASFE had promising metal-chelating activity and phytochemical composition. The LD50 of ASFE was 3500 mg/kg b. wt. The docking analysis showed that quercetin demonstrated a high binding affinity for JAK-1 and STAT-3 proteins, and this could make it a more promising candidate for targeting the JAK-1/STAT-3 pathway than others. The rats given lead acetate had defective testicular tissues, with altered molecular, biochemical, and histological features, as well as impaired spermatological characteristics. Treatment with ASFE led to a significant mitigation of these dysfunctions and modulated the JAK-1/STAT-3/SOCS-1 axis in the rats.

Synergistic adsorption of methylene blue with carrageenan/hydrochar-derived activated carbon hydrogel composites: Insights and optimization strategies

The study explores the use of hydrochar-derived activated carbon (AC) to improve the adsorption capacity and mechanical properties of carrageenan (CAR) hydrogel beads. Four distinct samples, with carrageenan to activated carbon ratios of 1:0 (CAR), 2:1 (CAC2), 4:1 (CAC4), and 10:1 (CAC10), were prepared. These polymeric beads underwent comprehensive evaluation for their methylene blue (MB) adsorption capacity, gel content (GC), and swelling ratio (SR). Increasing activated carbon content up to 50 % of carrageenan mass significantly enhanced GC and SR by 20.57 % and 429.24 %, respectively. Various analytical techniques were employed to characterize the composites, including FTIR, XRD, Raman Spectroscopy, BET, SEM, and EDS-Mapping. Batch adsorption tests investigated the effects of pH, contact time, dye concentration, and temperature on MB adsorption. Maximum adsorption capacities for CAR, CAC10, CAC4, and CAC2 were 475.48, 558.54, 635.93, and 552.35 mg/g, respectively, under optimal conditions. Kinetic models (Elovich and pseudo-second-order) and isotherm models (Temkin for CAR and Freundlich for CAC10, CAC4, and CAC2) fitted well with the experimental data. Thermodynamic analysis showed spontaneous, exothermic MB adsorption. Primary mechanisms include electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, n-π, and π-π stacking. The study highlights enhanced adsorption capacity of carrageenan hydrogel via carrageenan/activated carbon composites, providing cost-effective wastewater treatment.

ZnO-Ti3C2TX composites supported on polyacrylic acid/chitosan hydrogels as high-efficiency and recyclable photocatalysts for norfloxacin degradation

Photocatalysts immobilized on hydrogels is a win-win mode, which not only improves photocatalysis but also successfully prevents catalyst loss, making it easy to separate and reuse during catalytic process. Here, ZnO-Ti3C2TX photocatalysts are loaded into the chitosan/polyacrylic acid hydrogel networks, realizing the efficiently photocatalytic degradation of norfloxacin. The chitosan-based composite hydrogel features rich functional groups and a dense pore structure, which is beneficial to antibiotic enrichment and photocatalytic degradation. The effects of different catalyst ratios, dosage, initial concentrations and pH on the degradation efficiency are investigated. The norfloxacin degradation rate constant is 0.012 min-1 and its degradation efficiency reaches up to 90 % after 240 min. Importantly, the photocatalytic composite hydrogel still retains 85 % degradation efficiency after 6 cycles. Moreover, e- plays a significant role in the degradation process. This work converts the traditional powder photocatalysts into bulk photocatalysts (photocatalytic hydrogels) to accomplish efficient degradation and rapid recycling for contaminant removal.

Cationic starch: A functionalized polysaccharide based polymer for advancement of drug delivery and health care system - A review

Research and development in health care industry is in persistence progression. To make it more patient-friendly or to get maximum benefits from it, special attention to different advanced drug delivery system (ADDS) is employed that delivers the drug at the target site and will be able to sustain/control release of drugs. ADDS should be non-toxic, biodegradable, biocompatible along with desirable showing physicochemical and functional properties. These drug delivery systems can be totally based on polymers, either with natural or synthetic polymers. The molecular weight of polymer can be tuned and different groups of polymers can be modified or substituted with other functional groups. Degree of substitution is also tailored. Cationic starch in recent years is exploited in drug delivery, tissue engineering and biomedicine. Due to their abundant availability, low cost, easy chemical modification, low toxicity, biodegradability and biocompatibility, extensive research is now being carried out. Our present discussion will shed light on the usage of cationic starch in health care system.

Designing Nanoliposome-in-Natural Hydrogel Hybrid System for Controllable Release of Essential Oil in Gastrointestinal Tract: A Novel Vehicle

In this study, thyme essential oil (essential oil to total lipid: 14.23, 20, 25, and 33.33%)-burdened nanoliposomes with/without maltodextrin solution were infused with natural hydrogels fabricated using equal volumes (1:1, v/v) of pea protein (30%) and gum Arabic (1.5%) solutions. The production process of the solutions infused with gels was verified using FTIR spectroscopy. In comparison to the nanoliposome solution (NL₁) containing soybean lecithin and essential oil, the addition of maltodextrin (molar ratio of lecithin to maltodextrin: 0.80, 0.40, and 0.20 for NL₂, NL₃, and NL₄, respectively) to these solutions led to a remarkable shift in particle size (487.10-664.40 nm), negative zeta potential (23.50-38.30 mV), and encapsulation efficiency (56.25-67.62%) values. Distortions in the three-dimensional structure of the hydrogel (H2) constructed in the presence of free (uncoated) essential oil were obvious in the photographs when compared to the control (H1) consisting of a pea protein-gum Arabic matrix. Additionally, the incorporation of NL₁ caused visible deformations in the gel (HNL₁). Porous surfaces were dominant in H1 and the hydrogels (HNL₂, HNL₃, and HNL₄) containing NL₂, NL₃, and NL₄ in the SEM images. The most convenient values for functional behaviors were found in H1 and HNL₄, followed by HNL₃, HNL₂, HNL₁, and H2. This hierarchical order was also valid for mechanical properties. The prominent hydrogels in terms of essential oil delivery throughout the simulated gastrointestinal tract were HNL₂, HNL₃, and HNL₄. To sum up, findings showed the necessity of mediators such as maltodextrin in the establishment of such systems.

Advances in the use of nanomaterials for nucleic acid detection in point-of-care testing devices: A review

The outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19) has heightened awareness of the importance of quick and easy testing. The convenience, speed, and timely results from point-of-care testing (POCT) in all vitro diagnostic devices has drawn the strong interest of researchers. However, there are still many challenges in the development of POCT devices, such as the pretreatment of samples, detection sensitivity, specificity, and so on. It is anticipated that the unique properties of nanomaterials, e.g., their magnetic, optical, thermal, and electrically conductive features, will address the deficiencies that currently exist in POCT devices. In this review, we mainly analyze the work processes of POCT devices, especially in nucleic acid detection, and summarize how novel nanomaterials used in various aspects of POCT products can improve performance, with the ultimate aims of offering new ideas for the application of nanomaterials and the overall development of POCT devices.

Structure and Adsorption Performance of Cationic Entermorpha prolifera Polysaccharide-Based Hydrogel for Typical Pollutants: Methylene Blue, Cefuroxime, and Cr (VI)

Hydrogels with polysaccharides as high polymer substrates have surprising advantages in wastewater treatment with complex components. Therefore, in this study, polysaccharides named EPS were extracted from Enteromorpha prolifera, a coastal pollutant with a wide range of sources, and cationic modification was performed to obtain CAEPS, the hydrogel with a double network structure was prepared based on EPS and CAEPS. Meanwhile, the structural characteristic of EPS and CAEPS-based hydrogel were identified by HPLC, AFM, FT-IR, TGA, SEM-EDS, Pore size distribution, and WCA, which showed that the porosity, apparent (skeletal) density, and hydrophilicity of CAEPS-hydrogels. We used nonlinear isotherms to uncover the adsorption mechanism of hydrogel applied to the water environment containing three typical pollutants (Methylene blue, Cefuroxime, and Cr (VI)). The results showed that the adsorption isotherm of the two hydrogels fit the Langmuir isotherm model, which indicated the monolayer adsorption of the pollution factor onto EPS- and CAEPS-hydrogels. The maximum adsorption capacities of CAEPS-hydrogels were higher than EPS-hydrogels, which indicated the microstructure and adsorption performance of the CAEPS-hydrogel are strengthened.

Advances in Metal-Organic Frameworks MIL-101(Cr)

MIL-101(Cr) is one of the most well-studied chromium-based metal-organic frameworks, which consists of metal chromium ion and terephthalic acid ligand. It has an ultra-high specific surface area, large pore size, good thermal/chemical/water stability, and contains unsaturated Lewis acid sites in its structure. Due to the physicochemical properties and structural characteristics, MIL-101(Cr) has a wide range of applications in aqueous phase adsorption, gas storage and separation, and catalysis. In this review, the latest synthesis of MIL-101(Cr) and its research progress in adsorption and catalysis are reviewed.

DNA Templated Silver Nanoclusters for Bioanalytical Applications: A Review

Due to their unique programmability, biocompatibility, photostability and high fluorescent quantum yield, DNA templated silver nanoclusters (DNA Ag NCs) have attracted increasing attention for bioanalytical application. This review summarizes the recent developments in fluorescence properties of DNA templated Ag NCs, as well as their applications in bioanalysis. Finally, we herein discuss some current challenges in bioanalytical applications, to promote developments of DNA Ag NCs in biochemical analysis.

Hydrogel-Based Adsorbent Material for the Effective Removal of Heavy Metals from Wastewater: A Comprehensive Review

Water is a vital resource that is required for social and economic development. A rapid increase in industrialization and numerous anthropogenic activities have resulted in severe water contamination. In particular, the contamination caused by heavy metal discharge has a negative impact on human health and the aquatic environment due to the non-biodegradability, toxicity, and carcinogenic effects of heavy metals. Thus, there is an immediate need to recycle wastewater before releasing heavy metals into water bodies. Hydrogels, as potent adsorbent materials, are a good contenders for treating toxic heavy metals in wastewater. Hydrogels are a soft matter formed via the cross-linking of natural or synthetic polymers to develop a three-dimensional mesh structure. The inherent properties of hydrogels, such as biodegradability, swell-ability, and functionalization, have made them superior applications for heavy metal removal. In this review, we have emphasized the recent development in the synthesis of hydrogel-based adsorbent materials. The review starts with a discussion on the methods used for recycling wastewater. The discussion then shifts to properties, classification based on various criteria, and surface functionality. In addition, the synthesis and adsorption mechanisms are explained in detail with the understanding of the regeneration, recovery, and reuse of hydrogel-based adsorbent materials. Therefore, the cost-effective, facile, easy to modify and biodegradable hydrogel may provide a long-term solution for heavy metal removal.

Downstream processing and structural confirmation of pullulan - A comprehensive review

Pullulan is a microbial polymer, commercially produced from Aureobasidium pullulans. Downstream processing of pullulan involves a multi-stage process which should be efficient, safe and reproducible. In liquid-liquid separations, firstly cell free extract is separated. Cell biomass can be separated after fermentation either by centrifugation or filtration. Due to practically insolubility of pullulan in organic solvents, ethanol and isopropanol are the most commonly used organic solvents for its recovery. Pullulan can also be purified by chromatographic techniques, but these are not cost effective for the purification of pullulan. Efficient aqueous two-phase system can be used for the purification of pullulan. The current review describes the methods and perspectives used for solid-liquid separation, liquid-liquid separations and finishing steps for the recovery of pullulan. Techniques used to determine the structural attributes of pullulan have also been highlighted.

Response Surface Method Based Modeling and Optimization of CMC-g Terpolymer Interpenetrating Network/Bentonite Superabsorbent Composite for Enhancing Water Retention

Water shortages have become a serious issue, so the importance of developing innovative cellulose-based superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was experimentally assessed as an environmentally friendly alternative to acrylate-based SAPs for the optimization of water consumption. The development of a biodegradable superabsorbent hydrogel composite based on a graft copolymer of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and mixtures of different comonomers such as an acrylamide-co-acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (Am-co-AA-co-AMPS) CMC-g-TerPoly interpenetrating network was characterized by infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scan electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and swelling capacity in different aqueous media. The optimized CMC-g-(TerPoly) composite showing outstanding superabsorbance with high water retention, the ratio of constituents, temperature, and pH effect on equilibrium swelling have been optimized by using multistage response surface methodology (RSM). In distilled water (d-water), the equilibrium water absorption capacity (EW) of the synthesized composite hydrogels (SAP-IPN1) is 1200 g (d-water/1g hydrogel) which is superior to any other commercial polyacrylate SAP hydrogels, while in saline water the EW is 650 g (s-water/1g hydrogel). The performance of the SAP-IPN for water retention was evaluated by studying several swelling/deswelling cycle measurements. The prepared SAP-IPN hydrogels were found to show pH and salt solution dependence on the swelling behavior. The new SAP-IPN can work with commercial SAP, which is recommended for application as a water reservoir in arid land for irrigation for agriculture purposes.

S-nitrosoglutathione functionalized polydopamine nanoparticles incorporated into chitosan/gelatin hydrogel films with NIR-controlled photothermal/NO-releasing therapy for enhanced wound healing

Nitric oxide (NO) has aroused wide interest in the treating infected wounds due to its characteristic functionalities. However, its utilization is limited due to its volatile properties, high reactivity, direct potential toxicity, and byproducts of NO donors limited its application. Herein, endogenously NO donor S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) was connected covalently to polydopamine nanoparticles (PDA-GSNO NPs) to minimize the loss of NO in aqueous medium. Meanwhile, near-infrared (NIR)-controlled NO release and photothermal therapy (PTT) was obtained through the photothermal conversion by PDA. Then chitosan (CS)/gelatin (GE) biocomposite hydrogel films with preferable biocompatibility, surface hydrophilicity, hydroabsorptivity, and mechanical adhesive properties were constructed. By embedding PDA-GSNO NPs into the films, a multifunctional wound dressing was fabricated. Under NIR light irradiation, the combination of PTT, NO-releasing, and CS antibacterial agents can strengthen the in vitro antimicrobial efficacy and in vivo wound healing activities. Meanwhile, the obtained wound dressing presented good biocompatibility. This work outlines an approach for combating bacterial infections and demonstrating the possibility for synergistic NO-releasing wound healing.

Facile formation of injectable quaternized chitosan/tannic acid hydrogels with antibacterial and ROS scavenging capabilities for diabetic wound healing

The wound healing process of the diabetic wound is often hindered by excessive oxygen free radicals and infection. An ideal wound dressing should possess great reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging property and considerable antibacterial ability. In this study, we facilely constructed a novel hydrogel dressing with excellent ROS scavenging property and outstanding antibacterial performance by introducing tannic acid (TA) into quaternized chitosan (QCS) matrix. Attributing to the suitable physical crosslinking between TA and QCS, this QCS/TA hydrogel was endowed with injectable and self-healing properties, which could avoid the various external squeezing on the irregular shape by wound dressing. The results showed that it could promote coagulation, suppress inflammation and expedite collagen deposition in the skin defect model of diabetic rats. This study provides a facile and convenient method for constructing injectable hydrogel dressing, which has application potentials in the clinical management of diabetic wounds.

Functionalized Activated Carbon Fibers by Hydrogen Peroxide and Polydopamine for Efficient Trace Lead Removal from Drinking Water

To achieve efficient and selective trace heavy metals removal from drinking water, a low-cost purification material polydopamine/activated carbon fibers (PDA/H-ACF) was successfully prepared by polymerizing dopamine on the surface of activated carbon fibers pretreated with hydrogen peroxide. The morphology, phase, surface functional groups, specific surface, and pore size distribution of the as-prepared sample were analyzed using FESEM, XPS, BET and pore size distribution test (PST), and FTIR, and orthogonal experiments were used to investigate the influences of concentration of H₂O₂, pretreatment time, and reflux temperature on trace lead removal. The results showed that the sample pretreated under optimized conditions could produce different pore structures, and the content of functional group -COOH obviously increased. After further modification by polydopamine, the contents of -NH-, -NH₂, and -OH functional groups on the surface obviously enhanced, which were beneficial to increase adsorption site and promote trace lead removal. The effluent lead concentration decreased from initial 150 to 3.18 ppb within 5 min, meeting the requirement of NSF International Standard/American National Standard for Drinking Water Treatment Units (NSF/ANSI 53-2020) (5 ppb). The isothermal adsorption process and adsorption kinetics could be well-fitted by the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetics model, indicating that the adsorption process of trace lead by PDA/H-ACF belonged to monolayer and chemical adsorption. Moreover, the as-prepared PDA/H-ACF also showed superior trace lead adsorption performance in the presence of high concentration competitive metal ions, in a wide pH range and in tap water, and therefore had good application prospect in the field of drinking water purification.

Surface coating prolongs the degradation and maintains the mechanical strength of surgical suture in vivo

Biodegradable and absorbable sutures have been widely used in surgical procedures. However, for the repair of ligament and tendon injures, the biodegradable suture cannot provide sufficient mechanical support to close the wound for a long period of time which is important to completely heal the tissue. Herein, we develop a simple method that makes a surface coating to prolong the degradation of the suture in vivo. Polylactic acid (PLLA) and Polycaprolactone (PCL) were successfully coated to a commercial degradable polydioxanone (PDO) suture in this study, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the smooth surface of the coated sutures. Moreover, live/dead assay of human fibroblasts after co-culturing with the modified/unmodified sutures showed fairly good cellular activity. In vivo study demonstrates the degradation properties of sutures were significantly changed after the surface coating. The raw suture exhibited the fastest degradation in 12 weeks, showing significantly decline in mechanical strength. Interestingly, the PCL-coated suture was able to maintain more than 20% of its original tensile strength after 12 weeks' implantation. In addition, in vivo results of PCL-coated sutures also showed less inflammatory cell infiltration and less surface inflammation. These findings indicate the one step suture-coating method could be feasibly for the development of clinical equipment.

Carrageenan-based nano-hybrid materials for the mitigation of hazardous environmental pollutants

Fast industrialization and population growth are associated with the increased release of hazardous contaminants in the environment. These hazardous substances, including pharmaceutical, biomedical, personal-care products, heavy metals, endocrine-disrupters, and colorants, pollute the ecosystem by disturbing nature's balance. Nanotechnology has paved new horizons in biochemical engineering by designing novel approaches of integrating nanoscale science with biotechnology to construct improved quality materials for target uptake of pollutants. Recently, nanostructured materials have emerged as research and development frontiers owing to their excellent properties. The tailored designing of nanohybrids constructs with physicochemical alteration enables the nano-bioadsorbent with high target specificity and efficiency. The development of eco-friendly, biodegradable, cost-efficient, and biopolymer-based nanohybrid constructs is gaining attention to remove hazardous environmental pollutants. κ-carrageenan biopolymer is frequently used with different nanomaterials to design nanohybrid bio-adsorbents to remove various contaminants. Herein, the potentialities of carrageenan-based nanohybrid constructs in environmental remediation have been summarized. Different nanostructures, e.g., silica, non-magnetic/magnetic, carbon nanotubes/nanorods, nanoclay/nanomembrane, metal organic frameworks, graphene oxide, and other nanomaterials have been described in combination with carrageenan biopolymers focusing on environmental remediation.

Zn2+ removal from the aqueous environment using a polydopamine/hydroxyapatite/Fe3O4 magnetic composite under ultrasonic waves

In this study, an easily magnetically recoverable polydopamine (PDA)-modified hydroxyapatite (HAp)/Fe3O4 magnetic composite (HAp/Fe3O4/PDA) was suitably synthesized to exploit its adsorption capacity to remove Zn2+ from aqueous solution, and its structural properties were thoroughly examined using different analytical techniques. The effect of multiple parameters like pH, ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, adsorbent dose, and initial Zn2+ concentration on the adsorption efficiency was assessed using RSM-CCD. According to the acquired results, by increasing the adsorbent quantity, ultrasonic power, ultrasonic time, and pH, the Zn2+ adsorption efficiency increased and the interaction between the variables of ultrasonic power/Zn2+ concentration, pH/Zn2+ concentration, pH/absorbent dose, and ultrasonic time/adsorbent dose has a vital role in the Zn2+ adsorption. The uptake process of Zn2+ onto PDA/HAp/Fe3O4 followed Freundlich and pseudo-second order kinetic models. The maximum capacity of Zn2+ adsorption (q m) obtained by PDA/HAp/Fe3O4, HAp/Fe3O4, and HAp was determined as 46.37 mg g-1, 40.07 mg g-1, and 37.57 mg g-1, respectively. Due to its good performance and recoverability (ten times), the HAp/Fe3O4/PDA magnetic composite can be proposed as a good candidate to eliminate Zn2+ ions from a water solution.

Simple ultrasonic-assisted approach to prepare polysaccharide-based aerogel for cell research and histocompatibility study

Salecan, a water-soluble microbial polysaccharide with attractive biocompatible characteristics, is very suitable for aerogel fabrication. However, the practical application of salecan-based aerogels for cell culture was limited by complicated preparation method, lack of cell anchorage signals, and the ability to modulate this properly. Here, a smart aerogel was designed by ultrasonic-assisted self-assembly of salecan and cationic starch (CAS) without any organic and toxic crosslinkers. The ultrasound waves generated a marked impact on self-assemble process by means of ultrasonic cavitation. Aerogel network was produced by strong electrostatic attractions between the polysaccharides. Especially, salecan/CAS ratio can be precisely modulated to tailor the hydrophilicity, mechanical stiffness, and morphologic property. The specific surface area of the aerogels gradually increased with the increase in salecan/CAS ratio. These aerogels were non-cytotoxic, and the incorporation of salecan into them promoted cell-matrix interactions by directionally supporting cell adhesion and proliferation. Most strikingly, in vivo experiment revealed that the histological features in the main organs of the mice were similar to those observed in the PBS-treated control group, and no sign of the histopathological abnormality or tissue destruction was observed, indicating the excellent histocompatibility of the aerogels. This study offered a new and powerful avenue to fabricate functional biomaterial.

Analysis of Copper(II), Cobalt(II) and Iron(III) Sorption in Binary and Ternary Systems by Chitosan-Based Composite Sponges Obtained by Ice-Segregation Approach

With the intensive industrial activity worldwide, water pollution by heavy metal ions (HMIs) has become a serious issue that requires strict and careful monitoring, as they are extremely toxic and can cause serious hazards to the environment and human health. Thus, the effective and efficient removal of HMIs still remains a challenge that needs to be solved. In this context, copper(II), cobalt(II) and iron(III) sorption by chitosan (CS)-based composite sponges was systematically investigated in binary and ternary systems. The composites sponges, formed into beads, consisting of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)- or diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA)-functionalized CS, entrapping a natural zeolite (Z), were prepared through an ice-segregation technique. The HMI sorption performance of these cryogenically structured composite materials was assessed through batch experiments. The HMI sorption capacities of CSZ-EDTA and CSZ-DTPA composite sponges were compared to those of unmodified sorbents. The Fe(III) ions were mainly taken up when they were in two-component mixtures with Co(II) ions at pH 4, whereas Cu(II) ions were preferred when they were in two-component mixtures with Co(II) ions at pH 6. The recycling studies indicated almost unchanged removal efficiency for all CS-based composite sorbents even after the fifth cycle of sorption/desorption, supporting their remarkable chemical stability and recommending them for the treatment of HMI-containing wastewaters.

Functionalized Biomass Carbon-Based Adsorbent for Simultaneous Removal of Pb2+ and MB in Wastewater

It is of great significance to realize the sustainable development of the environment to synthesize functional materials by value-added utilization of waste resources. Herein, a composite material of polyacrylic acid/lignosulfonate sodium/cotton biochar (PAA/LS/BC) was successfully prepared by grafting polyacrylic acid with functionalized waste cotton biochar and lignosulfonate sodium. The obtained absorbent showed prominent capture ability toward Pb²⁺ and methylene blue (MB) with capture characteristics of the pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. This experiment explored the adsorption performance of the adsorbent for pollutants at different conditions, and further revealed the selective adsorption of Pb²⁺ and MB in the mixed system. Analysis confirmed that electrostatic attraction and complexation are the most critical methods to remove contaminants. Additionally, the regeneration and stability experiment showed that the adsorption capacity of PAA/LS/BC for pollutants did not significantly decrease after five runs of adsorption–desorption. Various results can demonstrate that the adsorbent has excellent performance for removing pollutants and can be used as a material with development potential in the field of adsorption.

Insights on Cadmium Removal by Bioremediation: The Case of Haloarchaea

Although heavy metals are naturally found in the environment as components of the earth’s crust, environmental pollution by these toxic elements has increased since the industrial revolution. Some of them can be considered essential, since they play regulatory roles in different biological processes; but the role of other heavy metals in living tissues is not clear, and once ingested they can accumulate in the organism for long periods of time causing adverse health effects. To mitigate this problem, different methods have been used to remove heavy metals from water and soil, such as chelation-based processes. However, techniques like bioremediation are leaving these conventional methodologies in the background for being more effective and eco-friendlier. Recently, different research lines have been promoted, in which several organisms have been used for bioremediation approaches. Within this context, the extremophilic microorganisms represent one of the best tools for the treatment of contaminated sites due to the biochemical and molecular properties they show. Furthermore, since it is estimated that 5% of industrial effluents are saline and hypersaline, halophilic microorganisms have been suggested as good candidates for bioremediation and treatment of this kind of samples. These microorganisms, and specifically the haloarchaea group, are of interest to design strategies aiming the removal of polluting compounds due to the efficiency of their metabolism under extreme conditions and their significant tolerance to highly toxic compounds such as heavy metals, bromate, nitrite, chlorate, or perchlorate ions. However, there are still few trials that have proven the bioremediation of environments contaminated with heavy metals using these microorganisms. This review analyses scientific literature focused on metabolic capabilities of haloarchaea that may allow these microbes to tolerate and eliminate heavy metals from the media, paying special attention to cadmium. Thus, this work will shed light on potential uses of haloarchaea in bioremediation of soils and waters negatively affected by heavy metals, and more specifically by cadmium.

Exploring biologically active hybrid pharmacophore N-substituted hydrazine-carbothioamides for urease inhibition: In vitro and in silico approach

Urease is potential target for various human's health complications, such as peptic ulcer, gastric cancer and kidney stone formation. The present study was based on synthesis of new hybrid pharmacophore N-substituted hydrazine-carbothioamides as potential urease inhibitors. Presented method gave excellent yield in range of 85-95% for hydrazine-carbothioamides derivatives (3a-s) after reaction of mono- and disubstituted hydrazides (1a-k) and substituted isothiocyanates (2a-d). All newly derivatives were characterized by advanced spectroscopic techniques (FTIR, ¹HNMR, ¹³CNMR, EMS) and were assessed for their urease inhibition potential. All analogs except for 3k, 3l and 3m demonstrated strong inhibitory potential for urease with IC₅₀ values of 8.45 ± 0.14 to 25.72 ± 0.23 μM as compared to standard thiourea (IC₅₀ 21.26 ± 0.35 μM). The structure-activity relationship and mode of interaction was established by molecular docking studies. It was revealed that the N-substituted hydrazine-carbothioamides interacted with nickel atoms present in the active site of urease and supported the correlations with the experimental findings. Therefore, the afforded hydrazine-carbothioamides derivatives are interesting hits for urease inhibition studies with future prospects of modification and optimization.

ε‑Polylysine-stabilized agarose/polydopamine hydrogel dressings with robust photothermal property for wound healing

Polydopamine (PDA) is emerging as an attractive photothermal agent due to its good photothermal performance and excellent biocompatibility. However, without chemical modification, PDA is normally unstable and usually leached out from the constructed biomaterials, realistically limiting its application space. Here, we constructed a new hydrogel dressing with robust and stable photothermal performance by introduction of ε-Polylysine (ε-PL) into agarose/PDA matrix to efficiently lock PDA. By optimizing PDA/ε-PL rational dose in agarose network structure, a hybrid agarose/PDA/ε-PL hydrogel (ADPH) with stable photothermal functionality and desirable physicochemical properties could be achieved. ADPH possessed satisfactory microbicidal efficacy in vivo, which enabled the bacteria-infected skin wound to be cured quickly by successful suppressing inflammation, accelerating collagen deposition and promoting angiogenesis in a bacterial-infected wound model. Collectively, this study illustrates a simple, convenient but powerful strategy to design functionally stable ADPH dressing for treating dermal wounds, which could open vistas in clinical wound management.

Highly Fluorescent N-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots Derived from Bamboo Stems for Selective Detection of Fe3+ Ions in Biological Systems

The establishment of sensing platform for trace analysis of Fe³⁺ in biological systems is meaningful for health monitoring. Herein, a Fe³⁺ sensitive fluorescent nanoprobe was constructed based on highly fluorescent N-doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) derived from bamboo stems through a hydrothermal method employing ethylenediamine as the nitrogen dopant. The prepared NCQDs had a uniformly distributed size and their mean size was around 2.43 nm. Abundant functional groups (C=N, N-H, C=O, and carboxyl) anchored on NCQDs demonstrated successful doping of N in CQDs. The obtained NCQDs possessed a high fluorescence quantum yield of 20.02% and outstanding fluorescence stability over a wide pH range and at high ionic strengths. Moreover, Fe³⁺ ions presented a specific fluorescent quenching effect to the as-prepared NCQDs. The calibration curve for fluorescence quenching degree corresponding to Fe³⁺ concentration showed a linear response in a range of 0.01-10 µM, and detection limit was 0.486 µM, which indicated that the NCQDs had high sensitivity to Fe³⁺ ions. Ascribed to these unique properties, the NCQDs were selected as luminescent probes for trace amount of Fe³⁺ ions in human serum. These results demonstrated their promising use in clinical diagnostics and other biologically relevant studies.

Self-healing and toughness cellulose nanocrystals nanocomposite hydrogels for strain-sensitive wearable flexible sensor

Recently, self-healing and high mechanical strength hydrogels have aroused much research due to their potential future in strain-sensitive flexible sensors. In this manuscript, we successfully designed self-healing and toughness cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) nanocomposite hydrogels by grafted polypyrrole (PPy) on the surface of CNCs to enhance electrical conductivity. The obtained nanocomposite hydrogels exhibit outstanding self-healing and mechanical behaviors, and the optimal mechanical strength, toughness and self-healing efficiency can be up to 5.7 MPa, 810% and 89.6%, respectively. Using these functional nanocomposite hydrogels, strain-sensitive wearable flexible sensors were designed to monitor finger joint motions, bending of knee, and even the slight pulse beating. Surprisingly, the flexible sensors could evidently perceive body motions from large movements (knee bending) to tiny signals (pulse beating). In addition, it exhibited excellent durability after repeated cycles. This method of prepared self-healing nanocomposite hydrogels will have a potential prospect in the design of biomedical, biosensors, and flexible electronic devices.

Aggregation-Induced Emission Fluorescent Gels: Current Trends and Future Perspectives

The development of fluorescent gels, if not the current focus, is at the center of recent efforts devoted to the invention of a new generation of gels. Fluorescent gels have numerous properties that are intrinsic to the gel structure, with additional light-emitting properties making them attractive for different applications. This review focuses on current studies associated with the development of fluorescent gels using aggregation-induced emission fluorophores (AIEgens) to ultimately suggest new directions for future research. Here, we discuss major drawbacks of the methodologies used frequently for the fabrication of fluorescent gels using traditional fluorophores compared to those using AIEgens. The fabrication strategies to develop AIE-based fluorescent gels, including physical mixing, soaking, self-assembly, noncovalent interactions, and permanent chemical reactions, are discussed thoroughly. New and recent findings on developing AIE-active gels are explained. Specifically, physically prepared AIE-based gels including supramolecular, ionic, and chemically prepared AIE-based gels are discussed. In addition, the intrinsic fluorescent properties of natural gels, known as clustering-triggered fluorescent gel, and new and recent relevant findings published in peer-reviewed journals are explained. This review also revealed the biomedical applications of AIE-based fluorescent hydrogels including drug delivery, biosensors, bioimaging, and tissue engineering. In conclusion, the current research situation and future directions are identified.

Polydopamine/montmorillonite-embedded pullulan hydrogels as efficient adsorbents for removing crystal violet

Both secondary pollution and the low mechanical strength of adsorbents have severely impeded the practical application of adsorption methods in the dye wastewater treatment. In this work, we innovatively synthesized a composite hydrogel adsorbent by incorporating polydopamine (PDA) and montmorillonite (MMT) into the pullulan hydrogel matrix for dye adsorption. First, the successful formation of the resultant adsorbents was verified by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscope elemental mapping analysis. Then, several physicochemical properties (such as thermal and swelling properties, microarchitecture, and mechanical strength) of the five prepared adsorbents (PM1-PM5) were investigated. These results demonstrated the adsorbents had tunable properties, which can be achieved by adjusting the PDA/MMT mass ratio. Next, the dye adsorption performance was systematically explored. The resultant adsorbent (PM3) had a maximum adsorption capacity of 112.45 mg/g and its adsorption data was best described by a Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic. Finally, the adsorption mechanisms and potential commercial practicability of the adsorbent were studied. Altogether, the designed adsorbent could effectively avoid generating the secondary pollution typical of adsorbents and it displayed excellent mechanical strength, thus opening up a new horizon in mitigating environmental pollution from textile industries.

Hybrid nanocomposite of kappa-carrageenan and magnetite as adsorbent material for water purification

A novel polysaccharide based hydrogel; kappa-carrageenan grafted with N-hydroxyethylacrylamide (κC-g-PHEAA) was synthesized via microwave assisted free radical polymerization process. A hybrid nanocomposite has also been made by incorporation of Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles into the κC-g-PHEAA network. The materials were characterized by FTIR, TGA, XRD, SEM, BET and VSM techniques. The nanocomposite exhibited super-paramagnetic behavior. The κC-g-PHEAA and κC-g-PHEAA/Fe₃O₄ presented significant adsorption capacity towards cationic dyes, methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine 6G (R6G); and metal ions, Cu(II) and Hg(II) from aqueous solution. The magnetite nanoparticles enhance the adsorption characteristics of the hydrogel and enables easy separation of the adsorbent with an external magnetic field. Adsorption process is observed to follow both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models for R6G and Freundlich isotherm model for MB, Cu(II) and Hg(II). The adsorption was found to be a pseudo first order process for MB and pseudo second order process for R6G, Cu(II) and Hg(II). Thermodynamic studies have shown the adsorption of dyes and metal ions to be spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The desorption studies revealed the efficient recovery of adsorbate species. The study indicates that the synthesized adsorbents have potential applications for the removal of dyes and metal ions from wastewater.

Effects of Microplastics on the Adsorption and Bioavailability of Three Strobilurin Fungicides

Microplastics (MPs) and fungicides have been recognized as two main pollutants in ecological environments, especially in aqueous ecosystems. In this study, the adsorption behavior of three typical strobilurins (azoxystrobin, picoxystrobin, and pyraclostrobin) on polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) was investigated, and the effects of adsorption on the residual behavior and bioavailability of pyraclostrobin were evaluated. The results showed that MPs had strong adsorption capacity for the three kinds of strobilurins. Under similar conditions, the adsorption capacity was the highest for pyraclostrobin, followed by picoxystrobin and azoxystrobin, which was consistent with their octanol-water partition coefficients. Moreover, the adsorption capacity of PS was slightly higher than that of PE. The pH of aqueous solution had little effect on adsorption capacity, while an increase in ionic strength increased the adsorption capacity of azoxystrobin and picoxystrobin. The Fourier transform infrared spectra of MPs showed that no new chemical groups were formed during the adsorption process. Thus, it is speculated that hydrophobic interactions may be the driving force behind the adsorption of strobilurins on the MPs. Additionally, the adsorption of pyraclostrobin on MPs significantly reduced its residual amount in the aqueous solution, which reduced the adsorption and bioavailability of pyraclostrobin in black bean seedlings. The study provides effective information for environmental safety risk assessments with regard to the combined pollution risks of MPs and strobilurins.

A Comparative Study on Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ Metal Ions Removal from Industrial Wastewaters by Chitosan-Based Composite Cryogels

Materials coming from renewable resources have drawn recently an increased attention in various applications as an eco-friendly alternative in the synthesis of novel functional materials. Polysaccharides, with their prominent representative - chitosan (CS), are well-known for their sorption properties, being able to remove metal ions from dilute solutions either by electrostatic interactions or chelation. In this context, we proposed here a comparative study on Cu2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, and Cr3+ metal ions removal from industrial wastewaters by CS-based composite cryogels using batch technique. The composite cryogels consisting of CS embedding a natural zeolite, namely clinoptilolite, were synthesized by cryogelation, and their sorption performance were compared to those of CS cryogels and of acid-activated zeolite. A deeper analysis of thermodynamics and kinetics sorption data was performed to get insights into the sorption mechanism of all metal ions onto sorbents. Based on the optimized sorption conditions, the removal of the above-mentioned ions from aqueous solutions by the composite sorbent using dynamic technique was also evaluated.

Assessment of ampicillin removal efficiency from aqueous solution by polydopamine/zirconium(iv) iodate: optimization by response surface methodology

Polydopamine/zirconium(iv) iodate was prepared by incorporating polydopamine into zirconium iodate gel and studied as an effective adsorbent for ampicillin. In order to characterize the prepared composite, FTIR, XRD, TGA-DTA, SEM and TEM were used. The effects of experimental variables on ampicillin removal were examined using response surface methodology. The optimum conditions for ampicillin removal were 7, 130 min, 20 mg/20 mL and 50 mg L-1 for pH, contact time, adsorbent dose and initial ampicillin concentration, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, the maximum ampicillin removal percentage was found to be 99.12%. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models explained the removal process more appropriately. The maximum adsorption capacity at 303 K was 100.0 mg g-1. Thermodynamic study revealed that the ampicillin adsorption was spontaneous and endothermic in nature. The reusability of the prepared material was also explored.
