Carboxymethyl cellulose-based antioxidant and antimicrobial active packaging film incorporated with curcumin and zinc oxide

Formulations based on pullulan and a derivative as coating material for the food sector

Carboxymethylated derivatives of pullulan (PU) were synthesized and evaluated as coating for the postharvest preservation of blueberries. Carboxymethylpullulan was obtained by etherification reaction with the substitution degrees of 0.52, 0.34, and 0.26 for CMP1, CMP2, and CMP3 respectively. Infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance results showed characteristic signals of the carbonyl group belonging to the carboxymethyl group. Thermal analysis showed that CMP1, CMP2, and CMP3 derivatives presented thermal stability values of 209.91 C, 214.73 C, and 225.52 °C, respectively, and were lower with respect to PU with Td of 238.84 °C. Furthermore, an increase in the glass transition temperature due to carboxymethylation was determined. The chemical modification decreased the contact angle with respect to PU (71.34°) with values for CMP1, CMP2, and CMP3 of 39.89°, 53.72° and 60.61°, respectively. The carboxymethylation also increased the water vapor permeability and mechanical properties of the films. In addition, it was found that the CMP molecules affected the optical properties. The application of CMP-based coatings reduced the mass loss and ripening rate of blueberries compared to native pullulan, therefore, packaging from CMP molecules could be used as a coating capable of delaying ripening and extending the shelf life of fruits.

Cellulose derivatives as environmentally-friendly additives in water-based drilling fluids: A review

The application of cellulose derivatives including carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), polyanionic cellulose (PAC), hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC), cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) has gained enormous interest, especially as environmentally friendly additives for water-based drilling fluids (WBDFs). This is due to their sustainable, biodegradable, and biocompatible nature. Furthermore, cellulose nanomaterials (CNMs), which include both CNFs and CNCs, possess unique properties such as nanoscale dimensions, a large surface area, as well as unique mechanical, thermal, and rheological performance that makes them stand out as compared to other additives used in WBDFs. The high surface hydration capacity, strong interaction with bentonite, and the presence of a complex network within the structure of CNMs enable them to act as efficient rheological modifiers in WBDFs. Moreover, the nano-size dimension and facilely tunable surface chemistry of CNMs make them suitable as effective fluid loss reducers as well as shale inhibitors as they have the ability to penetrate, absorb, and plug the nanopores within the exposed formation and prevent further penetration of water into the formation. This review provides an overview of recent progress in the application of cellulose derivatives, including CMC, PAC, HEC, CNFs, and CNCs, as additives in WBDFs. It begins with a discussion of the structure and synthesis of cellulose derivatives, followed by their specific application as rheological, fluid loss reducer, and shale inhibition additives in WBDFs. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives are outlined to guide further research and development in the effective utilization of cellulose derivatives as additives in WBDFs.

Preparation of curcumin-loaded chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol intelligent active films for food packaging and freshness monitoring

To fulfill the current need for intelligent active food packaging. This study incorporated the curcumin inclusion complexes (CUR-CD) into chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol polymer to develop a new intelligent active film. The structures of films were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and so on. The CP-Cur150 film displays exceptional mechanical properties, water vapor barrier, and UV blocking capabilities as demonstrated by physical analysis. The CP-Cur150 film exhibited free radical scavenging rates on 2,2-diazo-di-3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic (ABTS) (98 %) and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) (87 %). Additionally, it showed inhibitory effects on Gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), reducing live colony counts by approximately 2.7 and 1.3 Log10 CFU/mL, respectively. The films were used to monitor the shrimp's freshness in real time. With the spoilage of shrimp, the film exhibited clear color fluctuations, from light yellow to red. In addition, the evaluation of the impact of films on pork pH, total volatile basic nitrogen, and total bacterial counts demonstrated that the CP-Cur150 film displayed the most significant effectiveness in preserving freshness, thereby extending the shelf life of pork.

Carboxymethyl cellulose-based photothermal film: A sustainable packaging with high barrier and tensile strength for food long-term antibacterial protection

Traditional packaging materials feed the growing global food protection. However, these packaging materials are not conducive to environment and have not the ability to kill bacteria. Herein, a green and simple strategy is reported for food packaging protection and long-term antibacterial using carboxymethylcellulose-based photothermal film (CMC@CuS NPs/PVA) that consists of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) immobilized copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuS NPs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). With satisfied oxygen transmittance (0.03 cc/m2/day) and water vapor transmittance (163.3 g/m2/day), the tensile strength, tear strength and burst strength reached to 3401.2 N/m, 845.7 mN and 363.6 kPa, respectively, which could lift 4.5 L of water. The composite film had excellent photothermal conversion efficiency and photothermal stability. Under the irradiation of near infrared (NIR), it can rapidly heated up to 197 °C within 25 s. The antibacterial analysis showed that the inhibition rate of composite film against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli) could all reach >99 %. Furthermore, the synthesized CuS NPs was well immobilized and the residual rate of copper kept 98.7 % after 10 days. Noticeably, the composite film can preserve freshness of strawberries for up to 6 days. Therefore, the composite film has potential application for food antibacterial protection.

In situ growth of curcumin-loaded cellulose composite film for real-time monitoring of food freshness in smart packaging

Visual pH-responsive packaging material is particularly important in food supply chain safety monitoring due to their non-destructive monitoring method and intuitive result. However, it has always been limited by the instability performance of pH-response components and carriers, which further hinders its wide food safety application. To address these challenges, we selected cellulose with remarkable biocompatibility and mechanical properties as the carrier, and high pH-responsive curcumin to develop a smart packaging material (RC/GC composite film) with real-time food safety monitoring. Compared with pure cellulose film, the RC/GC composite film exhibited excellent mechanical properties (4-fold enhancement) and thermal stability (100 °C increasing). Meanwhile, based on the first reported strategy of curcumin in-situ growth during cellulose film formation, the RC/GC composite film exhibited exceptional antioxidant activity (89.2 %), antimicrobial property (91.6 %), and significant pH-responsive sensitivity (within 15 s). This innovative approach offers a new strategy for easy-to-use and effective monitoring of food spoilage in packaging materials.

Nanocellulose@gallic Acid-Based MOFs: A Novel Material for Ecofriendly Food Packaging

The development of an effective food packaging material is essential for safeguarding against infections and preventing chemical, physical, and biological changes during food storage and transportation. In the present study, we successfully synthesized an innovative food packaging material by combining chitosan (CH), nanocellulose (NC), and a gallic acid-based metal-organic framework (MOF). The CH films were prepared using different concentrations of NC (5 and 10%) and MOFs (1.5, 2.5, and 5%). Various properties of prepared films, including water solubility (WS), moisture content (MC), swelling degree, oxygen permeability, water vapor permeability (WVP), mechanical property, color analysis, and light transmittance, were studied. The chitosan film with a 5% NC and 1.5% MOF (CH-5% NC-1.5% MOF) exhibited the least water solubility, moisture content, and water vapor permeability, indicating the overall stability of the film. Additionally, this film demonstrated low oxygen permeability, as indicated by a peroxide value of 18.911 ± 4.009, ensuring the effective preservation of packaged contents. Notably, this synthesized film exhibited high antioxidant activity, resulting in an extended duration of 52 days. This antioxidant activity was further validated by the preservation of apple slices for 9 days in a CH-5% NC-1.5% MOF film. The findings of the study suggest that the developed films can provide a promising and environmentally friendly solution for active food packaging.

Carboxymethyl cellulose-based rotigotine nanocrystals-loaded hydrogel for increased transdermal delivery with alleviated skin irritation

Transdermal rotigotine (RTG) therapy is prescribed to manage Parkinson's disease (Neupro® patch). However, its use is suffered from application site reactions. Herein, drug nanocrystalline suspension (NS)-loaded hydrogel (NS-HG) employing polysaccharides simultaneously as suspending agent and hydrogel matrix was constructed for transdermal delivery, with alleviated skin irritation. RTG-loaded NS-HG was prepared using a bead-milling technique, employing sodium carboxylmethyl cellulose (Na.CMC) as nano-suspending agent (molecular weight 90,000 g/mol) and hydrogel matrix (700,000 g/mol), respectively. NS-HG was embodied as follows: drug loading: ≤100 mg/mL; shape: rectangular crystalline; crystal size: <286.7 nm; zeta potential: -61 mV; viscosity: <2.16 Pa·s; and dissolution rate: >90 % within 15 min. Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis revealed that the anionic polymers bind to RTG nanocrystals via charge interaction, affording uniform dispersion in the matrix. Rodent transdermal absorption of RTG from NS-HG was comparable to that from microemulsions, and proportional to drug loading. Moreover, NS-HG was skin-friendly; erythema and epidermal swelling were absent after repeated application. Further, NS-HG was chemically stable; >95 % of the drug was preserved up to 4 weeks under long term (25 °C/RH60%), accelerated (40 °C/RH75%), and stress (50 °C) storage conditions. Therefore, this novel cellulose derivative-based nanoformulation presents a promising approach for effective transdermal RTG delivery with improved tolerability.

The potential of carboxylmethyl cellulose from empty fruit bunch as versatile material in food coating: A review

The rising demand for food packaging has led to a growing interest in sustainable and eco-friendly food coatings. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), being a versatile cellulose derivative produced from various lignocellulosic sources, has emerged in edible food coatings. This review evaluates the research trends on CMC production from empty fruit bunch (EFB) as a potential edible food coating material by systematic review approach. It explores sustainable pre-treatment for green cellulose and different CMC synthesis methods. The review compares CMC-based coatings to other materials, focusing on formulation processes, coating quality, safety, and commercial feasibility. The bibliometric analysis is performed to correlate food coating and CMC. As a result, the study discovered the rapid growth in research on edible food coatings made from CMC for various food industry applications. The green approach such as ozone pre-treatment appear as promising method for cellulose isolation from EFB to be used as raw material for CMC. The synthesis conditions of the treatment would affect the CMC characteristics and usage. Herein, utilizing CMC from cellulose EFB in coating formulation and on coated food shows different benefits. This review provides a road map for future research with potential to make important contributions to the food industry's long-term evolution.

Reduction of biofilm and pathogenic microorganisms using curcumin-mediated photodynamic inactivation to prolong food shelf-life

Pathogenic microbial contamination (bacteria and fungi) in food products during production poses a significant global health risk, leading to food waste, greenhouse gas emissions, and aesthetic and financial losses. Bacteria and fungi, by forming solid biofilms, enhance their resistance to antimicrobial agents, thereby increasing the potential for cross-contamination of food products. Curcumin molecule-mediated photodynamic inactivation (Cur-m-PDI) technology has shown promising results in sterilizing microbial contaminants and their biofilms, significantly contributing to food preservation without compromising quality. Photosensitizers (curcumin) absorb light, leading to a chemical reaction with oxygen and producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) that effectively reduce bacteria, fungi, and biofilms. The mechanism of microorganism inhibition is caused by exposure to ROS generated via the type 1 pathway involving electron transfer (such as O2•-, H2O2, -OH•, and other radicals), the type 2 pathway involving energy transfer (such as 1O2), secondary ROS, and weakening of antioxidant enzymes. The effectiveness of the inactivation of microorganisms is influenced by the concentration of curcumin, light (source type and energy density), oxygen availability, and duration of exposure. This article reviews the mechanism of reducing microbial food contamination and inhibiting their biofilms through Cur-m-PDI. It also highlights future directions, challenges, and considerations related to the effects of ROS in oxidizing food, the toxicity of PDI to living cells and tissues, conditions/types of food products, and the stability and degradation of curcumin.

"Reservoir-law" synergistic reinforcement of electrostatic spun polylactic acid composites with cellulose nanocrystals and 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin for intelligent bioactive food packaging

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were obtained from the extraction and bleaching of jute cellulose as the enhancer, 2-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) as the carrier, the flavonoids-anthocyanidins and cinnamaldehyde as the bioactive agent, and finally a novel kind of polylactic acid (PLA)-based composite membrane was derived by electrostatic spun method. With the increasing concentration, HP-β-CDs cooperated with CNCs to regulate or control the release rate of bioactive compounds, which had a synergistic effect on the performance of the PLA matrix. The mechanical strength of PLA-3.2 composite with tannic acid (TA) surface cross-linking was 29.6 % higher than neat PLA, and could also continuously protect cells from oxidative stress and free radicals. In addition, excellent cell biocompatibility was found, and attributed to the interaction between bioactive compounds and cell membrane. In addition, we also found two excellent properties from our experimental results: obvious intelligent color reaction and good antibacterial ability. Finally, PLA-3.2 composites could be degraded by soil and are conducive to plant root growth. Hence, this work could solve many of the current problems of biodegradability and functionality of biopolymers for potential applications in areas such as intelligent bioactive food packaging.

Carboxymethyl cellulose-based multifunctional film integrated with polyphenol-rich extract and carbon dots from coffee husk waste for active food packaging applications

Sustainable carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based active composite films were developed through the addition of polyphenol-rich extract from coffee husk (CHE) and carbon dots (CDs) prepared using the biowaste residue of CHE extraction. The influences of various CDs contents on the physicochemical and functional characteristics of composite films have been researched. The 6% (w/w) CHE and 3% (w/w) CDs were uniformly dispersed within the CMC matrix to produce a homogenous film with enhanced mechanical properties. The CMC/CHE/CDs3% film exhibited outstanding UV-light blocking, improved water and gas barriers, potent antioxidant activity with above 95% DPPH and ABTS scavenging rates, and effective antibacterial capabilities against L. monocytogenes and E. coli. The food packaging experiment demonstrated that this active composite film slowed the rotting of fresh-cut apples and extended their shelf-life to 7 days at 4 °C storage. Therefore, the obtained multifunctional film showed promise as an environmentally friendly food packaging material.

Intelligent double-layer film based on gellan gum/modified anthocyanin/curcumin/sodium alginate/zinc oxide for monitoring shrimp freshness

In this study, intelligent double-layer films were prepared using modified black rice anthocyanin (MBRA)-curcumin (CUR)-gellan gum (GG) as the inner indicator layer and sodium alginate (ALG)‑zinc oxide (ZnO) as the outer antimicrobial layer. The bilayer films were successfully prepared, as revealed by scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction measurements. The mechanical characteristics, moisture content, and water vapor resistance of GG-MBRA/CUR1@ALG-ZnO, GG-MBRA/CUR2@ALG-ZnO, and GG-MBRA/CUR3@ALG-ZnO films showed significant enhancement compared to GG-MBRA/CUR3 and ALG-ZnO films. The bilayer films exhibited excellent pH responsiveness and reacted effectively to ammonia. The outer layer significantly improved the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of the inner layer. When the films were applied to shrimp, it was found that the double-layer films not only monitored the freshness of the shrimp in real-time but also were influential in extending the shelf life of the shrimp by about 1 d. Therefore, the double-layer film demonstrated potential as a smart packaging material for real-time monitoring of meat product freshness.

Gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol films loaded with doubly stabilized clove essential oil chitosomes: Preparation, characterization, and application in packing marinated steaks

In this study, a promising active food-packaging film of Gelatin/polyvinyl alcohol (GEL/PVA) integrated with doubly stabilized clove essential oil chitosome nanoparticles (CNP) was developed to maintain the freshness of marinated steaks. Results from the XRD and SEM experiments indicated excellent compatibility between the CNP and GEL/PVA matrix. Additionally, CNP was found to introduce more free hydroxyl groups, enhance the water retention and surface wettability of the CNP-GEL/PVA (C-G/P) film, and significantly reduce the swelling index from 963.78% to 495.11% (p < 0.05). Notably, the highest tensile strength and elongation at break (53.745 MPa and 46.536%, respectively) were achieved with the addition of 30% (v/v, based on the volume of gelatin) CNP; UVC was fully absorbed with 40% CNP; and films containing 60% CNP showed optimal inhibition of both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coil, extending the shelf life of marinated steak from 3 to 7 days.

ZnO nanoparticles encapsulated cellulose-lignin film for antibacterial and biodegradable food packaging

Foodborne illness caused by consuming foods contaminated by pathogens remains threating to the public health. Despite considerable efforts of using renewable source materials, it is highly demanding to fabricate food packaging with multiple properties including eco-friendliness, bactericidal effect and biocompatibility. Here, sodium lignosulfonate (SL) and ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) were used as functional filler and structure components, respectively, on the cellulose nanofibers (CNFs)-based films, which endows the produced membrane (CNF/SL-ZnO) the UV-light blocking, antioxidant, and antimicrobial characteristics. Due to the interconnected polymeric structure, the prepared CNF/SL-ZnO films possessed considerable mechanical properties, thermal stability, and good moisture barrier capability. Moreover, the tested samples exhibited an improved shelf life in food packaging. Furthermore, metagenome analysis revealed superior biodegradability of obtained films with negligible side effect on the soil microenvironment. Therefore, the biocompatible, degradable, and antibacterial CNF/SL-ZnO film holds enormous potential for sustainable uses including food packaging.

Nanocellulose/Nanoporous Silicon Composite Films as a Drug Delivery System

Nanocellulose (NC) is a promising material for drug delivery due to its high surface area-to-volume ratio, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and versatility in various formats (nanoparticles, hydrogels, microspheres, membranes, and films). In this study, nanocellulose films were derived from "Bolaina blanca" (Guazuma crinita) and combined with nanoporous silicon microparticles (nPSi) in concentrations ranging from 0.1% to 1.0% (w/v), using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a binding agent to create NC/nPSi composite films for drug delivery systems. The physicochemical properties of the samples were characterized using UV-Vis spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The mechanical properties and drug release capabilities were also evaluated using methylene blue (MB) as an antibacterial drug model. Antibacterial assays were conducted against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. The results show that NC/nPSi composites with 1% nPSi increased the T50% by 10 °C and enhanced mechanical properties, such as a 70% increase in the elastic modulus and a 372% increase in elongation, compared to NC films. Additionally, MB released from NC/nPSi composites effectively inhibited the growth of both bacteria. It was also observed that the diffusion coefficients were inversely proportional to the % nPSi. These findings suggest that this novel NC/nPSi-based material can serve as an effective controlled drug release system.

Biodegradable film of carboxymethyl cellulose modified with red onion peel powder waste and boron nitride nanoparticles: Investigation of physicochemical properties and release of active substances

The aim of this study was to modify carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films with onion peel extract (OPE) (0-2 g), onion peel powder (OPP) (0-2 g) and boron nitride nanoparticles (BN) (0-100 mg). 17 different CMC/OPE/OPP/BN films were provided and the physicochemical properties of films were studied. The release of active compounds of the composite film was investigated over time. The obtained results showed that OPE, OPP and BN increased the physical resistance and flexibility of the films. The percentage of moisture and solubility of the films decreased with the increase of OPE, OPP and BN. By adding BN, OPE and OPP, the structure of the film became stronger and the permeability to water vapor decreased. Addition of OPE and OPP significantly increased the antioxidant property of the film. In general, it can be said that the antioxidant substances of the onion peel are protected inside the film by preparing a CMC/OPE/OPP/BN film, which, in addition to stabilizing the antioxidants, can play an effective role in the controlled release of these antioxidant substances.

Development of novel carboxymethyl cellulose/gelatin-based edible films with pomegranate peel extract as antibacterial/antioxidant agents for beef preservation

Novel antioxidant and antibacterial composite films were fabricated by incorporating pomegranate peel extract (PPE) into gelatin and carboxymethyl cellulose matrices. Increasing PPE concentration significantly (p < 0.05) altered physical properties and improved UV (decrease in light transmission 87.30 % to 9.89 % at 400 nm) and water resistance, while FTIR and molecular docking results revealed hydrogen bonding between PPE and film matrix. PPE incorporation enhanced antioxidant activity up to 84.15 ± 0.12 % and also restricted gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial growth by 72.4 % and 65.9 % respectively after 24 h, measured by antimicrobial absorption assays. For beef packaging applications at refrigeration temperatures, PPE films were most effective at extending shelf-life up to 3 days, as evidenced by reduced total viable counts, total volatile basic nitrogen, weight loss, and pH changes compared to control films. Therefore, these antioxidant and antibacterial films have potential applications in food packaging to protect against mechanical stress, light exposure, microbial spoilage, and oxidative free radicals.

Antimicrobial, anticancer activities, molecular docking, and DFT/B3LYP/LANL2DZ analysis of heterocyclic cellulose derivative and their Cu-complexes

In this study, novel Cu-complexes of heterocyclic cellulose which were synthesized via the reaction of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) from bagasse pulp with NH2NH2 to give hydrazide cellulose which easily reacted with CS2 to form salt and then cyclized in the presence of HCl to afford cellulose oxadiazole, or with hydrazine hydrate to give cellulose triazole. Furthermore, the cellulose oxadiazole and triazole moieties acting as chelating agents with metal ion Cu (II), and all synthesized compounds were examined for their spectral analysis to show the adsorption of Cu (II) on the surface of cellulose through intramolecular hydrogen bonding. Results illustrated that cellulose oxadiazole and Cu- cellulose oxadiazole exhibited antimicrobial activities more than triazole and Cu- cellulose triazole. Furthermore, anticancer results showed that both cellulose oxadiazole and triazole exhibited activity higher than Cu-cellulose oxadiazole and Cu-cellulose triazole, where the cellulose triazole showed the highest activity (IC50 = 58.7 μg/μL). Additionally, the docking simulation of the synthesized cellulose complexes with different proteins such as PDBID:3t88, PDBID:4ynt, PDBID:1tgh, PDBID:2wje, and PDBID:4hdq and shortage bond length to confirm the experimental results. Optimization of metal complexes utilized the DFT/B3LYP/LANL2DZ basis set to confirm the stability of these metals theoretically and their physical descriptors and FMO analysis.

A new polyazomethine-based pyrazole moiety and its reinforced nanocomposites @ ZnO for antimicrobial applications

A new class of biologically active polyazomethine/pyrazole and their related nanocomposites, polyazomethine/pyrazole/zinc oxide nanoparticles, have been successfully synthesized through the polycondensation technique in the form of polyazomethine pyrazole (PAZm/Py4-6) and polyazomethine/pyrazole/zinc oxide nanoparticles (PAZm/Py/ZnOa-c). The polymeric nanocomposites were prepared with a 5% loading of zinc oxide nanofiller using the same preparation technique, in addition to the help of ultrasonic radiation. The characteristics of the new polymers, such as solubility, viscometry, and molecular weight, were examined. All the polymers were completely soluble in the following solvents: concentrated sulfuric acid, formic acid, dimethylformamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, and tetrahydrofuran. Furthermore, the weight loss of the polyazomethine pyrazole (4, 5, and 6) at 800 °C was 67%, 95%, and 86%, respectively, which indicates the thermal stability of these polymers. At 800 °C, the polyazomethine/pyrazole/zinc oxide nanoparticles (a, b, and c) lost 74%, 68%, and 75% of their weight, respectively. This shows that adding zinc oxide nanoparticles made these compounds more stable at high temperatures. The X-Ray diffraction pattern of the polyazomethine pyrazole (PAZm/Py4-6) shows a number of sharp peaks with varying intensities. The polymers that were studied had straight crystal structures. Furthermore, the measurements of polyazomethine/pyrazole/zinc oxide nanoparticles (PAZm/Py/ZnOa-c) indicate a good merging of zinc oxide nanoparticles into the matrix of polymers. The antimicrobial activity of polymers and polymer nanocomposites was tested against some selected bacteria and fungi. The synthesized polymer (c) shows the highest activity against the two types of gram-negative bacteria selected. Most tested compounds were found to be effective against gram-positive bacteria except polyazomethine pyrazole (PAZm/Py5) and polyazomethine pyrazole (PAZm/Py6), which do not exhibit any activity. The synthesized polymers and their related nanocomposites were tested for their ability to kill the chosen fungi. All of them were effective against Aspergillus flavus, but only polyazomethine pyrazole (PAZm/Py4) and polyazomethine/pyrazole/zinc oxide (PAZm/Py/ZnOc) were effective against Candida albicans.

Influence of Curcuma Longa extract in citral addition on functional properties of thin films with triple-layer structure based on furcellaran and gelatin

In this study, we obtained triple-layer films based on furcellaran and gelatin, in which the middle layer was enriched with extract of Curcuma longa in citral. This newly developed material underwent a comprehensive characterisation process to identify significant improvements in its functional properties. Both SEM, XRD and FTIR analyzes indicated the formation of interactions not only between the components but also between the film layers. Notably, the incorporation of the natural extract led to a significant reduction in solubility, decreasing it from 74.79 % to 57.25 %, while enhancing thermal stability expressed as a melting point elevating it from 147.10 °C in the control film to 158.80 °C in the film with the highest concentration of the active ingredient. Simultaneously, the addition of this active ingredient resulted in decreased water contact angle (WCA) values, rendering the film more hydrophilic. The produced films exhibit great promise as packaging materials, particularly within the food industry, and the conducted research is marked by its forward-looking and developmental approach.

Chitosan as a Bio-Based Ligand for the Production of Hydrogenation Catalysts

Bio-based polymers are attracting increasing interest as alternatives to harmful and environmentally concerning non-biodegradable fossil-based products. In particular, bio-based polymers may be employed as ligands for the preparation of metal nanoparticles (M(0)NPs). In this study, chitosan (CS) was used for the stabilization of Ru(0) and Rh(0) metal nanoparticles (MNPs), prepared by simply mixing RhCl3 × 3H2O or RuCl3 with an aqueous solution of CS, followed by NaBH4 reduction. The formation of M(0)NPs-CS was confirmed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Analysis (EDX), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Their size was estimated to be below 40 nm for Rh(0)-CS and 10nm for Ru(0)-CS by SEM analysis. M(0)NPs-CS were employed for the hydrogenation of (E)-cinnamic aldehyde and levulinic acid. Easy recovery by liquid-liquid extraction made it possible to separate the catalyst from the reaction products. Recycling experiments demonstrated that M(0)NPs-CS were highly efficient up to four times in the best hydrogenation conditions. The data found in this study show that CS is an excellent ligand for the stabilization of Rh(0) and Ru(0) nanoparticles, allowing the production of some of the most efficient, selective and recyclable hydrogenation catalysts known in the literature.

Biodegradable PBAT/PLA blend films incorporated with turmeric and cinnamomum powder: A potential alternative for active food packaging

Active packaging made from biodegradable polymers and natural additives appears as an ecological alternative. In addition to having antioxidant activity and enhancing food preservation, it allows mitigating the negative impacts caused by improper disposal. This study pursued to produce biodegradable films based on a polymer blend PBAT/PLA (Ecovio®) using the flat extrusion method. The films were prepared with the incorporation of 5 wt% of powdered turmeric or cinnamon as natural additives. The films obtained, and those reprocessed twice, were characterized in terms of colorimetric, UV light transmittance, water contact angle, water vapor permeability, morphology, mechanical properties, and antioxidant activity. Cinnamon reduced the UV light transmittance and made a surface more hydrophobic. Reprocessing led to greater elongation and maximum load, associated with increased dispersion and distribution, as evidenced in the morphological analysis. The films developed have significant potential for applications in active food packaging, with emphasis on cinnamon-additivated films.

Green Strong Cornstalk Rind-Based Cellulose-PVA Aerogel for Oil Adsorption and Thermal Insulation

Cellulose-based aerogel has attracted considerable attention for its excellent adsorption capacity, biodegradability, and renewability. However, it is considered eco-unfriendly due to defibrillation of agriculture waste and requires harmful/expensive chemical agents. In this study, cornstalk rind-based aerogel was obtained via the following steps: green H2O2/HAc delignification of cornstalk rind to obtain cellulose fibers, binding with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and freeze-drying treatment, and hydrophobic modification with stearic acid. The obtained aerogel showed high compressive strength (200 KPa), which is apparently higher (about 32 kPa) than NaClO-delignified cornstalk-based cellulose/PVA aerogel. Characterization of the obtained aerogel through SEM, water contact angle, etc., showed high porosity (95%), low density (0.0198 g/cm-3), and hydrophobicity (water contact angle, 159°), resulting in excellent n-hexane adsorption capacity (35 g/g), higher (about 29.5 g/g) than NaClO-delignified cornstalk-based cellulose/PVA aerogel. The adsorbed oil was recovered by the extrusion method, and the aerogel showed excellent recyclability in oil adsorption.

Apple pectin-based active films to preserve oil: Effects of naturally branched phytoglycogen-curcumin host

Pectin has excellent film-forming properties, but its functional properties need to be enhanced. Therefore, we constructed naturally branched phytoglycogen (PG) nanoparticles to solubilize curcumin (CCM) and further enhance the properties of apple pectin-based active films. The size of the PG spherical particles ranged from 30 to 100 nm with some aggregates. The branch density of the PG was 6.02 %. These PG nanoparticles increased the solubility of CCM nearly 1742-fold and a nanosized phytoglycogen-curcumin (PG-CCM) host was formed via hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interaction. This host promoted the formation of pectin-based films with a dense structure and increased their tensile strength to 23.51 MPa. The coefficient to water vapor permeability, oxygen permeability and carbon dioxide permeability were all decreased indicating their barrier performance were improved. Among them, the oxygen permeability coefficient decreased most, from 1.14 × 10-7 g·m-1·s-1 to 0.8 × 10-7 g·m-1·s-1. Also, the transmittance of the active film at 280 nm and 660 nm decreased to 0.65 % and 72.10 %. Antioxidant and antibacterial properties were significantly enhanced (P < 0.05). And the results showed this film was an excellent oil packaging material. The active film incorporating PG-CCM host can replace heat-sealed plastic bags/pouch made from polyethylene and polypropylene synthetic plastics, and solve the problem that plastic packaging is difficult to degrade and cannot be squeezed clean. This provides a new conceptual framework for developing pectin-based active films by incorporating of PG and CCM.

An Anthocyanin-Based Eco-Friendly Triboelectric Nanogenerator for pH Monitoring and Energy Harvesting

In recent years, renewable and sustainable triboelectric nanogenerators have attracted attention due to their high energy conversion rate, and enhancing their functionality further contributes to their applicability across various fields. A pH-sensitive triboelectric nanogenerator (pH-TENG) has been prepared by electrostatic spinning technology, with anthocyanin as the pH indicator and environmentally friendly polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the substrate. Among many friction-negative materials, the pH-TENG exhibits the best combination with fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) and yields an open-circuit voltage of 62 V, a short-circuit current of 370 nA, and a transferred charge of 21.8 nC. At a frequency of 3 Hz, it can charge a 4.7 μF capacitor to 2 V within 45 s, effectively powering a thermometer. Furthermore, the presence of anthocyanin does not affect the pH-TENG's power generation performance and enables the monitoring of a wide range of environmental pH changes, with an ΔE change of 28.8 ± 7.6. Therefore, pH-TENG prepared with environmentally friendly materials can bring new available materials to the biological and medical fields.

Development of carboxymethyl cellulose-based nanocomposite incorporated with ZnO nanoparticles synthesized by cress seed mucilage as green surfactant

This study aimed to enhance carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)-based films by incorporating zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and cress seed mucilage (CSM), with a view to augmenting the physical, mechanical, and permeability properties of the resulting nanocomposite films. For the first time, CSM was exploited as a green surfactant to synthetize ZnO NPs using hydrothermal method. Seven distinct film samples were meticulously produced and subjected to a comprehensive array of analyses. The findings revealed that the incorporation of CSM/ZnO-5 % improved the physical properties of the films, demonstrating a significant reduction in moisture content and water vapor permeability (WVP). Increasing the concentration of NPs in conjunction with CSM markedly decreased the solubility of the nanocomposites by up to 56 %. The films containing CSM/ZnO showed higher tensile strength and elongation at the break values. The UV absorption of the films exhibited a substantial rise with the addition of ZnO NPs, particularly with an increased content in the presence of CSM. The thermal stability of nanocomposites containing a high concentration of CSM/ZnO exhibited an improvement compared to the control sample. In light of these results, the CMC/CSM/ZnO-5 % film emerges as a promising candidate for a biocompatible packaging material, exhibiting favorable physical characteristics.

Sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol nanofibers loaded with Shikonin for diabetic wound healing: In vivo and in vitro evaluation

Diabetic wounds are typically chronic wounds and the healing process is limited by problems such as high blood glucose levels, bacterial infections, and other issues that make wound healing difficult. Designing drug-loaded wound dressings is an effective way to promote diabetic wound healing. In this study, we developed an SA/PVA nanofiber (SPS) containing Shikonin (SK) for the treatment of diabetic wounds. The prepared nanofibers were uniform in diameter, had good hydrophilicity and high water vapor permeability, and effectively promoted gas exchange between the wound site and the outside world. The results of in vitro experiments showed that SPS was effective in antimicrobial, antioxidant, and biocompatible. In vivo tests showed that the wound healing rate of mice treated with SPS reached 85.5 %. Immunohistochemical staining results showed that SPS was involved in the diabetic wound healing process through the up-regulation of growth factors (CD31, HIF-1α) and the down-regulation of inflammatory factors (CD68). Western blotting experiments showed that SPS attenuated the inflammation through the inhibition of the IκBα/NF-κB signaling pathway. These results suggest that SPS is a promising candidate for future clinical application of chronic wound dressings.

Pressurized liquid extraction of bioactive compounds from grape peel and application in pH-sensing carboxymethyl cellulose films: A promising material to monitor the freshness of pork and milk

This study produced pH-sensing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films functionalized with bioactive compounds obtained by pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) of grape peel to monitor the freshness of pork and milk. A semi-continuous PLE was conducted using hydroethanolic solution (70:30, v/v) at a flow rate of 5 mL/min, 15 MPa, and 60 °C. The films were produced by the casting technique using CMC (2.5 %, w/v), glycerol (1 %, v/v), and functionalized with 10, 30, and 50 % (v/v) grape peel extract. From the results obtained, LC-MS/MS revealed that PLE extracted twenty-seven phenolic compounds. The main phenolic compounds were kaempferol-3-glucoside (367.23 ± 25.88 µg/mL), prunin (270.23 ± 3.62 µg/mL), p-coumaric acid (236.43 ± 26.02 µg/mL), and procyanidin B1 (117.17 ± 7.29 µg/mL). The CMC films presented suitable color and mechanical properties for food packaging applications. The addition of grape peel extract promoted the pH-sensing property, showing the sensitivity of anthocyanins to pH changes. The films functionalized with grape peel extract presented good release control of bioactive compounds, making them suitable for food packaging applications. When applied to monitor the freshness of pork and milk, the films exhibited remarkable color changes associated with the pH of the food during storage. In conclusion, PLE is a sustainable approach to obtaining bioactive compounds from the grape peel, which can be applied in the formulation of pH-sensing films as a promising sustainable material to monitor food freshness during storage.

Biodegradable bio-film based on Cordyceps militaris and metal-organic frameworks for fruit preservation

In this study, Cordyceps militaris matrix was employed for the first time to fabricate a biodegradable food packaging. Carmine and Ag@CuBTC were introduced to cross-link with mycelium and were uniformly dispersed within the matrix to enhance the water resistance, antimicrobial, and antioxidant properties of the bio-films. The bio-film displayed high biodegradability, with nearly 100 % degradation achieved after three weeks. The bio-film exhibited exceptional resistance to oxidation (49.30 % DPPH and 93.94 % ABTS•+), as well as effective inhibitory capabilities against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The composite film maintained a high CO2/O2 selective permeability, which was advantageous for mitigating fruit metabolism and extending shelf life. Simultaneously, food preservation experiments confirmed that these bio-films can decelerate the spoilage of fruits and effectively prolong the shelf-life of food. The experimental findings indicated that the prepared Bio-R-Ag@Cu film held promise as an environmentally friendly biodegradable material for food packaging.

Carboxymethylcellulose hydrogels with stable carbon quantum dots: Enabling dynamic fluorescence modulation, automatic erasure, and secure information encryption

Inspired by "disappear after reading", a time-modulated encryption hydrogel was synthesized by carboxymethyl cellulose with carbon quantum dots. Carboxymethyl cellulose in this system stabilized carbon quantum dots, which ensured the whole hydrogel worked well. The encryption/decryption of information depended on pH adjustment, application of EDTA and Cr (VI). Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of the fluorescence change mechanism uncovered that fluorescence quenching was potentially influenced by internal filtering effects and static quenching, which involved the amino, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups present within the hydrogel.

Gelatin/carboxymethylcellulose composite film combined with photodynamic antibacterial: New prospect for fruit preservation

Plastic packaging causes environmental pollution, and the development of simple and effective biodegradable active packaging remains a challenge. In this study, gelatin (G) and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were used as film materials, with the addition of curcumin (Cur), a photosensitive substance, to investigate the changes in the physical and chemical properties of the film and its application in fruit preservation. The results demonstrated that Cur was compatible with the film. With the addition of Cur, the thickness of the film increased up to 1.3 times, while the moisture content was reduced to 12.10 %. The tensile strength (TS) and elongation at break (EAB) of the film can reach 8.84 MPa and 19.33 %, respectively. The photodynamic antibacterial experiment revealed that the film containing 0.5 % Cur exhibited the highest antibacterial rate, reaching 99.99 % against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and 95 % against Escherichia coli (E. coli). During storage, the grapes remained unspoiled for up to 9 days after being phototreated with the film and the microbial content of the skin was much lower than that of the control group. In addition, Cur provided antioxidant activity for the film, with a scavenging activity of 39.54 % against the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrind radical (DPPH). Bananas exposed to the film-forming solution for a short period of time remained fresh for up to 6 days. During preservation, the weight of the treated bananas decreased more slowly than that of the control group. In addition, the activity of SOD on the 7th day was approximately 20 U/g higher than that of the control group, which helped to reduce oxidative stress during banana preservation. In summary, G-CMC/Cur film is an optional fruit-cling film that can be used in food packaging.

Modified polysaccharides for food packaging applications: A review

Development of new food packaging materials is crucial to reduce the use of single-use plastics and to limit their destructive impact on the environment. Polysaccharides provide an alternative solution to this problem. This paper summarizes and discusses recent research results on the potential of modifying polysaccharides as materials for film and coating applications. Modifications of polysaccharides significantly affect their properties, as well as their application usability. Although modifications of biopolymers for packaging applications have been widely studied, polysaccharides have attracted little attention despite being a prospective, environmentally friendly, and economically viable packaging alternative. Therefore, this paper discusses approaches to the development of biodegradable, polysaccharide-based food packaging materials and focuses on modifications of four polysaccharides, such as starch, chitosan, sodium alginate and cellulose. In addition, these modifications are presented not only in terms of the selected polysaccharide, but also in terms of specific properties, i.e. hydrophilic, barrier and mechanical properties, of polysaccharides. Such a presentation of results makes it much easier to select the modification method to improve the unsatisfactory properties of the material. Moreover, very often it happens that the applied modification improves one and worsens another property, which is also presented in this review.

Smart colorimetric sensing films based on carboxymethyl cellulose incorporated with a natural pH indicator

This study aimed to combine various natural pH indicators of anthocyanin from Karanda (CA) with anthocyanin from butterfly pea flower (BA) or curcumin (CC) to improve the sensitivity of CA. CA75/BA25 and CA25/CC75 enhanced the sensitivity of the endpoint colour change of CA. A smart colorimetric sensing film was also developed and characterised by loading different natural pH indicators on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) films. The addition of different natural pH indicators increased the thickness, elongation, colour (a* and b* values), and contact angle of CMC films (p < 0.05). However, the tensile strength, water vapour permeability, film solubility, light transmission, and L* value decreased when different natural pH indicators were added (p < 0.05). The indicator films demonstrated enhanced antioxidant capacity and thermal stability. The FTIR spectra showed that natural pH indicators were successfully immobilised into the CMC films. Notably, the CMC/CA75/BA25 film was the most sensitive film to changes in volatile ammonia and different pH buffer solutions. The CMC/CA75/BA25 film changed from purple to green with exposure to ammonia solution and from pink to purple to blue to green with increasing pH. Therefore, the CMC/CA75/BA25 film has potential as a colorimetric sensing film, providing a more accurate assessment result.

Biodegradable cellulose/curcumin films with Janus structure for food packaging and freshness monitoring

The development of renewable, hydrophobic, and biodegradable intelligent packaging materials as an alternative to petroleum-based plastic products has become a new research focus in recent years, but remains a challenge. Herein, regenerated cellulose/curcumin composite films were fabricated by dispersing hydrophobic curcumin uniformly in a hydrophilic cellulose matrix using an aqueous alkali/urea solvent based on the pH-driven principle of curcumin. In addition, a unilateral hydrophobic modification was carried out using chemical vapor deposition of methyltrichlorosilane to obtain Janus structure. The composite films exhibited high transparency in the visible light spectrum, excellent antioxidation, thermal stability, mechanical strength, gas barrier properties, and antibacterial activity. Furthermore, the films demonstrated the capability to lower the overall levels of volatile basic nitrogen in stored fish. The color of the films shifted from a pale yellow to a reddish-brown over time during storage. The composite films can be completely degraded after approximately 98 days in soil with an average environmental temperature of 29 °C. This work provided a facile strategy to prepare biodegradable cellulose/curcumin films with Janus structure as packaging materials which could preserve the freshness of food products while offering visual monitor of their freshness in real-time.

Polycaprolactone/cress seed mucilage based bilayer antibacterial films containing ZnO nanoparticles with superabsorbent property for the treatment of exuding wounds

In this research, a novel double-layer film based on polycaprolactone and cress seed mucilage containing zinc oxide nanoparticles (0.5-2 %) was synthesized using solution casting technique, as an interactive multi-functional wound dressing. The bilayer films were characterized by measuring moisture content, contact angle parameter, porosity, water vapor transmission rate (WVTR), color attributes and opacity, swelling, degradation, mechanical properties, cell viability, and antimicrobial activity, as well as using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that the film containing 1.5 % zinc oxide nanoparticles had the best performance, with high swelling ability (3600 %) and 25 % degradation within 24 h of placement in a wound simulator solution. Its mechanical properties, including tensile strength and elongation at break, were 9 MPa and 5.53 %, respectively. In investigating the antimicrobial activity of the optimal film against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, the diameter of the inhibition zone was observed to be 39.33 and 42 mm, respectively. Moreover, increasing the number of ZnO-NPs hindered the growth of NIH/3T3 cells, but the 1.5 % ZnO-NP loaded film showed a high percentage of cell viability in 1 day (90 %) and 3 days (93 %), which is suitable for biomedical applications.

Recent advances in the antioxidant activity of metal-curcumin complexes: a combined computational and experimental review

Curcumin, an extensively studied phytochemical compound, has gained attention for its potential therapeutic applications across a spectrum of diseases. Its notable attributes include its relatively high tolerability within the human body and its perceived absence of adverse side effects. This review article presents a comprehensive overview of the antioxidant effects exhibited by complexes formed by curcumin and curcumin derived ligands with metals like Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn, Ga and In, which leads to toxic effects beyond a certain limit, based on both experimental and theoretical findings. Additionally, the discussion delves into metal-curcumin complexes characterized by stoichiometries of 1:1 and 1:2, exploring their geometric arrangements and corresponding antioxidant activity, as highlighted in recent studies. These complexes hold the promise of improving curcumin's solubility, stability, and bioavailability, potentially augmenting its overall therapeutic potential and expanding its scope for medical applications.

Emulsion template fabricated gelatin-based scaffold functionalized by dialdehyde starch complex with antibacterial antioxidant properties for accelerated wound healing

Gelatin and starch are considered as promising sustainable materials for their abundant production and good biodegradability. Efforts have been made to explore their medical application. Herein, scaffolds based on gelatin and starch with a preferred microstructure and antibacterial antioxidant property were fabricated by the emulsion template method. The dialdehyde starch was firstly combined with silver nanoparticles and curcumin to carry out the efficient hybrid antibacterial agent. Then, the gelatin microsphere of appropriate size was prepared by emulsification and gathered by the above agent to obtain gelatin-based scaffolds. The prepared scaffolds showed porous microstructures with high porosity of over 74 % and the preferred pore sizes of ∼65 μm, which is conducive to skin regeneration. Moreover, the scaffolds possessed a good swelling ability of over 640 %, good degradability of over 18 days, excellent blood compatibility, and cell compatibility. The promising antibacterial and antioxidant properties came from the hybrid antibacterial agent were affirmed. As expected, the gelatin-based scaffolds fabricated by the emulsion template method with a preferred microstructure can facilitate more adhered fibroblasts. In summary, gelatin-based scaffolds functionalized by starch-based complex expanded the application of abundant sustainable materials in the biomedical field, especially as antibacterial antioxidant wound dressings.

Construction of carboxymethyl chitosan/PVA/chitin nanowhiskers multicomponent film activated with Cotylelobium lanceolatum phenolics and in situ SeNP for enhanced packaging application

This work focused on the construction of bioactive packaging films based on carboxymethyl chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) (CMP) as polymeric matrix and fortified with chitin nanowhiskers, Cotylelobium lanceolatum phenolic extract (CL) and in situ synthesized nano selenium. Extensive morphological, microstructural, physical and mechanical analysis revealed that the nanofillers were well-dispersed and integrated into CMP matrix. Incorporation of the extract and nano selenium produced excellent UV blocking properties without seriously compromising the transparency of the composite (CMP/CNW/CLNS1) film. Moreover, blending of CMP with the filler materials significantly elevated (p < 0.05) the surface hydrophobicity (WCA by 35.4°), water barrier (by 53.86 %), tensile strength (from 29.35 to 33.09 MPa), elongation at break (from 64.28 to 96.48 %), and thermal properties of the resultant CMP/CNW/CLNS1 film, with concomitant reduction in water solubility and swellability. Furthermore, the CMP/CNW/CLNS films exhibited remarkable improvement in antioxidant properties. When used for packaging of peeled fresh garlic cloves, the CMP/CNW/CLNS1 film pouch, not the plain CMP or CMP/CNW film pouches, inhibited weight loss, oxidative browning, and the emergence of black mold on the packaged cloves. The developed CMP/CNW/CLNS1 film demonstrated enhanced capacity to safeguard the quality of packaged food and improved shelf life. Therefore, the present study suggests that incorporation of CNW/CLNS into carboxymethyl chitosan/PVA films is a suitable and facile strategy for the fabrication of films with improved mechanical, physico-chemical and functional properties with great potential for application as a sustainable active packaging material in the food industry.

Synthesis, optimization via response surface methodology, and structural properties of carboxymethylcellulose/curcumin/graphene oxide biocomposite films/coatings for the shelf-life extension of shrimp

In this study, carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), curcumin (Cur), and graphene oxide (GO) were used to prepare a novel biocomposite film (CMC-Cur-GO). A central composite design under response surface methodology was employed to optimize the films in terms of water vapor permeability (WVP) and swelling percentage (SP). Under the optimum conditions, which the rates of CMC, GO and curcumin were found to be 1350 mg, 29.99 mg, and 0.302 g, respectively, WVP and SP of CMC-Cur-GO were obtained 0.902 × 10-8 (g/m·h·Pa) and 13.62 %, respectively. The biocomposite films (CMC, CMC-Cur, CMC-GO and CMC-Cur-GO) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscope, thermal gravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, ultraviolet-vis light transmittance, moisture content, and mechanical properties. Compared with pure CMC film, the tensile strength, elongation at break and Young's modulus of CMC-Cur-GO were significantly improved by up to 75 %, 41 % and 23 %, respectively (p < 0.05). Then, CMC-Cur-GO was applied as a coating solution for the shrimps. The coated shrimps with the CMC-Cur-GO significantly (p < 0.05) showed a noteworthy improvement in microbial quality (total and psychrotrophic bacterial count), chemical deterioration and lipid oxidation (pH and total volatile basic nitrogen, peroxide value and thiobarbituric acid) and physical characteristic (weight loss) as compared to other samples. The CMC-Cur-GO coating could increase the shelf life of shrimp under refrigerated storage.

Robust and versatile superhydrophobic cellulose-based composite film with superior UV shielding and heat-barrier performances for sustainable packaging

Replacing single-use plastic delivery bags (SPDBs) with cellulose-based materials is an effective strategy to reduce environmental pollution. However, the inherent hydrophilicity and ultralow mechanical strength of cellulose materials limit its development. In this study, zinc oxide (ZnO)-cellulose composite films were successfully prepared through "two-step strategy" of lotus leaves structure simulation, including deposition of micro-nano ZnO particles and stearic acid (STA) modification. Well-dispersed micro-nano ZnO particles with stick-like structure were anchored in the ZnO-cellulose composite film prepared at 90 °C (CF-90). Due to the special structural design and strong interaction between the cellulose and micro-nano ZnO particles, the CF-90 showed higher mechanical property (a 47.8 % improvement in the tensile strength). Impressively, CF-90 also exhibited great UV shielding properties with larger UPF value of 1603.98 and superhigh heat-barrier performance. Moreover, CF-90 obtained excellent superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 163.6° by further modification. Consequently, the versatile cellulose-based material bringing a dawn on application of sustainable packaging materials for express delivery industry.

Development of curcumin-containing polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan active/intelligent films for preservation and monitoring of Schizothorax prenanti fillets freshness

Active/intelligent films for the preservation and monitoring of Schizothorax prenanti fillets freshness were prepared by combining curcumin (CUR) with polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan (PVA/CS) matrix. SEM images showed that the CUR with a maximum content of 1.5 % (w/w) was evenly distributed in the composite matrix. The addition of CUR did not affect the chemical structure of PVA/CS matrix, as confirmed by FTIR investigation. When 1.5 % (w/w) CUR was added, the water vapor barrier property, tensile strength and antioxidant activity of the composite film were the best, which were 5.38 ± 0.25 × 10-11 g/m·s·Pa, 62.05 ± 1.68 MPa and 85.50 ± 3.63 %, respectively. Water solubility of PVA/CS/CUR-1.5 % film was reduced by approximately 27 % compared to PVA/CS film. After adding CUR, the antibacterial properties of the composite film increased significantly. Although the addition of CUR reduced the biodegradability of PVA/CS film, the PVA/CS/CUR-1.5 % film degraded >60 % within 5 weeks. By measuring pH, weight loss, total volatile base‑nitrogen (TVB-N), thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and total viable counts (TVC), the preservation effect of the composite films on the fish freshness was evaluated. The fish shelf life treated by PVA/CS/CUR-1.5 % film expanded from 3-6 days to 12-15 days at 4 °C. In addition, when PVA/CS/CUR-1.5 % film was used to monitor the fish freshness, it exhibited clear color fluctuations, from yellow to orange and to red, corresponding to first-grade freshness, second-grade freshness, and rottenness of the fish, respectively. As a result, the films can be successfully used for Schizothorax prenanti fillets preservation and deterioration monitoring.

Furoic acid-mediated konjac glucomannan/flaxseed gum based green biodegradable antibacterial film for Shine-Muscat grape preservation

Considering the growing threats to the environment and human health, such as plastic pollution and food spoilage, the development of naturally antibacterial food packaging materials with biodegradable capabilities has recently attracted considerable attention. This work applies the concept of green environmental protection to packaging technology, and a new type of green edible antibacterial packaging film was developed. The basic idea is to incorporate furoic acid (FA), which possesses excellent antibacterial activity, into the flaxseed gum and konjac glucomannan matrix (FK) as a filler to obtain a series of FK-FA bioactive films. This incorporation simultaneously improves the hydrophobicity and UV-barrier ability by 12.28 % and 42.87 %, respectively. Meanwhile, the diameters of the antibacterial zone of the FK-FA0.4% films (composite FK films containing 0.4 % FA) against E. coli and S. aureus increased to 38.98 mm and 36.29 mm from 24.00 mm of pure FK film, respectively. As a consequence, the grape sample sealed with FK-FA0.4% film remained edible on the 18th day of storage, while those packaged with commercial PE film and pure FK were seriously rotted and lost edible value on the 12th day, further confirming the enhanced preservation capacity. Finally, the as-prepared films were established to be biodegradable and were almost completely degraded within 25 days under simulated environmental conditions. Overall, these promising results show the potential of FK-FA films for replacing plastic packaging materials as eco-friendly edible films with prolonged shelf life for active packaging.

Physicochemical, thermal, pasting, morphological, functional and bioactive binding characteristics of starches of different oat varieties of North-Western Himalayas

Starches were isolated from five oat varieties (SFO-1, SFO-3, Sabzar, SKO-20 and SKO-96) grown in North-Western Himalayas of India. Moisture content of the varieties ranged from 9.25 ± 0.09 to 13.21 ± 0.11 %, indicating their shelf-stability. Results suggested >90 % purity of starches as was evident from values of ash, proteins, and lipids. Amylose content results showed that all starches fall within category of intermediate-amylose starches. Lambdamax, blue value and OD620/550 were found significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher in SKO-20. Sabzar exhibited higher starch hydrolysis percentage of 85.16 % whereas, lowest was observed in SKO-20 (78.12 %). Degree of syneresis was higher in SKO-20 however, its freeze-thaw stability was lesser. Wide peak in FTIR spectra at 3320 cm-1 confirms nature of starches. SKO-20 exhibited significantly higher onset gelatinization temperature (65.19 ± 1.06 °C) and enthalpy (15.78 ± 0.15 J/g) whereas, Sabzar exhibited lowest enthalpy. Pasting characteristics indicated lowest and highest final viscosity in SKO-20 (341.30 ± 2.11 mPas) and SKO-96 (1470 ± 4.56 mPas), respectively. SEM results indicated irregular and polygonal shape of starches with size <10 μm. SKO-20 exhibited lowest disintegration time of 2.08 ± 0.01 min and Sabzar showed highest (3.31 ± 0.07 min). SKO-20 released more curcumin (71.28 %) whereas, Sabzar released less. This suggests that SKO-20 could be used as better excipient for delivery of curcumin at target site.

Preparation and characterization of carboxymethylated Aureobasidium pullulans β-(1 → 3, 1 → 6)-glucan and its in vitro antioxidant activity

Aureobasidium pullulans β-(1 → 3, 1 → 6)-glucan (APG) has a high degree of β-(1 → 6)-glucosyl branching and a regular triple helical structure similar to that of schizophyllan. In this study, APG was carboxymethylated to different degrees of substitution (DS = 0.51, 1.0, and 2.0, denoted CMAPG 1-3, respectively) using a heterogeneous reaction. With increasing DS, the triple-helix structure drastically decreased and converted to a random coil structure in CMAPG 3. Further, aqueous solutions of CMAPG changed from pseudoplastic fluids to perfect Newtonian liquids with increasing DS, indicating that the intra- and intermolecular hydrogen bonds had been cleaved by the substituents to form a random coil structure. In addition, APG and CMAPG solutions exhibited scavenging ability against hydroxyl, organic, and sulfate radicals. It was also found that the carboxymethylation of APG drastically enhanced the organic radical scavenging ability. On the basis of the relationship between the DS and radical scavenging ability of the CMAPG samples, we believe hydroxyl and organic radicals were preferably scavenged by the donation of hydrogen atoms from the glucose rings and the methylene moieties of the carboxymethyl groups, respectively. Considering the obtained results, CMAPG and APG are expected to have applications in pharmaceuticals, functional foods, and cosmetics as antioxidant polysaccharides.

In silico design and mechanistic study of niosome-encapsulated curcumin against multidrug-resistant Staphylococcus aureus biofilms

Curcumin, an important natural component of turmeric, has been known for a long time for its antimicrobial properties. This study aimed to investigate the anti-biofilm action of the niosome-encapsulated curcumin and explore the involved anti-biofilm mechanism. In silico investigations of ADME-Tox (absorption, distribution, metabolism, excretion, and toxicity) were first performed to predict the suitability of curcumin for pharmaceutical application. Curcumin showed low toxicity but at the same time, low solubility and low stability, which, in turn, might reduce its antimicrobial activity. To overcome these intrinsic limitations, curcumin was encapsulated using a biocompatible niosome system, and an encapsulation efficiency of 97% was achieved. The synthesized curcumin-containing niosomes had a spherical morphology with an average diameter of 178 nm. The niosomal curcumin was capable of reducing multi-drug resistant (MDR) Staphylococcus aureus biofilm 2-4-fold compared with the free curcumin. The encapsulated curcumin also demonstrated no significant cytotoxicity on the human foreskin fibroblasts. To understand the interaction between curcumin and S. aureus biofilm, several biofilm-related genes were analyzed for their expression. N-acetylglucosaminyl transferase (IcaD), a protein involved in the production of polysaccharide intercellular adhesion and known to play a function in biofilm development, was found to be downregulated by niosomal curcumin and showed high binding affinity (-8.3 kcal/mol) with curcumin based on molecular docking analysis. Our study suggests that the niosome-encapsulated curcumin is a promising approach for the treatment of MDR S. aureus biofilm and can be extended to biofilms caused by other pathogens.

Recent Advances in Functional Cellulose-based Films with Antimicrobial and Antioxidant Properties for Food Packaging

The packaging of food plays a crucial role in food preservation worldwide. However, traditional packaging systems are passive layers with weak efficiency in protecting the food quality. Therefore, packaged foods are gradually spoiled due to the oxidation and growth of microorganisms. Additionally, most of the commercial packaging films are made of petroleum-based materials which raise environmental concerns. Accordingly, the development of eco-friendly natural-derived active packaging systems has increased the attention of scientists. Cellulose as the most abundant polysaccharide on earth with high biocompatibility, no toxicity, and high biodegradability has extensively been applied for the fabrication of packaging films. However, neat cellulose-based films lack antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Therefore, neat cellulose-based films are passive films with weak food preservation performance. Active films have been developed by incorporating antioxidants and antimicrobial agents into the films. In this review, we have explored the latest research on the fabrication of antimicrobial/antioxidant cellulose-based active packaging films by incorporating natural extracts, natural polyphenols, nanoparticles, and microparticles into the cellulose-based film formulations. We categorized these types of packaging films into two main groups: (i) blend films which are obtained by mixing solutions of cellulose with other soluble antimicrobial/antioxidant agents such as natural extracts and polyphenols; and (ii) composite films which are fabricated by dispersing antimicrobial/antioxidant nano- or microfillers into the cellulose solution. The effect of these additives on the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of the films has been explained. Additionally, the changes in the other properties of the films such as hydrophilicity, water evaporation rate, and mechanical properties have also been briefly addressed.

Switchable adhesive films of pullulan loaded with a deep eutectic solvent-curcumin formulation for the photodynamic treatment of drug-resistant skin infections

Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) is a potent tool to surpass the global rise of antimicrobial resistance; still, the effective topical administration of photosensitizers remains a challenge. Biopolymer-based adhesive films can safely extend the residence time of photosensitizers. However, their wide application is narrowed by their limited water absorption capacity and gel strength. In this study, pullulan-based films with a switchable character (from a solid film to an adhesive hydrogel) were developed. This was accomplished by the incorporation of a betaine-based deep eutectic solvent (DES) containing curcumin (4.4 μg.cm-2) into the pullulan films, which tuned the films' skin moisture absorption ability, and therefore they switch into an adhesive hydrogel capable of delivering the photosensitizer. The obtained transparent films presented higher extensibility (elongation at break up to 338.2%) than the pullulan counterparts (6.08%), when stored at 54% of relative humidity, and the corresponding hydrogels a 4-fold higher adhesiveness than commercial hydrogels. These non-cytotoxic adhesives allowed the inactivation (∼5 log reduction), down to the detection limit of the method, of multiresistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus in ex vivo skin samples. Overall, these materials are promising for aPDT in the treatment of resistant skin infections, while being easily removed from the skin.

Coffee Silverskin Cellulose-Based Composite Film with Natural Pigments for Food Packaging: Physicochemical and Sensory Abilities

To promote a circular economy, the use of agricultural by-products as food packaging material has steadily increased. However, designing food packaging films that meet consumers' preferences and requirements is still a challenge. In this work, cellulose extracted from coffee silverskin (a by-product of coffee roasting) and chitosan were combined with different natural pigments (curcumin, phycocyanin, and lycopene) to generate a variety of composite films with different colors for food packaging. The physicochemical and sensory properties of the films were evaluated. The cellulose/chitosan film showed favorable mechanical properties and water sensitivity. Addition of natural pigments resulted in different film colors, and significantly affected the optical properties and improved the UV-barrier, swelling degree, and water vapor permeability (WVP), but there were also slight decreases in the mechanical properties. The various colored films can influence the perceived features and evoke different emotions from consumers, resulting in films receiving different attraction and liking scores. This work provides a comprehensive evaluation strategy for coffee silverskin cellulose-based composite films with incorporated pigments, and a new perspective on the consideration of the hedonic ratings of consumers regarding bio-based films when designing food packaging.

Metal-Based Nanoparticles in Food Packaging and Coating Technologies: A Review

Food security has continued to be a topic of interest in our world due to the increasing demand for food. Many technologies have been adopted to enhance food supply and narrow the demand gap. Thus, the attempt to use nanotechnology to improve food security and increase supply has emerged due to the severe shortcomings of conventional technologies, which have made them insufficient to cater to the continuous demand for food products. Hence, nanoparticles have been identified to play a major role in areas involving food production, protection, and shelf-life extensions. Specifically, metal-based nanoparticles have been singled out to play an important role in manufacturing materials with outstanding properties, which can help increase the shelf-life of different food materials. The physicochemical and biological properties of metal-based nanoparticles, such as the large surface area and antimicrobial properties, have made them suitable and adequately useful, not just as a regular packaging material but as a functional material upon incorporation into biopolymer matrices. These, amongst many other reasons, have led to their wide synthesis and applications, even though their methods of preparation and risk evaluation remain a topic of concern. This review, therefore, briefly explores the available synthetic methods, physicochemical properties, roles, and biological properties of metal-based nanoparticles for food packaging. Furthermore, the associated limitations, alongside quality and safety considerations, of these materials were summarily explored. Although this area of research continues to garner attention, this review showed that metal-based nanoparticles possess great potential to be a leading material for food packaging if the problem of migration and toxicity can be effectively modulated.

Amikacin-Loaded Chitosan Hydrogel Film Cross-Linked with Folic Acid for Wound Healing Application

PURPOSE

Numerous carbohydrate polymers are frequently used in wound-dressing films because they are highly effective materials for promoting successful wound healing. In this study, we prepared amikacin (AM)-containing hydrogel films through the cross-linking of chitosan (CS) with folic acid along with methacrylic acid (MA), ammonium peroxodisulfate (APS), and methylenebisacrylamide (MBA). In the current studies, an effort has been made to look at the possibilities of these materials in developing new hydrogel film wound dressings meant for a slow release of the antibiotic AM and to enhance the potential for wound healing.

METHODS

Free-radical polymerization was used to generate the hydrogel film, and different concentrations of the CS polymer were used. Measurements were taken of the film thickness, weight fluctuation, folding resistance, moisture content, and moisture uptake. HPLC, FTIR, SEM, DSC, and AFM analyses were some of the different techniques used to confirm that the films were successfully developed.

RESULTS

The AM release profile demonstrated regulated release over a period of 24 h in simulated wound media at pH 5.5 and 7.4, with a low initial burst release. The antibacterial activity against gram-negative bacterial strains exhibited substantial effectiveness, with inhibitory zones measuring approximately 20.5 ± 0.1 mm. Additionally, in vitro cytocompatibility assessments demonstrated remarkable cell viability, surpassing 80%, specifically when evaluated against human skin fibroblast (HFF-1) cells.

CONCLUSIONS

The exciting findings of this study indicate the promising potential for further development and testing of these hydrogel films, offering effective and controlled antibiotic release to enhance the process of wound healing.
