Abstract
Supramolecular hydrogels are typically assembled through weak non-covalent interactions, posing a significant challenge in achieving ultra strength. Developing a higher strength based on molecular/nanoscale engineering concepts is a potential improvement strategy. Herein, a super-tough supramolecular hydrogel is assembled by gradually diffusing lignosulfonate sodium (LS) into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution. Both simulations and analytical results indicate that the assembly and subsequent enhancement of the crosslinked network are primarily attributed to LS-induced formation and gradual densification of strong crystalline domains within the hydrogel. The optimized hydrogel exhibits impressive mechanical properties with tensile strength of ≈20 MPa, Young's modulus of ≈14 MPa, and toughness of ≈50 MJ m⁻3, making it the strongest lignin-PVA/polymer hydrogel known so far. Moreover, LS provides the supramolecular hydrogel with excellent low-temperature stability (<-60 °C), antibacterial, and UV-blocking capability (≈100%). Interestingly, the diffusion ability of LS is demonstrated for self-restructuring damaged supramolecular hydrogel, achieving 3D patterning on hydrogel surfaces, and enhancing the local strength of the freeze-thaw PVA hydrogel. The goal is to foster a versatile hydrogel platform by combining eco-friendly LS with biocompatible PVA, paving the way for innovation and interdisciplinarity in biomedicine, engineering materials, and forestry science.

Abstract
Despite critical advances in regenerative medicine, the generation of definitive, reliable treatments for musculoskeletal diseases remains challenging. Gene therapy based on the delivery of therapeutic genetic sequences has strong value to offer effective, durable options to decisively manage such disorders. Furthermore, scaffold-mediated gene therapy provides powerful alternatives to overcome hurdles associated with classical gene therapy, allowing for the spatiotemporal delivery of candidate genes to sites of injury. Among the many scaffolds for musculoskeletal research, hydrogels raised increasing attention in addition to other potent systems (solid, hybrid scaffolds) due to their versatility and competence as drug and cell carriers in tissue engineering and wound dressing. Attractive functionalities of hydrogels for musculoskeletal therapy include their injectability, stimuli-responsiveness, self-healing, and nanocomposition that may further allow to upgrade of them as "intelligently" efficient and mechanically strong platforms, rather than as just inert vehicles. Such functionalized hydrogels may also be tuned to successfully transfer therapeutic genes in a minimally invasive manner in order to protect their cargos and allow for their long-term effects. In light of such features, this review focuses on functionalized hydrogels and demonstrates their competence for the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders using gene therapy procedures, from gene therapy principles to hydrogel functionalization methods and applications of hydrogel-mediated gene therapy for musculoskeletal disorders, while remaining challenges are being discussed in the perspective of translation in patients. Abstract
Nanocomposite represents the backbone of many industrial fabrication applications and exerts a substantial social impact. Among these composites, metal nanostructures are often employed as the active constituents, thanks to their various chemical and physical properties, which offer the ability to tune the application scenarios in thermal management, energy storage, and biostable materials, respectively. Nanocellulose, as an emerging polymer substrate, possesses unique properties of abundance, mechanical flexibility, environmental friendliness, and biocompatibility. Based on the combination of flexible nanocellulose with specific metal fillers, the essential parameters involving mechanical strength, flexibility, anisotropic thermal resistance, and conductivity can be enhanced. Nowadays, the approach has found extensive applications in thermal management, energy storage, biostable electronic materials, and piezoelectric devices. Therefore, it is essential to thoroughly correlate cellulose nanocomposites' properties with different metallic fillers. This review summarizes the extraction of nanocellulose and preparation of metal modified cellulose nanocomposites, including their wide and particular applications in modern advanced devices. Moreover, we also discuss the challenges in the synthesis, the emerging designs, and unique structures, promising directions for future research. Abstract
Recently, numerous studies have been conducted on renewable polymers derived from different natural sources, exploring their suitability for diverse biomedical applications. Lignin as one of the main components of lignocellulosic has garnered significant attention as a promising alternative to petroleum-based polymers. This interest is primarily due to its cost-effectiveness, biocompatibility, eco-friendly nature, as well as its antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. These characteristics could be more beneficial when incorporating lignin into the formulation of value-added products. Although lignin has a chemical structure that is suitable for various applications, these characteristics require modifications to guarantee that the resultant materials display the desired biological, chemical, and physical properties when applied in the creation of biodegradable hydrogels, particularly for biomedical purposes. This study delineates the recent modification approaches that have been employed in the creation of lignin-based hydrogels. These strategies encompass both chemical and physical interactions with other polymers. Additionally, this review encompasses an examination of the current applications of lignin hydrogels, spanning their use as scaffolds for tissue engineering, carriers for pharmaceuticals, materials for wound dressings and biosensors, and elements in flexible and wearable electronics. Finally, we delve into the challenges and constraints associated with these materials, discuss the necessary steps required to attain the appropriate properties for the development of innovative lignin-based hydrogels, and derive conclusions based on the presented findings.

Abstract
Flexible wearable devices are garnering significant interest, with conductive hydrogels emerging as a particularly notable category. While many of these hydrogels offer impressive conductivity, they often lack the innate ability to adhere autonomously to human skin. The ideal hydrogel should possess both superior adhesion properties and a wide responsive range. This study introduces a novel double-network conductive hydrogel, synthesized from lignosulfonate sodium and ionic liquid using a one-pot method. The gel's mechanical robustness (fracture elongation of ∼3500 % and tensile strength of ∼130 kPa) and exceptional conductivity sensing performance arise from the synergistic effects of electrostatic interactions, dynamic hydrogen bonding, and a three-dimensional network structure. Additionally, the phenolic hydroxyl and sulfonic groups from lignosulfonate sodium imbue the hydrogel with adhesive qualities, allowing it to easily bond with varied material surfaces. This hydrogel excels in human physiological signal detection and wireless monitoring, demonstrating a rapid response time (149 ms) and high sensitivity (a maximum gauge factor of 10.9 for strains between 400 and 600 %). Given these properties, the flexible, self-adhesive, and conductive hydrogel showcases immense promise for future applications in wearable devices and wireless transmission sensing.

Abstract
Strong, conductive, and flexible materials with improving ion accessibility have attracted significant attention in electromagnetic interference (EMI) and foldable wearable electronics. However, it still remains a great challenge to realize high performance at the same time for both properties. Herein, a microscale structural design combined with nanostructures strategy to fabricate TOCNF(F)/Ti3 C2 Tx (M)@AgNW(A) composite films via a facile vacuum filtration process followed by hot pressing (TOCNF = TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils, NW = nanowires) is described. The comparison reveals that different microscale structures can significantly influence the properties of thin films, especially their electrochemical properties. Impressively, the ultrathin MA/F/MA film with enhanced layer in the middle exhibits an excellent tensile strength of 107.9 MPa, an outstanding electrical conductivity of 8.4 × 106 S m-1 , and a high SSE/t of 26 014.52 dB cm2 g-1 . The assembled asymmetric MA/F/MA//TOCNF@CNT (carbon nanotubes) supercapacitor leads to a significantly high areal energy density of 49.08 µWh cm-2 at a power density of 777.26 µW cm-2 . This study proposes an effective strategy to circumvent the trade-off between EMI performance and electrochemical properties, providing an inspiration for the fabrication of multifunctional films for a wide variety of applications in aerospace, national defense, precision instruments, and next-generation electronics.

Abstract
Hydrogels, as biological materials, are widely used in food, tissue engineering, and biomedical applications. Nevertheless, many issues remain in the preparation of hydrogels by physical and chemical methods, such as low bioaffinity, weak mechanical properties, and unstable structures, which also limit their applications in other fields. However, the enzymatic cross-linking method has the advantages of high catalytic efficiency, mild reaction conditions, and the presence of nontoxic substances. In this review, we evaluated the chemical, physical, and biological methods of preparing hydrogels and introduced three common cross-linking enzymes and their principles for preparing hydrogels. This review introduced the applications and properties of hydrogels prepared by the enzymatic method and also provided some suggestions regarding the current situation and future development of hydrogels prepared by enzymatic cross-linking.

Abstract
To address the global phosphorus crisis and solve the problem of eutrophication in water bodies, the recovery of phosphate from wastewater for use as a slow-release fertilizer and to improve the slow-release performance of fertilizers is considered an effective way. In this study, amine-modified lignin (AL) was prepared from industrial alkali lignin (L) for phosphate recovery from water bodies, and then the recovered phosphorus-rich aminated lignin (AL-P) was used as a slow-release N and P fertilizer. Batch adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process was consistent with the Pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir model. In addition, ion competition and actual aqueous adsorption experiments showed that AL had good adsorption selectivity and removal capacity. The adsorption mechanism included electrostatic adsorption, ionic ligand exchange and cross-linked addition reaction. In the aqueous release experiments, the rate of nitrogen release was constant and the release of phosphorus followed a Fickian diffusion mechanism. Soil column leaching experiments showed that the release of N and P from AL-P in soil followed the Fickian diffusion mechanism. Therefore, AL recovery of aqueous phosphate for use as a binary slow-release fertilizer has great potential to improve the environment of water bodies, enhance nutrient utilization and address the global phosphorus crisis.

Abstract
Chitosan and lignin mixed nanoparticles were prepared by layer-by-layer and nanoprecipitation methodologies as responsive platforms for sustainable biosensors. The novel nanoparticles showed effective chemophysical and electrochemical properties dependent on the preparation methodology, molecular weight of chitosan, and type of lignin. HOMO-LUMO energy gap calculations suggested the presence of structure-activity relationships between the electrochemical responsiveness and the order and orientation of lignin aromatic subunits and chitosan chains in the nanodevices.

Abstract
The production and engineering of sustainable materials through green chemistry will have a major role in our mission of transitioning to a more sustainable society. Here, combined catalysis, which is the integration of two or more catalytic cycles or activation modes, provides innovative chemical reactions and material properties efficiently, whereas the single catalytic cycle or activation mode alone fails in promoting a successful reaction. Polyphenolic lignin with its distinctive structural functions acts as an important template to create materials with versatile properties, such as being tough, antimicrobial, self-healing, adhesive, and environmentally adaptable. Sustainable lignin-based materials are generated by merging the catalytic cycle of the quinone-catechol redox reaction with free radical polymerization or oxidative decarboxylation reaction, which explores a wide range of metallic nanoparticles and metal ions as the catalysts. In this review, we present the recent work on engineering lignin-based multifunctional materials devised through combined catalysis. Despite the fruitful employment of this concept to material design and the fact that engineering has provided multifaceted materials able to solve a broad spectrum of challenges, we envision further exploration and expansion of this important concept in material science beyond the catalytic processes mentioned above. This could be accomplished by taking inspiration from organic synthesis where this concept has been successfully developed and implemented.

Abstract
Bacterial infection and oxidative stress hinder clinical wound healing. Therefore, wound dressings with antibacterial and antioxidative properties are urgently needed. In this study, a type of quaternized lignin (QL) functionalized poly(hexamethylene biguanide) hydrochloride (PHMB) complex incorporated polyacrylamide (QL-PHMB-PAM) hydrogel was developed as a multifunctional dressing material for the promotion of infected wound repair. Owing to the abundant catechol groups of quaternized lignin, the QL-PHMB-PAM hydrogel exhibited robust repeatable adhesiveness to various substrates with antioxidative properties. Additionally, the antibacterial components of PHMB in the QL-PHMB-PAM composite hydrogel showed high efficiency and long-term antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus), Escherichia coli (E.coli), and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA; up to 100%). Furthermore, in vivo experiments indicated that this multifunctional hydrogel accelerated the healing of S. aureus-infected wounds by promoting the reconstruction of blood vessels and hair follicles. These results demonstrate that this antioxidative, antibacterial, and bioadhesive hydrogel is a promising alternative wound dressing material for the prevention of bacterial infections and the acceleration of infected wound regeneration.

Abstract
In recent years, conductive hydrogels have received increasing attention as wearable electronics due to the electrochemical properties of conductive polymers combined with the softness of hydrogels. However, conventional hydrogels are complicated to prepare, require high temperature or UV radiation to trigger monomer polymerization, and are frozen at low temperatures, which seriously hinder the application of flexible wearable devices. In this paper, a conductive sensor integrating mechanical properties, adhesion, UV shielding, anti-dehydration, and anti-freeze was prepared based on Ca2+-initiated radical polymerization at room temperature using the synergy of sodium lignosulfonate, acrylamide (AM), and calcium chloride (CaCl2). Metal ions can activate ammonium persulfate to generate free radicals that allow rapid gelation of AM monomers at room temperature without external stimuli. Due to ionic cross-linking and non-covalent interaction, the hydrogels have good tensile properties (1153% elongation and 168 kPa tensile strength), high toughness (758 KJ·m-3), excellent adhesive properties (48.5 kPa), high ionic conductivity (7.2 mS·cm-1), and UV resistance (94.4%). CaCl2 can inhibit ice nucleation, so that the hydrogels have anti-dehydration and frost resistance properties and even at -80 °C can maintain flexibility, high conductivity, and adhesion. Assembled into a flexible sensor, it can sense various large and small movements such as compression, bending, and talking, which is a flexible sensing material with wide application prospects.

Abstract
We proposed a hydrogel grating sensor functionalized with phenylboronic acid (PBA) group for glucose concentration detection. A PBA functionalized polyacrylamide hydrogel film was first prepared via ultraviolet polymerization. Then, the diffraction grating was written on the hydrogel film via the femto-second (fs) laser point-by-point direct inscription. Binding between the PBA groups in the hydrogel and glucose molecules would lead to the swelling of hydrogel and the thus grating structure, thus modifying the diffraction properties of the grating. We experimentally characterized the swelling and transmission of the grating with different glucose concentrations. Sensitivity of the sensor was defined as variations in relative diffraction efficiency in response to glucose concentration changes, and was experimentally found to 0.61%/mM. The proposed sensor showed fast response towards the presence of glucose, and its reusability and biocompatibility were also confirmed. The use of fs-laser inscription technique does not require a pre-fabricated template, and would allow to directly modify the fabrication parameters such as scanning speed, pulse energy and frequency. Therefore, one is able to conveniently optimize the grating structure and improve the inscription efficiency. The proposed hydrogel grating could be potentially fabricated into wearable sensors, namely, contact lenses, for continuous monitoring of tear glucose level with rapid response.

Abstract
Conductive hydrogels have attracted extensive interest owing to its potential in soft robotics, electronic skin, and human monitoring. However, insufficient mechanical properties, lower adhesivity, and unsatisfactory conductivity seriously hinder potential applications in this emerging field. Herein, a highly elastic conductive hydrogel with a combination of favorable mechanical properties, self-adhesiveness, and excellent electrical performance was achieved by the synergistic effect of aminated lignin (AL), polydopamine (PDA), polyacrylamide (PAM) chains, and biomass carbon aerogel (C-SPF). In detail, AL was applied to induce slow oxidative polymerization of DA for preparing the sticky hydrogel containing PDA. Then, C-SPF carbon aerogel was used as a matrix to construct a dual-network structured composite hydrogel by combining with the hydrogels derived from PDA, AL, and PAM. The as-prepared conductive hydrogel displayed excellent mechanical performance, strong adhesive strength, and repeatable adhesivity. The prepared hydrogel-based pressure sensor possessed fast response (0.6 s loading and 0.8 s unloading stress time), high response (maximum RCR = 1.8 × 104), wide working pressure range (from 0 to 240.0 kPa), and excellent durability (stable 500 compression cycles with 30% deformation). In addition, the prepared sensor also displayed ultrahigh sensitivity (170 kPa-1), which was near 4 orders of magnitude higher than the conventional lignin-modified PAM hydrogels. The multiple interactions between hydrogel components and the mechanical properties of hydrogel were also verified by molecular dynamics investigation. Moreover, the excellent cytocompatibility and antibacterial activity of this composite hydrogel ensured high potential in various applications such as human/machine interaction, artificial intelligence, personal healthcare, and wearable devices.

Abstract
Nanocellulose has undergone substantial development as a high value-added cellulose product with broad applications. Dried products are advantageous to decrease transportation costs. However, dried nanocellulose has redispersion challenges when rewetting. In this work, drying techniques, factors affecting redispersibility, and strategies improving the nanocellulose redispersibility are comprehensively reviewed. Hydrogen bonds of nanocellulose are unavoidably developed during drying, leading to inferior redispersibility of dried nanocellulose, even hornification. Drying processes of nanocellulose are discussed first. Then, factors affecting redispersibility are discussed. Following that, strategies improving the nanocellulose redispersibility are analyzed and their advantages and disadvantages are highlighted. Surface charge modification and steric hindrance concept are two main pathways to overcome the redispersion challenge, which are mainly carried out by chemical modification, additive incorporation and non-cellulosic component preservation. Despite several advancements having been achieved, new approaches for enhancing the nanocellulose redispersibility are still required to promote the industrial-scale applications of nanocellulose in various domains.

Abstract
Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT), a very stable and biocompatible conducting polymer, and alginate (Alg), a natural water-soluble polysaccharide mainly found in the cell wall of various species of brown algae, exhibit very different but at the same complementary properties. In the last few years, the remarkable capacity of Alg to form hydrogels and the electro-responsive properties of PEDOT have been combined to form not only layered composites (PEDOT-Alg) but also interpenetrated multi-responsive PEDOT/Alg hydrogels. These materials have been found to display outstanding properties, such as electrical conductivity, piezoelectricity, biocompatibility, self-healing and re-usability properties, pH and thermoelectric responsiveness, among others. Consequently, a wide number of applications are being proposed for PEDOT-Alg composites and, especially, PEDOT/Alg hydrogels, which should be considered as a new kind of hybrid material because of the very different chemical nature of the two polymeric components. This review summarizes the applications of PEDOT-Alg and PEDOT/Alg in tissue interfaces and regeneration, drug delivery, sensors, microfluidics, energy storage and evaporators for desalination. Special attention has been given to the discussion of multi-tasking applications, while the new challenges to be tackled based on aspects not yet considered in either of the two polymers have also been highlighted.

Abstract
It is still a challenge to find an effective solvent system that can simultaneously dissolve the cellulose and lignin in biomass residues to fabricate lignocellulose hydrogels (LHs). Herein, corncob residues from furfural production were pretreated with alkaline peroxide to regulate the lignin content. The lignin/cellulose composites with various lignin content were then dissolved and regenerated by a green and facile ZnCl2/CaCl2 solvent system. The inorganic salt solvents were served as linkers and flexible LHs were obtained. Substrate material containing 10.75% lignin shows the best compressive stress (76.71 kPa). Inspired by its superior ionic conductivity, the hydrogels were assembled into a solid-state electrolyte for a zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor. This research develops a feasible, simple, and low-cost route for lignin-containing hydrogel preparation and offers insights into the high-value application of agro-industrial lignocellulosic wastes.

Abstract
Lignin, a by-product of pulping and biorefinery, has great potential to replace petrochemical resources for wastewater purification. However, the defects of lignin, such as severe heterogeneity, inferior reactivity and poor solubility, characterize the production process of lignin-based products by high energy consumption and serious pollution. In this study, several lignin fractions with relatively homogeneous structure were first obtained by organic solvent fractionation, and their structures were fully deciphered by various characterization techniques. Subsequently, each lignin component was custom-valued for wastewater purification based on their structural characteristics. Benefiting from the high reactivity and reaction accessibility, the lignin fraction (lignin-1) refined by dissolving in ethanol and n-butanol could been used as a raw material to produce cationic lignin-based flocculant (LBF) in a copolymerization system using green, cheap and recyclable ethanol as solvent. The lignin fraction (lignin-2) extracted by methanol and dioxane showed low reactivity and high carbon content, which was used to produce lignin-based activated carbon (LAC) with phosphoric acid as activator. Moreover, the influences of synthetic factors on the purification capacity were discussed, and the LBF and LAC produced under the optimal conditions showed distinguished purification effect on kaolin suspension and heavy metal wastewater, respectively. Furthermore, the corresponding purification mechanism and external factors were also elaborated. It is believed that this cleaner production strategy is helpful for the valorization of lignin in wastewater resources.

Abstract
Flexible hydrogels with integration of excellent mechanical and electrical properties are well suited for applications as wearable electronic sensors, and others. Self-adhesion is an important feature of wearable sensors. However, the usual isotropic- adhesion hydrogels have the drawback of poor anti-interference, which negatively affects their applications. In this study, we developed asymmetric-adhesion and tough lignin reinforced hydrogels in a facile two-step process: 1) PAA hydrogels, with lignin as the binder and conductive filler, were first prepared; 2) the asymmetric-adhesion property was imparted to lignin reinforced hydrogel by simple soaking of the top portion of the hydrogel in CaCl2 solution. The as-obtained asymmetric-adhesion lignin reinforced hydrogel was assembled into a wearable sensor, which shows excellent anti-interference and accurate and stable collections of sensing signals, with its gauge factor (GF) of 2.51 (in the strain range of 0-51.5%). In addition, the tough hydrogel is capable of generating electricity upon moist air sweeping through it, showing excellent energy conversion capabilities, with open-circuit voltage of as high as 306.6 mV. These results provided new prospects for the application of polyelectrolyte hydrogel materials in the fields of wet-to-electric conversion and wearable electronic sensors.

Abstract
Herein, we design a dynamic redox system of using high contents of lignosulfonate (LS) and Al3+ to prepare poly acrylic acid (PAA) (LS-g-PAA-Al) hydrogels. The presence of high LS and Al3+ contents, in combination with the effective Al3+ complexes formed, renders the resultant hydrogel with some unique attributes, including excellent ionic conductivity (as high as 7.38 S·m-1) and antibacterial activity; furthermore, a very fast gelation (in 1 min) was obtained. As a flexible strain sensor, the LS-g-PAA-Al hydrogel with high conductivity demonstrates superior sensitivity in human movement detection. In addition, the rich anionic hydrophilic groups, such as sulfonic groups, phenolic hydroxyl groups, in the hydrogels impart the resultant hydrogels with excellent adsorption capacity for cationic dyes: when using Rhodamine B (RB) as a model cationic dye, the adsorption capacity of the resultant hydrogel reaches 334.64 mg·g-1; as a moist-induced power generator, it generates maximum 150.5 mV open circuit voltage with moist air flow. When the hydrogel electrolyte is assembled into a supercapacitor assembly, it shows high specific capacitance of 245.4 F·g-1, with the maximum energy density of 21.8 Wh·kg-1, power density of 2.37 kW·kg-1, and capacitance retention of 95.1% after 5000 consecutive charge-discharge cycles.

Abstract
Hydrogels have found applications in many different fields. However, poor mechanical properties, such as low elasticity and lack of rapid recovery under large deformation, can severely limit their applications. In this study, we developed lignin reinforced hydrogels made of calcium ion containing ternary polymers (lignosulfonate (LS), alginate (Alg), and polyacrylic acid (PAA)). The resultant hydrogel has excellent elasticity, rapid self-recovery, and multi-functionalities. The covalent PAA network acts as the elastic scaffold of hydrogel, while calcium bridging networks of LS, Alg, and PAA, as well as the strong hydrogen bonding network in the system, function as sacrifice bonds to dissipate energy and transfer stress. The PAA/LS/Alg/Ca hydrogels exhibit rapid and durable elastic recovery ability under large deformation with the highest compressive stress of 835 kPa (95% strain), highest tensile fracture stress of 357 kPa, and highest tensile strain of 1144%. In addition, these tough hydrogels show UV resistance, self-healing, antifreeze, and excellent electro-conductivity. When assembled into a strain sensor, stable and reliable electrical responses with 375 ms response time are demonstrated. The PAA/LS/Alg/Ca hydrogel strain sensors can monitor human movements with responsive and accurate physiological signals. These results support the conclusion that the PAA/LS/Alg/Ca hydrogel strain sensors have great application potential in flexible wearable electronics and smart devices.

Abstract
Gel-based strain sensors with multi-functional outstanding properties have gained considerable attention. However, conventional gel sensors suffer from unsatisfactory mechanical properties and adhesion, and also a lack of self-healing and antibacterial ability. Herein, a multi-functional ionogel has been constructed based on Ag-Lignin nanoparticles (Ag-Lignin NPs), polyurethane (PU), and ionic liquids. The obtained ionogel exhibited excellent mechanical properties (tensile strength: 3.14 MPa, elongation at break: 1241%), and was conferred self-healing ability by introducing the disulfide bonds into the main chain (the best self-healing efficiency is 97.6%). The dynamic catechol redox system based on Ag-Lignin NPs endows the ionogel with repeatable and long-lasting adhesiveness. Besides, the obtained ionogel also presented favorable antibacterial and UV absorption properties. The sensor based on the ionogel possesses good and stable sensing performance. This study proposes a bright new strategy to fabricate multi-functional ionogel-based sensors exerting broad application prospects in the field of human movement and personalized physiological health monitoring.

Abstract
Herein, we innovatively synthesized an ionic conductive PVA/LNP hydrogel with integrated excellent mechanical, anti-freezing, moisturizing, transparent and UV-shielding performances via incorporating nanolignin (also called lignin nanoparticle, LNP) and aluminum chloride (AlCl3) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) matrix containing ethylene glycol/water (EG/H2O) binary solvent. The rigid porous network structure was well constructed by the hydrogen bond interactions among the evenly distributed LNP and PVA chains, thus providing abundant ion transport channels, which attributed to the outstanding ionic conductivity (up to 1.35 × 10-2 S/m, at -24 °C) with improved mechanical strength and flexibility. The tensile strength and elongation at break of PVA/LNP hydrogel were greatly increased from 574.6 kPa and 363.7% to 1241.4 kPa and 589% at the addition of 0.35% LNP, respectively. In addition, the UV-resistance ability was 95% at 365 nm, while the transparency was 74% at 550 nm. The binary solvent of EG and H2O ensured long-term moisturizing capability (10 days) of the hydrogel at 35 °C and 60 RH%, as well as possessing superior anti-freezing performance over the temperature range of -62.6 to 24 °C. As a result, the fabricated PVA/LNP hydrogel was successfully used as strain sensor for detecting diverse human motions and electrophysiological signals.

Abstract
A high-performance nitrogen-doped lignin-based carbon material (ILAC-N) was synthesized using industrial lignin and urea by hydrothermal and activation, as an absorbent of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC). The results showed that the ILAC-N comprises a double-channeled structure with micro and mesopores. It exhibits an excellent adsorption capacity of TC across a wide pH range (pH 2-11), with the highest adsorption capacity of 1396 mg g-1 at 323 K. Tests in actual wastewater showed that the TC removal rate by ILAC-N exceeded 97.4%. Moreover, it maintained a removal rate of 84% after 10 regeneration cycles, revealing its high reusability. Mechanisms suggested that pore filling and π-π interaction played a critical role in this process. In conclusion, ILAC-N can be broadly applied to livestock manure and pharmaceutical wastewater treatment, owing to its high adsorption capacity, good adsorption properties across a wide pH range, excellent reusability. Furthermore, this research opens a new path for lignin utilization.

Abstract
Preparation of natural polymer-based highly conductive hydrogels with tunable mechanical properties for applications in flexible electronics is still challenging. Herein, we report a facile method to prepare lignin-based Fe3+-rich, high-conductivity hydrogels via the following two-step process: (1) lignin hydrogels are prepared by cross-linking sulfonated lignin with poly(ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE) and (2) Fe3+ ions are impregnated into the lignin hydrogel by simply soaking in FeCl3. Benefiting from Fe3+ ion complexation with catechol groups and other functional groups in lignin, the resultant hydrogels exhibit unique properties, such as high conductivity (as high as 6.69 S·m-1) and excellent mechanical and hydrophobic properties. As a strain sensor, the as-prepared lignin hydrogel shows high sensitivity when detecting various human motions. With the flow of moist air, the Fe3+-rich lignin hydrogel generates an output voltage of 162.8 mV. The assembled supercapacitor of the hydrogel electrolyte demonstrates a high specific capacitance of 301.8 F·g-1, with a maximum energy density of 26.73 Wh·kg-1, a power density of 2.38 kW·kg-1, and a capacitance retention of 94.1% after 10 000 consecutive charge-discharge cycles. These results support the conclusion that lignin-based Fe3+-rich, high-conductivity hydrogels have promising applications in different fields, including sensors and supercapacitors, rendering a new platform for the value-added utilization of lignin.

Abstract
Conductive hydrogels as wearable devices meet the basic demands of mechanical flexibility and smart sensing. However, achieving anti-freeze property in conductive hydrogels is still challengeable. Here, a novel anti-freezing system based on ice structuring proteins and CaCl2 was introduced to enable a conductive hydrogel with low-temperature adaptability. Both formation of ice nuclei and ice growth of the hydrogel at sub-zero temperature could be inhibited. Supported by the anti-freeze system, the hydrogel revealed good flexibility (890% at -20 °C), recovery and conductivity (0.50 S/m at -20 °C) at both room temperature and sub-zero temperature. The low-temperature adaptability enabled the hydrogel to be used as strain and temperature sensors at both room temperature and sub-zero temperature. The anti-freeze system in this work is expected to open up a new avenue to promote the conductive hydrogel with low-temperature adaptability.

Abstract
Lignin, an abundant natural polymer but presently under-utilized, has received much attention for its green/sustainable advantages. Herein, we report a facile method to fabricate lignosulfonate (LS) ionic hydrogels by simple crosslinking with poly (ethylene glycol) diglycidyl ether (PEGDGE). The as-obtained LS-PEGDGE hydrogels were comprehensively characterized by mechanical measurements, FT-IR, and SEM. The rich sulfonic and phenolic hydroxyl groups in LS hydrogels play key roles in imparting multifunctional smart properties, such as adhesiveness, conducting, sensing and dye adsorption, as well as superconductive behavior when increasing the moisture content. The hydrogels have a high adsorption capacity for cationic dyes, using methylene blue as a model, reaching 211 mg·g-1. As a moist-induced power generator, the maximum output voltage is 181 mV. The LS-PEGDGE hydrogel-based flexible strain sensors exhibit high sensitivity when detecting human movements. As the hydrogel electrolyte, the assembled supercapacitor shows high specific capacitance of 236.9 F·g-1, with the maximum energy density of 20.61 Wh·kg-1, power density of 2306.4 W·kg-1, and capacitance retention of 92.9% after 10,000 consecutive charge-discharge cycles. Therefore, this multifunctional LS hydrogels may have promising applications in various fields, providing a new platform for the value-added utilization of lignin from industrial waste.

Abstract
The development of conductive, soft, ultra-stretchable, and asymmetrically adhesive hydrogels is difficult and essential for both wearable electronics and anti-adhesion tissue dressings. In particular, there is still no simple, effective and universal approach to construct an asymmetrically adhesive multifunctional hydrogel. Here, we first synthesized lignosulfonate sodium (LS)-doped PAA hydrogels with uniform adhesion (adhesive strength: ~30.5 kPa), conductivity (~0.45 S/m), stretchability (up to ~2250%), and low compressive modulus (~20 kPa). In the second step, an oriented soaking of Fe3+ onto the upper surface of the resultant composite hydrogel renders the upper surface non-adhesive. This novel strategy masterfully delivers asymmetric adhesion behavior to the upper and bottom surfaces of the same hydrogel (~0 kPa adhesive strength for the upper surface; strong adhesive strength of ~27 kPa for the bottom surface). The asymmetric adhesive hydrogel has proven to adhere well onto the human skin and achieve waste-barrier. Importantly, this hydrogel assembled pressure sensor demonstrates excellent anti-interference and wearable comfort.

Abstract
Development of lignin-derived carbon adsorbents with ultrahigh phosphate adsorption activity and rapid adsorption kinetics is of great importance, yet limited success has been achieved. Herein, we develop a CeO2 functionalized N-doped lignin-derived biochar (Ce@NLC) via a cooperative modification strategy for effective and fast phosphate capture. The novel modification strategy not only contributes greatly to the loading of well-dispersed CeO2 nanoparticles with a smaller size, but also significantly increases the relative concentration of Ce(III) species on Ce@NLC. Consequently, an enhanced capture capacity for phosphate (196.85 mg g-1) as well as extremely rapid adsorption kinetics were achieved in a wide operating pH range (2-10). Interestingly, Ce@NLC exhibited a strong phosphate adsorption activity at even low-concentration phosphorus-containing water. The removal efficiency and final P concentration reached 99.87% and 2.59 μg P L-1 within 1 min at the phosphate concentration of 2 mg P L-1. Experiments and characterization indicated that Ce(III) species plays a predominant role for the phosphate capture, and ligand exchange, together with electrostatic attraction, are the main adsorption mechanism. This work develops not only an efficient carbon-based adsorbent for phosphate capture, but also promotes the high-value application of industrial lignin.
